At its present rate of enrichment, Iran will have 250 kilograms of 20-percent grade uranium, exactly enough to build its first nuclear bomb, in roughly six weeks, and two-to- four bombs by early 2013, debkafile's military and intelligence sources report. Hence the leak by an unnamed Israeli security source Sunday, Aug. 12, disclosing Iran's progress in developing the detonator and fuses for a nuclear warhead which can be fitted onto Shehab-3 ballistic missiles capable of reaching Israel.
Since 20 percent refined uranium is a short jump to weapons grade fuel, Iran will have the capability and materials for building an operational nuclear bomb by approximately October 1.
This knowledge is not news to US President Barack Obama, Saudi King Abdullah, Syrian ruler Bashar Assad, or Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu - and certainly not to Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Netanyahu's comment at the opening of the weekly cabinet meeting Sunday: "All threats against the home front are dwarfed by one - Iran must not be allowed to have nuclear arms!" - was prompted by that deadline.
Ex-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert did not have that information when he "assured" Tel Aviv students Sunday, "Iran's nuclear program has not reached the threshold necessitating Israeli action now or in the near future." He further claimed that Israel's "defense leaders" don't subscribe to the view that "action now is unavoidable." Olmert, who stepped down under a cloud of suspected corruption in 2009, has not since then had access to regular intelligence briefings on Iran. So either he spoke out of ignorance or willfully joined an opposition chorus of voices speaking out against Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
The fact is that when Olmert approved the Israeli strike for destroying a nuclear reactor under construction by Iran and North Korea in northern Syria in September 2007, Iran was years away from accumulating enough enriched uranium and the capability to build nuclear warheads. Both are now within Tehran's grasp in weeks.
Leading an opposition campaign to bring down the incumbent government is legitimate. Discrediting belated Israeli action to pre-empt a nuclear Iran as fodder for that campaign is not. If what Olmert and Barack (the same defense minister as today) did in 2007 was necessary then, action now for delaying Iran's imminent "breakout" to a bomb is many times more necessary and far more urgent.
However Netanyahu and Barak have put themselves in a straitjacket by two lapses:
1. By foot-dragging on their decision for two years, they have led their opponents at home and in Washington - and Khamenei's office too - to believe that, by turning on the heat, they can hold Israel back from military action against Iran's nuclear program until it is too late. The time has been used not just for Iranian nuclear progress, but to enlist ex-politicians and retired generals at home and add them to the voices, especially in the White House, which believe Israel can learn to live with a nuclear-armed Iran.
2. Netanyahu and Barak have behaved as though a decision on Iran is in their exclusive province, insulated from the turmoil and change swirling through Israel's Arab neighbors in the past two years.

On the plus side, no one from the mainstream media has come forward to tell us how Sarah Palin and the Tea Parties are responsible for last week's shooting at the Family Research Council, where a heroic guard was wounded while averting what could have been a blood bath.
Conservative commentary has focused on media hypocrisy. If the jackboot had been on the other foot - if a pro-family activist attempted to commit mass murder at the D.C. Center for the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender Community - it would have been national news for a fortnight at least, and everyone who ever had a mean thought about Barack Obama would have been indicted for creating the proverbial climate of hate.
Commentators on the right pounded the Southern Poverty Law Center (Smears R Us) for listing the Christian lambs of Family Research Council as a hate group, along with neo-Nazis and white supremacists.
While correct, the criticism misses the larger point. The FRC shooting is the latest chapter in the blood-drenched history of the left - from the French Revolution to Occupy Wall Street.
This is the way the left does business - with guillotines, gulags and gas chambers, with bombs, bullets, purges, planned famines and demonizing opponents as a prelude to their slaughter.
Starting with the French Revolution, the original tragedy of modernity, the left has been killing and torturing in the name of humanity for over two centuries. At least Genghis Khan never claimed to be building a better world.

