Last night, Glenn focused on the importance of commitment. He was the first to admit, a lot of last night's show was something you had heard before - but it's important to start at the beginning and to make sure you know what you believe before you get put into action. And tonight, Glenn revealed ways for you to really get moving!
Tonight, the focus of the show was "Activate" - and it was all about the election and how you can make sure that one way or another - 2012 is a year for a mandate for or against the progressives. And if you think it doesn't matter just take a look at what is happening right now in Wisconsin. Progressives and unions are doing everything they can to make sure that Walker loses. It's a microcosm to what is happening around the country, and Glenn thought it was so important that he recapped it on tonight's show (in under three minutes!):
I knew they had both lost their law license, but I didn't know why until I read this.
This is legit. I checked it out at https://www.iardc.org Stands for Illinois Attorney Registration And Disciplinary Committee. It's the official arm of lawyer discipline in Illinois; and they are very strict and mean as hell. (Talk about irony.) Even I, at the advanced age of almost 65, maintain (at the cost of approximately $600/year) my law license that I worked so hard and long to earn.
Big surprise. Former Constitutional Law Lecturer and U.S. President Makes Up Constitutional Quotes During State Of The Union (SOTU) Address.
Consider this:
1. President Barack Obama, former editor of the Harvard Law Review, is no longer a "lawyer". He surrendered his license back in 2008 in order to escape charges he lied on his bar application. A "Voluntary Surrender" is not something where you decide "Gee, a license is not really something I need anymore, is it?" and forget to renew your license. No, a "Voluntary Surrender" is something you do when you've been accused of something, and you 'voluntarily surrender" your license five seconds before the state suspends you.
2 Michelle Obama "voluntarily surrendered" her law license in 1993. after a Federal Judge gave her the choice between surrendering her license or standing trial for Insurance fraud!
4. A senior lecturer is one thing, a fully ranked law professor is another. Barack Obama was NOT a Constitutional Law Professor at theUniversity of Chicago.
5. The University of Chicago released a statement in March 2008 saying Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) "served as a professor" in the law school-but that is a title Obama, who taught courses there part-time, never held, a spokesman for the school confirmed in 2008.
7. The former Constitutional Senior Lecturer (Obama) cited the U.S. Constitution the other night during his State of the Union Address. Unfortunately, the quote he cited was from the Declaration of Independence ... not the Constitution.
9. Free Republic: In the State of the Union Address, President Obama said: "We find unity in our incredible diversity, drawing on the promise enshrined in our Constitution: the notion that we are all created equal.
10. Um, wrong citing, wrong founding document there Champ, I mean Mr. President. By the way, the promises are not a notion, our founders named themunalienable rights. The document is our Declaration of Independence and it reads:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
11. And this is the same guy who lectured the Supreme Court moments later in the same speech?
When you are a phony it's hard to keep facts straight.

These spinsters are closely monitoring the Governor's emails, along with the emails of the Secretary of State and Supervisors of Elections, to guage public response is. The State of Florida must respond to the Department of Justice by tomorrow. Time is of the essence. Tom Smith's background is a common one in Pennsylvania and across the country, but one that is all too rare in the United States Senate-which may explain a great deal about how our country came to this point in our history.
Tom still lives on the farm in Armstrong County where he grew up. After graduating from Elderton High School in 1965, he postponed college to help his father tend that farm and supplemented his income by driving a school bus. Before too long, Tom had married his high school sweetheart, Saundy, started a family, and went to work in a local surface coal mine.
In 1989, Tom entered the coal business himself, mortgaging everything he had in the hope that he could build a better life for himself and his family. He succeeded, building a series of companies in a highly regulated industry through some tough economic times. When he sold the companies in 2010, they were mining more than a million tons of coal a year and employed over one-hundred people.

