Hillary tied to Egypt's new Muslim Brotherhood president: Sordid links run through Anthony Weiner's terror-tied mother-in-law.

Saleha Mahmood Abedin, the mother of Hillary Clinton's chief of staff, reportedly served in the women's division of the Muslim Brotherhood alongside the wife of Egypt's new president, the Brotherhood's Mohammed Mursi.
WND previously exposed how Abedin represented a Muslim charity known to have spawned terror groups, including one declared by the U.S. government to be an official al-Qaida front.
WND also reported how Clinton spoke at Abedin's Saudi women's college, where she was introduced by Abedin alongside the Islamic activist's daughter, Huma, who serves as Clinton's chief of staff. At the speech, Clinton praised Saleha's "pioneering work."
Huma Abedin is also the mother-in-law of disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y.
Now author Walid Shoebat reported that while she acted as one of 63 leaders of the Muslim Sisterhood, the de facto female version of the Muslim Brotherhood, Saleha Abedin served alongside Najla Ali Mahmoud, the wife of Mursi. Both were members of the Sisterhood's Guidance Bureau, found Shoebat.
Saleha Mahmood Abedin is an associate professor of sociology at Dar Al-Hekma College in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which she helped to create. She formerly directed the Institute of Muslim Minority Affairs in the U.K. and served as a delegate for the Muslim World League, an Islamic fundamentalist group Osama bin Laden reportedly told an associate was one of his most important charity fronts.

Civil disobedience is the act of breaking the law and defying the authorities to do anything about it. So is tyranny. The difference between the two lies in which side of the power equation the breaker is on. When the law is broken, two things happen. Either the law is upheld or the authorities back away from a confrontation and find some way to save face. The ObamaCare process involved breaking a long list of rules and laws and then defying the ragged remnants of the system to do anything about it. At every turn the United States was unable to stop a rogue chief executive and his ruling party from trampling the law. When the case finally reached the Supreme Court, the leading judicial body in the land sidestepped a confrontation by redefining what the action was, rather than rule on the law. It was a classic case of the authorities saving face. Civil disobedience balances moral absolutes against legal principles. The Supreme Court exists to serve as the final bastion of the law against runaway moral absolutes. But, just as in its showdown with FDR, the Court blinked, and our court, unlike that court, didn't even at least put up a good fight for the law before backing down. Obama didn't even have to threaten to pack the court with justices. All he had to do was make it clear that he wasn't going to follow the law, which forced the law to save face by following him instead. The American chief executive has a great deal of power and a chief executive who dons imperial robes is a danger with few precedents. There have been conflicts between the branches, but even FDR made a pretense of bowing to some outside authority. Obama never has, with the exception of the King of Saudi Arabia. If he were to be impeached tomorrow, as some urge, he simply wouldn't leave. I don't know what he will do if he loses the election, simply because I don't think he knows what he will do-- I don't think the prospect of losing has seriously entered his mind. If he loses it will be a pitched battle between Valerie Jarrett and Michelle Obama on one shoulder telling him to stay and Joe Biden and whatever unfortunate soul is Chief-of-Staff at that point acting as the voices of reason telling him that it's over.

Taxpayers are reminded that the president's healthcare law is one of the largest tax increases in American history.
Obamacare contains 20 new or higher taxes on American families and small businesses.
Arranged by their respective effective dates, below is the total list of all $500 billion-plus in tax hikes (over the next ten years) in Obamacare, where to find them in the bill, and how much your taxes are scheduled to go up as of today:
Taxes that took effect in 2010:
1. Excise Tax on Charitable Hospitals (Min$/immediate): $50,000 per hospital if they fail to meet new "community health assessment needs," "financial assistance," and "billing and collection" rules set by HHS. Bill: PPACA; Page: 1,961-1,971.
2. Codification of the "economic substance doctrine" (Tax hike of $4.5 billion). This provision allows the IRS to disallow completely-legal tax deductions and other legal tax-minimizing plans just because the IRS deems that the action lacks "substance" and is merely intended to reduce taxes owed. Bill: Reconciliation Act; Page: 108-113.
3. "Black liquor" tax hike (Tax hike of $23.6 billion). This is a tax increase on a type of bio-fuel. Bill: Reconciliation Act; Page: 105.
4. Tax on Innovator Drug Companies ($22.2 bil/Jan 2010): $2.3 billion annual tax on the industry imposed relative to share of sales made that year. Bill: PPACA; Page: 1,971-1,980.
5. Blue Cross/Blue Shield Tax Hike ($0.4 bil/Jan 2010): The special tax deduction in current law for Blue Cross/Blue Shield companies would only be allowed if 85 percent or more of premium revenues are spent on clinical services. Bill: PPACA; Page: 2,004.
6. Tax on Indoor Tanning Services ($2.7 billion/July 1, 2010): New 10 percent excise tax on Americans using indoor tanning salons. Bill: PPACA; Page: 2,397-2,399.
Taxes that took effect in 2011:
7. Medicine Cabinet Tax ($5 bil/Jan 2011): Americans no longer able to use health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), or health reimbursement (HRA) pre-tax dollars to purchase non-prescription, over-the-counter medicines (except insulin). Bill: PPACA; Page: 1,957-1,959.
8. HSA Withdrawal Tax Hike ($1.4 bil/Jan 2011): Increases additional tax on non-medical early withdrawals from an HSA from 10 to 20 percent, disadvantaging them relative to IRAs and other tax-advantaged accounts, which remain at 10 percent. Bill: PPACA; Page: 1,959.
Taxes that took effect in 2012:
9. Employer Reporting of Insurance on W-2 (Min$/Jan 2012): Preamble to taxing health benefits on individual tax returns. Bill: PPACA; Page: 1,957.
Taxes that take effect in 2013:
10. Surtax on Investment Income ($123 billion/Jan. 2013): Creation of a new, 3.8 percent surtax on investment income earned in households making at least $250,000 ($200,000 single). This would result in the following top tax rates on investment income: Bill: Reconciliation Act; Page: 87-93.

