Activate: How to turn the 2012 election from a close call to a mandate
Last night, Glenn focused on the importance of commitment. He was the first to admit, a lot of last night's show was something you had heard before - but it's important to start at the beginning and to make sure you know what you believe before you get put into action. And tonight, Glenn revealed ways for you to really get moving!
Tonight, the focus of the show was "Activate" - and it was all about the election and how you can make sure that one way or another - 2012 is a year for a mandate for or against the progressives. And if you think it doesn't matter just take a look at what is happening right now in Wisconsin. Progressives and unions are doing everything they can to make sure that Walker loses. It's a microcosm to what is happening around the country, and Glenn thought it was so important that he recapped it on tonight's show (in under three minutes!):

Is Hamas Building a 53,000 Square Foot Facility in America?
Wednesday, 13 June 2012 Eric Allen Bell
Editor's note: The compilation of materials used in this article are the result of a collaboration between Steve Emerson, of the Investigative Project on Terrorism, Elizabeth Coker, a retired journalist and stay-at-home-mom, Jerry Gordon, former Army Intelligence officer and Editor for New English Review, and Eric Allen Bell, Filmmaker and writer. This article was written by Eric Allen Bell who was at one time a staunch pro-mosque supporter, who had a complete change in perspective after the Arab Spring. Bell was banned as a writer from the Daily Kos after he published 3 stories critical of Islam, which ran afoul of the mindset there. For more on that, read "The High Price of Telling the Truth About Islam."
Hamas, also known as the "Islamic Resistance Movement," is an organization that has engaged in countless suicide bombings, against unarmed civilians. 50% of their funding comes from the Saudis through "Islamic charity organizations." The acts of Islamic terrorism by Hamas have been aimed primarily at killing Jews. The US State Department, Canada, Japan, Israel and the entire European Union have named Hamas as an Islamic terrorist organization.
The Hamas Charter, identified Hamas as the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine and declares its members to be Muslims who "raise the banner of Jihad." The Hamas charter states that "our struggle against the Jews is very great and very serious" and calls for the obliteration of the Jewish State.
To put the Islamic preoccupation with killing the Jews into its proper context, here is a piece of scripture from the Muslim holy book called the Hadith:
The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him. (Sahih Muslim, 41:6985; see also 41:6981-84 and Sahih Bukhari, 4:52:176,177 and 4:56:791)
The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, TN recently defied court orders to cease construction of a 53,000 square foot mega mosque. At the time of this article the ICM are building defiantly, as fast as they can. Once completed, this massive structure, we are expected to believe, is designed to accommodate only a couple hundred Muslim families, with millions of dollars in questionable financing. To say that something is a little fishy here would be an understatement.

Oh my: AFL-CIO Pulling Campaign Funds from Obama Re-Elect?
- Guy Benson Political Editor, Townhall.com
Remember what we wrote about Obama's fracturing coalition this morning? More trouble in paradise:
The AFL-CIO has told Washington Whispers it will redeploy funds away from political candidates smack dab in the middle of election season, the latest sign that the largest federation of unions in the country could be becoming increasingly disillusioned with President Obama. The federation says the shift has been in the works for months, and had nothing to do with the president's failure to show in Wisconsin last week, where labor unions led a failed recall election of Governor Scott Walker. "We wanted to start investing our funds in our own infrastructure and advocacy," AFL-CIO spokesman Josh Goldstein told Whispers. "There will be less contributions to candidates," including President Obama. While there were "a lot of different opinions" about whether Obama should have gone to Wisconsin, according to Goldstein, "this is not a slight at the president."
They're denying that this decision represents any form of retribution for Obama's controversial decision to literally fly over Wisconsin in the midst of a contested, high-stakes election for organized labor. Maybe this shift truly was in the works for months, maybe not. Motivation aside, this move could have a significant adverse impact on Democrats' ground game in the fall:

THE FILM NEITHER PARTY WANTS YOU TO SEE.
FEAR OF A BLACK REPUBLICAN begins with the simple question... Does the Republican Party really want more African Americans? To find an answer to that question, a filmmaker journeys to find out why there aren't more Black Republicans and what that means for his own Republican Party and the Two-Party Political System in America.
 | FEAR OF A BLACK REPUBLICAN 2012 Election Trailer |
Filmed and edited over a six year period, FEAR OF A BLACK REPUBLICAN examines why there are so few Black Republicans and how this affects the U.S. political system today. From the Civil War to the Great Depression, the GOP was the Party for many African-Americans, but today, barely 10% of African Americans consider themselves to be Republican and Urban areas are no longer considered competitive parts of America's electoral map. Beginning in his hometown of Trenton, NJ, independent filmmaker Kevin Williams speaks with BOTH Democrats and Republicans while taking a non-partisan journey over four years and two Presidential Elections to find out if the Two-Party Political System is failing his city and the country. In taking a self-critical look at his own Republican Party, Williams explores the GOP's efforts in urban areas versus the suburbs, the Democratic Party's success in retaining the African American vote, the experiences of Black Republicans with Democrats and their own Party, and what this all means for the rest of us. After taking the audience from Presidents Bush to Obama and through the 19th century to the 21st century, the result is a moving film which audiences won't likely forget.
Director's Statement: "Before I started shooting, I was just a voter wondering why things weren't getting better after each election. Picking up my camera changed everything for me. My intention with this film is to find out if our political system supports the decaying of Urban America, what that means and what if anything can be done about it. Journeying across the country and spending time with an important, but misunderstood segment of our society - Black Republicans, revealed a reality and an experience few will ever see. As race, politics, human nature and history all clash in this film, I know that as the Director, I am only opening the book on this subject matter and its implications for America." ~ Kevin J Williams Director
PA Premiere June 14th, 7pm - Philadelphia $10 The Pearl Theater @ Avenue North 1600 North Broad Street @ Oxford Street 1 block South of The Liacouras Center |

