CBO: Obamacare to cost $1.76 trillion over 10 yrs
byPhilip Klein Senior Editorial Writer
President Obama's national health care law will cost $1.76 trillion over a decade, according to a new projection released today by the Congressional Budget Office, rather than the $940 billion forecast when it was signed into law.
Democrats employed many accounting tricks when they were pushing through the national health care legislation, the most egregious of which was to delay full implementation of the law until 2014, so it would appear cheaper under the CBO's standard ten-year budget window and, at least on paper, meet Obama's pledge that the legislation would cost "around $900 billion over 10 years." When the final CBO score came out before passage, critics noted that the true 10 year cost would be far higher than advertised once projections accounted for full implementation.
Today, the CBO released new projections from 2013 extending through 2022, and the results are as critics expected: the ten-year cost of the law's core provisions to expand health insurance coverage has now ballooned to $1.76 trillion. That's because we now have estimates for Obamacare's first nine years of full implementation, rather than the mere six when it was signed into law. Only next year will we get a true ten-year cost estimate, if the law isn't overturned by the Supreme Court or repealed by then. Given that in 2022, the last year available, the gross cost of the coverage expansions are $265 billion, we're likely looking at about $2 trillion over the first decade, or more than double what Obama advertised.
UPDATE: I've done another post with additional details from the CBO report
YOUR BODY, HIS LAW By: Betsy McCaughey March 14, 2012 The Obama re-election campaign is mailing out fliers championing his health-care law as a great benefit to women. Sorry: It diminishes women's freedom and privacy. The Obama law vastly expands the president's power over your insurance plan, your doctors' decisions and your medical records. Not just this president's power, but every future president. Why are women's rights advocates so sure they'll always agree with the person occupying the White House? Read more:

Report: Panetta Target of Suicide Attack?
UPDATE: The Afghan driver of a stolen pickup truck burst into flames near the runway of a British base in Afghanistan at about the time U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta's plane arrived today, according to Pentagon spokesman George Little.
There is no indication that the incident at Camp Bastion was an intended attack on Panetta, Little told reporters traveling with Panetta in Kabul. "At no time was the secretary or the secretary's delegation in any danger whatsoever," Little said.
As security personnel arrived at the scene, they found the driver ablaze, and no explosives were found on him or in the vehicle, Little said.
"There's no evidence right now that the driver had any idea who was on that aircraft," John Kirby, a Defense Department spokesman, said in an interview at the Pentagon, according to a pool report.
The incident coincides with a string of attacks pitting Afghans and Americans against each other and casting doubt on the Obama administration's claims of progress in the war and plans to extend their joint efforts after the bulk of foreign troops exit at the end of 2014.

Dear Fellow Patriot,
We have a choice in this years Pennsylvania Senatorial election that will have far reaching consequences for Pennsylvania.
Roger Howard is challenging Dominic Pileggi in the 9th district. Dominic has never been challenged and with the lack of any reformative legislation coming from Harrisburg along with the redistricting fiasco, he is very vulnerable. Can you imagine replacing the third most powerful Republican in Harrisburg?
Right now what stands in our way is the ability to get the message out. We are ordering yard signs and if we had an extra $1000.00 we could double what we are ordering.
Can you make a small donation of $10, $25 or $50. It would make a big difference. Please go to the web site now

Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution
Available to you, your family, your friends, and all Americans.
Weeks One & Two Now Available - Sign Up TODAY!
 | Dr. Larry P. Arnn |
Over the years, many friends of Hillsdale, those who never attended college here, have said to me: "Dr. Arnn, I wish I could take Hillsdale's Constitution course!"
In response to these requests, this past year, for the first time ever, Hillsdale College offered the "Introduction to the Constitution" lecture series at no charge. Frankly, I wasn't sure what sort of a response a course like this would have.
That's why I was excited to see that YOU and almost 200,000 other people from all over the United States registered for "Introduction to the Constitution."
Thank you very much for registering and participating. I hope you learned a lot from the series.
I was thrilled, not only by the response, but at what it indicates: Americans are willing and eager learn about the Constitution and to defend the principles of liberty that made America so prosperous!
And this re-awakening of national interest in the Constitution comes not a minute too soon.
Now, for the first time ever, Hillsdale College is offering a no-cost 10-week online Constitution course based on the class Hillsdale College students must complete for graduation:
"Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution"
This course on the U.S. Constitution is available online at no charge to anyone who wants to understand and defend the timeless principles of liberty upon which our nation was founded!
I am proud to be teaching part of our NEW "Constitution 101" course and hope YOU will be one of my students again!
"Constitution 101" begins on February 20, 2012, and concludes the week of April 30. It will cover such topics as the Declaration of Independence and its connection to the Constitution, how the Constitution is structured to protect individual liberty and ensure good government, the crisis of constitutional government faced by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, and modern challenges to the Constitution during the "Progressive" era.
It is my honor to teach the first class, "The American Mind," and the final class, "The Recovery of the Constitution." All of the classes will be taught by Hillsdale College professors - the top teachers in their field and the same ones who instruct our students here on Hillsdale's campus.
Classes listed in Blue have been posted on YouTube and can be viewed by clicking on the link for each class below.

