New Republican governors rapidly bringing down unemployment in their states
Voters in 17 states elected new Republican governors in November 2010. This new breed of fiscally-conservative, tea party-supported Republican governors took office in January 2011. Here is how those states have fared since then, in terms of their unemployment rates:

Political spending by unions far exceeds direct donations
The Wall Street Journal | Published July 10, 2012
WASHINGTON - Organized labor spends about four times as much on politics and lobbying as generally thought, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis, a finding that shines a light on an aspect of labor's political activity that has often been overlooked. Previous estimates have focused on labor unions' filings with federal election officials, which chronicle contributions made directly to federal candidates and union spending in support of candidates for Congress and the White House. But unions spend far more money on a wider range of political activities, including supporting state and local candidates and deploying what has long been seen as the unions' most potent political weapon: persuading members to vote as unions want them to. The new figures come from a little-known set of annual reports to the Labor Department in which local unions, their national parents and labor federations have been required to detail their spending on politics and lobbying since 2005.

Activate: How to turn the 2012 election from a close call to a mandate
Last night, Glenn focused on the importance of commitment. He was the first to admit, a lot of last night's show was something you had heard before - but it's important to start at the beginning and to make sure you know what you believe before you get put into action. And tonight, Glenn revealed ways for you to really get moving!
Tonight, the focus of the show was "Activate" - and it was all about the election and how you can make sure that one way or another - 2012 is a year for a mandate for or against the progressives. And if you think it doesn't matter just take a look at what is happening right now in Wisconsin. Progressives and unions are doing everything they can to make sure that Walker loses. It's a microcosm to what is happening around the country, and Glenn thought it was so important that he recapped it on tonight's show (in under three minutes!):

Ask yourself this question everyday: "What did I do today to boot Obama and his corrupt liberal cronies out of Washington?"
Hello Tea Partiers,
A fire has been lit under conservative grassroots! Any wavering over whether or not to support Romney flew out the window last Thursday when Roberts failed the American people. Know this; it is up to us to turn this socialism around and with the help of Divine Providence we will succeed! Our mission is clear. Get out the Romney vote and once elected hold his feet to the fire!!
The last few days have been extremely busy. Lots of ideas coming at us. The following one we can do immediately. It came from TPP National and is called Operation Light the Fire Now more than ever after last week's Supreme Court ruling on Obamacare, we must hold our representatives and wanabee representatives accountable. It is up to us to defend our own liberty. Click on the link Operation: Light the Fire
Next Central Montco PTPP meeting is Thursday July 12th, 7:00 at the Rock Cafe. Topic - Tea Party Patriot strategy to take back our Country
Citizens for Constitutional Government meeting is July 10 at the Quakertown Library. The proposed agenda is as follows:
6:30 Open discussion
6:50 "Constitutional Literacy" (Michael Farris) 20 minute video
7:15-8:20 SAM ROHRER - Q&A discussion
8:20-8:30 Wrap-up: Action Points
Sam Rohrer will address questions many conservatives have been asking themselves: how can a principled conservative stay actively involved in the political process when so much of politics seems to be about compromise, connections, power, money, and downright corruption? Is there any hope to effect real change in the GOP? in Harrisburg? in D.C.? Do we just need to "throw them all out" as so many frustrated Tea Party folks exclaim?

CCG July 10th Meeting - SAM ROHRER speaks on Conservative activism in an unprincipled political world
Dear Patriots,
Please save the date for the second Tuesday in July, July 10, when Sam Rohrer will address questions many conservatives have been asking themselves: how can a principled conservative stay actively involved in the political process when so much of politics seems to be about compromise, connections, power, money, and downright corruption? Is there any hope to effect real change in the GOP? in Harrisburg? in D.C.? Do we just need to "throw them all out" as so many frustrated Tea Party folks exclaim?
Most importantly, why should and how can principled conservatives get involved in this 2012 election when the only candidates close to our position who have a prayer of winning are a Romney, a Smith, and Congressmen like Fitzpatrick or Dent - each of whom has compromised conservative principles in some areas of practice or policy? From the perspective of a man of proven conservative principles who battled these issues for 14 years from inside the Capitol in Harrisburg, a discussion of this challenging dilemma should prove interesting and enlightening.
Please bring your thoughts and questions, invite your conservative friends who are ready to "throw in the towel" and give up the fight - and join us a week from Tuesday at the Quakertown Library. The proposed agenda is as follows:
SAM ROHRER speaking on Conservative Activism in an unprincipled political world -
- how do patriots of principle stay involved in a political world driven by compromise, connections, power, money, and downright corruption?
- is compromise ever the principled choice for a conservative legislator?
- when is the lesser of two evils the principled choice?
- where do conservatives draw the line on what candidates they will actively support?
PLEASE RSVP to this event NOW !!!
Tuesday, JULY 10, 6:30-8:30pm
Quakertown Library, 401 W. Mill St., Quakertown
Bring your thoughts and questions for a Q&A Discussion following Sam's presentation
Note: To allow more discussion time on this vital topic, we will cancel our usual half-hour open discussion time and postpone our "Constitutional Literacy" video series. Our meeting will start at 6:30 promptly with some legislative updates and CCG business, followed by our speaker.
PLEASE PASS ON THIS INVITATION. For liberty, Jaime

Hey, everyone,
We went to this new tea party group for YOUNG people in Conshohocken the other night and it was filled with energy! Lots of young people were there and they are psyched to stop the train wreck of socialism. If YOU are angry and feel helpless and want to do something about it in addition to praying, please get connected with this group (below) on Facebook! They are networked across the entire country with all the other tea party groups, "912 groups," and other freedom-loving people--many who have grandparents who fought and died in World War II and other battles. There are many more younger tea party groups springing up as it dawns on teens and 20-somethings that THEY will be the ones living under mandates . . . endless new mandates. We haven't even discussed the fact that we do NOT have the money to pay for ObamaCare!!!
These young people GET IT--it is them that will suffer under socialism, under the crushing debt, under devastating unemployment, and under a horrible NO-WORK ethic creeping across our country. Socialism will kill the spirit of our citizens. This group is committed to making a huge difference, right here in Montgomery County.
Also, we met Perry Bentley, the 22-year old Field Director for the MontCo Victory Center to UNELECT OBAMA. Perry said that on July 7 there is a kickoff for anyone who is interested to help in lots of ways to get rid of Obama: phone calls, door knocking, and much more. Call 717 686-2219 to sign up and help get rid of Obama. To do nothing at this point is to allow tyranny, plain and simple. The time for watching t.v. is OVER. Your future children and grandchildren will ask you: what did you do to stop tyranny?
Michele
P.S. On the Communist Party USA website today, there was an article that said: "America will accept socialism peacefully without violence." Will that be you or will you FIGHT it???

By allowing our attention to be focused exclusively on the danger and prevention of terrorism, we ignore the many other ways we are being attacked. Specifically, we are missing what our Islamist enemies call their 'civilization jihad' - a form of warfare that employs manipulative financial techniques, lawfare, infiltration of our civil institutions and government and insidious information dominance. Together, these have the effect of exploiting our liberties and governing structures against us, so that our leaders wind up imposing the very anti-American values that our enemies promote.
Welcome to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within - a 10-part, web-based video briefing that is designed to explain why and how this is happening.
It addresses a threat most Americans are unaware even exists within our country, let alone the degree of peril it represents. The threat is the totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine its adherents call "shariah" and the organized, disciplined and increasingly successful efforts by such adherents-- most especially the Muslim Brotherhood-- to bring it here.
We are making this course available in the hope of encouraging, informing and broadening support for national efforts to defeat the insinuation into this country of shariah's anti-constitutional and seditious program.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization
Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.
The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

The U.S. Constitution
A Reader
Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.

About Hillsdale College
Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."
Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs. Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012. |

From July 16 through July 18, 2012, Christians United for Israel will be holding its 7th Annual Washington Summit. We're going back to stand with Israel in our nation's capital. This year - more than ever - we need you to join us!
In the coming months, critical decisions are going to be made about Iran, Israel and the world. Finally, Washington is beginning to focus on the issue of a nuclear Iran. Many of our leaders want to confront this looming threat. But others want to keep kicking the can down the road. The debate is far from over.
- We know that when thousands of CUFI activists arrive in DC and on Capitol Hill, we can change the conversation.
- We can remind our leaders that a nuclear Iran is not only a threat to Israel, but to the US as well. And we can demonstrate to our elected officials that their constituents care enough about this issue to show up at their DC offices.
- We know that we can create a sense of immediacy that's otherwise lacking.
- We know that the more of us who show up and speak out -- the louder our voice and the greater our impact.
We stand at a critical juncture in history. Don't be silent! Don't miss your chance to make a difference! Don't pass up your opportunity to defend America and bless Israel!
Our leaders need to remember that we are watching them and we need to remember that God is watching us.
The time to speak out for Israel is now! Please register today for CUFI's 2012 DC Summit.

