Take Care in the Heat
Summer has arrived. As we begin to venture outdoors, take these precautions to keep you and your family safe.
- Ease into it - Take it easy in the beginning and ramp up your workout over a few days so that you become accustomed to the heat at a slower rate. Avoid exercise during the hottest time of day; train closer to sunrise or sunset.
- Stay hydrated! - Begin hydrating 2 to 3 hours before activities and again after the activities.
- Wear Appropriate Clothing - Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that are light, loose-wicking clothing so sweat can evaporate.
- Use Sunscreen and Avoid Sunburn - Avoid sunburn as it can increase one's risk of dehydration. Use a waterproof sunblock that is SPF 15 or higher.
- Listen to your body - If you feel any headaches, fatigue or irritability or notice your exercise performance decreasing, stop exercising and cool off.
- Replace Lost Electrolytes - During exercise, one loses salt and minerals due to sweating. Use sports drinks or salty food to restore the lost sodium and electrolytes if your activity last longer than 90 minutes.
