Marc Fink reports at the Middle East Forum's Islamist Watch that Best Buy contributed as a Platinum sponsor to the annual banquet of CAIR's Minnesota chapter this past February. Best Buy maintains its corporate headquarters in suburban Minneapolis, so this storBest Buyy hits close to home. The company is dealing with a few other public relations issues deriving from the its executive leadership and business struggles, so this story has flown under the radar.

 

The featured speaker at CAIR Minnesota's annual banquet, incidentally, was Feisal Abdul Rauf, best known as the guy who was leading the efforts to build the 13-story Islamic community center Park51 (the Ground Zero Mosque) two blocks from Ground Zero in lower Manhattan.

 

What's wrong with funneling money to an organization that holds itself out as a "civil rights group"? Isn't it a worthy object of corporate philanthropy? Well, no.

Readers will recall that the United States named CAIR an unindicted co-conspirator of the Holy Land Foundation, a fundraiser for Hamas that the government shut down in the aftermath of 9/11. I wrote about CAIR's identification as an unindicted co-conpirator of the HLF in "Coming clean about CAIR."

Mandatory 'Big Brother' Black Boxes In All New Cars From 2015

A bill already passed by the Senate and set to be rubber stamped by the House would make it mandatory for all new cars in the United States to be fitted with black box data recorders from 2015 onwards.

 

Section 31406 of Senate Bill 1813 (known as MAP-21), calls for "Mandatory Event Data Recorders" to be installed in all new automobiles and legislates for civil penalties to be imposed against individuals for failing to do so.

"Not later than 180 days after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall revise part 563 of title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, to require, beginning with model year 2015, that new passenger motor vehicles sold in the United States be equipped with an event data recorder that meets the requirements under that part," states the bill.

Fresh on the heels of the announcement by the Temple University Students for Intellectual Freedom of an Islamic Apartheid Conference April 23 at Temple University, a program exposing the suffering of millions of women and non-Muslims living under the oppression and subjugation of the sharia and debunking the vile lies and blood libels spread about the state of Israel by Islamic supremacists and their lapdog apologists (Israel Apartheid Week), comes the army of haters -- stormtroopers and brownshirts instructed to disrupt and shut down these meetings of freedom's defenders and human rights activists, as if on cue.

Subversives (like Bill Ayers) and jihadists (like CAIR and Reza Aslan) are welcomed and paid handsomely, but voices for freedom and human rights activists are hunted down and silenced like ..... dissidents.
The colleges and universities are a snapshot of what America will look like in just a few years if you don't stand up and go on the offense.

Geller is known to her fans and critics alike as "Queen of the Muslim Bashers." Her views are by no means within the boundaries of reasonable debate; the Southern Poverty Law Center considers her an extremist and calls her public statements "hate speech." Moreover, Anders Breivik (far right fanatic who killed close to 100 people in Norway last Summer) had an affection for Geller's blog, Atlas Shrugged and Spencer's Jihad Watch.

Robert Spencer runs Jihad Watch, an anti-Muslim website dedicated to the argument that Islam is an inherently terrorist religion. Spencer holds the view that "traditional Islam contains violent and supremacist elements," and that "its various schools unanimously teach warfare against and the subjugation of unbelievers." Jihad Watch is associated with the David Horowitz Freedom Center, another anti-Muslim group which uses McCarthyist tactics to attack academic freedom around the country.  Character and Integrity are more than words;  they are a way of life, and Roger Howard will be guided by his convictions and not by the union-greedy, selfish, wasteful agenda. Roger will be a big step towards restoring sanity to the way business is conducted in Harrisburg.  His first step was to signed a pledge to NOT take a state pension. He wants to serve, not be served.

Our elected officials have fallen back on old habits and are allowing unions and money toinfluence and control the agenda. Instead of real reform in Pennsylvania, all we get are crumbs  -- a few bits of crust to keep us quiet, to keep us feeling like they are doing what we elected them to do.

 

We can send a loud message that we will no longer allow special interests to come before the taxpayers' interests.

 

Yes, I believe Roger Howard has the moral fortitude to work for the taxpayer and not for special interest.

 

I am supporting Roger Howard because I believe in him. He is not a career politician willing to sacrifice his integrity for his own self-interest.

But we must have the leadership to get this accomplished.

TIME TO DO SOMETHING, FRIENDS! 
The other candidates, Smith & Welch, have been Democrats for years, switching only, of late, to the GOP. 

 

 

 

Is Tom Smith the best candidate  to represent constitutional conservative Republicans in the Senate?

 

  1. Smith is not a PROVEN conservative.  Talk is cheap; action, particularly under pressure, proves a man.  Having never held elective office, except as a Democratic supervisor of his small town in the 70's, Tom has no record of standing for conservative policies under political pressure. How many conservative candidates who said (and often believed) the right things have gone to Washington and caved to pressure? Tom is not battle-tested in the arena of politics.  How do we know he will stand?  Can we afford to be uncertain about a candidate for Senate?  With Sam Rohrer's proven voting record, we can know that where he stood in Harrisburg for 18 years, he willstand in Washington.  A proven trusted veteran conservative is who we need to take the lead in D.C. 
  2. Smith is not prepared for leadership in the Senate. Tom, as the CEO of his company, no doubt has good leadership skills.  But is he prepared to be a legislator in the highest legislative office in the land? Does he have the experience and constitutional knowledge to be able to evaluate legislation on constitutional guidelines?  Does he have the knowledge of the issues and ability to articulate them that a Senator must have?   Tom's struggling performance during the debates he attended and failure to show at several other debates indicate his lack of experience with policy issues.  The Senate is not the position to cut your teeth on; the critical issues of our times do not allow for months of adjustment and training to bring a newcomer up to speed.  Why would we assume that experience is a valued asset in every other area of life than government?  Only Sam has the experience to immediately begin contributing to the promotion of a conservative agenda in D.C.
  3. Smith has already proven himself to be unprincipled  in some contexts.When When asked directly who he voted for in the Sestak-Specter primary, Tom said he couldn't remember. He also couldn't remember whether he voted for Obama in the Primary of 2008.  Really?  Furthermore, in a recent debate, Tom said - and repeated - how much he regretted being put in a position where he had to "compromise his values" in order to get permits. So what will he compromise to make gains in D.C.?  Finally, his attack ads misrepresent the truth.  To say of Sam Rohrer that he is "just another career politician" who voted for the "unconstitutional midnight pay raise" is highly misleading and slanderous to a man of Sam's proven character. Since the PA Constitution instructs the legislature to vote on pay raises, it can hardly be called unconstitutional.  If Tom did his homework and had a regard for the truth, he would know that Sam vocally opposed and voted against the payroll voucher provision - the only unconstitutional part of that bill, never took a cent of that money, and spearheaded the repeal of the payraise. And Tom knows very well that Sam's public service has never been focused on advancing his career, presumably that is why Smith heavily supported Sam in the gubernatorial race. Sam's stand on principles has cost him the support of party leadership; that's hardly the way to advance your career.  Why is Tom Smith not more careful with the truth?  When challenged in a recent debate about the negativity of the ads, Tom said that he "had to get negative" because he "had to defend" himself.  Is that honest?  Everyone knows that the first attack ad came from Smith's campaign, not the other way around.  Sam Rohrer's campaign is focused on communicating his vision, principles, and policy ideas to the voters, not on manipulating them through misinformation.
  4. Smith can not beat Casey.  Smith's personal fortune will not make the difference in the race against Casey.  Republican money will go to whoever wins the nomination.  What will he have to challenge Casey's wider name recognition, deeper war chest, and greater knowledge of all things political?  Smith has no record of conservative votes to show up Casey's liberal voting record, as Sam does. He can not convince voters that he wouldn't vote for tax raises and increased spending by pointing to his voting record.  The Democrats have already targeted his voting record as a township supervisor to demonstrate that he did vote to raise taxes.  Sam never did in 18 years.  All Smith has to run on are words - and that is not Tom's strong suit.  Casey will make mincemeat of Tom if they ever debate the issues; anyone who has heard Tom in a debate knows that to be true.  And Tom has to convince the voters that he is knowledgeable about the issues, the problems, the solutions; he has to be able to intelligently answer questions in all kinds of public forums and media appearances.   Further, Tom's history as a former lifelong Democrat unproven in elected office weakens his support among the grassroots volunteers and the loyal Republican voters. Democrats are not likely to be drawn to a defector from their ranks. By contrast, some have already indicated support for Sam who has a record of acting independently of his party leadership, of putting the people and principles before Party.  Sam has already received the endorsement of the African Episcopalian bishops in Philly and the Pentecostal clergy of Philadelphia.  Why?  Because people across party lines are tired of politicians who are controlled by the party powerful and respond to Sam's message of truth and integrity in government proven by a consistent and principled record.  Only Sam has a record that proves him to be a defender of the Constitution and a champion of the people over the Party.

