U.S. FORCES ON SYRIAN BORDER- ARE WE PREPARING FOR THE NEXT WAR?
- Posted by Michael CHILDS, Admin II on July 31, 2012
-
- WND has reported that the Russians have information that U.S. troops are near the Turkish border with Syria, a senior Syrian official told WND today.
The official said the Russians observed American forces taking part in Turkish military measures to secure the Syria-Turkey borders. The official said the information about a U.S. military presence in Turkey has led to a debate within the Syrian leadership about whether to move the Syrian military to its highest alert level. Currently, the Syrian army is on its second highest alert.

Russia is playing a very dangerous game sending in attack helicopters to murrder the rebels. We do not need troops on the ground; we can train and arm the rebels and use cruise missles if need be. Watch for the shoulder fired missles to be in the hands of the rebels. We also have 3 carriers in the region with the most advanced fighter jets in the world.
While the presence of U.S. forces in Turkey could not be immediately verified, it is not the first time the American military has been accused of aiding the insurgency targeting Bashar al-Assad's regime. In February, WND was first to report the U.S., Turkey and Jordan were running a training base for the Syrian rebels in the Jordanian town of Safawi in the country's northern desert region, according to several knowledgeable Egyptian and Arab security officials speaking to WND. The security officials also claimed Saudi Arabia was sending weapons to the rebels via surrogates, including through Druze and Christian leaders in Lebanon such as Druze leader Walid Jumblatt; Saudi-Lebanese billionaire Saad Hariri, who recently served as Lebanon's prime minister; and senior Lebanese opposition leader Samir Farid Geagea. The U.S. repeatedly has denied directly arming the rebels, stating it is only providing non-lethal aid. Any aid to the rebels is highly controversial. WND reported in May there is growing collaboration between the Syrian opposition and al-Qaida as well as evidence the opposition is sending weapons to jihadists in Iraq, according to an Egyptian security official previously speaking to WND.
The US military are being used and abused as puppets of the elite, the new world order and people here buy into these wars like dumbbells. WAKE UP - this is nothing but a rouse to take control over everything. Are the US military/intelligence on the Syrian border? If they aren't then they are not doing their jobs. As the US has 1-2,000 known military personnel in Turkey it's hardly a stretch to conclude that some may be down south taking a peek at what's going on.
There are now widespread reports of al-Qaida fighters among the ranks of the opposition, with some jihadist branches reportedly officially joining the U.S.-supported Free Syrian Army. The opposition is currently intensifying the fight against Assad's forces in the key city of Aleppo amid claims, denied by the rebels, that the Syrian military has retaken the city. WND reported that Assad held a meeting last week in which he set the goal of entirely quelling the opposition targeting his regime by October, according to a senior Syrian official. The official, speaking to WND on condition of anonymity, said Assad ordered his military to rid the Damascus region, including Aleppo, of rebels by the end of Ramadan on Aug. 18. He said Assad believes he can clear the opposition from the region of Homs by Sept. 10 and end the insurgency by October. The official admitted the coming weeks will be "bloody." He affirmed Russia stands squarely in the Syrian camp.
To think that we're not going into Syria and Iran is foolish. Our forces are controlled by someone other than our 'elected officials', this is obvious. Unfortunately, the end game is the Big One. Russia and China are ready for the United States. However, with our H.A.A.R.P. weapon up and running, I feel very sad for the peoples of the world that will feel Tesla's machine and its' capabilities.
One thing is for sure, we are in troubling times and we all need to get prepared.
This is one dilemma I don't see a solution for. Assad is allied with Iran, and al Qeada is allying with the rebels. Looks like a no win situation for the US.
Assad will not step down -- he has the military forces to fight well into next year. I don't think the rebels can last many months longer. Our best bet is to stay out of the conflict in that area. While I don't like Assad, I don't see any good outcome for that country if it's run by various rebel groups.

Dear Members and Friends,
As Milton Friedman's 100th birthday winds down, we remember how the most influential American economist of the 20th century rescued free enterprise from the death grip of stifling Keynesian policies which had dominated the US domestic scene from 1930 until 1980 with brief respites during the Eisenhower and Kennedy Administrations.
In 1981, President Ronald Reagan, relying on the supply-side, free enterprise theories of Milton Friedman, ushered in an unprecedented period of American growth and prosperity.
Unbelievably, Milton Friedman's model for economic dynamism has been decimated during the past 31/2 years by an administration that takes its cues from the discredited John Maynard Keynes, the father of Keynesian economics.
Whether its the outrageous spending, the overburdening taxation, or the crippling regulations--failed Keynesian policies are clearly in vogue.
There is one added twist, however.
The current administration and its allies have singled out industries and companies for annihilation. The coal industry and Chick-fil A come immediately to mind.
We cannot standby and allow a company like Chick-fil A, with thousands of employees nationwide, to be threatened by thought police bullies like Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Philadelphia City Councilman James Kenney.
That's why we have called for a month-long buycott of Chick-fil A, beginning tomorrow, August 1st. (Please read the press release below.)
NBC 10 is carrying the story of our buycott, tonight, during its 11 PM broadcast (immediately
following Olympic coverage). The following article, by Catherine Brown, appears on the
NBC 10 website.
http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/politics/Tea-Party-Urges-Chick-fil-A-BuyCott-164519666.html
As always, thank you for your interest and support.
See you at Chick-fil A.
On behalf of the Association Board,
Teri Adams
For Immediate Release Contact: Tea Party Association Calls for Month-Long Chick-fil-A BuyCott; Says Fast Food Chain Faces Discrimination from Philadelphia Councilman, Boston and Chicago Mayors, Among Others Philadelphia, PA (July 31, 2012) -- The Independence Hall Tea Party Association, the largest independent Tea Party group in the tri-state region, is calling upon its members and supporters to participate in a month-long 'BuyCott' of Chick-fil-A, beginning tomorrow. The effort, being held in conjunction with a nationwide call by Governor Mike Huckabee to hold a Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day on August 1st, is to show support for a company that has come under increasing attack because its president, Dan Cathy, dared to defend 'traditional marriage' -- and did so using a biblical context. "In America, leftist like Philadelphia Councilman Jim Kenny and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel support all types of diversity except when it comes to a diversity of opinion," said Association President, Teri Adams. "To threaten government action against a law abiding company solely because its president voices an opinion that these men disagree with is completely irrational, discriminatory, and hateful. "To seek retribution by proposing a city council resolution condemning Chik-fil-A or advocating a zoning prohibition against Chick-fil-A is a simultaneous attack by government against freedom of speech, freedom of religion, property rights and free enterprise," said Ms. Adams. "Both the mayors of Chicago and Boston emphatically stated that Chick-fil-A does not belong in their respective cities. They are claiming this--not because Chick-fil-A has violated any health or tax codes--but simply because they are intolerant of the rights of others." "We believe thousands of our members and friends will show their support for Chick-fil-A by dining at Chick-fil-A restaurants tomorrow and throughout the month of August." # # #
The Independence Hall Tea Party Association formed after historic February 28 and April 18, 2009 Tea Parties on Independence Mall. It is the oldest and largest independent grassroots Tea Party organization in the tri-state (DE, NJ, PA) region and encompasses the 5th leading media market in the United States.