Former CIA and Special Operations members are announcing the creation of OPSEC, a new nationwide public campaign to combat the spike in leaks and politicization of Intelligence and Special Operations missions that threaten their effectiveness and the safety of Americans who conduct them. OPSEC - short for Operational Security, meaning to eliminate or reduce the exploitation of critical information - will begin with the release of "Dishonorable Disclosures," a new documentary short film highlighting the problem from the perspective of those who have served in these critical positions. The film will also serve as the basis for a TV and online advertising effort.
"Intelligence and Special Operations members are angry and frustrated at how our work has been used for political advantage by officials across government, including President Obama himself who bears special responsibility as Commander in Chief," said Scott Taylor, chairman of OPSEC and a former Navy SEAL. "We want the American people to understand the cost of these leaks and politicization both on those who serve and on our national security and to hold those in positions of leadership accountable if it doesn't stop."
OPSEC is made up of individuals who served their country in the CIA, and Special Operations Forces (SOF) consisting of Navy SEALs, Army Special Forces, Marine Corps and Air Force Special Operations. It is organized as a 501(c)(4) nonpartisan public education campaign and is independent of any political party or campaign organization.
The campaign will begin with the release of "Dishonorable Disclosures," a documentary short film that views the impact of the increasing number of leaks on Intelligence and Special Operations missions, tradecraft, tactics and capabilities from the perspective of those who have relied on these tools to carryout similar missions and protect themselves and those they served alongside. The film will be shown at events in key states across the country over the next several months, including Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Colorado, North Carolina and Nevada. "Countless leaks, interviews and decisions by the Obama Administration and other government officials have undermined the success of our Intelligence and Special Operations forces and put future missions and personnel at risk," said Fred Rustmann, an OPSEC member and 24-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency. NEW YORK: The first session of the International Freedom Defense Congress, the operating body of the human rights organization Stop Islamization of Nations (SION), will be held in New York on September 11, 2012. The principal focus of the Congress will be a media workshop pertaining to Islamic supremacist attempts to restrict the freedom of speech in the free world, and the smear campaigns against freedom fighters in newspapers and media institutions in the West.
"The objective of this first-of-its-kind workshop is to develop media-related mechanisms to address the smear campaigns," SION said in a statement. It will also address the media's double standard regarding Islam and other religions, as epitomized in March 2012 by the New York Times' running of an anti-Catholic smear ad and rejection of a SION ad telling the truth about Islamic jihad.
It said the workshop will discuss at length the reasons behind and the results of the Western media's offensive campaigns against freedom of speech and the truth about Islam, jihad, Islamic supremacism and Muslims, which it added still occur from time to time.

Freedom fighters from all over the globe, journalists, intellectuals and academicians will be among the participants in the workshop, which will consist of brainstorming sessions to develop mechanisms for cooperation with external partners, and to develop an action plan to address the phenomenon of the Islamic war against free speech.
The organization noted that the workshop is of particular importance as it is the first ever to address the implications of Resolution 16/18 of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the stated goal of which is to "combat intolerance, negative stereotyping and stigmatisation of, discrimination, incitement to violence, and violence against persons based on religion or belief," but which is actually designed to restrict truthful speech about Islamic supremacism and jihad, so as to render the West mute and defenseless before the advancing threat of jihad and Sharia.
Resolution 16/18, which was adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva in March 2011, was backed by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the most recent Istanbul Process Conference in Washington in December.
This is widely viewed as a significant step toward furthering OIC efforts to destroy the freedom of speech and impose Sharia blasphemy laws on the free world.
"We are holding this Congress on the eleventh anniversary of the day jihad came to America in order to strike a blow for freedom," Geller said.

Whether there is such a thing as a world plan for socialist domination must be answered by individuals pondering recent, sometimes strange confluences of world events. But if there were such a plan, would it appear in any clearer form that the United Nations Agenda 21 program?

It sounds nice, until you scratch the surface and find that Agenda 21 and sustainable development are really cloaked plans to impose the tenets of social justice/socialism on the world. At risk from Agenda 21; Private property ownership; Single-family homes; Private car ownership and individual travel choices; and Privately owned farms.
Peco has stopped installing Smart Meters which are part of UN Agenda 21 (Sustainable Development). If you have had a Smart Meter installed on your home, you should immediately call Peco and tell them to remove it. These fires have been reported in other states after the meters were installed.
For those that have already had the Smart Meter installed on their home, Peco will return, test the meter, and place a warning sign on the meter with a device that should a fire start, the meter will shut off. New reports are that Peco has switched overnight to another provider for these meters, assuring the public that these will be safe. Are we to trust this company, the same one that put fire hazards on 186,000 homes in PA?
Now is the time to act! The ball is in our court. I will be trying to go up to Harrisburg in September to push to get legislation out of committee. Maybe we are being given time to stop part of UN agenda 21.

