The Quote of the Decade:

C'mon Baby Gimme One More Chance

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America 's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America 's debt weakens us domestically and internationally."

"Leadership means that, "the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

~ Senator Barack H. Obama, March 2006

Obama Can Now Control Food, Energy, Health Resources... At Any Time

April 16, 2012

Did you know that the federal government claims that it can take away your constitutional rights any time that it wants to? Over the past several decades, there have been an endless parade of laws and executive orders that have been slowly and methodically carving up our rights under the U.S. Constitution. Most Americans are not even aware of the "creeping totalitarianism" that is happening. Most Americans just trust the "authorities" when they tell us that certain things "must be done" in order to keep us all safe. But even if we gave up all of our privacy, even if we gave up all of our liberties and our freedoms, and even if we gave the government all of our stuff they still would not be able to keep us safe. It is inevitable that evil people are going to do evil things, and if you are counting on the Obama administration to keep you safe then you are being delusional. Obama is not going to save us from anything. But Obama will gladly take away our rights and our freedoms if the American people allow him to. The Obama administration seems to have an endless lust for more power. Sadly, if we do give away our rights it will have some very serious consequences.

An executive order that Barack Obama signed the other day is making headlines all over the nation. The title of the executive order is "National Defense Resources Preparedness" and it is actually an update of a series of previous executive orders.

In observing the OCCUPY activities over the past year or so, I surmised that their "first wave" was designed to serve as their learning curve, and that their puppet masters would then deploy them to mount "Wave Two", creating new and more vehement outrages, building on their experience.

That's now coming to pass.

Please relay this to other Tea Parties.

Lou Flanagan
The General Wayne Tea Party

From a reliable source:

1, Training for OCCUPY members & supporters was conducted around the U.S. this past weekend. We know of this because some Tea Party members infiltrated some training meetings and reported what they've learned.

2. The training was conducted in cities, towns and even smaller communities. Every trainer was equipped with a DVD, handouts and a training manual, and urged to recruit others.

3. The training included specific instructions to attend Tea Party activities - meetings, rallies and town halls

3. At such Tea Party events, they were instructed to  instigate confrontations and disruption. My source added, '... remember that they are well trained, well funded, extremely well organized and directed.  This is no longer the ragtag bunch of fools who are clueless about what they are there for - they are still ragtag but now they have marching orders and each group will have an even better trained leader(s)".

4. My source also said, "...the OCCUPY movement has gone from semi-organic to fully supported and organized - and as I wrote before (and provided the links to prove this) - they are backed by the Communist and Socialist parties, UAW, SEIU, ACORN, myriad other communist/socialist organizations, Moveon.org, and of course, one of the key money people is George Soros.  This collection of 'sponsors' has no good intentions; moreover they are providing tents, food, water, sleeping bags, entertainment, drugs and more.  And they have insider's in key roles of leaders to incite and whip these people into a frenzy".

5. How should Tea Party members handle any "situations"? My suggestions:

    1. For your upcoming events, contact your local law enforcement chief well in advance and appraise him or her of your concerns.
    2. Share this heads up with your news media - print and broadcast outlets - in advance. Do not wait until stuff happens.
    3. Ask your members to have the phone number of the local law enforcement people on their speed dial
    4. Ask members to bring a video camera with sound
3..At our weekly sidewalk rallies, I'll call the police first, but if things look bad, I'll instruct my members to leave as soon as something starts. There's no use in engaging in a dispute with them because they will escalate it.
4.If they crash a meeting, call the police. Police have a handy thing in their toolkit called, "Inciting to riot" which around here is good for thirty days in the slammer.

6. One purpose of their disruptions will be to create "news", in which your Tea Party appears in headlines about violence or disturbances. The other purpose is the disruption itself.

7. Be aware that the date May 1st, May Day, is a traditional big day with lefties of all types, who know it as "International Workers Day".   I've seen a separate report that OCCUPY is planning "something big" for that date, but I have no other confirmation about it.

    Regards,
    Lou

Voter's Guide - Urgent information

April 12, 2012

Dear Patriots,

As a businessman, father and grandfather I believe that we have reached a historic crossroad where we have been forced to either fight for a serious change in direction or suffer the loss of what we currently hold dear.  Unfortunately, most persons have been convinced that they should do very little or nothing at all.

I was recently at the Pennsylvania Leadership Conference where a very stark revelation was made clear.  A question was asked of the 700 plus people in the auditorium:  "How many persons here believe that you have had it better than your parents?"   I believe that everyone raised their hand.  The speaker then asked "How many of you believe that your children will have it as good as you?"  Every hand went down.

Personally, I believe along with many others that we are in very serious trouble.  We are a very short distance from the rioting in the streets as we see in countries like Greece.  Our politicians are not seriously addressing the problems.  They continue to bribe the American public with money that is not theirs.

This overspending is not only dishonest and unethical; it is immoral and must be stopped if we have any real hope for our children and grandchildren.

Please take the time to review the voter's guide at the link provided.  You will see that there is only one candidate for US Senate who we can really count on to stand firm against the establishment pressure for "spending as usual."  The other candidates may be a help, but we do not know for certain how they will eventually vote on important issues and we honestly think they will compromise on many fronts.

Churches have every right to make this information available in bulk to the congregation and the general public.  They are not allowed to tell persons who to vote for, but they can tell everyone that there is a voting guide available for the Primary Election and challenge people to do their part.

Please get involved by distributing this Voter's Guide to as many persons as possible, especially at the polls on April 24.  Do not let this opportunity escape us.

Sincerely Yours,

David M. Nyce

Free Market Feminism: Why Capitalism is GREAT for Women

When: Wednesday, April 18th; 7-9 PM

Where:
Temple University Student Center 200C

ENTRANCE to Student Center South is on 13th between Cecil B. Moore and Montgomery Aves.

Come out and join TUSIF in listening to Jennifer Stefano, Pennsylvania State Director of Americans for Prosperity, speak about why capitalism benefits women more than any other economic system.

Women's Rights, at every level, are inextricably woven into the fabric of ev
erything that makes America a strong nation, socially, in business, and politically. Join us to advance women in the moot climate of Obama anti American policies.

What is this event about?

There's a war on women being waged and the leader is America's Commander in Chief. President Barack Obama's economic policies are harming women (and men and children too) and killing their prospects for a better life. Learn about how capitalism and the promotion of free markets, limited government and constitutional principles is the best way for women to advance economically and politically.

Who is Jennifer Stefano?

Jennifer Stefano is the state director of Americans for Prosperity Pennsylvania and a regular guest on Fox News and Fox Business News. She her articles and quotes on free markets, capitalism and limited government have appeared in the The New York Times, The Washington Post, Investors Business Daily and the International Herald Tribune as well as other national and local publications. Her work as a political activist was documented in the book, "Boiling Mad: Inside Tea Party America" by Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times Reporter Kate Zernike.

What is Americans for Prosperity?

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is committed to educating citizens about economic policy and mobilizing those citizens as advocates in the public policy process. AFP is an organization of grassroots leaders who engage citizens in the name of limited government and free markets on the local, state, and federal levels. The grassroots activists of AFP advocate for public policies that champion the principles of entrepreneurship and fiscal and regulatory restraint.

Let's WIN this together !

Thank you Jeff and Brenda Ney for this fantastic explanation!   For those of you who have asked how you can respond to people about the negative attack ads against Sam, this is information that my husband put together. I hope it helps you as you interact with people both before and on election day.

1. The pay raise vote was
NOT unconstitutional. The vote was COMPLETELY within the law. This charge by Smith is a BALD FACE LIE!. The part that was unconstitutional was the action of the State House leadership AFTER the vote, when they tried to take the raise in the same year it was enacted. They also added in an increase in unvouchered expense reimbursement also to be taken in the same year. The State Constitution only allows an increase in benefits to take place after next election cycle, to allow voters the choice of removing those that would vote for an increase in benefits.

With that being said, Sam was one of a handful of ethical legislators that fought to
REPEAL the newly enacted law, and they were successful with, Ed Rendell signing the repeal on November 16, 2005.    Bottom line SAM NEVER TOOK THE PAY RAISE OR ANY INCREASE IN PER DIEM EXPENSES! PERIOD!

2. The Pension issue. While Sam voted way back in 2001 to increase state pensions, he did so based on faulty, untruthful projection numbers given by Governor Ridge at the time. It as not
MASSIVE. It totaled about 17%. He also apogized for his vote in many public forum owning up to his mistake.     SEND THEM THIS LINK
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/regional/s_664066.html

3. 'Billed Taxpayers over $14,000 in 'personal expenses'.