Tea party "appalled" by Welch ad

On their touchstone tax day, Pittsburgh-area tea party groups are pushing back on an ad from GOP US Senate candidate Steve Welch saying he has the support of "grassroots Republicans."

 

"I was astounded and appalled that someone who claims to be a legitimate candidate would make an incredible claim," Pittsburgh tea party leader Patti Weaver, of Fox Chapel, said in a statement emailed to reporters today. " The citizens of Pennsylvania deserve candidates who maintain a standard of truth in advertising standard.  We call on Mr. Rob Gleason to denounce this ridiculous advertisement by Mr. Welch."

 

While the Republican establishment, including Gov. Tom Corbett, is behind Welch most tea party support has gone to former state Rep. Sam Rohrer.

 

A letter Weaver and other tea party organizers sent to state GOP chair Rob Gleason...:

 

Dear Chairman Gleason:

As tea party organizers, we can tell you that the grassroots movement does not support Steve Welch as indicated in your new advertisement.  Steve Welch voted for Barack Obama and lacks the political gravitas needed for the job of U.S. Senator.

At a meet the candidate event on Sunday, April 1, Steve was asked why he voted for Barack Obama.  Initially, Steve said he was a lifelong Republican and he voted for McCain.  Yet, when pushed, Steve admitted that he switched parties and he voted for Obama in the primary.  So, contrary to his initial response, Steve Welch is not a lifelong Republican and he did vote for Barack Obama.

The statement in your new advertisement that Steve Welch is supported by the grassroots is flat out not true, neither is your statement that the grassroots Republicans have overwhelmingly endorsed Steve Welch.  Please review your numbers from the State Committee meeting and you will see that roughly 33% of those in attendance did not support endorsing anyone.  Also, those who consider themselves Grassroots at the State Committee either voted to not endorse, abstained to choose a candidate to endorse or voted for someone other than Steve Welch.

 We formally ask that you do not air this ad unless you can substantiate with market research that the Grassroots Republicans overwhelmingly endorse Steve Welch.

 We will do everything in our power to see that as many Grassroots people as possible know that Steve Welch voted for Barack Obama.

OCCUPY were just trained to create confrontations at Tea Party events and rallies, nationwide!

 

 

In observing the OCCUPY activities over the past year or so, I surmised that their "first wave" was designed to serve as their learning curve, and that their puppet masters would then deploy them to mount "Wave Two", creating new and more vehement outrages, building on their experience.

 

That's now coming to pass.

1, Training for OCCUPY members & supporters was conducted around the U.S. this past weekend. We know of this because some Tea Party members infiltrated some training meetings and reported what they've learned.

 

2. The training was conducted in cities, towns and even smaller communities. Every trainer was equipped with a DVD, handouts and a training manual, and urged to recruit others.

 

3. The training included specific instructions to attend Tea Party activities - meetings, rallies and town halls

 

3. At such Tea Party events, they were instructed to instigate confrontations and disruption. My source added, '... remember that they are well trained, well funded, extremely well organized and directed.  This is no longer the ragtag bunch of fools who are clueless about what they are there for - they are still ragtag but now they have marching orders and each group will have an even better trained leader(s)". 

 

4. My source also said, "...the OCCUPY movement has gone from semi-organic to fully supported and organized - and as I wrote before (and provided the links to prove this) - they are backed by the Communist and Socialist parties, UAW, SEIU, ACORN, myriad other communist/socialist organizations, Moveon.org, and of course, one of the key money people is George Soros.  This collection of 'sponsors' has no good intentions; moreover they are providing tents, food, water, sleeping bags, entertainment, drugs and more.  And they have insider's in key roles of leaders to incite and whip these people into a frenzy". 

 

5. How should Tea Party members handle any "situations"? My suggestions:

 

            1. For your upcoming events, contact your local law enforcement chief well in advance and appraise him or her of your           concerns.

            2. Share this heads up with your news media - print and broadcast outlets - in advance. Do not wait until stuff happens.

            3. Ask your members to have the phone number of the local law enforcement people on their speed dial

            4. Ask members to bring a video camera with sound

            3..At our weekly sidewalk rallies, I'll call the police first, but if things look bad, I'll instruct my members to leave as soon       as something starts. There's no use in engaging in a dispute with them because they will escalate it.

            4.If they crash a meeting, call the police. Police have a handy thing in their toolkit called, "Inciting to riot" which around          here is good for thirty days in the slammer.

 

6. One purpose of their disruptions will be to create "news", in which your Tea Party appears in headlines about violence or disturbances. The other purpose is the disruption itself.

 

                        7. Be aware that the date May 1st,, ­ May Day, is a traditional big day with lefties of all types, who know it as "International Workers Day".                              I've seen a separate report that OCCUPY is planning "something big" for that date, but I have no other confirmation about it.

Voter's Guide - Urgent information

Dear Patriots, 

 

As a businessman, father and grandfather I believe that we have reached a historic crossroad where we have been forced to either fight for a serious change in direction or suffer the loss of what we currently hold dear.  Unfortunately, most persons have been convinced that they should do very little or nothing at all. 

 

I was recently at the Pennsylvania Leadership Conference where a very stark revelation was made clear.  A question was asked of the 700 plus people in the auditorium:  "How many persons here believe that you have had it better than your parents?"   I believe that everyone raised their hand.  The speaker then asked "How many of you believe that your children will have it as good as you?"  Every hand went down.

 

Personally, I believe along with many others that we are in very serious trouble.  We are a very short distance from the rioting in the streets as we see in countries like Greece.  Our politicians are not seriously addressing the problems.  They continue to bribe the American public with money that is not theirs.

 

This overspending is not only dishonest and unethical; it is immoral and must be stopped if we have any real hope for our children and grandchildren.

 

Please take the time to review the voter's guide at the link provided.  You will see that there is only one candidate for US Senate who we can really count on to stand firm against the establishment pressure for "spending as usual."  The other candidates may be a help, but we do not know for certain how they will eventually vote on important issues and we honestly think they will compromise on many fronts.

 

Churches have every right to make this information available in bulk to the congregation and the general public.  They are not allowed to tell persons who to vote for, but they can tell everyone that there is a voting guide available for the Primary Election and challenge people to do their part.

 

Please get involved by distributing this Voter's Guide to as many persons as possible, especially at the polls on April 24.  Do not let this opportunity escape us.

Wilkes-Barre, PA-Friday and Saturday April 20th and 21st the F.M Kirby Center for the Performing Arts in Wilkes-Barre will host perhaps the most unique political event of the year, Restoring Freedoms.  The two day event will feature inspirational speakers and music aimed at bringing diverse groups together in hopes of returning back to the principles that have made our country great, according to Lou Jasikoff one of the event organizers.

 Thank you Jeff and Brenda Ney for this fantastic explanation!   For those of you who have asked how you can respond to people about the negative attack ads against Sam, this is information that my husband put together. I hope it helps you as you interact with people both before and on election day.