13. Raise "Haircut" for Medical Itemized Deduction from 7.5% to 10% of AGI ($15.2 bil/Jan 2013): Currently, those facing high medical expenses are allowed a deduction for medical expenses to the extent that those expenses exceed 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income (AGI). The new provision imposes a threshold of 10 percent of AGI. Waived for 65+ taxpayers in 2013-2016 only. Bill: PPACA; Page: 1,994-1,995
14. Flexible Spending Account Cap - aka "Special Needs Kids Tax" ($13 bil/Jan 2013): Imposes cap on FSAs of $2500 (now unlimited). Indexed to inflation after 2013. There is one group of FSA owners for whom this new cap will be particularly cruel and onerous: parents of special needs children. There are thousands of families with special needs children in the United States, and many of them use FSAs to pay for special needs education. Tuition rates at one leading school that teaches special needs children in Washington, D.C. (National Child Research Center) can easily exceed $14,000 per year. Under tax rules, FSA dollars can be used to pay for this type of special needs education. Bill: PPACA; Page: 2,388-2,389
15. Elimination of tax deduction for employer-provided retirement Rx drug coverage in coordination with Medicare Part D ($4.5 bil/Jan 2013) Bill: PPACA; Page: 1,994
16. $500,000 Annual Executive Compensation Limit for Health Insurance Executives ($0.6 bil/Jan 2013). Bill: PPACA; Page: 1,995-2,000

17. Individual Mandate Excise Tax (Jan 2014): Starting in 2014, anyone not buying "qualifying" health insurance must pay an income surtax according to the higher of the following

If the employer requires a waiting period to enroll in coverage of 30-60 days, there is a $400 tax per employee ($600 if the period is 60 days or longer).Bill: PPACA; Page: 345-346

20. Excise Tax on Comprehensive Health Insurance Plans ($32 bil/Jan 2018): Starting in 2018, new 40 percent excise tax on "Cadillac" health insurance plans ($10,200 single/$27,500 family). We went to this new tea party group for YOUNG people in Conshohocken the other night and it was filled with energy! Lots of young people were there and they are psyched to stop the train wreck of socialism. If YOU are angry and feel helpless and want to do something about it in addition to praying, please get connected with this group (below) on Facebook! They are networked across the entire country with all the other tea party groups, "912 groups," and other freedom-loving people--many who have grandparents who fought and died in World War II and other battles. There are many more younger tea party groups springing up as it dawns on teens and 20-somethings that THEY will be the ones living under mandates . . . endless new mandates. We haven't even discussed the fact that we do NOT have the money to pay for ObamaCare!!!
These young people GET IT--it is them that will suffer under socialism, under the crushing debt, under devastating unemployment, and under a horrible NO-WORK ethic creeping across our country. Socialism will kill the spirit of our citizens. This group is committed to making a huge difference, right here in Montgomery County.
Also, we met Perry Bentley, the 22-year old Field Director for the MontCo Victory Center to UNELECT OBAMA. Perry said that on July 7 there is a kickoff for anyone who is interested to help in lots of ways to get rid of Obama: phone calls, door knocking, and much more. "Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization
Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.
The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

