Radical Islam Joins the DNC

It is troubling that the Democratic National Convention has decided to promote and lend its name and national political platform to the organizers of the "Jummah at the DNC". The leaders of this event - Jibril Hough and Imam Siraj Wahhaj as advertised are no moderates. They are radicals. These individuals embrace Islamist supremacy and have demonstrated support for radical ideologies.

'Issues' or America?

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | By Thomas Sowell

There are some very serious issues at stake in this year's election - so many that some people may not be able to see the forest for the trees. Individual issues are the trees, but the forest is the future of America as we have known it.

The America that has flourished for more than two centuries is being quietly but steadily dismantled by the Obama administration, during the process of dealing with particular issues.

For example, the merits or demerits of President Obama's recent executive order, suspending legal liability for young people who are here illegally, presumably as a result of being brought here as children by their parents, can be debated pro and con. But such a debate overlooks the much more fundamental undermining of the whole American system of Constitutional government.

The separation of powers into legislative, executive and judicial branches of government is at the heart of the Constitution of the United States - and the Constitution is at the heart of freedom for Americans.

No President of the United States is authorized to repeal parts of legislation passed by Congress. He may veto the whole legislation, but then Congress can override his veto if they have enough votes. Nevertheless, every President takes an oath to faithfully execute the laws that have been passed and sustained - not just the ones he happens to agree with.

If laws passed by the elected representatives of the people can be simply over-ruled unilaterally by whoever is in the White House, then we are no longer a free people, choosing what laws we want to live under.

When a President can ignore the plain language of duly passed laws, and substitute his own executive orders, then we no longer have "a government of laws, and not of men" but a President ruling by decree, like the dictator in some banana republic.

New Campaign launched by former CIA, Special Operations Members to combat leaks and politicization of National Security Info

Kicks Off Nationwide With Release Of Documentary Short Film Titled "Dishonorable Disclosures"

OPSEC Website: http://www.opsecteam.org/

Former CIA and Special Operations members are announcing the creation of OPSEC, a new nationwide public campaign to combat the spike in leaks and politicization of Intelligence and Special Operations missions that threaten their effectiveness and the safety of Americans who conduct them. OPSEC - short for Operational Security, meaning to eliminate or reduce the exploitation of critical information - will begin with the release of "Dishonorable Disclosures," a new documentary short film highlighting the problem from the perspective of those who have served in these critical positions. The film will also serve as the basis for a TV and online advertising effort.

http://www.opsecteam.org/

"Intelligence and Special Operations members are angry and frustrated at how our work has been used for political advantage by officials across government, including President Obama himself who bears special responsibility as Commander in Chief," said Scott Taylor, chairman of OPSEC and a former Navy SEAL. "We want the American people to understand the cost of these leaks and politicization both on those who serve and on our national security and to hold those in positions of leadership accountable if it doesn't stop."

OPSEC is made up of individuals who served their country in the CIA, and Special Operations Forces (SOF) consisting of Navy SEALs, Army Special Forces, Marine Corps and Air Force Special Operations. It is organized as a 501(c)(4) nonpartisan public education campaign and is independent of any political party or campaign organization.

The campaign will begin with the release of "Dishonorable Disclosures," a documentary short film that views the impact of the increasing number of leaks on Intelligence and Special Operations missions, tradecraft, tactics and capabilities from the perspective of those who have relied on these tools to carryout similar missions and protect themselves and those they served alongside. The film will be shown at events in key states across the country over the next several months, including Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Colorado, North Carolina and Nevada. "Dishonorable Disclosures" can be seen here.

"Countless leaks, interviews and decisions by the Obama Administration and other government officials have undermined the success of our Intelligence and Special Operations forces and put future missions and personnel at risk," said Fred Rustmann, an OPSEC member and 24-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency. "OPSEC will carry a strong message across the country that it's time for President Obama and other administration officials to stop jeopardizing national security operations for political gain."

More information about OPSEC and news about the release of "Dishonorable Disclosures" can be found at http://www.opsecteam.org/.

Obama and the Politics of Treason

The Blaze | Buck Sexton | Posted on August 21, 2012 at 12:36pm

Obama and the Politics of Treason President Obama has dismissed and derided the former military and intelligence officers who believe his administration passed out sensitive national security information for partisan gain. In a press conference yesterday, he said of the Special Operations OPSEC Education Fund and similar groups-"I don't take these folks too seriously."

Unsurprisingly, the White House has been quick to attack the men behind these accusations instead of explaining to the American people that this administration has not leveraged defense secrets for positive press reports. The best Obama was able to muster in his defense yesterday was "this kind of stuff springs up before election time."

Of course, this does not adequately address accusations of leaks that many believe could amount to treason. While the specific source of the leaks remains in question, as a former intelligence officer, I see why so many informed observers, including the OPSEC whistleblowers, smell something rotten at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Let's press into the facts of the case.

Unelectable 2012

Unelectable 2012 When you think of the great presidential debates throughout history, there's Lincoln and Douglas in 1858, Kennedy and Nixon in 1960, and then there is Glenn's new live comedy stage show, Unelectable 2012.

Since Glenn couldn't personally visit every city in America on his Unelectable 2012 tour, he has decided that the final show will be simulcast LIVE in movie theaters all over the country, probably one in your town! Watch Glenn drown in his own sweat while you relax in air conditioning, eating nachos and Milk Duds.

This is an amazingly funny show, the kind of presidential debate that you'll never actually see because Glenn plays a candidate who tells the truth! Joined by the writers and performers of GBTV's sketch comedy show, The B.S. of A., many are saying it could be the funniest show Glenn's ever done, and it ends with an inspiring message that will have you on your feet full of hope. It's a night of fun the whole family can enjoy! With the election season we've got in front of us, this may be the only "funny-on-purpose" thing related to politics for years to come.

SION to Hold International Congress and Media Workshop to Address Islamic Supremacist War Against Free Speech

The world's leading forces for freedom will be there. There is a suggested contribution of $36 per person.  Register now, space is limited. September 11, 2012, UN Plaza Millenium Hotel, 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

NEW YORK: The first session of the International Freedom Defense Congress, the operating body of the human rights organization Stop Islamization of Nations (SION), will be held in New York on September 11, 2012. The principal focus of the Congress will be a media workshop pertaining to Islamic supremacist attempts to restrict the freedom of speech in the free world, and the smear campaigns against freedom fighters in newspapers and media institutions in the West.

"The objective of this first-of-its-kind workshop is to develop media-related mechanisms to address the smear campaigns," SION said in a statement. It will also address the media's double standard regarding Islam and other religions, as epitomized in March 2012 by the New York Times' running of an anti-Catholic smear ad and rejection of a SION ad telling the truth about Islamic jihad.

It said the workshop will discuss at length the reasons behind and the results of the Western media's offensive campaigns against freedom of speech and the truth about Islam, jihad, Islamic supremacism and Muslims, which it added still occur from time to time.

"The workshop will represent a quantum leap in media action, as it discusses, beyond rhetoric, the practical steps to address the phenomenon of the Islamic war against free speech," SION President Pamela Geller said.  Fighting Back in the War on Free Speech Pamela Geller, March 18, 2012

Freedom fighters from all over the globe, journalists, intellectuals and academicians will be among the participants in the workshop, which will consist of brainstorming sessions to develop mechanisms for cooperation with external partners, and to develop an action plan to address the phenomenon of the Islamic war against free speech.

