For a man so in love with the technology of image, the camera, the microphone and the teleprompter, the leader of the increasingly less free world has a natural tendency to put a little too much faith in it. This is the second time that an open microphone has let Obama down, the first time it recorded him stabbing an ally in the back, the second time it recorded him stabbing a few dozen more in the back.

 

Medvedev, whose bosom buddy just managed to cling to power with a stolen election and brutal suppression of protests, surely understands how O feels. Photo ops with tigers and sunken treasures, not to mention skiing, martial arts and even rap, did not keep the Big P in smooth with the Russian public when the economy headed south.

Vladimir Putin didn't have any racial guilt to ladle on the voters that might get them to overlook the mansions, the corruption and the abuses of power. But the average American voter, like the Russian voter, is more interested in the meat and potatoes, not to mention the gasoline, than in mystical allusions to the power of history. If Putin at times seemed bent on passing himself off as a new czar and Obama as a new savior, the crown and halo were shattered by the economy.

Putin's had tightened control over Russia to an extent that the Obamas and the Warrens could only fondly dream of in their fondest federalist fantasies. And it's easier to steal elections, when you don't have to kowtow to a bunch of provincial interests and take the complaints of bible and gun owners seriously. But much like Putin and Ahmadinejad, Obama enjoys dim prospects in a straight election. And unlike them, he doesn't have a military force that will turn up a few million ballots and send the protesters straight to the hospital, if not to the morgue.

Obama likes being a democrat, it's just the democracy part that he doesn't much care for. And while his diplomacy is generally underwhelming, a mutual dislike of elections proved to be a popular bonding topic with Medvedev, the human face of the regime. But if Medvedev really thought that Obama was serious about needing more space because of an election, he hasn't been paying much attention to American politics. 

Did James Carville Just Reveal the Democratic Strategy If Obamacare Is Overturned? 

Are the Democrats expecting to lose the battle over healthcare? Judging from the comments made by several prominent Dems, the party is prepping for what to do after the high court shoots down the individual mandate.

Two days ago, former DNC Chair Howard Dean told CBS Early Morning that he expected the individual mandate to be overturned.

Yesterday, CNN's Legal Analyst Jeffry Toobin called the proceedings "a train wreck" and predicted that the individual mandate will "likely be struck down." If true, how will the Democrats then spin the defeat to their benefit? Enter James Carville.

Last night on CNN, the Democratic consultant made a curious statement about what happens if the Supreme Court rules against the administration. He appears to already be ratcheting up the anti-Republican and anti-Supreme Court rhetoric in preparation, even tying a possible Obamacare defeat to the Bush-Gore election of 2000.

Over the years, many friends of Hillsdale, those who never attended college here, have said to me: "Dr. Arnn, I wish I could take Hillsdale's Constitution course!"

In response to these requests, this past year, for the first time ever, Hillsdale College offered the "Introduction to the Constitution" lecture series at no charge. Frankly, I wasn't sure what sort of a response a course like this would have.

That's why I was excited to see that YOU and almost 200,000 other people from all over the United States registered for "Introduction to the Constitution."

I was thrilled, not only by the response, but at what it indicates: Americans are willing and eager learn about the Constitution and to defend the principles of liberty that made America so prosperous!

1. Sinners In the Hands of Anthony Kennedy

Yesterday the left descended into madness. The madness came early in the day. It happened shortly after 10 o'clock in the morning. Justice Anthony Kennedy opened his mouth and uttered his first question on the issue of the individual mandate. He asked, "Can you create commerce in order to regulate it?" The question, the second asked yesterday morning, bothered the left.

As the clock approached 11, Kennedy spoke again, sending shockwaves through the legal community. He stated matter of factly,

"[T]he reason this is concerning, is because it requires the individual to do an affirmative act. In the law of torts our tradition, our law, has been that you don't have the duty to rescue someone if that person is in danger. The blind man is walking in front of a car and you do not have a duty to stop him absent some relation between you. And there is some severe moral criticisms of that rule, but that's generally the rule.

"And here the government is saying that the Federal Government has a duty to tell the individual citizen that it must act, and that is different from what we have in previous cases and that changes the relationship of the Federal Government to the individual in the very fundamental way."