Activate: How to turn the 2012 election from a close call to a mandate
Last night, Glenn focused on the importance of commitment. He was the first to admit, a lot of last night's show was something you had heard before - but it's important to start at the beginning and to make sure you know what you believe before you get put into action. And tonight, Glenn revealed ways for you to really get moving!
Tonight, the focus of the show was "Activate" - and it was all about the election and how you can make sure that one way or another - 2012 is a year for a mandate for or against the progressives. And if you think it doesn't matter just take a look at what is happening right now in Wisconsin. Progressives and unions are doing everything they can to make sure that Walker loses. It's a microcosm to what is happening around the country, and Glenn thought it was so important that he recapped it on tonight's show (in under three minutes!):

Last Thursday, July 26, over 16,000 grassroots patriots came together in Dallas, Texas - like Patriots of the past who rallied against the British Crown - for an historic reawakening of the conservative movement. The event was FreePAC; the grassroots answer to establishment political action conferences and the launching pad of the Hostile Takeover.
FreePAC was held as a convention-style gathering to ignite a grassroots uprising to Take America Back in 2012 and beyond. Featuring a veritable "who's who" of conservative superstars - including Glenn Beck, Senators Rand Paul, Mike Lee, and Jim DeMint, Dana Loesch, Deneen Borelli, CL Bryant and others - FreePAC galvanized individuals who truly believe in limited government and laid the groundwork for the Hostile Takeover of America's entrenched political interests in Washington.
For those patriots who could not attend FreePAC and those who wish to share their experience with their friends and families, FreedomWorks is making available a limited run of commemorative DVDs. You don't want to miss what Senator Rand Paul had to say about the role of government!
Celebrate the inaugural FreePAC by donating $20 today and we will send you a commemorative DVD. For $25, you can receive the official FreePAC T-shirt. Make a $40 donation, and we will send you both the DVD and the T-shirt. Click here to get your FreePAC gear right now!

Half price off 2013 Summit Registration until august 15th
Our seventh annual Washington Summit was our best to date. Never before have we been so warmly received by our nation's leaders in Washington. And never before have we had such an immediate impact. In fact, legislation we support to enhance U.S.-Israel security cooperation was passed even before our Summit was over!
Let's face it -- there's nothing like having thousands of pro-Israel Christians from every state in the Union in town to focus Congress on the need to stand with Israel!
As our delegates discovered, the very fact that they cared enough about Israel to travel all the way to Washington gave them immediate credibility, influence and favor with their members of Congress. Increasingly, Members of Congress and their staff are getting to know our members by name and are staying in touch with them after they return home.
Our DC summit is not a one-time event. It's an annual opportunity for you to become an influential spokesman for Israel in your community. We give you the training. We schedule your appointments. All you need to do is show up and stand up for Israel.
Whether or not you were able to join us this year, we pray that you'll plan on joining us next year. Our 2013 Washington Summit will be held on July 22- 24. While the trip is not inexpensive, making your decision to join us now will give you almost a full year to save up for this powerful experience.
We'd like to encourage you to plan ahead -- and help you save enough -- by providing you with additional savings if you make your decision soon. If you register for the 2013 Summit by August 15th, you will only have to pay half the full Summit price.
We pray that we will see you in Washington, D.C. July 22- 24, 2013.
May God Bless You and Those That You Love,

Video: The "You Didn't Build That" ad war heats up
Posted: 26 Jul 2012 11:57 AM PDT
Following President Obama's recent comments regarding how he believes successful businesses are created and maintained, the Romney campaign seized on the President's statement when he said "if you've got a business, you didn't build that," and has turned it into an ad campaign. The President, as expected, was compelled to respond.

Monday, July 23, 11:30 PM
Dear Members and Friends,
Just in: Contempt of Congress AG Eric Holder has ordered the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate
Pennsylvania's newly enactedVoter ID law--adding an additional hurdle for the law to overcome if it's to be implemented on election day, Tuesday, November 6.
http://www.philly.com/philly/news/homepage/163500696.html
The timing of the investigation is quite suspect since a Commonwealth Court hearing challenging the law is set to begin in Harrisburg this Wednesday, July 25.
The hearing, expected to last 5-7 days, is open to the public. (We encourage you to attend if possible--details below.)
And what usual suspects do we find standing behind the lawsuit? Why the
American Civil Liberties Union and their allies, of course.
The Voter ID law, which enhances voter integrity by making voter fraud more difficult to conduct, was signed by Gov. Tom Corbett earlier this year. Its passage has obviously frightened the Obama administration and its cohorts.
In other matters: Association member Barb Campbell has forwarded a general request by Gov. Mike Huckabee to make Wednesday, August 1, 'Chick Fil-A Appreciation Day.'
In line with our Black Friday BuyCott (2011) and Whole Foods BuyCott (2009), we'll call this our 'Chick Fil-A BuyCott, 2012.'
In Gov. Huckabee's own words:
"....The goal is simple: Let's affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick Fil-A on Wednesday, August 1....
"This effort is not being launched by the Chick Fil-A company....
Simply affirm [your] appreciation for a company run by Christian principles by showing up on Wednesday, August 1 or by participating online--tweeting your support or sending a message on Facebook."
Commonwealth Court Hearing on Voter ID
When: Wednesday, July 25, 10 AM.
(Hearing to last several more days--beginning at 9 AM.)
Where: Courtroom 3002, Pennsylvania Judicial Center, 601
Commonwealth Ave., Harrisburg, PA.
Who: Hearing before Judge Robert Simpson and open to the public.
We'll try to arrange car pools for those who are interested in
attending. Please let us know if you are driving and would like
company or are in need of a ride by calling 215.663.1983.
Many thanks!
Chick Fil-A BuyCott
When: Wednesday, August 1, during restaurant hours.
Where: Your neighborhood Chick Fil-A.
Hope to see you!
On behalf of the Association Board,
Teri Adams

The PAOLI VICTORY CENTER is the location of our August 10th VF Patriots Mtg. This is a phone bank location with 15 phones in Ste. 300 of the DEPOT SHOPPES 21 Plank Avenue, Paoli, PA , behind the Burger King on Lancaster Ave. Salome Gasabile is the Victory Field Director here and she'd welcome you ANY time. Already 10 people have volunteered to work the phones that night, but MORE are needed to cover EVERY phone from 6:00 - 9:00 P.M. and relieve each other for dinner breaks, etc. Peg Layden Phone Bank Chairman 610 644-6161 STOP the Smartmeter NOW Dear Patriots, Just to make you aware, Smartmeters are here. After thorough investigation and talking with PECO, they are currently installing Smartmeters in PA. Several people have contacted PECO and told them that we did not want the Smartmeter. Their response is they run the risk of having their electricity turned off. Just a background on Smartmeters: In 2008, Act 129 was passed and signed into law by Governor Rendell to make Smartmeters mandatory in PA. How will this affect you? You will be required to install a smart meter in your home which will be monitored by your electric company on a minute to minute basis. The video below explains how the smartmeter was started and where they plan to go with this which will be monitored constantly (new utilities will have smart meter chips in them. Do you want PECO or the Government monitoring your electricity usage? If this is such a great thing, why is it being forced upon us and if not taken, you take the risk of having your power turned off. Once on the grid, the government through PECO will be able to monitor each and control all of your electric utilities. Do you want the department of energy monitoring your usage of electric via PECO and possibly turning off your electric and certain peak hours (as explained in this video). http://www.wfmz.com/news/news-regional-berks/Met-Ed-customers-seeing-red-over-green-program/-/121418/15203070/-/prtufy/-/index.html What you can do: Representative Reese from Westmoreland County has introduced two bills which are in the Consumer Affairs Committee. ONE BILL WOULD ALLOW FOR OPTING OUT OF GETTING A SMART METER THE OTHER BILL WOULD REQUIRE CONSUMER CONSENT BEFORE INFORMATION FROM THE METER COULD BE SHARED WITH A GOVERNMENT AGENCY. Please contact the people listed in the link and let them know that we want these bills brought to the floor for the vote. This is our local electric company being used for the UN Agenda 21 (Sustainable Development). We need everyone's involvement so pass on to everyone you know. Let's make an effort to get this out of committee. http://www.repreese.com/NewsItem.aspx?NewsID=13371 http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/cteeInfo/cteeInfo.cfm?cde=10&body=H Explanation of Smartmeters is in this link. It is a little long, but you need to see how the global market is taking over our liberties. http://www.freedomadvocates.org/video/watch/129_technocracy_sustainable_development_and_the_smart_grid/ By the way, PECO took 200 million in stimulus money in PA to implement the smartmeters. They are using taxpayers money to enslave us. http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2009/10 Please contact state representatives immediately. Let's protect our properties rights. http://stopsmartmeters.org/how-you-can-stop-smart-meters/ I have contacted PECO and told them not to install a smartmeter on my house. I would suggest doing the same with your electric company. They need a loud outcry from the american people. I will also be putting this sticker on my meter. I will be editing the wording down below, but here it is. http://turn.org/downloads/TURN-Do-Not-Install-the-Smart-Meter.pdf?utm_source=turnweb&utm_medium=download-sign&utm_content=DIA%2Bpage&utm_campaign=smart-meter Blessings, Mark, Betty, Jeff, Joe & Michele VFP Steering Committee |

