Once upon a time racism used to be relatively easy to pin down. It was segregated lunch counters and slave ships, it was nooses and chains, it was the legal oppression of a group of people on account of the color of their skin. Then racism stopped being a set of laws and became an abstraction, first a set of attitudes and then a set of attitudes implying another set of attitudes.
Racism changed from laws that deliberately discriminate against black people to policies that serve to disadvantage black people, whether or not that is their intent. In 1971, 17 years after its landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling, the Supreme Court decided that schools shouldn't just not be forcibly segregated, but that they could be forcibly desegregated with the use of busing, even if there was no actual intent to segregate and where the racial differences were the result of geography. That same year in Griggs v. Duke Power Co., the Court ruled that a high school diploma job requirement was racially discriminatory because fewer black people possessed them.
From an attempt to overturn racist laws, the war on racism had shifted to forcibly legislating big government's idea of racial equality. The goal was no longer removing inequality, but artificially creating a desired statistical outcome.
With such a title, and from such a friendly organ, at first I thought Jodi Kantor's piece would be a collection of Obama's greatest political wins: His rapid rise in Illinois, his win over Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primaries, the passage of health care, and so on.
But the NYT piece is not about any of that. Rather, it is a deep look into the two outstanding flaws in Obama's executive leadership:
I am still searching for a daily schedule which includes more than just Tuesday at the DNC but I'm not sure I'm going to find one. Seems like the schedules are still being finalized and maybe we'll get the Wednesday schedule on Tuesday.
Here is a little rundown on the DNC highlights from WTSP:
Former CIA and Special Operations members are announcing the creation of OPSEC, a new nationwide public campaign to combat the spike in leaks and politicization of Intelligence and Special Operations missions that threaten their effectiveness and the safety of Americans who conduct them. OPSEC - short for Operational Security, meaning to eliminate or reduce the exploitation of critical information - will begin with the release of "Dishonorable Disclosures," a new documentary short film highlighting the problem from the perspective of those who have served in these critical positions. The film will also serve as the basis for a TV and online advertising effort.
"Intelligence and Special Operations members are angry and frustrated at how our work has been used for political advantage by officials across government, including President Obama himself who bears special responsibility as Commander in Chief," said Scott Taylor, chairman of OPSEC and a former Navy SEAL. "We want the American people to understand the cost of these leaks and politicization both on those who serve and on our national security and to hold those in positions of leadership accountable if it doesn't stop."
OPSEC is made up of individuals who served their country in the CIA, and Special Operations Forces (SOF) consisting of Navy SEALs, Army Special Forces, Marine Corps and Air Force Special Operations. It is organized as a 501(c)(4) nonpartisan public education campaign and is independent of any political party or campaign organization.
The campaign will begin with the release of "Dishonorable Disclosures," a documentary short film that views the impact of the increasing number of leaks on Intelligence and Special Operations missions, tradecraft, tactics and capabilities from the perspective of those who have relied on these tools to carryout similar missions and protect themselves and those they served alongside. The film will be shown at events in key states across the country over the next several months, including Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Colorado, North Carolina and Nevada. "Countless leaks, interviews and decisions by the Obama Administration and other government officials have undermined the success of our Intelligence and Special Operations forces and put future missions and personnel at risk," said Fred Rustmann, an OPSEC member and 24-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency. "OPSEC will carry a strong message across the country that it's time for President Obama and other administration officials to stop jeopardizing national security operations for political gain."

SION to Hold International Congress and Media Workshop to Address Islamic Supremacist War Against Free Speech

NEW YORK: The first session of the International Freedom Defense Congress, the operating body of the human rights organization Stop Islamization of Nations (SION), will be held in New York on September 11, 2012. The principal focus of the Congress will be a media workshop pertaining to Islamic supremacist attempts to restrict the freedom of speech in the free world, and the smear campaigns against freedom fighters in newspapers and media institutions in the West.
"The objective of this first-of-its-kind workshop is to develop media-related mechanisms to address the smear campaigns," SION said in a statement. It will also address the media's double standard regarding Islam and other religions, as epitomized in March 2012 by the New York Times' running of an anti-Catholic smear ad and rejection of a SION ad telling the truth about Islamic jihad.
It said the workshop will discuss at length the reasons behind and the results of the Western media's offensive campaigns against freedom of speech and the truth about Islam, jihad, Islamic supremacism and Muslims, which it added still occur from time to time.