1. The pay raise vote was
NOT unconstitutional. The vote was COMPLETELY within the law. This charge by Smith is a BALD FACE LIE!. The part that was unconstitutional was the action of the State House leadership AFTER the vote, when they tried to take the raise in the same year it was enacted. They also added in an increase in unvouchered expense reimbursement also to be taken in the same year. The State Constitution only allows an increase in benefits to take place after next election cycle, to allow voters the choice of removing those that would vote for an increase in benefits.

With that being said, Sam was one of a handful of ethical legislators that fought to
REPEAL the newly enacted law, and they were successful with, Ed Rendell signing the repeal on November 16, 2005.    Bottom line SAM NEVER TOOK THE PAY RAISE OR ANY INCREASE IN PER DIEM EXPENSES! PERIOD!

2. The Pension issue. While Sam voted way back in 2001 to increase state pensions, he did so based on faulty, untruthful projection numbers given by Governor Ridge at the time. It as not
MASSIVE. It totaled about 17%. He also apogized for his vote in many public forum owning up to his mistake.     SEND THEM THIS LINK

3. 'Billed Taxpayers over $14,000 in 'personal expenses'.

First of all, they are
NOT personal expenses. The State House has a LAWFUL per diem reimbursement for expenses while conducting State business on State time. The lawmakers do not 'bill' the state for their expenses, they fill out an expense report like everyone does in business. Rohrer has been consistently in the bottom 5% for the use of these monies. A fact this hit piece fails to acknowledge. After numerous Google searches, I was unable to find the article referenced in the hit piece.

Lastly, you can tell people that these false advertisements show the true character of a candidate. Tell them if Smith is lying to you now, how can you ever trust him to tell the truth once in office. You might also tell them he is spending over $250,000 a year on the political consultants that help him put together these hit pieces and that he is voted in 19 straight Democratic primaries for Democratic candidates before turning Republican.

It's easy to attack the record of another when you have 
NO VOTING RECORD YOURSELF!!!

George W. Bush to speak in Pennsylvania on GOP presidential primary day

Former President George W. Bush will deliver a speech in Pennsylvania on the day of the state's GOP presidential primary. Bush is the only prominent politician in his family that has not made an endorsement in the 2012 presidential race.

Bush will give the keynote address at the Plumstead Christian School's annual "Founders Forum" on the Calvary Church's campus in Souderton, according to the school's official website.

His father, former President George H. W. Bush is the most recent member of the Bush family to endorse former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for president.

Bush reportedly asked Romney if his son had endorsed him for president yet.

"I haven't met with President George W. Bush," Romney said. "We speak from time to time."

Barbara Bush, his wife, replied, "We'll talk about that."

Five Republicans battle in April primary to oppose Sen. Casey in fall

WASHINGTON -- Everyone, it seems, wants Bob Casey's job.

Who wouldn't? The U.S. senator from Pennsylvania has one of Washington's most sought-after offices outside the White House.

 

His third-floor space in the Russell Senate Office Building was once occupied by the young Sen. John F. Kennedy. Four 8-by-10 shots on the wall show that Mr. Kennedy's desk was in the spot now reserved for office visitors who perch on a yellow couch to meet with Mr. Casey.

 

The office space, though, doesn't go with the job. Offices are assigned by seniority. Mr. Casey got the coveted spot when its prior occupant, Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., took over Joe Biden's office when the Delaware senator became vice president.

 

That's something Steve Welch, Tom Smith, Sam Rohrer, Marc Scaringi, David Christian and Joe Vodvarka ought to know.

 

The five Republicans and one Democrat -- Mr. Vodvarka -- are on the ballot to unseat the one-term U.S. senator from Scranton. John Kensinger wants a shot, too. The Bedford County pharmacist is running as a write-in candidate after failing to collect enough signatures to appear on the Republican primary ballot.

Recent polls show no clear frontrunner in the Republican contest, but indicate that Mr. Casey would beat any of them if the general election were held today.

I've been serving in the US Army for 15 years and am pushing for 20 years. My wife, as well is in the Army National Guard.  I have been deployed several times and was honored to serve my country. I worked for the Montco Sheriff Dept for 6 years before I made a job change to Lebanon County and then worked as a Police Officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs for 6 years.  I then went back to my "home" county where all my friends and family live and have been enjoying my time at the Montco Sheriff Dept since Sept 2010.  I am looking to push for 300 Republican write in signatures. The Decline of American Monuments and Memorials

MICHAEL J. LEWIS the Faison-Pierson-Stoddard Professor of Art at Williams College, has taught American art and architecture at Williams since 1993. After receiving his B.A. from Haverford College in 1980 and two years at the University of Hannover in Germany, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. He has also taught at Bryn Mawr College, McGill University in Montreal, and the University of Natal in South Africa. He has written for the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Commentary, and The New Criterion, and his books include The Gothic Revival and American Art and Architecture.

 

The following is adapted from a lecture delivered on March 2, 2012, at Hillsdale College's Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. Photos of the monuments mentioned in this lecture can be viewed at hillsdale.edu/lewis.

 

THIS HAS BEEN an extraordinary year for American monuments. The memorial at Ground Zero opened last September in New York. One month later came the dedication of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial here in Washington, and soon to come to Washington-or perhaps not-is the memorial to President Eisenhower, which is to be a collaboration between architect Frank Gehry and sculptor Charles Ray. Each of these has been the subject of furious controversy, especially those in Washington.

 

The King Memorial was criticized for engaging a sculptor from Communist China, who saw to it that Chinese rather than American granite was used for the structure-which accounts for its "Made in China" inscription. Even worse, the memorial managed to misquote the great man: Not only did he not say, "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness," but his actual words were a hypothetical statement put in someone else's mouth. Worse still is the demeanor and expression of the sculpture. King was above all an orator, and in photographs he is invariably open in stance, speaking, gesturing, demonstrating, with his energy directed outward. Yet in the monument he is depicted with arms folded, utterly detached. Instead of inspiring warmth, there is the infinite aloofness of an idol.

 

The proposed Eisenhower Monument has been criticized on opposite grounds. Instead of making its subject a 30-foot effigy, it turns him into a diminutive country boy. In an outdoor public space that is part formal civic plaza and part wooden urban park, columns in the background will support a wire mesh screen depicting images of the Kansas prairie of Eisenhower's childhood. And at the center will be the sculpture of Eisenhower as a dreamy country boy "looking out onto his future achievements"-an unconventional depiction, given that there were millions of dreamy country boys and only one Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe in World War Two.

 

As different as the King and Eisenhower memorials are, the public's dismay in each instance has the same cause: These aren't the men we knew. It is not easy, of course, to make a succinct statement in sculptural form of the essence of a man's life. It is something American art has always struggled with, especially in our chronic divided loyalty between realism and idealism. But this is the least of the problems with the Eisenhower and King memorials. They fail fundamentally as monuments, not because they misunderstand the nature of their subjects, but because they misunderstand what a monument is, or should be.

 

As traditionally understood, a monument is the expression of a single powerful idea in a single emphatic form, in colossal scale and in permanent materials, made to serve civic life. (Materials and size distinguish monuments from memorials, of which monuments are a subset.) But I suspect that if Frank Gehry were asked to define a monument, he would say something to the effect that a monument is not a thing but a process-an open-ended conversation in which various constituencies bring different interpretations to different forms. I have heard versions of this definition for decades. And it is simply not good enough.

1. Dick Lugar Needs To Fire His 'New Media' Guy

I don't know who 'starzandstripez' is, but the person has an account at RedState and is a new media consultant.

I know the person is a new media consultant because the person is exhibiting all the same bad habits idiots exhibit when posing as people who "get" new media and really have no freaking clue.