By allowing our attention to be focused exclusively on the danger and prevention of terrorism, we ignore the many other ways we are being attacked. Specifically, we are missing what our Islamist enemies call their 'civilization jihad' - a form of warfare that employs manipulative financial techniques, lawfare, infiltration of our civil institutions and government and insidious information dominance. Together, these have the effect of exploiting our liberties and governing structures against us, so that our leaders wind up imposing the very anti-American values that our enemies promote.
Welcome to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within - a 10-part, web-based video briefing that is designed to explain why and how this is happening.
It addresses a threat most Americans are unaware even exists within our country, let alone the degree of peril it represents. The threat is the totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine its adherents call "shariah" and the organized, disciplined and increasingly successful efforts by such adherents-- most especially the Muslim Brotherhood-- to bring it here.
We are making this course available in the hope of encouraging, informing and broadening support for national efforts to defeat the insinuation into this country of shariah's anti-constitutional and seditious program.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization
Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.
The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

About Hillsdale College
Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."
Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs. Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:
- Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
- Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
- Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care
The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

The Cybersecurity Act of 2012 (S. 3414) is still alive in the U.S. Senate, and could be moved for a vote any day now. That's why you and I must remain vigilant! Please, call your Senators IMMEDIATELY and demand they vote against this bill - including opposing cloture - at every opportunity. As I've already told you, S. 3414 would create yet another government bureaucracy (a "National Cybersecurity Council"), and it could guarantee companies engage in more invasions of our privacy. But the truth is, that's not all. The Cybersecurity Act could also threaten your Second Amendment freedoms. In fact, a handful of anti-gun Senators - led by Chuck Schumer - are attempting to add the Schumer "Magazine Ban" as an amendment to the Cybersecurity Act. That's why it's vital your U.S. Senators oppose the Cybersecurity Act at every opportunity. So please click here to find your Senators' information. Since the vote could come at any time, please call right away to urge them to oppose cloture on S. 3414! In Liberty, Matt Hawes Vice President P.S. The Cybersecurity Act of 2012 (S. 3414) is still under consideration by the Senate and could come up virtually any day. Not only that, but a handful of Senators - led by New York Senator Chuck Schumer - are trying to insert an anti-gun provision in, as well! So please call your Senators right away to urge them to oppose cloture on S. 3414 and allow their constituents time to look over the final bill. As always, if you're able at this time, you can help C4L expand our efforts to protect liberty on all fronts by chipping in $10 or $25.

Victory Center" on Facebook
-Gabriel Malor
Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on. RedState Morning Briefing
For August 1, 2012
1. RedState Gathering 2012: The Agenda #RSG12
The RedState Gathering starts tomorrow - well really Friday morning. Ted Cruz of Texas will kick us off Friday and Governor Rick Scott is going to join us for a cruise down the St. Johns River that evening.
There is still time to register. Go to www.redstategathering.com if you are interested. In the meantime, on Twitter we're using the hashtag #RSG12.
Here now is the complete and final RedState Gathering 2012 agenda. Oh, and if you come, you might just get a sneak peek at a redesign of RedState coming very soon.
2. The Establishment's Near Sexual Advances on Ted Cruz Are About to Begin
It turned into an atrociously nasty runoff. The same crew who failed Governor Rick Perry's Presidential bid has now also sunk David Dewhurst's bid for the Senate and spent tens of millions of dollars in the process. Along the way they damaged Governor Perry's credibility with the tea party and picked every scab possible to make Ted Cruz's election as painful as possible.
Who knows - maybe they'll cut Dewhurst a deal on a gubernatorial bid in two years.
Despite all the barbs and lies and dirty tricks, including phone calls to Cruz voters during yesterday's primary telling them to vote today, Ted Cruz won.
It is a very satisfying victory. Ted has spoken at every RedState Gathering and will be the first speaker at this year's Gathering too. He will make a fine Senator.
A lot of people are going to give lots of credit to lots of people for Ted Cruz's win. Success has many fathers. A lot of people will also make a lot of wild claims about what it means for the GOP and its supposed radical drift right - a drift right that in 2010 saw it pick up more electoral victories than any time since the late 1800?s.
One thing a lot of people will fail to comment on is that the Tea Party victories of 2010 have morphed into anti-establishment victories in 2012. On both the left and right, the base hates its leaders. It has moved beyond distrust to contempt.
3. The Department of Labor's attempt to cover for Obama
What happens when you combine the Budget Control Act of 2011 with huge mandatory cuts in the defense budget? Lots of layoffs and unemployment, that's what. And what happens - or is supposed to happen - when mass layoffs occur? According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, there is supposed to be a 60-day notice of the impending layoffs. And herein lies the problem...for Barack Obama.
4. Brilliant, Ohio coal plant closes: guess why?
Well, your ability to guess why the Murray Energy Corporation today announced that it is closing a mine in Brilliant, Ohio will be largely dependent on whether you rely on local news or not. If you're just paying attention to local news... you won't be told at all why a coal mine that employed 239 people at its peak laid off 24 of its remaining 56 employees today, with the remaining to be (hopefully) integrated into the company elsewhere; in fact, you won't even be told that the mine employed that many people directly. But if you go to the company's own press release... yeah. That's a different story.

French swimmer stuns Olympic Games with a silent tattoo
July 31, 2012 By Norman Lebrecht
The IOC's refusal to permit a minute's silence for victims of the Munich terror attack 40 years ago has already provoked a protest from the Italian team, who staged a minute's solidarity silence outside the Israeli team's quarters.
Now a French swimmer has found another method of commemoration. Fabien Gilot, a member of the gold medal-winning 4 x 100 team raised his arm in triumph to reveal a tattoo in Hebrew reading: אני כלום בלעדיהם - in English: I am nothing without them.
He explained that it was a tribute to his grandmother's Jewish husband, Max Goldschmidt, an Auschwitz survivor and a huge influence on his life.
It's a poignant counterpoint to the recent furore over the Bayreuth swastika tattoo.

RJC Releases New Web Ad: "Backtrack"
Highlighting President Obama's flip-flop on Jerusalem
Washington, D.C. (July 31, 2012) -- The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) today released a new web ad focused on President Obama's flip-flop on Jerusalem.
The ad, entitled, "Backtrack" highlights then-candidate Barack Obama's statements about Jerusalem being the capital of Israel and contrasts them with White House spokesman Jay Carney's inability to answer a reporter's question: "What city does this administration consider to be the capital of Israel, Jerusalem or Tel Aviv?"
RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks said, "Candidate Obama gained support in the pro-Israel community by saying, " The fact is that Jerusalem IS Israel's capital." As President, Obama has backed away from that assurance. This is another broken promise from Barack Obama, one the American people will remember in November. It's another reason why many in the Jewish community have buyer's remorse."
The ad can be seen here.