Freedom fighters from all over the globe, journalists, intellectuals and academicians will be among the participants in the workshop, which will consist of brainstorming sessions to develop mechanisms for cooperation with external partners, and to develop an action plan to address the phenomenon of the Islamic war against free speech.
The organization noted that the workshop is of particular importance as it is the first ever to address the implications of Resolution 16/18 of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the stated goal of which is to "combat intolerance, negative stereotyping and stigmatisation of, discrimination, incitement to violence, and violence against persons based on religion or belief," but which is actually designed to restrict truthful speech about Islamic supremacism and jihad, so as to render the West mute and defenseless before the advancing threat of jihad and Sharia.
Resolution 16/18, which was adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva in March 2011, was backed by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the most recent Istanbul Process Conference in Washington in December.
This is widely viewed as a significant step toward furthering OIC efforts to destroy the freedom of speech and impose Sharia blasphemy laws on the free world.
"We are holding this Congress on the eleventh anniversary of the day jihad came to America in order to strike a blow for freedom," Geller said.

Information about Two Activities 1. Reserved Tables at community events We need volunteers to man a table at the Perkiomenville Auction on September 3rd at 2345 Upper Ridge Rd, Perkiomenville, PA We will be there from 8 AM to 10 AM and possibly later depending on you, our volenteers.
We will also be at the Peach Festival at Branch Creek Church, Main Street Harleysville, on September 8th between 8 AM to 5 PM.

Volunteers Needed Philadelphia Tea Party Patriots; i.e.PA Freedom Coalition needs help getting volunteers. The number of volunteers needed are 100 walkers/riders and 30 drivers with vehicles, starting Saturday, 15 September for eight consecutive Saturdays ending on November 3rd. The volunteers will take part in an organized, planned door-knocking effort specifically to visit with registered Independents in 83 swing precincts in Montgomery county, PA. Three staging meetings for volunteer sign-ups and familiarization training are scheduled: September 4th, Tuesday 6:00-8:30pm; September 8th and 9th, Saturday and Sunday, Doors will be open from 1:00 to 6:00pm for individuals to come in and sign up as volunteers. Purpose and Goal Our main PURPOSE: to get as many registered Independent voters to the polls and to cast their votes on issues and policies, not parties or personalities. Our main GOAL: to achieve a conservative majority in Montgomery county for the 2012 election. A conservative win in the highly populated Montgomery county is HUGH. And this change to a conservative majority in Montgomery County is REAL. We have need of 130 volunteers to take part in this door-knocking effort for eight consecutive Saturdays to swing these 83 precincts.
Why We Win In past elections held in Pennsylvania, the proof is in election results - so goes the Southeast, so goes Pennsylvania. And over the past 20 years of elections, Southeast counties; Philadelphia, Montgomery,
Chester and Delaware have all gone Blue and Bucks county to Purple. However, in this 2012 election, we will win back Montgomery County for the conservative right. Why is our confidence high? Is it because of our organized, planned door-to door strategy? Yes. Is it our door-knocking plan - specific to targeting registered Independents in 83 swing precincts? Yes.
How We Win In these swing precincts in the progressive parts of Montgomery county (closest to Philadelphia, PA), passed elections were won in 83 precincts by Democrats because of 2 votes and not greater than 119 votes; with both parties breaking even throughout the 450 precincts. Our organized, planned action brings our volunteers to visit these 83 precincts (or 1/5 of all precincts) - walk to talk to registered Independents and to place issues-based literature in their hands at their doors; for no-answers, an issue-oriented door hanger is used.
We are in the process of finding funding for our project.

Today I am proud to announce the launch of a groundbreaking documentary that will rattle the political establishment. The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet,The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.
The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.
Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.
Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.
The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.
The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization
Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.
The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center appwill, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.
It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on.
In a statement right out of a communist state, the Democrats started their convention with a bit of propaganda declaring we all belong to the government. Seriously.
This is unreal. The founders must be rolling over in their grave. The constitution starts with "We the People," not we the government. The government belongs to us, we do not belong to the government. The government is our servant. We do not serve government. We are Americans. We are not all wards or property of the state, despite Barack Obama's best efforts.
I think we can say the Democrats are fulling embracing Barack Obama's claim that "you didn't build that." It's clear from this we did not take Barack Obama out of context. The Democrats really do believe government built it all.
