I was invited by the Center for Security Policy to give a speech at the National Press Club in Washington yesterday. The topic was our government's relations with the Muslim Brotherhood and why concerns about Brotherhood infiltration, raised by five conservative House members, are very real. The speech ran nearly an hour, and there was a little over a half-hour of Q&A afterwards. The event was carried by CSPAN, and for those interested, the link is here. Below is the prepared text of my speech:

Imagine, if you will, the following scenario.

A candidate for a high position in an executive branch agency - a position that entails a great deal of influence over public policy, a position that requires access to highly classified national security information - comes in for an interview by the FBI.

This is a routine background investigation. Even people being considered for low-level positions in the executive branch are subjected to them. It is not because we question their patriotism or suspect that they are bad people. It is just common sense - in addition to being the subject of a good deal of statutory law and federal regulation.

Naturally, as government positions get higher, more important, and more sensitive, the background investigations get more detailed - probing not only a candidate's background, experiences, finances and associations, but those of the candidate's close family members.

One matter that is of particular importance is connections to foreign countries, organizations, persons and movements. There's an entire section devoted to these concerns in Form 86, the form that all candidates for national security positions in the federal government are required to complete.

The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet, The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.

The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.

Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.

Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.

The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.

The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization

Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.

The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

Defense of Environment and Property Act
 

You and I are on the verge of losing a vital battle to stop the EPA's reign of terror on property owners.

The only way to win is to strongly demand that more members of the U.S. Senate co-sponsor and support Senator Rand Paul's new bill.

If we fail, the bill will die.

Let me explain.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, and the Fish and Wildlife Service have become OUTLAW agencies of our federal government.

And it's time we brought them under control.

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has introduced a bill to do just that. It's called the Defense of Environment and Property Act of 2012 (S. 2122).

Senator Paul's Bill is vital for the protection of private property and personal freedom. It is a new weapon to stop enforcement of Agenda 21 policies.

It is urgent that you sign the enclosed petition to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urging support for S.2122 so that we can finally put a stop to the outrages of these outlaw agencies.

Why do I call these federal agencies Outlaws?

Because they are making their own rules under the pretext of enforcing federal law, particularly the Clean Water Act. As a result, they are ruining the lives of innocent, law abiding Americans and locking away millions of acres of private land - using the excuse of protecting the environment.

• They pretend that occasional mud puddles are wet lands that have to be protected.
• They arrest property owners for simply improving their land, claiming they have violated the Clean Water Act. Many have served prison time for nothing more than putting some fill dirt in a ditch.
• They block property owners from building on their land.
• And they issue crushing fines against property owners, even when there is no proven violation.
• They sneak onto private land looking for violations. And sometimes they even manufacture those violations and then arrest the owners.
• And when they declare an area of the property to be a wetland, true or not, the property owner can no longer use the land, nor sell it.

This is government out of control.

This is a tyranny orchestrated to enforce the policies of Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development.

But you and I can stop it.

We need to build support for Senator Paul's Bill, "Defense of Environment and Property Act, S.2122."

His bill defines exactly what a "navigable water way" is. It is not a mud puddle or a temporary runoff of rain water. How sad it is that a Senate Bill has to clarify these definitions for government agencies entrusted to comply with the law.

But that's what must be done.

Senator Paul's bill also makes it mandatory that Federal agents get written permission from the property owner to enter the land. No more sneaking!

And finally, Senator Paul's bill tells the federal government that, if it takes private land, then it has to pay double the value of the land to the landowner.

Why? Because once the government declares that land is a wetland - the property value plummets. Doubling the price will help enforce the "just compensation" provisions of the 5^th Amendment to the Constitution.

S.2122 will help stop enforcement of the UN's Agenda 21 that the EPA and these other federal agencies are working to enforce.

So, please, right now, sign your enclosed "Support S.2122" petition to your U.S. Senator

I need thousands of these signed petitions to build support for the bill.

Remember, we have to force it past Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid - one of the worst violators of American property rights and individual liberties. And he decides what bills are brought to the Senate floor for a vote.

The federal government has asserted claims for damages to groundwater in a natural resource damage case in New Mexico involving Chevron/Molycorp. The claim seeks for those damages to be awarded in the form of future water rights management."   All over the country water rights are being stolen.  In Tennessee it is for "mitigation" purposes, in California it is for the "smelt" (a tiny fish).  You name a state and if the powers-that-be haven't begun the theft of water rights, they have the blueprint on their desks.  Without water we cannot live; they know that but do most Americans?  If so, where are their voices?

Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on.