I have some very exciting news! The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.
Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.
Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.
The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.
The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization
Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.
The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center appwill, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.
It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on.
The hyperbole from the left over Todd Akin has been disgusting. The man truly believes that children who are conceived out of rape should not be killed. The Bible teaches us that God raised us up from the dust of the earth and stitched us together in our mothers' wombs.
When you believe that, as Congressman Akin does, then it is asking much to tear apart what God has stitched together.
The left would make this about his poor word choices. Some have actually accused the Congressman of being "pro-rape." Congressman Akin said something dumb and inarticulate. But God bless him for trying to explain why so many Christians do not believe in an exception for rape and believe that to have one could see an increase in the number of claims of rape that are not actual rapes ("legitimate" rapes in his words), but are claims of rape used to justify an abortion when abortion is otherwise prohibited.
It's a terribly difficult position for politicians to defend, particularly in hyper-partisan climates. The Congressman tried and failed. On Thursday night he exacerbated the problem by agreeing to sit with Piers Morgan on CNN and then not showing up.
I would rather Todd Akin in the United States Senate than Claire McCaskill. He said something he should not have. Claire McCaskill voted for Obamacare.
Todd Akin should not have to withdraw from the Senate race in Missouri. But given how quickly party leaders sought to distance themselves from Todd Akin and pull money from Missouri, there is not much left for him to do. By 5 o'clock today, Todd Akin must withdraw.
Recently, a long term friend and I got into a discussion about abortion over a few glasses of scotch. The debate devolved quickly into an outright fight. I held firm in the position that abortion was either a form of murder, and was therefore wrong in all instances where the physical life of the mother wasn't threatened, or it wasn't. The friend insisted that there must be exceptions in instances of rape or incest.
A few days after the argument with my friend I went to talk to my mother about the entire incident. My mother is politically active and also has a lifetime of experience as a nurse. Unbeknownst to me, in my almost 36 years of existence, my mother was the product of a rape.
Somehow, it seems that the folks at the International Longshoremen's Association misunderstood Candidate Barack Obama's 2008 statement: "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun."
As U.S. and NATO forces have begun to withdraw from Afghanistan, problems previously manageable for the Afghan air force have become serious concerns, with no resolution in sight. As of June, the majority of their helicopters joined already grounded cargo planes deemed unfit to fly due to maintenance and safety issues such as missing parts, a lack of spare parts, and generally just being old. Their fleet is comprised of mostly Russian-made aircraft, with contributions from the U.S., the United Arab Emirates and other nations. According to Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak, the situation is actually worse than it was 20 years ago. "When I was chief of staff of the Afghan army, I had 450 types of air assets. Today, we have 102. One hundred two, but mostly on the ground," says Wardak. However, maintenance and safety problems aren't the only issues that are keeping them grounded. The Afghan air force has been struggling with recruitment.
The Democrats in general, and Obama in particular, rely on winning college-age voters by large margins. According to the NY Times exit polls, in the past 4 elections, Democrats carried the 18-29 year old vote 53-34 (Clinton vs Dole), 48-46 (Gore vs Bush), 54-45 (Kerry vs Bush) and 66-32 (Obama vs McCain). In the same four elections, Democrats won first-time voters 54-34, 52-43, 53-45 and 69-30. CNN's exit polls had Obama winning voters age 18-24 (10% of the electorate) by 66-32 and 25-29 (8%) by 66-31, while McCain won a slight majority among the 64% of the voters age 40 and over. (The gap was especially pronounced among white voters, who went for Obama 54-44 in the under-30 age cohort but which McCain won by some 17 points among white voters over 30). Both sets of exit polls pegged new voters at 11% of the 2008 electorate.

