Michael & Tina on BridgeSpring in Texas--it doesn't get any better than this! If you think you don't have time to get out and see our Texas wildflowers this month, then you need to take a serious look at your priorities.

People often ask us where our signature photo (above) of the farmhouse and bluebonnets was taken. PS Photographers (Pattie Lofton & Sherry Pollett) captured that shot just outside of Marble Falls, Texas.

From all of us at Tannery & Co, we wish you a beautiful April!

The Great Texas Bluebonnet Hunt

BluebonnetsIf you're a true Texan, this time of year you feel that URGE to jump in your car and find a patch of bluebonnets. Peak days for bluebonnet spotting vary depending on where you are and the early spring rains. In the southwestern Hill Country, around Bandera and Boerne, peak days are usually in late March through the first week in April. Closer to where we are, bluebonnets peak around the third week in April.

Most of the bluebonnet trails are off the beaten path, and good eateries are hard to find. Your best choice is to pack a picnic, complete with some good Texas hill country wine. If you happen to be in the area, our favorite winery is Becker Vineyards, in the heart of bluebonnet country.

If you are planning a daytrip to see the bluebonnets, here are a few prime areas:
  1. Ennis Bluebonnet Festival. It's quite amazing to have this little slice of Hill Country so close to Dallas. Just 40 minutes away, Ennis hosts a bluebonnet trail second to none in Texas. In their 60th Festival year, Ennis opens its trails from April 1-30, with the official festival weekend on April 16-17 this year. These people are SERIOUS about their flowers. The Visitor Center is manned during April only, and they have free maps and tips on the best photo opportunities. For more information, click here.
  2. Burnet--the Bluebonnet Capital of Texas. Burnet, about 40 miles northwest of Austin, holds their official 28th Annual Bluebonnet Festival from April 8-10. Click here for info.
  3. LBJ Ranch east of Frederickburg. See where Lady Bird Johnson was inspired to spark the nation's interest in wildflowers. You can drive yourself around the grounds of the ranch, administered by the National Park Service. For information, click here.

Where else but Texas would you have a Wildflower Hot Line? 800-452-9292. This website is devoted to all forms of Texas wildflowers, with the latest information on best sightings all across the state, and this site is devoted exclusively to wildflower sightings and chats. Get out there!

What's in YOUR Investment Garden?

Some people we know are very enthusiastic gardeners when it comes to planting the seeds in the soil and imagining the great results. Yet if you want to reap a rich harvest, you've got to water, fertilize, pull weeds, and harvest at the peak of perfection. If you don't, you'll wind up with a sorry patch of inedible weeds.

So it is with investing. The old "Buy, Hold & Hope" strategy may have worked in the big stock run-up of the 1990s, where practically anything you bought grew up to be big and strong--until the infamous correction of 2001. Let's look at how you can tend YOUR investment garden so that you'll have a richer harvest:

  1. Watering--I've seen articles that claim if you set aside $5 early enough, you can retire rich. Yet with low returns on savings right now and uncertainty with the Social Security Fund, we recommend to our clients that they stash at least 10% of their after-tax income into savings. You don't want to over-water your portfolio, either--setting aside so much cash that you rob yourself of enjoyment along the way. We use the Tannery Family Index to give clients a better picture of how much and when you need to save to meet important life goals.
  2. Fertilizing--just as organic fertilizer adds nutrients to the soil to boost growth, so does the prudent investor add some noncorrelating alternative investments* to boost potential returns. First, you should have at least six months of income in liquid assets and pay off high-interest-rate debt. Then, you are ready to add that fertilizer--the higher potential growth investments to the mix.
  3. Weeding--underperforming investments can choke out the overall growth of your portfolio. People can develop an emotional attachment to certain investments; I've seen them ride pet stocks all the way to the bottom. Enron comes to mind. This is where we, as objective third-party wealth managers, can help identify investments that may need to be yanked out of your portfolio. We have tools more effective than a Garden Weasel to pop those unattractive investments out of your portfolio.
  4. Harvesting--I've seen neighbors who plant lovely gardens yet turn their backs just as the harvest comes ripe. They are left with a rotting mess! In investing, it takes just as much skill to know when to harvest as when to plant. We have a few clients who successfully amassed considerable fortunes yet did not have a clue how to harvest their returns to fund their post-retirement lifestyle. We put together a harvesting schedule to generate the cash flow they need.

How does your investment garden grow? Is it time for a spring clean-up? Call us!