The U.S. Constitution
A Reader
Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.
Editorial Note: Just received a couple of copies of the reader. Not just a short course pamphlet this; with the heft of 'Atlas Shrugged', it is well worth getting whether or not you choose to take the course.
About Hillsdale College
Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."
Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs. Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012. |

The bad news is last month some well intentioned political activist announced a cut-off date for signing up co-sponsors for Rep. Rose Marie Swanger's American Law's for American Courts (HB 2029) in an effort to inject some urgency into the effort.
What it resulted in was an interruption of the campaign to encourage those Representatives not yet signed on as co-sponsors to join with those Legislators who have already recognized the death by smothering threat to our Constitution.
The good news is there is no cut-off date for adding co-sponsors and we are once again asking your readers to contact their representatives and ask they join the battle.
There are only three Representatives from Bucks who are co-sponsors, Representatives Clymer, Petri and Quinn and we thank them for showing their colors.
But that leaves seven more Representatives who appear to be still standing on the sidelines as the battle for our existence as a free people is joined.
Lame rhetoric? I'm afraid not. If you do not understand the threat we face from 'peaceful' opportunists like CAIR, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bucksafa11info/messages or contact me at bucksafa11@yahoo.com to schedule an Open the Koran presentation for you and your friends.
If you're ready to help, visit www.actforamerica.org and sign on as a chapter leader. It's free and the people there are friendly and helpful. Your help is needed. Every township, every neighborhood needs an Act! for America chapter leader.
But before you do anything, if your Pennsylvania Representative has not yet ssigned on as co-sponsor, urge her/him to do so and ask what is it that prevents him/her from doing so.
Help Pennsylvania be counted among those States that have shown the courage to face off with the enemies who have plainly stated their aim is to destroy our Nation. Our laws have worked just fine since colonial times. What is needed are politicians who respect them. And you know whose job it is to remind them of that.
Thanks,
John Ryan

CAIR's Fight Against Pennsylvania Foreign Law Bill
by David J. Rusin FrontPage Magazine February 13, 2012
http://www.islamist-watch.org/9192/cair-fight-against-pennsylvania-foreign-law-bill
Resistance to a new bill aimed at limiting foreign law in Pennsylvania courts serves as a case study of how Islamists and their allies operate: peddling falsehoods about Shari'a, painting Muslims as victims, and denying that anyone seeks to institutionalize aspects of Islamic law - even as they vigorously promote that very agenda. With similar legislation being debated across the U.S., understanding their tactics is critical.
At issue in Pennsylvania is House Bill (HB) 2029, which stipulates that "a tribunal shall not consider a foreign legal code or system which does not grant ... the same fundamental liberties, rights and privileges" as guaranteed by the federal and state constitutions. Introduced in November, it follows the American Laws for American Courts (ALAC) model and makes no mention of Shari'a. A preliminary memo sent to legislators last June in the name of Rep. RoseMarie Swanger, HB 2029's chief sponsor, does highlight Islamic law, but she later said that it had been circulated accidentally. Regardless, concerns about Shari'a are warranted due to its many provisions that conflict with the standards of American jurisprudence. For example, it disadvantages women in terms of inheritance, divorce, child custody, and other areas of family law. Shari'a already has shaped numerous cases nationwide, including in Pennsylvania, where one state court decided how assets should be distributed according to Islam.
Pushback against HB 2029 has been led by the Philadelphia office of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-PA) and was punctuated by an interfaith press conference (video here) at CAIR-PA headquarters on December 14. The overall campaign reflects CAIR's usual recipe of distortion, victimology, and contradiction between words and deeds.
Attacks on bills like HB 2029 begin by sowing confusion about Shari'a. Because Islamic law encompasses virtually every facet of life - governing personal activities such as eating and worship, but also forming an oppressive social and legal structure - suit-and-tie Islamists work to emphasize its unthreatening pieces whenever possible. CAIR-PA executive director Moein Khawaja's suggestion that Shari'a should worry Pennsylvanians no more than halal gyros is a fine example of this technique.

