Eye Health Month Promotes "Computer Vision Syndrome" Awareness

October is designated each year as "Eye Health Month", during which optometrists promote the importance of preventative eye care.  This year, our message is for the several million Canadians who spend time in front of their computer screens.

We tend to think that the Computer Revolution only applies to teens and 20-somethings.  Not any more.  New research suggests that Baby Boomers are now spending at least 7 and a half hours per day in front of eye-straining devices.  This can lead to Computer Vision Syndrome which may involve headaches, blurry vision, fatigue, and trouble concentrating.

Click here to read an article we wrote for a local newspaper about Eye Health Month and how to avoid Computer Vision Syndrome.

Amber's Perfect Eyewear Solution

Amber is our energetic Optometric Assistant who works at both Mountain View locations and is also our Fundraising Chair for World Sight Day.

Her eyeglass prescription is unique in that she has a high degree of astigmatism (curvature difference in the cornea).  This condition causes her glasses to be thicker in some places than others.  In combination with her Presbyopia (near focusing disorder) it is very important that she chooses the right type of frame.

Amber's choice is the Oakley Coto 2.0 in the berry color.  This color works great with her complexion and is neutral enough to be worn with almost any color of clothing.  The frame front is made of ultra light weight titanium and the temples of stress resistant acetate.

Oakley's patented "3 point fit" ensures that Amber's eyewear stays in perfect alignment, extremely important for high astigmatism, as the slightest twist or turn can throw off the accuracy of her correction.

Amber's statement sums it all up: "I love my Oakleys, they are stylish, fun, secure and lightweight.  They are by far the most comfortable pair of glasses I own."

Eye See...Eye Learn Program Funds Glasses for Kindergarten-aged Children

You may have seen some information recently about Eye See...Eye Learn.  This program provides free eyeglasses to your children who need them.  The only condition is that your child must be currently enrolled in ECS (Kindergarten).

The Alberta Association of Optometrists, in partnership with Alberta Health and Wellness has committed to extend funding for this program for a further three years.  Our interest in promoting eye and vision health resulted in a pilot project in 2003 to explore the need for preventive eye care in this age group.  The study showed that as many as 14% of kindergarten-age children may have some form of a vision problem.  These problems are not always easy to spot and may contribute to learning difficulties if left untreated.

You should have received an information package sent home with your child in kindergarten about this program.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact us, or you may visit our professional Association website by clicking here.

Thank you for your continued business.  We look forward to seeing you at your next visit.

Sincerely,
