The Amber Lyon story is just the latest in a series of articles that expose the total Joseph Goebbels like censorship rampant in mainstream media today. The first one I posted several weeks ago exposed how the NY Times basically just regurgitates whatever government officials tell them, while the other showcased how an NPR reporter covering D.C. had to leave and do her own thing out of frustration. This is precisely why alternative media sites are taking off. They provide the only outlets left for genuine journalism.

 

So back to Amber. Back in March 2011, CNN sent a four person team to Bahrain to cover the Arab Spring. Once there, the crew was the subject of extreme intimidation amongst other things, but they were able to record some fantastic footage. As Glenn Greenwald of the UK's Guardian writes in his blockbuster article from today:

 

"In the segment, Lyon interviewed activists as they explicitly described their torture at the hands of government forces, while family members recounted their relatives' abrupt disappearances. She spoke with government officials justifying the imprisonment of activists. And the segment featured harrowing video footage of regime forces shooting unarmed demonstrators, along with the mass arrests of peaceful protesters. In sum, the early 2011 CNN segment on Bahrain presented one of the starkest reports to date of the brutal repression embraced by the US-backed regime.

 

Despite these accolades, and despite the dangers their own journalists and their sources endured to produce it, CNN International (CNNi) never broadcast the documentary. Even in the face of numerous inquiries and complaints from their own employees inside CNN, it continued to refuse to broadcast the program or even provide any explanation for the decision. To date, this documentary has never aired on CNNi.

 

Having just returned from Bahrain, Lyon says she "saw first-hand that these regime claims were lies, and I couldn't believe CNN was making me put what I knew to be government lies into my reporting."

Hundreds of merchants join in a rally outside a bazaar in Tehran to decry rising prices and the plunging value of Iran's currency, the rial. 


TEHRAN - Iranian police and demonstrators clashed Wednesday during street protests linked to rising prices and the plunging value of the national currency.

Police in black riot gear fired tear gas and moved to disperse the protesters after they had rallied outside the capital's central bazaar and then marched toward the parliament building. Many businesses and shops were shuttered, which in effect led to the shutdown of the huge marketplace.

 

"Our checks bounced, our businesses are ruined," said a merchant who gave his name as Ali. "How shall we earn a living?"

 

About 500 owners of apparel shops and other businesses joined in the march, expressing outrage over their inability to stay afloat with the national currency, the rial, appearing to lose more value every day.

 

"I don't dare to sell" anything, said Hassan, 48, a cloth salesman who, like others, declined to give his full name, fearing retaliation. "I am scared I won't be able to replenish my shelves."

 

The protests were unusual in this tightly controlled society and seemed to be a spontaneous reaction to outrage over rising prices and the government's inability to halt the currency slide.

 

Worried Iranians have been buying up dollars and other foreign currencies, further devaluing the rial.

 

The merchants' decision to take to the streets appeared significant because the business class is often viewed as a proponent of the status quo. Merchants from the main bazaar were regarded as major supporters of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The complaints voiced Wednesday were not about Iran's lack of democracy but rather about what many viewed as the inept economic policies of the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, whose second term ends next year. By law he cannot run again.

When I was first informed of iGive, I was skeptical. I've seen these ideas come and go. Often, they're too good to be true. Or there are all kinds of glitches and problems.

So I spent hours researching.

I looked at online customer reviews (which were very good). I read all of iGive's fine print, such as Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. I signed up and even emailed two tech support questions to see how good their tech support was.

And the more I dug, the more I liked what I saw. For instance, both of my tech support questions were responded to within 60 minutes. How often does THAT happen?

  As you know from our Patriot Partner program, we're all about encouraging a lot of people to each do a little-to do something. When everyone does a little, together we accomplish a lot.

So consider what could happen.

A new app called "In Obama's own words" is great.  Right now it is only for the iPhone.  If you are wanting for someone to hear something Obama said that really is awful for our country, and he has said a lot, this app is what you need on your iPhone.  It is only $.99.  It is well worth it.  It is him talking and saying these things that other people can hear when you press the play button.  Pass this information on.  The guy who made this is had so many requests to make it for other popular cell phones now.  He is just a great patriot who is a great computer nerd and did this after hundreds of hours of work on it.

As you know too well, unless our friends who fear God, respect our constitution and love freedom unite now and vote in this upcoming election, we will lose the America we have known. Yet remarkably, 15-30% of self-identified Christians are not even registered to vote. If even a small percentage of those joined the fight, it could make the difference in the 2012 election. Making this happen is my highest priority, and once again I need your help.

 

At the Pennsylvania Pastors' Network (PPN), we have been working very aggressively with pastors across the commonwealth. We're calling on them to stand boldly at the pulpit, preach the truth, and teach the Scripture as it addresses the intersection of policy and Christian culture. At the same time, I'm encouraging them to urge their members to register to vote, and to vote biblically and constitutionally on Election Day. PPN has just embarked on a mass Christian voter registration effort, called  "From Pews to Polls -An Initiative to Protect Religious Freedom in America." We want to reach into every church in Pennsylvania and enlist thousands of new voters. This is where you can help in an easy, but very big way.

 

First, I need your help to identify churches and pastors. If they believe in the authority of Scripture and that our rights come from God not government, we want to work with them. If you are able to make one or more recommendations of this sort, please click here to be taken directly to our website. Once there, simply supply the requested information, and if you include his or her phone number, we will personally call that pastoror church leader.

 

If you'd prefer to send information to a church or pastor, please feel free to forward the letter you'll find at the bottom of this email. I sent this letter last week to roughly 2000 pastors across Pennsylvania, but there are thousands and thousands more who need to know about this. As you help us find them, you help restore our foundation. We'll be able to discreetly and confidentially determine which members of each congregation are registered to vote. This information will be sent directly to the Pastoror another church member and we will assist them in the enlistment of his congregation in reclaiming a Christian founded America. As Americans, we have enjoyed the fruits of civic and religious freedom, prosperity, and abundance as promised by God to all nations that fear Him.  Our Founding Fathers and clergymen cleaved to the knowledge that "blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD," and so they carefully framed our Constitutional Republic firmly atop a devout Biblical Foundation. It was a Republic secured by faith, morality and reverence. But that once secure Republic now sits vulnerable, attacked on all sides by doubt, debauchery and irreverence. So great is the threat that we are now confronted by the reality of Psalm 11:3: "If the foundations 'are being' destroyed, what shall the righteous do?"