Under the improbable headline "Media: Obama is egotistical, selfish, dull," Politico's Dylan Byers noted Monday that over the Labor Day weekend, "major media outlets...lobb[ed] five high-profile bombs at the incumbent." The article itself isn't as noteworthy as the title, which is particularly eye-catching from a political publication whose left-leaning orientation is well known.
The examples Byers points to come from the New York Times, the Washington Post, HuffPo, the Wall Street Journal, and his own Politico. Let's take a quick look at them - and at the laugher that a senior campaign official offered in response.
A review of voter registration data for ten counties in Colorado details a pattern of voter bloat inflating registration rolls to numbers larger than the total voting age population. Using publicly available voter data and comparing it to U.S. Census records reveals the ten counties having a total registration ranging between 104 to 140 percent of the respective populations.
Counties such as Gilpin and Hinsdale have 110 percent of their populations registered to vote. Gilpin County has a total population of 5,441 with 17.4% of the population below the voting age, making the highest possible number of registered voters 4,494. Currently Gilpin County has 4909 registered voters. Hinsdale County has a total population of 830 with 20% of the population below the voting age, making the highest possible number of registered voters 664. At 110 percent registration, that means that there are 515 excess voter registrations in Gilpin county and 68 excess registrations for Hinsdale.
Bart Stupak was a vital swing vote in the Obamacare debate 2 years ago. As a pro-life Democrat he could not support Obama's signature initiative without some assurance that abortion would not be covered by the monstrous healthcare overhaul.
Following an Executive Order signed by President Obama that supposedly ensured that abortion would not be covered, Stupak declared victory for the pro-life movement. This in spite of the fact that many had said the Executive Order was toothless and would not prevent anything.
Last week the Democrats trotted out their outrage specialists to lament on televisions everywhere that MItt Romney did not talk about any of the wars.
Yesterday, the Democratic National Convention started in Charlotte and the Democrats are doing their best to not mention one word: sixteen, i.e. the $16 trillion in national debt the nation faces as of close of business this past Friday.
In fact, the Democrats spent Monday night attacking the GOP for a so called war on women while remember Ted Kennedy. Mary Jo Kopechne was unavailable for comment.
Evidently the poor professional press is finding the 2012 slog less than fully enjoyable. "If there is one narrative to anchor what often feels like a plotless 2012 campaign," writes Dylan Byers in a Politico article titled "Reporters: We Loathe 2012 Campaign," it's " media disillusionment." His first citation is of New York Times Magazine's Mark Leibovich, who wondered "How am I ever going to get through [the 2012 campaign]?" in an August 29 article entitled "Feel the Loathing on the Campaign Trail."

COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 63 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS
There were several disturbing reports over the weekend suggesting that Obama has severely undercut Israel's position as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu weighs his options for dealing with Iran's nuclear weapons program.
Time reported Friday that a major joint military exercise between Israel and the United States is being dramatically scaled back. The exercise has already been delayed once. Rescheduled to take place next month, we are now learning that instead of 5,000 U.S. troops, maybe only 1,200 will participate. The Time report adds:
"Patriot antimissile systems will arrive in Israel as planned, but the crews to operate them will not. Instead of two Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense warships being dispatched to Israeli waters, the new plan is to send one..."
With each passing day, the tension between the U.S. and Israel grows. In fact, Israel's confidence in Obama is so low that, according to Time, Prime Minister Netanyahu has requested a written pledge from President Obama "committing to U.S. military action by a specific date" if Iran continues with its nuclear weapons program. Prime Minister Netanyahu is still waiting for a reply.
Unfortunately, the news gets worse. Ynetnews reported yesterday that the Obama Administration has recently communicated with Iran through "covert back-channels in Europe." Is Obama sending Iran a last-minute stern warning to abandon its nuclear program? No.
The message that was reportedly relayed to Tehran is that the U.S. will not back an Israeli strike against Iran so long as Iran refrains from retaliating against U.S. interests in the Middle East. If this report is accurate, Obama has just thrown Israel under the proverbial bus.
Nobody wants another war. But if Iran believes the U.S. and Israel are divided, then war is more likely. Upon hearing this message, the mullahs must have thought to themselves, "Praise Allah, the Americans are weaker than we thought!" To Israel, the message is "You're on your own. We won't stand with you."
But ask yourself this question: Is there a leader on this planet, if faced with an existential threat from an avowed enemy, who wouldn't act to preempt such a threat? Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly denied the Holocaust and repeatedly promised a second Holocaust by threating to "wipe Israel off the map." His scientists are now working furiously on the very weapons that would enable his "dream" to become a reality.
