This is a bus of illegals aliens on their way to North Carolina . Said to be in Texas now. They are going unchallenged. This bus needs to be stopped by law enforcement. Activists across the country need to engage now. This symbolic bus ride if it succeeds will leave America "weak and demoralized" if we do not take a stand and fight the takeover of our homeland by this illegal alien migration who are now fearless in anticipation of Obama's amnesty to take place on August 15th. At this point in time America must take a stand. Call every law enforcement officer you know, they must be arrested along with the bus company and the driver.

  

Forget the election; we are being put to sleep by the mainstream drivel.

The real story is this bus, what it represents and the  Amnesty to take place on August 15th.

When Bush was president and congress was trying to put through an Amnesty America melted down the Wash. DC phone lines.

  

We blocked the Amnesty.

  

We need to block it now by stopping that bus and then stop Obama and Janet Napolitano from implementing their illegal amnesty end run.

  

Our forefathers fought and died to give us the country.

The least we can do is make a phone call and hopefully more.

A Brief History & Description of Agenda 21

Whether there is such a thing as a world plan for socialist domination must be answered by individuals pondering recent, sometimes strange confluences of world events. But if there were such a plan, would it appear in any clearer form that the United Nations Agenda 21 program?

Agenda 21 is a plank of UN policy encouraging the globe to embrace Sustainable Development, which conservatives understand as a code word for global Marxism:

 

Sustainable development sounds like a nice idea, right? It sounds nice, until you scratch the surface and find that Agenda 21 and sustainable development are really cloaked plans to impose the tenets of social justice/socialism on the world. At risk from Agenda 21; Private property ownership; Single-family homes; Private car ownership and individual travel choices; and Privately owned farms.

Agenda 21 remains to many, classic Marxism which must be rejected-as the Alabama legislature did recently.

I. Evolution of Agenda 21: Journey to Sustainable Development

The following is a brief evolution of Agenda 21, the UN program designed to help save the planet.

A. Ramsar Convention (1971)

According to the site for ANPED, the Northern Alliance for Sustainability, there were a number of International Environmental Agreements (IEA's) which came before Agenda 21. Of the 1131 listed Agreements and Modifications, ANPED singles out a handful as significant before Agenda 21, starting with the 1971 Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat). Another site, Texans Against Agenda 21, also states that the seed agreement for Agenda 21 was Ramsar:

Runaway Slave Movie

 

We had a great time together at the premiere of The Runaway Slave.  Thanks to all that came out to the corner rally, movie, and the after party.  It was great to be with so many patriots. Because turn out has been good at the Warrington location, the movie will play until August 9th. If you haven't seen the movie, please go see it. It is the only way we will be able to get conservative movies to come to the theater in the future.

STOP the Smartmeter NOW  

 

Dear Patriots,

 

Just to make you aware, Smartmeters are here.  After thorough investigation and talking with PECO, they are currently installing Smartmeters in PA.  Several people have contacted PECO and told them that we did not want the Smartmeter.  Their response is they run the risk of having their electricity turned off. 

 

Just a background on Smartmeters:  In 2008, Act 129 was passed and signed into law by Governor Rendell to make Smartmeters mandatory in PA.  How will this affect you?  You will be required to install a smart meter in your home which will be monitored by your electric company on a minute to minute basis.  The video below explains how the smartmeter was started and where they plan to go with this which will be monitored constantly (new utilities will have smart meter chips in them.

 

Do you want PECO or the Government monitoring your electricity usage?  If this is such a great thing, why is it being forced upon us and if not taken, you take the risk of having your power turned off.  Once on the grid, the government through PECO will be able to monitor each and control all of your electric utilities.  Do you want the department of energy monitoring your usage of electric via PECO and possibly turning off your electric and certain peak hours (as explained in this video).

What you can do:  Representative Reese from Westmoreland County has introduced two bills which are in the Consumer Affairs Committee.   ONE BILL WOULD ALLOW FOR OPTING OUT OF GETTING A SMART METER THE OTHER BILL WOULD REQUIRE CONSUMER CONSENT BEFORE INFORMATION FROM THE METER COULD BE SHARED WITH A GOVERNMENT AGENCY.  Please contact the people listed in the link and let them know that we want these bills brought to the floor for the vote.  This is our local electric company being used for the UN Agenda 21 (Sustainable Development).   We need everyone's involvement so pass on to everyone you know.  Let's make an effort to get this out of committee.

Your Assignments
1. Check that every member of your family is registered to vote correctly by checking here. (except those that are Obama fans). If they're not right, help them fix it.
2. Check for empty billboards, remember the company (Lamar, Clear Channel, etc) and location, and email us or call the company to check it's availability and cost yourself, and let us know.
3. Submit your ideas for a billboard and for bullet points on a pamphlet. Must be short and powerful.
4. Check out FreedomWorks' "Freedom Connector", a networking site that allows real-time communication between other patriots around the country.
5. Call our senators for this bill: Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2011 (Rand Paul) - click on link for details and talking points. The House version (H.B. 459) passed the House recently.

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet, The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.

 

The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.

 

Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.

 

Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.

 

The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.

And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. Has Any Administration Policy NOT Killed Jobs Lately?

Congress has headed off for its long vacation-and-campaign season, fleeing Washington as the unemployment rate rises. According to the Labor Department's July jobs report, the unemployment rate ticked up to 8.3 percent, 12.8 million Americans are out of work, and 5.2 million have been out of work for at least a half a year.

According to one survey, the country added a surprising 163,000 jobs in July, while according to a second Labor Department survey, employment fell by 195,000-raising questions about whether the more positive figure is all that reliable, given that the economy slowed significantly to a 1.5 percent annualized growth rate in the second quarter and appears to be slowing further.

The question isn't what has slowed the economy-it's really what Obama Administration policy hasn't slowed the economy? The policies of the last few years has been unequivocal job killers.

The Administration's foot-dragging on free trade agreements has killed job creation. The extended moratorium on oil drilling, followed by new regulations, killed job creation. President Obama's refusal to build the Keystone XL pipeline killed jobs. Ever-expanding Environmental Protection Agency regulations kill jobs. Extending unemployment insurance-part of the failed "stimulus"-was a humanitarian gesture, but it killed jobs. Even increasing deficit spending has a job-killing effect, the opposite of what Obama espouses.

And then there's Obamacare, which if it goes into full effect will be one of the biggest job killers of modern times.

To all of this, President Obama said, "We tried our plan-and it worked."

And they're not done yet. The Democrat-led Senate just tried again last week to raise taxes on small businesses. The Republican-led House stopped that plan and passed a bill to extend the 2001 and 2003 tax policies for next year and thus defer part of Taxmageddon, the biggest job killer we now face. But will Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) even allow a vote on it?

Reid is a major driver of these tax increases and job-killing policies. He has abused his authority as majority leader to block the minority party from the opportunity to offer amendments more than 60 times, more than all of his predecessors combined.

And Reid denies the connection between the Administration's policies and a lack of jobs. He has claimed that "only a tiny fraction of layoffs have anything at all to do with tighter regulation." But he again misses the point by assuming that job losses are the problem, rather than a lack of job creation.

Having fiddled since January, Congressional liberals have now left town without doing anything to help Americans looking for work. Meanwhile, the largest tax increase in American history is looming for January 1, set to further devastate the economy by hitting families with an average tax hike of more than $4,100 each.

Heritage's J.D. Foster warns:

While these tax hikes will not take effect until January of next year, they are already sapping the economy because businesses are forward-looking. Not knowing what their own tax burdens will be, businesses are highly reluctant to hire workers or invest for the future. And with waning faith Congress will prevent Taxmageddon, warnings and fears of a sharp recession are rising rapidly-fears that further discourage any thoughts of hiring or investing.


The regulatory and legal mess created by years of policies cannot be undone overnight. The growing threats from Europe's travails cannot be ignored, nor can the developing recessions throughout Asia. There is nothing the United States can do to defuse these threats, but we can prepare for them. Preventing Taxmageddon is something Congress should do immediately. It is not enough to pass bills and vamoose to campaign while the economy slides even further. The President must lead, and Congress must act now, to prevent Taxmageddon now.

