Camp group 2009

Summer 2010 is upon us and Phipps staff and participants are getting ready for summer camp and other Phipps CDC education and recreation programs for youth and adults.

We're all looking forward to a great summer season but we are also facing difficulties due to serious city and state funding issues. We genuinely appreciate the support of our donors and community partners who help to ensure the continuation of Phipps programs and services. Please remember that you may make a convenient online donation at any time to support summer camp, or any one of our many program areas.

Our sincere thanks for your interest in Phipps CDC. Please read on for the latest news...

Girl with blocks
Phipps CDC has launched a home-based Early Head Start program to support expectant moms and dads, and families with very young children. In-home services help parents strengthen their roles in the healthy development of their child, and encourage learning for newborns and children up to age 3.

Phipps Early Head Start services are designed to meet the individual needs of each family and provide age-specific activities for the child. Weekly home visits help families with young children establish daily routines and promote strong parent-child interaction. Weekly visits for expectant parents focus on prenatal care, the mother's health, and preparing the home for a newborn.

Home visits are conducted by a Family Child Specialist who provides ongoing assessment of special needs or service referrals, and participants have opportunities to meet other families enrolled in the program.

Early Head Start is available to qualifying families in the Crotona Park neighborhood of the Bronx. Download a flyer for more information.

NYC Justice Corps recently opened an Alumni Center to continue support for program graduates in the Bronx. The Center offers one-on-one job readiness coaching, informational workshops, guidance for educational planning, and referrals to employment opportunities or social services. Staff also organizes social activities to keep graduates connected with the program, and with each other. Recent alumni outings included bowling and a movie night.

To date, a total of 98 Bronx members have graduated from the 6-month employment and community service program, and some have already taken advantage of the new alumni services. The Alumni Center is funded by Robin Hood Foundation.

Ms. Phipps 2010
On April 30th, Phipps CDC seniors celebrated "the art of aging gracefully" with the second annual Ms. Phipps Senior Pageant. Six ladies from Phipps' residential programs for seniors showcased their talents and endured a tough Q&A session. At the end of the evening, 97-year-old Cecilia Cerda, an active member of the NORC at Henry Phipps Plaza/Kips Bay Court, was crowned the winner. More than 200 guests attended, including representatives of Congressman Jose Serrano and Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr. The event was sponsored in part by the United States Census 2010.

NYU Literacy Review 2010
Phipps CDC literacy education features a wide range of writing exercises to give students opportunities to practice their skills and express themselves creatively. Earlier this year, instructors from our Pre-GED and ESL programs submitted student work to the NYU Literacy Review Program, and three were selected for publication in the Literacy Review Volume 8!

Our students were 3 of the 550 submissions from 59 literacy teachers and site advisors around the city. The editorial board of NYU students and editors chose a total of 74 essays, poems and letters to be published. The Phipps submissions included an essay by former Pre-GED student Joy Edoris, "My Mom Is My Hero" and pieces from two students of our ESL program: "A Tiny Room in the Big USA" by Otilia Solis and "Las Panchitas!" by Felix Cintron. The students and Phipps staff attended a celebratory dinner at NYU in May.

Medical fellows
This summer, a Health Literacy Fellowship will place a medical student with one of our Adult Basic Education classes to help students improve their functional literacy skills while learning more about health.

The fellowship is provided through the Mayor's Office for Adult Education and benefits medical students by improving their own communication and teaching skills, while helping people with limited literacy to overcome common health obstacles, such as communicating comfortably with medical staff and accessing appropriate care. Topics covered include disease prevention and early detection, nutrition, and physical activity.

This will be Phipps CDC's third year participating in the medical fellowship, which has been a very effective component of our adult education program. To find out about Adult Basic Education classes this summer, contact the Phipps Opportunity Center.

Teen dance team
A BIG congratulations to Generation X, the teen dance team from the Phipps Beacon teen program in West Farms. On June 7th, the 15 members performed in the Nike Step It Up dance competition finals in front of 1800 guests and WON FIRST PRIZE!

The city-wide competition was organized through a partnership with YouthNoise, Nike, and the NYC Dept. of Youth & Community Development. Each group was required to choreograph and perform an original dance piece, as well as develop a community service project. Generation X teamed up on a series of workshops for local middle and high school students to discuss issues around gender discrimination. Their winning performance also brought the Beacon program a $3500 cash prize and $1000 worth of Nike sports equipment for all to use!
