Dropping the Holocaust from history lessons? What some Schools are doing so that they Avoid Offending Muslim Students

 In Cheshire, two students at the Alsager High School were punished by their teacher for refusing to pray to Allah as part of their religious education class.
In Scotland, 30 non-Muslim children from the Parkview Primary School recently were required to visit the Bait ur Rehman Ahmadiyya mosque in the Yorkhill district of Glasgow. At the mosque, the children were instructed to recite the shahada, the Muslim declaration of faith which states: "There is no god but Allah and Mohammed is his messenger." Muslims are also demanding that Islamic preachers be sent to every school in Scotland to teach children about Islam, ostensibly in an effort to end negative attitudes about Muslims.
British schools are increasingly dropping the Jewish Holocaust from history lessons to avoid offending Muslim pupils, according to a report entitled, Teaching Emotive and Controversial History, commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills.

OPSEC - short for Operational Security, meaning to eliminate or reduce the exploitation of critical information - will begin with the release of "Dishonorable Disclosures," a new documentary short film highlighting the problem from the perspective of those who have served in these critical positions. The film will also serve as the basis for a TV and online advertising effort.  "Intelligence and Special Operations members are angry and frustrated at how our work has been used for political advantage by officials across government, including President Obama himself who bears special responsibility as Commander in Chief," said Scott Taylor, chairman of OPSEC and a former Navy SEAL. "We want the American people to understand the cost of these leaks and politicization both on those who serve and on our national security and to hold those in positions of leadership accountable if it doesn't stop." OPSEC is made up of individuals who served their country in the CIA, and Special Operations Forces (SOF) consisting of Navy SEALs, Army Special Forces, Marine Corps and Air Force Special Operations. It is organized as a 501(c)(4) nonpartisan public education campaign and is independent of any political party or campaign organization. The campaign will begin with the release of "Dishonorable Disclosures," a documentary short film that views the impact of the increasing number of leaks on Intelligence and Special Operations missions, tradecraft, tactics and capabilities from the perspective of those who have relied on these tools to carryout similar missions and protect themselves and those they served alongside. The film will be shown at events in key states across the country over the next several months, including Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Colorado, North Carolina and Nevada. A Brief History & Description of Agenda 21

 Whether there is such a thing as a world plan for socialist domination must be answered by individuals pondering recent, sometimes strange confluences of world events. But if there were such a plan, would it appear in any clearer form that the United Nations Agenda 21 program?
Agenda 21 is a plank of UN policy encouraging the globe to embrace Sustainable Development, which conservatives understand as a code word for global Marxism:
Sustainable development sounds like a nice idea, right? It sounds nice, until you scratch the surface and find that Agenda 21 and sustainable development are really cloaked plans to impose the tenets of social justice/socialism on the world. At risk from Agenda 21; Private property ownership; Single-family homes; Private car ownership and individual travel choices; and Privately owned farms.
Agenda 21 remains to many, classic Marxism which must be rejected-as the Alabama legislature did recently.
I. Evolution of Agenda 21: Journey to Sustainable Development
The following is a brief evolution of Agenda 21, the UN program designed to help save the planet.
A. Ramsar Convention (1971)
According to the site for ANPED, the Northern Alliance for Sustainability, there were a number of International Environmental Agreements (IEA's) which came before Agenda 21. Of the 1131 listed Agreements and Modifications, ANPED singles out a handful as significant before Agenda 21, starting with the 1971 Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat). The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet, The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.
The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.
Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.
Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.
The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.
The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization
 Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.
The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

Defense of Environment and Property Act
You and I are on the verge of losing a vital battle to stop the EPA's reign of terror on property owners.
The only way to win is to strongly demand that more members of the U.S. Senate co-sponsor and support Senator Rand Paul's new bill.
If we fail, the bill will die.
Let me explain.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, and the Fish and Wildlife Service have become OUTLAW agencies of our federal government.
And it's time we brought them under control.
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has introduced a bill to do just that. It's called the Defense of Environment and Property Act of 2012 (S. 2122).
Senator Paul's Bill is vital for the protection of private property and personal freedom. It is a new weapon to stop enforcement of Agenda 21 policies.
It is urgent that you sign the enclosed petition to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urging support for S.2122 so that we can finally put a stop to the outrages of these outlaw agencies.
Why do I call these federal agencies Outlaws?
Because they are making their own rules under the pretext of enforcing federal law, particularly the Clean Water Act. As a result, they are ruining the lives of innocent, law abiding Americans and locking away millions of acres of private land - using the excuse of protecting the environment.
- They pretend that occasional mud puddles are wet lands that have to be protected.
- They arrest property owners for simply improving their land, claiming they have violated the Clean Water Act. Many have served prison time for nothing more than putting some fill dirt in a ditch.
- They block property owners from building on their land.
- And they issue crushing fines against property owners, even when there is no proven violation.
- They sneak onto private land looking for violations. And sometimes they even manufacture those violations and then arrest the owners.
- And when they declare an area of the property to be a wetland, true or not, the property owner can no longer use the land, nor sell it.
This is government out of control.
This is a tyranny orchestrated to enforce the policies of Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development.
But you and I can stop it.
We need to build support for Senator Paul's Bill, "Defense of Environment and Property Act, S.2122."
His bill defines exactly what a "navigable water way" is. It is not a mud puddle or a temporary runoff of rain water. How sad it is that a Senate Bill has to clarify these definitions for government agencies entrusted to comply with the law.
But that's what must be done.
Senator Paul's bill also makes it mandatory that Federal agents get written permission from the property owner to enter the land. No more sneaking!
And finally, Senator Paul's bill tells the federal government that, if it takes private land, then it has to pay double the value of the land to the landowner.
Why? Because once the government declares that land is a wetland - the property value plummets. Doubling the price will help enforce the "just compensation" provisions of the 5th Amendment to the Constitution.
S.2122 will help stop enforcement of the UN's Agenda 21 that the EPA and these other federal agencies are working to enforce.
So, please, right now, sign your enclosed "Support S.2122" petition to your U.S. Senator
I need thousands of these signed petitions to build support for the bill.
Remember, we have to force it past Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid - one of the worst violators of American property rights and individual liberties. And he decides what bills are brought to the Senate floor for a vote.
Only by flooding Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's office with signed petitions can we bi-pass Harry Reid and force a vote for S.2122. The good news is that Senator Paul is Senator McConnell's fellow senator from Kentucky. He will help us get a vote if he sees enough support for the bill from Americans nationwide.
But it won't happen without our efforts! So please sign your petition today!
And, if you can, please call your two Senators and demand they co-sponsors the bill. 30 co-sponsors would assure the bill would get action.
And will you also include a contribution to APC with your signed petition? APC has been on the front lines fighting these agencies for many years.
In fact, APC is one of the only organizations that's been in this fight from the beginning. I have personally worked with some of the victims I've described here. I have shared their tears and frustrations and I pledged to get justice for them.