MoveOn.org just sent out an email advising all their followers to call Governor Scott, because "We have just 24 hours to make sure Governor Rick Scott stops his all-out assault on Florida's Latino voters." Now, not only will Governor Scott's email inbox be full of MoveOn generated emails, his phone will be ringing off the wall with callers telling him to abandon his efforts and allow Florida's rolls to remain bloated beyond recognition.
The Department of Justice has ORDERED Florida NOT to remove non-citizens from the state's voter rolls. Yes, you read that right - and you can read more sordid details here and here. Florida's Governor, Secretary of State, and Local Supervisors of Elections are now facing enormous pressure from the Federal government, so it is incredibly important that they hear from citizens across the country, encouraging them to stand strong.
We're asking you to join us, and patriot groups across Florida, as we work together to FLOOD the GOV with emails of support!
Every day this week, please send a short email to Florida's Governor and Secretary of State, in support of Free and Fair elections. When you write - tell personal stories. If you have witnessed voter fraud or seen issues in the polls, write about it. If you believe maintaining accurate voter rolls should be a priority, let them know. Always be cordial and polite - remember the media will be watching.
Because of Florida's "sunshine laws" on transparency, all elected officials' emails are public documents, so the MEDIA monitors these emails. Yes, the same media folk who are busily spinning a false narrative about Florida, demonizing them for daring to uphold election integrity and trying to sway public opinion against the state. These spinsters are closely monitoring the Governor's emails, along with the emails of the Secretary of State and Supervisors of Elections, to guage public response is. Special interests and vote fraud deniers will be out in droves; we need to FLOOD the GOVernment with emails that offset the deluge of email being sent by these groups. The State of Florida must respond to the Department of Justice by tomorrow. Time is of the essence. If you believe having 180,000 non-citizens on Florida's voter rolls is unacceptable, then take 5 minutes to both email and call Governor Scott and let him know you stand with Florida, in their effort to uphold election integrity.
Our goal is for thousands of emails to reach the inboxes of Governor Scott and Secretary Detzner, supporting Florida and encouraging them to stand strong against the Feds. Fellow patriots, there is a battle raging over our electoral process and the sanctity of our vote; the victor wins our country. Do not sit on the sidelines. Please email and call Governor Scott now.
FLOOD THE GOVernment -- send emails every day -- do not remain silent! If our elections are not truly fair, we are not truly free....

RJC Philadelphia Chapter
Breakfast with Tom Smith -
GOP Candidate for U.S. Senate
Monday, June 25
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Tom Smith's background is a common one in Pennsylvania and across the country, but one that is all too rare in the United States Senate-which may explain a great deal about how our country came to this point in our history.
Tom still lives on the farm in Armstrong County where he grew up. After graduating from Elderton High School in 1965, he postponed college to help his father tend that farm and supplemented his income by driving a school bus. Before too long, Tom had married his high school sweetheart, Saundy, started a family, and went to work in a local surface coal mine.
In 1989, Tom entered the coal business himself, mortgaging everything he had in the hope that he could build a better life for himself and his family. He succeeded, building a series of companies in a highly regulated industry through some tough economic times. When he sold the companies in 2010, they were mining more than a million tons of coal a year and employed over one-hundred people.

Sen. Marco Rubio Live
Dom Giordano welcomes
Senator Marco Rubio (R - FL)
Wednesday, June 20, 2012 7-8:30 PM Location: National Constitution Center, 525 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106
"Conservatism is not about leaving people behind. Conservatism is about allowing people to catch up." (Marco Rubio)
There are very few politicians that have risen to national prominence as quickly as Marco Rubio. At age forty-one there is huge interest in and speculation about his political future. Will he be tapped by Mitt Romney to be his running mate? Will he run for President in 2016?
His story is detailed in his new book 'An American Son." Rubio is the son of parents who fled Cuba in the 1950's. Using the work ethic and tenacity instilled in him by his parents and grandfather, Rubio earned a law degree. As a young attorney he ran for the West Miami City Commission, a role that led to the Florida House of Representatives. In just six years he rose to Speaker of the House and became a leading advocate for free enterprise, better schools, limited government, and a fairer, simpler tax system. He found that he could connect with people across party lines while still upholding conservative values.
His U.S. Senate campaign started as an extreme long shot againstFlorida's popular incumbent governor, Charlie Crist. Rubio traveled the state with his message of empowerment and optimism. He upset Crist in both the primary and a dramatic three-way general election, after Crist quit the GOP to run as an independent.
Now Rubio speaks on the national stage about the challenges we face and the better future that's possible if we return to our founding principles. As he puts it , "Conservatism is not about leaving people behind. Conservatism is about allowing people to catch up."
In that vision, as in his family's story, Rubio proves that the American Dream is still alive for those who pursue it.
Tickets are $25.00 and include a hard cover copy of his brand new book 'An American Son."

By allowing our attention to be focused exclusively on the danger and prevention of terrorism, we ignore the many other ways we are being attacked. Specifically, we are missing what our Islamist enemies call their 'civilization jihad' - a form of warfare that employs manipulative financial techniques, lawfare, infiltration of our civil institutions and government and insidious information dominance. Together, these have the effect of exploiting our liberties and governing structures against us, so that our leaders wind up imposing the very anti-American values that our enemies promote.
Welcome to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within - a 10-part, web-based video briefing that is designed to explain why and how this is happening.
It addresses a threat most Americans are unaware even exists within our country, let alone the degree of peril it represents. The threat is the totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine its adherents call "shariah" and the organized, disciplined and increasingly successful efforts by such adherents-- most especially the Muslim Brotherhood-- to bring it here.
We are making this course available in the hope of encouraging, informing and broadening support for national efforts to defeat the insinuation into this country of shariah's anti-constitutional and seditious program.

The U.S. Constitution
A Reader
Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.

About Hillsdale College
Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."
Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs. Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012. |

From July 16 through July 18, 2012, Christians United for Israel will be holding its 7th Annual Washington Summit. We're going back to stand with Israel in our nation's capital. This year - more than ever - we need you to join us!
In the coming months, critical decisions are going to be made about Iran, Israel and the world. Finally, Washington is beginning to focus on the issue of a nuclear Iran. Many of our leaders want to confront this looming threat. But others want to keep kicking the can down the road. The debate is far from over.
- We know that when thousands of CUFI activists arrive in DC and on Capitol Hill, we can change the conversation.
- We can remind our leaders that a nuclear Iran is not only a threat to Israel, but to the US as well. And we can demonstrate to our elected officials that their constituents care enough about this issue to show up at their DC offices.
- We know that we can create a sense of immediacy that's otherwise lacking.
- We know that the more of us who show up and speak out -- the louder our voice and the greater our impact.
We stand at a critical juncture in history. Don't be silent! Don't miss your chance to make a difference! Don't pass up your opportunity to defend America and bless Israel!
Our leaders need to remember that we are watching them and we need to remember that God is watching us.
The time to speak out for Israel is now! Please register today for CUFI's 2012 DC Summit.