In fairness to Vice President Biden, I supposed I should have a full post for our collective crazy uncle in the attic turned Vice President. The man from Delaware claimed that Republicans want to put people back in chains. Considering there is only one group of people ever put in chains in this country, it is clear he was race baiting. I have no doubt this was orchestrated by the Obama campaign, which immediately is again screaming that the old fool was taken out of context.

It is remarkable that the party that thinks "states rights" is racist code thinks "put you back in chains" is hot and sexy talk. It is remarkable that the party that heard Sarah Palin had a political target list would think telling people the GOP will enslave them is okay. It is remarkable that the party that screams bloody murder when you say they are marxists is okay with Joe Biden claiming the GOP will put people back in chains. It is remarkable that the party that screams bloody murder the moment you mention a death panel has no problem saying the GOP wants to put you back in chains. In short, if you use Barack Obama's middle name, you are a racist. But if you race bait a crowd by telling them Mitt Romney will put them back in chains, Stephanie Cutter, the President's spokesgal is cool with that. She's also cool with telling people Mitt Romney killed a woman by giving her cancer and is perfectly cool with lying about her knowledge of Joe Soptic.

Actually, it's not really remarkable at all.  Inciting racial animosity for political gain has been the Democratic playbook since the Democrats were, well, not to put too fine a point on it, putting black people in chains.  But I'm sure we are just, again, taking the Democrats all out of context.

The Moderate Paradox

The moderate solution is deeply seductive for Republicans, who see their opposition sliding to the extreme left and believe that they can sweep up the middle by just moving a little to the left. All they have to do is moderate their position on X, Y or Z, and they will win over all the unaffiliated voters who are a natural fit for their common-sense policies.

 

This seems like such a no-brainer that high-profile Republicans keep earnestly and then angrily pushing for a surrender on one point or another as the key to becoming the moderate mainstream party. But no matter how many times the Republican Party plays this game, it never stops being the "extremist" party that is out of touch with whatever the new normal is.

Like Lucy's football, the moderate identity is a paradox. The more you pursue it, the less likely you are to reach it. Our current political grammar, which leans heavily on ideas such as moderation and extremism, was crafted by the left. Like Orwell's Newspeak, the meaning of such words is relative and varies unpredictably. That relativism has given us the moderate Taliban and the moderate Muslim Brotherhood. Before long, it might give us the moderate Al-Qaeda member.

"Moderate" and "Extremist" are words that are used with an absolute air, as if what they refer to is clear and fixed. Actually, the value of each is relative to the other. If the range of views among Muslims is such that the Taliban are actually somewhere in the middle, then they are indeed moderate. This does not mean that they are decent people or that we can reason with them. It just means that the spectrum of Muslim views is bad enough that, within that spectrum, the Taliban fall in the middle, rather than on the extreme end.

The relativism of moderation means that there is no fixed position that can be taken which will make one moderate. If you are on a ship that is traveling between New York and London, then standing in the middle of the boat will not put you in between the two cities except during the brief period when the ship's travel puts it at that mark. Similarly, adopting "moderate" positions when the culture is moving leftward will not make you a moderate. It will still make you a conservative.

The moderate positions of ten years ago are the conservative positions of today. Not in principle but in practice. When the culture is moving fast enough leftward, then anyone attempting to adopt a moderate position is already trying to conserve something, which makes him a reactionary in the eyes of the left.
 

Judge Gives U.S. Citizenship to HAMAS Supporter, Muslim Brotherhood Member

Another luminary from the infamous Dar al-Hijra (Land of Muslim Immigration) mosque in Northern Virginia - a "terror mill" and front for Hamas operatives. The leaders of Dar al-Hijrah have routinely given militant sermons condoning the use of violence and criticized U.S. counterterrorism efforts. The mosque's imams have included Mohammed al-Hanooti, an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombings and current denizen of "Paradise" Anwar Awlaki, a senior Al Qaeda operative who was linked to three 9/11 hijackers, the Fort Hood shooter Major Nidal Hassan, M.D. (whose actions he praised) and Underwear Bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. ~ Janet Levy, Los Angeles

Why did an aging Reagan-appointed federal judge grant U.S. Citizenship to a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a man whose mosque is tied to Al-Qaeda, and a man active in an organization that fundraised for HAMAS? Why did he grant citizenship to a man who lied to immigration officials about his association with a terrorist mosque, led by Anwar Al-Awlaki, who inspired several Al-Qaeda attacks on America, including the Fort Hood Massacre and the underwear bomb?

