Obama Admin: The War On Terror Is 'Over'
Today, the National Journal reported that a senior State Department official has announced, "The war on terror is over."
"Now that we have killed most of al Qaida," the source said, "now that people have come to see legitimate means of expression, people who once might have gone into al Qaida see an opportunity for a legitimate Islamism."
The article itself describes the Obama administration's new vision of foreign policy, which admits no enemies. Everyone, in this view, is a friend. Islamism, says the Obama administration, is just fine, so long as it does not openly support terrorism.
This, of course, is utter foolishness. Islamism is a religious ideological movement that brooks no real alternatives - so while the State Department proclaims "a legitimate Islamism," it fails to acknowledge that Islamism, "legitimate" or not, is deeply intolerant of any other modes of expression. Not only that, but Islamism works hand-in-glove with terror groups around the world. Simply because a regime does not openly house al Qaida does not mean that the regime doesn't support al Qaida; just because a regime pretends at democracy doesn't mean that it has real democratic values.

OCCUPY were just trained to create confrontations at Tea Party events and rallies, nationwide!
In observing the OCCUPY activities over the past year or so, I surmised that their "first wave" was designed to serve as their learning curve, and that their puppet masters would then deploy them to mount "Wave Two", creating new and more vehement outrages, building on their experience.
That's now coming to pass.

Training for OCCUPY members & supporters was conducted around the U.S. this past weekend. We know of this because some Tea Party members infiltrated some training meetings and reported what they've learned
The training was conducted in cities, towns and even smaller communities. Every trainer was equipped with a DVD, handouts and a training manual, and urged to recruit others.
The training included specific instructions to attend Tea Party activities - meetings, rallies and town halls
At such Tea Party events, they were instructed to instigate confrontations and disruption. My source added, '... remember that they are well trained, well funded, extremely well organized and directed. This is no longer the ragtag bunch of fools who are clueless about what they are there for - they are still ragtag but now they have marching orders and each group will have an even better trained leader(s)".
My source also said, "...the OCCUPY movement has gone from semi-organic to fully supported and organized - and as I wrote before (and provided the links to prove this) - they are backed by the Communist and Socialist parties, UAW, SEIU, ACORN, myriad other communist/socialist organizations, Moveon.org, and of course, one of the key money people is George Soros. This collection of 'sponsors' has no good intentions; moreover they are providing tents, food, water, sleeping bags, entertainment, drugs and more. And they have insider's in key roles of leaders to incite and whip these people into a frenzy".
How should Tea Party members handle any "situations"? My suggestions:
1. For your upcoming events, contact your local law enforcement chief well in advance and appraise him or her of your concerns.
2. Share this heads up with your news media - print and broadcast outlets - in advance. Do not wait until stuff happens.
3. Ask your members to have the phone number of the local law enforcement people on their speed dial
4. Ask members to bring a video camera with sound
5..At our weekly sidewalk rallies, I'll call the police first, but if things look bad, I'll instruct my members to leave as soon as something starts. There's no use in engaging in a dispute with them because they will escalate it.
6.If they crash a meeting, call the police. Police have a handy thing in their toolkit called, "Inciting to riot" which aroundhere is good for thirty days in the slammer.
7. One purpose of their disruptions will be to create "news", in which your Tea Party appears in headlines about violence or disturbances. The other purpose is the disruption itself.
8. Be aware that the date May 1st,, May Day, is a traditional big day with lefties of all types, who know it as "International Workers Day". I've seen a separate report that OCCUPY is planning "something big" for that date, but I have no other confirmation about it.

Morning Bell: Do You Know What the Constitution Really Means?
With a handful of words, the Founders set forth a simple principle that protects a central liberty enjoyed by all in this Republic - the freedom of speech, as recognized in the First Amendment. Yet after more than 200 years of history, liberals in Congress - including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) - aim to set that freedom on its head so they can further their efforts to silence their political opponents.
The proposal, which is known as the "People's Rights Amendment," would amend the Constitution and hold that constitutional rights are only for "natural persons," meaning that corporations and legal entities would no longer enjoy the freedoms the Constitution guarantees. That would apply not just to companies like General Electric, but also to newspapers, churches, nonprofits, businesses, labor unions and book publishers alike. Individuals acting collectively - whatever their purpose - would wave the freedom of speech goodbye.

