Ultra-high Oxygen Disposable Contact Lenses
Dr. Michele's perfect eyewear solution
For 27 years Dr. Michele Naruszewicz ("Dr. Michele" to her patients and staff) has worn contact lenses. Her high nearsightedness (myopia) causes distortion while wearing glasses, so when she first got contact lenses she was thrilled with the new world she was seeing. "The distortion in my glasses made everything appear smaller" says Dr. Michele. "This made tasks such as night driving difficult". Upon graduating from optometry school she found that the visual tasks she was faced with while seeing patients, such as using the biomicroscope, were made much easier with the aid of contact lenses.
Many decades of contact lens wear can put the eye at risk for health problems. Always one to be very proactive about her health, Dr. Michele was one of the first to try the new ultra-high oxygen disposables when they first came out. Currently, she wears CIBAVision's AIR OPTIX™ NIGHT & DAY® AQUA. Read on to learn more about how these lenses work so well for Dr. Michele.
Book an appointment with Dr. Michele or one of our other doctors to discuss YOUR specific lifestyle in detail so we can come up with the perfect solution for your eye care needs. |
Dry Eyes? Now there's a Vitamin!
One of the most common symptoms our patients talk to us about is dry eyes. As anyone suffering from this knows, dry eye can cause eye discomfort, grittiness, itchiness and difficulty wearing contact lenses. Our desert-like conditions in southern Alberta contributes to this in a big way.
Some of the latest research on dry eye syndrome has shown that intake of Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids can help those suffering from certain kinds of dry eye. Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) cannot be produced by your body, and must be ingested from external sources. They are "essential" meaning they are required for overall good health and have direct beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. We can get EFA's from cold water fish and flaxseed oil, however most of us do not get nearly enough.
TheraTears Nutrition for Dry Eyes with Omega-3's is now available at Mountain View Optometry. It contains the exact quantities of short chain omega-3's in the form of organically grown flaxseed oil, and long-chain omega 3's from cold-water mercury-free fish oil for effective dry eye relief. Click here for more detailed information about this new product.
While there are several different causes for dry eye syndrome, our optometrists can examine you and help determine which therapy will be most beneficial. Book an appointment so we can discover if omega-3 supplements will be likely to reduce your discomfort associated with dry eyes. |

See Your Eye Doctor before School Starts
How important is it that your kids receive an eye exam prior to the start of the school year? Consider these facts:
- Vision problems affect one in twenty pre-schoolers and one in four school-age children. If left untreated the problems can worsen and lead to other serious problems as well as affect learning ability, personality and adjustment in school
- As many as 60 percent of children who are identified as 'problem learners' have undetected vision problems
- It is estimated that 80 percent of learning comes from vision, yet only 14 percent of school-aged children start the school year with an eye exam
Consider also that outward appearances are often deceiving when determining if an eye or vision problem exists. Our doctors often hear the statement that "my son/daughter sees fine, they can see for miles!". This actually tells us very little about the visual performance of the child, and parents are often surprised when we find evidence of a lazy eye, focusing problem or eye health problem.
A critical test that is performed during all comprehensive eye exams is an evaluation of the health of the retina. Although many parents believe that their children are not at risk for eye health conditions, many young children do develop problems that can affect their ability to learn or concentrate, or may even be sight threatening if left undetected.
At Mountain View Optometry we have the most advanced method of evaluating the health of the retina - the optomap® Retinal Exam. This instrument quickly and easily takes a widefield scan of the retina which our doctors then evaluate on the computer screen in the exam room. This is done without the need for pupil dilating drops in most cases, and is ideally suited for children.
For a limited time, get your kid's eyes checked with an optomap® Retinal Exam, and enter to WIN one of several "Family Time Out" Gift Packages (see above for details). While you're at it, book yourself in as well!

Getting Cataract Surgery? Know Your Options
Cataract removal is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures. A cataract occurs when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, impairing vision. This can occur at any age and there are several types of cataracts, but the most common type is a nuclear cataract which generally occurs with advancing age.
A cataract is removed by an ophthalmologist during a 15 minute procedure through a very small incision that requires no stitches. An implant is then inserted where the old lens was to take its place and provide clear vision. Those who had a high eyeglass prescription before cataract surgery will be pleased that they will no longer require thick glasses after the procedure, as the surgeon simply adds the power of the glasses to the lens implant. What many do not realize, however, is that they have a choice when it comes to the type of vision they will have after the cataracts are taken out.
Our optometrists at Mountain View take the time to thoroughly assess your needs prior to referring you for any surgical procedure. Depending on your work, lifestyle and hobbies we may direct the surgeon to provide you with a certain visual outcome.
For example, someone who is an avid golfer will likely opt for clear vision at a distance without the need for corrective lenses. Someone else who owns an internet business and spends many hours on the computer will prefer clear uncorrected vision at their computer distance. Yet others who have a variety of vision needs may opt for the new multifocal lens implants.
Knowing your options is key before proceeding with cataract surgery. Speak with one of our optometrists at your next visit to make sure you are properly informed.
