The Wages of Willful Blindness: Is It Time for Defenders of Liberty to Abandon the GOP?
July 23, 2012 by Andrew C. McCarthy
The embrace of the Muslim Brotherhood by President Obama, aided and abetted by the Republican establishment, is not new. It is the culmination of a gradual surrender whose silhouette was already evident nearly twenty years ago. I wrote about it in Willful Blindness, a memoir about the start of our nation's confrontation with Islamic supremacism as a domestic threat - back in the early Nineties, when I led the prosecution of the Blind Sheikh's New York jihadist cell, which carried out the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Is our wayward course one that can be corrected? The ongoing controversy over Islamist influence on our government will probably answer that question.
Spotlighted are concerns raised by five conservative members of the House of Representatives about (i) Brotherhood-friendly government policymaking and (ii) government officials, such as the State Department's Huma Abedin, who have longstanding Islamist ties. The crossroads at which we've arrived, however, involve a lot more than any single government official or policy. Let me be stark: Our liberty and security are threatened, and the questions not only of whether GOP leaders comprehend the stakes, but also of whether the Republican Party remains a worthy home for defenders of liberty, have become very real.

RJC Lauds Romney's Jerusalem Speech, Sees 'Clear Choice' for Jewish Voters
July 29, 2012... The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) praised Gov. Mitt Romney for remarks today in Jerusalem affirming the vital importance of our nation's alliance with Israel.
RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks said, "While Gov. Romney has been scrupulous in avoiding any criticism of President Obama while on foreign soil, this galvanizing speech crystallizes the clear choice facing American voters. Plainly, President Romney's approach to our critical alliance with Israel would be a vast improvement over President Obama's.
"Four years ago, then-Likud party leader Netanyahu emphasized to candidate Obama that for Israelis, there was no concern more urgent than the rising nuclear threat posed by Iran. That Prime Minister Netanyahu felt it necessary to make similar remarks today demonstrates how President Obama has missed critical opportunities to address that threat.
"When the Prime Minister told Gov. Romney, 'We have to be honest and say that all the diplomacy and sanctions so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota,' the message is clear: we need a new approach - one that is commensurate with the seriousness of the threat.
"In his speech today, Gov. Romney reiterated a point he's emphasized consistently since he visited Israel in 2007 on a trip RJC was proud to sponsor: 'the conduct of Iran's leaders gives us no reason to trust them with nuclear material.' Prime Minister Netanyahu called special attention to that point to emphasize that saying that Iran can't be allowed 'to have a nuclear weapon' is an inadequate formulation given the nature of the regime and the stakes for Israel.
"Gov. Romney speaks for the vast majority of Jewish Americans - and of all Americans - when he explains why we hold dear a friendship based on shared interests and shared values. We appreciate that he made the effort to travel to Israel to make that statement - and that he's promised to make the Jewish state the destination for his first foreign voyage as President."

Romney's Remarkable Speech in Jerusalem
by Daniel Pipes July 29, 2012 Cross-posted from National Review Online: The Corner
http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2012/07/romney-remarkable-speech-in-jerusalem
Mitt Romney speaking before a backdrop of Jerusalem. |
Mitt Romney, the all-but-official Republican presidential candidate, delivered a stem-winder of a speech to the Jerusalem Foundation today, packing emotional support with frank policy statements. The contrast with Obama could hardly be more dramatic. Indeed, one could go through the speech and note the many refutations of Obama. For example, the opening comment that "To step foot into Israel is to step foot into a nation that began with an ancient promise made in this land" directly contrasts with Obama's crabbed statement in Cairo about "the aspiration for a Jewish homeland [being] rooted in a tragic history." Also, in contrast to the nonsensical Obama administration stance on Jerusalem - sneaking in changes to captions that identified it as such and going through verbal gymnastics to avoid calling it that - Romney came out and plainly called Jerusalem "the capital of Israel."

Announcing the Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day on August 1
July 26, 2012
Christian-owned Chick-fil-A has come under assault once again, this time because CEO Dan Cathy recently affirmed his personal view that the Biblical view of marriage should be upheld.
The "Big Gay" machine has ramped up an un-relenting and vicious public attack against Chick-fil-A. Homosexual activists are spewing hate-filled bigotry and intolerance toward the company in unprecedented fashion.
Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day is our way of showing our support for a company whose leaders believe in marriage as that of one man, one woman.
Join millions of others in showing support for Chick-fil-A by visiting your local Chick-fil-A on Wednesday, August 1, 2012. The plan is simple. At least once on August 1, eat a meal at Chick-fil-A and politely let the staff and management know you appreciate the company's Christian value system.
Let us know you're supporting Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day by signing up today! We'll let Chick-fil-A know to expect record sales on August 1!

Activate: How to turn the 2012 election from a close call to a mandate
Last night, Glenn focused on the importance of commitment. He was the first to admit, a lot of last night's show was something you had heard before - but it's important to start at the beginning and to make sure you know what you believe before you get put into action. And tonight, Glenn revealed ways for you to really get moving!
Tonight, the focus of the show was "Activate" - and it was all about the election and how you can make sure that one way or another - 2012 is a year for a mandate for or against the progressives. And if you think it doesn't matter just take a look at what is happening right now in Wisconsin. Progressives and unions are doing everything they can to make sure that Walker loses. It's a microcosm to what is happening around the country, and Glenn thought it was so important that he recapped it on tonight's show (in under three minutes!):

Video: The "You Didn't Build That" ad war heats up
Posted: 26 Jul 2012 11:57 AM PDT
Following President Obama's recent comments regarding how he believes successful businesses are created and maintained, the Romney campaign seized on the President's statement when he said "if you've got a business, you didn't build that," and has turned it into an ad campaign. The President, as expected, was compelled to respond.

Monday, July 23, 11:30 PM
Dear Members and Friends,
Just in: Contempt of Congress AG Eric Holder has ordered the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate
Pennsylvania's newly enactedVoter ID law--adding an additional hurdle for the law to overcome if it's to be implemented on election day, Tuesday, November 6.
http://www.philly.com/philly/news/homepage/163500696.html
The timing of the investigation is quite suspect since a Commonwealth Court hearing challenging the law is set to begin in Harrisburg this Wednesday, July 25.
The hearing, expected to last 5-7 days, is open to the public. (We encourage you to attend if possible--details below.)
And what usual suspects do we find standing behind the lawsuit? Why the
American Civil Liberties Union and their allies, of course.
The Voter ID law, which enhances voter integrity by making voter fraud more difficult to conduct, was signed by Gov. Tom Corbett earlier this year. Its passage has obviously frightened the Obama administration and its cohorts.
In other matters: Association member Barb Campbell has forwarded a general request by Gov. Mike Huckabee to make Wednesday, August 1, 'Chick Fil-A Appreciation Day.'
In line with our Black Friday BuyCott (2011) and Whole Foods BuyCott (2009), we'll call this our 'Chick Fil-A BuyCott, 2012.'
In Gov. Huckabee's own words:
"....The goal is simple: Let's affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick Fil-A on Wednesday, August 1....
"This effort is not being launched by the Chick Fil-A company....
Simply affirm [your] appreciation for a company run by Christian principles by showing up on Wednesday, August 1 or by participating online--tweeting your support or sending a message on Facebook."
Commonwealth Court Hearing on Voter ID
When: Wednesday, July 25, 10 AM.
(Hearing to last several more days--beginning at 9 AM.)
Where: Courtroom 3002, Pennsylvania Judicial Center, 601
Commonwealth Ave., Harrisburg, PA.
Who: Hearing before Judge Robert Simpson and open to the public.
We'll try to arrange car pools for those who are interested in
attending. Please let us know if you are driving and would like
company or are in need of a ride by calling 215.663.1983.
Many thanks!
Chick Fil-A BuyCott
When: Wednesday, August 1, during restaurant hours.
Where: Your neighborhood Chick Fil-A.
Hope to see you!
On behalf of the Association Board,
Teri Adams