Tonight, Sunday June 3rd, CUFI Founder and Chairman, Pastor John Hagee, will be announcing an exciting new CUFI initiative. You can click here to watch it live at 7:30 PM Eastern (6:30 PM Central, 5:30 PM Mountain, 4:30 PM Pacific). This link will not be live until 7:30 PM Eastern (6:30 PM Central, 5:30 PM Mountain, 4:30 PM Pacific) tonight.
Tonight, Pastor Hagee will be announcing the creation of the Israel Defense Fund. This emergency fund will enable CUFI to meet the major challenges we anticipate in the coming months.
CUFI has accomplished great things for Israel. But the times in which we live demand that we do even more -- and do so now!
We need to do more to defend Israel in the public square and in the media. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to purchase more pro-Israel billboards across America as well as full-page newspaper ads as circumstances demand.
We need to do more to defend Israel on our college campuses. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to train even more students and hold even more pro-Israel events on campuses across the country.
We need to do more to defend Israel before our leaders. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to be more active than ever in educating our nation's leaders about the justice of Israel's cause.
Even if you can't watch the broadcast, don't miss out on the opportunity to be part of the Israel Defense Fund! Click here now to contribute.
We will not be silent. Together, we will do more than ever to stand up and speak up for Israel.
May God Bless You and Those that You Love, David Brog Executive Director CUFI

The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:
- Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
- Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
- Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care
The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

Quinnipiac Poll: Casey Leads Smith 51-32; Cracks Magic Number
Written by Keegan Gibson, Managing Editor
Bob Casey has done it. For the first time in years, more than 50 percent of PA voters say they approve of the job he's doing as Senator. Today's Quinnipiac poll has several bits of good news for the freshman Senator and is the latest to show him winning re-election by a significant margin.
Until today, that number has generally been net positive for Casey in polls, but short of the 50 percent mark that indicates a safe incumbent.
By a 49 to 32 percent margin, voters said Casey deserves to be re-elected, and they have a favorable view of him by a margin of 45 to 23 percent.

Victory Center" on Facebook
-Gabriel Malor
Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on. RedState Morning Briefing
For June 14, 2012
1. More Evidence the GOP is Not Serious About Spending
I have repeatedly bemoaned the Republicans (and Democrats) for not doing enough to cut spending. Sixteen trillion dollars in debt and rising. Trillion dollar deficits. Billions of dollars spent every day.
Well, the incredibly resourceful Club for Growth is out with another look at the GOP and Democrats' commitment to cutting spending this morning, and it isn't pretty.
The Club has compiled a mini-scorecard of clean spending cut amendments from appropriations bills recently considered in the House. What they have found is, yet again, depressing.
2. Meet the Micro-Union
The National Labor Relations Board under Barack Obama has become a totally politicized entity intent on destroying free enterprise and advancing union interests across the nation. One of the NLRB's latest schemes is to authorize "micro-unions."
Imagine going into a department store. With a micro-union, the shoe department of that department store could unionize. The rest of the store could be union free, except the shoe department. That's a micro-union.
The Workforce Fairness Institute is trying to education people about just how problematic these things can be for both consumers and businesses. They have a new video, which they are debuting here at RedState this morning. Likewise, late yesterday came word that Senator Lindsey Graham intends to introduce legislation to defund the NLRB's ability to support micro-unions.
3. The Media's Little Bubble of Ignorance
Ed Klein's The Amateur is going to be the number one book on the New York Times Best Sellers List for the fourth consecutive week. Like David Limbaugh's The Great Destroyer, Klein's book is published by Regnery, our sister company within the Eagle Publishing, Inc. family.
Limbaugh's book, The Great Destroyer, is going to debut on the New York Times Best Sellers List at number two.
You would think that a book on top of the best sellers list for four consecutive weeks would get a lot of media attention.
4. Adding to my Reagan Maxims: My Take on "Reagan Couldn't Win Today"
I have not had a chance to write about the Jeb Bush remarks on Ronald Reagan, but I figure I ought to.
Full disclosure: I know many of you disagree with me, but I privately and publicly urged Jeb Bush to run for President this year. On most issues, he and I are of like mind and I think he was a tremendously good Governor of Florida. I would have preferred him to his brother from 2001 to 2009. I'd have preferred him to Mitt Romney. I'd most assuredly prefer him to Barack Obama. And I think he is right on immigration.
Nonetheless, I have a Reagan Maxim. Anyone who references Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment is probably a squishy Republican who cannot win a primary should any conservative dare discuss his record. The 11th Commandment has become a defense for squishes trying to claim some mantle of Reagan when their record is anything but Reagan like.
Now I must add a new maxim.
5. From Sen. Rick Santorum: Standing for Veterans, Their Families, and Religious Freedom
It has been said that this nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave. Those brave men and women, our noble veterans, deserve our respect and support on all levels and at all times.
I am the son of two Veterans Administration professionals and grew up on VA Grounds in the states of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. I was deeply impacted when I saw first-hand the wounded and returning veterans. This exposure instilled in me that we must honor them with the respect and the dignity they earned in defense of our freedoms. It is paramount that America keeps its promise to our 22 million veterans, our 2 million service members, and the families of veterans who go through the journey of defending freedom alongside them.

The 10th Anniversary of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty Withdrawal
Ten years ago today, the United States formally withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, which has defined strategic thinking for about 30 years. Today, The Heritage Foundation will host an event commemorating the 10th anniversary of the withdrawal from the treaty.
The treaty banned the United States and the Soviet Union (and later Russia) from developing ballistic missile defense effective against long-range ballistic missile threats. As seen in Heritage's movie 33 Minutes, President Reagan did not subscribe to the treaty's logic and forced the Soviets to the negotiating table by vigorously pursuing the Strategic Defense Initiative, a comprehensive missile defense program for the protection of the United States. Trend #4: Sales Tax Increases Jun 13, 2012 10:27 am
State sales taxes went up in the past few years, continuing a long-term trend. First adopted in the 1930s during the Great Depression as property tax collections plummeted, sales taxes have seen their base erode over time. Except in a few states, sales taxes generally apply to goods and not services, and often exclude even a significant number of goods (groceries, clothing, medicine, gasoline, sales tax holidays, etc.). So while the tax is important to states because they raise about a third of their revenue from it, Professor John Mikesell has found that sales tax base breadth has declined from 55 percent of personal income in 1970 to just 35 percent today.[1]

What should be done with elderly Americans when they become very seriously ill? Should we try to save their lives or should we just let them die? Unfortunately, there is a growing consensus among the "intellectual elite" that most elderly people are not going to have a high enough "quality of life" to justify the expense of costly life saving procedures. This philosophy is now being promoted very heavily through mainstream news outlets, in our television shows and in big Hollywood movies. The elite are attempting to convince us that killing off our sick grandparents is cool and trendy.

