Politics Special Report - George Soros: Godfather of the Left
Posted on June 4, 2012
This is a special report by the Media Research Center (MRC) that's been cross-posted on The Blaze. The original by Dan Gainor and Iris Somberg appears on the MRC website. You can get a condensed version of the in-depth report by reading the executive summary here.
Say the name George Soros and liberals see dollar signs - literally. The world's 22nd richest man, according to Forbes, is now worth $20 billion. But Soros isn't just noteworthy for the money he has - he's notable for the money he has given away. Since launching his Open Society Foundations in 1984, Soros has donated more than $8 billion to charities around the world.
But instead of gaining a mighty reputation for his philanthropy, or his investment prowess, Soros is reviled abroad and criticized here in his adopted country. Most everywhere Soros, his foundations or his investing have gone, trouble has followed. He's helped foment revolutions, undermined national currencies and funded radicals around the world. Soros has been convicted of insider dealing in France and fined $3 million, fined another $2 million in his native Hungary. His "foundations have been accused of shielding spies and breaking currency laws" and his investing strategy has been targeted for harming several national currencies.
Top EPA Official Inadvertently Tells The Truth About the White House's Environmental Agenda
The Blaze | by Mytheos Holt | Posted on June 4, 2012 at 9:42pm
Back in 1992, in his speech to the Republican National Convention, Pat Buchanan railed against the "environmental extremists who put birds and rats and insects ahead of families, workers, and jobs."
This was widely seen as an unfair caricature of liberal environmental policy in 1992. In 2012, it's practically a bloodless statement of fact.
The Obama administration's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has, in fact, been doing its best to validate this description, either through policy or highly revealing slips of the tongue
It's easy to dismiss New York City Mayor Bloomberg's latest nanny state hiccup as the control-freak antics of a powerful man --but that would be missing the point. Bloomberg did not come up with the idea of banning sodas during a spa session on his private island. His implementation of it may be more overtly obnoxious, but the idea that there is a national health crisis that can only be solved by getting people to stop eating sugary foods, is ubiquitous among social policy wonks and national experts on telling people what to do.
In 2007, a conference on obesity was held at George Washington University, sponsored by the Stop Obesity Alliance and the Obesity Association. The Stop Obesity Alliance may sound like a silly afterthought of a group, but its steering committee members include AHIP, the trade group for the health insurance industry; AMGA, the trade association for health care groups; SEIU, one of the largest unions in the country; and NBGH, a business health group representing major companies like Apple, FedEx, Kellogg, Unilever and Walmart.
It was no wonder then that virtually every Democratic and Republican candidate running for office either showed up in person, or sent a proxy to explain how their administration was going to fight obesity.
"The next president must commit to fighting America's obesity problem and possess the experience to win the fight," Governor Bill Richardson said, and vowed to make fighting obesity one of his top priorities.
You might be laughing, but don't. The obesity epidemic buzzword has penetrated every major company, as well as every level of government and academia. That translates into a policy bulldozer with private-public partnerships that will control every aspect of your life.
When think-tanks convince corporations that they're losing money because of obesity, they sponsor trade associations that invite politicians down to explain what they're going to do about it. Health insurance companies have crunched the numbers and decided that they can save billions if the government manages to make people lose weight. Corporations that employ a lot of people and pay for their health insurance think they can save a fortune on health insurance if employee obesity is cut. They have their own employee incentives, but mostly they want the government to do something about it.
Why do you think the 2012 election came down to a race between ObamaCare and RomneyCare? Because the power players agree that we need national health care; they only disagree over what kind of national health care we need. Just like they agree that we need "immigration reform", tolerance for Islam and a War on Terror that doesn't disrupt international trade. We don't need those things, but they do, and they are determined to force them down our throats.
Please forgive our resending this email, but we've been advised that in our initial email we listed the wrong email address for Secretary of State Detzner. The email has been corrected below.
And while we're updating information...MoveOn.org just sent out an email advising all their followers to call Governor Scott, because "We have just 24 hours to make sure Governor Rick Scott stops his all-out assault on Florida's Latino voters." Now, not only will Governor Scott's email inbox be full of MoveOn generated emails, his phone will be ringing off the wall with callers telling him to abandon his efforts and allow Florida's rolls to remain bloated beyond recognition.
The Department of Justice has ORDERED Florida NOT to remove non-citizens from the state's voter rolls. Yes, you read that right - and you can read more sordid details here and here.
Florida's Governor, Secretary of State, and Local Supervisors of Elections are now facing enormous pressure from the Federal government, so it is incredibly important that they hear from citizens across the country, encouraging them to stand strong.
We're asking you to join us, and patriot groups across Florida, as we work together to FLOOD the GOV with emails of support!
Every day this week, please send a short email to Florida's Governor and Secretary of State, in support of Free and Fair elections. When you write - tell personal stories. If you have witnessed voter fraud or seen issues in the polls, write about it. If you believe maintaining accurate voter rolls should be a priority, let them know. Always be cordial and polite - remember the media will be watching.
Because of Florida's "sunshine laws" on transparency, all elected officials' emails are public documents, so the MEDIA monitors these emails. Yes, the same media folk who are busily spinning a false narrative about Florida, demonizing them for daring to uphold election integrity and trying to sway public opinion against the state. These spinsters are closely monitoring the Governor's emails, along with the emails of the Secretary of State and Supervisors of Elections, to guage public response is. Special interests and vote fraud deniers will be out in droves; we need to FLOOD the GOVernment with emails that offset the deluge of email being sent by these groups.
The State of Florida must respond to the Department of Justice by tomorrow. Time is of the essence. If you believe having 180,000 non-citizens on Florida's voter rolls is unacceptable, then take 5 minutes to both email and call Governor Scott and let him know you stand with Florida, in their effort to uphold election integrity.
Our goal is for thousands of emails to reach the inboxes of Governor Scott and Secretary Detzner, supporting Florida and encouraging them to stand strong against the Feds.
Fellow patriots, there is a battle raging over our electoral process and the sanctity of our vote; the victor wins our country. Do not sit on the sidelines. Please email and call Governor Scott now.
FLOOD THE GOVernment -- send emails every day -- do not remain silent!
If our elections are not truly fair, we are not truly free....

NATIONWIDE RALLY FOR YOUR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS!
There is a mandate in the healthcare bill that orders people to abide by certain government orders even if they are in conflict with your religious beliefs. This applies to all citizens, therefore, is an enforcement by government on every citizen no matter what their choice of religion is. The mandate forces various religious institutions to provide contraceptive medicine, abortion medicines, and other women's pharmaceuticals to employees even if it is against their religious beliefs. This HHS mandate rips our First Amendment to shreds and it is already law. Come out and stand with others across our nation for your First Amendment rights.

3) The Wisconsin recall vote of Gov Scott Walker is next week, June 5.
The Tea Party Army is on the ground in Wisconsin and working hard. Liberal idiot DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has declared this recall election as a dry run for the November election. If the left wins this, it will empower them for November. If they lose, it will take some wind out of their sails. PLEASE DONATE to the Tea Party Patriots' voter education work up there. We grassroots groups don't have the Union and Washington-funding that the left has. Please click here to donate what you can.

