Rush: Obama created crimes with gunrunning

(Rush Limbaugh) - RUSH: April 16, 2009. This from CNN's website: "Reviving a ban on assault weapons and more strictly enforcing existing gun laws could help tamp down drug violence that has run rampant on the US-Mexican border, President Obama said Thursday. Speaking alongside Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Obama said he has 'not backed off at all' on a campaign pledge to try to restore the ban. It was instituted under President Clinton and allowed to lapse by President George W. Bush.

'I continue to believe that we can respect and honor the Second Amendment right in our Constitution -- the rights of sportsmen and hunters and homeowners that want to keep their families safe -- to lawfully bear arms, while dealing with assault weapons that, as we know here in Mexico, are used to fuel violence,' Obama said. ... Calderon said that the link between Mexican drug violence and the US ban on 19 types of military-style semi-automatic rifles -- which lapsed in 2004 -- is clear. 'From the moment the the prohibition on the sale of assault weapons was lifted a few years ago, we have seen an increase in the power of organized crime in Mexico,' Calderon said. He said that more than 16,000 assault weapons have been seized in the crackdown on drug traffickers, with almost 9 in 10 coming from the United States."

This was Fast and Furious. They were describing it to us. April 16th, 2009, they're describing a program here that's in progress, and they're acting like they know nothing about it. "Some observers have said Obama may be slow to reintroduce the ban in Congress, where it would be sure to spark a fight at a time when his administration needs all the political clout it can muster to push its aggressive economic recovery efforts."

So, "Obama, Calderon: Assault-Gun Ban Could Curb Border Violence ... Obama said he has asked Attorney General Eric Holder to study how current gun laws are enforced and whether loopholes in some can be tightened. He said laws already on the books should restrict the flow of weapons into Mexico." A-ha. And there's the rub. There he is standing next to Calderon, and he said laws already on the books should restrict the flow of weapons. Well, then here comes Fast and Furious, with our people walking the guns across the border to Mexican drug cartels as part of a federal program. Obama had already said, "Well, yeah, existing law to handle it." But existing law didn't handle it, did it, because of Fast and Furious.

The whole point, don't forget, the whole point of Fast and Furious was to create mayhem in Mexico among drug cartels with American-made weapons easily procured so that you and I would stand up in outrage and demand tighter gun laws. It was deceitful. It was sneaky. It was going against the will of the American people. It was liberalism on parade. It's who these people are. They want tighter gun laws. Folks, I want to make this as simple as I can. They created crimes. There's no other way to characterize this. They created, they manufactured crime. They enabled crimes. They saw to it that American guns ended up in Mexican drug cartel hands. And, of course, those people get the guns, they use them. When, in fact, it probably was difficult for the drug cartels to get the guns. It probably was not easy for the drug cartels to get the guns. Certainly not walking into gun stores in Phoenix and elsewhere, then crossing the border.

A Dark and Vengeful God

At the beginning of Sweeney Todd, the chorus of his murdered victims sings, "He served a dark and a vengeful god." In Egypt, an Islamic Sweeney butchered his wife after an argument, cut her up and sold her mutilated body as lamb chops.

Around the same time as Mohammed Sweeney was selling pieces of his wife to customers stocking up on meat before Ramadan, Egyptian voters made their own offering to the dark and vengeful god by voting for Mohammed Morsi, the candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood, whose offshoots such as Hamas and Al-Qaeda have a murder toll that beggars anything the real or fictional Sweeney could have aspired to.

Morsi's election platform was ending the last light of freedom in Egypt by implementing full Islamic law and in a country where 84 percent believe that heretics should be killed, 82 percent believe that adulterers should be stoned and 77 percent believe that thieves should have their hands cut off, the candidate of Allah, the dark and vengeful god of Islam, was bound to win any democratic election.

As a god, Allah does not appear to be much of a lifegiver. Egypt has six times the infant mortality rate of the "Zionist Entity", five times that of the "Great Satan" and ten times that of the Japanese infidels. Indeed the country with the world's highest infant mortality rate is the devout home of the Taliban, Afghanistan, which has an infant mortality rate that is 50 percent higher than Rwanda.

