An
Oration
Delivered
Before the Inhabitants of the Town of Newburyport, at their request, on the Sixty-First Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, July 4th, 1837.
By John Quincy Adams.
. . .
Why is it that, next to the birthday of the Savior of the World, your most joyous and most venerated festival returns on this day? - And why is it that, among the swarming myriads of our population, thousands and tens of thousands among us, abstaining, under the dictate of religious principle, from the commemoration of that birth-day of Him, who brought life and immortality to light, yet unite with all their brethren of this community, year after year, in celebrating this, the birth-day of the nation?
Is it not that, in the chain of human events, the birthday of the nation is indissolubly linked with the birthday of the Savior? That it forms a leading event in the progress of the gospel dispensation? Is it not that the Declaration of Independence first organized the social compact on the foundation of the Redeemer's mission upon earth? That it laid the corner stone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity, and gave to the world the first irrevocable pledge of the fulfillment of the prophecies, announced directly from Heaven at the birth of the Savior and predicted by the greatest of the Hebrew prophets six hundred years before?

Activate: How to turn the 2012 election from a close call to a mandate
Last night, Glenn focused on the importance of commitment. He was the first to admit, a lot of last night's show was something you had heard before - but it's important to start at the beginning and to make sure you know what you believe before you get put into action. And tonight, Glenn revealed ways for you to really get moving!
Tonight, the focus of the show was "Activate" - and it was all about the election and how you can make sure that one way or another - 2012 is a year for a mandate for or against the progressives. And if you think it doesn't matter just take a look at what is happening right now in Wisconsin. Progressives and unions are doing everything they can to make sure that Walker loses. It's a microcosm to what is happening around the country, and Glenn thought it was so important that he recapped it on tonight's show (in under three minutes!):

Obama's defense budget imperils nation, says Donald Rumsfeld
Monday, July 02, 2012
By Martin Barillas

Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who served in the George W. Bush administration, warned in a recent speech that military and financial weakness on the part of the United States is creating a more dangerous and unstable world. "What I worry about most today is American weakness," Rumsfeld told a conference on Capitol Hill that was organized by the Defense Forum Foundation. "The signal of weakness is a dangerous one," he said. He also asserted that Congress and the federal government are dysfunctional and inadequate in the increasingly complex information age. He is calling for a high-level commission to modernize both the executive and legislative arms of American government. Rumsfeld said that America's government "isn't working very well," because bureaucracies and other world institutions such as the United Nations were set up during the industrial age. "The world's changed. We're now in the information age, and those institutions really don't serve us very well," he said.
Asserting that "the world has been a safer place because of the United States of America," the perception of American weakness on the part of adversaries can provoke them into conflict. He pointed out the importance of keeping the U.S. economy and military strong. "I look at the United States today and I think anyone has to worry," Rumsfeld said.

CCG July 10th Meeting - SAM ROHRER speaks on Conservative activism in an unprincipled political world
Dear Patriots,
Please save the date for the second Tuesday in July, July 10, when Sam Rohrer will address questions many conservatives have been asking themselves: how can a principled conservative stay actively involved in the political process when so much of politics seems to be about compromise, connections, power, money, and downright corruption? Is there any hope to effect real change in the GOP? in Harrisburg? in D.C.? Do we just need to "throw them all out" as so many frustrated Tea Party folks exclaim?
Most importantly, why should and how can principled conservatives get involved in this 2012 election when the only candidates close to our position who have a prayer of winning are a Romney, a Smith, and Congressmen like Fitzpatrick or Dent - each of whom has compromised conservative principles in some areas of practice or policy? From the perspective of a man of proven conservative principles who battled these issues for 14 years from inside the Capitol in Harrisburg, a discussion of this challenging dilemma should prove interesting and enlightening.
Please bring your thoughts and questions, invite your conservative friends who are ready to "throw in the towel" and give up the fight - and join us a week from Tuesday at the Quakertown Library. The proposed agenda is as follows:
6:30 Open discussion 6:50 "Constitutional Literacy" (Michael Farris) 20 minute video 7:15-8:20 SAM ROHRER - Q&A discussion 8:20-8:30 Wrap-up: Action Points
PLEASE PASS ON THIS INVITATION. For liberty, Jaime

Hey, everyone,
We went to this new tea party group for YOUNG people in Conshohocken the other night and it was filled with energy! Lots of young people were there and they are psyched to stop the train wreck of socialism. If YOU are angry and feel helpless and want to do something about it in addition to praying, please get connected with this group (below) on Facebook! They are networked across the entire country with all the other tea party groups, "912 groups," and other freedom-loving people--many who have grandparents who fought and died in World War II and other battles. There are many more younger tea party groups springing up as it dawns on teens and 20-somethings that THEY will be the ones living under mandates . . . endless new mandates. We haven't even discussed the fact that we do NOT have the money to pay for ObamaCare!!!
These young people GET IT--it is them that will suffer under socialism, under the crushing debt, under devastating unemployment, and under a horrible NO-WORK ethic creeping across our country. Socialism will kill the spirit of our citizens. This group is committed to making a huge difference, right here in Montgomery County.
Also, we met Perry Bentley, the 22-year old Field Director for the MontCo Victory Center to UNELECT OBAMA. Perry said that on July 7 there is a kickoff for anyone who is interested to help in lots of ways to get rid of Obama: phone calls, door knocking, and much more. Call 717 686-2219 to sign up and help get rid of Obama. To do nothing at this point is to allow tyranny, plain and simple. The time for watching t.v. is OVER. Your future children and grandchildren will ask you: what did you do to stop tyranny?
Michele
P.S. On the Communist Party USA website today, there was an article that said: "America will accept socialism peacefully without violence." Will that be you or will you FIGHT it???

The Next KTP Tea Social
Monday, July 9th at 7pm
Doylestown Moose Club
Let's get together and talk about our next steps as we get ready to take out Barack Obama and Bob Casey this Fall! After a very well attended Get Out The Vote training day in Bucks County in early June, we are now ready to put into practice all the tools we learned from FreedomWorks.
We all came together back in 2009 because we were outraged by the election of Barack Obama, the passage of Obamacare and the direction of our country financially and ideologically. The time has come, perhaps our last chance to truly make a stance, for us to unite and work to defeat the progressive agenda which has already infiltrated us so deeply. The first step towards a big win in November starts now! So, we, at The Kitchen Table Patriots, urge you to come out to make a difference, we can plug you in where you are needed.
This is where you can make a difference that really matters!

