Michael & Tina on BridgeAre you prepared for February's onslaught of red and pink? The intersection of love and money known as Valentine's Day pumps over $14 billion into the U.S. economy. The recession hasn't slowed down spending when it comes to love! The average American spent $103 last year.* Men spend more than women and single people spend more than married ones. We share some ideas below to help you celebrate romance.

Many of our clients are single, and we know that Valentine's Day can be rough for you. Pamper yourself, try something completely new, or reach out to loved ones to shift the focus from yourself. Whether married or single, love in all its splendor is something to celebrate!

Michael & Tina

Valentine's Day Retreats

Elm Creek Manor
Elm Creek Manor in Muenster, TX
In a random survey of clients and friends recently, we discovered that people prefer uninterrupted, quality time away for romance over lavish gifts for Valentine's Day. With the hectic pace of our practice, we truly cherish time away. Below are two of our favorite romantic hideaways.

Elm Creek Manor (photo, left) is our go-to place when we need to get away. Tucked away in a lovely rural setting just minutes north of Dallas in Muenster, this is a gem that you must visit at least once in your lifetime. We like to stay there every year after the Germanfest Bike Rally which winds up in Muenster. This year's 100-mile ride is on April 30; click here for details. Their five-course gourmet meals, available only to registered guests, feature organic vegetables and fruit grown at the ranch, plus their amazing ranch-raised aged beef. For more information, click here. When you call, tell Marsha and Brad that the Tannerys sent you.

If we have a bit more time to drive, we'll head down to the Texas Hill Country to the Palo Alto Creek Farm in Fredericksburg. The photos on the website (link above) don't do it justice! The minute you set foot on the property, you are transported back in time to the quiet and peaceful pace of rural Texas. Set beside the sparkling Palo Alto River, this classic Texas B&B still has all the original outbuildings from when it was settled by German farmers in 1854. Palo Alto Creek books out way in advance and only has four guest suites, so plan ahead if you wish to visit. This place is no "Green Acres." They offer gourmet food and full-up spa services to their guests.
The Perfect Gift for Your Valentine

For Valentine's Day, candy and flowers are fine. However, as wealth managers, may we suggest something that really shows you care?

Nothing says "I love you" like a shiny new life insurance policy. Before you race out to buy an
expensive gift for your loved one, first check to see if you carry adequate life insurance coverage. You'd be better off spending money to protect them in the odd chance you aren't immortal. Life insurance proceeds will certainly last longer than a dozen roses or gourmet chocolates. At the jacked-up holiday prices for flowers, life insurance could be the more affordable choice.

In our practice, no one really seeks out a conversation about life insurance products because, face it--death is involved. It's a difficult conversation to have, as often myths and facts collide in consumers' minds. Basically, there are just two types: permanent and term insurance, and both products have a place in your overall wealth plan.

The primary wage earner in a marriage may be adequately insured, typically through employee benefit plans. Yet the other spouse is often woefully underinsured. Couples do not take into consideration the time and money it takes to raise children if they had to do it alone. In the late '90s, Michael went through a period of being a divorced single father for three years. He discovered he had significantly more expenses and less time at work which had an impact on his earnings ability.

Life insurance should always be looked at in the context of an overall wealth management plan. For example, life insurance can be held by a trust, thus bypassing estate tax. Talk to a qualified wealth advisor, your estate attorney or your CPA about the tax implications of life insurance and estate planning.
Choosing Champagne & Chocolate

CavaNothing is more perfect for Valentine's Day than sharing a bottle of fine champagne and some gourmet chocolate. Our advice on choosing the right brands? Spend less on champagne and more on chocolate.

Michael and Tina's sentimental favorite for Valentine's Day is a Spanish cava called Segura Viudas Brut Reserva. This was served--by mistake--at our wedding! You can't call it champagne unless made in the Champagne region of France. We think cava is a spunkier version of champagne, and this one is loaded with personality. Just the right blend of bubbles and character. The hand-blown bottle with the distinctive silver coaster is a gift all by itself! You can snag a bottle for around $20 and have enough left over from what you would have spent on overpriced Dom Perignon to buy flowers and chocolate. In our opinion, cavas are priced at a fraction of the price of a similar quality French version.
Chrissy and Sarah are not convinced. They are loyal to their favorite French Veuve Clicquot. While prices tend to spike for Valentine's Day, at last check you could find a bottle at Costco for under $40--a real bargain when you consider its rating against much pricier champagnes.
When it comes to buying chocolate, do not cut corners. In our office, if it's chocolate, it's got to be dark chocolate which has significant health benefits. See the science behind eating dark chocolate here

Sorry to say that chocolates worth buying aren't found at the drug store. Plan ahead this year to order some of the world's finest for your Valentine. For the best combination of exquisite taste, quality, presentation guaranteed to sweep anyone off their feet, and sheer artistry, here are three world-class chocolatiers we highly recommend:

Recchiuti Confections of San Francisco
Richart Paris with offices in New York
J. Dorian Chocolatier right here in Addison

If you have other chocolates you think are worthy of our recommendation, please send a sample box to our office address below.

Chrissy's ChallengeChrissy Patchin

Team Tannery is participating in the Livestrong Austin Half Marathon on February 20. I'm challenging myself to beat my personal best of 2:30. The race is filling up, so if you are interested in participating in this great race to beat cancer, you'll find a sign-up link below.

I'm challenging Tina Tannery to this challenge: whoever comes in second treats the other to lunch at the restaurant of your (most probably my) choice. The race is on! Join Michael at the finish line to watch the final sprint.

Tina's Tip

Women, join me and millions of other women across the country on Friday, February 4 as we celebrate national Wear Red Day.

The Heart Truth established this day in 2002 as an urgent wake-up call to raise awareness about women and heart disease. While many women worry about breast cancer, heart disease remains the Number 1 killer of women.

Wearing red reminds women to protect their heart health and inspires them to take action. Heart disease can be reduced or eliminated through lifestyle modifications, such as regular exercise and proper nutrition. To find out more, click here.
Michael's Mission
Solid Line IPad Keyboard

Most of you who know me understand that I am a certifiable gearhead. I'm loving my IPad and wasn't convinced I needed a keyboard accessory until Tina surprised me with one as a gift. She did quite a bit of research and chose one from Solid Line that she bought at Brookstone. This IPad case integrated with a keyboard has really made quite an impact on my productivity.

This great device is wireless, which frees up the connector for other hard-wired gear. If you own an IPad, take a look at the Solid Line website.
What We're Reading
The Fred Factor:
How Passion in Your Work and Life Can Turn the Ordinary into the Extraordinary
by Mark Sanborn

Fred Factor
The Fred Factor, first published in 2004, is one of the highest-rated books on excelling in business and life currently in print. This very slim tome, only 124 pages, is simple yet compelling. Sanborn, a well-known motivational speaker, weaves his lessons around Fred the mailcarrier who always went the extra mile. While others might view his job as drudgery, he looked for opportunities every day to make a difference for the people he served. Great lessons in here about building strong relationships and creating value for customers without spending a penny. Take a look at it here.
