Dr. Wilk
Oakley Eyewear

Performance eyewear for an active lifestyle

Of the many pairs of glasses Dr. Wilk owns, among his favorites are the Oakleys pictured above.  Unique technology (in both the frames AND lenses) and design result in a perfect combination of features for someone very physically active who values visual precision as well as style.

The X METAL® Frame is made out of Titanium, so despite the bulky design (as is the style nowadays) the frame is ultra-lightweight.  It stays on Dr. Wilk's face while he is mountain biking, running or hiking.  Special design and technology on the lenses also contribute to the performance of his Oakleys.

Online Contact Lenses
by Dr. Christie Kim

Contact lenses are medical devices that go on top of your cornea, which is the front surface of your eye, and corrects your refractive error ie. Myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.

Contact lenses are now readily available to meet many patients' needs and one's lifestyle.  Mainly they get divided into two types: soft and hard.  Soft contact lenses are more popular and they come in a variety of replacement schedules.  Many patients can benefit from the convenience of wearing contact lenses.

There are many different outlets to obtain contact lenses in Canada; through your optometrist, optical retailer and the Internet.  Online sales of contact lenses are on the rise.  In light of the recent economic woes, this option might sound more appealing.  However, consumers need to beware there are a few risks to consider before purchasing online.

A contact lens prescription is NOT the same as a glasses prescription. It should include the brand name of the contact lenses you were fit with, base curvature, diameter, power/strength of the lenses, recommended contact lens solution name and expiration date.  Because contact lenses come in a variety of fits, one should go through a proper contact lens fitting with an eye care professional to assess how well a particular base curve fits to your eye curvature and that your vision is appropriately corrected to reduce eye strain.

Logic Coloured Contacts

Cosmetic Contact Lenses

Contact lenses that are coloured can temporarily alter the natural colour of your eyes while you are wearing them.  The question we often get asked is "Are they safe?".  Coloured contacts pose the same health risks to your eyes as regular contacts, and therefore should only be used under the supervision of a qualified Doctor of Optometry.  While our doctors don't advocate wearing contacts ONLY for the purpose of changing your eye colour, those who need an optical correction may be good candidates for coloured lenses.

Mountain View Optometry is one of the first in Alberta to offer new Logic 1-Day disposable colour contact lenses.  The safety of these lenses when properly fit is excellent, as they are thrown away after one use which greatly reduces eye health risks.  Scroll down for information about a special offer to try these lenses for FREE, then book an appointment so we can determine if this new product may be right for you.
Mountain View Participates in MS Walk 2009

MS Walk 2009

On June 7, ten of Mountain View Optometry's doctors and staff participated in this year's Enerflex MS Walk to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis (MS).  2000 Calgarians participated this year and walked 4, 8 or 12km starting at Prince's Island Park.

MS is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune response attacks a person's central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), leading to progressive physical and cognitive disability.  As vision problems are often one of the first symptoms reported by victims of MS, optometrists are often the first health care providers able to identify the disease.

Funds raised through events like the Enerflex MS WALK help provide support to people living with MS and also help drive research initiatives into the cause and cure of multiple sclerosis.  Alberta is one of the "hotbeds" of MS with one of the highest rates in the world.  There is no cure, however new treatments are being developed which should help reduce the progression and symptoms of the disease.