By allowing our attention to be focused exclusively on the danger and prevention of terrorism, we ignore the many other ways we are being attacked. Specifically, we are missing what our Islamist enemies call their 'civilization jihad' - a form of warfare that employs manipulative financial techniques, lawfare, infiltration of our civil institutions and government and insidious information dominance. Together, these have the effect of exploiting our liberties and governing structures against us, so that our leaders wind up imposing the very anti-American values that our enemies promote.
Welcome to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within - a 10-part, web-based video briefing that is designed to explain why and how this is happening.
It addresses a threat most Americans are unaware even exists within our country, let alone the degree of peril it represents. The threat is the totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine its adherents call "shariah" and the organized, disciplined and increasingly successful efforts by such adherents-- most especially the Muslim Brotherhood-- to bring it here.
We are making this course available in the hope of encouraging, informing and broadening support for national efforts to defeat the insinuation into this country of shariah's anti-constitutional and seditious program.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization
Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.
The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

The U.S. Constitution
A Reader
Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.

About Hillsdale College
Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."
Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs. Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012. |

From July 16 through July 18, 2012, Christians United for Israel will be holding its 7th Annual Washington Summit. We're going back to stand with Israel in our nation's capital. This year - more than ever - we need you to join us!
In the coming months, critical decisions are going to be made about Iran, Israel and the world. Finally, Washington is beginning to focus on the issue of a nuclear Iran. Many of our leaders want to confront this looming threat. But others want to keep kicking the can down the road. The debate is far from over.
- We know that when thousands of CUFI activists arrive in DC and on Capitol Hill, we can change the conversation.
- We can remind our leaders that a nuclear Iran is not only a threat to Israel, but to the US as well. And we can demonstrate to our elected officials that their constituents care enough about this issue to show up at their DC offices.
- We know that we can create a sense of immediacy that's otherwise lacking.
- We know that the more of us who show up and speak out -- the louder our voice and the greater our impact.
We stand at a critical juncture in history. Don't be silent! Don't miss your chance to make a difference! Don't pass up your opportunity to defend America and bless Israel!
Our leaders need to remember that we are watching them and we need to remember that God is watching us.
The time to speak out for Israel is now! Please register today for CUFI's 2012 DC Summit.

Tonight, Sunday June 3rd, CUFI Founder and Chairman, Pastor John Hagee, will be announcing an exciting new CUFI initiative. You can click here to watch it live at 7:30 PM Eastern (6:30 PM Central, 5:30 PM Mountain, 4:30 PM Pacific). This link will not be live until 7:30 PM Eastern (6:30 PM Central, 5:30 PM Mountain, 4:30 PM Pacific) tonight.
Tonight, Pastor Hagee will be announcing the creation of the Israel Defense Fund. This emergency fund will enable CUFI to meet the major challenges we anticipate in the coming months.
CUFI has accomplished great things for Israel. But the times in which we live demand that we do even more -- and do so now!
We need to do more to defend Israel in the public square and in the media. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to purchase more pro-Israel billboards across America as well as full-page newspaper ads as circumstances demand.
We need to do more to defend Israel on our college campuses. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to train even more students and hold even more pro-Israel events on campuses across the country.
We need to do more to defend Israel before our leaders. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to be more active than ever in educating our nation's leaders about the justice of Israel's cause.
Even if you can't watch the broadcast, don't miss out on the opportunity to be part of the Israel Defense Fund! Click here now to contribute.
We will not be silent. Together, we will do more than ever to stand up and speak up for Israel.
May God Bless You and Those that You Love, David Brog Executive Director CUFI

The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:
- Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
- Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
- Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care
The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

ObamaCare: What to do
On Saturday, in a conference call with leaders of Grass Roots conservative groups across the Nation, Matt Kibbe (CEO of Freedom Works) asked "what do you remember about the good things that Benedict Arnold did for the fledgling nation? The answer is that you probably don't know (he led a hugely successful victory in the Battle of Fort Ticonderoga). Just as Benedict Arnold will be only remembered for betraying his country, so shall Chief Justice John Robert be remembered for twisting constitutional authority, rewriting law and ignoring clear limits on the role of government set by our founding Fathers. This Supreme Court ruling will forever be tied to one man, Chief Justice John Roberts. What can you do? Each state has to decide two issues in the near term.
- Does it implement an expanded and unfunded Medicaid assistance? This will add hundreds of millions to PA's already strapped budget.
- Does PA implement an ObamaCare compliant Health Care Exchange?
The answer for the two above questions for supporters of limited government is not just "no", but "HELL NO". If you are interested in learning more you can visit our website and find out from "Dr. No", Dr. Nick Pandelidis, the ramifications of ObamaCare. Please contact Governor Corbett and your state Representative and Senator and tell them not to implement the expansion of Medicaid and not to establish a Health Care Exchange. We have an opportunity to slow the advance of socialism now. Make your voice heard by contacting your representatives.

Victory Center" on Facebook
-Gabriel Malor
Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on. RedState Morning Briefing
For July 3, 2012
1. The Truth. It Hurts.
Mitch McConnell is in the headlines again for saying the odds are against those wanting repeal of Obamacare. "[I]t's a lot harder to undo something than it is to stop it in the first place," he said in part.
For once, let's give McConnell the benefit of the doubt and suggest he is talking about the present Congress, not the next Congress, though in actual context he seems to mean both. Let's be charitable.
The truth is, I don't expect Republicans in Congress to be fully committed to repeal next year even if they have Mitt Romney in the White House, a Republican Senate, and hold the House.
We've played this game before. And yes, we are being played.
We are being played by a group of Republican leaders who have consistently shown in the past few years to lack the testicular fortitude to do what's right when it counts - they are the John Robertses of Congress.
2. Romney Camp: Obamacare Not a Tax
This is upsetting to say the least. The moment that the ruling came down last Thursday the hounds of hell were released by conservatives on twitter and in the blogosphere and videos galore of Obama saying the mandate was not a tax contrasted with news reports that the Supreme Court of the United States disagreed. In fact, not just disagreed but indicated that it was required for it to be a tax in order to pass the constitutional test.
Many articles were written with conservatives rubbing their hands together in gleeful anticipation of the next several months of Barack Obama trying to explain how he didn't break his promise on taxes while simultaneously claiming that the Supreme Court found his bill constitutional. It seemed obvious that these two things were in direct contradiction with one another given the decision, and assaulting the Democrats on this point was going to be easy.
Then comes word today that there are no such plans from the Romney camp.
3. Republicans Help Grow HUD and Big Government
The House just completed work on another FY 2013 spending bill; the Transportation-HUD Appropriations bill. This is a unique appropriations bill because most of the underlying content is an anathema to conservatives. A good part of transportation (highway spending) should be within the purview of state governments; mass transit spending should be eliminated; HUD should be abolished altogether. As you can imagine, the open floor process offered Republicans many opportunities to cut spending, and more importantly, to limit the power of the federal government in areas that it shouldn't be involved with in the first place

Pick a fight with a liberal on:
"SUSTAINABILITY." Mmm. It sounds so nice, doesn't it? Sustain-the word Sting chants (we can imagine) during his interminable tantric yoga sessions. Sustenance-stuff that tastes good and keeps you going. Sustainability-making sure that never again does the world suffer the mass slaughter of the buffalo or an overfishing disaster... Don't be fooled. The real reason you hear "sustainability" bandied about so much these days is because of a Marxist power grab which began at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit when chief organizer and One World Government advocate Maurice Strong inserted the word into key documents. Since the nit has spread like a virus through government and grass roots activist organizations. What "sustainability" really means is giving eco-Nazis over whom you have no democratic control carte blanche to dictate how you use your land, when and how you can travel, and even when you take a shower.