Top 5 Things You Didn't Know about the Constitution
Perhaps you were one of those people who carried around a pocket Constitution before it was cool (or at least before it became a campaign issue). Maybe you already knew about James Madison, Philadelphia, and how many Articles the Convention approved.
But we bet there are still a few things in the Constitution that even the most seasoned conservative didn't know. You can learn all of these and more in The Heritage Guide to the Constitution-the only clause-by-clause examination of the whole Constitution and how it's been interpreted over the years. And now its online!
1.Slaves aren't in the Constitution, but Pirates are.
When the 13th Amendment was ratified, not a single word of the Constitution needed to be deleted. The word "slave" or "slavery" never appears in the Constitution. In fact, the framers refused to use the words-opting instead for persons held in labor-to avoid legitimizing slavery.
Neither does the Constitution classify people according to race-not even in the oft misunderstood Three-fifths Clause. Free blacks in the North and the South were counted on par with whites for purposes of apportionment. The three-fifths compromise was designed to prevent Southern states from magnifying their political power.
Pirates, however, are in the Constitution. Piracy has long been recognized as an international crime. The Define and Punish Clause (Article I, Section 8 Clause 10) empowers Congress to "define and punish" piracy and other felonies "committed on the high seas." America's first military action was in 1801 against the Barbary pirates, whose attacks on merchant ships threatened American commerce.
What's the difference between a pirate and a privateer? The Marque and Reprisal Clause. Privateers bearing a letter of Marque and Reprisal from Congress (not the states) are authorized to attack foreign ships during wartime.
2. The Federal Government isn't the only one that's limited.
Conservatives constantly talk about the limits on federal power. In this period of wild federal overreach, many states are eager to flex some constitutional muscle. Great!
But, let's get one thing straight: the Constitution limits states too. Under the Articles of Confederation, robust commerce, a stable economy, and a coherent foreign policy were impossible. Therefore the Constitution prohibits states from creating their own currencies, taxing exports from other states, and interfering with contracts. It also forbids states from turning a pirate into a privateer, forming treaties or agreements with foreign Power, keeping troops or war ships during peacetime, or engaging in War (unless actually invaded). Don't even get us started on the myth of nullification.
3. The Constitution encourages swearing.
Before entering office, the President swears to "faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.'' But the President is not the only member of the federal government to take an oath. Article VI requires members of the legislative, executive, or judicial branches in both the state and federal government to swear to support the Constitution. The first law passed by the first Congress was "an Act to regulate the Time and Matter of administering certain Oaths."
Here's why this is significant: upholding the Constitution is the task of every officer in government, including the President, Congress, and the Supreme Court.
4. "Rights" appear once in the Constitution.
Most constitutions around the world are lists of rights: the right to work, to health care, to ecologically sustainable development and use of natural resources while promoting justifiable economic and social development. In these constitutions, rights come from government, not from nature.
But in the United States Constitution, the government does not create rights; it secures them. Therefore the word "right" is barely mentioned in the Constitution. It appears once in the unamended document: The Patents Clause in Article I, Section 8, Clause 8, stating "To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries" The Bill of Rights further secures rights by limiting the powers of the federal government.
5. States must be Republics.
The Guarantee Clause is perhaps the best-but least-known-clause of the Constitution. The clause guarantees states a republican form of government and protection from foreign invasion. The Framers agreed on three criteria for republican government: popular rule, no monarch, and rule of law. If citizens think their state government is no longer republican, they should seek relief in Congress.
There are a few odd clauses and interesting phrases in the Constitution. But there are more serious constitutional issues to discuss as well: the meaning of the First Amendment, the limits of the Commerce Clause, the extent of Congress's War Powers. To have these debates and conversations, we need to read, study, and understand the Constitution's meaning. And that's what ConstitutionOnline.com is all about.

Over the years, many friends of Hillsdale, those who never attended college here, have said to me: "Dr. Arnn, I wish I could take Hillsdale's Constitution course!"
In response to these requests, this past year, for the first time ever, Hillsdale College offered the "Introduction to the Constitution" lecture series at no charge. Frankly, I wasn't sure what sort of a response a course like this would have.
That's why I was excited to see that YOU and almost 200,000 other people from all over the United States registered for "Introduction to the Constitution."
Thank you very much for registering and participating. I hope you learned a lot from the series.
I was thrilled, not only by the response, but at what it indicates: Americans are willing and eager learn about the Constitution and to defend the principles of liberty that made America so prosperous!
And this re-awakening of national interest in the Constitution comes not a minute too soon.