Trend #5: "Amazon" Taxes Jun 12, 2012 10:24 am
The taxing power of the states generally extends only to their individual borders: since the adoption of the U.S. Constitution, states have not been able to impose tax collection obligations on businesses that have no property or employees within the state.[1] In 2008, however, New York adopted a law that imposes such an obligation on a person or business with no physical presence in the state if it (1) enters into agreement with in-state resident involving commissions for referring potential customers; and (2) has gross receipts from sales by out-of-state companies from referrals within the state which total more than $10,000 in a 12-month period. This law, nicknamed a "click-through nexus" or "Amazon tax" law (after their most visible targets), has been copied by a few other states and is the subject of much controversy.[2]

Exposed: The Formula for Islamic Takeover
By admin on June 13, 2012
By Walid Shoebat and Ben Barrack
The word "Democracy" has become increasingly and deceptively powerful. It has come to be seen as something on par with "freedom" and "justice." It has been the fuel for the very inaptly named 'Arab Spring.' Democracy and freedom are not synonymous terms. They don't mean the same thing at all. The forces at work that support the 'Arab Spring' know this but they don't want the world to know it. After all, war is deception.
The now infamous 'Bush Doctrine' evolved from a policy that gave the United States the right to preemptively defend itself to something that sought the promotion of Democracy all across the Middle East. This policy of Democracy was applied to Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Gaza Strip. The result has been far less than spectacular. Afghanistan has written a Constitution that identifies Islamic law as the law of the land. Ditto Iraq, which has also, essentially, become annexed by Iran. Gaza, after being handed over to the Palestinians, democratically elected Hamas to lead it.
Democracy birthed religious tyranny. Does that sound like a formula for freedom and justice?

In the Sixteenth Year of Obama - The Isle of Industry
(The two previous parts of this satire can be found here in the Isle of Endless Education and the Isle of Freedom.) Marc and Julie were surprised to see that there appeared to be little industry on the Isle of Industry. No smokestacks puffing up gray clouds to the horizon, no grinding sounds of machinery at work and no sense of activity at all. Piles of rusted machinery lay near the shore where a few windmills turned dissolutely away from the wind. The solar-powered train carrying them slowly halted leaving them in an empty station with only a few ticket takers waiting around for nothing in particular. After an hour or two, they began to wander around the premises, but there was nothing to see besides abandoned warehouses, piles of junk and a few people, who might have workers, lounging around. When they tried to talk to a few of them, they were met with the curt reply, "I'm on break." The entire Isle of Industry appeared to be on break. A permanent break that had never ended. Finally in the third hour, three long black cars pulled up, two men got out of the middle car and pulled open the door for a third man, who exited the vehicle and quickly looked them over. He was short where they were tall, thick where they were brawny and his eyes were resentful as if the world had done something especially annoying to him today. He wore a white shirt with an open collar and a clean rag conspicuously tucked into one shirt pocket, as if he might at any moment go to work and use it to wipe down a machine, unlikely as this seemed. "Director-General Peter Smolton," the two men announced, and as if he had been waiting for that introduction, he stepped forward and offered his hand. "Pete Smolton," he said. "I run the industry. All of it." Waving them inside the car, he began to talk, as they passed the ruins of hundreds of factories, piles of machinery overgrown with weeds into hills of green and gold. "I started out in a union. Did some organizing for the AFL-CIO, but quickly saw the working unions had no future. The public sector was where it was at. Government work was the future because the future was all government. Only three lines of work in this country still had a future, health care, because people were always going to be sick, teaching, because we were always going to have kids, and form-processing, which covers most government work. 90 percent of government work is either filling out forms or processing forms that someone else filled out."

Liar, killer and convicted 1978 "Speedway Bomber" Brett Kimberlin is engaged in a part-time career of using police to harass, intimidate, even facilitate the death of conservative bloggers across the nation. In what has come to be called "SWAT-ing," Kimberlin and a number of suspected associates make bogus calls to 911 in order to report a serious domestic crime-in one instance, masquerading as a husband who admits to the brutal murder of his wife. Police respond with the dispatch of a SWAT team to the address provided in the call only to find, after breaking down the door and training nervous sights on the first male in view, that the whole thing is a hoax. By choosing prominent conservative bloggers as victims of this life threatening scheme and other criminal escapades, Kimberlin hopes to intimidate into silence those who have reported to the American public the odious past and current criminal exploits ... Those IRISH ARE AT IT AGAIN

by George Spelvin, staff writer
Almost 20 attackers clothed all in black and wielding hammers and clubs strode into the Tinley Park, Illinois Ashford House Restaurant at noon Saturday, violently taking down patrons according to witnesses, some of whom were there to celebrate a local wedding shower. "They started hitting people with bats and hammers," (1) Lauryn Drozd, 22, said. "They had hoods up." Several observers said the attackers appeared to target a certain group gathered for a meeting inside.
Now, the local cops are being especially tight lipped, and our ersatz national cable news guys also are noticeable by their silence on just who the actors in this horrific suburban drama were. Web rumors seem to point fingers at "a group of anti-facists," who are being "credited with Saturday's mob-style attack," inside the popular local eatery whose owner got beat up when he chased the thugs outside. In the eighteen months since the Operation Fast & Furious investigation began, Brian Williams and NBC Nightly News have never mentioned the Department of Justice's gunwalking controversy. Every single time Mr. Holder has testified or a major development happened, NBC Nightly News ignored it. Tonight, in their first mention of the scandal--ever--NBC Nightly News and Brian Williams distorted Attorney General Eric Holder's testimony.
While the majority of the testimony covered Operation Fast & Furious, NBC made it appear that the hearing was mainly over the national security leaks. The segment even made it appear that Senator John Cornyn called for Mr. Holder to resign over said leaks when, in fact, he expressed his greatest frustration with Mr. Holder over Fast & Furious.

