Santa On His Way to Richardson!
Santa's Village
Some people long to visit exotic Christmas destinations this time of year--New York's 5th Avenue, or the Christmas markets in Europe. Michael grew up here, so naturally his favorite Christmas destination every year is Richardson's own Santa's Village. (Tina grew up in Houston, but got here as fast as she could.)

Now in its 21st year, Santa's Village has an endearing charm that appeals to people of all ages. About 500 volunteers from local civic organizations manage and staff the little houses that delight young and old. Michael Massey, head of Richardson's Parks and Rec Department and original visionary for this signature event, says "We wanted our city to offer a fun, free place where families could be together during the holidays in a noncommercial atmosphere. Nobody has a hand out for your money as you stroll the streets of our beautiful village. The joy it brings people is beyond belief!"

"Santa's Village has become a 'must attend' December event for people of all ages from across the Dallas area," says Richardson Mayor Gary Slagel. "I'm always impressed with our residents who are so generous in volunteering their time. The night I look forward to every year is the lighting of the towering pecan tree in front of City Hall on opening night. On December 4, we Council members will preside over the ceremonial first lighting of the tree that turns our City Hall Plaza into a true Winter Wonderland. Don't miss it!"

Chrissy Patchin Mother GooseOur own Chrissy Patchin served recently as the ever popular Mother Goose (photo, right with Richardson friend & Chamber of Commerce Board Chair Jeanne Hooker). Santa's Village is open for ten nights in December from 6 to 9 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive promptly at 6 p.m., not on a sleigh but on a bright red city firetruck! It operates rain or shine, and only closes if driving is deemed unsafe. Everything is free, from admission to the balloon sculptures to the reindeer kibble. Refreshments are available for a small charge.

Santa's Village also gives you an opportunity to see many outstanding area performing arts groups on stage throughout the evening, plus groups of Christmas carolers strolling the grounds. Rediscover the joy of the holidays and take time out to visit this wonderful treasure in our midst. For more information, visit the Santa's Village website.
Baker's Dozen Tips for Year-End Planning

We're the first to admit that no one likes to tackle extra chores this time of year. We hope this handy checklist will help you get organized for year-end so that by mid-December, you can put your feet up and relax!
  1. Have you met your 2010 savings goal? This year is particularly challenging, but it's more important than ever to be disciplined about achieving your investment objectives.
  2. Set a realistic Christmas budget going into the season. Although everyone wants to be generous with loved ones this time of year, in this tough economy it's downright fashionable to be more cautious with holiday spending.
  3. Have you funded your IRA? If you have not yet sat down with us to discuss ROTH vs. conventional IRAs, please call now to beat the ROTH IRA conversion deadline of December 31. Although the issues are complex, it may be advantageous to switch to a ROTH if you are currently in a high marginal tax bracket. Speak to a qualified advisor before deciding.
  4. If you are aged 70 1/2 or more, have you taken your required minimum IRA distribution (RMD)? For 2010, the IRS will charges steep excise taxes if you neglect to take out your minimum. Don't forget, RMDs can be used to fund year-end charitable deductions.
  5. Are you or a loved one at or near age 65? From now through December 31 is the Medicare Open Enrollment period. Because of the new healthcare reform bill that passed earlier this year, you have more choices than ever. Suzan Kuddes of United Healthcare Medicare Solutions says, "You should consider a no-cost Medicare Advantage plan. It covers you much like a supplement and has extras thrown in such as prescriptions, extra vision coverage, a hearing aid credit, even a gym membership. If this is  a fit, you can save the money you're spending on a Supplement and Part D plan.  Medicare pays United Healthcare  to administer this plan so they don't have to charge you anything extra. Who would you rather have helping you with a claims issue - United Healthcare or Medicare?" Questions? Contact Susan here.
  6. Do you have a Flexible Spending Account with your employer? If you don't spend up to the amount you have set aside tax-free, you'll forfeit the rest. Be sure you are on track to use all your flex dollars for eligible childcare and healthcare expenses.
  7. Have you had any major changes in tax-deductible expenses this year? Whether you are self-employed or bring home a paycheck, now is the time to evaluate whether you've put enough aside for taxes to avoid a major surprise on April 15. Sure, everyone likes to get a tax refund, but it's bad financial planning to give a free loan to Uncle Sam. If you added a child, taken on a larger mortgage, or made a major gift to charity, you may need to adjust your exemptions on your paycheck to get better cash flow now. In the same way, if one of your children has flown the nest, or you've downsized homes or paid off a mortgage, you may need to have more taken out of your pay or face penalties next year. Talk to your CPA to see if you need to make a change.
  8. Bush Tax Cuts are expected to expire on December 31 and most experts predict the top marginal tax bracket will return to pre-2001 levels. If you are at or near the top tax bracket, you may want to push major charitable contributions into 2011. Talk to your CPA before you make any big decisions. Keep that in mind when reviewing the next two tips.
  9. Clean out those closets now and donate to charity. Be sure to get a receipt! You can no longer get away with a lump sum estimate for donating used clothing and household items. You'll need to itemize goods and quantities by a estimated market value. The Salvation Army provides this handy guide to determine value. The government has clamped down on these deductions, so keep good records. Tina advises to take photos to document your donations as well. The IRS even stipulates that to qualify for a deduction, the items need to be in good or like-new condition, so don't use it as an opportunity to unload your junk on the deserving poor. To see the current rules, visit here.
  10. Sit down with your spouse or partner and determine your budget and priorities for charitable giving for the remainder of the year. Keep in mind that you'll save capital gains tax if you gift appreciated stock instead of cash. Call us if you need guidance.
  11. In light of predicted tax rate hikes, 2011 might be a good year to "double down" and push major tax deductions and expenses into next year. For example, you can pay both 2010 and 2011 property taxes in 2011, which might give you some tax savings overall. Do not make any major financial decisions solely on the basis of saving taxes and always speak to your CPA to assist you with these and other tax planning issues.
  12. Do you own stock options? If you are thinking about exercising your ISOs or NQSOs before the end of the year, you should ask your CPA to analyze the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) implications.
  13. Do you own highly appreciated stock? Capital gains taxes are going up next year. Consider gifting stock to children or relatives in a lower tax bracket--they'll have to hold the stock at least a year before selling. Or, give them to charity and avoid cap gains altogether. We'll be looking at your portfolios to do some harvesting of gains and losses to maximize tax advantages going into 2011. Call us for more information!