Central planning sounds right. It feels good. But it has nothing to do with the realities of economics and science. There is nothing that government can do that we cannot do better as free individuals - and as groups of individuals, working together voluntarily, not at the point of a gun or under threat of a fine.

You're a 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded and dying in the jungle somewhere in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam... It's November 11, 1967. LZ (landing zone) X-ray. It doesn't seem real because no MedEvac markings are on it. Captain Ed Freeman is coming in for you. 1. The Second Coming of American Liberal Fascism?
During the Bush years, Bush was often compared to Hitler or Mussolini,. The focus of the attacks had to do with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and angst over the supposed erosion of civil liberties due to warrantless wiretaps, among other things. There was a lot of hyperbole. Bush was a monkey, a Nazi, a Fascist, the devil's spawn. The hyperbole became so hysterical some conservatives jokingly took to calling President Bush "Chimpy McBushHitler Halliburton." Many on the right go too far in attacking the motives of President Obama in the same way the left attacked Bush. It is neither rational nor sane.
President Obama is, unlike President Bush, a progressive, but he is not a fascist.
One must be careful to say such things clearly these days lest the outrage pimps on the left try to drum up outrage on less than clear precision of word choice. President Obama does however, like President Woodrow Wilson, seek to harness the power of the state for the collective good of the American people, even at the expense of the individual. Many on the right view it as a European style socialist tendency because he does so in the name of fairness and believes the government should decide what each citizen's fair share is. Consider President Obama's recent speeches on the free market and individualism and compare them to Woodrow Wilson saying, "American is not now and cannot in the future be a place for unrestricted individual enterprise."
"Reasonable" people do not often talk of fascism in the modern American state, but fascist tendencies from an earlier time in American history, properly understood, are rearing up among progressives again as President Obama amps up his heated rhetoric against free enterprise, conservatives, and the wealthy. While President Obama is not a part of what it happening, it is clear progressives, inspired by his agenda, have taken matters into their own hands to extremes we have not seen for a hundred years.
2. Obama Campaign: That Mitt Romney Comes From A Strange Family Last week we pointed out the Obama re-election strategy of criticizing his wealth and religion. After two false starts, one castigating Ann Romney for her decision to be a stay at home Mom - part of their War on Women theme - and another calling into question the reason there is a dog in the White House, one would think that the White House might try to refine their strategy a bit. But the White House is nothing if not consistent. On Friday they dispatched the hapless Governor Brian Schweitzer (D-MT) to The Daily Beast reprise the War on Women attack and to criticize Romney's religion. 3. Romney explains Obama's 'all of the above' energy policy Speaking at Consol Energy's Research and Development Facility in South Park Township, Pennsylvania the day before that state's presidential primary, Mitt Romney took on President Obama's energy policies, blaming them for increasing energy prices. 4. Vast Right Wing Reign Of Terror (VRWROT) Because the Dems no longer maintain their super-majority in both chambers of Congress, the President isn't getting everything rubber stamped and rammed through. This means, according to David Axelrod, that the conservative Republicans are imposing a "reign of terror" on all those Republicans that want to go back to rubber stamping Obama's agenda. 5. Arizona Gets its Day in Court Article 4 Section 4 of the Constitution (the Guarantee Clause) directs the federal government to guarantee the states protection from invasion. Yet, in the case of Arizona, which has been disproportionately effected by the invasion of illegal aliens and drug cartels, the Obama administration has guaranteed them nothing but lawsuits. In April 2010, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed SB 1070, a bill designed to curb illegal immigration, into law. Among other things, this law (section 2) requires police officers who were already apprehending suspects for other crimes to check with federal authorities whether that individual is in the country legally. That inquiry can be made only if there is a reasonable suspicion that the suspect is an illegal alien. Instead of working in concert with Arizona to protect its citizens from border-related violence, as prescribed by numerous laws of Congress, the Obama administration filed a lawsuit against Arizona in federal court. Most egregiously, that lawsuit was first announced by Hillary Clinton while she was overseas. The administration basically argued that states are preempted from enforcing immigration laws, and because the Obama administration has decided not to enforce those laws, Arizona was supplanting federal authority. The Obama Justice Department has also filed lawsuits against several other states that have passed similar legislation last year.