First of all, they are
NOT personal expenses. The State House has a LAWFUL per diem reimbursement for expenses while conducting State business on State time. The lawmakers do not 'bill' the state for their expenses, they fill out an expense report like everyone does in business. Rohrer has been consistently in the bottom 5% for the use of these monies. A fact this hit piece fails to acknowledge. After numerous Google searches, I was unable to find the article referenced in the hit piece.

Lastly, you can tell people that these false advertisements show the true character of a candidate. Tell them if Smith is lying to you now, how can you ever trust him to tell the truth once in office. You might also tell them he is spending over $250,000 a year on the political consultants that help him put together these hit pieces and that he is voted in 19 straight Democratic primaries for Democratic candidates before turning Republican.

It's easy to attack the record of another when you have
NO VOTING RECORD YOURSELF!!!
I hope this helped you.

George W. Bush to speak in Pennsylvania on GOP presidential primary day

Former President George W. Bush will deliver a speech in Pennsylvania on the day of the state's GOP presidential primary. Bush is the only prominent politician in his family that has not made an endorsement in the 2012 presidential race.

Bush will give the keynote address at the Plumstead Christian School's annual "Founders Forum" on the Calvary Church's campus in Souderton, according to the school's official website.

His father, former President George H. W. Bush is the most recent member of the Bush family to endorse former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for president.

Bush reportedly asked Romney if his son had endorsed him for president yet.

"I haven't met with President George W. Bush," Romney said. "We speak from time to time."

Barbara Bush, his wife, replied, "We'll talk about that."

Dr. Larry P. Arnn
Dr. Larry P. Arnn

Over the years, many friends of Hillsdale, those who never attended college here, have said to me: "Dr. Arnn, I wish I could take Hillsdale's Constitution course!"

In response to these requests, this past year, for the first time ever, Hillsdale College offered the "Introduction to the Constitution" lecture series at no charge. Frankly, I wasn't sure what sort of a response a course like this would have.

That's why I was excited to see that YOU and almost 200,000 other people from all over the United States registered for "Introduction to the Constitution."

Thank you very much for registering and participating. I hope you learned a lot from the series.

I was thrilled, not only by the response, but at what it indicates: Americans are willing and eager learn about the Constitution and to defend the principles of liberty that made America so prosperous!

And this re-awakening of national interest in the Constitution comes not a minute too soon.

Now, for the first time ever, Hillsdale College is offering a no-cost 10-week online Constitution course based on the class Hillsdale College students must complete for graduation:

"Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution"

This course on the U.S. Constitution is available online at no charge to anyone who wants to understand and defend the timeless principles of liberty upon which our nation was founded!

I am proud to be teaching part of our NEW "Constitution 101" course and hope YOU will be one of my students again!

Hillsdale College"Constitution 101" begins on February 20, 2012, and concludes the week of April 30. It will cover such topics as the Declaration of Independence and its connection to the Constitution, how the Constitution is structured to protect individual liberty and ensure good government, the crisis of constitutional government faced by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, and modern challenges to the Constitution during the "Progressive" era.

It is my honor to teach the first class, "The American Mind," and the final class, "The Recovery of the Constitution." All of the classes will be taught by Hillsdale College professors - the top teachers in their field and the same ones who instruct our students here on Hillsdale's campus.

Featuring 113 primary source documents, The U.S. Constitution: A Reader was developed for teaching the core course on the U.S. Constitution at Hillsdale College.

Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.

Editorial Note: Just received a couple of copies of the reader.   Not just a short course pamphlet this; with the heft of 'Atlas Shrugged', it is well worth getting whether or not you choose to take the course.

About Hillsdale College

Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."

Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs.

Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012.

About John Stossel

John Stossel joined Fox Business Network (FBN) in 2009. He hosts "Stossel," a weekly program highlighting current consumer issues with a libertarian viewpoint, which debuted. His first shows covered health care, global warming, the novel Atlas Shrugged, "food police", and the Road to Serfdom.

Prior to joining FBN, Stossel co-anchored ABC's prime-time news magazine show, 20/20. There he contributed in-depth special reports and recurring segments on a variety of consumer topics, from pop culture to government and business.

John Stossel's new book, "No, They Can't: Why Government Fails-but Individuals Succeed,"argues: "There ought not to be a law." Stossel explains how politicians promise to solve problems by passing laws, but the laws invariably make our problems worse.

Why don't we learn? Because our brains don't intuit well about complex situations. After thousands of years of taking orders from tribal elders, after years of obeying our parents, we are programmed to think that anytime there is a problem, whether it's companies going bankrupt or schools keeping kids stupid, government action is the way to solve it. Using his decades of reporting, Stossel tackles how those intuitive, knee-jerk reactions lead us astray.

Central planning sounds right. It feels good. But it has nothing to do with the realities of economics and science. There is nothing that government can do that we cannot do better as free individuals - and as groups of individuals, working together voluntarily, not at the point of a gun or under threat of a fine.

We're going to Washington, D.C. to stand with Israel

From July 16 through July 18, 2012, Christians United for Israel will be holding its 7th Annual Washington Summit. We're going back to stand with Israel in our nation's capital. This year - more than ever - we need you to join us!

In the coming months, critical decisions are going to be made about Iran, Israel and the world. Finally, Washington is beginning to focus on the issue of a nuclear Iran. Many of our leaders want to confront this looming threat. But others want to keep kicking the can down the road. The debate is far from over.

  • We know that when thousands of CUFI activists arrive in DC and on Capitol Hill, we can change the conversation.
  • We can remind our leaders that a nuclear Iran is not only a threat to Israel, but to the US as well. And we can demonstrate to our elected officials that their constituents care enough about this issue to show up at their DC offices.
  • We know that we can create a sense of immediacy that's otherwise lacking.
  • We know that the more of us who show up and speak out -- the louder our voice and the greater our impact.

We stand at a critical juncture in history. Don't be silent! Don't miss your chance to make a difference! Don't pass up your opportunity to defend America and bless Israel!

Our leaders need to remember that we are watching them and we need to remember that God is watching us.

The time to speak out for Israel is now!
Please register today for CUFI's 2012 DC Summit.

A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress

Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:

  • Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
  • Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
  • Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care

The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

Patriot Action Network

Patriot Action Network

We are the Tea Party

On Thursday, our staff finalized the most explosive resource that Grassfire has ever published. It's called 69 Obama Lies. It's a Fantastic Resource for this election year!

I believe 69 Obama Lies is the most thorough "vetting" of Obama's actual words in print. And I know it is going to outrage the Left because we actually hold Obama accountable for what he said!

69 Obama Lies

Dear Patriot,

About six weeks ago, our staff set out with the goal of putting the "truth detector" to what Obama has actually said. What we realized is Obama has lied so pervasively and thoroughly that even our staff had forgotten many of his most outrageous fibs! That's when we realized we had to create a written record of the Obama Lies.

When we finished, we had created a 122-page, 20,000-word dossier that documents a disturbing cross-section of fibs, falsehoods, and fabrications that our President has used to win votes while implementing his radical agenda. Go here to see a larger image of the cover and the full list of 69 Obama Lies we have documented:

http://www.grassfire.com/24098/offer.asp?Ref_ID=600013

+ + The Lies that got Obama elected...

69 Obama Lies is organized in six sections that cover everything from the lies Obama has told about himself (we call these "ObamaLies"), to his campaign lies, his lies about government and taxes, ObamaCare and domestic and foreign policy.

They are all here -- and footnoted so you will have complete documentation. We start with the ObamaLies -- his denial of Rev. Wright.... the "normalcy" of his church... the Bill Ayers lie... the ACORN lie... and Obama's "Brother's Keeper" lie which exposes his Marxist core.

Let's be clear -- it was these  "ObamaLies" along with his campaign lies that got Obama elected in the first place. Obama's ability to cloak his real beliefs and his real associations (with the willing help of the liberal media) kept his campaign moving forward.

But we don't stop there....

+ + Obama's "Big Government" Lies

69 Obama Lies also tracks the BIG LIE that Obama sold to the American people just after Inauguration Day -- that massive deficit spending would "create and save" jobs and restore the economy.

It was all a LIE. We know that now. But it is vitally important to have the facts laid out in an orderly fashion. That's precisely what 69 Obama Lies does. We expose the full range of Obama's Big Government lies...

The "Create Or Save Jobs" Lie...

The Stimulus Law is Working" Lie...

The "I'll Cut The Deficit" Lie...

The "Government Motors" Lie...

The "Cash for Clunkers" Lie...

The "Rich Pay Less In Taxes" Lie...

+ + Border Lies, ObamaCare Lies... Energy Lies...

69 Obama Lies literally covers every aspect of Obama's presidency -- from his lies about border security and immigration to his lies about gas prices and green jobs.