Obama's public-sector full employment plan
|
Last week, President Obama said "the private sector is doing fine." This was not reassuring to those of us who suspect the Democrats haven't the first idea what "private sector" means.
He did not help matters by becoming lachrymose over the suffering of public-sector employees: "Where we're seeing weaknesses in our economy have to do with state and local government. ... And so, if Republicans want to be helpful, if they really want to move forward and put people back to work, what they should be thinking about is, how do we help state and local governments. ..."
|
When Democrats say the public sector is suffering, they mean public-sector employees have half the unemployment rate of the rest of the country - 4.2 percent compared to 8.2 percent.
Obama's monumentally idiotic statement has led his media defenders to recycle Mitt Romney's alleged "gaffe" from several months ago, when he said: "I like being able to fire people who provide services to me."

Media scorched for pathetic Obama coverage
|
Members of the national news media are being flayed today for their pandering treatment of Barack Obama and the ongoing suppression of his scandals destroying America.
And Democrats are said to be hitting the panic button now ...
|
|
Wednesday, June 13, 2012 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 146 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS Click here to listen now. "Is It Time For Democrats To Panic?" In the past few days there has been a plethora of polling data indicating that Obama's support among key constituencies is cratering. Of course it's no coincidence that the polls come on the heels of a spate of terrible economic news. But I strongly suspect that there are other factors at play too. Let's take a look at some of the data.
- Today's Washington Post reports on a new ABC News/Washington Post poll finding that Americans have largely lost faith in Barack Obama's economic judgment. When comparing their economic plans, Obama narrowly edges Mitt Romney 43% to 40% among registered voters. Among independent voters, 54% have a negative opinion of Obama's economic agenda. The Post notes that Obama enjoyed a 20-point lead over John McCain on the economy in pre-election polling in 2008.
- This is consistent with a Quinnipiac poll of Pennsylvania voters released yesterday. Four years ago Obama carried Pennsylvania by 10 points, but his lead has slipped to six points. And here is the danger for Obama and the opportunity for Mitt Romney: By an eight-point margin (49% to 41%) Pennsylvania voters think Romney would do a better job handling the economy.
- Last week, Gallup released data finding that Obama was down 10 points among Jewish voters compared to 2008 pre-election polling, getting just 64% support compared 74% in 2008. As one conservative blogger noted, "The only [Democrat] nominees who failed to reach 70 percent in the past 35 years were...Dukakis, Mondale, and Carter." All three, of course, lost.
- Yesterday Gallup reported that Obama has experienced significant declines among core subgroups of white voters. For example, for all the left's rhetoric about the GOP "war on women," Obama is down six points among white women. He's also down nine points among whites ages 18-29 (who frequently don't vote) and he's down six among seniors (who do vote).
No doubt the talking heads at MSNBC will try to blame this on racism. But even Spike Lee is giving up on the race card. In a recent GQ interview, Lee said, "It is not a lock that President Obama is getting a second term... I can't say to all the people that are unhappy with him that they're racist people. People ain't got jobs, people are hurting. So I don't care what color you are, if people are out of work, it's tough." And while many pundits obsess about minority turnout, which can make the difference in a close race, Gallup notes the obvious:
"Whites make up about three-quarters of all U.S. registered voters, and are therefore the most important racial or ethnic group in any election, at least mathematically. Even if Obama were to regain his 2008 level of support among blacks and improve his support somewhat among Hispanics, he could still lose if his support among whites slips any further."
- So what about black voters? The results of a North Carolina poll by a left-leaning firm should have alarm bells ringing at the White House. Not only did the poll find Mitt Romney leading in the Tar Heel State, but he was also attracting 20% of the black vote while Obama got 76%. That was an 11-point drop in the past month.
What issue could have caused that kind of erosion in Obama's support among blacks in North Carolina? Perhaps Obama's embrace of men "marrying" other men isn't going over so well. - The same issue could well be negatively impacting Obama in Iowa too. The latest Rasmussen poll of likely Iowa voters finds Romney leading by one point -- 47% to 46%. That might not seem like much -- and it isn't -- but like Pennsylvania, Obama carried Iowa in 2008 by 10 points!
In 2010, Iowa voters made history by defeating three state Supreme Court justices who forced same-sex "marriage" on the state. Another pro-gay marriage justice will be on ballot with Obama this November.
Clearly, Obama has big problems. James Carville is warning the White House that its message of an improving economy isn't selling, and that Obama faces an "impossible headwind" if he can't come up with something else. One Washington Post political reporter writes today, "Is it time for Democrats to panic?" Maybe. But this is no time for conservatives to get complacent. While these polls are encouraging, the election is still more than four months away. So much can change between now and then. It's difficult to remember now, but the McCain/Palin ticket was up 10-points in early September. Then the financial crash hit, and Obama's message of "hope and change" galvanized the country. Hope and change could galvanize the country once again. If it does, Obama will be taking a one-way flight back to Chicago come January 2013!