Now that's justice for Trayvon.... That's what was reportedly said by the mob of African Americans as they left the Mobile man beaten and bleeding on the ground.
According to police, Owens exchanged some words with some kids playing basketball in the middle of Delmar Drive about 8:30 Saturday night. They say the kids left and a group of adults returned, armed with pipes, bricks, chairs and anything else they could find.
Owens' sister, Ashley Parker, saw the attack and said "It was the scariest thing I have ever witnessed." Parker says nearly 20 people, all African American,came to beat her brother on the front porch of his home and beat him they did, using "brass buckles, paint cans and anything they could get their hands on."
What Parker says happened next could make the controversy surrounding the brutal beating even worse. As the attackers walked away, leaving Owen dying on the ground, Parker says one of them said "Now thats justice for Trayvon."

Saudi Arabia, the heartland of Islam, still tries and executes witches. What sort of religion can come out of a place that marries off ten year old girls and murders old women on charges of witchcraft? Exactly the sort of religion you would expect to fly planes into skyscrapers, murder teenage girls for using Facebook and base their entire society on a ladder with Muslim men at the top, Muslim women a few rungs below and everyone else somewhere at the bottom. The Saudis are not some aberration, they are Islam in its purest and truest form. This is where Islam originated, these are the people whose brutality and cunning spread it across the world, whose clans killed each other, then killed or enslaved minority groups, and then embarked on a wave of conquest that destroyed countless cultures and left behind seeds of hate that linger to this day. Unlike Egypt or Syria, they were never colonized by European powers and the impact of Ottoman influence was limited. Oil has brought in massive amounts of money, but it has changed very little. There are limousines instead of camels, the slaves have foreign passports, though they are often still slaves, there is still a brisk trade in imported luxury goods, harems for princes and clans staggering under the weight of their indolent progeny. Religiously, Wahhabism has done its best to recreate the "pure" Islam of its origins. Economically, oil has allowed the Gulf Arabs to prosper without reform or change. And if Mohammed were to ride out of the desert tomorrow, he would have little trouble fitting in, as soon as he developed a taste for Porsches. Anyone who wants to see the world as it was in Mohammed's day can visit Saudi Arabia and see inbred clans, slave labor, veiled women and thugs enforcing the will of Allah on every corner.

The founding cleric of Fatah al Islam, Sheikh Osama al Shihabi, confirmed Jawhar's death to TIME with a quote from the Koran: "'We are for God and to him we return.' We as Mujahideen are used to being killed and if God wants to give those killed dignity he gives them martyrdom. This is the path of righteousness."

'Racist Hatemongers?' Occupy to Protest 'Islamic Apartheid Conference' The Blaze April 20
Occupy demonstrators at Temple University in Philadelphia are planning to protest an "Islamic Apartheid Conference" on Monday featuring activist Pamela Geller and sponsored by the David Horowitz Freedom Center.
The conference, billed as a "universal symbol of support and encouragement" for "women, gays [and] religious minorities, including Muslims themselves, who are figuratively and physically imprisoned by Shariah and Islam," will feature Geller, Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch and activist Nonie Darwish as speakers. The event comes on the heels of an "Israeli Apartheid Week" hosted at the university last month.
To counter it, Occupy Temple is joining with the International Socialist Organization, Students for Justice in Palestine and the Party for Socialism and Liberation for a "multi-racial fightback against these racist hatemongers."

