(Not) Shocking: Obama picks socialist as Medal of Freedom honoree
Dolores Huerta is not shy about her socialist beliefs. She's heaped public praise on the work Hugo Chavez is doing by socializing Venezuela and wonders why America isn't following the same path (wait...we aren't?) Huerta has said that "Republicans hate Latinos" and has no problem with illegal immigration. So, of course, she's a great pick for the Presidential Medal of Freedom ...if your President happens to be a socialist.
That's right, Dolores Huerta can now add one more bullet to her resume. Thanks to President Obama she has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Read more and see video here:

- Co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America
- Honorary chair of the Democratic Socialists of America
- Supports expanded rights for illegal immigrants
Dolores C. Huerta was born April 10, 1930 in Dawson, New Mexico, where her father was a miner, field worker, union activist, and state assemblyman; her mother, Alicia Chavez, was a successful businesswoman who owned a restaurant and a large hotel. Huerta's parents divorced when she was three years old, and the girl was raised thereafter (along with her two brothers and two sisters) by her mother, in Stockton, California.
Although a number of Huerta's online biographies indicate that she graduated from Delta Community College, the San Francisco Chronicle has revealed that she actually "fell a few units short of her degree." She never subsequently returned to campus except to collect honorary degrees, conduct radical activism workshops, and give commencement speeches.
As a young adult, Huerta taught school (without an education degree) until 1955, when, as a single mother of seven children (she would eventually have four more), she launched her career as a political activist dedicated to radicalizing migrant farmworkers, many of whom were illegal aliens. Huerta has since acknowledged that when she was a young woman, her busy activist career caused her to be an absentee mother who ignored her parental responsibilities.

Polish Officials Demand Obama Apology for 'Polish Death Camps' Remark
By: JTA May 30, 2012
Polish officials called on President Obama to apologize for using the term "Polish death camps." Obama awarded a posthumous presidential Medal of Freedom on Tuesday to Jan Karski, a Polish resistance fighter who was among the first to report German atrocities in his country. "Fluent in four languages, possessed of a photographic memory, Jan served as a courier for the Polish resistance during the darkest days of World War II," Obama said. "Before one trip across enemy lines, resistance fighters told him that Jews were being murdered on a massive scale, and smuggled him into the Warsaw Ghetto and a Polish death camp to see for himself. Jan took that information to President Franklin Roosevelt, giving one of the first accounts of the Holocaust and imploring to the world to take action." Poles insist on the term "Nazi death camps" to describe facilities such as Auschwitz and Sobibor. In a tweet reported by BuzzFeed, Radek Sikorski, the Polish foreign minister, said that Obama "will apologize for this outrageous error," ascribing it to "ignorance and incompetence." Read more: |

June 5th meeting, General Wayne Tea Party - A special guest speaker!
We look forwardto having Nancy Becker as the "Main event" at our June 5th meeting at JC's Fireside Bistro.
Nancy has thrived in the private sector as well as in government, and has held Republican leadership posts at many levels. She's also a wife, a mother of two, grandmother of five, and great grandmother of one.
Currently working in government for Montgomery County, she manages a staff of twenty-six.
She will take a lot of the mystery out of politics for us, and explain why it's so critical that we become involved with what's happening in our own back yard. And how to go about it!
After she spoke a year ago with our sister Tea Party in Central Montgomery County, which is led by Jim and Pam Devlin, the reaction of their members about Nancy Becker's presentation was "Absolute dynamite".
Please mark your calendar for June 5th, 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., JC's Fireside Bistro, Valley Forge Shopping Center, King of Prussia.

P.S. Nancy Becker's bio and accomplishments appear below. She's obviously one of those people to whom the term "Extremely high energy level" is correctly applied.
Nancy Becker
Elected as the Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds in 2003, Nancy Becker is an accomplished, professional administrator and manager with over 35 years experience in real estate, financial management, and strategic planning.
Currently she directs the Recorder of Deeds Office, full time, with a staff of twenty-six (26), who maintain the integrity of all land records and other documents entrusted to the department, as well as the collection and monthly distribution of County/State fees and Real Estate Transfer Taxes for the State, Townships, Boroughs, Municipalities and School Districts; while professionally serving the public with efficiency, accountability, and responsibility.
Over these past 8 years, as the Recorder of Deeds, Nancy has implemented new revenue sources, saved taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars ($750,000.00 alone in 2006), managed and cut costs; increased efficiency, timely recording and high accuracy rates; prioritized advanced, user-friendly systems, constituent services, security, and disaster recovery; and initiated procedures to protect residents from real estate fraud.
She initiated, coordinated, and spear-headed public effort for sponsorship and support of Senate Bill 1331, which prohibits the state from imposing and collecting state sales and Use Taxes for certain public services performed by any county governmental agency and/or court, and House Bill 1634 (Act 110), which eliminates the need to pre-register a deed prior to recording, thereby saving the residents of Montgomery County tens of thousands of dollars.
November 2011 she initiated a class action suit against MERS and the large banks that have not recorded mortgage assignments. She was featured in Bloomberg Businessweek November 2011 and Westlaw Journal December 2011 for her efforts to maintain the chain of title on mortgages and her attempt to collect in excess of $15 million dollars in recording fees for Montgomery County.
Under her direction, the Recorder of Deeds office has become a model of document management:
- One of the highest tech land records offices in the country.
- One of the first in the state to electronically record land documents (eRecord) accelerating document recording, creating efficiencies, reducing errors, and dramatically improving the county's ability to serve its constituents. "eRecording" is a government priority at both the Federal and State levels. It is just one of the priorities that I am initiating to comply with the Montgomery County Commissioners' eGoverment initiative.
- One of the first in the state to apply artificial intelligence software, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) to automatically capture document data.
- One of the first counties in state to participate in its eNotary initiative.
- Digitizing land plans in order to make them available through direct computer entry allowing faster access to information.
- Digitized land records dating back from 1784.
- Implemented Disaster Tolerant/Recovery plan by total "redundant replication" of data and images.
- Offer office information and forms online and in the process of integrating a digital archiving system.
- Founded the first Property Records Educational Partners (PREP) organization in Pennsylvania, to maintain technological advancement, education, and user-friendly constituent service.
Nancy believes that responsibility of citizenship means being involved in the community. She has been a member of numerous community boards and commissions.
To mention some, she is the President of the PA Recorder of Deeds Association, President of the Northern Montgomery County Drug & Alcohol Task Force, Southeast Regional Chairperson of the Property Records Educational Partners; member of the Board of Directors of the Property Reorders Industry Association, Co-Chair of the Law Enforcement Collaborative, working with the FBI Mortgage and Land Fraud Task Force, a member of the Montgomery County Drug & Alcohol Planning Committee, the Northern Montco Technical Career Center Educational Opportunities Council, the North Penn School District Drug Free & Safe Schools Committee, the Towamencin Township Park and Recreation Advisory Council and Planning Commission, the American Society of Professional & Executive Women and the International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Elected Officials & Clerks.
Nancy has also played a significant part in raising millions of dollars in grants and contributions for public causes.
She has also been deeply involved in the political process and the Montgomery County Republican Party:
- Montgomery County Republican Women's Leadership (1994- Present)
Treasurer (2009 - Present)
- Montgomery County Republican Committee Chairman's Club
- Montgomery County Republican Committee Area 9 Vice Chairperson (1994-1998)
- Montgomery County Republican Committee New Majority Council
- Montgomery County Council of Republican Women (1991 to Present)
President (2000-2002)
1st Vice President (1996-1998)
2nd Vice President (1994-1996)
Board of Directors (1994- Present)
- Montgomery County Court House Hill Council of Republican Women
First Vice President
- Pennsylvania Council of Republican Women (Director)
- Republican State Committee (1996 to Present)
- Republican Committee Woman, Towamencin Township 1-2 (1988 to Present)
Treasurer (1992-Present)
- Republican Poll Worker (1971-Present)
- Served on more than thirty (30) Republican campaign committees for Federal, State, County, and local candidates during thirty-two (32) years of Republican service
Nancy and her husband Mike have lived in Towamencin, Montgomery County for over 34 years.

Sen. Marco Rubio Live
Dom Giordano welcomes
Senator Marco Rubio (R - FL)
Wednesday, June 20, 2012 7-8:30 PM Location: National Constitution Center, 525 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106
"Conservatism is not about leaving people behind. Conservatism is about allowing people to catch up." (Marco Rubio)
There are very few politicians that have risen to national prominence as quickly as Marco Rubio. At age forty-one there is huge interest in and speculation about his political future. Will he be tapped by Mitt Romney to be his running mate? Will he run for President in 2016?
His story is detailed in his new book 'An American Son." Rubio is the son of parents who fled Cuba in the 1950's. Using the work ethic and tenacity instilled in him by his parents and grandfather, Rubio earned a law degree. As a young attorney he ran for the West Miami City Commission, a role that led to the Florida House of Representatives. In just six years he rose to Speaker of the House and became a leading advocate for free enterprise, better schools, limited government, and a fairer, simpler tax system. He found that he could connect with people across party lines while still upholding conservative values.
His U.S. Senate campaign started as an extreme long shot againstFlorida's popular incumbent governor, Charlie Crist. Rubio traveled the state with his message of empowerment and optimism. He upset Crist in both the primary and a dramatic three-way general election, after Crist quit the GOP to run as an independent.
Now Rubio speaks on the national stage about the challenges we face and the better future that's possible if we return to our founding principles. As he puts it , "Conservatism is not about leaving people behind. Conservatism is about allowing people to catch up."
In that vision, as in his family's story, Rubio proves that the American Dream is still alive for those who pursue it.
Tickets are $25.00 and include a hard cover copy of his brand new book 'An American Son."

