Author says Wright helped Obama accept Christianity without renouncing Islam

Joe Newby   May 15, 2012

Spokane Conservative Examiner

Edward Klein, author of the new book "The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House," told Sean Hannity Monday that Jeremiah Wright, the controversial former pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ, "made it comfortable" for Barack Obama to accept Christianity without having to renounce his "Islamic background," the Daily Caller reported Monday.

Klein told Hannity that even before Obama became a member of Wright's church, "he was very close to the Reverend Wright, who was like a second father to him."

He went on to say that Wright was Obama's spiritual and political advisor.

"In fact, the Reverend Wright told me, on tape, that Obama came to him and said, 'I need some spiritual advice, I don't know exactly who I am,' and the Reverend Wright said - and this is on tape - well, we know your Islam background, and you have that, but what you need now, is some coaching on Christianity," Klein said, adding that he asked Wright if he converted Obama to Christianity from Islam.

"He said, 'I don't know if I could go that far, but I can tell you that I made it comfortable for him to accept Christianity without having to renounce his Islamic background," Klein recalled.

Obama's Unique Form of 'Christianity:'No Baptism Or Renunciation of Islam Required

New questions arise lately concerning whether President Obama is a Muslim or a Christian, as Mr. Obama gives his partial support to the mosque at Ground Zero.

By Madeline Brooks, August 21, 2010

We've all heard by now that Obama became a Christian mostly to expedite his political career and that the Trinity United Church of Christ he joined, presided over by Reverend Jonathan Wright, was not exactly mainstream. We've heard about Wright's damning of America and we know that the church was - and might still be - a hot bed of black nationalism. But what is not as well known is that no baptism is required, nor must Muslims renounce Islam to be accepted as full members in that church. On a tip from a pastor, which I wrote about here I called the Trinity United Church back in February, 2010 to ask about the requirements of membership. The church receptionist transferred my call to the Director of Membership, who told me that baptism is optional and that Muslims who believe in the prophet Mohammed can be full members. In fact, she reassured me cheerfully, they have plenty of Muslim members.

Media Teams with Obama Campaign to Intimidate Super PAC

What we're learning today is the way in which the corrupt media intends to work with the Obama campaign to silence political free speech through the form of super PACs, and that's sheer intimidation.

As of right now, all of the MSM is in full passive-aggressive outrage mode over this New York Times' story about a plan proposed to a super PAC that will finally do what the media refused to do in 2008, and that's to give President Obama's creepy, 20-year relationship with Reverend "God damn America!" Wright all the attention it deserves:

The plan, which is awaiting approval, calls for running commercials linking Mr. Obama to incendiary comments by his former spiritual adviser, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., whose race-related sermons made him a highly charged figure in the 2008 campaign.

Part Two: The Fiction and Non-Fiction of Obama

  • May 13, 2012

In Part I of this report, we examined President Obama's earliest role models and the influence each likely had on him as he shaped his worldview. With an anti-colonialist father, a mother who rejected Western society, a communist mentor, a domestic-terrorist benefactor, and an anti-Semitic preacher, the reasons behind Obama's past and present actions come more sharply into focus. Below, we navigate through just some of the president's questionable political positions.

Glenn Beck Reviews Barack Obamas Contradictions

"Brave" enough to order the killing Osama bin Laden...but had a back-up memo to blame the military in case it went wrong?

The entire Obama administration along with the American left has heaped praise on the president for his "daring" and "brave" decision to send a Navy SEAL team into an Abottobbad compound to assassinate 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. In fact, Obama has even used the accomplishment as the crux of his latest campaign ad - a move even liberal mediaite Arianna Huffington deemed despicable. Yet in April it was revealed that then-CIA Director Leon Panetta drafted a memo that included an escape clause for the president should the operation go awry [emphasis added]: "The timing, operational decision making and control are in Admiral McRaven's hands. The approval is provided on the risk profile presented to the President. Any additional risks are to be brought back to the President for his consideration. The direction is to go in and get bin Laden and if he is not there, to get out." In plain-speak, Obama chose to blame the military, through "Patsy" Admiral McRaven, should the mission to kill bin Laden fail. Does this sound like something a Commander in Chief would or should ever do? The Wall Street Journal adds:

By allowing our attention to be focused exclusively on the danger and prevention of terrorism, we ignore the many other ways we are being attacked. Specifically, we are missing what our Islamist enemies call their 'civilization jihad' - a form of warfare that employs manipulative financial techniques, lawfare, infiltration of our civil institutions and government and insidious information dominance. Together, these have the effect of exploiting our liberties and governing structures against us, so that our leaders wind up imposing the very anti-American values that our enemies promote.

Welcome to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within - a 10-part, web-based video briefing that is designed to explain why and how this is happening.

It addresses a threat most Americans are unaware even exists within our country, let alone the degree of peril it represents.
The threat is the totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine its adherents call "shariah" and the organized, disciplined and increasingly successful efforts by such adherents-- most especially the Muslim Brotherhood-- to bring it here.

We are making this course available in the hope of encouraging, informing and broadening support for national efforts to defeat the insinuation into this country of shariah's anti-constitutional and seditious program.

The U.S. Constitution

A Reader

Featuring 113 primary source documents, The U.S. Constitution: A Reader was developed for teaching the core course on the U.S. Constitution at Hillsdale College.

Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.

About Hillsdale College

Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."

Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs.

Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012.

We're going to Washington, D.C. to stand with Israel

From July 16 through July 18, 2012, Christians United for Israel will be holding its 7th Annual Washington Summit. We're going back to stand with Israel in our nation's capital. This year - more than ever - we need you to join us!

In the coming months, critical decisions are going to be made about Iran, Israel and the world. Finally, Washington is beginning to focus on the issue of a nuclear Iran. Many of our leaders want to confront this looming threat. But others want to keep kicking the can down the road. The debate is far from over.

  • We know that when thousands of CUFI activists arrive in DC and on Capitol Hill, we can change the conversation.
  • We can remind our leaders that a nuclear Iran is not only a threat to Israel, but to the US as well. And we can demonstrate to our elected officials that their constituents care enough about this issue to show up at their DC offices.
  • We know that we can create a sense of immediacy that's otherwise lacking.
  • We know that the more of us who show up and speak out -- the louder our voice and the greater our impact.

We stand at a critical juncture in history. Don't be silent! Don't miss your chance to make a difference! Don't pass up your opportunity to defend America and bless Israel!

Our leaders need to remember that we are watching them and we need to remember that God is watching us.

The time to speak out for Israel is now!
Please register today for CUFI's 2012 DC Summit.

The Heritage Foundation The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress

A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress

Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:

  • Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
  • Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
  • Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care

The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

Patriot Action Network

Patriot Action Network

We are the Tea Party

On Thursday, our staff finalized the most explosive resource that Grassfire has ever published. It's called 69 Obama Lies. It's a Fantastic Resource for this election year!

I believe 69 Obama Lies is the most thorough "vetting" of Obama's actual words in print. And I know it is going to outrage the Left because we actually hold Obama accountable for what he said!

69 Obama Lies

Dear Patriot,

About six weeks ago, our staff set out with the goal of putting the "truth detector" to what Obama has actually said. What we realized is Obama has lied so pervasively and thoroughly that even our staff had forgotten many of his most outrageous fibs! That's when we realized we had to create a written record of the Obama Lies.

When we finished, we had created a 122-page, 20,000-word dossier that documents a disturbing cross-section of fibs, falsehoods, and fabrications that our President has used to win votes while implementing his radical agenda. Go here to see a larger image of the cover and the full list of 69 Obama Lies we have documented:

http://www.grassfire.com/24098/offer.asp?Ref_ID=600013

+ + The Lies that got Obama elected...

69 Obama Lies is organized in six sections that cover everything from the lies Obama has told about himself (we call these "ObamaLies"), to his campaign lies, his lies about government and taxes, ObamaCare and domestic and foreign policy.

They are all here -- and footnoted so you will have complete documentation. We start with the ObamaLies -- his denial of Rev. Wright.... the "normalcy" of his church... the Bill Ayers lie... the ACORN lie... and Obama's "Brother's Keeper" lie which exposes his Marxist core.

Let's be clear -- it was these  "ObamaLies" along with his campaign lies that got Obama elected in the first place. Obama's ability to cloak his real beliefs and his real associations (with the willing help of the liberal media) kept his campaign moving forward.

But we don't stop there....

+ + Obama's "Big Government" Lies

69 Obama Lies also tracks the BIG LIE that Obama sold to the American people just after Inauguration Day -- that massive deficit spending would "create and save" jobs and restore the economy.

It was all a LIE. We know that now. But it is vitally important to have the facts laid out in an orderly fashion. That's precisely what 69 Obama Lies does. We expose the full range of Obama's Big Government lies...

The "Create Or Save Jobs" Lie...

The Stimulus Law is Working" Lie...

The "I'll Cut The Deficit" Lie...

The "Government Motors" Lie...

The "Cash for Clunkers" Lie...

The "Rich Pay Less In Taxes" Lie...

+ + Border Lies, ObamaCare Lies... Energy Lies...

69 Obama Lies literally covers every aspect of Obama's presidency -- from his lies about border security and immigration to his lies about gas prices and green jobs.

We saved a whole section for Obama's signature legislative "achievement" -- ObamaCare. We've identified a Baker's Dozen of fibs Obama told just to get ObamaCare passed.

And please note that each of the 69 Obama Lies is like a mini research report -- clearly laying out the specific Obama lie and fully documenting our sources.

You get the actual words of Obama set against the truth -- the LIE next to the reality check. Go here to request your copies and see the complete list of 69 Lies:

+ + 69 Obama Lies Begins Shipping In Two Weeks!

If you can help Grassfire with a contribution of ANY AMOUNT (even a few dollars to cover printing and shipping), we'll send you TWO COPIES of "69 Obama Lies" -- one to keep and one to share with a friend.

We have asked the printer to rush the first printing of 69 Obama Lies so we can get this resource into our team members' hands as quickly as possible.

As a result, we expect to begin shipping 69 Obama Lies the week of April 23.

In order to be included in our first shipment, please let me
hear from you as soon as
possible. Go here to request your two copies:

http://www.grassfire.com/24098/offer.asp?Ref_ID=600013

I truly believe 69 Obama Lies is the most thorough and most important resource Grassfire has ever created. And I want to put it in the hands of every Grassfire team member.

Please take a moment to order your two copies of 69 Obama Lies today, and thanks for the stand you are taking.

Steve Elliott

Grassfire Nation

Siren

Contact your Senators and ask them to vote for S2205  to stop the Hillary /Obama UN gun control

New Senate Bill Keeps The U.N. From Dictating U.S. Gun Laws! As the United Nations Works Hard to Dismantle U.S. Gun Rights, Senate responds with bill to stop it even if treaty is signed.

Now, the U.S. Senate has LISTENED to your activism and a vehicle exists to stop the UN in its tracks, even if this abomination is rammed down our throats, the federal government will be prohibited from spending a dime to make it happen.  Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) has introduced S.2205.  INSIST THAT BOTH THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE PASS S.2205 NOW!

A BILL

To prohibit funding to negotiate a United Nations Arms Trade Treaty that restricts the Second Amendment rights of United States citizens.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the Second Amendment Sovereignty Act of 2012.

SEC. 2. FINDINGS; SENSE OF CONGRESS.

(a) Findings- Congress makes the following findings:

(1) In October 2009, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced the United States support and participation in negotiating the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, to be finalized in 2012, signaling a shift in United States policy.

(2) An Arms Trade Treaty that regulates the domestic manufacturer, possession, or purchase of civilian firearms and ammunition would infringe on the rights of United States citizens protected under the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

(b) Sense of Congress- It is the sense of Congress that the sovereignty of the United States and the constitutionally protected freedoms of American gun owners must be upheld and not be undermined by the Arms Trade Treaty.

SEC. 3. PROHIBITION ON FUNDING.

No funds may be obligated or expended to use the voice, vote, and influence of the United States, in connection with negotiations for a United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, to restrict in any way the rights of United States citizens under the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States, or to otherwise regulate domestic manufacture, assembly, possession, use, transfer, or purchase of firearms, ammunition, or related items, including small arms, light weapons, or related materials.

Just in case you missed it, the proposed UN treaty would include:

  • Establishment of a new UN agency, the Implementation Support Unit, with power to regulate anything having to do with guns that might be sold internationally;
  • A requirement that every country submit its gun control plan to the UN;
  • A requirement for every country to implement internal tracking of all gun sales within its borders (outright registration!); and,
  • A ridiculously expensive requirement for every single of round of ammunition to be stamped with a unique serial number.

Congress HAS to support S.2205 in order to thwart President Obama, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, and the gun-grabbers at the UN!

As former U.S. ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, once stated: "This [treaty] will strengthen the hand of a government that wants to regulate private ownership of firearms."

You've expressed your outrage. Now, Senator Moran has listened and we have A REAL BILL TO STOP THIS! The only way for the bill to get through Congress is for YOU to push it through.  Insist Congress Stand Up for the Second Amendment

Sincerely,

P.S.: The gun grabbers at the United Nations, gleeful to have as socialist of an American President as Obama, will stop at nothing to TAKE YOUR GUNS. Please, help us today.

PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY!

House Republicans say emails link green energy loans to White House

by Audrey Hudson
05/17/2012

House Republicans investigating the collapse of Solyndra are now examining other green energy companies to determine if their government-backed loans were risky gambles that were granted because of political influence with the White House.

"When taxpayers lost over a half-billion dollars on Solyndra, the Obama administration said that it was just one bad apple and that the rest of the portfolio was strong," said Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee on regulatory affairs, stimulus oversight and government spending.

"It is becoming increasingly clear that Solyndra was just the tip of the iceberg in a sea of taxpayer risk," Jordan said during a hearing this week.

Victory Center" on Facebook

-Gabriel Malor

Last week I had the opportunity to get a sneak-peek at the RNC's new Facebook application. Designed, in the words of one RNC staffer to "take our message where the people are," the Social Victory Center app will, among other things, hook users up with campaign news targeted based on their location and preferences (which Facebook already knows, of course), let users join volunteer efforts, distribute voter registration forms, and provide an online phone bank, all without leaving the Facebook website. It will also, if users wish, put those activities on the user's Facebook wall, letting their friends see what they're up to and, hopefully, encouraging them to join in.