The organization noted that the workshop is of particular importance as it is the first ever to address the implications of Resolution 16/18 of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the stated goal of which is to "combat intolerance, negative stereotyping and stigmatisation of, discrimination, incitement to violence, and violence against persons based on religion or belief," but which is actually designed to restrict truthful speech about Islamic supremacism and jihad, so as to render the West mute and defenseless before the advancing threat of jihad and Sharia.

Resolution 16/18, which was adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva in March 2011, was backed by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the most recent Istanbul Process Conference in Washington in December.

This is widely viewed as a significant step toward furthering OIC efforts to destroy the freedom of speech and impose Sharia blasphemy laws on the free world.

"We are holding this Congress on the eleventh anniversary of the day jihad came to America in order to strike a blow for freedom," Geller said.

SION President Geller is the author of Stop Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance (WND Books) and The Post-American Presidency: The Obama Administration's War On America (Simon & Schuster). SION Vice President is the acclaimed author and Islam expert, Robert Spencer, author of the New York Times bestsellers, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades) and The Truth About Muhammad (both Regnery).

The SION Board of Advisers also includes Oskar Freysinger, a Swiss Parliamentarian and member of the Swiss People's Party (SVP), who won international renown for his leadership of the successful campaign against the construction of minarets in Switzerland; Cliff Kincaid, editor of Accuracy in Media (AIM) and a leader of the struggle to keep the jihadist propaganda network Al-Jazeera off American airwaves; Dr. Ashraf Rameleh, President of Voice of the Copts, an international organization standing up for the human rights of Coptic Christians and all religious minorities against religious bigotry and intolerance; Dr. Ali Sina, the renowned ex-Muslim author and founder of FaithFreedom.org; Dr. Wafa Sultan, the ex-Muslim human rights activist and author; the German pro-freedom activist Stefan Herre of Politically Incorrect; the Israeli author Dr. Mordechai Kedar; the Hindu human rights activist Babu Suseelan; Anders Gravers of Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE); and Canadian publisher and free speech defender Ezra Levant.

Speakers at SION's International Freedom Defense Congress will include Kedar, Rameleh, Sina, Kincaid, and Gravers, as well as Danish free speech advocate Lars Hedegaard; Italian human rights activists Magdi Christiano Allam and Valentina Colombo; English politician and freedom fighter Paul Weston; and renowned Muhammad cartoonist Lars Vilks. More speakers will be announced shortly.

SION stands for:

--  The freedom of speech - as opposed to Islamic prohibitions of          "blasphemy" and "slander," which are used effectively to quash
          honest discussion of jihad and Islamic supremacism;
--  The freedom of conscience - as opposed to the Islamic death
         penalty for apostasy;
--  The equality of rights of all people before the law - as          opposed to Sharia's institutionalized discrimination against          women and non-Muslims.

A Brief History & Description of Agenda 21

 By Kelly OConnell
Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Whether there is such a thing as a world plan for socialist domination must be answered by individuals pondering recent, sometimes strange confluences of world events. But if there were such a plan, would it appear in any clearer form that the United Nations Agenda 21 program?

Agenda 21 is a plank of UN policy encouraging the globe to embrace Sustainable Development, which conservatives understand as a code word for global Marxism:

Sustainable development sounds like a nice idea, right? It sounds nice, until you scratch the surface and find that Agenda 21 and sustainable development are really cloaked plans to impose the tenets of social justice/socialism on the world. At risk from Agenda 21; Private property ownership; Single-family homes; Private car ownership and individual travel choices; and Privately owned farms.

Agenda 21 remains to many, classic Marxism which must be rejected-as the Alabama legislature did recently.

I. Evolution of Agenda 21: Journey to Sustainable Development

The following is a brief evolution of Agenda 21, the UN program designed to help save the planet.

A. Ramsar Convention (1971)

According to the site for ANPED, the Northern Alliance for Sustainability, there were a number of International Environmental Agreements (IEA's) which came before Agenda 21. Of the 1131 listed Agreements and Modifications, ANPED singles out a handful as significant before Agenda 21, starting with the 1971 Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat). Another site, Texans Against Agenda 21, also states that the seed agreement for Agenda 21 was Ramsar:

 SMART METER ALERT!

Dear Patriots,

Peco has stopped installing Smart Meters which are part of UN Agenda 21 (Sustainable Development).  If you have had a Smart Meter installed on your home, you should immediately call Peco and tell them to remove it.  These fires have been reported in other states after the meters were installed.

http://www.myfoxphilly.com/story/19289039/peco-halts-smart-meter-installation-program#.UCxNmtghRs1.facebook

For those that have already had the Smart Meter installed on their home, Peco will return, test the meter, and place a warning sign on the meter with a device that should a fire start, the meter will shut off.  New reports are that Peco has switched overnight to another provider for these meters, assuring the public that these will be safe. Are we to trust this company, the same one that put fire hazards on 186,000 homes in PA?

Now is the time to act!  The ball is in our court.  I will be trying to go up to Harrisburg in September to push to get legislation out of committee.  Maybe we are being given time to stop part of UN agenda 21.

Call PECO and tell them no to the "new technology" meters.

Thank you.

Activate: How to turn the 2012 election from a close call to a mandate

Last night, Glenn focused on the importance of commitment. He was the first to admit, a lot of last night's show was something you had heard before - but it's important to start at the beginning and to make sure you know what you believe before you get put into action. And tonight, Glenn revealed ways for you to really get moving!

Tonight, the focus of the show was "Activate" - and it was all about the election and how you can make sure that one way or another - 2012 is a year for a mandate for or against the progressives. And if you think it doesn't matter just take a look at what is happening right now in Wisconsin. Progressives and unions are doing everything they can to make sure that Walker loses. It's a microcosm to what is happening around the country, and Glenn thought it was so important that he recapped it on tonight's show (in under three minutes!):

Dear Friends,

We have 76 days left to stop the American Nation from becoming the Obama Nation.

If we give this president four more years, he will finish the job of remolding America into a hard-core keynesian state resembling some of the most economically dependent

Occupy Unmasked

I have some very exciting news! Citizens United Productions has just announced an all rights distribution deal for our newest film Occupy Unmasked with Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, owned by Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner. Magnet is giving the film a limited theatrical release with VOD in late September to be followed by the DVD release. I've attached the full press release at the bottom of this email.

While the Liberal establishment and mainstream media portray the Occupy Wall Street movement as organic and nonviolent, Occupy Unmasked reveals the sinister, organized, and highly orchestrated nature of its leaders and their number one goal: Not just to change government, but to destroy it.

Led by hugely influential conservative visionary, the late Andrew Breitbart, Occupy Unmasked delves deep beneath the surface of the Occupy movement to show its dark anarchist roots. Behind the largely naïve students and legitimately concerned citizens looking for answers stand those who advocate the use of violence, black bloc operations, and intimidation as protest tactics - the same tactics they used during the anti-war protests of the 1960's, anti-nuclear weapons protests of the 80's, WTO protests of the 90's, and the IMF protests of recent years.

Former leftists turned patriotic citizen journalists Brandon Darby, David Horowitz, Pam Keys, Anita MonCrief, Mandy Nagy, Lee Stranahan, and others take viewers into the Occupy camps around the country to see first-hand the truth of what is happening and who is at the heart of the movement. Exclusive footage and eyewitness accounts tell the story of the criminal activity and raw brutality in the camps - much of which has not been reported by the mainstream media.