It Begins... Federal Government Sues to Gain Control of Southern State's Water Supply
Gateway Pundit | "The lawyers told the committee the U.S. government is apparently trying to take over legal management of the state's water supply. The federal government has asserted claims for damages to groundwater in a natural resource damage case in New Mexico involving Chevron/Molycorp. The claim seeks for those damages to be awarded in the form of future water rights management." All over the country water rights are being stolen. In Tennessee it is for "mitigation" purposes, in California it is for the "smelt" (a tiny fish). You name a state and if the powers-that-be haven't begun the theft of water rights, they have the blueprint on their desks. Without water we cannot live; they know that but do most Americans? Hi Everyone, We've been challenged to share, and discuss and even sometimes challenge the people we know about the upcoming elections. It has become a daily task to "exchange my views" in every place I go about my day..(Your time for normal chores becomes a little longer but it's been worth it for sure..)
Recently, I shopped at Landis Supermarket and as I went from aisle to aisle...I was able to ask all the young employees if they were registered to vote....All said yes....I was excited...I proceeded to then ask them if they realized that Obamacare was going to "force" their employer to buy insurance packages that they would not support b/c of religious convictions? Only one young woman knew that Landis's was considering only hiring at the 30 hour a week rate as to not have to be bothered with the benefit issues...I also explained how freedom of religion was being controlled by Obama now in our local businesses....and if they appreciated working for a Christian business...they should vote to protect their right to have an opinion based on religious beliefs....ex: Chick fil a We have seen how this has affected the Catholic Church for their colleges and hospitals....I also brought up how Obama has also "changed" (Which only congress is allowed to do ) the law for allowing illegals to now be able to apply for work permits that will also make it possible for them to challenge and apply for jobs that legal citizens should have...I hit them with topics that really affected them...it seemed to resignate and I challenged them to educate their friends and to make sure they voted...I also saw the Asst Manager and challenged him to sue for their rights as business owners b/c the company that filed in CO won an injunction so his business would not have to buy these policies for now....if our businesses group together...they can challenge this and get Corbetts attention as well....He was thrilled to hear that local residents were educated on the issue and he said he'd pass on the message...they were actively in discussion over the issue.

Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.
It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on. The Times gloatingly, cheer leadingly reported the case of the Duke lacrosse players who had supposedly raped a Durham stripper-(a liberal dream story: rich white kids gang rape a poor black woman)-right up until the point where it emerged that the boys might be innocent. When a Times reporter tried writing a story summarizing the defense lawyer's evidence, the story was killed and the reporter replaced with someone more sympathetic to the prosecution. The Times also kept standing up for DA Mike Nifong-until his handling of the case was shown to be so corrupt he was disbarred and sent to jail. After a public outcry from disgusted readers, the Times claimed that "most flaws flowed from journalistic lapses rather than ideological bias." Uh-huh.

Captain Fields supervisor admits retaliation
"...the police department retaliated against [Fields] for exercising his constitutional rights."
Wow.
It's been nearly a year since ACT! for America held a rally in Tulsa in support of police Captain Paul Fields. After the rally we submitted a petition to the city with over 50,000 signatures demanding Captain Fields be reinstated.
You may recall Captain Fields was disciplined because he refused to attend events at a local mosque, which included sitting in on Muslim teachings.
Our friends at the Thomas More Law Center filed suit on Captain Fields' behalf. What recently surfaced in sworn testimony confirms what we have maintained all along-that Captain Fields' superiors retaliated against him.

ADMITTED: CHRISTIAN COP PUNISHED OVER BELIEFS
'Creeping Shariah' hits city in American heartland

In a case spotlighted as an example of "creeping Shariah" in the United States, attorneys for a Tulsa, Okla., police officer have asked for a summary judgment because a police official inside the department testified the officer was punished for exercising his rights.
The statement was included in a motion for summary judgment in the case brought by Capt. Paul Campbell Fields against the city of Tulsa, Chief Charles Jordan and Deputy Chief Alvin Webster.
Fields sued when he was punished with a two-week unpaid suspension and a demotion for refusing department orders to attend an event at an Islamic mosque in which officers observed Islamic worship services, heard an explanation of Islamic beliefs and were proselytized.
As a Christian, Fields believed the order violated his rights to freely exercise his own faith, but the department determined he was refusing a lawful order and punished him.
A hearing is set for later this year in the case, but lawyers with the American Freedom Law Center and the Thomas More Law Center, who launched the case, have filed for the judgment.