From Peter Friedman:
Now that I have walked precincts and spoken with voters, and presented my new lecture "Community Organizing to Win Elections!" numerous times, I can give you this empirical info on how we can win in 2012! If you attend neighborhood meetings, town halls, or just speak with your neighbors and friends, use the following tactic:
"Are you better off than you were four years ago? I'm not! I'm paying twice as much for gas and food. I have had to cut back on things I used to do and buy four years ago. I used to go out to eat three to four times each week, but now I can only go a few times a week because I'm paying so much more for everything!"
Use this analogy regarding the 2012 election when you speak to voters: "Do you have a 401K or stock portfolio? You know, America is just like a business. If you bought stock in a company four years ago such as Apple, and they hired a new CEO right after, and during the past four years that new CEO ruined the company so that your stock went down in value, what do think should happen to that incompetent CEO? If you could, would you attend the annual stockholder's meeting and vote that incompetent CEO out? Would you vote to hire a more competent CEO? Of course you would! America has an "annual stockholder's meeting" every four years! It is our Presidential Election! We are all stockholders in America, and it is our responsibility to have competent management running America ds that our "stock" in America increases in value! " I have used this analogy in walking precincts and have changed the hearts and minds of voters by appealing to logic, reason, and their pocketbook! People vote with their wallets! PRINT THIS OUT AND CARRY IT AROUND WITH YOU TO USE IN CONVERSATIONS!!!
All talking points when addressing voters or interviewers should only deal with "money" issues! The concept is, "Are you better off today than you were four years ago?" Question: Why has the current administration removed food and gas from the Inflation Index? Answer: To fool US! Removing food and gas from the Inflation Index shows that very little inflation is present benefitting the admninistration's propaganda. How much more are WE paying for such things as a gallon of gas - more than double what it was when Obama was elected - and basic food such as milk, cheese, meat, and fish? Do you think Obama refusing to allow oil drilling off the West and East coasts, the Gulf of Mexico, and Alaska has driven up the price of gas? Question: Do you know how much California pays public schools for each student? Answer: California pays more than $14,000 for each student, $67 BILLION a year. If there are an average of 25 students in each public school classroom, that equals $350,000 per classroom. The average wage for a California elementary school teacher is approximately $50,000. That leaves $300,000 per classroom. Where's the money? Why do parents have to give teachers money each year to buy supplies like paper and pencils? Where's the money? Pensions? Benefits? Question: Does the Government abuse their credit card? Answer: At the end of each month WE must pay at least the minimum on each credit card. If WE don't pay the balance off each month, the credit card company charges US interest on the amount WE don't pay. At some point WE will discover that OUR balances are so high that WE will never be able to pay off OUR credit card debt, and must declare bankruptcy. Our government continues to borrow $.40 of every dollar spent! This is a "credit card" WE can never pay off! It has to stop! Question: How much is Obama's portion of the National Debt, really? Answer: Do WE as taxpayers really owe that $5 TRILLION dollars that Obama ran up? In fact, WE taxpayers owe $10 TRILLION dollars, not just $5 TRILLION! What did WE taxpayer's get for that $5 TRILLION dollars of any value to offset that $5 TRILLION debt? Apparently nothing! Money doesn't disappear into thin air - it goes somewhere to somebody! Wouldn't you like to know who got it? Without this information YOU are powerless to change anything. Elected officials do NOT want you to have that information because you could hold them accountable. I bet a lot of them would wind up in prison! It is in their interest to keep you in the dark. It is up to you to turn on the lights! |
The PAOLI VICTORY CENTER is the location of our August 10th VF Patriots Mtg. This is a phone bank location with 15 phones in Ste. 300 of the DEPOT SHOPPES 21 Plank Avenue, Paoli, PA , behind the Burger King on Lancaster Ave. Salome Gasabile is the Victory Field Director here and she'd welcome you ANY time. Already 10 people have volunteered to work the phones that night, but MORE are needed to cover EVERY phone from 6:00 - 9:00 P.M. and relieve each other for dinner breaks, etc. Peg Layden Phone Bank Chairman 610 644-6161 STOP the Smartmeter NOW Dear Patriots, Just to make you aware, Smartmeters are here. After thorough investigation and talking with PECO, they are currently installing Smartmeters in PA. Several people have contacted PECO and told them that we did not want the Smartmeter. Their response is they run the risk of having their electricity turned off. Just a background on Smartmeters: In 2008, Act 129 was passed and signed into law by Governor Rendell to make Smartmeters mandatory in PA. How will this affect you? You will be required to install a smart meter in your home which will be monitored by your electric company on a minute to minute basis. The video below explains how the smartmeter was started and where they plan to go with this which will be monitored constantly (new utilities will have smart meter chips in them. Do you want PECO or the Government monitoring your electricity usage? If this is such a great thing, why is it being forced upon us and if not taken, you take the risk of having your power turned off. Once on the grid, the government through PECO will be able to monitor each and control all of your electric utilities. Do you want the department of energy monitoring your usage of electric via PECO and possibly turning off your electric and certain peak hours (as explained in this video). http://www.wfmz.com/news/news-regional-berks/Met-Ed-customers-seeing-red-over-green-program/-/121418/15203070/-/prtufy/-/index.html What you can do: Representative Reese from Westmoreland County has introduced two bills which are in the Consumer Affairs Committee. ONE BILL WOULD ALLOW FOR OPTING OUT OF GETTING A SMART METER THE OTHER BILL WOULD REQUIRE CONSUMER CONSENT BEFORE INFORMATION FROM THE METER COULD BE SHARED WITH A GOVERNMENT AGENCY. Please contact the people listed in the link and let them know that we want these bills brought to the floor for the vote. This is our local electric company being used for the UN Agenda 21 (Sustainable Development). We need everyone's involvement so pass on to everyone you know. Let's make an effort to get this out of committee. http://www.repreese.com/NewsItem.aspx?NewsID=13371 http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/cteeInfo/cteeInfo.cfm?cde=10&body=H Explanation of Smartmeters is in this link. It is a little long, but you need to see how the global market is taking over our liberties. http://www.freedomadvocates.org/video/watch/129_technocracy_sustainable_development_and_the_smart_grid/ By the way, PECO took 200 million in stimulus money in PA to implement the smartmeters. They are using taxpayers money to enslave us. http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2009/10 Please contact state representatives immediately. Let's protect our properties rights. http://stopsmartmeters.org/how-you-can-stop-smart-meters/ I have contacted PECO and told them not to install a smartmeter on my house. I would suggest doing the same with your electric company. They need a loud outcry from the american people. I will also be putting this sticker on my meter. I will be editing the wording down below, but here it is. http://turn.org/downloads/TURN-Do-Not-Install-the-Smart-Meter.pdf?utm_source=turnweb&utm_medium=download-sign&utm_content=DIA%2Bpage&utm_campaign=smart-meter Blessings, Mark, Betty, Jeff, Joe & Michele VFP Steering Committee |

Specifically, we are missing what our Islamist enemies call their 'civilization jihad' - a form of warfare that employs manipulative financial techniques, lawfare, infiltration of our civil institutions and government and insidious information dominance. Together, these have the effect of exploiting our liberties and governing structures against us, so that our leaders wind up imposing the very anti-American values that our enemies promote.
Welcome to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within - a 10-part, web-based video briefing that is designed to explain why and how this is happening.
It addresses a threat most Americans are unaware even exists within our country, let alone the degree of peril it represents. The threat is the totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine its adherents call "shariah" and the organized, disciplined and increasingly successful efforts by such adherents-- most especially the Muslim Brotherhood-- to bring it here.
We are making this course available in the hope of encouraging, informing and broadening support for national efforts to defeat the insinuation into this country of shariah's anti-constitutional and seditious program.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization
Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.
The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

The U.S. Constitution
A Reader
Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.

About Hillsdale College
Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."
Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs. Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012. |

The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:
- Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
- Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
- Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care
The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

Dems Caught Trying to Register Deceased Voters and Pets!
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's campaign is asking Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to launch an investigation into voter-registration forms that are being sent to Virginia residents and addressed to deceased relatives, children, family pets and others ineligible to vote. The errant mailings from the Washington-based nonprofit group Voter Participation Center have befuddled many Virginia residents, leading to hundreds of complaints. The organization has been mass-mailing the forms - pre-populated with key information such as names and addresses - to primarily Democratic-leaning voting blocs such as young adults, unmarried women, African-Americans and Latinos. In a letter to Cuccinelli's office and the State Board of Elections, Kathryn Bieber, an attorney for the Romney campaign, calls for an investigation into the matter by law-enforcement officials, claiming that the mailings appear to violate "at least one and maybe several Virginia laws aimed at ensuring a fair election." Post Continues on www2.timesdispatch.com |
Justice Department Blocks Voter ID at Every Turn
People seemingly voting after they've been dead for years. Drug kingpins buying votes from poor people to sway elections. Non-citizens being bussed to the polls and coached on how to vote. Stories of voting fraud are shocking, and states have been taking action to make sure that elections are secure. But the Justice Department, led by Attorney General Eric Holder, has blocked states at almost every turn. This is the same Justice Department that stopped a non-partisan election reform by arguing that if party affiliation were removed from a ballot, African-American voters wouldn't be able to identify and vote for the Democrats. Holder has continued to stoke the racial fires, calling a requirement for voters to produce photo identification a "poll tax." Heritage expert Hans von Spakovsky said this argument is merely political. "Holder continues to perpetuate the incendiary error to the public, knowing that the poll-tax assertion is a racially charged one that should not be used lightly," von Spakovsky said. He explained:
Even the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals-the most liberal appeals court in the country-did not buy the Holder poll tax claim when it reviewed Arizona's voter ID law. In Gonzalez v. Arizona (2012), the Ninth Circuit held that even though "obtaining the free identification required under [Arizona law] may have a cost," such immaterial costs are not a poll tax.
Holder is now "investigating" Pennsylvania's voter ID law, on the left's charge that it disenfranchises minorities. Former Congressman Artur Davis, an African-American from Alabama who served in Congress as a Democrat from 2003 to 2011, finds this argument incredibly insulting. Speaking at The Heritage Foundation yesterday, Davis held up his driver's license and said, "This is not a billy club. It is not a fire hose. I used to represent Birmingham and Selma, Alabama, and I know something about fire hoses." In states that have voter ID laws, the real-world results show that minorities have not been disenfranchised by any means. States that require ID to vote have offered free IDs to anyone who does not have one already. In Kansas, which allows any of nine different forms of ID as proof of identity to vote:
Out of a total of 1.713 million registered voters in Kansas, only 32 people had requested a free photo ID as of May 4, 2012. That represents only 0.002 percent of the registered voters in the state. Of those 32 voters, 80 percent were white, 10 percent were black, and the race or ethnicity of 10 percent was unknown. Thus, there is no evidence that minority voters were disproportionately affected.
Georgia, which has had voter ID since 2007, allows six different forms of ID to vote. And there has been no stampede of would-be voters who lack identification: "The number of photo IDs issued by Georgia to individuals who did not already have one of the forms of ID acceptable under state law is remarkably small, averaging less 0.05 percent in most years, and not even reaching three-tenths of 1 percent in a presidential election year." What happened to minority voting after the law went into effect? In the 2008 presidential election, Hispanic voting in Georgia increased by 140 percent over the 2004 election. African-American voting increased by 42 percent. That is also a higher rate of increase than in other states without voter ID. Von Spakovsky notes:
The increase in turnout of both Hispanics and blacks in the 2008 presidential election after the voter ID law became effective is quite remarkable, particularly given the unproven and totally speculative claims of the Justice Department that the voter ID requirements of Texas and South Carolina will somehow have a discriminatory impact on Hispanic and black voters. In fact, Georgia had the largest turnout of minority voters in its history.
The evidence that producing photo ID is a burden simply isn't there. "How can it be a burden to ask people to do something they do all the time?" asked Congressman Davis, who said he went to a news organization to do an interview on voter ID and had to produce his driver's license to enter the news organization. The Justice Department requires ID from visitors as well. Voter ID battles are not over, and activist groups are trying everything they can think of to challenge these requirements. The Minnesota legislature passed a referendum that placed the question of voter ID on the ballot for citizens to decide. But the ballot question is under litigation because the League of Women Voters has sued, arguing that the question is "misleading" to voters. The Minnesota Supreme Court will be considering it. In the state of Kentucky, it has become clear that buying votes is a common practice. A person's vote can often be bought for $50. Recently, it has come to light that cocaine and marijuana dealers are using drug money to buy votes and turn elections. According to one report, "In the Eastern District of Kentucky alone, more than 20 public elected officials and others have either been convicted or pleaded guilty in various vote-buying cases just in the last two years." America cannot allow its elections to be anything but secure and legal. Preventing voter fraud is common sense, and it is outrageous that the U.S. Justice Department would stand in the way. Victory Center" on Facebook
-Gabriel Malor
Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on. RedState Morning Briefing
For July 30, 2012
1. Obama Administration To Increase Fast & Furious After Aurora Shootings
The only saving grace of having a president devoid of principles, experience, or class is that he and his sycophants, when under pressure, routinely push forward statements and ideas that are so bizarre as to be unbelievable outside a very low-brow comedy routine.
For instance. Having suffered through 40 months of economic mismanagement unlike anything we've experienced since FDR, we're told by the president, with no apparent sense of irony, that the private sector is "doing fine" and it is the government sector, that sector which is loss center on the national ledgers, that is hurting. Ordinarily, hovering with 15+% unemployment (U-6) is not considered "doing fine" and reducing government workers would be seen a good thing for the economy. The same applies with Obama's essay into economic philosophy where we found that all business success flows from government expenditures via his infamous "somebody else made that happen" comment.
Now we are seeing the same effect taking hold in the aftermath of the tragic shooting in Aurora, CO.
2. Jonathan Chait Hears A Dog Whistle
We've been told now for over four years that any criticism of Obama is not based on his ineptness, incompetence, corruption, or moral cowardice but rather on our own racism.
If you want to know why Obama's "you didn't build that" statement resonates, it has nothing to do with Obama's dislike for America or his rejection of hard work and exceptionalism as American values. Rather it is because you are racist. Don't trust me, Jonathan Chait at New York Magazine, offers this as proof.
Please click here for the rest of the post.
3. Bloomberg's Nanny-State Receives Help from Nanny-International
Since the shooting in Aurora, Colorado, conservatives have been groaning and rolling our collective eyes at Nanny-in-Chief Mayor Mike Bloomberg's fresh calls for gun control. This followed our recent groaning and collective eye-rolling at the Big Nanny's moves to ban the Big Gulp. And our prior groaning and collective eye-rolling at moves to ban smoking in outdoor, public places like parks.
We can groan, eye-roll and mock Mr. Bloomberg all we want, of course, but the sad fact is that he has allies. And they're not just your average nanny-loving American liberals. They include some people with substantially more influence, who work for powerful international organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO).
Please click here for the rest of the post.
4. Conservative Grassroots Must Claim Texas Victory
Rumors of the Tea Party's demise have been greatly exaggerated, as Mark Twain might say.
Following massive victories across the country, which netted 63 House pickups and seven new Republican senators last cycle, this year alone, the Tea Party has won important primary contests with conservative candidates in Indiana and Nebraska.
But the biggest prize is Texas.
A state of 25 million people with 20 media markets that each possess at least one daily newspaper and one local TV station, if the Tea Party can rise up and defeat an establishment, ultra-wealthy candidate in the largest red state in the country, it will change politics in America.
By now, you know about Ted Cruz.