How long should Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli people hold their breath hoping the jihadists who control Iran will have a change of heart?
Bad News For Obama
It may be too early yet to accurately gauge Mitt Romney's bounce from last week's GOP convention. But a new poll of likely voters conducted for The Hill has some bad news for Obama. Just consider these findings:
58% of likely voters were dissatisfied with Obama's performance on the economy. Just 40% were satisfied.
Only 31% felt the country was better off after four years of Obama. 52% said the country was worse off, while 15% said it was about the same.
Only 40% of likely voters felt Obama deserved reelection based on his job performance. 54% said he did not deserve to be reelected.
Exposing Obama's Extremism
The pro-marriage ads being run by my Super PAC, Campaign for American Values, are getting noticed. There is much wailing and gnashing of teeth by the delegates and left-wing activists gathered at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, I can assure you! We've been taking press calls from reporters who want to learn more about this effort.
My friends, this is not your father's Democratic Party. From running record deficits to demanding tax increases at every opportunity, to ramming through a massive socialist healthcare plan, the Democratic Party of Obama/Biden/Pelosi/Reid is radical in every way.
But the Democrats' extremism is most obvious when it comes to values issues, such as the sanctity of life, the meaning of marriage and religious liberty. To take these issues off the table in an election of such critical importance would be a colossal mistake.
Here's something else to keep in mind. Obama and his liberal allies have been telling us that if you believe in the commonsense meaning of marriage as the union of one man and one woman, you are a bigot.
If you believe that unborn children have rights and deserve protection under the law, you are anti-woman. And if you believe that religious employers and churches should not be forced to pay for contraception or other products and services that violate their core values, then you are waging a "war on women" too.
But Democrats were eager to announce late last week that Cardinal Timothy Dolan would be delivering the closing prayer at their convention, just as he did at the Republican National Convention. Now think about that for a moment. Do the Democrats believe their own rhetoric?
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the head of the American Catholic Church, has been one of the most outspoken critics of Obama's assaults on the sanctity of life, traditional marriage and religious liberty through Obamacare's big government mandates.
If Democrats really believed their own rhetoric, why would they invite one of the biggest defenders of "bigotry" and proponents of their so-called "war on women" to pray at their convention?
I have no doubt that many of the DNC's delegates do believe their radical rhetoric and think the worst of conservatives. But I suspect many in the party's leadership also realize that there are millions of Americans who strongly believe in traditional values and that they can't win without fooling some of them.

RJC: Democrats Strip Critical Pro-Israel Language from Platform
RJC Calls on Top Democrats to Reinstate Pro-Israel Language
Washington, D.C. (September 4, 2012) -- The Republican Jewish Coalition today expressed its outrage that the Democrats' 2012 platform strips recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel from the party's official policy document.
In 2008, the Democratic platform read, "Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel." Shockingly, the 2012 platform does not mention Jerusalem at all. (1)
RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks said, "In 2008, candidate Barack Obama flip-flopped on Jerusalem, telling a pro-Israel audience at the AIPAC policy conference that Jerusalem should remain the undivided capital of Israel, then backtracking the next day.(2) Last July, the White House press secretary was unable to say whether Tel Aviv or Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. (3)
"Now we see the full expression of Pres. Obama and the Democrat Party's policy on Jerusalem - they don't even mention it.
"This administration is painfully out of touch with the mainstream of the Jewish community, which knows that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and that it must remain the undivided capital of the Jewish State of Israel."
In addition, the 2012 Democratic platform drops language from previous platforms to:
demand the isolation of Hamas until that organization renounces terrorism and accepts other requirements of the peace process;
insist that any settlement of the so-called "refugees" question in a final settlement make a future Palestinian state, not Israel, the destination for Palestinian "refugees";
note that it's not realistic to expect outcome of negotiations to be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949.
Brooks continued: "We call on Democratic National Committee chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and any Democratic leaders who value the party's traditionally firm pro-Israel stance to restore the missing pro-Israel language to their party's platform - and especially to bring back the language declaring that Jerusalem is and will be the capital of Israel.
"This should not be a partisan issue. The vast majority of American Jews support Israel and recognize Jerusalem as its capital. It is unconscionable that the Democrat Party does not see fit to do the same."
Our friends at the Center for Security Policy captured the 58 second segment below, showing the adoption of the American Laws for American Courts (ALAC) concept into the national Republican Party platform.