 
I have never before seen an assault so aggressive against our foundation, and the question truly has become, "
what can the righteous do?" The answer is simple. The easiest thing we can do is vote! Our vote is our greatest weapon yet shockingly, vast numbers of Christians (30% in some cases) are not even registered to vote. We must turn this around if we want to maintain our freedom. It was Christians who built this great nation, and now we must stand up and save it.
 

For this reason, PPN has embarked on an extensive effort we're calling, "From Pews to Polls - An Initiative to Protect Religious Freedom in America." In addition to calling for dedicated personal and corporate prayer for our nation, we have initiated an effort to assist pastors and grassroots leaders in the facilitation of voter registration. We must enable Christian soldiers who understand that our freedoms come from God and that being the 'salt and the light' is most easily lived out by voting for candidates who are likely to share Biblical values. Voter registration for November 2012 must be completed by October 9th. The deadline is fast approaching. We must quickly move forward.  

 

 

The next step will be up to you. We want to make it as easy as possible so we've done all the preparation and have absorbed all the cost in order to provide you the following:

  • Online Voter Registration Drive Kit - This kit has everything you need to plan and implement a voter registration drive in your church.  September is the month to do this, as the deadline to register is the first week of October in most states. (Church organized voter registration efforts are completely legal and appropriate.)
  • Registered Voter Look-Up Service - We will confidentially identify those in your church membership who are not registered to vote and return that information to you.
  • Follow-Up Email - We will send or provide a template for a personal email from you or me asking unregistered members to register online or to register at a church registration drive during the month of September.
  • Early Voting Information - We will provide information and assistance in helping members of your congregation to vote by Absentee Ballot if they cannot be physically present on Election Day in November.

The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet, The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.

 

The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.

 

Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.

 

Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.

 

The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.

 

The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

Why Senior Citizens Should Prefer Ryan's Medicare Plan To Obama's

 

DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz described the Medicare reforms proposed by GOP Vice-Presidential nominee and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) as "literally a death trap for seniors." White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that Ryan's reforms would "change Medicare as we know it."

 

But it was Obamacare that already changed Medicare as we know it, transforming it literally into a death trap for seniors. Obamacare cut Medicare by $716 billion over the next 10 years alone, mostly by slashing Medicare payments to doctors and hospitals. And that is just a down-payment on what is to come.

Dear Friends,

 

Tonight, Governor Mitt Romney defied his critics on both the left and the right. 

 

Since (at least) January, when our PAC became the first Tea Party in the nation to endorse Mitt Romney, he has been vilified as a wealthy, out of touch, unlikable cad who could care less about the problems of average Americans.

 

The Obama campaign has spent millions cultivating that negative image and the media has abetted in fostering it. 

 

That image, however, was shattered during the debate, this evening, as Governor Romney connected not only with viewers at home, but with the (disappointed) media elites who had to admit the painfully obvious fact--Romney outperformed a sad and fledgling President.

 

The performance was reminiscent of Ronald Reagan's 1980 breakthrough 

debate with Jimmy Carter.  In that year, the Carter campaign, with help from the media, spent the entire summer depicting Reagan as a stupid, out of touch, and over the hill war monger.

 

But when Americans were able to see the two pols side by side, and discover the truth for themselves, Reagan emerged as the more presidential candidate--just as Romney has done tonight.

 

Praise the Lord!

 

Turning our attention to Voter ID, we were informed by Governor Corbett's Press Secretary, Kevin  Harley, that the Governor's Office is still considering an appeal to the PA Supreme Court.

 

As the Governor had all but ruled out an appeal--one has to conclude that your phone calls are having an impact. 

 

We have it on excellent authority that the Governor's office has been inundated with calls--thanks to  you, the Pittsburgh Tea Party Movement,the Delaware County Patriots, the Tea Party Patriots of Lower Bucks, and all the other groups whose members made calls.

  

By the way, the ACLU is not stopping at an injunction.  An ACLU lawyer told Dom Giordano, during this morning's WPHT 1210 broadcast, that they will now

challenge the Constitutionality of the law--despite Judge Robert Simpson's ruling that the law is Constitutional.

 

For the record, our group has supported the voter ID law since December, 2009, when we raised the issue with State Representative Steven Barrar at a Christmas Party. Rep. Barrar had been co-sponsoring a voter ID bill for five years.

 

It is very difficult for us to watch the law be dismantled without a fight (appeal). By giving up so easily, we concede far too much to the opposition.

Friends, first a bit of house keeping.  As we do each year, we won't be sending out the Morning Briefing on Columbus Day.  Second, you'll note the excessive length of the first post.  I've been trying to be diligent to give you the meat, but encourage click throughs to the site.  This one though, I feel very strongly, you need it here in its entirety.  I think it is a major point missed in the conversations about Barack Obama's debate performance.  I hope you agree. 1. On Eye Contact and God-Kings

On Wednesday night, Mitt Romney was respectful of Barack Obama when Barack Obama challenged him. Mitt Romney looked Barack Obama in the eye when Barack Obama challenged Romney. He kept a smiling demeanor to his challenge in the room.

 

Wednesday night, Mitt Romney was the challenge in the room for Barack Obama and Barack Obama would not look at him. Barack Obama kept his head down, eyes fixed on his podium. This is a metaphor for the entirety of Barack Obama's Presidency.

 

Mr. Obama does not make eye contact with the challenges he faces. He looks down or away.

 

He came into the White House to dire fiscal times. No one denies it. But Barack Obama declared a recovery in June of 2009. Instead of looking the challenge in the eyes and staring it down, Barack Obama declared it no longer a problem and pivoted to healthcare. Even as the fiscal storm raged, Barack Obama said it turned out to be worse than he and his advisors expected, but he wouldn't make eye contact with the problem. He set about destroying our healthcare system instead in the name of reform.

 

In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon exploded off shore. It took the President almost two months to look the challenge in the eyes, address the nation, and tell us what he was going to do. In the meantime, his administration overreacted doing untold harm to the Gulf Coast economy. Still, the President refused to meet the challenge of our economic situation, pivoting from health care to Solyndra.