In the brief, they point out that Maj. Julie Harris, Fields' immediate supervisor, "candidly admitted during her sworn testimony that the police department retaliated against [Fields] for exercising his constitutional rights."
She told the department's internal affairs investigation looking into Fields' actions, "If somebody had some deep, deep, deep religious conviction, and as long as there was no crime that they needed to investigate, there's no need for me to force this (Islamic mosque attendance) on anybody."
She concluded that the charges against Fields should not be sustained, according to the brief, and later "was subjected to retaliation" herself because of her statement.
The brief reveals that during depositions in the dispute, Harris was asked, "Do you believe the department took adverse action against [Fields] for exercising his rights?"
"Yes," she responded.
She also was asked, "If you believe Capt. Fields had a deeply held religious conviction opposing that order, [then] he would have a right to oppose that order based on that conviction?"
Again, she responded, "Yes."
The city police department did not respond to a WND message requesting comment on the developments.
Robert Muise of the AFLC told WND the case is an example of the enforcement of Islamic religious law, or Shariah, across the nation today through various courts, orders and precedents.
He noted that in Fields' case, never before had officers been ordered to attend a so-called "law enforcement appreciation day," until the local mosque leaders decided to hold one. Then, the attendance became mandatory.
"This is indirectly the enforcement of Shariah, where if you say anything that's contrary to Islam, it's blasphemy and punishable," Muise explained.
"This is very anti-Christian and an attack on Judeo-Christian values."
"It's almost stealth jihad," he said.
Muise said it wasn't until the last few years that he's encountered such actions in the U.S. But he's also battled similar conditions recently in Dearborn, Mich., and other locations where Islam is given precedence over other faiths.
"All of these discussions about hate speech and signing onto these U.N. charters and transnational rules and regulations to guard against hate speech ... these are just enforcement of Islamic blasphemy laws. We have the First Amendment for a reason," he said.
He said in Fields' case, the officers was punished for refusing to attend another faith's worship service and be proselytized.
The motion was filed in federal court in Oklahoma, where the case is scheduled for a hearing in November.
"In light of the undisputed facts and controlling law, Capt. Fields is entitled to a judgment in his favor that the city and its senior police officials violated his clearly established constitutional rights by ordering him to engage in conduct that was contrary to his Christian beliefs and then punishing him for not obeying the unlawful order," said Muise.
The order for Fields to attend the mosque event was in February 2011. The event was held March 4, 2011, a Friday, which is the "holy day" for Islam.
The legal team explained, "The so-called 'appreciation day' included 'Mosque tours,' which involved religious proselytizing, meeting 'Local Muslims & Leadership,' watching the 'weekly congregational prayer service,' and receiving presentations on Islamic 'beliefs,'"
The complaint notes the Tulsa organization is affiliated with the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Islamic Society of North America - both "unindicted, co-conspirators and/or joint venturers in the 2008 Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing trial."
ISNA, the case explains, is the "largest Muslim Brotherhood front in North America."
The Tulsa organization has had featured speakers such as Imam Siraj Wahhaj, "a Shariah-adherent Muslim who promotes the destruction of Western civilization and the creation of an Islamic caliphate," according to the lawsuit.

Obama's politically correct spin on Islam grows more and more buffoonish. At the very moment he accuses Christians of waging a "war on women," he casts Islam as a benevolent religion to which the Sandra Flukes could take refuge.
He used his remarks at this year's Iftar dinner to praise Islam as a female-friendly religion. "Indeed, you know that the Koran teaches, 'Be it man or woman, each of you is equal to the other,'" he said. For Obama, it is the Bible, not the Koran, that reeks of dangerous patriarchy. Obama has mocked the Book of Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and St. Paul's letters, but he would never dare question a passage in the Koran, which he regards as a holy and blameless book in no need of politically correct revision.
If the oppression at Georgetown gets to be too much for Sandra Fluke, she could always try her luck in the Islamic world, where the rights of women are spreading like wildfire, according to Obama. Thanks in part to Islam, he said, this year's Olympics can be dubbed "The Year of the Woman," as Muslim countries generously allowed a few women to play: "Also, for the very first time in Olympic history, every team now includes a woman athlete. And one of the reasons is that every team from a Muslim-majority country now includes women as well."
Obama was particularly pleased that women got the chance to "face down tanks" in the Arab Spring. Nothing proves sameness between the sexes better than the equal opportunity to die.
Obama seemed unable to get his favorite constituency off his mind, excitedly noting that one of the first "Muslim chaplains at an American college" is a woman, Sanaa Nadim. How did the imams in attendance at the dinner feel about that remark? No doubt they murmur to themselves that Obama is an idiot, albeit a very useful one.

Think of a hybrid, whether it's one of those ubiquitous bailout-backed vehicles that you see happy families driving around town in bailout-backed commercials or magnificent beasts such as the Liger, the Wolphin or the humble Mule. Hybrids are impressive at times, but they don't have much of a future.
Our system is an ungainly hybrid of capitalism and socialism that began when socialism was inserted as a humanizing fallback position for capitalism. Capitalism riding on socialism was meant to be more moral than the naked variety. But lately capitalism has turned into the horse and socialism into the rider, and we have just enough capitalism to pay for all the socialism.
We no longer have socialism to account for the human cost of capitalism. Capitalism now exists to cover the human cost of socialism. The crude bargain that we have is a free enterprise economy being ridden to death and then sent to the glue factory to pay for all the machinery of socialism. And this mule, this merger of the capitalist horse and the socialist donkey, is staggering around on its last legs.
Both Obama and Paul Ryan agree that the current hybrid system has no future. The debate is over whether America will go back to being a horse or turn into a donkey. The donkey party is slowly breeding out the horse lines to turn the United States into a fully socialist beast. A creature that eats money and excretes bureaucracy with a community organizer on every corner and a propaganda bulletin on every porch.

