The recent spring rains have brought on an influx of mosquitos and other pesky insects.  Be sure your family stays comfortable and safe this summer by following these helpful insect repellent tips:

Insect repellents containing DEET should not be used in children under 2 months of age. Oil of eucalyptus products should not be used in children under 3 years of age.

When applying insect repellents to children, avoid applying the repellent to their hands, around their eyes, or to any areas where there are cuts or irritated skin. Be sure your family stays comfortable and safe this summer by following these helpful insect repellent tips:

When using combination products with DEET and sunscreen, it may be necessary to reapply a sunscreen but the combination product should not be reapplied because repeated application may increase the potential toxic effects.

Apply repellents only to exposed skin.

Be sure repellents are EPA approved and be sure to read and follow the product directions for application.

And last, but not least - it is wise for everyone to wash treated skin with soap and water at the end of the day to avoid unneeded contamination of items such as bed linens.

Prevent Skin Cancers - Lather Up!

As we head out to enjoy the great outdoors this summer, be sure to protect your skin!  Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States with more than two million people being diagnosed each year. However, it is also one of the most preventable cancers.  Remember these tips the next time you head out:

Be proactive and prevent skin cancer by avoiding sunburns.  This means staying out of the sun between 10 and 4. family at beach square

Cover up with clothing or a wide brimmed hat.

Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher 30 minutes before going outside  and reapply every two hours.

Examine your skin from head to toe each month and report any changes to your physician.  Visit your doctor or dermatologist for a professional skin exam once a year.