The account has been active for just over a month and in that time has posted one positive post about Chris Fields in Minnesota, one attack on Shelley Berkley in Nevada, and seven attacks on Richard Mourdock in Indiana, the bulk of which have poured in over the past two days. There's also one completely out of place post in opposition to meth laws in Oregon.
In other words, who is on the payroll of Chris Fields, Dean Heller, Dick Lugar, and Pharma reps in Oregon?

This is a bad new media consultant trying to earn his or her keep. Why bad?


 

2. House GOP Appropriators Continue to Grow Government

It's time we invoke a new rule when discussing the federal budget: don't focus on spending cuts; focus on limiting the size of government. All too often we get caught up in dollar figures of various government programs and agencies, instead of focusing on their imperative to exist in the first place.

The first step in approaching a spending bill is to determine if the given venture is constitutionally sound. If the answer is no, there's nothing more to debate. The second step is to determine if that venture, which is constitutionally sound, is helpful or harmful.

Needless to say, if it is harmful to the public then it should be scuttled. Finally, once the constitutional rationale and the imperative for the venture are established, we can discuss the funding level of that venture.

The case in point is the Energy-Water appropriations bill, which funds the Department of Energy and parts of the Department of Interior. There is no reason for the DOE to exist. Period. The nuclear program could easily be transferred to another part of the federal government, while we eliminate all of the wasteful programs that have not only failed to increase our energy supply, but encumbered its growth over the past few decades. Now that Republicans have focused so much attention on merely trimming the DOE budget, it turns out that they failed to cut anything!

CQ reports that the Energy-Water bill passed out of the Energy-Water Appropriations subcommittee yesterday by voice vote actually appropriates $32.1 billion, an $88 million increase above fiscal 2012 levels. But here is the most egregious part of the bill:

 

  

3. The Palin-Bolling Proposal To Lower Gas Prices
Conservatives need to do a better job of explaining how they would lower gas prices. More drilling is a great piece of the pie, but there needs to be more. Governor Sarah Palin and Eric Bolling, Fox News host of of The Five, have put together a comprehensive plan to lower gas prices and they mapped out the details in the video below.

The Ted Cruz campaign has released a new video detailing the timeline of the Fast and Furious scandal. The Legacy of European Colonialism

Israel is often referred to as a colonial power responsible for much of the instability in the Middle East. The problem is that this labeling is a total fallacy. Unlike nation-states in Europe, modern Lebanese, Jordanian, Syrian, and Iraqi nationalities did not evolve; they were arbitrarily created by colonial powers.

In 1919, in the wake of World War I, England and France carved up the former Ottoman Empire into geographic spheres of influence, dividing the Mideast into new political entities with new names and frontiers. Some of the newly created states' names came from classical antiquity, such as Syria and Palestine, while others were based on geographic designations, such as Jordan and Lebanon. Iraq, for example, was a medieval province with borders very different from those of the modern state, which excluded Mesopotamia in the north and included part of what is now western Iran.

Territory was divided along map meridians without regard for traditional frontiers (i.e., geographic logic and sustainability) or the ethnic composition of indigenous populations. The prevailing rationale behind these artificially created states was how they served the imperial and commercial needs of their colonial masters. Iraq and Jordan, for instance, were created as emirates to reward the noble Hashemite family from Saudi Arabia for its loyalty to the British against the Ottoman Turks during World War I, under the leadership of Lawrence of Arabia. Iraq was given to Faisal in 1918. To reward his elder brother Abdullah with an emirate, in 1922 Britain cut away 77 percent of their mandate over Palestine earmarked for the Jews and gave it to him, creating the new country of Transjordan or Jordan, as it later was named.

The European nation-state model was ill suited to the structure of social organization indigenous to the Middle East where clans, tribes, ethnic groups, Islamic sects, and regional loyalties dominate social units. Much of the conflict in Arab states today reflects that reality, and anti-Zionism has become the glue that holds them together.

Iraq is a case in point. Writing in the Guardian, Oxford historian Avi Shlaim notes that in the 1920s, pan-Arabists hoped Iraq "would be a national prototype for other Arab nations - a 'Prussia of the Middle East.' Iraq however was an artificial state," said Shlaim, "cobbled together by Britain out of three ex-Ottoman provinces, and bereft of any ethnic or religious rationale ... lack[ing] the essential underpinnings of a national bond." The Kurds in the north, comprising 20 percent of the Iraqi population, are a non-Arab Indo-European ethnic group that aspired to political independence as part of Kurdistan. The Shiite Muslims in the south (50 percent of the population) viewed Arab nationalism as a devilish plan by the rival Sunni Muslims (30 percent) to dominate them. "In the face of such deep and pervasive divisions, it was a well-nigh impossible task to achieve the two basic objectives of the Arab national movement: unity and independence." Yet many Arabs, writes Shlaim, saw anti-Zi onism as a convenient tool and grand cause that would unite Arabs by "keeping Palestine in Arab hands. ... Unity would be forged on the anvil of war against the common enemy."

Still, the Arabs' hatred of Israel has never been strong enough to prevent the bloody rivalries that repeatedly rock the Middle East from civil wars in Yemen, Lebanon, and Syria to the war between Iraq and Iran, or gassing of countless Kurds in Iraq. Since their creation as states, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq (and their respective national identities) have been held together by demographic balancing acts or dictatorial regimes and anti-Zionist glue. The fragility of these national identities has been demonstrated time and again in civil wars, feuds, assassinations, coups, and uprisings sparked by tribal, ethnic and religious rivalries, and conflicting loyalties.

The manner in which European colonial powers carved out political entities with little regard to their ethnic composition not only leads to inter-ethnic violence, but also encouraged dictatorial rule as the only force capable of holding such entities together, according to Hebrew University Professor Shlomo Avineri. That phenomenon also poses a stumbling block that to this day makes democratization a difficult objective to achieve in places like Iraq.

Against this backdrop, members of the EU want another chance to remold the Middle East, including a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, which the British were unable to resolve during 30 years of British Mandate rule. Even during that period, Great Britain's track record was poor, conjuring up a series of so-called peace plans that attempted to appease the Arabs so that they would accept the Jews. Today, the EU aims to solve the conflict at Israel's expense for a host of self-serving reasons.

According to a recent CQ article (see below, highlights added), FBI leadership is moving forward with a plan that could purge from its counterterrorism training materials "references to Muslims...that it deemed offensive." As we all know, groups like CAIR want EVERY reference to radical Islam removed because they deem ANY terrorism reference to Islam "offensive."

We have learned that this potential capitulation by the FBI leadership to politically-correct special interest pressure has some Members of Congress concerned-and they should be.

So are we. And so should you.

With annual congressional hearings addressing the FBI just around the corner, we need to take action NOW to make sure the appropriate congressional committees are aware that there is opposition to these proposed changes from the folks back home. As you know, it's almost impossible to get Congress to take action on something unless they feel some "heat" from their constituents.

This is why it's critical we make our voices heard on this important issue NOW! And it's essential that we speak out loud and strong!

The first step in addressing this issue is an open letter to the chairmen of the appropriate House and Senate committees. Some of these committees are scheduled to hold hearings on the FBI very soon. THEY NEED TO HEAR FROM TENS OF THOUSANDS OF AMERICANS that making changes to counterterrorism training manuals without any congressional input, to appease political correctness, is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE, because doing so WILL MAKE US LESS SAFE!!!!

Please add your name to this open letter and forward it to everyone you know. Please don't delay. We only have a few weeks to mobilize opposition to these foolish, ill-advised proposed changes before the U.S. Congress discusses issues related to the FBI. We need to be sure that when they do, our federal legislators have the benefit of knowing that many Americans are opposed to these changes.

  The Obama administration has already purged all references to radical Islam and jihad from its national strategic threat assessments. We can't let this happen at the FBI as well. FBI agents in the field need to have training materials that accurately define the threat-for their safety and for ours.

We CAN stop these changes from happening, IF WE ACT.

  Afternoon Take: FBI to Change Counterterrorism Training Policies

The FBI is reportedly amending its training materials to eliminate references to Muslims and Arab-Americas that it deemed offensive, a change at least one high-ranking Democratic senator has championed.