A Mosque Is Not Like a Church or a Synagogue

The marked proliferation of mosques in the U.S. since 9/11 should raise a red flag for Americans. Recent controversies surrounding mega-mosque construction projects countrywide -- many in locations with almost no Muslims to speak of -- have grave implications for the future of these targeted communities and areas beyond.
Accelerated mosque-building -- in Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Ground Zero, New York; and Santa Clara and Temecula, California, to name a few -- carries significance beyond the mere construction of a collection of Muslim houses of worship. It represents yet another orchestrated effort to oust traditional American values and replace them with Islamic practices, laws, and beliefs.
Although most U.S. mosques heretofore have been built without resistance, the newly attendant controversies present speciously polarized views between, on the one hand, ostensibly welcoming, tolerant, multi-culti progressives who deny any possible radical agenda despite substantial evidence to the contrary in existing mosques and, on the other hand, so-called fearful, Islamophobic, ignorant bigots unwilling to embrace diversity. Mainstream media's predominant point of view is that any opposition to mosque-building represents a blatant unwillingness to integrate Muslims into American communities. This view disallows the possibility that such objections represent appropriate, reasoned responses to an attempt to destroy America from within and supplant its culture with a supremacist, totalitarian, and misogynistic ideology.
Islamic terrorism expert Steven Emerson, executive director of the Investigative Project for Terrorism, attributes the spate of mosque-building and land acquisition to the Muslim American Society (MAS), an arm of the Muslim Brotherhood. Emerson contends that the MAS has been actively buying up property and establishing mosques to control the appointment of imams who "distribute the message they believe is necessary to spread Islam around the world."
It should be noted that a mosque is totally unlike a church or a synagogue, entities that serve their communities under the law of the land and are both empowered and restrained under the First Amendment of the Constitution. Under the Establishment Clause of that amendment, the government is prohibited from establishing a state religion or conferring preferential treatment on one religion over another. Although the government may not interfere with religious beliefs and opinions, the proscription of religious practices is permissible, as in the examples of polygamy and human sacrifice.
In the U.S. and in other Western countries, Christians and Jews freely and critically choose their brand of theology from a multitude of ecclesiastic offerings and determine their individual levels of religious observance or none at all. The exercise of faith and the observance of faith-related practices occur across a broad spectrum of individual behaviors based solely on personal choice.
In Muslim countries, no separation exists between mosque and state. Islamic doctrine or sharia controls all aspects of a person's existence, . . .

Obama Praises Muslims While Thomas Jefferson Didn't Trust Them

Little has changed since the eighteenth century. In Joseph Wheelan's well researched and highly readable book on America's first war on terror with Islam, we learn that "Jefferson's war pitted a modern republic with a free-trade, entrepreneurial creed against a medieval autocracy whose credo was piracy and terror. It matched an ostensibly Christian nation against an avowed Islamic one that professed to despise Christians." Wheelan's historical assessment of the time is on target. "Except for its Native American population and a small percentage of Jews, the United States was solidly Christian, while the North African regencies were just as solidly Muslim - openly hostile toward Christians." Obama's Educational Excellence Initiative

Slinging Mud from the Soptic Tank

Public figures' records are fair game in political campaigns. It's not "mudslinging" unless it's untrue or employs "derogatory personal slurs," according to the Living Webster Dictionary.
If you lie or distort the facts so badly that they function as a lie, you're mudslinging. The current "Joe Soptic" TV ad by Obama supporters claiming that Mitt Romney caused a woman's cancer death fits that description.

When It Comes to the Jobless Numbers, President Obama Isn't Talking Straight

"This morning we learned that our businesses created 172,000 new jobs in the month of July," President Obama bragged regarding last Friday's jobs report. "That means we've now created 4.5 million over the last 29 months and 1.1 million new jobs this year."
You should have learned by now on your own that you can't believe a word the man says. If it is not outright false, it is cast out of context to deliberately mislead. Obama's statement is like a pediatrician who brags to you that under his care your 16 year old son has grown to 4 feet, 5 inches. At the same point during the Reagan recovery, the economy had created more than 9.5 million new jobs.

Last December, before Mitt Romney captured the Republican nomination for president, the Associated Press surveyed over 400 of America's leading economists about their opinion of his economic plans. At that point there were still several candidates in the ongoing Republican primary so this "survey" was likely an attempt to stir up division among the Republican rank and file. The results showed that by 2 to 1 America's economists favored Romney's ideas.
Now the survey is public knowledge and the AP is stuck with the results. America's economists believe that Barack Obama's policies are killing America.

FRC Shooting: Media Not Ready to Blame Politics

The August 15 shooting of a security guard at the Washington HQ of the Family Research Council didn't spark the same hyperbolic claims from the Old Media establishment that politics is at the root of this violence. The shooter has ties to the gay rights community. No calls for investigations were made, no individual politicians were accused of fostering a "violent atmosphere," and no particular ideology was blamed as the cause of this crime.
Unlike every recent shooting that happened before it, crimes that were immediately blamed on the evil, evil Tea Party, or conservatives, or even Rush Limbaugh, this shooting was treated in a subdued manner by Old Media and was practically ignored by the talking heads of the lefty establishment.

A Left-wing Hate Crime
We have learned a lot more in the past 24 hours about yesterday's shooting at the Family Research Council. The gunman has been identified as Floyd Corkins, II of Herndon, Virginia. For the past six months, Corkins has been a volunteer at the DC Center for the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender Community, also located in Washington, D.C.
According to media reports, Corkins had "a box of ammunition and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in his backpack." For what purpose? Who knows. The FBI is still sorting that out. His obvious intention was to get into the building and shoot people. Thankfully, he was stopped by the heroic actions of Leo Johnson, a security guard at FRC.
The shooting at FRC was the fourth story on the CBS Evening News last night. All you learned was that shooter was reportedly upset with FRC's policies. The report was so vague you could have easily concluded that Corkins was a disgruntled employee. CBS completely avoided the main issues.
Do you recall when abortionist George Tiller was shot on a Sunday morning in May 2009? Within hours the Obama Administration had ordered U.S. marshals to be posted at abortion facilities all over America. Yesterday, the White House issued a perfunctory statement in President Obama's name, but no one was talking about posting federal agents at conservative organizations across the country.
As I always do when an event like this takes place, I went to various left-wing blogs to see the reaction of the self-described tolerant crowd. There were a significant number of people saying, "I disagree with FRC, but the violence has to stop." That was encouraging.
Unfortunately, a lot of people were also suggesting that the shooting was justified. Unbelievably, some were angry that the shooter failed to kill anyone! Others encouraged more violence.
After speaking with FRC President Tony Perkins yesterday, I did a lot of interviews defending FRC and the values we cherish. I hope the left will examine itself in the wake of this incident, which easily could have become a major horror story.
The continued demonization of people of faith, of anyone who believes marriage is between a man and a woman, of anyone who believes unborn children deserve protection, will inevitably lead to worse events than what happened yesterday.
Those of us who have been working in this arena can tell you that we receive frequent death threats, threats against our families and vile messages. At one point during my time at the Family Research Council, the threats were so frequent that security guards were parked in my driveway at our home 24 hours a day.
One final thought. While yesterday's shooting was a tragic event, it seems clear to me that it was deliberate act of terror meant to intimidate men and women of faith. It would also be tragic if there were even one person who believes in traditional values who allowed himself to be cowed by this violence. If that happens, the extremists have won.
In democratic societies, we don't settle policy disputes with bullets, but with ballots. I hope everyone reading this message will rededicate themselves to being active and responsible citizens. And, yes, that means voting this November! Make sure all your like-minded friends and family members are registered to vote. If they aren't sure if they are registered, they can use this helpful link.