Is Sharia law going to bring Egypt's infant mortality rate closer to that of Japan or Afghanistan? It isn't any good at that, but it will be good for beheading all sorts of people that the followers of the dark and vengeful god disprove of. Beginning with heretics.

Indonesia just sentenced a man to 2 years in jail for writing, "Allah doesn't exist" on Facebook. Thanks to Western innovation, Indonesia has Facebook. But it also has blasphemy laws, because if people started doubting the dark god, they might start asking why Indonesia has an infant mortality rate that is 13 times that of neighboring Singapore.

It's not that the Muslim world doesn't have doctors. They just tend to be doing other things, like Dr. Ayman Al-Zawahiri, a surgeon and the leader of Al-Qaeda; Dr. Mahmoud Al-Zahar, a surgeon and co-founder of Hamas; Dr. Fathi Shaqaqi, the co-founder of Islamic Jihad; and Dr. Abdel Rantissi, a pediatrician and co-founder of Hamas, who boasted, "We will kill Jews everywhere."

Who has the time to waste on pediatrics when you worship a dark and vengeful god who gave you a mission to kill as many infidels as possible? The only infant mortality rates they care about are the ones that they inflict.

Tom Smith's background is a common one in Pennsylvania and across the country, but one that is all too rare in the United States Senate-which may explain a great deal about how our country came to this point in our history.

Tom still lives on the farm in Armstrong County where he grew up. After graduating from Elderton High School in 1965, he postponed college to help his father tend that farm and supplemented his income by driving a school bus. Before too long, Tom had married his high school sweetheart, Saundy, started a family, and went to work in a local surface coal mine.

In 1989, Tom entered the coal business himself, mortgaging everything he had in the hope that he could build a better life for himself and his family. He succeeded, building a series of companies in a highly regulated industry through some tough economic times. When he sold the companies in 2010, they were mining more than a million tons of coal a year and employed over one-hundred people.

While plans for school vouchers remain mired in the General Assembly, some lawmakers are supporting a new idea to help kids in failing schools. Rep. Jim Christiana, R-Beaver, is introducing a bill that would create a $100 million tax credit program aimed at children in poor-performing schools. The bill to create the new Educational Improvement Scholarship Credit will be introduced today in the House of Representatives. The program would try to build on the state's $75 million Educational Improvement Tax Credit program. That program grants tax credit to companies that donate to preschool and K-12 scholarships to students or to innovative public education programs. Tax credits for this program typically are spoken for in a matter of days after they become available. The new tax credit program would be limited to companies donating to organizations that provide scholarships to students in the state's worst-performing schools. In Christiana's plan as well as the existing EITC program, businesses donating to scholarship organizations could cut their state taxes by up to 90 cents on every dollar donated to education. The goal of Christiana's plan is to generate enough money to provide an escape for 30,000 low- and middle-income students in failing public schools. His plan would provide scholarships of up to $8,500 for a regular education student and up to $15,000 for a special-needs student. "I think it is a very attractive program to those that want to help these kids get out of the violent underperforming schools," Christiana said. Support for a new education tax credit is evolving among House Republican leaders. "I think it's definitely something we should do," said House Majority Whip Stan Saylor, R-York.

Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on.

1. The RedState Gathering 2012

We can now share that RNC Chairman Reince Priebus will be joining us at the Fourth Annual RedState Gathering this August. Chairman Priebus has presided over a major turnaround at the RNC. He has dramatically reduced the party's debt, made the RNC fully functional and operational, and worked with conservatives to build a grassroots operation to defeat Barack Obama. We at RedState support all that he has done and are privileged to have him speak at the Gathering.

And Reince Priebus is not the only conservative star you'll get to hear (and possibly chat with). I can now share that Joe the Plumber and former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz will be speaking at the Gathering. As you know, Joe "the Plumber" Wurzelbacher gained national attention in 2008 when he questioned Obama on his redestributive tax policy. He is now running for Congress in Ohio's 9th district.

We're also delighted to have former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel joining us. Karen was recently in the news as the person at the Komen Foundation who spearheaded the effort to have the group cut funding to Planned Parenthood. She left Komen when it reversed that decision.