By allowing our attention to be focused exclusively on the danger and prevention of terrorism, we ignore the many other ways we are being attacked. Specifically, we are missing what our Islamist enemies call their 'civilization jihad' - a form of warfare that employs manipulative financial techniques, lawfare, infiltration of our civil institutions and government and insidious information dominance. Together, these have the effect of exploiting our liberties and governing structures against us, so that our leaders wind up imposing the very anti-American values that our enemies promote.
Welcome to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within - a 10-part, web-based video briefing that is designed to explain why and how this is happening.
It addresses a threat most Americans are unaware even exists within our country, let alone the degree of peril it represents. The threat is the totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine its adherents call "shariah" and the organized, disciplined and increasingly successful efforts by such adherents-- most especially the Muslim Brotherhood-- to bring it here.
We are making this course available in the hope of encouraging, informing and broadening support for national efforts to defeat the insinuation into this country of shariah's anti-constitutional and seditious program.

A Special Message from Americans United for Freedom Contributor KrisAnne Hall

THE PLAN TO BAN TEA PARTY RALLIES
SIT DOWN & SHUT UP OR ELSE
By KrisAnne Hall www.AmericansUnitedforFreedom.com March 6, 2012
Heading into the most important election of our lifetime, Barack Obama and a terrified Congress want to make sure angry Americans can never again gather en mass to change the course of history as we did with the 1.2 million member 912 March and the demonstrations that flipped Congress in 2010. No, our tyrannical politicians want to force you to stay home and shut up.
THE FIRST AMENDMENT SHALL NOT DIE ON OUR WATCH! - REPEAL HR347 & 1794 - FAX CONGRESS NOW!
The protected right of the people peaceably to assemble is unalienable, something that has afforded deep fundamental and historical foundations to our freedom. Our Founders established a clear "no trespassing sign" via our First Amendment to keep the government away from this God-given right essential to Liberty. "Congress shall make no law abridging...the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." But new legislation has been passed in Congress that will destroy this absolutely central, simple and non-negotiable right imperative to a free people.
HR 347 and S 1794, the "Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011" has nothing to do with improving landscaping around federal buildings. This bill is being presented as a No Trespassing bill. Reasonable people understand that lawful restrictions and protections are needed for government officials and government functions. However, this legislation makes it a federal crime to allegedly DISRUPT the "ORDERLY CONDUCT" of government.
THE FIRST AMENDMENT SHALL NOT DIE ON OUR WATCH! - REPEAL HR347 & 1794 - FAX CONGRESS NOW!
The violator doesn't have to be physically on the grounds where the government business is being conducted, just within the vicinity of the self-proclaimed "business of government." The law is not limited to buildings or locations as the title suggests, but seems to be "roving" and follows persons protected by Secret Service wherever they may go.
- Standing on a sidewalk with a sign as a Congressman walks by? BUSTED
- Traffic slowing to read your Tea Party signs? BUSTED
- Make a statement at a town hall meeting that your Congressman doesn't like? BUSTED
1752(a)(2) knowingly, and with intent to impede or disrupt the orderly conduct of government business or official functions, engages in disorderly or disruptive conduct in, or within such proximity to, any restricted building or grounds when, or so that, such conduct, in fact, impedes or disrupts the orderly conduct of Government business or official functions;
1752(a)(3) knowingly, and with the intent to impede or disrupt the orderly conduct of Government business or official functions, obstructs or impedes ingress or egress to or from any restricted building or grounds;
1752(c)(1) the term 'restricted buildings or grounds' means any posted, cordoned off, or otherwise restricted area - (B) of a building or grounds where the President or other person protected by the Secret Service is or will be temporarily visiting; or C) of a building or grounds so restricted in conjunction with an event designated as a special event of national significance;
THE FIRST AMENDMENT SHALL NOT DIE ON OUR WATCH! REPEAL HR347 & 1794 - FAX CONGRESS NOW!
The right protected in the First Amendment is the right to peaceably assemble. We do not have the right to impede the flow of traffic, either on sidewalks or roadways. We do not have the right to impede anyone's business practices. But this law is not about private business, it is about government operations. Make that Big Brother Government Operations.
This Congress has a habit of writing in vague and overbroad terms; yet, in order for laws to be Constitutionally sound they CANNOT be vague and overbroad in ANY aspect, and they can ONLY interfere with the rights of the people in as narrow a capacity as both necessary and according with Constitutional principle. But this law makes it a crime to disrupt the government. The Supreme Court has said this type of broad language gives too much power to the government, and they have been saying this since 1939. This law actually places the desire of the government to be free from disruption unconstitutional power over the right of the people to redress the government of their grievances.
THE FIRST AMENDMENT SHALL NOT DIE ON OUR WATCH! REPEAL HR347 & 1794 - FAX CONGRESS NOW!
Suppose your Congressman, who is under Secret Service protection, has a town hall meeting and many members of the community show up to challenge him on his voting record. This law could be construed to allow federal charges to be brought against these citizens for disrupting his town hall meeting by attending and demanding to be heard under the First Amendment. After all, it will not be hard to claim that people who are not happy with the Congressman's voting record had the "intent" to disrupt this meeting. This vague and overbroad language has the potential to ultimately prevent people from gathering outside any government building or politician's function for fear of being charged with a federal offense. In Constitutional law, we call that a "chilling effect" and the Supreme Court has always held these restrictions to be unconstitutional. After all, who can afford to risk going to jail, to carry a record of federal arrest, to stand for their rights - even if they will win?
The right to orderly conduct of government is NOT a constitutionally protected right. However we DO have the right to free speech and the right to peaceably assemble. Our Constitution enshrines in government the fundamental principle of protection for our God-given, unalienable rights freely to speak and assemble. These rights of We the People are held as foundation stones of our individual Liberty and the government must protect these rights, not limit them. And throughout history, our Supreme Court has protected these rights.
- Hague v. CID, 307 U.S. 496 (1939)
- Boos v. Barry, 485 U.S. 312, 318 (1988)
- United States v. Grace, 461 U.S. 171, 177 (1983)
- Educ. Ass'n v. Perry Local Educators' Ass'n, 460 U.S. 37, (1983)
In every single case, the Court ruled that the people's First Amendment right to protest fundamentally outweighs the government's right to avoid uncomfortable situations at which politicians may be called to account for their actions.
THE FIRST AMENDMENT SHALL NOT DIE ON OUR WATCH! REPEAL HR347 & 1794 - FAX CONGRESS NOW!
People have the right to complain, the right to have their voices be heard, the right to redress their grievances in the form of protests. These actions are supposed to make the government take notice. Disruption cannot be the standard to stop speech. To allow the government to create this new standard allows the government to tell us to sit down and shut up.
The chilling effect occurs not in the fact that you are denied your due process. If you are arrested because of unlawful legislation you can fight the prosecution and even sue the government for violating your rights. If the Supreme Court has not become completely corrupted you have fairly good odds of winning. But, as anyone who has been wronged by a government agency can tell you, a victory will often come at the expense of a ruined life and livelihood.
The bottom line is that there are laws in every municipality that punish Trespass, Disorderly Conduct, Assault, and any other crime involving real threats against government and persons in government. Why do we need a vague and overbroad FEDERAL LAW to enforce laws that are already in effect, when that law could encroach on our God-given, protected rights? William Penn said, "Necessity, it is said, is the plea for every infringement of human Liberty; it is the argument of tyrants and the creed of slaves." Clearly, we don't need a "Federal Trespass Bill." We already have one; it's called the Bill of Rights!
When will we have enough of government intrusion on our Constitutionally protected rights? We were outraged because we are Taxed Enough Already. When will we recognize that if we cannot trust the government with our finances, then we certainly cannot trust the government with our Liberty?
THE FIRST AMENDMENT SHALL NOT DIE ON OUR WATCH! REPEAL HR347 & 1794 - FAX CONGRESS NOW!

The U.S. Constitution
A Reader
Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.

About Hillsdale College
Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."
Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs. Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012. |

From July 16 through July 18, 2012, Christians United for Israel will be holding its 7th Annual Washington Summit. We're going back to stand with Israel in our nation's capital. This year - more than ever - we need you to join us!
In the coming months, critical decisions are going to be made about Iran, Israel and the world. Finally, Washington is beginning to focus on the issue of a nuclear Iran. Many of our leaders want to confront this looming threat. But others want to keep kicking the can down the road. The debate is far from over.
- We know that when thousands of CUFI activists arrive in DC and on Capitol Hill, we can change the conversation.
- We can remind our leaders that a nuclear Iran is not only a threat to Israel, but to the US as well. And we can demonstrate to our elected officials that their constituents care enough about this issue to show up at their DC offices.
- We know that we can create a sense of immediacy that's otherwise lacking.
- We know that the more of us who show up and speak out -- the louder our voice and the greater our impact.
We stand at a critical juncture in history. Don't be silent! Don't miss your chance to make a difference! Don't pass up your opportunity to defend America and bless Israel!
Our leaders need to remember that we are watching them and we need to remember that God is watching us.
The time to speak out for Israel is now! Please register today for CUFI's 2012 DC Summit.

