Welcome to the first Phipps CDC news update of 2010. We look forward to a busy year with new opportunities to serve our communities and build on some innovative programs. We're extremely proud of what we're able to accomplish with our talented staff, motivated participants, strong community partners, and your support. Many thanks and please read on for the latest news.

Teens - Holiday09
The Phipps West Farms Teen Program brought holiday cheer to the Bronx community, and beyond. December activities included a volunteer night at a lower Manhattan soup kitchen, which helped to feed more than 100 families; making personalized greeting cards for 45 elderly Meals on Wheels clients; and raising $400 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation through Macy's Santa letter writing campaign. The teens also staffed the annual Fordham Road Business Improvement District holiday party helping Santa give out gifts, running the raffle, and organizing games and activities for attendees. Phipps CDC youth and teen programs keep a strong focus on community action and service. Educational and collaborative experiences serve to remind youth of their membership in a larger community and foster their ability to observe and contribute to it. Learn more about our West Farms Teen program at the Phipps Community Education Center or call (718) 542-0109 ext. 5004.

Free tax preparation services are now available at the Phipps West Farms Technology & Career Center. Families earning less than $50,000/year and individuals who earn less than $18,000/year are eligible for free tax services.

Phipps CDC is the only Bronx Seedco partner to provide free tax assistance this year so make your appointment today! Call (718) 620-1900 ext.10.

Tutoring sessions take place several times a week at the Phipps West Farms Technology & Career Center and twice a week at the Phipps Community Education Center.

The program is ongoing and volunteer slots are still open to students, professionals, and residents in the New York metro area. Find out about becoming a tutor and submit an application, or email a recruiter at volunteers@p hippsny.org

Basketball clinic
The Phipps Cornerstone Community Program is now open at Soundview Houses. Free learning and recreation activities are available for youth and adults during after school, evening and weekend hours.

Programs focused on "renewal, restoration and regrowth" encourage participants to establish a relationship with their immediate neighborhood and the larger world community. Community service painting projects and leadership activities help kids and teens get involved and have fun. Sports and recreation includes basketball clinics for ages 6-17, yoga, arts and cooking, and a pen pal project will connect Soundview youth with young participants at other Phipps program sites. On Saturdays, adults can take advantage of intergenerational art, a fatherhood program, and father and son basketball.

To enroll, contact the Phipps Cornerstone Community Program
at Soundview Houses, 1680 Seward Avenue, (718) 378-6246.

Phipps CDC is working with Seedco to increase health insurance enrollment for children of low-income families in the Bronx community. Phipps staff is currently doing neighborhood outreach to identify target populations, and provide referrals to Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program.

Services began in January and eligible clients can enroll in Medicaid and CHILD Health Plus at Phipps West Farms Technology & Career Center Monday - Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. All clients will be screened for eligibility and must provide documentation to show proof of income, social security, and date of birth.