 

Now, we have another challenge. The Middle East is in chaos and our Ambassador is dead. The Presidential campaign went from "Osama is dead and Al Qaeda is on the run" to "Al Qaeda is alive and our Ambassador assassinated." But the President refused to face this challenge too. Instead, he blamed a YouTube video. We now know the President and his administration knew of the security risk. We now know the President and his administration were pretty sure, within twenty-four hours of September 11th, that we had yet again been attacked by terrorists on September 11th.

 

But the President refused to look us or the problem in the eyes. As his Press Secretary, Secretary of State, and Defense chiefs were beginning to acknowledge it was a terrorist attack, Barack Obama still refused to make eye contact with the problem. He refused to even acknowledge it existed, hiding still behind a YouTube video.

 

I have reservations about Mitt Romney. I'm a conservative. Of course I do. They are well known. But make no mistake about it - Mitt Romney will make eye contact with the challenges of the day instead of looking away at a podium, a desk, or a distraction. I may not always agree with him, but at least I know I can trust him to make eye contact with the challenges of our day and set about solving them, not looking for easy distractions and fleeting glories.

 

Barack Obama won't make eye contact with the challenges of the day and he won't accept responsibility for having to deal with them. Nothing is his fault. Nothing is his blame. Only credit flows to Barack Obama. Now more people are out of the job market than any time since the Carter recession, our Ambassador to Libya is dead, and the black flag of Al Qaeda rises from our own flag poles at our own Embassies in the Middle East.

 

For five years the left has told us Barack Obama came off Mount Olympus to be our God-King. Now they say the elevation in Denver, lower than that of Olympus, was too high for him. The god-king of the Cult of Personality bleeds. Pay no attention to any of it. Make no eye contact with reality - not to him being merely a flawed man in over his head, not to our dead Ambassador, not to the unemployed, not to Al Qaeda's black flag.

 

No, the god-King commands we pay attention to Big Bird and birth control - issues that, unlike Christopher Stevens and millions of unemployed, truly matter when staring down at the podium instead of making eye contact with the future.  

 

 

 

 

2. Joe Biden Continues to Campaign for Romney/Ryan

A couple of days ago I posted on Joe Biden's unorthodox decision to slam the record of the Obama regime as a way of trying to inveigle voters into agreeing to four more years of the same.

There's no denying that Mitt Romney took Barack Obama behind the woodshed last night and applied a good old beat down. Last night will mean nothing if conservatives don't volunteer and compete with the Left's ground game.

GOP: US Consulate received repeated threats, had requested more security

Two House Republicans say they have been informed by whistleblowers that the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was attacked and threatened 13 times before the incident last month that killed four Americans.

 

Reps. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) sent Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a letter on Tuesday that detailed the whistleblowers' allegations.

"Based on information provided to the Committee by individuals with direct knowledge of events in Libya, the attack that claimed the ambassador's life was the latest in a long line of attacks on Western diplomats and officials in Libya in the months leading up to September 11, 2012," Issa and Chaffetz wrote. "It was clearly never, as Administration officials once insisted, the result of a popular protest."

The congressmen said the consulate asked for more security to deal with the growing threat but was turned down by the administration.

An Act further to amend the Pakistan Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898
(Gazette of Pakistan, Extraordinary, part 1, 12th October 1986)

The following Act of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) received the assent of the President on the 5th October, 1986 and is hereby published for general information:

Whereas it is expedient further to amend the Pakistan Penal Code (Act XLV of 1860) and the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898 (Act V of 1893), for the purposes hereinafter appearing:

It is hereby enacted as follows:

1.

Short title and commencement

(1)

This Act may be called the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 1986.

(2)

It shall come into force at once.

2.

Insertion of new section 295-C, Act XLV of 1860. In the Pakistan Penal Code (Act XLV of 1860), after section 295-B, the following new section shall be inserted, namely:

295-C.

Use of derogatory remarks, etc. in respect of the Holy Prophet. Whoever by words, either spoken or written, or by visible representation, or by any imputation, innuendo, or insinuation, directly or indirectly, defiles the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) shall be punished with death, or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable to fine."

Romney Wins Round One

Governor Mitt Romney emerged from the first presidential debate as the clear winner. There were a lot of good moments in last night's debate, but the best part was watching the heads of liberal commentators explode. The poster boy of this phenomenon was "MSDNC's" Chris Matthews.

You may recall that Barack Obama once gave Chris Matthews a "thrill up my leg." Matthews also confessed that it was his job to make sure Obama succeeded. Last night the thrill retreated down his leg as Matthews gave "O's" performance a 0. You can watch his on-air meltdown here. Andrew Sullivan of the left-wing Daily Beast wrote, "This was a disaster" for Obama.

After a good night's rest, I was curious to see how the liberal media would spin the debate this morning. There was no change. Every liberal commentator on TV this morning was dumbfounded. Before last night they thought the election was over. Clearly it is not. They thought the cool Obama would easily beat the stiff Romney. He did not.

The most difficult aspect of last night's debate to explain is the body language. Obama constantly refused to look at Mitt Romney, and instead spent much of the time looking at his notes. One commentator asked, "What was he doing? Preparing for the next debate?" A columnist for the Washington Times put it well when he wrote:

"Bewildered and lost without his teleprompter, President Obama flailed all around the debate stage last night. He was stuttering, nervous and petulant. It was like he had been called in front of the principal after goofing around for four years and blowing off all his homework."


Romney, in contrast, was confident, prepared, in command of his facts, and he made several points each time he was given those precious few moments to speak to the American people. He wasted no opportunities to make his case that Obama has failed and that we can do better.

On the substance, there were several good exchanges with Governor Romney coming out on top in virtually every one. Here are a few examples:

  • Despite the weak economy and high energy prices, Obama couldn't stop himself from attacking American industry. He specifically went after $4 billion in tax deductions claimed by the oil industry. Romney pounced:

"First of all, the Department of Energy has said the tax break for oil companies is $2.8 billion a year. And it's actually an accounting treatment, as you know, that's been in place for a hundred years. ... And in one year, you provided $90 billion in breaks to the green-energy world. ... that's about 50 years' worth of what oil and gas receives. ... 50 years' worth of breaks -- into solar and wind -- to Solyndra and Fisker and Tesla and Ener1. I had a friend who said you don't just pick the winners and losers, you pick the losers. So this is not the kind of policy you want to have if you want to get America energy secure."