The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:
- Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
- Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
- Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care
The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

AP Textbook Angst
By Mona Charen
May 30, 2012
After several cries of pain from my 16-year-old son, I finally got around to reading his AP World History textbook. Not a way to spend a placid weekend.
Paging through World Civilizations: The Global Experience by Peter N. Stearns et al. is flabbergasting. The authors lean so far backward to be neutral about various cultures and nations that the text fails utterly as reliable history.
In the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union - with all of the copious records that have been exhumed from the Soviet archives and other sources - one might have thought that the sheer human catastrophe caused by Communism ought no longer to be in question among serious people, far less eminent historians. (Actually, there has been no doubt since the 1930s, but the evidence has become even more voluminous since 1989.) Yet throughout this 900-plus-page tome, the brutal body count of Communism's victims is given only glancing notice. Like Soviet apologists during the Cold War era, the authors provide generous interpretations of Communist dictators' motives, along with dry, forgettable descriptions of their atrocities.
World Civilizations tells some of our most advanced tenth-graders that Josef Stalin's collectivization of agriculture "had serious flaws." That's one way of describing a deliberate policy of starving the peasantry into submission. In Harvest of Sorrow, Robert Conquest estimated that the "terror famine" of 1932-33 caused the deaths of at least 5 million Ukrainians, and that Stalin's agriculture collectivization, which included the war on "kulaks" (slightly more prosperous peasants), took the lives of 14.5 million people in all.
You won't find those deaths mentioned in World Civilizations. No, the text instructs students that "after the messy transition period" had ended, "the collective farms did . . . allow normally adequate if minimal food supplies . . . and they did free excess workers to be channeled into the ranks of urban labor."

The White House Defends Public Equity
Up is down, left is right, good is bad, and day is night. If you wander inside the Washington, D.C., beltway, you'll enter a bizarro world where, at times, commonsense is replaced by a localized logic that is completely divorced from the reality. The latest example of political gobbledygook comes courtesy of White House press secretary Jay Carney, who yesterday lapsed into rambling rhetoric when asked to explain how President Obama can defend the failed Solyndra solar boondoggle, yet attack private sector investments that sometimes fail but oftentimes succeed. Here's his response:
Look...there, there, there is the...the...difference in that, your overall view of what...huh, your responsibilities are as president and what your view of the economic future is. And the president believes as he's made clear that a president's responsibility is not just to, ah, those who win but those who, for example in a company where ah, there have been layoffs or a company that has gone bankrupt, that we have to ah make sure that those folks have the means to find other employment, that they have the ability to train for other kinds of work and that's part of the overall responsibility a president has.
Got all that? For the duration of his Administration, President Obama has dished out billions of dollars to politically favored companies in pursuit of job creation and a new "green" economy. It's taxpayer-funded crony capitalism that has neither created new jobs nor produced the green-energy payout that the president was looking for. In fact, it's a policy that has failed miserably, leading to bankruptcy after bankruptcy. Yet despite all the failures -- and zero successes -- the president and his Administration are defending the indefensible and standing by a policy that has squandered taxpayer money. In one instance, President Obama committed $465 million of taxpayer money to Tesla, which was founded by a campaign mega-donor and the 63rd richest man in the world, Elon Musk, to build a $130,000 battery-powered sports car that becomes permanently inoperable if left uncharged for 30 days. It's gotten so bad that Congress is launching probes of federal green energy programs, including the Energy Department loan program, over concerns that lawmakers fast-tracked approval for politically connected companies. Heritage's Lachlan Markay reports that according to a Republican aide on the Senate Budget Committee, "Politically favored, and often connected, renewable energy plans [receive] less rigorous review than traditional energy projects." In one program, of the $20.5 billion in loans granted, $16.4 billion went to companies linked to donors who contributed to Obama and the Democratic Party. At the same time the president is defending his taxpayer-funded failures, he's attacking free enterprise, including in private equity and venture capitalism -- enterprises in which investors voluntarily put up their own money to invest in new ideas and rescue existing companies. Sometimes those ventures fail, sometimes their inevitable failure is delayed but temporarily saves jobs amid restructuring, but many times they succeed -- generating profits and producing new jobs. When Carney was asked to justify the president's defense of one, but criticism of the other, he just couldn't do it. That's no surprise, in that the two positions are logically inconsistent. This episode calls to mind a quote from George Orwell, a frequent and pointed critic of modern political discourse:
In our time, political speech and writing are largely the defence of the indefensible... Thus political language has to consist largely of euphemism, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness... the great enemy of clear language is insincerity. Where there is a gap between one's real and one's declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms ...
Maybe Jay Carney's confused speech is the result of the unbearable heat and humidity that has descended on Washington all too early this year. Or maybe it's a bad case of Potomac fever. But no matter the cause, the results are the same. In Washington, the Obama Administration is hard at work defending the crony capitalist machine while lambasting the free market system -- and it shows no signs of letting up.

Victory Center" on Facebook
-Gabriel Malor
Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on. RedState Morning Briefing
For May 31, 2012
1. The Extraordinary Nature of the Texas Runoff
It is hard to overstate just how extraordinary Ted Cruz's underdog entry into the Texas runoff is and just how the odds are still stacked against him unless conservatives rally quickly with lots of money.
David Dewhurst has been Lt. Governor of Texas for more than a decade. He has massive name ID throughout the state. Ted Cruz started this race with a three or four percent showing in polling.
More so, Dewhurst is a multimillionaire who can write large sums of money to fund his campaign. Ted Cruz cannot. Texas has several of the most expensive media markets in the country and the state is too large to go door to door across the state.
2. AP: Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms Wisconsin job growth.
Readers might remember - certainly The Weekly Standard [TWS] did - that beleaguered Democratic Wisconsin gubernatorial recall candidate Tom Barrett has called into question Republican Scott Walker's contention that the Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS] had reported Wisconsin had actually gained jobs in 2011, instead of the loss of jobs that had been previously reported from another source. Actually, 'called into question' is too mild a term; Barrett more or less called Walker a liar.
3. Don't Bring Back Earmarks!
Some members of congress are trying to reopen the earmark ban through an obscure legislative process. For many conservatives, the two-year moratorium on the practice of earmarking was the signature accomplishment of the new House majority elected in 2010. Yet, the current legislative push by involving Miscellaneous Tariff Bills (MTBs) is being used by the Washington establishment to reopen that moratorium and roll back conservative advances.
4. Law of Sea Treaty A Back Door For Cap And Trade
Conn Carroll had an excellent piece at the Washington Examiner yesterday titled "Obama's Lame Duck Plan To Pass Cap And Trade." Carroll makes the case that Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) may use the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) as a back door to implement cap and trade regulations on United States citizens.
Mike Brownfield of The Heritage Foundation (my employer) wrote a short history of LOST the day before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing last Wednesday.

"Property is the fruit of labor. Property is desirable, is a positive good in the world. That some should be rich shows that others may become rich and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Terror on Twitter: Hamas uses social media platform to 'evoke spirit of jihad,' spread propaganda.

No mistake! Obama backs Muslim Brotherhood again. U.S.-supported Syrian protesters press for open ties with Islamist group. Members of the Syrian opposition are pressing to openly announce an affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood at a meeting scheduled to take place in Turkey later this week, according to informed Middle Eastern security officials.
The opposition has been plagued by infighting, with competing divisions sparing with each other even since the movement was created in September.
Just last week, Syrian National Council leader Burhan Ghalioun announced his resignation after major divisions within his council reached a climax two days after the coalition voted to renew his term for another three months.