We saved a whole section for Obama's signature legislative "achievement" -- ObamaCare. We've identified a Baker's Dozen of fibs Obama told just to get ObamaCare passed.

And please note that each of the 69 Obama Lies is like a mini research report -- clearly laying out the specific Obama lie and fully documenting our sources.

You get the actual words of Obama set against the truth -- the LIE next to the reality check. Go here to request your copies and see the complete list of 69 Lies:

Five Republicans battle in April primary to oppose Sen. Casey in fall

April 8, 2012 4:44 pm
1/7
U.S. Senator Bob Casey

WASHINGTON -- Everyone, it seems, wants Bob Casey's job.

Who wouldn't? The U.S. senator from Pennsylvania has one of Washington's most sought-after offices outside the White House.

His third-floor space in the Russell Senate Office Building was once occupied by the young Sen. John F. Kennedy. Four 8-by-10 shots on the wall show that Mr. Kennedy's desk was in the spot now reserved for office visitors who perch on a yellow couch to meet with Mr. Casey.

The office space, though, doesn't go with the job. Offices are assigned by seniority. Mr. Casey got the coveted spot when its prior occupant, Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., took over Joe Biden's office when the Delaware senator became vice president.

That's something Steve Welch, Tom Smith, Sam Rohrer, Marc Scaringi, David Christian and Joe Vodvarka ought to know.

The five Republicans and one Democrat -- Mr. Vodvarka -- are on the ballot to unseat the one-term U.S. senator from Scranton. John Kensinger wants a shot, too. The Bedford County pharmacist is running as a write-in candidate after failing to collect enough signatures to appear on the Republican primary ballot.

Recent polls show no clear frontrunner in the Republican contest, but indicate that Mr. Casey would beat any of them if the general election were held today.

A Grim Future for Tax Day

by Sondra Clark

Today is is Tax Day, when Americans hand over their hard earned money to Uncle Sam. Today is also Tax Freedom Day, the day when Americans earn just enough money to pay off the federal, state and local tax bill.

The Heritage Foundation's Mike Brownfield elaborates:

"For the first 111 days of the year, everything you earned went straight to Uncle Sam. Compare that to back in 1900, when Americans paid only 5.9% of their income in taxes and Tax Freedom Day came on January 22."

Each year, it takes hard working Americans longer and longer to earn enough money to pay their share of taxes. And the future is grim.

In January of 2013, Americans will be hit with waves of expiring tax cuts, which will lead to a crippling $494 billion tax hike known as Taxmageddon. If Congress fails to act, Heritage's Curtis Dubay reports, "American households can expect to face an average tax increase of $3,800 and that 70 percent of Taxmageddon's impact will fall directly on low-income and middle-income families, leaving them with $346 billion less to spend"

How do you think Congress should address our ever rising tax rates?

"I enjoy challenging conventional wisdom," Heritage Foundation scholar Diane Katz says.

And she does that by exposing how big-government regulations and red tape intrude in our lives and stifle the economy. She tracks rules and laws that have significant effects, like Obamacare, and analyzes their effects on the economy and our freedoms.

As she puts it:

"A large part of what we do is educating the public and lawmakers. Regulation is not really understood, and it has such an enormous impact. I believe it is important to reveal and expose the role of regulation in the economy and in our lives. It is not just an economic issue but an issue of liberty.

My work is focused on improving regulatory policy. Agencies and bureaucrats wield too much discretionary power while Congress dodges accountability for the poorly drafted statutes that set the agencies loose."

As America turns its attention towards the election in November, candidates are turning their attention to a key voting block: Americans citizens of Hispanic descent.

In the 2008 election, 9.7 million Hispanics voted. Estimates for the 2012 election suggest that number could grow to 11.8 million.

President Obama has a history of actively courting the Hispanic vote. This key group, however, has been some of the hardest hit by his economic policies.

The Heritage Foundation's Mike Brownfield explains:

From 2005 to 2009, median household wealth among Hispanics fell by 66%, compared with a drop of 53% among blacks and 16% among non-Hispanic whites; the unemployment rate among Hispanics in March was 10.3 percent, compared to 8.2 percent among the broader population; and between 2006 and 2010, the poverty rate among Hispanics increased more than any other group, from 20.6 percent to 26.6 percent, all according to the Pew Hispanic Center.

The Heritage Foundation understands the importance of the Hispanic community and recently launched a Spanish-language website, Libertad.org, to communicates Heritage's conservative policy analysis to those whose first language is Spanish.

"Its goal," Brownfield elaborates, "is to educate a growing community about conservative ideals and how limited government - not big government - can help them achieve the American dream."

Morning Bell: What Tax Day Could Feel Like in 2013

In addition to today being Tax Day, it's also, coincidentally, "Tax Freedom Day" - meaning that it has taken from January 1 until now for Americans to earn enough money to pay this year's federal, state, and local tax bill - 29.2% of all our income. In other words, for the first 111 days of the year, everything you earned went straight to Uncle Sam. Compare that to back in 1900, when Americans paid only 5.9% of their income in taxes and Tax Freedom Day came on January 22.

The Tax Foundation reports that because of higher federal income and corporate tax collections, Tax Freedom Day came four days later this year than last. And the bad news is that unless Washington takes action, it will take working Americans 11 more days to meet next year's tax burden.

That's all due to Taxmageddon - a slew of expiring tax cuts and new tax increases that will hit Americans on January 1, 2013, amounting to a $494 billion tax hike. Heritage's Curtis Dubay reports that American households can expect to face an average tax increase of $3,800 and that 70 percent of Taxmageddon's impact will fall directly on low-income and middle-income families, leaving them with $346 billion less to spend. Dubay explains some of the immediate impacts:

RedState

RedState Morning Briefing

For April 18, 2012

1. War on Dogs?

If you're just tuning in, Ann Romney says that the Romney family dog liked riding on the roof of their car. The dog cage, Romney supporters say, had a windshield or something.

The left has had a field day with this. But then the Romney campaign struck back. Barack Obama is a dog eater. Well, he was as a boy. The weed and cocaine tries were in high school and college. Eating dog was in his youth. Calm down left-wing people upset with me for daring to mention any of this. All are documented in his autobiography, Dreams of my Father. Autobiography means he kind of sort of spilled the beans himself.

This caused a stir on twitter with conservatives participating in a twitter hashtag game: #ObamaDogRecipes. My personal contributions were Escar-Bo and Bo Mein. I was pretty fond of Hound Cake and German Shepard Pie too.

You'd think we'd have dealt with all of this on both sides four years ago, but alas the media didn't really want to aggressively vet Barack Obama in 2008 and Mitt Romney didn't make it past March.

Perhaps there is a war on dogs. One thing I am certain of is that there is a war on levity.

2. WI-GOV Recall Democrats running on... property tax hikes?

If states are really the laboratories of democracy, then apparently Wisconsin is the place where all the mad scientists go to cook up the latest abomination of science with which to terrify the populace. And one case in point is the way that the Democratic party in Wisconsin has decided to run with the novel platform of explicitly offering to raise other people's taxes in order to maintain certain Democratic cronies' current-but-threatened standard of living.

I simply cannot come up with a sarcastic comment worthy of that particular brainstorm. Sorry.

3. For Some Republicans, Free Markets are Gone With the Wind

One of the most appalling features of Obama's presidency is the expansion of green venture socialism on behalf of corporate cronies who helped finance his campaign. Obama's use of stimulus funds to distort the energy market with subsidies and loans to unprofitable solar energy companies has become the hallmark of his presidency, and it has theoretically provided us with a potent political weapon. Yet for some reason a bunch of Republicans - many of whom reside in red states - are doing the same thing on behalf of Big Wind. Has anyone explained why picking Solar as a winner is liberal, while picking Wind is conservative?

In the House, there are 20 cosponsors of a bill (H.R. 3307) to extend the refundable 2.2 cent/per kilowatt-hour Production Tax Credit (PTC) for wind companies, most of which generate little revenue and pay no taxes. While we should never emulate the Democrats and support government preferences for green energy, it is even more insane given that we have already pumped in billions to the wind industry, yet it has still failed to stand on its own merits. In fact, a new report shows that they lost 9,000 jobs in 2009.

Paving the Coptic Way to Jerusalem   Apr 17, 2012 10:00 am

Late last week Egyptian Copts in Cairo booked private airline flights to Jerusalem to celebrate Easter holy week.

Soon after, the joy they anticipated turned to anger when they faced rejection by a Coptic priest at the door of Jerusalem's Saint Helena Chapel on Coptic Palm Sunday.

This unlikely denial is understood only by comprehending the unlikelihood of the trip, for it was the first of its kind (a direct flight from Cairo airport to Ben Gurion airport) since the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty of 1979 signed by Sadat.