Tonight, Sunday June 3rd, CUFI Founder and Chairman, Pastor John Hagee, will be announcing an exciting new CUFI initiative. You can click here to watch it live at 7:30 PM Eastern (6:30 PM Central, 5:30 PM Mountain, 4:30 PM Pacific). This link will not be live until 7:30 PM Eastern (6:30 PM Central, 5:30 PM Mountain, 4:30 PM Pacific) tonight.
Tonight, Pastor Hagee will be announcing the creation of the Israel Defense Fund. This emergency fund will enable CUFI to meet the major challenges we anticipate in the coming months.
CUFI has accomplished great things for Israel. But the times in which we live demand that we do even more -- and do so now!
We need to do more to defend Israel in the public square and in the media. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to purchase more pro-Israel billboards across America as well as full-page newspaper ads as circumstances demand.
We need to do more to defend Israel on our college campuses. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to train even more students and hold even more pro-Israel events on campuses across the country.
We need to do more to defend Israel before our leaders. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to be more active than ever in educating our nation's leaders about the justice of Israel's cause.
Even if you can't watch the broadcast, don't miss out on the opportunity to be part of the Israel Defense Fund! Click here now to contribute.
We will not be silent. Together, we will do more than ever to stand up and speak up for Israel.
May God Bless You and Those that You Love, David Brog Executive Director CUFI

The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:
- Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
- Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
- Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care
The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

Transportation Secretary Wants Us to Be Like Communist China
China's attempt at a high-speed rail network is fraught with corrupt officials, impossible costs, and deadly safety failures. But U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood wishes America would follow it as a model. LaHood told The Cable last week:
The Chinese are more successful [in building infrastructure] because in their country, only three people make the decision. In our country, 3,000 people do, 3 million. In a country where only three people make the decision, they can decide where to put their rail line, get the money, and do it. We don't do it that way in America.
His comments are stunning. Yes, that's how Communists do it: A few people make decisions for the country and control the money, land, resources, and workers. And how has that worked out? "Rather than demonstrating the advantages of centrally planned long-term investment, as its foreign admirers sometimes suggested, China's bullet-train experience shows what can go wrong when an unelected elite, influenced by corrupt opportunists, gives orders that all must follow - without the robust public discussion we would have in the states." That sounds like a direct rebuttal to LaHood, but Washington Post editorial writer Charles Lane wrote that back in April 2011. The Telegraph (U.K.) reported in February that 70 percent of China's railway projects had been suspended, as its railways ministry attempted to continue deficit financing while facing slow ticket sales. Last year, a deadly train crash brought safety concerns and corruption at the highest levels of the railway to light. The bottom line is that high-speed rail is like pouring money down a hole. China's official institutions aren't known for transparency, but according to the Voice of America, "Even the [Chinese] national research institution, the Academy of Science, reported last year that at current investment and estimated passenger numbers, the trains will never collect enough in fares to repay construction loans." LaHood-and President Obama-advocate high-speed rail in America by evoking the image of thousands of workers on the project. It's part of their stimulus-funded plan to get America back to work. But once again, China's experience demonstrates that government spending on infrastructure has not helped the Chinese economy. The Obama Administration has an ally in California Governor Jerry Brown (D), however. On Friday, Democrats in the California state Senate narrowly approved funding for the first stage of a high-speed rail line there. They faced a deadline for getting $3.3 billion in federal stimulus money, which drove the timing of the vote. The state is now authorized to start selling $4.5 billion in bonds. The key is that this first stage is barely a beginning, as CBS Sacramento columnist Aaron McLear explained:
The plan sold to voters cost $46 billion; now the state says it will cost $68 billion, hoping that the federal government and private investors make up the bulk of the cost. But as the non-partisan research group California Common Sense pointed out this week, when one factors in typical large infrastructure project overruns, the cost is closer to $99 billion, with $82 billion of that funding unsecured. If the Feds don't pick up half the tab the cost soars to $203 billion.
That's a pretty big "if"-"if" the funding comes in. One Democratic state senator who voted against the project exposed this reasoning: "Is there additional commitment of federal funds? There is not. Is there additional commitment of private funding? There is not. Is there a dedicated funding source that we can look to in the coming years? There is not." Basically, California lawmakers are just hoping it works out. And they're ready to tax Californians-and the rest of America-to make that happen. Californians are wise to their situation, and they're not too keen on diverting endless amounts of money into this hole. Polls show public support for the rail plan has dropped below 40 percent. Despite public opinion, LaHood declares that the opposite is true, like a character out of Orwell: "There's no turning back on this. We're not going to turn back. And you know why? Because that's what the people want. That's why... there's no stopping high speed rail." But as the suspension of Chinese railway projects shows, there is stopping it when bullet trains collide with fiscal reality. The states of Florida, Wisconsin, and Ohio actually turned down federal money for similar projects, declining to tie their state budgets to the money pit of high-speed rail. They realize that their taxpayers would be on the hook subsidizing the rail line long after the initial infusion of federal cash. We need less centralized control of transportation, not more. Congress should give states more control over the transportation dollars their drivers already pay in federal gas taxes. States can identify their transportation problems and priorities much better than Washington. Secretary LaHood could not be more wrong.

You can make corncob pipes, eighteen wheel trucks or microprocessors-- but you can't make jobs. Jobs are not a commodity or a service. They cannot be created independently through a job creating program. Rather they are the side-effect of a working economy. Trying to shortcut the economy with job creation programs is like trying to run a fruit orchard by neglecting the trees and instead buying fruit at inflated prices to resell to your customers at a lower price. It's feasible, but not sustainable. The government can promote job creation through subsidized education and training, but there is a ceiling on such efforts, since government programs still have to be paid for through taxation. It can encourage companies to do business locally through tax breaks, though this is an admission that the tax rates are an obstacle to job growth. But what it cannot do is create jobs out of whole cloth. Except for government jobs. Just about anyone in the White House this term would have launched job creation programs. And like most such efforts they would have been a wash. But Barack Hussein Obama's approach was different in that he did not even pretend to make the effort. His economic programs went by business friendly names, but invariably turned out to be concerned with only one kind of job creation. The creation of public sector jobs. The spoils system has a long history in American politics, but it was never as spoiled as all this. There is no parallel in American history for the spoils system being used not just to rotate out supporters of the old administration and replace them with your lackeys, but to hijack the economy as your own spoils system to the tune of trillions of dollars. Obama responded to an economic crisis by working to create two kinds of jobs. Government and union jobs. This was not about anything as simple as rewarding his supporters. The Black community got very little in exchange for supporting him. The Hispanic community similarly ended up with some token appointments, but not much to show for it. This was about shifting jobs from the private sector into the public sector and its feeders. To manufacture the types of jobs that feed money back into the Democratic party and expand the scope of the government bureaucracy. No previous administration has as thoroughly disdained and tried to crush the private sector. But then none of them were nearly as clueless or irresponsible when it come to basic economics. The Democrats who had spent eight years mocking Reaganomics, practiced a Krugmanonics that treated money like an imaginary number. In Krugmanomics wealth is created through spending, and poverty is created by practicing wise fiscal management. The whole premise of Krugmanomics makes no sense, unless you have already decided that the private sector is a mythical beast with no room in the socialist bestiary.