The Engine Behind ACT! for America's Growth By Kelly Cook, National Field Director Many of our supporters have commented on the meteoric growth of our organization over the past 5 years. The growth curve has been steep by design. We understand that small organizations can win small victories, but it takes large organizations to truly win the big ones-victories that are culture changing and capable of ultimately protecting the nation. This is why everything we do contains an element of growth to ACT! for America. As we become a larger factor in Washington DC and the nation's Statehouses, our capacity to pass meaningful legislation grows as well. I'd like to share with you the single largest element responsible for our rapid growth: Booking Brigitte Gabriel into large church and tea party events. Wherever we go, her vital message spreads like wildfire. We see new chapters spring up and new volunteers who are energized! This activity literally spurs our growth-a growth that is vital in order to be in a position to actually arrest the growth of radical Islam and Sharia law in the U.S. These events have quite practically become the lifeblood for ACT! for America. Many of our major projects are primarily funded through this effort-projects like mobilizing local chapters for our nationwide textbook reform project. I'm writing you today because you may know the leadership of a large church containing at least 600 seats or more (or a large group such as a tea party capable of bringing out at least 1500 people to a special event). We are necessarily restricted to larger venues only in order to maximize Brigitte's time and to insure our growth continues at the same pace we are currently experiencing. If you know the leadership of a large active group, please make this opportunity known to them. We don't charge a dime (to bring in one of the top 50 speakers in the nation!) if we can recruit members for ACT! for America and hold a book signing with Brigitte Gabriel at the conclusion of the presentation. If you know a group leadership team that is interested, please email Rosemary at: rstaples@actforamerica.org Make sure you put "Large Event" in the subject line of the email and give us all the contact information you have for the decision makers. We will make sure they receive all the information they need, answer any questions and book the event! When this happens in your area, you will see an explosion of membership and chapter growth much like every other area where we have shared these truths. As we grow, we will be able to step up to new challenges that only the largest grassroots organization in the national security movement can adequately accomplish. Thank you!

About That Special Relationship
Romney has landed in Jerusalem and Obama is threatening to visit Israel in his second term. This seems like good news for Americans, but presidential and pre-presidential visits are often bad news for Israelis. Romney's trip itinerary covering the UK, Israel and Poland is a clever road map critique of Obama's foreign policy. Kerry and Obama both campaigned on a promise to fix America's broken relations with its allies. Romney is subtly doing the same thing, paying a visit to allies alienated by the last three years. When Obama first visited Israel the contentious Democratic primaries had just wrapped up and Jewish voters and organizations had thrown their support to Hillary Clinton. Obama had Jewish leftists, but he didn't have more middle-of-the-road Jewish Democrats. And additionally paying a visit to the home of the Little Satan was a way of dispelling suspicions about his Muslim roots. Obama hasn't bothered with a visit to Israel, but he hasn't bothered appearing in person at the NAACP either. And that's all for the best. Israel needs a visit from Obama about as much as it needs more of the "mysterious fires" being set as part of the Arson Jihad. A presidential visit to most other countries is a formality while a presidential visit to Israel is an unpleasantness. Presidents who visit Israel must also stop off for a visit with the terrorist leaders. Presidents don't just stop by, have a pita, smell the flowers and do some handshakes. Instead they arrive tasked with peacemaking duties and then they task everyone else with their peacemaking. There is something intriguing, though little good, about Putin's visit to Israel, because it at least has the air of unpredictability. Presidential visits to Israel however are painfully predictable. There is never anything new that comes out of those trips and nothing good either. They are a lot like family reunions, pleasant in theory, but uncomfortable in practice. Both have a special relationship that they can never quite define and the visits always carry with them an aura of disappointment. A Presidential visit has the air of a boss coming downstairs to check up on a lazy employee. On arrival, there are the customary expressions of a hope for peace. In private whatever Prime Minister is in office will be upbraided for still not having achieved peace. At a joint press conference in a capital that the United States still doesn't recognize, after the usual formalities about the special relationship and the commitment to Israel's security, the President will tell reporters that more sacrifices are needed for peace. "And next time I talk to you there had better be peace," is the unspoken message always left hanging in the air. The pre-presidential visits are less of a chore, but no more significant. Candidates stop by Israel the way that they do any other state. They visit a few significant places, have their picture taken there, get a brief tour from local officials and fly over the narrowest point in Israel's border as a demonstration of just how strategically precarious the situation is. Like all practiced politicians they are very understanding of the problems that their hosts have, whatever those problems might be. They emphasize that unlike the last guy from the other party, they will not pressure Israel to make more concessions. And then a few years later they are disembarking from an airplane and frowning at the lack of peace on the airport tarmac. "Where is that damn peace already? I ordered it last week." Israel would be best served if the next American President forgot that Israel even existed or decided that it was a small country like Slovenia or Fiji, and need not be bothered with. A great month would be a month that passed without any State Department statements on Israel or a single question or answer from the White House Press Secretary about that small country wedged in between much bigger countries where frankly more interesting things are going on right now.

Federal Court finds Obama appointees interfered with New Black Panther prosecution
Washington Examiner | Conn Carroll | July 30, 2012

Conn Carroll
Senior Editorial Writer
|
A federal court in Washington, DC, held last week that political appointees appointed by President Obama did interfere with the Department of Justice's prosecution of the New Black Panther Party.
The ruling came as part of a motion by the conservative legal watch dog group Judicial Watch, who had sued the DOJ in federal court to enforce a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for documents pertaining to the the New Black Panthers case. Judicial Watch had secured many previously unavailable documents through their suit against DOJ and were now suing for attorneys' fees.
Obama's DOJ had claimed Judicial Watch was not entitled to attorney's fees since "none of the records produced in this litigation evidenced any political interference whatsoever in" how the DOJ handled the New Black Panther Party case. But United States District Court Judge Reggie Walton disagreed. Citing a "series of emails" between Obama political appointees and career Justice lawyers, Walton writes:

White House: We Don't Have That Churchill Bust, After All
The Blaze | by Mytheos Holt | Posted on July 31, 2012 at 10:30pm
When Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney criticized President Obama for sending a bust of Winston Churchill back to England - a charge that was repeated by syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer - the White House initially responded with immediate, cutting defensiveness. Specifically, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer fired back on the charge, calling it a "rumor" that was "patently false," and citing Krauthammer as someone who had "repeated this ridiculous claim." In fact, Pfeiffer went so far as to post a picture of President Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron looking at a bust of Churchill, presumably the bust in question.
 |
Kindly ignore the fact that President Obama is close to mooning the camera
|
Unfortunately for Pfeiffer, that bust was actually not the bust in question.

Study shows 'spurious doubling' of climate data
Watts Up With That
Today, a new paper has been released that is the culmination of knowledge gleaned from five years of work by Anthony Watts and the many volunteers and contributors to the SurfaceStations project started in 2007. The Watts paper, which studies several aspects of U.S. Historical Climatology Network siting issues and data adjustments, concludes that station siting issues and other factors have led to a spurious doubling of U.S. mean temperature trends in the 30-year data period covered by the study from 1979 to 2008. Obamacare promises doctors will be hard to find
Los Angeles Times
If you thought it was hard getting a doctor's appointment now, just wait until 30 million more Americans join the line. By 2020, the U.S. faces an estimated shortage of 40,000 primary-care doctors. As a result, more consumers may soon find themselves getting their checkups at the local pharmacy or Wal-Mart as Obamacare is implemented. Read & Comment

Gay power play over Chick-fil-A
Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy knows firsthand that defending traditional marriage is a dangerous business proposition. After saying he was "guilty as charged" for being a man of faith, calls for boycotts began. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel criticized Cathy while embracing Louis Farrakhan. Boston Mayor Tom Menino called for a ban on the restaurant chain. Even the Muppets got involved. The message was clear: Modern-day liberalism is at war with American values. Read & Comment

Romney, in Warsaw, Delivers Economic Message: Praises Free Market, Slams Big Government and Debt
|
|
by Joel B. Pollak
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney promised that he would not use his foreign trip to attack President Barack Obama, or to deliver major new foreign policy announcements. He kept his word--yet used his speech in Warsaw today to deliver a hard-hitting attack on big government. Praising Poland for choosing the path of economic liberty over big government, protectionism, and heavy spending, Romney's message reinforced the central economic messages of his campaign against President Obama back home.
Romney began by praising Poland as a NATO ally, placing his visit to Warsaw in the context of his trip to Britain and Israel, two other staunch American allies. He celebrated the Polish struggle against communism, likening it to the civil rights struggle in the United States, and drew special attention to Pope John Paul the Second, the Pole who became not only a religious leader but a symbol of the struggle of conscience against tyranny.

