The first cohort of the
NYC Justice Corps
recently celebrated completion of its community
service training, passing the torch to the next group of
members. Corps members hosted a lunch where they
presented their group service projects and outlined
the tasks to be assumed by upcoming project groups.
The first cohort now moves into the next training
phase, featuring individual 6-week internships with a
selection of local employers.
Funded by the NYC Center for Economic Opportunity through CUNY's John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the NYC Justice Corps brings young adults involved in the criminal justice system together with their communities to identify and address unmet community needs. Through meaningful service work, internships, and employment and educational opportunities, the NYC Justice Corps provides members with practical skills, social support, and leadership training to help them stay out of the justice system and become productive members of the community. The first Phipps CDC Justice Corps cohort began in October and completed its work readiness component in December with 31 participants at a 97% retention rate. |

In September 2008, Phipps CDC began an externship
program to provide mental health services to students
and parents at its Head Start, afterschool and teen
programs, and clients of its community education
centers. Six graduate students pursuing doctoral
degrees in psychology serve a caseload of clients,
addressing issues such as anger management,
conflict resolution, and difficulties resulting from
exposure to domestic violence, loss of a family
member, incarceration, drug/alcohol abuse, and
similar challenges. Externs conduct individual and
group therapy, parental guidance, and psychological
testing sixteen hours per week and also receive two
hours of supervision per week from licensed
psychologists.
The success of the program has led to a partnership
with Long Island University, which will place two
first-year doctoral students from its clinical psychology
program for training each year; these students will
then have the opportunity to return to Phipps CDC
when they are in their third year.
The program has served nearly 50 individuals to date, and recently launched the application process for 2009-2010 externships; click for details. |

The new Phipps Beacon at the Piagentini and Jones
Campus in Throgs Neck has gotten off to a strong
start with an academically-focused program serving
80 middle school students. After-school programming
centers on homework help and engaging young
people in fun, fast-paced learning activities. New
recreational activities include boys' and girls' varsity
basketball teams, a boys' junior varsity team, and a
cheerleading squad. "The Thunder" has had a trying
season, but both the boys and girls teams managed
to win their last games.
To help plan future adult programming, the Beacon
staff is currently surveying members of the school
community and the surrounding neighborhood to
solicit ideas for activities and events geared toward
adults. Many residents say they look forward to the
opportunity to enroll in computer and dance classes.