It was the quote heard round the world. It is what the tea party movement, libertarians, conservatives, and so many private citizens have been saying. It was an expression of what nearly every legal scholar on television has pooh-poohed as the troglodyte rhetoric of plebeians not educated enough to understand their own founding compact.

That Justice Kennedy expressed something so obvious to so many Americans that so many well educated legal analysts have mocked for two years as an outmoded view of the constitution put forward only by hicks, rubes, and the racist middle class tea partiers not cool enough to defecate on police cars like the Occupy Wall Street hipsters should deeply, deeply trouble every radio station, newspaper, and television news network along with the American people.

Just how out of touch are the people the news media relies on as legal experts used to help form both their and their audiences' opinions? More so, is it not abundantly obvious that legal experts let their own partisanship shape their opinions?

All of this, however, overshadows a more important issue - how the hell did a constitutional, democratic republic come to depend on the whims of one man in a black robe who nobody ever elected to anything?

2. The Obama Administration Outlaws New Coal-Fired Powerplants

Yesterday the Obama Administration effectively outlawed coal as a fuel source and it underscores the importance of Congress severely circumscribing the authority of regulatory agencies.

By outlawing new coal-fired electric generation plants and ignoring nuclear power, the Administration has set in motion a plan to make the nation dependent upon natural gas and a mishmash of politically correct but non-viable sources such as solar and wind as older plants are decommissioned. Essentially, Obama has done via regulatory means what it could not accomplish in Congress: to set the trajectory for exorbitant electricity prices in the service of reducing "greenhouse gasses."

3. Coal policy could swing the election

Given the the administration's recent moves on coal power, I couldn't help but wonder how that might affect the President in swing states, should prices rise in coal-burning states.

A check I made this morning suggests that the answer is yes, if coal is an issue in this election, it could swing close states.

 Richard Allen was born to slave parents in Philadelphia and sold with his family to a plantation in Dover, Delaware.
With the permission of his master, he began attending the Methodist meetings and learned to read and write.
Richard Allen was converted at age 16 and is said to have worked harder to prove that Christianity did not make slaves worse servants.
Richard Allen then invited a minister to visit and preach to his master, resulting in his master's conversion after hearing that on the Day of Judgment slaveholders would be "weighed in the balance and found wanting."
His repentant master made arrangements for Richard, now 26, to become free.
Richard Allen became a licensed exhorter and founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Their first church building was dedicated in 1794 by America's first Methodist Bishop, the circuit-riding preacher Francis Asbury.

Justice Kagan breaks federal law in order to force ObamaCare on American people

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan will be in clear violation of federal law by virtue of her decision to hear the Affordable Care Act case coming before the Supreme Court today.

Upon joining the other justices to hear oral arguments she will fracture the federal statute which DEMANDS that judges recuse themselves from participation in a case "where he has served in governmental employment and in such capacity participated as council, adviser or material witness concerning the proceeding or expressed an opinion concerning the merits of the particular case in controversy."   There is enough oil in AMWR to supply the US at our present rate of usage for morethan 200 years. The space that ANWR occupies in Alaskais equivalent to a postage stamp in the Mojave Desert .
  If you won't mind paying $5.00 a gallon in the very near future try to make sense of the following:

  I would like to add a little more information. A new pipeline across   Alaska isn't required since the location for drilling in ANWR is about   160 miles from the North Slope Prudhoe Bay pipeline where it would   be connected. I did not know this.
  Second the wildlife love the pipeline since it is heated and provides a  shelter during the worst times during the winter.
  Maybe another question should be asked. FIRST do you know what   ANWR is? ANSWER: Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

ObamaCare On Trial: Day Two

Today the justices of the United States Supreme Court took on the centerpiece of ObamaCare: the individual mandate. When Judge Roger Vinson struck down ObamaCare in February 2011, he wrote that in defending the law the administration had "asserted again and again that the individual mandate is absolutely 'necessary' and 'essential' for the Act to operate as it was intended by Congress."

Attempting to predict the outcome of a case based upon oral arguments can be dangerous. But if today's questions are any indication of how the justices will decide, the individual mandate appears to be on life support. According to various reports, the court's four liberals predictably defended the law, while the mandate came under intense fire from the court's conservative wing.