The unemployment rate has now been at or above 8 percent for 42 months. It threatens to rise higher as the economy slows further. President Obama and his congressional allies should set aside their ideological fencing for the good of the economy: Extend the 2001 and 2003 tax policies for at least a year to strengthen the nation's economic security. Prevent the jump in the payroll tax rate. Prevent the implementation of the new Obamacare tax hikes. Prevent the mandated budget cuts known as "sequestration" that threaten national security.

The "plan" has not worked. It's time for a new plan based on the basics, not gimmicks.

UN Gun Treaty on Hold, but Democrats Persist

Throughout July, the United Nations worked to hammer out the details of its Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). We and many other liberty-loving organizations oppose the document because it threatens the Second Amendment rights of American citizens. It's cloaked in the feel-good language of preventing illicit arms trade, but its solution is, essentially, to register all guns with the UN. The good news is that the UN failed to adopt the treaty. The bad news is that's not the end of it.

 

Action was indefinitely suspended after the United States and a few other countries asked for more time to consider it. However, when the UN General Assembly reconvenes in September, it could renew a negotiation schedule for the treaty, or it could declare it open for signature. The UK, France, Germany and 87 other nations argue that the treaty is ready, saying the "compromises" reached had "overwhelming support of the international community," and they all but blamed Barack Obama and the U.S. for its failure.

 

Suzanne Nossel, executive director of Amnesty International USA, blasted the White House, saying, "This was stunning cowardice by the Obama administration, which at the last minute did an about-face and scuttled progress toward a global arms treaty, just as it reached the finish line." The truth is, as Obama told then-Russian President Dmitri Medvedev earlier this year on missile defense, the president hopes to have more "flexibility" after his re-election.

Finally, a Policy Paper That Makes Sense 

After news of voter fraud in Kentucky and Virginia, paired with the hoax that 1 in 10 minorities would be adversely affected by popular election integrity measures - The National Center for Public Policy Research has cleared the air. Analyst Horace Cooper details new evidence explaining how the poor and disadvantaged see the highest risk of vote fraud being perpetrated in their community. Cooper sums up his findings, "Instead of using the Voting Rights Act to delay anti-fraud measures, the Justice Department should use its authority to identify the jurisdictions where voter fraud is pandemic and insist that states take measures to counteract it." 

 

Sad Irony in Ohio

  It is important that we remember those who truly enable us to fight for election integrity. No, it's not the lawmaker, attorney or bureaucrat that cooperates with us.  Our armed forces are owed this ultimate appreciation. This week, Breitbart News drew attention to an alarming lawsuit which could turn thousands of Buckeye armed forces personnel away from the polls. Current Ohio law allows early voting until the Friday before an election. Members of the military are granted a three day grace period after early voting has closed to accommodate those with drill and deployment conflicts. Sadly, the Obama for America campaign, the Democratic National Committee and Ohio Democratic Party filed suit to strip the military privilege on the belief that the law was "arbitrary" an and with "no discernible rational basis." While this is infuriating, it is important that we remain focused on our ongoing mission in Ohio. True The Vote is confident that our judicial system will handle this in a reasonable manner. 

 

Legal Setbacks in Texas

Eight election laws in Texas, inspired by the work and research of True The Vote, were challenged by Project Vote recently with five, unfortunately, being stayed in a preliminary ruling this week. This is certainly a short-term victory for those seeking to erode our citizen-led movement restoring faith in election systems. The following regulations were suspended by the ruling: the prohibition of photocopying completed voter registration forms; preventing voter registration drives from being mailed; the ban on non-Texas residents organizing registration drives; prohibition of outside-county operations; and criminalizing the compensation of those collecting voter registration records.

 

Fortunately, three very important laws were upheld, such as the requirement that all records obtained in a drive must be completed in full, and registration organizers must be trained - carrying valid identification. We are confident that these common-sense laws will be upheld as the case moves forward.

Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. Tutor a liberal's kids in the ways of conservative righteousness -Lesson 2.  

 

Make them watch The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Liberals disapprove of this film because the Christian allegory is so overt. So that's one good reason to show it to their kids. Explain that the White Witch is probably modeled on Obama's enviro czar Carol Browner and that the world where it's "always winter but never Christmas" is a realistic projection of how the United States will look once global cooling kicks in and no one will be able to afford to heat their homes because of carbon taxes introduced to prevent "global warming."

So you thought God didn't have a sense of humor? You had to listen closely before NBC flipped its coverage at the mere mention of the G-word, but the moment was unforgettable - beautiful young Gabby Douglas acknowledging her faith in her moment of triumph. Her job, she said quietly while acknowledging her Gold Medal, was giving God praise while His blessings flowed down on her. That inner confidence had been characteristic throughout her Olympic performances, a faith that steadied her while the other billion of us held our collective breaths as she negotiated the balance beam.

 

One look at her Momma in the stands, wiping away the tears, and you knew where the strength of that heroic single parent had come from and how diligently she passed it on to her daughter. If you knew what to look for, then you understood instinctively that young Gabby had learned those priceless lessons on her mother's knees. To paraphrase Proverbs, train up a child in the way she should go; and when she is old, she will remember - even on the uneven parallel bars. Of course, you can argue with every bit of that, which simply makes faith even stronger.

HIJAB CONTROVERSY SIMMERS AT OLYMPICS

Unlike the Olympics with its gold, silver and bronze, life sometimes dishes up events in which nobody feels like a winner.

Look at the bevy of controversies popping up at the Olympics.

Such a moment is unfolding in the box-like judo venue a short ride from Olympic Park, where an effort to include more women in the games has slammed headlong into efforts at multiculturalism and questions of basic sporting fairness.

In the center of it all is Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani, a wide-faced Saudi teenager whose desire to compete against the world's best judo fighters - without violating conservative Islamic mores - has forced organizers, the international judo federation and the Saudi Olympic Committee to huddle repeatedly in search of a solution.

What they've come up with, that Shahrkhani can compete in an as-yet-unspecified, modified version of the hijab, is unlikely to satisfy everybody.

Already, Monday night's ruling is being panned by hard-liners in the Middle East, who say they cannot see how it will be sufficiently modest, and from rights groups that say the inclusion of Shahrkhani and another female Saudi athlete, the first women ever to compete for the kingdom, amounts to window dressing, since millions of other Saudi women are effectively barred from openly playing sports, or even watching.

"I doubt it is Islamic to play judo," Sheikh Abul-Kheir Ahmed, a cleric who teaches law and Islamic jurisdiction at Cairo's Al-Azhar University, the region's premier religious institution, told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "Men will be looking at her and she will likely be wearing form-fitting attire."

Others, including some hard-line women, were even more insistent that a compromise, any compromise, cannot be adequate.

"Any agreement (with the Olympics Committee) has come at the expense of her hijab and her commitment and faith," said Alaa Ahmed, a producer for Maria TV, the first pan-Arabic channel to feature only fully veiled women. "She can play for herself in a place for women only, but not on an international stage in front of men to win a medal at the expense of countering her religion. ... She should not please this world in exchange for the hereafter."

On another plane of debate entirely are competitors who may be sympathetic to Shahrkhani's plight, but say she never should have been allowed to compete in the first place because she is not nearly at the level of the other Olympians - a blue belt in which everyone else owns a high-level black belt. One former medalist called her a novice, and another competitor warned that judo fighters are not trained to go easy.

Some have also voiced concern that the hijab - if not sufficiently form-fitting - could lead to choking, or even offer Shahrkhani a competitive advantage, though one she is presumably not skilled enough to take much advantage of.

The aim of judo is to throw opponents flat on their back or pin them to the ground for 25 seconds. Players can also win if they get their rivals to submit in a chokehold or stranglehold.

Most judo matches are dominated by aggressive attempts by players to grip their opponents' uniform - which nearly all come untucked from their belts as the match proceeds. Taller judo players - like those in Shahrkhani's heavyweight category - are more likely to try to reach behind an opponent's head to grip the uniform at the base of the neck for a dominant grip.

"If (Shahrkhani) wears a tight-fitting headscarf, that would be fine, as long as it is close to the body," said Eva Csernoviczki, a Hungarian judo fighter who has already taken home a bronze medal. "But if she's wearing a looser one, that should not be allowed. It is too loose and could be difficult for other judo players to grip her. ... It could also be dangerous if you grab her headscarf accidentally and try to choke or strangle her because it could get in the way."