Victory Center" on Facebook
-Gabriel Malor
Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on. RedState Morning Briefing
For July 10, 2012
1. David Limbaugh Will Be At the RedState Gathering. Will You?
David Limbaugh, author of the awesome new book The Great Destroyer is going to be at the RedState Gathering.
You are running out of time to register for the event. And you are absolutely running out of time to get a discount on your hotel room.
The event will be August 2nd through August 5th at the Omni Hotel in Jacksonville, FL.
Go to www.redstategathering.com right now to register. You only have a week or so left to be able to.
David Limbaugh, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, Florida Governor Rick Scott, and more will be there. I hope to see you there.
2. . . . When?
Yesterday I asked if not now, when do we get to hold Republicans accountable.
It is mind numbingly infuriating to get some of the bellyaching from people that, in effect, we never can.
I disagree. I know most of you do too. Right now, here are six congress critters we can annihilate in Republican primaries. The alternative candidates to them are far more conservative.
If you really do care about taking the country back and improving the GOP, you have no excuse. You must oppose these incumbents currently fighting it out in Republican Primaries.
3. The Next Epic Battle: Scott Keadle Vs Richard Hudson in NC-8
With the Wisconsin recall behind us and the Texas Senate race scheduled for the end of the month, we must remember that there is an important battle taking place in North Carolina next Tuesday.
Conservative Scott Keadle - who has been endorsed by Red State, the Club for Growth, Citizens United, and the Madison Project - will be facing off against establishment-hack Richard Hudson in a runoff-election to face faux blue dog Democrat Larry Kissell in North Carolina District 8. This is a conservative district and is ripe for picking this November; however, we must pick off the seat with the right Republican.
4. Newsflash - Texas State Senators "Decide" to Support Dewhurst over Cruz
For a guy who says he will go to Washington as a "conservative" and fight against the establishment, it sure is curious to see Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst lining up the Texas establishment to defend him in his race for U.S. Senate against the actual conservative, Ted Cruz.
Dewhurst has the support of very few people outside of Austin. Think about it. His most powerful endorsement is that of Rick Perry - which while sad, is understandable given that Perry has worked with him for 10 years. Who else? Well, a whole helluva lot of Austin lobbyists - who know full well that if Dewhurst loses, they have to deal with him as the head of the Texas Senate to get bills passed.
And now - holy cow, out of the blue - we have 18 of the 19 Senators in the Texas Senate coming out in defense of Lt. Governor (and therefore, Presiding officer of the Senate) Dewhurst...
Wonders never cease. What's even more wondrous about the letter is that the state senators did not even write the letter. According to the metadata of the PDF'ed letter, Michael Grimes, an Austin lobbyist wrote the letter. How very Charlie Crist of David Dewhurst.

Campaign against aid for Africa-which has the opposite effect of the one intended.
Between 1970 and 1998 when well-meaning foreign aid was at its peak, the poverty rate in Africa rose from 11 percent to 66 percent. Why? Because foreign aid ended up in the hands of corrupt dictators-who are estimated to steal around $10 billion (about half Africa's foreign aid receipts) every year. Argue that what Africans need is "shock therapy," not liberal NGO workers swanning round the country in Land Cruisers. Free trade, property rights, and open markets will do far more than cash handouts. Say you got all this from a book called Dead Aid by a black African Harvard masters graduate, Dambisa Moyo.

83 percent of doctors have considered quitting over Obamacare
Published: 2:20 PM 07/09/2012
Eighty-three percent of American physicians have considered leaving their practices over President Barack Obama's health care reform law, according to a survey released by the Doctor Patient Medical Association.
The DPMA, a non-partisan association of doctors and patients, surveyed a random selection of 699 doctors nationwide. The survey found that the majority have thought about bailing out of their careers over the legislation, which was upheld last month by the Supreme Court.
Even if doctors do not quit their jobs over the ruling, America will face a shortage of at least 90,000 doctors by 2020. The new health care law increases demand for physicians by expanding insurance coverage. This change will exacerbate the current shortage as more Americans live past 65.
By 2025 the shortage will balloon to over 130,000, Len Marquez, the director of government relations at the American Association of Medical Colleges, told The Daily Caller.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2012 ACT! FOR AMERICA NATIONAL CONFERENCE, AND A HISTORIC DAY ON CAPITOL HILL
ACT! for America Chapter Leaders and members gathered in Washington, DC, from June 27-29 to learn, network, and demonstrate our strength up on Capitol Hill as part of the ACT! for America 2012 National Conference and Legislative Briefing. If you didn't have the opportunity to join us this year, we hope the following highlights will show you what you missed, and inspire you to attend next year! If you were with us this year, we hope this e-mail will remind you of why your participation was so important. ACT! for America is growing and it's an exciting and critical time to be active in the fight to preserve our country and our democratic freedoms. Day One: Wednesday, June 27, 2012 - Welcome! Conference attendees arrived in Washington, DC, and gathered at the beautiful and historic Omni Shoreham Hotel to kick off the conference. Our first event was a "meet and greet" dessert reception, where conference attendees could form new relationships and grow existing ones with other activists who are fighting against radical Islam. It's all about knowing that we are all in this together. After a heartfelt "Welcome" from our President and founder, Brigitte Gabriel, ACT! for America Chapter Leaders from all across the nation-the engine of the ACT! for America machine-were officially recognized. Afterward, our attendees learned about "Legal Jihad" through an informative and riveting presentation by Richard Thompson of the Thomas More Law Center. Day Two: Thursday, June 28, 2012 - ACT! for America Goes Up to the Hill Our conference attendees awoke bright and early for a full day up on Capitol Hill. There was electricity in the air that day, not only because of ACT! for America's presence in the Halls of Congress, but because of the Supreme Court's ruling on the President's health care legislation, as well as Attorney General Eric Holder's "contempt of Congress" vote by the full House of Representatives-which some of our conference attendees were able to watch live in the House chamber!
Our day began with a private 2-hour National Security Legislative Briefing in the beautiful Cannon Caucus Room, where our conference attendees heard about a variety of notational security-related issues by a record number of Members of Congress including:
|
|
Immediately after the briefing by these legislators, our group moved to the Capitol Hill Club for our annual Legislative Awards Luncheon, where we honored those Members of Congress who fight the hardest to protect us from radical Islam. While enjoying a lovely lunch, our conference attendees heard from Members of Congress/award recipients such as:
|
|
Immediately following the Awards Luncheon, some of our members visited with their Members of Congress and then headed back to the hotel for some well-deserved rest before the evening activities began! After a viewing of the inspirational and heart-wrenching movie, "Losing Our Sons," attendees headed to the final event of the day, an informational briefing by Executive Director, Guy Rodgers and Director of Government Relations, Lisa Piraneo, on the presidential campaigns and the most hotly-contested congressional races. Day Three: Friday, June 29, 2012 - General Sessions and Dinner Gala Our third and final day of the conference included several general sessions on a wide range of topics, delivered by national security experts and former high-level government officials such as:
- Author and Congressional candidate, Kenneth Timmerman, who spoke about the Iranian threat to America.
- Former CIA operative Clare Lopez, who educated about the Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America.
- ACT! for America Executive Director, Guy Rodgers, and author, Deborah Weiss who discussed UN Resolution 16/18 and the Assault on Freedom of Speech
- Egyptian former Islamic extremist and current reformer, Dr. Tawfik Hamid, who informed attendees about life "Inside Jihad."
- President Ronald Reagan's National Security Director, the Honorable Robert McFarlane, who talked about the Electric Grid, Oil's Monopoly and OPEC's Cartel.
- ACT! for America's National Field Director, Kelly Cook, and Director of Government Relations, Lisa Piraneo, who updated attendees about a variety of state-wide and federal initiatives on which ACT! for America is currently working.
|
The day culminated with our annual Gala Dinner at the Omni Shoreham ballroom, at which we honored Houston Chapter Leaders, Steve Wilson and Susan Watts, as our Chapter Leaders of the Year; Kansas Chapter Leader, Lisa Ritchie, as the Citizen Legislator of the Year in honor of her perseverance in fighting to win passage of Kansas American Laws for American Courts legislation; and Kansas State Representative Peggy Mast with the National Security Eagle Award, for leading the successful charge as the sponsor of the Kansas American Laws for American Courts legislation. While enjoying a delicious dinner, all attendees solidified newfound friendships, caught up one last time with old friends, and celebrated everything we have accomplished TOGETHER as a part of the growing ACT! for America wave of resistance. During her Keynote address entitled, "The Power of One," President and founder, Brigitte Gabriel reminded everyone of just how powerful one ACT! for America member can be when joined by the 235,000 others members. And we have only just begun!

With Today's Tax Flip-Flop Obama Moves Left of Pelosi, Hits 900K Small Bizs
by John Nolte
With the economy threatening to fall into another recession and job growth plummeting, Obama came before the American people today demanding taxes be raised on those making over $250,000 a year, including what he admitted would include 3% of small businesses. Even if that 3% is correct, which is disputed, that 3% means a tax increase on 900,000 small businesses.
That's nearly a million small business owners who will now be even more crippled and have less capital available to expand their payrolls -- which of course means fewer jobs for the middle class and the poor who would like to someday enter the middle class.