Former Solicitor General Ted Cruz is a true champion for Constitutional Conservatism. His battle against the establishment's David Dewhurst for a US Senate seat is one of the most highly-watched battles in this primary season. Regardless of the outcome of his July 31st run-off, Ted Cruz has emerged as a true player in conservative politics.

I'll of course be there as well, visiting with attendees, and you'll also have the chance to chat with your favorite RedState.com contributors and diarists. As an attendee, you'll not only be able to catch all the excitement up close, but also have the opportunity to meet our speakers and ask them questions.

Com, which houses a simple yet novel index that compares the voting records to the ideological bent of the member's district. The results are not pretty. 52 members who hail from solid Republican districts scored 20 points below where they should be given the ideological makeup of their district. They are displayed prominently in the Hall of Shame.

In the seedy world of the Chicago unions and the political pawns they control, there is a family dynasty whose name is at the top of heap in terms of power and political muscle. That is the Coli family. Without the blessings of the Coli family and the union they control, Teamsters Local 727 and Joint Council 25 (the governing body of 20 Teamster locals in Illinois and Indiana), Chicago might not have Rahm Emanuel as its mayor and America might not have Barack Obama as its president. Now, as Judicial Watch reports, the DOJ has dropped charges against one of them -- but when questioned why, the DOJ has stonewalled and remained silent.

President Obama's Fast and Furious Scandal Grows

On the night of December 15, 2010, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was shot and killed by an untraceable assault weapon that was deliberately handed to Mexican drug lords by U.S. officials via Operation Fast and Furious. Ever since, the Terry family and Americans across the nation have asked how this could have happened.

And ever since, Attorney General Eric Holder has stonewalled Congress in its attempts to find these answers. Yesterday, President Obama joined this stonewalling effort, asserting executive privilege over many of the documents about the operation that Congress had subpoenaed but still had not received.

Executive privilege is legitimate when properly invoked. But even then, the Supreme Court has maintained that it is not absolute. The Department of Justice (DOJ) must provide a compelling rationale for each assertion. Shielding wrongdoing has never been a qualifying rationale.

Heritage legal expert and former Department of Justice counsel Todd Gaziano explains:

First, the Supreme Court in United States v. Nixon (1974) held that executive privilege cannot be invoked at all if the purpose is to shield wrongdoing. The courts held that [President] Nixon's purported invocation of executive privilege was illegitimate, in part, for that reason. There is reason to suspect that this might be the case in the Fast and Furious cover-up and stonewalling effort. Congress needs to get to the bottom of that question to prevent an illegal invocation of executive privilege and further abuses of power. That will require an index of the withheld documents and an explanation of why each of them is covered by executive privilege-and more.

A concerned citizen, who will be referred to as Ms. J of Cocoa Florida, visited the Florida Family Association web site and used our major oil email contact information (provided below) to influence the removal of pornographic magazines recently sold by a local Chevron branded convenience store.

CHEVRON requires independent retailer to stop selling pornography.

Dear Ms. J,

Your complaint has been forwarded to me for handling.

As you may be aware, most of the 10,000 branded Chevron and Texaco stations across the United States are independently owned and operated. While we pride ourselves to deliver the Brand Promise to every customer at every location every day that does not always happen.

We take issues such as this very seriously and handle them with immediate attention. I have confirmed that the material has been removed from this site and the wholesale distributor has been reminded of our policy regarding pornography. As you correctly stated, retailers are prohibited from selling these materials.

Please accept my apology on behalf of the wholesale distributor and Chevron Corporation for the unsatisfactory experience you had at the Chevron in Cocoa, Florida.

The man who assured Senator Charles Grassley that no "gunwalking" had taken place during Operation Fast and Furious has just resigned from the Department of Justice. "The allegation...that ATF 'sanctioned' or otherwise knowingly allowed the sale of assault weapons to a straw purchaser who then transported them to Mexico-is false," wrote Assistant Attorney General Ron Weich in his now infamous February 4th, 2011 letter to congress. Nine months later the DOJ retracted that letter, advising congress it contained "inaccuracies."