Directed by Stephen K. Bannon (The Undefeated, Generation Zero), Occupy Unmasked is an eye-opening look at a startling movement that could have a dangerous impact on the future of America.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Magnet Releasing to Distribute Andrew Breitbart Doc OCCUPY UNMASKED

New York, August 6, 2012 - The Wagner/Cuban Company's Magnet Releasing announced today an all rights distribution deal for Citizens United Productions' documentary OCCUPY UNMASKED, one of the last projects featuring the late conservative icon Andrew Breitbart. OCCUPY UNMASKED was written and directed by award-winning director Stephen K. Bannon and produced by David N. Bossie. Magnet is giving the film a limited theatrical release day and date with VOD in late September.

"This film is controversial, and that's exactly the reason we want to ensure it can find its audience prior to the November elections," said Mark Cuban, co-owner of Magnet. "I look forward to our partnership with Citizens United Productions and to getting this film out to the masses."

OCCUPY UNMASKED takes viewers into the Occupy Wall Street camps around the country in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Portland, Denver and Oakland for an up-close look at what's happened there and who's at the heart of the movement, documenting criminal activity and raw brutality in the camps - much of which has not been reported by the mainstream media. In addition to Andrew Breitbart, the film features journalists Brandon Darby, David Horowitz, Pam Keys, Anita MonCrief, Mandy Nagy, and Lee Stranahan.

"I am proud to announce that Citizens United Productions is teaming up with Mark Cuban and Magnet to distribute OCCUPY UNMASKED, and elevate the film the Left does not want the American people to see," said Producer David N. Bossie. "This distribution deal will keep the groundbreaking work of the late conservative icon Andrew Breitbart alive for years to come."

"As a dear friend of Andrew's, I could not be more thrilled that this deal got completed and all Americans will have an opportunity to see one of Andrew Breitbart's final pieces of work," said writer/director Stephen K. Bannon. "This film is important because it sheds new light on the myth of the Occupy Wall Street movement. I know audiences across the country will be startled by what we uncovered in this explosive documentary."

The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq

Jul 18th, 2012

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet, The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.

The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.

Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.

Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.

The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.

The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

By allowing our attention to be focused exclusively on the danger and prevention of terrorism, we ignore the many other ways we are being attacked. Specifically, we are missing what our Islamist enemies call their 'civilization jihad' - a form of warfare that employs manipulative financial techniques, lawfare, infiltration of our civil institutions and government and insidious information dominance. Together, these have the effect of exploiting our liberties and governing structures against us, so that our leaders wind up imposing the very anti-American values that our enemies promote.

Welcome to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within - a 10-part, web-based video briefing that is designed to explain why and how this is happening.

It addresses a threat most Americans are unaware even exists within our country, let alone the degree of peril it represents.
The threat is the totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine its adherents call "shariah" and the organized, disciplined and increasingly successful efforts by such adherents-- most especially the Muslim Brotherhood-- to bring it here.

We are making this course available in the hope of encouraging, informing and broadening support for national efforts to defeat the insinuation into this country of shariah's anti-constitutional and seditious program.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization

Losing Our SonsCharles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.

The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

Bringing Medicaid into the Debate

Medicare is an emotionally charged program because it provides health insurance coverage for the elderly. But Medicaid covers America's poor and disabled-and no one wants to see them harmed, either.

However, like Medicare, Medicaid is also in desperate need of reform if it is to continue serving the people it was designed to serve. Nearly one-third of America's doctors are already opting out of treating Medicaid patients-because their costs often outweigh what the program pays for care.

States-which already have budget crises of their own-share the cost of Medicaid with the federal government. They can't afford to simply add more people to Medicaid, which is one of Obamacare's main ways to insure more people. (The Supreme Court's Obamacare decision gave states some breathing room when it ruled that Obamacare's Medicaid expansion must be optional for states.)

The program already covers 62.5 million people-about 20 percent of America's population-and federal spending on Medicaid has no limit. That's right-there are no limits on federal spending for Medicaid. But there are limits on American taxpayers' wallets.

Simply adding people to Medicaid should not be the goal. Instead, like other welfare reforms, the goal should be helping people while they're down-and helping them get back up.

For those who are on Medicaid because of low incomes, the program should be reformed to empower them. Medicaid dollars should follow the individual, so that beneficiaries can choose the coverage they want and participate in the private market like the rest of their fellow citizens. They deserve to have more control over their health care and more personalized options. The Heritage Foundation has outlined such a reform in its Saving the American Dream plan.

The Saving the American Dream plan starts by transitioning non-disabled individuals out of government-run Medicaid and into premium support, where they would have the same private health care options as others. "Premium support" simply means that the health care payment goes with the individual to the plan of his or her choice. For a low-income individual trying to get ahead, the premium support amount could be used to pay the employee's share of an employer plan or to purchase individual coverage.

For the low-income elderly, who are caught in a complex, bureaucratic combination of Medicare and Medicaid, the Saving the American Dream plan would provide a coordinated care model like Medicare Advantage, while allowing Medicaid to provide additional assistance as necessary. Again, the result would be more control for the individual over the health care dollars and decisions.

Finally, the plan would restore traditional Medicaid to a true safety net-intended to help those with disabilities-while providing greater flexibility to the states to address the complex needs of these populations.

Heritage's Nina Owcharenko outlines three crucial steps to Medicaid reform:

  1. Repeal Obamacare. As noted, one of the health care law's goals was significantly expanding Medicaid without offering any solid reforms to address its sustainability. Without repeal, the problems facing Medicaid and the rest of the health care system are extraordinary.

  1. Put Medicaid on a budget. Although states must balance their budgets, federal Medicaid spending has no limit. The more a state spends, the more federal taxpayers must pay out. Therefore, it is critical that federal Medicaid spending is put on a dependable and sustainable path. Block grants to the states, which would give them more flexibility in helping their populations, could be used for taking care of the disabled and elderly.

  1. Set core policy objectives. The policy objectives of Medicaid reform must be clear. It should establish patient-centered, market-based solutions that reduce dependence on government health care and improve care for the most vulnerable.

Medicaid needs reforms that will give America's poor and disabled the health coverage they need, without bankrupting taxpayers. This type of reform is possible, and the sooner we get started, the better.

Victory Center" on Facebook

-Gabriel Malor

Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

GOP Facebook

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on.

RedState Morning Briefing

For August 22, 2012

1. Just a Reminder: Nikki Haley Remains Awesome

The Myrtle Beach newspaper brings word to conservatives nationwide that Nikki Haley remains awesome.

The Governor, who had a series of vetoes overridden by the state legislature because she dared to cut spending, has also wielded her veto pen and seen the legislature back down recently. But, what's so awesome, is the tears shed by liberals. Get this - she, in the words of the newspaper, "unilaterally" dissolved "the S.C. Arts Commission and the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium."

She also drew a line in the sand over pork barrel spending in the state, pretty clearly telling the legislature that the good times aren't back yet and they need to not live high on the hog.

Just read this editorial and you get a great flavor of what's going on in South Carolina.

People is policy and conservatives rallied to a great person. The result? Great conservative policy coming out of the Governor's Mansion.

2. Obama assists Bain takeover at OMB and tries to hide it

It looks like President Obama is assisting in a friendly takeover of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), by Bain Capital.

As you may have heard, earlier this year Obama picked Jeff Zients to lead the OMB. You might not have heard that Zients worked at Bain from 1988-1990. The Zients White House biography did not originally admit that fact.

Now Obama has appointed another former Bain consultant, Boris Bershteyn, to head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), which is part of the OMB. Recognizing how awkward this is for Obama's reelection campaign, Bershteyn's tenure at Bain has been edited out of his official White House bio. This is an obvious and glaring attempt to hide Obama's friendly Bain takeover of the OMB.