 

  • Obama also trotted out another of left's tired old lies when he said he wanted to end tax breaks for companies shipping jobs overseas. Romney replied: "Look, I've been in business for 25 years. I have no idea what you're talking about. I maybe need to get a new accountant. But the idea that you get a break for shipping jobs overseas is simply not the case." Watch it here.
  • When it came to job creation, Obama's big idea was to hire 100,000 teachers. The federal government does not hire teachers! Local school districts do that -- when and if their budgets (the taxpayers) can afford it. In contrast, Governor Romney emphasized his energy plan, which would allow private industries to create millions of new jobs.
  • Toward the end of the debate, the subject shifted to the role of government, and Governor Romney hit a home run. He said, "The role of government is to promote and protect the principles" found in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. He continued:

"In that line that says, 'We are endowed by our Creator with our rights,' I believe we must maintain our commitment to religious tolerance and freedom in this country. That statement also says that we are endowed by our Creator with the right to pursue happiness as we choose. ...

"We're a nation that believes that we are all children of the same God... And we look for discovery and innovation, all these things desired out of the American heart to provide the pursuit of happiness for our citizens. But we also believe in maintaining for individuals the right to pursue their dreams and not to have the government substitute itself for the rights of free individuals." Watch their exchange here.


Going into last night's debate, the polls overwhelmingly predicted Obama would win. One national media poll released Monday found that 55% of likely voters believed Barack Obama would win the debate, compared to just 31% predicting Governor Romney would win. CNN did a snap poll of 430 adults who watched the debate and by a margin of 67% to 25%, they said Governor Romney had won. CBS polled 500 undecided voters after the debate and by a more than 2-to-1 margin, (46% to 22%) they also declared Mitt Romney the winner.

Countering Obama's Blame-Shifting Baloney

The first of the 2012 Presidential Debates is over. More than 60 million viewers watched as the undisputed champion of this round, Mitt Romney, towered like the brilliant, unyielding professor over a petulant, adolescent "community organizer."

The event pitted the socialist rhetoric of Barack Hussein Obama against Romney's articulate free-market advocacy.

The focus of the debate was domestic policy -- the economy, health care and the role of government. Chief among these topics was the economy, according to the conventional political wisdom that Americans vote first for their economic future and for the candidate who they believe will provide the greatest sense of individual economic security and prosperity.

The caveat here is the qualifier "who they believe," and that perception will be shaped by competing visions built on both truth and leftist deception. The vision that prevails will be determined by the ability of voters to distinguish the difference. Unfortunately, the election of Obama in 2008 provided ample evidence that the American electorate's ability has diminished in recent years, primarily because the spirit of Liberty has been eroded by decades of classist propaganda promulgated by the the Left.

Obama's re-election prospects depend entirely on his ability to deceive a majority of Americans with the same old blame-shifting blather that he used to dupe them in 2008: "It's Bush's fault." Obama can't effectively focus his campaign on the textbook pillars of socialist propaganda, race and economic disparity, if he has to spend airtime defending his ruinous economic policies.

Heritage Experts React to First Presidential Debate

During last night's debate between President Obama and former Governor Mitt Romney, Heritage's domestic policy experts were live-blogging their analysis of the ideas discussed. Below are some of the highlights of our experts' reactions to the major points made.

Competing Tax Plans

Most of the time on taxes was spent on Romney's tax plan. Romney's plan, like most tax reform plans, would lower tax rates and make other changes to the tax code to encourage growth. The economy will not recover fully until we have tax reform.

Obama repeated the falsehood that Romney's plan would raise taxes on the middle class. This incorrect assertion was spread by a biased report from the Tax Policy Center. Romney's plan can make pro-growth changes to the tax code and doesn't have to raise taxes on the middle class.

Some time was also spent on Obama's plan to raise the top marginal tax rate over 40 percent. It is important to keep in mind that raising the top rate would fall heavily on job creators and hurt job creation.

Obama falsely claimed businesses can take a deduction for moving jobs overseas. No such deduction exists.

Education Spending as a Broad Answer on Jobs and Other Issues

Further increasing federal education spending will fail to improve academic outcomes. Policymakers need to trim federal spending-not increase it-and empower state education leaders with control over their share of education funding. And there is plenty of room to cut spending.

Since the 1970s, federal per-pupil expenditures have more than doubled (after adjusting for inflation). Those increases haven't all gone to the classroom or toward teacher salaries. Much of that money has gone toward expanding bureaucracy and non-teaching administrative positions in our nation's public schools.

A better prescription for improving educational outcomes is empowering states with control of education dollars and decision-making, giving them the ability to craft policies that allow parents to direct their children's education. Here's Heritage's plan for how to do just that.

The Contrast on Medicare

Obama has already made significant changes to Medicare through his health care reform law. He depends on failed government price controls to cut Medicare by more than $716 billion over the next 10 years, not to help shore up Medicare for future generations, but instead to help pay for Obamacare. Moreover, he depends on a board of 15 unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats to enforce more cuts. [To read more, see Obamacare Ends Medicare As We Know It]

Similar to the Heritage plan, Romney's plan restructures the Medicare program for future generations. His proposal, called premium support, would provide a government contribution toward the cost of a private plan or traditional Medicare. It also guarantees that seniors would have access to plans that cover the government contribution while ensuring plans meet the same level of Medicare benefits.

Premium support is not a "voucher" any more than is current law. It just says government will pick up a big part of the tab for your health insurance, and if you want to spend more, then you pay the difference. There's nothing exceptional about this. It is exactly what happens today under Medicare Advantage.

Obamacare Raises Taxes on the Poor and Middle Class

Obama proclaimed that he reduced taxes for the middle class. What he failed to mention is that he also increased taxes on the middle class. Let's not forget that the President's health care law will raise taxes on the middle class and the poor in four years as reported by the Congressional Budget Office. For instance, a family of four making about $24,600 per year, the projected federal poverty level in 2016, could be subject to Obamacare's controversial individual mandate tax. This is only one of the 18 taxes and penalties imposed by Obamacare, some of which will hit Americans as early as January 2013.

