Greetings!

This is an appeal to everybody to fill in your Census forms as enthusiastically and accurately as you can.

Why? Because in the new 'knowledge' economy, information is gold and one of the richest resources we have is the Census. There is no more extensive source of data about demand for goods, services and facilities; about how we are changing as a community and where those changes are taking place.

The results from Census 2011 are going to help us answer some important contemporary questions with regard to our changing living arrangements and access to housing, our levels of education, our use of the internet, and how our economy is changing - all things that I'm sure you'll agree are directly relevant to building and maintaining a good society at a time of rapid change.

Sincerely,

Ivan Motley

The eCensus - completing your Census form online

For the 2011 Census, the ABS is promoting and recommending the eCensus - the option for all households to complete a Census form on the Internet. eCensus was offered in 2006 but not heavily promoted. We look at how this works and the benefits of doing it this way, and a little of the technology which sits behind it.

Why are we excited about the 2011 Census?

The 2011 Census is just two weeks away. At .id, we deal with Census data every day, and both ourselves and our clients love the demographic stories it can tell about each suburb and town in Australia. There are many reasons to get excited about the 2011 Census because the magnitude of demographic change in the last five years is significant. Here are a few of the many questions on topical issues that the Census will answer ...

Celebrating 100 years of Census taking

Janet and Lailani attended the official launch of the 2011 Census in Sydney last night. It marked 100 years of Census taking in Australia - a celebration of who we are, where we are and how we live.

On August 9 the ABS will count everyone who is "in" Australia on that day - including people on Bass Strait oil rigs, in remote Aboriginal communities, in hospitals, prisons and camp grounds; grey nomads in their campervans, navy crew on submarines and scientists on Australian bases in Antarctica.

The 1911 Census counted 4.6 million people in Australia and didn't count Aboriginal people. Census collectors traveled by horse, bicycle and camel and the results of the 14 questions were tallied by hand.

By contrast, today the eCensus opens to the public and the ABS hopes that at least 30% of people will use it.

By any measure, the counting of the population is an extraordinary undertaking and provides us with a powerful resource for understanding who we are and for making decisions about how we want to live in the future. As we count down to the release of the data, keep an eye on our blog for updates.

City of West Torrens Housing Study assists with 30 Year Plan response - and changes Council priorities.

The City of West Torrens has recently conducted a housing study to assist in their response to The 30 Year Plan targets for West Torrens.

Conducted by .id consulting, the housing study looked at housing demand and supply, and identified a range of options for urban infill development.

The 30 Year Plan for Greater Adelaide, released by the Department of Planning and Local Government (DPLG) in early 2010, outlines growth targets for significant population growth in SA, requiring a corresponding increase in urban dwelling density.

"The DPLG has shown a clear commitment to inner city development." explains Melissa Chrystal, Strategic Planner at West Torrens.read more..

Australia's migrants - who are they and how are they changing?

The publication Migration, Australia (ABS Cat. No 3412.0) is an annual release by the ABS. It provides more detailed information about the characteristics of migrants (both overseas and interstate) than is available in other non-Census demographic releases.

A recent article published in The Age in response to the latest release of data created a storm amongst its readers when it was reported that the Asian born population in Australian would soon overtake the European born.  We examine the facts in this blog.

How do you conduct a census without a written language?

In the 15th century, the Inca Empire had a unique way to record census information. The Incas did not have any written language but recorded information collected during censuses and other numeric information as well as non-numeric data on quipus, strings from llama or alpaca hair or cotton cords with numeric and other values encoded by knots in a base-10 positional system.
