ABOUT DIABETES
What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease caused by insulin deficiency (type 1) or insulin resistance (type 2). Insulin is a hormone that tells the body cells to absorb sugar from the blood and convert it to energy. High blood sugar levels can cause health complications such as nerve damage, cardiovasular disease, blurred vision, and diabetic foot problems.

Although there is no permanent cure for diabetes, many treatments are available to prevent the disease's symptoms. Many diabetics lead long and healthy lives.

American Diabetes Month
November is National Diabetes Month. In the United States alone over 20 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes. That's about 7% of the country's population. If you are not diabetic, there is still a good chance you have a friend or a family member who is.

In celebration of National Diabetes Month,
HealthyFeetStore.com would like to devote this month's issue of Footnotes to discussing topics of interest to diabetics and their loved ones.
EXERCISE AND DIABETES

Exercise"Thinking about adding exercise to your diabetes treatment plan? Good for you! Diabetes and exercise go hand in hand. Regular physical activity can help you improve your blood sugar control, as well as boost your overall fitness and reduce your risk of heart disease and nerve damage."
- MayoClinic.com

Researchers have tested it, doctors have discussed it, and the verdict is in. While not a substitute for conventional treatments such as medication and insulin injections, a regular exercise routine can have significant advantages for diabetics.

Read the HealthyFeetStore.com article, Diabetes & Exercise - Exercise Tips for Diabetics.  Consult your health care provider before beginning your exercise regimen. Once you've gotten the "go ahead," get out of the house, have fun, and reap the health benefits.