The recent story of Obama celebrating Independence Day in Paris with a massive fundraiser has prompted us to envision the Dear Leader as a dreamy French mime. It was only logical then to place French Mime Obama in some American context with the caption, "Ever feel like you're in the wrong place?" The costume merely amplifies the obvious: regardless of whether he was born in Hawaii or not, Obama is not American in his heart and mind. He looks and feels out of place in any American setting that is not a gathering of snobbish elites, media bubbleheads, or mind-numb leftist radicals. Test this theory by placing him in various American settings of your choice. MORE >>

RJC Applauds Gov. Romney's
Decision to Visit Israel
In trip planned for this summer,
Romney to meet with Prime Minister,
other top leaders
July 2, 2012... The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) applauds Gov. Mitt Romney's decision to visit Israel this summer and meet with Israeli leaders.
RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks said, "Having hosted Gov. Romney on a previous visit to Israel in 2007, the RJC knows firsthand how strong his commitment is to the Jewish homeland and we are thrilled that he will reinforce that commitment at this important time."
Gov. Romney has visited Israel three times in the past. At the RJC's Republican Presidential Candidates Forum in December 2011, Gov. Romney promised to travel to Israel on his first foreign trip as President. He said, "I will reaffirm as a vital national interest Israel's existence as a Jewish state. I want the world to know that the bonds between Israel and the United States are unshakable."
This upcoming visit to Israel illustrates once again the stark difference between Gov. Romney and Pres. Obama, who has yet to visit Israel during his term in office, despite having visited a number of nearby nations not friendly to Israel, including Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

Attacking Israel Online
Throughout the greater Middle East, opposition to the concept and existence of a Jewish state is an idée fixe for hundreds of millions of Arab and non-Arab Muslims. A hatred of Jewish political sovereignty that frequently dovetails with more traditional anti-Semitism animates café discussions and street protests as surely as it prohibits regional political progress. Yet the strand of anti-Zionism that has lately come to attract the most attention in the West is the one articulated by a tiny minority of left-wing Jews at a handful of websites.
Full-time antagonists of Israel such as M.J. Rosenberg, Max Blumenthal, Philip Weiss, and Peter Beinart have accumulated an influence that vastly exceeds their single-digit numbers. This is in part due to the financial sponsorship of successful and well-established media institutions. Until March 2012, Rosenberg was employed by Media Matters for America (MMfA) at a salary of some $130,000 per annum. Weiss was supported for years by the Nation magazine's Nation Institute. Peter Beinart's new Open Zion blog is hosted by the Daily Beast, an online publication jointly owned by the Harman family and the Internet media giant IAC.

Egypt's New Leader Takes Oath, Promising to Work for Release of Jailed Terrorist
June 30, 2012 1:05 pm
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK / The New York Times
CAIRO -- President-elect Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood pre-empted the military's choreographed swearing-in ceremony by taking an oath of office a day early on Friday, in a televised speech to tens of thousands of supporters in Tahrir Square.
But a promise Mr. Morsi made as part of his speech may provoke Washington: to work for the release of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, the Egyptian-born militant Islamist convicted after the 1993 World Trade Center attack of plotting to bomb several New York City landmarks.
Mr. Morsi referred briefly to Mr. Abdel Rahman in an almost offhand aside in the context of a vow to free Egyptian civilians imprisoned here after military trials under the rule of the generals. "I see signs for Omar Abdel Rahman and detainees' pictures," he said. "It is my duty and I will make all efforts to have them free, including Omar Abdel Rahman."

The FBI's investigation of over 100 suspected Islamists serving within the US military highlights the growing threat these undercover jihadists pose to American troops, their families and their military communities.
That growing Islamist danger, according to the FBI, comes from an array of active and reserve military personnel as well as individuals who have work or dependent access to military facilities, such as family members and civilian employees.
Moreover, of the 100 investigative cases, the FBI disclosed that a dozen of them are grave enough to be deemed "insider threats," which it defines as someone planning a terrorist attack on a military base or is in contact with outside individuals who are exhorting them to wage jihad.

Obama Administration's Breathtaking Arrogance on Questions about Inviting a Terrorist to Washington
Friday, 29 June 2012 04:59 Andrew C. McCarthy
The Obama administration recently issued a visa to an Egyptian named Hani Nour Eldin, an operative of a foreign terrorist organization - formally designated as such under U.S. law - so that the administration could consult with the jihadist about Egypt's future under the governance of Eldin's pals at the Muslim Brotherhood. This is not speculation: Eldin brags about being a member of the organization and the administration concedes the visa was issued and the meeting happened.
Outrageous as this sounds, it does not do the outrage justice. The terrorist organization in question, the Islamic Group (Gama'at al Islamia), is the group led by Omar Abdel Rahman, the notorious "Blind Sheikh" currently serving a life sentence in U.S. federal prison for his foundational role in forming the jihadist cell that carried out the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and was later thwarted while attempting simultaneously to bomb several other New York City landmarks. (I handled the case for the United States, back when its government thought jihadists should be prosecuted rather than cultivated.) The Blind Sheikh's cell, essentially, was a U.S. branch of the Islamic Group (IG).
Moreover, the IG has committed numerous atrocities the goal of which has been to extort the United States into releasing the Blind Sheikh from prison. These include the barbaric murders of several dozen tourists in Luxor, Egypt, in 1997. The IG, in conjunction with its allies in al Qaeda, has openly and repeatedly threatened violence against the United States if the Blind Sheikh is not released and repatriated to Egypt. A staple of the Egyptian Arab Spring is the now routine and hostile IG-driven demonstration outside the U.S. embassy to demand the Blind Sheikh's release. So seriously has our government heretofore taken the IG that the Bush Justice Department prosecuted the Blind Sheikh's lawyer, Lynne Stewart, for material support to terrorism over her communication of messages from the Blind Sheikh to IG members in Egypt.
Despite being 70 years old, Stewart was ultimately sentenced to ten years in prison for consulting with and advising the IG. The Obama administration is now doing essentially the same thing Stewart was doing but calling it "foreign policy." The administration is actively aiding and abetting members of a terrorist organization with a hellacious record of violence and threats of violence against the United States. That is not just a departure from American policy against negotiating with terrorists; it is a serious violation of federal law.