The respected black commentator and philosopher Thomas Sowell has described the growing toll of black-on-white violence as a race war. I would take issue with that only because "war" implies a level of organization that supersedes that of the flash mobs. Most of the riot organizers have moved on to cozier job titles, like Al Sharpton, who has gone from organizing riots and boycotts to holding down a desk at MSNBC and serving as the unofficial White House liaison to the black community. The old riots were usually a combination of organized protest and opportunistic violence. The organized riot is on the decline, but the opportunistic violence is still very much with us. There are no shortage of what, the media occasionally describes as, "racially-motivated-attacks". Every society has its outside groups targeted for opportunistic violence. The people you beat up and rob when you're bored and there's nothing good on television. These are people whose lives are worth less than yours, against whom your group holds an enduring grudge against and whom the authorities will not intervene to protect. In America, the outsider is perversely the majority. There was a time when opportunistic violence was white-on-black, but the authorities, both legal and cultural, have done an excellent job of stamping that out. Black-on-white opportunistic violence remains commonplace because it's safe in the same way that a 19th Century lynch mob was safe. While technically illegal, there is little public outrage over it, and the odds of being prosecuted for it are better than any other form of violence. The flash mob, like the lynch mob, relies on safety in numbers, the complicity of the authorities and the weakness of the system to beat the law. Imagine for a moment that you are a black teenager or twenty-something, living in a blighted neighborhood, with few job prospects, a lot of free time and a lot of social networking. You know that white people are "bad", not so much because of the street agitators telling you that white people are the devil, but because the entire society that you live in has been telling you that from Day One. If you made it through high school, which you probably did because every city and town is obsessed with making sure that every student gets through twelve years of educational promotion, then you learned that there is a race war on. A war of white-on-black that began with the slave ships, continued through segregation, and continues today with every report on white racism. Everything you learn tells you that you are on the losing side of a war, that your people are just as good, if not better, yet are being kept down, kept in prison and kept out of power, because of white power. The Nation of Islam believes that white oppression is genetically coded, but that's a view that is marginally distinguishable from mainstream liberalism, which insists that white privilege makes all people part of the oppressive side to an extent that leaves them unable to understand the oppressed or to pass judgment on their suffering and outrage. Your textbooks, unlike Malcolm X, a man you are far more likely to respect than Martin Luther King, who was a doughy preacher type, don't say that white people are the devil. They do however convey that same exact message. The world is a messed up place, and most of your textbooks tell you that white people made it that way. The news, when you watch it, talks often about white racism. The movies only occasionally have black heroes, but they always have white villains.

They placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Ironically, the first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873.
Iran's Offensive in America's Backyard May 30, 2012 11:05 am
While much attention lately has rightly been focused on Iran's nuclear weapons program, the mullahs have also been busy elsewhere-especially in America's own backyard. During Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's two-term presidency, Iran has expanded its activity in the Western Hemisphere to an alarming degree. Tehran has found hospitable terrain among some of Latin America's most anti-American regimes, including in Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Is it fair to say that, in general, black America's perception is off regarding their country which is, in reality, a tremendous gift from God? Canda Moves to Cut Energy Taxes and Regulation as U.S. Energy Policy Falters May 29, 2012 08:17 pm
Our Northern Neighbor Moves to Cut Energy Taxes/Regulation to Boost Its Economy, But Not the U. S. The United States should start taking lessons from Canada regarding oil development and its relationship to a pro-growth regulatory and tax structure. Canadian production of oil sands in northern Alberta is expected to reach 4.1 million barrels a day by 2020, up from last year's production level of 1.6 million barrels per day. This area in Canada is the world's third largest crude oil resource.[i] Unlike the United States, Canada's budget treats its energy resources as assets that should be used for the public good.
20 Signs That Society Is Breaking Down And That America Has Been Overrun By Psychos May 29, 2012 07:44 pm
In order for a society to function successfully, people need to be able to trust one another. Unfortunately, we are rapidly getting to the point where it is very difficult to trust anyone and society is breaking down. Just think about it. Do you trust most politicians? Do you trust most lawyers? Do you trust most bankers? Do you trust the police? As you will read about below, even doctors are going absolutely bonkers these days. So if the "upper crust" of society cannot even be trusted, then what about everyone else? Sadly, the truth is that America has been overrun by psychos.
In the Sixteenth Year of Obama May 29, 2012 03:01 pm
A Scientific Romance of the Year 2024 In the sixteenth year of Obama, Marc and Julie obtained a carbon pass and set off on a light rail journey in a comfortable semi-transparent carriage traveling at a top speed of 30 kilometers per hour whose motive power came entirely from sunshine. As it was a cloudy day, the train moved slowly, often stopping for hours at a time, before sluggishly stirring into motion again, but the young couple did not mind. Obtaining a carbon pass was difficult enough that the very experience of traveling was new to them, as it was to most citizens of the USNAE or the United States of North America and Europe as the grand unified republic was known.

New Push for Old, Dangerous Treaty
|
The Obama Administration is pushing for the ratification of another dangerous treaty. Known as the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST), this United Nations treaty threatens American sovereignty by creating a new international organization to administer 70 percent of the earth's surface.
We don't need another unaccountable international agency, which is why the Senate has refused to ratify LOST for three decades. But now, led by President Obama, liberals and radical environmentalists are beginning a new push for ratification.
>> Learn just how dangerous the Law of the Sea Treaty is.
Under Article 82, the Jamaica-based International Seabed Authority will seize royalties from offshore oil drilling and distribute them to developing nations - even some that may sponsor terrorism. Beyond that, the treaty would require the U.S. to engage in mandatory dispute resolution, which could lead to a U.N.-imposed cap-and-trade style regime.
The House of Representatives has already sent a clear message: the Senate should reject LOST, and if they do not, conservatives in the House will make sure this dangerous treaty cannot be implemented. Undeterred, Senator John Kerry (D-MA) is planning to ratify this fatally flawed treaty during Lame Duck.
>>Arm yourself with the facts: see all the reasons this treaty is fatally flawed.
Get the facts now, so that you can stop the liberal push to ratify this dangerous treaty. Thanks for your support in keeping America free.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Needham Chief Executive Officer Heritage Action for America

May 30, 2012 Professor files freedom of speech lawsuit
|
Make a gift for our Spring Pledge Drive here!
|
When should free speech be limited? According to the Muslim Students Association (MSA), apparently when it hears speech it deems "anti-Muslim." According to the Fox News story below (highlights added), a Purdue University professor who made comments on his Facebook page about Muslims was investigated after complaints by the MSA and other faculty. The professor then filed a lawsuit alleging the investigation violated his free speech rights. One of the faculty members expressed concern for the Saudi students on campus. She went so far as to argue that the "anti-Muslim" comments were comparable to yelling fire in a crowded theater. The implication is that the comments put Muslim students in danger and should be prohibited. Someone needs to remind this professor who complained that we're not living in Saudi Arabia, where speech deemed offensive to Muslims is prohibited and can put a non-Muslim in serious jeopardy. We still have free speech protections here, whether that speech is offensive to Muslims, Jews or Christians.
Professor sues Purdue after probe of his anti-Muslim Facebook comments By Mike Jaccarino FoxNews.com Purdue University Professor Maurice Eisenstein says the school's investigation - which cleared him - still violated his free speech rights. A Purdue University professor has filed a freedom of speech suit against his school and five co-workers after getting in hot water for inflammatory statements about Muslims on his Facebook page. Tenured political science professor Maurice Eisenstein was cleared by a university investigation into his Facebook comments, which included a reference to "the idiot Mohammad [sic}, may his name be cursed." But Eisenstein claims the investigation nonetheless damaged his reputation and disputes a finding that he retaliated against other faculty members. "I was trying to be challenging as a professor, and do what I was trained to do," Eistenstein, who joined the school's faculty in 1993, told FoxNews.com. The flap unfolded late last year, when Eisenstein posted a photo of the aftermath of a massacre of Nigerian Christians, purportedly carried out by African Muslims, on his Facebook page. "Where are the 'moderate' Muslims' reaction to this? Oh, I forgot they are still looking at the earth as flat ...," Eisenstein wrote above the post. Other members of the faculty, as well as members of the Muslim Student Association, learned of the comments and went to school officials. Eisenstein maintained that the post was on his personal page and in no way reflected on the school. History professor Miriam Joyce, who later filed a harassment complaint against Eisenstein, told FoxNews.com the comments could alienate students. "We have Saudi students," Joyce said. "We have other Muslim students. This is wrong. It creates an unpleasant and unwelcoming atmosphere. "I'm concerned that Muslim students and their parents will get the wrong idea about my school." The Muslim Student Association could not be reached for comment. The school's investigation, led by Chancelor Thomas Keon, cleared Eisenstein in January of violating the college's free-speech and anti-harassment rules. However, he received a written reprimand for allegedly retaliating against Joyce, as well as a second professor, Saul Lerner. Eisenstein denied retaliating or harassing his colleagues, but acknowledged a bitter e-mail exchange with Lerner and denies making a callous reference to Joyce's son, a former hedge fund manager who committed suicide. Eisenstein said his freedom-of-speech suit is the result of the university's investigation into his comments about Muslims - even though the probe ostensibly cleared him. "When you investigate free speech, you chill free speech," Eisenstein said. "How am I supposed to do my job without free speech. I've changed. Every time I go into a classroom, I look around and wonder who will complain about what I say." Eisenstein enlisted the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) in bringing his suit against the Big Ten school. "This is not the first time and it won't be the last time we will see a university punish a student or professor for constitutionally protected speech on Facebook," said FIRE President Greg Lukianoff. "Professors at public universities should not have to go to court to defend their free speech rights." Joyce said freedom of speech shouldn't permit a professor at a public school to gratuitously denigrate the beliefs of others, including students at the school. "I'm all for free speech. I want it for me and I want it for everyone else, but there's got to be some judgment used," Joyce said. "You don't cry fire if there isn't a fire and then say it was protected by free speech. Rumsfeld to Newsmax: Sanctions, Diplomacy Won't Work Against Iran
Wednesday, May 30, 2012 02:09 PM
By: Jim Meyers and Kathleen Walter
Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld tells Newsmax that diplomacy and economic sanctions imposed on Iran by the United States and its allies have a "close to zero" chance of ending Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions.
He also predicts that given the dire threat Iran poses, Israel may have "no other choice" but to attack the Islamic Republic's nuclear facilities.