The bureau recently notified Congress that it removed the references it deemed offensive, along with language saying that agents had the ability to suspend the law and impinge on the freedoms of others in the course of investigations, the New York Times reported. The story noted that Sen. Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill., wrote to FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III, earlier this week about the training material.

Durbin's letter raised concerns that an internal review of its training materials by the bureau uncovered evidence of instructions for agents to make assumptions about Islam, Muslims and Arab Americans based on crude stereotypes, including language such as "Islam is a highly violent religion," and "mainstream American Muslims are likely to be terrorist sympathizers."

Durbin asked the FBI make the training materials public and hold accountable the individuals responsible for the language deemed offensive.

Rep. Trent Franks, one of a group of House Republicans that has questioned whether the Obama administration's review of its counterterrorism training policies put politics over security, said he was unhappy with what he called the FBI's lack of communication with Congress about its training manual reviews. The Arizona Republican said he wants details about who advised the FBI during the process.

"The FBI must not permit outside parties to censor the true or critical material from FBI training curricula just because someone feels it to be politically incorrect," he told CQ. "We want to know who these outside reviewing parties are, what their affiliations are, and whether they are being permitted in some instances to overrule the judgment of seasoned FBI trainers."

Afghanistan At Home

Last week I was able to observe some of the top police brass doing what they do and it struck me how similar Community Policing is to Counterinsurgency. Both are methods used to control violence in fragmented multicultural areas by building trust and winning over tribal leaders in the hopes of lowering their group's participation in crime and terrorism while getting them to cooperate with the local forces and act as informants on the bad guys.

 
In Afghanistan it may be a matter of navigating the Pashtuns, Hazaras and Tajiks, and their various families, while in Brooklynbad, Al-Minneapolis or Londonistan it's Somalis, Turks and Lebanese, but it's still much the same game. The big brass, in coordination with local activists who claim to represent the community leadership, unveil a new strategy which involves lots of face time, aid and respect for the assorted cultures involved. The boys in blue or khaki fall in line, but know that it mostly comes down to having enough boots on the ground and hoping that the locals are afraid enough not to try anything big.

We can of course withdraw from Afghanistan, send up the choppers in whirls of dust, ship the gear back home and trim down the military. And some of those ex-soldiers will go into local police forces and security companies where they will be doing the same thing they did back in Afghanistan, but with less firepower and more discretion, because while the people on the ground may be Pakistanis, Somalis or Iraqis, they have the right papers and are officially Americans or Europeans.

Withdrawing from Baghdad or Kabul is a snap compared to withdrawing from London or Los Angeles and even small towns are on the line. 3,000 Somalis showed up in Lewiston, Maine, pop. 36,000. Now Lewiston has nearly double the violent crime rate of the state average. In the Finnish town of Lieksa, it's the same story. Or in Shelbyville, Alabama. There are Little Mogadishus all over which share the problems of the big Mogadishu. The bigger they get, the bigger the problems get.

There was always a thin line between community policing and counterinsurgency, but the rise of domestic Muslim violence has nearly eliminated the line as the insurgency comes home. In Afghanistan soldiers look for IEDs, while back in London or New York their law enforcement colleagues search for bombs in cars and bus stations. Angry bearded mobs shake their fists and threaten death in London and Jalalabad. And uniformed men visit mosques, take off their shoes and discuss working together with the local leaders on stopping the violence.

The Governing Class and Us 

In a speech yesterday in Elyria, Ohio -- a small town just outside Cleveland sitting at the forks of the Black River -- President Barack Obama delivered a politically charged speech in which he hearkened back to the country's roots, saying that his opponents "don't seem to remember how America was built." In his view, taxpayers want their money spent in ways that will help further "the larger project we call America." In other words, more spending and bigger government paid for with higher taxes.

In a city quite unlike Elyria, thousands of miles west, sprawling forth from the desert just east of Death Valley, officials from this federal government provided the latest example of what happens when the president's philosophy succeeds -- when layer upon layer of government grows so big that it begins to serve the interests of a ruling class, rather than the people from whom it derives its power. Two years ago in Las Vegas, the General Services Administration (GSA) -- a little-known federal agency that helps manage other federal agencies -- blew through $820,000 in taxpayer funds for a lavish, booze-fueled conference for 300 employees, complete with magic shows, margaritas, and a self-produced rap video making fun of the spending. (It's worth mentioning that in 2009, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) asked White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel for help in encouraging government meetings to be held in Nevada.)

Could Barack Obama be wearing Malcolm X's sunglasses in the picture surfacing of the President's bloated face asleep on a floral imprinted stuffed sofa? Eyes closed with decidedly swollen cheeks, Obama appears to be fast asleep. But close examination of that picture reveals the glasses seem old and have a very revealing factor involving a missing left arm piece. A copyright protected blog by Martha Trowbridge and Erik Rush speculates, "Could Obama be wearing Malcolm X's eyeglasses?"

On that dreadful day, February 21, 1965, Trowbridge postulates Malcolm could have been shot wearing those same glasses that Barack Obama, Jr. has on while sleeping on that stuffed sofa. Legitimate polls are telling a quite different story.  Last Friday Rasmussen reported  Obama is trailing Mitt Romney 48/43 among likely voters which is bad enough, but his accompanying reports leave those predicting a "big" win for Obama next November little to be happy about. Patriots' Day: Sons of Liberty Then and Now

North Bridge Memorial

Today, April 19th, is the 237th anniversary of Patriots' Day, marking the opening salvo of the American Revolution and the beginning of the greatest experiment in human Liberty.

A quick search of the Obama White House website reveals not a single reference to this most notable date in the history of our Republic -- not that I expected to find any acknowledgment of such. I am certain that the current statist regime occupying the Executive Branch would not want to promote this formative event distinguished by a call to arms to turn back a growing tide of tyranny.

Try though Barack Hussein Obama might to ignore it that is precisely what occurred on this day in 1775, when a small band of citizen Patriots challenged the authority of the most powerful government in the history of man. Take a moment to revisit the events of that day, and share with contemporary citizens who may never have had an introductory lesson in civics, the story of how a small group of American Patriots irrevocably altered the course of history toward a new bearing of Liberty.

 

In December of 1773, the Sons of Liberty, a group of Boston "radicals" acting under the leadership of Samuel Adams, galvanized a rebellion against authoritarian colonial rulers, through the simple act of dumping tea into Boston Harbor -- a protest of a small three pence tax levied by the British. That event was immortalized as the "Boston Tea Party," and was the inspiration for the rising rebellion in this era called the Tea Party Movement.

 

Sixteen months after the Boston Tea Party, the first Patriots' Day began with the horseback gallop of Paul Revere and William Dawes, just after midnight, en route to Concord, Massachusetts. Their mission was to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams that British troops were coming to arrest them and seize their weapons. The British understood that to render neutral any resistance to tyranny, they must first disarm the people and remove from them the palladium of the liberties.

Revere was captured but Dawes and Samuel Prescott, who had joined them along the way, escaped and continued toward Concord. Dawes later fell from his horse, but Prescott, who knew the area well enough to navigate rapidly at night, made it to Concord in time to warn the Sons of Liberty.

At dawn, farmers and laborers, landowners and statesmen alike, gathered to confront the British, pledging through action what Thomas Jefferson would later frame in words as "our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor." Thus began the great campaign to reject the predictable albeit tyrannical order of the state and to embrace the difficult toils of securing individual Liberty. It was this as-yet unwritten pledge by militiamen in the Battles of Lexington and Concord that would delineate the distinction between Liberty and tyranny in Colonial America.

 

Why would the first generation of American Patriots forgo, in the inimitable words of Samuel Adams, "the tranquility of servitude" for "the animating contest of freedom"?

The answer to that question defined the spirit of American Patriotism at the dawn of the American Revolution, and to this day and for eternity, that spirit will serve as the first line of defense against tyranny.