President Obama shocked us the other day when he said, "Since I've been president, federal spending has risen at the lowest pace in nearly 60 years." Having heard him champion the "multiplier effects" of deficit-financed stimulus spending, we saw him as an enthusiastic supporter of throwing other people's money at just about any problem.
Thus began our quest to see where we had strayed from the straight and narrow. Here's the picture.
In the [attachéd] chart nearby we've plotted federal government spending on a National Income and Product Accounts (NIPA) basis as a share of total U.S. GDP from 1990 to the present. The NIPA numbers are used here as opposed to appropriations or outlays to capture the actual periods when production occurs. The stories the chart tells are amazing.
The first is how much government spending fell during President Bill Clinton's eight years in office and how low it was when he left office. When he became president in 1992, government spending was 23.5% of GDP, and when he left in 2001 it was 19.5% of GDP. President Clinton, in conjunction with a solid Republican Congress, cut government spending by more than any other president in modern times, and oversaw one of the greatest periods of economic growth and prosperity in U.S. history.
Sadly for fiscal conservatives, the biggest surge in government spending came during the last two years of President George W. Bush's eight years in office (2007-2008). A weakened Republican president dealing with a strident Democratic Congress, led by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, resulted in an orgy of spending.
Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center appwill, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.
It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on.
Since this morning's Morning Briefing, we have discovered that the item regarding Brett McGurk in a rather compromising video cannot be corroborated. This rumor appears to have originated with Peter Van Buren, a foreign service officer who served in Iraq, though he did not name McGurk specifically in the rumor. Van Buren is now in a legal battle with the State Department over publication of his memoir. After searching, we are unable to find the video Van Buren referenced and therefore cannot corroborate the veracity of the story. In hindsight, I wouldn't have posted the item until I saw the evidence.
There remain concerns about Brett McGurk's qualifications, including critics who say he has a lack of knowledge and experience in broader Middle East issues and he may be seen as too close to embattled Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. He also has troubling questions about his personal relationships, as evidenced by racy emails from his government account.
Our concerns about his nomination still stand and we would urge the Senate to reject his nomination given that the concerns about his emails and the contents therein can be corroborated.
Not a day goes by these days that I don't hear more about Senator Marco Rubio's immigration plan and get asked my thoughts on it. The plan is just that - a plan. To my knowledge there is no legislative language yet. But from what I have heard I like the plan with some reservations.
I am to the left of many of RedState's readers when it comes to immigration. While I oppose the DREAM Act and amnesty, I have a moral problem with telling a child brought into the country by his or her parents and who has subsequently been raised here that the child, because of the parents' actions, must now be sent back from the only country the child has known.
I like most of what I've heard of Senator Rubio's plan, though I still have some substantive problems, including my foundational belief that we should pursue no plan until we have secured the border.
Nonetheless, I write not to praise or defend Senator Rubio's plan, but to point out that should the Republicans in Congress actually pursue this plan this year, they will have fully become the stupid party and do more than any Democrat Super PAC to aid in Barack Obama's re-election effort.
A party, now united behind Mitt Romney, will suddenly find itself yet again divided through self-inflicted wounds dealt by Senate Republicans who, at the same time, are more and more willing to also consider raising taxes.
Attorney General Eric Holder appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday morning to answer questions about several ongoing issues. These include the federal government's lawsuit against Florida to prevent the state from culling its voter rolls of noncitizens and others who legally don't belong, as well as the ongoing investigation (led in part by a Holder appointee and former Obama donor) into a recent spate of national security "leaks" within the administration (Holder noted that he had received "a serious interview" from "serious FBI agents" as a part of the investigation).
Perhaps most importantly, though, Holder was once again questioned about Operation Fast and Furious, a program specifically designed to sell guns to Mexican cartels and allow them to "walk" across America's southern border (without telling the Mexican government, by the way).
When observing the chaos that big union bosses have interleaved into the labor market, you instinctively think of the above-market wages that are forced upon employers (and taxpayers, in the case of public-sector unions) as a result of the monopolistic collective bargaining contracts. However, what is even more deleterious is the limitation on paying individual workers more than their contract dictates.
Believe it or not, under current labor laws, employers cannot pay individual employees more than their union contracts stipulate. Union contracts tend to reward seniority over merit and performance. This is part of our broader problem with collective bargaining laws. These laws disincentivize good performance on the job and reduce productivity. The egregious labor laws block any merit-pay system - the foundation of our free market system.

The taxing power of the states generally extends only to their individual borders: since the adoption of the U.S. Constitution, states have not been able to impose tax collection obligations on businesses that have no property or employees within the state.[1] In 2008, however, New York adopted a law that imposes such an obligation on a person or business with no physical presence in the state if it (1) enters into agreement with in-state resident involving commissions for referring potential customers; and (2) has gross receipts from sales by out-of-state companies from referrals within the state which total more than $10,000 in a 12-month period. The anti-hunting Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) and six other groups last week filed a lawsuit designed to pressure the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) into banning traditional ammunition containing lead components, an action that NSSF immediately responded to, saying it would intervene to represent the interests of industry, hunters and target shooters. Sharp partisan turn in fight over Obama national security leaks By Jeremy Herb
The fight over national security leaks in the Obama administration took a sharply partisan turn Tuesday with the introduction of a Senate resolution by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) calling for an independent investigation.
Republicans also sharply attacked President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) accusing the two of hypocrisy for calling for a special counsel during the Bush administration when the two were senators.
"All we're asking for is what Senator Obama and Senator Biden asked for in previous national security events involving corruption of the government," Graham said, referring to the Valerie Plame and Jack Abramoff cases.
"I guess the difference is we're supposed to trust Democratic administrations and you can't trust Republican administrations," Graham added.
McCain and Graham said on the Senate floor that a special counsel is necessary because of possible conflicts of interest from sources of the leaks within the Obama administration.
President Obama's statement that "the private sector is doing just fine" has been compared to Sen. John McCain's statement that the "fundamentals of the economy were sound" amidst the imploding credit markets in the fall of 2008. But a better analogy would be to compare it to Mitt Romney's gaffe from earlier this year, when the phrase "I don't care about the poor" was taken out of context to indicate his supposed heartlessness.