Small businesses face too much red tape
"[N]ew federal data show the rate of business startups continues to fall in this recovery. According to the Census Bureau, the startup rate, measured as a share of all firms, has plunged to 7% from 9% in 2008 and from 11% in 2006. The pace, moreover, is almost half the 1980s' peak of 13%. Of all the negative trends tracking this administration, this may be the most disturbing. As startups have hit an all-time low, we've seen an accompanying decline in job creation from startups, which explains the jobless recovery. The data, which go back to the early '80s, show that the share of new job creation from startups has fallen from over 40% in that decade, when business formation exploded and the economy saw huge gains in payroll employment, to under 30% today. The difference is incentives: President Reagan slashed taxes and unshackled entrepreneurs from burdensome government rules, while Obama strangles them with new red tape and threats of tax hikes. ... A separate study, prepared by the OECD, reveals that the U.S. has fallen behind most of its global competitors in promoting entrepreneurship. Based on a ranking of regulations, it's now easier to start a business in Slovenia, Estonia and Hungary -- three former Iron Curtain countries -- than in America. Canada, our liberal northern neighbor, is now head and shoulders above America in entrepreneurial friendliness. It requires the least number of procedures to start a business of any of the OECD nations. ... It's plain from federal data that startups are critical to job creation. And their alarming dearth under Obama helps explain why this recovery is so anemic. If the president really wants to get America working again, he'd stop blaming state budget cuts and congressional Republicans and adopt Reagan's pro-entrepreneurial policies. Unfortunately, he's a rigid leftist ideologue who'd rather stand in the way of new business formation and jobs." --Investor's Business Daily
How can the U.S. re-establish free enterprise?
Upright
"What President Obama has been pushing for, and moving toward, is more insidious [than socialism]: government control of the economy, while leaving ownership in private hands. ... Thus the Obama administration can arbitrarily force insurance companies to cover the children of their customers until the children are 26 years old. Obviously, this creates favorable publicity for President Obama. But if this and other government edicts cause insurance premiums to rise, then that is something that can be blamed on the 'greed' of the insurance companies. ... What socialism, fascism and other ideologies of the left have in common is an assumption that some very wise people -- like themselves -- need to take decisions out of the hands of lesser people, like the rest of us, and impose those decisions by government fiat." --economist Thomas Sowell
"Everybody is talking about how Obama had a bad week last week. Really? He didn't ever have to explain his membership in the New Party. He wasn't asked a single question about Fast and Furious or Eric Holder's corrupt Justice Department, he wasn't asked to explain his political cowardice when he refused to go to Wisconsin, stand shoulder to shoulder with his union buddies. He played golf. He was compared favorably to the Kardashians. There's not gonna be a special prosecutor appointed to investigate the national security leaks. All this talk about what a bad week Obama had? Maybe, but, then again, you could see where it maybe wasn't." --radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh
"Pity the poor Obama administration leakers. They impart their much-cherished secrets to make their man look good and then, at the first chirp of criticism, are ordered to confess their (possible) crimes by the very same president they were seeking to please. In this, they are a bit like the male praying mantis. He does as asked and then the female bites his head off. ... All administrations leak what they want when they want. Occasionally, some killjoy screams something about national security, but the republic somehow survives and the secret is usually only a secret to the American people, not to the enemy. This is undoubtedly the case with the recent disclosure regarding the use of a computer worm to wreak havoc with the Iranian nuclear program. ... The leak that troubles me concerns the killing of suspected or actual terrorists. The triumphalist tone of the leaks ... not only is in poor taste but shreds a long-standing convention that, in these matters, the president has deniability. The president of the United States is not The Godfather." --columnist Richard Cohen
Essential Liberty
"[U]nlike American states, European countries lack a common bond. There are different languages, different histories (Colorado, for example, never invaded Nebraska) and different religions, including for six decades, atheism imposed by communist dictators in Eastern Europe. ... Living within one's means was a lesson forgotten by individuals and governments, whose main preoccupation -- in Europe and America -- has been giving people what they want in hopes they'll re-elect the politicians who dispensed the goodies. That formula has contributed to an unemployment rate in Spain approaching 25 percent. Spain last weekend was approved for a bailout of up to $125 billion from the eurozone, the fourth country to ask for a loan since Europe's debt crisis began. ... [Prime Minister Margaret] Thatcher warned, 'We have not successfully rolled back the frontiers of the state in Britain, only to see them re-imposed at a European level with a European super-state exercising a new dominance from Brussels.' That is precisely the seductive siren call the 'conservative' British government now hears. ... Today's politicians can't pretend they were not warned." --columnist Cal Thomas

Backpedaling: "Listen. Uhhh, it is absolutely clear that the economy is not doing fine. That's the reason I had the press conference. Convoluted: "As many economists have pointed out, America is currently suffering from a classic case of debt deflation: all across the economy people are trying to pay down debt by slashing spending, but, in so doing, they are causing a depression that makes their debt problems even worse. ... The point, then, is that we'd be in much better shape if we were following Reagan-style Keynesianism. Fannie and Freddie's Effect on Homeownership
The increase in the homeownership rate from 63.8 percent in the first quarter of 1994 to almost 70 percent in the first quarter of 2005 and its subsequent fall to 67.1 percent in the first quarter of 2010 has cast doubts on the effectiveness of the government's policy of subsidizing mortgage interest rates and lowering down payments. Although a substantial amount of academic research has focused on the effects of GSE intervention in raising the homeownership rate, less attention has been paid to race/ethnic and regional differences.

As federal regulators struggle to implement the massive Dodd-Frank statute, it is obvious that its architects ignored its predictably destructive consequences. Reauthorize and Reform the Flood Insurance Program
Congress should reauthorize and reform the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The failure of Congress to pass a longer term reauthorization since the last one expired in September 2008 has delayed necessary reforms. In addition, since there are no private providers of general flood insurance coverage in the United States, all such policies come through the NFIP. The lack of reauthorization is increasing risk to both flood-prone properties and the NFIP itself . READ MORE ON WHY CONGRESS MUST ACT >>

Another Big Government Boondoggle
|
Right now, the Senate is debating the farm bill, an out-dated, wasteful spending bill that provides subsidies to corporate farmers.
>> Email your Senators and tell them to vote against the farm bill.
The Senate farm bill replaces direct payment subsidies with a new scheme called shallow-loss crop insurance. It will further distort the market by allowing farmers to make purposely bad investments, thus costing taxpayers far more than estimated.
It also fails to curb the massive explosion of food stamp spending under the Obama Administration, which has risen from $39 billion a year to $80 billion.
>> Email your Senators and tell them to reform the food stamp program now.
Help end these subsidies. Take a stand and email your Senators today:
* Explain clearly that you oppose this big government boondoggle.
* Ask your Senators whether they support the current farm bill. * Be sure to complete the form so your email gets sent and posted to our site. * If your Senators respond, be sure to tell us how they plan to vote.
Use our website to email your Senators now.
We thank you in advance for emailing your Senators and telling them to oppose the farm bill.

JUNE 13, 2012 The Battle for the American Conscience
More than 80 plaintiffs in 23 different lawsuits are now challenging the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate that will require many religious institutions to provide health insurance coverage for abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and other contraceptive services.
At the heart of these lawsuits is whether the government's purported interest in marginally increasing access to contraceptive services trumps the basic right to religious liberty that both individuals and institutions have traditionally enjoyed. The First Amendment states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." The institutions challenging the HHS mandate argue that it violates their right to free exercise because the mandate forces them to provide coverage for contraceptive services that conflict with their religious beliefs.
HHS is allowing exemptions from the mandate for institutions that have as their primary purpose the inculcation of religious values and that mainly employ and serve people sharing the same religious beliefs as the institution.
Essentially churches would appear to be the only religious institutions that meet HHS's narrow definition of a "religious employer." As Rev. Larry Snyder, President of Catholic Charities USA, has quipped, it is doubtful that the ministry of Jesus Christ would have qualified for HHS's narrow definition of exempted religious services. Thus, other religious institutions, including religious schools, hospitals, and numerous social service ministries, will be faced with the choice of either hiring and serving only individuals of the same faith or acceding to the Obama Administration's pressure and covering contraceptive services.
The New York Times would have us believe that the "real threat" stems from "the effort to impose one church's doctrine on everyone." But the debate is not about whether women should be able to have access to contraception or have abortions, as the left has tried to paint it. Rather it is about government encroachment into the American conscience, and as James Madison wrote in his essay simply titled Property, "Conscience is the most sacred of all property." Join us at The Heritage Foundation Monday at noon or tune in online for a panel discussion to explore whether the litigants challenging the HHS mandate will prevail and how the Supreme Court's forthcoming decision in the ObamaCare litigation may affect the HHS contraceptive mandate Learn more about the HHS mandate on our blog >>