Obama's 'missing year' at Columbia found?
WORLDNETDAILY - Two separate database reports from the National Student Clearinghouse have contradicted President Obama's claim he attended Columbia University for two years. Policymakers say that the Farm Bill is about helping farms, but this just isn't true.
In reality, the Farm Bill is a big welfare bill in disguise. The "Farm Bill" label merely allows the ever-growing spending on welfare programs to cause the price tag for the entire package to swell, contributing to our nation's budget woes.
Before we can improve U.S. farm policy, we first need to recognize that the Farm Bill is a giant welfare bill, and it needs serious change.
Contact your Representatives today and tell them to "Trim the Fat!" in the Bloated Farm Bill.
It's hard to believe, but the numbers show that a whopping eighty percent of Farm Bill spending goes toward food stamp and nutrition programs. The rest is welfare of a different kind: corporate welfare. The bill includes pork-like programs that do more to support special interests than small farmers, since the benefits go toward the biggest and best-connected farms that know how to navigate the Washington maze.
Every five years Congress must vote to reauthorize these USDA programs or watch them expire, meaning that the so-called Farm Bill is an opportunity to make serious reforms and real cuts to the billions we waste on farm subsidies and food stamps.
The Senate already rammed the Farm Bill through, and they failed to make meaningful cuts. The House of Representatives is expected to take up the issue this week, and they need to hear from you that you oppose spending hundreds of billions of dollars on even more food and farm welfare.
Here are 3 links from AFP that describe our position on the Farm Bill:

Monday, July 9, 2012 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 120 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS Click here to listen now. Change For The Worse Barack Obama was swept into office riding a wave of hope and change. But nearly four years later, Americans are losing hope and they don't like the change. A poll for the Washington, D.C., publication The Hill finds that 68 percent of likely voters believe that Obama "has substantially transformed the country." The bad news for Obama is that 56% believe he "has transformed the nation in a negative way," while just 35% believe Obama's change has been positive. We think the poll is right. Just look at the headlines. Obama has spent his first four years raising taxes, growing the government, dividing the country by class and race, trying to redefine marriage, and spending trillions of dollars we don't have. But The Hill poll is good news in terms of the opportunity to end the Obama nightmare. If 56% of likely voters understand that Obama's change has been bad for America, that's very fertile ground for Mitt Romney and Republican congressional candidates. Romney can win and should win. We think he will win if he does the following things:
- Clearly expose Obama's failures. Obama's $830 billion stimulus bill failed. The economy is stalling. The unemployment rate during the Bush administration averaged 5.26%. It will likely average above 9% for Obama's first term.
- Don't worry about polls that say people still like Obama. They are probably not accurate as folks may be afraid to tell pollsters that they personally dislike the first black president. But The Hill poll results are strikingly clear. Even 20% of Democrats said Obama's change has been bad for America.
- Overcome the impulse to begin every critical sentence with phrases like, "Obama's a really nice guy" or "He's a decent man, but..." If this is hard to do, take an hour and watch the interviews of Obama's campaign spokesmen on yesterday's Sunday talk shows. They begin every sentence with the equivalent of "Mitt Romney is the devil." On CNN's "State of the Union" yesterday Robert Gibbs strongly suggested that Mitt Romney is a tax cheat. He demanded that Romney release more tax records and said that "nobody knows" whether Mitt Romney has done anything illegal.
In Iowa, and in every state of the union, many 2008 Obama voters feel they have been betrayed by Obama's promises of hope and change. If someone has betrayed you, they're not a "nice guy." The Romney campaign needs to swing at Obama and his Democrat allies as hard as they swing at us. - Governor Romney should pick a solid conservative, pro-life, pro-family running mate. There is a long list of good people to choose from. Doing so will energize conservatives and boost enthusiasm among the base, which will be necessary to win.
- Don't run the campaign as if all you have to do is avoid making a mistake. To do so would be a mistake! Run your campaign as if you're 20 points down and time is running out. As any football fan can tell you, the prevent defense seldom works in football. And as every losing candidate can tell you, it rarely works in politics.
- Here's a final point of advice: Sit down with Ann and imagine the worst possible thing that Obama will try to do to you before the election is over. No matter how outlandish, whatever you come up with, triple it! Because that is what they will try to do.
By the end of the campaign, Obama needs the average American to say to himself, "Well, Obama has failed, but that Romney guy is weird. He's made millions sending jobs overseas. He wants to start a dozen wars, give money away to his rich friends, starve children and dogs, and push grandma off a cliff."
Obama Changes The Subject Stung by yet another month of bad employment data, Barack Obama today tried desperately to change the subject. He is once again embracing the Bush tax cuts. Sort of. House Republicans are scheduled to hold votes in the coming days on repealing the ObamaCare tax and extending all of the Bush tax cuts in order to relieve some of the uncertainty that is weighing on the economy. Obama tried to blur those bright distinctions by saying he would support a one-year extension of the Bush tax cuts, but only for those making $250,000 or less. And what happens in 2014? Presumably, under Obama's proposal, everyone else -- even those making less than $250,000 a year -- gets a massive tax hike in 2014. How does letting Big Government take a bigger bite out of your hard-earned paycheck help to create a single new job in the private sector? It doesn't! Moreover, as a matter of economic policy, Obama's "soak the rich" position is virtually meaningless. The New York Times reports that economists estimate raising taxes on those making $250,000 and more would raise about $85 billion a year. Last year's federal deficit was $1,300 billion. Just another $1,215 billion to go. The problem in Washington is not a lack of revenue. It is too much spending. There are not enough rich people to pay for all of Obama's spending. Eventually, if given the opportunity, he will raise your taxes, too. America can't afford four more years of Barack Obama! GOP Policies Are Putting People To Work Here's an interesting fact: The unemployment rates in the 17 states that elected Republican governors in 2010 have fallen nearly 50% faster than the national unemployment rate and 50% faster than the eight states that elected Democrat governors. You can read more here. A Quiet Victory For Life June 28th, the day the U.S. Supreme Court upheld key parts of ObamaCare, was a bad day for pro-life advocates, and for the First Amendment. But the day before the much-heralded ObamaCare decision, another court case was decided that has important implications for the First Amendment and the pro-life cause. July 11th: The Day the House Repeals Obamacare
|
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives will vote on repealing Obamacare.
We at Heritage Action often speak about critical votes . . . but this is a big one. There is no room for complacency. We conservatives must use this vote to send a clear message that Americans still overwhelmingly favor repealing this abominable law.
When the Supreme Court chose to uphold Obamacare, the nation made a lurch away from free enterprise and away from the principles of limited government on which our nation was founded.
The American people must send a strong message to Congress: repeal it now!
In 2011, 245 Representatives voted for repeal. This time, we must do better.
245 votes should be the minimum number of votes for repeal this time around. We plan to hold lawmakers accountable so that:
1. Every representative who voted for repeal in 2011 votes for it again;
2. Representatives who voted against repeal feel pressure from their districts to switch their votes and support the will the American people; and
3. The scale of the majority forces the Senate to finally act and repeal Obamacare once and for all.
Now is not the time for so-called "moderates" to stand with Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama in favor of bigger government . . . higher taxes . . . and socialized medicine.
We must push for immediate repeal. Find out how you can help today.
We cannot wait to fight for repeal until we have a Republican president. Not only is the election outcome far from guaranteed, but we cannot afford to lose momentum in the fight.
Heritage Action will keep the momentum going for repeal by making key lawmakers feel the force of tens of thousands of activist voices standing firm against Obamacare.
But the fight doesn't end in the House this week. It will continue in the Senate, where we are working directly with members to draft a strategy for repeal. Harry Reid has relentlessly obstructed even a simple up-or-down vote on repeal. If Harry Reid won't allow a vote, we will work with conservatives in the Senate to force a vote as soon as is feasible.
Learn more about the three ways Heritage Action is giving the repeal vote a final boost so we can be rid of Obamacare once and for all.
The finish line is in sight. We can't let conservatives in Congress lose focus.
America took a dangerous turn with the Supreme Court's ruling. Take action today to make sure Obamacare does not stand.
Thank you for all you do.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Needham Chief Executive Officer Heritage Action for America

Taxmageddon -- It's Time to Act
The Foundation
"An unlimited power to tax involves, necessarily, a power to destroy; because there is a limit beyond which no institution and no property can bear taxation." --John Marshall
Government