The summer dog days of news are here so let's go with some feel good stuff and bit of break from the daily cesspool that is politics.
A 9 year old boy gets his hands on a free trip to 9 year old paradise, Disney World, and then gave it away.
Brendan Haas created the "Soldier for a Soldier" Facebook page in February. Inspired by the story of the guy who, through a series of trades, turned a paper clip into a house, Haas started with a toy soldier and eventually traded up to $900 worth of Disney gift certificates, airfare and hotel credits.
On Memorial Day, Haas gave the trip to the family of U.S. Army Lt. Timothy Steele, a 25-year-old soldier killed in Afghanistan last year. According to NBC's WHDH-TV affiliate, Haas pulled the name of Liberty Hope Steele, the fallen soldier's now 2-year-old daughter, out of a hat, and surprised the Steele family at their Duxbury, Mass., home.
I'm thinking as soon as word of this gets to the Disney folks, young Mr. Haas will be going to Disney as well.

Holder to brief black pastors on campaign 2012
by Joel Gehrke Commentary Staff Writer
Attorney General Eric Holder, the IRS, and the liberal lawyers at the ACLU will brief several hundred pastors in the African American community on how to participate in the presidential election -- which the Congressional Black Caucus chair expects will help President Obama's campaign. "We will have representatives from nine denominations who actually pastor somewhere in the neighborhood of about 10 million people, and we're going to first of all equip them with the information they need to know about what they can say and what they cannot say in the church that would violate their 501c3 status with the IRS," Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., told MSNBC today. "In fact, we're going to have the IRS administrator there, we're going to have the Attorney General Eric Holder there, we're going to have the lawyers' organization from around the country, the ACLU -- all giving ministers guidance about what they can and cannot do," he noted. Cleaver said they would not tell pastors which candidate to support. They will let them know who to regard as the bad guys, though (hint: not Democrats). "We're going to talk about some of the draconian laws that have cropped up around the country as a result of the 17 percent increase in African American votes," Cleaver said, describing voter ID laws as a form of Jim Crow-style "poll tax" on seniors and black voters. The CBC chairman is confident that "President Obama is going to get 95 percent of the [African American] vote," and wants to keep that turnout high. "We want to let them know that there is a theological responsibility to participate in the political process, at least in the Judeo-Christian tradition," he said.

Polls with Obama even close might be explained by a surge in support from "Power Ranger" voters

By Kevin "Coach" Collins
Barack Obama is not winning any voting bloc he lost in 2008 and he is not doing better with any bloc he did win four years ago.
Nevertheless, the "experts" keep telling us this race is tied or Obama is leading. The only way to explain these "expert'" pronouncements is that Obama has captured the coveted Power Ranger vote. Hey if dead people and illegal aliens can't vote anymore toy dummies must be filling in the gaps for the real ones! As to real people here's the truth of where they stand on Obama.

1) A recent Pew poll found Obama went from up 9points to down 5 points with Catholics just since March. This translates to a shift of 18 million voters.

New York statute will ban internet posting of anonymous comments
May 29, 2012 01:00 pm | Coach Collins
by Doug Book, staff writer
Two New York legislators have taken a page from the playbook of aspiring internet regulator Joe Lieberman by sponsoring a bill which would make the posting of anonymous comments illegal. The bill written by Republican State Senators Dean Murray and Thomas O'Mara states:
"A web site administrator upon request shall remove any comments posted on his or her web site by an anonymous poster unless such anonymous poster agrees to attach his...name to the post and confirms that his...IP address, legal name and home address are accurate. All web site administrators shall have a contact number or e-mail address for such removal requests clearly visible in any sections where comments are posted." (1)
The stated purpose of the Act is"...to amend the civil rights law, in relation to protecting a person's right to know who is behind an anonymous internet posting." GOP whistling past the end of America
|
An election almost as important as the presidential election will be held next Tuesday, and conservatives aren't making a big deal of it, just as they didn't make a fuss over the 2008 Minnesota Senate election as Al Franken stole it from under their noses. (Gov. Tim Pawlenty: "Minnesota has a reputation for clean and fair and good elections. We've got 4,100 precincts run by volunteers. They do a good job, and we thank them.")
The public-sector unions are trying to oust Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker from office for impinging on their princely, taxpayer-supported lifestyles. If Walker goes down, no governor will ever again suggest that snowplow operators work when it snows. No governor will dare try to deprive public school teachers of their Viagra. Forget about ever firing self-paced, self-evaluated, unnecessary government employees.
|
Always leading the nation, California has already been bankrupted by the public-sector unions. That's the country's future if Walker doesn't win, and it's not going to matter who's in the Oval Office.
Democrats know what's at stake. They're treating this election like the Normandy invasion. Meanwhile, Republicans are sitting back, complacently citing polls that show Walker with a slight lead.

"Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclination, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence." --John Adams
Editorial Exegesis
"Mitt Romney 'warned about a "prairie fire of debt." That's what he said,' Mr. Obama said on the Des Moines fairgrounds on Thursday, as if he couldn't believe it either. ... 'What my opponent didn't tell you was that federal spending since I took office has risen at the slowest pace of any President in almost 60 years.' ... [P]ress secretary Jay Carney chimed in [saying] ... to White House reporters that they should not 'buy into the B.S. that you hear about spending and fiscal constraint with regard to this Administration....' Mr. Carney the media critic deeply sourced his view to someone named Rex Nutting, who wrote an 856-word column for MarketWatch that argued 'There has been no huge increase in spending under the current President, despite what you hear.' ... His accounting methods are, er, unusual. Mr. Nutting claims that Mr. Obama is only responsible for $140 billion worth of spending in his hyperactivist first year in office because ... the fiscal year technically begins on October 1, 2009. Therefore he says Mr. Obama had no control over the budget, though in February 2009 he did famously manage to pass an $800 billion stimulus that was supposed to be a one-time deal. Mr. Nutting then measures Mr. Obama's spending growth rate against an inflated 2009 baseline that includes the spending Mr. Obama caused but which he attributes to Mr. Bush. ... The larger conceptual error of the Nutting-Obama-Carney troika is neglecting to compare the budget to the size of the economy. The best perspective on how outlays, tax receipts and deficits change over time is as a share of GDP. ... Prior to Mr. Obama, the U.S. had not spent more than 23.5% of GDP ... since the end of World War II. Yet Mr. Obama has managed to exceed that four years in a row: 25.2% in 2009, 24.1% in 2010 and 2011, and an estimated 24.3% in 2012, up from a range between 18%-21% from 1994-2008. ... As for that prairie fire of debt, Mr. Obama can fairly blame $1 trillion or so of the $5 trillion debt increase of the last four years on Mr. Bush. But what about the other $4 trillion? Debt held by the public now stands at 74.2% of the economy, up from 40.5% at the end of 2008 -- and rising rapidly." --The Wall Street Journal
What responsibility does Obama bear for our fiscal state?
Essential Liberty
"The Origination Clause in Article I, Section 7 states: 'All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.' ... The Founding Fathers required revenue measures to originate in the House because they wanted this authority to belong to the legislative body closest to the people. ... Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) has taken to thumbing his nose at this clear mandate. Recently, he publicly dismissed the Origination Clause as a 'hyper-technical budget issue,' raised by his Republican opponents as 'a fig leaf to hide their blatant obstruction.' ... One unnamed Senate staffer even speculated that the House's fealty to the Constitution 'may be part of some Republican plan.' ... Liberal Senate leaders, it seems, are determined to do what they want when they want to do it, Constitution or no Constitution. ... One of the chief operational principles of the current Senate seems to be, to paraphrase that famous line from Treasure of the Sierra Madre: 'Constitution? We don't need no stinking Constitution!' That's one more reason why the tea-party movement remains politically relevant more than three years after its birth." --Heritage Foundation's Michael G. Franc
Upright
"Barack Obama and his friends in the mainstream media, so called, can't believe that anyone could vote against someone as wonderful as he is (and they are). Only a bigot would vote against such a wonderful president. ... Sixteen states have offered Democratic voters an alternative to Barack Obama, either an actual candidate, 'Uncommitted,' or an opportunity to write in someone's name. So far 15 percent of those Democratic voters have done so. In five states where there has been an actual opponent, 27 percent voted against the president. In New Hampshire, 1 Democrat in 10 wrote in an alternative. Twenty percent of North Carolina Democrats voted for 'Uncommitted.' That's a lot of 'bigots.'" --Washington Times editor emeritus Wesley Pruden
"What do you get when you cross 3 pediatricians, 4 internists, 3 family doctors, 2 epidemiologists, 2 nurses, a PhD, an obstetrician, a perinatologist and an occupational medicine doctor? Unfortunately, this is not a joke. ... This would be the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF), an ad hoc committee charged with making recommendations about clinical preventative services. They have just issued their findings that there is no role for routine PSA screening in men to detect prostate cancer.... You would not go to a pediatrician or obstetrician if you had this disease, so how does it make sense to aggregate 16 such people and have them opine on a subject that they know about only from a book? ... Someone in Washington has decided what the value of a human life is, and what would be the acceptable cost associated with saving it. This is called 'comparative effectiveness' and is what happens in a socialized healthcare system, like in England, where resources need to be allocated prudently, and healthcare is rationed. This is the essence of Obamacare." --columnist Hal C. Scherz, M.D.
"At Cannes, where anti-capitalist movies are always a hit, Brad Pitt's newest venture, 'Killing Them Softly,' is touted as a seething indictment of the American system. 'America isn't a country -- it's a business' is apparently the film's central insight. Set against the backdrop of the 2008 financial crisis, the film was reportedly financed by Megan Ellison, daughter of billionaire businessman Larry Ellison. No wonder that when these kids grow up, some of them make documentaries about how vast conspiracies keep the electric car and, no doubt, the Everlasting Gobstopper off the market. Even more of them uncritically accept this stuff. After all, everyone knows big businessmen are evil." --columnist Jonah Goldberg
The Demo-gogues
Predictions: "This election will be closer than the last one. People don't remember the last election was close. We're gonna have to contend with even more negative ads, even more cynicism and nastiness and just plain foolishness." --Barack Obama
Fulfilling those predictions: "I'm running to pay down our debt in a way that's balanced and responsible. After inheriting a $1 trillion deficit, I signed $2 trillion of spending cuts into law." --Barack Obama
"The challenge we've got is that too many folks aren't on the same page. We've got too many of my dear Republican friends in Congress that have been standing in the way of some steps that we could take that would make a difference at the moment." --Barack Obama
"Nobody wants a handout. Nobody wants to get something for nothing." --Barack Obama
Straw man: "We don't need another political fight about ending a woman's right to choose, or getting rid of Planned Parenthood or taking away affordable birth control." --Barack Obama turning an argument about government's role on its head
Poor taste: "Finally, I do want to acknowledge a man who has played a major role in diminishing inequality in Massachusetts and other spheres, and that's Hubie Jones. ... [I]'m particularly pleased that Hubie got an honorary degree today. You know, when you get an honorary degree they give you one of these and Hubie, I think you now got a hoodie you can wear and no one will shoot at you." --Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) with a "joke" referencing Trayvon Martin's hoodie
Dezinformatsia
Non Compos Mentis: "I feel ... uncomfortable about the word [hero being applied to fallen American soldiers] because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war. Um, and, I don't want to obviously desecrate or disrespect memory of anyone that's fallen, and obviously there are individual circumstances in which there is genuine, tremendous heroism, you know, hail of gunfire, rescuing fellow soldiers, and things like that. But it seems to me that we marshal this word in a way that is problematic. But maybe I'm wrong about that." --MSNBC's Chris Hayes (Hayes did, in fact, admit that he was wrong and apologized.)
Alien thought: "I actually have a serious proposal which is that we have to get a bunch of scientists to tell us that we're facing a threatened alien invasion, and in order to be prepared for that alien invasion we have to do things like build high-speed rail. And the, once we've recovered, we can say, 'Look, there were no aliens.' But look, I mean, whatever it takes because right now we need somebody to spend, and that somebody has to be the U.S. government." --New York Times columnist Paul Krugman
Drool on the chin: "There have been rumors -- if the president is not re-elected [dramatic 'God forbid!' face], or that in the future, that you might consider running for political office. Would you ever? You would be a very popular candidate." --Barbara Walters to Michelle Obama