The Constitution Win in the 2012 Elections: Some Steps We Must Take
America's political parties will soon conduct their national conventions for the elections of 2012 - a time of unprecedented decision-making for the parties and the nation. The central issue - not often acknowledged as such - is whether the Constitution and the country and culture it undergirds will continue to survive and thrive. Or will we rather plunge further into the flames of the Culture War (a climactic battle between the Judeo-Christian and Humanistic worldviews) engulfing us? In this War the concept of "We, the People," as well as all other foundational values of our Constitution and culture, are under vicious attack.

Tuesday, July 31, 2012 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 98 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS Click here to listen now. Romney Talks Culture In Israel Mitt Romney is predictably being blasted by many commentators in the mainstream media for his assertion over the weekend that the stark difference in the performances of the economies of Israel and the Palestinian territories is rooted in culture and by extension in the values of the two societies. "If you could learn anything from the economic history of the world, it's this: Culture makes all the difference," Romney said in Jerusalem. "Culture makes all the difference. And as I come here and look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things." Never has the American left's bankrupt worldview been so clearly demonstrated than in its reaction to Romney's comments. A front-page Washington Post story today takes Romney to task for daring to mention the C word. The title of the Post article is, "In Israel, Romney wows crowds but puzzles with grasp of Palestinian relationship." The story goes on to state that Romney's "assessment is one not widely shared within Israel, and suggested a lack of sustained study or nuanced understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian relationship." Really? The cultural differences between Israel and the Palestinians are enormous, and it's not hard to see how they affect their economies and much else. Israel springs from the same cultural and moral norms as we do. The Palestinian territories have a culture of death. Israel was founded as a democracy and is rooted in the Judeo-Christian worldview. It believes, as we do, that every individual has inherent dignity and worth. The Palestinians are dominated by radical Islamists who treat their women like property, while teaching their children that there is no greater glory than to die as martyrs for Allah. In Israel and the west, there is a commitment to tolerance and religious liberty. In the Palestinian territories, there are no synagogues, and Christians live in constant fear of violence. In Israel, you can turn on the television to the equivalent of Sesame Street and find characters asking Israeli children: If you have four pieces of candy and give one to the little boy down the street, how many will you have? In the Palestinian territories, there are kids' shows with characters who ask: If four Jews are raping your sister and you kill one of them, how many Jews are still raping your sister? The economic differences are huge. To take just one indicator, in Israel per capita GDP is $31,000; in the West Bank and Gaza it's only $1,500. The suggestion that the Palestinians are struggling economically because of Israel is absurd. But to many on the left, it's the only acceptable explanation, because they refuse to accept that one culture or set of values could be better than another. It's important to note that the same commentators who refuse to even entertain the idea that Israel performs better because of its culture and values are the same people who are unwilling to say that the United States remains a shining city on a hill because of our values and our Judeo-Christian worldview. The reaction to Romney's remarks is a breath-taking display of the stupidity that defines that left's cultural and moral relativism. Don't Forget Chick-fil-A Tomorrow, August 1st, is Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day. And I am proud to join with Governor Mike Huckabee and others in encouraging people to show their support for the restaurant chain's Bible-based value system by eating out at one of their locations. But remember: This can't be a one-day effort. The left is planning a grinding campaign to drive Chick-fil-A out of business. You already know about the numerous liberal politicians who are threatening to prevent the restaurant from doing business in their cities. Several colleges have also moved to keep Chick-fil-A from selling its tasty chicken on campus. If there's a Chick-fil-A close by, be sure to put it at the top of your list for good, affordable food.

Think the Catholic Church has backed off Her fight for religious freedoms? Think again!
Jul 31, 2012 06:13 am | Coach Collins
By Kevin "Coach" Collins
Last week the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI named Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone as the new bishop of San Francisco the capital of Gay America. It is no coincidence that Bishop Cordileone chairs the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Subcommittee on the Defense and Promotion of Marriage. The bishop comes to his new position as an outspoken and persistent critic of Barack Obama's efforts to nullify Defense of Marriage Act. He vigorously opposes any movement toward recognition of Gay marriage.
Bishop Cordileone was a strong advocate of California's Proposition 8 which, when it was passed in 2008, prohibited Gay marriage and was subsequently overturned by a federal court.
Since 2008 he has been hated by the liberal press and Gay activists alike. A 2009 article talking about the Bishop said, "As an auxiliary bishop in San Diego, Cordileone played an indispensable role in conceiving, funding, organizing, and ultimately winning the campaign ... One thing that is clear about the despicable rapes of little boys at Penn State University is they were green lighted by the school's president Graham Spanier.
He knew what was going on, weighed the value of Penn State's football program against the lives of the little boys Football coach Jerry Sandusky was raping and consciously decided to ignore the ugly crimes happening on his campus. To Spanier the football program was more important than anything else. Why not? Spanier is a low character fake. He also approved Penn State's part in the Left's fraudulent climate change "research."
No thanks to Spanier Sandusky's crimes finally came to light and Spanier was forced out of his position. Tales from the Public Sector
Posted: 31 Jul 2012 02:39 PM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
Once upon a time conservatives agitated to privatize the U.S. Postal Service. But hardly anyone on the right cares about the Post Office any more for the simple reason that technology has enabled us to go right around it: we use faxes and emails to transmit documents, pay our bills online, and send packages by UPS or FedEx. (By the way, when the fax machine was first being brought to the market about 30 years ago, the Post Office petitioned the FCC to require that fax machines could only be placed and used in post offices, on the perfectly consistent bureaucratic rationale that since fax machines could transmit letters, the post office's legal monopoly on first class mail swept the devices under their authority. Fortunately the FCC was not persuaded.)
What happened to the Post Office is starting to happen to public education; in a few more years conservatives may stop agitating for school choice and gnashing their teeth about teachers unions, for the simple reason that fewer and fewer people will be sending their kids to public schools. I saw Rupert Murdoch hold up an iPad at a meeting last year, and declare, "This is what is going to defeat the teachers union.")
Anyway, today I see that the Post Office is poised to default on a $5.5 billion payment due this week to the U.S. Treasury for-wait for it-retiree health benefits. Gee that sounds increasingly familiar. And guess who is nowadays in favor of privatizing the Post Office: liberals, such as former Obama OMB director Peter Orszag. Congrats, Peter-you've caught up to where conservatives were 40 years ago. Maybe you'll discover the merits of low taxes about the time you start to collect Social Security. If there still is Social Security by then. . .
Meanwhile, Solyndra-remember them? the company Joe Biden promised was producing "good, permanent jobs"?-has released its Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan. Of the $527 million Solyndra received from taxpayers, they'll repay . . . $24 million. I'm sure the Obama Administration will take small bills. Easier to use as walking around money on election day in November.