3. DC Circuit Tosses Out EPA's Pollution Rule

Amidst Obama's inexorable war on American energy, consumers, jobs, and prosperity, his EPA is in the process of promulgating 4 new pollution rules that will bury the coal industry and "necessarily" raise the price of electricity on American households. They are the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule, the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards for Utilities (MACT), the Cooling Water Intake Structures regulation, and the Disposal of Coal Combustion residuals. The former two have already been finalized while the latter two are close behind. Today, the D.C. Circuit Court struck down the EPA's authority to implement the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule.

4. Radical Islam Joins the DNC

Starting at the end of this month the Democratic National Convention will open with a focus on Islam. 20,000 Muslims are expected to attend according to the Bureau of Indigenous Muslim Affairs (BIMA), the national Muslim American non-profit coordinating the two days of events they claim are non-political. "Jumah at the DNC" begins August 29 and will start with a Friday afternoon jummah prayer followed by other unnamed programs and events, leading up to the Islamic Regal Banquet. The following day will be an all day Islamic Cultural and Fun Fest which will include discussions on the topics of Islamaphobia, Anti-Shariah, Middle Eastern Crisis, Patriot Act, National Defense Authorization Act and more. The purpose, according to BIMA, is to attract national and international attention to the plight of American Muslims and to hold political parties accountable for issues that affect them. However, not all Muslims feel that BIMA represents them and M. Zuhdi Jasser M.D., Founder and President of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, has expressed serious concerns.

  Florida Family Association

Attention Bay Area Schools Florida Family Association hopes to raise $4,072 for a billboard aimed at the only school district in Florida and perhaps the nation that knowingly permits CAIR officials to instruct students about Islam and Sharia.

Click here if you can make a donation exclusively for this billboard campaign.

The Hillsborough County School Board in Tampa Florida appears to be the only school district in Florida and perhaps the nation which will knowingly allows Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR) officials to instruct students regarding Islam and Sharia law. Tragically, board members have no problem with CAIR officials giving their biased version of "Sharia", "Human Rights and Islam" and "Women and Islam in different countries" to hundreds of students at Steinbrenner High School funded by taxpayer dollars.  A condensed history of this issue is posted at the end of this article.

Florida Family Association, whose public records request provided the credibility to first break the story, is preparing a billboard campaign aimed at confronting the situation head on.  All funds raised through this request will be used exclusively for this campaign.  The billboard campaign will:

  • Be seen by 104,000 vehicles daily according to DOT traffic counts.
  • Be hard to miss since it is the only major billboard for miles.
  • Be located on the primary route to Steinbrenner High School.
  • Significantly increase the likelihood that Florida Family Association will learn if and when teachers invite CAIR officials to address students.
  • Educate thousands of people who visit WelcometoTampaFL.org regarding this issue, the Sharia threat to America public policy and the Islamization taking place in Tampa.
  • Hopefully significantly decrease the likelihood of pro-Sharia groups having access to students.

If Florida Family Association learns and verifies that a teacher has invited a CAIR official or other Muslim Brotherhood front organization official to address students on taxpayer funded property Florida Family Association will:

  • Organize a peaceful, educationally based protest in front of the school.
  • Hand out educational fliers to parents dropping off their children for class.
  • Rent the school auditorium for a special event to educate the community regarding the truth about Islam being mostly a political movement with a religious flavor.

Florida Family Association has submitted the billboard to an outdoor advertising company which approved the final content and reserved the requested location.  To provide accountability as Florida Family Association does for all major designated fundraising requests a copy of the contract including the $3,400 rental, $672 art cost, location, traffic count and other information will be posted here after the ad copy has been placed on the billboard on September 4, 2012.   Placing this information online prior to September 4, 2012 may cause unnecessary pressure by pro-Sharia groups directed at the outdoor advertising company.  The billboard will initially stay up for 4 weeks.

CAIR is using bullying tactics across the United States to intimidate patriotic minded people out of their First Amendment right to oppose Islamization of America.  We need to counter that intimidation.

Your gift will help us do that.  Click here to make a confidential, tax deductible donation or mail your gift to Florida Family Association (FFA), PO Box 46547, Tampa, FL 33646-0105.

Thank you for your support.

ISSUE HISTORY

The Tampa Bay Times reported on January 10, 2012 "Florida Family Association's David Caton protests Muslim speaker's visits to Hillsborough school."

Florida Family Association's public records request which the school district complied with on December 14, 2011 (the beginning of Christmas break) produced the proof that CAIR officials made presentations to students at Steinbrenner High School in Tampa.
Since that time Florida Family Association sent out three email alerts and posted an online article which reported that Hillsborough County School Board members were allowing CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations) officials to indoctrinate school children with propaganda including their version of Sharia law.

Each school board member and the district superintendent received approximately 10,000 emails opposing CAIR officials from addressing students.  That number does not include emails these officials have received from individuals and other groups apart from Florida Family Association.  Florida Family Association continues to this day to submit public records requests regarding this issue.

Several organizations including local Tea Party leaders challenged the Hillsborough County School Board on February 14, 2012 to stop local CAIR officials from addressing students. The Tampa Bay Times reported in part "The issue arose late last year when conservative activist David Caton called attention to a visit to Steinbrenner High by Hassan Shibly, executive director of the Tampa-based Islamic group."  Click here to read report in The Tampa Bay Times.

  Act for America

Feds inconsistent on definition of "terrorism"

The shooting at the Sikh temple qualifies as "terrorism."

The Ft. Hood massacre and the murder of a soldier at an Army recruiting center do not.

That's according to the Obama administration (see the Fox News article below, highlights added).

This inconsistency demonstrates that this administration is consistent about one thing: allowing political correctness to dictate how it deals with Islamic terrorism.

Fox News

Questions raised over feds' consistency on 'terrorism' definition in wake of shootings

Questions are being raised about the consistency of the government's standard for what qualifies as "terrorism," as recent high-profile shootings bear that label while tragedies like the Fort Hood massacre do not.

According to the Patriot Act, domestic terrorism is defined as an act of violence that is intended to "intimidate or coerce a civilian population, to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion or to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping."

The shooting earlier this month at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin where six were killed by an alleged neo-Nazi military veteran was publicly described by the attorney general as an act of terrorism motivated by hate.

"That is precisely -- precisely what happened here. An act of terrorism, an act of hatred, a hate crime that is anathema to the founding principles of our nation and to who we are as an American people," Attorney General Eric Holder said Aug. 10.

Obama Threatens Force Against Syria

Published: August 20, 2012

WASHINGTON - President Obama warned Syria on Monday that it would face American military intervention if there were signs that its arsenal of unconventional weapons was being moved or prepared for use. It was Mr. Obama's first direct threat of force against Syria, as he has resisted being drawn into the bloody 18-month rebellion.

The president's warning raises the pressure on President Bashar al-Assad, whom Mr. Obama again called on to relinquish power. And it underscores the deepening alarm among American officials that, as Syria sinks further into civil war, its unconventional weapons could be seized by radical forces tied to terrorist groups like Hezbollah or Al Qaeda.

The warning brings Mr. Obama, who has brushed aside calls to impose a no-fly zone or to arm the Syrian rebels, a step closer to direct American engagement. The specter of unconventional weapons being loosed in the heart of the Arab world, he said, would upend his calculation that military intervention would only worsen the situation.

Another Temporary Budget: Don't Blame "Broken" Process
Lawmakers no longer miss deadlines; they deliberately ignore them. They have degraded budgeting into a jumble of ad hoc, spend-as-you-go measures nagging lawmakers' attention year-round.