March 23rd, 2012, marks an important and unfortunate anniversary. It will have been exactly two years since President Obama forced his unpopular health care takeover onto the American people. Americans for Prosperity has educated the public about the dangers of government interference in the health care market for the past several years, and now the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments and make a ruling on that very issue. As you are most likely aware, the U.S. Supreme Court will be considering the constitutionality of several elements of the President's health care bill. This may be our best chance to overturn this offense against our health care freedoms. That's why Americans for Prosperity will be hosting a Hands Off My Health Care rally for free-market grassroots activists from across the country at the Supreme Court on March 27th. Details can be found below.

To Everyone Who Helped with Verify the Recall - Thank You!
Together We Conducted An Independent, Citizen-Led Audit of EPIC Scale
Proving That We the PeopleWill Stand in the Gap of Government to Uphold Election Integrity
Here's What You Accomplished IN 22 DAYS:
- 14,000+ volunteers joined in from 49 states
- 3.5 MILLION records were entered
- 192.2 GB total bandwidth
- 23,529,926 total requests
- 481,002 were attempted threats to the site
We proved that the unions had nowhere near the 1,000,000 signatures they touted - and that of the actual signatures turned in, at least 25% and possibly up to 40%, had critical errors.
Did the unions legitimately compile the 520,000 signatures necessary to trigger a recall election? We'll let the public decide.
Our goal was neither to support or negate the outcome - our goal was to uphold the integrity of the process.
Reports will be posted online on Monday, February 27th. You can check them out here.

From July 16 through July 18, 2012, Christians United for Israel will be holding its 7th Annual Washington Summit. We're going back to stand with Israel in our nation's capital. This year - more than ever - we need you to join us!
In the coming months, critical decisions are going to be made about Iran, Israel and the world. Finally, Washington is beginning to focus on the issue of a nuclear Iran. Many of our leaders want to confront this looming threat. But others want to keep kicking the can down the road. The debate is far from over.
- We know that when thousands of CUFI activists arrive in DC and on Capitol Hill, we can change the conversation.
- We can remind our leaders that a nuclear Iran is not only a threat to Israel, but to the US as well. And we can demonstrate to our elected officials that their constituents care enough about this issue to show up at their DC offices.
- We know that we can create a sense of immediacy that's otherwise lacking.
- We know that the more of us who show up and speak out -- the louder our voice and the greater our impact.
We stand at a critical juncture in history. Don't be silent! Don't miss your chance to make a difference! Don't pass up your opportunity to defend America and bless Israel!
Our leaders need to remember that we are watching them and we need to remember that God is watching us.
The time to speak out for Israel is now! Please register today for CUFI's 2012 DC Summit.

Thomas Jefferson: "Whensoever the general government assumes undelegated powers....a nullification of the act is the rightful remedy."
But what IS nullification? How does it happen and work? Since September 2010, the Tenth Amendment Center has been hosting a national tour to educate and activate people on this topic. People are learning the constitutional basis, when it's been used in history, and how it is happening around the country and how YOU can stop DC right in your own state.

John Stossel - May 2, 2012
The Union League of Philadelphia
Luncheon: 12:00 - 1:30PM

After years of obeying our parents, we are programmed to think that anytime there is a problem, whether it's companies going bankrupt or schools keeping kids stupid, government action is the way to solve it. Using his decades of reporting, Stossel tackles how those intuitive, knee-jerk reactions lead us astray.
Central planning sounds right. It feels good. But it has nothing to do with the realities of economics and science. There is nothing that government can do that we cannot do better as free individuals - and as groups of individuals, working together voluntarily, not at the point of a gun or under threat of a fine. Without big government, our possibilities are limitless.