Democrats for Entitlement Reform? Is Hell Freezing Over?
Posted: 31 Jul 2012 11:21 AM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
One of my long time analytical axioms is that only Republicans can fix our health care system, and only Democrats can fix runaway entitlements. This is a variation of the point I have argued before on Power Line-last year here, and again here-that large changes in social policy can only proceed with the consent-not necessarily the agreement, but the consent-of the minority party. That's why virtually all milestone social legislation for most of the last century passed on a bipartisan basis (actually the 1964 Civil Rights Act attracted a higher proportion of Republican votes than Democrats votes in both houses). Thus, Obama's biggest mistake with Obamacare was ramming it through on a purely partisan basis (ditto the stimulus), while dismissing alternatives that might have attracted some Republican votes, like malpractice liability reform and cross-state insurance competition. (Actually I don't think Obama was the least bit troubled by this, but that's a topic for another day.)
Much as I am a fanboy of Paul Ryan and his fiscal reform plans, Republicans probably can't enact significant entitlement reform on a partisan basis, even if they win a landslide election in November. Some Democrats need to come to the plate. The track record so far is not encouraging; the manner in which Obama and Democrats brushed aside the Simpson-Bowles commission report two years ago was shameful. Ryan tells me that he's had a number of Democrats tell him privately that they're ready to deal-after the election. Real profiles in courage.
This is all prologue to noting the report out this week from Third Way, a centrist-Democrat Clinton/Blair style think tank, entitled "Collision Course: Why Democrats Must Back Entitlement Reform." (Josh Freed on Third Way's staff is a pal of mine, so I follow their work more closely than some other outfits.) The Third Way report is concerned with the fact that soaring entitlement spending is crowding out genuine public investment in science, technology, and infrastructure that helps the economy grow. This axis of the argument might be disputed, but at least give Third Way its due for not falling into calling food stamps, unemployment insurance, and Head Start "investments" the way most liberals like to do:
Today, there is a $1 trillion gulf between what we are spending on major entitlement programs and the money we devote to public investments. In ten years, the gap will be $2.6 trillion.
In effect, while investments were once one of the largest parts of our budget, today they are one of the smallest. In fact, public investments represented a full one-third of the budget in the 1960s. Today they have dwindled to less than 15% as a result of more and more federal dollars going to entitlements. And as the budget caps set forth in the Budget Control Act take effect, investment spending will fall below the rate of inflation, plummeting to 5% of our budget by 2040. This fiscal path translates to a less-skilled workforce, lower rates of job creation, and an infrastructure unfit for a 21st century economy-hardly the Great Society LBJ envisioned.
The Third Way report doesn't say exactly how entitlement spending should be fixed. But it does offer this debunking of favorite liberal answers:
So how do we ensure that a robust investment budget continues to fuel middle class growth? Revenue can and should be part of a solution. But because entitlements are growing faster than earnings, it's simply not enough. Even if in 2014, we increased revenue to 21% of GDP-the highest it's been since the creation of the modern tax code-by 2040, we would still face an annual deficit of more than $4 trillion in 2012 dollars.
Cutting defense spending is also not the silver bullet that many progressives like to believe it is. Even before sequestration, its share of the budget has been close to flat for 20 years. With sequestration, discretionary defense spending will continue to decline, dipping to less than 14% of outlays by 2022.
Will this report make any difference? Hard to tell. Third Way is hardly a bipartisan organization-its honorary co-chairs and board are mostly moderate liberal Democrats, the kind who once were the pillars of the Democratic Leadership Council, which Third Way seems to have replaced in many ways. Of course, the Democratic left declared war on the DLC during and after the Clinton years, which is one reason why it is a shell of its old self. The DLC still exists, but hardly seems the force it once was. Will any office-holding Democrats embrace the Third Way report? I'll be watching.

A Catcher's Story
Posted: 31 Jul 2012 09:31 AM PDT
(Paul Mirengoff)
Jim Hibbs was an All-American catcher for Stanford University, a member of the 1964 Olympic baseball team, a minor leaguer for eight years, and, briefly, a major leaguer with the (then) California Angels. He is also a Power Line reader.
Jim has written the story of his baseball playing career in a book called A Catcher's Story. I like the book a lot, and believe that those who followed baseball in the 1960s and early 70s, and those who just like a fun baseball read, will also enjoy it.
Jim was raised in Ventura, California, the middle of a hotbed of young baseball talent in the late 1950s and early 60s. Playing in youth baseball and high school, he faced future major league pitchers like Bill Singer, Jim Colburn, and Jim Lonborg, each of whom had 20-win seasons in the big leagues.
I had my first real conversation with a major league baseball player when Jim and I spoke earlier this month. By contrast, Jim encountered his first future big-leaguer, Steve Hovley, when he was in the second grade and the two battled for athletic supremacy on the school playground.
Hovley eventually became a teammate of Jim Bouton's in Seattle and features in Bouton's classic book Ball Four. But A Cather's Story is, in a way, the anti-Ball Four. Bouton takes a cynical view of his sport and makes plenty of fun of teammates. Hibbs' book is nearly cynicism-free and with very few exceptions (including a notable one discussed below) has nothing unkind to say about anyone.
For example, Hibbs played for Rocky Bridges, one of baseball's real characters. Jim could probably have filled pages talking about Bridges' quirks. Instead, he focuses on Rocky's "spotless baseball soul." (Coincidentally, one of Bouton's books takes its name from Bridges' statement "I managed good but boy did they play bad").
Both Ball Four and A Catcher's Story are honest books, I believe. Bouton chose to focus on human folly; Hibbs opts for human goodness. There's more than enough of both to write a good baseball book about either.
Jim is particularly grateful to his many managers and coaches. Among them are legendary college coach Rod Dedeaux (his manager at the Olympics), Tommy Lasorda, Sparky Anderson (his manager in training camp), Bill Rigney, Chuck Tanner, Norm Sherry, and Whitey Lockman.
Only Leo Durocher, who managed Jim in training camp, comes off badly. But Jim's criticism echoes that of players going back as far as Hall of Famer Arky Vaughn, who once refused to play for Leo the Lip until he apologized for publicly blaming a pitcher for throwing a particular pitch that Durocher had told him to.
Some of Jim's favorite teammates are Andy Messersmith, Juan Pizarro, Charlie Hough, Pete LaCock, and Dave Concepcion. He also got a huge kick out of the great Ernie Banks during Cubs training camp. Some players tired of Banks' "let's play two" mantra, but not Jim. "Hibbsy, you want to play two today, don't you?" Banks would ask. "Sure, Ern, as long as you're leading the charge," Jim would answer.
In the spring of 1970, a few months before Pete Rose bowled over Ray Fosse in the All-Star game, Rose attacked Jim's knee in a home plate collision during an exhibition game between Cincinnati and its top farm team, Indianapolis. Rose mentions the play in his book Charlie Hustle.
As Jim tells it, his left leg was in position to block the plate, while his right leg was extended to help him deal with the throw, which was to his right. According to Jim, Rose's proper play was a head first slide, with his left hand touching the outside of the plate, which Jim couldn't really block with his leg. Had Rose made that play, Jim's sweep tag would have missed him by a foot.
Instead, Rose launched his helmet and shoulders at Jim's exposed knee, the baseball equivalent of a crack-back block. Rose then jumped to his feet and shouted, "That'll teach you to block the f___ing plate."
In discussing Rose, Jim's language is over-the-top. But it's easy to understand his outrage. The play cost Jim another shot at the major leagues. For on the evening later that year when he was called up by the Cubs (having moved on from the Reds after spring training), his injured knee gave out on the final play of a game in Tucson. Instead of a return trip to The Show, Jim spent two weeks in the hospital recovering from surgery.
As with Durocher, Jim gets it right about Pete Rose. After all, why would Rose want to "teach" a player in his organization - a potential teammate - not to block the plate on a play where Rose could have scored with a slide. Whatever one thinks about Rose's play on Fosse, it was not a shot at the catcher's knee and it occurred in a high-profile game of at least some consequence.
Moreover, Rose's all-out, show-no-mercy style was appropriate only for him, in his view. When Gene Garber ended Rose's hitting streak at 44 games with a nasty 3-2 change-up, Rose moaned that Garber had pitched like it was Game 7 of the World Series, and should have challenged him with a fastball. Yet, this was an official major league game, not a meaningless exhibition contest. Why shouldn't Garber go all out?
Apparently, Rose figured that only he gets to play every game like the World Series depends on it.
A Catcher's Story is self-published and would have benefited from professional editing. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed Jim's story and recommend it to the baseball fans among our readers.