Egypt notified Israel two months ago that it would be "impossible to hold the annual ceremony because of the political and security situation in the country," the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said. Wednesday's announcement came as Muslim Brotherhood activists mobilized to block the pilgrimage route. Read more...
Posted by P. David Hornik on Jun 28th, 2012 Not long ago the Arab Spring was seen as a harbinger of democracy. It turns out that, instead, it's creating breeding grounds for international terror-and safe havens for al-Qaeda itself. That is not just a polemical opinion but the somber assessment of the director-general of Britain's MI5 internal security agency, Jonathan Evans. The Telegraph reports that Evans, in a rare lecture this week in London, warned that: Today parts of the Arab world have once more become a permissive environment for al-Qaeda. This is the completion of a cycle-al-Qaeda first moved to Afghanistan in the 1990s due to pressure in their Arab countries of origin. They moved on to Pakistan after the fall of the Taliban. And now some are heading home to the Arab world again.... Evans specifically said that British jihadis, who have been training for years at al-Qaeda strongholds in Yemen and Somalia, "are known to be receiving training in the likes of Libya and Egypt"-supposed beneficiaries of what some saw as a wave of Facebook-driven liberalization. The MI5 chief also confirmed that al-Qaeda is now active in Syria, and "warned against suggestions that al-Qaeda's threat has 'evaporated' following the death of Osama bin Laden and significant victories in Pakistan." He noted that Britain, for its part, has "experienced a credible terrorist attack plot about once a year since 9/11." Evans didn't say in what part of Egypt the jihadis are training. Israel, though, has been aware that-particularly since the winds of "spring" toppled Egypt's pro-Western Mubarak regime-the presence of al-Qaeda and other global-jihad elements has been rapidly growing at least in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. It was only last week that what is believed to be an al-Qaeda-linked group carried out a deadly attack at the fence Israel is trying to build quickly along its border with Sinai. But Evans's words carry implications beyond the region and beyond Britain's own very real security concerns. For one thing, his point that bin Laden's assassination (along with the killing of other terror leaders in Pakistan) has hardly finished off al-Qaeda tends to undercut the great emphasis President Obama has put on that exploit. Too Many Broken Promises in Obamacare
Yesterday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) almost called Obamacare's individual mandate a tax, stopping mid-word to call it a "penalty". White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew and other spokespersons echoed this talking point. This is in spite of last week's Supreme Court ruling that deemed the mandate unconstitutional under both the Commerce Clause and the Necessary and Proper Clause, but ruled that it could stand as part of Congress's authority to "lay and collect taxes." Dubbing the individual mandate a tax saved the President's health care law, but it's a concept that President Obama himself has strongly denied. In a 2009 interview, President Obama argued that his individual mandate was not a tax increase, stating, "I absolutely reject that notion." But after last week, President Obama must now admit it's a tax or admit the mandate is unconstitutional. It's can only be one or the other. The mandate is in fact a tax, and it's just one of many new taxes that hit the middle class in Obamacare. Lo and behold, another broken promise. President Obama claims that the mandate is holding people responsible, keeping with that spirit, here's a reminder of the other promises the President and his health care law are responsible for breaking: Promise #1: "Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase." Reality: The individual mandate is far from alone on Heritage's lengthy list of Obamacare's new taxes and penalties, many of which will heavily impact the middle class. Altogether, Obamacare's taxes and penalties will accumulate an additional $500 billion in new revenue over a 10-year period. Yesterday, a senior economist for The Wall Street Journal revealed that 75 percent of Obamacare's new taxes will be paid for by American families making under $120,000 a year. Among the taxes that will hit the middle class are the individual mandate, a 2.3 percent excise tax on medical devices, a 10 percent excise tax on indoor tanning, and an increase of the floor on medical deductions from 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income to 10 percent. Promise #2: "If you like your health care plan, you'll be able to keep your health care plan, period." Reality: Research continues to show that as many as 30 percent of employers will dump their employees from their existing health care coverage. The Administration itself has admitted that "as a practical matter, a majority of group health plans will lose their grandfather status by 2013." Promise #3: "I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits-either now or in the future." Reality: As Heritage analysts explain, "A close examination of what [the Congressional Budget Office] said, as well as other evidence, makes it clear that the deficit reduction associated with [Obamacare] is based on budget gimmicks, sleights of hand, accounting tricks, and completely implausible assumptions. A more honest accounting reveals the new law as a trillion-dollar budget buster." Promise #4: "I will protect Medicare." Reality: A Heritage Factsheet shows the various ways Obamacare ends Medicare as we know it, including severe physician reimbursement cuts that threaten seniors' access to care and putting an unelected board of bureaucrats in charge of meeting Medicare's new spending cap. Promise #5: "I will sign a universal health care bill into law by the end of my first term as president that will cover every American and cut the cost of a typical family's premium by up to $2,500 a year." Reality: Obamacare does not accomplish universal coverage; it leaves 26 million Americans without insurance. Moreover, Heritage research outlines 12 ways that Obamacare will increase premiums instead of reducing health care costs. Requirements that plans allow young adults to stay on their parents' coverage and offer preventive services with no cost sharing are already leading to higher growth in premiums. When polled, 70 percent of Americans held an unfavorable view of the individual mandate. It's doubtful that calling it a "tax" will dramatically change their opinion. Now that Obamacare and its broken promises remain the law of the land, it's up to the American people to see to it that the law is ultimately repealed by Congress. Then, they can move forward with real reform that puts patients' needs first.

The U K's "Death Panels" are killing old and sick there, Obamacare won't be any different here
Jul 02, 2012 06:13 am | Coach Collins
By Kevin "Coach" Collins
Obamacare-like "Death Panels" are already emptying out hospital beds in the United Kingdom. According to one report last year the UK's National Health Service (NHS) euthanized 130,000, mostly expendable seniors. Its benignly named "Care Pathways", kills almost 360 people every day.
Now it's Obamcare's turn to euthanize undesirables. The Supreme Court gave Barack Obama the right to start his own extermination program. Anybody who needs "a little bit too much care" will get put on Obama's list. If you were born before January 1, 1953 he has put a target on your back. You had better not get sick and you had better pray someone derails Obamcare's euthanasia train before a "Death Panel" gavel comes down on your life. When Obama's verdict is death for you there can be no appeal - that's in the bill.
This system needs your death to appear to work. That is the reality of ... Continue Reading:The U K's "Death Panels" are killing old and sick there, Obamacare won't be any different here

Four degrees of separation: Hillary to Huma Abedin to Saleha Mahmoud Abedin, to Muslim Brotherhood
Jul 01, 2012 01:13 pm | Coach Collins
By Kevin "Coach" Collins
In 2007 a staffer for Hillary Clinton came to the attention of Washington's wagging tongues. She was darkly exotic and seemed to be thisclose to Hillary not only in her Washington office but when they went on road trips. Her name was Huma Abedin a Muslim with very close familial connections to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.
Their especially close relationship begged many questions.
Among those raising questions about the relationship was Michael Musto a Village Voice columnist who writes about gay issues. Musto speculated as to whether Hillary Clinton might have been increasing Huma's visibility to head off rumors of a lesbian affair by using some reverse psychology on the media. "If she is not hiding Abedin than there's nothing going on," the thinking went.
Other questions were raised about Huma Abedin. "Is the fact that Huma was never seen twice in the same designer outfit and lived in a $649,000 ... Continue Reading:Four degrees of separation: Hillary to Huma Abedin to Saleha Mahmoud Abedin, to Muslim Brotherhood