5) We as a group won't be doing First Fridays this year.
It's under new "ownership" and participation has increased in price dramatically from last year. It's not financially tenable or worth our effect at $60/night plus the requirement of insurance and stuff. We'll come up with a different, freer way of answering people's questions.
Tom Smith's background is a common one in Pennsylvania and across the country, but one that is all too rare in the United States Senate-which may explain a great deal about how our country came to this point in our history.
Tom still lives on the farm in Armstrong County where he grew up. After graduating from Elderton High School in 1965, he postponed college to help his father tend that farm and supplemented his income by driving a school bus. Before too long, Tom had married his high school sweetheart, Saundy, started a family, and went to work in a local surface coal mine.
In 1989, Tom entered the coal business himself, mortgaging everything he had in the hope that he could build a better life for himself and his family. He succeeded, building a series of companies in a highly regulated industry through some tough economic times. When he sold the companies in 2010, they were mining more than a million tons of coal a year and employed over one-hundred people.

"Conservatism is not about leaving people behind. Conservatism is about allowing people to catch up." (Marco Rubio)
There are very few politicians that have risen to national prominence as quickly as Marco Rubio. At age forty-one there is huge interest in and speculation about his political future. Will he be tapped by Mitt Romney to be his running mate? Will he run for President in 2016?
His story is detailed in his new book 'An American Son." Rubio is the son of parents who fled Cuba in the 1950's. Using the work ethic and tenacity instilled in him by his parents and grandfather, Rubio earned a law degree. As a young attorney he ran for the West Miami City Commission, a role that led to the Florida House of Representatives. In just six years he rose to Speaker of the House and became a leading advocate for free enterprise, better schools, limited government, and a fairer, simpler tax system. He found that he could connect with people across party lines while still upholding conservative values.
His U.S. Senate campaign started as an extreme long shot againstFlorida's popular incumbent governor, Charlie Crist. Rubio traveled the state with his message of empowerment and optimism. He upset Crist in both the primary and a dramatic three-way general election, after Crist quit the GOP to run as an independent.
Now Rubio speaks on the national stage about the challenges we face and the better future that's possible if we return to our founding principles. As he puts it , "Conservatism is not about leaving people behind. Conservatism is about allowing people to catch up."
In that vision, as in his family's story, Rubio proves that the American Dream is still alive for those who pursue it.
Tickets are $25.00 and include a hard cover copy of his brand new book 'An American Son."
By allowing our attention to be focused exclusively on the danger and prevention of terrorism, we ignore the many other ways we are being attacked. Specifically, we are missing what our Islamist enemies call their 'civilization jihad' - a form of warfare that employs manipulative financial techniques, lawfare, infiltration of our civil institutions and government and insidious information dominance. Together, these have the effect of exploiting our liberties and governing structures against us, so that our leaders wind up imposing the very anti-American values that our enemies promote.
Welcome to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within - a 10-part, web-based video briefing that is designed to explain why and how this is happening.
It addresses a threat most Americans are unaware even exists within our country, let alone the degree of peril it represents. The threat is the totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine its adherents call "shariah" and the organized, disciplined and increasingly successful efforts by such adherents-- most especially the Muslim Brotherhood-- to bring it here.
We are making this course available in the hope of encouraging, informing and broadening support for national efforts to defeat the insinuation into this country of shariah's anti-constitutional and seditious program.

Dinesh D'Souza - Obama & 2016
A Special Message from Americans United for Freedom Contributor KrisAnne Hall
Heading into the most important election of our lifetime, Barack Obama and a terrified Congress want to make sure angry Americans can never again gather en mass to change the course of history as we did with the 1.2 million member 912 March and the demonstrations that flipped Congress in 2010. No, our tyrannical politicians want to force you to stay home and shut up.
The protected right of the people peaceably to assemble is unalienable, something that has afforded deep fundamental and historical foundations to our freedom. Our Founders established a clear "no trespassing sign" via our First Amendment to keep the government away from this God-given right essential to Liberty. "Congress shall make no law abridging...the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." But new legislation has been passed in Congress that will destroy this absolutely central, simple and non-negotiable right imperative to a free people.
HR 347 and S 1794, the "Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011" has nothing to do with improving landscaping around federal buildings. This bill is being presented as a No Trespassing bill. Reasonable people understand that lawful restrictions and protections are needed for government officials and government functions. However, this legislation makes it a federal crime to allegedly DISRUPT the "ORDERLY CONDUCT" of government.
The violator doesn't have to be physically on the grounds where the government business is being conducted, just within the vicinity of the self-proclaimed "business of government." The law is not limited to buildings or locations as the title suggests, but seems to be "roving" and follows persons protected by Secret Service wherever they may go.
Standing on a sidewalk with a sign as a Congressman walks by? BUSTED
Traffic slowing to read your Tea Party signs? BUSTED
Make a statement at a town hall meeting that your Congressman doesn't like? BUSTED
1752(a)(2) knowingly, and with intent to impede or disrupt the orderly conduct of government business or official functions, engages in disorderly or disruptive conduct in, or within such proximity to, any restricted building or grounds when, or so that, such conduct, in fact, impedes or disrupts the orderly conduct of Government business or official functions;
1752(a)(3) knowingly, and with the intent to impede or disrupt the orderly conduct of Government business or official functions, obstructs or impedes ingress or egress to or from any restricted building or grounds;
1752(c)(1) the term 'restricted buildings or grounds' means any posted, cordoned off, or otherwise restricted area - (B) of a building or grounds where the President or other person protected by the Secret Service is or will be temporarily visiting; or C) of a building or grounds so restricted in conjunction with an event designated as a special event of national significance;
The right protected in the First Amendment is the right to peaceably assemble. We do not have the right to impede the flow of traffic, either on sidewalks or roadways. We do not have the right to impede anyone's business practices. But this law is not about private business, it is about government operations. Make that Big Brother Government Operations.
This Congress has a habit of writing in vague and overbroad terms; yet, in order for laws to be Constitutionally sound they CANNOT be vague and overbroad in ANY aspect, and they can ONLY interfere with the rights of the people in as narrow a capacity as both necessary and according with Constitutional principle. But this law makes it a crime to disrupt the government. The Supreme Court has said this type of broad language gives too much power to the government, and they have been saying this since 1939. This law actually places the desire of the government to be free from disruption unconstitutional power over the right of the people to redress the government of their grievances.
Suppose your Congressman, who is under Secret Service protection, has a town hall meeting and many members of the community show up to challenge him on his voting record. This law could be construed to allow federal charges to be brought against these citizens for disrupting his town hall meeting by attending and demanding to be heard under the First Amendment. After all, it will not be hard to claim that people who are not happy with the Congressman's voting record had the "intent" to disrupt this meeting. This vague and overbroad language has the potential to ultimately prevent people from gathering outside any government building or politician's function for fear of being charged with a federal offense. In Constitutional law, we call that a "chilling effect" and the Supreme Court has always held these restrictions to be unconstitutional. After all, who can afford to risk going to jail, to carry a record of federal arrest, to stand for their rights - even if they will win?
The right to orderly conduct of government is NOT a constitutionally protected right. However we DO have the right to free speech and the right to peaceably assemble. Our Constitution enshrines in government the fundamental principle of protection for our God-given, unalienable rights freely to speak and assemble. These rights of We the People are held as foundation stones of our individual Liberty and the government must protect these rights, not limit them. And throughout history, our Supreme Court has protected these rights.
Hague v. CID, 307 U.S. 496 (1939)
Boos v. Barry, 485 U.S. 312, 318 (1988)
United States v. Grace, 461 U.S. 171, 177 (1983)
Educ. Ass'n v. Perry Local Educators' Ass'n, 460 U.S. 37, (1983)
In every single case, the Court ruled that the people's First Amendment right to protest fundamentally outweighs the government's right to avoid uncomfortable situations at which politicians may be called to account for their actions.
People have the right to complain, the right to have their voices be heard, the right to redress their grievances in the form of protests. These actions are supposed to make the government take notice. Disruption cannot be the standard to stop speech. To allow the government to create this new standard allows the government to tell us to sit down and shut up.
The chilling effect occurs not in the fact that you are denied your due process. If you are arrested because of unlawful legislation you can fight the prosecution and even sue the government for violating your rights. If the Supreme Court has not become completely corrupted you have fairly good odds of winning. But, as anyone who has been wronged by a government agency can tell you, a victory will often come at the expense of a ruined life and livelihood.
The bottom line is that there are laws in every municipality that punish Trespass, Disorderly Conduct, Assault, and any other crime involving real threats against government and persons in government. Why do we need a vague and overbroad FEDERAL LAW to enforce laws that are already in effect, when that law could encroach on our God-given, protected rights? William Penn said, "Necessity, it is said, is the plea for every infringement of human Liberty; it is the argument of tyrants and the creed of slaves." Clearly, we don't need a "Federal Trespass Bill." We already have one; it's called the Bill of Rights!
When will we have enough of government intrusion on our Constitutionally protected rights? We were outraged because we are Taxed Enough Already. When will we recognize that if we cannot trust the government with our finances, then we certainly cannot trust the government with our Liberty?