Unfortunately, for Egyptian Copts, the intervention of an edict issued by their Pope Shenouda III in the same year known as, "the law that forbids Copts to travel to Jerusalem," superseded the peace treaty.

Turkey's Strategy   Apr 17, 2012 09:56 am

Turkey is re-emerging as a significant regional power. In some sense, it is in the process of returning to its position prior to World War I when it was the seat of the Ottoman Empire. But while the Ottoman parallel has superficial value in understanding the situation, it fails to take into account changes in how the global system and the region work. Therefore, to understand Turkish strategy, we need to understand the circumstances it finds itself in today.

Fellow Panthers distributed wanted posters calling Zimmerman a "child killer" and offering that bounty "dead or alive." Israel 50 Years From Now

Last month I appeared at an event organized by the Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and the David Horowitz Freedom Center on the topic of "Israel in 50 Years" that explores how Israel will make it to 50 years from now. Below you can read some adapted excerpts from my talk and see the video of the remarks.

Sultan Knish (Daniel Greenfield) paints Israel in 50 years from CJHS on Vimeo.

Before we begin, let me tell you a little about myself. I'm pro-Israel.

Now these days there's all sorts of debate about what pro-Israel means. Is Obama's pro-Israel? Is J-Street pro-Israel? Is Arafat's ghost pro-Israel?

There are two kinds of pro-Israel. There's the old-fashioned kind of pro-Israel people who think that Israel should survive and defend itself. And the new kind of pro-Israel who think that it shouldn't.

I'm the old fashioned-kind of pro-Israel. I think it should survive. And now let's discuss how it might do that.

Let's begin with the crisis that is most on our minds. The bomb.

It took quite a while until the Soviet Union was able to store up enough intercontinental ballistic missiles to be able to wipe out the United States. It will take a lot less time until Iran has the capability to wipe out the State of Israel. One reason for this is Israel's population density.

Israel is not only small; it's smaller than all but three American states, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island, it's also very densely populated. Israel has the 37th largest population density in the world. By comparison Japan, which has cubicle hotels, has the 32nd largest population density in the world. And if you eliminate islands, city states and principalities, then Israel has the 10th highest population density in the world. And it gets more claustrophobic from there.

About half of Israel's population is wedged into the Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area in about 600 square miles. That's not that much bigger than Los Angeles. (Imagine the Cold War if half of America had lived in Los Angeles.) Tel Aviv is one of the 50 most overpopulated cities in the world. If a nuclear attack happens it will be there and it will likely mean the end of Israel.

That's bad news, but it's not the entire roll of bad news. Iran is not the end of the story.

Egypt has a nuclear program, it has engaged in illegal enrichment. And the country is very close to falling into the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is every bit as fanatical when it comes to destroying Israel as Iranian leaders are.

Iran is important, but it's not the endgame. If Israel is around 50 years from now it will be living in a region where its enemies will have nuclear weapons. This is a reality. The question is how will Israel make it to that point?

To understand that let's pull back a little and examine the two categories of nuclear attack that Israel might face.

Khaled Abu Toameh: Why Is Jordan Keeping Out Palestinian Refugees?

By: Khaled Abu Toameh

More than 1,000 Palestinians who fled the violence in Syria and were hoping to find temporary shelter in Jordan, have been stranded along the border between Syria and Jordan for the past few weeks. The Jordanian authorities have thus far refused to allow them into the kingdom.

The Jordanian authorities have set up a makeshift refugee camp along the border with Syria, where the Palestinians are being held in tents, with poor sanitary conditions.

Jordan's treatment of Palestinian refugees is not uncommon for an Arab country. Lebanon and Egypt have also refused to grant asylum to the fleeing Palestinians. This is also not the first time that an Arab country keeps Palestinians waiting on the border. In the past, Palestinians have also been denied entry into Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Libya.

What do Jewish students need most? Courage

Entries by Jonathan S. Tobin
The last shot fired in the nasty combat being carried out on our nation's campuses took place at Florida Atlantic University, where a pro-Palestinian group posted mock "eviction" notices on dorm room doors that contained a laundry list of anti-Israel propaganda points. Their stated intent was to make students identify with the plight of displaced Palestinian Arabs and denied that Jewish students were particularly targeted for "eviction," a point that defenders of the action highlighted after the fact when the university was forced to apologize for approving the stunt.

But there's little doubt this incident, like many others that have taken place in other venues around the country, sought to both throw down a challenge and to intimidate pro-Israel students. As is often the case on campuses, the anti-Israel forces are louder and generally more willing to engage in confrontations. They also often have the backing of the faculty and Middle East Studies departments.

Though America remains a place where support for the Jewish state cuts across almost all political, religious and social boundaries, and academia is the exception to the rule. In the classrooms, Jewish students are sometimes forced to face off against not just other students but teachers. On campus common areas where "Israel is apartheid" exhibits are set up, they are subjected to other forms of harassment.

LIB-SPEAK V - A LEFTY-CON FOR THE AGE OF OBAMA
GrassTopsUSA Exclusive Commentary
By Don Feder
04/17/2012

This is the fifth installment in my series on liberal language manipulation.

Because the left controls the culture (including academia and the news media) it usually gets to define the terms of political debate. Liberal terminology comes with built-in assumptions. Catch phrases repeated by rote shape voters' perceptions on a wide range of issues. Only by debunking these clichés can we help the public to begin to think critically about the issues to which they relate.

Republican War On Women - This compliments the alleged Republican War on the Poor, the Republican War on the Middle Class, the Republican War on Minorities, and the Republican War on Disabled Widows and Homeless Orphans. According to the left, Republicans have sworn eternal enmity to every demographic - save geriatric billionaires whose wealth comes from strip mining and the sale of tobacco products.

Current charges of a GOP assault on the fair sex come from L'affaire Fluke.

Sandra Fluke is the third-year Georgetown Law student who, at a forum staged by Nancy Pelosi, demanded that the Catholic institution facilitate her sexual activity by providing her with contraceptives (through its student health plan), contravening Church doctrine. Because some Republicans stood up for freedom of religion, the party is said to be composed of misogynists who want to see women unshod, popping out babies in rapid succession and married to men in wife-beater shirts.

There is a war on women that's more than hyperbolic. Thanks to feminists, women enjoy much higher rates of divorce, poverty (due to female-headed households), addiction, mental illness and sexually transmitted diseases than three decades ago. Gender-selection abortion has extended the war on women to the womb.

The contempt for women who devote themselves to their families full-time is reflected in Hillary Rosen's sneering comment that Ann Romney (mother of five) "never worked a day in her life." Making a home isn't work. Raising children isn't work. Devising campaign strategies for the party of plunder - that's work.

There is a global war on women, reflected in polygamy, honor killings, genital mutilation and reducing women to the status of chattel. These are daily occurrences in the Muslim world, and in Muslim communities in the West, committed in the name of Islam. The left's response is to pretend it's not happening. For liberals to complain would call into question the premise that Islam is a benevolent belief system.

To top it off, the champions of womankind have savaged the economy, created chronic unemployment, pushed up the price of energy to record levels and ruined the home-mortgage market - making it harder for young families to own their own homes.

But if you're a single woman, soon to be earning a six-figure income, who wants to compel the Catholic Church to pay for your contraceptives - they've got you covered.

The 99% versus the 1% - Popularized by the Occupy Wall Street movement, this is classic Marxist class-warfare rhetoric.

In this scenario, the top 1% of wage earners are pitted against the bottom 99%. Republican policies are said to benefit the super-rich at the expense of the overwhelming majority. BTW, you don't have to be a billionaire or even a millionaire to make it in the 1-percenters club, just have an adjusted gross income of $343,927.

If the proverbial system is rigged for the upper-upper crust, why is it that in 2009, the top 1% earned 16.9% of income, but paid 36.73% of all Federal personal income taxes? (The top 5%, over $154,643 in AGI, paid a whopping 58.66% of income taxes.)

The dogma that the GOP is the party of the "haves" and the Democrats the party of the "have-nots" is refuted by reality. The super-rich - including Bill Gates, George Soros, Warren Buffett, Ted Turner, David Rockefeller and Oprah Winfrey - regularly give to leftwing causes, including Democrat campaigns.

Actor George Clooney will host a $40,000-a-plate Obama fundraiser at his 7,000+ square-foot Los Angeles home. There, the president will have another opportunity to profess his abiding affection for the middle class, at a function where donors will pay the equivalent of a middle-class salary for a year for a dinner of grass-fed beef and twice-baked potatoes. When the poor have cried, Obama hath hied himself to Martha's Vineyard for another vacation at an estate that rents for $50,000 a week.