Hertz Revised, originally published 2004 & 2009 Bob, you say Palestinian Arabs feel humiliated and harassed when Israeli authorities search them and their belongings; when they are prevented from traveling freely because of checkpoints, roadblocks, closures and curfews. You say they feel "corralled."
Bob, in Israel, every Israeli is searched numerous times during the course of a single day. Israelis are asked to open their bags and purses for inspection. In most cases, they are subjected to body searches with a metal detector every time they enter a bank or a post office, pick up a bottle of milk at the supermarket, enter a mall or train station, or visit a hospital or medical clinic. Young Israeli men andwomen are physically frisked in search of suicide belts before they enter crowded nightclubs.
As a matter of routine, Israelis' car trunks are searched every time they enter a well-trafficked parking lot. Daily, their cars pass through roadblocks that cause massive traffic jams when security forces are in hot pursuit of suicide bombers believed to have entered Israel.
Israelis are searched not only when they go out for a cup of coffee or a slice of pizza, but also when they go to the movies or a concert, where the term "dressed to kill" has an entirely different meaning.
These ordinary daily humiliations now extend to similar searches when Israelis go to weddings or Bar Mitzvahs. No one abroad talks about the humiliation Jews in Israel are subjected to, having to write at the bottom of wedding invitations and other life cycle events, "The site will be secured [by armed guards]" - to ensure relatives and friends will attend and share their joyous occasion.
Bob, these ubiquitous security checks do not exist in Arab cities and towns in Israel (or, for that matter, in Judea and Samaria) because those places are not and never have been targets of Palestinian terrorism. In fact, the average Israeli is "humiliated and harassed" by being searched far more times a day than the average Palestinian. Not one human rights group, nor you, has so much as noted this massive intrusion into the rights of privacy and person imposed on Israelis.
To date, no one protests the fact that, since the 1970s, Jewish schoolchildren in Israel are surrounded by perimeter fences, with armed guards at the schoolyard gates.
Not one Arab village in Israel or the Territories has a perimeter fence around it. Guards are not required at Arab shops, cafes, restaurants, movie theaters, wedding halls or schools - either in Israel or in the Territories. Palestinians also do not need armed guards to accompany every school trip, youth movement hike or campout. They are not targets of terrorism.
Countless Israelis in sensitive areas within the Green Line - not only in the Territories, but also in Jewish towns, villages and bedroom suburbs - are "ghettoized" behind high fences.
Many Israeli motorists avoid major arteries that pass through Arab areas of Israel, while Arab citizens and Palestinians from the Territories continue to enter Jewish cities and go about their business without peril. Israelis are told, in effect, to disguise themselves when traveling abroad - not to speak Hebrew in public and not to wear garments that reveal their Jewish-Israeli origins. Even Israel 's national airline - El Al - has been forced to remove its logo from the tails of its aircraft at certain airports, out of concern for the safety of its passengers. On the other hand, Arabs who frequent Jewish cities and towns in Israel wear their traditional Arab headgear without fear of being attacked or harassed.

Why are we so concerned about what appear to be hundreds of pages of revisions to FBI counterterrorism training materials? Among many reasons, here's one. (Feb 14, 2012) In a continuing effort to address concerns related to inflammatory training material, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently met with community and interfaith organizations to provide an update on steps taken by the agency to rectify the matter. On Wednesday, February 8, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), the Arab American Institute (AAI), Interfaith Alliance, the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), Muflehun, the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), and the Shoulder-to-Shoulder campaign had an opportunity to discuss the matter with the Public Affairs Office of the FBI. Director Robert Mueller joined the meeting to discuss these matters with the representatives from the organizations. The conversation with Director Mueller centered on material used by the agency that depicts falsehoods and negative connotations of the Muslim American community. The use of the material was first uncovered by Wired Magazine in an article published on September 14, 2011. Director Mueller informed the participants that the FBI took the review of the training material very seriously, and he pursued the matter with urgency to ensure that this does not occur again in the future. ISNA President Imam Magid stated, "The discovery of FBI training materials that discriminated against Muslims did damage to the trust that was built between dedicated FBI officials and American Muslim community. We welcome and appreciate Director Mueller's commitment to take positive steps toward eradicating such materials and rebuilding trust and an open dialogue." The Director also informed participants that to date, nearly all related FBI training materials, including more than 160,000 pages of documents, were reviewed by subject matter experts multiple times. Consequently, more than 700 documents and 300 presentations of material have been deemed unusable by the Bureau and pulled from the training curriculum. Material was pulled from the curriculum if even one component was deemed to 1) include factual errors, 2) be in poor taste, 3) be stereotypical, or 4) lack precision. The meeting also provided an opportunity to share with Director Mueller other matters of concern to community members. Issues related to privacy, including the surveillance of mosques, were discussed. It was clear to all meeting participants that the issue of trust between community members and the FBI needs to be taken seriously by all of our nation's decision-makers. It was also evident that the Bureau must strengthen its efforts to build trust. The Director has testified before Congress about the invaluable contribution that the Muslim community makes to our nation's security, noting a recent bomb plot in Tampa, FL that was foiled thanks to a joint effort by the FBI and the local Muslim community. The changes proposed by the FBI to the training modules are a welcomed first step in ensuring that such a mistake does not occur again in the future. The group asked the FBI Director to issue a formal statement on this matter acknowledging the negative impact of these training materials on the Muslim community. Representatives from the community and interfaith organizations also stressed the importance of transparency by the Bureau in dealing with these matters, and suggested that a committee of community leaders and experts be assembled to review training material issued by the FBI. Meeting participants requested that the training process be open and transparent moving forward, and requested future meetings with Director Mueller to continue the conversation.

But as part of its hundreds of billions in Medicare cuts, the Obama one-size-fits-all plan slashes reimbursement rates for Medicare Advantage starting next year - herding many seniors back into the government-run program.