GOP Facebook

It's an attempt to leverage Facebook's popularity in a new way and, at the moment, the Democrats have nothing like it. The Social Victory Center was unveiled to the public yesterday, so if you're on Facebook, check it out. As the general election ramps up, check back for volunteer activities as they're added. Also, like I did in 2008, I'll be pushing online phone banking in the final weeks of the election, only this time the RNC will have done the heavy-lifting that the McCain team wasn't too keen on.

RedState Morning Briefing

RedState Morning Briefing

For May 21, 2012

1. Thomas Fuentes, R.I.P.

You probably did not know Thomas Fuentes. I did.

He sat on the board of Eagle Publishing, Inc., our parent company. Today comes word that the Lord has finally called him home after a long battle with cancer.

Tom Fuentes was a grand man. He was a conservative fighter. Two words for you: Orange County. In the seventies, Orange County, California was starting to drift left. Tom Fuentes stopped that drift. He made Orange County safe for conservatives. From 1984 to 2004, he served as county GOP Chairman. Unlike so many, Tom Fuentes did not build up an organization making himself the indispensable man whose work would collapse without him. A true leader, he built up Orange County so it could go on as a Republican juggernaut.

Many men in conservative politics whose organizations will collapse the moment they are gone could take lessons from what Tom Fuentes did.

He will be missed.

2. Obama Once Again Shifting the Blame on Gas Prices

This week, President Obama and Interior Secretary Salazar returned to familiar territory, once again chastising energy companies for maintaining an inventory of undrilled Federal leases.

3. Tom Barrett (D CAND, WI-GOV RECALL) passes on honoring slain cops to... stump-speech the UAW.

When it came out last week that Milwaukee mayor (and Wisconsin Democratic candidate for governor in the upcoming recall election) Tom Barrett had skipped out on two ceremonies honoring Milwaukee police officers, there was some questions about what Barrett thought could possibly be more important that going to, say, a memorial service for slain Wisconsin policemen. It probably didn't help either that Barrett was so evasive about the answer, either - to the point of convenient memory loss. Well, it turns out that Barrett probably wanted to forget the answer of where he was doing instead of honoring fallen officers, given that the answer was... 'making a stump speech.'

4. Ad Wars

I am a rabid online video consumer. I love them, I watch them, I make them. The greatest thing about online videos is that, unlike television, the creators have all the time they need to explain their point and they are, more importantly, a relatively inexpensive way to react quickly to the opposition.

I'm not sure the Obama administration has figured out yet that between our continual victories on twitter and our exploding video production capabilities, they aren't the only game in town anymore. Back in 2008, most tech savvy people found the McCain campaign to be woefully inadequate online. This doesn't appear to the be the case this election cycle with Romney's camp & conservative SuperPACs pushing new content almost daily.

It is also making for an interesting back and forth between competing narratives. Take for instance this ad from American Crossroads about Obama's broken promises.

Ask which part of this simple statement by Thomas Jefferson the Obama administration finds so hard to understand:

"A wise and frugal government which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave the mother wise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government."

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but I think it is GREAT!

Only 49 more

  states to go!!!!!!!

Hooray for Florida!

I-95 and I-75 will be jammed for the next month or so with druggies and deadbeats heading North out of Florida, because this is the first state in the union to require drug testing to receive welfare!

Hooray for Florida!

In signing the new law, Republican Gov. Rick Scott said,

"If Floridians want welfare, they better make sure they are drug-free".

Applicants must pay for the drug test, but are reimbursed if they test drug-free.

Applicants who test positive for illicit substances won't be eligible for the funds for a year, or until they undergo treatment.

Those who fail a second time will be banned from receiving funds for three years!

Naturally, a few people are crying this is unconstitutional.

How is this unconstitutional?

It's a legal requirement that every person applying for a JOB has to pass drug tests in order to get the JOB, why not those who receive welfare?

Forward this if you agree!

Let's get welfare back to the ones who NEED it, not to those who WON'T get a JOB.

I AGREE, DO YOU?

60 Minutes Veils Education Jihad

By Janet Levy

While the mainstream media continues to promote Turkey as a successful example of the coexistence of Islam, democracy, and economic stability -- referring to the country as "a bridge between East and West" and a potential asset to the European Union -- this view couldn't be farther from reality.

In fact, Turkey has descended farther into the abyss of Islamization as it continues to refuse to acknowledge its genocide of Armenians, Assyrians, Greek Christians, and other minorities; denies its decades-long repression of its Kurdish population; and persists in its illegal occupation of the Republic of Cyprus. Islamic instruction, under the guise of religious culture and ethics classes, has become mandatory in state schools, further signaling the demise of secularism in Turkey. Meanwhile, veiling, an emblem of Islamization, has increased significantly within the last decade.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's public statements have also defied this optimistic view of Turkey as a "moderate" Islamic state. In 2007, he was quoted in Milliyet commenting on the term "moderate Islam" to describe his party, the AKP: "These descriptions are ugly, it is offensive and an insult to our religion. There is no moderate or immoderate Islam. Islam is Islam and that's it." On democracy, Erdoğan has said, "Democracy is like a street car; you ride it as far as you need, and then you get off." About the function of mosques, he said, "The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers."

It is clear that Turkey is reverting to its historical Ottoman Empire-inspired Islamic fundamentalism. At the same time, it is pursuing a stealth or cultural jihad against the West, in large part through the efforts of Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish Islamic theologian. Gülen has spawned the worldwide Gülen Movement, which pretends to espouse "understanding and respect" but in truth is dedicated to spreading the beliefs and influence of Islam and Turkey, especially through creation of Gülen schools, which now number more than 130 in 26 states in America.

From Democracy to Sharia   May 19, 2012 03:16 pm

The 'Arab Spring' shows that democratic process is useless without democratic culture.

A few weeks ago, amid the "Arab Spring" giddiness, a Shiite mosque opened in Cairo. This was big news. Among Egypt's 80 million people, there are only a few thousand Shiites. It's a 90 percent Sunni country, with even Christians vastly outnumbering the Shia. So, in their euphoria over the mosque's inauguration, Shiite clerics heralded this Husseiniya (as Shiite mosques are known) as a symbol of rapprochement. The mosque would bridge the sectarian divide: a Shia center in this bustling Sunni city, yet a house of worship, thus emphasizing what unites rather than divides Muslims in one of Islam's most important nations.

New Poll: End of Gender Gap or Proof of Credibility Gap?   May 19, 2012 02:18 am

The Obama campaign is complaining about the latest New York Times/CBS poll, because of its "methodology." Their real complaint, however, is with the results. Whereas in April, the poll showed that in a general election match-up between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, Obama was ahead among women voters by 49% - 43%, now, in the latest poll, Romney is ahead among women by 46% - 44%, which is within the three-point margin of error, but represents an eight-point swing in one month. After the Sandra Fluke/contraception issue, and the whole "GOP war on women" theme pushed by Obama and his media allies, these numbers seemed surprising. But, in fact, they indicate that a majority of women aren't buying it.

Muslim Persecution of Christians: April, 2012   May 18, 2012 07:07 pm

(Editor's Note) The continued persecution of Christians by Muslims on the global stage in plain site continues unabated due to the refusal of mainstream news to turn their cameras and journalists upon them.  Muslims are committing gruesome murders, beheadings, severe and deadly beatings, church attacks and destruction, rapes, killing of children and all in the name of Allah, their God of this religion of peace.  Their actions truly show Islam is a religion of hate and death.

Terrorism and the Exceptional Individual   May 18, 2012 11:59 am

There has been a lot of chatter in intelligence and academic circles about al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) bombmaker Ibrahim al-Asiri and his value to AQAP. The disclosure last week of a thwarted AQAP plot to attack U.S. airliners using an improved version of an "underwear bomb" used in the December 2009 attempted attack aboard a commercial airplane and the disclosure of the U.S. government's easing of the rules of engagement for unmanned aerial vehicle strikes in Yemen played into these discussions. People are debating how al-Asiri's death would affect the organization. A similar debate undoubtedly will erupt if AQAP leader Nasir al-Wahayshi is captured or killed.

Agenda 21 Conspiracy Theory or Threat   May 17, 2012 09:25 pm

The battle over Agenda 21 is raging across the nation. City and County Councils have become war zones as citizens question the origins of development plans and planners deny any international connections to the UN's Agenda 21. What is the truth? Since I helped start this war, I believe it is up to me to help with the answers.

The standard points made by those who deny any Agenda 21 connection is that:

Tea Party Should Oppose Latest Terrorist Bill of Rights   May 17, 2012 02:20 pm

The reckless crew is at it again.

Libertarian extremists, who purport to be the face of the tea party movement, and their pals on the Lawyer Left, whose obsession is more rights for mass-murderers, are again making common cause. Their target, once more, is the detention procedure codified in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This time the ringleaders are Representatives Justin Amash (R., MI) and Adam Smith (D., WA). With a new NDAA up for consideration, these congressmen are reprising the starring role played a few months back by Sen. Rand Paul (R., KY). I argued in opposition to Sen. Paul's gambit here and here.

An analysis of the voting patterns that barrelled François Hollande to victory on May 6 as the first Socialist president of France since 1995 shows that this overthrow was due in large measure to Muslims, who voted for him in overwhelming numbers.

America's Antique Air Force

America's flying fortress, the Cold War-era B-52 bomber, has been in service for the last 50 years, running missions in Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, Afghanistan and the war in Iraq. It's a striking example of how America's military is being forced to do more with less, relying on decades-old technology to confront today's challenges. Unfortunately, the B-52 is only one example of the United States' geriatric fighting force, and with mounting cuts to the military, America's ability to defend itself is increasingly called into question.

In a new "America at Risk" video from The Heritage Foundation, David A. Deptula, a retired three-star general, gives his view of America's aging Air Force. It's a story he has experienced first hand. Deptula flew an F-15 for the first time in 1977, and 30 years later, his son, Lt. David A. Deptula II, flew the same F-15 at Kadena Air Force Base in Japan. The fighter, which was initially planned to have a 4,000-hour service life, later saw its mission extended to 8,000 hours. Heritage's Rob Bluey reports on one harrowing incident where Deptula came face to face with the consequences of stretching U.S. forces to their limits:

While serving as the joint task force commander in 1998 and 1999 for Operation Northern Watch, Deptula flew 82 combat missions over Iraq. On one mission, as he was headed to a tanker to refuel, the master caution light came on, revealing a problem with the plane. His fuel gauge went to zero. Meanwhile, he was 500 miles away from his base. Fortunately, he was able to land safely.

'The insulation was so old it simply had deteriorated to the extent where it came off and all of the wiring shorted out,' Deptula explained. 'Those are the kinds of things that happen when airplanes get to certain ages.'

While his aircraft was grounded, another set of airplanes traveled from Kadena Air Force Base in Japan, on other side of the world, to replace the one that was being repaired.

Ultimately, the Air Force was forced to ground its entire F-15 fleet after one fighter disintegrated during a training mission in Missouri in 2007. In a new paper, Heritage's Steven Bucci explains the consequences of continuing the trend of cutting the military and stretching U.S. forces:

The Obama Administration is seemingly trying to find ways to pay for the expansion of entitlement spending programs at the expense of the military force, arguing that military spending is a drain on the economy rather than a protector of American society.

While everyone, including military leadership, wants more efficiencies, cutbacks in military programs motivated solely by cost savings are ill-advised. Cutting many of the at-risk programs will leave the U.S. military where they were post-World War II and post-Cold War: hollow and ill-prepared for growing threats.

Stretching the life of military aircraft puts our fighting men and women in mortal danger, and it poses threats for the U.S. armed forces as a whole. In Heritage's video, Deptula says, "I hear people talk about, well you know, the U.S. military spends more money than the next 17 nations combined. Well, the next 17 nations combined are not committed to maintaining peace and stability around the world. We are." But in order to keep that commitment, Congress and the Administration must ensure that the U.S. military has the resources it needs to carry out its mission of protecting America.

Don't Miss It: Be sure to watch Dave Deptula's story in Heritage's newest "America at Risk" video! Click here to watch.

Some Republicans in the House of Representatives are working to end the ban on earmarks early next year, despite opposition from Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).

Untangling the Web of Pakistani Terrorist Groups and their Links to al-Qaeda

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

2:00PM

The Heritage Foundation's Lehrman Auditorium

The recently released documents found at Osama bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad reveal the importance of al-Qaeda affiliate organizations in carrying out the terrorist group's global agenda. Furthermore, they show the central role the war in Afghanistan plays for al-Qaeda in inspiring extremists to revolt around the world and re-confirm the close relationship between the Taliban and al-Qaeda.  Join us as our panelists discuss these issues as the U.S. Congress debates the future of U.S. aid to Pakistan and the way forward for U.S.-Pakistan relations.

The U.S. Must Move Cautiously on Taliban Reconciliation

By Lisa Curtis

While President Obama is drawing down U.S. troops in Afghanistan, he is attempting to negotiate with the Taliban-despite the fact that the Taliban has renounced neither terrorism nor its support for al-Qaeda. If the Taliban is able to regain influence in Afghanistan without breaking ties with international terrorism, al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups could re-establish safe haven there. A Taliban victory in Afghanistan would also strengthen Islamist extremist forces in Pakistan, undermining civilian democracy and emboldening hard-line elements within the Pakistani security establishment, which controls the country's expanding nuclear weapons arsenal. Rather than long-shot talks with the Taliban leadership, Washington should focus on strengthening anti-Taliban elements that share the U.S. interest in preventing Afghanistan from again serving as a safe haven for international terrorists.

Scarborough Shoal and Safeguarding American Interests

By Walter Lohman

For a month, the Philippines and the People's Republic of China (PRC) have been deadlocked in a sovereignty dispute off the Philippine main island of Luzon, around Scarborough Shoal. The situation, which began with a Philippine warship challenging private Chinese poachers in the waters around the shoal, has evolved into something on which no less than the credibility of America's commitment to peace and security in the Pacific hinges.

The U.S. has two major interests at stake in the impasse: the security of treaty allies and freedom of navigation. If the Obama Administration mishandles this situation, all the "pivoting" (to the Pacific) in the world will not make up for it.

 Act for America Education

May 18, 2012

You MUST see this! WOW!