"[Friday's] jobs report is a broken record, with the unemployment rate stuck at 8.2 percent. The Department of Labor reports that only 80,000 jobs were added in June -- consistent with other data revealing the economy has downshifted from slow to slower. ... In 2009, the President promised that his 'recovery plan' composed almost entirely of government spending was the only way to stave off rising unemployment. The White House even drafted a chart showing projected unemployment with the economic stimulus plan and without it -- to scare lawmakers into voting for it. According to their projections, by now, unemployment should be at 5.5 percent. ... [E]mployers aren't hiring because they are suffering from prolonged uncertainty, as economists readily admit. ... That uncertainty ... stems primarily from America's date with Taxmageddon on January 1, 2013. The largest tax increase in U.S. history -- $494 billion in one year -- will hit on that day, as a host of tax cuts expire and new tax hikes (including some of Obamacare's new taxes) take effect. Taxmageddon falls primarily on middle- and low-income Americans. Heritage research shows that families will see an average tax increase of $4,138. Visit the new Taxmageddon page to see the impact of these tax hikes on individuals. ... The President should be leading the country in the opposite direction -- giving employers and individuals the assurance that these tax hikes will be prevented. Instead, in his 2013 budget submission, the President called for $2 trillion in tax increases, and he has showed no signs of saving Americans from Taxmageddon. ... The longer Congress waits to prevent Taxmageddon, the more uncertainty there will be for workers and businesses. This is an element of the economy that is actually in the complete control of American policymakers. They should act quickly to increase certainty and stability at a time when the economy greatly needs it." --Heritage Foundation's Amy Payne
For the Record
"At the federal level the [Obamacare] mandate was adjudged to have been an Unconstitutional expansion of the Commerce Clause on the part of the Congress, but fell within the Congress' taxing powers. So, at the federal level the mandate is a tax. But, in states -- of which the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is one -- there is no such thing as a 'Commerce Clause' because states have no power to impose trade restrictions on one another. Thus there can be no Unconstitutional expansion of Massachusetts' Commerce Clause because it doesn't exist. So, at the state level the mandate can be a penalty. ... For a man or woman trying to decide whether to expand their small business and add a few employees in suburban Omaha, or rural Ohio, whether the mandate is a tax or a penalty is of absolutely no moment. How much Obamacare will cost them -- something they're probably still trying to determine -- is all that matters. An engineering shop in Omaha and a small manufacturer in Ohio will not alter the unemployment figures. But 10,000 small businesses deciding to hire two or three people will. And they're not going to do it because in small towns not hiring someone you're not certain you can keep on the payroll is far less painful than having to lay someone off after a few months." --columnist Rich Galen
Opinion in Brief
"Betrayal is hard to take, whether in our personal lives or in the political life of the nation. Yet there are people in Washington -- too often, Republicans -- who start living in the Beltway atmosphere, and start forgetting those hundreds of millions of Americans beyond the Beltway who trusted them to do right by them, to use their wisdom instead of their cleverness. ... The Chief Justice probably made as good a case as could be made for upholding the constitutionality of ObamaCare by defining one of its key features as a 'tax.' The legislation didn't call it a tax and Chief Justice Roberts admitted that this might not be the most 'natural' reading of the law. But he fell back on the long-standing principle of judicial interpretation that the courts should not declare a law unconstitutional if it can be reasonably read in a way that would make it constitutional, out of 'deference' to the legislative branch of government. But this question, like so many questions in life, is a matter of degree. How far do you bend over backwards to avoid the obvious, that ObamaCare was an unprecedented extension of federal power over the lives of 300 million Americans today and of generations yet unborn? ... There are many speculations as to why Chief Justice Roberts did what he did.... But all of that is ultimately irrelevant. What he did was betray his oath to be faithful to the Constitution of the United States." --economist Thomas Sowell
Essential Liberty
"Justice Roberts apparently forgot that his first duty is not to protect the 'image' of the court but to protect the Constitution, of which the court is the primary steward. Whether or not he intended to, Justice Roberts breathed new life, for now, into the Great Destroyer, making November that much more important. If the tea party was taking a brief nap -- as some have suggested (but I don't believe) -- the federal government has awoken it with an ear-piercing alarm that will not quit ringing before Election Day. ... [L]et's truly reflect on America's Constitution and its liberty and redouble our resolve and commitment to recapturing both." --columnist David Limbaugh
The Gipper
"The Founding Fathers established a system which meant a radical break from that which preceded it. A written constitution would provide a permanent form of government, limited in scope, but effective in providing both liberty and order. Government was not to be a matter of self-appointed rulers, governing by whim or harsh ideology. It was not to be government by the strongest or for the few. Our principles were revolutionary." --Ronald Reagan
Insight
"Whenever the power that is put in any hands for the government of the people, and the protection of our properties, is applied to other ends, and made use of to impoverish, harass or subdue them to the arbitrary and irregular commands of those that have it; there it presently becomes tyranny, whether those that thus use it are one or many." --English philosopher and physician John Locke (1632-1704)
Re: The Left
"Given how many more Americans define themselves as conservative rather than as liberal, let alone than as left, how does one explain the success of left-wing policies? One answer is the appeal of entitlements and a desire to be taken care of. It takes a strong-willed citizen to vote against receiving free benefits. But an even greater explanation is the saturation of Western society by left-wing hate directed at the right. The left's demonization, personal vilification, and mockery of its opponents have been the most powerful tools in the left-wing arsenal for a century. Since Stalin labeled Leon Trotsky -- the man who was the father of Russian Bolshevism! -- a 'fascist,' the Left has labeled its ideological opponents evil. And when you control nearly all of the news media and schools, that labeling works. The liberal media even succeeded in blaming the right wing for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy even though his assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was a pro-Soviet, pro-Castro communist. Similarly, just one day after a deranged man, Jared Loughner, attempted to kill Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and murdered six people in the process, The New York Times columnist Paul Krugman wrote that it was right-wing hate that had provoked Loughner.... Krugman made it all up. But what matters to most of those who speak for the left is not truth. It is destroying the good name of its opponents. That is the modus operandi of the left. It works." --radio talk-show host Dennis Prager
Political Futures
"With Barack Obama at the helm, and David Axelrod charting the course against Mitt Romney, this nation is about to set sail into a poisonous sea of class envy and hatred. 'Bain' Capital will be 'Bane' Capital, as in evil. 'Venture capital' will be 'vulture capital.' This November's election might boil down to a fundamental debate between the merits of markets vs. central planning and wealth redistribution; at the least, that's where the rhetoric is taking us. If I were advising Mitt Romney, I'd tell him to bone up not only on the good he did at Bain Capital ... but on Hayek, Friedman, Hazlitt, Mises, Laffer, and, most of all, Marx. He might Google the word 'agitprop,' since he will be precisely such a target. And if Romney does this right, he has [the] chance not only to win Americans' vote but to educate them about the wondrous free-market system that has made their nation the greatest marvel in human history -- and which they won't learn about from Obama and Axelrod." --columnist Paul Kengor
Faith and Family
"The abstinent minority has now become the majority. Over the last two decades, teens have become more likely to remain sexually abstinent. According to the 2011 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 53 percent of high school students have remained abstinent, an increase of 15 percent, and two in three are currently abstinent. ... Largely misrepresented, SRA [Sexual Risk Avoidance] education is more than just about saying 'no.' Abstinence-centered and holistic, the SRA strategy offers skill-building topics such as goal setting and future orientation, healthy decision making, building assets, avoiding negative peer pressure, and human development. ... Despite the research and parental and teen support for SRA approaches, the Obama Administration has nearly eliminated all federal funding of SRA education; instead, it has created additional programs for contraceptive-centered education, according to the NAEA [National Abstinence Education Association] report, while nearly eliminating support for risk avoidance. ... When it comes to sex education, the debate is ostensibly fought on the grounds of empirical evidence, but it is ultimately one of values." --Heritage Foundation's Christine Kim
Culture
"[D]oes anyone doubt that there's something about the legal regime in this country that's creating a headwind against basic human decency? And I'm not just talking about trial lawyers and the politicians who love them. Last year, in Alameda, Calif., a man walked into the chilly -- but not exactly freezing -- waters of the Bay Area to commit suicide. It was a slow affair. The police and firefighters got there in plenty of time. But, due to union-backed rules, they simply declined to save the man's life. They just stood on the beach and watched. Fire Chief Ricci Zombeck was asked what he would have done if it were a child, rather than a suicidal adult, slowly drowning out there. He responded that if he were on duty he'd have let the kid drown, but if he was off duty he would have saved him. These are the symptoms of a sick culture." --columnist Jonah Goldberg