The U.S. Constitution
A Reader
Featuring 113 primary source documents, The U.S. Constitution: A Reader was developed for teaching the core course on the U.S. Constitution at Hillsdale College.
Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.
Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."
Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs.
Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012.

In the coming months, critical decisions are going to be made about Iran, Israel and the world. Finally, Washington is beginning to focus on the issue of a nuclear Iran. Many of our leaders want to confront this looming threat. But others want to keep kicking the can down the road. The debate is far from over.
We know that when thousands of CUFI activists arrive in DC and on Capitol Hill, we can change the conversation.
We can remind our leaders that a nuclear Iran is not only a threat to Israel, but to the US as well. And we can demonstrate to our elected officials that their constituents care enough about this issue to show up at their DC offices.
We know that we can create a sense of immediacy that's otherwise lacking.
We know that the more of us who show up and speak out -- the louder our voice and the greater our impact.
Tonight, Sunday June 3rd, CUFI Founder and Chairman, Pastor John Hagee, will be announcing an exciting new CUFI initiative. You can click here to watch it live at 7:30 PM Eastern (6:30 PM Central, 5:30 PM Mountain, 4:30 PM Pacific). This link will not be live until 7:30 PM Eastern (6:30 PM Central, 5:30 PM Mountain, 4:30 PM Pacific) tonight.
Tonight, Pastor Hagee will be announcing the creation of the Israel Defense Fund. This emergency fund will enable CUFI to meet the major challenges we anticipate in the coming months.
CUFI has accomplished great things for Israel. But the times in which we live demand that we do even more -- and do so now!
We need to do more to defend Israel in the public square and in the media. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to purchase more pro-Israel billboards across America as well as full-page newspaper ads as circumstances demand.
We need to do more to defend Israel on our college campuses. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to train even more students and hold even more pro-Israel events on campuses across the country.
We need to do more to defend Israel before our leaders. The Israel Defense Fund will enable us to be more active than ever in educating our nation's leaders about the justice of Israel's cause.
Even if you can't watch the broadcast, don't miss out on the opportunity to be part of the Israel Defense Fund! Click here now to contribute.
We will not be silent. Together, we will do more than ever to stand up and speak up for Israel.
May God Bless You and Those that You Love,

The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:
Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care
The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:
For Tea Parties, this can be used as basic ammunition for letters to the editor, columns for your local news outlet, handouts at public events, emailing the pdf to our elected reps as well as to members, friends and neighbors.
This appears to be an excellent resource; let's make use of it.

Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center appwill, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.
It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on.
Last night in Wisconsin, Democracy died because Republicans spent a bunch of money and Wisconsin saw record voter turnout levels across the state where they decisively sided with the incumbent Republican Governor against the ongoing childish assault on representative democracy by leftists unhappy with the hand the voters dealt them in 2010. Or something like that.
Remember, the left was perfectly fine with money in politics when they thought Barack Obama was going to raise $1 billion with which he would bludgeon the GOP. Now that it is not happening, money in politics is again evil. It is no coincidence that the left seized on this talking point even before the polls closed. They think it sells well. But it doesn't. Remember in 2010, they tried to claim the Chamber of Commerce was spending foreign money to help the GOP? Lot of good it did them then.
These are also the same people who once told us the Wisconsin recall was a harbinger of GOP overreach and voter retaliation would ensue. Suddenly, the recall means nothing according to these same people. The Chairwoman of the Democratic Party once called last night a "dry run" for the general election. Heh.
Last night in Wisconsin, despite a disastrous run of exit polling, made more difficult by the dynamics of a recall election, Scott Walker handily beat Tom Barrett. What exit polls suggested would be a close race turned into a romp. The left has resorted to screaming about money in politics. What they cannot reconcile is that, most likely, were Barack Obama and MItt Romney on the ballot tonight as well as the Walker v. Barrett race, Barack Obama would have won despite all the GOP money pouring in.
I maintain that special elections mean very little to general elections. The flawed exit polls were flawed because people who vote in recall elections vote in different ways from general elections. There was a massive union vote in Wisconsin last night. We can conclude that Scott Walker winning big with a big union turnout means even private sector union members hate public sector unions. But we should be careful not to over conclude things based on Wisconsin.
Republicans around the country should take note of that. While I maintain recalls and special elections are not really good indicators of anything beyond the dynamics of those races, there are a few things Wisconsin tells us that do bode ill for President Obama and that are easy to conclude.

You've gotta wonder about someone who can draw any kind of equivalence between these two programs. Maybe that's the difference between a community organizer and a businessman.
Recent reports of al Qaida infiltration of the Syrian resistance have strengthened our national reluctance to intervene in the slow-motion train wreck that is the Syrian civil war. After all, we hardly want to be in the position of arming our enemies (that didn't go so well with the Mexican drug cartels), and should they be successful an al Qaida backed regime is one of the few things that would be worse than the Assad thugocracy that has oppressed Syria for so long.
Furthermore, our options are limited at best. All the high hopes pinned to Kofi Annan's diplomatic effort to broker a cease-fire have been dashed. Despite international outcry over ongoing atrocities such as the Houla massacre, there now seems to be little we can do beside plead with Vladimir Putin to get his buddy Bashir al-Assad to stop slaughtering his civilian population.
Over the past few weeks, we've been hit with a torrent of negative economic news, portending a prolonged period of stagnation for the foreseeable future. While most recessions end with a period of robust growth and job creation, this recovery has been stymied by odious regulations and a cloud of uncertainty painted dark black with Obama's anti-business policies. Naturally, the response from Democrats is to impose even more regulations. This time they plan to tap one of their favorite tools; wage controls.
Harry Reid is planning to bring the "Paycheck Fairness Act" (S. 3220) to the floor today. Behind this mellifluous sounding name rests a plethora of onerous paperwork for small businesses, a strong disincentive to hire women, and a Pandora's box of class action lawsuits designed to enrich the trial lawyers - a group that happens to be prolific donors to the Democrat Party.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) at the request of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee evaluated federal subsidies received by the various energy industries for fiscal year 2011.[i] The agency found that energy-related subsidies totaled $24 billion, of which $16 billion were spent on renewable energy and energy efficiency and $2.5 billion on fossil fuels in fiscal year 2011. In other words, renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency programs received 6.4 times more subsidies than fossil fuels received. The ethanol industry, which received over $6 billion, was the single largest renewable energy recipient and the wind industry was the second largest renewable energy recipient, according to CBO.[ii]

While a common recourse for revenue is to raise targeted taxes on unpopular groups, such as smokers (cigarette taxes), drinkers (liquor taxes), gamblers (lotteries, slots and casinos), eaters (fat taxes, meal taxes, and soda taxes) and high-income earners (taxes on "luxuries" and "millionaires," which can scare off revenue rather than collecting it), recent trends indicate an increasing dissatisfaction with such revenue-shifting.