  • There's a compelling reason why ACT! for America Education produced a report exposing bias and historical revisionism in public school textbooks.
  • There's a compelling reason why ACT! for America holds a national conference and encourages you to attend.
  • There's a compelling reason why ACT! for America just launched its Spring Pledge Drive.

We urge you, PLEASE view this video.   PLEASE pass it on to others.

In the video, Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad makes crystal clear, leaving NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER, what sharia law means for non-Muslims and the West.

Watch closely what he says about "equality," "rights," "peace" and "war." Note when he refers to "dhimmi" status (second class citizenship) and "coexistence."

What the sheikh is spelling out is the supremacist ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood, ISNA, CAIR, the Muslim Students Association, MPAC, the Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America, etc., etc. Groups like ISNA and CAIR may cloak their true beliefs and intentions in soothing platitudes about equality and tolerance, but make no mistake about what they truly believe.

This is why CAIR fights so hard against "American Laws for American Courts" legislation.

This supremacist ideology is overwhelming Europe and the UK and is being planted in our midst here in America. We cannot afford to be deceived, for the future of our nation hangs in the balance.

  • View our textbook report here.
  • Learn more about our national conference here.
  • Join our spring pledge drive here.

NumbersUSA This Issue: New Senate bills are slap in the face to recent college grads

With 54% of recent American college graduates jobless or not in a degree job, Senators of both parties were falling all over themselves this week to push legislation that would add more foreign competitors in their job markets. Two separate bills -- the STAR Act introduced by Sen. John Cornyn of Texas and the SMART Jobs Act introduced by Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware -- would increase the number of green cards issued to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges and universities with degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).

The STAR Act would eliminate the Visa Lottery (which goes to foreign workers of all skill s) and transfer the 55,000 annual green cards to foreign students who graduate with advanced degrees in a STEM discipline. Should any of the new green cards go unused, they roll over to the next year - a provision that doesn't currently exist in the Visa Lottery program.

The STAR Act not only allows foreign graduates to compete directly with U.S. graduates for tech jobs, but it allows U.S. employers to discriminate against American graduates. Unlike the H-1B temporary visa program, employers are free to hire a foreign worker even if a willing and able American worker is available for the job.

The SMART Jobs Act is even worse. The proposal by Sens. Alexander and Coons has all the bad features of the STAR Act but it allows the Visa Lottery to continue to give out 55,000 permanent work permits to foreign workers each year. And the bill exempts green cards awarded to foreign students from other employer-based numerical limits. The sky's the limit with this bill!

Sen. Alexander claims to have wide bi-partisan support for this attack on American college graduates. According to an Associated Press analysis of labor data, recent college graduates (under the age of 25) are having a terrible time finding a job that is associated with a college degree. The AP reports that 54% of recent college grads either have no job at all or are underemployed (as in bar-tending, pizza delivery, etc.).

We've put new faxes up on your Action Board urging your two U.S. Senators not to add extra competition in the job market for college graduates. Also, watch our weekly webcast that discusses these two bills.

All Things to All People
President Clinton was, as we all know, the nation's first black president. Now Newsweek has declared Obama to be America's first gay president which means the first gay president will probably have to settle for being called the first alien president and, after that, the first alien president will be out of luck.

Unwilling to allow any of his future successors to corner the market on identity, the Washington Post has dubbed Obama; "The First Female President", which is ironic given how his victory actually prevented the election of the country's first female president. But the only way for Obama to win the war on women may be by going transgender.

Last year New York Magazine put Obama in a Kippa and stuck him on the cover as the "First Jewish President." Before that he had already been dubbed the "First Asian-American President", cementing his appeal as all things to all people. And why not, when we live in a wonderful time when anyone can be anything they want.

Elizabeth Warren, with her strong northern European features, and an ancestor who participated in the "Trail of Tears", can be recognized as a "Woman of Color," and, when challenged on her claim, the media rolls out a dozen pieces suggesting that Cherokee ancestry is some sort of vague unstructured concept that can't be quantified with rigid standards such as actually having a Cherokee ancestor.

Over in Florida, that infamous white menace, George Zimmerman is standing trial and if the trial doesn't go Holder's way, the attorney general will charge him with a hate crime. In a saner world, there would be more chances of Holder going to jail for the mass murder of Latinos as part of a plot to subvert the Bill of Rights; than there would be of a Latino man being lynched as a white racist.

But we don't live in a sane world, we live in a post-racial world, where everything is racial and nothing is racial. Where race is meaningful and meaningless, everywhere and nowhere, where everyone who wants to be someone has a victim identity in their wallet and an essay on the plight of their people.

The age of Obama is truly a post-racial one, not in the sense that race doesn't matter, it actually matters more than ever, but that it no longer exists as a concrete identity. Race, gender and sexual orientation are just variables that you adopt if you like, but once you've adopted them, then you insist that they are an inescapable part of you and that you are one of the oppressed.

Friday Afternoon Roundup - A Day in May

DISUNION SQUARED

I passed through Union Square on Wednesday. The park on the square happens to be the fallback point of Occupy Wall Street, but the OWS crowd was a little hard to spot. Oh there were a few vendors in the business of selling "radical" T-Shirts and pins, proceeds to either benefit the occupation or him, but the rest of the occupation was hard to find.

The breakdancers working for tips weren't with OWS, but what about the clown with pink hair? The men playing chess for money obviously weren't, that was too capitalist an activity. The NYU students sitting around and drinking soda? The guy playing jazz on a sax? The Halal mafia vendor sending smoke and a burnt smell from his cart? The dogwalkers? The artists drawing cartoons of tourists? The vendors at the farmer's market unloading ostrich meat and gourmet goat cheese?

The signs reading GENERAL STRIKE MAY 1and STOP EVERYTHING are still pasted to walls, but the first has come and gone and there was more of a showing in Moscow than in New York City. Some of the signs urged everyone not to come in to work or school or even do housework, but defying the housework strike I vacuumed my rug on the first. For now a giant inflatable rat hasn't shown up outside my window.

Finally I encountered a grossly obese man in union gear with a white hard hat and a sign around his neck ranting about billionaire war criminals or something equally stupid. I was going to snap a photo, but then I realized that would justify him standing there. OWS is a media driven phenomenon. Ignore it and it goes away.

I passed him by as he argued feverishly with a man in a business suit about something or other. Near the curb the breakdancers were hitting their rhythm and Mexican illegal aliens were selling t-shirts with a picture of armed Indians and text reading, "Homeland Security" and something about repelling terrorists for hundreds of years. It's not the type of shirt you ever see a Mexican or actual Indian wearing, but some of the more radical white college kids probably love it.

After September 11, the leftists occupied Union Square for a month or two. I saw them on that very day writing up peace signs and cautioning against vengeance. Most people paid them no attention. The weeks wore on and they scrawled peace signs on the statue of George Washington marking evacuation day and did the usual Occupy Wall Street antics, long before there was an OWS or anyone was paying to them. Eventually they got evicted and the statue cleaned up.

Living in New York City you learn to deal with pests of all kinds, but the thing about pests is that they eventually go away. Sic Transit OWS. Take the A Train, hook up with Metro North and go home.

Hawaii won't send official confirmation of Obama's birth to Arizona because it can't

May 20, 2012 06:13 am | Coach Collins

Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett is saying he is "stunned" that after eight weeks election officials in Hawaii still have not provided  him with even so much as an Email confirming they have proper documentation on record regarding Barack Obama's official birth certificate.

Because of their lack of official reply, Bennett is considering keeping Obama off of the Democrat ballot in Arizona! "For some reason they haven't been willing to say yes," the AZ SoS told radio talk show host Mike Broomhead.  Bennett said he's received over 1,200 Emails from his state's citizens asking him to require Barack Obama to produce an original birth certificate.  "This is impossible to get," because states only provide certified copies of the original document.  But the State of Hawaii apparently won't even do that or even Email confirmation according to their new rule changes.  "Hawaii can't or won't answer. . .do you have ... Army Day formerly was the date the US entered World War I, Navy Day was President Theodore Roosevelt's birthday and Air Force Day was the day the War Department established a division of aeronautics.
President Richard Nixon remarked on Armed Forces Day, MAY 19, 1973, at Norfolk Naval Base:
"Men and women who wear the uniform of our country are supposed to salute the Commander in Chief...But on this day, I, as your Commander in Chief, salute you, each and every American who serves in our Army, our Navy, our Air Force, our Marine Corps, and our Coast Guard.
Your courage, your steadfastness are the backbone of America's influence for peace around the world...We owe you...a debt of gratitude we can never fully repay...

Judge strikes down NDAA, rules Obama must obey Constitution

May 19, 2012 01:00 pm | Coach Collins

by Doug Book,  staff writer

In a considerable setback for a president eager to ravage the due process rights of the American people, Federal Judge Kathleen Forrest granted a preliminary injunction on Wednesday, striking down those sections of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2012 which sought to provide Barack Obama the power to indefinitely detain citizens without benefit of their 5th Amendment rights.

Signed very quietly into law on New Year's Eve, the controversial Act has been roundly criticized as unconstitutional by groups on both the political left and right. Of greatest concern was Section 1021 which grants the United States military authority to exercise police powers on American soil. Upon order of the president and at his sole discretion, agents of the military are empowered to detain "until the end of hostilities" anyone the president believes to have "substantially supported" al Qaeda, the Taliban or "associated forces." Diplomatic Bluster? No, just Obama kicking the Iranian nuclear threat down the road

May 19, 2012 06:13 am | Coach Collins

By Jim Emerson, staff writer

In a war of words between the United States and Iran over the regime's nuclear program the US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro announced that the US had a plan ready for possible military strikes on Iran. This threat was made to make the Obama Administration look tough prior the resumption of talks with the Iranians to try to get them halt their nuclear weapons program. The United States considers military action as the last resort if diplomatic efforts should fail.

In what some consider an effort to appeal to American Jewish voters, this show of willingness to use force could be seen as pandering to Israel after years of mistreating and criticizing the Jewish State and its leaders. Having our Ambassador to Israel make a public pronouncement promising to bolster an Israeli missile defense system known as the 'Iron Dome' during an election year may be seen as a cynical effort to ... American Minute May 18

   By Bill Federer, staff writer

On MAY 18, 1920, in a small town in Poland, Karol Wojtyla was born.
A chemical worker during World War II, he risked punishment by Communists for being ordained a priest.
In 1967, he became Archbishop of Krakow and, in 1978, he became Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope since 1522.
Leader of one billion Catholics, Pope John Paul spoke eight languages and traveled a million miles in 170 countries - more than any other pope.
In 1981, he survived an assassination attempt by a Muslim Turk, whom he forgave during a prison visit.
Regarding Islam, Pope John Paul wrote in Crossing the Threshold of Hope (1995):
"Islam is not a religion of redemption. There is no room for the Cross and the Resurrection...The tragedy of redemption is completely absent...
In Islam, all the richness of God's self-revelation, which constitutes the heritage of ... Continue Reading:American Minute May 18

Democrat media cheerleaders can't talk away the truth: Obama is probably even losing Wisconsin

May 18, 2012 01:13 pm | Coach Collins

 By Kevin "Coach" Collins

In 2008 Barack Obama won Wisconsin by a landslide 56/42, but according to a new Marquette Law School (MLS) poll, that was then, this is now and "now" isn't looking very good for Obama. Because the 2010 election of Wisconsin's Governor Scott Walker represented a major defeat for unions in general and the state's unions in particular there has been almost endless series of recalls of Republicans and some of Democrats.

All of these recalls provide a uniquely accurate picture of the sentiment of Wisconsin's voters - by a reliable margin they don't favor Democrats or unions.

The next recall election forces both Walker and his Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch to stand for election again.  The Democrats are running Tom Barrett the Mayor of Milwaukee setting up a rematch of 2010's election. In that one Walker won by 5 points and after all of the nonstop attacks against him and tens of millions of ... Will Black ministers learn what Evangelical ministers have learned about trying to sway voters?

May 18, 2012 06:13 am | Coach Collins

By Kevin "Coach" Collins

When Barack Obama announced his support for Gay "marriage" it caused a predictable firestorm among Black ministers. Coming immediately after the 32nd straight loss for Gay "marriage", Obama's announcement was transparently cynical and widely recognized as a politically desperate move. One group that was not pleased with the President was his Black church going base.

A number of African American ministers spoke out and condemned Obama's support for Gay "marriage" as a contradiction of the Bible they preach from every Sunday.

One such minister is Rev. Emmett Burns, a Baltimore area preacher, who came out breathing fire about Obama's announcement last Sunday. Burns said he would not support Obama in November and predicted his defeat.

Nevertheless, the next day, Burns who is also an elected Democrat legislator, walked back from his condemnation and said he would continue to support Obama. He will now urge his congregation to forget what he said ... Continue Reading:Will Black ministers learn what Evangelical ministers have learned about trying to sway voters?

Does May 19's NATO Summit in Chicago have Communist symbolism?

May 17, 2012 01:13 pm | Coach Collins

  By George Spelvin, staff writer

Curious indeed is the choice of the date of May 19 for this week's NATO Summit in Chicago. How about this for symbolism? This is the same date listed as the "May 19 Communist Coalition, May 19 Communist Organization or rather just M19CO".  Why would Obama and his schedulers  happen to pick the date of May 19 to invite leaders from around the world to descend on the city that launched him into politics, namely Chicago?  Was a master plan for the usurpation of America as a land of the free hatched way back in the Ayers days of rage during the Chicago burning era of anti war protests? Is the Occupy Wall Street crowd just the grandchildren of the 60's era hippies hell bent on remaking America into a land of the Socialists, not the land of inalienable rights of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness?

Enviros to Humanity: Drop Dead (Again)

Posted: 20 May 2012 02:04 PM PDT

(Steven Hayward)

It's only Sunday, but this week's hands-down, slam-dunk winner of the coveted Power Line Green Loser of the Week Award has already been determined: the Finnish writer Pentti Linkola (doesn't that sound close to the name of the villain in Thor and The Avengers?), whose unhinged rantings about exterminating humanity in the interest of saving the planet have gotten wide distribution on the Interwebs the last few days, especially the ZeroHedge guest post entitled "The Face of Genocidal Eco-Fascism."  But let Linkola speak for himself, on his own website, where he openly advocates "eco-fascism":

"What to do, when a ship carrying a hundred passengers suddenly capsizes and there is only one lifeboat? When the lifeboat is full, those who hate life will try to load it with more people and sink the lot. Those who love and respect life will take the ship's axe and sever the extra hands that cling to the sides."