The Energy Revolution and Its Discontents
With all the gloomy economic news coming out of late, one bright spot flew under the radar last week: the United States is poised to be the proverbial center of the energy universe. A recent study by Harvard Research Fellow Leonardo Maugeri found that the United States' incredible shale reserves represent "the most important revolution in the oil sector in decades."
Thanks to the technological revolution brought about by the combined use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, the U.S. is now exploiting its huge and virtually untouched shale and tight oil fields, whose production - although still in its infancy - is already skyrocketing in North Dakota and Texas.
Few Americans are more cognizant of this energy revolution's possibilities than those who live in the towns sitting above the nation's largest shale formations. The Heritage Foundation traveled to Willison, North Dakota, above the massive Bakken shale, to hear first-hand how the oil boom there has improved residents' lives. But there are forces looking to undermine North Dakota's oil boom. "The area that we worry the most about would be the federal government and regulations," explained Willison Mayor Ward Koeser, "specifically the Environmental Protection Agency." Koeser's concerns are not without merit. The EPA has a history of wrongfully targeting companies using hydraulic fracturing for supposed environmental contamination. When a top EPA official, Region 6 administrator Al Armedariz, compared his enforcement philosophy to Roman crucifixions, the agency's history of enforcement actions against oil and gas drillers - both use hydraulic fracturing to extract resources from shale - belied Armendariz's subsequent apology and walk-back. Armendariz just took a job at the Sierra Club, a radical environmentalist group that has undertaken a massive campaign against the extraction of natural gas from shale only a few years after it championed natural gas as a cleaner alternative to coal and oil. The left's emerging hostility to "fracking" has the potential to derail the amazing economic opportunity that shale presents. So it should come as little surprise that the political consequences of that hostility are bearing themselves out in places like Western Pennsylvania, which sits on huge shale gas reserves. Roll Call's Stuart Rothenberg reported over the weekend that Pennsylvania, which over the past 20 years has moved further left in terms of its voting patterns, is suddenly more competitive. "Western Pennsylvania increasingly looks like West Virginia or southeastern Ohio," Rothenberg notes. Rothenberg, appropriately concerned with the political analysis, did not connect the dots: Western Pennsylvania, Southeastern Ohio, and West Virginia are all major energy-producing states (or parts of states). The Utica, Marcellus, and Devonian shale formations, for instance, represent major economic opportunities in those states. From the federal perspective, then, a sensible energy policy would at least refrain from proactively discouraging those opportunities, as Heritage's Nick Loris has suggested:
An aggressive energy policy that opens access, provides a timely permitting process as well as environmental and judicial review, and places a freeze on new environmental regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would go a long way to help lower energy prices, create jobs, and bring revenue into the financially strapped government that's racked up [over] $15 trillion in debt.
But left-wing environmentalists continue to fight against the country's natural gas and oil boom. That boom has the potential not just to revitalize parts of the American economy, but to infuse economic vitality into some of the nation's most economically distressed communities. Don't be surprised when those communities stand up to regulatory overreach and environmental hysteria.

Nice Try: Obama Released Restrictive New Energy Plan Under Cover of SCOTUS, Holder Contempt

File this one under While You Were Out: the Obama Administration unveiled its new five-year energy plan on Thursday, when the rest of us were conveniently preoccupied with SCOTUS and the Holder contempt vote. Real smooth.
Of course, it's pretty clear why they wanted this to fly under the radar: as Hot Air's Erika Johnsen noted on Saturday, the plan is just not good. She points out that it opens up a miniscule percentage of our offshore resources, but not nearly enough to make a dent in our energy use, and what's more, by constraining the number of jobs that this could produce, it does nothing to help the economy. Some details:
U.S. oil companies will be allowed to drill in more areas of the Gulf of Mexico but won only limited access to the Arctic under the final version of the Obama Administration's five year drilling plan that was slammed by industry and some environmentalists. The 2012-2017 plan calls for three potential lease sales in areas offshore Alaska but the auctions would not be held until the final years of the plan because of environmental concerns about operating in the Arctic. "Today, the Obama Administration has announced a bleak future for American energy production by keeping 85 percent of America's offshore areas under lock and key and refusing to open any new areas to drilling," said Doc Hastings, Republican chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee.

Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on. Eric Cantor & The Pro-Life Statists Take Sides In North Carolina North Carolina's 8th Congressional District provides the quintessential battleground between go-along to get-along Republicans and small government conservatives. 3. Individual Mandate A Tax Or A Penalty For conservatives, the debate over whether the individual mandate in ObamaCare is called a tax or a penalty has become a litmus test for the Romney campaign's conservative credentials. It should not. Eric Fehrnstrom, Spokesman for Mitt Romney, said on MSNBC earlier this week that Romney "believes that what we put in place in Massachusetts was a penalty, and he disagrees with the court's ruling that the mandate was a tax." There is nothing inherently non-conservative about this statement. Believing that the individual mandate is not a tax is consistent with Justices Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas and Alito's opinion that the individual mandate is not a proper exercise of the federal government's taxing power. Today, Mitt Romney walked back Fehrnstrom's statement with his own declaration that the individual mandate in ObamaCare is a tax. Conservatives should not be so hung up on the declaration of the individual mandate being called a tax or a penalty. The goal is complete and total repeal of ObamaCare. 4. Natural Gas Economics: A Look Under the Hood Christmas comes in June for energy geeks and graph junkies. Every year, the Energy Information Administration of the Department of Energy releases its Annual Energy Outlook (AEO), a compendium of 30-tear forecasts and analyses of energy sources and uses. The 212 page .pdf file contains tables, bar charts and area graphs galore, enough to provide blog fodder at least until Christmas (the December one). This week's installment is a look at production decline curves from selected shale gas plays. The extreme rates of decline experienced in these wells has interesting and far-reaching policy implications, although this angle is rarely described in the mainstream press. For the energy operator, the performance of his wells in aggregate determine the success or failure of his enterprise. For the nation, shale well performance has become a key factor in energy policy and planning.