The Role of Government and the Ladder of Opportunity

When asked about the role of the government, Obama brought up his favorite metaphor, "the ladder of opportunity." And as usual, he incorrectly suggested that it's government spending that creates these ladders of opportunity.

In reality, while government has an important role to play in upholding the rule of law, ensuring access to education, and providing a safety net, it cannot compete with the free market when it comes to creating opportunities. That's why economic freedom-and not government spending-is one of the pillars of our American Dream.

Given the President's statist and egalitarian impulses, perhaps the "escalator of results" might be a more fitting analogy next time: Everybody just hops on and we all get to the same place with little effort on our behalf.

What We Didn't Hear Last Night

What wasn't said at tonight's debate spoke volumes. In an hour and a half focused largely on the economy, not a single mention was made about the importance that marriage plays in combating poverty. Not a single mention of how federal welfare programs can function as poverty traps, especially as the Obama Administration has gutted the work requirements that made welfare reform a success. As the debate turned to focus explicitly on health care reform and the role of government more generally, not a single mention of how the federal government under Obamacare, rather than protecting religious liberty, is actively coercing citizens to violate their consciences. The nuts and bolts of taxation, regulation, Medicare, Social Security, and other domestic policies are important, but so too are the ways that these and other government actions shape culture and interact with civil society. At the end of the day, culture and the institutions of civil society are what make America great. Our government shouldn't be weakening them.

A Debate in the Land of the Deaf

The debate, like the electoral college, is an outmoded institution dating back to another time when candidates for political office were capable of expressing ideas that could not be compressed into a misleading five word slogan.

 
The modern political debate is not a test of ideas, but of candidates. HD cameras and screens make it possible for us to see every wince and grimace, and to measure how slowly a candidate responds. The debate is not won by intelligence, but by a combination of populist empathy and low zingers. Those zingers are usually all we remember from past debates because the age of the public and politician that could participate in the marathon Lincoln Douglas debates is long over and everyone knows it.

The debates are rarely about a public interested in weighing and measuring ideas, but a reality show where the candidate who has one bad moment becomes fodder for the late night jokes of the next day. And if the candidates and the public are sub-par, the moderators are even worse appearing only to promote one candidate and one agenda.

 I have been in the aviation maintenance industry since 1965. I have been repairing and overhauling airline passenger seats since 1994. They are all locked into the floor seat track in the same way.

 

We recently were told on the news that American Airlines had six airliners where passenger seats were loose in the floor seat tracks. We were told that the safety issue was caused by "mechanic negligence" in not installing the required locking "clamps" so the seats would not move forward or backward in the seat tracks. These seats were NOT accidentally "loose" - they were left loose on purpose!

 

American Airlines is in bankruptcy. Further, as a result of the bankruptcy, the company is in the process of renegotiating UNION contracts, especially with their mechanics. UNION airline mechanics have a history of sabotaging airline aircraft during contract negotiations to put pressure on management to accede to the UNION demands. In fact, when United's mechanics were on strike many years ago United had to hire ARMED GUARDS to guard parked airliners at Los Angeles to prevent threatened mechanic sabotage!

 

While seats installed in airline aircraft have differences in construction, they are all locked into the seat track the same way!  Here is an example:

 

 

FROM THE AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MANUAL:

 

(4) Ensure the front leg locking plunger and rear antirattle nut are fully retracted.

(5) Position seat leg attachment studs in seat track openings ensuring that seat assembly is positioned

squarely across track axis.

(6) Slide seat forward or aft to align inboard front locking plunger with marker strip attached to floor

track while keeping seat assembly straight over tracks.

(7) Using phillips screwdriver or 3/8-inch wrench tighten plunger until seated securely in track.

(8) Tighten antirattle nut on rear leg stud.

 

If you refer to the diagram below directly from the aircraft maintenance manual you can see the seat track with the round openings for the hold-down studs, and the locking fitting on the rear leg. The Maintenance Manual procedure for installing and locking the seats is very clear. Further, airlines utilize JOB CARDS for the procedure, which includes signature blocks for both the installing mechanic AND the accepting inspector, both UNION!

 

The news reports that the "loose" seats was merely "mechanic negligence" is CRAP! It happened on SIX different aircraft, and NOT by the same mechanic!

BOTTOM LINE: DON'T FLY ON AMERICAN AIRLINES, OR ANY OTHER AIRLINE, WHILE THEY ARE IN BANKRUPTCY!!!

 

Suggestion:  NEVER book on a bankrupt airline!  If you can, fly SOUTHWEST!  They have been profitable since day-one, and I know for a personal fact they do the maintenance! 


Always remember, the airline industry is liability-driven!  Would you book on an air carrier that had a crash once a month even if they had the lowest fare?  The FAA refuses to advertise which air carriers have the worst maintenance record!  Also, remember that US air carriers must compete with each other while most foreign carriers, such as Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, and the like are subsidized by their governments due to the tourist dollars they bring in!  Subsidized air carriers do the maintenance because cost is not a factor!  
If you really want to research which US air carriers are the least maintenance violated go to
and look for the violations! 
The first element that gets cut when airlines are in financial trouble is MAINTENANCE!  I represented a family as their expert witness involved in the Alaska Airlines disaster coming out of Puerta Vallarta years ago when the stabilizer jackscrew jammed due to maintenance FRAUD!  I have been overhauling these jackscrews for the military for nearly 20 years where the maintenance was done by the "book". These jackscrews were the ONLY ones flying with no inspection or maintenance problems. Alaska cheated on the maintenance so as not to ground the aircraft, and that caused the disaster, combined with morons in the cockpit who kept flying the broken aircraft to get it back into the US!  They passed up at least FIVE airports where they could have landed safely. Instead they killed more than 100 people! 


All airlines are NOT "equal" as the FAA would have you believe!