*NOTE: Investing in alternative investments may not be suitable for all investors and involves special risks such as risk associated with leveraging the investment, potential adverse market forces, regulatory changes, and potential illiquidity. There is no assurance that the investment objective will be attained.

Get Out and Garden!

Home gardening has truly swept the country by storm. Michelle Obama raised awareness by tilling her own plot at the White House last spring. (For information, click here.)  Celebrity chef and foodie Jamie Oliver kicked it up a notch with his national campaign for school gardens as a way to combat juvenile obesity.
This time every spring, we grow giddy over the possibilities in our little suburban garden plot. We enjoy growing unusual vegetables that are difficult to find in local stores, such as Chioggia (candy cane) beets, the delicate Rosa Bianca white eggplant, brilliant red dragon carrots, and rare heirloom tomatoes.
Our favorite place to shop in the spring is Northaven Gardens. Named in the "Best of Big D 2010" issue of D Magazine as the best garden shop, they deserve it. They have a bewildering array of herbs, heirloom tomatoes, and rare seeds and plants, along with old favorites. Follow this link to get $5 off your next purchase (valid through May 26, 2011).
This time of year, we also like to tackle our spring landscaping spruce-up. Jill Hawkins, co-owner of Hawkins Landscape, offers these tips:
  • Start by cleaning out your landscaping beds and pulling early emerging weeds.
  • MULCH! Put down new mulch on all your beds--it will help your plants retain moisture and hold down weeds.
  • Add seasonal color. In late March, petunias, geraniums and snapdragons are excellent choices for spring gardens, but they tend to fade in the heat of the summer. In April, plant more heat-resistant flowers such as begonias or impatiens. Our favorite choice for annual color is the penta, or star flower. Butterflies love it! If you want hummingbirds, buy the hot pink or dark red shades.
  • Replace old plants that don't quite work with your soil conditions or sun exposure. There are two new plants that are really hot on the landscaping scene, with good reason. We like the new mahonia "Soft Caress" with its bright yellow flowers and berries through the winter. There is also a great new nandina variety--the Flirt. It offers better color than the old-style dwarf nandina and stays lower in the garden.

Jill would be happy to give you a free consult on your lawn or landscape. 972-529-2926 or hawkinslandscape@sbcglobal.net. For 25 years, they have provided full-service landscaping design, installation, and lawncare throughout the north Dallas, Plano, Fairview & Allen area. Tell her we sent you!

"Isn't it appropriate that the month of the tax begins with April Fool's Day and ends with cries of 'May Day!'?"

Chrissy's CornerChrissy Patchin

This time of year, I get a lot of calls from stressed-out folks about the looming tax deadline. I say, B--R--E--A--T--H--E! Feeling the burden of stress makes you more prone to make errors.

Staying organized all year with your financial data is the best way to avoid last-minute filing stress. Most of our clients love the ease and practicality of our On-Line Wealth Manager, where you can keep all your important financial, tax, and banking information.

Much of the stress seems to come from the do-it-yourselfers. Profesional CPAs may be cheaper than you think, and most of them will go to bat for you with the IRS in case of an audit. It may be worth it just to take the anxiety out of your annual tax prep.

The best way to remove stress from ANY of life's situation is to get plenty of exercise daily, rest and eat right. Yes, I do sound like your mother, but she was right! Join me for a run? I'm up early usually every morning--not that MY job is stressful! Call me if you're interested.

Celebrate Earth Day!
Donate Used Clothing

Earth Day in 2011 actually falls on Friday, April 22 but Heart House of Dallas is organizing a city-wide Earth Day Clothing Drive for Saturday, April 23. Recycling your gently used clothing helps the planet and raises needed funds for one of my favorite charities.

Heart House helps at-risk kids from kindergarten through the 8th grade by providing a safe place after school to do homework and play. They offer an amazing, enriched curriculum in literature, math, science, social studies, art, music, physical education, and other disciplines.

Along with my friend and marketing guru Donna Bender, I've organized a donation location right here at our offices. Bring your used clothing to our II Creeks office location on Saturday anytime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers will be standing by in the parking lot to give you receipts for your donation. For a map to II Creeks, click here.

For more information about Heart House, visit www.hearthouse.org.

GasBuddy

Everybody needs some help with gas prices these days and until the Middle East/North Africa situation settles out, it looks like we'll be in for significant price hikes.

GasBuddy is a wonderful FREE app for the Iphone and Android that shows you where the cheapest gas is closest to your present location. What could be better than that?
If you don't have a smart phone, you can also go straight to their website for the same information at www.gasbuddy.com.