Government
Meet the newest "tax."
"[A]t the risk of being a broken record [on ObamaCare], we remain focused on the wrong issue because conservatives and Republicans do not want any part of the right issue. Congress would not be able to tax anyone a penny if the subject matter on which lawmakers sought to spend the money raised was not within Congress's constitutional authority to address. Health care and health insurance are precisely such issues. So why does Congress get to raise taxes for and spend money on them? Because the country -- very much including Republican leaders and many conservatives -- has bought on to the wayward progressive premise that the General Welfare Clause of the Constitution empowers Congress to spend on anything it wants to spend on as long as their is some fig-leaf that ties the spending to the betterment of society. That, and not an inflated understanding of the Commerce Clause, has always been the problem. Republicans are afraid to touch this because, if you follow the logic, you'd have to conclude that Congress has no constitutional authority to set up a social security system, a Medicare or Medicaid program, or most to the innumerable Big Government enterprises that Republicans support while, of course, decrying Big Government. Republicans occasionally want to limit what government spends, but they don't want to acknowledge any constitutional limits on what government could spend -- that's what has gotten us to this point." --columnist and former DoJ attorney Andrew McCarthy
Share your thoughts on the real issue with ObamaCare.
Essential Liberty
"In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision upholding the constitutionality of Obamacare, the principal choice now facing Americans on November 6 will be whether to keep Obamacare or to repeal it. The question is a binary one, and the answer -- expressed almost entirely through their presidential vote -- will go a long way toward determining the future course of this great nation. Yes, the economy is extremely important; and, yes, Obamacare is hurting the economy. But the reason why this election is the most important since the Civil War is not because Mitt Romney would make a far better steward of the economy than President Obama (though he would). Rather, it's because we are about to decide whether to put what will soon be one-fifth of our economy under the control of the federal government; whether to funnel previously unthinkable amounts of power and money to Washington; and whether this nation conceived in liberty will continue to prioritize liberty. It is understandable why President Obama has no interest in framing this election as a referendum on Obamacare. His party already suffered perhaps its worst defeat since the 19th century thanks to his centerpiece legislation. With the Supreme Court's ruling now behind him, he will have even less incentive to remind voters about Obamacare going forward. As far as he's concerned, the less the American people think about it, the better." --columnist Jeffrey H. Anderson
Political Futures
"Twenty new or higher taxes across-the-board [in ObamaCare] are bad for economic growth, bad for job hiring, bad for investors, and bad for families. A tax is a tax is a tax, according to Judge Roberts. But he forgot to say that if you tax something more, you get less of it. Presumably Mitt Romney will make this case in a major way. Hopefully he won't forget that Obamacare is not just a huge tax hike. It's also a major new spending entitlement that's already pegged at $2.5 trillion and will increase the federal debt burden much faster than the GDP expands. In other words, tax, spend, regulate, borrow. The Obama mantra. Romney must go after it -- time and time and time again. Bankrupting the economy is not exactly a job-creator." --economist Larry Kudlow
Opinion in Brief
"[Chief Justice John] Roberts' concern was that the court do everything it could to avoid being seen, rightly or wrongly, as high-handedly overturning sweeping legislation passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the president. How to reconcile the two imperatives -- one philosophical and the other institutional? Assign yourself the task of writing the majority opinion. Find the ultimate finesse that manages to uphold the law, but only on the most narrow of grounds -- interpreting the individual mandate as merely a tax, something generally within the power of Congress. Result? The law stands, thus obviating any charge that a partisan court overturned duly passed legislation. And yet at the same time the Commerce Clause is reined in. By denying that it could justify the imposition of an individual mandate, Roberts draws the line against the inexorable decades-old expansion of congressional power under the Commerce Clause fig leaf. Law upheld, Supreme Court's reputation for neutrality maintained. Commerce Clause contained, constitutional principle of enumerated powers reaffirmed. That's not how I would have ruled. I think the 'mandate is merely a tax' argument is a dodge, and a flimsy one at that. ... Perhaps that's not how Roberts would have ruled had he been just an associate justice, and not the chief. But that's how he did rule. Obamacare is now essentially upheld. There's only one way it can be overturned. The same way it was passed -- elect a new president and a new Congress." --columnist Charles Krauthammer

"One of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people has been by way of medicine. It's very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project. Most people are a little reluctant to oppose anything that suggests medical care for people who possibly can't afford it. ... [L]et's also look from the other side. The freedom the doctor uses. ... First you decide the doctor can have so many patients. They are equally divided among the various doctors by the government, but then the doctors are equally divided geographically, so a doctor decides he wants to practice in one town and the government has to say to him he can't live in that town, they already have enough doctors. You have to go some place else. And from here it is only a short step to dictating where he will go. This is a freedom I wonder if any of us has a right to take from any human being. ... All of us can see what happens once you establish the precedent that the government can determine a man's working place and his working methods -- determine his employment." --Ronald Reagan
Re: The Left
"[Thursday], the Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for his failure to provide subpoenaed documents to the Congressional Committee investigating the Fast and Furious gun-walking scandal. ... In an interview with the New York Times last December, the Attorney General claimed the 'more extreme segment' of his numerous critics were really after the president and that he served as a viable substitute. 'This is a way to get at the president because of the way I can be identified with him,' he said, 'both due to the nature of our relationship and, you know, the fact that we're both African-American.' ... It is worth remembering that less than one month after he began serving as Attorney General Holder also called American 'a nation of cowards' regarding racial matters. All of this calculated odiousness regarding race is designed to obscure reality. ... Every effort to get at the truth has been stonewalled, first by the Attorney General, and now by president Obama himself, who issued an executive order to keep a lid on the worst government scandal since Watergate. Racism? Tell that to the parents of slain border agent Brian Terry. ... Is it racist to want to know who is ultimately responsible for their son's death? How about the Mexican civilians? Since most of them are non-white, why isn't the effort to suppress information regarding their murders -- numbering in the hundreds -- considered racist? ... Quite simply, these are American leftists who prefer protecting the careers of one or more high-level government officials, over bringing some kind of closure -- as in justice -- to hundreds of families whose lives have been shattered by bureaucratic malfeasance at best, and outright criminality at worst. And they're willing to play the race card to do it. Shame on every one of them." --columnist Arnold Ahlert

"Deep down, Obama supposes that if he says something entirely opposite from what he once said, or something so preposterous that it cannot possibly be true, or calls the Falkland Islands the Maldives, no journalist would dare to press him on the disconnect -- given the possible harm to the liberal agenda of our first African-American president. But after nearly four years, the game is about up. If the president lectures the Europeans with another 'make no mistake about it,' they will assume there are lots of mistakes about it. If he says 'in point of fact' to Vladimir Putin, then Putin can be sure there are no facts at all. If Obama addresses the American people with 'let me be perfectly clear,' then they assume he most certainly will be anything but transparent and concise. And if Obama compares a current event to one in his own past, then we can be sure that the earlier event never took place. ... What Barack Obama wants to be true, he says to be true; and we lesser folk can sweat the details when it is usually not." --historian Victor Davis Hanson

Good News -- What Good News? By Victor Davis Hanson
Here are six reasons why there's no good news to be found in Obama's ongoing crackup. After all, we have a man in the White House who has set presidential records for golf outings and fat-cat fundraisers, while running on them/us class warfare -- to the delight of 50 percent of the country.

