Activate: How to turn the 2012 election from a close call to a mandate

Last night, Glenn focused on the importance of commitment. He was the first to admit, a lot of last night's show was something you had heard before - but it's important to start at the beginning and to make sure you know what you believe before you get put into action. And tonight, Glenn revealed ways for you to really get moving!
Tonight, the focus of the show was "Activate" - and it was all about the election and how you can make sure that one way or another - 2012 is a year for a mandate for or against the progressives. And if you think it doesn't matter just take a look at what is happening right now in Wisconsin. Progressives and unions are doing everything they can to make sure that Walker loses. It's a microcosm to what is happening around the country, and Glenn thought it was so important that he recapped it on tonight's show (in under three minutes!):
U.S. Police Encourage Muslims To 'Stone' Christians At Public Event
Ok, for those who still think Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance, take a look at this year's Muslim Arab Festival. This went on in America people! It happened in Dearborn, Michigan. Notice how the police see the quiet restrained Christians as a threat to public safety, while the bratty little Muslim kids assault them with milk crates, glass bottles, eggs and whatever they can find.
The police are complicit in the behavior of the Muslims at the festival. They encourage their rioting and their provocation.
Report: 3rd largest natural gas reserves on East Coast are in Bucks, Montgomery counties
Author: Jaccii Farris

Report says there's gas to drill for in Bucks Co.
NOCKAMIXON TWP., Pa. -
Bucks and Montgomery counties are sitting on the 3rd largest natural gas reserves on the East Coast, according to a new report by the U.S. Geological Survey.
The report now has residents and environmental activists worried what will happen should gas companies start drilling
Nancy Alessi, a Nockamixon Township supervisor, said the recent report will be a magnet for drilling companies.
"We know drilling is going to come here. We had it in the past," said Alessi.
A gas well was being drilled on the former Cabot Chemical property in the 1980s, but it's been abandoned for years.
But because of Act 13, passed in February, should the moratorium on drilling in the Delaware Water Basin be lifted, municipalities like Nockamixon will have no say in where drilling can happen, Alessi said, so Nockamixon is suing to get Act 13 voided.
Communist Party: Obama's Reelection is 'Absolutely Essential'
The Blaze | by Mytheos Holt | Posted on June 28, 2012 at 8:09am
For reasons we at the Blaze have never fully found persuasive, it has long been considered bad form to accuse President Obama of communist or socialist sympathies, even in the most roundabout way.
Yet what happens when the communists themselves sympathize with him? We have not yet been handed our official protocol on that from the mainstream media. Whatever shall we do?
In this case, most likely laugh after we've silenced the feeling of queasiness brought about by this story. You see, while President Obama doesn't claim to be a communist, certainly communists seem to be in a hurry to get him reelected. John Case, a writer at People's World, one of the official web organs of the Communist Party, has made precisely that case. You may be surprised to learn that his reasoning is, though, the reverse of Glenn Beck's reasoning for supporting Mitt Romney. To quote Beck on Romney, "At least he's not a commy."
In short: We can't vote for Romney because he's not a commy.
Welcome to the fortress of free speech. The New IQ 106.9 FM is the Delaware Valley's new ho me for Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck. Hidden beyond the reach of big government and corporate media in an abandoned power plant in Fishtown, IQ 106.9 is fair and balanced, not live and liberal.

Let's get together and talk about our next steps as we get ready to take out Barack Obama and Bob Casey this Fall! After a very well attended Get Out The Vote training day in Bucks County in early June, we are now ready to put into practice all the tools we learned from FreedomWorks.
We all came together back in 2009 because we were outraged by the election of Barack Obama, the passage of Obamacare and the direction of our country financially and ideologically. The time has come, perhaps our last chance to truly make a stance, for us to unite and work to defeat the progressive agenda which has already infiltrated us so deeply. The first step towards a big win in November starts now! So, we, at The Kitchen Table Patriots, urge you to come out to make a difference, we can plug you in where you are needed.
This is where you can make a difference that really matters!

While plans for school vouchers remain mired in the General Assembly, some lawmakers are supporting a new idea to help kids in failing schools. Rep. Jim Christiana, R-Beaver, is introducing a bill that would create a $100 million tax credit program aimed at children in poor-performing schools. The bill to create the new Educational Improvement Scholarship Credit will be introduced today in the House of Representatives. The program would try to build on the state's $75 million Educational Improvement Tax Credit program. That program grants tax credit to companies that donate to preschool and K-12 scholarships to students or to innovative public education programs. Tax credits for this program typically are spoken for in a matter of days after they become available. The new tax credit program would be limited to companies donating to organizations that provide scholarships to students in the state's worst-performing schools. In Christiana's plan as well as the existing EITC program, businesses donating to scholarship organizations could cut their state taxes by up to 90 cents on every dollar donated to education. The goal of Christiana's plan is to generate enough money to provide an escape for 30,000 low- and middle-income students in failing public schools. His plan would provide scholarships of up to $8,500 for a regular education student and up to $15,000 for a special-needs student. "I think it is a very attractive program to those that want to help these kids get out of the violent underperforming schools," Christiana said. Support for a new education tax credit is evolving among House Republican leaders. "I think it's definitely something we should do," said House Majority Whip Stan Saylor, R-York.
Privatization of Liquor Stores
The time has come, once and for all, to give Pennsylvanians the freedom to choose their own wine and spirits -- without the government's monopoly of mediocrity. Government in the booze business has always been a lose business. Let's give our legislators a final push to let them know the time is now to get government out of the booze business! Currently, this issue is stalled in the House of Representatives so your phone calls, emails and faxes can have a positive effect in getting this to a vote before the Legislators leave Harrisburg for the Summer.
By allowing our attention to be focused exclusively on the danger and prevention of terrorism, we ignore the many other ways we are being attacked. Specifically, we are missing what our Islamist enemies call their 'civilization jihad' - a form of warfare that employs manipulative financial techniques, lawfare, infiltration of our civil institutions and government and insidious information dominance. Together, these have the effect of exploiting our liberties and governing structures against us, so that our leaders wind up imposing the very anti-American values that our enemies promote.
Welcome to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within - a 10-part, web-based video briefing that is designed to explain why and how this is happening.
It addresses a threat most Americans are unaware even exists within our country, let alone the degree of peril it represents. The threat is the totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine its adherents call "shariah" and the organized, disciplined and increasingly successful efforts by such adherents-- most especially the Muslim Brotherhood-- to bring it here.
We are making this course available in the hope of encouraging, informing and broadening support for national efforts to defeat the insinuation into this country of shariah's anti-constitutional and seditious program.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization
Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.
The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.
Featuring 113 primary source documents, The U.S. Constitution: A Reader was developed for teaching the core course on the U.S. Constitution at Hillsdale College.
Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.
Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."
Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs.
Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012.