According to Roll Call, of the 10 richest members of Congress in 2011, seven were Democrats, including Senators John Kerry (net worth: $193 million), Jay Rockefeller ($82 million), Mark Warner ($76 million), Frank Lautenberg ($55 million) and Dianne Feinstein ($45 million).

Apparently, the 1% are totally feckless when it comes to elections. In the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama got 52% of the vote of those with annual earnings over $200,000, against 46% for John McCain.

Despite what grubby materialists think, Americans rarely vote according to income (except for net tax-consumers), but are more likely to perceive their political interests based on ideology, religion or another factor.

Government often benefits the top 1%, but not in ways OWS imagines. Thanks to big government, ordinary Americans see their incomes taxed away or diminished by inflation, while the very rich often benefit from the subsidies distributed to favored businesses.

Out-of-Step With A Majority of Americans - This is one of the left's favorite ploys to foreclose debate. Thus, when actor Kirk Cameron said he didn't believe in same-sex marriage, and thought homosexual behavior was "detrimental and destructive," the Gay and Lesbian Advocates And Defenders shot back that Cameron is "out of step with a growing majority of Americans." Would those be the voters of 33 states which have passed defense-of-marriage amendments to their state constitutions?

Anyway, morality isn't determined by counting heads. Being in the majority doesn't confer a special moral status. Majorities are wrong as often as they're right. In the 1950s, most Americans either thought segregation was okay, or not worth getting worked up about.

You know who else was out-of-step with a majority of Americans of their day - George Washington (at the outset of the Revolution, only about 1/3 of colonists supported independence) and Abraham Lincoln, who only won a plurality of the vote in 1860. Throughout most of the 1930s, Winston Churchill was a lone voice warning against German rearmament and territorial ambition, shunned by his party and ignored by the British public.

The left uses the out-of-step argument very selectively. According to opinion surveys and referenda votes, liberals are out-of-touch with sizeable majorities on abortion, capital punishment, same-sex marriage, racial preferences, immigration reform, Obama-Care and closing the budget deficit with spending cuts instead of tax hikes.

It's a silly game, but what else do they have? If you can't make reasoned arguments, simply declare that the march of human progress, seen in ever-changing views of the majority, is on your side.

Excess Profits - "Excess" (too much) "profit" (return on investment). So, what's an excessive return on the investment a business makes to earn a profit - 10%, 25%, 100%? And based on what criteria, other than envy, greed or an opportunity to scapegoat?

If there is such a thing as excess profits, why not excess wages - especially in the public workforce? A recent analysis by two economists for the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that with salary and benefits, state and local workers are paid 10% to 21% more than those in the private sector doing comparable work. Another important distinction: Absent government interference, profits are set by the marketplace. The wages of public employees are determined by politicians vying for the support of their unions.

It's usually oil companies that are charged with making excess profits. By killing energy exploration and development, government drives up the price at the pump. Instead of admitting the role their policies have played, politicians blame oil companies which see their reserves increase in value.

In January, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (who does a fair imitation of Wesley Mouch) introduced legislation for a Reasonable Profits Board to determine when an oil company's profits are unreasonable. Upon such a finding, the Board would be authorized to tax away up to 100% of the so-called excess. The legislation, co-sponsored by five other Marxists, has yet to move. I've got a deal for them: They can siphon off energy companies' "excess profits," if executives of said companies get to set congressional salaries.

What about excess losses? The company that posts a 50% profit one year could be drowning in red ink the next?

Doing business in this country - trying to satisfy consumer demand and keep up with ever-changing technology, while fighting off the heavy hand of government - is risky at the best of times. If we penalize a corporation for earning too much, should we reward it for earning too little? But if we want rewards based on failure, why don't we urge corporations to close their doors and have their directors go into politics?

Independent Voters - The media regularly genuflect to this self-defined group, using them as a prod to drive Republican candidates leftward.

Especially after a contested primary, Republicans are warned that they must surrender the values they professed during the primary season or alienate independents, who are said to favor moderate (wishy-washy) positions.

Democrats are never subjected to similar advice. When was the last time you heard the drive-by media musing that if Democrats didn't abandon their radical redistributionist rhetoric or stop advocating extreme social policies (abortion as a euphemism for infanticide and transgendered bathrooms) they risked alienating independent voters? That's a rhetorical question.

Independent voters are reputed to be engaged, judicious and willing to suspend judgment until they've carefully weighed candidates' records and positions.

In reality, they usually fall into one of three groups: 1.Those who think the label carries with it an aura of open-mindedness and sagacity 2. Those so disgusted by both parties that they don't want to be identified with either - but usually vote for the candidates of one or the other and 3. Those who care so little about who will govern the nation that they put off making a decision until Election Day.

Self-congratulatory posturing or apathy accounts for the growing popularity of the label. In a May 2011 Pew Center survey, 36% of voters said they were independent. This equals a 70-year high reached in 1992.

If a Republican runs to the middle in a general election, he risks alienating his base, to pick up votes that may go to his opponent anyway.

Candidates who abandon (or modify) previously held positions for political advantage are self-professed liars.

Either they lied to primary voters, to one extent or another, to win the nomination - or they're lying now to general-election voters to win in November. Of course, with politicians there's always the possibility that they have no firm principles and thus lied on both occasions.

SCOTUS: Lower Court Must Decide Whether Jerusalem Part of Israel on Passports

This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published April 11, 2012 on Breitbart.com.

Federal courts will decide whether U.S. passports must declare Jerusalem part of Israel. In Zivotofsky v. Clinton, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a lower court's conclusion that this issue must be resolved in the political arena between President Obama and Congress.

American passports record "Place of Birth" as either "City, Nation" or "State, Nation." (For example, mine reads, "Indiana, U.S.A.") Because of the struggles involving Jerusalem in world politics, modern passports for Americans born in that city say only "Jerusalem" without identifying the nation in which Jerusalem is found. Then in 2002, Congress passed a law providing that Americans born in Israel can insist their passports list "Jerusalem, Israel."

Menachem Binyamin Zivotofsky was born in Jerusalem to American parents shortly after this new law was signed by President George W. Bush. When his parents filed the application for "Jerusalem, Israel," they were told the State Department would not comply. Bush issued a signing statement that his administration would not abide by this provision because it would "interfere with the President's constitutional authority to formulate the position of the United States, speak for the Nation in international affairs, and determine the terms on which recognition is given to foreign states."

Titanic Misappropriation of Reagan

This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published April 13, 2012 on The Washington Times website.

The Titanic went down 100 years ago, on April 15, 1912. It took just two hours and 40 minutes for the sea to swallow the ship that "God Himself couldn't sink."

It's taken longer - a few decades - to sink the United States under massive debt, but we're not at the sea bottom - yet. What happens in November may well determine whether we go there.

Politicians often cloak themselves in the mantle of statesmen from other eras who exemplified virtues that they lack. Barack Obama, like other politicians who sense Americans' deep appreciation of Ronald Reagan, is out there invoking the Gipper. It's like Pee-wee Herman quoting Chuck Norris.

COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 203 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS

Obama's Solution: Less Oil, More Regulation

With the national average of gas hovering around $4.00 a gallon, Barack Obama is feeling the pain at the pump. A Fox News poll found that 87% of voters think rising gas prices are a serious threat to the economy.

More voters (24%) blame the Obama Administration and the federal government rather than "Big Oil" (19%) for the spike in prices. And 50% of voters think Obama could do more to bring prices down, but won't because his of support for the radical environmental movement and his hatred of fossil fuels.

So today, Obama offered his solution to the problem of rising gas prices: More regulation and bigger government. Specifically, Obama wants to give the government more power to crack down on what he called speculation in the energy market. Reuters followed up on the president's press conference this morning with a report headlined: "Obama Plan To Increase Oversight Of Oil Markets."

Call me skeptical, but I predict this won't have any impact on your pain at the pump. To begin with, this is not a new proposal. Consider this headline from April 21, 2011: "U.S. to Investigate Fraud in Energy Markets." Been there; done that. And prices are still going up. Do we need any more evidence that this administration is running on empty and out of ideas?

Democrats have been playing rhetorical games with energy for years. In 2006, they blamed the Bush Administration for oil price hikes and demanded investigations of alleged price gouging. In 2008, Nancy Pelosi blamed the "two oil men in the White House" for high gas prices.

Obama and his Democrat allies are great at pointing fingers. But what they won't do is allow our energy industry to do what it does best. The Bush Administration tried repeatedly to allow more drilling in Alaska. Democrats went so far as to filibuster the Defense budget to prevent it.

And since taking office Obama has done nothing but bash the oil industry, threaten to raise its taxes, restrict drilling on public lands, and subsidize "green" failures like Solyndra. As a result, gas prices have doubled since Obama took office, and now he's worried that voters are starting to notice.