When you watch it, note the reference to the passage of ALAC in Kansas. This effort was led by State Rep. Peggy Mast, a valued friend of ACT! for America whom we honored with our "Patriot" award at this year's National Conference & Legislative Briefing.
Rep. Mast's leadership, coupled with over 30,000 phone calls and emails generated by ACT! for America chapter leaders and members, led to the passage of ALAC into law in Kansas.
When the Republican Party was fielding ideas and "seconds" for its platform, ACT! for America generated hundreds of "seconds" in support of adding the ALAC concept to the platform.
CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, attempted to prevent the pro-ALAC resolution from being included in the GOP platform.
They failed.
That's good news for freedom-and bad news for the Muslim Brotherhood.

Attempting to select THE ten worst lies told by a pathological liar like Barack Obama is a difficult task. There are so many lies that it is hard to know where to start - a good case can be made for so many of his lies as top ten material. During his last State of the Union speech Barack Obama claimed "American oil production is the highest that it's been in eight years." In fact the Congressional Research Service reports that 96% of the increase comes from oil fields out of Obama's control. By contrast the production from federally owned oil fields he does control has dropped by 275,000 barrels a day. It is worth noting that privately owned fields have increased by 395,000 barrels a day.

Over the past four decades union membership in America has fallen from about 35% to single digits. It would be still lower if it were not for "agency shop" laws that force government employees to either join a union or suffer harassment. In most instance workers cannot and will not be hired unless they agree to join a union. Now after years of watching their dues go directly to liberal Democrats with little pretense of fairness toward other political ideas, workers have fled private industry unions and brought law suits against public employee unions to stop these scams. I've witnessed two of the most radical developments in my lifetime the last four years. One is the fact of less than one percent interest rates on most savings (well below the rate of inflation), and the other is an epidemic of 20-something unemployment. All that is the new normal.
Polls following the GOP convention are sending mixed signals about a Romney surge. This race has been close for months, and there is no evidence yet of a breakout by either candidate. The debates may offer the last chance for that.
Obama campaign officials explained that the president plans to use Joe Biden's formulation to clarify every single aspect of Obama's record. A White House press release revealed examples which Obama plans to use in his convention acceptance speech and on the campaign trail. Labor Day I flew to Dallas today to give a speech. The flight was uneventful except for a woman seated in front of me who started talking at about 2 PM PDT and did not stop talking at all -- not once -- for the whole flight. How can she do that? She talked for four solid hours.
I checked into my wonderful hotel, the Gaylord Texan, and watched a show on Nat Geo about a man from America put into prison in the Soviet in 1976 for trafficking in heroin. Scary, but what a dope he was.
Then, a show on MSNBC hosted by my old pal, Chris Matthews, about Barack Obama. It was an extremely laudatory show, about how Mr. Obama tapped into all of young America's wish to have Hope and Change rule the land.
Mr. Obama's shining desire to have Hope and Change guide our politics was -- supposedly -- what got him elected.
Now, I know Chris Matthews. He is a very pleasant, smart, articulate man. Can he really say that Mr. Obama has brought about Hope and Change? What has he changed? We are far poorer than when he took office. Our national debt is far higher. We are still in a hopeless war in Afghanistan. Black people are still very much less well off than white people. What has Mr. Obama done that's good?
California Legislature Adopts Bill Granting Driver's Licenses to Obama Amnesty Beneficiaries
Last week, the California Senate and Assembly passed a measure that would allow illegal aliens who receive deferred action from the federal government to obtain California driver's licenses.
California Sheriffs' Association Opposes Anti-Detainer Legislation
Several prominent California sheriffs have independently spoken out against the legislation, asserting that if it is signed into law they would be given the false choice between violating federal or state law.
DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz has claimed that Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador to the U.S., told her that Republican actions are "dangerous" to Israel. She reportedly made this comment at a training session for Jewish Democrats held by the Obama campaign at the Democratic National Convention. The training was designed to assist Jewish Democrats in the thankless (but sadly none-too-difficult) task of convincing Jews to vote for Obama. Wasserman Schultz concluded her remarks by saying, "We know, and I've heard no less than Ambassador Michael Oren say this, that what the Republicans are doing is dangerous for Israel."
Michael Oren, however, denies making any such comment, and it would be shocking if had made it. First, Oren is an Israeli diplomat, not an American political partisan. Second, there is no evidence that his government believes Republican actions are dangerous to Israel, and no sound basis for such a belief. The danger to Israel comes from Iran. Obama has failed to mitigate it. The Republicans are likely to be of more assistance and certainly won't be of less.