First the History Channel aired a "documentary" version of Howard Zinn's fake history of the United States (the one that begins with the claim that 12 million native Americans were killed in the Indian wars). Now Oliver Stone and a marxist professor from American University have created a ten part "history" of America and the world since World War 2. Showtime, owned by CBS, thought this was worth airing. At a press conference to promote the series, Stone revealed that Hitler and Stalin were misunderstood.
Ron Radosh of PJ Media has been one of the few journalists to cover this appalling new way for Americans to unlearn their history.

If the Administration had wanted to make the point the Israel is a valued partner in counterterrorism activities, it could have insisted that Israel be there or else moved the meeting.
In light of increased sensitivity to intelligence leaks, it seemed innocuous - or even admirable - when the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) asked the Senate to remove a few words from the US-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act: the "sense of the Senate" part of the bill included the sentence, "Expand already close intelligence cooperation, including satellite intelligence, with the Government of Israel;" ODNI wanted the words "including satellite intelligence" to go.
An ODNI spokesman said it was "simply a matter of clarifying the intelligence aspects of the bill and being sensitive to the level of specificity of the language...nothing nefarious here, just more clear language."
Yeah, right.
This is just the latest example of the Obama Administration making clear that it does not want to be seen as Israel's partner in regional affairs - several of them predicated on Turkish desires. Despite Israel's status as a Major Non-NATO ally, a NATO "partner" country, and a member of NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue, Turkey is increasingly insistent that Israel be isolated and cut out. This surrender to Turkey -- which Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has for years been aggressively making ever more fundamentalist -- coincides nicely with the Administration's increasingly open courtship of Turkey's Islamist-leaning and virulently anti-Israel Prime Minister and what appears to be the desire of the Administration to enhance security relations in the Arab-Muslim world as it dials back visible cooperation with Israel.

Romney to Visit Israel (While Obama Still Hasn't As President)
Mitt Romney plans to visit Israel this summer, The New York Times reported Monday evening quoting Israeli sources, which the Romney campaign later confirmed. Reuters reports the trip will take place in late July. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, Israeli President Shimon Peres, opposition Labor Party leaders and U.S. Ambassador Daniel Shapiro during his trip which is expected to last less than two days.
Romney's pre-election trip emphasizes the fact that Obama has yet to visit Israel as president, though he has already traveled to 30 countries since being elected. It was noted by some commentators that even the president of a country not exactly known for its warm relations with Israel, Russia's Vladimir Putin, traveled to the Middle Eastern nation last week.

While the Declaration of Independence formally declared our independence from Great Britain, it accomplished so much more. Its unique combination of general principles and government theory has resulted in an enduring nation. With Independence Day just around the corner, it is important to be reminded of our Founding Fathers' foresight and why the Declaration's principles matter 236 years later.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness; that, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.

Manufacturing sector shrinks for first time in three years

Even though this week will have most Americans distracted from the news while celebrating Independence Day with families and friends, that doesn't mean that there won't be important news this week. On Friday, we'll get the jobs report from June, which so far doesn't look promising, as well as a precursor report from ADP on private-sector job growth, as well as other economic indicators for the previous period. Yesterday, one of the biggest came out - and it was bad news for the US economy. Manufacturing "plummeted," Reuters reported, according to the composite index from the Institute of Supply Management:
U.S. manufacturing shrank in June for the first time in nearly three years as new orders plummeted, according to one measure of the sector that provided a stark sign of the economic recovery's slowdown. The Institute for Supply Management said on Monday its index of national factory activity fell to 49.7 from 53.5 the month before, missing expectations of 52.0, according to a Reuters poll of economists, and below even the lowest forecast. It was the first time since July 2009 that the index has fallen below the 50 mark that separates expansion from contraction. That was shortly after the U.S. economy emerged from recession.