The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:
- Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
- Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
- Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care
The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

Deception, betrayal, and dishonesty. These are not appealing traits in elected officials, but sadly, they aptly describe many Republican lawmakers across the country feverishly working to implement ObamaCare. Would you believe that Governor Tom Corbett is among those Republicans diligently complying with ObamaCare? Despite the fact that Pennsylvania is party to the lawsuit being heard before the Supreme Court, Tom Corbett is implementing the law in our state. ObamaCare requires that each state set up what is known as a Health Insurance Exchange. In theory, these exchanges will be one-stop online shops where individuals will pool together to purchase insurance. Without a state-created exchange, the individual mandate cannot be enforced. As in all bureaucracies, there are some major downfalls, not the least of which is the anticipated spike in the cost of insurance. Other significant issues include: - The federal government will dictate what insurers may participate
- The federal government will decide minimum coverage-potentially including such elective procedures as breast augmentation and face lifts
- The federal government will stipulate how the exchange is run
I could go on, but I'm certain you recognize the theme. The federal government will control every aspect of our health care. Yet, Governor Corbett claims that establishing CorbettCare will protect Pennsylvania citizens from undue federal regulation. The opposite is actually true. Creation of the CorbettCare Exchange does great harm and forces onerous federal regulations on our state. Governor Corbett is readily ceding state Sovereignty to the central government, and relinquishing all authority on health care matters. Our state has already requested and accepted over $33 million to set up the exchange! Merely accepting and spending federal funds requires absolute obedience to federal government regulations, and the loss of state sovereignty. A key responsibility of state officials is to protect our sovereignty, yet our legislators may be considering legislation to assist in the establishment of CorbettCare. And like obedient little children, these turncoats expect you to forget their empty promises, ignore their campaign rhetoric, and blame the Federal Government for all of the many losses you will suffer as a result. Click here to sign the petition demanding that the over $33 million in grant funds be returned and all contingency plans to submit to ObamaCare be abandoned immediately! If you'd like to tell Governor Corbett how you feel about this scheme, you can reach him at 717-787-2500. There are over 1 billion reasons why some states are establishing these exchanges-and each reason has a dollar sign attached. With over $1 billion at stake, and more than $700 million already sent to complicit states, it's easy to understand why greedy politicians have their hands out before the court can rule. These funds are being used all over the country to enrich political allies and the well-connected. Millions of your taxpayer dollars are being wasted, and you are footing the bill while they steal your freedoms. Those hundreds of millions will never be returned to our treasury-unless you and I do something to force the issue now. Tell your legislators that even if the Supreme Court fails to overturn ObamaCare, you expect them to protect your rights and jealously guard our state sovereignty by refusing to establish a state exchange. For Liberty, Deb Wells Interim State Coordinator Alabama Campaign for Liberty P.S. After you sign the petition demanding our state return all ObamaCare Exchange grant funds, please pass this message along to your contacts!