Many conservatives have worried about whether the GOP and the Romney campaign are up to the task of going toe-to-toe with Obama. I believe Mitt Romney is a decent man who would prefer to have a serious debate on the issues confronting our nation. But given Obama's miserable record, it's not surprising that he is avoiding it.
Instead, all we are getting from Obama and his allies are fear and smear -- false allegations about Bain Capital, Mitt Romney's tax returns and a woman's tragic death. In recent days, however, there have been encouraging signs that Mitt Romney is willing to hit back.
Tuesday, speaking to a largely black audience, Joe Biden made the outrageous statement that Republicans would "put y'all back in chains." Biden's reference to Republicans enslaving blacks (It was the party of Lincoln that ended slavery!) was so over-the-top that even Doug Wilder, the black Democratic former governor of Virginia, condemned it, saying, "Slavery is nothing to joke about."
At a campaign event in Ohio Tuesday evening, Mitt Romney fired back. Here's what he said:
"This president has pushed Republicans and Democrats as far apart as they can go. And now he and his allies are pushing us all even further apart by dividing us into groups. He demonizes some. He panders to others. His campaign strategy is to smash America apart and then cobble together 51 percent of the pieces. ...
"Everywhere I go in America, there are monuments that list those who have given their lives. There is no mention of their race, their party affiliation or what they did for a living. They lived and died under a single flag fighting for a single purpose. They pledged allegiance to the United States of America. So, Mr. President, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago and let us get about rebuilding and reuniting America!"
The crowd in Ohio cheered, as did conservatives around the country. I hope this means that we will stop hearing remarks like "Obama's a nice guy, but..." If he's running a campaign of hate, then he's not a nice a guy!
In addition, the Romney campaign released this tough ad going after Obama's character. The campaign is also going on the attack over "Mediscare" with this ad pointing out that Obamacare cuts more than $700 billion out of Medicare.
Dark Clouds Gathering
There are disturbing headlines from the Middle East today about the possibility of war between Israel and Iran. If a war breaks out, there will be an attempt by many on the left to blame Israel. But the blame lies with Obama.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said repeatedly that it is his desire to "wipe Israel off the map." Israel has made it clear that it takes him seriously and views a nuclear-armed Iran as an existential threat.
Israel has begged this administration to do something serious when it comes to Iran's nuclear weapons program, to put real teeth in the sanctions. It has refused. The Wall Street Journal reported last month that "all 20 of Iran's major trading partners are now exempt" from the sanctions regime.
Israel does not want a war. But it is rightly determined to prevent a second Holocaust.

Medicare Needs the Life Support of Premium Support
Medicare reform is coming soon; it has to if the program is going to survive. As budget expert J. D. Foster writes, "Medicare reform is inevitable because its demands on the federal budget are unsustainable."
The Heritage Foundation has put forth a model for premium support that would avert disaster and preserve Medicare for future generations. Moving to premium support would replace Medicare's current defined-benefit system with one where seniors use a defined contribution to enroll in private plans of their choice. Writing for Heritage, expert James Capretta points out, "Political momentum continues to build for premium support because of its potential to control health care costs through the power of consumer choice."
Still, opposition remains. As Capretta shows, "Opponents have made a number of flawed arguments against the concept that do not stand up to careful scrutiny." For example, the left often asserts that premium support just shifts costs to seniors. But according to Capretta, this relies on the "implausible assumption...that competition in Medicare will not affect the efficiency or cost of the options offered to Medicare participants. The whole point of premium support is to build a functioning marketplace in which plans must compete for the business of cost-conscious consumers."
Despite some technical differences, most versions of premium support include certain crucial elements. Heritage experts Bob Moffit and Rea Hederman outline key aspects and themes:
- Creation of a market-based defined contribution,
- Making traditional Medicare compete,
- Enforcing a level playing field,
- Targeting assistance to those with the most need, and
- Setting a budget backstop.
Premium support is the best and least radical way to save Medicare while increasing patient choice and reducing costs.

Federal Court Upholds Marriage in Hawaii

Yesterday, the federal district court in Hawaii ruled that Hawaii's definition of marriage as one man and one woman does not violate the U.S. Constitution.
This ruling comes as the U.S. Supreme Court considers whether to review multiple cases involving the issue of same-sex marriage and voters in Maryland, Minnesota, Maine, and Washington prepare to vote this fall on how marriage should be defined in those states.
In 1994, Hawaii lawmakers amended a state statute "to clarify the legislature's intention that marriage should be limited to those of the opposite-sex." In 1998, voters in Hawaii ratified an amendment to their state constitution that expressly states that the legislature "shall have the power to reserve marriage to opposite-sex couples."
In ruling yesterday that these laws do not violate the U.S. Constitution, the court explained the need for judicial restraint regarding whether to redefine marriage. "If the traditional institution of marriage is to be restructured," the court explained, "it should be done by a democratically-elected legislature or the people through a constitutional amendment, not through judicial legislation that would inappropriately preempt democratic deliberation regarding whether or not to authorize same-sex marriage."
The governor of Hawaii, providing yet another example of an executive official refusing to defend laws protecting marriage, refused to defend the constitutionality of Hawaii's definition of marriage as one man and one woman. Instead, he left that task to the director of the State Department of Health.
Hawaii's definition of marriage as one man and one woman was also defended by the Hawaii Family Forum, an intervening defendant represented by the national public interest law firm Alliance Defending Freedom (formerly the Alliance Defense Fund).
Society has strong reasons to protect marriage. Though not every husband and wife can or will create children, only a man and woman can create children and provide them with both a mother and a father. Marriage is society's best means of ensuring that children will be born into intact families and raised by the mother and father who created them.
Individuals marry based on various private interests. The public interest in marriage, in contrast, is based directly on the role that marriage plays in creating and raising the next generation. Same-sex marriage breaks the essential connection between marriage, children, and the mothers and fathers who create them.
Same-sex marriage also puts the law on the wrong side of reality by claiming that marriage is something other than what it is: the union of husband and wife. Many kinds of relationships are meaningful and valuable to the individuals involved and even to the broader public. But that does not make them marriages. It is not irrational or bigoted for the law to recognize that marriage is a unique kind of relationship deserving a unique kind of status.
The marriage debate presents society with fundamentally different visions of what marriage is. By ruling that Hawaii's definition of marriage does not violate the U.S. Constitution, the federal district court in Hawaii has enabled this debate to continue through political processes.