Refer to Obama's energy czar Dr. Steven Chu
as "the Tin Foil Hat guy" or the "Santorini guy" after his brilliant scheme-proposed at a 2008 London climate change conference-to paint all our rooftops and sidewalks white, in a kind of Greek Island style. Apparently the energy saved would be the equivalent of taking all cars off the road for eleven years. Suggest that maybe next he'll want to be examining the potential of mining the moon for green cheese or extracting sunbeams from cucumbers.

The opening Olympic ceremony in London has been so progressive that all the planned competitive events in the following week will surely be seen as an outmoded form of ancient barbarism, which they are. Archery? Javelin? They can only seem useful and not a complete waste of people's calories if we tie Sarah Palin to the stake as a target. The most barbaric part of the games is, of course, the very notion of competition. The progressive society of the future will surely have Progressive Olympics - beginning with solar-powered Olympic flame and Section 8 housing at the Olympic Village, to equality of outcomes for all! All the medals to be replaced with Carbon Credits and redistributed to the athletically challenged. National Anthems to be replaced with songs from Glee and the term "winners" with "disproportionally successful participants." And if we still get the feeling that our self-esteem hasn't been sufficiently elevated, we will blame the previous Olympics for our failure to achieve equal results at this Olympics. MORE >>

The 2012 Olympic Games officially open in London tonight. Across the U.S. and around the world Jewish communities, political leaders and others will gather to observe a minute of silence in memory of the 11 Israeli athletes, coaches and referees who were murdered by Palestinian terrorists 40 years ago at the Olympics in Munich. Regrettably, the International Olympic Committee, as it has done every four years over the past four decades, refused to schedule an official moment of silence, ideally at the opening ceremony. AJC has advocated for the moment of silence, published op-ed articles in major newspapers. And, it is the theme of David Harris's radio message for this week, which we are sharing with you. Remembering Murdered Israeli Olympians LISTEN. The London Olympics open this Friday. They'll be marred by an omission. Despite the pleas of American leaders... of the Australian, Canadian and German parliaments... of thousands around the world, including many listeners to this radio spot... and of the victims' families, there will be no moment of silence for the 11 Israeli Olympians murdered by Palestinian terrorists, 40 years ago, at the Munich games. The International Olympic Committee refuses, claiming no precedent. Nonsense. There have been other moments of silence. Instead, as widely reported, the IOC yielded to Arab pressure - simply because the victims were Israeli. Shame! If the IOC won't remember them this week, AJC will.
Their memories live on.
This is David Harris of AJC.

THE INTERFAITH TASKFORCE FOR AMERICA AND ISRAEL (ITAI)

Friday, July 27, 2012
Dear ITAI MEMBERS AND DONORS:
ITAI ON THE MOVE...ITAI welcomes its newest member Ari Marchand of Cheltenham, PA/Israel...Charles Kahn and Joseph Puder will meet Rev. (PCUSA) Scott Fischer in Lancaster...ITAI member Larry Hollin, Esq. was appointed chair of the Middle East Forum, Philadelphia branch.
This ITAI WEEKLY MIDDLE EAST REPORT asks When Will the Palestinians make "painful Concessions" for Peace? Arab-Israeli peacemaking has been typified by one-sided concessions. Israel gives up territory, prisoners, economic assets, etc., while the Arabs and Palestinian-Arabs give in return- a cold "peace" in the case of Egypt, a fragile peace in Jordan's case, and incitement, hate, and terror by the Palestinians...
WHEN WILL THE PALESTINIANS MAKE "PAINFUL CONCESSIONS" FOR PEACE?
By: Joseph Puder
During her visit to Israel on July 16, 2012 at meetings held with Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton Secretary pushed Israel to make gestures to strengthenthe Palestinian leader (Mahmoud Abbas), according to Israeli press reports. Once again, the Obama administration is expecting Israel to make concessions that would entice Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to return to the negotiating table, but what about parity? What concessions painful or otherwise, have the Palestinians been pushed to make?
Should Abbas be bribed monetarily by the Obama administration and its western allies to return to "peace" negotiations? Will he be willing to compromise on the Palestinian right of return, or on recognizing Israel as the Jewish homeland? The answer is no.
Addressing a Joint session of the U.S. Congress on May 24, 2011, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's Prime Minister declared that "We must... find a way to forge a lasting peace with the Palestinians, and that will mean painful concessions on Israel's part that include ceding some places that are part of the Jewish homelands." The Palestinian response came fast and furious from Nabil Shaath, a top aide to Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority. Shaath told the Associated Press (AP) that the outlines of the peace deal described by Netanyahu constituted a "declaration of war."
What exactly did Netanyahu propose that constituted, according to Shaath, a "declaration of war?" Netanyahu said that "Jerusalem must never again be divided. Jerusalem must remain the united capital of Israel." Netanyahu also alluded to President Obama's statement that "Israel's borders after any peace agreement will be different than they were before the 1967 war." Netanyahu proceeded to explain the reasons for the lack of peace hitherto, "The reason a peace agreement hasn't been struck between Israel and the Palestinians is that the other side is "unwilling to accept a Palestinian state if it meant accepting a Jewish State alongside it." Netanyahu added: It is time for the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to stand before his people and say "I will accept a Jewish State."
According to the AP, Shaath said that Netanyahu's proposal ignores the Israeli-Arab borders that existed before the 1967 war--lines Shaath alleged that President Obama delineated (in May 2011) that should form the basis of any Israeli-Palestinian deal.
The principle features of a two-state solution are (a) the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza while providing Israel with secure, i.e. strategic if not historical boundaries. That was the spirit and essence of UNSC Resolution 242, which premised "territories (not all) for peace," albeit, it was an agreement directed at the Arab States and Israel, the Palestinians were not even a party to it. Nowhere did UNSC Resolution 242 compel Israel to return to the June 4, 1967 borders, moreover, it conditioned Israeli withdrawal from captured territories on an Arab peace agreement and recognition of Israel. Both Egypt and Jordan made peace with Israel and received all the captured territories. Interesting to note that in 1988 Jordan turned responsibility for negotiating the future of the West Bank over to the Palestinian Liberation Organization- P.L.O.
The Oslo Accords signed at the White House lawn in 1993, specified a gradual return of Israeli held territory to the P.L.O. with Area A (Palestinian cities and towns) under full Palestinian control, Area B (rural areas) under Palestinian civil control and Israeli military control, and Area C (Israeli settlements with 350,000 Jews, and a sparsely populated area with less than 50,000 Palestinian) under full Israeli control. It further conditioned gradual Israeli withdrawal on (b) the Palestinian Authority ceasing its murderous incitement against Israel and Jews in the mosques, media, and educational system. The Accords also called for (c) mutual recognition, and the recognition of Israel as a Jewish State as well as (d) that the PA eradicate the terrorist infrastructure and maintain a police force not an army.
Nearly 20 years have passed since the Oslo Accords were signed and the hateful Palestinian incitement, which manifests itself in brutal acts of violence including the murder of five members of the Fogel family in the West Bank, continues unabated. The terrorist infrastructure in Hamas controlled Gaza is stronger than ever with the Islamic Republic of Iran providing Hamas with lethal weapons, training, and cash.
On a tour of Arab capitals Mahmoud Abbas refused to recognize Israel as a Jewish State. Ha'aretz, an Israeli daily reported on December 1, 2007, "Historically, there are two states - Israel and Palestinian. Israel has Jews and other people, and this we are ready to recognize, but nothing else..." the Israel radio quoted Abbas as saying shortly after he landed in Saudi Arabia after brief stops in Egypt and Jordan. On October 12, 2010, Ha'aretz quoted a Palestinian official as stating the "PA willneverrecognize Israel as a Jewish state." PM Netanyahu proposed an Israeli freeze on settlements in exchange for Palestinian recognition of Israel as a Jewish State, to which Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said, Netanyahu's demand "could never be accepted."
To bring the Palestinians to the negotiating table-let alone achieving a peace accord, Israel has to make advance concessions such as a freeze on construction in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria Jewish communities. Moreover, Israel has offered to release Palestinian prisoners convicted of terrorist attacks. The Times of Israel reported on July 10, 2012 that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has offered to release more than 100 Palestinian security prisoners in order to restart peace talks, but Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas partially rejected the offer. Part of the package Netanyahu offered Abbas would have provided the Palestinian security services with new weapons. Abbas demanded that the prisoners be released at once.
The U.S., Europeans, and the U.N. have pampered the Palestinians for years now, and it seems inconceivable that these "pillars of power" have ever considered asking what "painful concessions" the Palestinians should be offering for peace? Mahmoud Abbas, in an interview with the Jerusalem based Al-Quds Arab newspaper (September 2010) stated that he rejects Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's demand that he recognize Israel as a Jewish state. He said the issue is "a ploy by Netanyahu to deny Arabs the right of return to their former homes in Israel." To put it plainly, Abbas seeks to deny Israel its identity as a Jewish State while insisting on the Palestinian right of return, which is a formula for Israel's destruction by demography.
In his book, The Oslo Syndrome: Delusions of a People Under Siege, Kenneth Levin compares the Israeli political leadership to the "abused child" syndrome. The abused child believes that he is responsible for his parent abuse and the only way to solve the problem is for him to behave nicely - thus providing him with the illusion that he is in control of the situation. Similarly, Israel is under the illusion that by making unilateral concessions peace with the Arab Palestinians will become a reality. The political elites in Israel have dreamed up the notion that if only Israel withdraws from Gaza or Judea and Samaria, peace will reign. The lessons of the failed Gaza withdrawal and the continued abuse of the Oslo Accords may be recognized by the Israelis, but have not been learned. The road to peace will be more solidly paved when Israel and the West demand that the Palestinians make "painful concessions" for peace.