In the coming months, critical decisions are going to be made about Iran, Israel and the world. Finally, Washington is beginning to focus on the issue of a nuclear Iran. Many of our leaders want to confront this looming threat. But others want to keep kicking the can down the road. The debate is far from over.
We know that when thousands of CUFI activists arrive in DC and on Capitol Hill, we can change the conversation.
We can remind our leaders that a nuclear Iran is not only a threat to Israel, but to the US as well. And we can demonstrate to our elected officials that their constituents care enough about this issue to show up at their DC offices.
We know that we can create a sense of immediacy that's otherwise lacking.
We know that the more of us who show up and speak out -- the louder our voice and the greater our impact.
Tonight, Sunday June 3rd, CUFI Founder and Chairman, Pastor John Hagee, will be announcing an exciting new CUFI initiative. You can click here to watch it live at 7:30 PM Eastern (6:30 PM Central, 5:30 PM Mountain, 4:30 PM Pacific). This link will not be live until 7:30 PM Eastern (6:30 PM Central, 5:30 PM Mountain, 4:30 PM Pacific) tonight.
Tonight, Pastor Hagee will be announcing the creation of the Israel Defense Fund. This emergency fund will enable CUFI to meet the major challenges we anticipate in the coming months.
CUFI has accomplished great things for Israel. But the times in which we live demand that we do even more -- and do so now!
We need to do more to defend Israel in the public square and in the media. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to purchase more pro-Israel billboards across America as well as full-page newspaper ads as circumstances demand.
We need to do more to defend Israel on our college campuses. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to train even more students and hold even more pro-Israel events on campuses across the country.
We need to do more to defend Israel before our leaders. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to be more active than ever in educating our nation's leaders about the justice of Israel's cause.
Even if you can't watch the broadcast, don't miss out on the opportunity to be part of the Israel Defense Fund! Click here now to contribute.
We will not be silent. Together, we will do more than ever to stand up and speak up for Israel.
May God Bless You and Those that You Love,
David Brog Executive Director CUFI

The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:
Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care
The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:
For Tea Parties, this can be used as basic ammunition for letters to the editor, columns for your local news outlet, handouts at public events, emailing the pdf to our elected reps as well as to members, friends and neighbors.
This appears to be an excellent resource; let's make use of it.

By revealing the Nazi and Marxist origins of groups such as the Muslim Students Association and Students for Justice in Palestine and the connections between these organizations and terrorist activities around the globe, Muslim Hate Groups on Campus sheds light on the dark undercurrent of anti-Semitism which flows unobstructed through our most prestigious institutions of higher education.
After years of ridiculous political stalling, the Obama administration is now trying to start the entire review process all over again for the Keystone XL pipeline! That would mean years of additional delays - or more likely Canada simply giving up and building a pipeline to the west coast of Canada to ship their oil to Asia by tanker instead. It's an affront to millions of Americans out of work and an outrage to millions more who are paying higher energy costs as a result of this administration's policies.
You can have a voice
: The State Department is required to accept public comments on whether they should restart the whole review process from the beginning before they can do it. The crazy lefties are already pouring in comments to give Obama an excuse to kill the pipeline.
At stake are about 20,000 immediate jobs, a secure supply of North American oil, billions in private investment, and the global efficiency benefits of connecting a major crude source to the world's most efficient refining center. It's unbelievable that rather than simply say "yes," Obama is trying to kill the pipeline with yet another open-ended study.
We cannot allow Obama the excuse that the public
wanted
to start the process all over again - but if the only comments in the official docket are from extreme left-wing activists, he can get away with it.
on Facebook and Twitter to spead the word on this latest unbelievable move by the Obama administration. They are only accepting comments until the end of July, so please spread the word now!
Thank you!

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is at it again-shamelessly advancing a socialist agenda at the expense of American taxpayers.
The laundry list of scandals CPB/NPR have been involved in recently is staggering:
Senior NPR executives were caught on camera telling undercover investigators that the Republican Party has been hijacked by fanatical Tea Party Americans who are "xenophobic" and "sort of white, middle America, gun-toting seriously racist."
An NPR producer described in disturbingly graphic detail how she would revel in Rush Limbaugh's death.
NPR host Lisa Simeone was caught acting as a spokeswoman for the radical, anti-American Occupy D.C. group.
NPR fired Juan Williams because he dared to voice concern over Islamic terrorism, but happily employs far-left-wing loons who wish death on conservatives or express solidarity with Muslim extremists.
PBS is not an objective news outlet. It is a shill for George Soros and other left-wing malcontents.
If that wasn't obvious before, certainly PBS's latest propaganda film advocating for socialized dental care proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that CPB and its affiliates are not interested in reporting the news. Their primary objective is to brainwash Americans into embracing the socialist agenda.
At a time when our national debt threatens the very survival of our Republic, the fact that Congress continues to spend money borrowed from China and Saudi Arabia on a left-wing propaganda machine is deplorable and unacceptable.
It is immoral and un-American to force taxpayers to pay for documentaries promoting socialism.
Our country is drowning in debt to the point where Congress is contemplating significant and risky defense cuts to guarantee fiscal solvency. Clearly, now is the time to defund the useless left-wing CPB.
George Soros already spends billions on socialist propaganda, he doesn't need any help from taxpaying Americans.

Victory Center" on Facebook
-Gabriel Malor
Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center appwill, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.
It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on.
Today is the day the Obamacare decision will come out.
It should happen after 10 o'clock eastern time this morning.
Come by RedState and we will be live streaming the award winning Coffee & Markets podcast with live coverage of the decision and its implications.
At 1pm ET on WSB Radio, the nation's most listened to talk radio station, I'll be hosting a two hour radio special about the ruling. Guests will include Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens and Karen Harned, Executive Director of the NFIB's legal center. The NFIB is a lead plaintiffs in the case.
I'll be back on WSB from 6pm to 8pm tonight, still talking about the case. Additionally, I'll be on Erin Burnett's show on CNN at the top of the 7pm ET hour.
Throughout the day here at RedState we will have continuing coverage and analysis regardless of how the decision goes.
As for my personal prediction, I think our black robed masters in false Solomonic form will split the baby.
House and Senate Republican leaders, collectively the Stupid Party, are yet again set to expand government, government spending, and engage in Keynesian economic policies they've criticized Barack Obama for.
Somewhat wisely, they are releasing all this as the Supreme Court releases its Obamacare decision so no one will pay attention. Ironically, as we wait to see if the Supreme Court gives Congress plenary power through the Commerce Clause, Congressional Republicans are feeding the Leviathan on their own.
Republicans and Democrats have agreed to a massive increase in federal gluttony with a highway bill. The Republicans decided to drop demands for approving the Keystone XL pipeline and demands that the EPA stop its ridiculous regulations on coal plants that will harm our energy future. In exchange, Democrats will not fund bike paths and highway landscaping.
Many of the up and coming members of the Gang of 500 in Washington, DC - those reporters and pundits who help shape and cover inside the beltway conventional wisdom - lean left of center. In so doing, they are sympathetic to the talking points of the left.
I'm sure for the last 72 hours, in the run up to the Obamacare decision, many reporters have been meditating over the talking points from Center for American Progress and the Obama campaign.
The basic talking point goes like this: the five Justices of the Supreme Court have usurped democracy because everybody that's anybody knows the individual mandate is constitutional.
We won't know until later today what the Court decides. What we do know is that the left's last minute spin willfully chooses to ignore a few points that reporters, if they are competent, should notice.
In the supposedly reality based community, reality is a construction of intricately woven dung huts sheltering left-wing tropes as fact. "Memes," as the kids these days call them, get started here. They are the thoughts that affect the presuppositions people make when weighing in on the news of the day.
According to Ezra Klein, first in the New Yorker and now in the Washington Post, if the Supreme Court throws out the individual mandate it will be because "[o]ver the past two years, the Republican Party has slowly been building a permission structure for the five Republicans on the Supreme Court to feel comfortable doing something nobody thought they could do: Violate the existing understanding of the Commerce Clause and, in perhaps the most significant moment of judicial activism since the New Deal, overturn either all or part of the Affordable Care Act."
While everyone is waiting breathlessly to see whether the Supreme Court will strike down Obama's egregious power grab in the healthcare sector, a bipartisan group of congressmen and senators are working to grow government in several other sectors of the economy. We must not be complacent.
In what was supposed to be a snoozer election night, a little known conservative candidate, Jim Bridenstine, came out of nowhere to unseat 10-year veteran John Sullivan in conservative Oklahoma District 1. He did so by a 7-point margin, even though he was outspent 4-1 and nobody gave him any hope of succeeding.
Even among many politicos who woke up to read about this astonishing sleeper upset, there were murmurs of "John Who?" Well, there is a poignant lesson in John Sullivan's loss that will go unnoticed in the media and political commentariat.
As we've noted several times this year, there is a concerted effort to overturn the earmark ban in the House and reinstate some form of this onerous practice. Some conservatives might fall prey to the argument that we should focus our attention on the big-ticket items rather than the chump change that is spent on earmarks. That would be a serious mistake.
If the practice of earmarking is allowed to return to the House, we will never limit the size of government when presented with the opportunity during votes on the "big bills." Everyone knows that it's politically uncomfortable for a member to turn down a popular earmark for his/her district. Once earmarks are allowed to return to the legislative process, they will be used as bribes - what Senator Coburn refers to as "true insider trading" - to grease the skids of big-government legislation.