MAY 30, 2012 With Department of Justice the Latest Victim of Hackers, Many Call for Smart Cybersecurity Strategy
Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice acknowledged that its Bureau of Justice Statistics website had been hacked. The hacker group Anonymous claimed credit for the hack and published 1.7 gigabytes of data, including internal e-mails which possibly contained personal or sensitive information related to crimes, criminals, and crime victims. This was one of several incidents just added to The Heritage Foundation's new report listing cybersecurity breaches affecting U.S. government systems from 2004 to the present. Another new hacker incident hits closer to home for many.
On the Friday before the Memorial Day weekend, it was disclosed that the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), where federal employees bank their pension money, had been breached. Data from more than 120,000 individuals was stolen in a "sophisticated cyber attack." The data lost included Social Security numbers, names, addresses, and in some cases financial information about the account. That combination of data is useful to the thief as a means of falsely claiming a TSP participant's identity.
This ever-growing list of government cyber failures should be a warning to those who think that a top-down, government regulatory regime is the best way to protect our nation from attack. Regulating cybersecurity would impose potentially massive costs on the private sector while providing questionable improvements in security. If this list is any indication, the government doesn't have all the answers. A real cybersecurity solution would start with collaboration: clarifying legal ambiguities and encouraging the sharing of cyber threat and vulnerability information among the private and public sectors. Cybersecurity is a growing problem for the federal government. According to an October 2011 report by the Government Accountability Office, the number of attacks on federal systems grew by nearly a factor of 10 from 2006 to 2010.
By all accounts, the frequency of breaches does not seem to be getting any lower in the last two years, as the breach of the TSP demonstrates.
Hacking and cyber attacks are here to stay, and the U.S. should pursue sensible solutions. What are your ideas on solutions for cybersecurity? Get the full story and share your comments on our blog >>

Freeman v. Quicken Loans, Inc: Big Government Coming after Small Business
This week, the Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision in a rather innocuous case involving the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act. Is the Government Equipped to Develop Effective Cybersecurity Regulations?
As the Senate prepares for its debate over cybersecurity legislation, one of the most important questions it will have to address is whether the federal government, acting through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), should play a significant role in crafting cybersecurity regulations that will govern activities of the private sector as well as of government. Proponents of such a role, embodied in Title I of the Lieberman-Collins Cybersecurity Act of 2012, contend that the private sector has done an inadequate job of protecting itself and that market incentives have not developed appropriately to promote self-protection. Opponents of Title I argue that the government is ill equipped to develop effective cybersecurity regulations and that the regulatory process is too cumbersome for the development of rules and standards applicable to the dynamic cyberdomain.

Extend Whistle-Blower Protections to Union Employees
Whistle-blower laws prevent employers from retaliating against employees who report illegal activity. These laws encourage employees to reveal illegal behavior-and discourage employers from breaking the law in the first place. However, whistle-blower protections do not protect employees of labor unions. Unions can legally fire their own employees for raising allegations of corruption.

Some conservatives in Congress would like to remove the Transportation Security Administration's monopoly status, and lessen the financial burden on American taxpayers by allowing airports to hire private security companies.
Rep. John Mica's (R-FL) Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure recently found that other countries' governments successfully oversee the employment of private security companies to perform security tasks. This is also true here at home. Heritage expert Jessica Zuckerman explains that private security screening was found to be more efficient than TSA screening.

Filmmaker Exposes the Ruinous Cost and Human Fallout of Illegal Immigration
We'll Send You This Fantastic Film FREE
Director Dennis Michael Lynch wanted to capture the truth about illegal immigration. What he created was a film so powerful that film-festival sponsors and theater owners decided it was too politically incorrect to be shown.
Audiences that have had the rare chance to see it have fallen in love with this film. So has our staff ... and reviewers, too! Here's what legendary radio host Barry Farber said:
"Everyone lights a fire in some way, but Dennis Michael Lynch is a volcano. The best movie about illegal immigration Americans have ever been treated to. This can change things!"
-Barry Farber of CRN radio
That's why we want to get this into every home in the country. When you see it, you'll know why. So here's what I've arranged to do . . . When you make a donation to NumbersUSA this month, we'll ship you this dynamite documentary on DVD FREE OF CHARGE.
What "They Come To America" Proves
Have you ever argued with family or friends about illegal immigration? Have you felt sometimes that other people "just don't get" the consequences? Pop that movie in your DVD player or computer, and sit back with a few friends or family. Slowly, you'll see everyone get still and quiet. Everyone will be frozen, eyes glued to the screen, unless they start shouting at the people interviewed who say illegal immigration is perfectly okay or even desirable.
This is what Dennis Michael Lynch says about his own film:
"I am not a political guy. There is no political agenda fueling this film. Truth is, before making this film I never gave a single thought to illegal immigration. And yet, for some crazy reason, I went as far as risking my life to produce a non-partisan documentary about the hottest political topic in America. What's even crazier is why so many people won't want you to see my film.
"They Come to America is anything but politically correct. There is no slant to the left or right. I am not a racist, I don't hate Latinos, I am not funded by anyone. What I am is a film maker who has made a film that exposes the truth, and the truth is illegal immigration is an issue ignored by too many politicians. It is a crime that comes at a tremendous human and financial cost to both Americans and illegals immigrants."
-Dennis Michael Lynch, Filmmaker
How To Get Your Own Copy
Believe me, once you see the 90 second preview, you'll want to see the whole film. (Make any size donation to NumbersUSA and we'll send you a DVD of this movie FREE!)
There are so many great moments in this movie. How about illegal aliens who confess everything on camera . . . how they snuck into this country, how they avoid taxes, how they underbid Americans. There's also a wild scene where Dennis is chased by Mexican drug dealers at the border. (You'll have to pardon him; he swears some when he's afraid for his life.)
One great, two-minute sequence is a cut-down version of Roy Beck's immigration charts video. Have you seen Roy explaining how our population will double because of immigration? The film is well worth seeing even if it just had this one scene!
Linda, this is a documentary film that could change the way America sees illegal immigration. Frustrated that so many citizens don't understand the dangers of illegal immigration? Get your copy of "They Come To America," and you will make all of your friends and family believers! You'll see the human aspect that tugs at your heart and you also see the huge problems illegal immigration is creating financially, culturally, and politically in this country.
Last night, I showed the movie at home. My wife, a pretty tough critic, watched the whole thing in absolute silence. The second it was over, she turned to me and said, "Wow, you've got to get that into the hands of all your members. It's inexcusable. Numbers has been right all along. This has got to be solved on the federal level. If you try to do something yourselves, you'll get shot, you'll get killed, you'll be called a vigilante."
Still not sure? Just take a minute and watch this preview, and you'll understand why you must get this film and show it to everyone you know! It's important!
If you give to NumbersUSA in any of these four ways, we will send you a free copy of "They Come To America:"
1) On-line credit card We take all major cards. Make a gift, and we'll send you the DVD.
2) Give by PayPal. We'll send you a DVD of the film right away.
3) Check -- see the instructions and a form to print out and send with your check. You'll get your copy of the DVD through the mail very soon.
4) Call (877) 885-7733 to arrange a wire transfer, stock donation, or to make a credit card donation over the phone. If our office is closed, please leave the time and your phone number and we will call back. When you give over the phone, we'll send you your copy of the DVD "They Come To America."
Can't afford to give? Please reply to this email, give your name and address, and we'll ask the filmmaker to get a showing in your area.