In any event, Oren's denial could not be more emphatic:
I categorically deny that I ever characterized Republican policies as harmful to Israel. Bipartisan support is a paramount national interest for Israel, and we have great friends on both sides of the aisle.
I like the "both sides of aisle" part, a reference to Israel's good relations with Congressional Democrats. President Obama sits on neither side of the congressional aisle.
Being at odds with Israel's ambassador to the U.S. clearly presents a problem for blabbermouth Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the Democrats. She can either back down or call Oren a liar.
First Barack Obama flip-flopped on the status of Jerusale,. Then his spokesman was unable to say whether Jerusalem or Tel Aviv is the capital of Israel. Now the 2012 Democratic Party platform has made it official. The Republican Jewish Coalition has the story:
In 2008, the Democratic platform read, "Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel." Shockingly, the 2012 platform does not mention Jerusalem at all.
Nor is that the only instance of the Democrats' watering down their platform on issues relating to the Middle East and to terrorism. The RJC continues:
In addition, the 2012 Democratic platform drops language from previous platforms to:
* demand the isolation of Hamas until that organization renounces terrorism and accepts other requirements of the peace process;
* insist that any settlement of the so-called "refugees" question in a final settlement make a future Palestinian state, not Israel, the destination for Palestinian "refugees";
* note that it's not realistic to expect outcome of negotiations to be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949.
Platforms can be meaningless happy talk; at times, however, they give valuable insight into what a party's leaders really think.
We'll see whether any additional unpleasantness awaits Burton. If he were a Republican, there's little doubt that the party would have purged him by now.
Last week, I compared Elizabeth Warren to Martha Coakley, the Democrat who lost "Ted Kennedy's Senate seat" to Scott Brown. Today, Politico confirms that Warren, like Coakley, is struggling against Brown, albeit more glamorously. A PPP poll in mid-August gave Brown a 5 point lead. That's the same margin by which Brown defeated Coakley
Politico notes that Warren is losing about a fifth of Democratic voters to Brown, and that more voters think she's too liberal than believe he's too conservative - by an 11 percent margin. Meanwhile, Brown in the words of important Democratic donor Bruce Percelay, is "the perfect Massachusetts Republican; he's socially moderate and fiscally conservative and not a strong ideologue - people are very comfortable with that."
Percelay himself is very comfortable with Brown. A close friend of John Kerry and the donor of thousands of dollars to Reps. Ed Markey and Mike Capuano as well as the national Democratic Party, Percelay is supporting the incumbent Republican Senator in this election. He explained:
Elizabeth Warren is not someone who I can comfortably wrap my arms around. . . .While she's very quick to chastise the wealthy, a lot of her fundraising is coming from very wealthy people on the West Coast. There's a concern about how genuine she is. Conversely, Scott Brown is an extremely genuine person.
Percelay is far from the only Massachusetts Dem politico to support Brown. And even the Democratic mayor of Boston has yet to endorse Warren.
Warren will be a featured speaker at the Democratic Convention this week. But whether that will help her back home remains to be seen. As Marisa DeFranco, whom Warren defeated in the Democratic primary, puts it: "There's a real disconnect between the national Democrats and people on the ground."
Right-thinking lefties everywhere have had their knickers in a twist over the House Republican proposal to curtail National Science Foundation funding for social science (especially political science), while maintaining funding for the "hard" sciences like physics, chemistry, etc. Well, perhaps papers like the one from Matthew Ranson, posted the other day on the Social Science Research Network, suggests why someone might look askance at social science, whether funded by the government or not. To paraphrase that great line from Randall Jarrell, you have to read it not to believe it. Herewith the abstract to "Crime, Weather, and Climate Change":
This paper estimates the impact of climate change on the prevalence of criminal activity in the United States. The analysis is based on a 50-year panel of monthly crime and weather data for 2,972 U.S. counties. I identify the effect of weather on monthly crime by using a semi-parametric bin estimator and controlling for county-by-month and county-by-year fixed effects. The results show that temperature has a strong positive effect on criminal behavior, with little evidence of lagged impacts. Between 2010 and 2099, climate change will cause an additional 30,000 murders, 200,000 cases of rape, 1.4 million aggravated assaults, 2.2 million simple assaults, 400,000 robberies, 3.2 million burglaries, 3.0 million cases of larceny, and 1.3 million cases of vehicle theft in the United States.