Netanyahu contradicts Obama's claim that sanctions are helping to thwart Iran
Posted: 29 Jul 2012 03:14 PM PDT
(Paul Mirengoff)
Barack Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu have had their share of, shall we say, differences of opinion. The latest concerns the efficacy of sanctions against Iran. This morning on ABC, President Obama's mouthpiece Robert Gibbs claimed that "we have made progress in delaying [Iran's] nuclear program." "Our goal," he added "is to prevent Iran from having a nuclear program and I think we're making progress on that."
But Netanyahu, the world leader with the biggest stake in making real progress on this front, doesn't see any. He stated:
We have to be honest and say that all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota. And that's why I believe that we need a strong and credible military threat coupled with the sanctions to have a chance to change that situation.
So who is right, the man whose country faces the prospect of a devastating Iranian nuclear attack or the man who needs to persuade American voters that he's tough on Iran?
Well, let's see. The Washington Post has declared that "The danger Iran will become a nuclear power is growing, not diminishing." And the Wall Street Journal reports that the Obama administration has granted waivers from sanctions to all twenty of Iran's major trading partners, including China. As the Journal explained:
Though economic sanctions still haven't slowed or stopped Iran's nuclear drive, the Obama Administration has decided to make them even weaker. The Iran sanctions regime is looking like the U.S. tax code-filled with loopholes. It's so weak, in fact, that all 20 of Iran's major trading partners are now exempt from them. We've arrived at a kind of voodoo version of sanctions. They look real, insofar as Congress forced them into a bill President Obama had to sign in December. The Administration has spoken incantations about their powers. But if you're a big oil importer in China, India or 18 other major economies, the sanctions are mostly smoke.
But at least Obama is consistent. He attempted to water down the congressionally mandated sanctions before they were enacted. Now, he's undermining them by granting waivers.
So I think we should take the word of Netanyahu, who has real skin in the game, not the word of the perenially duplicitous American president, whose only skin is political. The sanctions have not set back the Iranian program by one iota. Nor, Netanyahu could have added, was Obama ever serious about setting that program back.

Daniel Pipes on Romney In Jerusalem
Posted: 29 Jul 2012 01:19 PM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
Daniel Pipes's judgment about the Middle East is as good as anyone's, so I was interested to see what he thought about Mitt Romney's Jerusalem speech. In a word, he was impressed. Pipes writes on Romney's Remarkable Speech in Jerusalem:
Romney, with the Old City in the background
Pipes quotes some of the more powerful passages in Romney's speech, emphasizing the close ties between the U.S. and Israel. He concludes:
Comments: (1) Obama and Romney stand as far apart on Israel as they do on the sources of economic growth. (2) Over and over again, Romney returned to the moral bonds between the two countries; yes, there are mutual benefits from our connection, but ultimately it reflects something higher and greater than any of us. (3) Were he elected, it will be fascinating to watch to what extent the outlook expressed today will convey to the workaday policy issues. I expect it will substantially convey.

Dan Penn returns
Posted: 29 Jul 2012 01:00 PM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
Legendary songwriter Dan Penn returns to the Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant in downtown Minneapolis for shows this coming Sunday and Monday, August 5 and 6. Penn's site is here; his bio is here. The show is an almost unbelievable review of Penn's almost unbelievable career at the heart of soul/rhythm and blues over the past 50 years.
I have a pretty good idea what he'll be doing at the Dakota next week because I attended Penn's two beautiful shows there almost exactly a year ago. Buy tickets for this year's shows online here or call for tickets at (612) 332-1010 during business hours. Penn's appearance in Minneapolis presents a rare opportunity - it does not appear that he is touring - to see a man without whom much of modern soul music would not exist.
Last year Penn appeared in Minneapolis through the good offices of local record store owner Mark Treehuis of Treehouse Records, in the first of Mark's planned "unsung legends" series. As applied to Penn, the appellation of "unsung legend" was a slight misnomer. Penn is a legend who has been sung, so to speak, by Peter Guralnick, in his great book Sweet Soul Music: Rhythm and Blues and the Southern Dream of Freedom. Guralnick designates Penn the "secret hero" of the book:
Dan Penn is in many ways the secret hero of this book. A singer-songwriter-occasional guitar player from Vernon, a tiny town eight miles south of Muscle Shoals, he arrived in Florence [Alabama] with a song that he had written ("Is a Bluebird Blue?") which everyone knew was going to be a hit and which subsequently became one for Conway Twitty in 1960. He also came as something of fully formed personality, even at the age of sixteen or seventeen....Dan Penn...was as definite about his musical likes and dislikes as he would be ten or twenty years later - after he had teamed up with Chips Moman, written dozens of classic r&b hits ("Dark End of the Street," "Take Me (Just As I Am)," "Sweet Inspiration," "Out of Left Field," "Do Right Woman,") with either Chips or Spooner Oldham, produced the Box Tops' #1 hit, "The Letter," and tossed off hundreds of rough demos and studio versions of his own songs, which by the account of most of the participants easily surpassed the records that were actually released.
In his show Penn ranges widely, conjuring up the spirits of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, James Carr, Jerry Wexler, and many others with whom he has worked in the course of his distinguished career. Penn's own voice is deeply soulful and emotive. As Guralnick's account intimates, Penn's versions of the songs shine even by comparison with the hit versions. In the video below, for example, dating back to a 1999 performance with his sometime collaborator Spooner Oldham, he performs "I'm Your Puppet," a smash for James and Bobby Purify in 1965.
At the first of last year's shows at the Dakota I ran into KFAI deejay Pete Lee, the omniscient proprietor of Bop Street, the long-running Monday afternoon drive-time show from which I have learned so much over the past twenty years. I asked Pete why Penn was the hero of Guralnick's great book. Pete patiently explained: "Because he wrote the songs." That is about the size of it.

Weekend Wrap of News You Can Use

More from the "What Would We Do Without Social Scientists" file, a new study out of Britain that finds professional women benefit from flirting. I'm still waiting for social psychologists to replicate the finding from a few years back that women in bars get better looking the more you drink. (A real study, as I recall, but I can't find it. All I can find right now is the study that alcohol makes you smarter, but I already knew that.)
Meanwhile, having no sooner noted the millstone of endless exaggeration and scaremongering by the climateers earlier today, I stumbled across the all-time stupidest climate claim ever. Even though it's from 2004, it's still worth highlighting here: Can the Earth Explode as a Result of Global Warming? I'm pretty sure the answer is No. Can this possibly be satire? Hard to tell. I'm sure some of the climateers will believe it, since they'll believe almost anything.
Did you know that California's official state mollusk is the banana slug? Actually, not quite. The Democratic legislature once upon a time passed a bill to designate the slug as the official mollusk of the Golden State, but then-Governor George Deukmejian wisely vetoed the bill. But the Democratic urge to make the slug official explains a lot, doesn't it? Seems more fitting for the official mascot of California's economy if you ask me. Now we hear that Fresno may be the next California municipality to file for bankruptcy. Never fear: Jerry Brown is going to build the first leg of California's high-speed rail not far from Fresno-just the kind of public "investment" that business really needs to get going, right? Instead, I'm sure the local farming community would settle for some water-that's the kind of government service that actually helps the private sector, and exactly the kind of government service California's central valley is not getting from Washington these days. In the meantime, California will just have to get by with its official insect-the Dog Faced Butterfly (not making this up).
NPR has discovered the problem with hyphenated names for married couples: after just one additional generation, the names start to pile up to absurd lengths. Well congratulations, NPR-you've just caught up with Ronald Reagan, who was on to this problem in a radio broadcast back around 1978, called "What's In a Name?" (Not available online anywhere apparently, but included in this CD collection of Reagan's pre-presidential radio addresses. UPDATE: Found it! Hat tip: Jeryl Bier. Very much worth a listen, and you'll see that Reagan does a better job of the story than NPR.) But once again we see Ronaldus Magnus is three decades ahead of NPR. But why should that surprise us any more?
Finally, I haven't weighed in on the Chick-fil-A controversy, but the photo below warms my heart, as well as ensuring that the Left will continue to disgrace itself with more expressions of liberal "tolerance."
If the Left wasn't angry already, this ought to do it.