There is also the risk that Shahrkhani's headscarf could come off as she grapples with her opponent in her match Friday, leaving her exposed - quite literally - to hard-liners who will see her as having dishonored herself.

It's a tremendous amount for an 18-year-old and her family to take, particularly given the normal pressure Olympians feel ahead of the most important competition of their lives.

Shahrkhani's father, Ali, said his daughter is focused on the competition and training at a secluded facility in London. He would not describe the modified hijab or answer any other questions about the controversy.

"It's her first time in competition and it's the Olympic Games, so she is focused on that," the elder Shahrkhani said in a telephone interview.

While the controversy is unlikely to go away, at least some people are being won over by his young daughter's courage and determination.

"She is a pioneer. She is also a tough cookie," said Fawaz A. Gerges, director of the Middle East Center at the London School of Economics. "When we look back this Olympics, we will say that moment in London was a historic step forward for Saudi women and their place in society."

The letter underscores the existence of a third way in Syria, that of a federal democratic Syria, which will give full representation to all the ethnic and religious minorities in Syria.

This ITAI WEEKLY MIDDLE EAST REPORT is titled The Obama-Erdogan Alliance, and it presents the close coordination between the two leaders on the Middle East. Turkey's Islamist Prime Minister Erdogan has become Obama's sub-contractor in the Middle East.

Hurriyet Daily News, a major Turkish newspaper, reported on July 31, 2012 that"A senior US official visiting Turkey says Washington does not anticipate an autonomous Kurdish region in Syria and they favor the protection of Syria's territorial integrity. "  The official, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon on a visit to Istanbul, stated that they (the U.S.) did not anticipate an autonomous Kurdish region in Syria's future, adding that they favored the protection of Syria's territorial integrity and explained it to Turkey in a clear way. Gordon added, "Syria has a huge priority for both of us (U.S. and Turkey). We are coordinating very well on the question of Syria. I think we have very similar interests."  

 

That same day, Reuters reported on a telephone conversationPresident Obama initiated with his friend and designated sub-contractor in dealing with the Syrian crisis, Turkish Prime Minister (PM) Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In thetalks, they discussed co-ordination of efforts to accelerate the process of political transition in Syria, including Bashar al-Assad leaving the administration, and the meeting of the Syrian people's legitimate demands.

 

Obama and his administration have consistently supported the Syrian National Council and the Free Syrian Army, in which elements of the Muslim Brotherhood have a dominant voice.  That support sits well with Erdogan's Justice and Development party (AKP), which has inspired the Islamist parties that rose to leadership in Tunisia and Egypt. For Erdogan and Turkey, the idea of an autonomous Kurdish region within a federal Syria is an anathema, and he is seeking to divide the Kurds of Syria, and scuttle the efforts to create an autonomous Kurdish region.  The Erdogan regime fears that such a move by Syrian Kurds would stimulate a call for similar autonomy by close to 20 million Turkish Kurds.

 

The unification of the various Kurdish factions in Syria in mid- July under the auspices of KRG President Masoud Barzani, forming the Supreme Kurdish Council, and now in control of large swaths of the border areas with Turkey, is challenging the Obama administration and Erdogan's Islamist Turkey to reconsider the Kurds as serious element in the future of Syria.  Until recently it seemed that one had to consider only the Alawi-led Assad regime and the largely Sunni-Arab opposition as the main contenders in the power struggle for control of a unitary Syria. The actions  recently taken by the Kurds (three million strong in Syria), who have not yet thrown their support to either side in the conflict, opens up new possibilities for a third way for Syria, a federated Syria, in which minority rights for  Kurds, Alawis, Christians and Druze would be guaranteed.  

 

That said, it must be emphasized that the creation of the Supreme Kurdish Council is Masoud Barzani's way to appease both Obama and Erdogan who seek to implement the Sunni-Arab agenda (supported by Qatar and Saudi Arabia) and Turkey's interests, and at the same time control the Syrian Kurds, and prevent the formation of a federal Syria or an autonomous Kurdish region.  According to Sherkoh Abbas, President of the Kurdistan National Assembly of Syria, the Kurds of Syria resent the interference of both the neighboring governments and the Kurds from the region (Turkey, Iraq, and Iran),  Abbas added, "We reject any agreement that is short of federalism." 

 

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met on December 6, 2011with members of the Syrian National Council in Geneva, Switzerland, a meeting that President Obama endorsed. Absent from the meeting, however, were members of the Syrian Democratic Coalition.  The latter are Syrian expatriates including Sherkoh Abbas, who are also opposed to the Assad regime, and who seek a secular democratic and federal Syria, where minorities will be fully represented. Why this group of democratic Syrians was excluded may yet be the subject of a congressional hearing.

 

Obama's pro-Muslim proclivities were emphasized in an editorial that appeared in the Turkish daily Hurriyet in April 2009, which reported on the speech he gave in the Turkish Parliament during his first foreign state visit: "But the most striking side of it was that his decency and brilliance was harmonized with the text quite beautifully. Especially as he talked about Muslims' contributions to the United States, Obama counted himself in as part of the Muslim community living in the United States and claimed his Muslim middle name, Hussein. And it was a sincere sign of his positive approach to the Islamic world."

 

In that same speech Obama elevated U.S.-Turkish relations from a "strategic partnership" to a "model partnership."  According to Hurriyet, Obama emphasized the importance of Turkey not only for the United States but also for the world, and went on to say that Turkey will be perceived as one of the most important countries in the world, and will be treated accordingly. The United States and Turkey, Hurriyet reported, "are building kind of a 'company' together for cooperation and solidarity to resolve world issues."

 

Obama's trusted friend and partner PM Erdogan has an interesting background.  He was convicted by the Turkish court in 1998 for "inciting religious hatred" and was barred from serving in parliament and serving as PM following the electoral victory of the Islamist AK Party in November 2002. Erdogan has also deliberately fostered tensions in Turkey's relations with Israel, and was behind the provocative actions of the Mavi Marmara (Gaza flotilla) incident in May 2010, in which Erdogan sought to curry favor with the Arab world by supporting the Islamist Hamas terrorist regime in Gaza against Israel. 

 

Watching Obama's facial expressions during his March 25, 2012 press conference with Erdogan one is struck by the exceptional warmth and broad smiles, as well as obvious verbal support for the brutal Turkish incursions into Northern Iraq in pursuit of Kurdish PKK guerillas.  The pictures and content of the bilateral talks with Erdogan contrast sharply with the bilateral talks Obama held with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Beyond the usual platitudes, Obama did not endorse the kind of "open-ended, blank check" approach he gave Turkey in Iraq with regard to Israel's pursuit of Hamas terrorists in Gaza.

 

The Obama administration has cultivated a strong relationship with Muslim Brotherhood (MB) movements in Egypt and Tunisia.  In Egypt, it has pressured the military to yield power President Morsi, the newly elected Muslim Brotherhood leader.  Above all, Obama has found in PM Erdogan a like-minded person whose interests, Obama underscored, match his own. In the process, Obama has ignored the dangerous accesses of the MB in rhetoric and actions (against the Christian-Copts of Egypt for example, and the peace treaty with Israel), and is now seeking to curb the Kurdish aspirations in Syria.

The Speed of Progressivism
The transformation of Chick Fil A from a fast food place that most liberals had never even heard of into the "Enemy of the People" is a reminder of the speed at which progressivism travels forward and backward in time. A few months ago the CEO of Chick Fil A would have done nothing worse than echo a consensus so mainstream that it was adopted as a campaign position by the leftiest Democrat to sit in the White House. A few months later that same position is so outrageous that it leads to mass boycotts, threats of violence and mayors of dysfunctional urban centers threatening to drive the reactionary chicken franchise out of their cities.

 
One of the wonderful things about progressivism is that it defies the laws of physics and history. When the Democratic Party, a once notable national party that has been turned into a red shill for the sort of people who used to hang out in cafes and plot to blow things up in between free verse recitals, adopts a progressive position, that position instantly travels backward in time to alter history and create an entirely new past.

For example when the Democratic Party decided that its future lay not with racist white gerrymandered districts but racist black gerrymandered districts, its adoption of civil rights, formerly a Republican position that good Democrats had fought tooth and nail, actually traveled back in time transforming our nation's history.