1.6 Trillion Dollars More Debt: Fiscal Conservatives Have Been Raped By The Republican Party
What the Republican Party has done to fiscal conservatives over the past year and a half has been a betrayal so vast that it is difficult to find words to describe it. Back in 2010, the Tea Party was riding high and a flood of new Republicans was sent to the U.S. House of Representatives in one of the greatest landslides in U.S. political history. On election night 2010, more House seats changed hands than in another other election since 1948.
The average price of a gallon of regular gas is now $3.66, and has been decreasing for eight straight weeks. This is causing some of the President Obama's advisors to declare energy prices an irrelevant issue. Political advisor David Axelrod recently tweeted: "Gas prices have been going down for the past six weeks. You think the GOP will blame the President?"
"There is unanimity that the male apostate must be put to death."
Liberal talk show host Tawfiq Okasha recently appeared on "Egypt Today," airing a video of Muslims slicing off a young man's head off for the crime of apostasy -- in this instance, the crime of converting to Christianity and refusing to renounce it. The video-be warned, it is immensely graphic-can be seen here (the actual execution appears from minute 1:13-4:00). For those who prefer not to view it, a summary follows:
If you are searching for proof of the success of stealth jihad, then look no further than the Islamists' success in becoming partners with law enforcement agencies eager to reach out to the Muslim community.
Los Angeles should be particularly embarrassed by an exposé by the Investigative Project on Terrorism published on June 1. The current round of class warfare taking place in this country can hardly be called that because it is taking place within a single class. This is no great conflict between the construct of a 1 and 99 percent, this is a civil war taking place within the 1 percent. The very name of the Buffett Rule makes that all too obvious. When your class warfare bid relies on 1 percenters like Warren Buffett and Elizabeth Warren, then what you have isn't a class war, it's an internal conflict among some of the wealthiest Americans over whether the future lies with an all-encompassing state or a looser libertarian system.
Not much really needs to be said in this particular column. For decades, Americans have been speculating about what takes place behind the closed doors of the secret meetings of the Bilderberg Group. This weekend, the group is holding its annual meeting at a Virginia Marriott Hotel. Forty-eight American citizens are named by the group as attending that meeting.

Victory in Georgia! By Guy Rodgers, Executive Director
To every chapter leader, member, volunteer and donor, I have a message for you:
Your support and your efforts continue to pay off!
Our latest victory report comes from the state of Georgia.
Chapter leader Mike Midas led a successful effort to get the following language included in the Georgia Republican Party platform:
A Resolution opposing the use of Sharia Law in Georgia Courts
WHEREAS, Article VI defines the Constitution as the supreme law of the land.
BE IT RESOLVED that the Georgia Republican Party supports legislation to prohibit any court, administrative agency or other tribunal from enforcing a Sharia law in Georgia courts if doing so would violate a right guaranteed to Georgia citizens.
This is no small deal. It sends a clear message to Republican elected officials in Georgia that the GOP grassroots want action on sharia law.
You may recall that just a few weeks ago the Kansas legislature overwhelmingly passed its version of "American Laws for American Courts" (ALAC).
ACT! for America led that grassroots effort that resulted in over 30,000 phone calls and emails to Kansas state legislators!
In 1978 I attended my first political party state convention. Since then I have worked in dozens of political campaigns, grassroots organizations, and non-profit organizations.
Based on over 30 years of experience, one thing I can say with absolute certainty-the kinds of victories ACT! for America continues to win don't "just happen."
Imagine for a moment if Brigitte Gabriel had never launched ACT! for America. There would be no chapters. No grassroots network. No "central nervous system" organizing and distributing information and resources. No national grassroots organization fighting the threat of radical Islam. No lobbyist on Capitol Hill.
And no victories.
Friends, this is a team effort-and in this struggle, there is no substitute for victory. We're winning these victories because we have a nationwide TEAM that is working together. Some people give their time. Some give their money. But none of us, not even Brigitte, can do this alone.
We recently launched our Spring Pledge Drive with an appeal for $11 monthly gifts and $37 single gifts. This fundraising drive is absolutely critical to our continued successes in pushing back against radical Islam.
We don't have Saudi Arabia's petro-dollars to fund what we do. We don't have a George Soros doling out tens of millions of dollars to us. We are dependent on every contribution, no matter how large or small. These contributions put the "gas" in the ACT! for America "tank."
These contributions make it possible for us to do what we do. Without them, the "car" known as ACT! for America would grind to a halt.
You may not think an $11 a month Patriot Partner gift would make much of a difference. But imagine if 300 people who were able to make such a monthly gift thought the same thing and chose not to make that gift. Imagine if everyone waited on everyone else to take action.
There are organizations out raising money using direct mail, email and phone solicitations every single month. We don't do that.
This is why when we do have a fundraising drive, such as our Spring Pledge Drive, it's vitally important for us to reach our goals. Every $11 monthly gift matters-a lot. Every $37 single gift matters-a lot.
So if you can help us today, please do so by visiting our website here. Perhaps you can help with a $25, $20 or $15 monthly gift. Perhaps you can help with a $250, $100 or $50 single gift.
If you prefer to make a contribution with a check, you can print out a reply form here to mail in with your donation.
No matter the size of your contribution, you'll receive a gift from us, a resource you can use to become better informed or to share with others so they will be better informed. For instance, those making the $11 monthly gift will receive Brigitte's latest video, "The Purge: How Our Government is Stripping All References to Radical Islam from Counterterrorism Materials," and a bonus DVD, "Jihad and the Doctrine of Abrogation."
I know most people right now are focused on concerns about the economy and jobs-and that's understandable.
But we who are a part of ACT! for America know what most Americans don't know.
We know who CAIR is, who ISNA is, who the Muslim Brotherhood is, and how they want to radically change America.
We know about jihad-both violent and stealth jihad.
We understand the threat sharia law poses to our freedoms.
And I can assure you, CAIR and its friends and allies would rejoice if ACT! for America disappeared.
Because we are the national grassroots firewall standing in the way of what radical Islam has already done to Great Britain, Europe, Australia and Canada.
In late 2010, at an event in the western U.S. where Brigitte and I spoke, an attendee made a comment to everyone present. He said:
"I've heard many people and organizations talk about the threat of radical Islam. Today I heard from an organization that is actually successfully fighting this threat."
The more of us that pull together, the bigger and stronger that firewall will be.
Will you take action today? Thank you.
Yours for a safe and free America,
Guy Rodgers
News from The Hill:
Senate Dems blast national security leak on Iran cyber-attack By Jeremy Herb
The Democratic chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday expressed worry that leaks to press about a cyber-attack on Iran authorized by the Obama administration could lead to a counter-attack on the U.S.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) joined other senior Senate Democrats in expressing serious concerns about the leak, which detailed a cyber-attack intended to harm Iran's nuclear program. Some Republicans argue the information was leaked to help President Obama's re-election campaign.
Feinstein said the fact that the U.S. is launching cyber attacks against other countries could "to some extent" provide justification for cyber-attacks against the U.S.

