                                        To the  family,
Two new things to tell you about this month, first as you may have noticed we have changed the design of our e-newsletter to a more readable and navigable format.  Secondly, we have added a new column that we know you'll find interesting.  Each month we will feature one of our professional staff members wearing their favorite pair of glasses.  There's an art and a science to prescribing eyewear that meets YOUR needs in all aspects, including visual, lifestyle, and design.  You'll see how we can use this expertise to help you find that perfect pair of glasses every time.

Have a great spring and we'll keep our hopes up for some actual heat and sunshine this summer!

Tracie
Prodesign Eyewear

"Clean Danish Design"

Tracie, our optical assistant is wearing one of our latest frame styles from Prodesign.  This eyewear is made in Denmark and balances classic and clean lines with bold and bright colors.  When Tracie is selecting new eyewear she looks for frames that are unique in style but also very comfortable, as she needs to wear them all day long due to her nearsightedness.  They should also ideally feature a twist of something surprising and unexpected, and most would agree this fits her personality perfectly!

Read on to learn more about why Prodesign works for Tracie, and why it just might be an excellent choice for your next pair of glasses.  Forward this email to someone YOU may know with a Prodesign personality!
Acuvue Fitting Night
ACUVUEŽ Fitting Night a Success

Thanks to all who came out to our free ACUVUEŽ Fitting event.  You were one of the first in Alberta to try this new technology.  Follow ups are still in progress, however the results are very promising with the majority of our patients preferring these contact lenses to their current ones.  If you missed this event, don't worry.  Our optometrists, having worked with so many "trial fits" in such a short period, are now experts in these lenses and have an even better chance of helping you.  Book an appointment to discuss how these new contacts may change your life!
sunglassesCan You "Feel" Sun Damage in Your Eyes?

A common question we get asked is "why am I so light sensitive?"  Actually, light sensitivity is a good thing, as it protects your eyes from the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR).  Interestingly, UVR is invisible!  This is why everyone, regardless of their degree of light sensitivity, needs to wear sunglasses outdoors at all times.  Damage from UVR is cumulative, meaning that the number of times your eyes are exposed to UVR directly increases your risk level for conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and cancer.  Children under 18, therefore, are the most at risk if they do not wear sunglasses.

Vitamin C Important for Good Vision

Slows Macular Degeneration and can Prevent Cataracts

We all know that Vitamin C is important for general good health.  And new research shows that regular Vitamin C intake has direct benefits for our eyes as well.

Humans are one of the few species that can not make their own Vitamin C.  We have to get it from foods such as fruits (citrus, tropical, berries) and vegetables (green leafy vegetables and potatoes).  Multiple studies done recently show that age-related cataracts can be prevented by the intake of Vitamin C.  And a large scale study done on macular degeneration showed that Vitamin C was one of the major vitamin supplements that slowed down the rate of vision loss.

How much should you take?  Make sure you have several servings of the above mentioned fruits and vegetables daily, and your optometrist may recommend additional supplementation if you show risk factors for cataracts or macular degeneration.