Israel's military victories were never the results of an inspired military or political leadership. While the anniversary of the Six-Day War has led to an outpouring of adoration for the usual suspects; the khaki-garbed generals striding victoriously through a carefully cropped photo, even if one of them had come down with a nervous breakdown not long before, Israeli generals have never been geniuses, the best-known ones have carried their own press releases into battle, and have walked a fine line between daring and criminal incompetence. Their victories were won for them by the men in the field, who survived to carry out their operations.

If Israeli generals are overrated, then Israeli governments are far worse, and, considering the number of generals who have played a role in politics, the confluence of the two conditions is not surprising. Israeli governments have, for the most part, been timid, cowardly and incompetent. (Which is to say that they were, for the most part, a lot like the governments of the rest of the West.)
The victories of the Six-Day War have for the most part been traded away by a succession of Prime Ministers in exchange for the promise of a peace that has yet to materialize. It is a miracle, nearly as great a miracle as the victory itself, that they were not actually traded away a week afterward.
The only political obstacle to the destruction of Israel by its politicians, has been the unwillingness of its enemies to accept its surrender. Western powers have repeatedly badgered Israeli leaders into giving up the store, only for Muslim leaders to turn up their noses and demand everything.
Israel's greatest strategic defeat did not happen in the Yom Kippur War in 1973, a war in which Israeli leaders, in conjunction with pressure from Washington D.C., crippled the military so badly that Israel was nearly destroyed. It happened in 1991, when Washington D.C. and Israeli Labor politicians finally talked Yasser Arafat into accepting Israel's surrender, while lying to the Israeli people about the terms of that surrender.
The Israeli fighting man was able to brave the largest tank battles in history, but his leaders could not manage to hang on to the country's national rights after the dead were buried and the wounded went home. No sooner do Israeli soldiers win a victory than their leaders rush to snatch it away from them and give it back, out of fear of what the world will think.
In 2003, a year before his death, Forbes Magazine placed Yasser Arafat on their list of the world's wealthiest kings and despots with a net worth of 300 million dollars. This number was on the low end of the estimates that had been made of the fortune of the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Israeli intelligence had estimated Arafat's net worth at 1.3 billion dollars and an audit conducted by American accountants, authorized by the Palestinian Authority, turned up 1 billion dollars in investments. While an exact number may never be arrived at, Time Magazine's report that Arafat's wife had received a 200,000-dollar-a-month allowance, gave one small glimpse into the lifestyles of the rich and infamous of the Palestinian Authority.
The Palestinian Authority books were a black hole with billions of dollars from Western and Muslim countries, bribes and foreign aid, going to a network of secret bank accounts and investment portfolios that not only financed terrorism, but also the lifestyles of the men at the top. The audits of the PA in the twilight days of Arafat and afterward were meant to reestablish the credibility of the Authority with foreign donors, while seizing control of the assets stockpiled by Arafat for the benefit of the new bosses.
Mahmoud Abbas, Arafat's successor, has been accused of hoarding a fortune of 100 million dollars and of owning palaces and property across the Middle East. Those accusations come from Mohammed Rashid, Arafat's former financial advisor, who knows the ins and outs of Palestinian Authority finances like no one else, and whose own net worth is estimated at being around half a billion dollars.

Barack Obama has been hitting the airwaves and campaign appearances hard and heavy with reports of Mitt Romney's time at Bain Capital. He points out how Romney was responsible for the closure of American Pad and Paper that left 250 people unemployed. He forgets to tell people how Romney saved so many other struggling companies like Staples and turned them around, saving hundreds jobs.
A recent report from The Daily Caller reveals that Obama's own private sector history reads much like the one he accuses Romney of. While working as an attorney for a Chicago law firm in early 1990s, Obama volunteered to work on a case involving several black residents who believed that they were being discriminated against by Citibank Federal Savings.