Mainstream Media Escapes From Wisconsin
by Joel B. Pollak
Today's New York Times is covering the Wisconsin recall election...on page 11. Not even the editorial page could be bothered--only op-ed columnists Joe Nocera and David Brooks weigh in. (Nocera laments the decline of unions; Brooks can't quite bring himself to defend Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, calling his methods "obnoxious.") A cause that fueled front-page headlines and editorial exhortations has been quietly abandoned.
As to the coverage itself, the Times focuses on the fatigue of the voters. "I hope this all stops," says the first person quoted in the article on the recall election. Halfway through, the Times reminds voters that the vote has something to do with unions and collective bargaining. It meekly offers a suggestion that Democrats could actually win, and cites "some" who "wonder" if the recall election could be close enough to force a recount.
Democrats are fond of a few positions concerning religion. They like to claim there is no way for politics and religion to mix unless it mixes in a church full of Democrat supporters. Another favorite line is that anyone who points to Democrat attacks on religion is either unqualified to do so or a wild eyed Evangelical bible thumper.
As a life long Christian I am qualified to point to the Democrats and challenge their Christianity. Democrats, get over yourself about this.
Democrats use their surrogates in the ACLU to attack religions (except Islam which they are too frightened of to go after) in general and Christianity in particular.
It was Democrats that passed Obamacare and it is Democrats that are using it to bludgeon Christians into changing our principles to suit Democrat principles. No other political Party has ever warred on religious freedom as Democrats are doing today.
The turning point in the Pacific War began JUNE 4, 1942. American intelligence intercepted Japan's plans to capture Midway Island and from there, Hawaii. The outnumbered U.S. Pacific Fleet ambushed the Japanese armada, but was losing badly. It was not until American dive bombers, navigating by guess and by God, sighted the Japanese aircraft carriers far below through a break in the clouds at the precise moment the Japanese planes had left to attack the U.S.S. Yorktown. In just five minutes, the screeching American dive bombers sank three Japanese carriers, and a fourth shortly after. After this providential event, Japan was forced to go on the defensive. On the Pacific War, President Roosevelt said, August 12, 1943: "Three weeks after the armies of the Japanese launched their attack on Philippine soil, I sent a proclamation...to the people of the Philippines... that their freedom will be redeemed... The great day of ... Continue Reading:American Minute June 4
The Department of Justice thinks it can "order" Florida to stop removing illegal non citizens from her voter registration rolls. The Sunshine State announced it will ignore the "order." Let's see Barack Obama and Eric Holder back it up.
The fight over States' rights versus the strength of an all powerful central government has been set in motion: the fuse is lit.
Since Barack Obama and his Chicago thugs forced bribed and tricked Obamacare into "law" real America has been on a collision course with him. This latest attack on our freedoms will likely only be settled by a courtroom showdown centering on whether the 10th Amendment to our Constitution has any meaning.
In case you haven't been overwhelmed with the chance to win dinner with President Obama and some New York celebrities, you'll love what Rush Limbaugh just said about the contest moments ago.
His calling the president "Barack Kardashian" is just the beginning ...
Dr. James Dobson is taking a defiant stand on Obamacare and issuing a loud and clear message to President Obama: "I WILL NOT pay the surcharge for abortion services. ... So come and get me if you must, Mr. President. I will not bow before your wicked regulation."
There's no way to predict how the 2012 elections will turn out. But it will be a turning point in American history: Either our leaders will guide the country even further along the road to "progressivism" or they will begin a long, slow turn back toward the principles of the American Founding. To help our leaders make the correct choices, The Heritage Foundation is putting a marker down with a publication called Changing America's Coursethat gives our political leaders recommendations on how to stay within the limits of the Constitution.
You've probably read Heritage's financial proposal, Saving the American Dream, and our prescription for a Conservative foreign policy. Those ideas are crucial building blocks in our approach. But they are only parts of the larger crisis facing Americans today--the crisis of Constitutional government--that Saving the American Dream deals with.
The United States is unique. Ours is a republic dedicated to the universal principles of human liberty: that all are fundamentally equal and equally endowed with unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Our government exists to secure these God-given rights, deriving its just powers from the consent of the governed. Our Constitution limits the power of government under the rule of law, creating a vigorous framework for expanding economic opportunity, protecting national independence, and securing liberty and justice for all.
Today, though, the federal government has acquired an all but unquestioned dominance over virtually every area of American life. It acts without constitutional limits and is restricted only by expediency, political will, and (less and less) budget constraints.
The unlimited scope and depth of its rules means that the federal government increasingly regulates more and more of our most basic activities, from how much water is in our toilets to what kind of light bulbs we can buy. This is a government that is unlimited by any organizing principle, increasingly undemocratic and damaging to popular self-government.
For example, as part of his reelection campaign, Obama has launched an effort called "We Can't Wait" to highlight his actions independent of Congress. This is more than the usual politics of a president running for reelection against Congress. Obama's idea seems to be that the President, charged with the execution of the laws, doesn't have to wait for the lawmaking branch to make, amend or abolish the laws but that he can and should act on his own.
This violates the spirit--and potentially the letter--of the Constitution's separation of the legislative and executive powers of Congress and the President.
For its part Congress has also failed to fulfill its Constitutional duties. Under the current Democratic party leadership, it's been more than three years since the U.S. Senate even passed a budget. And under Republican leadership in 2003, the House of Representatives unethically kept a voting window open for three hours (instead of the scheduled 15 minutes) so party leaders could twist arms, change minds and ram through Medicare Part D.
Even worse, Congress has fallen into the habit of legislating without regard to any limits on its powers. Although the Constitution vests legislative powers in Congress, the majority of "laws" are actually promulgated by agencies and bureaucracies in the guise of "regulations." Recent examples include the massive Dodd-Frank financial regulation and, of course, ObamaCare.
As a result, key policy decisions which were previously the constitutional responsibility of elected legislators are delegated to executive branch administrators whose rules have the full force and effect of laws passed by Congress. Having passed massive, broadly written pieces of legislation with little serious deliberation, Congress is increasingly an administrative body overseeing a vast array of bureaucratic policymakers and rule-making bodies.
Changing America's Course charts a Constitutional path to a brighter future of opportunity and independence. If our political leaders follow its recommendations and begin confining themselves to the limited powers the Constitution gives them, America will once again be on the principled path to liberty, opportunity and constitutional self-government.
The first step is to reduce the size and scope of government and unleash the engines of economic productivity and the institutions of cultural renewal. Only then can we change America's course, begin to get spending under control, balance the budget, and shrink our debt without increasing taxes.

Voters in Wisconsin head to the polls today in a recall election targeting Governor Scott Walker (R). The recall campaign was launched in response to Walker's collective bargaining and government reforms of one year ago.
A Wisconsin political advocacy group with ties to the Democratic Party and Big Labor is circulating pamphlets to state residents revealing their neighbors' names, addresses, and voting histories. The campaign is an apparent attempt to pressure residents in the Madison area. Read more about it on The Foundry.

In particular, Darling writes, Reid has made unprecedented use of procedures like "filling the amendment tree," in which the majority leader "us[es] his privilege of being recognized first to offer amendment after amendment to block all other amendments to a bill."
"The Founders," Darling argues, "envisioned the Senate as a slow and deliberative legislative body. Not surprisingly, the Senate developed traditions that reflect these characteristics, such as extended debate and an open amendment process."
But today, the Senate has adopted rules that limit debate on critical issues from the federal budget to gun rights to judicial nominations. Darling elaborates:
Senators have lost their right to participate in the national debate on many issues. Both Republican and Democratic leaders have used this strong-arm tactic, but Reid has used it as a normal course of business on almost every bill that comes before the Senate. This development is bad for democracy.
The Senate is known for two long-standing traditions: the right to extended debate and the right of all Members to offer amendments to bills pending on the Senate floor. Both traditions are under attack. If these two long-standing traditions are not restored in this or the next Congress, regardless of which party controls the Senate, they will likely be lost forever.
Today, voters in Wisconsin are heading to the polls to vote in a hotly contested election to recall Gov. Scott Walker and others in the state leadership.
Liberal groups were animated to begin the recall process in large part by Walker's reforms to public employee unions.
These reforms improved the health of the state's pension system and empowered workers to choose whether or not to pay union dues. The Heritage Foundation's Jason Richwine points out that there is still much to be done to reform public employee compensation.
Despite certain weaknesses, including crude enforcement mechanisms, "the objectives of these bills are sound and sorely needed," Fraser argues. Lawmakers ought "to provide more transparency, strong spending controls across the entire federal budget over the short term and the long term, and to require steps for reining in spending to meet those limits. They are important steps to fixing the budget process."