When the Democrats belatedly decided that black people were human beings, or at least a better bet for votes than Southern white men who were in danger of deciding that they didn't have much in common with a party of corrupt Northern elites being painted by a corrupt Northern media as saints, the energy from this decision transformed Lincoln into a Democrat, segregation into an idea that Ike and Dick came up with in between dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and the Trail of Tears, and turned the Community Organizers who had been busy torching black orphanages and Republican newspapers in New York City and Boston as part of an organized wartime campaign to defeat the Union, into a lost page of history.

Governor George Wallace, three-time Democratic candidate for the Presidency of the United States, said, "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever." The real quote though it turns out is, "Progressivism now, progressivism tomorrow, progressivism forever." History works and is revised so that the past agrees with the present.

The Democratic Party has always been at war with racism, in favor of gay marriage, illegal aliens and killing everyone over 50 to save on health care costs. The latter position hasn't been articulated yet, but when it is, it will travel backward through time and since what will take place in the future has already occurred, it has already traveled backward in time to alter our history so that we now know that the Democratic Party has always supported killing people over 50 to save on health care costs.

This however is only a projection. History is notoriously unstable. What was the progressive pose yesterday may be an unacceptably reactionary position tomorrow. The French Revolution and the Communist Revolution and the Cultural Revolution spent a lot of time purging comrades who had failed to recognize that the new progressive position had been adopted tomorrow and had become reality yesterday and was subject to a loyalty oath today. Like Chick A Fil many of them ended up being enemies of the people where they were subjected to worse things than the mayors of bankrupt cities declaring that anti-gay chicken was an unacceptable addition to the parts of their fair cities that aren't on fire.

HOW YOU CAN HELP AN AMERICAN FAMILY GET BACK THEIR HOME

You've probably seen this story already...

Upon returning to their Colorado home after eight months, the Donovans were shocked to find another family living in their Littleton home.

"Last August the Donovans moved to Indiana to pursue a job opportunity. They winterized their home on South Mabre Court and left for the Midwest for eight months. To their surprise, when they returned, a new family was living in their home, claiming they had a legal right to do so,"

But let me draw your attention to something...

The Donovans and their two young daughters have been staying in the basement of a relative's house in Greeley, about 65 miles away. They say they can't afford an attorney and have struggled to come up with $500 in court filing fees and gas for driving to the clerk's office throughout the legal process.

However Fernandez-Beleta and Levya-Caraveo who are stealing the homes that Americans won't steal... seem to have no problem getting very good legal advice.

However, Donovan and her husband were ordered to stay 100 yards away from their home after Fernandez-Beleta and Levya-Caraveo requested temporary restraining orders. The orders were issued on July 3.

However, Fernandez-Beleta filed for bankruptcy on July 20, which the Donovans learned about just hours before the scheduled eviction was to take place last week.

Where is that legal advice coming from?



WHAT YOU CAN DO

I naturally assumed that Fernandez-Beleta and Levya-Caraveo were getting help from a liberal legal aid clinic. If that were the case, nothing we say or do would have an impact. But the Donovans are being kept out of their home by the Colorado Christian Defense Fund .

The CCDF appears to be a Conservative Christian organization and claims to be affiliated with the Alliance Defense Fund. The question then is why are they persecuting the Donovans?

The Colorado Christian Defense Fund looks like a typical liberal Latino legal aid clinic, mostly white lawyers and a Latino leadership and staff. Its allegiances however are evangelical and its website is sprinkled with scriptural quotes. It has a pastor on staff. It also appears to be the legal site of Douglas J. Romero, the lawyer for the squatters.

One of the quotes on the CCDF Romero site is...

"Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked" Psalm 82


In this case it would appear that the Donovans need rescuing from the hands of Romero and the CCDF.

Fernandez-Beleta and Levya-Caraveo have no claim whatsoever to a house that does not belong to them. If the CCDF though their case was at all defensible, it would have made a public statement. Romero passed up the chance to do that.


The good news is that this isn't a liberal legal aid clinic. It's a legal group affiliated with mainstream conservative organizations. That means you can tell them to back off and ask them why a group that is supposed to be fighting for America, is instead keeping the Donovans and their children living in a basement while strangers live in their home.

The Donovans who were already behind on their mortgage are locked out of their home and had to pay a thousand dollars to move the furniture of the squatters out, only to have more legal tricks keep them out of their home. They're living in a basement and don't have many options left. The longer that Douglas Romero and the CCDF drag this out, the more likely it is that they will lose their home one way or another.

A Donovan family member has described the CCDF as "An Army of Satan's Demons" and while I take no position on that assertion, it's a safe bet that there is no point in emailing or trying to reasoning with the CCDF. But the CCDF is a member of the Alliance Defense Fund and affiliated with the American Center for Law and Justice.

The Alliance Defense Fund is supposed to be protecting religious freedom. It is not supposed to be stealing homes or persecuting Christian families like the Donovans. This is their motto.

Since its founding in 1994, Alliance Defending Freedom has made a significant impact for God's Kingdom through its winning legal efforts to preserve religious freedom for people of faith.

The ADF is very likely not aware of what the CCDF is doing or the damage that the CCDF is doing to the good name of the Alliance Defense Fund.

Considering that the CCDF cites them to give it credibility, either the ADF needs to convince the CCDF to do the right thing by the Donovans or end any affiliation that they have with them.

Neither of these groups control Douglas Romeo or the CCDF, but he cites his affiliation with them as a credential. These groups should be encouraged to help the Donovans by ending the legal siege that they have been subjected to by a group that claims to be affiliated with them. If they can't do that, then they should at least cut their ties with the CCDF. If not, then they have to bear responsibility for what the CCDF is doing to the Donovans.

It's best to be polite and civil. These are organizations who have participated in good causes. They can't be expected to keep close tabs on everything that the CCDF is doing. But once they have been made aware of it, they should be encouraged to do the right thing.

We get in on a lot of big causes, but this is a small picture cause. It's about one home and one family. It's the type of story that we read about in the news and then think that we can't do anything about. And maybe we can't... but we won't know until we try. This isn't some liberal legal aid clinic doing it, this is an organization that claims to work our side of the street. That means that we bear some responsibility for it and that we have a shot of bringing about a good outcome.



WHO'S UP FOR SOME MEGA MEGA MOSQUES?

In yet another common pattern of mega mosques, the Stockholm mega mosque was funded primarily by Sheikh Zayed, the ruler of the United Arab Emirates. The Cologne mega mosque was primarily funded by Turkey's Islamist government. The Marseille mega mosque is being funded by a number of foreign Muslim governments.

Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan has said, "The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers." The foreign funding of mega mosques has raised the question of whether Muslim governments aren't constructing their own barracks and armies in the middle of European cities.

The Copenhagen mega mosque's Imam is Mohammed Mahdi Khademi who ran the ideology department of the Revolutionary Guard militia, an arm of the theocratic regime, which was designated a foreign terrorist organization by the United States. It would be hard to imagine a more explicit example of mega mosque militarization than a regime that sponsors acts of worldwide terror funding a mega mosque headed by the former Islamist political commissar of its terrorist wing.

Unemployment Rate Rises to 8.3 Percent; 163,000 New Jobs Created in July

The seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the United States rose to 8.3 percent in July, with the economy adding a net of 163,000 jobs, according to estimates calculated by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of jobs added was more than expected, but was not enough to keep up with new entrants into the job market, reinforcing conclusions that the U.S. economy is stagnant. With overall economic growth slowing, weak employment numbers could indicate that the U.S. is following other industrial economies on a downward path back into recession. June's job number was revised down from 80,000 new jobs to 64,000.

Earlier this week, new claims for jobless benefits had risen to 365,000--slightly lower than expectations--while the private sector added 163,000 jobs in July, well ahead of expectations but down from the previous month. Manufacturing output fell again in July, after falling in June for the first time in three years. Surveys of economists had predicted that the unemployment rate would remain unchanged at 8.2 percent, with 95,000 to 100,000 new jobs created. It was thought that only a positive, unexpected development could lower the rate. Despite the growth in jobs--the highest in five months--the slow economy could not lower the overall jobless rate.