Mitt Romney In Poland
Posted: 31 Jul 2012 09:29 AM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
Earlier today, Mitt Romney spoke at Warsaw University. The New York Times aptly described Romney's speech as "lyrical," as he talked about freedom and about the shared history of Poland and the United States. Having essentially been endorsed by Lech Walesa, Romney recalled the glory days of Solidarity in the 1980s:
In a turbulent world, Poland stands as an example and defender of freedom. Only last month, in Gdansk, a sculpture was unveiled of President Reagan and John Paul the Second. As President Walesa told a reporter, "Reagan should have a monument in every city."
Czeslaw Nowak, recalled the days in 1981 when he, Walesa, and others were imprisoned by the communist regime. Just when it felt like they might be forgotten by the world, the captives learned that in the White House, the President of the United States was lighting candles. It was a demonstration of unity with them - a sign of solidarity. "When Reagan lit the candles," Mr. Nowak recalled, "we knew we had a friend in the United States."
But the substantive heart of Romney's speech was his praise for the free-market path that Poland has chosen after experiencing the nightmare of socialism:
Perhaps because here in Poland centralized control is no distant memory, you have brought a special determination to securing a free and prosperous economy. When the Soviet Empire breathed its last, Poland's economy was in a state of perpetual crisis. When economists analyzed it from abroad, one heard talk of the prospect of starvation in major cities. But from the depths of those dark times, this nation's steady rise is a shining example of the prosperity that economic opportunity can bring. Your nation has moved from a state monopoly over the economy, price controls, and severe trade restrictions to a culture of entrepreneurship, greater fiscal responsibility, and international trade. As a result, your economy has experienced positive growth in each of the last twenty years. In that time, you have doubled the size of your economy. The private sector has gone from a mere 15 percent of the economy to 65 percent. And while other nations fell into recession in recent years, you weathered the storm and continued to flourish. When economists speak of Poland today, it is not to lament chronic problems, but to describe how this nation empowered the individual, lifted the heavy hand of government, and became the fastest-growing economy in all of Europe. Yesterday, one of your leaders shared with me an economic truth that has been lost in much of the world: "It is simple. You don't borrow what you cannot pay back." The world should pay close attention to the transformation of Poland's economy. A march toward economic liberty and smaller government has meant a march toward higher living standards, a strong military that defends liberty at home and abroad, and an important and growing role on the international stage. Rather than heeding the false promise of a government-dominated economy, Poland sought to stimulate innovation, attract investment, expand trade, and live within its means. Your success today is a reminder that the principles of free enterprise can propel an economy and transform a society.
With the U.S. at a crossroads, Romney is right to remind not just Poles, but American voters that the alternative to free enterprise is poverty and oppression.
As I wrote yesterday, Romney's seven-day overseas trip has been successful, but its press coverage has been almost bizarrely hostile. I couldn't find anything in today's speech out of which reporters can gin up a controversy, but no doubt they will try.
On Fox News this morning, Romney responded to the skewed press coverage of his trip:

Milton Friedman at 100
Posted: 31 Jul 2012 08:10 AM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
Today is Milton Friedman's 100th birthday. It is one of the great privileges of my life to have known him some, and to have spent some time with him in San Francisco back in the 1990s. Driving with him up and down the hills of San Francisco was not for the faint of heart. All of his rational calculations of risk seemed to go out the window when he was behind the wheel of his Lexus. And one of my cherished possessions is the very kind note Milton sent to tell me how much he enjoyed the first volume of my Age of Reagan books, where he makes several appearances.
Thomas Sowell, a student of Milton's at Chicago, recalls him here. My pal Steve Moore also recalls his importance in the Wall Street Journal today, calling him "The Man Who Saved Capitalism."
In the 1960s, Friedman famously explained that "there's no such thing as a free lunch." If the government spends a dollar, that dollar has to come from producers and workers in the private economy. There is no magical "multiplier effect" by taking from productive Peter and giving to unproductive Paul. As obvious as that insight seems, it keeps being put to the test. Obamanomics may be the most expensive failed experiment in free-lunch economics in American history.
Equally illogical is the superstition that government can create prosperity by having Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke print more dollars. In the very short term, Friedman proved, excess money fools people with an illusion of prosperity. But the market quickly catches on, and there is no boost in output, just higher prices.
I might (but might not) quarrel slightly with Steve' second paragraph here, as it seems velocity-one of the key terms of Friedman's basic equation of monetarism (MV=PQ) fell sharply during the recession and may still be off, though it is hard for the layman to tell. We visited this subject once before, and it brings vividly to mind a dinner I once enjoyed with Milton and the president of a regional Fed bank in the early 1990s in San Francisco, and I was immediately in way over my head as they argued the virtues and defects of the M1, M2, and M3 measures of the money supply. Even among monetarist economists, there are serious and honest differences in evaluating the economy and prescribing the right monetary course. (Though one thing Milton was absolutely against was the gold standard. I learned that in my very first conversation with him way back in the 1980s.)
Easier to grasp is Milton's piercing of the pretentions of things like Obama's stimulus. My all time favorite Milton story involves the time he was motoring in Europe, and noticed a large group of men digging in a field with shovels. Milton asked someone why they didn't use a steam shovel or earth mover, and was told that digging with shovels was an employment measure, and if they used an earth mover it would put people out of work. To which Milton naturally followed up: "Then why don't you give them spoons?"
There are lots of good videos of Milton on YouTube, many of them drawn from his fabulous "Free to Choose" television series. But my favorite for today is this very short smackdown of Phil Donahue on the subject of "greed." Enjoy! (UPDATE: A faithful correspondent reminds me about the Milton Friedman Choir, singing about the corporation, so I've added this one, too.)

Government official trying to restrict pastor's speech
Send your email to Miami-Dade School superintendent Alberto Carvalho today!
July 31, 2012
According to OneNewsNow, a Miami-Dade County school superintendent is using a pastor's sermon about homosexuality as grounds to review his church's lease.
Following Pastor Jack Hakimian's message at Impact Miami Church on the biblical position concerning homosexuality, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho is "reviewing" North Miami Senior High School's lease agreement with the church to determine if it should be revoked.
Pastor Hakimian preaches and teaches inside North Miami Senior High School every Sunday. In a recent sermon, he listed homosexuality along with other sinful lifestyles such as drug abuse and witchcraft. The superintendent didn't like it, and began threatening to cancel the church's lease.
View this short interview between Tim Wildmon and Pastor Hakimian
All across America, thousands of churches meet in public school buildings on weekends, when school is not in session. The Courts have clearly stated that religious institutions have the same access to rent school space as does any public organization. In other words, if the school rents to one, it must rent to all.
Although Pastor Hakimian has secured Christian legal help from Libery Counsel, he seeks a written apology from the Miami-Dade School District. He says this will serve to help other churches that may be experiencing religious discrimination.
TAKE ACTION
Send an email to Miami-Dade School superintendent Alberto Carvalho. Urge him to 1) stop his efforts to evict Pastor Hakimian and 2) issue a public apology for attempting to practice religious viewpoint discrimination.
A copy of your email to Superintendent Carvalho will also be sent to each of the Miami-Dade School District board members.

Imagine a government program that discourages work, rewards idleness and promotes long-term government dependence.
Unfortunately you don't have to imagine. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps, is an $84 billion program that expands rapidly each year.
The food stamp program was created in the 1960s to provide a safety net for low income Americans needing assistance to put food on the table. But the program has expanded, loosening eligibility standards and actually encouraging people to sign up. Today, almost one in five American households receives food stamp benefits.
In a recent paper, The Heritage Foundation welfare expert, Robert Rector offered seven suggestions to improve the food stamp program.
What do you think is the most grievous shortcoming of the food stamp program?
Opponents of voter identification are quick to argue that requiring a valid ID discriminates against minorities and disenfranchises legal voters. However, new data from the Office of Kansas Secretary of State indicates that new photo ID requirements are making it "easy to vote and hard to cheat."
During Kansas' local elections that have taken place since this law went into effect, only 84 of 68,047 voters did not present a photo ID. Most of these people simply forgot. While opponents of voter identification laws believe otherwise, Kansas is proving that requiring a photo ID at elections is not too much to ask.
Do you think voters should be required to present a photo ID in November?
In an attempt to combat the economic burden of increased federal regulations, the House of Representatives passed legislation that aims to reduce the red tape. The major reform proposed by the House would ban the adoption of new regulations until our unemployment rate is less than 6 percent. While this freeze will not cure the economy, it sends a strong message to regulators that our economy does not need any more restrictions.
The freeze is one among many common sense changes that will help limit unnecessary burdens and promote economic growth. Combined with other reforms already approved by the House, these reforms represent a major step toward limiting the regulatory burden on the economy, job creators and American consumers.
Do you think regulations are holding the economy back?