"The composition of the Greens seems to be the same as that of the population in general - mainly pieces of drifting wood, people who never think."

"A minority can never have any other effective means to influence the course of matters but through the use of violence."

"Any dictatorship would be better than modern democracy. There cannot be so incompetent dictator, that he would show more stupidity than a majority of the people. Best dictatorship would be one where lots of heads would roll and government would prevent any economical growth."

"The most central and irrational faith among people is the faith in technology and economical growth. Its priests believe until their death that material prosperity bring enjoyment and happiness - even though all the proofs in history have shown that only lack and attempt cause a life worth living, that the material prosperity doesn't bring anything else than despair. These priests believe in technology still when they choke in their gas masks."

"Alternative movements and groups are a welcome relief and a present for the society of economic growth."

"We will have to...learn from the history of revolutionary movements - the national socialists, the Finnish Stalinists, from the many stages of the Russian revolution, from the methods of the Red Brigades - and forget our narcissistic selves."

"Everything we have developed over the last 100 years should be destroyed."

"If the present amount of Earths population is preserved and is reduced only by the means of birth control, then:

- Birthgiving must be licenced. To enhance population quality, genetically or socially unfit homes will be denied offspring, so that several birth licences can be allowed to families of quality.

- Energy production must be drastically reduced. Electricity is allowed only for the most necessary lighting and communications.

- Food: Hunting must be made more efficient. Human diet will include rats and invertebrate animals. Agriculture moves to small un-mechanized units. All human manure is used as fertilizer.

- Traffic is mostly done with bicycles and rowing boats. Private cars are confiscated. Long-distance travel is done with sparse mass transport. Trees will be planted on most roads.

- Foreign affairs: All mass immigration and most of import-export trade must stop. Cross-border travel is allowed only for small numbers of diplomats and correspondents.

- Business will mostly end. Manufacture is allowed only for well argumented needs. All major manufacturing capacity is state owned. Products will be durable and last for generations.

- Science and schooling: Education will concentrate on practical skills. All competition is rooted out. Technological research is reduced to extreme minimum. But every child will learn how to clean a fish in a way that only the big shiny bones are left over."

He even includes approving links to the Unabomber Manifesto, but his link doesn't work for some reason: darn that advanced technology anyway.  But I've saved the best for last:

The United States symbolises the worst ideologies in the world: growth and freedom.

Now, your average environmentalist will dismiss Linkola as a nutcase, and perhaps he is.  However, you can find much the same sort of thinking from quite a few "respectable" people whom mainstream environmentalists never distance themselves from.  I wrote about this problem in the Claremont Review of Books a couple years ago, noting the anti-liberal and anti-democratic strain of thought near the heart of modern greenery:

This preference for soft despotism has become more concrete with the increasing panic over global warming in the past few years. Several environmental authors now argue openly that democracy itself is the obstacle and needs to be abandoned. A year ago a senior fellow emeritus at Britain's Policy Studies Institute, Mayer Hillman, author of How We Can Save the Planet, told a reporter, "When the chips are down I think democracy is a less important goal than is the protection of the planet from the death of life, the end of life on it. This [rationing] has got to be imposed on people whether they like it or not." (Hillman openly advocates resource rationing.) Another recent self-explanatory book is The Climate Change Challenge and the Failure of Democracy by Australians David Shearman and Joseph Wayne Smith. Shearman argued recently that "[l]iberal democracy is sweet and addictive and indeed in the most extreme case, the U.S.A., unbridled individual liberty overwhelms many of the collective needs of the citizens.... There must be open minds to look critically at liberal democracy. Reform must involve the adoption of structures to act quickly regardless of some perceived liberties."

Whom does Shearman admire as an example of environmental governance to be emulated? China, precisely because of its authoritarian government: "[T]he savvy Chinese rulers may be first out of the blocks to assuage greenhouse emissions and they will succeed by delivering orders.... We are going to have to look at how authoritarian decisions based on consensus science can be implemented to contain greenhouse emissions." Separately, Shearman has written: "To retain an inhabitable earth we may have to compromise the eternal vicissitudes of democracy for an informed leadership that directs. There are countries that fall within this requirement and we should use them to initiate more active mitigation.... The People's Republic of China may hold the key to innovative measures that can both arrest the expected surge in emissions from developing countries and provide developed nations with the means to alternative energy. China curbs individual freedom in favour of communal need. The State will implement those measures seen to be in the common good."

Perhaps the film version will be called An Inconvenient Democracy.Academic political theorists who take up what might be called "green constitutionalism" understand that Lockean liberalism has to be overturned and replaced. In The Green State: Rethinking Democracy and Sovereignty, Australian political scientist Robyn Eckersley offers up an approach that, despite being swathed in postmodern jargon, is readily transparent. The "ecocentric," transnational "green state" Eckersley envisions is represented as an explicit alternative to "the classical liberal state, the indiscriminate growth-dependent welfare state, and the increasingly ascendant neoliberal competition state." Achieving a post-liberal state requires rethinking the entire Enlightenment project: "By framing the problem as one of rescuing and reinterpreting the Enlightenment goals of autonomy and critique, it is possible to identify what might be called a mutually informing set of "liberal dogmas" that have for too long been the subject of unthinking faith rather than critical scrutiny by liberals. The most significant of these dogmas are a muscular individualism and an understanding of the self-interested rational actor as natural and eternal; a dualistic conception of humanity and nature that denies human dependency on the biological world and gives rise to the notion of human exceptionalism from, and instrumentalism and chauvinism toward, the natural world; the sanctity of private property rights; the notion that freedom can only be acquired through material plenitude; and overconfidence in the rational mastery of nature through further scientific and technological progress."

Every traditional liberal or "progressive" understanding is up for grabs in this framework. This passage does not require much "parsing" to grasp its practical implications-the establishment of institutions and governing regimes that are not answerable to popular will, or that depend on transforming popular will in a specified direction. Eckersley makes this clear in a passage about the "social learning" function of "deliberative democracy," which she describes as "the requirement that participants be open and flexible in their thinking, that they enter a public dialogue with a preparedness to have their preferences transformed through reasoned argument." (Emphasis added.) In practice, of course, Eckersley's "reasoned argument" would resemble nothing so much as the infamous "ideology struggle" sessions of Mao's Cultural Revolution. This outlook gives new meaning to the old cliché about rulers selecting the people, rather than vice versa.

Losers.  Actually, such people are worse than losers: they are aspiring tyrants.  Thanks goodness for the Second Amendment.

Byron York takes off from Edward Klein's new book to report that Rev. Jeremiah Wright has been advised to exercise his right to remain silent until 2013, when his long-time congregant in the White House will have a little more - as Lucianne puts it - "ah, flexibility":

Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose "God damn America" sermon set off a firestorm during the 2008 campaign, agreed not to publish an account of the episode until after President Obama's 2012 re-election campaign, according to an interview Wright conducted with the author of a new book on Obama. Wright said he made the decision at the urging of a friend and mentor, the prominent University of Chicago emeritus professor Martin Marty.

In the interview, Wright told Ed Klein, author of "The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House", that he keeps a cardboard box of documents and notes detailing his experiences beginning in March 2008, when the controversy over his sermons began. "It's a painful box to look at," Wright said.

Marty is both a former Lutheran pastor and professor emeritus of the University of Chicago Divinity School. I guess we can count his advice to Wright a little bit more of the divine intervention that has proved of such great assistance to Obama. Until Rev. Wright can tell the story after the election, we'll have to keep our thinking outside the box. Lucianne directs attention to the fitting musical commentary on the situation, words by lyricist Sheldon Harnick ("There is nothing unorthodox/About a little tin box...").

World to Germany: Drop Dead

Posted: 20 May 2012 06:33 AM PDT

(Steven Hayward)

We haven't had a lot to say about the European financial Gotterdammerung for a while because it's like watching a super-slow motion car wreck in a Michael Bay movie: the technical wizardry of the spectacle doesn't change the prosaic and predictable result at the end of the scene.  But there might be a surprise ending on the way-a nasty surprise in which the supposedly sturdy central bankers of Europe turn out to be shape-shifting Transformers of doom-not just for the economies of Europe, but perhaps some democracies as well.

Right now Greece is playing chicken with the rest of Europe, thinking that the fear of a crackup of the Euro will force the Europeans Germany to back down from the austerity measures imposed as a condition of bailing out Greek debt.  It is already evident that Greece is inclined to call what it sees as a bluff-that Europe will cave and bail out Greece in toto rather than see Greece exit the Euro and threaten a contagion that will rile global financial markets.  Greece is seen as the Lehman Brothers of Europe.  But if Greece is bailed out, then what lesson will Spain, Portugal, and Italy take from this?  If the profligate nations of Europe are going to clean up their act, they have to believe that the threat of being cut off from the Eurozone's banking system is real.  Beyond the mere act of defiance by a left-right coalition in Greece, there is always the prospect that unrest in Greece will cause its government to collapse completely.  It was not that long ago that Greece, like Turkey, alternated between weak democratic governments and rule by military coup.  I'm sure there are some retired Greek generals who still know the playbook.

So far the stolid Germans, with long memories of the hyperinflation of the 1920s and how it helped destroy democratic institutions, have been holding the line, which it can do because it holds the high cards as the dominant economic power in Europe.  But even before the election of France's new socialist president, Francois Hollande, France had been tacitly undermining the German position.  With Hollande, France's double game has come more fully into the open.  German Chancellor Angela Merkel's political position at home has been steadily eroding, as her party coalition continues to hemorrhage in provincial bi-elections.

Germany might be able to resist the French, but what happens when the United States throws in its lot with everyone against Germany?  That's the message of today's New York Times story of the dynamics of the G-8 summit currently under way: "World Leaders Urge Growth, Not Austerity."  Translation: Germany, back off and let us borrow and spend more money.  If you have any doubt, just check the lede:

CAMP DAVID, Md. - Leaders of the world's richest countries banded together on Saturday to press Germany to back more pro-growth policies to halt the deepening debt crisis in Europe, as President Obama for the first time gained widespread support for his argument that Europe, and the United States by extension, cannot afford Chancellor Angela Merkel's one-size-fits-all approach emphasizing austerity.

Of course, Obama's interest in this is clear: he cannot be re-elected if a European meltdown between now and November causes a new financial crisis here in the U.S.  I wish Merkel would say to Obama, "Say-all those American troops still based on Germany-why don't you bring them all home by the end of the summer?"

Victor Davis Hanson reminds us of how seriously shortsighted this German-bashing could be:

All over Europe, the gospel is that tight-fisted Germans are at the root of the European Union meltdown: They worked too hard, saved too much, bought too little, and borrowed not at all. All that may be true, in theory. But, in fact, faulting thrift and industry is a prescription for incurring anger and guaranteeing backlash - especially in the case of the Germans, who are now being asked to provide even more capital to help other European economies recover.

There is one general rule about the history of the modern state of Germany since its inception in 1871: Anytime Germany has been both unified and isolated, armed conflict has followed.

It would be the height of irony if the capstone of the architecture of post-war European unity-the Euro currency-turns out to be the instrument of a return to the 1,000-year pattern of European strife.

And of course, if Obama were really interested in growth, might we suggest his administration simply get out of the way?

Obamacare against the Church, cont'd

Posted: 20 May 2012 05:45 AM PDT

(Scott Johnson)

This past Friday we had another Obamacare against the Church moment, this one facilitated by Georgetown University. Georgetown invited HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to give the commencement address to graduating public policy students. Sebelius's commencement speech faithfully followed the traditional form. It was just boring and humorless enough to sound like she may have had a hand in writing it herself.

Politico easily extracted the theme from the complete text of the speech: the response of the Church to Obamacare's assault on Catholic institutions evokes JFK's famous 1960 Houston speech to the Protestant ministers:

When I was in junior high, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was running for president. I wasn't old enough to vote, but it was the first national campaign I really remember. Some of then-Senator Kennedy's opponents attacked him for his religion, suggesting that electing the first Catholic president would undermine the separation of church and state, a fundamental principle of our democracy. The furor grew so loud that Kennedy chose to deliver a speech about his beliefs just seven weeks before the election.

In that talk to Protestant ministers, Kennedy talked about his vision of religion and the public square, and said he believed in an America, and I quote, "where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials - and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against us all."

The text of JFK's speech is accessible online here. It continues:

For while this year it may be a Catholic against whom the finger of suspicion is pointed, in other years it has been, and may someday be again, a Jew - or a Quaker or a Unitarian or a Baptist.

It was Virginia's harassment of Baptist preachers, for example, that helped lead to Jefferson's statute of religious freedom.

Today I may be the victim, but tomorrow it may be you - until the whole fabric of our harmonious society is ripped at a time of great national peril.

Does Obamacare's "preventive services" mandate raise an issue of religious liberty for believing Catholics, or does the Church's response represent ecclesiastical authorities seeking to impose their will upon the general populace? Sebelius herself did not say, but she followed up her quotation from JFK with this observation:

Kennedy was elected president on November 8, 1960. And more than 50 years later, that conversation, about the intersection of our nation's long tradition of religious freedom with policy decisions that affect the general public, continues.

Contributing to these debates will require more than just the quantitative skills you have learned at Georgetown. It will also require the ethical skills you have honed - the ability to weigh different views, see issues from other points of view, and in the end, follow your own moral compass.

These debates can also be contentious. But this is a strength of our country, not a weakness. In some countries around the world, it is much easier to make policy. The leader delivers an edict and it goes into effect. There's no debate, no criticism, no second guessing.

Sebelius also did not say, but it is nevertheless true, that Obamacare is moving us decisively in the direction of the unnamed "other countries around the world." In the case of Obamacare's "preventive services" mandate, the leader has delivered an edict and it is going into effect, after the election. Wake up, sheeple!

Sebelius's appearance at Georgetown, under the auspices of an ostensibly Catholic institution, has not gone unnoticed by the Church or its faithful. As Politico noted, The Archdiocese of Washington said it was "shocking" that a Catholic institution would invite Sebelius to give a commencement address, and the conservative Cardinal Newman Society collected more than 27,000 signatures on a petition asking the university to withdraw its invitation.