Catholic Bishops Call For Two Weeks of Action Against Obama

Roman Catholic leaders are calling for two weeks of public protests against President Barack Obama's policies as they intensify their argument that the administration is engaged in a war on religion.
The days between June 21 and July 4 have been set aside by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops which has sought to end the administration's contraception mandate, among other policies.
The protests against the Obama administration's policies could be "the game-changer" in the presidential election, one leading lay churchman told Newsmax on Tuesday.
The protests, dubbed "A Fortnight for Freedom" will be an "unprecedented, aggressive attack" against policies that church leaders see as an assault on religious freedom, said Catholic Advocate chairman Deal Hudson.

The Democrat habit of appointing "good Democrats" to positions without regard for the required administrative skills it calls for is hurting almost 900,000 disabled veterans.
The incompetence of Barack Obama's Veterans Affairs Department has created a bureaucratic nightmare in which more than 65% of its disability claims sit on someone's desk for more than 125 days. More than this 16% of the cases that are brought to resolution are done so in error according to veterans' advocate groups' testimony to the House Veterans Affairs Committee last week.
The V.A is totally underprepared for the predictable increase in disability claims stepped up fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan has caused. The current projections of a 1.2 million case backlog and an extra 50,000 cases a year present a sobering scenario in light of the so far failed administration of V.A. Secretary Eric Shinseki a Hawaiian Democrat and retired Army General.

The Senate on Tuesday voted down a Republican-backed motion meant to block a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) rule that speeds up union elections.
In a mostly party line vote, the Senate, as expected, voted 45 to 54 to defeat S.J. Res 36, a motion of disapproval on the NLRB ruling, halting GOP efforts to block the union election rule from taking effect.

For example, the General Services Administration is supposed to help save the taxpayers' money by implementing cost-saving policies for the massive federal bureaucracy. Then the GSA bureaucrats go wild at an $800,000 Las Vegas convention complete with clowns, bicycle building lessons and mind readers. For decades, the left has bombarded our culture with licentiousness and the message, "If it feels good, do it." Everywhere you turn there are sex scandals -- from Bill and Monica to Anthony Weiner and even the Secret Service. Hugh Hefner may be proud, but most Americans are disgusted. Now comes the news that some official at the State Department has declared the war on terror to be over. Here is the full quote: "The war on terror is over. Now that we have killed most of al Qaida, now that people have come to see legitimate means of expression, people who once might have gone into al Qaida see an opportunity for a legitimate Islamism." This official sounds like someone from Code Pink or some other far-left group. The use of the term "war on terror" again suggests that our leaders and policy makers still don't get it. If this official really believes that the "war on terror is over," then I assume we'll soon see an end to airport TSA pat downs, right? Al Qaeda has taken a beating, but I think it is premature to suggest that militant Islam has been defeated. And what exactly is "legitimate Islamism" anyway? It seems that the administration is attempting to make a separate peace with radical Islam. Religious persecution, treating women like cattle -- that's all okay so long as there's a street protest or vote along the way. Really? It seems like 1938 all over again. Obamanomics Is Bad For America The big issue in this election is the economy. In spite of the past three years, Barack Obama is trying to convince Americans that he has all the answers -- that higher taxes and more spending is the formula to economic growth. If that sounds ludicrous, that's because it is. And last week the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said as much. The CBO analyzed Obama's proposed 2013 budget and determined that after five years "the Obama proposals would reduce economic output by between 0.5 percent and 2.2 percent." Why? Because Obama's spending would require more government bonds, leaving less money for private investment. In addition, his planned tax increases would take even more money out of the private economy. Just more evidence that America cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama! Obama's Catholic Problem Responding to the Obama Administration's repeated assaults on faith, the nation's Catholic bishops are calling for the faithful to engage in a series of public protests in defense of our First Amendment freedoms. Dubbed the "Fortnight for Freedom," from June 21st to July 4th, the bishops are promising to "focus all the energies the Catholic community can muster" in defense of religious liberty. And they are calling on all men and women of faith to join them. This news is giving the Obama campaign heartburn. Obama won 54% of Catholic voters in 2008. But today his numbers are terrible. A February Rasmussen poll found that 59% of likely Catholic voters disapproved of Obama's job performance. And against Mitt Romney, Obama was losing Catholic voters 35%-to-52%. Religious liberty in America is truly at a tipping point. Catholic charities are no longer permitted to assist with adoptions in some states because the church believes marriage is between a man and a woman. Christian business owners are being fined for their faith. Now Obama wants to force religious institutions to pay for services and products that violate their values. If the government can force a church to pay for services that violate its values, it won't be long before it tries to force churches to perform services that violate their values. It was a lesson learned the hard way by Methodists in New Jersey, and a local ordinance in Kansas appears to be pushing the envelope. If Barack Obama gets four more years to pack the courts, including the Supreme Court, with left-wing activists, the battle for faith and family may be lost for generations. Here Come The Smears Hold on, folks. It's going to be a rough year. The Democrats are getting desperate and it is starting to show. Brian Schweitzer, the Democrat governor of Montana, recently tried to smear Mitt Romney by bringing up polygamy in the context of Romney's appeal to Latino voters. Schweitzer was condemned for his remarks, but he's not backing down. In fact, while attempting to defend himself, he repeated it again on CNN last night. I know the Democrats can't talk about Obama's success on the economy. But do they really want to go down this road? Not only was Obama's grandfather a polygamist, so was his father, according to this Washington Post column. Not only that, but Obama's Justice Department is in court trying to radically redefine the meaning of marriage in America so that men can "marry" other men. But once you throw out the accepted definition of normal marriage, on what basis can you legally limit marriage to just two people? What about the love of one man for his four wives? It's not a hypothetical question any more.