The Real Iceberg: Mandatory Spending is the Threat that Could Sink US

Mandatory spending-primarily entitlements like Medicare and interest-is set on budgetary autopilot, growing without Congressional debate. It has increased almost six times faster than discretionary spending, including defense, which is the part of federal spending subject to annual budgets.

Why Is Israel More Prosperous than the Palestinians?
Gloria Center - Global Research in International Affairs

By Barry Rubin August 10, 2012

Israel_Palestine_Flag In almost 40 years of studying these issues, I've never seen a better case study of mass media bias and knee-jerk narrowness than an aspect of the current flap about what presidential candidate Mitt Romney said during his trip to Israel. I'm going to focus on a single point because it brings this problem into sharp focus.

If you truly understand what you are about to read, I don't see how you can accord most of the mass media any credibility when it comes to Israel ever again. Briefly, Romney mentioned the gap between the Israeli and Palestinian economies - ironically, he vastly understated the gap - and attributed it to "culture," by which he meant, as Romney has said elsewhere, such things as democracy, individual liberty, free enterprise, and the rule of law.

But I'm not talking about Romney here or the media's critique of him. What is interesting is this: How do you explain the reason why Israel is so more advanced in terms of economy, technology, and living standards? The media generally rejected Romney's explanation and pretty much all made the same point. To quote the Associated Press story, that was:

Comparison of the two economies did not take into account the stifling effect the Israeli occupation has had on the Palestinian economy in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem-areas Israel captured in 1967 where the Palestinians hope to establish a state.

In the West Bank, Palestinians have only limited self-rule. Israel controls all border crossings in and out of the territory, and continues to restrict Palestinian trade and movement. Israel annexed east Jerusalem in 1967, but has invested much less heavily there than in Jewish west Jerusalem.

Or, in other words, it's all Israel's fault. Yet in choosing to blame Israel, the media generally showed no interest at all in additional factors which are equally, or far more, valid.

Obama Adds Military Heroes to 'Enemies List'

by Breitbart News

President Barack Obama has added military heroes to his "enemies list," singling out veterans' groups such as Special Operations for America and Veterans for a Strong America on his campaign website, much as he singled out donors to Republican rival Mitt Romney for attack. Several veterans' groups have spoken out against the Obama administration's habit of taking credit for the Osama bin Laden raid and leaking military secrets for political gain--so the Obama campaign is trying to shoot the messenger.

The charge made by the Obama campaign is that the veterans' groups are "Swift Boat 2.0"--referring to the group that launched a series of ads (never refuted) in 2008 contesting claims by then-Democrat presidential candidate John Kerry about his war record. Left-wing groups aligned with the Obama administration have even gone so far as to call the U.S. Navy Seals "gutless" for their participation in criticism of Obama.

The Scarecrow of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

It is not completely impossible that in a moment of electoral desperation, Joseph Robinette Biden Jr will be called into a private meeting with Valerie Jarrett and David Axelrod and told that it's time for him to announce that he wants to spend more time with his family. But it's not very likely.

The chief function of a Vice President is making the President look good and by that measure Joe Biden is one of the best vice presidents who ever lived. The rule of thumb is that the more incompetent the man at the top is, the more of a buffoon the man just below him needs to be to make him look good. And again Biden does this job brilliantly.

James Monroe put as many political rivals in his cabinet as possible, but Barack Hussein Obama and the people around him are too insecure and paranoid to do such a thing. Monroe might have presided over the Era of Good Feeling, but the age of O is the Era of Bad Feelings. Hillary Clinton was never going to be on the ticket. Even giving her the Secretary of State position would never have been an option if it had not been a matter of pure survival, with the Obamas terrified of losing moderate Democrats to McCain.

The "youth vote" is turning away from Obama

Aug 21, 2012 06:13 am | Coach Collins

By Emma Karlen, staff writer

The numbers surrounding the "youth vote" - where it is likely to go and how small it is likely to be - spell trouble for Barack Obama.

1)  In 2008 51% of eligible voters 18 to 29 showed up to vote. They represented 18% of the total vote and supported Barack Obama over John McCain 66/34. Nevertheless, history tells us that when it actually come down to showing up at the polls to vote this group has a track record of falling short of their "declared" numbers. In other words the "youth voters" can talk a good game but often don't deliver.  This is why the 58% who say they intend to vote combined with new polling data on how they intend to vote has to be alarming to Team Obama.

Another trip wire presented by the "youth vote" is the sizable aversion to affirmative action ... Continue Reading:The "youth vote" is turning away from Obama

American Minute August 20

Aug 20, 2012 06:13 pm | Coach Collins

By Bill Federer, staff writer

300,000 miles on horseback, from the Atlantic to the Appalachians, from Maine to the Gulf of Mexico, for 45 years, he spread the gospel.
This was Francis Asbury, Methodist Circuit riding preacher who was born AUGUST 20, 1745.
When the Revolution started, he refused to return to England: "I can by no means agree to leave such a field for gathering souls to Christ as we have in America."
He befriended Richard Bassett, a signer of the U.S. Constitution, who converted, freed his slaves and paid them as hired labor.
Francis Asbury dedicated the first African Methodist Episcopal Church and met personally with George Washington, congratulating him on his election.
In 1785, Asbury separated the Methodist movement from the Episcopal Church into its own denomination. This resulted in the Episcopal members of Virginia's Assembly losing their majority and the next year, the Episcopal Church was disestablished as Virginia's ... "The Nation" is so frightened of Paul Ryan it can't think straight

Aug 20, 2012 01:13 pm | Coach Collins

By Kevin "Coach" Collins

I'll bet you didn't know that conservative enthusiasm for the Mitt Romney Paul Ryan ticket is an illusion; or that it is actually the Republicans that steal elections through manipulation of voter turnout using (gulp!) photo ID!

How about this - those polls you see showing voters like Romney/Ryan's economic plans - THEY ARE ALL FAKE! The Hundreds  of thousands of people going to Chick-fil-A? - not real! Because the CFA buildings are all alike the CONSERVATIVE news media showed us B roll of the same 34 customers telling us they were seen all across the country!

Because of his Medicare plan down ballot Republican are afraid to run with Paul Ryan on the top of their ticket (and presumably down ballot Democrats will be falling all over themselves to have Barack Obama show up and campaign for them - just as they did in the 2010 election cycle which actually never happened and ... Labor Department spends stimulus funds for ads during Olbermann, Maddow shows
Contract shows no new jobs were created

The Washington Times | By Jim McElhatton | August 21, 2012

Labor Department spends stimulus funds The Labor Department paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal stimulus funds to a public relations firm to run more than 100 commercials touting the Obama administration's "green training" job efforts on two MSNBC cable shows, records show.

The commercials ran on MSNBC on shows hosted by Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann in 2009, but the contract didn't report any jobs created, according to records reviewed recently by The Washington Times.

Spending reports under the federal Recovery Act show $495,000 paid to McNeely Pigott & Fox Public Relations LLC, which the Labor Department hired to raise awareness "among employers and influencers about the [Job Corps] program's existing and new training initiatives in high growth and environmentally friendly career areas" as well as spreading the word to prospective Job Corps enrollees.

