The community service component
of NYC Justice Corps engages Corps members in projects to restore and beautify neighborhood spaces such as local parks, community centers, and schools. A partnership with Groundswell Community Mural Projects produced four murals this year, the largest of which was completed on an entire exterior wall of the M.S. 219/Charles Drew Educational Complex in Morrisania. Corps members worked together with Groundswell
artists and staff to develop the concept, and received
technical training to create the spectacular display
highlighting Community, Education and
Fitness,
which
was celebrated at a dedication ceremony in early September. The project is a source of pride and inspiration for the participants and has made a real imprint on the school and the surrounding community, which is one of the reparative goals for Corps members. If you know a young adult aged 18-24 who might
benefit from joining NYC Justice Corps,
call (347) 329-4004 or visit the NYC Justice Corps web site. |

Thanks to the incredible skill and devotion of 96-year-
old Cecilia Cerda, these children in Ghana are
wearing brand new outfits designed and handsewn
by Ms. Cerda, herself. Cecilia Cerda is an active
member of Phipps CDC's Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC)
at the Phipps Plazas in Manhattan. She has
spent the past 20 years designing and sewing
dresses for children in poverty-stricken regions of
Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Haiti, and her native
Dominican Republic.
Saddened by seeing children on TV who have nothing,
Ms. Cerda has dedicated her craft to providing a
necessity with a level of quality and beauty they would
not normally have. Refusing to use a sewing machine,
Ms. Cerda's passion keeps her working by hand right
up until midnight. Her sole income is her social
security check which pays for material, sewing
supplies and shipping; she occasionally receives
donations of fabric and thread.
Ms. Cerda is just one of the many vibrant seniors we
serve. Learn about Phipps CDC's programs
for Seniors. |