It was just 48 hours after news that a Contempt of Congress charge against Attorney General Eric Holder would be put to a House vote that Weich decided to end his Department of Justice career. Confirmed by a 2009 Senate vote to his post in the Office of Legislative Affairs, Weich is the first of Barack Obama's Main Justice, political appointees to resign as a probable result of Fast and Furious involvement. ... Once again, we are seeing the hundred year war against America by progressive liberals bear fruit.

It is always the same story. We saw it recently with the bank collapse. Progressive liberals, starting with Jimmy Carter, ordered banks to make home loans to people that had no hope of paying off the mortgages. The slow trickle of loss became an avalanche under Bill Clinton, as he and Janet Reno enforced draconian penalties on the banks, forcing their continued forced "charity" to those that had no intention of paying back their loans.

The result was the collapse of America's housing market and banks, and the latest progressive liberal leader, Barack Obama, being able to claim that capitalism has not worked, (and never did!).

Never mind that once the banks accepted the government regulations, they were no longer capitalist entities. To progressive liberal liars, their influence never causes the problems.

Dear friend,

Yesterday, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee voted 23-17 along party lines to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for refusing to produce subpoenaed documents requested for the congressional investigation into Operation Fast and Furious. But this isn't the only thing plaguing Holder and his Justice Department.

In May, PJ Columnist J. Christian Adams learned that Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner had discovered and purged up to 53,000 dead voters from the state's voter rolls. Noncitizens were also found (at least four of them might have voted) and the secretary of state began purging them as well.

Adams applauded Florida for taking the voter registration problem seriously, but Eric Holder's Justice Department reacted differently. Shortly after the state began to take action, the DOJ's Voting Section ordered Florida to stop purging foreigners from the voter rolls.

You may recall that PJ Media's "Every Single One" series exposed the partisan DOJ hiring practices and the radicalism of the DOJ Civil Rights Division lawyers hired by the Obama administration. Two of the DOJ lawyers whose radical background was exposed by Adams and Hans A. von Spakovsky in that series are now at the forefront of the fight to stop Florida from cleaning up its voter rolls.

Take Elise Shore, the DOJ attorney behind the initial letter telling Florida to stop removing foreigners from the rolls. She worked for more than two years as a Regional Counsel for MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund) where she was an outspoken critic of Georgia's voter ID law and its proof of citizenship requirements for voter registration. It seems Ms. Shore wasn't able to set aside MALDEF-style radicalism, even after she started working for the taxpayers of the United States.

Then there is Jenigh Garrett, the DOJ Voting Section lawyer who filed the lawsuit to stop Florida from removing non-citizens from the voter rolls. She is a long-time opponent of state election integrity laws, and she worked for approximately five years as an assistant counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund (LDF).

Adams' reporting on this story didn't stop there. He also brought to light the real scandal in the fight between Florida and the Eric Holder Justice Department, which is that Holder is ultimately defending foreigners voting in American elections. Holder's actions haven't deterred citizen groups from finding problems with the voter rolls elsewhere, though. Just this week Election Integrity Maryland found dead voters infesting the rolls in the state's three largest jurisdictions.

Major lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of Dodd-Frank

With the Supreme Court poised to rule on the constitutionality of Obamacare, a suit filed today challenges the constitutionality of the other signature legislation of President Obama's first term - Dodd-Frank. Brought in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., the case is styled State National Bank of Big Springs and others v. Timothy Geithner and others. The other defendants include the Treasury Department, the Consumer Protection Bureau, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit and Insurance Corporation, and the Financial Oversight Council.

I'm looking over the Complaint now and will have more to report soon.

Romney Makes His Pitch to Hispanics

Currently Rasmussen Reports has Mitt Romney leading President Obama 47%-43% among likely voters, while Gallup has Obama's approval/disapproval at 43/49 and Romney leading Obama 47%-45%. So evidently Obama's partial immigration amnesty wasn't the political master stroke that many in the media called it. Today it was Romney's turn to make his case to Hispanics, before the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials in Orlando. Romney's approach was, I think, smart. Rather than pandering to Hispanics as an interest group, he included them in the message he is taking to all voters:

Three and a half years [after President Obama took office], over 23 million Americans are out of work, underemployed or have just quit looking for work. At a time when we should be gaining momentum, we're losing it. Job growth has slowed and this week, we learned that the number of job openings has fallen again.
Hispanics have been hit disproportionately hard. While national unemployment is still above 8%, Hispanic unemployment is at 11%.