As a vehicle for legitimizing and promoting Shariah throughout the world, Shariah-compliant finance is a phenomenon that is taking the financial world by storm right under the noses of American investors.
Given the stated mission of Shariah is to bring about the rule of Islam worldwide, anything that promotes the Shariah mission warrants careful scrutiny. American investors deserve to know where their money is being invested, and the fact that their hard-earned dollars could be helping fund the very radical terrorist groups that are seeking to destroy this nation is shocking.
It is vital that we come to grips and recognize not just the kinetic aspects of radical Islam, but also the idea of "stealth jihad," which can infiltrate our operating systems.
Shariah is an Arabic term used to describe Islamic doctrinal law regarded in the Islamic world as immutable, indivisible and mandatory for all Muslims to follow in all aspects of life.
When Barack H. Obama phoned to congratulate Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood president-elect, Mohammed Mursi, he confirmed the naïve fantasy world Obama instituted in the White House. He also confirmed a Congressional investigation is warranted.
When one considers the future of this century, there are several existential threats, the greatest of which is "GNR." As free people, we should encourage the dissemination of information technologies such as GNR under one condition.
The Obama administration said Monday it is suspending existing agreements with Arizona police over enforcement of federal immigration laws, and said it has issued a directive telling federal authorities to decline many of the calls reporting illegal immigrants that DHS may get from Arizona police.

The looming threat of sequestration is proving to extend beyond the walls of the Pentagon, making its way into the political arena as the November elections get closer.
How many of us understand the language of the Left? It is presented as respect or compassion for certain groups or individuals but, in reality, is it merely an attempt at forwarding a political agenda?
Young black men are far more dangerous to other young black men than white racists, but that's not what the MSM depicts. If MSM reporters and pundits really want to look for racists, they'll find more looking in the mirror.
Recent acts by the White House, State Department, FBI, Pentagon, and the Justice Department demonstrate the power the Muslim Brotherhood has within our Administration. Is it too late for concerned citizens to save our country?
The U.N.'s Rio+20 agenda would harm health, welfare and nature - and make poverty permanent. It is a good thing that the radical Rio+20 agenda was largely rejected.
GOP senators are putting the pressure on Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special counsel to investigate whether the White House is responsible for national security leaks.
Union bosses are excited that they have prevented their members from getting raises.
It's a bit mind-boggling, but that's what happened. Last week, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) celebrated defeating a bill in the Senate that would have allowed raises, declaring that the legislation would have stripped workers' "fundamental rights." The union's blog encouraged tweeting and sharing the "good news" on Facebook.
The RAISE (Rewarding Achievement and Incentivizing Successful Employees) Act, introduced this year by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), would lift the ceiling on unionized workers' wages by allowing employers to pay individual workers more-but not less-than the union contract specifies. It was defeated in a 45-54 vote along party lines. Read More . . .