Georgetown alum William Peter Blatty also made his voice heard. He plans to sue the school in church court, charging that his alma mater has strayed so far from church doctrine that it should no longer call itself Catholic. Nice Deb has more.

I can't believe I have to pass out Power Line's coveted Green Loser of the Week Award twice in one week, but the new World Wildlife Fund Living Planet 2012 report deserves a special bonus award this week.  This is the ninth edition of this report, produced every year by the WWF International (curious and telling that the U.S. WWF always keeps a discreet distance from this report) in conjunction with the Global Footprint Network, which is based in-where else?-sustainable San Francisco.  Beyond the soothing clichés of the report-"paradigm shift," "inclusive governance" (which means exactly the opposite), etc., the nub is given away with the phrase that we need to think "beyond GDP."  Translation: get ready to live poorer.

I think it was Alfred North Whitehead who said that the history of philosophy is just a series of footnotes to Plato, and likewise nearly all eco-doom reports such as this one are just footnotes to the Limits of Growth study of the 1970s (with maybe one exception-bonus if anyone can name it), and show once again how environmentalist thinking is stuck in the 1970s and will never grow out of their primal Malthusianism.  And so early in the report we read:

We are living as if we have an extra planet at our disposal. We are using 50 per cent more resources than the Earth can provide, and unless we change course that number will grow very fast - by 2030, even two planets will not be enough.

The report comes with the all the best faux-science, such as the chart below, which even has a "Confidence Limit," as though the model really is statistically accurate to the 95 percent level.

Oh, it has a "confidence" band, so it MUST be true.

But when you read a nonsense sentence like this-"We can meet all of our energy needs from sources like wind and sunlight that are clean and abundant"-you know you can stop reading further.  But I keep going, so that you don't have to.

I won't bore you with full details of the methodological flaws of this annual stunt.  The search for our ecological footprint is like the search for Bigfoot-frequently sighted, but never captured.  You can think of this as the Ecological Bigfoot.  The model essentially attempts to convert total human impact on the planet into a simple metric of land area.  This is a thought-provoking way of challenging our understanding of sustainability, but it is static, incomplete, and almost certainly wrong.  It does not allow for dynamic tradeoffs, such as, for example, the way the automobile reduced urban pollution from horses and conserved nearly 100 million acres of land in the U.S. in the early part of the 20th century.  The model is not helpful to policy makers, in part because large technological changes and new environmental tradeoffs occur less as a result of national policy than the serendipity and trends of the marketplace.

Moreover, in the older versions of this model the single largest variable was carbon dioxide emissions and the land area required to absorb our emissions.  If you remove or discount this variable (or discover that global warming is overestimated) then we aren't using too much land at all.  The assumed "unsustainability" goes poof, but so does your harum-scarum headlines.  Since fewer people are paying attention to greenhouse gases and the weary, used-up climate change banner, this year's Living Planet report shifts its focus to biodiversity instead.

It's another example of the intellectual fraudulence at the heart of the environmental advocacy community.

Losers.

Stratego

Posted: 19 May 2012 07:56 AM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

Stratego was one of the games of my youth. I was reminded of it by an InstaPundit link to a post titled "10 toy-based movies that would blow away Battleship." That post had TV ads for a number of games of decades past, including this Milton-Bradley ad for Stratego:

The video brought back happy memories of Stratego, a fun and not overly-complicated game. But it its odd: not only are the players in the ad not following the rules-bombs can't move-they also are playing stupidly. There is no point in advancing a scout one space at a time, and no one would attack blindly with his general without having his spy close at hand. Why do people make television commercials for a game without bothering to know the rules?

I saw something similar years ago in a glossy magazine ad that showed a well-dressed man and woman playing chess. I forget what was being advertised, but the scene was luxurious, some kind of library setting with a fire in the fireplace. Some advertiser and ad agency spent many thousands of dollars on the ad. Every detail of the couple's clothing and the room's fixtures was carefully plotted. Only the chess board was set up wrong: there was a black square in the lower right-hand corner rather than a white one, so everything was reversed. The white queen, for example, was on the player's right rather than his left. (If that sounds subtle, imagine an ad in which kids are playing baseball and the batter hits the ball and dashes toward third base. You could run clockwise around the bases, but you don't.)

The people who made the ad were obviously trying to achieve something by having the characters play chess. So wasn't there anyone involved in the production who actually knew how to play, or who at least thought to ask someone who did? Evidently not. Likewise with the Stratego ad. Still, Stratego is a fun game, and it is still around: you can buy it here and many other places.

Quotations from Chairman Jim, History Day edition

Posted: 19 May 2012 05:51 AM PDT

(Scott Johnson)

We've faithfully followed the pronouncements of the Obama administration's National Endowment for the Humanities Chairman Jim Leach in our Quotations From Chairman Jim series. Leach is the Joe Biden of the humanities. His sayings are lengthy, verbose, opaque, and pseudoliterate.

The NEH has posted two new Leach speeches. First is his introduction to a Holocaust film that NEH co-sponsored. According to Theodor Adorno, "to write a poem after Auschwitz is barbaric." The future not yet having occurred, as Leach himself might say, Adorno lacked access to Leach's effusions. Adorno might have reserved his judgment for Leach's speeches. The Holocaust film inspires Leach to comment:

All historical analysis is by definition retrospective. Within this parameter, one of the fundamental aspects of Holocaust era reviews is the imperative tie to questions of retroactive justice.

And that's not all! We also have this, as Leach looks back on hearings he presided over as a congressman:

In the stories of the victims and their persecutors we unearthed an axiom about the nature of evil: the genesis of evil may begin with perpetrators of violence and injustice, but complicity too frequently lies beyond the perpetrator in those who cloak themselves in the legitimacy of private business and genteel society while manipulating manifestly oppressive circumstances in furtherance of self-interest, oblivious even to crimes as searing as genocide.

It's axiomatic. Did somebody say oblivious? There is more:

Just as justice must be brought to those who commit atrocities, so the righteous who stand up to power and refuse to take advantage of the vulnerabilities of the oppressed demand attention. Retroactive honor is their due.

Leach also marked History Day with a speech: "Every day is History Day.". This speech is quotable almost in its entirety; it makes the task of selection particularly difficult. A few quotations, without further comment:

History Day's decentralized tentacles reach out to high schools and home schools across the land.

***

At our best we Americans reason pragmatically while many peoples reason more historically. When presented a judgmental quandary involving public policy or personal action, many on the planet first think of how other people in other times addressed analogous challenges. They rely on social experience as the principal guide to current action.

***

Mutual understanding requires both a sense of self and of the other.

***

To look presciently forward we need to look carefully back.

***

[I]t is research that teaches us to be cautious of assuming we can foretell where probing the unknown will lead.

***

St. Paul once suggested that we all look through a glass darkly. He was referencing the need to be cautious in interpreting Scripture. A similar lack of certitude should be applied to history. There can be certitude about certain historical facts but the whys and wherefores of events can be elusive.

Damn! I forgot again to preface these quotations with notice of the hazard. Warning: Reading this may kill brain cells.

Please-No One Tell Jerry Brown About This

Posted: 19 May 2012 03:46 AM PDT

(Steven Hayward)

The Wall Street Journal notes this morning in "California's Kafka Express" that Gov. Jerry Brown is determined to go ahead with building California's high-speed rail-to-nowhere despite that fact that it will cost at least $100 billion (he says only $68 billion, but can anyone point to a major rail project that has come in on budget?), when the state faces deficits and unpayable debt as far as the eye can see.

Well, let's hope that Governor "Moonbeam," whose 1980 presidential campaign put forward the theme "explore the universe," doesn't get wind of this story: "Engineer: Star Trek's Enterprise Ship Could Be Built in 20 Years at a Cost of $1 Trillion."  That's only a little less than the Obama Stimulus bill.  I can see the California bond measure for this now.  The ballot title and summary writes itself: "To boldly go where no bond has gone before."  The opposing argument also writes itself: "Throw away your money at warp speed!"

A good place to send Gov. Brown.

Conservative PACs outpacing Liberal ones

Posted: 18 May 2012 08:53 PM PDT

(Paul Mirengoff)

The Washington Post reports that conservative interest groups have "dumped" well over $20 million into congressional races so far this year, outspending their liberal opponents 4 to 1 (do lefty PACs dump money too, or do they distribute it?). Part of this phenomenon can be explained by the money attracted by high profile Republican Senate primary races. Reportedly, primary races in Indiana and Texas alone brought in around $4 million of conservative money each.

Even so, the Post detects "a growing panic among Democrats struggling to regain the House and hold on to their slim majority in the Senate." In response, says the Post, leading Democrats, including Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, have stepped up their fundraising efforts in recent months on behalf of liberal-leaning super PACs, which can raise unlimited money but have fallen far short of matching their conservative opponents.

My guess is that Democrats will be decidedly outspent in House races. Despite brave talk, there is little chance that the Dems can win back the House, and so money will be relatively hard to come by in the races that, in theory, might flip the House.

We've already seen the national Dems turn down requests for money with which to unseat Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker in a super high-profile contest, due to the inability of Walker's challenger to show well in polls. Desperate to hold the White House and cling to their Senate majority, the Democrats can't spend large sums on probable losers. Neither, presumably, will the liberal PACs.

This may bode badly as well for Senate candidates like Bob Kerrey in Nebraska and Joe Donnelly in Indiana. Both may have a shot of winning in their conservative states, but it is a fairly long shot. Expect the Dems and the liberal PACs to focus on holding seats in Virginia, Missouri, and Montana, and on helping Elizabeth Warren in the very Blue state of Massachusetts (assuming, as I do, that she won't be laughed out of it).

Overall the lesson for Democratic congressional candidates who need help may be this: the polls had better show that you don't need very much help.

Does Jeremiah Wright have a place in this campaign? Part Two

Posted: 18 May 2012 01:10 PM PDT

(Paul Mirengoff)

Yesterday, I opined that Jeremiah Wright should not be off-limits in the 2012 campaign unless research demonstrates that bringing up the Obama-Wright relationship will not hurt Obama. My suspicion is that Obama has some vulnerability here.

That suspicion is confirmed, I think, by the Obama campaign's shrill reaction, and that of its MSM friends, to reports that a PAC might inject Wright into the race (the PAC decided not to). Team Obama reacted by claiming that the Romney camp is playing the race card. As this headline in Politico puts it, "Race Issues Return With Rev. Jeremiah Wright."

Now, in context, the headline isn't entirely unfair. The particular consultant who wanted to bring up Wright apparently was going to do so in an ad that spoke of Obama's attempt to portray himself as a "metrosexual Black Abe Lincoln." How stupid can you get?

But there is nothing inherently racial about bringing up the fact that Rev. Wright served as Obama's spiritual adviser, while denouncing America, hating on Israel, and embracing Louis Farrakhan. Any candidate's (of any race) who was closely associated with any minister (of any race) who delivered hateful, anti-American sermons would be expeced to answer for it.

Sure Wright and Farrakhan are Black, but that doesn't give them a pass for their racism and anti-Americanism. By the same token, the fact that Obama is Black doesn't excuse him for selecting Wright as his spiritual leader. There were many other black clerics Obama could have looked to for guidance. He chose the Black liberationist who spews a message of hate.

If it wasn't racist for Obama eventually to disavow Wright, it isn't racist to hold him accountable for being so tight with Wright for so long.

Accordingly, I doubt that Team Obama and its friends in the MSM will get anywhere by hollering "racism" when the subject of Rev. Wright comes up, provided of course that the subject is raised intelligently. But my thesis can be tested through polling and focus groups. It should be, if this hasn't occurred already.

Naturally, the Obama campaign would rather play by the "rules" of 2008, under which Rev. Wright was off-limits - their man won that election. Team Romney should write its own rules.

Behind the Scenes at MSNBC

Posted: 18 May 2012 12:21 PM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

We wrote here about MSNBC's disgraceful attacks on Charles and David Koch and Koch Industries in connection with the Trayvon Martin shooting. Guest host Karen Finney said:

Who was the Typhoid Mary for this horrible outbreak? It's the usual suspects the Koch brothers...the same people who stymied gun regulation at every point who funded and ghost write these laws.

A few days later, Van Jones, a guest on MSNBC, said:

You've got all of the passion around Trayvon and what a horrible injustice that was and you can draw a direct line to the Koch brothers.

In fact, Koch has never had anything to do with gun laws, in Florida or anywhere else, except for a single occasion when the company lobbied against a proposal in Florida to legalize bringing guns to work. The claim that the brothers or their company had something to do with the Trayvon Martin case was simply insane.

So a colloquy between Koch and MSNBC followed. It culminated in MSNBC's invitation to have a representative come on the Martin Bashir show to discuss the incident. Koch's general counsel, Mark Holden, accepted the invitation and was on Bashir's program yesterday. There were some real fireworks, as Mark began by talking about MSNBC's false allegations, and later pointed out that such scurrilous attacks have led to numerous death threats against the Koch brothers:

Mark is a friend, so I called him to get his impressions of his foray into the lion's den. Here, paraphrased and sometimes quoted, is some of what he told me:

MSNBC's studios are at 30 Rockefeller Center, near the NBC News headquarters. We started out meeting with Phil Griffin, the President of MSNBC. He was very friendly; about the Trayvon Martin/Karen Finney controversy, he said "you're right, we were wrong." He stated that he wants to "move beyond bomb-throwing," and held up Rachel Maddow as his ideal of what he wants the network to be. [Ed.: His definition of "bomb-throwing" may be a bit different from ours.]

Everyone at MSNBC was friendly [Ed.: With the possible exception of Martin Bashir]. NBC's Director of Standards, to whom we have addressed our complaints about MSNBC's coverage, is Marian Porges. She is "great, a total pro."

The agreement we had with MSNBC was that I would be on for five to seven minutes and the interview would be about the network's linking of Koch to the Trayvon Martin shooting. That isn't what happened. I spoke briefly with Martin Bashir before we went on the air, and gave him a copy of Charles Koch's book. He asked whether I had testified in Congress about Iran. I was puzzled by that and told him that I hadn't. The interview lasted 15 minutes, and Bashir went on to a variety of topics, including some strange questions about Scott Walker.