Anthony Daniels, who writes under the pen name Theodore Dalrymple, is a retired prison doctor and psychiatrist who tells of his experiences with his patients in "Life at the Bottom." It's an insightful book of essays about the self-destructive behavior and attitudes of the underclass.
In one essay, "We Don't Want No Education," reprinted by City Journal, Dalrymple says that he cannot recall meeting a 16-year-old from the public housing project near his hospital who could perform simple multiplication operations, such as nine times seven. One 17-year-old told him, "We didn't get that far." This was after 12 years of attending school. One of Dalrymple's patients took a drug overdose because of constant bullying from classmates. "She was stupid because she was clever." What her peers meant by that was anyone who worked hard and performed well at school was wasting his time when truancy and wandering downtown were deemed preferable. The underlying threat was: If you don't mend your ways and join us, we'll beat you up.
These weren't simply idle threats. Dalrymple says he's often met people in their 20s or 30s in his practice who gave up at school under such duress. Those who attend a school that has very high academic standards risk a beating if they venture into neighborhoods where the underclass live. He recalls treating two boys in the emergency room after they'd been beaten and two others who had taken overdoses for fear of being beaten at the hands of their neighbors.
. . . The reader may have been misled, with my help, into thinking that "We Don't Want No Education" is about the black underclass, but it's about the white underclass in Britain.

"Battles would not be great and triumphant if they were easy. The more the Left undermines Rule of Law, the more glorious the reconstitution and restoration will be, the mightier the battle, and the mightier the men who will fight it. I simply pray that I continue to grow to fight that war, just as I am fighting this one, and that God preserves me to do so. God provided us with the means and the personal example to triumph over the greatest of evils, He has provided us with the solutions to our own problems, we simply must trust it is within His plan.
"Keep fighting the good fight, do not despair on the 4th of July, but celebrate that Providence provided us with the greatest blueprint for governments among men in 1789, with the spirit of 1776. As Alexander Hamilton said, 'The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for among old parchments or musty records. They are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature, by the Hand of Divinity itself, and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power.' Our rights are only referenced by the Declaration, but endowed by our Creator, and as such, are self-evident. Obama cannot erase them and long after we are dead and gone, the rights of man will be preserved in the essence of God's creation available only through reflection in His gift of reason. Evil ultimately will not prevail -- we are blueprinted with Victory."

During a radio interview today, legendary comic Jackie Mason panned the logic of Chief Justice John Roberts' ruling on Obamacare, saying the 2,700-page decision was so convoluted it could have been written by Mason himself as material for a one-man Broadway show.
The funny man further lampooned the healthcare law itself, joking it could have been crafted by Groucho Marx, Jackie Gleason or Bob Hope.

White House boast to blacks: We reduced crack cocaine penalties. Jarrett makes unreported remarks in meeting with African Americans. President Obama's top aid, Valerie Jarrett, reportedly boasted to the black community how the administration sharply reduced the penalties for possession of crack cocaine.
Jarrett made the remarks at a meeting of Black journalists and columnist this past weekend clearly aimed at Obama's reelection efforts. Mainstream media outlets covering the event did not report on her comments regarding crack cocaine.
This past Saturday, Jarrett engaged in a wide-ranging interview session with a group of journalists at the National Association of Black Journalists' convention in New Orleans.

In the summer of 1776 our Founding Fathers gathered in Philadelphia to decide not whether they would tell King George III they had had enough, but how to word their message. They wanted nothing about our Declaration of Independence to be ambiguous.
They explained that it had become necessary to dissolve the political bands that connected them to England because they were entitled by God to have certain inalienable rights the British Crown refused to recognize. Our Founding Fathers confidently proclaimed the truths they relied upon were self-evident. To ground their declaration in logic they presented a list of evils and abuses George III had committed. It reads like a criminal indictment. Here are some of the charges they listed against the English King.

Chief Justice John Roberts rewrote the specific language of congress by claiming in his ObamaCare ruling that the penalty which the lawmakers had clearly attached to the individual mandate was actually a tax. It was the only way in which the Affordable Care Act could be saved, for the Court rejected the Commerce and Necessary and Proper clause defenses as constitutional grounds for the existence of the law.
By "penciling in" the tax language necessary to satisfy his own requirement of constitutionality, Roberts behaved no differently from any liberal, activist judge so often criticized by conservatives for judicial malfeasance; that is, he cheated rather than rule against a personally favored piece of legislation.
The question is WHY? WHY did the Chief Justice defraud the Court and the American public rather than rule ObamaCare unconstitutional?