The Department of the Interior recently sold a $1.7 billion lease to a company to drill in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. That's good news.
But the Obama administration is "is doing everything in its power to prevent companies that obtain offshore leases from actually drilling and producing oil," according to a new Heritage Foundation report.
After the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon catastrophe, "the Obama Administration arbitrarily ordered the entire deepwater industry to cease drilling," explain Heritage experts Hans von Spakovsky and Nicolas Loris. This capricious move proved to be devastating to ATP, another oil company, that had much less risky operations already underway:

When President Obama ordered a cessation on Gulf drilling, he essentially forced ATP into such financial turmoil that the company had to seek out other countries that would permit drilling just to stay afloat. With his policy, President Obama effectively offshored jobs and any revenue that would come from domestic oil production.

If President Obama would open these areas again to drilling, then he could expect "hundreds of thousands of new jobs, generate hundreds of billions of dollars in government revenue, and bring more oil to the world market, thereby lowering gas prices."

Wind Energy Subsidies Are As Useful As VHS Tape Subsidies
The wind production tax credit is set to expire at the end of this year, which has the industry crying out for continued subsidies.
Heritage's Nicolas Loris has made the case that the wind energy tax credit makes as much sense as a VHS production tax credit. Can you imagine the logic: "We can't afford to lose our VHS tape manufacturing plants. They provide valuable jobs. Americans need a variety of ways to watch recorded entertainment."
Loris says this is what proponents of wind energy tax credits sound like.
Wasting taxpayer dollars on different but similar programs-claiming that these subsidies really are necessary to create jobs or prevent layoffs-simply creates a "subsidies for me but not for thee" mentality in Washington....Renewable energy production tax credits have received support from Democrats, Republicans, and industry groups, but that doesn't make it good policy.
The credit is a huge handout to wind producers, allowing them to sell their electricity for less than market price. They would profit even if they offered it for free-because they would still pocket the subsidy.
The subsidy is already equivalent to 50 percent to 70 percent of the wholesale price of electricity. And that isn't the only special-interest treatment wind producers receive, as Heritage's David Kreutzer explains:
Though you would not know it from wailing and gnashing of teeth over the expiration of the [production tax credit, or] PTC, many states also have renewable energy standards that force ratepayers to buy wind, solar, and biomass produced electricity regardless of how much it costs. These renewable standards are separate from-and, for wind-power producers, in addition to-the PTC.
A business that cannot survive without taxpayers paying 50 percent of the costs does not help the economy. Instead, it eats up more value than it produces.
Policies like the production tax credit concentrate benefits on a few recipients and spread the costs among the rest of us through higher taxes and energy costs. They hurt the economy by making production more expensive, which puts U.S.-based products at a competitive disadvantage. This means fewer jobs for American workers. Those production expenses also make necessities more expensive for consumers, who are already hurting from the higher energy costs. Higher prices across the board hit lower-income Americans the hardest.
Congress should let the wind production tax credit expire as scheduled and offset the resulting tax hike with broad tax reductions elsewhere. And this should be only the first step toward eliminating energy subsidies-and seeing which energy producers can provide the best service at the most affordable prices for Americans.
President Obama often refers to an "all of the above" energy strategy when he advocates for taxpayer funding of energy production like wind and solar. Heritage's Loris puts it succinctly: "The only 'all of the above' strategy America should embrace is the answer to this question: Which of these energy sources should we not subsidize? A.) Fossil Fuels B.) Nuclear C.) Renewables D.) All of the Above."

Are Democrats Starting to Lose It Already?