Armour v. Indianapolis: Money Down the Sewer
On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected a case from the citizens of Indianapolis to recover a city fee for sewer services - a charge that hit some households more than others. The city's reason for discriminating? A rebate creates "hassle" for city employees, an argument Chief Justice John Roberts rejected in his dissenting opinion. Auto Bailout Was Really Just a UAW Bailout
President Obama told the United Auto Workers (UAW) in February not to listen to critics of the auto bailout who said union members "made out like bandits-that saving the auto industry was just about paying back the unions." "Really?" Obama said. "I mean, even by the standards of this town [Washington], that's a load of you-know-what." New research from Heritage labor economist James Sherk proves that it was, in fact, a load of truth. The Treasury Department estimates that taxpayers will lose $23 billion on the auto bailout. Sherk and co-author Todd Zywicki find that none of these losses came from saving jobs, but instead went to prop up the compensation of some of the most highly paid workers inAmerica. They write:
We estimate that the Administration redistributed $26.5 billion more to the UAW than it would have received had it been treated as it usually would in bankruptcy proceedings. Taxpayers lost between $20 billion and $23 billion on the auto programs. Thus, the entire loss to the taxpayers from the auto bailout comes from the funds diverted to the UAW.
The Obama campaign is touting the bailout in Michigan this week, crowing about saved-or-created jobs. What the bailout actually saved was the UAW's heavily padded compensation packages; what it created was a massive taxpayer loss. The UAW was a significant factor in the automakers' decline: It had raised Detroit's labor costs 50 percent to 80 percent above other automakers, such as Toyotaand Nissan. In 2006, General Motors paid its unionized workers $70.51 an hour in wages and benefits. Chrysler paid $75.86 an hour. Added to mistakes by management, these labor costs were a major reason the automakers went bankrupt. However, through the bailout, the Obama Administration insulated the UAW from most of the sacrifices unions usually make in a bankruptcy-at taxpayer expense. GM and Chrysler owed billions to a trust fund they had created to provide UAW members with gold-plated retiree health benefits. In bankruptcy, these funds should have been paid proportional to other unsecured creditors. Instead, while the Administration paid other creditors only a fraction of what they were owed, it gave the UAW trust fund assets worth tens of billions-including partial ownership of both companies. The U.S. Treasury should have received these assets. Bankruptcy law also enables reorganizing companies to improve their post-bankruptcy situation by renegotiating union contracts to competitive rates. If the UAW had been treated normally under bankruptcy law, the automakers' average labor costs would have fallen to the same levels as the foreign-based carmakers, approximately $47 an hour. While this is still 40 percent higher compensation than the average manufacturing worker, it would have reduced UAW members' standard of living. And the Administration wouldn't allow that. So while the UAW accepted huge pay cuts for new hires, the Administration kept the pay structure of existing UAW members at GM intact. Even Stephen Rattner, President Obama's "car czar," has admitted that "We should have asked the UAW to do a bit more. We did not ask any UAW member to take a cut in their pay." As a result, even after the reorganization, GM still has higher labor costs ($56 an hour) than any of its foreign-based competitors. The average American worker-whose taxes paid for the bailout-earns $30.15 an hour in wages and benefits. Few Americans have the ability, as UAW workers do, to retire in their mid-50s before they can collect Social Security. Fewer still receive retirement health benefits in addition to Medicare, as UAW workers do. Yet their tax dollars went to subsidize UAW pay and benefits. Had the government treated the UAW in the manner required by bankruptcy law, taxpayers would have broken even. The program would have amounted to bankruptcy financing instead of an outright bailout. The Administration could have kept the automakers running without losing a dime. Instead, more than $26 billion went out the door and into the UAW's pockets. Let's put that in perspective: The amount of the subsidy given directly to the UAW was bigger than the budget of the entire State Department. It was bigger than allU.S. foreign aid spending. It was 50 percent more than NASA's budget. None of that money kept factories running. Instead, it sustained the above-average compensation of members of an influential union, sparing them from most of the sacrifices typically made in bankruptcy-a bankruptcy they contributed to. President Obama engaged in special interest spending at its worst. The Administration did not bail out GM and Chrysler. It bailed out the United Auto Workers.

We don't need to lengthen the school year. We need schools that are good enough to let us shorten it. Partisanship Reigns at CBS By L. Brent Bozell III Les Moonves, the president and CEO of CBS, took his wife, the former CBS news anchor Julie Chen, on a date on June 6 - to a star-studded Beverly Hills Democratic Party fundraiser starring President Obama. Republican Surrenderists for Obamacare By Michelle Malkin In case you hadn't heard, even if the Supreme Court overturns the progressives' federal health care juggernaut, prominent GOP leaders vow to preserve its most "popular" provisions. A Few Minutes with Roger Scruton
Posted: 13 Jun 2012 12:47 PM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
I've mentioned here before Roger Scruton's interesting and provocative new book, How to Think Seriously About the Planet: The Case for an Environmental Conservatism, just out from Oxford University Press. Roger's views are not conventional, and here and there I think he's a bit on the wrong track. But where he's good, he's really good. I'll have a complete review of the book soon in National Review, but for now I'll just share one sentence from the Preface that offers a signal of how his perspective differs from the conventional wisdom:
I defend local initiatives against global schemes, civil association against political activism, and small-scale institutions of friendship against large-scale and purpose-driven campaigns.
Late last week I sat down with Roger for a brief conversation for this exclusive Power Line video below: it's about seven minutes long (apologies for the focus on my wide shot-I had the wrong setting on Camera #2).

Fast and Furious, the Video
Posted: 13 Jun 2012 10:45 AM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
This new video by American Future Fund, titled simply "Fast and Furious," is an excellent, effective introduction to the scandal. Someone should spend a great deal of money to put it on television in all of the swing states:
With calls for Eric Holder's resignation growing-John Cornyn's is the most recent-the time is right. The beauty of pounding away on Fast and Furious is that the administration can't respond. Until now, Barack Obama and Eric Holder have simply counted on the liberal media to help them cover up the scandal. Holder refuses to answer such an elementary question as who authorized the program, and he feels free to lie in a blatant and arrogant manner. If Fast and Furious is suddenly all over television, what is Obama going to do? Start giving speeches about it?
You can help make it happen by contributing to American Future Fund here. In the meantime, it's easy to email a link to this post to your friends; just use the "email" button above.