The Rio+20 conference will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from June 20 - 22. It is sponsored by the United Nations. The official name of the conference is U.N. Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD). More than 120 Heads of State have registered to attend, along with 50,000 others, including Mayors, representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) youth, and indigenous people.
Word is leaking out from behind closed doors that the conference is in huge trouble. The Rio+20 Preparatory Committee (charged with the task of preparing a final document that world leaders will sign at the conference) have so far failed to produce a final document. The main stumbling block is a provision that was agreed to at a previous conference held in Durban in which delegates agreed to establish a $100 billion Climate Fund. Cash-strapped industrial nations such as in the EU can't afford it. The stated purpose of the fund is for industrial (First world nations) to pay "reparations" to Third world nations that have been "damaged" by the climate change caused by first world pollution. The fact is this is simply an excuse for global redistribution of wealth. The policies being presented at Rio +20 will be disastrous to the world economy. The Academic Scandal Elizabeth Warren and Harvard Don't Want You to Know About
This secret report was accepted by University of Texas President William Cunningham. For two decades, Warren and her co-authors have claimed in academic circles that this report--never before made public--exonerated them.
But the central charge made by Professor Shuchman was neither investigated nor refuted in this secret report. Shuchman cited four specific criticisms of the 1989 book. It is the fourth and last complaint upon which charges of scientific misconduct hang.

Here are a few possible explanations for Obama's Did-he-really-say-that? comment at his Friday press conference ("The private sector is doing fine" at job creation):
1. The president is delusional - or is that pathological? 2. The president is so programmed by his handlers that he'll say anything on cue, no matter how bizarre or illogical. 3. Obama is a pod person - an extraterrestrial sent to earth to destroy the U.S. economy. Recall that the aliens in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" had the same emotional flatness, combined with a maniacal drive for destruction, as the president.
There was POTUS Pod Person telling us that hiring by business was "fine" and occurring at "a solid pace." The challenge now," he said, is to "make sure we continue to have a strong and robust recovery." Custer's last words: "I've got the Sioux surrounded. Now I have to make sure the 7th Cavalry stays strong and robust."
But, even in the fantasyland he's created, the president sees a storm cloud on the horizon.
While "our private sector has been doing a good job creating jobs ... The big challenge we have in our economy right now is that state and local hiring has been going in the wrong direction" - which for a doctrinaire leftist is anywhere but up, up and away.
Yes, tragically, teachers "police officers, cops (sic.) and firefighters" have been laid off. When liberals wail about government layoffs, it's always public safety that's taking the hit, not welfare workers, school administrators, IRS agents or the bureaucrats who enforce the 1001 mindless regulations that bedevil businesses and individuals.
We need more teachers for more functional illiteracy and classroom indoctrination (also lavish pensions and fringe benefits)!
The public sector is the only sector the president really cares about. He wants to see robustness in this sector alone - a growing government workforce which will soak up more of the nation's wealth and whose unions will dutifully fill Democratic campaign coffers. The National Education Association (the teachers' collective) gives 93% of its political contributions to Democrats.
Growth of the public sector is the health - not to mention the wealth - of the Democratic Party. That's why the White House orchestrated the Scott Walker recall election, then threw the Democrat in the race under the bus when polls showed Walker winning.
The unemployment rate is now 8.2%, up from 7.8% when Pod-Person-In-Chief took office. That's after $831 billion in stimulus spending - which Obama's corporate cronies, union supporters and interest groups like Planned Parenthood found very stimulating. Abortion and condoms (fewer workers and taxpayers) - that's the way to keep an economy humming.
The 2009 stimulus bill was guaranteed to take unemployment below 8%. Under the man who never held a real job before he took office (unless you count his stint as a community organizer - that's a laugh line) we now have the longest sustained period of 8%-plus unemployment since the Great Depression.
When he began his impersonation of a president, long-term unemployment was 2.6 million. Obama more than doubled that to 5.6 million .
The labor force participation rate - the percentage of potential workers actually employed - has fallen to 64.3%, the lowest level since 1981.
Under Obama, 5 million workers have given up hope of finding employment. Their numbers grew by 164,000 in March. Writing in Forbes, economist Peter Ferrara says the real unemployment rate is actually 11%. But our recovery is robust and everything's coming up roses, roses, roses.
