This May, everyone at our office is gearing up for big charity fitness fundraising events. These public outpourings of generosity combined with a commitment to fitness truly exemplify the best of everything Texas has to offer. The weather inspires us to get outside with our friends, clients, and fellow cyclists and runners who always inspire us. If you are interested in participating or supporting the WildRide!, WildRun! or Sam's MS150 Bike Tour to Cure MS, you'll find links in the lower right column.
From all of us at Tannery & Co, we wish you a glorious May. And don't forget Mom on May 8!

Travel to Find Yourself This Spring
| | Hill Country bike ride in May |
Most people plan their trips around what they want to see, but a few years ago, we shifted our thinking to what we wanted to DO or LEARN. Sure, we still plan a relaxing vacation now and then, but we really do enjoy a challenging trip to ramp up our fitness or try out a new sport. Texas is blessed with a variety of world-class fitness retreat and vacation centers.
For tennis lovers or wannabes, there's nothing better than the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch near Austin. Experienced players can attend "Fantasy Camp" and play with legends of the sport. They accomodate players at every level, with superb accomodations in a gorgeous setting near New Braunfels. Visit www.newktennis.com.
Texas is home to one of the highest-rated wellness resorts in the world: Lake Austin Spa. You can choose to be as active or lazy as you want, but they offer extensive fitness classes and gourmet spa meals for those looking to drop a few pounds. We like the combination of challenging classes mixed with educational seminars on all aspects of wellness. The boat cruises or lakeside yoga classes aren't bad, either! www.lakeaustin.com.
You simply must put cycling through the Hill Country in May on your bucket list. www.cycletexas.com has a great list of day trips for all levels of riders, and you can string them together with stays at local B&Bs for a truly memorable vacation. For example, CycleTexas lists a fairly flat 17-mile lazy ride from Fredericksburg to Stonewall. Plus, this trip takes you right by LBJ Ranch National Park where you can always find an abundance of wildflowers. |

Time to Graduate to a Real College Savings Plan? This time of year, graduation seems to be on everyone's mind. This can bring with it the fears about your ability to fund your child's, grandchild's, or even your own education. Many parents, in the face of ever-increasing college costs, tend to develop paralysis by analysis and do nothing!
We find our clients feel better about saving for college when they have a real plan and investment discipline in place. We help them identify and plan for different college scenarios.
Tax-advantaged college savings plans fall into three basic types:
I. 529 Plans: These plans are operated by a state or educational institution designed to help families set aside funds for future college costs. If you are earning over $80K or $160K jointly annually, then the 529 is clearly the choice for you as your contributions are not limited. A giant misunderstanding is that these funds are set aside for specific and public schools. The truth is, you can live in Texas, invest in a 529 in California and use your savings to fund a private school in Vermont.
Advantages:
- You can set aside up to $300,000 per child, depending upon the plan
- No time or age limit--so your little darling can still be pursuing a BA at age 36 and still be funded, unlike the Coverdell
- You can set up a 529 for yourself at any age if you are planning to attend college or graduate school in the future, or transfer it to another beneficiary in your family
Disadvantages: - Cannot be used for primary or secondary schools
- Investments are often limited to a few choices
II. Pre-paid tuition plans: 12 states now offer pre-paid tuition plans such as the Texas Tomorrow Fund. They operate much like a 529 savings plan. If you are an 8th generation Aggie, this may be worth considering. One advantage is that you can lock down tuition costs, thus protecting yourself against college costs that have been escalating faster than inflation. Two big downsides: - Some are school-specific. If your child rebels against going to your alma mater, your only options might be to transfer the money to another child or withdraw the savings with penalties.
- They have a much bigger impact on your child's ability to qualify for financial aid. They are considered an asset just like a scholarship and aid is reduced dollar for dollar for pre-paid tuition savings.
III. Coverdell education savings accounts (ESAs): Named in honor of the late Senator Paul Coverdell (R-GA), this plan was set up by Congress as an incentive to save for school expenses.
Advantages: - Can be used for not only college but primary & secondary school expenses
- Amounts deposited grow tax-free and are distributed tax-free if used for qualified expenses
- Allows almost any form of investment including stocks, bonds and mutual funds
Disadvantages: - Amount per year limited to $2,000 total per child
- Cannot be used for anyone over age 18 except qualified special needs
- Must be distributed by age 30 or subject to withdrawal penalties
- Income levels may affect ability to contribute. For the 2010 tax year, couples filing jointly earning over $160,000 AGI became ineligible.
- Because of the limit on annual contributions, many brokerages do not offer Coverdell plans
Rodney Jarrell, a Dallas-based educational consultant with Berkshire Education, recommends that, no matter what type of plan you choose, the money not be put in the child's name. "Then it won't count against them for financial aid," he says. "Also, I recommend your child not work too much senior year or they will be punished in being able to qualify for aid. 50% of their earnings over $3,000 is forfeited in their qualifications for financial aid." Rodney helps students and their families with all aspects of college planning, and especially qualifying for merit and need-based aid. For more information, contact rodneyjarrell@berkshireeducation.com or visit www.DFWCollegePlanning.com. At Tannery & Company, we can help you set up a 529 or Coverdell Plan. We can also model future college costs for your children or grandchildren and incorporate that into your overall wealth management plan. Call us for more information.
Please note: this article is not an exhaustive list of features of each type of college savings plan. Individual circumstances may vary. |