But what must have the Obama White House nervous was the line of questioning from Justice Anthony Kennedy. A moderate with no definable ideology, Kennedy is often the deciding vote on the deeply divided court.

The New York Times reports that Kennedy did not wait to criticize the mandate and began questioning the government's attorney, Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., "only minutes into the argument." At one point, Justice Kennedy said the government had a "heavy burden of justification." He later added, "Here the government is saying that the Federal Government has a duty to tell the individual citizen that it must act ... and that changes the relationship of the Federal Government to the individual in the very fundamental way."

Kennedy's line of questioning led one well-known observer of the high court to write, "It is essentially clear that the four more liberal members ... will vote in favor of the mandate. But there is no fifth vote yet." Liberal legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin, appearing on CNN after today's hearing, was in panic mode. Toobin said:

"This was a train wreck for the Obama Administration. This law looks like it's going to be struck down. I'm telling you, all of the predictions, including mine, that the justices would not have a problem with this law were wrong. I think this law is in grave, grave trouble."

No one should be celebrating yet. A decision isn't expected until the summer, and Kennedy later in today's session seemed to be bending. Nonetheless, today's hearing was encouraging.


What Is Obama's January 2013 Surprise?

It's no secret that Barack Obama is not a fan of Ronald Reagan's defense build-up. In 2008 he pledged to a left-wing group, "I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems. I will not weaponize space. I will slow our development of future combat systems. ...I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons."

Ever since he took office he has been working to fulfill that pledge. In September 2009, Obama unilaterally scrapped a missile defense system deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic.

In 2010, Obama overruled his own Secretary of Defense and declared that the United States would not develop new nuclear weapons. This February, it was reported that Obama was considering massive cuts -- up to 80% -- in America's nuclear arsenal.

Evidently, Obama wants to do even more. While meeting with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev in South Korea yesterday, Obama was caught on an open mic asking for "space." Here's the "private" exchange between the two leaders:

"President Obama: On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it's important for [Vladimir Putin] to give me space.

"President Medvedev: Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you...

"President Obama: This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.

"President Medvedev: I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir."

The media went nuts over the Romney campaign's "Etch A Sketch" gaffe. But this is a far more serious issue. Flexibility for what exactly? What does Obama want to concede to Russia that is so controversial he is afraid to do it before the November election? What is his January 2013 surprise?

Ronald Reagan too believed in a world where nuclear weapons would be obsolete. But he never meant to leave us vulnerable. That is what his Strategic Defense Initiative was all about -- defending America from a nuclear attack. But Barack Obama has made it abundantly clear that he rejects the idea of missile defense.

As Iran works feverishly to develop nuclear weapons, while nuclear North Korea remains governed by Stalinist dictators, I think the American people deserve to know exactly what Obama is promising the Russians he will do if he is reelected.

Perhaps a better "strategic defense initiative" for 2012 would be to make sure Obama is defeated in 224 days!


Environmentalists Demand "Effective World Government"

Two weeks ago, I wrote about a journalist who admitted that many radical environmentalists are really Marxists at heart. In a recent interview, Naomi Klein said, "...if you want to get serious about climate change, really serious, ...then you need to be intervening strongly in the economy... If you take climate change seriously, you do have to throw out the free-market playbook." Some want to go further.

Writing in the Scientific American this month, Gary Stix declared that the fight against climate change requires "effective world government." In other words, the end of American sovereignty. Stix wrote:

"To be effective, a new set of institutions would have to be imbued with heavy-handed, transnational enforcement powers. ...How do we create new institutions with enforcement powers way beyond the current mandate of the U.N.? ...If we are ever to cope with climate change in any fundamental way, radical solutions on the social side are where we must focus."

Al Gore and the left may think the science is settled, but it is not. It was reported this week that the earth experienced global warming 1,000 years ago -- long before the use of fossil fuels. And, of course, that was followed by a cooling period, suggesting that climate change is not something we cause or can control.

In today's Wall Street Journal, Princeton physics professor William Happer debunks many claims of the climate change alarmists, who have a long history of being wrong. But they are always seeking the same thing: More government control of your life.

Douse the Flames, Mr. President!