In May, 69,000 new jobs were created nationwide - the fewest in nearly a year. To give you an idea of how pathetic that is, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the economy must create between 100,000 and 150,000 jobs a month just to keep up with population growth.
Job growth has averaged 89,000 a month for the entire Obama (quote) recovery (close quote). By comparison, in 1983-84, the last two years of his first term, and also coming out of a recession, under Reagan, job growth was 292,000 a month. Adjusted for population growth, that would be 375,000 a month today. But we're doing just fine - got that Sioux war-band right where we want 'em.
For those who have jobs, hourly compensation has been increasing at around 2% annually, half the pre-recession rate. In 2011, hourly wages inched up 1.4%, which Keith Hall, a senior research fellow at George Mason University, says is "the slowest rate of growth (in hourly wages) in 45 years." We're doing better than fine.
In Obama-land, 15.1% of the population (one in seven families) lives in poverty, the highest proportion since 1993. Among blacks, it's 27%, up from 25% in 2009. Since Inauguration Day 2009, the ranks of food-stamp recipients have increased 43% - from 31 million to 46 million. If we were doing any better, there would be guys selling apples on every street corner.
The president keeps breaking records. In his first term, federal spending averaged 24.4% of GDP. As a percentage of Gross Domestic Product, deficits are at the highest levels since World War II.
David Axelrod, one of the administration's senior schnauzers, charges that, as a corporate corsair, Romney took over companies, loaded them with debt, and left investors and workers holding the proverbial bag.
Loaded them up with debt? Coming from the spokesman for a president who increased the national debt from $10.6 trillion to $15.6 trillion, this is Comedy Central stuff. It took Bush (no deficit hawk) 8 years to add $5 trillion to the debt. Our little overachiever in the White House accomplished the feat in just three years.
We've only had four deficits in excess of $1 trillion - all under the man who promised, early in 2009, "And that's why today I'm pledging to cut the deficit we inherited by half by the end of my first year in office." The deficits of his predecessor averaged $410 billion a year, roughly a third of Obama's $1.29 trillion average deficit.
The average Bush deficit was 3.2% of GDP, compared to 8.3% under Obama.
The president has put us on a trajectory that could take the national debt beyond the earth's orbit. The CBO says that if current trends continue, by 2022, the national debt will hit 90% of America's total economic output that year (200% of GDP in 2037). By then, we'll make Greece look like a model of fiscal responsibility.
When he's not playing Professor Harold Hill shaking his straw boater at voters, Obama's election strategy has been, "Hey, look at the Mormon dude, over there! He's big trouble."
First, there was the Bain-of-my-existence attack. Supposedly, as a partner in Bain Capital in the 1990s, Romney's MO was to buy businesses, sell off the profitable parts and leave workers collecting unemployment.
This scenario hasn't gone over huge, even among Democrats. Clinton says the GOP nominee-to-be had "a sterling business career" - unlike the president, who never had any career outside of political office and political agitation.
By investing in businesses like Staples, Sports Authority and Domino's Pizza, Bain has been a net job creator, in the 100,000-range.
The new strategy has been to heap scorn on Romney's record as Massachusetts governor. "Under Gov. Romney, the Massachusetts economy was not at the top or even in the middle, but close to the bottom of all the states," says Axelrod. Why elect a man whose state was 47th out of 50 in economic development, when he ran it?
While true, this omits a few significant details. For his first two years in office, Obama had a Congress with Democratic super-majorities. In other words, he could do whatever he bloody well wanted - and did with Obama-care.
When Romney was governor, he had to work with a state legislature that was roughly 10% Republican. Years of Democratic dominance left the Massachusetts economy gasping for air. Think of Mike Dukakis, Tip O'Neill and Ted Kennedy.
Still, Romney managed to take the state's economic ranking form 49th to 47th, lower unemployment from 5.6% to 4.6%, close a $3 billion deficit he inherited and leave the state with a $2 billion surplus, without raising taxes. (He did raise fees.) During his tenure, 48,000 jobs were created.
At least the president is consistent: He lies about his opponent's record as well as his own.
Obama's actually thinks the voters will care more about the economic ranking of Massachusetts five year ago than about our basket-case economy today - that Romney's career as a venture capitalist can be used to distract the electorate from a 50% increase in the National Debt or the price of gas up over 100% since the national disaster took office.
The president doesn't get it. In the most crucial election of our lifetime, Barack Obama isn't running against Mitt Romney. He's running against himself - against his record - which increasingly looks like Custer's regiment after the Battle of the Greasy Grass.
Memo to Obama: It's your economy, stupid.