Romney's VP Pick Changes the Race

August 20, 2012

The Foundation

"I suppose, indeed, that in public life, a man whose political principles have any decided character and who has energy enough to give them effect must always expect to encounter political hostility from those of adverse principles." --Thomas Jefferson

Political Futures

2012-08-20-brief

"In 'Reflections on the Revolution in France,' [Edmund Burke] wrote, 'Circumstances (which with some gentlemen pass for nothing) give in reality to every political principle its distinguishing color and discriminating effect. The circumstances are what render every civil and political scheme beneficial or noxious to mankind.' That's what Republicans and especially conservatives in this heady moment have to keep in mind: the circumstances. ... Republicans know how meaningful this campaign became when [Paul] Ryan was picked [as Mitt Romney's running mate]: He changed its subject matter just by showing up. And he is right in his central insight, which is his central political reason for being: America, to be strong again, must get its spending and revenues more closely aligned. ... But Republicans must understand, also, that the race probably just became more of an uphill battle, because Paul Ryan has been very specific about what must and can be done. ... Republicans should keep this picture in mind. There's a woman on a porch in eastern Ohio and she has a dog and likes guns and supports the NRA and sees herself as more or less conservative. She assumed she'd vote for Romney and not that big loser in the White House. But she's hearing about Ryan and she's hearing the word 'cuts.' She knows spending is out of control and she's worried about deficits and debt. But she's on disability and her husband's illness is being handled by Medicare, and she's wondering: 'Do these guys really understand my life? Do they know how it is for us?' ... Ryan is associated with the word cutting. Republicans will have to make people believe the word to associate with him is 'saving'.... Republicans have just a few weeks to get across ... that they're trying to save Medicare, not kill it, that they're the lifeguard, not the shark. ... An old cliché of politics has never been truer: 'They don't care what you know unless they know that you care.' Or, it's the circumstances, stupid." --columnist Peggy Noonan

A Divided Convention Splits Party

Next week Republicans will flock to Tampa to nominate Mitt Romney, and the following week Democrats will gather in Charlotte  to renominate President Obama. But no one expects a brokered convention to nominate Rick Santorum or Hillary Clinton for President. The primary winners are merely taking a victory lap.

These conventions will be downright dull compared to the 1912 Republican Convention in Chicago. Then, a thousand policemen were on hand to stroll the aisles of the convention, and strands of barbed wire lay concealed beneath the bunting on the speaker's platform to keep disgruntled delegates from charging the stage. The Governor was prepared to call out the National Guard if the riotous and fiercely antagonistic Republicans got out of hand.

The very nature of our Constitution and our democracy was at stake, as William Schambra explains in a new First Principles essay from The Heritage Foundation.

On one side was Teddy Roosevelt, who ran for President that year aiming to reshape American democracy. He thrashed lackluster incumbent William Howard Taft  in the primary contests, even in Taft's home state of Ohio. "I believe in pure democracy," Roosevelt affirmed his speech at the Ohio Constitutional Convention, and therefore endorsed "certain governmental devices which will make the representatives of the people more easily and certainly responsible to the people's will." These included the initiative, the referendum, the recall (including recall of judges), the direct election of U.S. Senators, and the popular recall of judicial decisions.

On the other side were Taft (Roosevelt's hand-picked successor in the White House just four years earlier) and the Republican leadership including Sens. Elihu Root of New York and Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts. They stood for the Constitution. Root and Lodge were great admirers and long-time friends of Roosevelt, but TR's Columbus speech had sent shock waves through the Republican Party: his proposals amounted to radical constitutional revision that threatened to undermine the institutions of government. Therefore, Root, Lodge and Taft were determined to deny Roosevelt the nomination at the 1912 Republican convention.

In the first major vote of the convention-and the one that would accurately predict all that would follow-Elihu Root defeated Roosevelt's candidate, Wisconsin Governor Frances McGovern, by the slim margin of 558 to 502 to be elected chairman of the convention. The Roosevelt delegates shook the hall with outrage.

Unlike the typically bland convention keynote speeches designed to smooth feathers ruffled by the nominating contest and unite the party for the main event in November, Root's keynote was a call to constitutional conservatism.

The Republican Party in particular, Root argued, was obliged to defend the Constitution, since it had been "born in protest against the extension of a system of human slavery approved and maintained by majorities." It should remain the party of Abraham Lincoln, who had declared in his First Inaugural Address that "a majority held in restraint by constitutional checks and limitations...is the only true sovereign of a free people." Our duty, Root concluded, was not to reform the constitutional system, but to "humbly and reverently seek for strength and wisdom to abide by the principles of the Constitution against the days of our temptation and weakness."

By preventing TR from winning the Republican nomination, these first conservatives kept him from enjoying access to the Republican Party's magnificent electoral machinery, which would almost certainly have returned him to office committed to a platform of radical constitutional reform. But it also meant losing the general election. Taft won only two states, Utah and Vermont, garnering a mere 23.2 percent of the popular vote. TR came in second, and Democrat Woodrow Wilson became President.

"The result of the Convention was more important than the question of the election" Root said. Losing the general election did not supplant their "duty to hold the Republican Party firmly to the support of our constitutional system. Worse things can happen to a party than to be defeated."

Worse indeed.

Root, Lodge, and Taft sacrificed their friendship with TR and victory in the general election to save the Constitution from TR's proposed overhaul. Constitutional conservatism began with saving the Republican Party from Teddy Roosevelt. It continues with the fight to save America from a deeper descent into progressivism. Ahead is a long, slow process of restoring the principles of the American Founding. But we have more than three men in Chicago. Meet the intellectual heirs of Messrs. Root, Lodge, and Taft: the Tea Party Movement.

Heritage Exposes $63 Million in Waste at Agriculture Department

by Nathaniel Ward

The Heritage Foundation's investigative reporting team continues to expose big government waste.

Heritage's Lachlan Markay got the scoop last week

A report from the Agriculture Department's Inspector General has revealed some stunning examples of financial waste in the Department's nascent technology security efforts, which have mismanaged about $63 million in taxpayer funding.
Among the IG's findings: the USDA spent more than $2 million on an internship program that only hired one full-time intern, $3 million on technology hardware that was never used, and $235,000 on a project that was later canceled due to redundancy.

What do you think? How can government mismanagement like this be avoided?

"Without a heritage... every generation starts over." Thanks to the support of Heritage Foundation Members, 73 young conservatives were able to spend their summer working with Heritage experts on the day's most pressing issues. During the three-month internship program, they gained a better understanding of our nation's first principles and learned important career skills.

Renee Davis, a summer intern from the University of Dallas, who spent the summer as the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation Intern in the B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics explains her positive Heritage experience: "It is no accident that The Heritage Foundation is widely regarded as THE place to be as a young conservative-Heritage equips its interns with valuable personal, professional, and practical experience. Thank you for making this possible with your support!"

Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-WI) budget proposal, including its reforms to Medicare, have come under renewed assault over the last week.

But far from breaking promises to seniors, Heritage Foundation health care expert Nina Owcharenko argues, Ryan's proposal is the only way to save Medicare. Ryan's medicare proposal is broadly similar to Heritage's Saving the American Dream plan.

Read the whole article on the US News website, and be sure to vote up Owcharenko's article.

Romney urges Akin to bow out

With the Missouri dropout deadline fast approaching, Mitt Romney has added his voice to those calling on Todd Akin to withdraw from the Senate race. Romney alluded to his earlier criticism of Akin's rape remark and added that today, Missouri citizens have said Akin should withdraw. "I think he should accept their counsel and withdraw from the race," Romney stated.

Romney probably was referring to former or current Missouri Senators Danforth, Bond, Talent, and Blunt, all of whom say that Akin should bow out. Unfortunately, there is little reason to believe that Akin will be more inclined to listen to Romney than to the Missouri Republicans.

Will Michigan Be Competitive?