Leftist Assault on Free Speech and Conscience
This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published June 1, 2012 on The Washington Times website.
Have you heard of SWATing? Someone calls 911 falsely claiming that a person has killed someone or is about to do so. It can bring down a world of hurt, complete with sirens and a SWAT team with drawn guns. In a radio interview on the Hugh Hewitt Show, conservative Web entrepreneur Andrew Breitbart began warning people about the tactic shortly before he collapsed and died on March 1. No, I'm not suggesting his death had anything to do with this, however convenient it was for the political left.
Over the past year, strong-arm tactics have been used against prominent conservative bloggers who have written about a left-wing activist named Brett Kimberlin.
Kimberlin was convicted in a series of 1978 bombings in Speedway, Ind., the last of which critically injured a Vietnam veteran, who later committed suicide. An accomplished jailhouse lawyer, Kimberlin was released on parole in 1993, re-jailed and finally released in 2001. He went on to found the Velvet Revolution website and the Justice Through Music Project, which receives money from heavy leftist hitters, including the George Soros-controlled Tides Foundation.
As a member of the Conservative Action Project, ACRU President Susan Carleson and leaders of 26 other organizations representing a broad cross section of the conservative movement are united in opposition to bringing back earmarks!
MEMO FOR THE MOVEMENT: Don't Bring Back Earmarks!
RE: Some members of congress are trying to reopen the earmark ban through an obscure legislative process. For many conservatives, the two-year moratorium on the practice of earmarking was the signature accomplishment of the new House majority elected in 2010. Yet, the current legislative push by involving Miscellaneous Tariff Bills (MTBs) is being used by the Washington establishment to reopen that moratorium and roll back conservative advances.
ACTION: With the Federal government saddled with trillions of dollars in deficits and $16 trillion in debt, bringing back earmarks would only compound Washington's spending problem. We urge all organizations and individuals concerned about the size of the federal government to issue op-eds, alerts, blog posts, releases, and other communications warning about the implications of ending or modifying the earmark ban. Earmarks should be permanently eliminated, not resurrected. Time is short, therefore please do not delay.
Sorry Global Warming Alarmists, the Earth Is Cooling
This column by ACRU General Counsel and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy (CCPP) Peter Ferrara was published May 31, 2012 on Forbes.com.
Climate change itself is already in the process of definitively rebutting climate alarmists who think human use of fossil fuels is causing ultimately catastrophic global warming. That is because natural climate cycles have already turned from warming to cooling, global temperatures have already been declining for more than 10 years, and global temperatures will continue to decline for another two decades or more.
That is one of the most interesting conclusions to come out of the seventh International Climate Change Conference sponsored by the Heartland Institute, held last week in Chicago. I attended, and served as one of the speakers, talking about The Economic Implications of High Cost Energy.
The conference featured serious natural science, contrary to the self-interested political science you hear from government financed global warming alarmists seeking to justify widely expanded regulatory and taxation powers for government bodies, or government body wannabees, such as the United Nations. See for yourself, as the conference speeches are online.
Florida Family Association airplane banners warn even more families about Gay Day at Disney.
While parking lots of other theme parks were overflowing the Magic Kingdom had several parking lots that were completely empty.
Florida Family Association paid Aerial Messages $12,300 to fly banners warning potential Magic Kingdom guests about Gay Day at Disney scheduled for Saturday, June 2, 2012. Two planes pulled banners which stated "Warning: Gay Day at Disney 6/2" for 18.5 total hours on Friday, June 1, 2012. One plane pulled a banner which stated "Warning: Gay Day at Disney 2day" for ten hours on Saturday, June 2, 2012. A second plane flew two hours on Saturday to make up for stormy weather on Friday.
The results of the airplane banner project are reported as follows:
Overall attendance appeared to be DOWN another 5%more than last year's 50% drop in attendance. The Magic Kingdom parking lots had approximately 1,210 fewer cars (11 double rows) compared to last year at the same time of day. There were less than fifty people on average in line to buy tickets throughout the morning and early afternoon. See photos below.
Gay Day patron attendance was DOWN close to 60% from last year. Their visual presence declined significantly with FAR FEWER red shirts promoting Gay Day. The most likely reason for this steep decline is because Gay Day patrons felt unwelcome after seeing the airplane banners last year. Gay Day patrons knew more banners would be at the Magic Kingdom again this year. This would explain why pro-Gay Day groups hired two planes to pull banners with counter messages. See photo posted below.
Foreign traveler attendance especially from South America was up significantly and almost made up for the entire loss of Gay Day patrons. Bloomberg reported that Disney is benefitting from a boost in South American tourists with Brazilian tourism alone up by 33%
Pilots reported that the parking lots of all of the other parks were FULL whereas the Magic Kingdom had several parking lots that were completely empty.
Heavy rain during mid-Friday prevented the planes from flying during a couple of preferred hours, cancelled the in air 1:00 PM press conference and likely caused some people to patronize the Magic Kingdom on Saturday instead of Friday. Knowing the rain was on the way planes launched almost two hours early and flew until dark to cover as much daylight as possible.
Gay Day at Disney still offended many regular families who left early.
Numerous cars left the parking lot after families were in the park for just a couple of hours. On average, eighteen (18) cars per row of one hundred ten (110) left the Magic Kingdom early after being in the park for less than three (3) hours.
Several families stood in line at the front gate to complain about the event. The body language of many other families demonstrated their disappointment as they left the park. One family, with mom, dad and three children, walked toward a tram to leave the park around 12:30. They avoided getting on the first available tram car which was all but empty except for one gay couple. The family briskly walked up to the tram car with a dozen families and climbed on the vehicle.
"We are very pleased with the measured result of this effort to warn families about Gay Day at Disney. Clearly we made a strong impact again this year with tens of thousands of fewer children and thousands fewer of Gay Day patrons in the park. A SPECIAL THANKS to everyone who gave almost $12,900 to pay for this project. The $600 collected above the $12,300 aircraft contract amount helped pay for the teams two night stay in Orlando." David Caton, Florida Family Association Executive Director. Click here to see Aerial Messages invoice.
Opponents to our banners flew this banner for two hours on Friday.