Bashir denied that Karen Finney had linked us to the Martin shooting, which I think is clearly belied by her words. He then seemed to suggest that there was merit to the claim, since Koch participates in the American Legislative Exchange Council, some members of which have advocated "stand your ground" self-defense laws. I explained, as we have many times, that Koch has had nothing to do with this effort, and pointed out that the parent companies of MSNBC, Comcast and GE, are members of ALEC too, a fact which seemed to take him by surprise.

As you can see in the video, I tried to explain what Charles and David Koch do-they run a great company that employs 50,000 Americans in good, high-paying jobs. Their belief in free enterprise and limited government has been constant for 50 years, but has become controversial only recently.

After the interview was finished, we met briefly with Mr. Griffin for a second time. He expressed hope that we could continue to have a dialogue; I replied that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Later on, I did a shorter interview on the Sean Hannity show. As you can imagine, that was more relaxed. Sean was great, a total gentleman. Before we did the interview, we chatted and Sean said that he wasn't clear on what exactly Koch Industries does. I told him about the company, and as you can see from the video, he gave me an opportunity to talk about the company on-air.

Thanks to Mark for sharing his experience with our readers. I thought he acquitted himself well.

A word from Tom Lipscomb

Posted: 18 May 2012 11:41 AM PDT

(Scott Johnson)

ABC has reported the statement issued by Obama's literary agency on the "born in Kenya" deal. Our friend Tom Lipscomb has just posted a comment on his Facebook page. Given Tom's experience in the business, his views merit the consideration of interested observers. Here is Tom's comment in full:

IF YOU WANT A LITERARY AGENCY THAT WILL LIE FOR YOU OUTRAGEOUSLY TRY DYSTEL AND GOEDERICH

A limp statement was squirted out yesterday after the Breitbart item appeared that a woman who worked at the time as a low level assistant at Acton and Dystel, then Obama's agent (and is now the Goederich who is Dystel's partner) was now taking full responsibility for making an "error."

As someone who has run a number of top bestseller publishers, I think this is an amazing MIRACLE.

It is the ONLY case I have ever heard of in which an editorial assistant INVENTED a biographical detail. I have heard of typos, wrong dates, misspellings of names. But to pick a really weird country of origin like Kenya for an author?

NEVER.

After all where do the bios come from? We don't make them up. And neither did Dystel & Goederich. They come from the authors, like Obama. No one has ever invented a detail like that, and the authors usually review them and scream like hell if we get them wrong.

Can Dystel and Goedrich show us the correction appeal letter they got from Obama about the Kenya birth in over 10 years of using this bio? Or any other incident from any other publisher or agent that is similar to this "error?"

I really don't care where Obama was born. The continued degeneration of the press in passing on hilarious nonsense as fact is a lot more serious problem. Give Dystel & Goederich the Rose Mary Woods Memorial Award for the Most Absurd Lie to Protect a President of the Year.

The Weekly Winston: On Liberalism and Socialism

Posted: 18 May 2012 06:59 AM PDT

(Steven Hayward)

I'm about to be on a cross-country flight from LA to Washington, which means I'll be out of blogging range all day (unless the flight has WiFi-United is very slow in rolling this out).  So I might as well post my weekly Winston a day early.

So here's more from Churchill's famous speech of May 4, 1908 at Kinnaird Hall, Dundee, on the differences between liberalism (meaning classical and reform liberalism) and socialism (which is nearly indistinguishable today from what passes as liberalism, at least here in the U.S.) that I referenced here before:

And what is society?  I will tell you what society is.  Translated into concrete terms, Socialistic "society" is a set of disagreeable individuals who obtained a majority for their caucus at some recent election, and whose officials in consequence would look upon humanity through innumerable grills and pigeon-holes and across innumerable counters, and say to them, "Tickets, please."  Truly this grey old world has never seen so grim a joke.

Well, at least not until Obama and Obamacare came along.

Mitt Romney's Up-Side

Posted: 17 May 2012 02:52 PM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

Democrats have made much of President Obama's supposed advantage over Mitt Romney in "likability," as measured in various polls. My view has been that this edge is almost entirely illusory, because 1) telling a pollster that you like Obama personally is mostly a consolation prize after having expressed disapproval of his policies, and 2) most voters who don't obsessively follow the Republican primary process have only a vague idea of Romney, but as they see more of him, they will find him plenty likable enough.

This Gallup Poll isn't precisely on point because it measures overall "approval" as opposed to "likability," but it illustrates the same phenomenon. Note that Gallup has been testing Romney's approval rating since late 2006. It has shot up since he clinched the GOP presidential nomination:

Gallup says:

Fifty percent of Americans now have a favorable opinion of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, up from 39% in February and his highest by 10 percentage points. His current 41% unfavorable rating, though, leaves him with a net score of +9, after being at -8 in February.

Why the sudden jump?

Presidential candidates typically get a spike in their favorable ratings in the wake of winning the nomination. ... Republicans and independents are fueling the rise in Romney's favorable rating, with Democrats' views of him unchanged. Eighty-seven percent of Republicans now view him favorably, up from 65% in February. His favorable rating among independents is 11 points higher, and independents now view Romney more positively (48%) than negatively (43%).

So Republicans who may have favored another candidate didn't want to be fulsome in expressing their feelings about Romney to pollsters, but now that he is the nominee they are coming around. As for independents, Romney probably benefits both from being the nominee and from the fact that they are now starting to get a look at him. (It is easy to lose sight of the fact that an overwhelming majority of Americans do not spend their evenings watching presidential primary debates.)

Romney is ahead of Obama in net approval in this poll, +9 to +6. Here is where I think Romney has a lot of up-side: there are still a lot of independents who have seen little of him. Many of them won't really tune in until the fall. When they do form an impression of Romney, I think it is highly likely to be positive, as Romney comes across as reasonable, competent and likable. So I will be surprised if this comparison does not continue trending in his favor from now until the election.

No moment of silence to honor victims of Munich Olympics Massacre

Posted: 17 May 2012 02:14 PM PDT

(Paul Mirengoff)

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the massacre at the 1972 Olympic Games of 11 Israel athletes and coaches by Palestinian terrorists. As a reminder of this atrocity, the Israeli Olympic Committee asked that there be a moment of silence to honor the victims at the commencement of the Games.

The International Olympic Committee has refused to agree. The best IOC President Jacques Rogge could do was to promise to attend the Israeli delegation's traditional tribute to the victims. Rogge also told the Israels to "rest assured that, within the Olympic family, the memory of the victims of the terrible massacre in Munich in 1972 will never fade away."

This may or may not be true. But the important thing is that the massacre never fade from public memory. A public moment of silence promotes this goal; Rogge's attendance at a private ceremony does not. One suspects that that the International Olympic Committee would be pleased enough if the massacre at its Games were forgotten by the public.

In any event, a moment of silence does not seem like too much to ask. As Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said: "This rejection told us as Israelis that this tragedy is yours alone and not a tragedy within the family of nations." Just so.

One wonders, though, the extent to which the moment of silence would have been observed by those in attendance.

King Bibi?

Posted: 17 May 2012 11:24 AM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

Benjamin Netanyahu is on the cover of this week's Time magazine. The accompanying article, by the magazine's managing editor Richard Stengel, is titled "King Bibi." On the cover next to Netanyahu's photo are the words: "King Bibi. He's conquered Israel. But will Netanyahu now make peace-or war?"

The theme of the article is that Netanyahu has consolidated his power in Israel, giving him a golden opportunity to surrender to the Palestinians and leave Iran alone. Conditions in the Middle East are constantly changing, but our journalists' prescription for the area is fossilized and never changes: if only Israel would give a little more, peace would descend.

Here is this week's cover. The manner in which Netanyahu is depicted suggests that Stengel and his colleagues are not entirely confident that he will "make peace."

The article is not yet available online except to subscribers, but the Time staff describes it in a blog on the magazine's web site:

TIME's cover story this week, written by TIME managing editor Richard Stengel, profiles Israel's controversial Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. ...

Netanyahu, as Stengel writes, stands on history's cusp: "The question is whether he is a prisoner of that history or he can write a new narrative." He bears with him the memory of his military service-and the even more painful memory of the death of his elder brother Yoni, a celebrated Israeli commando. He also carries with him the legacy and learning of his father, the late Benzion Netanyahu, a noted, uncompromising Zionist academic.

Like his father, he sees Jewish history as a succession of holocausts. Like his father, he has an almost mystical belief in the abiding power of anti-Semitism, as though it were more biological than cultural.

Sounds like they think he is a "prisoner of...history." Where on earth could he get the idea that anti-Semitism is persistent?

That baggage hardly makes Netanyahu the most likely figure, then, to calmly address the two great geo-political questions confronting his nation: the threat of a nuclear Iran and the perennial challenge of forging a lasting peace with the Palestinians. Bibi has adopted a hawkish pose on the former that flies, sometimes, even in the face of the intelligence analyses of his own officials.

Actually, Netanyahu's position on Iran is the same as President Obama's: Iran under its present regime must not be permitted to become a nuclear power. The difference is that Netanyahu may mean it.

And, under his watch, the peace process has gone moribund - which compelled the Palestinians to break away from talks and take their cause to the floor of the United Nations General Assembly last year.

Got that? They were "compelled" to stop negotiating. By Netanyahu's intransigence, apparently; this was the position that has "compelled" them to refuse to talk to Israel for the last two years:

Netanyahu's proposal to the Palestinians is clear: an immediate renewal of peace talks at the highest level without preconditions "until results are reached and in which all core issues to the conflict are put on the table," including borders, settlements, refugees, Jerusalem, security arrangements and recognition of Israel's legitimacy.

Time's blog post finishes by quoting the cover story's conclusion:

He has

...a governing coalition that will not leak or collapse if he opens negotiations. He will no longer have to look over his shoulder. He will not have to call elections at the drop of a hat. He has not had that before, and it gives him room to maneuver and room to compromise. "Now he is the emperor ... he can do anything," [Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas] said last week. "If I were him, I would do it now, now, now."

Do what now? "Compromise," apparently. But Israel has compromised again and again, and it is the Palestinians who refuse even to talk.

The choice, writes Stengel, is Bibi's.

What choice? To withdraw from the West Bank as it did from Lebanon and Gaza? How did those gestures of good faith work out for Israel? For some reason, liberals seem to regard Palestinians as automatons. The choice is never theirs; their conduct, including incessant terrorist attacks, is somehow determined-"compelled"-by others. In reality, it is the Palestinians who need to make a choice: the choice to recognize Israel's right to exist, to abandon their dreams of driving out or killing the Jews, and to establish themselves as a normal country rather than a band of ersatz "refugees." When the Palestinians make the choice to lay down their arms, there will be peace; not before. And there is nothing "King Bibi" can do to change that reality.

Is there trouble ahead for NPR?

Posted: 17 May 2012 10:57 AM PDT

(Paul Mirengoff)

NPR is hurting financially. According to its new chief executive, Gary Knell, it has seen a sharp downturn in corporate "underwriting" and thus finds itself facing an annual operating deficit. Actually, NPR has operated at a deficit in three of the last four years. However, the hole is growing deeper this year.

In addition, NPR's audience is no longer expanding. In fact, ratings fell by a little more than 1 percent last, the first decline in a decade. The loss of listeners occurred even though the number of stations carrying NPR programs grew by about 2 percent.

Once every upscale white liberal in America with a radio is tuned in, growth becomes difficult for an operation as doctrinaire as NPR.

NPR has attempted to make inroads with African-Americans through programs specifically targeted at this group. But one of these shows, "News and Notes," has already been dropped in an attempt to save costs. Another such show, "Tell Me More," reportedly may suffer the same fate.

Apparently, as Walter Mondale might say, NPR wants to balance its budget on the backs of African-Americans.

Some in Congress would like to balance the budget. Thus, NPR must worry that Congress will cut, or even end, its funding. Sen. Jim DeMint is leading a drive to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funnels money from taxpayers to public radio and television stations. NPR gets about 2 percent of its funding directly from Congress, and its affiliate stations rely on federal money for about 15 percent of their budgets. These affiliates then pay fees to NPR that make up about 45 percent of NPR's budget.

Clearly, then, the defunding of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting would deal a blow to NPR at a time when it can ill-afford the setback.

Conservatives have been trying to end federal funding of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for years, to no avail. But given our national fiscal crises, and depending on how the election goes this fall, defunding may not be out of the question.

Food for thought

Elizabeth Warren cannot document her claim to be part (a very small part) Cherokee Indian. But in 1984, identifying herself as a Cherokee, she contributed recipes to a cookbook edited by her cousin called "Pow Wow Chow." If that helps.

It may not. According to the Boston Herald, outraged members of the Cherokee tribe - including a Warren supporter - are demanding that the candidate release her employment records following reports that she has no documentation to prove her Native American ancestry. As for the cookbook, a Cherokee genealogist dismissed it as "silly." "Cherokees don't even traditionally have powwows," she said.

"The public cannot be too curious concerning the characters of public men." --Samuel Adams

Government & Politics

The Wright Stuff

Obama with longtime pastor Jeremiah Wright

As our Founding Fathers acknowledged, character is of the utmost importance in choosing leaders for our constitutional republic. George Washington called good moral character the "first essential in a man." Likewise, Samuel Adams said "nothing is more essential," and Thomas Jefferson warned that a "degeneracy" of public character is a "canker" that could destroy a republic. In short, questions of character are important, particularly come election time.

Questions of character, however, are different from assassinations of character. Leftists are quite adept at the latter; hence Barack Obama's campaign attacks on Mitt Romney's record at Bain Capital. A new ad declares, "In a career of buying and selling companies, Romney's pattern was to reap quick profits for himself and his investors at the expense of workers and communities. Sometimes it meant sending American jobs overseas. Other times, it meant cutting wages and benefits. In Romney's economic philosophy, CEOs and wealthy investors prosper by any means necessary, even when it meant companies failed and workers were left behind. Romney believes in two sets of rules -- one for people like him, another for everyone else."

Mitt Romney can defend his own record. Capitalism can at times be messy, and a vibrant free market economy is rife with both winners and losers. Humans are also fallible. Managers make mistakes, and good workers are sometimes hurt through no fault of their own. Indeed, there are times when cuts must be made to ensure the viability of an enterprise (ahem, the federal budget). Yet Obama's line of attack suggests that Romney is heartless and greedy, and that capitalism itself is evil. He also conveniently leaves out the numerous companies and jobs that Bain Capital saved -- far more than the administration's ridiculous "saved or created" refrain. Without irony, Joe Biden slammed Romney for leaving taxpayers with the "hidden price" of bad investments despite the administration's own record of failed green energy "investments," such as Solyndra, which have lost myriad jobs and cost taxpayers billions of dollars.