Chicago has just received the worldwide distinction of being the "Deadliest Global City," and I cried and cried.  Sitting down here in Florida's mind numbing summer heat, I watched the Cubbie Bears lose another one, and in another game I watched Anthony Rizzo drive a homerun out over the ivy.  Tears just began to roll down my face.  Oh, I love that town, its beauty so mixed with its violence.  And I started back in time with the memories, oh, those memories. The amoral Democrats led by the crooked Harry Reid have demanded Mitt Romney release his tax returns. Reid is claiming a "secret caller" ( as if he would EVER come to the phone for an unidentified and unknown person) told him  he/she had absolute knowledge that while Romney was at Bain Capital he failed to pay his taxes for ten years.

Aside from the fact that this charge is coming from a group of proved liars and thieves, it's ridiculous in its face.  The history of how the IRS has handled high profile tax evaders makes it impossible for Romney to have revaded federal income taxes for ten years during his time at Bain which ended thirteen years ago.

President Barack Obama has issued an order directing various American government agencies, including the CIA, to provide unspecified support to the Syrian Rebels to overthrow the regime of Bashar al-Assad.   On the surface it appears that the CIA is providing intelligence to the Free Syrian Army to aid the rebels in their fight, however the scope of this directive is unclear. The State Department, most likely acting on orders, has committed $64 million in humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people and another $25 million in non-lethal assistance to the Syrian opposition.

Jeff Greenfield is a good media liberal. His credentials are in order. He is also a "political reporter" so he has to write positive things about Barack Obama's chances for reelection, but he can't quite get there. Greenfield's latest column is about the dismal numbers Obama faces at every turn and it is also about how who Obama is running against might not mean anything on Election Day.    

Undoubtedly with a great deal of pain Greenfield notes that the numbers staring Obama in the face are such that no incumbent president has ever/could ever overcome them. But that factoid is meaningless out of any context, more like a pediatrician boasting to you that under his care your 16-year-old son has grown to 4 feet 4 inches. At the same point during the Reagan recovery, the economy had created 9.5 million new jobs.

Today, the Labor Department released its July Jobs report and yet again, the numbers are dismal. Unemployment rose to 8.3 percent and 12.8 million of Americans are out of work, of which 5.2 million have been out of work for at least half a year.

Obama's anti-military stance in Ohio

Under current Ohio law, the period in which voters can cast their ballot early ends three days before the election. However, the law has an exception for members of the military. They are allowed to vote early right up until election day.

The Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee have filed a lawsuit to overturn this law. They argue that it is arbitrary and unconstitutional to afford special consideration, flexibility, and accommodations to military voters to make it easier for them to vote in person. In their court papers, Team Obama repeatedly asserts that there is no good reason to give special flexibility to military voters.

Fifteen Ohio military groups have intervened in the lawsuit to defend the Ohio legislature's decision to give special consideration to military members. They argue that there are valid reasons for the consideration, such as special logistical challenges faced by military personnel. And they call Obama's position that military members should not have extra flexibility "offensive."

Team Romney is attempting to gain political mileage from the Obama campaign's legal position. However, Obama's spokesmen, including David Axelrod, are defending that position on the grounds that they are not attempting to deny military members the extra three days. Rather, they want to restore prior Ohio law, under which all voters could vote on those days, not just military members. And they complain that the Romney campaign is misrepresenting the Democrats' position.

But, as noted, Team Obama's legal position is clear from its court papers - it doesn't believe that there is anything that justifies giving military members extra fleixibility when it comes to voting. Indeed, it finds the contrary, pro-military view so weak as to render unconstitutional the special consideration granted to military members.

Not surprisingly, it is not just Team Romney that takes exception to this position. As noted, 15 Ohio military groups are offended.

Moreover, there was a valid reason for the Ohio legislature to amend the old law that gave everyone the extra days. According to Ohio's Secretary of State Jon Husted, the old law did not create consistent early voting rights across the state because most local jurisdictions decided to close for the weekend. Husted notes that the Dems did not sue when 6 counties had weekend voting and extended hours while 82 counties did not.

Clearly, then, the Democrats' concern is not equal access to voting for all Ohio voters. It was only when military members became the beneficiary of extra access that the Democrats found the system arbitrary.

If this opportunistic position ends up injuring Obama's standing with pro-military voters, he has no valid complaint.

 

Green Weenie of the Week: Thomas Friedman

Whenever the concluding phrase of a New York Times op-ed column is "if we do it right," you know you have arrived in Thomas Friedman territory.  Has there ever been anyone who knows so much better than everyone else how to do things right than Tom Friedman?  Not even Walter Cronkite was this all-knowing, and lots of Enlightened People wanted him to be president.  I recall that John Anderson wanted Cronkite as his running mate for his independent bid in 1980.   I can't understand why there isn't a boomlet for Friedman as the Democratic candidate for president.  (Oh, that's right-they have Obama, The One.)

Today Friedman instructs all of us lessers on how we need to manage the natural gas boom.  Hence the lede: "We are in the midst of a natural gas revolution in America that is a potential game changer for the economy, environment and our national security - if we do it right."  Thank God we have Friedman around to tell us how to do it right.

Now, pause here to note that somehow the natural gas boom escaped Friedman's clairvoyance, but even a genius like Friedman misses things some times, so we can give him a pass.  More annoying is how the natural gas boom happened without Friedman's prior knowledge or approval.  After all, as we know from The One, the gas industry didn't build that: someone else did.  As I've long argued, if Washington bureaucrats and the environmental movement had known five years ago that the gas boom was coming, they would surely have done something to stop it (as indeed they are now trying to roll it back), and Tom Friedman would surely have added his voice to the chorus saying cheap natural gas was something we had to stop.  Friedman himself makes the case today:

But, as the energy and climate expert Hal Harvey puts it, there is just one big, hugely important question to be asked about this natural gas bounty: "Will it be a transition to a clean energy future, or does it defer a clean energy future?"

That is the question - because natural gas is still a fossil fuel. . . there is a hidden, long-term, cost: A sustained gas glut could undermine new investments in wind, solar, nuclear and energy efficiency systems - which have zero emissions - and thus keep us addicted to fossil fuels for decades.

That would be reckless.

So what does Friedman recommend?  Continued subsidies to renewable energy sources like wind and solar "for years to come" so that they "remain competitive."  (Memo to Friedman: requiring subsidies means that your business isn't "competitive."  Just check the NY Times stock price.)  And he wants-wait for it-a carbon tax:

Why not a carbon tax that raises enough money to help pay down the deficit and lower both personal income taxes and corporate taxes - and ensures that renewables remain competitive with natural gas? That would ensure this gas revolution transforms America, not just our electric grid.

Wow, there's a new idea from Friedman.  How about a tax on stale recycled ideas from liberal columnists?  That might fix the federal deficit right away, while having the added benefit of teaching liberal columnists about the incentive effects of the tax code.

It's taking all the self-restraint I can muster not to exploit the obvious irony of Tom Friedman writing about gas, since he is definition of a one-man gas glut.  Yes, it is long overdue, but Tom Friedman gets this week's coveted Power Line Green Weenie Award.

 

Is Harry Reid the Nancy Pelosi of 2012?

In 2010, Nancy Pelosi became a campaign issue that helped to nationalize House races. Because of her lack of ability, her extremism and her personal unlikability, Pelosi became, and remains, deeply unpopular with the American people. So in many House races, Republican candidates used the fact that Democratic opponents had voted for Pelosi as Speaker, or intended to do so, against them.

It is beginning to appear that Harry Reid may play a similar role in 2012. Reid is an excellent candidate for the part. Like Pelosi, his mental skills are unimpressive and his personality is grating at best. Also like Pelosi, his record as leader of the Senate is impossible to defend. The only difference is that until now, Reid has maintained a somewhat lower profile.

But that began to change when Reid inserted himself into the presidential election with his outrageous claim-made, among other places, on the floor of the United States Senate-that he had heard a rumor that Mitt Romney went for ten years without paying any federal income taxes. Because the rumor is "out there," Reid asserted, Romney needed to respond to it. Reid's smear is ridiculous on its face; like most of what Democrats say, it is addressed only to the ignorant. By fabricating such an outrageous smear, accusing Romney of a crime and attributing the claim to an imaginary friend, Reid took an already despicable Democratic Party presidential campaign to a new low.