The middle class has been crushed under President Obama. More Americans are living in poverty today than at any point in history. Over two million more Hispanics are living in poverty today than the day President Obama took office.

Home values have plunged, our national debt is at record levels and families are buried under higher prices for food and gasoline.

And yet our President says the private sector is doing fine. This is more than a policy failure; it is a moral failure. ...

Tomorrow, President Obama will speak here, for the first time since his last campaign. He may admit that he hasn't kept every promise. And he'll probably say that, even though you aren't better off today than you were four years ago, things could be worse. He'll imply that you really don't have an alternative. He's taking your vote for granted.

I've come here today with a simple message: You do have an alternative. Your vote should be respected. And your voice is more important now than ever before.

This November, we'll make a choice. We can continue along the path we're on - or we can choose a better way.
Instead of continuing with the policies of the last three and a half years, we can revitalize our free-enterprise economy. We can lead the world in what we invent and build and create. And let me make this very clear-this is the only way we can strengthen the middle class. And this is the only way we can create sustained prosperity. Raising taxes to grow government does not grow the middle class.

Today, I am asking you to join me because, while we may not agree on everything, we share the same goal, the same vision, and the same belief in American greatness that draws so many to our shores. Liberty's torch can burn just as brightly for future generations of immigrants as it has burned for immigrants past.

We know our kids can't succeed if they're trapped in failing schools. That's why, as President, I will give the parents of every low-income and special-needs student the chance to choose where their child goes to school. When it comes to education, a choice for every parent means a chance for every child.

An effective immigration system can also strengthen our economy, as it has since the nation's founding.
Unfortunately, despite his promises, President Obama has failed to address immigration reform.

For two years, this President had huge majorities in the House and Senate - he was free to pursue any policy he pleased. But he did nothing to advance a permanent fix for our broken immigration system. Instead, he failed to act until facing a tough re-election and trying to secure your vote.

Last week, the President finally offered a temporary measure that he seems to think will be just enough to get him through the election. After three and a half years of putting every issue from loan guarantees for his donors to Cash For Clunkers before immigration, now the President has been seized by an overwhelming need to do what he could have done on Day One. I think you deserve better.

Some people have asked if I will let stand the President's executive action. The answer is that I will put in place my own long-term solution that will replace and supersede the President's temporary measure.

As President, I won't settle for a stop-gap measure. I will work with Republicans and Democrats to find a long-term solution. I will prioritize measures that strengthen legal immigration and make it easier. And I will address the problem of illegal immigration in a civil but resolute manner. We may not always agree, but when I make a promise to you, I will keep it.

Let me speak to a few principles that will guide me.

As I have said many times, it is critical that we redouble our efforts to secure the borders. That means both preventing illegal border crossings and making it harder to illegally overstay a visa. We should field enough border patrol agents, complete a high-tech fence, and implement an improved exit verification system.
Our immigration system should help promote strong families, not keep them apart. Our nation benefits when moms and dads and their kids are all living together under the same roof. But, today, too many families are caught in a broken system that costs them time and money and entangles them in red tape. For those seeking to come to America the right way, that kind of bureaucratic nightmare has to end. And we can do this with just a few common-sense reforms.

As President, I will reallocate Green Cards to those seeking to keep their families under one roof. We will exempt from caps the spouses and minor children of legal permanent residents. And we will eliminate other forms of bureaucratic red tape that keep families from being together.

Immigration reform is not just a moral imperative, but an economic necessity as well. Immigrants with advanced degrees start companies, create jobs, and drive innovation at a high rate. Immigrants founded or cofounded nearly half of our 50 top venture-backed companies. They are nearly 30 percent more likely to start a business. And that kind of risk taking is something we need more than ever because new business starts are now at a 30-year low.

I will work with states and employers to update our temporary worker visa program so that it meets our economic needs.

And if you get an advanced degree here, we want you to stay here - so we will staple a green card to your diploma. We want the best and brightest to enrich the nation through the jobs and technologies they will help create.