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) said the Obama Administration's response to the Supreme Court ruling on her state's immigration law was akin to saying "Drop dead, Arizona."
A district court upheld the EPA's regulation of carbon dioxide yesterday, meaning that if Congress doesn't intervene, "Americans will suffer from dramatically higher energy costs and a slower economy-all for no noticeable change in the Earth's temperature," says Heritage's Nicolas Loris.
The last thirty days have made it clear that Barack Obama is not going to win the 2012 election by a substantial margin. The polls still show the race near dead even with over five months, and all sorts of unforeseen events, to come. But after the Obama meltdown of April and May, I don't think he in any way resembles the mysterious Pied Piper figure of 2008, who mesmerized and then marched the American people over the cliff. Polls change daily; gaffes and wars may come aplenty. But Barack Obama has lost the American center and now he is reduced to the argument that Mitt Romney would be even worse than he has been, as he tries to cobble together an us-versus-them 51% majority from identity groups through cancelling the Keystone Pipeline, granting blanket amnesty, ginning up the "war on women," and flipping on gay marriage.
Mythographer in Chief
The Obama memoir is revealed not really to be a memoir at all. Most of his intimate friends and past dalliances that we read about in Dreams From My Father were, we learn, just made up ("composites"); the problem, we also discover, with the president's autobiography is not what is actually false, but whether anything much at all is really true in it. If a writer will fabricate the details about his own mother's terminal illness and quest for insurance, then he will probably fudge on anything. For months the president fought the Birthers who insist that he was born in Kenya, only to have it revealed that he himself for over a decade wrote just that fact in his own literary biography. Is Barack Obama then a birther?
Has any major public figure (57 states, Austrian language, corpse-men, Maldives for Falklands, private sector "doing fine," etc.) been a more underwhelming advertisement for the quality of a Harvard education or a Chicago Law School part-time billet? Has any presidential candidate or president set a partisan crowd to laughing by rubbing his chin with his middle finger as he derides an opponent, or made a joke about killing potential suitors of his daughters with deadly Predator drones, or recited a double entendre "go-down" joke about a sex act?
From Recession to Recovery to Stasis
As we see in New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin, the cure for the present economic malaise is not rocket science - a curbing of the size of government, a revision of the tax code, a modest rollback of regulation, reform of public employment, and holding the line on new taxes. Do that and public confidence returns, businesses start hiring, and finances settle down. Do the opposite - as we see in Mediterranean Europe, California, or Illinois over the last decade - and chaos ensues.
Obama took a budding recovery in June 2009, and through massive borrowing, the federal takeover of health care, new expansions of food stamps and unemployment insurance, the curtailing of oil and gas leasing on public lands, new regulations, and non-stop demagoguery of the private sector slowed the economy to a crawl. His goal seems not to restore economic growth per se but to seek an equality of result, even if that means higher unemployment and less net wealth for the poor and middle classes. Obama hinted at that in 2008 when he said he would raise capital gains taxes even if it meant less revenue, given the need for "fairness." Indeed, equality is best achieved by bringing the top down rather than the bottom up. Nowhere is the Obama model of massive borrowing, vast increases in the size of the state, more regulations, and class warfare successful - not in California or Illinois, not in Greece, Spain, or Italy, not anywhere.
To Be or Not to Be a Fat Cat?
Culturally, Obama might at least have played the Jimmy Carter populist and eschewed the elite world that had so mesmerized Bill Clinton. Instead, Obama proved a counterfeit populist and became enthralled with the high life of rich friends, celebrities, high-priced fundraisers, and family getaways to Martha's Vineyard or Costa del Sol. He somehow has set records both in the number of meet-and-greet campaign fundraisers and the number of golf rounds played. As Obama damned the fat cats and corporate jet owners, he courted them in preparation to joining them post-officium. It simply is unsustainable for a Hawaii prep-schooled president to talk down to black audiences in a fake black patois in warning about "them," only to put on his polo shirt, shades and golf garb to court "them" on the links.
The Great Divide
Race? We live in a world where either the president or the attorney general will too often weigh in, and clumsily and in polarizing fashion, on any high-profile white/black legal matter. By now we got the message that we are all cowards, are not nice to Mr. Holder's "people," are racists in wanting audits of his performance, and are the sort of enemies the president wants punished.
We live in an age of a daily dose of the provocateur Al Sharpton and the nearly daily shrill accusations of the Black Caucus. No president ever entered office with more racial goodwill and no president has so racially polarized the country. Anyone who read the racially obsessed Dreams From My Father or reviewed the race-baiting sermons of the demented Rev. Wright could have predicted the ongoing deterioration in racial relations. We live in an age in which criticism of the president is alleged racism, creating an impossible situation: the country is redeemed only if it elects Obama, and stays redeemed only if he is reelected. How strange to read columnists one week alleging racism, and on the next warning us about the Mormon Church.
The most recent de facto amnesty is not just politically cynical, but unworkable. Consider that Obama himself warned on two earlier occasions that it would be legally impossible to do what he just did, and so he did not do it - even when he had Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress - until he was at 50/50 in the polls in a reelection fight. If we are to extend to roughly one million illegal aliens blanket amnesty on the premise that they are in or have graduated from high school and have not been convicted of a crime, then are we to deport now those who dropped out of high school (the Hispanic drop out rate in general in California is over 50%) or who have been arrested and convicted? Will this loud and public effort by the Hispanic elite to achieve amnesty for over 11 million illegal aliens moderate the MEChA/La Raza university writ that the United States is a culpable place - for how can they desire so what they so criticize? Given that Asians are now the largest immigrant group (almost all arriving legally, with either education, skills, or capital), will yet another group adopt lobbying efforts as well to increase the numbers of kindred arrivals, given that immigration policy is now predicated on ethnic and identity politics?
The Age of Transparency?
Solyndra, the reversals of the Chrysler creditors, the GSA mess, the Secret Service embarrassments, and Fast and Furious were not the new transparency. But Securitygate proved a scandal like none other in recent memory, trumping both Watergate and Iran-Contra - albeit ignored by the press. Usually administrations fight leaks from self-proclaimed whistleblowers, but do not themselves aid and abet violators of government confidentiality to promote a pathetic (reading Thomas Aquinas while selecting drone targets?) narrative of heroic wartime leadership.
Usually liberal reporters convince themselves into thinking they publish leaks as a way of speaking "truth to power," not as near accomplices in promoting a partisan agenda. Usually leaks happen after events, not in the middle of an ongoing war against terrorists. How odd that the Obama administration has done more harm to the country than did Wikileaks. Why would the president not release subpoenaed documents to the U.S. Congress while he leaked national security secrets to the world?
Appointments? Where does one find the like of an Anita Dunn (her hero was Mao), the truther Van Jones, or Al "Crucify" Armendariz? Do we remember guests to the Bush White House being photographed flipping off portraits of Bill Clinton? Usually Treasury secretaries are models of tax probity, not tax violators themselves. Why is the secretary of Labor issuing videos inviting illegal aliens to contact her office when lodging complaints against employers? Even John Mitchell did not violate so many ethical standards as has Eric Holder, who sees nothing wrong in appointing an Obama appointee and Obama campaign donor to investigate possible Obama administration legal violations. Why was grilling Alberto Gonzalez not racism, but doing the same to Eric Holder supposedly is? From where did "Shut the f- up" National Security Advisor Thomas Donilon appear? Fannie Mae and K Street? Do Commerce secretaries usually drive Lexuses as they promote U.S. industry?
A Patch of Blue
Can there be good news in this era of Obama's managed decline? In fact, we have two good reasons to rejoice. One, never has the hard Left had such an ideal megaphone as Barack Hussein Obama: his identity was constructed as multicultural to the core. He put liberals at ease through his comportment and chameleon voice (ask either Harry Reid or Joe Biden). He ran hard left of Hillary Clinton and promised everything from shutting down Guantanamo to ending renditions, bringing aboard the likes of a Harold Koh from Yale and Cass Sunstein from Chicago. He was young, hip, self-described as cool, and was hailed as the best emissary of the radical liberal vision of any in decades. Historians hailed Obama as the smartest president who ever held office, disagreeing only whether he was JFK or FDR reincarnate.
And what happened? In less than 40 months, Obama destroyed the greatest bipartisan good will that any recent president has enjoyed, and has done more to discredit Keynesian neo-socialist politics than have all of talk radio, Fox News, and the internet combined. In just two years, he took a Democratic Congress and lost the House in the largest midterm setback since 1938. In other words, the people - fifty percent of whom either do not pay federal income taxes or receive some sort of state or federal entitlement or both - saw the best face of modern neo-socialism imaginable, and they were not quite sold on it.
Second, it is hard to screw up America in just four years. Look at it this way: gas and oil production has soared despite, not because of, the federal government. The rest of the world - the unraveling European Union, the Arab Spring, Putin's Russia, aging Japan, authoritarian China, the recrudescent Marxism in Latin America - reminds us of American exceptionalism. The verdict from Wisconsin is that the statist model is over. The public union, big pension, non-fireable employee model is left only with an "après nous, le déluge" sigh. The private sector is not doing fine, but shortly will be when it is assured taxes won't soar, energy will be cheaper, and Obamacare will cease. The irony is that the last four years have reminded us of what we still can be, and how we differ from most other places in the world.

Last Friday Rush read from a Real Clear Politics article called "Obama's White Support Is Too Low to Win." The message of the piece should have been clear enough, but some choose to nuance its message.
Saying Barack Obama doesn't have enough White support to win doesn't need a "Yeah but" attached to it, but of course it did. In this case unfortunately the "Yeah but" was, "electoral data indicates Mitt Romney has not yet attracted enough of these white voters to capitalize on Obama's weakness." Although this line was probably necessary to gain approval from a cautious editor, there isn't much "there" there. It deliberately overlooks a huge White rhino in Mitt Romney's campaign war room: of those who intend to pull a lever for Romney probably more than half will be voting AGAINST Barack Obama not FOR Mitt Romney.
The United Nations Charter was signed JUNE 26, 1945, by 51 member nations. Two months earlier, President Truman addressed the delegates: "At no time in history has there been a more important Conference than this one in San Francisco which you are opening today... We beseech our Almighty God to guide us in the building of a permanent monument to those who gave their lives that this moment might come." In 1953, President Eisenhower addressed the UN: "The whole book of history reveals mankind's never-ending quest for peace and mankind's God-given capacity to build." On June 10, 1963, Dwight Eisenhower told the Convention of the National Junior Chamber of Commerce in Minneapolis: "The United Nations has seemed to be two distinct things to the two worlds divided by the iron curtain... To the free world it has seemed that it should be a constructive forum... ... Continue Reading:American Minute June 26
Barack Obama's invocation of executive privilege to keep subpoenaed documents from congressional committees investigating Fast and Furious came as rather a shock to many DC observers. It wasn't that pundits were surprised the "most transparent administration in history" had chosen to OFFICIALLY cover up the Fast and Furious affair. After all, no one actually believed Obama's phony openness claims in the first place.
What really confounded Administration friends and foes alike was the fact Obama invoked the privilege in the face of such an extensive body of disapproving legal precedent. "Where there is reason to believe...documents sought may shed light on government misconduct, 'the privilege is routinely denied...'" wrote the DC District Court of Appeals in the Clinton era US v Espy case. How could a former instructor of law make such an obvious and fundamental legal "error?" (1)
¡Cuidado! No Forks Allowed at Obama's Latino Luncheon By Warner Todd Huston Breitbart.com