Editor's Note: We are grateful and amazed to report that The Patriot Post's 2012 Independence Day Campaign goal has been met -- grateful because the battle to sustain Liberty must be maintained on all fronts, and amazed because we operate under the same tight financial constraints as most of our Patriot supporters. Once again you have provided the fuel to keep the flame of Liberty burning bright! Thank you from your entire Patriot Team!
Here are a few representative comments received on the last day of our Independence Day Campaign: "As enlisted military, I just made my first donation in reaction to the complaints you received from several folks suggesting you 'need to cut back like all the rest of us.' I actually know two of the Patriot Team members personally, and know well that this outstanding group is by any standard both underpaid and overworked -- but they roll with it every day without complaint. ... I am one of those of limited means who has supported The Patriot Post several times every year. I look forward to your message of Liberty every day and share it with our Texas Patriots forum! ... The Patriot Post is my 'go to' source for unabashedly patriotic and constitutionally framed commentary and analysis. I also purchase and distribute large quantities of your Essential Liberty pocket guides! ... We are proud of you, Patriots. We love your message and the wisdom God is giving to fulfill His 'call' on you in support of Liberty. Keep up the great work. We are all in this together. ... Patriots, I have wanted to support your valued efforts but I am a completely disabled Gulf War veteran and am barely getting by. Thanks for all the words of encouragement you provide me and many other active and retired military vets! ... I am a veteran who has proudly served in the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, and various other posts throughout the world. I made a donation for the first time today because I have reaped the benefits of your fine publication for several years now. In the past I was unable to fit a donation into my budget; now I can fit one in although modest. Thank you Patriots! ... As a World War II Veteran, I stand firm upon Freedom and the Constitutional Rule of Law. I may be old, but still willing to give my life for God and our Country. God bless you as you continue your work at The Patriot Post. ... I am both military retired and now serve in the mission field. Regrettably, my small donation does not begin to reflect my gratitude for The Patriot Post. But I appreciate what you do and share your words of wisdom far and wide! ... Not only do I share The Patriot Post's message in many forums, but my truck proudly wears your stickers. You guys are truly the BEST and God Bless! ... I'm on fixed income (military retirement) and I know you have begged us military folks not to donate, but I just a $40 check leaving a balance of less than one dollar. Don't worry, my next retirement deposit will replenish the account. The work you Patriots do is priceless."
"Patriots, as you are asking me to support your Team, may I ask how much salary does Mr. Alexander draw? Why don't you publish your mangers' salaries?" --Roger in California
Editor's Reply: The fact is, Mr. Alexander does not draw a salary from The Patriot Post. He operates several small businesses including our parent company, and uses the proceeds from those enterprises to, as he would say, "support my Patriot habit." As was the case with our Founders, and many of today's Patriots, Alexander's devotion to Liberty does not come with financial compensation. As for why we do not publish our team salaries, that's because Mr. Alexander respects our privacy! Though The Patriot Post is a donor-supported publication (in order to remain free of charge for students, military personnel and those in the mission field or with limited income), we are not a "501-c-3" tax exempt organization because the IRS would then dictate the limits of our content. Thus, Mr. Alexander is not required to make public reports of our salaries and wages. However, there is not a member of our Team who is here for the wages -- we are here to support Liberty and live with modest wages in return for that privilege! (Note, Mr. Alexander also operates Patriot Foundation Trust, which is a 501c-3 tax exempt organization with the primary mission of promoting Liberty through education programs and providing resources to raise up the next generation of Patriot leaders. For more information about supporting Patriot Foundation Trust through a charitable fund, estate planning or annual giving, please visit the PFT Web site.
The Last Word
"Good news: The Waldo Canyon fire, which forced 32,000 residents (including our family) to flee, claimed two lives and destroyed 347 homes, is now 100 percent contained. Bad news: Radical environmentalists won't stop blowing hot air about this year's infernal season across the West. Al Gore slithered out of the political morgue to bemoan nationwide heat records and pimp his new 'Climate Reality Project,' which blames global warming for the wildfire outbreak. NBC meteorologist Doug Kammerer asserted: 'If we did not have global warming, we wouldn't see this.' Agriculture Department Undersecretary Harris Sherman, who oversees the Forest Service, claimed to the Washington Post: 'The climate is changing, and these fires are a very strong indicator of that.' And the Associated Press (or rather, the Activist Press) lit the fear-mongering torch with an eco-propaganda piece titled 'U.S. summer is what "global warming will look like."' ... Radical green efforts to block logging and timber sales in national forests since the 1990s are the real culprits. Wildlife mitigation experts point to incompetent forest management and militant opposition to thinning the timber fuel supply. Another symptom of green obstructionism: widespread bark beetle infestations. ... Local, state and federal officials offered effusive praise for my fellow Colorado Springs residents who engaged in preventive mitigation efforts in their neighborhoods. The government flacks said it made a life-and-death difference. Yet, litigious environmental groups have sabotaged such mitigation efforts at the national level -- in effect, creating an explosive tinderbox out of the West. Stoking global warming alarms may make for titillating headlines and posh Al Gore confabs. But it's a human blame avoidance strategy rooted in ideological extremism and flaming idiocy." --columnist Michelle Malkin

Publishing Schedule
"If men of wisdom and knowledge, of moderation and temperance, of patience, fortitude and perseverance, of sobriety and true republican simplicity of manners, of zeal for the honour of the Supreme Being and the welfare of the commonwealth; if men possessed of these other excellent qualities are chosen to fill the seats of government, we may expect that our affairs will rest on a solid and permanent foundation." --Samuel Adams (1780)
Publisher's Note:
Independence Day fell midweek this year, which is when most of our editorial assignments are distributed for the week. This has been a particularly demanding year for your Patriot Team and, thus, I made the decision to give our staff and volunteer support personnel a much needed day off on Wednesday. That means the editing schedule for today's Digest was interrupted, but we will return to our regular publishing schedule Monday.
However, the boss did not take Wednesday off -- so if you missed it, read "The Imperial Executive."
We also invite you to visit our Patriot Headline Report for news and opinion that matters most.
Our editorial team evaluates hundreds of reputable news sources each day for key headlines that are relevant to Liberty. We post links to these headlines 24 hours a day on our Patriot Headline Report -- and we list these links in easy-to-scan topical categories, which we believe is a more useful arrangement than can be found on any other headline aggregator page.
We also invite you to help us produce the Heartland News section of the Report, where we identify important local media news that may not make the national syndicates. Please use our Heartland Suggest a Headline link next to the Heartland section to suggest news tips.
Of course, the Patriot Headline Report is both free of charge and free of advertising clutter, so it's always clean and easy to navigate. Our new Patriot site offers much more than our unique daily editions and archives -- it also has one of the most extensive Historic Documents pages on the Internet, and many other resources.
In addition to the day's top news, our editorial team evaluates and selects the nationally syndicated columnists whose essays represent the best conservative opinion on the Web. If you're looking for the Right commentary, you can find it every day at The Right Opinion.
Finally, fellow Patriots, you are our best promoters. The most effective method for reaching an ever-larger number of Americans with our weekly news and policy analysis is for you to introduce others to the messenger. Please share The Patriot Post with your family, friends and colleagues, and encourage them to subscribe. In this way, you can help us spread the flame of Liberty far and wide.
Thank you, Patriot, for all you do to support Liberty. The battle to sustain Liberty requires all of us doing our own part on the frontlines against rising tyranny, and we are proud to hold that line with you!

Obamacare RIP: John Roberts Cannot Save You
This column by ACRU General Counsel and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy (CCPP) Peter Ferrara was published July 5, 2012 on Forbes.com. Progressives are desperate to prevent the country from learning that free market conservatives have long been proposing policies to assure essential health care for all, and achieve all the other goals of Obamacare, at just a small fraction of the costs. That involves a health care safety net ensuring that no one would suffer from lack of essential health care, with no individual mandate and no employer mandate, achieving that goal far more effectively than Obamacare. And it involves market incentives and competition to control costs far more effectively than, indeed contrary to, Obamacare. The best exposition of those policies can be found in the latest book by John Goodman, Priceless: Curing the Health Care Crisis, just published by the Independent Institute. Goodman is the Godfather of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), and President of the National Center for Policy Analysis in Dallas.

The Great Dissent Part I: Four Justices in Obamacare Make Case for Constitutional Conservatism
This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published July 5, 2012 on Breitbart.com.
One week after the Supreme Court handed down its most consequential decision in decades (if not more than a century--upholding almost all of Obamacare in NFIB v. Sebelius--constitutional lawyers are just beginning to wrap their heads around the Court's 193-page opinion. This column is the first in a series that will unpack some of the most consequential aspects of that decision, mostly quoting relevant parts of the decision that will have lasting consequences for the country. The dissent in NFIB v. Sebelius, written jointly by Justices Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito, is one of the finest judicial opinions I've ever read, if not the single finest. That this opinion was only one vote shy of being a majority opinion that would bind the government and the nation going forward is a tragedy of Shakespearean magnitude. We came within a single vote of winning it all.