Paul wrote yesterday that Mitt Romney is well positioned, politically, on Obamacare despite his campaign's supposed confusion during the last few days as to whether the mandate is or is not a tax. That is my view as well. Is the mandate a tax, or isn't it? I don't think the question poses a dilemma for Romney. Quizzed on the subject by CBS in an interview that will air tonight and tomorrow, he responded nicely:
JAN CRAWFORD: Let's talk about the law and whether the mandate is a tax because, of course, the court said it was a tax. Congress could pass this as part of its taxing power. The President disagrees with that. He said that it's a penalty, it's not a tax. Republicans across the country have seized on this saying he's secretly trying to raise taxes. Your senior adviser said that you believe that it's not a tax; that you agree with the President that the mandate is just a penalty. Why don't you think the mandate is a tax?
GOV. ROMNEY: Well, the Supreme Court has the final word and their final word is that Obamacare is a tax. So it's a tax. They decided it was constitutional. So it is a tax and it's constitutional. That's the final word-that's what it is. Now, I agreed with the dissent. I would have taken a different course, but the dissent wasn't the majority. The majority has ruled and their rule is final. It is a tax.
CRAWFORD: So you believe that-you would say that the mandate now is a tax?
ROMNEY: Well, that the law of the land. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the nation and it said that it's a tax, so it's a tax. That's what it is. And what I'd like to hear is how President Obama can say he doesn't think it's a tax. He disagrees with the court. He thinks the court is inaccurate. If that's the case, then he must think the bill is unconstitutional because, in order to find it constitutional, they had to find it a tax. And by the way, don't forget, it was his Solicitor General that went into the court and argued it was a tax. And the conclusion of the court that it's constitutional...
CRAWFORD: Are you [inaudible]?
ROMNEY: ...the conclusion of the court was in order for them to find it constitutional, they had to find it was a tax. So it is a tax.
CRAWFORD: Have you changed your views on this? I mean, do you now believe that it is a tax, at the federal level, that the Supreme Court has said it is a tax, so it is a tax.
ROMNEY: Well, I said that I agreed with the dissent and the dissent made it very clear that they felt it was unconstitutional, but the dissent lost. It's in the minority. And so now, the Supreme Court has spoken, and, while I agreed with the dissent, that's taken over by the fact that the majority of the court said it's a tax and, therefore, it is a tax. They have spoken. There's no way around that. You can try and say you wished they had decided a different way, but they didn't. They concluded it was a tax. That's what it is and the American people know that President Obama has broken the pledge he made. He said he wouldn't raise taxes on middle-income Americans. Not only did he raise the $500 billion that was already in the bill, it's now clear that his mandate as described by the Supreme Court is a tax.
CRAWFORD: But does that mean that the mandate in the state of Massachusetts under your health care law also is a tax? I mean, you raised taxes as governor.
ROMNEY: Actually the chief justice in his opinion made it very clear that at the state level, states have the power to put in place mandates. They don't need to require them to be called taxes in order for them to be constitutional. And as a result, Massachusetts' mandate was a mandate, was a penalty, was described that way by the legislature and by me, and so it stays as it was.
CRAWFORD: So at the state level because of ... you're saying the Supreme Court says that's different, that the federal government - the powers are different between the states and the federal government? Does that make sense to you?
ROMNEY: Just take a read of the opinion. The chief justice said that states have what's known as police power, and states can implement penalties and mandates and so forth under their constitutions, which is what Massachusetts did. But the federal government does not have those powers, and therefore for the Supreme Court to reach the conclusion it did - that the law was constitutional - they had to find it was a tax, and they did. And therefore Obamacare's a tax. Like it or not, it's a tax.
Romney is correct about the majority's discussion of the police power. Now, will most voters understand the difference between the states and the federal government with respect to their power to impose mandates, including a requirement to buy insurance? Probably not. They should, since their state government has long required them to buy automobile insurance, but they probably don't. Moreover, to the extent they understand the difference, most voters won't care; the point is relevant only from a constitutional, not from a policy, perspective. But it just doesn't matter. The Supreme Court has spoken: for Obamacare to be constitutional, the mandate must be a tax. The Democrats will get nowhere by talking about whether to call the mandate a tax or a penalty; on the contrary, the more they bring the subject up, the worse for them and the better for Republicans.

I have previously recommended Bernard Lewis's memoir, Notes on a Century, for its wonderful combination of insight and anecdote regarding life, the study of history, and the Middle East. The following anecdote is among my favorites:
Sometime in the early 1970s at a time when I was in Tehran, Senator Kennedy suddenly arrived, unannounced and unexpected. The Shah was angry. He felt that a visit by a U.S. Senator, particularly one with the dynastic name of Kennedy, was a state occasion and that he should therefore have been notified in advance so that appropriate arrangements could be made.
Despite his annoyance, however, the Shah felt that he had to go ahead and do something to honor so distinguished a visitor. He dealt with this problem by finding a subtle Iranian way of honoring and rebuking Senator Kennedy at the same time.
The Palace gave a formal dinner at which the Senator was the guest of honor. However, the Shah himself did not participate in this dinner, but instead left the task of presiding to his teenage granddaughter. From an Iranian point of view this sent a clear message.
The Senator, however, was delighted . . . I was invited to this dinner . . . and I have no doubt that he enjoyed this dinner with the teenage girl much more than he would have enjoyed it with His Imperial Majesty . . .
The Senator was, I am told, quite unaware of the fact that he was being subtly rebuked.