We also have a strong tradition in this country of honoring immigrants who join our military and put their lives on the line to keep this country safe. Since September 11, 2001, the United States has naturalized almost 75,000 members of the Armed Forces. Too many of these patriots died on distant battlefields for our freedom before receiving full citizenship here in the country they called "home."

As President, I will stand for a path to legal status for anyone who is willing to stand up and defend this great nation through military service. Those who have risked their lives in defense of America have earned the right to make their life in America.

But improving access to legal immigration is only one part of the equation. We must also make legal immigration more attractive than illegal immigration, so that people are rewarded for waiting patiently in line. That's why my administration will establish a strong employment verification system so that every business can know with confidence that the people it hires are legally eligible for employment.

I'm a receptive audience, of course, but that strikes me as a pretty effective pitch.

(This is the essay where, among other things, Wilson said that not only did he not sympathize with Reagan, but that "even if I thought like that, which I don't, I would never write it down anywhere my colleagues at Harvard might read it." Wilson ended up as the Ronald Reagan Professor of Public Policy at Pepperdine University.)

It wasa paradise for the common man, one that produced legions of loyal and productive citizens, developed the modern aerospace industry, helped the West win the Cold War, and exported an attractive and fundamentally decent (if often vapid) vision of American life to every corner of the globe.

MSNBC is in full re-elect mode, which means the network is even more over-the-top than usual. I don't think we wrote about it here, but you no doubt are aware of Andrea Mitchell's crude editing of video of Mitt Romney to try to make him look dumb. It was basically a reprise of the media's George H. W. Bush's supermarket scanner moment, which was a fraud, too. Michael Ramirez gives Ms. Mitchell a dose of her own medicine.

Really, though, I don't think Ms. Mitchell will be offended. As best we can tell, getting caught lying for the cause is a badge of honor at MSNBC.

Unlike Politico, the Washington Post offers a realistic, non-partisan take on President Obama's assertion of executive privilege. Under a headline stating that Obama has "create[d] a tricky situation," David Nakamura recognizes that this dispute could hurt Obama. He writes: "The potential protracted legal dispute has the potential to embarrass and distract the White House during the heart of the reelection campaign."

Fortnight For Freedom Begins

Today Catholics across America are beginning a two-week period of prayer, fasting and public action for the preservation of religious liberty in America.

This extraordinary call to prayer and action by the largest religious denomination in America is a response to the unprecedented assault by the Obama Administration against long-respected norms and traditions -- including forcing religious institutions to pay for medical services and procedures that violate their core values to redefining marriage.

And here's the latest assault on religious liberty: A lesbian couple in New York, where they recently legalized same-sex "marriage," is suing a Catholic hospital for refusing to recognize their relationship.

The culture war is real, and the Obama Administration is throwing the full force of the government behind the radical, secularist left.

The "Fortnight For Freedom" concludes at noon on July 4th, when Catholic churches around the country will simultaneously ring their church bells. This is tremendous symbolism: Celebrating our Day of Independence, as well as calling the faithful to action. As has been said so many times, "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty."

ACTION ITEM: Use this "Fortnight For Freedom" to encourage your like-minded friends and family members to register to vote. And don't assume they are registered. Millions of Americans who think they are in fact are not. Now is the time for men and women of faith to take a stand for religious liberty.

Media Bias

Watching the CBS Evening News last night reminded me just how biased the media are, not just in what they say but also what they don't say.

For example, as I just reported, Catholic leaders are all on the same page and they are taking extraordinary action in defense of our fundamental freedoms. You would think that would be big news. But CBS ignored the "Fortnight For Freedom," and instead reported on 15 nuns on a bus tour protesting Republican budget cuts.

Southern Baptists Stand For Marriage; Make History

Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant denomination, approved a resolution this week reaffirming that marriage is "the exclusive union of one man and one woman." The resolution also rejected attempts to equate same-sex "marriage" with the civil rights movement.

It is especially noteworthy that one of the authors of this resolution is Reverend Dwight McKissic of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas. Reverend McKissic is black, as is the Southern Baptist Convention's newly-elected president, Reverend Fred Luter, Jr., of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Reverend Luter is the first black man to lead the Southern Baptist Convention, and his election says a lot about the genuine desire of religious conservatives to seek racial reconciliation. I hope that Reverend Luter will be a powerful voice for men and women of faith when it comes to fundamental issues like the sanctity of life and the meaning of marriage.