Don't Miss Out on the Joy of the Season

One thing we look forward to every year is to take time out on a cold winter evening to drive and see distinctive holiday light displays. Pack friends or family in the car and head out to one or more of these awe-inspiring holiday treats.

In the Dallas area, nothing beats the lights of Highland Park and we love to end the evening with a romantic carriage ride offered at Highland Park Village. ThreeJays Carriages, voted Best in DFW, has several different packages, and tend to book up early for their season from November 27-January 2. To reserve or for more information, visit www.threejayscarriages.com.

Hands down, the best holiday lights experience is the Holiday Trail of Lights in east Texas. The festival started in Jefferson, but a good thing turned amazing when it banded together with Marshall, Jefferson, Kilgore, Natchitoches, and Shreveport/Bossier City to present an unforgettable holiday experience. Jefferson is definitely the best place to start, with its enchanted forest, life-size gingerbread house, candlelight tour of homes and more - not to mention plenty of lights! For more information, visit www.holidaytrailoflights.com.

Closeby Cleburne presents Whistle Stop Christmas which wows visitors on an annual basis. Hulen Park is festooned with over 11 acres of lights; they also offer train rides, fire truck rides, hayrides as well as entertainment.

Not to be outdone, College Station's Santa's Wonderland decks out with 2.5 million lights spread over 40 acres.

The Hill Country is pretty any time of year, but at Christmas they go all out to provide a festive and memorable holiday experience. Several cities have banded together to provide a unique holiday light driving experience: Boerne, Burnet, Dripping Springs, Fredericksburg, Goldwaite, Johnson City, Llano, Marble Falls, New Braunfels, Round Mountain and Wimberley are all part of the Hill Country Regional Lighting Trail.

From all of us at Tannery & Company Wealth Management, we wish you a joy-filled holiday season. We hope you can set some time apart from all the hustle and bustle of crammed holiday event schedules, shopping, packing and traveling to enjoy the wonder and beauty of our Texas Christmas season.

As a valued client or friend of Tannery & Company Wealth Management, thank you for spending time with us today. If you have any financial issues or concerns, pick up the phone and give us a call. We are always happy to hear from you and welcome your referrals.

Michael's Mission
Do you hear the bell?
My all-time favorite Christmas book is Chris Van Allsburg's classic Polar Express. It talks about keeping the mystery and magic of Christmas alive in your heart. My holiday wish for all of you is that you do everything you can to keep those bells ringing this time of year. I get a bit goofy over Christmas, and love everything about it--good friends and family, overloading on traditional and new food, relaxing in front of the fire with a good bottle of wine, gift shopping, parties--all of it! Nothing delights me more than to see the Christmas lights go up next door on the house that reminds me of Clark Griswold's in Christmas Vacation.

Take time to listen, wonder, and share the beauty of this holiday season with those you love. I leave you with the final lines from Polar Express. And yes, I still believe!

At one time, most of my friends could hear the bell. But as years passed, it fell silent for all of them. Even Sarah found, one Christmas, that she could no longer hear it's sweet sound. Though I have grown old, the bell still rings for me. As it does for all who truly believe.
Chris Van Allsburg

Here are my personal favorites. If I missed one of yours, shoot me an e-mail at tina@tannerywealth.com and I'll add it to my collection!