A Thought Experiment on You-Know-Who

So Obama, no doubt partly to shore up his weakness with Jewish voters, made a perfunctory appearance at the Holocaust Museum yesterday, where from the video and transcript it seemed that he more or less phoned it in. In introducing Obama, Elie Wiesel put him on the spot:
"How is it that Assad is still in power?" Wiesel asked. "How is it that the Holocaust's No. 1 denier is still a president? He who threatens to use nuclear weapons - to use nuclear weapons - to destroy the Jewish state. We must know that when evil has power, it is almost too late."
"Mr. President, we are here in this place of memory. Israel cannot not remember. And because it remembers, it must be strong, just to defend its own survival and its own destiny."
In light of the starkness with which Wiesel set up Obama, the actual policies Obama announced-of trying to constrict electronic surveillance of populations in oppressive countries-seems small and pathetic. Wiesel probably would probably like George W. Bush back.
But it got me to thinking about what's behind the palpable insincerity of Obama and the Left about Israel. And it turned to a larger question: As a thought experiment, just what would the Left have had against Hitler and National Socialism if he hadn't been so rabidly anti-Semitic?
The Atlantic last week reran a piece it first published in 1932 on "Ten Things You Should Know About Hitler." It mentions Hitler's "violent hatred of Marxian Socialism." Yes, that would have gained him a frown in faculty clubs. But many of the other salient aspects of Hitler's ideology sound just like what you hear from American "Progressives":
4. His concern for social betterment ('true Socialism') as a necessary prerequisite to the acceptance of his ideals by the masses.
5. His contempt for the intelligence of the ordinary man and for a democracy based on faith in his development to higher levels.
6. His contempt for parliamentary institutions as the organs of such a democracy, which substitutes for the decision of a competent leader the majority vote of the incompetent. . .
Doesn't this sound much like Tom Friedman, et al, complaining about our "dysfunctional" political system, the Senate filibuster, etc?
7. His insistence on the power of personality and on the entire concentration of authority in the hands of one leader (up to now, himself).
Cue the "hope and change" poster for "The One."
8. His economic nationalism, with its distrust of international capital and its preference for small, locally controlled business organizations. Hitler fears the banks and all newfangled ideas for controlling credit. He objects to stock companies and stresses the value of personal ownership. In short, he believes in the ruthless subordination of economic interests and economic leaders to racial and national considerations.
Now you know why the Left goes bonkers when you point out these parallels.

The old phrase "BS and balderdash" seems to have been tailor-made for Barack Obama's speech at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington yesterday. The guy cannot talk about anything, no matter how somber the subject, without talking about himself. The more somber the subject, the more he talks about himself.
Perhaps the appropriate response is the one I learned from John Cleary in The Subject Was Roses: "Bless us and save us, said Mrs. O'Davis."
Obama made news in the speech. He has established an Atrocities Prevention Board. "Is this some kind of a joke?"
And that's not all! The board is to be chaired by champion Israel-hater Samantha Power. "Good grief."