"Rational" markets in which sellers compete; purchasers decide based on price, quality, service, brand. Cronyism, nepotism, elites reserving the goods for themselves - This is the opposite, the antithesis of American capitalism. This is why we revolted in the first place.

Liberalism's Biggest Lie

What is liberalism's current equivalent of "Of course I'll still respect you in the morning!," or, "The [welfare] check is in the mail"?* Without question it is that they only want the "rich" to pay their "fair share." You can waterboard a liberal, but you'll never get a specific definition of what constitutes the "fair" tax rate for "the rich" that isn't always "more than the rate they're paying now."
Right now the Obama Administration's talking point is that they want the rich to pay "a little bit more" to help balance the budget and (somehow) help the economy get back on its feet. So let's roll the tape: in the 1990 budget deal, liberals demanded that the rich pay "a little bit more" to help reduce the deficit, so President George H.W. Bush agreed to raise the top income tax rate from 28 percent to 31 percent, sacrificing his chances for a second term in the process. But that wasn't enough: Bill Clinton demanded that the rich pay "a little bit more" in his first budget in 1993, and raised the top marginal income tax rate to 36 percent (though actually an effective rate of 39 percent when all the monkey business with the phase out of certain deductions and credits were considered). President George W. Bush managed to cut rates temporarily back closer to the pre-Clinton levels, but it is these rates that will expire at the end of the year unless Congress acts. Meanwhile, Obamacare will add a 3.8 percent surtax on capital gains and dividends starting January 1.
The big lie is that liberals only want to tax the rich alone, because even a fiscal dunce like Obama knows that complete confiscation of the wealth of the rich won't begin to come close to filling our fiscal hole. "Tax the rich" is always just misdirection for raising taxes on the middle class, where the real money is. So here are two predictions. Right now everyone thinks Congress will want to avoid the "taxmageddon" of a huge tax increase on January 1, and will make some adjustments in a lame duck session after the election, no matter who wins. I predict that if Obama wins, he will block any tax relief and allow all the Bush tax rates to expire, raising taxes on the middle class as well as those grubby rich folk. Even if Democrats lose the White House and both houses of Congress, the Democratic Senate might block a lame duck fix just out of spite.
But it might get even more extreme than this. I saw an Obama spokesbabe-I forget which one-on TV last night complaining that corporations needed to pay more because they're sitting on all that cash they've earned (she actually left out the "earned" part, but I thought I'd try to be accurate), and ought to be "stepping up" and let the government tax it away so the government can spend it to help revive the economy. It is not enough, apparently, that the U.S. has the world's highest corporate tax rate, which leads most of our multinationals to keep all of their foreign earnings overseas rather than bringing their capital home. Corporations should still be made to pay "a little bit more."
This leads to prediction #2: If Obama is re-elected, look for him to propose for the first time ever a general wealth tax, where successful individuals and corporations will be required to pay an excise tax on their net worth. It's long been a dream of redistributive liberalism, and Obama is nothing if not a "share the wealth" redistributist.
*Of course, "The [welfare] check is in the mail" is one promise liberalism actually does keep, whether there's money in the treasury to pay for it or not.

Mitch McConnell is in the headlines again for saying the odds are against those wanting repeal of Obamacare. "[I]t's a lot harder to undo something than it is to stop it in the first place," he said in part.
For once, let's give McConnell the benefit of the doubt and suggest he is talking about the present Congress, not the next Congress, though in actual context he seems to mean both. Let's be charitable.
The truth is, I don't expect Republicans in Congress to be fully committed to repeal next year even if they have Mitt Romney in the White House, a Republican Senate, and hold the House.
We've played this game before. And yes, we are being played.
We are being played by a group of Republican leaders who have consistently shown in the past few years to lack the testicular fortitude to do what's right when it counts - they are the John Robertses of Congress.
Republicans, at this point, are all about drawing lines in the sand against the Democrats only to wipe them away with their feet.