Scandals Shake Obama's Washington

House Republicans are turning up the heat today on the Obama Administration's waste and abuse of taxpayer dollars. Hearings on Capitol Hill continued for a second day into the General Services Administration's Las Vegas conference that cost taxpayers more than $800,000.

GSA Inspector General Brian Miller said today, "Every time we turned over a stone we found 50 more with all kinds of things crawling out." Criminal charges are now likely. One GSA official apparently drank "a fifth" in Las Vegas on your dime then "took the fifth" at a congressional hearing yesterday.

On another scandal front, the Secret Service has revoked the security clearances of 11 agents charged with soliciting prostitutes in Colombia. According to ABC News the agents "allegedly bragged 'we work for Obama' and 'we're here to protect him.'" Worse, they reportedly had copies of the president's schedule with them while they were in the brothel, raising concerns about a security breach.

Meanwhile, the front page of today's Washington Post reports that Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta's weekend trips to his California home have cost taxpayers "more than $800,000 since July." Granted, Panetta has a serious job with some special requirements. But even the Post notes that Panetta's travel tab comes at a time when "Pentagon leaders say they are scraping by to adjust to a new era of austerity." While we are closing bases and cutting troops, can we really justify "$3,200 per hour" to fly Mr. Panetta home?

Barack Obama said he would end corruption and change the culture of Washington. But the bureaucrats are more reckless than ever and the spending of your hard-earned money is totally out-of-control. In 203 days, the American people can decide if they like the status quo. I am betting the answer is NO!

Buffett Rule A Bust

The Buffett rule charade is over -- for now at least. The Democrat Senate failed to muster the necessary support last night to advance debate on a proposed bill to raise taxes on "millionaires and billionaires." The vote fell largely along party lines with one Republican -- Sen. Susan Collins of Maine -- voting with the Democrats in support of the Buffett rule, while two Democrats -- Pryor of Arkansas and Liebermann of Connecticut -- opposed it.

I'm willing to give Collins a pass on this one, since the alternative in Maine is a left-wing Democrat guaranteed to be against us 100% of the time. But there are plenty of Democrats in conservative-leaning states who should be vulnerable for voting to raise taxes and who routinely vote against us.

But here's the point I want to focus on. Harry Reid knew the Buffett rule would never pass the Senate and, even if it did, it was dead on arrival in the GOP House of Representatives. Just like Obama's oil speculation crackdown, the Buffett rule was never a serious proposal. Despite all the hype, it was an "insanely political gimmick."

But when House Republicans proposed their "cut, cap and balance" strategy to rein in spending, the media mocked it, saying, "Everyone knows this is going nowhere in the Democrat Senate" -- if they even bothered to mention it at all.

Unfortunately, we haven't heard the last of the Buffett rule. Obama and the Occupy Wall Street movement are driven by class warfare and envy. Desperate to "spread the wealth around," their goal isn't to solve our fiscal crisis, but to convince you that raising taxes is the right thing to do. Once we go down that road, first by taxing millionaires and billionaires, then they inevitably will raise them on everyone.

The Madness Of Media Matters

Every organization that seeks tax exempt status from the IRS is required to file a form stating the organization's mission and purpose. The Daily Caller has gotten a copy of this form for the George Soros-funded outfit Media Matters. Here is the justification Media Matters gave for seeking non-profit status:

"Media Matters for America (MMA) believes that news reporting and analysis by the American media, with its eye on profit margin and preservation of the status quo, has become biased. It is common for news and commentary by the press to present viewpoints that tend to overly promote corporate interests, the rights of the wealthy, and a conservative, Christian-influenced ideology."

Media Matters has made no secret of its left-wing ideology. But just how deranged do you have to be after watching the typical 24-news cycle to believe that the American media "overly promote" free enterprise, the rich and "conservative, Christian" values?

I have no idea what conservative, Christian bias Media Matters sees out there, and neither do the American people. Consider these findings from a September 2011 Gallup poll:

  • Only 44% of Americans had a great deal or fair amount of trust in the mass media. Why such a low number?
  • Only 36% said the media were "about right" in their coverage.
  • 60% said the media were biased. But only 13% felt the media were "too conservative," while 47% said the media were "too liberal."

Quote Of The Day

Here's Jay Leno summarizing the Obama years:

"President Obama released his tax returns. It turns out he made $900,000 less in 2011 than he did in 2010. You know what that means? Even Obama is doing worse under President Obama."

Hoping for just a little change, 200, 000 bankruptcy filers are paying with their tax refunds

Apr 17, 2012 06:13 am | Coach Collins

By Kevin "Coach" Collins

Bled white and destroyed by Barack Obama's "hope and change" hundreds of thousands of Americans have been forced to use tax refunds to pay the filing costs of their bankruptcies. The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) reports that bankruptcy lawyers have seen an increase in personal bankruptcies filings which follow this pattern: many clients are filing bankruptcy soon after receiving their tax refunds.

This has been especially true since a law passed in 2005 made bankruptcy more costly and more difficult.  For some people,  in Barack Obama's upside down America as fast as money comes in it goes to buy a bankruptcy file number. There are no plans for vacations or buying a new car for many people. As one bankruptcy lawyer explained the situation, "If people are expecting a big refund, they go as fast as they can to a tax preparer. They need the money so they can afford to ...  On APRIL 16, 1859, French historian Alexis de Tocqueville died.
After nine months of traveling the United States, he wrote Democracy in America in 1835, which has been described as "the most comprehensive...analysis of character and society in America ever written."
Alexis de Tocqueville wrote:
"Upon my arrival in the United States the religious aspect of the country was the first thing that struck my attention...
In France I had almost always seen the spirit of religion and the spirit of freedom marching in opposite directions.
But in America I found they were intimately united."
De Tocqueville continued:
"The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other...
They brought with them into the New World a form of Christianity which I cannot better describe than by styling ... Continue Reading:American Minute April 16

Sweet Schadenfreude: States that love Obama are paying the highest gas prices!

Apr 16, 2012 02:13 pm | Coach Collins

By Kevin "Coach" Collins

A review of current gasoline prices reveals an interesting fact. There is a solid relationship between the pump price of gas and local support for Barack Obama. The higher the chances of Obama winning a state, the higher the gas prices its residents are paying.

The deep blue bastions of California Illinois Washington D.C, and New York pay the highest prices for gasoline and the reddest states like  Wyoming, Montana, Oklahoma and Utah where Obama has virtually no chance of winning next November have among the lowest pump prices.

Ninety percent of the states that voted against Obama in 2008 have pump prices below the national average. It is one of the frustrating ironies of Obama's current gasoline crisis that he gets the benefit of a price average which is lower than it actually should be because of better management and lower taxes in Red States.

Conversely over eighty percent of the ... Continue Reading:Sweet Schadenfreude: States that love Obama are paying the highest gas prices!

FAIR Action Alert

Act Now to Stop the IRS from Giving Tax Credits to Illegal Aliens!

FAIR needs you to act NOW to stop the IRS from giving tax credits to illegal aliens. Last year, the Inspector General for the U.S. Treasury Department released a report revealing that illegal aliens annually receive $4.2 billion in refundable tax credits, primarily through the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). Tomorrow morning, the House Ways and Means Committee will be considering whether to include language as part of a budget reconciliation package that would stop this injustice to American taxpayers. The provision under consideration - similar to bills introduced by Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX), Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA), and Senator David Vitter (R-LA) - would close this tax credit loophole by requiring that individuals who claim the ACTC provide a valid Social Security Number (SSN). Currently, the IRS only requires applicants for the ACTC to provide an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), which the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) indiscriminately hands out to illegal aliens.

Call the Ways and Means Committee Members TODAY and tell them:

  • Congress should not force American taxpayers to subsidize illegal immigration, especially by doling out billions in tax credits to illegal aliens; and
  • Fraud in our tax system must be stopped - only those with valid Social Security Numbers, not illegal aliens, should receive refundable tax credits!

Lawmakers Responded to Your Calls

Last week, we told you that there are some in Congress mulling a return to earmarking - the wasteful spending that leads to your taxpayer dollars spent on indoor rainforests and bridges to nowhere.

Conservatives like you sprang into action, calling Representatives  and asking who still supports the earmarks ban. Some are succumbing to the Washington Establishment, some are not.

>> We read your call reports, and to date, these 72 Representatives have gone on the record to say that they support continuing the ban on earmarks.

These are just the Representatives who have responded thus far, and we know that far more oppose the wasteful spending that earmarks bring. Thanks to you, we are encouraging them to stand strong against the Washington Establishment.