Wednesday, May 30, 2012 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 160 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS Romney Secures Nomination After taking 69% of the vote in yesterday's Texas primary, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney won the final delegates he needed to secure the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. Speaking to supporters in Las Vegas last night, Romney said: "It's an honor and a privilege ... and a great responsibility. And I know the road to 1,144 was long and hard, but I also know that the road to November 6, is also going to be long, it's going to be hard and it's going to be worth it because we're going to take back the White House and get America right again." Congratulations, Governor Romney. In 160 days, we can and we must end the Obama nightmare! U.N. Me The United Nations has been in the headlines lately. Demonstrating just how impotent the organization is, more than 100 civilians were massacred in Syria last week in spite of the U.N.'s negotiated ceasefire. And days before that atrocity, news broke that the people charged with ending corruption and fraud within the U.N. "are often not qualified" and "hampered by potential conflicts of interest." Hard-working American taxpayers provide billions of dollars to the U.N. each year. And what are we getting for it? You can find out June 1st by watching "U.N. Me" in theaters or through video on demand. While the film is rated PG-13, the subject matter it is definitely intended for the most mature teenagers and adults. But Ami Horowitz' sarcastic wit keeps you entertained while the shocking details of corruption and incompetence grab your attention. I'm proud to promote "U.N. Me" in order to expose this outrageous abuse of taxpayers' money. Click here to watch a trailer. Then see the film in theaters this weekend or enjoy it in the comfort of your own home through iTunes or your cable company's On Demand feature. Please tell your friends and family members about "U.N. Me." Another Democrat Abandons Obama's Party Yesterday I told you about Jo Ann Nardelli, the Catholic, pro-life, former Pennsylvania Democratic state committeewoman who joined the GOP when Obama and Biden embraced same-sex "marriage." Today Artur Davis confirmed that he too is joining the Republican Party. What makes Davis' switch significant? If a former gubernatorial candidate and four-term member of Congress switched from Republican to Democrat a few years ago, the left-wing media would have gleefully reported that lawmakers were abandoning the GOP over George W. Bush's extremism. But even worse for the left, Davis is black! Imagine that -- a black Democrat joining the Republican Party in the age of Obama. Read Davis' statement explaining his switch here. Lessons From The Medal Of Freedom Awards President Obama awarded the Medal of Freedom to more than a dozen recipients yesterday. It is the highest honor the president can award to a civilian for their service to the United States. But the ceremony also provided two important lessons about this administration. First, in spite of the tingling in Chris Matthews' leg, this is not the smartest White House in history. The media rejoiced when Obama was elected because he would not embarrass us like that "cowboy" Bush. But Obama seriously offended our ally Poland yesterday when he referred to "Polish death camps" while honoring Jan Karski, who exposed the Nazi concentration camps in Poland. It may seem like a minor slip of the tongue, but Polish officials are furious, and blasting the White House for its "ignorance and incompetence." Obama's decision to award the Medal of Freedom to Dolores Huerta highlights his ideological extremism. While Obama praised Huerta for her work organizing farm workers, he neglected to mention that she is an admirer of Hugo Chavez and an honorary chair of the Democratic Socialists of America. Huerta also made headlines for saying "Republicans hate Latinos." Is Obama Organizing Black Pastors? One of the most frustrating aspects of my work is the reticence of many pastors to engage in the public policy process. Every election year left-wing groups send out intimidating letters warning pastors to not put their tax exempt status in jeopardy. Sadly, these letters have the desired effect of cowing many pastors into silence. But the side that is committed to "fundamentally transforming" America is not so hesitant. This week the Conference of National Black Churches is meeting in Washington, D.C. Dominating their agenda today is role of the church in the 2012 election. Attorney General Eric Holder delivered the keynote address this morning. Holder's remarks were followed by a session on combating voter ID laws, which included representatives from the ACLU and other left-wing legal groups. This afternoon two top officials of the IRS addressed the conference. That was followed by panel discussion entitled "Voting Rights Call To Action." Tomorrow the conference will hold a "conversation" about same-sex "marriage." There is tremendous irony in the fact that blacks are among the most religious Americans, yet they vote overwhelmingly for a party that is increasingly hostile to faith and family. But at what point do scriptural truths about the sanctity of life and marriage trump loyalty to a party or a person? Land Under Fire Dr. Richard Land is a fixture in Washington, D.C. He has been representing the public policy interests of Southern Baptists as president of Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission since 1988. Dr. Land is a good friend and has been a stalwart ally in the fight for family, faith and freedom. In addition to his Washington work, he also hosts a weekly radio show. Recently, Dr. Land commented on the Trayvon Martin case and expressed his outrage at the race baiting antics of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Sensing an opportunity to take down one of the pro-family movement's most influential leaders, the left pounced and accused Land of racism. In addition, charges of plagiarism were made against him. I've known Richard for years and have always respected him as a man of the utmost character and integrity. It is inconceivable that these charges are true. But they remind me of the attacks on Rush Limbaugh and other conservative leaders, including me. The left never misses an opportunity to try to silence conservative voices, and it goes for the jugular every time.

E.J. Dionne's self-refuting shot at Mitt Romney
Posted: 30 May 2012 02:49 PM PDT
(Paul Mirengoff)
In a previous post, I commented on a piece in which E.J. Dionne argues that contemporary conservatism has abandoned the most attractive features of the traditional conservative movement. I tried to show that Dionne's thesis is based on a gross distortion of the conservative tradition in America and, indeed, of the conservative scholar on whose work Dionne mainly relies.
Before taking aim at conservatism, Dionne took a shot at Mitt Romney. Here is his opening paragraph:
To secure his standing as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney has disowned every sliver of moderation in his record. He's moved to the right on tax cuts and twisted himself into a pretzel over the health-care plan he championed in Massachusetts - because conservatives are no longer allowed to acknowledge that government can improve citizens' lives.
Dionne's second sentence refutes his first. If Romney had "disowned every sliver of moderation in his record" he would not have "twisted himself into a pretzel over Romneycare - his most notorious piece of moderation. Instead, he would simply have disowned it. And through his continued support of Romneycare, the former governor plainly acknowledged that, in his opinion, government can improve citizens' lives.
But what of Dionne's claim that Romney has twisted himself into a pretzel? This, I gather, is an article of faith among Dionne's regular readers, for he doesn't expand on the assertion. Presumably, Dionne believes that one cannot, with intellectual honestly, consider the Massachusetts plan (which Romney refused to disown) a good idea without also subscribing to Obamacare.
Dionne is wrong again. For one thing, there are strong, and quite possibly winning, arguments that Obamacare is unconstitutional. The arguments that have been advanced to support this proposition do not apply to a state law such as Romneycare.
The Constitution matters to conservatives.
Moreover, Romney believes that the federal government cannot afford Obamacare. For a number of reasons, Massachusetts arguably could afford Romneycare. It had a relatively low number of uninsured citizens. It didn't face the kind of debt crisis that now confronts the U.S. In fact, Massachusetts had a balanced budget at the time. And Massachusetts was able to obtain a waiver from the federal government that allowed it to use $583 million in federal money to help kick-start its universal health insurance program. Taxes were not increased and funds were not "borrowed" to pay for Romneycare. This is not true of Obamacare.
Fiscal responsibility matters to conservatives.
Finally, Romneycare, as enacted under Romney, entailed far less government regulation and control of health care than Obamacare does. The Obamacare bill is more than 2,000 pages long. The bill Romney signed into law is 70 pages. In Massachusetts, insurance companies were not, effectively, placed under government control, nor did Massachusetts become the default health care provider in that state.
Excessive government regulation matters to conservatives.
Dionne apparently believes that Obamacare and Romneycare both were good ideas. I believe that Obamacare is a bad idea and that the same is probably true of Romneycare.
But there are important differences between the two programs, such that one can support the Massachusetts program, oppose the federal one, and remain untwisted.

