Phipps CDC hits the fall season with new energy following a very successful summer, and steady progress in several program areas. We continue to be challenged by the current economy but strong support from our donors and the dedication of our talented staff help us to maintain high-quality programming and provide important opportunities to our participants.

Please remember that you may make a convenient online donation at any time to support any one of our many program areas. Our sincere thanks for your interest in Phipps CDC. Please read on for the latest news...

This summer was an active one for Phipps youth. Phipps operated seven summer camps providing recreation and enrichment for more than 650 children, including a unique creative arts program delivered by older teens interning with Studio in a School.

The Phipps Summer Youth Employment Program successfully placed 350 youth aged 14-24 in summer jobs for six weeks, and our Beacon Teen Programs participated in a series of local community service projects through the NYC Dept of Youth & Community Development.

Programs such as these provide recreation, learning and exposure to new experiences that youth take away with them each summer. Phipps CDC's long-term goal for youth begins with education to inspire a path of learning and achievement at an early age, and continues through the potentially difficult teen years. Summer programs are an important part of this approach and help our kids stay interested and focused outside of the school year. Read about Phipps youth programs.

Tutoring
Phipps CDC recently kicked off the second year of its innovative volunteer tutoring program which matches students, professionals, and residents in the New York metro area with participants of Phipps teen programs and adult ESL and pre-GED classes. Tutoring sessions take place weekly at various Phipps program sites.

Find out about becoming a tutor and submit an application, or contact a program recruiter at volunteers@phippsny.org.

If you are enrolled in a Phipps CDC teen program or ESL/Pre-GED class and would like to sign up for tutoring, please call (718) 620-1900 ext. 40 or 41.

Literacy Connection began its third year with a new internship component to help participants develop real job skills, and better prepare for work once they do acquire their GED.

Literacy Connection is designed for teens and young adults aged 16-24 who read at a 4th - 8th grade level and are neither in school nor employed. An intensive program of classroom instruction helps participants qualify for a GED program, while work-readiness training and 6 hours a week at an internship site build skills and confidence.

For enrollment information or to find out about hosting an internship, please call (718) 401-7453. Download a flyer.

Now in its third year of operation, the Phipps Financial Empowerment Center has assisted 1,376 clients specifically with debt reduction. Based on available data, a group of 84 of those individuals achieved total savings of $734,546 since July 2008!

Based at the Phipps Opportunity Center in Melrose, the Financial Empowerment Center provides free one-on-one financial counseling to help Bronx residents manage their personal finances, resolve credit and debt issues, and access affordable financial services and products. Phipps financial counselors served 1,161 unique clients from July 2009 through June 2010. More than one third of those clients are participating ongoing financial counseling, a key goal of the Center.

The Financial Empowerment Center also provides services at the Phipps West Farms Technology & Career Center, as well as several community partner locations. For more information, call (347) 329-3929, or find a convenient neighborhood location.

The recently launched Phipps Early Head Start provides early childhood education program supports for expectant moms and dads, and families with very young children. In-home services help parents strengthen their roles in the healthy development of their child, prepare for a new baby, and encourage learning for newborns and children up to age 3.

The program will soon occupy space within the Phipps Youth & Family Program site at Crotona Park West, to serve as a temporary meeting location for parents, a group socialization/activity center for children, and a home for program staff. The Early Head Start program will move to its permanent home at the newly built Roscoe C. Brown, Jr. Apartments later this year.

Early Head Start is available to qualifying families in the Crotona Park neighborhood of the Bronx. For more information, please call (718) 716-1196 or download a flyer.

2010 Gala
Phipps CDC is fortunate to be affiliated with Phipps Houses, New York City's oldest and largest provider of affordable housing. Each year, Phipps Houses honors leadership and commitment in community development with an annual awards dinner to benefit Phipps CDC education programs and social services. The 2010 awards event took place on September 27th and was our most successful to date: a record $1,160,850 was raised to support the community programs operated by Phipps CDC.