The Great Dissent Part II: Four Justices Explain Why Congress' Power to Regulate Commerce Does Not Save Obamacare
This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published July 6, 2012 on Breitbart.com. As I explained after the Obamacare decision came down, it is one of the most unfortunate decisions ever handed down by our highest court. This tragedy is only compounded by the fact that the main dissent in the decision was spectacular. One of the greatest aspects of the dissent was its ringing affirmation of the doctrine of enumerated powers--the cornerstone of our constitutional system, that a central protection of our liberties is that the federal government only has those specific powers granted it by the Constitution. The second part of this series teaches that cardinal feature of the Supreme Law of the Land by quoting these passages from the justices who joined together in dissent discussing the Commerce Clause of the Constitution, coupled with the Necessary and Proper Clause, both invoked by President Obama as together authorizing Obamacare's infamous individual mandate.

Why Mayberry Still Resonates: 'The Andy Griffith Show' Plays Out Timeless Truths
This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published June 29, 2012 on The Washington Times website.
"Americans loved, and still love, the notion of the small town as a manageable, non-threatening, friendly, finite community. ... The black-and-white world that Andy Griffith shaped so masterfully is there for our perusal from a distance, but it is not coming back - either on television or anywhere else." - Ted Anthony, Associated Press
In an elegant obituary for Andy Griffith, who died on July 3 at age 86, Ted Anthony might be right about the survival of small communities, but perhaps not about what made "The Andy Griffith Show" so successful.
The most important part of the program, of which CBS ran 249 episodes (159 in black and white and 90 in color) from 1960 to 1968, was not the idealized portrayal of small-town American life. It is the Christian-inspired warmth and wisdom, which never goes out of style. Most Americans don't live in semirural villages anymore, and the communications age has ended isolation, but "The Andy Griffith Show" transcends its venue.

Rodent Axelrod gnaws at the very hand that protects his disabled daughter: Socialists have no shame
Jul 09, 2012 06:13 am | Coach Collins
By Kevin "Coach" Collins
The story of David Axelrod's daughter Lauren is heartwarming. It is the story of how the love and caring of a child's parents can triumph over terrible physical and mental disabilities. From her infancy Lauren had epileptic attacks that numbered as many as 25 a day in her teens. There seemed to be no hope of Lauren's ever recovering from the ravaging disease that eventually caused irreversible brain damage that left her developmentally disabled.
In 2000 a doctor told the Axelrods a new anti-convulsant drug called Keppra might help end Lauren's seizures. The new drug worked well enough to end the attacks in just a few days. The seizures behind her, Lauren would still need total 24 hour attention because she was unable to care for herself even for brief periods.
The stress of this ordeal must have been enormous on the entire family especially her parents. What would ... Continue Reading:Rodent Axelrod gnaws at the very hand that protects his disabled daughter: Socialists have no shame

American Minute July 8

By Bill Federer, staff writer
The Liberty Bell got its name from being rung JULY 8, 1776, to call the citizens of Philadelphia together to hear the Declaration of Independence read out loud for the first time. Made in England in 1752, this massive bell, weighing over 2000 pounds, was rung on each anniversary, until JULY 8, 1835, when it cracked tolling at the funeral of the famous Supreme Court Justice John Marshall. Inscribed on the Liberty Bell is a verse from the Old Testament Book of Leviticus, chapter 25, verse 10: "Proclaim Liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." At the 150th anniversary of the Declaration, 1926, President Calvin Coolidge stated: "People at home and abroad consider Independence Hall as hallowed ground and revere the Liberty Bell as a sacred relic. That pile of bricks and mortar, that mass of metal, might appear as only the outgrown meeting place and the shattered bell...but to those ... Continue Reading:American Minute July 8

Have we no patriots in DC? Are all of our Representatives cowards?
Jul 08, 2012 01:13 pm | Coach Collins
By Ron Reale, staff writer
I do not understand the mindset of a United States Congressman or Senator, of either Party, who would so publicly and readily not only abdicate their responsibility to follow the Constitution, but sit back and without a fight or so much as a show of false indignation, allow another branch of Government to usurp their powers and render them meaningless.
Out of 535 so-called representatives, the people that are supposed to hold up our founding documents to protect the citizenry they represent, not one of them had the stones, was enough of a Patriot, to stand up and proclaim that, "not having received any decision from the Supreme Court on the law the Congress sent them, no action would be taken on the bill until the next Court session, when the court will have a chance to further deliberate on the Bill, possibly rendering a decision. In the meantime, if any Representatives in ... Continue Reading:Have we no patriots in DC? Are all of our Representatives cowards?

Still a dead heat

(Paul Mirengoff)
Two new polls show just how tight the presidential race remains. Rasmussen, in a poll released today, has the race at Romney 46 - Obama 45. Rasmussen puts the president's approval rating in negative territory: 47-52.
Meanwhile, Gallup, in a poll released yesterday, has Obama leading Romney by 47-45. The president's approval rating is break-even: 46-46.
These polls follow ad blizes by Team Obama. If they succeeded in moving the needle at all, they didn't move it much.
Barring unexpected economic news or some sort of major crisis, I don't expect either side to move the needle much until the Republican convention when, I hope, Americans will come to see Mitt Romney in a better light than that projected by the Democrats and their friends in the mainstream media.

Why government bestowal of economic privileges is pathological
Posted: 09 Jul 2012 07:16 AM PDT
(Paul Mirengoff)
Matt Mitchell, a senior research fellow at George Mason University's Mercatus Center, has written an important paper called "The Pathology of Privilege: The Economic Consequences of Government Favoritism." We have discussed such favoritism, which also goes by the names "crony capitalism" and "corporatism," from time to time. But Mitchell's paper provides an economic analysis and unified theory of the phenomenon.
What are the privileges that governments bestow on particular firms or industries? Bailouts, such as the financial bailouts of 2008, are obvious examples. But such privileges have also included monopoly status, favorable regulations, subsidies, loan guarantees, targeted tax breaks, protection from foreign competition, and noncompetitive contracts.
By bestowing such privileges, the government diminishes the gains that accrue from exchanges. At the heart of modern economic theory lies the fact that in a market where no firm enjoys favoritism, free and voluntary trade results in gains for both sellers and buyers. As individuals expand the number of people with whom they exchange, they are able to consume a wider diversity of products while becoming more specialized in production. Specialized production, in turn, permits greater productive efficiency and allows us to do more with less.
But government-granted privileges diminish the gains from exchange. They do so because a firm receiving government-granted privileges gains pricing power that a competitive firm lacks. Thus, it need not accept the price that would emerge in a competitive market. Instead, it is free to set a higher price.
This means that the privileged firm gains more from exchange than it would if it were a competitive firm and consumers gain less than they would were the market subject to free competition. In addition, would-be competitors who are not blessed with monopoly privilege lose out on the opportunity to gain from exchange.
Moreover, total sales under monopoly are less than total sales under competition because the higher price drives some customers out of the market. On balance, the monopolist's gains are less than the losses of consumers and would-be producers, which means that society as a whole is worse off under monopoly than under competition.
This is not the only evil associated with monopoly. Among the others are: productive inefficiencies; inattention to consumer desires; rent-seeking (whereby firms spend time and money to influence the government, with no benefit to consumers); loss of innovation and therefore long-term economic growth; macroeconomic instability caused by the excessive risks firms take when they believe they will be bailed out; the diminished legitimacy of both business and government; and diminished social trust.
For these reasons, says Mitchell, government-granted privileges are pathological:
Privileges limit the prospects for mutually beneficial exchange-the very essence of economic progress. They raise prices, lower quality, and discourage innovation. They pad the pockets of the wealthy and well-connected at the expense of the poor and unknown. When governments dispense privileges, smart, hardworking, and creative people are encouraged to spend their time devising new ways to obtain favors instead of new ways to create value for customers. Privileges depress long-run economic growth and threaten short-run macroeconomic stability. They even undermine cultural mores, fostering cronyism, blurring the distinction between productive and unproductive.
Tim Carney has more on Mitchell's paper and Arthur Brooks has more on the subject.