All razzing aside, it's blatantly apparent to anyone with two working brain cells, that Obama was simply pushed into endorsing same sex 'marriage' by his loose lipped VP. It's not the first, nor will it likely be the last time, that Joe Biden accidentally pushes his boss into taking a public stance that hurts him politically.
And hurt him, it did. He knew that it would, which is why he avoided taking that stance for as long as he did.

What would be Barack Obama's most important priority if he is reelected? In the latest edition of The New Yorker, Ryan Lizza devotes more than 9,500 words to this subject and tells us, "Obama has an ambitious second-term agenda... The President has said that the most important policy he could address in his second term is climate change."
Lizza suggests that Obama could pursue less controversial issues, but climate change would certainly be the most ambitious. Here's why.
Addressing climate change means some kind of a cap and trade scheme intended to fight global warming. Obama tried this once already, and it was such a radical idea that it couldn't pass the Senate even when Democrats had a super-majority of votes. And there's a good reason for that.
Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) once called cap and trade "a tax and it's a great big one." Warren Buffett described cap and trade as a "huge" and "regressive tax." A Harvard study found that Obama's cap and trade scheme could have led to $7.00 a gallon gas. Another study predicted that cap and trade could lead to skyrocketing food prices. And it will also cost thousands of jobs. Remember, Obama told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2008 that his cap and trade plan would "bankrupt" the coal industry and cause electricity rates to "necessarily skyrocket."
No one wants catastrophic global warming or environmental degradation. But that's exactly how the left has framed the debate. The questions we should consider are what is the science and what can we reasonably do about it?
Contrary to the claims of Al Gore and other liberals, the science is far from settled. Forty years ago, the cover of Time warned of the coming ice age that many experts predicted. Their alarmism didn't pan out then, so they're back with the new crisis of global warming.
The inconvenient truth for the alarmists is that the earth has experienced periods of climate change, warming and cooling, long before the combustion engine appeared on the scene. In fact, we've even detected global warming on Mars. Are SUVs to blame for that too?
But like so many other issues, whenever you hear "CRISIS!" out of Washington, the left's solution is always higher taxes, bigger government and more control over your life. That's just the way the liberal mind works. And that's just one more reason why we must defeat Barack Obama and elect a conservative majority to the Senate on November 6th!
Obama's Bad Month
As we have been detailing in these daily reports, June has been a terrible month for Barack Obama, and it's not even half over yet! But Dana Milbank, a liberal Washington Post columnist, compiled the bad news into one list and it's rather stunning to read all at once. For easier reading, I've bullet-pointed Milbank's list:
Job growth has stalled.
The Democrats have been humiliated in Wisconsin.
The attorney general is facing a contempt-of-Congress citation.
Talks with Pakistan have broken down.
Bill Clinton is contradicting Obama.
Mitt Romney is outraising him.
Democrats and Republicans alike are complaining about a "cascade" of national-security leaks from his administration.
And he is now on record as saying that the "private sector is doing fine."
Milbank adds, "This has been one of the worst stretches of the Obama presidency. In Washington, there is a creeping sense that the bottom has fallen out and that there may be no second term." Millions of Americans are hoping for change on November 6th!

Barack Obama will do anything for a vote. He'll pander to narrow constituencies. He'll attack churches. He'll divide people by sex, race and class. He'll blacklist news organizations. Marriage Matters
Recent court decisions striking down state marriage laws as discriminatory have relied on flimsy research that found little or no impact on children raised in same-sex households. Two new studies are calling that research into question and reigniting the debate over same-sex "marriage."
Professor Mark Regnerus of the University of Texas evaluated nearly 3,000 young adults on "40 measures of social, emotional and relationship outcomes." According to the Washington Times, he found that children raised by homosexual men had negative outcomes in 19 categories, while children raised by lesbians had negative outcomes in 24 out of 40 categories.
Professor Regnerus concedes that his study does not "tell us that same-sex parents are necessarily bad parents." But he insists that "The empirical claim that no notable differences exist must go." Ultimately, his study reaffirms that children do best when raised in stable homes with a mother and a father.
A second study by Assistant Professor Loren Marks of Louisiana State University sought to examine the research underpinning the American Psychological Association's support of same-sex parenting. Marks found several problems with the APA's research and concluded, "The lack of high-quality data leaves the most significant questions [about gay parenting] unaddressed and unanswered."
These new studies certainly won't end the culture war playing out in our courts and in the court of public opinion. But this much is clear: You don't need a PhD to know that children do best when raised by a mother and a father. Common sense, basic biology and thousands of years of human history make that abundantly clear.
But if the left insists on fundamentally redefining the institution of marriage, the foundation of healthy families and societies, then the left bears the burden of demonstrating that it is beneficial for the children likely to be involved in this radical experiment. These new studies clearly indicate that the militant homosexual movement is a long way from meeting that standard.
Reagan: Tear Down This Wall
Twenty-five years ago today, President Ronald Reagan delivered one of the defining speeches of his presidency. He traveled to Berlin, Germany, which was at that time a city divided by one of Soviet Communism's most visibly oppressive symbols -- the Berlin Wall.
Rather than seeking accommodation with the Soviets or rationalizing away the evil that wall represented, Ronald Reagan took a stand for freedom and boldly declared, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
That was the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union. Two years later, the Berlin Wall came down, and two years after that the Soviet Union collapsed as well.

"Voucher" is a fighting word in education, so it may be understandable that when Mitt Romney speaks about improving the nation's schools, he never uses that term.
Nonetheless, as president, Mr. Romney would seek to overhaul the federal government's largest programs for kindergarten through 12th grade into a voucherlike system. Students would be free to use $25 billion in federal money to attend any school they choose - public, charter, online or private - a system, he said, that would introduce marketplace dynamics into education to drive academic gains.