Henry Ford: No Model P(rogressive)

Obama has a new role model for his Buffett Rule tax-Henry Ford. It's an odd choice considering that Ford advocated free-market capitalism and opposed redistributive policies. Despite the lucrative government contracts, Henry Ford refused to participate in FDR's 1933 National Recovery Act (let's not forget that Ford Motors was the only "big-three" automaker to decline the recent government bailout).

So why cite Ford as support for a redistributive "fairness tax"-especially one that discourages investment in the sort of successful companies Ford worked to create?

In his stump speech for the Buffett Rule, Obama argues that Ford was a progressive who understood that "prosperity has never trickled down from the wealthy few." Accordingly, Ford paid high wages to redistribute his unwarranted profits to the middle class.

Yes, Ford's $5-a-day wage in 1914 (a little over $100 by today's measure) was more than double the average autoworker's pay. And yes, Ford felt a personal moral obligation to pay his workers well and help reduce poverty (what he called "welfare capitalism"). But paying high wages to valuable employees wasn't a redistributive  plan-it was good business.

"We were not distributing anything," he explained in his autobiography," we were building a future. A low wage business is always insecure." Ford needed the $5-a-day wage to attract and retain skilled workers and stay ahead of his competitors. He estimated the high wage reduced the number of new employees he had to hire and train by 200,000 people per year.

Henry Ford was the Steve Jobs of his day, and cars were ipods of the 1920s. Just as Apple pays high wages to engineers to produce cutting-edge gadgets, so Ford paid high wages to retain skilled labor to build cars. Ford paid these wages because the market allowed-nay, demanded-them. Far from driving a top-down progressive policy, Ford was effectively responding to the needs of the market.

And how did Ford react to blatantly redistributive policies? "I do not think that this country is ready to be treated like Russia for a while," Ford said of the New Deal, "There is a lot of the pioneer spirit here yet." That sentiment would apply to the Buffett Rule. The rule would impose a 30% alternative minimum tax rate on all income (now defined to include wages, capital gains, and dividends) above $1 million dollars. The Buffett Rule stifles American industriousness: it will weaken the economy by discouraging investment and reduce the deficit by a mere 0.5%. Worse than the policy outcome is the destructive hubris underlying the proposal: the Buffett Rule assumes that only government redistribution can help the middle class.

Obama learned the wrong lesson from Ford's $5-a-day wage. Ford created remunerative jobs for the middle class-not because of stringent progressive regulations and redistributive programs-but because his company had the freedom and the flexibility to respond to the needs of market.

Harry Reid Shuts Down Budget Process In Senate

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 01:39 PM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

The Democratic Senate has not adopted a budget in three years. This is not only flagrantly irresponsible, it is a violation of federal law. Outgoing Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, who is retiring at the end of the year, apparently felt pangs of conscience, because he decided it was finally time for his committee to mark up a budget. He announced that the committee would do so, starting tomorrow.

A standard markup process begins with the committee chairman laying out a proposal, with the chairman and the ranking minority member giving opening statements. This is followed by an amendment process, in which amendments to the proposed legislation (here, the budget resolution) are offered and voted on. The markup process concludes with a committee vote on the bill or resolution as amended. In this case, Conrad assured ranking Republican Jeff Sessions that amendments would be allowed, and as recently as a few hours ago, Conrad's and Sessions's staffs were working out details of the amendment process.

Then, earlier this afternoon, Conrad gave a press conference in which he made the stunning announcement that there will be no budget markup after all. Instead, he will present a budget to the Budget Committee tomorrow. There will be no amendments and there will be no votes; not, at least, until after the election. Apparently Conrad had been proceeding on his own initiative, and at the 11th hour Harry Reid-supported by members of his caucus who do not want to have to go on record in favor of any budget-shut down the process.

This is a startling abdication of responsibility by the majority party in the Senate. A few minutes ago, Senator Sessions discussed this latest development on the telephone with a number of reporters. Sessions said that he was "deeply disappointed" in the Democrats' actions, which evidently were driven by the Democrats' unwillingness to commit themselves to any budget proposal. Sessions attributed this to a "lack of will, courage, or the ability of Democrats to unify behind a plan." He said the Democrats have gone through "procedural gymnastics to avoid saying what they are for" because they "don't want to be held accountable for anything." In 2011, for example, the Democrats voted down three different budgets, but didn't vote in favor of anything. Sessions indicated that when Conrad made his surprise announcement this afternoon, he and other Republicans were working on the amendments they intended to propose, which related, among other things, to health care, the double counting of savings, and increased revenues that could be obtained from more energy production. Now those amendments will not see the light of day in the Budget Committee.

The content of Conrad's budget is almost an afterthought, but it may be even worse than President Obama's. It includes zero spending cuts from the existing baseline and increases taxes by $2.6 trillion, $700 billion more than Obama's budget. Under Conrad's budget, the federal debt (granting all assumptions underlying the calculations) would increase by $7 trillion.

Is that a plan that the American people want to follow? I don't think so, but Harry Reid's latest maneuvering ensures that no Democratic Senator will have to vote on a budget before the election in November, and no Democrat will have to take responsibility for those unpalatable numbers other than Senator Conrad himself. The Democrats' feckless inability to face fiscal reality, as manifested in the Senate's failure to adopt a budget for three years and counting, is the clearest evidence of that party's unfitness to lead the nation.

Kudos to Senate Republicans

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 10:55 AM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

The Buffett Rule went down to defeat in the Senate yesterday, 51-45 (60 votes were needed for passage). No surprise there; the vote was understood by everyone to be nothing but political theater.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with bringing proposals up for a vote even though you know they won't pass. On the contrary, this can be a valuable means of identifying differences between the parties and the positions of individual legislators. It is entirely appropriate to force your opponents to vote on a controversial measure, and then hammer them for their votes.

In that context, it is good to see that the vote fell almost entirely along party lines. One Republican (Susan Collins) voted yes, and one Democrat (Mark Pryor) voted no. That the Democrats were unable to scare or bully more Republicans into voting for the measure suggests that most people know the Buffett Rule isn't a serious legislative proposal. Note that Scott Brown, who has been willing to part company with his party on important issues, voted against it. Apparently, even Massachusetts voters have caught on to the fact that the Democrats have no serious budget or tax plans to offer, and have resorted to trying to fool voters with meaningless stunts like the Buffett Rule.

Munich 1972

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 05:55 AM PDT

(Scott Johnson)

Daniel Johnson reviewed David Clay Large's Munich 1972 in the weekend Review section of the Wall Street Journal this past Saturday. The review is titled "Terror at the games." Johnson hails the book, just published yesterday, as representing "an almost ideal matching of historian and subject."

The subject of the book is the murder of the Israeli Olympic athletes by the Arab terrorist group Black September. Johnson refers throughout his review to the group by that name without further ado. But what was Black September?

Black September was simply the first of the deniable Fatah/PLO covert units. When a Black September unit assassinated United States Ambassador to Sudan Cleo Noel, his deputy and a Belgian colleague in Khartoum the following year, American authorities quickly determined exactly what "Black September" was: a front for Fatah operating under the personal direction of Yasser Arafat.

Indeed, through a post in Cyprus that listened in on PLO communications, NSA analyst Jim Welsh had overheard Arafat planning the operation and confirming the coded orders given to Black September operatives to pull the trigger on Noel and the others. I put everything I learned about the story in the Weekly Standard article "How Arafat got away with murder."

The story of Black September is history, but it is not merely of historical interest. Arafat's right hand man is the current (illegitimate holdover) president of the Palestinian Authority and he served as the financier of the Munich operation. Even if justice is never to be rendered for the horrendous massacres in Munich and Khartoum, the least we can do is remember.

Obama's Gaffes Are His Own

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 05:40 AM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

Yesterday Barack Obama addressed the Summit of the Americas in Colombia and spoke about the conflict between the United Kingdom and Argentina over the Falklands. Obama seemed to tilt toward Argentina by calling the islands the "Malvinas" rather than the Falklands, which Argentina insists is their proper name.

Only Obama didn't say Malvinas, he said Maldives-an entirely different group of islands located thousands of miles from the Falklands in the Indian Ocean:

So with one word, Obama both offended the British and made himself a laughingstock with the Latin Americans. Here in the U.S., we are used to such embarrassing errors by our president, but the international press hasn't quite caught up. My complaint, specifically, is about this account of Obama's gaffe in the Telegraph, not a particularly left-wing paper by British standards. The Telegraph's article is headlined "Barack Obama makes Falklands gaffe by calling Malvinas the Maldives." It begins:

Barack Obama made an uncharacteristic error, more akin to those of his predecessor George W Bush, by referring to the Falkland Islands as the Maldives.

Really? When did Mr. Bush ever display such geographic ignorance? It is Obama, not Bush, who is prone to putting his foot in his mouth in a matter that causes diplomatic embarrassment. Can we finally, after well over three years, leave his predecessor out of it and let Obama own his many gaffes and blunders?