Democrats Bad Bet Comes Due Tomorrow
by Mike Flynn
Tomorrow, at around 10:30am EDT, the Democrat-left-media complex will launch the most aggressive and sustained attack on the institution of the Supreme Court in the history of our Republic. When the Court throws out at least some portion of ObamaCare tomorrow, President Obama and his partisans on the left and in the media will effectively declare war on the third co-equal branch of government and seek, in every possible way, to undermine the legitimacy of the Court.
They have already tried to lay the groundwork for their attacks.Politico today even unearthed disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner to test-drive the coming partisan attacks against the Court. Glimpses of these attacks have been around since oral arguments back in March, but when the reality of the Court's rejection of Obama's signature "achievement" becomes clear, the ferociousness of the attacks will be like nothing we've ever seen. It bears repeating: the left is willing to destroy the credibility of the Supreme Court in order to defend their policy failure.

Obama Campaign Prepping Thousands Of Lawyers For Election Challenges
Jun 27, 2012 12:29 pm
The Associated Press refers to it as "a mass of legal support that appears to be unrivaled by Republicans or precedent." Thousands of election law attorneys are volunteering for the Obama campaign, no doubt to challenge voter ID enforcement, among other things. Romney has been organizing his own legal help for the election. Campaign attorney [...]

With the failure of negotiations between Iran and six world powers last week, the Islamic regime now says it has the right, under international law, to close the Strait of Hormuz to oil tanker traffic should an embargo on Iran's oil go into effect July 1.
The third round of talks between Iran and the United States, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany ended in Moscow without any agreement on Iran's illicit nuclear program. Iran continues to insist that the only way out of the impasse would be for the West to accept its nuclear program.
Elizabeth "Fauxcahontas" Warren told the Boston Globe last week that she wants to win the Senate race so that she can "bring an outsider's perspective to solving the nation's problems". And who better to bring an outsider's perspective than a Harvard professor, a member of the FDIC Advisory Committee on Economic Inclusion and the chairwoman of the Congressional Oversight Panel.
If a law professor who spent 15 years on and off government and quasi-government commissions and whose prescriptions have become policy, and who could raise 7 million dollars in a few months is an outsider, then who exactly is an insider?
When Warren's Cherokee claims became a little too embarrassing, The New Yorker ran an article asking, "Who is a Native American?" as if the question of who the hell were you parents were some imponderable paradox like "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" or "How much debt can government amass before Washington D.C. becomes a black hole whose gravitational pull will suck in the economies of the entire planet?"
If Warren's assertion that she is an outsider meets with as much mockery as her assertion that she is a white aborigine, then The New Yorker may run yet another article, "Who is an Outsider?"
Elizabeth Warren's whole purpose in claiming to be an Indian woman was to claim outsider status. Unlike the other blue-eyed, blond-haired law students, she was an outsider, a member of a proud people who once roamed the plains hunting buffalo and writing corporate liability legislation before they were rounded up and forced to teach law at Harvard U.
Outsider status is prized by insiders. The more of an insider you are, the more outsider flair you need to add to your identity. And no man or woman is better proof of that than the completely unqualified candidate sitting in the White House, who began his national coming out party at the DNC 2004 convention by announcing, "My father was a foreign student, born and raised in a small village in Kenya. He grew up herding goats, went to school in a tin- roof shack."
Obama's outsider biography proved to be as phony as Warren's Cherokee claims, but it served its purpose, introducing him to the Democratic Party and the country at large as the ultimate outsider. A man whose father grew up in a shack with a bunch of goats, but whose son is, as his future V.P. described him, "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean".
Biden was presumably very impressed by Obama's ability to remain bright and clean after being around goats all day. So was the nation which did its best to get that nice young man away from all the goats and under a proper roof in the White House.
Obama might have spent as much time around goats as Warren spent around the Cherokee that she claimed to have wanted to meet so badly, but he was determined to remain an outsider. Eight years after the convention, where he declaimed, "There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America" and four years after the election that took him from the tin-roof shack of the United States Senate to the White House, he was still complaining how hard it is to get voters to support someone with his unique outsider biography.
Check out the video below of David Horowitz in studio with Glenn Beck discussing his newest book, The New Leviathan: How the Left-Wing Money Machine Shapes American Politics and Threatens America's Future.
If you've paid attention to American politics during recent decades, you know how the story goes: The Right is the party of the rich, fueled by sleazy, deep-pocketed donors whose agendas Conservative politicians cynically advance, and the Left is the party of the everyman, the champion of the "little guy." Al Gore said it concisely when he became the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 2000, "They're for the powerful; we're for the people!" This story has long been conventional wisdom in the United States, but David Horowitz and Jacob Laksin expose it as a myth in The New Leviathan, illustrating how a small group of individuals have used the money and outsized power of giant foundations to manipulate the engine of democracy and steer America toward a socialist future that most of its voters don't want.

California requires state employees who choose not to join a government union to nonetheless pay the union for expenses related to collective bargaining. However, unions cannot force workers to pay for their political and ideological spending. In prior cases, the Supreme Court has ruled that workers have a First Amendment right to certain procedural protections to enforce their underlying right not to subsidize political opinions they disagree with.
Federal law allows unions to impose wage restrictions on nearly 8 million American middle-class workers. Union contracts set both a wage floor and a wage ceiling-barring unionized employers from offering pay raises as reward for exceptional work without negotiating with the union. No matter how hard most union members work, they cannot earn higher wages than specified by their contracts. The RAISE Act would lift the "seniority ceiling" on workers' wages by allowing employers to pay individual workers more than the union contract specifies.
Union rates are not just minimum wages. They also set maximum wages. Employers may not pay union members more than the union rate without the union's permission. Most unions, however, reject individual raises. They prefer, in Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa's words, that "[c]ollective bargaining agreements create uniform standards for all employees." Everyone gets the same amount, no matter how hard they work. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) wants to let productive employees earn more.