The Gateway Drug to Dependency
America was supposed to be the land of self-government. Citizens were to govern themselves politically and morally. They would practice the virtues of self-reliance and responsibility to foster this independent character. Forged through hard work, self-reliance would prevent citizens from depending on the state. A notion of personal responsibility would encourage these independent citizens to understand the limits of government and to solve problems for themselves. But such an independent citizen is proving to be less common every year. Now, more people than ever before depend on the federal government for housing, food, income, student aid, or other assistance. Some 67 million Americans, from college students to retirees to welfare beneficiaries, enjoy federal support for things that were once considered to be the responsibility of individuals, families, neighborhoods, churches, and other civil society institutions. That's about 20 percent of us on the take. This is no accident. Federal welfare programs are growing by leaps and bounds. And the food stamps program is serving as a "gateway drug" to draw people into depending on Washington. As Heritage experts Robert Rector and Katherine Bradley report, in the average month in 2010, roughly one of every five households in the U.S. received food stamp benefits. And those on food stamps today tend to rely on government more tomorrow. At any given moment, the majority of recipients are or will become long-term dependents. In fact, half of food stamp aid to families with children has gone to families that have received aid for 8.5 years or more. Plus, most people who receive food stamps also participate in other government aid programs as well. So those costs multiply over time. It's tempting to say the welfare state is expanding because the economy is weak, but the fact is that the recession isn't the problem here. Before the current recession, combined federal and state spending on food stamps nearly doubled. Under the Bush administration, it rose from $19.8 billion in 2000 to $37.9 billion in 2007. Since taking office, the Obama administration has more than doubled spending on food stamps again: Spending rose from $39 billion in 2008 to a projected $85 billion in 2012. Even after adjusting for inflation and population growth, food stamp spending is now nearly twice the level of any previous recession. Instead of providing a "hand up," food stamps is a fossilized program that, except for greatly increased costs, has changed little since its inception in the early years of the War on Poverty. It remains, basically, a "handout." For example, the program was largely unaffected by the welfare reform legislation of 1996, which replaced Aid to Families with Dependent Children with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), even though TANF and food stamp caseloads overlap to a great degree. TANF worked, and helped millions of people move off welfare and become self-sufficient. The same principles, rewarding work and discouraging dependency, should be applied to food stamps today. The goal of the War on Poverty, President Lyndon Johnson said, would be "making taxpayers out of taxeaters." He declared, "We want to give the forgotten fifth of our people opportunity not doles." LBJ was not proposing a massive system of endlessly increasing welfare benefits doled out to an ever-enlarging population of beneficiaries. His proclaimed goal was not to create a massive new system of government handouts, but an increase in self-sufficiency: to create a new generation of Americans capable of supporting themselves without government handouts. LBJ planned to reduce, not increase, welfare dependence. It's still possible to make welfare temporary and to encourage individual initiative. But doing so would require major changes in anti-poverty programs, starting with food stamps. Following the welfare reform model, food stamps should be transformed from an open-ended entitlement program that gives one-way handouts into a work activation program. Non-elderly, able-bodied adults who receive benefits should be required to work, prepare for work, or at least look for work as a condition of receiving aid. Policymakers should also crack down on fraud, and eliminate application loopholes that permit food stamp recipients to bypass income and asset tests. Finally, Congress should cap spending on food stamps at pre-recession levels, to force the program to focus on the truly needy. That would help people move from dependence to independence. The history of the United States is rooted in the fight for independence. The best way to ensure our country endures is to rekindle that spirit. Slashing dependence on government is a crucial step.

Farm Bill: Big Spending, Bad Policy
|
Last week, we told you about the House farm and food stamp bill - the trillion-dollar boondoggle that guarantees farmers will receive 85% of their average revenue and spends nearly $80 billion a year on food stamps. Now it's time to let your voice be heard and tell your Representative that you do not want your tax dollars to be spent in this way.
With a lengthy Congressional recess days away, some are clamoring for this policy to become law. Your email will remind them Americans have had enough.
>> Email your Representative and tell them to oppose the farm bill.
The House farm and food stamp bill costs $957 billion over ten years, which represents a 60% spending increase from the 2008 farm and food stamp bill as passed. It also locks in stimulus-era food stamp spending, which has doubled since President Obama took office four years ago.
The farm and food stamp bill is a step in the wrong direction, promoting both corporate and individual dependence on government. Government dependence is unaffordable and culturally corrosive, and it is time Washington lawmakers understood that. The House should scrap this bill.
>> Tell your Representative to fight for free market principles.
Thank you in advance for your emails to your Representatives. They will help us show Congress that Americans are paying attention and have had enough of big spending bills.
Let's continue the fight,

Friedman's Legacy of Fighting for School Choice for All
On the late Milton Friedman's 100th birthday today, his words are truer than ever: "There is no respect in which inhabitants of a low-income neighborhood are so disadvantaged as in the kind of schooling they can get for their children." And the news from many parts of the country is disheartening. Despite a new school choice option for students in Louisiana, a teachers union there has threatened to sue private schools that accept voucher students this fall. Unions have fought school choice initiatives because they see options for students eroding their power structure. The Administration is also fighting students' best interest. Instead of promoting what works-school choice, empowering parents and students-President Obama just issued an executive order last week creating a new federal bureaucracy to single out African-American students for more government meddling in their education. The order states that:
substantial obstacles to equal educational opportunity still remain in America's educational system. African Americans lack equal access to highly effective teachers and principals, safe schools, and challenging college-preparatory classes, and they disproportionately experience school discipline and referrals to special education.
The new White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans is supposed to "help expand educational opportunities, improve educational outcomes, and deliver a complete and competitive education for all African Americans." This is to be done "in part by supporting efforts to improve the recruitment, preparation, development, and retention of successful African American teachers and school leaders and other effective teachers and school leaders responsible for the education of African American students." America's students don't need teachers hand-picked for them by the teachers unions or by the federal government. They need the power to pick their own teachers. Parents need the freedom to send their children to the school of their choice-to find the academic and social environment that works best for them. The old way isn't working. The District of Columbia is spending nearly $30,000 per student "in a district that has one of the lowest graduation rates in the nation and produces some of the country's lowest achievement scores," laments Heritage's Rachel Sheffield. This spending hasn't changed the fact that "the graduation rate for D.C. students hovers around 60 percent, well below the nationwide average of 74 percent. Math and reading scores are also among the lowest in the country." D.C. is even paying students "with poor academic and behavioral records" to attend summer school, according to The Washington Examiner. That isn't the end of the story, however. Heritage's Lindsey Burke reminds us that Friedman's work on behalf of educational freedom goes on:
Today, we have a growing number of innovative school choice options-charters, vouchers, tax credits, online learning, and education savings accounts, to name a few. These options were conceived in the mind of Friedman and are being brought to life by reform-oriented governors and legislators across the country.
Funding for the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, which allows children from low-income homes to escape the underperforming D.C. public schools and attend a private school of their choice, was saved for a year after President Obama threatened to end it altogether. States are implementing school choice reforms because the results are astoundingly positive. According to federally mandated evaluations of the D.C. program, student achievement has increased, and graduation rates of voucher students have increased significantly. Graduation rates in D.C. public schools languish (hovering around 55 percent), and the public school system ranks last in the country in terms of academic achievement. Yet, students who used a voucher to attend private school had a 91 percent graduation rate. Seeking success for their own students, Arizona enacted groundbreaking education savings accounts, and Indiana created the largest voucher program in the country. As Friedman said, we will see improvements in education only "by privatizing a major segment of the educational system-i.e., by enabling a private, for-profit industry to develop that will provide a wide variety of learning opportunities and offer effective competition to public schools." Our students deserve the best, and they will choose it when given the opportunity.

Congressional report blames five ATF employees for Fast and Furious debacle
Published July 31, 2012
FoxNews.com
WASHINGTON - Congressional Republican investigators have singled out five employees in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to blame for the botched anti-gunrunning operation known as Fast and Furious, in a report on the scandal obtained by Fox News.
The report, the first of three to be issued from the congressional investigation, concludes that the five employees were responsible for an operation "marred by missteps, poor judgments and inherently reckless strategy." All five have since been reassigned but remain employed in the agency.
The findings put additional pressure on the Obama administration in an ongoing battle over what higher-level officials knew, if anything, about the ATF operation.