Over the years, I've written about the process of granting U.S. citizenship to applicants, and the fact that immigration adjudicators at U.S. Citizenship Immigration Services spend less than six minutes per applicant. That's right-less then six minutes (and even less than that when you figure in the bathroom, smoking, and lunch breaks these government officials take) are spent scrutinizing whether or not an applicant for citizenship is a dangerous person-whether he or she has ties to Islamic terrorist groups, has a criminal record, and/or is otherwise undesirable as a U.S. citizen. Also, CIS immigration benefits adjudicators are urged to rubber stamp these applications for citizenship, and they get bonuses for the number of such applications they quickly get through (and approve). Given this system and these incentives, it's highly unusual for USCIS officials to reject applications, especially for ties to Islamic terrorists. And, so, when USCIS rejects an application for citizenship based on that reason, it's something to be taken seriously . . . and not to be overruled by a federal judge who hasn't a clue.

In fact, the title of the article below (highlights added), posted at the Gatestone Institute website, could just as easily be "How Political Correctness is Transforming American Education."

To find just one example, click here to check out the report we released earlier this year, "Education or Indoctrination: The Treatment of Islam in 6^th through 12^th Grade American Textbooks."

You'll learn that the typical textbook fails to note that the 9/11 terrorists were radical Muslims and fails to inform students that the state of Israel was created by a UN resolution in 1947.

Most of what is mentioned below is already beginning to happen in America. For example, a couple years ago students at a Boston-area middle school were taken on a field trip to a mosque. The boys were invited to kneel and pray while teachers stood by and did nothing. Can you imagine the outcry from faculty and the ACLU if this had happened at a Christian church?

Doctors want to treat gun ownership like a "social disease"

"We live in a society saturated with guns and need better ways of preventing harm from them," says a doctor who believes the federal government must take a "public health" approach to gun ownership in the United States. (1)

Dr. Garen Wintemute, director of the University of California's Violence Prevention Research Program likens the dangers inherent in owning a gun to those involved in driving a car. "Highway safety measures, product changes and driving laws...slashed deaths from car crashes decades ago..." says the doctor. And just as it "...wasn't enough...to curb [highway] deaths by trying to make people better drivers...it isn't enough to tackle gun violence by focusing on the people doing the shooting."  (1)

Taxpayers' Auto Bailout Losses Mounting

Taxpayers will lose even more on the auto bailout than previously thought, as the Treasury has just revised its estimate upward to $25 billion. This may still underestimate the losses to come-yet President Obama plans to tout the auto bailout as a key accomplishment of his Administration.

Politico recently obtained a draft of planning documents for the Democratic National Convention, finding a repeated focus on the auto bailout. The draft described the convention's objectives:

Tell the story of the President's accomplishments-the auto rescue, manufacturing, ending the war, health care, energy-as central to his fight for the middle class and America's long-term economic strength.

As the losses continue to grow, will the President acknowledge that the only people truly "rescued" were unions? The President could have kept the automakers running without losing money-if he had restricted his Administration's involvement to only providing bankruptcy financing. Instead, the Obama Administration involved itself heavily in the bankruptcy process, picking winners and losers instead of following normal bankruptcy law.

Heritage labor expert James Sherk and co-author Todd Zywicki found that all of the taxpayer losses occurred because the Administration manipulated bankruptcy law to shelter the United Auto Workers' (UAW) compensation. None of the losses were necessary to preserve jobs, and taxpayers spent billions to prop up the compensation of some of the most highly paid workers in America. They write:

We estimate that the Administration redistributed $26.5 billion more to the UAW than it would have received had it been treated as it usually would in bankruptcy proceedings....Thus, the entire loss to the taxpayers from the auto bailout comes from the funds diverted to the UAW.

The union workers, who were making more than $70 an hour in wages and benefits, received preferential treatment when their companies had to restructure. GM and Chrysler owed billions to a trust fund they had created to provide UAW members with gold-plated retiree health benefits-and taxpayers ended up paying right into that fund. That doesn't happen in a normal bankruptcy.

Even Stephen Rattner, President Obama's "car czar," has admitted that "We should have asked the UAW to do a bit more. We did not ask any UAW member to take a cut in their pay." As a result, even after the reorganization, GM still has higher labor costs ($56 an hour) than any of its foreign-based competitors.

More than $26 billion went out the door and into the UAW's pockets. That's bigger than the budget of the entire State Department. It's bigger than all U.S. foreign aid spending. It's 50 percent more than NASA's budget-and the UAW isn't going to be exploring Mars any time soon.

This massive payoff did not "save Detroit." Though the Motor City has a well-earned reputation for having the greatest auto workers in the nation, these workers largely build cars for only three companies. There are no Volkswagen manufacturing plants in the Detroit area-or Mercedes-Benz. Or Kia. Or Hyundai. Or BMW. Since 1990, the majority of these successful foreign automakers' new manufacturing plants have been built in right-to-work states like Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Workers in Detroit didn't gain any new options. And perhaps even more dangerously, the auto bailout established a precedent of government interference in private business. It's not a pretty picture-three years after Washington stepped in, U.S. taxpayers still owned 32 percent of GM. Next to Fannie Mae and the Postal Service, it is one of the largest government-owned enterprises in America.