The dirty little secret about Obamacare decision
Yes, all America is awaiting the Supreme Court's decision on the legality of Obamacare, but there's a dark cloud looming over the case, beginning with the people in black robes deciding its fate ...
Yes, the president of the United States is congratulating the new NBA champs, but he's calling them the "Miami HEATS," instead of the Miami Heat.
The remark is being blasted as an intentional insult, as if Barack Obama were actually flipping the bird to the people of Miami. Not kidding here, and we've got the video.
Forget executive privilege, contempt of Congress, Fast and Furious, how many documents the government has produced and who said what to whom on which date.
The Obama administration has almost certainly engaged in the most shockingly vile corruption scandal in the history of the country, not counting the results of Season Eight on "American Idol."
Administration officials intentionally put guns into the hands of Mexican drug cartels, so that when the guns taken from Mexican crime scenes turned out to be American guns, Democrats would have a reason to crack down on gun sellers in the United States.
Democrats will never stop trying to take our guns away. They see something more lethal than a salad shooter and wet themselves.
While I was writing about Missouri Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill's low opinion of the intelligence of Missouri voters this morning, McCaskill was taking advantage of the partisan credulity of her hosts at MSNBC's Morning Joe. McCaskill explained her decision to skip the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte that will renominate President Obama to the top of the Democratic ticket.
McCaskill asserted that that it's standard practice for her to stay in state when she's running in a contested race. Hmmm. When did you last skip a national convention, Senator McCaskill? McCaskill declared the issue "just stupid." As I argued this morning, there is a reason she has "stupid" on her mind, and being in the vicinity of Mika Brzezinski must have brought it to the surface.
This is what McCaskill has in store for Missouri voters: "You've got to say to people at home, which is more important? Going to a place with a bunch of party honchos and having cocktail parties or being at home talking to them? So this has never been a hard call for me. Everybody is trying to make this a big deal and narrative."
Even the local St. Louis press observes that Joe Scarborough, MSNBC's token conservative, played softball through the interview, at one point declaring McCaskill's decision to skip Charlotte "a smart call." Joe never did get around to asking when McCaskill last skipped a Democratic national convention.
McCaskill added that she's invited Obama "to come and campaign in Missouri," but Post-Dipatch reporter Kevin McDermott observes: "No word here on if/when that's happening." As an observer of McCaskill, McDermott is a little tougher than Scarborough.
As John points out below, President Obama yesterday congratulated the "Miami Heats" for winning the NBA championship. He singled out James Lebron for particular praise (sorry, I made that part up as a composite).
This isn't the only evidence that Obama is a phony sports fan. Our president loves to talk about his devotion to the Chicago White Sox; he did it again at a fundraiser two days ago. But when asked a while back to name a single member of his favorite team, Obama stammered:
You know uh ..... I I ... I thought that ... uh .... you know, ... the truth is a lot of the Cubs I like too! But, uh ... I did not become a Sox fan until I moved to Chicago. Because I uh .... I was growing up in Hawaii so I ended up actually being an Oakland A's fan.
The truth is that Obama has been misrepresenting himself to an unsuspecting public ever since his first foray into national self-promotion - his autobiography, no less. Obama's alleged sportsfan status is the amusing tip of a deadly iceberg.
Last night was a relatively quiet one on the primary front. That's mainly because it became clear a month ago or more that Sen. Orrin Hatch would cruise to victory over insurgent candidate Dan Liljenquist. Nothing, then, for the MSM to fixate on here.
Hatch did indeed cruise, besting Liljenquist by almost exactly a 2-1 ratio.
I'm happy that Hatch will be returning to the Senate. He has been a reliable, though not a perfect, conservative for decades. At least as importantly, he has provided forceful leadership in key conservative battles, particularly those involving the judiciary.
Had Hatch been defeated, the MSM hand-wringing about extremist conservatives eating their own, or whatever, might finally have some plausibility. Instead, Hatch's win supports the view that it's not that complicated for incumbent Republicans from conservative states to win re-nomination - just consistently, though not invariably, be the conservative that the voters sent you to Washington to be.
In other news, Dakota Wood, about whom I wrote admiringly here, finished a distant third in the six-man field seeking the Republican nomination in Oklahoma's Second Congressional District. He thus misses the run-off.
That run-off - to be held on August 28 between Markwayne Mullin and George Faught - is worth watching. Mullin, I assume, is the favorite, as he captured 42 pecent of the vote compared to 23 percent for Faught.
However, the Washington Times reported that Mullin, who owns a successful plumbing company, may face legal difficulties. Some apparently involve his campaign; others, which seem quite speculative, involve Mullin's hire of, and association with, a convicted felon who kept firearms at the office of Mullin's company.
Faught, meanwhile, serves in the state legislature where, I understand, he has a strong conservative record. Mike Huckabee endorses him, as do Phyllis Schlafly, the Gun Owners of America, and the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association.
The Fourth District is conservative country, but it is not a guaranteed pick-up for Republicans. Moderate Democrat Dan Boren has represented the District, albeit in a somewhat different configuration, and the Dems will put up a similar candidate this time. Republicans risk losing if their nominee ends up being dogged by controversy. Fortunately, voters have two months to sort out the extent to which Mullin will be thus dogged.
Mark your calendar: Tomorrow (Thursday), I'll be guest-hosting again on Bill Bennett's "Morning in America" radio show on the Salem network from 6 - 9 am eastern time. If you don't have a station in your area, you can listen at the website, www.billbennett.com-look for the button up near the top that says "Listen."
Of course, the show will end exactly an hour before the Supreme Court issues its ruling on Obamacare, but I'll have lots to say about it during the broadcast. Call in if you can and share your thoughts.
My guests will include James Piereson, the author of the fascinating recent article "The Fourth Revolution" that I've talked about here before; Jay Cost, the "Dr. House" of political analysts, who spots anomalies that other political analysts miss, about his recent book Spoiled Rotten: How the Politics of Patronage Corrupted the Once Noble Democratic Party and Now Threatens the American Republic; and Stephen Knott of the Naval War College, author of Rush to Judgment: George W. Bush, the War on Terror, and His Critics, the first extensive book to dissect the hypocrisy and weaknesses of Bush's many left-leaning critics about Bush's conduct of foreign policy. (Full disclosure: I'm team teaching an intensive course on American foreign policy this week with Steve in the Ashbrook Center's MAHG program at Ashland University, and he's kindly covering for me Thursday morning while I do the show.)
Last time I was the guest host, about five weeks ago, I had a special "progressive rock" theme for bumper music. I've got a different special music theme picked out for this week. But you'll have to tune in to find out just what. Hint: think "indie."
Partial Defeat for Arizona at Supreme Court
This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published June 25, 2012 on Breitbart.com.
Major provisions of Arizona's S.B. 1070 were held unenforceable by the Supreme Court because they conflict with federal law, though the Court unanimously upheld its most controversial provision. So the biggest immigration case in U.S. history was a mixed result, one in which President Barack Obama won more than Governor Jan Brewer, in a case reminding us that America's Supreme Court is anything but conservative.
Two important points at the outset about Arizona v. United States that the media isn't discussing.
First, this case had nothing to do with whether Arizona's law is constitutional. Despite the rhetoric from the White House and Eric Holder, the administration did not raise any constitutional challenges in court.
Court Upholds Key Provision in Arizona Case, ACRU Says
Ruling in Arizona v. United States lets officers check immigration status during lawful stops, while striking down other elements of SB 1070, ACRU reports in June 25 press release.
WASHINGTON -- "We're disappointed in much of today's ruling, but the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the key right of law enforcement officials to inquire as to immigration status during traffic stops," said Susan A. Carleson, Chairman and CEO of the American Civil Rights Union (ACRU), which filed a Supreme Court brief in February in support of Arizona.
"If the federal government won't do the job of enforcing our border, we believe Arizona and other states have the constitutional right to defend it themselves," she said.