One way in which this election is starting to resemble the 1980 election is that Democrats are starting to lose their grip and lash out in ways that even the mainstream media find over the top-like TV ads calling Romney a murderer, or Slow Joe Biden letting fly with the maxed-out race card. Today one of MSNBC's commentators, Toure (I guess he doesn't have a first name?) charged Romney with the "niggerization" of Obama. Not even Ron Burgundy could say "stay classy liberals" with a straight face at this point.
In the 1980 election, Jimmy Carter's wild charges that Ronald Reagan was a racist backfired badly on him, and propelled the media to start writing about Carter's "meanness" factor (which had been there all along to anyone who followed Carter's Georgia career closely).
A few samples from a certain great book (that everyone needs to have on their bookshelf):
The liberal columnist Richard Reeves wrote: "The Carter campaign is as mean-spirited as any you'll see in American politics. Where this meanness comes from is obvious to anyone who has watched Carter's rise to the Presidency and the attempts to keep him there-it comes from the top, from Jimmy Carter." . . .
Speaking at Martin Luther King's Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta on September 15, Carter said: "You've seen in this campaign the stirrings of hate and the rebirth of code words like 'states' rights' in a speech in Mississippi, in a campaign reference to the Ku Klux Klan relating to the south. . .
Carter and the Democrats had said they would try to rerun the Goldwater playbook, and perhaps believed that the media would amplify their caricature of Reagan in much the same way they did for Johnson in 1964. They were wrong. The media was harsh on Carter for his indulgence of race-baiting. The New Republic: "President Carter has made a grave moral error in trying to portray Ronald Reagan as a racist." Carter's statements "are frightful distortions, bordering on outright lies." Boston Globe columnist Curtis Wilkie wrote: "Just as surely as the werewolf grows long fangs and facial hair on a full moon, the darker side of President Carter emerges in election years." . . . The editorial page of the Washington Post was savage:
'Mr. Carter has abandoned all dignity in his round-the-clock attack on Mr. Reagan's character and standing, jumping (in a most sanctimonious tone of voice) for "offenses" similar to many Mr. Carter himself has committed, and, most recently, concluding from all this that Mr. Reagan is a "racist" and a purveyor of "hatred." This description doesn't fit Mr. Reagan. What it fits, or more precisely, fits into, is Jimmy Carter's miserable record of personally savaging political opponents (Hubert Humphrey, Edward Kennedy) whenever the going got rough. . . Jimmy Carter, as before, seems to have few limits beyond which he will not go in the abuse of opponents and reconstruction of history.'
Appearing in a back yard setting on October 6, Carter said: "You'll determine whether or not this America will be unified or, if I lose the election, whether Americans might be separated, black from white, Jew from Christian, North from South, rural from urban." (Emphasis added.) Reporters in the press pool couldn't believe it, and the comment was the lead sound bite on all the network news broadcasts that night. . . The network news spin was devastating to Carter. NBC's Chris Wallace said Carter's comment "showed Mr. Carter as mean and unpresidential, Reagan as caring and mature." ABC's Sam Donaldson said, "Carter campaign officials are deeply worried tonight that the President's re-election is slipping away."
Well, a few folks in the media are starting to note that the Democrats are the ones going over the line this time, too, such as Dan Balz in the Washington Post:
Vice President Biden triggered the latest round Tuesday with lines that, had a Republican uttered them, probably would have set off an even bigger firestorm. He told an audience in Virginia that Romney would "unchain" big banks if elected and then added, "They're going to put y'all back in chains." (Emphasis added.)
Although Balz's article is pitched as a "pox on both houses" kind of piece, a close reading will show that he thinks the Democrats are guilty of much the worse behavior. Good of him, too, to note the media double-standard in these matters. This was, after all, the same paper that made a federal case out of "macaca."
Look for liberals to get even more desperate if polls show Romney pulling ahead. Those who don't remember the past are fated to repeat it. I'm guessing even liberals who do remember 1980 won't be able to help themselves.

Which party is more cynical?

I believe that the Democratic Party is the more cynical of our two parties. Not because Republicans are better people than Democrats, but because of what the two parties are trying to accomplish. Democrats want fundmentally to transform America through redistributionist policies that will make us more like Europe. But most Americans don't want the country fundamentally transformed in that manner. Thus, Democrats must be less open about what they want to do. This forces them to be more cynical.
I recognize, though, that this analysis resonates, if at all, only with Republicans. A liberal blogger, no doubt, could make a case that Republicans are more cynical than Democrats, and that case would quickly gain acceptance among Dems. For this reason, it usually is a waste of time to assert the general superiority of one political party over the other.
But suppose we look at the last three vice presidential nominees of the two parties. Barack Obama surely is far too intelligent to take Joe Biden seriously. Indeed, his initial reaction, as a Senator, to Clueless Joe says it all. During one of Biden's lengthy discourses, Obama reportedly wrote a note saying "Shoot. Me. Now." Obama is said to have picked Biden as his running mate to add "gravitas." I rest my case.
John Kerry saw right through John Edwards (no difficult task, that). Kerry described him to campaign manager, Robert Shrum, as a phony. But he seemed like an effective phony, so Kerry put him on the ticket.
Joe Lieberman is neither a fool nor a phony. In my view, he is the best the Democrats have offered in a long time on a presidential ticket, in either slot. But by 2000, how much affinity existed between the views of Lieberman and Gore? Not much, in my view. I submit that Gore looked past the growing ideological gap between the two and selected Lieberman in order to balance the ticket and maximize his chances in Florida. That's cynical.
What about the three most recent Republican VP selections? Having gleefully greeted the selection of Paul Ryan as a break for Obama, on the theory that Ryan adds ideological clarity to the race, the Democrats can hardly argue that Ryan represents a cynical pick. He is an anti-cynical selection, perhaps to a fault.
Nor can the Democrats argue that Dick Cheney, as much as they hate him, amounted to a cynical pick. Cheney was a former Secretary of Defense, congressional leader, and White House chief of staff. Unlike Biden, Cheney did add gravitas, as opposed to its possible appearance, to the ticket.
This leaves us with Sarah Palin. I still don't fully understand that pick. Did McCain regard her as a diamond in the rough? Possibly. However, considering the ideological gap between the two and Palin's lack of traditional qualifications for high office, I consider this a cynical pick.
The final score, then, is 3 of 3 cynical selections by the Democrats and 1 of 3 by the Republicans.

Just when you think Joe Biden couldn't be worse

While much attention has been paid, deservedly, to Joe Biden's "put y'all back in chains" riff, his remarks (the same day) about Social Security received little notice. But they too show the Vice President of the United States to be a demagogue and a fool.
According to the White House pool report, during a visit to a restaurant in southern Virginia, Clueless Joe told diners:
Hey, by the way, let's talk about Social Security. Number one, I guarantee you, flat guarantee you, there will be no changes in Social Security. I flat guarantee you.
"Flat" apparently has replaced "literally" in Biden's vocabulary. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?
But unfortunately, as the Washington Post's editors point out, social security is going broke. The trustees of the Social Security Trust Fund, which includes members of the Obama cabinet, delivered a report to Biden (in his capacity as president of the Senate) that says as much. According to that report, the disability portion of the Trust Fund "becomes exhausted in 2016, so legislative action is needed as soon as possible." The trustees warned that the overall fund is heading for exhaustion too.
Accordingly, for Biden to "flat guarantee" no changes to social security is flat ridiculous. Either Biden has no grasp of reality or he is a dishonest demagogue. Or both.
Even President Obama hasn't gone as far as Biden with this disgusting pandering. Obama, the Post reminds us, at least has called generally for "a bipartisan solution to strengthening Social Security." And during negotiations with Speaker Boehner, Obama put some minor changes of the table.
Joe Biden, then, is not even a worthy running mate for Barack Obama. It more than follows that he is not a worthy Vice President of the United States of America.