Celebrating Self-Government
Every Fourth of July, Americans celebrate with fireworks and barbeques and John Philip Sousa. Then we return to our regularly scheduled lives. But this Independence Day is different. Last week, the Supreme Court upheld Obamacare, an unprecedented expansion of government's power into one-sixth of the economy and a tremendous loss to individual liberty. Now more than ever we need to embrace our nation's First Principles and remember what it takes to be self-governing citizens. The Declaration of Independence announced to the world that the American colonies were free and independence states, no longer ruled by Great Britain. It articulated certain truths about people and governments: all men equally possess certain rights, and the government operates by our consent to secure these rights. The Declaration of Independence is about self-government. Typically, that brings to mind the basics of political participation: voting, signing petitions, serving on a jury, and complaining to your congressman. These activities are important, but they aren't the whole story. The Founders understood self-government in a twofold sense: political self-government, by which we govern ourselves as a political community and moral self-government, according to which each individual is responsible for governing himself. The Founders relied on four virtues to sustain individual self-government.
- Self-reliance. Forged through hard work, it prevents citizens from depending on the state.
- Courage. Self-confident citizens nourish freedom and defend liberty from foreign and domestic threats.
- Responsibility. Independent citizens understand the limits of government and solve problems for themselves.
- Moderation. Reasonable citizens control their impulses, and respect the rights of others, the constitutional process, and the rule of law.
But this understanding of self-governing citizens has been supplanted by a new version of the modern ideal citizen. Recently, Americans met Julia, the faceless cartoon woman starring in an online ad for the Obama campaign. She's the modern American girl whose success in life can be chalked up to the helping hand of government. She gets a federally-subsidized education, college loans, free birth control, free prenatal care (when she "decides to have a child;" no father is mentioned), a small business loan, and retirement security because of the ever-present and ever-President Obama. Her success apparently has nothing to do with her own initiative, talent or hard work. It's attributed to government programs, there to bless and subsidize every activity of life. The idea of self-government, which is at heart of the Declaration of Independence, has been replaced. We're being told, essentially, that we're incapable of governing ourselves. Instead, we need bureaucrats to determine what our children learn in Head Start, and primary school. Other faceless desk jockeys will approve our college loans. With the Supreme Court upholding Obamacare, even more bureaucrats will be necessary to select our health care plans. Experts aren't just "helping" with life-changing issues such as education and healthcare. There's also a slate of bureaucrats to cover the mundane activities of life: picking light bulbs, deciding credit-card terms, and figuring out how much cola it's safe to consume. This isn't what our forefathers fought for. To name one: Levi Preston was in his early twenties when he fought in the Battle of Concord, the beginning of the American Revolution. Years later he was asked why he fought. Preston responded that it wasn't the tax on tea. "I never drank a drop of the stuff; the boys threw it all overboard." It wasn't the burdensome Stamp Act. "I never saw any stamps." Nor was it John Locke's inspiring book. "We read only the Bible, the catechism, Watt's Psalms and Hymns, and the Almanack." Well, what was it? "What we meant in going for those redcoats was this: we always had governed ourselves, and we always meant to. They didn't mean we should." On this Fourth of July, let's remember our principles and celebrate our self-government. Then, the rest of the year, let's do our best to live them out.

New Report Shows Outsourcing Fears Misplaced
While fears of "outsourcing" continue to make headlines, the facts show there is no "giant sucking sound" resulting from dollars fleeing the United States to be invested in other countries. Outsourcing occurs when companies close facilities in the United States and invest in new operations in other countries. Some people believe that the ability of people to invest anywhere in the world is bad for the United States, since jobs will be outsourced to low-wage countries.

Senate Flood Insurance Compromise Will Reduce Taxpayer Cost of Disasters
Further scrambling to pay for transportation projects and the subsidized student loan interest rate freeze, Congress is now debating to add a five-year flood insurance extension to the burgeoning bill. Revenue gained from higher premiums to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) should begin to repay the $17.5 billion the program owes to taxpayers-not to pay for more spending. A related Senate measure under consideration, however, would help protect taxpayers from bearing a yet larger burden.

Williams Anthony Daniels, who writes under the pen name Theodore Dalrymple, is a retired prison doctor and psychiatrist who tells of his experiences with his patients in "Life at the Bottom." It's an insightful book of essays about the self-destructive behavior and attitudes of the underclass. His evidence from Britain shows that the welfare state is an equal opportunity destroyer.

Does the Declaration of Independence Still Matter?
The Declaration of Independence was partly intended as a list of grievances against a distant monarch. And both George III and the colonists who disagreed with his rule are long dead. But so are many of those who've argued that the Declaration is obsolete. In fact, this is exactly what those who called themselves "progressives" were saying a century ago.
Woodrow Wilson, one of the most famous early progressives, argued during the 1912 presidential campaign that "all that Progressives ask or desire is permission...to interpret the Constitution according to the Darwinian principle," meaning that it should promote an ever-expanding set of powers for an ever-expanding government. The problem, he declared, was that pesky Declaration of Independence: "Some citizens of this country have never got beyond the Declaration of Independence," he remarked. "The Declaration of Independence did not mention the questions of our day."

Noted Conservative teen flip flops to become a liberal
13 year old Jonathan Krohn was the toast of CPAC a few years ago when he spoke on the future of conservatism. Now 17, he's flipped to being a liberal.