To his credit, Romney fired back with an ad featuring some of those workers who still have jobs thanks to capitalism. His stump speeches now also feature a running debt clock to highlight Obama's failed fiscal path.

On the other hand, Romney is refusing to countenance any ads that link Obama to his long-time pastor, Jeremiah Wright. Romney's strategy is politically savvy, as he aims to keep the focus on the economy and not Obama's past associations. Romney's reaction wasn't strong enough for the Obama camp, however, which criticized him for not living up to the standard of John McCain. We're going to go out on a limb and say that McCain's losing strategy is not one Romney should emulate. But character matters, and we won't shy away from noting that Obama sat silently in a pew for 20 years while Wright delivered his racist and virulently anti-American rants. In effect, Obama was a disciple of hate.

Wright himself recently claimed that an Obama ally offered him $150,000 in 2008 to stay quiet until after the election. Wright also says Obama personally asked him to do the same, albeit without the offer of cash. According to Wright, Obama said, "Do you know what your problem is? You have to tell the truth." If that's true, then Obama was not only well aware of what Wright shouted from the pulpit, notwithstanding his assertions to the contrary, but he also considers Wright's worldview an accurate reflection of the truth. Wouldn't that be a question of character?

None of this is to say that the election will hinge on Jeremiah Wright, or Obama's other questionable associations, for that matter. If that issue were that important to voters, Obama would have lost in 2008. This election is a referendum on Obama's record. Still, some of us understand that much of the foundation for his record -- "social justice" and wealth redistribution, for example -- was laid while he sat under Wright's teaching. And as our Teacher said, "The truth will set you free."

How important is character in selecting leaders?

Profiles in Narcissism

Barack Obama edited the official White House website biographies of previous presidents going all the way back to Calvin Coolidge to add bullet-point facts about himself. For example, "On Feb. 22, 1924 Calvin Coolidge became the first president to make a public radio address to the American people. ... President Obama became the first president to hold virtual gatherings and town halls using Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, etc." With a fine president such as Coolidge, that's where the similarities end.

Most egregious, perhaps, is the graffiti that Team Obama sprayed on Ronald Reagan's bio, which falsely implies that the great man was, like Obama, a class warrior: "In a June 28, 1985 speech Reagan called for a fairer tax code, one where a multi-millionaire did not have a lower tax rate than his secretary. Today, President Obama is calling for the same with the Buffett Rule." As we have noted before, this is a major distortion as Reagan was making speeches calling for lower tax rates for everyone, not punitive rates for a few.

As the Heritage Foundation's Rory Cooper, who discovered the edits, put it, "Any person selected to the highest office in the land is bound to indulge a small degree of narcissism. But when it permeates the entire attitude and culture of the executive branch, it begins to become a problem. No president is larger than the presidency." Obama thinks he's the exception.

As for Obama's own biography, Breitbart News "obtained a promotional booklet produced in 1991 by Barack Obama's then-literary agency, Acton & Dystel, which touts Obama as 'born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii.'" The editor responsible calls it a "fact-checking error," and it adds fuel to the fire of questions about Obama's past. However, as we have said before, we -- and Breitbart News -- remain convinced that he was born in Hawaii just as his birth certificate says.

Campaign Trail: The Ron Paul Revolution Shifts Gears

Ron Paul has announced that he won't actively campaign in the 11 remaining Republican presidential primaries, conceding that his team doesn't have the funds or the support to carry the day in any of the contests. It's worth noting, however, that Paul didn't suspend his campaign and that he intends to maintain a presence at state conventions where his supporters can continue to woo delegates into supporting him at the Republican National Convention in Tampa later this summer. Paul's campaign has been remarkably adept at canvassing national convention delegates from various states, and it now appears that his strategy is to lock up enough delegates to influence the structure of the Republican platform for the general election.

Hope 'n' Change: More Unwelcome ObamaCare Changes

Thanks to a provision of ObamaCare enforced by the Department of Health and Human Services, insurance companies are effectively being turned into surrogates for the Obama re-election campaign. ObamaCare originally mandated that insurers must either spend a certain amount of their revenue on actual medical care or return it to customers in the form of rebates. Now HHS is compelling insurers to send a notice to customers along with the rebate that states: "This letter is to inform you that you will receive a rebate of a portion of your health insurance premiums. This rebate is required by the Affordable Care Act -- the health reform law." Insurance companies initially went along with ObamaCare because they believed it would provide them a larger pool of customers. We wonder if they feel the same way now that their revenue stream and their relationship with customers is directed by the federal government.

In other ObamaCare news, HHS awarded a $5.9 million grant to the Urban Health Initiative (UHI) at the University of Chicago Medical Center last week. UHI was one of only 26 grant recipients out of a pool of 3,000 applicants. Does that make UHI lucky? Hardly. UHI is run by Eric Whitaker, a frequent golf partner and longtime friend of Barack Obama. The initiative itself began as an offshoot of a program run by Michelle Obama before she left her as-yet unfilled $317,000-per-year post at the University of Chicago to become first lady. In addition, senior Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett was Chairman of the University of Chicago Medical Center Board of Trustees before leaving to serve the White House. Even top Obama political flak David Axelrod has a history with UHI, having aided them in their public relations strategy in 2007. HHS maintains that the grant was awarded after an objective review, and the Leftmedia likewise ignored the obvious impropriety.

Finally, though friends of Obama seem to benefit from ObamaCare, Franciscan University, a Catholic college in Ohio, became the bloated law's latest victim. The university announced that it would drop its student health insurance program, citing ObamaCare's mandate that all insurers offer reproductive health services such as abortion and sterilization. Franciscan University was one of the original opponents of the reproductive health provision before it went into effect, citing its blatant disregard for religious liberty. This proves once again that Obama's claim, "If you like your health care coverage you can keep it," was utterly misleading.

News from the Swamp: The Next Budget Battle

Washington's steadfast refusal to address the government's debt crisis seriously and revisit the tax code appears headed to yet another 11th-hour showdown later this year. House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) stated this week that any proposal to raise the debt ceiling must include corresponding spending cuts and entitlement reform. This is the same position he held the last time the debt ceiling was reached, and, as they did last time, Democrats have resorted to political demagoguery devoid of both courage and solutions. Barack Obama warned Republicans that he would not tolerate another bitter fight. He called for "a serious bipartisan approach," which isn't possible as long as he is involved.

This time around the fight is even more complicated because of a devastating array of tax hikes that are set to hit on Jan. 1, 2013. Taxmageddon, as the looming crisis is now called, will include an end to the Bush tax cuts for all taxpayers, a rise in the capital gains and dividends rates, an end to the Alternative Minimum Tax fix, and a 50 percent reduction in the child tax credit. Unless these provisions are extended or the tax code is fundamentally changed, the economy will suffer a $500 billion hit that will likely wipe out any economic gains that have been made and plunge the U.S. back into a recession.

Boehner pledged to do something about the problem, but Congress doesn't have a reputation for thinking ahead. In a particularly divisive election year, there will be few courageous members of Congress willing to stick their necks out for what is sure to be a bitter partisan battle. Many political strategists calculate that action won't take place until after the election, leaving the country's fiscal future to be determined during a six-week lame duck session.

In related budget news, Obama's budget proposal suffered its third straight defeat in a year after Republicans forced a vote on it in the Senate this week. What's startling is not that Obama has lost three votes in a row in the last year; it's that he hasn't garnered a single vote of support from either Republicans or Democrats. The Senate defeated his 2011 budget 97-0, while in March the House defeated his latest proposal 414-0. This time, the Senate vote was 99-0. The White House claims it has a balanced approach of tax increases to offset higher spending, while adding $6.4 trillion to the deficit in the next 10 years. GOP budget proposals produce deficits of less than half that over the same time frame. Meanwhile, it's been more than three years since Senate Democrats have even submitted a budget.

Around the Nation: California's Sprawling Deficit

In January, those who crunch the numbers deemed that California's expenses would run $9.2 billion over revenues for the next fiscal year. That's a pretty staggering figure for a state budget, but because revenues haven't materialized as expected and court orders are blocking some needed cuts, Gov. Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown is now staring at a $15.7 billion hole.

Warning that "schools will suffer" if nothing is done -- it's always about the children, isn't it? -- Brown proposes that voters approve a two-pronged revenue "enhancement" measure in November. On the ballot is a proposal to soak wealthy taxpayers with an income tax surcharge and to raise the sales tax "temporarily" from 7.25 percent to 7.5 percent. Once the sales tax is raised, however, it will never be lowered, at least not as long as Democrats are in charge. If the measure passes, Brown plans to increase school spending by 16 percent over last year.

The real problem, though, goes far beyond the deficit. Those who can afford to are leaving the state in droves and taking their capital and investment with them, only to be replaced by illegal aliens and others who become a net drain on the system and continue to demand even more government goodies. Obviously, raising taxes on the remaining wealthy only encourages them to move elsewhere, which means the expected revenue from those tax increases won't materialize. Lather, rinse, repeat.

While California plans its own demise, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma are either working to cut taxes, or they have already done so. Florida, New Hampshire and Tennessee are able to balance their budgets with no income tax at all. Maybe instead of the same failed policies, California could take a hint.

Economy

Income Redistribution: If at First You Don't Succeed...

As economists weigh in with a mixed outlook on the nation's economy this year, Barack Obama continues to advocate the same approach that hasn't produced results. His latest priming of the pump, designed to drive unemployment below 8 percent -- which conventional wisdom holds will improve one's chances of being re-elected -- features a grab bag of goodies to ensnare the maximum number of voters in a government trap: additional help for homeowners to refinance their mortgages, tax breaks for small businesses that hire workers, job assistance for veterans, and tax credits for clean energy companies. All told, the spending would amount to an additional $34.7 billion of "stimulus" -- money we don't have for a plan that won't work.

While conventional economists seem to think another economic downturn is unlikely, predicted slow employment growth won't make much of a dent in the unemployment rate. Besides, Europe's economic woes could jump the Pond and slam the American economy. Somehow, though, the same people who are always surprised by "unexpected" bad economic news aren't seeing the situation on the ground. Those who have seen the unfolding events of the last three-plus years aren't expecting the miracle Obama wishes for with his new spending.

What do you think of Obama's new "stimulus" plan?

This Week's 'Braying Jackass' Award

"Things really are starting to come back. There are signs of life and hope in the Heartland. Jobs are starting to come back." --Joe Biden, bragging on the Obama economic "recovery"

On the contrary, James Pethokoukis of the American Enterprise Institute has three charts that show "the U.S. economy is struggling through an abysmal recovery not really worth the name." That includes lackluster GDP growth, falling real wages and a shrinking labor force. In other words, things really aren't starting to come back.

Regulatory Commissars: Big Loss Means More Government

"In the wake of losses at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., the White House is seeking to ensure a tough interpretation of a regulation designed to prevent banks from making bets with their own money," reports The Wall Street Journal. After news broke that J. P. Morgan Chase lost $2 billion in a trading blunder, the company's stock plummeted, and the Obama administration immediately leveraged the incident to call for a clamp down on regulations not yet put in place from the infamous Dodd-Frank financial regulation overhaul of 2010. The Left's answer in all such situations is more government, despite the failure of a massive infrastructure of regulations to stop this loss in the first place.

In fact, those responsible for the loss at J.P. Morgan lost their jobs, something that tends to happen in the private sector. On the other hand, as Cato Institute's Mark Calabria challenges, "Show me the list of regulators who lost their jobs, despite the massive regulatory failures that occurred before and during the [2008 financial] crisis."

There's Oil in Them Thar Hills

With gas prices soaring and tall tales of energy independence spinning from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, one might think the discovery of massive oil reserves on U.S. soil would make the news. Sadly, one would be wrong. Instead, last week's announcement by the Government Accountability Office that "the world's largest deposits of oil shale" are sitting underneath Colorado, Utah and Wyoming went almost entirely unreported.

Testifying before the House Science Subcommittee on Energy and Environment, Anu K. Mittal, the GAO's director of natural resources and environment, noted, "The Rand Corporation, a nonprofit research organization, estimates that 30 to 60 percent of the oil shale in the Green River Formation can be recovered. At the midpoint of this estimate, almost half of the 3 trillion barrels of oil would be recoverable. This is an amount about equal to the entire world's proven oil reserves." In other words, we have met energy independence, and it is us.

While the American people want energy independence, the White House is devising schemes to keep the oil untouchable. The supply lies mostly on federal land, and just this month, the Obama administration proposed new regulations governing hydraulic fracturing ("fracking"), the method that would likely be used to extract the oil from the Green River Formation. So the good news is that we have a path to greater domestic oil production and energy independence. The bad news is that we have a president dead-set on ensuring that oil never sees the light of day and a media more than happy to cover for him.

Security

U.S. Sovereignty Could Be LOST

Three decades after President Ronald Reagan put the kibosh on a treaty that surrendered U.S. sovereignty to a law enforcement body chosen by the United Nations, the Obama regime and its leftist followers in Congress appear ready to try to ratify the same treaty before Obama is possibly sent packing in November. The Law Of the Sea Treaty (LOST) is allegedly an attempt to protect the world's oceans, which constitute 70 percent of the Earth's surface, from environmental damage, as well as to lessen the oceans' potential as a source of conflict between nations. In reality, however, LOST is nothing more than an attempt at the global redistribution of power and wealth, especially America's and Europe's, via a UN body called the International Seabed Authority, which would be headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica.

The ISA would have the power to regulate the entire world's oceans, including economic activities such as seabed mining, fishing and ocean petroleum exploration. Military activities would also fall under its jurisdiction, with ISA having the authority to tell the U.S. Navy where it could and could not sail. Freedom of the seas has been guaranteed by the U.S. Navy, but under LOST it would be the ISA, whose members would be chosen by the same organization that put such exemplary human rights defenders as Cuba, China and Saudi Arabia on the UN Human Rights Council. Such nations no doubt would soon be on the ISA. LOST even imposes a global tax (a.k.a. "protection") that would be paid directly to ISA by companies seeking to exploit the ocean's resources. LOST is thus a Marxist's dream come true.