National Journal's 11 point skew barely holds back the truth: Romney is in command

The National Journal (NJ) has done its part to make believe Barack Obama is leading Mitt Romney. Without regard for current realities they nonetheless pressed on but could not muster more than a 47/47 tie between the two. N J used 2008 as its projected turnout model as if 2010 never happened and we have all been in a state of suspended animation since November 2008.  For liberals this is a comforting day dream but it has little connection to reality.     

As per Rasmussen, in 2010 Republicans held a slim 1.3 point Party registration edge (not Party Identification - but actual Party registration). That election brought a historic beating for Democrats at every level from the Senate down to state assemblies.   Rasmussen's current numbers show a 4.3 point registration edge for Republicans; more than THREE TIMES larger than their 2010 edge.

The number identifiers have changed but in the 2080 page monster that is Obamacare has a host of evil features in it. Here are some of the worst one:

Pg 30, Sec 123 : there will be a government committee that decides what treatments you are allowed and what your overall benefits are = DEATH PANEL.

Pg 29, lines 4-16 mandates the rationing of health care Canada style = DEATH PANEL.

Pg 42 a Health Choices Commissioner  will determine your health benefits. You will have no choice =DEATH PANEL.

PG 50, section 152 free, taxpayer-paid health care will be given to the 30 million non-citizens even illegal aliens.

Pg 59, lines 21-24 gives government direct access to your banks accounts to compel you to pay what they think you should pay without your previous consent.

Romney wins the first debate so decisively, even liberals can't deny it.

How decisively did Mitt Romney win Wednesday night's debate? All you had to do was watch the most pro-Obama network to see it. "I personally do not know who won this debate," MSNBC's Rachel Maddow said as soon as the debate ended. She was obviously the only one who didn't know.

When Maddow brought on her colleague Ed Schultz, he moaned that President Obama "created a problem for himself tonight on Social Security. He agreed with Mitt Romney.... I thought he was off his game." Nor did the president's performance send a thrill up the leg of Chris Matthews. "I don't know what he was doing out there," Matthews complained. "He had his head down. He was enduring the debate rather than fighting it."

If ever there were a night when conservatives wanted to watch MSNBC, this was it -- an all-you-can-eat buffet of schadenfreude, as one after another of the liberal network's personalities tried to come to grips with what was perhaps the most one-sided presidential debate since JFK beat a shifty-looking Richard Nixon in 1960.

Heritage Fix Health Care Policy

The $6,400 Question

You've likely heard that reforming Medicare would cost seniors $6,400 out of pocket. President Obama mentioned this claim last night during the first presidential debate at the University of Denver in Colorado (see full debate analysis here).  This charge is based on a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analysis relating to an outdated version of Ryan's budget proposal.

This figure is meaningless and misleading for two reasons. Not only has Ryan's proposal changed significantly since then, but the CBO has also admitted that its estimates would be limited-because it cannot account for the effects of competition on prices.

As Heritage's Rea Hederman reports, "CBO director Douglas Elmendorf has publicly acknowledged that his agency does not have the methodological tools to accurately model Medicare premium-support plans and the impact of market competition."

The most recent academic analysis indicates that introducing premium support into Medicare could save 9 percent in annual costs. In addition to reducing Medicare spending across the board, the more important effect would be the competition between plans-giving people options for their coverage plans and saving individuals money.

Any claim, in the media or elsewhere, that uses the CBO evaluation of the 2011 Ryan plan is fundamentally flawed and erroneous. Furthermore, CBO's estimates are fundamentally flawed because the agency is unable to model market competition, the driver of virtually every other sector of the American economy. Medicare premium support would save money, and competition would ensure even greater savings for beneficiaries.

Update regarding Florida Family Association's billboard targeting CAIR officials teaching students in Tampa public schools.

Florida Family Association developed a billboard campaign to counter CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations) officials who have been allowed to address students in Tampa public schools.  The history on this issue is posted below.

The billboard has been up for thirty days and will hopefully remain up for several more weeks. 

The media has totally ignored the billboard most likely because they don't want people to go to Welcometotampafl.org where they would learn about the Islamization taking place in the City of Tampa.  However, as stated below in the history of this issue, 104,000 people drive by the billboard every day including teachers and students who are going to and from Steinbrenner High School.

Florida Family Association developed the billboard campaign after the Hillsborough County School Board ignored the public outcry of thousands of citizens for months regarding CAIR Executive Director Hassan Shibly teaching hundreds of students during an all day event at Steinbrenner High School on November 29, 2011. 

November 29, 2011 was not the first time CAIR indoctrinated public school students regarding Sharia law and Islam.

The teacher wrote in her email invitation to CAIR Tampa "My name is Kelly Miliziano, and I am a World History teacher at Steinbrenner High School. Every year I invite a representative from CAIR to speak to our AP World History Students. For the past 2 years, Ramzy Kilic, spent the day at our school presenting to students, and answering questions....." Florida Family Association obtained this email in the public records request that provided the documentation needed to first break this story.

The school district claims they have no documents to provide regarding the prior years that Kelly Miliziano's email indicates CAIR officials addressed students.  Additionally, the school district claims there are no documents available for production regarding any other religious speakers at that school during the prior two plus years.

Kelly Miliziano's email listed the following topics that she wanted Hassan Shibly to address:

  • The mission of CAIR
  • Basic beliefs, practices, history of....
  • Confronting stereotypes and misconceptions (a favorite of students)
  • Sharia
  • Why does Islam look differently around the world?
  • Human Rights and Islam
  • Women and Islam in different countries
  • Any other topic you think students should know about.

It is difficult to comprehend that CAIR officials taught these topics to students without causing concern to Hillsborough County School District officials.

If Florida Family Association learns and verifies that a teacher has invited a CAIR official or other Muslim Brotherhood front organization official to address students on taxpayer funded property , then Florida Family Association will:   

  • Organize a peaceful, educationally based protest in front of the school.
  • Hand out educational fliers to parents dropping off their children for class.
  • Rent the school auditorium for a special event to educate the community regarding the truth about Islam being mostly a political movement with a religious flavor.

Six of seven Hillsborough County School Board Members made it clear during several meetings earlier this year that they will allow Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR Tampa) officials to inform students about their abridged version of Sharia law and Islamic "human rights."