China: Don't Look Now, But. . . (Updated)

It's been a while since we last updated the "China: Don't Look Now, But. . ." series (you can find the previous three installments here, here, and here), but a terrific op-ed in today's Wall Street Journal by Joseph Sternberg suggests that China has finally succumbed to the "greater fool" theory, as evidenced by its recent decision to buy A123 Systems, the ailing, Obama-backed (which means taxpayer-backed) car battery company whose dim prospects we've tracked here before. Chinese investors are also paying way over market prices for a number of energy plays that look a bit dubious on an expected return basis:
Consider last week's announcement that a Chinese company will pay $450 million for an 80% stake in a struggling battery maker. A123 Systems, which produces high-tech batteries for electric cars, has received roughly half a billion dollars in U.S. government grants and aid in recent years. It was still on the skids despite the help. Now Wanxiang Group Corp., one of China's largest auto parts manufacturers, will essentially bail out American taxpayers by offering the company a financial lifeline.
This follows last month's announcement that state-owned Cnooc Ltd. will pay $15.1 billion in cash for Canada's Nexen, an oil and gas firm. That's a more than 60% premium over Nexen's pre-deal stock price, for an acquisition target that was reeling from leadership turmoil and technological problems at one of its marquee oil sands projects.
I've been predicting for a long while that China's crony capitalist economy would eventually succumb to the Japanese disease-remember all the predictions in the late 1980s that Japan's economy, brilliantly planned and managed by its government, would pass the United States by the year 2010 to become the world's largest economy? That was just before Japan hit the wall and was never heard from again. One of the signs of impending doom from the Japanese was the way they were spending their huge trade surpluses buying American assets (especially real estate) at grossly inflated prices. My favorite example was Minoru Isutani, who bought the Pebble Beach golf course for more than $800 million in 1990-and then turned around and sold it again just a few years later for $500 million after the U.S. real estate market collapsed. Japanese investors turned the same trick with Rockefeller Center, declaring bankruptcy in 1995 after plunking down $2 billion for the old art deco fixture of midtown Manhattan.
Now it seems to be China's turn. Sternberg notes that China is buying western technology and energy companies chiefly to loot their technological know how (think A123 Systems will still be making its batteries here in a few more years?). But he rightly cautions:
China's admirers say the country is playing a long game. Car batteries are commercially useless today but will be critical one day. Nexen engineers will get that company's projects to work and China will be there to learn from their solutions, and to exploit that know-how when conventional supplies become less reliable.
Maybe. But a very fine line separates such notions and the rationalization of the greater fool who, even if he knows something is worth less than he's paying for it today, believes events beyond his control will eventually lead someone else to pay more for it tomorrow. China's buying spree could be the making of an economic juggernaut. It could also be stocking the world's greatest technological junkyard.
There are other signs. Yesterday it was reported that sales of heavy equipment to China-one of the bright spots of American exports over the last few years-have fallen sharply this year, as construction activity in China slows. I say batten down the hatches. When China crashes, it will be sudden and hard. It will make the unraveling of the Euro look like a picnic.

Who Is General Sissi and Why Does the Obama Administration Like Him?

Andy McCarthy blows away the claim that General Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, recently installed to head Egypt's military, has connections with the U.S. in which we should take comfort. The Wall Street Journal made that claim in a profile of Sissi. So, to a lesser degree, has the Washington Post.
The claim is important because Sissi's predecessor did have meaningful connections with the U.S. If Sissi does not, then our position in Egypt has diminished even more than we thought. And if Sissi's real connections are with the Muslim Brotherhood, then the military cannot be expected to counterbalance the Brotherhood, as many have hoped it would.
McCarthy demonstrates that Sissi's connection to the U.S. provides no basis for believing he will be friendly to our interests and non-hostile towards our allies, or that he shares our view of the world (to the extent that, under President Obama, our world view hasn't shifted dramatically). The Journal cites Sissi's training at Fort Benning, Georgia and his working relationship since then with the U.S. military. This may mean that Sissi has been influenced by U.S. views on matters such as military tactics and logistics. But it tells us next to nothing about his ideological sympathies. As McCarthy notes, Ali Mohamed - a high-ranking aide to Osama bin Laden who drew up the plans al-Qaeda used to bomb the American embassy in Kenya - was not only trained in the U.S. as an Egyptian soldier, he actually served in our armed forces.
During the Cold War, the running joke in countries like Ethiopia was that if you wanted to know where the sympathies of a new military dictator resided, just check where he received his military training. If he got it in the U.S., he was probably pro-Soviet; if trained in Russia, he was probably pro-American. Even if familiarity no longer breeds contempt to that degree, it certainly does not breed ideological harmony.
But with Sissi, we don't have to guess about his sympathies. According to the Journal, Sissi has a broad reputation within military circles as a Muslim Brotherhood sympathizer. Indeed, he is "known inside the military for being a Muslim Brother in the closet," according to Zeinab Abul Magd, a professor at the American University in Cairo and an expert on Egypt's military.
Perhaps this helps explain why, under Sissi, the Egyptian military conducted "virginity tests" of female protesters during the revolution last year.
But how do we explain why, according to the Journal, Sissi is liked by senior Obama administration officials? Is it because these officials are unaware that Sissi is a Muslim Brotherhood sympathizer and have simply been charmed by the General? Or is it because his sympathies with the Brotherhood do not concern the Obama administration?
I don't know. But we do know that the administration has persistently discouraged the military from acting to counterbalance the ascent of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. It seems likely, therefore, that the Obama-Clinton team is fine with the Brotherhood's ascent, and that Sissi's status as a closet (for now) Brotherhood man is of no concern to those in charge of U.S. foreign policy.