It's Never Too Late to Learn Something New!
Albert Einstein once said, "Learning is not a product of schooling but the lifelong attempt to acquire it." School isn't just for kids anymore. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, almost half of the adult population in the United States (43 percent for men, 49 percent for women) are enrolled in some form of lifelong learning. A dedication to learning is the best way to remain competitive in the marketplace. As you age, it helps the mind stay sharp and is a proven weapon against the onset of Alzheimer's.
This year, we've enjoyed training on a wide variety of social media and cutting-edge marketing tools to help put valuable information in the hands of our clients. Tina is studying photography and Michael aims at starting an MBA in entrepreneurship in an effort to better support his small business owner/clients.
If you live in the Dallas area, we are fortunate to have a number of adult learning resources. Our favorite for continuing ed is SMU-in-Plano, an extension of Southern Methodist University. Their most popular courses include thought-provoking classes in art history, philosophy, and global studies. Most community colleges offer adult-friendly classes so you can introduce yourself to the latest in technology, learn a language, or pick up a new job skill.
We also like the many online and CD-based training courses, especially those offered by Great Courses that include topics ranging from quantum physics to creative writing to nutrition. Going overseas sometime soon? Our friends swear by the effectiveness of Rosetta Stone language learning software. For the sheer fun of it, we enjoy taking a cooking class together. Locally, you can find courses at Central Market (caution, they book up fast) or the 17th Summer Season at the Dallas Farmer's Market featuring well-known local chefs.
So, with such a bounty of educational opportunities in front of you, what will you pick next? If you have any recommendations or personal learning stories we can forward to our readers, send them to sarah@tannerywealth.com. |

Chrissy's Corner
In May, I just have to get outdoors and enjoy our amazing weather. Some of you know I am an avid camper, and we love to pull our fifth-wheel camper up to Lake Texoma. By May, the water is warm enough to swim. Husband Matt and I particularly enjoy staying at the Cedar Mills Resort.
I'm also hard at work on the weekends training for the upcoming WildRide!Against Cancer on May 21. More than 2,000 cyclists gather during the Wildflower Festival here in Richardson to ride 16, 40 or 64 miles through Plano and out to Lake Lavon. I have a spiffy new Trek bike and can't wait to get out there! Care to join me? Register here. |

Tina's Tip
Go Red for Women!
June 10 11-1:30pm
Hilton Anatole Dallas
Dust off your favorite red dress and join me at this annual luncheon to raise money and awareness for women's heart health. Sponsored by the American Heart Association and a number of local corporate sponsors, this luncheon celebrates the power of women to band together to wipe out the number one killer of women.
Keynote speaker Nancy Lieberman, basketball legend and author, will talk about her new book, Playbook for Success which teaches the basics every women needs to succeed. There will also be breakout sessions, a silent auction, and health screenings.
I'm hoping enough of you will contact me that we can reserve a table of friends for the event. A ticket costs $125 per person, and some of that is a tax-deductible contribution to cure heart disease. Call me or email tina@tannerywealth.com. For more information about the event, click here.
The Chair of the event this year is our good friend Susan Arledge of Arledge Partners, a commercial real estate company. Arledge Partners, headquartered at Mockingbird Station in Dallas, was named the 2001 Fastest Growing Company in the Metroplex and has been racking up attention and awards as it has extended its client base both here and around the world. Susan herself has been recognized by D Magazine as one of the Forty Under Forty Profiles of Future Dallas Business Leaders. |

Michael's Mission
Garmin ForeRunner 305
This time of year, you won't find me without my Garmin 305. In May, we ramp up for the big fundraising cycling events, so we are training hard. This GPS-enabled personal trainer and cycle computer has a heart-rate monitor and an advanced speed/cadence sensor, so it really gives me an edge in my training. You can also use this for other motion sports such as cross-country skiing.
If you are ready to take your cycling to the next level, you really need to check this out. Click here to view on amazon.com.

Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action
We LOVE this book! From the Amazon.com description:
Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over?
This book has helped us to start with WHY as we formulate our client communications. The reviews are overwhelmingly five-star. You'll find the message to be simple, yet powerful. Check it out! |

Event Calendar
Don't forget the most important event in May--MOTHER"S DAY! Here are a few other notable events in our area:
One of our friends is involved in this great organization which asks people everywhere to set aside May 6 as a day to support a nonprofit. We like the Walk for Max on their website.
If you love older homes, this is the best tour in North Texas. Great for Mom!
Now in its 20th year, this great regional artfest in Richardson features great music, food and art in the park.
More info above in Chrissy's Corner.
Named the "Best of the Fests" by D Magazine and always a treat with bands, food, entertainment, and more. Don't miss it!
May 30 Memorial Day Holiday
Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, is a day set aside to observe the sacrifices of soldiers and their families who have lost their lives in service to our country. |