Learning from Seyed Mousavian
Posted: 29 Jul 2012 07:17 AM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
Seyed Hossein Moussavian is a former Iranian nuclear negotiator now setting up shop as Research Scholar at the Program on Science and Global Security at Princeton University. Jay Solomon provided the background on Mousavian's departure from Iran in a 2010 Wall Street Journal article, but I first heard of Mousavian in a Journal book review last weekend by Robert Bartley Journalism Fellow Sohrab Ahmari.
Despite falling out with a powerful faction in the Iranian government, Mousavian continues to peddle disinformation regarding the Iranian regime's nuclear program. Mousavian has not only set up shop at Princeton, he has written a new book recounting his days as a nuclear negotiator on behalf of the Iranian regime. The book is published by a prestigious Western institute (the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where Alger Hiss served as president from 1946-1949), yet somehow Ahmari is not favorably impressed:
Consider former Iranian nuclear negotiator Seyed Hossein Mousavian and "The Iranian Nuclear Crisis," his chronicle of talks over the past decade involving the Tehran regime, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the European Union and others. Early in the book, Mr. Mousavian recounts a 2010 meeting involving the emir of Qatar and Sen. John Kerry. The emir tells the American: "Based on 30 years of experience with the Iranians, they will give you 100 words. Trust only one of the 100." Mr. Mousavian presents the scene as evidence of Sunni-Arab leaders like the emir poisoning relations between the West and the Islamic Republic. But readers would do well to keep the emir's advice in mind as they approach the author's own many thousands of words.
"The Iranian Nuclear Crisis" is billed as a memoir, but it less resembles a personal narrative than a diplomatic brief, complete with awkward bureaucratic prose and key sections stippled by bullet points. Mousavian covers negotiations during the administration of President Mohammad Khatami in the early 2000s, when the author headed the foreign-relations committee of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, and during the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad era beginning in 2005, the first two years of which he spent advising the council on foreign policy. (He moved to the United States in 2009.)
Although he has set up shop at Princeton and had his memoir published by a prestigious Western institute, Mousavian appears still to be plying the wares he had on offer as a representative of the Iranian regime:
A peculiar aspect of the book can be found in the endnotes, where an editor apparently felt obliged to acknowledge where the author parts company with the public record. For instance, Mr. Mousavian flatly declares that, by October 2003, Iran's disclosures and leaks of other information "had left no major gaps in knowledge" at the IAEA about Iran's nuclear activities. Six years later U.S. intelligence would uncover, among other things, a secret uranium-enrichment plant near the holy city Qom. A supremely understated editor's note about Mr. Mousavian's statement cautions that later investigations "raised additional issues about which the IAEA has sought more information and greater transparency."
Ahmari nevertheless finds some value, of a kind, in the book. What can we learn from Mousavian? Ahmari writes:
..."The Iranian Nuclear Crisis" is a valuable text for a number of reasons. First, it offers a glimpse of what negotiators face when dealing with Iranian officials who are masters of evasion and obfuscation. Mr. Mousavian, for example, rarely admits Iran's multiple breaches of nonproliferation statutes. (And when he does, he blames "administrative problems," "bureaucratic passivity," "technical ambiguities" and the like.) Readers could be forgiven if they came away from the book with the impression that when Iran does comply with nonproliferation laws, the country is doing a favor to the West and must be rewarded with concessions on other fronts.
In the 1990s, before Mr. Mousavian became a nuclear negotiator, he was Iran's ambassador to Germany. It was during this period that four Iranian dissidents, three of them Kurdish leaders, were gunned down at a Berlin restaurant in 1992, murders for which a German court eventually convicted an Iranian intelligence officer and three Lebanese henchmen. The German federal high court also issued an arrest warrant for the Iranian minister of intelligence.
In Roya Hakakian's 2011 book about the episode, "Assassins of the Turquoise Palace," the author reports that Mr. Mousavian, the ambassador, initially dismissed the charges as a "joke," predicting in a television interview that "the judges are sure to vote in Iran's favor." Once the court issued its judgment in 1997, the German government requested that he along with members of the intelligence section of the embassy be removed. Four Iranian diplomats were eventually expelled by Germany, and Mr. Mousavian decamped back to Tehran not long after.
Today Mr. Mousavian is a research scholar at Princeton University. He recalls the pre-Ahmadinejad era with pride, casting himself as "someone who has for twenty years endeavored through Iran's foreign policy to eliminate problems between Iran and the West." Among those efforts, Mr. Mousavian says, was his role during the 1980s in "Iran's humanitarian intervention to secure the release of Western hostages in Lebanon." By his account, the U.S. ignored Iran's show of goodwill and later unjustly imposed sanctions and other forms of pressure on the regime. Mr. Mousavian describes the hostage matter-dozens of Westerners, the greatest number American, were seized throughout the 1980s-as though the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah had acted independently in the abductions. But as shown by communications intercepted by American intelligence, the hostages were in fact taken at the behest of Hezbollah's primary sponsor: the Tehran regime.
Surely Mousavian's presence on our shores at Princeton is worthy of note along with what amounts, by Ahmari's description, to something like service to an odious enemy of the United States.

Analyze this

The AP story on Israel's purported intelligence threat to the United States - a story that is linked on Drudge - reads to me like an assault on Israel emanating from the upper reaches of the Obama administration and like minded supporters. According to the AP, with attribution to "current and former US officials," Israel is the "number 1 counterintelligence threat" to the CIA's Near East Division.
If the AP story is true, we can be relieved that, unlike several other states of the Near East, Israel is - how to put it? - no threat to the United States. On the other hand, I doubt that the story is true. The Times of Israel reports:
In an unusually brief SMS message to Israeli journalists, the media advisers of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote: "In response to the report about the CIA, the Prime Minister's Office states that this [is] a false report."
I wouldn't necessarily take the statement at face value, but you have to wonder what is going on here.

The Pelosi/Hunt tag team
Posted: 28 Jul 2012 01:32 PM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
In Nancy Pelosi's interview with Bloomberg's Albert Hunt, Pelosi purported to explain Republican support of Israel, with an assist from Hunt himself:
HUNT: Do you think he'll do as well with the Jewish vote this time as he did last time?
PELOSI: The election will tell us that.
HUNT: What do you think?
PELOSI: But I - I think that he will. I think that he will, because the fact is when the facts get out. You know, as many of the Republicans are using Israel as an excuse, what they really want are tax cuts for the wealthy. So Israel, that can be one reason they put forth.
HUNT: That's why some of the Republican Jewish supporters are really active.
PELOSI: Well, that's how they're being exploited. And they're smart people....
Videotruffle has posted the video of this enlightening exchange here. Please check it out.
I happen to agree with Pelosi, in part. Obama will win the Jewish vote, if not by the same proportion he did in 2008, because the liberalism of American Jews is dearer to them than Israel and because the capacity for willful blindness runs deep. But Pelosi's explanation of GOP support for Israel is ludicrous and and Albert Hunt's contribution is disgusting. That Pelosi concurred with Hunt's defamation of Jewish Republicans simply adds to the disgrace here.

The Weekly Winston: Special Relationship Edition
Posted: 28 Jul 2012 10:00 AM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
In light of the salience of the "special relationship" that Obama has no use for, it is fitting for the Power Line Weekly Winston to recall some of his thoughts on the matter. To be sure, about America Churchill did once say "toilet paper too thin, newspapers too fat!," but we've solved that problem. (Has anyone noticed, for example, how thin the Los Angeles Times is these days?)
So here's one of many comments that might be sent to Obama to ponder, offered by WSC in January 1941:
It is no exaggeration to say that the future of the whole world and the hopes of a broadening civilization founded upon Christian ethics depend upon the relation between the British Empire or Commonwealth and the USA. The identity of purpose and persistence of resolve prevailing throughout the English-speaking world will, more than any other single fact, determine the way of life which will be open to the generations and perhaps to the centuries which follow our own.

Over and over again
Posted: 28 Jul 2012 08:08 AM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
It's always silly season when Nancy Pelosi deigns to address the peons. But what are we to make of this? Bill Kristol writes:
Daniel Halper has called attention to Nancy Pelosi's remarkable interview with Al Hunt on the topic of Barack Obama and Israel. I'd note one comment in particular: Pelosi's claim that President Obama "has been there [Israel] over and over again."
Wow. I'm involved with the Emergency Committee for Israel. We have an ad up in several states calling attention to the fact that President Obama, who's been quite the world traveler, has never visited Israel as president. Did we make a terrible mistake? Were we unjust to President Obama? Do we have to pull down the ad?
No, no, and no. Contrary to Pelosi's apparent claim, President Obama hasn't been to Israel over and over again. He's never been as president, which is certainly what Pelosi implied. Well, maybe he visited Israel "over and over" before becoming president, and that's what Pelosi meant to say? No. When he was senator, Obama went on two trips to Israel, once with several other freshmen members of Congress, and then as a presidential candidate. And he'd never been interested enough in Israel to visit as a private citizen. So much for the notion that Obama's been "over and over again."
So Pelosi is wrong, and the Emergency Committee is right. But Pelosi's resort to a whopper to try to reassure pro-Israel voters does suggest how worried Democrats must be about the reaction to Obama's attempt to create distance between his administration and Israel, as Obama's Israel policy gets more scrutiny.

Green Weenie of the Week: NPR
Posted: 28 Jul 2012 07:19 AM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
Although there's no rule against winning the coveted Power Line Green Weenie Award more than once, we think it's a little cheeky to win it two weeks in a row, so Bill McKibben can't have it again because of his ridiculous anti-fracking protest going off today in Washington (though it is tempting to give a group GW Award to the usual gang of pecksniffs supporting the protest). Instead, this week's winner is from the "what-took-so-long" category: NPR.
On Thursday, NPR's news blog reported: "Heat Dome" Linked to Greenland's Biggest Melt in 30 Years. A large iceberg-twice the size of Manhattan!!-broke off, and the largest area of melting ever observed was observed!* The story goes on to quote-no, not scientists, but Wired magazine and the Guardian:
Wired writes that "while no one event can be blamed on climate change, the melt is consistent with rising global temperatures." The Guardian says "the rapid melting over just four days was captured by three satellites. It has stunned and alarmed scientists, and deepened fears about the pace and future consequences of climate change."
But what do actual scientists say in NASA's press release? Are they "stunned and alarmed"?
"The Greenland ice sheet is a vast area with a varied history of change. This event, combined with other natural but uncommon phenomena, such as the large calving event last week on Petermann Glacier, are part of a complex story," said Tom Wagner, NASA's cryosphere program manager in Washington. "Satellite observations are helping us understand how events like these may relate to one another as well as to the broader climate system." . .
"Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time," says Lora Koenig, a Goddard glaciologist and a member of the research team analyzing the satellite data. "But if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome." (Emphasis added.)
No need to wait to see if melting like this continues. It's good enough for NPR and others to run with the scary story.
* And there's the key fact, by the way. The NASA press release is entitled "Satellites See Unprecedented Greenland Ice Sheet Surface Melt." Satellite data only go back 33 years.