The Florida Family Association billboard campaign will counter that propaganda. Regardless of whether another CAIR official addresses public school students again or not Florida Family Association's web site Welcometotampafl.org posted on the billboard will reach far more people with the unabridged facts regarding Islam and Sharia law.   One hundred four thousand (104,000) cars will see this billboard every weekday.

Florida Family Association sent out an email alert on August 21, 2012 which announced:  Florida Family Association hopes to raise $4,072 for a billboard aimed at the only school district in Florida and perhaps the nation that knowingly permits CAIR officials to instruct students about Islam and Sharia.  To read the full history click here

Clear Channel Outdoor, Inc. posted the billboard on the morning of September 5, 2012 on Dale Mabry Highway, .4 miles south of West Lutz Lake Fern Road.  This location was chosen because: 

  • Steinbrenner High School, where CAIR officials addressed students over 3 school years, is located approximately 4.5 miles west of Dale Mabry Highway at 5575 West Lutz Lake Fern Road, Lutz, FL.
  • There are no major billboards located on West Lutz Lake Fern Road between the school and Dale Mabry Highway.
  • Other reasons specified in the August 21, 2012 email posted below.

The Hillsborough County School Board in Tampa Florida appears to be the only school district in Florida and perhaps the nation which will knowingly allow Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR) officials to instruct students regarding Islam and Sharia law. Tragically, board members have no problem with CAIR officials giving their biased version of "Sharia", "Human Rights and Islam" and "Women and Islam in different countries" to hundreds of students at Steinbrenner High School funded by taxpayer dollars.  A condensed history of this issue is posted at the end of this article.

Florida Family Association, whose public records request provided the credibility to first break the story, billboard campaign will:

  • Be seen by 104,000 vehicles daily according to DOT traffic counts.
  • Be hard to miss since it is the only major billboard for miles.
  • Be located on the primary route to Steinbrenner High School.
  • Significantly increase the likelihood that Florida Family Association will learn if and when teachers invite CAIR officials to address students.
  • Educate thousands of people who visit WelcometoTampaFL.org regarding this issue, the Sharia threat to America public policy and the Islamization taking place in Tampa.
  • Hopefully significantly decrease the likelihood of pro-Sharia groups having access to students.

If Florida Family Association learns and verifies that a teacher has invited a CAIR official or other Muslim Brotherhood front organization official to address students on taxpayer funded property Florida Family Association will:

  • Organize a peaceful, educationally based protest in front of the school.
  • Hand out educational fliers to parents dropping off their children for class.
  • Rent the school auditorium for a special event to educate the community regarding the truth about Islam being mostly a political movement with a religious flavor.

Thanks to the generosity of many supporters approximately $6,820 has been donated toward the cost of the billboard campaign which includes $4,072 for the billboard and $3,000 for the reward.  Click here to see contract with Clear Channel Outdoor, Inc.  

CAIR is using bullying tactics across the United States to intimidate patriotic minded people out of their First Amendment right to oppose Islamization of America.  We need to counter that intimidation.

Florida Family Association is planning more campaigns like this one.  If the reward is not collected we will post rewards for other situations regarding Islamization in America.

ISSUE HISTORY

The Tampa Bay Times reported on January 10, 2012 "Florida Family Association's David Caton protests Muslim speaker's visits to Hillsborough school." 

Florida Family Association's public records request which the school district complied with on December 14, 2011 (the beginning of Christmas break) produced the proof that CAIR officials made presentations to students at Steinbrenner High School in Tampa.

Since that time Florida Family Association sent out three email alerts and posted an online article which reported that Hillsborough County School Board members were allowing CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations) officials to indoctrinate school children with propaganda including their version of Sharia law.  

Each school board member and the district superintendent received approximately 10,000 emails opposing CAIR officials from addressing students.  That number does not include emails these officials have received from individuals and other groups apart from Florida Family Association.  Florida Family Association continues to this day to submit public records requests regarding this issue.

Several organizations including local Tea Party leaders challenged the Hillsborough County School Board on February 14, 2012 to stop local CAIR officials from addressing students. The Tampa Bay Times reported in part "The issue arose late last year when conservative activist David Caton called attention to a visit to Steinbrenner High by Hassan Shibly, executive director of the Tampa-based Islamic group."  Click here to read report in The Tampa Bay Times.

Heritage's Domestic Policy Experts Respond to Last Night's Debate

Last night, Heritage Foundation experts live-blogged their analysis of the issues raised as President Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney debated. Heritage's Amy Payne rounds up what our experts were saying.

This first of the three scheduled presidential debates focused on domestic policy. Heritage's David Azerad commented on the candidates' ideas about the role of government:

When asked about the role of the government, Obama brought up his favorite metaphor, "the ladder of opportunity." And as usual, he incorrectly suggested that it's government spending that creates these ladders of opportunity... Given the President's statist and egalitarian impulses, perhaps the "escalator of results" might be a more fitting analogy next time: Everybody just hops on and we all get to the same place with little effort on our behalf.

Heritage Foundation policy experts have been busy analyzing last night's presidential candidates' debate and exposing liberal myths.

The President argued, for instance, that "over the last 30 months we've seen 5 million jobs created." Heritage's Lachlan Markay clarifies this claim:

While [The President's statement] is true, the president's choice of the "30 months" time frame was deliberately chosen so that he could tout the largest number of jobs created. 
If measured from February 2009, the month Obama took office, the American economy has only created about 316,000 jobs.

President Obama also cited a study-previously debunked by Heritage polity experts-analyzing Gov. Mitt Romney's tax plan. The report, produced by the left-leaning Tax Policy Center, had significant flaws and oversights in the assumptions they made about Romney's proposal.

(You don't need to know Chinese to understand what's going on, though you can click in the upper right hand corner to get a YouTube version in English).  I especially liked taking the chain saw to Big Bird while the Sesame Street cast looks on in horror.  (By the way, looks to me like Big Bird is going to be the Amy Carter of this debate cycle, but in reverse: Obama is going to look dumb defending BB.)