And the Administration has used the auto companies to further its political agenda. As Heritage's James Gattuso noted, "political influence has been clear in everything from the selection of dealers to be closed to the marketing of dubious, but administration-favored, 'green' vehicles."

American taxpayers are unnecessarily on the hook for the gold-plated retirement benefits of a few. Twisting bankruptcy law to benefit a politically influential special interest group isn't something to brag about.

Ryan In The Crosshairs

The left's attack on Rep. Paul Ryan is in full force. Ryan was campaigning at the Iowa State Fair yesterday when leftist protestors began heckling him. They tried to jump onto the stage and had to be escorted away by the police. Ryan handled their outburst brilliantly. He told the crowd:

"You know, it's funny because Iowa and Wisconsinites, we like to be respectful of one another and peaceful with one another and listen to each other. These ladies must not be from Iowa or Wisconsin."

But once again we see how the left plays the game. While it demands tolerance from everyone, it shows none to conservatives. Far from condemning the behavior, the Washington Post sought to emphasize the protests, writing that Ryan received a "rude introduction" to the national campaign, and that he has "heckled throughout his speech." The implication being that Ryan is a polarizing figure.

Yesterday we reported that the pro-abortion lobby was condemning Ryan for his pro-life voting record. Now the militant homosexual movement is attacking him for his pro-family voting record and support for normal marriage.

If Paul Ryan's name were to come up in a focus group or a social function, there is not one person whose first thought would be, "That Paul Ryan is such a bigot!" But the left is now determined to demonize him for his pro-life, pro-family voting record.

I bring this up because there are still many Republican consultants who insist we must stop talking about values issues. Yet as the attacks on Paul Ryan demonstrate, there is nothing -- short of total surrender and the full embrace of its radical agenda -- that will satisfy the left.

These consultants obviously don't get outside of Washington very often. Few Republican voters are prepared to embrace men "marrying" other men, think homosexual adoption is a good idea and think we should be teaching first grade children about alternative lifestyles.

The lesson we need to learn is that the best way to deal with the left is not to run from our Judeo-Christian values, but to unapologetically make the case for them. If we can't win a debate over fundamental issues like the meaning of marriage, how can we hope to persuade voters when it comes to far more complex issues like marginal tax rates or health care reform?


Obama Lies Again

Barack Obama was also in Iowa yesterday, and he took a really cheap shot at Paul Ryan. Trying to exploit the impact of the devastating drought on Iowa farmers, Obama said:

"Right now folks here in Iowa and across the heartland are suffering from one of the worst droughts in 50 years. ...The best way to help these states is for leaders in Congress to pass a farm bill that ... helps farmers and ranchers respond to natural disasters... But right now, too many members of Congress are blocking that bill from becoming law.

"Now, I'm told Governor Romney's new running mate might be around Iowa these next few days. And he's one of those leaders of Congress standing in the way."

Obama and his allies will say and do almost anything to win. Here are the facts: The House of Representatives passed a nearly $400 million disaster aid bill two weeks ago. Paul Ryan voted for it. But Senate Democrats refused to vote on it and left town for their August recess, leaving devastated farmers in a lurch.

Obama and his liberal Senate allies are holding out for a bloated bill that will spend more than $700 billion over the next ten years on food stamps. House Republicans are standing in the way of Obama's out-of-control big government spending -- not disaster relief for struggling farmers.

Again, folks, I can't stress enough just how important it is for you to share these daily reports with friends and family members. Whether it's "Mediscare" or disaster relief, these reports will help your friends see through the lies of the left and the liberal media spin.


Goodbye, Nellie

Nellie Gray, one of America's leading pro-life advocates, passed away last night. Hers may not be a household name, but Nellie was the indomitable force behind the annual March for Life.

While the January weather in Washington can be daunting, Nellie could not be stopped by the natural elements or the political climate. She was a modern-day civil rights leader who year after year issued a clarion call for America to honor its founding principles and to recognize in law that we are all endowed by our Creator with the inalienable right to life.

In spite of the naysayers, Nellie never grew tired because she knew there is no inevitability in these issues. The battle to end the injustice of slavery was not quick or easy, but victory came nevertheless. And over the decades, as Nellie grew older, the crowds at the March for Life grew younger.

While the media often avoided images of the marchers, the fact remains that more and more young people join in each year. That fact was a tremendous source of encouragement to Nellie and to all of us who have fought the good fight for the sanctity of life since 1973.

Carol and I offer our prayers and condolences to Nellie's friends and family. And we join them in celebrating a life well lived.