T-Review, July 2012
(a monthly recap)
(While we continue to pray for the 70-plus victims of the recent Aurora, Colorado massacre, it is time to evaluate the wild charges leveled by some in the media.)
ABC's Ross & DNC's Wasserman Schultz Share a Common Bond
While public mass killings in America have become far too commonplace,
laying the blame on people not connected with that violence has become far
too frequent.
Whether it be the Atlanta Olympic bombing, the Tucson shooting, or the Aurora, Colorado massacre, the false pronouncements of guilt that were generated in those incidents served to either damage or completely destroy the reputations of innocent parties.
In the Atlanta Olympic bombing that left one dead and more than a hundred injured, Richard Jewell was falsely targeted and accused. Before his untimely death at age 44, he did receive some monetary relief for his suffering--but for over three months of his life, Mr. Jewell endured the most horrendous accusations.
But what of DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Shultz falsely linking the Tea Party to the Tucson shooting in a January 2012 New Hampshire Press Conference or Brian Ross wrongly pointing the finger at a Tea Party member for the recent Colorado theatre massacre?
Both of these individuals did so, with little or no impugnity, for one reason: to smear the Tea Party, in an emotionally charged election year, for political advantage. It's that simple.
Independence Hall Tea Party Protests Wasserman Schultz
Ironically, just four days before the Colorado theatre massacre, the Independence Hall Tea Party, together with members of the Lower Bucks Tea Party Patriots and a member of the Delaware County Patriots, protested Wasserman Schultz prior to her appearance at an Obama event being held inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Philadelphia (7/16/12).
The purpose of the protest was to alert the public to the malicious indictment of murder that Wasserman Schultz had lodged against the Tea Party and to demand an apology.
Sadly, even Chris Brennan of the Daily News, in covering the Wasserman Schultz protest, did not accurately report why we were protesting her:
Outside [the Pennsylvania Convention Center], about a dozen tea party activists had their own boos for her [Wasserman Shultz], continuing to criticize comments she made in January when she called for a more civil national debate about a year after the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, an Arizona Democrat.
The tea party is demanding an apology because Wasserman Schultz cited that movement as an example of uncivil debate. Chris brennan, Daily News, 7/17/12
Politics PA, at least, accurately reported the reason for the protest:
Independence Hall Tea Partiers spent the afternoon protesting the summit because of Wasserman Schultz's involvement. She has been an outspoken opponent to the Tea Party, and protesters alleged that she linked the movement to the shooting of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords (D-AZ) in Tucson. Emily DiCicco, PoliticsPA, 7/17/12
How did Brennan come up with the idea that we were protesting Wasserman Schultz simply because she had cited the Tea Party for "uncivil debate?" (Certainly not from our press release.) If that had been her charge, we would have thankfully stayed home.
By the way, on short notice, twenty folks showed up to protest on a hot Monday afternoon work day. And, of course, we never actually got to boo Wasserman Scultz face to face as Brennan wrote.
At least we got some ink space from the Obama propaganda machine that is the LSM. (That meant less coverage for Obama.)
PA Voter ID Law Challenged by President Obama and the ACLU
Harrisburg -- As hearings were set to begin in Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court on the ACLU challenge to the state's Voter ID law, the Obama Administration, through (Contempt of Congress) US Attorney General Eric Holder, put the heavy weight of the Justice Department into motion against the enactment of this popular piece of legislation.
(Polls suggest upward of 70% of the public approves of the law.)
Rarely, if ever, has the Justice Department challenged the Voter ID law of state not directly implicated in the 1964 Voting Rights Act. Pennsylvania was clearly not one the states suppressing minority voting rights in the early 1960's nor is it doing so now--and yet Holder took action.
The most telling aspect of the hearing, so far, is that the ACLU has drudged
up so many indigent witnesses who claim they are unable get state issued ID cards at their local Penndot Offices.
Amazingly, however, these folks have no problem traveling to Harrisburg to testify about what a burden it would be for them to have to submit proper ID before voting.
The Commonwealth Court hearing will reconvene on Monday, July 30, 10 AM, PA Judicial Center, Room 3002, 601 Commonwealth Ave., Harrisburg, PA.
The hearing is open to the public.
ACTION -- Call the White House at 202.456.1111 and tell the President that rather than use the Justice Department to combat legitimate Voter ID laws in various states around the country, including Pennsylvania, he should force the Justice Department to stop covering up criminal behavior and, instead, release all documents pertaining to Fast and Furious.

SCALIA WARNS: GUNS MAY BE REGULATED
(National Journal) - Justice Antonin Scalia, one of the Supreme Court's most vocal and conservative justices, said on Sunday that the Second Amendment leaves room for U.S. legislatures to regulate guns, including menacing hand-held weapons.
"It will have to be decided in future cases," Scalia said on Fox News Sunday. But there were legal precedents from the days of the Founding Fathers that banned frightening weapons which a constitutional originalist like himself must recognize. There were also "locational limitations" on where weapons could be carried, the justice noted.
When asked if that kind of precedent would apply to assault weapons, or 100-round ammunition magazines like those used in the recent Colorado movie theater massacre, Scalia declined to speculate. "We'll see," he said. '"It will have to be decided."

One Nation Under Government, Not Under God
Obama Censors the Declaration
Americans know that the Declaration of Independence proclaims as a matter of fact that they "are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights." But when Obama recites this line, he omits the word "Creator." Listen carefully to how Obama censors that famous line. Here are his own words: "all men are created equal, that each of us are endowed with certain inalienable rights." He didn't say who endowed us.
Obama has done this so often that it can't be a slip of the tongue or a glitch of the teleprompter. Changing the words of the Declaration of Independence is part of Obama's determination to remove everything religious and every mention of God from every aspect of our public life in order to fundamentally transform us from "one nation under God" into one nation under the Federal Government, especially the executive branch, with no higher power recognized.
We should remind ourselves that the great Declaration of Independence is not only the proclamation of our independence and sovereignty, but is also the official affirmation of our belief and faith in God. The Declaration asserts God's existence as a "self-evident" truth, and states that the purpose of government is to secure our God-given unalienable individual rights.

|
|
by Breitbart News
The U.S. economy grew at a sluggish rate of 1.5 percent in the second quarter of 2012--the slowest rate in a year--according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis:
Real gross domestic product -- the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States -- increased at an annual rate of 1.5 percent in the second quarter of 2012, (that is, from the first quarter to the second quarter), according to the "advance" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 2.0 percent.
The Bureau emphasized that the second-quarter advance estimate released today is based on source data that are incomplete or subject to further revision by the source agency (see the box on page 3). The "second" estimate for the second quarter, based on more complete data, will be released on August 29, 2012.

The millions of Americans who are unemployed are an important focus for the upcoming Presidential election. The unemployment rate has also also been a potent campaign tool, as both parties have accused the other of "outsourcing" and "sending jobs overseas."
"Outsourcing" continues to make headlines. But an important question goes unaddressed: what are its real consequences?
There are a lot of myths about outsourced jobs, particularly in the manufacturing sector. The truth is that the U.S. actually leads the world in manufacturing, producing 21 percent of global manufactured products. And several big manufacturers are building new plants in the U.S., including BMW and Airbus, creating more jobs.
If the goal is to reduce unemployment, policymakers should focus on problems like red tape and over-regulation that discourage job creation. The U.S. regulatory burden continues to increase, making businesses more expensive and more difficult to operate.
Do you think that outsourcing is bad for U.S. economic recovery?
The recent discharge of one of North Korea's most powerful officials raises new concerns about power struggles within the oppressive, isolated communist state.
Vice Marshal Ri Yong-ho was ousted earlier this month from his position as chief of the Korea People's Army General Staff. While the reason for the switch was not disclosed, it came about either because dictator Kim Jong-un is feeling more confident in his role as Supreme Leader, or because older elites are pushing back against their new ruler and his inner circle, Heritage Foundation expert Bruce Klingner suggests. In either case, the dismissal indicates a growing level of instability that could have great ramifications for the U.S.
Click here to learn more about the steps the U.S. can take to prepare for possible North Korean belligerence.
What do you think the U.S. should do to prepare for a potentially belligerent North Korea?
A new tool that allows more rapid detection of hazardous biological attacks deserves congressional funding, Heritage Foundation expert Steve Bucci explains. The current BioWatch program-originally developed after the 2001 anthrax attacks-detects deadly pathogens released into the environment before they can spread. But the system has limitations, including lengthy detection times and a propensity to send false alarms.
Fortunately, an improved BioWatch system, BioWatch Generation 3, speeds detection times by up to six hours and reduces manpower needs, allowing more detection sites for the same investment.
Though we have yet to see any biological attack, even the possibility of one should justify funding for the early detection programe.
Do you think programs like BioWatch are necessary?