Support Chip Cravaack For Congress

Chip Cravaack scored the biggest upset of 2010 when he beat entrenched Democrat Jim Oberstar in Minnesota's 8th District. Cravaack's constituents like his pro-mining, pro-economic growth policies, but he is anathema to environmental extremists and the Democrats are coming after him hard this year. I attended a lunch for Cravaack last week and donated to his campaign; we followed up with this interview:

The 8th, which encompasses northeastern Minnesota, including Duluth and the Iron Range, has long been a union stronghold. Cravaack's military background as a Navy pilot and his history as a leader of the airline pilot's union opened doors for him in the district; he is a hard-working Congressman and has a good shot at re-election. While everyone is pointing to reasonable factors explaining Obama's face plant in last night's debate (arrogance, coddled too long by the MSM, thin air, etc), there may be a deeper, philosophical explanation, which means it won't get any better for Obama even if he figures out how to stop his Teleprompter-deprived stammering by the next debate.  In my post the other day on Lilla-Livered Liberals, I quoted Harvey Mansfield's remark from 25 years ago about "a liberalism that is politically exhausted and bored with itself."  I think the "boredom"-at a deep philosophical level-may explain Obama's real problem.

Once again I turn for a witness to Charles Kesler's I Am the Change, where he notes the following about Obama's variety of liberal "Progressivism":

As Harvey Mansfield pointed out, a key to Obama's political success is the way he presents himself as somehow beyond or above ordinary politics, which he disdains as a self-interested scramble. He thinks of himself, and wants us to think of him, as a nonpartisan or postpartisan figure. To the extent he must indulge in partisanship now, it's for the sake of putting an end to it in the future. "His politics is apolitical," Mansfield argued. "It considers its measures to be progressive, and progress to be irreversible."  In other words, Obama's postpartisanship is part of the great liberal double standard.  Liberals cursed by such hubris imagine they have the keys to the kingdom of History; they alone get to bless or condemn forevermore.

In other words, the bubble Obama inhabits is much larger than just the media cocoon and the cloistered nature of sycophancy inside the White House.  Once you assume that you are on "the side of History" that runs in only one direction, you become, first, intellectually lazy, and second, presumptuous, and unable to argue your position from the ground up.  It's easy to win debates in your own mind if you simply assume that you are right about everything.  And with the media telling you that you're so wonderful, why would you ever have second thoughts.

But just as the internet (and Fox!) have shattered the media monopoly, conservatives also shattered liberalism's intellectual monopoly, as Kesler goes on to explain:

The unquestionability of both progress and relativism died quietly in classrooms around the country. . .  The developments in political philosophy challenged the ends of progressivism, proving far more damaging to it. In sheer numbers the academy remained safely, overwhelmingly in the hands of the Left, whose members in fact grew more radical, with some notable exceptions, in these years. But they gradually lost the unchallenged intellectual ascendancy, though not the prestige, they once had enjoyed.

The Left either can't or won't confront this defect in their position today.  Obama shows liberalism's boredom with having to refresh and rearticulate its first principles.  Or, to adapt a famous line in a movie, "Obama-you can't handle the truth!"

 

The Out-of-Thin-Air Candidate?

I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen this CurrentTV clip, but Al Gore really does think the thin air in 5,000-feet Denver might explain Obama's sorry performance last night.  (But Al, I thought our air was getting thicker all the time from greenhouse gas emissions?)  You know you're in trouble when Al Gore notes you stink at presidential debates.

But maybe Al is on to something here.  Since Obama has been a lighter-than-air politician from the beginning, maybe he only floats at sea level (like Chicago, Columbia University, Cambridge, MA, Washington DC, etc)?

 

The Morning After

This photo pretty much says it all: Barack and Michelle Obama looking lost and forlorn, while a smiling, confident Mitt Romney collects his notes from the podium:

The verdict on last night's debate is unanimous. You can go to Drudge for a collection of reactions. The New York Post headlines, "Mitt Mauls O:"

The Daily Mail headlines: "The new Jimmy Carter? Obama slammed by media as even his own supporters trash debate performance after Romney's crushing win." Per Drudge, Michael Moore comments, "This is what happens when u pick John Kerry as your debate coach." Dennis Miller: "Obama better hope a kicked a** is covered under Obamacare."

So where do we go from here? My guess is that we will see a slight uptick in the polls for Romney, but don't expect anything dramatic. It takes time and reinforcement for people's perceptions to change. Last night was the beginning of a process, not the end.

The remaining debates will be important; more important, I think, than if the first one had not been such a blowout. The pressure will be on Obama to do better next time, and liberal moderators will do all they can to help him. (One reason last night's debate was so one-sided was that, with the exception of one or two rather feeble efforts to lend Obama a hand, Jim Lehrer stayed out of the way.)

So will Obama perform better in the remaining debates? He almost has to; unless he vomits on the stage like Justin Bieber, he won't do worse. But as last night's debate revealed, Obama has two intractable problems. The first is that Mitt Romney is much smarter, much more knowledgeable, and much more experienced than Obama. That isn't going to change, and it is going to be apparent any time the two men are on the stage together; it can only be a matter of degree.

The second problem is even more fundamental: as someone said this morning (if I could remember who, I would link), Obama didn't just have a bad night, he's had a bad four years. Last night was virtually the first time he has had to talk about his record-or, at least, stand on the stage and listen to someone else talk about it. The facts are grim, and no amount of preparation before the next debate, or spin after it, will make them go away. So last night began a process of evaluation that I hope and believe will culminate in a Romney victory on November 6.

Obama Sends Bizarre Fundraising E-mail After Debate Loss

Waking up this morning, I had a ton of e-mail in my inbox, but one really stood out. It was a fundraising e-mail for Barack Obama. Yes, even after his dismal debate performance against Mitt Romney, Obama was back to fundraising. But his e-mail message was one of the strangest I've seen.

 

First, let's start with the subject line. Again... this was an e-mail from Barack Obama's campaign. Supposedly, these are not a bunch of amateurs. Yet the subject line was simply: Hey. That's it. Just "Hey." They might have well just said Yo!

It's unanimous: Romney KO's Obama in 1st debate

Sore loser: Spitzer tries to save face, fails yet again

The Dish Network debate between Glenn Beck & Eliot Spitzer did not go well for the former Governor. Despite weeks of painstaking preparation, Spitzer managed to lose badly to Glenn who wore a t-shirt and drew charts on his hand in sharpie.