Conservatives to Mitt: Quit Now If You Won't Fight Obamatax!
by Joel B. Pollak
The Obama campaign has seized on remarks made by Romney adviser Eric "Etch-A-Sketch" Fehrnstrom this morning on MSNBC, to the effect that the individual mandate in Obamacare (and Romneycare) is not a tax. Fehrnstrom allowed Chuck Todd to push him off message--and re-ignited the fears that conservatives have long had about Romney's will and ability to fight. In response, conservatives--who had just coalesced around opposition to what many now call "Obamatax": Mitt, start fighting, or give up and let someone else do it.
Fehrnstrom's point--in defense of Romneycare--was that the Supreme Court was wrong to uphold Obamacare under the taxing power. The individual mandate was never intended to be a tax, Congress never called it a tax, and it wasn't a tax in Massachusetts, either. Fine--but now that Obama's lawyers went to court and called it a tax, and Chief Justice John Roberts called it a tax (and spare us the non-distinction between "tax" and the "taxing power") Obamacare is, undeniably, a massive tax on the middle class. Obama lied. It's that simple.

UK's Death Panels Kill, Obamacare Won't Be Different

Obamacare-like "Death Panels" are already emptying out hospital beds in the United Kingdom. Will The Last American Please Turn Off The Light When He Leaves GrassTopsUSA Exclusive Commentary By Don Feder 07/02/2012 In 1939, Hollywood gave us Henry Fonda in "Young Mr. Lincoln," a gentle but compelling portrait of our 16th president as a frontier lawyer. The following year, Raymond Massey won an Oscar for his title role in "Abe Lincoln In Illinois." Now playing, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," which presents the Great Emancipator as a cross between Professor Van Helsing and the Amazing Spiderman. Hollywood of the Golden Age was optimistic, reverent, patriotic and romantic. Hollywood of the Dross Age is nihilistic, cynical, violent, sex-saturated and anti-American. Four things happened last week - the week before our country's 236th birthday - that illustrate America's rapid descent and call into question how many 4th of Julys we have left. One - Chief Justice John Roberts betrayed the Constitution and America by joining the Gang of Four (the Supreme Court's hard left bloc) to uphold Obamacare, under Congress' power to tax. Thanks to Roberts, in the future, Washington can compel us to do virtually anything - buy hybrid cars, stop eating fatty foods, put solar panels on our houses. All it has to do to make it pass constitutional muster is to threaten to fine us. Since a fine is now a tax, voila it falls under Congress' taxing power. The decision in NFIB v. Sebelius didn't kill the Constitution, but further enabled a government which couldn't have been imagined even 50 years ago. When a case comes before them, most federal judges first decide on the outcome they want, then rationalize it based on a highly imaginative reading of the Constitution, the Magna Carta or the Code of Hammurabi. Two - In an interview with NPR, Marine Commandant Gen. James Amos (the only service chief who publicly opposed repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell) said if a homosexual Marine wanted to bring his "partner" to a Marine Corps ball, "I'm fine with it." From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of LGBT? August will mark the 70th anniversary of the Marines landing on Guadalcanal, the first engagement in the island-hopping campaign of World War II. In six months of bitter fighting, 11 Medals of Honor were awarded, 5 posthumously. Almost 1,600 soldiers and Marines fell on The Canal. Today, the Marine Corps is just another casualty of the culture war. Three - Attorney General Eric Holder became the first sitting member of a president's cabinet to be held in contempt of Congress, for trying to cover up Fast and Furious, the operation where the BATF provided 2,500 guns to Mexican drug cartels to prove that we need tighter gun control. The guns were used to commit 200 murders in Mexico, as well as the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent. Holder's stonewalling is what you'd expect from the most lawless administration in our history. The president refuses to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (violating his duty to "take care that the laws be faithfully executed"). He created a blanket amnesty for up to one million illegal aliens, something that just months ago he said he didn't have the power to do. He refuses to defend our borders, then sues states for doing the job he won't do. This year, he and Holder have launched an all-out-offensive against states that are trying to prevent election fraud with voter ID laws. Obama rules by executive order, scorns our Judeo-Christian heritage, panders to Islam, is responsible for the three biggest deficits in our history (the only deficits in excess of $1 trillion), has had an increase in unemployment on his watch (despite massive stimulus spending), and pushes collectivism at every opportunity - and he's running from 1 to 5 points ahead of Romney in almost every poll. In a sane nation, his standing in the polls would be even with the candidate of the Socialist Workers Party, which, in a way, he is. Four - The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) urged its local offices to have parties to encourage more people to sign up for food stamps. ("Throw a great party. Host a special event where people mix and mingle!") SNAP is also spending $2.5 million for radio ads, to encourage more dependency. Food stamp spending has doubled under Obama, who nevertheless is haunted by the fear that somewhere in this fair land, someone who qualifies for the program isn't enrolled. In the 1970s, one in 50 Americans was getting food stamps. Today, it's one in 7 - 46.4 million. Welfare spending is the health of the Democrat Party. Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow our economy will collapse. As of June 30, the National Debt was $15.78 trillion, $5 trillion of that added by the man who solemnly promised nothing but balanced budgets, as a candidate. From 2007 to 2010, the nation's GDP grew by 4.26%, while the National Debt exploded by 61%. The Debt is growing by $2 million a minute. Each year, the federal workforce alone costs approximately $447 billion - and Obama thinks the public sector is starving. The dole also rises. In 1980, not that long ago by human reckoning, transfer payments accounted for 11.7% of all income in the United States. Today, it's 18.4%. Now, 59% of all Americans receive money from Washington, in one form or another. Libertarian slogan from the 1970s: "A welfare state is what happens when government of the people and for the people, buys the people." But to call attention to this massive wealth redistribution is to mark one as a member of the 1% plutocracy. Moral bankruptcy always precedes fiscal bankruptcy. In the Land of the Free, children are being killed in utero at the rate of two or three a minute - 1.2 million a year. Since Roe v. Wade, more than 55 million Americans have died before they were born -- summarily executed in the name of choice. A woman can choose to have her unborn child killed, but soon won't be able to buy popcorn at the movies in New York City. In his memoirs, the author of Roe admitted that a privacy right lurking in a so-called penumbra of the First Amendment was a handy invention. As of 2009, 41% of children born in the United States were out-of-wedlock. That year, it was estimated that 40% of all marriages will end in divorce. In 2010, Time magazine happily reported that 39% think marriage is obsolete (up from 28% in 1978). In 1960, 72% of adult Americans were married, compared to about half in 2008. Each year, Americans spend $12 billion on Internet pornography and 19 million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases are reported. There are 12.8 million Americans who are classified as regular drug users, while 36 million have tried cocaine. Based on his 30-year study of the life cycles of civilizations - including Babylon, Egypt, Greece and Rome - historian Arnold Toynbee warned: "Civilizations die from suicide, not murder," and "Of the 22 civilizations that have appeared in history, 19 of them have collapsed when they reached the moral state the United States is in now." He made that observation in the early 1970s. In "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," Gibbon identified five reasons why the glory that was Rome is of another day.
1. The rapid increase of divorce which weakened the family, the foundation of society 2. A tax burden which crushed the middle class to pay for free food for the plebs and "entertainment" to keep them docile - or bread and circuses (One emperor imported grain from Egypt to feed 100,000 in Rome alone.) 3. The pursuit of pleasure as life's highest ambition. Increasingly violent gladiatorial contests. 4. Legions assigned to vague missions. Barbarians at the gates, who were eventually incorporated into the empire and then overthrew it. 5. The decline of religion - ceremonies without substance. Religion that surrendered its role of guiding the nation's destiny.
|
Historian Will Durant, author of the 11-volume "Story of Civilization," essentially agreed with both Toynbee and Gibbon. "A great nation is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself within. The essential causes of Rome's decline lay in her people, her morals, her class struggle, her failing trade, her bureaucratic despotism, her stifling taxes (and) her consuming wars." We've got it all, and then some - almost 1 in 2 marriages ending in divorce (add the devaluation of marriage by the legalization of ersatz unions), the highest effective corporate tax rate in the world, dulling our senses with mindless entertainment (60-inch plasma TVs, iphones , "American Idol," "Dancing With The Stars"), the ideology that animates the barbarians at our gates honored as the "religion of peace," and traditional religion on skids. According to the Francis Schaeffer Institute, every year in America, 1,000 churches open and 4,000 close their doors. Milestones in our cultural death-march include the 1963 school-prayer decision, Roe v. Wade, our growing energy dependence, the abandonment of our allies (from the Shah to Mubarak), a very selective War on Terrorism (some get drones, others get subsides), raw carnality on display on cable television, in the movies and on the Internet, public schools and higher education that imperil our national existence, purging religion from our public life, news media that indoctrinate, porous borders, and exchanging self-government for rule by emperors in black robes. Given how far gone we are, is there any reason to keep fighting? At the dedication of a cemetery at the Civil War's bloodiest battlefield, Lincoln urged the citizens of a war-weary Union to stay the course ("that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion"). Therefore, "We highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain." Do we want all of our war dead - from Bunker Hill to Kabul - to have died in vain? Will the sacrifices of our veterans, of the Pilgrims, the pioneers, and those who labored on farms and sweated in factories mean nothing in the long-run? Are we to give up without a fight because our future looks increasingly dim - due to the dimwits in public office and the sheep who put them there? If so, then, as Mr. Lincoln prophesied, the American idea of one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all surely will "perish from this earth," and humanity will enter a Dark Age more savage and terrifying than the one which followed the fall of Rome.