Alexander's Essay - July 26, 2012
Leftists Reset Their Sights on the Second Amendment
Memo to Republicans: The Topic Is Liberty, Not the 'Rights of Hunters'
"The ultimate authority ... resides in the people alone. ... The advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation ... forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition." --James Madison (Federalist No. 46)
In the wake of the tragic mass murder in Aurora, Colorado, last week, three groups weighed in on the "gun problem."
Predictably, the first two groups were Obama and his Leftist cadres, including his Leftmedia sycophants, who never "let a crisis go to waste" to advance their political agenda.
In what amounts to a major policy shift for Obama, he has made a political calculation that proposing new "gun control" measures will be a winning issue this fall. For the last two decades, gun control has been a losing proposition for Democrats, but in a desperate measure to create campaign traction, the King of Hubris has decided he can turn that around. Make no mistake, this may be a policy shift but Obama has a long history of Second Amendment opposition.
Obama was banking on the Supreme Court overturning his socialized medical care agenda so ObamaCare could be the centerpiece of his campaign, but Chief Justice John Roberts disabled that strategy.
Obama can't win on "jobs" or the success of his socialist "economic recovery plan," though, astoundingly, he is still trying to sell it as a success. From the guy who recently claimed "the private sector is doing fine," and, "If you've got a business -- you didn't build that, somebody else made that happen," comes this assertion about Mitt Romney's plan to cut taxes and spending: "[Previous administrations] tried that and it didn't work." Of course it did work, but what Obama said next is the acme of his obfuscation: "Just like we've tried their plan, we tried our plan -- and it worked. That's the difference. That's the choice in this election. That's why I'm running for a second term."
OK, well that BIG LIE will only work with Obama's most devoted lemmings, and he can only get so far with the other two pillars of his re-election campaign, tax "fairness" and class warfare.
So where is Obama to go for the five percent voter shift he needs to win in November?
Preying on the dead in Aurora, he has decided to target the Second Amendment, hoping he can muster sufficient emotional support from female voters, who have been trending toward the conservative side of the ballot since 2008.
After all, the most significant obstacle to Obama's ability to fully implement his socialist agenda is that pesky amendment codifying the inalienable right of American Patriots to defend Essential Liberty, since 1776.
Post Your Opinion
So Obama is gambling that Aurora will give him an opening to reverse course, and set a new heading toward disarming American gun owners. He set the tone for that heading, telling National Urban League convention attendees that, though he appreciates the tradition of hunting, "I believe that a lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals, that they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities."
"AK-47s"? That was an interesting choice of weapon, since those Russian and Chinese arms are carried "on the battle field of war" by Islamists killing American soldiers -- not that we would expect Obama to know the difference between an AK-47 and a Red Ryder BB gun. As for putting weapons "in the hands of criminals," see Obama's "Fast and Furious" initiative.
Obama insisted, "We should leave no stone unturned and recognize that we have no greater mission as a country than keeping our young people safe. Even as we debate government's role, we have to understand that when a child opens fire on another child, there's a hole in that child's heart that government alone can't fill."
Actually, the only "children" who are opening fire on other children, are 15-18 year old gang bangers, who, along with their 19-25 year old "brothers" account for most of the violence in the United States. And it is with great irony that Obama suggests "government alone can't fill" the void in their hearts, since generations of Leftist social policies have instituted the cultural degradation that creates those holes. But, as noted earlier, suggesting that gun control measures are all about "protecting the children" tugs at the emotional strings of female voters.
Obama's assault on the Second Amendment, like the rest of his socialist propaganda, must be countered with clear and concise rebuttal.
But the most distressing reaction to the tragedy in Aurora was from the third group of respondents -- Republicans -- who attempted to rebut Obama's politicization of the tragedy with data comparing the rate of murders with guns to negligent highway deaths cause by alcohol use or texting while driving, etc. It's not that such data isn't important when rebutting the Leftist's gun control agenda -- I've researched and provided great detail on comparative causes of death and other vectors for challenging the gun controllers. But that data is only tangential.
The real Second Amendment debate is not about guns, but is framed in the context of defending Essential Liberty as endowed by our Creator and enshrined in our Constitution's Bill of Rights.
Justice Joseph Story, appointed to the Supreme Court by our Constitution's principal author, James Madison, wrote in his "Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States" (1833), "The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of the republic; since it offers a strong moral check against usurpation and arbitrary power of the rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them."
By extension, that debate needs to come right back around to the question of whether Mitt Romney or Barack Hussein Obama will do a better job of defending Liberty against tyranny.
And the presidential question is not so much one of "gun policy" as it is of Supreme Court appointees. Specifically, the next president will likely make two or even three appointments to the Court. If Obama is re-elected, he'll likely flip the court to a solid 5-4 leftist majority supporting all manner of gun restrictions, in order to circumvent legislative obstacles. Indeed, Obama proudly claimed this week that, regardless of legislative action, "We've been able to take some actions on our own, recognizing that it's not always easy getting things through Congress these days." If given a liberal SCOTUS majority, that will open up a major thruway for Obama's agenda.
Fortunately, if Romney is elected, and if he's able to replace one or both of the High Court's two aging liberal justices (Ruth Bader Ginsberg is 79, and Stephen Breyer is 73), he'll be able to take the court to a 6-3 majority in support of the Second Amendment.
Yes, as governor of the Peoples' Republic of Massachusetts, Romney acquiesced to overwhelming Democrat state house majorities on a number of key issues, including a so-called "assault weapon" ban. Obama is banking on that acquiescence to undermine the credibility of any rebuttal from Romney to Obama's new gun control initiatives, which we expect to hear more about in the next week.
However, I believe a President Romney will prove to be a remarkable contrast to the former Governor Romney of a decade ago. After all, the most outstanding president in the last century, Ronald Reagan, was once a Democrat. (Not that I'm suggesting Romney will be another Reagan.)
Post Your Opinion
In 2005, against enormous political obstacles but as a lame duck governor, Romney cautiously revealed his support for the Second Amendment. That year he sponsored "The Right to Bear Arms Day" in Massachusetts. He became a Life Member of the NRA in 2006.
In an address to the NRA in 2007, he said, "I support the Second Amendment as one of the most basic and fundamental rights of every American." In remarks to the National Shooting Sports Foundation that year, Romney repeated this strong support, calling the Second Amendment "essential to our functioning as a free society, as are all the liberties enumerated in the Bill of Rights."
In 2008, Romney told The Washington Post, "With respect to gun control laws, I believe we need to distinguish between law abiding gun owners and criminals who use guns. Those who use a firearm during the commission of a crime must be punished severely. The key is to provide law enforcement with the resources they need and punish criminals, not burden lawful gun owners."
On the Aurora tragedy, Romney correctly shifted the debate from Obama's insistence that violence is a gun problem, to the fact that violence is a cultural problem -- institutionalized by the Left. "I don't believe that America needs new gun laws. [What the Aurora perpetrator] did was clearly against the law, but the fact that it was against the law did not prevent it from happening. We can sometimes hope that just changing a law will make all bad things go away. It won't. Changing the heart of the American people may well be what's essential to improve the lot of the American people."
To the issue of Supreme Court appointees, Romney said, "One of the most active fronts in the fight to preserve our Second Amendment rights today is being waged in the courts. ... I've made it clear that I'll appoint judges who believe in strictly interpreting the Constitution, judges in the mold of Roberts, Alito, Scalia and Thomas. It's simply wrong for judges to legislate from the bench. They should follow the law in the Constitution, not make new law. The right to bear arms is the cornerstone of our personal freedoms."
However, Romney missed the mark by concluding that the Second Amendment is "a constitutional guarantee passed down to us by the founders." Indeed, it was codified in our Constitution by our Founders, but it is passed down to us as a natural right "endowed by our Creator."
(Read Romney's address to the NRA, and if you have pesky relatives or neighbors who advocate for gun control, get them a few of these "Gun Free Household" stickers for their front and back doors.)

"[T]he right to freedom being the gift of God Almighty, it is not in the power of Man to alienate this gift, and voluntarily become a slave." --John Adams
The price of forfeiting Liberty
The primary consideration in the mass murder in Aurora, Colorado, last week is the issue of Essential Liberty, as Mark Alexander observed yesterday. The natural right "endowed by our Creator" to keep and bear arms is, as James Madison's Chief Justice, Joseph Story, put it, "the palladium of the liberties of the republic." So given that some are pushing to take away that right, here are a few of our observations.
If at least one concealed-carry permit holder had been allowed to carry a firearm into that theater, the killer could have been stopped. Unfortunately, it is unlawful to carry a concealed weapon in Aurora, though that can't preempt Colorado law, and the theater itself bans carried weapons, so the only one with a weapon that night was the perpetrator. Neither Aurora's gun restrictions nor Colorado's laws against murder stopped this incident, and taking more rights from the law-abiding won't stop the next crime, either.
We wonder if the Left ever pondered this: Why don't mass murders take place at gun shows or NRA conventions? Answer: The bad guys aren't dumb and look for so-called "gun-free zones" where they can kill at will. Suggesting that violence is a "gun problem" ignores the real issue -- the now-generational socio-pathology instituted by the Left.