Several proposals are straight out of an Occupy Wall Street drum circle: the money-is-not-speech amendment and the corporations-are-not-people amendment. Other proposals actually focus on governing institutions: many favor direct election of the President and Vice President, others a universal voting rights amendments, and one suggested eliminating Congress and putting the people in charge. It's not clear how this new Constitution would function or how long it would last. But it is clear from this exercise that we are living in the legacy of the 1912 election.
The 1912 was a transformative election. It was a critical prelude to the New Deal. As Sidney Milks argues in his First Principles essay, the contest initiated important changes that redefined the meaning and practice of self-government in the United States away from representative institutions and toward a pure democracy.
Progressivism had been around since the late 1800s. It had a foothold in many states and among academics, including the Democratic Presidential candidate Woodrow Wilson. But the 1912 election elevated progressivism to the national scene. Former President Teddy Roosevelt had bolted from the republican party to become the leader and presidential candidate of the new Progressive party.Next week, June 18-22, is the centennial anniversary of the GOP convention, which denied Roosevelt the Republican presidential nomination and prompted him to create the Progressive Party.
Seeing Roosevelt's campaign as their best hope to advance a program of national transformation, an array of crusading reformers from Jane Addams to Herbert Croly joined the party. These reformers favored a variety of national regulations and social welfare measures-including minimum wage and maximum hours legislation, restraints on financial markets, and national health insurance. While many reformers disagreed about these measures and the critical issue of the national government's role in regulating the economy and society, one party doctrine unified the disparate strands of progressivism: the rule of the people.
Pure democracy meant removing the constitutional obstacles that obstructed the direct rule of the people. As Roosevelt put it in his "Confession of Faith:"
The people themselves must be the ultimate makers of their own Constitution, and where their agents differ in their interpretations of the Constitution the people themselves should be given the chance, after full and deliberate judgment, authoritatively to settle what interpretation it is that their representatives shall thereafter adopt as binding.
To achieve pure democracy, progressives pushed for several political reforms: 1) the universal use of the direct primary; 2) the ballot initiative, which would allow voters themselves to make laws; 3) the recall of public officials, which would allow voters to remove their representatives from office before their elected term had expired; and, 4) most controversially, popular referenda on laws that the state courts declared unconstitutional. The progressives also favored a strong presidency as a way to give authoritative expression to mass public opinion.
Sensing that pure democracy was the glue that held together the movement he sought to lead, Roosevelt made the cause of popular rule the centerpiece of his insurgent presidential campaign. Roosevelt's defense of direct democracy infused his campaign with deep constitutional significance and shaped the election so decisively that other presidential candidates were forced to speak out on the issue as well.
The Republican candidate, William Howard Taft, had been a member of TR's cabinet. Taft had supported TR's pragmatic progressive program, within existing constitutional boundaries and with the cooperation of the Republican Party. Pure democracy, however, rejected constitutional boundaries and the party apparatus. Moreover, it was contrary to the Founders' constitutional design. The Founders established a republic where representatives would "refine and enlarge the public views" and institutional devices such as the separation of powers and federalism allowed representatives to govern competently and fairly. Pure democracy meant establishing a direct relationship between public officials and mass public opinion. Therefore, pure democracy meant eliminating those intermediate institutions that refined, enlarged, and channeled the people's passions: including political parties, Congress, the states, and the Constitution. Taft would not let this happen. "The real usefulness of the Republican Party," Taft argued, "consisted in its conservative tendencies to preserve our constitutional system and prevent its serious injury."
Woodrow Wilson was the Democratic candidate, and ardent progressive, and his campaign stump speech was "What is Progress?". In TR fashion, Wilson attempted to make the President the embodiment of popular will and administrative agencies the stewards of the people. But he did not embrace the entire pure democracy program: Wilson was sympathetic to the decentralized state courts and political parties.
The 1912 election brought progressivism to the forefront of our national politics and challenged voters to think seriously about the Constitution. The pure democracy agenda was a fundamental departure from the decentralized republic that had prevailed since the early part of the 19th century. The 1912 election did not completely remake American democracy, but it marked a critical way station on the long road to do so. In a certain very real sense, Roosevelt won the election of 1912. The causes he championed with extraordinary panache still live on today.

Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security, or the rights of property; and have, in general, been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.
Unions suffered a resounding defeat in Wisconsin last week. They're far from down and out, however. Unable to reverse their decline in membership under existing law, they are circumventing Congress and using the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to create an entirely new type of union. A new rule hatched by the Obama-appointed board, authorizes the creation of union cells-organizing a few employees within a company to gain a foothold-which will severely impact businesses.
Until recently, employees organized based on shared job characteristics-for example, all the hourly employees at a firm. The new practice allows micro-unions representing only a small minority of workers in a company. Instead of a grocery store's employees having a union, the store could face separate unions for cashiers, shelf-stockers, and janitors.
The NLRB permitted this in its Specialty Healthcare decision last year, allowing organized labor to form unions by job title. A decision last month by one of the NLRB's regional directors demonstrated just how harmful-and absurd-a policy this is. The regional director green-lit a union election at the Bergdorf Goodman department store. But most employees will not get to vote; only shoe salesmen will cast ballots. Not all shoe salesmen, however. Only those selling women's shoes.
The fact that hours, benefits (including the same health plans), and general productivity goals were common among all employees was dismissed because, among other reasons, the sale of women's shoes 'requires a distinct skill set from other sales associates due to the unique nature of the product they are selling.'
While the men's shoe salesmen-or any other type of salesmen-at the store will not get a say in the union's presence, these excluded workers will share in all the risks and downsides of unionizing. Strikes will also harm them, and if the union bankrupts the company, they will also lose their jobs.
With private-sector union membership down to 7 percent, labor leaders are desperate. Even the government unions are seeing workers quit en mass-when they have a choice. Columnist Charles Krauthammer described this lesson in Wisconsin:
Without the thumb of the state tilting the scale by coerced collection, union membership became truly voluntary. Result? Newly freed members rushed for the exits. In less than one year, AFSCME, the second-largest public-sector union in Wisconsin, has lost more than 50 percent of its membership.
Labor leaders and the NLRB have made several attempts to curb workers' rights in recent years. They have tried to take away the secret ballot in union elections and to shorten the amount of time workers have to decide on unionizing. They have threatened to demand access to workers' email addresses and phone numbers in workplaces that are targeted for unionization. The NLRB itself has its own scandals and has served as a revolving door for union big shots.
The board's tactics are in step with the Obama Administration's penchant for skipping Congress completely.
"The recent decision at Bergdorf Goodman is an example of the labor board's doing through regulation what we ought to be doing through legislation on the floor of the Senate," said Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA), who introduced legislation last year that would reverse the NLRB's decision on the so-called micro-unions.
The practice will have devastating consequences for businesses and workers alike. Management could face contract negotiations with multiple union cells under one roof, which "increases the likelihood of industrial unrest and workplace disputes as different unions with differing goals represent different employees," said Fred Wszolek of the Workforce Fairness Institute.
In addition to divided workplaces, workers will face diminished professional opportunities. As Heritage's James Sherk has explained, "Over time, unions destroy jobs in the companies they organize. In manufacturing, three-quarters of all union jobs have disappeared over the past three decades, while the number of non-union jobs has increased."
With organized labor cells, workers would be stuck in their current roles without the chance to advance through departments. Fragmenting the workplace into multiple bargaining units will make it very difficult for workers to work their way up through departments. They wouldn't have the opportunities that Joe McFarland had when he took an hourly job at Home Depot in 1993.
McFarland started out working in the electrical aisle. Over the next 20 years, he learned all he could about other departments in the store, worked hard-and got promoted. He rose from his hourly job to Western Division President, where he now oversees more than 440 stores and 78,700 employees in 13 states.
If the electrical aisle employees had chosen to unionize, McFarland could have been stuck there. He wouldn't have had the opportunity to train across departments and move up into management.
But big labor's strategy isn't about growing skills and advancing careers. It's about grasping for any amount of power-and union dues-they can grab.
Feulner has been essential to the growth of the conservative movement, Bradley Foundation president Michael Grebe said in a statemet. "Under his guidance, The Heritage Foundation has become a bastion of ideas that are an integral part of the national conversation and that have shaped public policy."
He also lavished praise on Meese, who served as Ronald Reagan's attorney general and now chairs Heritage's Center for Legal and Judicial Studies as Heritage's Ronald Reagan Distinguished Fellow in Public Policy. "His entire career has involved upholding the rule of law and making the nation more secure," Grebe said.

Greta Hawkins, principal of Edna Cohen School (PS 90) in New York, has decided on her own that kindergarteners displaying American patriotism would be offensive.
She has single-handedly banned Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" from the graduation ceremonies scheduled for June 20.
It doesn't matter that students in five classes spent months learning the patriotic song, or that the students practiced waving American flags in unison to promote love of country.
According to The New York Post, it was to be the rousing finale of their musical show at the June 20 commencement. The kids, dressed up for their big day, would each wave a tiny American flag - which, as the lyrics proclaim, "still stands for freedom." But Hawkins marched in on a recent rehearsal and ordered a CD playing the anthem to be shut off, staffers said.
But Justin Bieber's flirty song about teen romance, "Baby," was deemed a fine selection for the show. Hawkins had no problem with 5-year-olds singing lines such as, "Are we an item? Girl, quit playing."
In response to public pressure, New York Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott removed Beiber's inappropriate song from the program, but stood by the principal's anti-American rebuff of Greenwood's "God Bless the USA."
FoxNews stated state school officials made no indication Hawkins would reinstate the Greenwood song, which Hawkins nixed because she reportedly "did not want to offend other cultures."