Out of Africa: Middle East meets West

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 05:14 AM PDT

(Scott Johnson)

Idan Raichel is the Israeli pop star who made waves with his 2006 recording The Idan Raichel Project. He has followed up with subsequent recordings that Amazon has collected here. Commenting in the New York Times on Idan's original recording, Jon Pareles perfectly captured my reaction:

The Idan Raichel Project was a huge hit in Israel for good reason: it envisions a modern, multicultural nation where voices of young and old, Ethiopian and Yemenite, are all heard in songs devoted to love and tolerance. Idan Raichel is the keyboardist, songwriter and producer behind the scenes, and he's clearly as familiar with Peter Gabriel as with Middle Eastern traditions. His arrangements bind the voices together in somber minor-mode anthems paced by electronic beats, earnestly seeking to uplift.

Thanks to the efforts of tour host Fern Oppenheim, who apparently provided some romantic advice to Idan at a crucial moment in his life, Idan joined our group on the Tel Aviv beachfront boardwalk during the 2007 bloggers' tour of Israel that she led. I was slightly happy to make his acquaintance.

Last night Idan came to town to perform at the Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant in downtown Minneapolis for a sold-out show featuring Malian guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Toure. Jim Fusilli recently recounted the story behind the collaboration that led to The Tel Aviv Session, their new recording:

When Israeli pop superstar Idan Raichel ran into Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Toure in a Berlin airport in 2008, it was as if a destiny were fulfilled. A gifted pianist, Mr. Raichel is a proponent of African music and an admirer of Mr. Toure as well as Mr. Toure's father, the late Ali Farka Toure. At the time, the younger Mr. Toure was entering the global marketplace via his self-titled debut album. The two men pledged to play together.

Two years later, they did: Mr. Raichel joined Mr. Toure's band on stage at the Tel Aviv Opera House; the next day, they gathered in a nearby recording studio and made what became "The Tel Aviv Session" (Cumbancha), the just-released disc by the Toure-Raichel Collective. Culled from a lengthy jam session that also included Israeli bassist Yossi Fine, who produced Mr. Touré's second solo album, and Malian percussionist Souleymane Kane, the deeply affecting, at times hypnotic album rises from simmering grooves enriched by Mr. Toure's stinging solos on acoustic and electric guitars and Mr. Raichel's cascading piano. It's not so much a cross-cultural exercise as an exploration of common ground.

John and I and my wife went to see the foursome perform last night. Before the show I tracked Idan down and asked him if he remembered meeting our group in Tel Aviv. He remembered it warmly. I told Idan that I had been unable to find a review of the show from his current tour and said I wanted to write about it. He thought that was a good idea. So here it is.

The show is spectacular. I don't know jazz well, but to my ears Idan's work on acoustic piano recalled that of Keith Jarrett vintage 1967, when he was backing Charles Lloyd, and Toure's work on accoustic guitar recalled that of John McClaughlin vintage 1971, with its melodic beauty and lightning runs. The four musicians of the collective made incredibly beautiful music together during the two-hour set. I thought the music evoked something spiritual and ecstatic, though there was nothing abstract about it. Idan and Toure have deepened and perfected the dialogue that they started on their recording.

The Web site of the group is here. It shows that they are headed to Platteville, Wisconsin (tonight), Chicago (Thursday) and points west. If you see them, I am confident you will thank me for sending you in their direction. Idan sent me off with a copy of Traveling Home, a three-CD set that is his latest with the Idan Raichel Project. He urged us to check it out. (Thanks to Yeara for the photo.)

JOHN adds: The concert was indeed fun. "Hypnotic" is an apt description of the music, but it doesn't fully convey how melodic the playing was. I don't know whether there is any recording that equals what we heard last night, but I will try to track one down. The concert was excellent in a number of ways, but Raichel's piano playing deserves mention, in part because he did everything imaginable with the instrument. In addition to playing in the normal fashion, which he did beautifully, Raichel would occasionally hold keys down with his left hand and strum the strings like a guitar, bang the wallboard against the front of the piano for percussion, and otherwise extract sounds from the instrument that I had never heard before. Our photos were taken in very low light with cell phone cameras so they aren't great, but here is one more in which I am sort of visible on the left along with Idan and Scott:

Arlen Specter recently went on Jason Lewis' show to talk about his book and blew up over having to sit through commercials between interview segments. Perhaps if someone could have brought the former Senator a naked Congressman for him to look at, he would have been okay.

You'll never believe how much stimulus $$ went towards moving a plant
Funny, Joe Biden wasn't traveling the country touting how an unbelievable amount of stimulus money went to 'translocating' a single 'rare' bush in San Francisco - a bush that stood in the path of a $1b highway renovation project. It's a plant you can get at any home store for less than $20. WARNING: this story will make your head explode.

Farrakhan Exposed
Last Thursday Glenn's special "Farrakhan Exposed" revealed mind-blowing information the MSM refuses to touch, despite the Nation of Islam's influence & tens of thousands of devoted followers . Shock audio reveals Farrakhan basically admitting the Nation of Islam killed Malcolm X, NOI's close connection with the Black Panthers, their history of hatred - especially towards the United States - and more. Now available on demand.

On 'Real News' Friday, Buck Sexton argued that it is easy to complain about human rights violations going on in North Korea, but more difficult to enact effective policy to solve the issue. "As long as China doesn't want to do anything, there isn't much we can do" Sexton said in frustration with the geo-political arrangements that make it difficult for the United States to act.

On Today's Program

Glenn BeckTonight on GBTV: Glenn exposes the real reason Warren Buffett has postured himself as a reasoned rich guy with a soul and it has nothing to do with him caring about the poor. That and more tonight at 5pm only on GBTV!

Real News: Mitt Romney is appealing to NRA members, telling them that he is the man to protect the 2nd Amendment, and keep President Obama from serving a second term. Will gun control become the new rallying cry to the GOP this election season? That's just one of many topics up for debate tonight on Real News from The Blaze at 6pm ET (or on demand).

It's Tax Day! See how gov spends your money wisely
Happy Tax Day! Don't you just feel extra generous today? After all, today is the day where you get to give away so much of your money to the federal government so they can waste it on stupid programs...or $800,000 parties in Las Vegas! Do you have any charitable feelings today? Or have all the lies out of Washington and the White House's class warfare just made Tax Day even worse than it usually is? Glenn explains HERE.

What's the latest on GBTV? Get a full rundown from The GBTV Blog.

Warrior Dash: See Stu get beat by Miss America
Warrior Dash is this weekend and conveniently Stu's back is "allegedly" hurting him. This weekend Stu, Raj, Miss America 2008, and other Mercury employees will gear up for the 3.2 mile race filled with 14 obstacle courses. The best part is, with your help, Glenn and Pat get to torcher the losers - seriously. $275,000 has already been raised and all donations made over the next two days (up to $50,000) will be matched. See Stu suffer and get beat by Miss America by donating to Mercury One today!

Stu to Buffet: Prove It. #ReleaseTheReturn

New documentary coming to GBTV: Next Wednesday, April 25th beginning at 7:00pm ET, we will premiere the brand new documentary Rumors of War III: Target U.S. The documentary will be directly followed by a post show hosted by Glenn - he'll be joined by guests from the film and will be answering YOUR questions. Get all the details and WATCH THE TRAILER.

Former agent weighs in on Secret Service sex scandal
Dan Bongino is a former Secret Service agent who served under both the Bush and Obama administrations. What does he think about the allegations being levied at the world's premiere protective force? Any chance this actually happened or is a set up more likely? Bongino offers his unique perspective on the event - watch his interview with Glenn HERE.

PLUS: Dan Bongino is one of a handful of people running for office this year that Glenn believes would be good for this country. Who else is included? Read the list HERE.

The scariest Farrakhan audio yet?
Another day, another hate-filled, bone chilling, rage inducing rant from Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. What's the latest? Farrakhan says that any day now people are going to rise up and start killing their leaders! Shouldn't we be taking this radical hatemonger at his word? After all, this guy now leads the organization that assassinated Malcolm X. Glenn plays the audio and reacts on radio.

Protestors storm Romney event
Occupy Philly protesters showed up at a Mitt Romney event and couldn't quite understand why they weren't allowed to barge in, shout down Romney, and be a huge disruption. Did they ever hear of the word "civility"? Well, if all you care about is anarchy and collapsing society - civility probably doesn't mean much to you. Remember 8.28 when all those angry protestors gathered at the Lincoln Memorial and were just filled with all that hate and anger and...wait a minute...it wasn't like that all. See how the left protests and get Glenn's reaction.