Romney Takes the Lead In Wisconsin
Posted: 13 Jun 2012 09:21 AM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
In the wake of Scott Walker's decisive victory over the Democrats in Wisconsin's recall election, many wondered whether that state will now be in play at the presidential level in November. Democrats took hope from exit polls that showed President Obama with a solid lead over Mitt Romney, but that was whistling past the graveyard, as the same exit polls got the Walker-Barrett vote entirely wrong. Today the first meaningful (i.e., likely voter) post-recall poll came out at Rasmussen Reports. In a stunning development, Romney now leads Obama in Wisconsin by 47%-44%.
My guess is that this is not the last formerly-safe for Obama state that will be in play between now and November.

How Will The Supreme Court's Obamacare Decision Impact the Race?
Posted: 13 Jun 2012 08:37 AM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
Democrats are panicking as they see the presidential race slipping away from them. Privately, they acknowledge that they don't expect the economy to improve enough between now and November to give President Obama much of a boost. No doubt unforeseeable events between now and Election Day will shake up the race in ways that we can't know, but there is at least one foreseeable event that has the potential to impact the race: the Supreme Court's Obamacare decision, which is expected later this month. How will whatever the Court does affect the campaign?
My guess is that the Court's decision, regardless of what it is, will be a setback for Obama. Obamacare is unpopular, and a majority of voters hope the Court rules it unconstitutional. Let's assume that-as seemed likely when the case was argued-the Court throws out at least some key components of the law. Some have theorized that this could help Obama by taking the issue of Obamacare off the table. That seems unlikely. Rather, such a ruling would confirm in voters' minds that Obama took his eye off the ball by focusing on health care rather than the economy during the first year of his administration. Obamacare is the president's signature achievement, one of his few major legislative victories other than the stimulus bill. If that effort turns out to have been for naught, how can it possibly make Obama look good?
This RNC ad, which was released yesterday, is titled "Lost Focus." It illustrates how Republicans will frame the Obamacare detour:
If, on the other hand, the Court narrowly upholds the act, I also don't see Obama getting a boost. Holding Obamacare constitutional won't make it popular, and the publicity surrounding the Court's decision will once again make the issue front and center. Mitt Romney will pound away on his determination to repeal and replace the AHCA, and will emphasize his own proposals for health care reform, as he has already begun doing. It is hard to see any of that as a positive development for the Obama campaign.
So I think the next big development in the campaign will probably be another setback for the president.

The latest in the government's war on standards
Posted: 13 Jun 2012 08:04 AM PDT
(Paul Mirengoff)
Boyden Gray writes in the Washington Times about a memo by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The memo reportedly asserts that employers who require applicants to have a high school diploma may be discriminating against those with learning disabilities, in violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
To the extent that the diploma requirement disproportionately excludes the learning disabled, EEOC's position is that employers can defend the requirement only by proving that it is consistent with "business necessity" and that an applicant without a diploma actually lacks the skills necessary to carry out the job's "essential functions."
Gray writes:
This astonishing requirement places an enormous burden on employers, who would either have to stop screening on the basis of diplomas, or go to great pains to prove that each applicant without a diploma is unqualified.
For example, an employer would have to investigate each job applicant to ascertain, on a case-by-case basis that may have to include a trial work period, whether the applicant can carry out the job's "essential functions." After going to the trouble of figuring that out, an employee no longer has any need to use the diploma as a proxy.
The EEOC lawyers' policy does not just hurt employers; it undermines the nation's commitment to education. A major reason for a student to stay in school is to improve his or her job prospects. If diplomas are suddenly irrelevant to hiring decisions, then at least some students will drop out of school far too soon. We should be increasing the prestige of graduating from high school, not diminishing it, or more will use the excuse of a learning disability - which has no clear, defined limits - to stop studying.
The EEOC's position on high school diplomas is part of its larger war on standards. For example, the EEOC has challenged employer policies that screen out applicants who have been convicted of felonies and serous misdemeanors, as well as policies that screen out applicants with very poor credit histories from positions with financial responsibilities.
The EEOC would argue that employers can still use such criteria; they just have to demonstrate that they are job-related and consistent with business necessity. But its approach removes the right to make these decisions from employers and places them in the hands of federal judges - with the employer, not the EEOC or private plaintiff, bearing the burden of proof. Federal judges are less qualified than employers to make these decsions, and some have strong political biases.
A justification for court intervention would exist nonetheless if there were reason to believe that the employer has discriminatory animus. But in these kinds of cases, there is no claim of intentional discrimination. Indeed, it is effectively conceded that no such intent exists; if it did, the EEOC would allege intentional discrimination, rather than (or in addition to) "disparate impact" discrimination.
Liberals are pursuing a war on standards, and not just in the employment context. But high standards are a hallmark of personal and national excellence. A war on standards, whatever its motivation, poses a threat to our national well-being.

Man-Made Warming Blamed for Disappearing Bird Populations
A research team working on a two-million-dollar government grant just made a shocking discovery: intense man-made heat waves are decimating bird populations throughout the globe, including the birds that were recently thriving in local neighborhoods. According to the researchers, anthropogenic warming-related activities are directly responsible. Steady temperature increases, especially when confined to small areas, target inactive birds that can no longer fly away to avoid the consequences. As technologically induced heat waves are being absorbed across the skin, the affected birds begin to turn brown.
"These incidents illustrate a need for an increase in government spending on further research in order to predict with accuracy the amount of more government spending on raising public awareness about an increase in government spending to study the effect of man-made warming events and activities on biodiversity and lifestyle," stated the report released last Tuesday by Moon Batts, a professor of biology and Paul Choom, a professor of natural studies.
The scientists indicated that the next step would be to calculate the exact avian mortality rates caused by man-made warming events and the role played in it by the condiment industrial complex as enables and facilitators of such activities.

Take a look at America's first ghost city: Glenn recently read a story about a "ghost city" being planned in New Mexico. Unlike Chinese ghost cities, built by the government for jobs and expansion that will never come, this ghost city represents American ingenuity and entrepreneurialism. Last night on GBTV, Glenn spoke to the man behind this innovative idea. Receive FREE shipping from select Marketplace shops!