Why do we live in America Lite?
Posted: 09 Jul 2012 05:27 AM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
David Gelernter is a Renaissance man. He is professor of computer science at Yale University and the author of books that suggest a kind of Herodotean interest in everything human. Last year's Wall Street Journal profile of Professor Gelernter by Holman Jenkins is still available online and still worth reading.
Professor Gelernter's books include Drawing Life: Surviving the Unabomber, Mirror Worlds, The Muse in the Machine: Computerizing the Poetry of Human Thought, Machine Beauty: Elegance and the Heart of Technology, 1939: The Lost World of the Fair, Americanism: The Fourth Great Western Reliion, and Judaism: A Way of Being.
Professor Gelernter is the author, most recently, of America-Lite: How Imperial Academia Dismantled Our Culture (and Ushered in the Obamacrats), just published by Encounter Books. He recently joined Lou Dobbs on the Fox Business Channel to talk about the book. The video of his appearance is accessible here; I think it is fair to say that Dobbs loved the book.
I asked Professor Gelernter if he would write something that would allow us to bring his new book to the attention of our readers. He has graciously forwarded us the following note:
How did it happen? We know how many of our public schools teach no serious American history or civics, that our toniest colleges preach left-liberalism, that 40% of American babies are illegitimate and the rate keeps rising, that too many thriving young Americans worship money and casual hedonism and are too ignorant of religion even to be proper atheists, that President Obama rejects outright the heart of America's Creed: American uniqueness, the American Zion, the city on a hill striving to be a beacon to mankind. How did this happen? When did we decide to swap America for America Lite? We can't undo these changes unless we know how they came about.
Our disastrous Cultural Revolution (its effects are still unfolding) was an unintended consequence of a beautiful impulse.
After the Second World War, our snootiest and most powerful colleges opened their gates to non-WASPs. Within a generation, they had been overrun by intellectuals-who, in general, make no secret of their disdain for America and the west. Meanwhile the power of these same colleges, and their alumni, and their law and business and journalism and education schools, continued to grow. By turning over Yale and Harvard et al. to the intellectuals, we gave them a sledgehammer, which they have used just as they always said they would-to smash American culture. Let's hope that non-left Americans get to work replacing America's irremediably corrupt schools and colleges before it's too late. The Internet is no panacea, but it is a way forward.
We hope to have Professor Gelernter back in a week or two to expand on one of the themes of the book. In the meantime, to purchase a copy, order it here.

Obama then and now, cont'd
Posted: 09 Jul 2012 04:36 AM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
I wrote yesterday that Barack Obama had proved rather spectacularly to be a false messiah.
What manner of man is this? He is America's own Sabbatai Sevi. It's a painfully obvious observation, but it should not be forgotten how Obama held himself out in 2008 as our lord and savior.
Now comes Sheldon Alberts to report these illuminating poll results in The Hill:
Two-thirds of likely voters say President Obama has kept his 2008 campaign promise to change America - but it's changed for the worse, according to a sizable majority.
A new poll for The Hill found 56 percent of likely voters believe Obama's first term has transformed the nation in a negative way, compared to 35 percent who believe the country has changed for the better under his leadership.
The results signal broad voter unease with the direction the nation has taken under Obama's leadership and present a major challenge for the incumbent Democrat as he seeks reelection this fall.
Conducted for The Hill by Pulse Opinion Research, the poll comes in the wake of last month's Supreme Court decision that upheld the primary elements of Obama's signature healthcare legislation.
It found 68 percent of likely voters - regardless of whether they approve or disapprove of Obama - believe the president has substantially transformed the country since his 2009 inauguration.
The feeling that Obama has changed the country for the worse is strongest among Republicans, at 91 percent, compared to 71 percent of Democrats who support Obama's brand of change.
Strikingly, 1-in-5 Democrats say they feel Obama has changed the United States for the worse.
For a man with Obama's grandiose self-conception, these poll results must be something like "the most unkindest cut of all."

This day in baseball history
Posted: 08 Jul 2012 09:36 PM PDT
(Paul Mirengoff)
On Sunday, July 8, 1962, the Cleveland Indians lost both games of a double-header to the Chicago White Sox. This ended a six game winning streak and dropped the Indians to second place in the American League heading into the All Star break.
Still, Indians fans had little to complain about. The previous year, the Indians had finished in fifth place, 30.5 games behind the Yankees and five games under .500. Now, they stood at 47-36, 11 games over .500, and just one game behind the first place Yankees.
Even so, some Indians fans may have entered the second half of the season with trepidation. For at the 1961 All Star break, Cleveland's record had been almost as good: 47-39. After the break, the Tribe had slumped to 31-44.
Sure enough, the Indians opened the second half of the 1962 season with a win at Baltimore, but then lost their next nine games. By July 21, they were in fourth place, 8.5 games behind the surging Yankees, and only three games over .500.
Nor did the Indians right their ship when they finally ended the mid-July losing streak. They would finish the season in sixth place with a record of 80-82.
For Cleveland, then, the 1961 and 1962 seasons were nearly identical in this respect: In both years a fine first half, followed by a miserable second half, equaled a slightly below .500 finish.
Why did the Indians suffer two seasons of nearly identical second half swoons in a row? Serious injuries don't seem to have been an issue, nor did Cleveland make dramatic in-season trades in either year. The occurrence of parallel swoons appears to be random.
It's interesting, though, to reflect on how Cleveland tried to shore up its team following the 1961 collapse. In essence, they traded fielding defense and hitting for starting pitching. Specifically, they acquired 1961 AL ERA leader Dick Donovan (along with catcher/outfielder Gene Green) for centerfielder Jimmy Piersall, and they obtained pitcher Pedro Ramos for first baseman Vic Power (along with pitcher Dick Stigman, who had seen limited action in 1961). Power was the Gold Glove winner at his position from 1958-1964. Piersall won the Gold Glove in 1958 and 1961. One wonders how pitchers like Jim Perry, Gary Bell, Jim "Mudcat" Grant, and Barry Latman felt about losing Power and Piersall.
Unfortunately, the Indians were unable to improve their pitching in 1962 - the team ERA remained nearly the same (4.14 in '62, 4.15 in '61). Donavan had a strong year and Ramos did okay, but the ERAs of Bell, Grant, and Latman all went up (Perry's went down).
To make matters worse, the 1962 team scored 45 fewer runs than their 1961 counterparts. Thus, they were lucky to finish with a fractionally better record and, having given up 63 more runs than they scored, they were lucky to finish only two games below .500 in 1962.
Perhaps the most remarkable statistic from the Indians 1962 season is this: before the All Star break they outscored opponents by 393-355. After the break, they were outscored 289-390. This was a far more dramatic meltdown than had occurred in 1961. And again, I can't identify any serious injuries that would help explain it. Manager Mel McGaha sent essentially the same players out game after game, even as the team's run production was declining by about one-fourth.
The odds against this great of a disparity in runs between two halves of the same season must be high, and the odds of an offensive meltdown of this magnitude (from 393 runs to 289) in the absence of a major injury or personnel change, presumably are much higher.
UPDATE: I have corrected the numbers in the final two paragraphs regarding the Indians second half run production in 1962.

Why does Home Depot support this kind of activity?
July 9, 2012
On Sunday, June 10, Home Depot participated in the 2012 Philadelphia Pride Festival.
Home Depot signed on as a "festival" vendor, conducting Kid's Craft Workshops for children in the midst of lewd activities, including nudity and homosexual activities.
Home Depot doesn't see a problem associating itself with the celebration of depravity. But to operate a booth for the purpose of attracting children is unconscionable. The photos at right show the children's booth, although adults obscured our camera's view of the children.
AFA and Americans For Truth were there to document exactly what kind of event Home Depot supported with corporate dollars. You can see the full report here, but be warned. The content is graphic and contains offensive material.
Home Depot knows that transvestites, cross-dressers, and the promotion of gay sex are mainstays at these events. This is where Home Depot set up a children's booth!
TAKE ACTION
1. If you have not done so, sign the Boycott Pledge at BoycottTheHomeDepot.com. 2. Call your local store manager. Let the manager know that you will not be shopping at The Home Depot until the company stops supporting the homosexual agenda. You can find the phone number here. (click "Store Finder"). 3. Print the paper petition and distribute it at Sunday School and church.

This Graph Says an Awful Lot About the So-Called 'Recovery'
The Blaze | by Becket Adams | Posted on July 9, 2012 at 10:29pm
Lately, we've heard a lot about "the recovery" and lot of arguing over who's to blame for its supposed slowdown. But before we got too bogged down in who's responsible for retarding economic growth, maybe we should first look at the data.
Without one word of explanation, Harvard University econ professor Greg Mankiw posted the following graph to his blog:
Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics
As you can see, the shaded area indicates the recession and everything to the right of that is the so-called "recovery."
Huh.
So, was this what the White House meant when it said we're moving in the right direction or should we just not read too much into the data?