Impromptus (Minnesota edition)

National Review senior editor Jay Nordlinger, you may recall, is the author of Peace, They Say, a history of the Nobel Peace Prize. He stayed with us last week when he was in town to make a couple of presentations to audiences assembled by the Center of the American Experiment. We greatly enjoyed our time with Jay.
Jay devotes the second half of his NRO Impromptus column today to his visit, mostly paying tribute to the Center, Power Line, and the people he met up with along the way: American Experiment president Mitch Pearlstein, my family and my friend Kathy Kersten, a senior fellow of the center.
Jay describes Kathy as "that brainy and brave writer" and observes: "Braininess is common; Kathy's kind of bravery, not so much. Her pen is a threat to nostrums and cant. Naturally, some people don't like it." Bingo.
Kathy's most recent study is "Our immense achievement gap." It is an important contribution to the subject as well as a warning against another liberal fiasco in the making.
I took Jay over to the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul after his lunch presentation on Friday. I wanted to show him the battle flags of the Minnesota regiments that fought for the Union in the Civil War. On permanent display in the capitol's rotunda, the regimental flags are preserved as sacred relics. Among them are the flag of the First Minnesota Volunteers, the storied regiment that fought in the Army of the Potomac from Bull Run to Gettysburg. The capitol was built by the generation of men who fought in the Civil War; it is saturated in their sacrifice and patriotism.
Jay focused on a few items I hadn't even noticed before. One was, as he writes, "a plaque to Mrs. Andreas Ueland, 1860-1927. Never heard of. Looked her up later: Clara Hampson Ueland, a suffrage leader." Jay quotes the words of the plaque:
"May her memory save us from pettiness, all unworthy ambition, all narrowness of vision, all mean and sordid aims. As there was no weakness in her words, no weariness on her brow, no wavering in her loyalties, so may there be none in us. As she fought ever, without malice and without hatred, so may we fight."
That is precisely the sentiment I get from spending time with those regimental flags. Jay comments: "May all of us receive a tribute like that one day, and be worthy of it!"

Who played whom at Dartmouth?

Dartmouth president Jim Kim is leaving the College after only three years to become head of the World Bank. Scott reported about this development here.
Kim made good use of Dartmouth. It represented a relatively prestigious place to hang his hat for a few years until the Obama administration came to its senses and found a suitably important place for him. And his Dartmouth connection with Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner may have helped Kim secure the World Bank presidency, a position for which the doctor-anthropologist seems ill-qualified.
In any case, Kim clearly used Dartmouth.
At the same time, Dartmouth's trustees made good use of Kim. Consider the situation prior to his arrival. Alumni were disillusioned with President Wright's regime to the point that they had elected dissidents to the Board in three recent trustee elections.
The trustees had fought back by violating the longstanding agreement under which alums could elect half of the Board. And they made this bad faith breach of contract hold up by finally winning an election, after the dissidents alienated alums by suing the College. Yet the underlying discontent with the administration that had provided the impetus for the dissidents' victories remained. And another trustee election loomed.
By selecting Kim, a young, fresh-seeming outsider, the trustees were able to create the impression that the rot would be reversed. This perception became the basis for an importatnt talking point of the trustees' supporters. During the campaigning in the first post-Kim trustee election, some trustee supporters acknowledged (at last) the College's drift, but argued that with Kim in the saddle, the problem was resolved, leaving no need to elect dissidents to the Board.
This was nonsense. Far from working to stop the rot at Dartmouth, Kim perpetuated it by entrusting major responsibility to holdovers from President Wright's regime, including Dean Carol Folt who had presided over and helped perpetuate Dartmouth's academic drift. To be sure, Kim made some needed budget cuts, as he had to do. Beyond that, he seems to have devoted most of his energy to burnishing his image and to pet projects involving health care and the Med school, matters having little or nothing to do with Dartmouth's traditional mission of educating undergraduates.
At trustee election time, Kim could not, of course, explicitly endorse a candidate. But he did all he could, within that constraint, to promote the Board's hand-picked choice for the one contested seat. In describing the kind of trustee he preferred, Kim described an "anti-Joe Asch," the dissident candidate. And Kim appears to have worked behind the scenes to assist the Board's favorite with minority members of the alumni. The Board's man won handily.
Kim was thus the vehicle through which Board played Dartmouth.
He was also an outsider, though, and a very ambitious one. It's unlikely that, having served his purpose, the Board is unhappy to see him go.
And with Kim gone, the Trustees now are well-positioned to return to a more conventional kind of president - a college lifer who can be depended on never to have a thought that might rock the boat. Indeed, Dartmouth has selected as its interim president the aforementioned Carol Folt, the epitome of such a disastrous lifer.