Travelers across the vast stretches of the Arabian desert have been known to get lost and in their thirst and exhaustion hallucinate oases with palm trees and flowing water. Western policymakers lost in the vast stretches of madness that define the Muslim world are even more wont to hallucinate the oasis of a moderate Islam to take refuge in. Whether you're dying for a drink or a way to reaffirm your reality, a mirage is sometimes the only way you can find it.
Moderate Islam is a mirage, a projection by desperate Westerners of their own values and culture, on an entirely different religion and culture. It is a mirage that many Muslims are eager to uphold, in the same way that desert merchants might sell goblets and bowls of sand to passing travelers foolish enough to confuse water with dust. And like travelers who think they are drinking water, when they are actually swallowing sand, it is a deception that will eventually kill the deceived.
Yesterday, WikiLeaks creator Julian Assange, a 41-year-old Australian fleeing rape charges, stood on the balcony of Ecuador's London embassy and told the President of the United States to get off his back.
"I ask President Obama to do the right thing: the United States must renounce its witch-hunt against WikiLeaks," Assange said.
It's a bold statement coming from a pathetic individual, says Heritage's Helle Dale.
Assange wanted to take on the mightiest government in the world by publicizing massive amounts of sensitive U.S. government documents on his website WikiLeaks. In reality, he turned out to be nothing more than a self-centered, rather sordid little man with a martyr complex that has driven him to claim political asylum where none could possibly be justified.
While Assange is dodging sex crime charges against him in Sweden by hiding out in the Ecuadorian embassy, U.S. Private Bradley Manning, who trusted Assange and naively leaked thousands of U.S. military records on Afghanistan to him, will face justice. As Dale notes:
Ironies abound in this case. Assange claims that WikiLeaks is a tool for freedom of expression. Yet the Ecuadoran government of Rafael Correa is notorious for allowing no free media. Assange claims that government transparency is his goal, yet the governments he is fighting-the Swedish, the British and the American-are solidly democratic, hardly something that can be said of the communist regime in Ecuador.
The Assange asylum case constitutes just a small piece of the anti-Western, pro-Iran strategy propagated by Correa, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, Raul Castro, and others. It is both selective and hypocritical...It aims to show the West in an unfavorable light.
Dating back to 2007, WikiLeaks leaked sensitive documents such as Guantanamo Bay interrogation manuals, U.S. diplomatic cable traffic, and military documents relating to Iran and Afghanistan. These leaks placed American lives in jeopardy.
Since 2010, when Assange got into trouble in his adopted country of Sweden (where he had settled because whistle-blower protections are particularly strong), WikiLeaks has not posted anything of significance and is at the point of going broke. Apparently the fans Assange claims to have do not value WikiLeaks enough to pay money for it to continue.
Assange said he created Wikileaks to hold shadowy regimes accountable, but he has focused on demonizing democracy and flouting the rule of law.
Now if he is to enjoy asylum in Ecuador, Assange must make a run for it. London law enforcement are standing by to arrest him if he tries to leave the embassy, to extradite him to Sweden. Ecuador's foreign minister, Ricardo Patino, is claiming that England is bullying Ecuador and violating international law-when, as Heritage's Dale notes, "the idea that the charge of rape constitutes a political offense worthy of asylum is palpably ridiculous and a clear abuse of the entire concept of asylum."
Patino has become hysterical, Heritage's Walser says, and threatened to take Ecuador's case to the U.N. Security Council. Walser says, "As threats to world peace go, this must be one of the smallest."

Egyptian Anti-Aircraft Missiles Reported in Sinai
Anti-aircraft missiles can only be intended for Israel's jets, because Sinai terrorists don't have aircraft.

According to a report on Voice of Israel government-sponsored radio, Egypt has moved anti-aircraft missiles into the Sinai Peninsula.
The radio station's Arab affairs analyst, Eran Zinger, reported Saturday that Egypt has deployed both anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles near Israel's border in the Egyptian Sinai, without Israel's permission.
Such equipment is prohibited in Sinai by the Egypt-Israel peace treaty. "Egypt is trying to change the situation in Sinai," Zinger said.
If the report is true, the move is an overtly hostile one toward Israel and can only mean that Egypt is preparing for hostilities with the Jewish state. Ostensibly, Egyptian forces moved into Sinai only in order to crush terrorist activity there. However, the terrorists possess no aircraft. Therefore anti-aircraft missiles can only be intended against Israel's air force.

The Distraction Defense: Democrats, Media Desperate to Change the Subject

The surest sign that Democrats know they are in trouble after Paul Ryan's nomination to the Republican presidential ticket behind Mitt Romney is the desperation with which they are trying, desperately, to steer the conversation away from the economy, entitlements, and the Constitution--with the help of the media, of course. This is the substantive debate that President Barack Obama always said he was ready for, and which the media always calls for in high-minded tones, but once it is here they are suddenly trying to change the conversation.
The latest distraction is a side show in the Missouri race for U.S. Senate, where Republican nominee Todd Akin attempted to defend his opposition to abortion and made the ridiculous statement that the female body has a way to prevent conception in cases of "legitimate rape." He later retracted, as he ought to have done. There is room for diversity in the GOP of views on the moral aspects of abortion; there's no room for disagreement on the questions of whether rape is ever welcome or how babies are made.