 

Comment: How will you celebrate Patriots' Day?

 

In the first months of the American Revolution, English author and lexicographer Samuel Johnson, a Tory loyalist, wrote that American Patriots' quest for liberty was nothing more than "the delirious dream of republican fanaticism" which would "put the axe to the roots of all government." Johnson concluded famously, "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."

 

In the same year Johnson founded the now-popular pastime of denigrating American Patriotism, Founder Alexander Hamilton was aptly defining its Foundation: "To grant that there is a supreme intelligence who rules the world and has established laws to regulate the actions of his creatures; and still to assert that man, in a state of nature, may be considered as perfectly free from all restraints of law and government, appears to a common understanding altogether irreconcilable. Good and wise men, in all ages, have embraced a very dissimilar theory. They have supposed that the deity, from the relations we stand in to himself and to each other, has constituted an eternal and immutable law, which is indispensably obligatory upon all mankind, prior to any human institution whatever. This is what is called the law of nature."

 

Hamilton continued: "Upon this law depends the natural rights of mankind: the Supreme Being gave existence to man, together with the means of preserving and beatifying that existence. He endowed him with rational faculties, by the help of which, to discern and pursue such things, as were consistent with his duty and interest, and invested him with an inviolable right to personal Liberty, and personal safety. The Sacred Rights of Mankind are not to be rummaged for, among old parchments, or musty records. They are written, as with a sun beam, in the whole volume of human nature, by the Hand of the Divinity itself; and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power."

Our Founders declared "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights," and they constituted this affirmation in order to "secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity."

 

Unlike King George's partisans and generations of authoritarians since, American Patriots were and remain unwaveringly loyal to something much larger than a mere man or geo-political institution. They pledged their sacred honor, as do we, in support of Essential Liberty as "endowed by our Creator" and enshrined in our Declaration of Independence and its subordinate guidance, our Constitution.

 

It is this resolute devotion to the natural rights of man, the higher order of Liberty as endowed by God, not government, which defines the spirit of American Patriots, and has obliged the animating contest of freedom from Lexington Green to this day.

 

Since the dawn of Patriots' Day in 1775, and loudly again in the present era, the essence of Johnson's denigration of patriotism has been repeated by statists, who augment their disdain for Patriots with words like "fascist," "nationalist" and "jingoist."

 

These statists, Democratic Socialists in the current vernacular, would have us believe that they are the "true patriots," and only they deserve to be the arbiters of Liberty. But, caveat emptor: As George Washington implored in his Farewell Address, "Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism."

 

Liberty, as affirmed through natural law, is an abject affront to Socialists, who can claim dominion over others only if they supplant Rule of Law with their own rule. For such statists, the notion of serving a higher purpose than oneself is enigmatic; consequently, there is a raging ideological battle between Democratic Socialists and Patriots across our nation today.

 

Our steadfast support for Liberty and limited government is diametrically opposed to the Socialist manifesto of the once-noble Democrat Party, as reframed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1933, and renewed by every Democrat president since.

 

Regardless of how statists choose to promote Democratic Socialism, like National Socialism it is nothing more than Marxist Socialism repackaged. Ultimately, it likewise seeks a centrally planned economy directed by a dominant-party state that controls economic production by way of taxation, regulation and income redistribution.

 

So, will this Patriots' Day pass without our renewed commitment to keep and carry forward the endowment which inspired those who fired the "shot heard 'round the world"?

Of those content to be subjects rather than citizens, Samuel Adams' stirring words ring true today: "If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands, which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!"

 

Of course, the ranks of American Patriots today, however thin, are much like those of previous generations. We remain singularly devoted to the defense of Liberty over tyranny.

In 1775, John Adams wrote, "A Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever."

In 1776, George Washington, in General Orders, wrote, "The time is now near at hand which must determine whether Americans are to be freemen or slaves; whether they are to have any property they can call their own; whether their houses and farms are to be pillaged and destroyed, and themselves consigned to a state of wretchedness from which no human efforts will deliver them. The fate of unborn millions will now depend, under God, on the courage and conduct of this army. Our cruel and unrelenting enemy leaves us only the choice of brave resistance, or the most abject submission. We have, therefore, to resolve to conquer or die."

 

Once again, the time is at hand when our Patriot ranks must determine whether Americans are to be freemen or slaves -- and this election year will determine in large measure the fate of our nation.

The Race Has Gone To The Dogs

I can't believe I'm writing about dogs, but for months now the Obama campaign has tried to pigeonhole Mitt Romney as a heartless, out-of-touch elitist. Part of its narrative has focused on how the Romney family once transported their Irish Setter, Seamus, on a family vacation to Canada (in a crate on the roof of the family car.) Oh the horror!

But this isn't a joke. The Obama campaign is attempting to create a Romney "doggate" scandal. Liberals are making Seamus a constant talking point. In fact, one New York Times columnist has written about the dog more than 50 times! Lanny Davis, a well-respected Democrat insider, never misses an opportunity to inject the dog's treatment into an interview.

There is even a website devoted to "Crategate" and a Facebook page with more than 50,000 fans. David Axelrod is tweeting pictures of dogs. Why? Because Americans love their dogs and Obama and his hacks are willing to politicize EVERYTHING.

Well, now the news has broken that 30 years ago as a young boy growing up in Indonesia, Barack Obama, actually dined on dogs! I might be inclined to give the president a pass on this. After all, it's hard to hold him responsible for what he did as a child. But Democrats seriously think they can use the "Seamus scandal" to smear Romney and win votes. Fine. The gloves are off!

At least the Romneys loved their dog so much that they didn't want to put Seamus in a kennel and built a special crate so they could take him with them on the family trip. Now would you rather be the dog on Romney's roof or the dog on Obama's dinner plate? Instead of the bumper sticker, "Mitt is Mean," how about "Barack Bites"? Some bloggers have weighed in and suggested Obama eats "pup tarts" and loves "chicken poodle soup."

Seriously, folks, this story is just one more example of the Obama campaign's attempt to distract you from far more serious issues like the economy, the debt, Obama's foreign policy disasters and his attack on religious liberty and our values.


Welcome To Obama's "Recovery"

The latest economic reports suggest the Obama "recovery" is stalling. Existing home sales fell 2.6%. Economists had been expecting an increase in sales. The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank's report on manufacturing activity in the Mid-Atlantic states indicated that new factory orders fell to their lowest levels since September. Economists were predicting a small decline from 12.5 to 12.0, but the index of business activity fell to 8.5.

In addition, new claims for unemployment benefits fell 2,000. That's good news, right? Not exactly. Last week's numbers were, once again, revised upward by 8,000. So even though the media will report 2,000 fewer new claims for unemployment, suggesting an improving jobs picture, we're actually worse off by 6,000 lost jobs!

This manipulation of the employment data has been an ongoing pattern for weeks now. So much so that the most important figure to pay attention to is not the number of new claims but what the previous week's figure was revised to.

For example, the media have routinely reported drops in new unemployment claims week after week. Almost a month ago, the figure stood at 348,000. And the headlines were trumpeting a new four-year low, suggesting a real turnaround in the economy. But now, we're up to 386,000 weekly claims for jobless benefits. That's nearly 40,000 lost jobs! Have you heard that figure anywhere?


Scandal Update

The Colombian prostitution scandal has ended the careers of three Secret Service agents. One reportedly resigned, another was allowed to retire, and one was fired, although he will be allowed to contest his termination. ABC News reports that eight more agents "remain on administrative leave with suspended security clearances."

This scandal and the recent GSA scandal are taking their toll. Washington reporters are now writing about whether they will impact the public's perception of Obama's competence. But there's another brewing sex scandal that Democrats are working hard to keep quiet.

