Balance, Reflexes and Aging

As you age, your nerves, muscles and reflexes deteriorate without proper stimulation. This can lead to joint instability and a loss of balance that increases the possibility of falling or some other related injury. The effects of declining balance and reflexes can be limited with the proper exercises. Please see an exercise specialist for quick, easy exercises you can do to improve your balance!

Other benefits of improved balance:

  • Aid in mobility, function and a continued independent lifestyle
  • Leads to an improvement in coordination and posture
  •  Improves joint stability by correctly using muscles in an efficient manner
  • Easy to do - can be done anytime/anywhere

Cholesterol Awareness

Have you had your cholesterol level checked recently? More important - do you know what your numbers mean; you should! High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease and should be kept under control. Too much cholesterol leads to a build up of fatty tissues in the walls of the arteries that narrows and slows down or completely blocks blood flow to the heart. Worse yet, cholesterol does not typically present any symptoms, making regular checkups a imperative preventative measure.

What is a MET and how does it affect my workout?

A MET is a measure of energy expended during 1 minute while at rest. MET levels quantify your exercise intensity compared to your resting state of 1 MET. For example, folding laundry is equal to 2 METS while swimming laps in a pool is approximately 7 METS. Remember, METS are relative to energy expended at rest; an activity of 5 METS is 5 times as intense as your resting state. Utilizing METS is a quick, simple way to maintain proper intensity and categorized accordingly: light <3 METS, moderate 3-6 METS, and vigorous >6 METS.
