Launch Your New Year with a Retreat!

Rough Creek LodgeWe love the G. K. Chesterton quotation (right). Each year, we try to take our "new eyes and new ears" and go away on retreat to set our goals for the upcoming year. We return refreshed, renewed, and with "new feet, new hands and a new backbone" to execute our fresh-laid plans.

One of our all-time favorite places to go on retreat is Rough Creek Lodge close to Dallas, www.roughcreek.com. If you want to think in new ways, a great creativity technique is to tackle something completely new. Check out Rough Creek's list of 80 Things to Do, including their 675-foot double zip line, fossil hunting, or a nocturnal Varmint Hunt. We enjoy relaxing in the spa (hot stone massage, anyone?), and physical challenges such as rock climbing or sporting clays. Maybe this year it will be bungee trampoline! We LOVE to bootscoot, so we eventually wind up at the City Limits honky-tonk nearby. Rough Creek has been showered with recognition, from One of the Top Five Places to Get Married (NBC TV) to Conde Nast's Traveler Gold List of the Best Places in the World to Stay.

Step out boldly into 2011! Here are some tips to aid you in your strategic planning for the New Year:
  1. Before you start the goal-setting process, take time to celebrate your 2010 successes. As an annual benchmark, make a tradition of writing down your past year's accomplishments.
  2. Analyze your challenges in 2010 and what held you back. Strategize how you can redirect your energy to overcome these challenges.
  3. Inventory your gifts and deep think how you love to spend your time. Build a plan for 2011 to capitalize on these things.
  4. Visualize total success--what would that look like for you? How would you spend your time?
  5. Keep in mind that for every new thing you take on, something has to go. Too many people strap on an ambitious new set of goals in January, only to realize that there is no room in their schedule to be successful with them.
  6. Strike a balance between professional and personal goals. Set goals that nurture all five elements of a well-lived life: physical, emotional, financial, intellectual, and spiritual.
  7. Rather than set only large do-or-die annual goals, we like to set monthly goals or themes for our office, and then organize our tactics and To-Dos around these monthly goals.
From all of us at Tannery & Company Wealth Management, we wish you a happy and prosperous 2011.
Get Organized for 2011!

If you are like some of our new clients, you've got file folders stuffed with old financial records, accounts all over the place, and vital documents tucked away everywhere, from shoeboxes to bank vaults. Our Wealth Manager organizes everything in one place, at your fingertips. You can upload financial accounts from virtually any bank or brokerage, and view your financial performance all in one place, no matter where your assets are held.

"The Number 1 way to get organized is to get a handle on all your paper," says Dallas-based organizational expert Tonia Tomlin, owner of Sorted Out. "Setting up a good filing system so that you can access key documents quickly is the key to productivity," she says. On her website, Tonia includes a helpful set of guidelines on how long to retain documents plus other great organizational tips. A popular speaker on TV and in workshops, you can see her at the Dallas Home Improvement Show in February (see website). We'll be featuring her as part of our upcoming spring seminar series--more information coming! Sign up here for notification on our upcoming workshops for women.

We believe our Wealth Manager provides that ideal filing system for your key documents, from wills to powers of attorney to copies of driver's licenses. As part of our total wealth management approach, we scan those documents and upload them into a secure Internet location that can be accessed from anywhere.

No one likes to contemplate disaster, but storing your documents in Wealth Manager protects them from fire, smoke, burglars, even flooding. For example, safety deposit vaults have flooded in major banks from Chicago to Memphis to New Orleans. You can also upload scanned copies of your passport, driver's license, and credit cards. This may be a godsend if you ever have documents stolen while traveling. Heaven forbid you have a house fire but it does happen. If your tax records are destroyed, the IRS does not exempt you if called in for an audit--you'll still need to provide proof for your deductions or you could potentially have them backed out of your return.

Shape Up for the New Year

Every year in January, the gyms fill up with out-of-shape, overweight folks trying to sweat off their holiday poundage. Yet by the end of February, these people are nowhere to be found. Trouble is, people quickly discover that taking off pounds is a lot more difficult than putting them on!

"Start slow," says Mike Thornton, owner of Transformational Boot Camp. "People are always surprised when I say that, but I encourage people to start where they are. In January, people make too many abrupt changes in their health and fitness routines only to burn out by the end of February. One of our great boot camp motivational secrets is that we have a community that holds one another accountable to fitness goals. We also allow people to work at their own pace towards improvement." Michael Tannery has been going to Transformational Boot Camp at 5:30 M-W-F for several months. "It's made a huge difference in my energy level," he says. For more information, visit www.transformationbootcamp.com. Join us!