Republicans hit back creatively. On Twitter, conservatives started saying that they had heard Reid is a pederast (or-same thing-a child molester). They noted that Reid had not denied the report, even though it is "out there" and demands a response. Actually, the rumor that Reid is a pederast has somewhat more credibility than Reid's rumor that Romney doesn't pay taxes. We know the latter claim is false, since federal tax law and the IRS wouldn't permit it. On the other hand, we have absolutely no idea whether Reid is a pederast. It's possible.

Now, if you start to Google "Harry Reid," this is what comes up:

Many conservatives have asked Reid to respond to the child molestation rumors, and the Ace of Spades actually did provoke a reply from Reid's office, albeit not a substantive one.

The pederasty campaign is a useful way to dramatize Reid's irresponsibility, but there are more important reasons for Republicans to make him a centerpiece of the 2012 campaign.

First, Harry Reid is a corrupt political hack. Nancy Pelosi came by her money honestly; she married it. But where did Reid acquire his fortune? His latest financial disclosure form indicates that Reid owns assets valued up to more than $7,000,000. Prior disclosures have indicated a net worth up to $10 million. Reid has never had a high-paying job in his life, and has almost always been employed in the public sector. As a Majority Leader of the Senate, he is paid $193,400 annually. So how, exactly, did Reid acquire his multimillion dollar portfolio of real estate and mining interests?

The short answer is corruption. For years, Reid has been the beneficiary of sweetheart land deals in Nevada. We wrote about one series of Las Vegas real estate transactions here. Reid's cronies, some of whom keep coming up in organized crime investigations, have made him a wealthy man. But neither mobsters nor real estate developers give money away for free. What favors has Reid done, what strings has he pulled, that have been worth millions to his benefactors? Reid is a poster boy for cronyism and corruption, an image to which all Democratic Senate candidates should be tied.

More important still is the fact that under Reid's leadership, the Senate has descended to one of its lowest points in history. The Senate has ceased to function, unless you want to get a post office named. For more than three years, Reid has violated federal law by refusing to allow the Senate to pass a budget. This irresponsibility, at a time when the nation faces fiscal calamity, is almost unbelievable. And Reid's irresponsibility extends far beyond the budget. Currently, the House has passed more than two dozen common-sense measures that would eliminate obstacles to job creation. Our economy desperately needs that sort of help, so how have these bills fared in the Senate? Don't be silly; they haven't even been brought up for a vote. Why? Because Harry Reid won't allow the House bills to be considered. He doesn't want his fellow Democrats to have to go on record opposing measures that their constituents would consider reasonable if not long overdue. Thus, Harry Reid consistently puts partisan politics ahead of the nation's welfare.

So Reid is a corrupt liar and a hateful partisan who has violated federal law and rendered the Senate incapable of functioning in a time of national crisis. Every Democrat running for the Senate this year-Bill Nelson, Claire McCaskill, Sherrod Brown, Jon Tester, Tim Kaine, Joe Manchin, Heidi Heitkamp and all the rest-should be asked, over and over: will you vote to perpetuate the corrupt and incompetent reign of Harry Reid over the United States Senate?

 

Annals of Obamacare

We've been following the issues raised by the Obamacare regulation requiring employer-provided health insurance plans to provide "preventive services" including abortifacients, contraception, and sterilization. John McCormack notes that the mandate took effect last Wednesday, and triggered the filing of a lawsuit by Wheaton College. David Catron notes that one federal judge has enjoined enforcement of the "preventive services" mandate against Hercules Industries in a lawsuit pending in federal court in Colorado.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration is still mulling over a difficult problem: How can it make the provision of abortifacients, contraception and sterilization by religious institutions that oppose it "free" (i.e., at no expense to the institutions). That is to be determined under cover of administrative law in a rulemaking proceeding that will come to fruition on a convenient political timetable which I last wrote about in "Notre Dame v. Sebelius: Ten notes".

We are like the proverbial frogs in water whose temperature is slowly rising. Obamacare must be destroyed before the water boils us alive.

 

Mr. Eldin goes to Washington

Minnesota Sixth District Rep. Michele Bachmann has been under fire lately for her letters to the Inspectors General raising concerns about the possible involvement of the Muslim Brotherhood in activities of the United States government. You've probably heard about the heat she's taken from John McCain and John Boehner for raising concerns specifically about Hillary Clinton deputy chief of staff Huma Abedin, just to mention two fellow Republicans who have weighed in on Michele's concerns. (Our own Paul Mirengoff judiciously assessed the Abedin matter here. See also Andrew McCarthy's assessment here.)

You might not heave heard, however, of one Hani Nour Eldin. I hadn't until I heard Michele speak to our chapter of the Republican Jewish Coalition this past Monday. I had missed the reports of Eli Lake and Tom Joscelyn on Eldin's visit this past June. Toward the end of her remarks, Michele discussed the State Department's decision to provide a visa to Eldin, a member of an Egyptian designated terrorist group. Eldin was not only granted a visa to enter the United States, arguably in violation of federal law. Better yet, he was also also granted a meeting inside the White House with National Security Council officials.

Eldin used the opportunity of his White House visit to call for the release of the the Blind Sheikh, currently serving a life sentence for his role in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. In her remarks, Michele cites the related testimony of Janet Napolitano before the House Homeland Security Committee, reported here. You might not have heard about that either.

What's happening here? Michele fairly observes: "The world has turned upside down under the Obama administration."

 

 

Jets fans should be nervous about Tim Tebow deal, says Obama

Working overtime to obtain votes in Ohio, President Obama called in to 97.3 The Fan, a radio station in Columbus. Obama opined that Jets fans should be "nervous" about the club's acquisition of quarterback Tim Tebow. Obama explained that he is not in favor of a quarterback controversy to start the season and added that although incumbent QB Mark Sanchez is "not Tom Brady yet," he did lead the Jets to two consecutive AFC Championship games.

Mark Sanchez will never be Tom Brady.

Tebow has a strong following, so Obama put in a good word for him:

I think Tim Tebow seems to be a wonderful young man, and he's got just a great winning attitude. He really steps up when things count. But there's going to be a lot of tension in that situation, so it'll be interesting to see how it plays itself out.

Let's hope that Obama has lots of new-found time on his hands to watch the situation unfold in November and December.

Will Ohio voters be impressed by a president who calls sports radio to offer trite opinions about burning issues of the NFL? You wouldn't think so. But Obama's biggest asset is the fact that voters tend still to like him, even though he often seems aloof and is prone to pal around with the elite.

So an appearance on a popular sports show called "The Common Man & The Torg" can't hurt.

If you look up "Living Constitution, advocates of," one of the first entries you will find will be Cass Sunstein, perhaps the most famous (certainly one of the most published) left-leaning legal scholars of our time.  Consider just one of his many titles to get the gist of Sunstein: The Second Bill of Rights: FDR'S Unfinished Revolution and Why We Need It More than Ever.  Do I even need to explain further?  I could go on, but if you're curious about a more complete deconstruction of Sunstein, head over to the Claremont Review of Books and see Joseph Postell's terrific survey of Sunstein's corpus, along with Shep Melnick's review of The Second Bill of Rights, and Lawrence Mead's review of Nudge.  (Though I should add that the greatest beatdown of Sunstein in history was the epic, in-person clash between Sunstein and Hillsdale's great Thomas West at the 1994 APSA meeting in New York-alas, before the YouTube age.  But trust me-it was Sterling Archer-epic: Sunstein was reeling from Tom's highly effective and original assault.)

This is prologue for the news that Sunstein, who came to know Obama when both were on the faculty at the University of Chicago law school, is stepping down from his post as the "regulatory czar" at OMB (technically he runs OIRA, the Office of Independent Regulatory Affairs), to return to Harvard Law School.  Fewer people are more eager to extend the regulatory power of government than Sunstein, and yet his departure is being greeted with cheers from the business community the Left!

From the descriptions in the media, you'd think Sunstein had ushered us back to the Reagan era. From the NY Times account:

"Cass Sunstein is the most well-connected and smartest guy who's ever held the job," said Rena Steinzor, president of the Center for Progressive Reform and a professor at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law. "But he's also done untold damage."

The Puffington Host's article makes for even more comical reading:

White House regulatory czar Cass Sunstein is stepping down after failing to advance federal health and safety rules nearly as much as Obama supporters had hoped . . .