AFA: SPLC's reckless rhetoric linked to FRC shooting

We are thankful to God for His gracious hand of protection over the staff of our good friends at the Family Research Council. We applaud security guard Leo Johnson for his heroism and are likewise grateful that he will recover from his wounds.
However, this near-tragic incident marks an alarming turn in our cultural battle over values. The left's war on religion and Christianity has now gone from symbolic to literal.
As conservatives, we believe that public policy disputes should be resolved through the use of ballots, not bullets, through votes, not violence, through reason, not rage.
Last week's shooter, who was a homosexual activist who volunteered at a D.C. lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community center, took the argument to a whole new and ugly level.
Disagreement is not hatred. We don't hate anyone. In fact, we love homosexuals enough to tell them the truth about the risks involved in their lifestyle choices. But for those who hate the truth, the truth will seem to be hate.
We acknowledge the many homosexual activist groups who issued a statement condemning last week's violence, and we commend them for doing so.
However, the Southern Poverty Law Center must be called to account. The SPLC argues incessantly that the use of inflammatory and incendiary language when talking about homosexuality promotes violence, and is quick to blame FRC and other organizations such as AFA for every act of violence they possibly can.
Yet the SPLC has consistently used dangerously misguided language in classifying the Family Research Council- with absolutely no foundation- as a "hate" group. They have repeatedly and without cause demonized FRC, and have spent years stirring up anger in the homosexual community and directing that anger toward an organization whose only crime is to promote and defend the classic American values of faith, family and freedom.
Thus according to SPLC's own standards, it is the SPLC that is to blame for last week's shooting.
We at AFA are blaming the shooter. He must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law for endangering the lives of so many innocent Americans. The AP is reporting that he had a box of ammunition and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in his backpack, raising the possibility that he intended to leave a Chick-fil-A calling card with each of his victims.
But the SPLC, by their own hateful and malicious rhetoric against FRC and AFA, has essentially claimed responsibility for this shooting, and they too should be held to account in the court of public opinion.
SPLC claims it only lists organizations as "hate groups" if they engage in the "propagation of known falsehoods" about homosexuality. But the SPLC website itself lists numerous falsehoods about homosexuality. For instance, the SPLC says, without a single shred of proof, that homosexuals are born that way, that it is impossible to leave the gay lifestyle, and that homosexuals are not at elevated risks of depression, anxiety and substance abuse disorders.
In other words, if propagating known falsehoods about homosexuality qualifies an organization, then SPLC belongs on its own list.
We call on SPLC to explicitly and publicly condemn the motives of last week's shooter, and to remove both FRC and AFA from its hate group map.

In a new book that is set for publication on Tuesday, Mallory Factor and Elizabeth Factor claim that Barack Obama's health care reform was, in part, an effort to unionize twenty-one million health care workers. Factor is a politics and government professor at the Citadel. The new book is titled Shadowbosses: Government Unions Control America and Rob Taxpayers Blind.
The substance of the book is a December 9, 2008 memo from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare president Dennis Rivera to the transition team of Obama-Biden.
That memo outlined a legislative proposal calling for "increasing the capacity of the health care workforce" as part of a larger health care reform initiative.
The SEIU and the Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Factor writes, later coordinated with other public-sector unions to spend "literally hundreds of millions of dollars promoting Obamacare.

You might have forgotten, for instance, that there is an effective unemployment rate in this country of around 14 percent. (Of course, our officially recorded unemployment rate is 8.3 percent, and it has been that way for a record 43 months.) It is a bitter pill, but it is real and it must not be forgotten. Is this the accomplishment of Obama's that the Chicago shopping center chose to memorialize? No. But that is understandable, given Illinois's painful unemployment rate of 8.9 percent.

Customized learning has led the education news cycle over the past few weeks as back to school season gets in full swing. And for good reason. Every day there is growing evidence that a seismic shift in the delivery of instruction is underway, bringing with it a tidal wave of educational options for families. Recent coverage in Education Week, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal has highlighted the success of hybird and customized learning in the K-12 arena.
Higher education is also becoming increasingly customized. Daphne Koller, co-founder of Coursera, an online learning platform that offers free courses to anyone in the world from some of the U.S.'s top universities, explains the massive potential customization that online learning holds. Koller describes how one of her Stanford colleagues had over 100,000 students enrolled in a machine course online. "So to put that number into perspective, for [the professor] to reach that same size audience by teaching a Stanford class, he would have to do that for 250 years.'"
An Ominous Political Trend for Common Core-ites Across the country, state leaders, legislators, and boards of education are recognizing and rejecting the federal overreach that the Common Core movement represents. This does not bode well for the broad-based support that would be necessary for successful implementation.
Race to the Top for School Districts: More Federal Education InterventionBy Lindsey Burke The Obama Administration's new Race to the Top District (RTT-D) competition, a competitive grant program on top of the more than 100 programs the Department of Education (DOE) already operates, entices cash-strapped school districts with another $400 million to implement the Obama education agenda. For the past half-century, federal education funding and control have been growing at the expense of state educational autonomy. The last thing our struggling education system needs is for local school districts to become dependent on Washington for education funding, further centralizing school-level policies in the hands of federal bureaucrats. RTT-D is an offshoot of the original Race to the Top (RTT), the Obama Administration's $4.35 billion competitive grant program to states carved out of the "stimulus." The DOE says the new district-level program will "help schools become engines of innovation." Concern about the Administration's push to nationalize the content taught in schools across America through the Common Core State Standards led some states to pass on the original RTT competition. States like Alaska, Texas, and North Dakota have never applied for RTT grants. Under the new district-level competition, the feds will appeal directly to school districts, offering up millions in exchange for adoption of the White House's preferred policies.
Florida students have been approved to receive scholarships through the state's corporate tax credit scholarship program, with more applications in the queue.
Roughly 60 percent say they would support tax-credit scholarships, and 60 percent also say they support charter schools.
"A real market-based approach would focus on giving customers the power to control all of a child's share of education spending to design a learning program and experience that is uniquely suited to meet her specific needs. This would give parents an incentive to economize and shop for superior services, while also encouraging learning providers to offer the best services at the lowest possible price."