The U.S. has confirmed that it killed Abu Yahya al-Libi who, according to various accounts, was effectively al Qaeda's duputy leader. Al-Libi was taken out by a drone strike.
With the exception of bin Laden, I tend to view al Qaeda leaders as fairly easy to replace, but there is evidence that this is not the case here. According to this report from CNN's Security Clearance, al-Libi "is universally admired in jihadist circles and among the younger generation of al Qaeda leaders." He is considered "charismatic, intelligent, a religious scholar - and with the extra qualification of having escaped from U.S. custody in Afghanistan." Thus, his loss is viewed as "a cataclysmic blow" to al Qaeda. The final statement seems a bit over-the-top, but you get the idea.
The main reason why al-Libi's death is considered so consequential stems from his status as a religious leader. No one else within the group is said to rival his legitimacy as a religious scholar, and thus no one else can as credibly provide Islamic justifications for al Qaeda's global campaign of terrorism.
The religious basis for that campaign has become an increasingly hard sell, particularly after the Arab spring pointed to non-terroristic (though hardly non-violent) paths to power. I doubt that al-Libi could have effectively made the case for sustained, largely unbridled terrorism over time. But we can still be happy that he won't be around to try.
Al-Libi was Libyan, and very influential among al Qaeda forces there. Late last year, he told them, "At this crossroads you have found yourselves, you either choose a secular regime that pleases the greedy crocodiles of the West and for them to use it as a means to fulfill their goals, or you take a strong position and establish the religion of Allah." It will be interesting to see what impact, if any, his demise has on al Qaeda's efforts in Libya.
Al-Libi himself had a message for America in the event it succeeded in killing him:
I say to America: Don't have hopes that you are about to defeat al Qaeda. Let al Qaeda be defeated and all their leaders and individuals be killed, and then what? The battle with America today is not with an organization or a group or a sect, but it is a battle with the Ummah of Islam [i.e., the global Islamic community.
Maybe. But this leaves open the question of how the battle will be fought. The hope is that, as al Qaeda is defeated, such a battle will be waged in more conventional, less ghastly ways.
To the extent that I'm still a serious baseball fan, I am of the tiresome "seen it all before" variety. The fact is that I have seen about half of "it" - i.e., the history of baseball in the modern era. And I have read extensively about the other half.
Thus, when the Washington Nationals called up teen-age phenom Bryce Harper I was prepared to be a skeptic and a critic. That inclination began to vanish when he stole home plate after an opposing pitcher intentionally plunked him. Over the next weeks, the kid has gradually transformed me into a Harper cheerleader.
His batting statistics alone might have justified the transformation. Through 32 games (basically the equivalent of one-fifth of a season of everyday play), Harper is batting .288 with 5 home runs, 12 RBI, and 17 walks. His on-base percentage is .380 and he's slugging .542, for an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of .922. A little while ago, I read that only Hall of Famer Mel Ott could boast of comparable statistics as a teen-ager. By now, Harper may be running ahead of Young Master Ott (as his first manager John McGraw called him).
But it's more than just stats with Harper. He falls behind 0-2 in the count and then draws walks. He works the pitcher for 10 pitches and then draws walks. He has the maturity at the plate of a savvy 12-year veteran.
And it's more than just hitting. Harper has been converted on-the-fly to center-field. During his brief time in the minors, he played mostly right-field. If I'm not mistaken, just two years ago he was a catcher. Catcher and center-field are polar opposite positions, so hardly anyone who begins at one of them ends up at the other.
To be sure, the great Dale Murphy did. But Murphy moved to center-field at age 24 after spending parts of six seasons in the National League and establishing himself as a big-league hitter. To be learning to hit big-league pitching and learning a challenging new defensive position at the same time, and at the age of 19, must be unprecedented.
When the season is over, the "advanced fielding statistics" will tell us how well Harper is doing in center field. But he certainly passes the eye-ball test out there - he looks like he belongs.
Finally, there is Harper's base-running, the most controversial part of his game. It was on the base paths that he first caught our attention, and in a positive way. Lately, though, as opponents have learned that he will always try to take the extra base, Harper has been thrown out several times.
But the two recent instances of this were not really bad plays. He was thrown out on close calls at second base with two out, and third base with one out. These are not baseball no-nos. Getting to second base with two out is very valuable, since your team is likely only to get one more hit in the inning, at most, and from second you can score on that hit. Getting to third base with one out is very valuable because, unlike with two gone, you can score from third on an out.
Tom Boswell of the Post, an early Harper booster, has criticized the kid's base-running. He noted that when Harper was thrown out at third, the heart of the order was due up. But the heart of the order consisted of Ryan Zimmerman, who isn't hitting, Adam La Roche, who could have been pitched around, and Michael Morse, who had missed the entire season and doesn't appear to be in form yet. Collectively, these three went 0-12 during the game in question. So it wasn't a bad percentage move for Harper to try to put himself in position to score on an out.
Boswell is right about the larger point, though. Harper will need to dial it back a little on the bases. He seems to have figured everything else out, so think he'll get this too.
Meanwhile, I've made the transformation from too jaded to too gushing. In a previous post, I compared Harper (for a limited purpose) to Jackie Robinson. In this one, I've compared him to Ott. He's also been compared in his enthusiasm for the game to a young Willie Mays. The "Say Hey Kid," played stick ball in the streets of Manhattan; Harper has participated in soft-ball on the D.C. Mall.
In some ways, the player Harper reminds me most of is Pete Rose. Harper has much more power than Rose possessed and will draw more walks than Rose did during most of his career. On the other hand, Harper likely won't hit for Rose's batting average, or re-write the record book in various categories. But both have the same kind of in-your-face intensity. So, though their games differ, I enjoy them both the same way.
Sparky Anderson once said, when Thurman Munson was being compared to Johnny Bench, "let's not embarrass anyone." So I'll stop embarrassing myself with comparisons and say, with the understatement of an English soccer fan, "the boy's a bit special."
No, that doesn't mean she is appearing here on PL-although, come to think of it, we could try to line up a guest appearance at Power Line Live where she would chat with our readers; I will see what I can do-only that, in response to requests from Steve and others, I'm going to comment on the Miss USA pageant, which concluded Sunday night.
The pageant was won, of course, by Rhode Island's Olivia Culpo. In my opinion, she is a very impressive contestant and will be a strong contender at the Miss Universe competition in December. On the off chance you haven't seen Miss Culpo, here she is:
Olivia Culpo, like most pageant winners, is very smart. She is also an excellent cellist. That, of course, won't do her a lot of good at the Miss Universe pageant, which lacks a talent competition. Still, I think she has a shot to be the first American Miss Universe in quite a few years.
The closest thing to a controversy in the Miss USA competition was Miss Culpo's endorsement of the Miss Universe organization's decision to allow transgendered women to compete. Of course, "controversy" is a bit of a misnomer: as we all know, conservative opinions are controversial, liberal opinions-which this was assumed to be-are not. But let's not jump to conclusions. This was the exchange:
Celebrity Judge Rob Kardashian [seriously]: Would you feel it would be fair that a transgender woman wins the Miss USA title over a natural-born woman?
Olivia Culpo: I do think that that would be fair, but I can understand that people would be a little apprehensive to take that road because there is a tradition of natural-born women, but today where there are so many surgeries and so many people out there who have a need to change for a happier life, I do accept that because I believe it's a free country.
Note four things: First, Culpo was endorsing a decision that had already been made by Miss Universe, hardly a radical act. Second, I don't think there is anything wrong with the policy. Beauty pageants are not going to be overrun with transgendered contestants, let alone winners. Third, Culpo was taking a subtle dig at the fact that the major pageants, including Miss Universe, have no ban on surgical enhancement. There are already "so many surgeries" among pageant contestants, what is one more? Fourth-and this is the important one-note her rationale: "I believe it's a free country." Would a liberal ever say that? No! I am convinced that Miss Culpo is a closet conservative, and will root for her enthusiastically in December.
From a collection of recently discovered pics of Obama posing in college. I don't think this requires much additional commentary, except to ask the obvious question: what's he smoking? If it's what I think it is, I think he's still smoking it.
For some time now, Democrats have been talking up their chances of carrying Arizona this Fall in the presidential election. Republicans are at risk, supposedly, because Hispanics dislike their "extreme" position on illegal immigration.
It's not clear whether the Democrats ever really believed that President Obama has a decent shot at carrying Arizona, and it's unlikely that they believe it now. For one thing, last month a PPP poll had Obama trailing Romney in the State by 50-43. Obama's approval rating was just 41 percent.
For another thing, Ron Barber, who is running to succeed Gabrielle Giffords in Congress, will not even mention Obama's name, according to Politico. During a debate, Barber, who is Giffords' district director, wouldn't even say he would vote for Obama, though he later admitted he would.
Barber shuns Obama even though the president and the first lady visited him in the hospital after Barber was injured during the shooting rampage in Tucson. The fact that a Democratic candidate in a swing district with a Democratic congressional incumbent seeks this conspicuously to airbrush the president out of the political landscape speaks volumes about Obama's weakness in Arizona.
Barber is also attempting to airbrush Obamacare out of the campaign. He gutlessly refuses to say whether he would have voted for its passage. If the voters let him get away with this evasion, they will deserve to be represented by the weasel.
Giffords was a reliably liberal vote in Congress. Her ACU rating was 14 percent. If Barber is elected, expect more of the same.
Barber's opponent is Jesse Kelly, a businessman and former Marine who served in Iraq. Kelly lost to Giffords by 4,000 votes in 2010.
The special election will take place a week from today, on June 12. If Kelly wins, he will have to run again in November. You can contribute to his campaign here.
Syria's Insurrection Is Not America's War By Patrick J. Buchanan The question for our bellicose interventionists is this: How much treasure should be expended, how much American blood shed so the Muslim Brotherhood can depose the Assad dynasty, take power and establish an Islamist state in Syria?
Immoral Beyond Redemption By Walter E. Williams Our current economic crisis, as well as that of Europe, is a direct result of immoral conduct. Roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of our federal budget can be described as Congress' taking the property of one American and giving it to another.
Labor unions have a lot riding on the outcome of the Scott Walker recall election. Regardless of the outcome, labor's agenda has been slowed or defeated outright.
If Governor Walker wins his fight, it bodes ill for the Democrats - Wisconsin for the first time in many years will be in play come November and not necessarily a sure state for the Democrats. That is why on Tuesday night all eyes will be on the Wisconsin results.