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 12:34 PM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

Mitt Romney certainly doesn't need Michigan to win in November, but it is doubtful that Barack Obama can get to 270 without Michigan's 16 electoral votes. So this poll by Foster McCollum White Baydoun represents another leak in the dyke that Obama will have to try to plug. Before getting to the results, note that FMWB is a Michigan consulting, lobbying and polling firm that appears to have a mostly-Democratic clientele. The poll sampled 1,733 respondents and did assess likely vs. registered voters, although it is not clear how that differentiation is reflected in the results.

The key finding:

The poll found that Paul Ryan's selection is a plus for the Republicans:

The pollsters tried to sway respondents away from Ryan's budget proposals with this one-sided description:

Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan has been selected as the Republican vice presidential nominee. Congressman Ryan has proposed federal budgets that drastically cut the federal deficit, cuts taxes on job creators and proposes the reform of Medicare and Social Security benefits. The Tea Party and business groups support Ryan's budget as fiscally responsible, reducing the size and cost of unsustainable programs. Democrats, senior citizens groups and a number of economists oppose Ryan's budget proposal citing it gives the richest Americans a tax cut, privatizes Social Security and Medicare and will have a negative effect on the economy. Do you support Congressman Ryan's budget plan for the federal government?

But a plurality of respondents didn't take the bait:

BS detectors must have been going off all across the State of Michigan.

The pollsters sum up their results:

In spite of national criticism of the Ryan selection and budget plan, our findings suggest that Michigan voters are viewing both as positives for Romney. 36.11% of Michigan voters are more likely to vote for Romney because of the Paul Ryan selection while only 27.90% are less likely to vote for Romney. ...

"The data prompts further study by the Obama team, Democratic Party and related supporters into the declining support for the President in what was a safe state for him," stated Attorney Tarek Baydoun, statistical analyst for Foster McCollum White Baydoun. "In a state with a significant senior citizen voting population, the overall support for Congressman Ryan's budget plan must be very troubling for the President and his team."

Additionally, the polling data suggests a dip in interest among voters in Democratic leaning regions (Southeastern Michigan, the Thumb Region and Major 17 County Cluster) Congressional Districts (5th, 13th and 14th) and Minority voters. This dip in interest would not only hurt President Obama, but also Democratic down ballot candidates and ballot initiatives.

Ouch. All of this is as it should be, given Obama's terrible record. I suspect that Michigan will not be the last state that unexpectedly proves competitive.

Akin tells Huckabee he's staying in race.

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 12:24 PM PDT

(Paul Mirengoff)

Rep. Todd Akin said on Mike Huckabee's radio show that he will remain in the Missouri Senate race. That decision, if Akin adheres to it, will move the Missouri race from probable Republican pickup to probable Democratic retention, I would think.

Nonetheless, the decision is understandable from Akin's point of view, and therefore not surprising. Republicans are asking Akin to give up a shot at the U.S. Senate for the good of the Party and of the country. Nothing I know about Akin suggests that he sees any appeal in this proposition.

Did Huckabee try to persuade Akin to quit? I hope so. It was Huckabee whose backing helped put this loose cannon in a position potentially to cost Republicans control of the Senate.

Punch Back Twice As Hard!

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 11:46 AM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

This is a day when Republicans need cheering up, so let's note the fact that we have an excellent RNC Chairman in Reince Priebus. He is smart, aggressive and effective-not only that, he reads InstaPundit! Told by a reporter that Joe Biden is planning on visiting Tampa early next week, Priebus responded beautifully:

"I think it's pretty common among parties to play with each other's conventions, and we'll have a pretty big presence in Charlotte as well," Priebus said. "The nice thing about going first is that whatever they do to us, we can do ten times over to them."

Does that mean that Romney may counter-program the Democratic convention in Charlotte next month? Priebus replied "You never know where we are going to be."

"I'm a big believer in: if they punch us, we put on the brass knuckles and punch back," he added.

That is music to my ears!

Chronicles of Ineptitude, Chapter 1

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 11:03 AM PDT

(Steven Hayward)

I'm starting to think Power Line needs a periodic omnibus "Chronicles of Ineptitude" to go along with the weekly Green Weenie Award, as there are so many stay stories of foolishness and failure that don't quite deserve a singular post, but can add up to a worthwhile short roundup now and then.  If it becomes a regular feature, perhaps I'll call it the Power Line Todd Akin Memorial Ineptitude Award.   (Not to worry-there'll be a whole separate thread just for California.)

Sun setting on Mexican oil?

First off, oil.  As everyone paying attention knows, oil production is soaring in the U.S., Brazil, and other places where new technology is revitalizing old fields and making previous difficult fields economically feasible.  Everywhere, that is, except Mexico, where oil production continues to slide despite huge reserves.  At current rates of decline, Mexico may have to import oil by the year 2020, which would be like Thailand having to import rice.  The problem is underinvestment, and the refusal of Mexico's government-owned oil industry (PEMEX) to allow foreign oil companies to enter the market in joint ventures.  Oil industry experts have been watching the Mexican foolishness for many years; as one industry watcher put it to me about five year ago, "Someday, when they pump the last barrel out, someone at PEMEX will pull out an old phonograph, and spin up a scratchy LP of Sinatra singing, 'I Did It My Way!'"

But this has consequences as Mexico is one of the largest foreign suppliers of oil to the U.S., and if they lived up to their potential, could be an important part of making North America the world's new hydrocarbon energy center.  Maybe when the government revenues from oil dry up enough they'll change their mind.

Second, electric cars.  More epic fail.  Another ironically named Fisker Karma has caught fire, leading to the third recall of the vehicles.  Maybe electric cars will work adequately some day, and the Fisker Karma (retail cost: $102,000) will be remembered as the Ford Pinto of the new generation of electrics.  Now that would be karma.

Finally (for now), our friends in Germany, who are seeing coal consumption go up because of their precipitous decision to shut down nuclear power, are facing more problems from wind power.  Seems that the intermittency of wind power-not exactly an unknown problem-is causing instability in the electric grid, and some key German industrial companies are screaming about the economic cost and threatening to relocate out of the country.  (Where? Greece??)  Der Spiegel reports:

The problem is that wind and solar farms just don't deliver the same amount of continuous electricity compared with nuclear and gas-fired power plants. To match traditional energy sources, grid operators must be able to exactly predict how strong the wind will blow or the sun will shine.

But such an exact prediction is difficult. Even when grid operators are off by just a few percentage points, voltage in the grid slackens. That has no affect on normal household appliances, such as vacuum cleaners and coffee machines. But for high-performance computers, for example, outages lasting even just a millisecond can quickly trigger system failures.

A survey of members of the Association of German Industrial Energy Companies (VIK) revealed that the number of short interruptions to the German electricity grid has grown by 29 percent in the past three years. Over the same time period, the number of service failures has grown 31 percent, and almost half of those failures have led to production stoppages. Damages have ranged between €10,000 and hundreds of thousands of euros, according to company information.

Thank goodness dolphins are holding up the latest expansion of German wind power, as noted here yesterday.  More to the point, could grid instability be coming soon to the U.S.?

COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 77 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS

Missouri Fiasco

You have probably heard about the mess in Missouri. If you have been on vacation or distracted in these lazy summer days, let me give you a brief recap.

During a weekend interview, Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) attempted to defend his "no exceptions" position on abortion when asked whether abortions should be legal in the case of rape. Akin's answer was inarticulate at best. His comment about "legitimate rape" appeared to split hairs as to what rape is. His comments were a gift to our political enemies.