Tuesday North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue (D) demanded the resignation of David Parker, chairman of the state's Democrat Party, after it was learned that Parker personally signed off on a sexual harassment case involving the executive director of the North Carolina Democrat Party, Jay Parmley. Parmley resigned his position over the weekend when news broke that he had sexually harassed and then fired another male staffer.

This scandal could not come at a worse time for the Democrats. Obama will visit North Carolina next week. A marriage protection amendment will be on the North Carolina ballot next month. And Democrats are pressuring Obama to endorse same-sex "marriage" in the platform at the Democrat National Convention this September -- in Charlotte, North Carolina.


TransCanada Tries Again

TransCanada has submitted a new route for its proposed Keystone XL pipeline to the state of Nebraska. You may recall that Barack Obama blocked the previous route, citing environmental concerns. The company immediately promised to reconfigure the route, and yesterday it made good on that promise. The Obama Administration is involved only because the pipeline crosses our border with Canada.

Radical environmentalists, however, don't care what route the company suggests. They don't want ANY pipeline built. They don't want us using Canada's oil, derived from tar sands. But the envirowackos and their liberal allies have their heads stuck in the sand.

Canada's oil will be used -- either by us or by the Chinese. Our national security demands we do everything possible to get more oil from friendly allies like Canada, rather than rely on hostile or unstable regimes in the Middle East.

The Keystone XL pipeline has been reviewed and studied for three years. So approval of the new route should be relatively quick and easy, right? Wrong. The Obama White House is promising to slow walk the latest proposal. A State Department official said, "If TransCanada comes in with a new application, it will trigger a new review process, a completely new review process."

House Republicans think that is absurd. Yesterday, the House passed a transportation funding bill that mandated construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. It was the fifth time that the GOP-led House has passed legislation approving the pipeline. Sixty-nine Democrats supported the bill, but Obama is threatening to veto it.


Romney To Speak At Liberty University

It was announced today that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will deliver the 2012 commencement address at Liberty University. One speech does not make a campaign, but this is an important opportunity for the Romney campaign to reach out to evangelicals and values voters by explaining what a Romney Administration would mean to them.

It also reminds me that four years ago Reverend Jerry Falwell sat down with Gov. Romney, me and other conservative, pro-family leaders, and concluded that he could be comfortable with a Romney presidency. Obviously, I haven't seen the speech yet, but I'm sure Mitt Romney will make it crystal clear to the Liberty graduates that the battle this November is for the heart and soul of America.

House Committee Votes to Close Tax Credit Loophole!

Yesterday, Members of the House Ways & Means Committee voted 22-12 to stop the IRS from giving refundable tax credits to illegal aliens.

Last year, the Inspector General for the U.S. Treasury Department released a report revealing that illegal aliens annually receive $4.2 billion in refundable tax credits, primarily through the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC).

The Ways and Means Committee voted to close this tax credit loophole by requiring that individuals who claim the ACTC provide a valid Social Security Number (SSN), based on language introduced by Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX). Currently, the IRS only requires applicants for the ACTC to provide an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), which the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) indiscriminately hands out to illegal aliens.

The legislation was part of a budget reconciliation proposal that now goes to the House Budget Committee for inclusion in a larger package aimed at saving tax-payer dollars.

How should one's faith shape his or her engagement in the policy arena?

Political Correspondent David Brody recently asked that question of House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) concerning the Republican budget plan. In a taped interview for the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), Ryan, a Roman Catholic, identified care for the poor as a fundamental tenet in the social teachings of his Church.

For Ryan, that teaching means: "Don't keep people poor, don't make people dependent on government so that they stay stuck at their station in life. Help people get out of poverty."

Ryan believes his federal budget plan helps accomplish that goal. In a letter last year to then-Archbishop (now Cardinal) Timothy Dolan of New York, Ryan stated that his proposed budget better targets assistance to those in need, repairs the social safety net, and fulfills the mission of health and retirement security for all Americans. Furthermore, if the U.S. government continues to drive up the deficit through reckless spending, Ryan wrote that "the weakest will be hit three times over: by rising costs, by drastic cuts to programs they rely on, and by the collapse of individual support for charities that help the hungry, the homeless, the sick, refugees and others in need."

In the CBN interview that aired last week, Ryan highlighted an additional principle of Catholic social teaching that informs his engagement in public policy: the principle of subsidiarity.

Subsidiarity holds that decisions are best made at the most local level available. As Ryan noted, when applied to political authority, this means federalism (the principle of states sharing power with federal government). Subsidiarity also holds that larger, more powerful institutions should refrain from undermining the freedom and integrity of smaller, less powerful ones. This is the aspect of the principle that Ryan picked up on most pointedly:

[Subsidiarity means] not having big government crowd out civic society, but...having enough space in our communities so that we can interact with each other, and take care of people who are down and out in our communities.

This principle arises out of a larger vision of social flourishing, one in which the common good is advanced "through our civic organizations, through our churches, through our charities, through all of our different groups where we interact with people as a community."

Ryan has been attacked by those who hold a different view of government's relationship to social well-being. His critics, including President Barack Obama, seem to prefer that Washington play a more direct, comprehensive role in pursuing the common good, even at the expense of civil society organizations that are often better equipped to serve people in need.

Some have tried to make the budget debate a conflict between those who do or do not care about the poor. But at its heart, this debate is about two contrasting visions of government's proper role-in relation to prosperity, the common good, and to other institutions in society.

Ryan has reminded Americans in general-and people of faith in particular-of a principle that deserves more attention in budget discussions. The morality of a budget cannot be evaluated solely in terms of government welfare spending; it must also consider effects to the long-term well-being of the poor, the financial viability of the nation, and the freedom of other social institutions.

These criteria inform The Heritage Foundation's own proposal for addressing the debt crises, called Saving the American Dream.

A federal budget that continues to promote the same unsatisfactory programs and accumulate unsustainable debt-while crowding out smaller institutions of society-is neither moral nor helpful to the poor.

Heritage Fix Health Care Policy 

Obamacare's 10 Most Expensive Taxes and Fees

This Tuesday was tax day, serving as a special reminder of how big the federal government has become. As Heritage has warned before, Obamacare is on track to makes things a lot worse.

A new study by the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) revealed today that Obamacare will impose higher taxes totaling $4 trillion between now and 2035, with substantial hits on working Americans. That works out to more than $1.7 trillion over a decade-more than triple the original 10-year score.

Below is a list of Obamacare's most costly taxes and fees, drawn from research by Heritage tax policy expert Curtis Dubay:

  1. Hospital Insurance Tax. Beginning in 2013, Obamacare increases the Hospital Insurance (HI) portion of the payroll tax from 2.9 percent to 3.8 percent for families earning more than $250,000 a year and for single filers earning more than $200,000 annually. The increased HI tax is also applied to investment income for the first time. The 3.8 percent surtax on investment income is the most economically damaging tax in Obamacare. And these tax increases won't remain just on families making more than $250,000 a year for long. As the JEC explains, this tax is not indexed to inflation: "This means that in just 10 years from now, the so-called 'high-income' thresholds will have effectively ratcheted down to $152,000 and $190,000 in today's dollars." This tax increase amounts to $210 billion between 2013 and 2019.
  2. Mandate Penalties. In 2014, Obamacare's individual and employer mandates go into effect, forcing individuals to purchase coverage and employers to offer coverage to their workers. The penalties paid in association with these mandates are an estimated $65 billion between 2014 and 2019.
  3. Health Insurance Provider Fee. Starting in 2014, Obamacare imposes an annual fee on health insurance providers based on each company's share of the total market. This totals a $60 billion tax hike between 2014 and 2019.

Meese Makes Case Against Overcriminalization at Seton Hall Law

"In a democratic republic, government must perform its public safety functions within a framework of liberty and justice," said Former Attorney General Ed Meese. There is some risk that this morning's meditation on Social Darwinism might become another multi-part tutorial from me, if you can stand it.  A gimlet-eyed reader points me to the biology textbook, A Civic Biology: Presented in the Problems, used by the infamous John Scopes, of monkey trial fame, which includes these fine passages:

Improvement of Man. - If the stock of domesticated animals can be improved, it is not unfair to ask if the health and vigor of the future generations of men and women on the earth might be improved by applying to them the laws of selection. This improvement of the future race has a number of factors in which as individuals may play a part. These are personal hygiene, selection of healthy mates, and the betterment of the environment.