Speaking Of Values Issues...

Governor Mitt Romney addressed the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials this afternoon in Orlando, Florida. His speech focused on Obama's failures to manage the economy and reform our immigration laws. He did well, but the audience was overwhelmingly Democrat and therefore largely hostile to virtually everything Romney had to say.

Next month, Governor Romney will address another largely Democrat audience when he speaks before the NAACP's 103rd Annual Convention. Whenever he addresses such groups, I would encourage him to speak beyond the specific audience and directly to the broader minority electorate with a message that also stresses values. For example, imagine if he said something like this:

"I know Hispanics care deeply about traditional values of faith and family. I share your belief that marriage is between a man and a woman. I also believe, as do many Catholic and evangelical Hispanics, that all of our children should be welcomed into the world and protected under the law. And I think school choice is an essential ingredient to giving our children a first-class education and brighter future.

"Now we may have some disagreements on immigration reform. But on these fundamental issues of faith and family, there is more that we have in common than you do with Barack Obama. He is the most pro-abortion president we have ever had -- going so far as to threatening to veto legislation banning sex-selection abortions. Talk about a war on women!

"He's waging war against the Catholic Church and he has embraced the radical idea of men 'marrying' other men. If Obama can't get marriage right, why should you trust him to get it right on the economy or immigration? It's not like the last three years have given us much reason for hope!

"It's time for a change. It's time for black and Hispanic voters to change their allegiance to the party of Lincoln and Reagan -- to the party that believes people, not government, create jobs, and to the party that respects faith and family."

Yes, that is what I would have him say. But I'm not holding my breath. That's not a criticism of Romney specifically. George W. Bush never made those speeches to minority gatherings either. But I strongly believe that values issues are where conservatives and minority voters can find the most common ground.

Speaking Of Jobs...

The latest economic reports confirm that we really need to change course. Reuters reports that the manufacturing sector grew at its slowest pace in 11 months. This is bad news because the manufacturing sector had been one of the few bright spots in the economy.

But there's more bad news. Jobless claims are up to 387,000. I know the media are reporting a drop of 2,000, but that's because last week's figures were, yet again, revised up from 386,000 to 389,000.

America can't afford four more years of the Obama nightmare!

Five Devastating Effects Obamacare Will Have on Young Adults

In anticipation of the Supreme Court's Obamacare decision, it is important to remember that the constitutionality of the law's individual mandate isn't the only concern. Obamacare will also negatively impact many younger Americans. Here's a list of five ways young adults will be hurt by the law:

Premium increases. Obamacare imposes age-rating rules that increase premiums for young adults. As Heritage research shows, under Obamacare, young adults will pay artificially high premiums, and older adults will pay artificially low premiums.
Loss of coverage. Obamacare puts in place new rules that prohibit plans with annual limits. While limited health plans may not be a long-term solution, some coverage is still better than none. Several colleges across the country have already stopped offering low-cost plans to students because of the new regulations.
Government takeover of student loans. Obamacare ends government subsidies to private lenders and puts the federal government in charge of originating and servicing federally backed student loans. As almost anyone is eligible for a student loan, Heritage's Lindsey Burke explains that "these policies only exacerbate the college cost crisis, continuing a vicious cycle whereby college costs rise in tandem with ever-increasing federal subsidies."
Less money for education. Obamacare's massive expansion of Medicaid, which will add almost 20 million more Americans to the program, will be difficult to sustain on already strained state budgets. As states are forced to redirect a growing portion of their budgets to Medicaid, less funding will be available for other state priorities, such as education.
Crushing fiscal burden. Younger generations will be left footing the bill for Obamacare and its irresponsible spending. Despite his many lofty promises, President Obama's law does not reduce health insurance premiums, spending, or the deficit. The latest cost estimate for Obamacare's insurance provisions is $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years, which still doesn't include a full decade of spending, since the most expensive provisions don't begin until 2014.

Obamacare's negative impact on young Americans is just one of many reasons the law should be repealed.