Now, the idea that climate change would lead to more crime isn't exactly brand new-it's been on the infamous WarmList of all the things caused or made worse by climate change for some time now (though the Warmlist link to previous crime predictions has gone dead). And it makes some intuitive sense: of course assaults go up in hot weather. (But did we need social science to tell us? This seems another instance of social science "proving" "with rigor" what most people know by common sense.) On the other hand, this suggests those Freakonomics guys may have missed a possible cause of the declining crime rate of the last 20 years-the increasing use of air conditioning! Which also suggests a partial remedy in the event of significant climate change. In fact, buried in the text of the full study is this "why-am-I-bothering-to-read-this?" caveat:
It is also worth emphasizing that the estimates presented here do not take into account longer-term adaptation mechanisms. If climate change does cause a permanent increase in the frequency of crime, people in affected areas will have the opportunity to modify their behavior to avoid being victimized. Furthermore, it is likely that law enforcement agencies will respond with increased policing activity. The potential for such actions suggests that the estimates in this paper should be viewed as an upper bound on the potential impacts of climate change on crime.
Above all, can anyone really give credence to the specificity of this 90-year projection, given that there isn't a social scientist anywhere who can convincingly explain the rise of the crime rate in the 1960s-70s-80s, let alone the subsequent unexpected fall in the crime rate of the last 20 years?
Climate economist Richard Tol has been having great fun with this, tweeting "How long before a rapist argues 'I'm innocent, climate change made me do it'?" (Tol, who is cited in the Ranson paper-as he was in the infamous Stern review that he also shredded-has serious criticisms to make, too: "Ranson paper confuses weather and climate, ignores seasonal integration, and suffers from omitted variable bias.") I'll look forward to Roger Pielke Jr. weighing in on this, too.
And what, pray tell, is a "semi-parametric bin estimator"? My occasional writing partner Ken Green emails to say that "It sounds like something Marvin the Martian would use to attack Duck Dodgers in the 24th and a halfth thentury! 'Stand where you are, Earthling, or I will have to shoot you with my semi-parametric bin estimator!'"
I'm sure Mr. Ranson's semi-parametric bin estimator represents the acme of contemporary statistical rigor (if you want to get a quick headache some time, try to have someone explain the fine points of "unit root" statistical analysis), but that's exactly the problem-specialists in the social sciences tend to write for each other rather than an intelligent reading public, and can never be bothered to decode their methodology for non-specialists, which makes it hard for non-specialists to tell genuine rigor from postmodern jargon designed deliberately to obfuscate.
By the way, when we finally get around to having a trophy company work up the actual Green Weenie statuettes that we'll send all the winners, I think we'll make it in the shape of a semi-parametric bin estimator.
Education Waiver Would Spell Entanglement for AlabamaBy Lindsey Burke
Alabama is considering requesting a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education to relieve the state of some of the burdensome requirements of No Child Left Behind (NCLB). But the waivers represent a troubling pact with Washington: To get relief from federal mandates, Alabama must agree to more federal intervention. It's a bad deal.
Alabama is seeking a waiver in large part to avoid having to comply with the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) requirement in NCLB (a federal mandate requiring 100 percent student proficiency in math and reading/language arts). Under NCLB, schools that fail to make AYP are subject to "cascading sanctions" ranging from implementing a school improvement plan to a complete school restructuring.
Those sanctions are tough indeed, and illustrate the extent to which Washington intervention in local school policy has grown.
In order to be granted a waiver, however, Alabama must agree to the Obama Administration's preferred education policies-essentially, what the White House believes is best for Alabama students.

The Democratic National Convention kicks off in Charlotte, NC today. The tagline for the week is "We make it possible." Who is this "we"? Is it government, the party, the city, or perhaps private citizens?
Intentionally or not, the line echoes President Obama's off-the-prompter remarks during a speech in Roanoke, VA. in July.
"[L]ook, if you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own. You didn't get there on your own. I'm always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there," the President said.
"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet."
Commentators have tried to downplay his comments, insisting that, taken in context, his remarks amount to a statement that individual business owners didn't build the "roads, bridges, infrastructure, education, emergency services and law and order" that make it possible to run a business.
Yet, no one is arguing for eliminating roads and bridges.
Though rarely stated so bluntly today, this sentiment of "you didn't build that" is typically progressive. Theodore Roosevelt used the meme back in 1912, based on the collective work of Herbert Croly.