Eugenics. - When people marry there are certain things that the individual as well as the race should demand. The most important of these is freedom from germ diseases which might be handed down to the offspring. Tuberculosis, syphilis, that dread disease which cripples and kills hundreds of thousands of innocent children, epilepsy, and feeble-mindedness are handicaps which it is not only unfair but criminal to hand down to posterity. The science of being well born is called eugenics.

The Jukes. - Studies have been made on a number of different families in this country, in which mental and moral defects were present in one or both of the original parents. The "Jukes" family is a notorious example. The first mother is known as "Margaret, the mother of criminals." In seventy-five years the progeny of the original generation has cost the state of New York over a million and a quarter dollars, besides giving over to the care of prisons and asylums considerably over a hundred feeble-minded, alcoholic, immoral, or criminal persons. Another case recently studied is the "Kallikak" family. This family has been traced back to the War of the Revolution, when a young soldier named Martin Kallikak seduced a feeble-minded girl. She had a feeble-minded son from whom there have been to the present time 480 descendants. Of these 33 were sexually immoral, 24 confirmed drunkards, 3 epileptics, and 143 feeble-minded. The man who started this terrible line of immorality and feeble-mindedness later married a normal Quaker girl. From this couple a line of 496 descendants have come, with no cases of feeble-mindedness. The evidence and the moral speak for themselves!

Parasitism and its Cost to Society. - Hundreds of families such as those described above exist to-day, spreading disease, immorality, and crime to all parts of this country. The cost to society of such families is very severe. Just as certain animals or plants become parasitic on other plants or animals, these families have become parasitic on society. They not only do harm to others by corrupting, stealing, or spreading disease, but they are actually protected and cared for by the state out of public money. Largely for them the poorhouse and the asylum exist. They take from society, but they give nothing in return. They are true parasites.

The Remedy. - If such people were lower animals, we would probably kill them off to prevent them from spreading. Humanity will not allow this, but we do have the remedy of separating the sexes in asylums or other places and in various ways preventing intermarriage and the possibilities of perpetuating such a low and degenerate race. Remedies of this sort have been tried successfully in Europe and are now meeting with success in this country.

Hmm.  Maybe William Jennings Bryan had a point after all.

Think this is all dead?  Hah!  The climateers are talking about genetically engineering human beings to adapt to climate change.  (And they think geoengineering ideas are wacky??)  Who's to say you can't genetically engineer humans to be more liberal while you're at it?  Aldous Huxley, call your office.

 

We Aren't As Bad As the Other Guys!

They can't defend their records-either the Obama administration's or the Democratic Senate's-and they can't talk about the economy. They can't brag up their achievements, because they don't have any. So their campaign will come down to: at least we aren't those dreaded Republicans! Not exactly inspiring, but I suppose the Democrats' base will find the theme persuasive.

Best Buy: TV's, computers and Hamas

Marc Fink reports at the Middle East Forum's Islamist Watch that Best Buy contributed as a Platinum sponsor to the annual banquet of CAIR's Minnesota chapter this past February. Best Buy maintains its corporate headquarters in suburban Minneapolis, so this story hits close to home. The company is dealing with a few other public relations issues deriving from the its executive leadership and business struggles, so this story has flown under the radar.

The featured speaker at CAIR Minnesota's annual banquet, incidentally, was Feisal Abdul Rauf, best known as the guy who was leading the efforts to build the 13-story Islamic community center Park51 (the Ground Zero Mosque) two blocks from Ground Zero in lower Manhattan.

What's wrong with funneling money to an organization that holds itself out as a "civil rights group"? Isn't it a worthy object of corporate philanthropy? Well, no.

Readers will recall that the United States named CAIR an unindicted co-conspirator of the Holy Land Foundation, a fundraiser for Hamas that the government shut down in the aftermath of 9/11. I wrote about CAIR's identification as an unindicted co-conpirator of the HLF in "Coming clean about CAIR."

CAIR's roots lie in the Muslim Brotherhood and the Muslim Brotherhood's Hamas affiliate. See, e.g., chapter 8 of Andrew McCarthy's The Grand Jihad and Daniel Pipes's online bibliography "Getting to know the Council on American-Islamic Relations." At the Holy Land Foundation trial the government introduced testimony regarding CAIR's establishment as a front group to mislead the likes of Best Buy, though you have to be clueless to be falling for the act at this point.

 

Will the Real Social Darwinists Please Stand Up?

More than two weeks later I'm still snorting my morning coffee over President Obama's risible charge that the Ryan budget represents a return to "Social Darwinism," even though it would return us to the same level of spending as a proportion of GDP seen under that infamous Social Darwinist Bill Clinton.

Jonah Goldberg has a nice takedown of the nonsense of the matter in the Weekly Standard, drawn from his forthcoming book, The Tyranny of Cliches: How Liberals Cheat in the War of Ideas.  My own one sentence dismissal of this tired cliche is that Social Darwinism might be said to stand in relation to free market thought as McCarthyism stands in relation to anti-Communism.

There's much more to be said about this, including an aspect of this issue where I disagree to some extent with Jonah.  While he is correct that both Herbert Spencer and William Graham Sumner, the two most prominent purported "social Darwinists" of the late 19th century, don't really live up to the liberal cliche, it is nevertheless the case that Spencer and Sumner ironically prepared the way for the Progressive embrace of Darwinian ideas in political and social thought a generation later.  (Keep in mind that it was Woodrow Wilson who said that our constitutionalism should be "Darwinian" in character: behold, the birth of the "living Constitution.")  They did this by rejecting the Founding Era's philosophical doctrine of individual natural right, which became the cornerstone of Progressivism.  Sumner hated the Declaration of Independence, and explicitly embraced the John C. Calhoun and Stephen Douglas view Jefferson's handiwork.

"Before the tribunal of nature," Sumner wrote in his most memorable formulation, "a man has no more rights than a rattlesnake; he has no more right to liberty than any wild beast."  Spencer argued, following Bentham ("nonsense on stilts") that the idea of natural rights should be abandoned.

From Spencer and Sumner it was but a short step to the left-leaning Social Darwinism of thinkers like Lester Ward (author of Dynamic Sociology in the 1890s), who merely turned so-called Social Darwinism on its head an in support of what we would recognize today as the Progressive agenda.  And its cornerstone is a rejection of individual natural rights. From Ward:

Not until we have succeeded in banishing the metaphysical conception of abstract right, and taken down the unrealizable standards of an imaginary disinterestedness in action, shall we be prepared to discuss intelligently the conditions of man's progress conceived as capable of accomplishment by his own efforts. . .  It is here that the new science is destined to be strongly antagonized by the growth of erroneous ideas respecting liberty.  The so-called "abstract rights" of mankind must be denied if society is ever to become the arbiter of its own destiny.

Ward tried to invent a whole new form of government, which he called "sociocracy," which he admits is "quite distinct from democracy."  Hard to tell it from modern therapeutic liberalism though.

But if you really want a coffee-snorting laugh, check out a section of Dynamic Sociology entitled "The Superiority of Government Over Private Administration of Public Concerns," where Ward argued:

Nearly every present acknowledged function of government has once been intrusted to private enterprise . . . Now, of all the enterprises which the state has thus appropriated to itself, there is not one which it has not managed better and more wisely than it had been managed before by private parties. . . The superiority of governmental administration over private management, in large enterprises of a general public character, has been clearly seen and frequently pointed out . . .  It might similarly be shown that all the functions of government are usually performed with far greater thoroughness and fidelity than similar functions intrusted to private individuals.