Arizona Governor Takes a Stand Against Obama Amnesty
On the day the Obama Administration's backdoor amnesty for illegal aliens up to the age of 30 took effect, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer issued an executive order prohibiting the State from granting taxpayer-funded benefits, including driver's licenses, to illegal aliens benefitting from the initiative.
Last week the California State Senate amended and passed AB 1081, a bill that prohibits state and local law enforcement agents from honoring U.S. ICE detainers unless certain conditions are met.
"Code words" is a favorite phrase of the Democrats. When a conservative confronts them with the truth they will often isolate a small portion of what has been said and accuse the speaker of using "code words" so they can obfuscate and hide until the heat dies down. If a conservative says something like, "States have a right to refuse to do something ordered by Barack Obama," Democrats will take the words "States have a right" and claim they hear "code words" for "States Rights" which is supposed to mean Republicans want to put African Americans back into the chains Democrats kept them in for 250 year until Republicans freed them.

We all knew that Mitt Romney had outraised President Obama over the last few months; many were unaware that Obama's totals to date were nevertheless far greater than Romney's ($300 million is the number I've seen). What we didn't know was how much money the campaigns had on hand. Now we know, thanks to today's FEC filing by the Obama campaign.
The numbers are pretty stunning, and bode well for Mitt Romney. The Obama campaign has been spending money like water. That is partly due to what appears to be an inefficient operation, and partly due to Obama's attempt to smear Romney before Romney has a chance to introduce himself to voters. The result is that as of the end of July, the Romney campaign had $185.9 million on hand, compared with $123.7 million for the Obama campaign. These totals include the campaigns, their respective national party committees and joint victory funds that raise money for both.
It appears certain that Romney will outraise Obama the rest of the way, which means that from now until Election Day, Romney will have significantly more to spend than Obama. Not only that, his advantage will be increased by what seems to be a more efficient-i.e., cheaper-campaign operation. This chart shows how Romney has overtaken Obama in cash on hand:
So if you want to be optimistic, you could sum up by saying that Romney has absorbed Obama's best shots; that despite having been considerably outspent to this point, he is even with Obama in the polls; and that from now on, the cash advantage will be his.
Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican who is running for the Senate in Missouri, is under fire for his statement that victims of "legitimate rape" rarely get pregnant because "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," in the event of rape. Senators Scott Brown and Ron Johnson have already urged their fellow Republican to withdraw from the race. Senator John Cornyn is asking Akin to consider doing so.
But Akin's Democratic opponent, Sen. Claire McCaskill, seems quite content to have Akin stay in the race. Though claiming to be outraged by his remark, McCaskill declined, during an interview on MSNBC to call for Akin's withdrawal. Making her true preference clear, she added that for Akin to withdraw would be "radical" after a hotly contested three-way Republican primary which Akin won "by a comfortable margin." Translation: please, please, please, don't withdraw.
Akin actually received only 36 percent of the vote in the Republican Senate primary. But McCaskill has her politics, if not her facts, absolutely right. She was basically political toast - trailing Akin by 11 points in the most recent poll - until Akin made his comment. Now, suddenly, she has probably has a decent shot at retaining her seat.
Moreover, McCaskill and the Democrats are financially invested in Akin. They reportedly poured more than $1 million into the Republican Missouri Senate primary by way of advertising designed to boost Akin among Republicans.
You have to hand it to the Dems; they continue to demonstrate considerably more savvy in the Senate candidate selection process than the Republicans do.
According to Politico, under Missouri law, Akin cannot withdraw unless he does so by tomorrow. If he does withdraw, then McCaskill can be asked to explain why the Dems worked in favor of this nominee. If he doesn't, Akin can spend the next ten weeks trying to explain away one of the most politcally stupid remarks in memory.
Even in the face of a plea from Nancy Pelosi, President Obama insisted on subordinating the defense needs of the United States to his reelection efforts. This is an under-reported lesson from Glenn Thrush's new e-book, Obama's Last Stand. According to Thrush:
In mid-2012, the House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, requested a sit-down to ask Obama to reconsider the billions of defense cuts that would kick in automatically as part of the 2011 budget deal. The cuts included in 'the sequester,' she argued, would hurt Democratic House members with major defense contractors in their districts. They were asking for an alternative state of cuts, or any kind of plan that would keep local employers - and, by implication, local contributors - happy.
Note that Pelosi's concern was keeping local financial contributors happy. If she was concerned about the impact of sequestration on our armed services and national security, she did not, according to Thrush's account, make this her pitch to President Obama.
Nonetheless, Obama understands the harm that sequestration would inflict on our military, a harm about which his Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, has repeatedly warned. Indeed, Panetta says that sequestration would be devastating to our military.
So how did the Commander-in-Chief respond to Pelosi? Thrush says he responded as follows:
Obama told the former speaker what he had been saying for months - that he wasn't budging on the defense cuts. Doing so would surrender his only leverage in forcing House Republicans to accept the expiration of tax cuts for the wealthy - the only weapon he had against their efforts 'to delegitimize me,' as he put it. Moreover, he bluntly called on Hill Democrats to reorient their priorities - from them to him. 'Look, guys,' he told Pelosi, Harry Reid, and several other congressional leaders, according to a person briefed in detail on the interaction. 'I plan on winning this race. If I don't win, then anything we say now doesn't matter. I plan on winning this race. So let's figure out how to win this race.'
Yesterday's edition of Meet The Press featured the following exchange between Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne and Ted Cruz, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate out of Texas:
MR. DIONNE: I was just going to say President Obama put a plan on the table that would balance the budget in 12 years, which is quicker than the Ryan budget. I'm a liberal. I didn't even agree with all-everything that was in that plan. But this notion that the President hasn't put down budget proposals...
MR. REED: That's true.
MR. DIONNE: ...he tried to reach a deal with John Boehner and that deal fell through. But he was willing to put a lot on the table.
GREGORY: Well- well...
MR. CRUZ: And how many votes did that plan get?
MR. DIONNE: Well, that's- that is a side issue because...
MR. CRUZ: It got zero votes. Not a Democrat...
MR. DIONNE: No, no, Obama...
MR. CRUZ: ...in the Senate voted for it.
MR. DIONNE: Yes, because...
MR. CRUZ: Not one.
MR. DIONNE: ...the vote was put up there as a political matter. The fact is it was a serious plan and serious budgets get voted on...
MR. CRUZ: He got zero votes in the Senate. That's not......a serious plan.
The stark choice between the competing visions presented in this year's presidential election manifests itself most plainly in the Medicare debate. President Obama wants to rely on the federal government to impose price controls and other forms of micromanagement to contain costs while delivering good service. The Romney-Ryan ticket wants to rely on a more traditionally American mechanism - competition.
The Romney-Ryan approach is already proving its efficacy in the prescription drug portion of Medicare. Thanks in no small part to reliance on consumer choice, and the resulting competition, costs have been contained - monthly premiums are stable and costs are 30 percent below initial estimates.
Additional evidence that competition works comes via a column by Robert Samuelson of the Washington Post. He points to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study was performed by three Harvard economists, one of whom, David Cutler, prominently supports Obamacare.
The study finds that Medicare Advantage, a voucher-like program that promotes consumer choice, costs less than traditional Medicare. From 2006 to 2009, it cost 11 percent less on average.
This finding should surprise, if anyone, only the most ardent socialist. When people are able to shop for low-cost, high-quality offerings, providers have an incentive to improve services and lower costs. By contrast, under the fee-for-service approach of traditional Medicare, providers have an incentive to perform unneeded tests and procedures.
Obamacare purports to deal with this problem by cutting reimbursement rates. However, as Samuelson explains, reimbursement reductions don't improve delivery systems; if anything, they increase the incentive to increase the volume of services, creating more waste. As for the other cost containment mechanisms in Obamacare, they are mostly "fluff," as Samuelson shows.
Samuelson concludes:
Voucher plans are not right-wing, extremist ideas. They enjoy support in both parties. Ryan would permit continuation of fee-for-service; if it's more efficient and effective, it would survive. If not, its decline would be no great loss. The Ryan plan's greatest defect may be that it doesn't start for a decade. We can't wait that long.

COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 78 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS
Politico broke two stories in the past 24 hours. One was about a group of Republican congressmen in Israel last year swimming (one of them in the nude) in the Sea of Galilee. The other is about an e-book that exposes the Obama campaign as "roiled by conflict" and paints Obama as an angry, nasty, partisan bully who has no qualms about personal attack politics.
Guess which story is getting the most attention? Yes, that's right -- a skinny-dipping Republican congressman is drawing more media fire than a divide-and-conquer angry president whose campaign is riddled with divisions. Here's our take on both stories.
"Skinny Gate"
To hear the talking heads on MSNBC this morning you would think nuclear war had broken out in the Middle East. What had them hyperventilating was a story that some freshman GOP congressmen, along with members of their staffs and families, on a trip to Israel (NOT paid for by the taxpayers) took a swim in the Sea of Galilee. One congressman shed his clothes before he went in. Reportedly, the members of Congress had a few drinks during dinner before their late swim.
That's it. No allegations of inappropriate behavior. No groping. No coupling. And, hopefully, no urinating in the water.
While the media would like you to believe that these Republicans somehow defiled this "Christian holy site," swimming in the Sea of Galilee is very popular and promoted on various Israeli tours. In fact, the Speedo Sea of Galilee Swim is one of the largest sporting events in Israel each year. It has been an annual tradition for 59 years.
This trip occurred last year, yet we are only now hearing about the investigation. Call me skeptical, but the timing of this "breaking news" seems highly suspect. What else is waiting to be leaked at the opportune moment?
Contrast this story to the ho-hum coverage of the Arab Spring and the sweeping Islamization of the Middle East. Christian and Jewish holy sites are routinely defiled by Muslim extremists. Obama's policies are leaving the whole nation of Israel "naked" in the face of its Islamofascist enemies, who desperately want another Holocaust. These things barely get mentioned.
The Naked Truth on Obama's Campaign
Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-KS) may have been naked for two minutes in the Sea of Galilee, but it is President Obama who is really exposed in the new e-book "Obama's Last Stand." The book, citing inside sources, describes a campaign deeply divided and led by an angry president who is motivated by complete contempt for Mitt Romney.
One Obama adviser said that Obama respected John McCain because he was a war hero. But the adviser added, "That doesn't hold true for Romney. He was no G-- D--- war hero." Sounds like a great team Obama has put together, doesn't it? According to aides, Obama has expressed no reservations about the "hope and change" theme of 2008 being replaced by slash and burn attacks on Romney/Ryan.
Obama is described as driven by a "trash talking" competitiveness. Remember in 2008 when he said, "If [Republicans] bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun"? Here's another example. In February, Obama was in a Florida hotel when he ran into a woman he knew was close to Senator Marco Rubio. Obama reportedly asked her, "Is your 'boy' going to go for [vice president]?" When she said, "Perhaps," Obama, according to a witness, snapped, "Tell your 'boy' to watch it. He might get his a-- kicked."
Aides also say that Obama fears a Romney victory most of all because within a few years conservatives could have a 7 to 2 majority on the Supreme Court. His fear is our hope. Obama's goal in a second term is to turn the court back into a liberal bastion to force same-sex "marriage" on every state in the union, restrict religious liberty and roll back the right to bear arms!
Obamacare & Rationing
The Obama campaign and congressional Democrats are stuck in a very unusual position. They are playing defense on Medicare and they are scrambling for a response. Consider this excerpt from yesterday's Miami Herald:
"Obamacare was supposed to be President Barack Obama's legacy. But it's looking like a political millstone. ... Democrats have unexpectedly had to play defense over Obamacare's Medicare cuts even as Mitt Romney picked Congressman Paul Ryan as a vice-presidential running mate..."
Knowing full well that picking Paul Ryan as his running mate would invite Democrat "Mediscare" tactics over Ryan's reform plans, the Romney campaign was prepared and unleashed a broadside of ads accusing Obama of cutting $716 billion out of Medicare to fund Obamacare.
Team Obama's response has been that they are not cutting benefits, just payments to doctors, hospitals and insurance companies. Oh, that's all -- they're just not going to pay the people who care for the elderly.
America's seniors aren't that stupid. They know that more and more doctors are refusing to take new Medicare patients because they can't afford the losses, as this Forbes column notes.
In its own way, this is a form of rationing -- a policy decision that will result in fewer options and less care for senior citizens.
When Tolerance Attacks
Though the media refuse to acknowledge it, a disproportionate amount of today's political violence is being committed by left-wing activists against anyone who dares oppose their agenda. Last week's shooting at the Family Research Council is just the latest example. You can read more in weekly column at humanevents.com.