"Arizona is ground zero for the illegal immigration tidal wave, with over one-third of all illegal border crossings in the nation in that state alone," ACRU General Counsel Peter Ferrara wrote in the ACRU's Supreme Court brief. "This includes gang members in Mexican drug cartels and criminals fleeing their home countries south of the border. These heavily armed cartels even threaten the lives of state and federal law enforcement officers working in Arizona."
This column by ACRU Policy Board Member and Professor of Economics Dr. Walter E. Williams was published June 27, 2012 on Townhall.com.
In President Barack Obama's 2012 State of the Union address, he said that "higher education can't be a luxury. It is an economic imperative that every family in America should be able to afford." Such talk makes for political points, but there's no evidence that a college education is an economic imperative. A good part of our higher education problem, explaining its spiraling cost, is that a large percentage of students currently attending college are ill-equipped and incapable of doing real college work. They shouldn't be there wasting their own resources and those of their families and taxpayers. Let's look at it.
Robert Samuelson, in his Washington Post article "It's time to drop the college-for-all crusade" (5/27/2012), said that "the college-for-all crusade has outlived its usefulness. Time to ditch it. Like the crusade to make all Americans homeowners, it's now doing more harm than good." Richard Vedder -- professor of economics at Ohio University, adjunct scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and director of The Center for College Affordability & Productivity, or CCAP -- in his article "Ditch ... the College-for-All Crusade," published on The Chronicle of Higher Education's blog, "Innovations" (6/7/2012), points out that the "U.S. Labor Department says the majority of new American jobs over the next decade do not need a college degree. We have a six-digit number of college-educated janitors in the U.S." Another CCAP essay by Vedder and his colleagues, titled "From Wall Street to Wal-Mart," reports that there are "one-third of a million waiters and waitresses with college degrees." More than one-third of currently working college graduates are in jobs that do not require a degree, such as flight attendants, taxi drivers and salesmen. Was college attendance a wise use of these students' time and the resources of their parents and taxpayers?
This column by ACRU General Counsel and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy (CCPP) Peter Ferrara was published June 27, 2012 on The American Spectator website.
President Obama told the nation in his June 14 economic policy address in Cleveland that his economic policy plans for a second term would "create strong sustained growth;...pay down our long term debt; and most of all...generate good, middle-class jobs...." He then spent almost an hour describing policies that would do just the opposite.
He did not begin the speech with much credibility on how to achieve those goals. He has been President for almost four years, and has done nothing to generate strong sustained growth, pay down our long term debt, and most of all generate good middle class jobs.
And what he proposed in the speech as all sides bemoaned was just more of the same. But apparently he thinks we are too stupid to recognize that these are the same left-wing extremist policies that have failed us throughout his presidency, and, indeed, throughout world history. Certainly that seems to be true of his continued supporters.
ACLU Loses Challenge to Indiana's Sex Offender Social Media Law
This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published June 27, 2012 on the American Thinker website.
In a victory over odd men in raincoats, a federal judge has upheld Indiana's 2008 law barring convicted sex offenders from using Facebook, MySpace, and other social media. A class-action suit had been filed against the statute by the American Civil Liberties Union's Indiana chapter, which immediately threatened to appeal.
"Social networking, chat rooms, and instant messaging programs have effectively created a 'virtual playground' for sexual predators to lurk," wrote U.S. Judge Tanya Walton Pratt in her 18-page June 22 ruling in Doe v. Marion County Prosecutor.
"Though the law doesn't list which Web sites are banned, court filings have indicated that the law covers Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Google+, chat rooms and instant-messaging services," the ruling states. "Earlier filings indicated that LinkedIn was also covered by the ban, but Pratt's ruling said it wasn't because children under 18 can't sign up for it," the AP reported.
The Supreme Court is set to announce its decision on its biggest case in at least a decade. Not since Bush v. Gore has a court decision had so much riding on it. So much is at stake about the kind of country we will be.
But that's not the only action in Washington tomorrow. The House of Representatives is set to vote on whether to cite Attorney General Eric Holder with contempt of Congress. The National Rifle Association announced that it would include the vote in its ratings of House members because it views Operation Fast and Furious as an assault on Second Amendment liberties.
While the White House and its left-wing media allies have tried to portray this vote as a partisan witch hunt, several Democrats are expected to support the contempt resolution. Yesterday, Rep. Jim Matheson (D-UT) was the first to publicly break ranks, saying:
"Utahns expect and deserve transparency and accountability from government officials, especially when a tragedy such as the death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent occurs. ...Sadly, it seems that it will take holding the Attorney General in contempt to communicate that evasiveness is unacceptable."
By the way, a recent poll found that only 29% of likely voters approved of Obama's claim of executive privilege over the Fast and Furious documents, while 56% of voters disapproved. Once again, Obama is demonstrating just how out of touch he is with the American people.
I can't predict the future. But if the Supreme Court strikes down the individual mandate and if the House of Representatives cites Eric Holder with contempt, it will be tough for the White House and its big media allies to spin these results.
"Contingency Plans A-Plenty"
What will our constitutional law professor president do if the justices of the Supreme Court flunk his signature initiative? Marc Ambinder of The Atlantic thinks he knows. Anticipating a possible decision Monday, Ambinder tweeted: "The WH has exec orders [ready to go] if [the Affordable Care Act] is struck down. Their content and timing I don't know. But they've got contingency plans a-plenty."
Is Ambinder really suggesting that Obama is prepared to defy the Supreme Court and risk a constitutional crisis?
I think Obama will stop at nothing in his plans to "fundamentally transform" America. This is the same man who has campaigned on the themes of "We Can't Wait" and "If Congress Won't Act, I Will."
He has refused to enforce our immigration laws. His administration has been cited by a federal court for contempt over its offshore drilling ban. He is ignoring the First Amendment and trying to force the Catholic Church and other religious institutions to violate their core values. He is blocking a congressional investigation into the death of a Border Patrol agent. And he has the audacity to redefine marriage.
On Monday National Public Radio broke a story that has been largely ignored by the "mainstream media." According to NPR, the FBI has "conducted more than 100 investigations into suspected Islamic extremists within in the military... About a dozen of those cases are considered serious."
Do you remember how the media and left-wing members of Congress denounced Rep. Peter King (R-NY), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, for holding hearings about Islamic radicalization in the U.S.? Evidently the FBI thinks there is reason for concern -- even within the U.S. military!
I hope these cases are being taken more seriously in the aftermath of Nidal Hasan's murderous rampage at Fort Hood. Political correctness prevented too many of Hasan's associates from acting on his bizarre behavior. But I'm not holding my breath. Top commanders at the time were worried that "diversity" would become a casualty after Fort Hood. And we all know how important "diversity" is in Obama's military.
JUNE 27, 2012 Supreme Court Backs Arizona's Right to Enforce Immigration Laws
Monday's Supreme Court decision upholding the major provision of Arizona's S.B. 1070 immigration law is a strong rebuke of the Obama Administration.
The Administration had argued that its own immigration enforcement priorities should be treated as controlling law-that is, above the determinations of both Congress and Arizona. But the Court's decision means that the President must go through Congress if he wishes to impede the states' ability to enforce immigration laws within their borders.
In a judgment joined by all eight justices who participated (Justice Elena Kagan was recused), the Court found that Arizona may implement its requirement that law enforcement officers make a "reasonable attempt... to determine the immigration status" of any person they stop, detain, or arrest, if "reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien unlawfully present in the United States." The Court found that three other provisions, which regulated alien registration, illegal aliens seeking employment, and arrest of individuals based upon possible removability, were preempted by federal law.