Friday, July 27, 2012 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 102 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS Click here to listen now. Obama's Economy Stalling The government's first estimate today of economic growth in the second quarter came in at a depressing 1.5%. Welcome to the Obama "recovery." It looks just like a recession. Obama had the audacity this week to tell an audience that his policies have succeeded. But by every objective measurement, Obama has failed. Despite his massive stimulus bill, unemployment is higher today than when he took office. Gas prices are higher. The national debt is higher. Dependency is the only thing growing. Sixty percent of voters think the country is headed in the wrong direction. How does any of that represent success? Maybe Obama's own lack of success explains his resentment towards successful business owners! Obama's Failed Foreign Policy The front page of today's Washington Post features a chilling article about the growing threat Iran poses to the U.S. Navy. With the help of Russia and China, Iran has made major advances in developing its anti-ship missile technology. Military experts are concerned that Iran's new weapons and tactics "could strain the defensive capabilities of even the most modern U.S. ships." The loss of one aircraft carrier could claim thousands of lives. Meanwhile foreign policy analysts believe there is a 50-50 chance that Israel will be forced to deal with the Iranian nuclear threat before the elections, fearing that its window of opportunity is closing. Obama has had three and a half years to deal with Iran. But he came into office believing that the U.S. and Israel were the cause of Iranian hostility. Obama thought he could sweet talk the mullahs. So he sent letters to Ahmadinejad and videotaped messages promising to deal with the "Islamic Republic" based on "mutual respect." For days he said nothing as the regime slaughtered pro-democracy protestors in the streets. But while Obama has wasted time, Iran has been building up its military assets. Back in Washington, Obama's Secretary of Defense is warning of "catastrophic cuts" to the Pentagon's budget because Obama's economic policies have failed to grow the economy and reduce the deficit. Under this president, our national security is declining along with everything else. Where's Jerusalem? Jay Carney is not a household name, but those of us in Washington are familiar with the former Time Magazine reporter and Obama White House Press Secretary. Carney is a smart man. He graduated with honors from Yale. But yesterday Carney was asked repeatedly to identify the capital of Israel. Carney repeatedly refused to answer the question. Are we to assume that Mr. Carney didn't know the answer, that Yale doesn't teach geography anymore? No. Carney is just a left-winger working in a left-wing White House that sees Israel as the problem in the Middle East and is willing to sacrifice bits and pieces of it in order to satisfy the jihadists. They won't say Jerusalem is the capital of Israel because they want to give half of it to the Palestinians, who don't want half of it -- they want all of it. The capital of Israel is Jerusalem. And David's city, the Holy City, must remain the undivided capital of the Jewish state! "I'm A Dreamer!" Remember when Barack Obama announced his decision to impose the DREAM Act through executive fiat? He said that illegal immigrants who were brought here as children, who had graduated from U.S. high schools, earned a GED and were under the age of 30 would no longer be subject to deportation. We wondered how that order would be enforced. How was the government going to check the records of everyone who claimed to fall under the various conditions that Obama laid out? Now we know. They aren't! Here's what Chris Crane, president of the union representing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, told senators yesterday:
"Prosecutorial discretion for dreamers is solely based on the individual's claims. Our orders are if an alien says they went to high school, then let them go. Officers have been told that there is no burden for the alien to prove anything. ... We believe that significant numbers of people who are not dreamers are taking advantage of this practice to avoid arrest."
So if some illegal immigrant says, "I'm a dreamer," it's basically a "get out of jail free card" courtesy of Barack Obama. Since it is a blanket policy, and not just specific to Mexicans or Hispanics, even a jihadist who is in the country illegally, but has yet to commit any crimes, would also be released after claiming to be a dreamer, even if his dream is to murder thousands of Americans. Catholics And Evangelicals Defend Chick-fil-A The left's assault on Chick-fil-A continues to build. The mayor of San Francisco yesterday joined Chicago's Rahm Emanuel and Boston's Thomas Menino in denouncing Chick-fil-A. Truett Cathy and his sons built this fantastic company from a single restaurant into a $4 billion enterprise. They have founded foster homes, established scholarship programs and given away tens of millions of dollars, in addition to providing thousands of jobs. And because of the deep and abiding faith of its founders, the company is coming under assault from intolerant, left-wing, anti-religious bigots. Chick-fil-A has its defenders too. Deacon Keith Fournier, editor-in-chief of Catholic Online, has published a column entitled, "A Catholic Hooray for Chick-fil-A," praising the company for its commitment to marriage and biblical values. The Reverend Billy Graham, one of America's most respected religious leaders, also released a statement yesterday in support of Chick-fil-A and the Cathy family. Below are excerpts of Reverend Graham's statement:
"I want to express my support for my good friends Truett Cathy and his son Dan Cathy, and for their strong stand for the Christian faith. I've known their family for many years and have watched them grow Chick-fil-A into one of the best businesses in America while never compromising their values. ... "Each generation faces different issues and challenges, but our standard must always be measured by God's word. I appreciate the Cathy family's public support for God's definition of marriage. "I also appreciate Governor Mike Huckabee's leadership and for encouraging Americans to support Chick-fil-A on August 1. As the son of a dairy farmer who milked many a cow, I plan to 'Eat Mor Chikin' and show my support by visiting Chick-fil-A next Wednesday."
I'm proud to stand with Billy Graham, Mike Huckabee and leading pro-family organizations in supporting the Cathy family and the great employees of Chick-fil-A. Please make every effort to join us at your neighborhood Chick-fil-A restaurant Wednesday, August 1st.

"A College Reinvents Teacher Education"
By Daniel Coupland Associate Professor of Education Hillsdale College
"In 2007, Michigan's Department of Education changed its policy to require national accreditation for all teacher certification programs in the state. Hillsdale's program had been certified by the state for decades, but administrators concluded that it would be wasteful to dedicate precious resources to an accreditation process that lacked both value and credibility.
Instead of closing the school's Education Department, Hillsdale's administration recognized that teacher certification is not the same as teacher education. The college could still produce smart, dedicated teachers for America's classrooms, even if the students wouldn't have an immediate path to certification. Hillsdale decided to continue its program and invite schools unrestricted by the burden of certification requirements to hire its graduates."

As the Democrats are fond of saying, "A fish rots from the head down"

By Suzanne Eovaldi, staff writer
Perhaps nothing I've written about since starting with CIR quite has moved me, upset me, or disturbed me as much as the pitiful plight of 89 year old Warren Bodeker, the World War II veteran thrown out of his home. As I write this follow up story, his legal defense fund has reached $20,500 (as of June 26), a fund being offered by Oath Keepers who stress every dime collected goes straight to him.
When I called Democrat Senator Max Baucus' office, his spokeswoman told me while they've gotten many calls about this case, she wasn't sure they could do anything, because "It's not in our jurisdiction." Democrat Senator Jon Tester's office wanted to read my post but never answered me after I sent it. The 14th Amendment was adopted JULY 28, 1868, because southern States, though forced to end slavery by the 13th Amendment, did not grant citizenship to freed slaves. Southern Democrat Legislatures passed Black Codes and Jim Crow Laws, requiring freed slaves to be "apprenticed" to "employers" and punished any who left. Illinois Republican Congressman John Farnsworth said March 31, 1871: "The reason for the adoption [of the 14th Amendment]...was because of...discriminating...legislation of those States...by which they were punishing one class of men under different laws from another class." Republican John Bingham of Ohio, who introduced the 14th Amendment, said: "I repel the suggestion...that the Amendment will...take away from any State any right that belongs to it." Yet after the Amendment was ratified, activist Federal Judges, applying evolution to the legal process, did just that, as Thomas Jefferson had forewarned Charles Hammond in 1821: "The germ of dissolution of our...government ... "If this were just our candidates versus their candidates, I would sign an affidavit that we would pick up 35 seats" so says Congressman Steve Israel the Democrat in charge of getting the House back. This false bravado sums up a big part of the Democrats' problem: not being able to acknowledge there is a problem.
A hand wringing New York Times analysis lays out the grim situation for its Party, "The overall dynamic favors Republicans, who look poised to maintain their hold on the House. More Democrats than Republicans have retired in districts where they were endangered, and more Republicans benefited from the decennial redistricting, leaving the Democrats with too small a cushion of Teflon incumbents as they try to regain a majority in the House. Of the 80 races viewed as most competitive by The New York Times, based on polls and interviews with independent analysts, 32 are leaning Republican, ... For decades, apostles of one world government have endeavored to convince the American people that treaties, rather than the Constitution, embody the supreme law of the land. In 1952, Secretary of State and Council on Foreign Relations member John Foster Dulles told the American Bar Association that "Treaty law can override the Constitution." "Treaties for example...can cut across the rights given the people by their constitutional Bill of Rights." (1) But the Supreme Court has more than once decided against the propaganda of the new world order crowd. In the landmark case Reid v Covert, the Court ruled"...no agreement with a foreign nation can confer power on ... A more perfect vehicle could not have been invented in the fight for the "undecided" 20% of the people. The concerned American citizens involved, whether on the Left or Right, have made up their minds, based on the facts they choose to follow, concerning the seriousness of the situations this country faces. Too ignorant to use their own minds, or too selfish ... Franklin's public career began when organized Pennsylvania's first volunteer militia during threaten Spanish and French attacks, and proposed a General Fast, which was approved by the Colony's Council and printed in the Pennsylvania Gazette, December 12, 1747: "Forasmuch as it is the Duty of mankind, on all suitable occasions to acknowledge their dependence on the Divine Being, to give Thanks for the Mercies received, and no less to deprecate his Judgments and humbly pray for his Protection; And as the calamities of a bloody War, in which our Nation is now engaged, seem every Year more nearly to approach us, and the Expedition form'd for the security of these Plantation hath been laid aside, As the Inhabitants of this Province & City have been sorely ... The latest Democrat attack on Christian values comes in their calls to boycott Chick-fil-A a family owned restaurant chain run on Christian values. Chick-fil-A won't open on Sundays or kowtow to Democrat demands to recognize Gay "marriages" so the restaurant chain has become an enemy. The Democrat Party runs on hate. They hate and want to destroy anybody who will not act the way THEY demand them to. They have survived by keeping their base angry and hate filled so they will march zombie-like to the polls to keep Democrats in power. Democrats are a morally bankrupt and hate filled bunch that feels it must destroy anything and anything that is wholesome. "We hate people who don't hate what we hate, or love what we love" ... Could a Muslim judge in America get away with this?
|
He let a fellow Muslim off the hook for assaulting an anti-Islam protester, scolding the victim

"I'm a Muslim. I find it offensive," the judge said.
Now find out what the Judicial Conduct Board said about this judge's actions in the "zombie Muhammad" case.

What's it called when 200,000 Muslims convert to Christianity?
|
A miracle, of course. Meet the disciple-makers who are risking martyrdom - not for Allah, but for Jesus Christ - converting sheiks, imams, Muslim leaders and entire mosques by the Gospel and building churches in towns where Islam reigns. Why is church denomination cannibalizing its congregations?
|
Churches belonging to an evangelical Christian denomination are being broken into, their offices ransacked, financial records taken, their utilities cut off, their doors padlocked and their property sold out from under them.
Is it those radical Islamists persecuting Christians again? Perhaps North Korea's secret police? Homosexual activists venting their rage against supporters of biblical marriage? Overzealous government bureaucrats taking their notion of separation of church and state too far?
No. No. No. No.
It's the denomination's own leaders!
Now, one plundered Southern California congregation is resisting the best way it know how ...

Did U.S. Navy pray bin Laden into paradise?
|
Within 24 hours of being killed by U.S. Navy SEALS, al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden was reportedly given a Muslim burial at sea.
Existing U.S. Navy rules require the prayer for Muslim burials include the following: "O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, pardon him, grant him security, provide him a nice place and spacious lodgings, wash him (off from his sins) with water, snow and ice, purify him...make him enter paradise and save him from the trials of grave and the punishment of hell."
Did the U.S. military -- which has cracked down on chaplains praying in Jesus' name -- actually send this mass murder to his eternal reward with such soothing words?
We may be about to find out ...

Lawyers to anti-Chick-fil-A mayors: Make my day
|
Mayors around the country, who have been scoring points with their leftist political base by threatening to use the power of their office to punish Chick-fil-A restaurants for the religious beliefs followed by the company's chief, may soon have to decide if they want to play a game of chicken ... legal chicken.
Attorneys sympathetic to the Christian-owned company have a bone to pick ... and they say the plucking will be easy.

The turnout has been overwhelming - check out the amazing pictures and video from a helicopter flyover that shows a small army of buses.
