"PJ Library has been the main source of integrating Judaism into our home and educating my children about their heritage. We've attended community events that we would otherwise have not known about but for the PJ Library website. It's really been such a gift for which we are so grateful."

Greetings!
That warm weather we've dreamed about is finally here! Change is in the air. This can be such a relief for some children and parents: fewer deadlines... less structure... more freedom - that is the theory anyway. But it seems that these changes bring new challenges for parents/family managers. Hopefully the stress lessens for you over the next couple of months and you may even find some time to sssllloooooowwww dddooowwwnn. Building in down time is essential for parents and children. So often we just fill that extra time with new activities and keep going going going. Caution ... don't do it. Rest! Enjoy unstructured time to just sit, laugh, dance and be silly.
Also, take advantage of this time to read to your child differently, more often and off schedule. Are you taking time to ask questions before turning the page? Do you add in spontaneous reading time when you child wanders over to the bookshelf? When you slow down and enjoy the details such as the illustrations, the way that the words appear on the page as well as opportunities to imagine what else is happening in the story, you are helping your child develop critical reading skills and use his or her creativity.
At the PJ Library international conference in April, the keynote speaker Diane W. Frankenstein shared her expertise about how to raise children who love to read. Her book:
Reading Together, Everything You Need to Know to Raise A Child Who Loves to Read
is an excellent resource for parents and teachers alike. It includes tips about "The Art of Conversational Reading" along with reading guides to 101 different children's books, and a list of subjects, values and emotions that arise from the many books we read to children. Feel free to click on the link above to learn more about this amazing guide. And remember, you can also develop your family's unique rituals for fun reading time.
We hope your summer is filled with delightful family time.
Happy reading!