Isn't that lede what poker players call a "tell"?  But the second paragraph of this next bit is where you should make sure you've swallowed your coffee:

Sunstein, who headed the White House's little-known but hugely powerful Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, also got a warm send-off from his immediate boss. White House Office of Management and Budget director Jeffrey Zients credited him with helping design "numerous rules that are, among other things, saving lives on the highways by making vehicles safer and reducing distracted driving; dramatically increasing the fuel economy of the nation's cars and trucks; protecting public health by reducing air pollution; making our food supply safer; and protecting against discrimination on the basis of disability and sexual orientation."

But that is a modest record in the context of the wholesale deregulation during the Bush/Cheney era and the unprecedented regulatory failures of the recent past: financial crisis; the BP oil spill; the Upper Big Branch mine explosion; a bevy of food- and toy-related health scares and the imminent dangers of climate change.

Critics said he did more damage than good. "That's small progress in comparison to the rules he killed," said Rena Steinzor, a law professor at the University of Maryland and president of the pro-regulation Center for Progressive Reform.

"Wholesale deregulation during the Bush/Cheney era"???  They must mean deregulatory things like Sarbanes-Oxley and McCain-Feingold, new CAFE standards for cars, and several new environmental regulations (some of them court-ordered) like the off-road diesel rule, just to name one.  In fact, I can't think of a single significant deregulation of anything during the Bush-Cheney administration.

That Sunstein isn't left enough for today's activist Left, and that an adult human being could write of "deregulation" during the Bush-Cheney years, shows how great the gulf is between Left and Right today.

 

The Weekly Winston: "Gigantic Boiler" Edition

A message to Conor Friedersdorf

Yesterday we posted David Gelernter's response to Atlantic staff writer Conor Friedersdorf's critique of "Why is this failed president above water?" Friedersorf's critique of Professor Gelernter's Power Line post is based on Obama quotes supposedly showing biblical echoes in Obama's speeches and writings, contrary to a point Professor Gelernter makes in his post.

Friedersdorf sent us a link to his critique and suggested that a correction was in order. Before receiving Professor Gelernter's response to Friedersdorf's critique, I sent Friedersdorf this message, which I thought might be of interest to readers:

I don't find your Obama quotes meaningful or persuasive. Your piece seems to me like nitpicking. I don't think a correction is warranted. I think the question remains in the zone of opinion. Moreover, given the highly public nature of the Obama speeches you cite, I don't think that our readers would be led astray by Professor Gelernter into believing that Obama never cites "God" in his speeches or has failed to discover the political uses of Christianity. I may be wrong, but that's my take.

I'm curious though. I understand that you used to work for Andrew Sullivan at the Atlantic. Sullivan's Atlantic site was a torrent of misinformation. Back in 2009, Sullivan posted an item about how Churchill fastidiously opposed the use of torture against captured German spies during World War II and called for the prosecution of Dick Cheney. At his 100-days press conference Obama relied on Sullivan's post for his understanding of the relevant history. Yet Sullivan's post was, as you would put it, demonstrably false.

I may have missed it, but I don't recall that the Atlantic ever corrected that post. Have you ever taken a look at whether the Atlantic should append a correction to it? It seems to me a rather more consequential and revealing error than the one you assert Gelernter has fallen prey to. Looking into it might even deepen your understanding of the effects of partisanship on the brain. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

The Senator Harry Reid wants most to protect

I have offered my take on the Senate battlefield, but Harry Reid's view is worth far more than mine. And from what I'm hearing, the Senate Majority Leader is fixated on the Montana race, in which the incumbent Democrat Jon Tester is trying to hold off challenger Rep. Denny Rehberg.

There isn't much Reid can do right now by way of passing legislation or even getting judicial nominees confirmed this close to a presidential election. This leaves him ample time to make reckless and absurd allegations against Mitt Romney and play the Godfather on behalf of a protege.

Legislatively, he can also call for votes designed to make Democratic Senators look and good and Republican Senators not so good. I'm told that, on this front, helping Sen. Tester is Reid's top priority. Indeed, some say its Reid's top priority, period.

My analysis of the Senate battleground shows, I think, the centrality of the Montana race. Tester's victory in 2008 proved to be a necessary condition for the Dems gaining control. Holding the Montana seat may be a necessary condition for retaining control.

Virginia and Massachusetts are also vital. But there's nothing Reid can do for the Dems in Virgina, where neither candidate is a current U.S. Senator. And in Massachusetts, incumbent Republican Scott Brown seems prepared, understandably, to vote with the Democrats and the Maine Republicans for the duration of the session to the extent necessary. Meanwhile, Republicans, understandably, are prepared give Brown a pass. So Reid can't do much to influence this race.

Thus, Montana is where the crafty Majority Leader focuses. If you wish to counter Reid and defeat his guy, you can contribute to the Rehberg campaign here.

 

Is Obama Slipping?

The media-formerly-known-as-mainstream are doing their best -as a commentator who is more outspoken than I am put it-to "drag Barack Obama's sorry ass across the finish line." We see this every day; a particularly egregious example was the press coverage of Mitt Romney's excellent trip overseas. The Media Research Center analyzed the news coverage of Romney's trip and concluded that an astonishing 86% of network news stories focused on Romney's supposed "gaffes." If you watched the video of "reporters" from the New York Times, Washington Post and CNN heckling Romney in Poland, you don't need a scorecard to know which presidential campaign they are trying to boost.

In the past few days, some of these same news organizations have released polls purporting to show that Obama has pulled into a significant lead in several key states. But if you look deeper, you always find that the pollsters have over-sampled Democrats. It is no surprise that if a pollster asks 32% Democrats and 18% Republicans whom they favor for president, the Democrat will come out ahead. Strange as it seems, I think the pollsters and the news organizations they work for are doing this on purpose, in hopes of buoying Obama's candidacy. Otherwise, wouldn't they occasionally over-sample Republicans?

So one has to pierce through a lot of clutter to get any real sense of how the race is going. Given that actions speak louder than words, one thing you can do is look at where the candidates are spending their money: nearly all of Obama's campaign spending (and Romney's too) is directed at states that Obama carried in 2008. This means that notwithstanding the media cheerleading, Obama is playing defense, not offense.

You can also follow Rasmussen Reports. Rasmussen's polls are more meaningful than most others because 1) he samples likely voters, and 2) he continuously tests voters' party affiliation, and weights survey results to reflect the current composition of the electorate. (Republicans have a slight edge in party ID, but essentially the electorate is 1/3 Republican, 1/3 Democrat, and 1/3 independent.) Because of that methodology, Rasmussen's polls do not jump around randomly depending on the sample composition, and they are better able to measure actual trends.

So it is interesting to see how the matchup between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney has looked over the months:

Romney has generally led Obama ever since he became the clear front-runner for the GOP nomination. As always, the numbers bounce around some, and Romney's lead among likely voters has widened and narrowed. On several occasions, Obama has briefly taken the lead. But the overall trend is clearly in Romney's favor.

Currently, the tide seems to be running against the president. Romney leads him 47% to 43%. If the adage that undecided voters tend to break against the incumbent holds true, Obama is in a pretty deep hole. Moreover, voter approval of Obama seems to be slipping. His overall approval rating stands at only 44%, a number that, if it holds through November, would preclude re-election. Even worse for Obama is his Approval Index, the difference between those who strongly approve and strongly disapprove of his performance. Since early in his term, a plurality of voters have strongly disapproved of Obama. In today's survey, 45% strongly disapprove while only 22% strongly approve. I think we can assume that none of those 45% are going to vote for Obama, while conversely, there is a fair amount of soft Obama support that could be eroded. Given those numbers, Obama's Approval Index now stands at -23, which is just awful:

How significant are these numbers? There is a long way to go until November, and there have been several prior occasions when it looked as though Romney may be pulling away. It is entirely possible that Obama might again bounce back. Still, his prognosis is not good. He is nowhere near 50% approval with voters, and it is hard to see what could happen in the next 100 days to get him to that level. A plurality of voters strongly disapprove of his performance, and many of them will not only vote but will work to elect his opponent. Many voters still have little knowledge of Romney, and he will get a bounce from the Republican convention, and possibly from his vice-presidential selection as well. Most important, perhaps, is the fact that so far, Obama has vastly out-spent Romney on television advertising. Romney and his supporters have a great deal of money stored up for when the campaign officially begins, after the conventions. So the stars do not appear to be aligned well for the president.