Speaking of joining us, Team Tannery will be competing in the Live Healthy 100 Day Wellness Challenge, a national program to boost America's fitness level. It's a simple program--for 100 days, you simply keep track of how many minutes you exercise weekly, or how much weight you have lost (which is kept confidential). Visit www.livehealthyamerica.org to find out more. It costs only $20 to participate, and has motivated millions of people to reach their fitness goals. Sponsored by our local Chamber of Commerce, the kick-off begins mid-January and teams start tracking their goals January 20. Sign up today--we'd love to have you join our team! Only 6 spots are left, so respond now by clicking here.
If you need help with eating healthier in the New Year, we are quite impressed with the local Dallas-area company My Fit Foods. If you hate to cook or just don't have time, they offer high-quality, nutritious prepared meals. Check out their website for more information.
Thank You for Your Donations!
Network Gift
Tina with Network's Volunteer Coordinator, Kendall Johnson
We'd like to thank the people who donated books to our first annual book drive for The Network of Community Ministries. Network plans to use them as a resource in their lobby where families (with wiggly children) wait for appointments. The Network helps out local families with food, resources, counseling, and temporary aid to help avert homelessness. To find out more, visit www.thenetwork.org.

Children's books are very dear to Tina's heart. She is an avid collector as well as a donor to local charities. For example, one of her favorites is pictured left, an autographed copy of the children's classic, What to Do About Alice? by Barbara Kerley and illustrated by Edwin Fotheringham.

Next year, Tina plans to step up her commitment to placing a good, new children's book in every Richardson-area home. If you would like to help out with this exciting initiative, click here.
As a valued client or friend of Tannery & Company Wealth Management, thank you for spending time with us today. If you have any financial issues or concerns, pick up the phone and give us a call. We are always happy to hear from you and welcome your referrals.

On the New Year...

The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year.  It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes.  Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions.  Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective.  ~G.K. Chesterton, English writer and pundit

I'm very proud to report I achieved a personal best at the recent White Rock Half Marathon. After taking a little downtime, I'm interested in powering up for the Team Tannery 100-Day Fitness Challenge as the Team Captain. (See information at bottom left). If you have any questions about the program, please call me at 214.239.4700. With this program, you get a great fitness dashboard to help you achieve your goals, plus we'll plan some fun group activities during the 100 days from January through April where we'll work out as a team.

Are you competitive? I know I am. Each week, you'll see how our team stacks up against 100s of teams locally, plus across the nation. If you are interested in joining Team Tannery, shoot me an e-mail at Chrissy@tannerywealth.com. I'll send you more information as we get closer to January 20 when we launch.
Michael's Mission
Notetaker HD

My hands-down favorite app on my Ipad has to be Notetaker HD. If you own an Ipad, you've GOT to look into it. It actually makes notetaking FUN--you can enter notes with your finger or a stylus.  Make a mistake? Use the nub end of the stylus and simply erase. I can't possibly list all the ways this improves my productivity.

When you're done with your notes, you can save them as PDF files or e-mail them. You can add tags to your notes so you can retrieve them by keywords. At only $4.99, it will save you money quickly over the cost of yellow pads. Plus, what are you going to do with hundreds of pages of yellow sheets of paper with random notes, anyway?
What We're Reading
The Power of Who:
You Already Know Everyone You Need to Know
by Bob Beaudine

Power of Who
The Power of Who is a GREAT book to launch your New Year! Bob Beaudine, noted Dallas author and SMU alum, wrote this inspiring book that is a must-read if you are an independent professional or small business owner trying to make it in our tough economy.
Event Calendar

If you want to think and act in new ways in 2011, then we challenge you to try something out of character. If you are a cultural snoot, go see our amazing Dallas Mavs who are on a tear! Try tango or ballroom dancing at Studio 22, with some of the hottest dance instructors in town. Yankees, get over yourself and bootscoot on over to W. W. Fairfields, one of our favorite Richardson dives that always has great bands and serious two-steppin. Or try your hand at golfing in January when you'll have the course mostly to yourself. For beginners, we recommend the very affordable Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson.
 ATT Performing Arts Center
We LOVED this movie! Now it's a stage musical. Click on link above for ticket information.

January 15 Post Addison Hot Chocolate Run
You know you need some exercise! This is a great 5K/10K run starting in Addison Circle.

January 15 Al Jarreau
Don't miss "our greatest living jazz singer" (Time Magazine) perform at the Eisemann Center.

January 27 Fearless Forecast
 See Tina's Tips above.

January 31 Tango Buenos Aires at Bass Hall
If you've never been to Bass Hall in Fort Worth, this would be a great introduction. The building itself is an architectural jewel. Parking is free and the Hall is surrounded by interesting restaurants for dinner before or after the show.