U.S. Manufacturing Shrinking Again
Posted: 02 Jul 2012 11:32 AM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
In more grim economic news, the Associated Press reported today that U.S. manufacturing output shrank in June for the first time since 2009:
U.S. manufacturing shrank in June for the first time in nearly three years, adding to signs that economic growth is weakening.
Production declined, and the number of new orders plunged, according to a monthly report released Monday by the Institute for Supply Management. ...
The trade group of purchasing managers said its index of manufacturing activity fell to 49.7. That's down from 53.5 in May. And it's the lowest reading since July 2009, a month after the Great Recession officially ended. Readings below 50 indicate contraction. ...
Economists said the manufacturing figures were consistent with growth at an annual rate of 1.5 percent or less. That would be down from the January-March quarter's already tepid annual pace of 1.9 percent.
All of these numbers are simply dreadful. This chart shows U.S. GDP growth from 2000 through 2011. If we add a mere 1.5% growth for 2012, we can see that at best, the U.S. is experiencing a pathetic recovery from a deep recession:
We are currently in fourth year of the Obama administration; to make one obvious comparison, GDP growth in Ronald Reagan's fourth year in office was 7.3%. Worst case, we are sliding into another recession. We have been focused for the past few days, understandably, on the Supreme Court's disappointing Obamacare decision. But let's not lose sight of the bigger picture: President Obama's record in office is terrible, worse than that of any president who has been re-elected in modern times.

The Obamacare decision as the "Compromise of 2012"? - let's hope not
Posted: 02 Jul 2012 09:26 AM PDT
(Paul Mirengoff)
Rumor has it that Chief Justice Roberts changed his vote in the Obamacare case. Even if he did, that leaves open the question of why. Most observers think he changed it for political reasons. For example Charles Lane compares Roberts' decision to the Compromise of 1850 about which Roberts wrote as a student in an award winning history paper on Daniel Webster. But it is also possible that Roberts changed his mind because he came to believe the arguments set forth in his opinion which, though wrong in my view, are not far-fetched.
When it comes to Roberts' motive, this is another case of "those who say don't know and those who know don't say."
But if Roberts was attempting to craft a political compromise, then he engaged in an act of gross judicial immodesty that is improper and foolish.
First, Roberts is a judge, not a Senator like Webster, Henry Clay, and the others who worked out the Compromise of 1850. Roberts was not nominated and confirmed to craft political compromises. He was nominated and confirmed to decide cases based on the merits and, as Chief Justice, to engage in various ancillary and administrative chores.
Second, any analogy to 1850 is inapt. America isn't headed toward civil war. The left would have howled if Obamacare had been struck down, but it wouldn't have seceded. Health care is an important issue, of course, but it isn't slavery. If Roberts had 1850 and Daniel Webster on his mind, he was suffering from delusions of grandeur.
Third, Charles Lane and others talk about the respect Roberts supposedly has won for the Supreme Court (a strange new respect?). But most observers see this decision as either dreadful or political (or both). Where is the respect in that? Most conservatives are disgusted. And, though most liberals are happy now, they will be back to attacking Roberts and the Court the next time he's part of a majority in a big case that doesn't go their way - assuming that this scenario is still part of our future.
Fourth, no one knows what the effect of the Roberts compromise (if that's what it was) will be. As Lane points out, the Compromise of 1850 was undermined by the divisive Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Dred Scott decision.
Judges aren't competent to predict the future, and that includes the political impact of their rulings. This is true even of Justices who consider themselves the smartest person in the room.
A judicially modest judge understands that his proper role is to decide the case before him on the merits; to be the umpire, as Roberts put it so well during his confirmation hearing. An umpire doesn't worry about how his call affects the game, and neither should a judge.
Again, I don't know whether Roberts violated this, his own teaching in the Obamacare case, and I don't assume he did. But if Charles Lane, Charles Krauthammer, and others are correct, then Roberts deserves the strongest condemnation.