The conference will cover the full range of issues regarding the global governance movement's assault on national sovereignty.
In an interview from the campaign trail over the weekend, Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch addressed some of the implications of whatever happens on Tuesday. If Big Labor prevails in the gubernatorial fight, recall might well become the featured weapon in its arsenal.
This is it, folks. The big day everyone has been waiting for. Election Day!
No, I'm not confused. I'm referring to the recall election in Wisconsin, where Governor Scott Walker is fighting off a challenge from Big Labor, the Democrat Party and their radical left-wing allies. The stakes are huge, and the outcome is anyone's guess.
Yesterday the Wall Street Journal summarized the race this way:
"A single election rarely determines a democracy's fate, but some matter more than others. Tuesday's recall election of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is one that matters a great deal because it will test whether taxpayers have any hope of controlling the entitlement state and its dominant special interests. Specifically, we will learn if a politician can dare to cross government unions and survive. ...
"Students of democracy from Alexis de Tocqueville to Mancur Olson have pointed out that the greatest threat to self-government comes from the tendency of democracies to become barnacled with special interests that vote themselves more benefits than society can afford. This is the crisis of the modern entitlement state, which is unfolding from California to Illinois, Greece, Italy and even Washington. Wisconsin is a critical test of whether democracies can reform before the crisis becomes debilitating."
The Journal is right, my friends.
Left Fighting For Its Life
Here's an indication of just how seriously Obama and his left-wing allies are taking this recall election: The Obama Justice Department announced yesterday that it was sending agents to "monitor polling place activities" in Milwaukee.
Does anyone really believe these personnel are there to make sure that no cheating takes place? This is, after all, the same Justice Department that dismissed the charges against New Black Panthers who in 2008 showed up at Philadelphia polling locations armed with clubs. It is far more likely that the presence of Obama's officials will intimidate local poll watchers, enabling the unions to cheat!
And there's more. Wisconsin Democrats have deployed more than 440 lawyers throughout the state for "election protection activities but also tasked with recount preparation." That's right, folks, the Democrats are prepared to go nuclear if this election is close.
Big Labor has spent tens of millions of dollars to make an example out of Scott Walker. It can't afford to lose now. The left will do everything it can to "steal" enough votes to change the outcome if it is remotely possible.
That's why it is imperative that every conservative in Wisconsin votes today and every conservative in this great country votes in November!
Out-Of-Touch
Four years ago, Barack Obama ran as the candidate of the common man, promising to transcend partisanship, transform Washington and bring hope and change to America. The liberal media swooned for Obama and willingly fell under the spell of his rhetoric. But there were moments when he revealed his elitism. Remember when Obama told San Francisco liberals that rural Americans cling bitterly to their guns and faith?
The front page of today's Washington Post warns that Obama's "common man" image is once again at risk as he aggressively courts Hollywood's liberal elites to help him raise money. For example, a small donation to Obama's reelection campaign buys you the chance to have dinner with Vogue editor Anna Wintour. You can be unemployed and stylish too!
Polling data starkly demonstrates just how out-of-touch Obama is with the commonsense values of most Americans. But, as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. So we've put together a new web ad highlighting Obama's vacations, excessive fundraising and golf outings.
Watch it on our web site at cwfpac.com. And please be certain to share it with friends and family members. Post it to your Facebook and Twitter accounts.
CBO Warns Against Obama's Spending & Debt
The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office warned today that America's debt to GDP ratio will double, with debt approaching 200% of GDP, in 15 to 20 years without major reforms. The CBO report also included this indictment of Obama's out-of-control spending:
"In the past few years, the federal government has been recording the largest budget deficits since 1945, both in dollar terms and as a share of the economy. Consequently, the amount of federal debt held by the public has surged."
As CBS News reported in March, Obama has added more to the federal debt in three years than George W. Bush added in eight. Clearly, Obamanomics is not working, and it's time for a change!
Accept Homosexual Demands -- Or Else!
For six years the Christian owners of a small photography business have fought the state of New Mexico for violating their religious liberty. At issue in this case was whether the owners would be forced to photograph a homosexual "marriage." When the couple refused, New Mexico's Civil Rights Commission accused them of discrimination and slapped them with a $7,000 fine. So the couple sued.
Last week, an appeals court upheld the Civil Rights Commission's fine ruling that religious freedom could not be the basis for discriminating against "protected classes," including homosexuals. According to one report, attorneys for the Christian couple asked the court to consider the example of a black photographer being asked to photograph a KKK rally. The judge was unmoved. In New Mexico, the private bedroom behaviors of homosexuals trump religious freedom.
My friends, I know the economy is front and center in this election, but the culture war is very real. This election will have tremendous consequences for the values we will pass on to our children and grandchildren. I cannot stress enough just how important it is for every conservative to vote this November.

Watch the stunning admission HERE.

George Soros: The Godfather of the left When Glenn was at Fox he had hoped that if he broke big, important stories, like when he exposed George Soros, others would be there to pick up the ball and run with it - but it never happened. Well, two more have decided to join the fight in shinning a light on how he is using his billions to manipulate currencies, elections, and young minds.
Typical: Big Government trying to cut off one of the few energy life lines left Barack Obama has talked in the past about bankrupting coal companies and making sure energy prices skyrocket. As if we needed more evidence he's trying to collapse the economy, look no further than energy. While he throws money into the trash (Solyndra) chasing green energy - he completely ignores another promising energy source. What is it? Find out HERE.
Van Jones new Progressive Economic Plan? It's fairly well known that Van Jones was a self admitted communist in his 'youth' and he's never really denounced that background.
