Vision Health Month

May is Vision Health Month, and the CNIB is urging Canadians to take action to prevent vision loss.

Their goal is to reduce the number of Canadians who needlessly lose their sight each year by 50% by the year 2020.

Take this quiz to see if you are at risk for preventable vision loss.

Shades of Fun Day

This Thursday, May 24 is the CNIB's Shades of Fun Day!  In celebration of Vision Health Month we are holding a bake sale (Cochrane location) and sunglass giveaway (Crowfoot location) with all proceeds going to CNIB.

Also, for this day only save 20% off all non-prescription sunglasses and 15% off all prescription sunglasses

Ultraviolet light (UV) from the sun is one of the main factors in preventable vision loss.  Consider the following facts:

-      A child's eyes are more vulnerable to UV damage than an adult's.

-          Studies show that cumulative UV exposure over time can lead to increased risk for eye disease such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

-          A child may receive up to 80% of his or her LIFETIME UV exposure by the age of 18!

-          Not all sunglasses are created equal.  Poor quality sunglasses may actually do more harm to your eyes than wearing none at all.

-          Significant UV exposure occurs just by being outdoors (without looking directly at the sun)

So put on your best pair of shades and visit us on the 24th in support of CNIB's Vision Health Month.

Our docs accompany Fribbit to local school

fribbit 2012

Congratulations to the Kindergarten students at St. Sylvester Elementary School in Silver Springs, Calgary - because 100% of their class got their eyes checked this year, they AGAIN won a visit from Fribbit the Frog!

Fribbit is Optometry's mascot for preventive eye care for kindergarteners in the province of Alberta, and the kids at St. Sylvester won the chance to meet him last year.  Since they were so great at looking after their eyes this year they got to see Fribbit again last Thursday.  The "Eye See Eye Learn" program ensures that access to eye examinations and eyeglasses are not barriers in preventing kids from learning up to their potential.  You can read more about Eye See Eye Learn here. The kids had a great time hearing from our doctors Heather Cowie and Brent Hopfauf about the importance of getting your eyes checked, and got real excited when Fribbit (played by our own Amber Grove) finally made an appearance!

Springtime allergies?  Treatments are available

In Alberta we wait so long for the signs of Spring, then when it finally happens many of us are hit with symptoms of eye allergies.

It seems that all the plants, grasses and trees start releasing pollens into the air at once.  Exposure to these molecules ("allergens") may create an allergic reaction, causing a range of symptoms, from mild sniffles or itching to full-blown inflammation and even breathing difficulties.