A Tsunami of Exaggeration
Posted: 30 May 2012 01:11 PM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
One of the current obsessions is how much debris from the tsunami in Japan last year-some of it possibly radioactive!!!-will be washing ashore in North America. Usha Lee McFarling writes in the Los Angeles Times that we should all calm down:
First, there is no giant carpet of items making its way across the ocean. Immediately after the disaster, there were large rafts of debris - roofs and lumber and upturned boats clustered together - but these rapidly broke up. . .
How much debris is still out there? Headlines about the "staggering mess" reported that 20 million tons of flotsam - a "garbage wave" - could wash up on Hawaii's beaches. Other reports claimed 100 million tons of tsunami debris is on its way to the West Coast.
These numbers are vastly inflated. The Japanese government estimates that nearly 5 million tons of debris washed into the ocean during the tsunami. About 70% of that sank, according to NOAA. That left 1.5 million tons of floating items such as buoys, oil drums, lumber and boats. More than a year later, some of that debris has sunk or degraded.
But regardless of how much debris there is, I'm still confused. I thought every man-made thing that got into the ocean ended up swirling around in the middle of the Pacific, in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (or gyre). McFarling points out:
It's clear that the vast amount of debris generated by the Japanese tsunami is just a small fraction of the human detritus that already fouls the oceans. Our seas already hold more trash than would be produced by dozens, if not hundreds, of tsunamis. And more is added each day.

Crony Capitalism and Defense Spending
Posted: 30 May 2012 12:20 PM PDT
(Paul Mirengoff)
Today, I visited one of my favorite post-retirement haunts, the American Enterprise Institute, to hear a speech by Ashton Carter, the Deputy Secretary of Defense. Carter spoke on a wide range of defense issues, but the very first substantive point he made was that, in the current budgetary environment (and quite apart from the prospect of sequestration), Congress should not be forcing pet projects and systems on the Department of Defense. As Carter explained, for every pet project or system forced on it, the Department must forgo spending on projects and systems that fit its plans for the military of 2020.
Carter's point made me think of a recent piece in the Daily Beast by Peter Schweizer called "Crony Capitalism Creeps Into the Defense Budget." Schweizer complains that Congress is making military spending decisions that place extraneous considerations ahead of sound policymaking. He cites the recent rejection, by an overwhelming vote of 44-18 in the House Armed Services Committee, of a plan to close military bases. And he cites pressure from Capitol Hill for weapons systems that the Pentagon doesn't want. Deputy Secretary Carter also mentioned both developments.
If this congressional pressure were based on a good faith disagreement about the merits, it would be understandable, though still potentially problematic. But Schweizer argues that the pressure is often the product of "crony capitalism," not a clear-headed assessment of defense needs.
Compounding the problem is that members of Congress making these decisions have family members who serve as lobbyists for defense contractors. Congressman Bill Young (R-Fla.) is the chairman of the powerful appropriation subcommittee on the House Armed Services Committee. His daughter serves as a lobbyist for defense contractors, and in the past Young has steered money to contractors that employed his sons.
Members of Congress who sit on these committees can and often do own defense stocks. The Washington Post found in 2010 that 19 of the 28 members of the Senate Armed Services Committee held investments in military- and defense-related companies that did big business with the Pentagon. As Gordon England, who served as a senior Pentagon official in the George W. Bush administration told the Post, "I am frankly surprised they are allowed to have these investments. Every member of this committee has tremendous influence over every major contract at the Pentagon."
There was a time, perhaps, when U.S. defense spending could accommodate both our strategic interests/defense needs and the political needs of our legislators. Ashton Carter and Peter Schweizer correctly insist that this time has passed.

The friends of Barack Obama
Posted: 30 May 2012 12:03 PM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
Haaretz gives us the text, which appears to have been altered slightly since it was originally posted:
Earlier Tuesday afternoon, Obama and White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew met about 20 Conservative Jewish community leaders. ...
"I not going to tell you again how I even feel about Israel, but why [are] we still talking about it," Obama said, reminding his guests that all his friends in Chicago were Jewish - and at the beginning of his political career he was accused of being a puppet of the Israel lobby. ...
Obama also stressed he probably knows about Judaism more than any other president, because he read about it - and wondered how come no one asks Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner or Senate minority leader Mitch McConnel [sic] about their support to Israel."
Bill Kristol makes three points in his midrash, as Obama would call it:
1. The reason no one asks John Boehner or Mitch McConnell about their support for Israel is ... because they really do support Israel. The reason people ask Barack Obama about his support for Israel is because his support for Israel has been equivocal.
2. It's truly pathetic that Obama has to reach for the tired (to say the least) trope that some of his best friends were Jewish. Actually, one wishes more of his best friends were pro-Israel Christians. They might have had more luck convincing him, a fellow Christian, that he should be pro-Israel.
3. And the claim that Obama knows more about Judaism than any president? His vanity boggles the mind. One could begin by citing Adams and Madison, who knew Hebrew, or Harry Truman, who knew Jewish history ... but it's silly to dignify this claim with a rebuttal. In thinking about the presidents since Truman, though, I'd guess the president who knew the most about Judaism was Jimmy Carter, who taught Sunday school and had a deep interest in religion. So let's stipulate that of the modern presidents, Carter and Obama "know" the most about Judaism. But what is it they know? In Obama's case, one could ask whether what he "knows" is what he learned from Rashid Khalidi and Jeremiah Wright.
I would add to Bill's midrash:
4. Obama seems to have suggested that all his friends in Chicago were Jewish. But we know he left out more than a few friends. How about Bill Ayers? Reverend Wright? Tony Rezko? Valerie Jarrett? Eric Whitaker?
5. I don't doubt that he had Jewish friends in Chicago, but c'mon. This is so lame. The guy has become a habitual liar.
Again, that's me speaking in points 4 and 5, not Bill.

Jan Karski's message
Posted: 30 May 2012 06:14 AM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
Jake Tapper reports that President Obama offended our Polish friends with his reference to a "Polish death camp" in his remarks yesterday awarding Jan Karski the Presidential Medal of Freedom. (The Nazi death camp, incidentally, would have been Belzec.) Karski was the incredibly brave courier who brought the West word of the Holocaust in 1942. Karski emigrated to the United States, earned a Ph.D. at Georgetown after the war and taught at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service. He died an American citizen in 2000.
Our Polish friends are not pulling their punches:
"The White House will apologize for this outrageous error," Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski tweeted. Sikorski said that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk "will make a statement in the morning. It's a pity that this important ceremony was upstaged by ignorance and incompetence."
Well, there is a lot of that going around in the administration, frequently in the guise of "smart diplomacy." After quoting the White House's exculpatory efforts yesterday, Tapper dryly notes toward the end of his report: "It seems likely that a more formal apology will need to be issued." Nile Gardiner piles on here.
Obama's remarks at the White House ceremony yesterday are posted here. The citation of Karski prepared by the White House is a little confused. (See, for example, this account.) The citation fails to do justice to Karski's story, but it isn't bad:
Karski served as an officer in the Polish Underground during World War II and carried among the first eye-witness accounts of the Holocaust to the world. He worked as a courier, entering the Warsaw ghetto and the Nazi Izbica transit camp, where he saw first-hand the atrocities occurring under Nazi occupation [Karski proceeded to sneak into Belzec, to which I assume this must mean to refer]. Karski later traveled to London to meet with the Polish government-in-exile and with British government officials. He subsequently traveled to the United States and met with President Roosevelt. Karski published Story of a Secret State, earned a Ph.D at Georgetown University, and became a professor at Georgetown's School of Foreign Service. Born in 1914, Karski became a U.S. citizen in 1954 and died in 2000.
I first learned of Karski's story in Walter Laqueur's The Terrible Secret: Suppression of the Truth About hitler's "Final Solution," published in 1980 (and first learned of Laqueur's book from George Will's excellent column on it in the Washington Post that year).
Laqueur notes that Karski patiently submitted to his detailed questioning in a September 1979 interview and even wrote out for him the message that he conveyed to President Roosevelt, Anthony Eden and others in 1942 and 1943. According to Laqueur, it could not be published during the war. Karski's message is included in Appendix 5 to Laqueur's book. Laqueur comments elsewhere in the book:
Democratic societies demonstrated on this occasion as on many others, before and after, that they are incapable of understanding political regimes of a different character....Democratic societies are accustomed to think in liberal, pragmatic categories; conflicts are believed to be based on misunderstandings and can be solved with a minimum of good will; extremism is a temporary aberration, so is irrational behavior in general, such as intolerance, cruelty, etc. The effort needed to overcome such basic psychological handicaps is immense....Each new generation faces this challenge again, for experience cannot be inherited.
President Obama and the rest of his administration could learn some timely lessons from Karski's story, if only they were capable of learning.
UPDATE: Sikorksi telegraphed this punch, and Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk is not pulling it: "I am convinced that our American friends can today allow themselves a stronger reaction than a simple expression of regret from the White House spokesman - a reaction more inclined to eliminate once and for all these kinds of errors," Tusk told reporters in Warsaw. "Today, this is a problem for the reputation of the United States," the prime minister said.