My guess is that this is why the Democratic Party's media arm has been working overtime in recent weeks. They are trying to pump life into a campaign that, viewed objectively, is in trouble.

 

Tales from the Public Sector: Train Wreck Edition

It's an old joke that may have originated with Milton Friedman (though Ronald Reagan liked to tell variations, too) that if the federal government took over Saudi Arabia, within a few years there'd be a shortage of sand.  (Just look how well government control of water works out.)  Just three days ago we noted here the epic failure of the U.S. Postal Service to avoid a long-term descent into bankruptcy despite having a legal monopoly for its core product.  Today's tales from the public sector department carries the news that Amtrak loses bucketloads of money-$833 million over the last decade-selling food on its trains, despite the fact that it has a completely captive audience, and charges $9.50 for a burger.  Think McDonalds or a private food service contractor could do this badly if they tried?

The report from the AtlanticWire has some shocking, only-in-government details:

Amtrak has been trying to figure out how to break even on food since Congress required it to do so in 1981, and it's never been able to, The New York Times' Ron Nixon reports. That's because two different Amtrak departments oversee food service, and they haven't coordinated with one another to stop losses, largely from employee theft, Amtrak inspector general Ted Alves told the hearing of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Some 87 percent of that theft happens on long-haul routes, Alves said. In a report last year, he outlined some of the schemes, including shorting cash register sales, inflating first-class meal checks, selling non-Amtrak items, and plain old stealing. Amtrak has some plans in place to counter that theft and waste, including a loss-prevention unit, more cashless purchases, and a better inventory-tracking system. But so far, Amtrak's food service program still costs it, and by extension us, a fortune.

Of course, fixing these problems might require crossing a labor union.  Can't have that.

 

Obama administration moves to keep the poor under its thumb in Galveston

Yesterday's Wall Street Journal ran a revealing story (subscription only) about the federal government's attempt to perpetuate low income housing projects in Galveston, Texas. Four years ago, Hurricane Ike destroyed 569 public-housing units. The Democratic mayor wanted to rebuild the housing as part of a "mixed-income" development. But he was defeated by a conservative businessman who promised not to rebuild the units. Instead, he proposed to issue housing vouchers to displaced residents so they would have options, including finding housing near where they have job opportunities.

Enter the feds. According to the Journal, U.S. officials have threatened to cut-off almost half a billion dollars of aid to Galveston unless it rebuilds the old, low-income units.

The feds talk, euphemistically, in terms of rebuilding the units as "mixed-income" housing. But the chairman of the Galveston Housing Authority is probably closer to the mark when he says they are "like communities of the poor [that] destroy people's incentives to do better."

Why does the Obama administration want to keep poor people where they are, instead of offering them the choice of finding housing where they might well prefer to live? Perhaps because Obama likes the current incentive structure that keeps the poor beholden to the government and to the Democrats. And perhaps because, as Stanley Kurtz argues, the administration wants to keep the population concentrated in the city and to suppress the population of the suburbs.

 

David Gelernter responds to Conor Friedersdorf

Over at the Atlantic, Conor Friedersdorf has posted a critique of Professor David Gelernter's Power Line post "What keeps this failed president above water?" Friedersdorf takes issue with Professor Gelernter's assertion that Obama "is post-religious: he took his family to a church where the religion seemed to be America-hatred. There are no biblical echoes in his speeches, as there have been in the speeches of so many presidents, left and right, and such other American leaders as Martin Luther King...." Friedersdorf gives his post the title "This is your brain on partisanship." Professor Gelernter has forwarded his response to Fridersdorf's post. I thought readers might be interested in the exchange. Here is Professor Gelernter's response:

I appreciate Mr Friedersdorf 's generous references to my work: many thanks.

But he hasn't shown me that Obama isn't "post-religious." Mr Friedersdorf is absolutely right that instead of writing "There are no biblical echoes in his [Obama's] speeches," I should have written that are almost no biblical echoes: I apologize to Power Line's readers and to Mr Friedersdorf. Of course the president refers to religion and Christianity occasionally; he is an American politician and no idiot. It's the gratingly superficial nature of these references that makes Obama seem as if he doesn't give a damn about Christianity or the Bible. And I'll return to that word "seem," which Mr Friedersdorf calls a weasel word.

Here are Mr Friedersdorf's examples from what he calls "the two biggest speeches of Obama's career." First, his four cites from Obama's 2004 Convention keynote, with the judge's ruling in each case: do these excerpts cite or echo the Bible or do they not? (Full disclosure: I'm the judge.)

"...our pride is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declaration made over two hundred years ago: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal... that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.' That is the true genius of America, a faith..."

No. This is of course a quote from Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration. In the Bible there are no "inalienable rights," there are duties, to God and man.

"It is that fundamental belief - I am my brother's keeper, I am my sisters' keeper - that makes this country work."

Yes: a reference to Cain and Abel in Genesis. ("Am I my brother's keeper?")

"The pundits, the pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue States: red states for Republicans, blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states."

No, unless it's the adjective "awesome"-which has seen an awesome lot of traffic in recent years.

"Hope in the face of difficulty, hope in the face of uncertainty, the audacity of hope: In the end, that is God's greatest gift to us, the bedrock of this nation, a belief in things not seen, a belief that there are better days ahead."

No. This is Obama's speechwriters, not the Bible. Unconditional hope in the future is certainly not Christian; Christian eschatology tends to be distinctively negative in tone (Dies irae, dies illa-days of wrath and of doom, from the requiem mass; or look at the face Michelangelo gave Jesus in the Last Judgment; and then there is Puritanism....). Jewish eschatology is sometimes universalist and optimistic; often not. In much of the Hebrew Bible, there is no eschatology; and one of the deepest of all biblical statements on man's fate is the story of Moses, who dies at the very edge of the Promised Land without ever setting foot in it.

Of course the Israeli national anthem is HaTikah, The hope, based on a Hebrew poem by Naphtali Herz Imber. But somehow I doubt that Obama was basing himself on that particular national anthem.

Now, the inaugural address.

* ...in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

Yes: childish things. The "God-given promise that all are equal" sounds like another reference to the Declaration. The "full measure of happiness" echoes Lincoln's last full measure of devotion.

* "This is the source of our confidence - the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny."

No. (What does it mean, anyway?)

* "Thank you. God bless you. And God bless the United States of America."

No.

Mr Friedersdorf accuses me of using "weasel words" when I write that Obama "took his family to a church where the religion seemed to be America-hatred [his bold, to show where I am weaseling around]." But there's nothing weasly about "seems" when you are reporting an impression instead of a fact. Why seems it so particular to thee, Mr Friedersdorf? And that's precisely the point: Obama seems to have no religion, to be "post-religious." I don't pretend to know the man's inner life. But having known many religious Jews and Christians, I can say that Obama doesn't sound like one to me.

Consider the sheer superficiality of his biblical and religious references. "God bless you. And God bless the United States of America." Does that make you Christian or Jewish? Or is it the mere automatic repetition of phrases that are said on a million occasions without a second thought? Irving Berlin wrote a song called "God Bless America." Does that make him religious? He also wrote that he was dreaming about a white Christmas, just like the ones he used to know. Of course he was a Jew, of sorts. He was born in Russia and grew up on the Lower East Side.

Politicians say lots of things to win us over. Our jobs are to judge whether these things are sincere or mere song lyrics designed to be catchy. Obama's references to Christianity strike me as song lyrics. My guess is that lots of people agree, and that this explains the public's amusing difficulty in deciding whether he is Christian or Muslim. Jimmy Carter was one of the worst presidents in American history, as bad as Obama (almost); but no one doubts his perfect sincerity when he speaks of his Christian faith.

Finally: Mr Friedersdorf quotes Obama's speech on race from the 2008 campaign. One sentence includes a string of biblical cites: "I imagined the stories of ordinary black people merging with the stories of David and Goliath, Moses and Pharaoh, the Christians in the lion's den, Ezekiel's field of dry bones." Of course those weren't Christians in the lion's den, that was Daniel and he was a Jew. I don't get the impression that Obama has either the Bible or Christianity in sharp focus.

A few nights ago Van Jones tweeted that his son had set up a lemonade stand and he was really excited because he wanted to save $5, spend $3 and give $3 to someone who really needs it.