Lew's Law
Posted: 02 Jul 2012 04:26 AM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
Yesterday John wrote about the appearance of Obama chief of staff Jacob Lew on Fox News Sunday. Lew did not simply deny that that the Supreme Court upheld Obamacare on the ground that the individual mandate is a tax. He would't even concede that the Supreme Court so held (wrongly, in my opinion) because the lawyer representing the government in the case asserted that it was.
When Chris Wallace plays the clip from Solicitor General Donald Verrilli making the relevant point during the oral argument before the Court, you can see the gorge rising in Lew's face. He is angry at being shown up as a liar, yet it does not deter him in the least. He continues to cite the government's Commerce Clause power, as though it had not been rejected by the Court. You really have to see this.
Whether or not the individual mandate was upheld on the ground that it could be construed as a tax, the Solicitor General of the United States argued that it was one on behalf of the government. In other words, Obama argued that it was. Obama cannot now deny properly deny the argument made on his behalf before the Court. If Obama disagreed with the argument, he could have instructed the Solicitor General not to make it. It seems to me that this is the essential point of the exchange, and that not even Wallace quite understands or makes it.
The tax argument advanced by the Solicitor General and adopted by Chief Justice Roberts in his opinion for the Court is, as Professor Randy Barnett observes, "transparently lame." It was essentially a throwaway argument.
There is a reason why the Solicitor General made so little of the argument in the case: it is a weak argument. It is weaker even than the Commerce Clause argument on which the administration staked its case. Nevertheless, Obama cannot properly disavow what he himself asserted through the Solicitor General before the Court.
I believe that every point that Lew makes in response to Wallace's questions is false. From this interview we can deduce Lew's Law: Obama can and will say anything in pursuit of his reelection, counting on his ability to put one over on the American people one more time. Watching Lew, I think we would be well advised to strap on our seat belts for the turbulence ahead.

Green Weenie of the Week: The DC Circuit Court of Appeals
Posted: 01 Jul 2012 08:13 PM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
The Supreme Court wasn't the only court to botch a case last week. Way back on Tuesday, the DC Circuit Court of Appeals upheld, by a unanimous vote, the EPA's proposed regulation of greenhouse gases. The appellants had challenged the EPA's "endangerment finding" that greenhouse gases are a threat to public health, and unsurprisingly deferred to the EPA's "expertise": "we give an extreme degree of deference to the agency when it is evaluating scientific data within its technical expertise."
That's one of the key problems with our administrative state-the judiciary lets the agencies get away with murder, few more so than the EPA. The standard for judicial "strict scrutiny" of a regulatory agency "finding" is whether it is "arbitrary and capricious," which is a high bar to reach. Too bad the courts can't develop a standard of "self-serving and meretricious," which might actually slow up the EPA once and a while.
Our friends at the Science and Environmental Policy Project walk through the court's opinion and flag everything that is wrong with it. And so the DC Circuit Court of Appeals wins last week's coveted Power Line Green Weenie of the Week Award (ironically delayed to today due to power supply problems, which will become more common if the EPA has its way).

What is the path to reducing poverty, income redistribution and government programs, or free enterprise? This video from the Center for Freedom and Prosperity has some good data and does a good job of explaining the basics:

Rasmussen: Conservative Anger Over Obamacare Hitting 'Stratospheric Levels'
(News Max) - Conservative interest in the presidential election hit "stratospheric levels" following last week's Supreme Court ruling upholding Obamacare, noted pollster and author Scott Rasmussen tells Newsmax.TV."All that did was energize conservatives," declared Rasmussen in an exclusive interview on Monday. "The conservative interest in the election was already much higher than that of moderates and liberals. It went up to really stratospheric levels right after the ruling. We don't know if that will continue or if it's just a temporary response to the news cycle."
Most importantly, he said, Republicans have to make the case that the unpopular Obamacare will be a further drain on America's disappointing economic recovery since the economy still tops the list of voter concerns.

The Roberts rewrite: A fitting save for Obamacare
TIMOTHY P. CARNEY - Chief Justice John Roberts' judicial sleight of hand, transforming Obamacare's mandate into a tax, was a fittingly twisted save for a law of such grisly provenance. Muslim mob assaults Christians in Dearborn, Michigan
For the past few years, some Christians who attended the Arab festival in Dearborn, Michigan, have encountered vicious verbal abuse, in at least one case a physical assault, and some of the Christians have even been arrested! The good news is, the arrests have been thrown out. Now, in the shocking video below, a Muslim mob vents its anti-Christian rage in a modern version of stoning. They throw eggs, water bottles, and other projectiles at a small group of Christians holding signs at this public event. In effect, the Muslim mob wants to make this public event a "Muslim only" event-a version of the "no-go zones" prevalent in France. The police do virtually nothing to restrain the Muslim assailants. In fact, near the end of the video you'll see the police threatening the Christians with disorderly conduct! The police position is that the Christians are endangering public safety by saying things that are enraging the Muslim mob. The message is clear-it's not the violence that endangers public safety, it's free speech that the mob wants to silence that endangers public safety. Similar Muslim mob violence has occurred in Europe and the UK. Now it's here.

CBS report says Justice Roberts changed his mind on Obamacare Apparently Chief Justice John Roberts initially sided with those who sought to strike down the individual mandate. After his flip, the more conservative Justices tried to bring him back from the dark side. Ironically, the more liberal Justice Kennedy led the charge in trying to save Roberts from an embarrassing decision. A valiant effort, but it appears nothing could have saved Roberts from his disastrous decision. Get the interesting details on the CBS report HERE. Pelosi: Obamacare is a ta--- uh, it's a penalty for free riders For someone who claims 'The Word' is her favorite word, she really says a lot of words that contradict the values and principles spoken in 'The Word' she claims to love. For example, the truth: Obamacare is a tax. The Supreme Court said so. Obama's own legal team argued it was. So why can't Pelosi bring herself to admit it? Pro-Obamacare protesters: yeah, healthcare should be free The Blaze has video from protesters in front of the Supreme Court last Thursday explaining why they want Obamacare. Interestingly, they all celebrated 'free healthcare' - which is really weird because Nancy Pelosi seemed to be deriding these 'free riders' over the weekend.