Government is the mother milk of human flourishing. The perfect case in point is the "Julia" campaign, which traces a fictional woman's life and ascribed all good things in it to federal-and Obama administration-initiatives. In this world, Julia's good life wasn't built by her, or her parents, or her community, but by the government. Unless the government builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.
The audacity of this argument is rare. Progressives usually prefer to advance their ideology under the cloak of non-ideological pragmatism-liberals are just doing "what works."
But, the tagline combined with President Obama's comments-"We make it possible" because "you didn't build that"-reveal how limitless the progressive vision of government is.
This isn't about "what works." The current national debate is about the meaning of the American project and self government and whether we should reject the inherent limits on government outlined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. This is an important debate about our past-and our future. Recognize what is at stake.

As of today, the vast majority of American students have begun a new school year. As lunches are packed and carpool lines grow, Heritage reviews the good, bad, and ugly in education.
The Good
Support for school choice is at an all-time high. In a poll released in August, school choice favorability jumped 10 percentage points since last year, a sign that the proliferation of options such as vouchers, education savings accounts, and online learning is creating a welcome choice for families across the country.
Social promotion is becoming less popular. In North Carolina, legislators approved a measure to end social promotion. Rather than automatically passing students on to the next grade, all third-grade students will be required to read at grade level before advancing to the fourth grade. Other states that have implemented this policy suggest that it is helpful in boosting student achievement.
Online, customized learning is on the rise.Individualized online learning options allow more emphasis on areas where students are struggling, without holding back their peers who may be ready for the next level.
Teachers union membership is declining. The National Education Association is projecting a loss of 308,000 members since 2010. One of the union's top officials, treasurer Becky Pringle, blames "stupid" education reform: "We're living with a recession that just won't end, political attacks that have turned brutal, and societal changes that are impacting us-from stupid education 'reform' to an explosion of technology-all coming together to impact us in ways that we had never anticipated."
The Bad
The Administration is singling out minority students for government "help" instead of raising them up through increased options. Over the summer, President Obama signed an executive order to form the new White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans. According to the White House, the new initiative, which will work across federal agencies, "aims to ensure that all African American students receive an education that fully prepares them for high school graduation, college completion, and productive careers."
Parents and taxpayers would be correct to be skeptical of a new Washington initiative to improve student outcomes. A new evaluation by Matthew Chingos of the Brookings Institution and Paul Peterson of Harvard shows a far more promising route to improving academic opportunity for the students the President's initiative aims to help: school vouchers. The study of low-income students in New York City found a 24 percent increase in college enrollment among African-American students who were awarded and used vouchers to attend private schools.
This success has already proven the vital role of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program. Students who have used vouchers to attend private schools in the nation's capital have a 91 percent graduation rate, while graduation rates in D.C. public schools hover around 60 percent.
The Ugly
Average per-pupil spending in public schools is reaching historic highs. Nationally, average per-pupil spending exceeds $11,400 this year, meaning a child entering kindergarten today can expect to have no less than $148,000 spent on his or her education by the time the child graduates high school. In all, more than $570 billion will be spent on public K-12 education this year.
Continual increases in the money spent per child and in overall spending haven't led to increases in academic achievement. Heritage's Lindsey Burke notes:
We continue to fund institutions-sending that money to schools-instead of actually funding children. Imagine if a child could put those dollars in a funding "backpack" and take that $11,400 to any school-public, private, or virtual. As in every other sector of American life, we would likely see outcomes improve as a result of competitive pressure placed on the government school system.
Despite the successes of more individualized learning and school choice, the Obama Administration wants to further centralize education in Washington through national standards and tests. It has been trying to entice states with waivers from the onerous No Child Left Behind law, which it gives to states that agree to adopt the Administration's standards instead.
Implementing Washington-controlled education standards means that states, local school boards, and ultimately parents will have less say in their children's education. This year's homework assignment for conservatives: continue the fight for increased parental control, individualized options for students, and decreased government interference in education.

Racism changed from laws that deliberately discriminate against black people to policies that serve to disadvantage black people, whether or not that is their intent. In 1971, 17 years after its landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling, the Supreme Court decided that schools shouldn't just not be forcibly segregated, but that they could be forcibly desegregated with the use of busing, even if there was no actual intent to segregate and where the racial differences were the result of geography. That same year in Griggs v. Duke Power Co., the Court ruled that a high school diploma job requirement was racially discriminatory because fewer black people possessed them.