In this case, the Court recognized that the core of S.B. 1070, which requires officers to work collaboratively with the federal government to determine the immigration status of those who have been stopped or detained for a lawful purpose, need not be interpreted to conflict with federal law. With this decision, the Court has reaffirmed the important principle that, much as he might want to, President Barack Obama cannot prevent the states from taking action to enforce federal immigration laws just by saying that he doesn't want them to do so.
In 1996, as part of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, Congress made it clear that states retain inherent authority to cooperate in immigration enforcement and to supplement federal resources with their own. The federal government has the exclusive authority to determine who should be admitted into the country and who should be deported from the country. However, nothing in Arizona's immigration check provisions modifies the conditions under which somebody can legally enter or stay in the country.
Arizona and other border states bear the largest burden when immigration laws are not enforced federally or when rules are overlooked. And the burden is significant. There are 2,000 miles along the southwest border, 370 of which adjoin Arizona. Between 2006 and 2010, in the border town of Nogales alone, 51 drug smuggling tunnels were discovered. Home invasions and kidnappings are common in Arizona.
Illegal aliens take jobs from Americans and drive down wages. It is estimated that illegal aliens constitute 7.4 percent of the state's workforce. To address these problems, Arizona passed S.B. 1070, the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act. Today's decision reaffirmed that the states are not without recourse to address such a systemic problem. States should not have to beg the federal government for permission to enforce laws within their borders.
Today's decision means that the Obama Administration may not, by executive order, prevent states like Arizona from participating in an immigration verification process set up by Congress. The President may disagree, but for his disagreement to actually have the force of law, he will have to persuade members of Congress-a refreshing change for a President who has seen fit to go it alone far too frequently.
Miller v. Alabama: The Mandatory Juvenile Life without Parole Case
In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court held on Monday that the Eighth Amendment prohibits mandatory life without parole sentences for juvenile killers. To show intolerance for the taking of human life (i.e. murder), a state should be allowed to impose the harshest of sentences for juveniles-short of the death penalty, which the Court has found unconstitutional for teenagers. The Court's decision Monday does not change this; it only requires individualized sentencing for juveniles.
What Does Obama's 'Marriage Equality' Mean for Bisexuals? By Terence P. Jeffrey In Obama's world, does a bisexual man have a "right" to enter into a bigamous union with one other man and one woman? Or can the state force him to limit his marriage to the union of just two people? And if that is the case, how would Obama, within his philosophy of government, justify prohibiting a bisexual from forming a tripartite marriage?
Arizona, the Racist State? By L. Brent Bozell III Republicans obviously would like to appeal to Latino voters, to every voter. Their challenge is a national press corps that tries nightly to poison the waters, implying that Latinos should vote for Obama as a matter of ethnic survival. "Wedge issues" are fantastic ... when they help liberals acquire power.
Team Obama's Brother Sharpton Moment By Michelle Malkin President Obama's Justice Department is hiding behind the most despicable race-card demagogues on the planet. At a Tuesday press conference in Washington, D.C., human shield Al Sharpton condemned the upcoming House vote on a contempt motion against Holder as "reckless" and "morally reprehensible." Sharpton is accusing Republicans of racism - and by extension, he's smearing every American demanding truth and justice in Obama's bloodiest scandal.
An Arrow Gone From Obama's Quiver By Rich Galen If, as expected, the Supreme Court knocks down some or all of Obamacare, it is going to be very difficult for the President and his political allies to claim the Roberts Court is only interested in partisan politics, not the law. If that were the case, then it would have upheld the Arizona immigration law.
"Born in other countries, yet believing you could be happy in this, our laws acknowledge, as they should do, your right to join us in society, conforming, as I doubt not you will do, to our established rules. That these rules shall be as equal as prudential considerations will admit, will certainly be the aim of our legislatures, general and particular." --Thomas Jefferson
Editorial Exegesis
"Arizona and other states suffering from out-of-control illegal immigration won an important if partial victory in the Supreme Court [Monday]. In a rebuke of the Obama administration, all eight justices (Elena Kagan recused herself) upheld Arizona's requirement that police officers determine the immigration status of anyone they stop, detain, or arrest if a 'reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien unlawfully present in the United States.' ... The Court threw out three other provisions of SB 1070, including one that made it a misdemeanor for an unauthorized alien to seek work in Arizona. But taken in perspective, these aren't critical to the effectiveness of Arizona's law. ... But as noted, this is only a partial victory. For example, in upholding the core provision of the law, the justices read it narrowly and left the door open to challenges to the way it is enforced. Also, Justices Scalia and Thomas got it right when they argued in their dissents that all four provisions of SB 1070 should have been upheld. There is no conflict between federal immigration law and SB 1070. As Scalia notes, Arizona has 'moved to protect its sovereignty -- not in contradiction of federal law, but in complete compliance with it.' Arizona's laws do 'not extend or revise federal immigration restrictions, but merely enforce those restrictions more effectively.' As Scalia scathingly concludes, 'If securing its territory in this fashion is not within the power of Arizona, we should cease referring to it as a sovereign State.' There is a reason we have 50 states instead of one, and the states are not mere administrative subdivisions of the federal government. Each has its own powers and its own interests, a fact that is of particularly acute interest when the federal government is failing to meet one of its fundamental responsibilities, which is precisely what is happening with illegal immigration. ... [O]n the issue of immigration the states remain dependent upon a federal government that is not to be depended on." --National Review
Essential Liberty
"Arizona and other states are fighting the Obama doctrine of cherry-picking which legal requirements the chief executive will enforce. This was the basis of the policy announced June 15 that the government would give large numbers of illegal immigrants de-facto amnesty by suspending deportation proceedings against them and allowing them to work in the country legally. The Department of Homeland Security added fuel to the fire Monday by announcing it was suspending agreements with Arizona police over enforcement of federal immigration laws. These and other actions call into question President Obama's commitment to his sworn executive duty under Article 2, Section 3, Clause 4 of the Constitution to 'take care that the laws be faithfully executed.' ... The framers of the Constitution didn't envision a president preventing states from upholding the law. ... When the federal government abrogates its constitutional duty to protect the states, the states must protect themselves. A statute on the books is useless when the occupant of the White House calculates that it's in his political interest not to enforce it." --The Washington Times
Upright
"The whole federal conflict with Arizona has come about not because Arizona wanted to make its own laws contradicting federal law, but because it wanted to enforce federal laws itself. What does it say about the Obama administration's priorities that it effectively scraps its sworn pledge to uphold the law, usurps the legislative function by ignoring federal laws, punishes those who comply and puts its own re-election first?" --Investor's Business Daily
"What Barack Obama wishes to accomplish by way of immigration outreach, chiefly to Hispanics, is his re-election. ... This is all a shame, if not a scandal. When politics, meaning the quest for votes, comes to dominate an urgent question, we are assured nothing substantive, or perhaps even useful, is going to be done. Every move becomes outreach: the act of begging. It is pretty much how we live these days. The political parties, as in Europe prior to the financial debacle, are focused on giving things, not on taking them away. When you take something away -- a well-paying government job, the right to strike against or bargain collectively with the government -- you offend, meaning you drive away votes. When, by contrast, you hand out favors, you sometimes could listen all day without hearing all the expressions of gratitude and fealty. If your profession is the harvesting of votes, which outcome do you prefer?" --columnist William Murchison