The Democrats and the media attack machine pounced. During an afternoon press conference, Barack Obama tried to resurrect the "GOP war on women" theme by linking Akin's remarks to the Romney/Ryan ticket. The political fallout was immediate. A Senate race that had been considered a likely GOP pick-up is now a dead heat. Romney repudiated Akin's comments, as did GOP candidates across the country.

In the days leading up to the primary, incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and her Democrat allies spent well over $1 million portraying Akin as too conservative, knowing it would help him in the GOP primary. Democrats believed Akin was the weakest Republican in the race and the easiest to portray as an extremist in the general election. Having gotten her preferred opponent, she is now stirring dissention among conservatives by suggesting it would be an insult to the voters if the GOP pushed the primary winner out of the race. That, my friends, is how the political game is played.

What is so breathtaking to me is why our candidates make these kinds of errors. If you believe in no exceptions on abortion and if you are running in a critical Senate race, you have to be prepared to deal with the worst possible questions, because they will come up. It's not fair, but Republicans only get one strike and they are out.

I know some conservative, pro-life groups are rallying to Akin's defense. But the Republican Party of Missouri is among the most conservative in the country, and according to one recent poll 64% of self-identified Republicans disagreed -- and 51% strongly disagreed -- with what Akin said. His primary opponents were both pro-life and both were leading McCaskill in the polls.

Let me point out what should be obvious. If you are pro-life and believe in religious liberty, your number one priority should be to get rid of Obamacare. The only way we get rid of Obamacare is if the Romney/Ryan ticket wins, we keep the House and take over the Senate.

If we lose the Missouri Senate race, the odds of us taking the Senate are long at best. Rep. Akin should be thinking and praying about that as he considers what do next. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, National Review and other top Republicans are urging Rep. Akin to do the right thing for the sake of the greater cause.

The Bigger Problem

Americans who believe, as I do, that unborn children should be protected under our laws have overwhelmingly made their home in the Republican Party. Likewise, those who believe in abortion-on-demand run the national Democrat Party.

On balance poll after poll shows that the American public is closer to the pro-life position than the pro-abortion position. You would not know that, however, from watching the national debate. The GOP establishment tries to avoid talking about the right to life and other social issues. Democrats, on the other hand, repeatedly and boldly use the issue to win over suburban women.

As a result, the left gets to choose the specific "field of battle." Usually they seize on something like the Akin incident to paint our side as anti-women extremists. That is where we are now -- on the defensive and reeling from the powerful media, left-wing attack. The debate isn't even about abortion. Akin and the GOP are being accused of being insensitive to rape. Akin's comments were insensitive, which he admits, and now we are paying the price.

It doesn't have to be this way. We are not the extremists in the abortion debate -- our Democrat opponents are! Their view that abortion should be legal in all cases in whatever month of pregnancy is a view held by only a small sliver of voters.

Americans don't want to pay for abortions, but they are forced to under Obamacare. They don't believe minor children should be taken for abortions without parental knowledge, but Democrats have pushed that agenda in every city and state they control.

And Americans certainly don't support disposing of a newborn baby who survives an abortion. But Barack Obama opposed legislation in Illinois to ensure that such babies received medical treatment.

Yesterday, Obama said "rape is rape." Yes it is, and it is a terrible crime. That is why Republicans and conservatives support tough sentences for rapists. Why are Democrats soft on tough anti-crime legislation? Democrats insist on giving hundreds of millions of your hard-earned tax dollars to Planned Parenthood, even though its facilities have repeatedly refused to report evidence of statutory rape when young teen-age girls are brought in for abortions by the 18 and 20 year-old men who impregnated them.

Soft on rape? Bill Clinton has a prime speaking slot at the Democrat National Convention. Several women have accused him of rape, and the Democrat Party destroyed those women to defend the "Man from Hope."

The GOP is being courageous right now by aggressively defending the need to reform Medicare. It is a risky issue. Republicans also need to find their voices when it comes to the sanctity of life and the defense of normal marriage -- issues easier to defend if you actually spend time on understanding the arguments. If it fails to do that, the GOP will find itself in more messes like the one in Missouri, inspiring its enemies while demoralizing its own supporters.

Biden To Tampa?

There are reports today that Secret Service agents in Tampa, Florida, have identified themselves as members of Vice President Joe Biden's advance team. If the reports are true there are only two possibilities.

One, it shows the aggressive nature of Obama's campaign to have Biden at the Republican National Convention holding press conferences in order to steal the GOP's thunder.

Or, two, which is equally possible given the confusion the vice president has displayed recently, Biden thinks the Democratic National Convention is in Tampa, not Charlotte, North Carolina!

COMMENTARY:

The New World Disorder
By Patrick J. Buchanan
The bipolar world of the Cold War is history. The new world order, however, is not the One World dreamed of by Wilsonian idealists. It is a Balkanizing world where race, tribe, culture and creed matter most, and democracy is seen not as an end in itself but as a means to an end - the accretion of power by one's own kind to achieve one's own dreams.

Educational Lunacy
By Walter E. Williams
If I were a Klansman, wanting to sabotage black education, I couldn't find better allies than education establishment liberals and officials in the Obama administration, especially Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who in March 2010 announced that his department was "going to reinvigorate civil rights enforcement." For Duncan, the civil rights issue was that black elementary and high school students are disciplined at a higher rate than whites.

Oh My Akin Back
By Rich Galen
In just 18 words, Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) derailed his race for the U.S. Senate -- a race he was favored to win -- and quite possibly handed control of the Senate back to the Democrats next January.

The New Face of Health Care -- the IRS

This column by ACRU General Counsel and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy (CCPP) Peter Ferrara was published August 17, 2012 on The American Spectator website.

When President Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA, aka "Obamacare") goes fully into effect in 2014, the American people will only then begin to see the implications of its thorough government takeover of health care, in all its glory. But what they are not expecting is the massively expanded role of the Internal Revenue Service ("IRS") in our lives, as the IRS is the chief agency responsible for enforcing the Act.

That is explained in a new paper by Dan Pilla, just published by the Heartland Institute, "Implementing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act." Pilla is a tax litigation consultant and a national leader in taxpayer rights defense, authoring 11 books on IRS defense strategies. His new paper explains "how the IRS can be expected to play an ever-growing role in your life and in the day-to-day affairs of every business in the nation as the tentacles of the PPACA wrap themselves around the most important and personal elements of your life."

Weighing 'Hate' on Uneven Scales

This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published August 17, 2012 on The Washington Times website.

When a man shot and wounded security guard Leo Johnson at the Family Research Council (FRC) on Wednesday morning, the shooter left little doubt why.

According to the FBI, Floyd Lee Corkins II fired a 9 mm Sig Sauer handgun in the lobby of the Washington-based pro-family group. He also had 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in his backpack, plus 50 rounds of ammunition. According to Fox News, he said as Mr. Johnson disarmed him: "Don't shoot me, it was not about you, it was what this place stands for."

The motto of the Family Research Council, where I worked for 10 years and where we helped draft the federal Defense of Marriage Act, is "Faith, Family and Freedom," which is over the building's entrance.

ACLU Slams Paul Ryan as Foe of 'Civil Rights'

This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published August 16, 2012 on The Daily Caller website.

Almost immediately after Mitt Romney announced that he'd picked Paul Ryan to be his running mate, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) released a report branding the Wisconsin congressman as an opponent of civil rights.

What the ACLU means is that Ryan opposes the bizarre perversion of civil rights that the progressive left has conjured over the past few decades.

Ryan, the ACLU charges, has "almost uniformly harmful views on five key civil liberties issues": immigration, gay marriage, abortion, waterboarding and voter ID laws.