While LOST's prospects for ratification seemed dim, the Congressional Quarterly says that "hopes for ratification have been revived." LOST is championed by former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MI), who opposed it while in Congress but is now lobbying for corporate and environmental interests that favor it. Additionally, soon-to-be-former Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) also backs the treaty, increasing the odds that the Obama regime could cram this treaty past the Senate before November. In the name of U.S. sovereignty and freedom of the seas, LOST must be sent back to Davy Jones' locker, just as the Gipper did 30 years ago.

Judicial Benchmarks: Judge Blocks Military Detention Law

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest blocked a provision of the National Defense Authorization Act that allows indefinite military detention for those aiding terrorism. According to Bloomberg, "The complaint was filed Jan. 13 by a group including former New York Times reporter Christopher Hedges. The plaintiffs contend a section of the law allows for detention of citizens and permanent residents taken into custody in the U.S. on 'suspicion of providing substantial support' to people engaged in hostilities against the U.S., such as al-Qaeda." Forrest criticized the "vagueness of Section 1021" and worried that the public could have their "speech chilled" by the law. Her order prevents enforcement pending further review or congressional amendment. Her decision is also likely to be overturned.

Armed Forces Day

Tomorrow is Armed Forces Day. We remain the proud and the free because these Patriots -- American Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coastguardsmen -- have stood bravely in harm's way and remain on post today. For this, we, the American people, offer our heartfelt thanks and prayers for you and your families.

Immigration Front: Fingerprinting Politics

New York City and 30 other New York jurisdictions have just entered the Secure Communities program, which aims to identify and deport illegal immigrants convicted of crimes. Fingerprints of suspects in custody are already sent to the FBI, but under the program, those fingerprints are also shared with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Critics say it has resulted in the deportation of thousands of people accused of crimes but not convicted, and that it erodes the trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement. But Secure Communities has helped ICE remove more than 135,000 convicted criminal aliens, including more than 49,000 convicted of major violent offenses such as murder, rape and the sexual abuse of children. With that success record, why are the likes of New York's Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, while reluctantly complying, objecting to the program?

The answer, of course, is politics. Hispanics are a growing force in New York politics, and there are concentrations of other immigrant communities, such as the Haitian community in Brooklyn, that influence the outcome of elections. Cuomo wants support for his legislative program from legislators representing various ethnic and immigrant communities. Quinn is the presumptive Democrat candidate for mayor in next year's New York City mayoral election, thus, given registration numbers, making her the odds-on favorite. Meanwhile, the city's GOP is trying to get the popular Kelly to run as its mayoral candidate. Given the choice of votes or increased security for the city's residents, it seems the expedient thing is to go for the votes.

New Reports on Zimmerman/Martin Incident

When news broke that neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman had shot Trayvon Martin, and the race-bait political hustlers took charge, we cautioned that the facts should be allowed to play out before people jumped to conclusions. Two major facts are out this week: Zimmerman's medical report and Martin's autopsy. Both strongly indicate that, contrary to the racist outrage on the Left, Zimmerman was telling the truth about the altercation that led to Martin's death.

Zimmerman was examined immediately following the incident, and he had a broken nose, two black eyes, two lacerations on the back of his head and a minor back injury. The back of his shirt was also wet and grass-stained. Meanwhile, Martin's autopsy revealed that his only injury -- outside the fatal gunshot wound -- was bloodied knuckles, and that he had drugs in his system, just as Zimmerman suspected and told the 911 dispatcher. Martin's shirt also had gunshot residue, indicating that the two were at extremely close range when he was shot. Zimmerman has claimed self-defense all along, and these facts back him up. No wonder the Leftmedia has lost interest in the case.

Climate Change This Week: Second Planet Needed

The 2012 Living Planet Report, produced by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Zoological Society of London, the Global Footprint Network and the European Space Agency, is just like every other report to come from the ecofascist left -- it paints a bleak picture of our planet's future. According to Jim Leape, Director General of WWF International, "We're all familiar with the stories of what we're doing to Planet Earth, the ways in which we're changing the climate, depleting the world's fisheries, destroying the world's forests. ... The report tells us that we're already using the earth's resources 50 percent faster than it can be replenished, and that, if we don't change our ways, by 2030 we will need two planets to support us." How about this planet for us, and the other planet for the scaremongers?

On a related note, one way that our friends in Great Britain are contributing to the destruction of the planet is by pouring too much milk down the drain. No kidding. A study by the University of Edinburgh claims "the 360,000 tonnes of milk wasted in the UK each year creates greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 100,000 tonnes of CO2." Like momma always said, drink your milk!

Village Academic Curriculum: The Secret Is Out

Third-graders in New Jersey schools will no longer have to worry about baring their souls as part of a standardized test. As part of the "dry run" of a proposed question for the state's standardized assessment test, students in selected schools were asked to write an "essay" about a secret they were having trouble keeping. Obviously, such a question could expose administrators and those who grade the tests to liability issues. One parent was appalled to learn that his nine-year-old revealed he had missed school for a family ski trip. Had parents not spoken up and complained, the question likely would have been included on future exams.

Academic culture already features police officers on daily patrol in many schools, overzealous cafeteria workers inspecting school lunches, and the newest craze of categorizing any negative language directed toward certain kids as "bullying." The message that it's acceptable to reveal your darkest secrets to Big Brother is just a further indicator that schools are no longer meant for learning but for indoctrination. Parents must remain vigilant.

And Last...

Back in 2010, the Pentagon decided that it was overrun with so many studies that it did what any good bureaucracy would do: According to ABC News, "[I]t commissioned a study to determine how much it cost to produce all those studies." A study of studies -- yep, your government at work. It didn't stop there, though, because the Pentagon is still working on its report. The Government Accountability Office decided to step in and hold the Pentagon accountable ... by conducting a study of the study that studied studies. The GAO found that DoD's "approach is not fully consistent with relevant cost estimating best practices and cost accounting standards," and the Pentagon "partially concurs." We still think Congress may need to commission a committee to study the study of the study that studied studies to determine if further study is required.

COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 172 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS

Wright Or Wrong?

The left-wing media and the Obama campaign were on the attack yesterday after a front page New York Times story alleging that a conservative billionaire was planning to reintroduce America to Rev. Jeremiah Wright. By mid-morning Mitt Romney himself had repudiated the plan. There is just one problem -- the story is wrong.

Joe Ricketts, the founder and former CEO of TD Ameritrade, currently leads an economically conservative group called "Ending Spending," which had contracted with a political consulting firm to develop an ad campaign. The Jeremiah Wright plan was one of several submitted, but it clearly did not fit the group's economic focus. Even though the Times acknowledged in its report that the plan was "one of several being studied by Mr. Ricketts," it nevertheless chose to concentrate more than 1,100 words on just this one plan.

Predictably, the Obama campaign and its media allies screamed "racism." CNN's Roland Martin said that bringing up Wright puts "Mormonism on the table." But this isn't about theology.

It's about the racially obsessed, anti-American world-view of Wright's church -- a world-view that attracted Barack Obama and held his attention for 20 years. He had his children baptized there. It just isn't believable for Obama to suggest, and for the media to accept, that he had no idea what Wright espoused.

Why did Obama's friends allegedly try to bribe Wright to keep him quiet in 2008? Because they knew his views were radioactive and dangerous to Obama's chances. That's why Obama left the church -- but only AFTER Wright was partially exposed. And that supposedly ended the issue. Case-closed, nothing to see here. Sorry, I don't think so.

Would it be news if Mitt Romney attended a church for 20 years that was led by a pastor who espoused views similar to those of David Duke? Of course it would. Commenting on the media's outrageous double standard, Charles Krauthammer noted that the left doesn't want to talk about the adult Obama's 20-year relationship with his radical pastor, but the Washington Post thinks Mitt Romney's teen-age pranks are "need-to-know" information.

I'd like to get your feedback. Are conservatives right to bring up Jeremiah Wright? Or do you think it amounts to "character assassination?" Click here to take part in our online poll.

President Obama's Unemployment Rate Is Stuck At 11%

This column by ACRU General Counsel and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy (CCPP) Peter Ferrara was published May 17, 2012 on Forbes.com.

This latest recession started in December, 2007. Since the Great Depression 75 years ago, recessions in America have lasted an average of 10 months, with the longest previously lasting 16 months, not counting this latest spooky downturn.

The National Bureau of Economic Research, the recognized scorekeeper of when recessions start and end, declared this latest recession over in June, 2009, which would make it the longest recession since the Great Depression. But the historical precedent in America is the deeper the recession the stronger the recovery, as the American economy accelerates to return to its long term trendline. Based on that precedent, we should be in the third year of a raging recovery boom by now. But instead we have suffered the worst economic recovery from a recession since the Great Depression.

Unemployment actually rose after June, 2009, and did not fall back down below that level until 18 months later in December, 2010. Instead of a recovery,America has suffered the longest period of unemployment above 8% since the Great Depression, under President Obama's public policy malpractice. Even last month, 52 months after the recession started, while supposedly 115,000 new jobs were created, the labor force shrank by another 342,000 workers, which is the only reason the unemployment rate reportedly declined from 8.2% to 8.1%. Without the decline in the labor force, unemployment would have risen last month to 8.3%.

Fast and Furious: Why Eric Holder Will Lose the Legal Fight

This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published May 17, 2012 on Breitbart.com.

Federal courts could soon decide a fight between Congress and Attorney General Eric Holder on the Operation Fast and Furious gun-running scandal. If Republicans persevere, this is a battle that Holder should lose in what would be a humiliating defeat for President Barack Obama.

Most Americans have now heard that our government allowed drug cartels to illegally smuggle thousands of guns from the U.S. into Mexico. The National Rifle Association has relentlessly pursued the White House and Department of Justice (DOJ) about Fast and Furious for over a year, and the massive gun-rights organization has only increased its focus in recent months.

But in addition to decrying the gun-smuggling activity, the NRA has been pushing for information regarding who knew what in the administration, and any related political objectives being pursued by Team Obama.

Pyrrhic Victory for the ACLU in Texas?

This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published May 17, 2012 on the American Spectator website.

In Lewisville, Texas, there will be a benediction and invocation at the graduation ceremony on June 3rd this year, but thanks to the ACLU, the program will call them something else.

"Our attorneys have made it clear that we can continue to have student-led prayer, but we will call it 'student remarks,'" Kevin Rogers, chief operating officer of the Lewisville Independent School District, told the Dallas Morning News.

Thus, the ACLU of Texas won a pyrrhic battle in its ongoing campaign to wipe out any references to God in public school ceremonies.

"If the kids want to pray -- those who are participating and speaking at the graduation because they earned the right to do that in some way, either being the valedictorian, or student class president, or whatever the school prescribes -- then those kids can pray, if they so choose," Hiram Sasser, an attorney for the Texas-based Liberty Institute, told OneNewsNow. "And no government official can stop them."

Different Rules for D.C.?

This column by ACRU Chairman and CEO and CCPP Founder and President Susan A. Carleson was published May 16, 2012 on the American Thinker website.

Just in case anyone needs any more surprises, liberal hypocrisy has again been unearthed in -- of all places -- Washington, D.C.!

Last August, the Army Corps of Engineers denied the District of Columbia a permit as part of a $1.5-billion Southwest Waterfront redevelopment project to begin constructing high-rise, luxury townhouses, a yacht club, and other buildings on piers in and on the Washington Channel -- a congressionally designated navigable water of the United States.

The Corps stated that under existing law, including the Clean Water Act (CWA), it was required "to regulate construction activities and discharges of dredged and/or fill material in navigable waters."

Based on its CWA concerns and adverse impact on marine navigation, the Corps stated that "[a]t this time, the Corps does not have the administrative authority to approve the project as proposed without specific Congressional action to dissolve the federal interest."

Obama Uses Time-Noculars To Look At His Second Term

Standing on the roof of the White House and squinting through time-bending binoculars recently recovered at Area 51, US President Barack Obama reeled off an unexpectedly frank, contempt-laden indictment of his second term.

Obama became the first human to test the device named "Time-Noculars," which is capable of showing reality four years ahead of time - and he wasn't pleased with what he saw.

The racially divided remnant of the Obama's second term was, in Obama's eyes, nothing but a nation which cannot be "productive", "doesn't work", and even its vaunted Chevy Volt exports were hardly state of the art.

"It is like you are in a time warp," Obama said Sunday, after he observed police barricades in the demilitarized buffer zone that has split Washington and the rest of the nation since the Great Race Riots of 2012 that helped propel him into his second term in office. "There are certain things that just don't work and what we are doing doesn't work."

"It is like you are looking into a country that has missed 50 years of racial progress," Obama marveled later, after visiting a clean, heated presidential bathroom that still had running water and - a gift from the recent past - working plumbing.

"If a country can't feed or defend itself effectively, if it can't make anything of any use to anybody, if it has no exports other than cheap, unskilled labor looking for work in Mexico, if it can't rein in corruption in the highest offices, then you'd think you'd want to try something different," Obama said in an uncharacteristically honest public statement.

According to the DOD official in charge of the "Time-Noculars," the President's unusual behavior can be explained by the "truth serum" effect of time-bending. "Being able to see own future sends strong signals to one's brain, zapping and incapacitating areas involved in lying, demagogy, and political grand-standing," the DOD official said.

Dear Leader Set to Autograph Sky!

R.O.C.K. in the USSA
5/20/2012, 2:43 pm

omrades! In an amazing display of His control of the universe, Dear Leader will autograph the sky this afternoon as He produces an annular eclipse!

eclipse.JPG

The autograph will be visible as a HUUUUUUGE "O", as the moon passes in front of the sun, and it will be visible in most of the United states, at least partially. The best viewing is in the southern states, which, as we know, have the highest percentages of bitter clingers to their guns and god. Do you think that THAT is a coincidence? Hmmm?

Be careful not to look directly at the sun during this 2012 Campaign Event, because Dear Leader's glory is such that, in this case, you could be blinded. But apparently this kind of eclipse causes strange, circular shadows when the light passes through leaves on trees, or criss-crossed fingers - Dear Leader is leaving NOTHING to the imagination on this one! It will be dramatically clear as never before that He is, indeed, the One!!