1. A Case Study in Why Republicans Do Not Fear Conservatives The primary battle for Illinois's 16th Congressional District is a case study in why Republicans do not fear conservatives and do not take conservatives seriously in the House of Representatives. Consider, if you will, that what Jim DeMint has done in the United States Senate is make Republicans understand they might just be seriously challenged by candidates and major money if they go too far astray. After Bob Bennett went down to defeat by Mike Lee and the Republican favorite Trey Grayson went down to defeat by Rand Paul in Kentucky, suddenly Orrin Hatch became the junior partner in Utah's conservative renaissance. The House Republican Leaders don't much care. They do not have to. Conservatives, time and time again, will not put their money where their mouth is. They like to fight policy battles, but sit out the political fights.
2. Harry Reid launches the Democratic war on Math Harry Reid, the floor leader of the Democrats in the United States Senate, the most influential Democrat in the entire Congress, is innumerate. You see, he not only lacks an understanding of mathematics, apparently having no understanding of what kinds of sample sizes are needed to get an accurate sense of American public opinion, but he is also actively promoting his anti-math viewpoint against statistical, scientific polling. Innumeracy is a real problem in America, said to be associated with problems like belief in pseudoscience, higher debt, problem gambling, and limited job prospects. Sadly, America is already suffering some of these consequences under the poor leadership of Harry Reid and his party. Since Harry Reid took over the Senate our debt has indeed skyrocketed, thanks in part to the failure of the Harry Reid Senate even to pass a budget at all, America's job prospects have diminished, and the fad of global warming pseudoscience has continued unabated. It's easy to see why Clark County, Nevada wanted to return him to the Senate though, since innumeracy is what keeps the lights on there. I don't understand why we must endure him as our Senate Majority Leader any more, though. Let's take the Senate and knock him off in November. 3. Reid Wants to Attach Export-Import Bank Provision to Bipartisan Jobs Bill Last week, the House passed a slam-dunk jobs bill (H.R. 3606) 390-23. The bill reduces red tape, securities regulations, and reporting requirements on small companies that desire to go public. It also eliminated some of the new regulations implemented under Dodd-Frank and Sarbanes-Oxley on companies that generate less than $1 billion in annual revenue. With all the unctuous complaints about partisanship, one would expect the Senate to harness this rare opportunity to work together and pass the bill expeditiously. With Harry Reid in charge of the Senate, all bets are off. Reid announced that he would bring the House bill to the floor, but would attempt to attach a non-germane amendment to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank, which expires May 31, through 2015 and raise its loan limit from $100 billion to $140 billion. He is taking a no-brainer bill and sinking it with a poison pill. What's worse, the consideration of the House jobs bill was supposed to be the prize to Republicans for agreeing not to block Obama's judicial nominees that are being rammed through the Senate in short order. Unfortunately, the Ex-Im corporate welfare bank is not necessarily a poison pill for many Republicans. In typical pale-pastel fashion, House leaders planned to bring a separate Ex-Im bill to the floor that would enact one-year reauthorization at $113 billion. 4. Mitt Romney: Winning, But Not Getting More Popular After last night's contests, it's time to update my running tallies of the popular vote in the GOP presidential primary and see what further conclusions can be drawn. I continue to break out the votes in three groups - the five conservative candidates (Santorum, Gingrich, Perry, Bachmann and Cain), the two moderate candidates (Romney and Hunstman) and the libertarian (Paul) - for reasons explained in my last post. Also, the numbers through Super Tuesday have changed slightly from the last post, as more complete tallies in some states have become available. This time I'm including the Wyoming results in the totals, but not the tiny vote totals from the territories (the Northern Mariana Islands and U.S. Virgin Islands; no popular vote totals are available from Guam or American Samoa).

Instead of "Progressive," always use the words "Oppressive" or "Regressive."
When called on this, feign puzzlement. "But how is it progress to steal free citizens' liberties, money, and hope, and hand it all over to government bureaucrats?"

ZOA Praises Palestinian Villagers Who Refused to Shelter Terrorists
The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has praised Palestinian villagers in the town of Azamut, near Nablus, who refused to shelter two Palestinian terrorists who had attempted to enter the nearby Jewish town of Elon Moreh to carry out an attack with knives on local Jewish residents. The terrorists were chased by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) personnel to Azamut, where the terrorists attempted to hide. They were refused shelter by several of the residents and eventually turned over to the IDF by the headmaster of the local school (Yair Altman, 'Elon Moreh: Stabbing attack foiled; 2 arrested,' Yediot Achronot, March 5, 2012).
ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, "We commend the Palestinian villagers and headmaster who refused to grant sanctuary to these terrorists.
"They have shown themselves to be very different from their leaders, like the late Yasser Arafat or Mahmoud Abbas, both of whom have knowingly given refuge to wanted Palestinian terrorists in the Muqata, the PA presidential palace.
"Unfortunately, numerous pols have shown that a majority of Palestinians do not accept Israel as a Jewish state and refuse to live in peace alongside here or to abjure terrorism. Worse, they support terrorism, celebrate and glorify terrorists and hand out sweets when innocent Israelis are murdered by them.
"If more Palestinians behaved like these villagers and the school headmaster, Palestinian society would be very different, and peace might even be a real possibility."

'All the Israeli Cities:' Saddam's Taped Order for Targeting WMDs
It was January 1991. Half a million U.S. and allied troops were deployed in Saudi Arabia ready to roll north.
Backed by a vote just taken - or about to be taken - in Congress and a U.N. Security Council resolution, President George H.W. Bush had delivered an ultimatum to Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein: Withdraw your forces from Kuwait by Jan. 15 - or else.
The week before the deadline, Saddam met with his air force commander, Muzahim Sa'b Hasan al Masiri, and his son-in-law, Husayn Kamil - the minister responsible for Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
Saddam tape-recorded the conversation. More than a dozen years later, the Iraq Survey Group, headed by Charles Duelfer, a special assistant to the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, discovered the recording and translated it.

Obama's war on Christians and Jews started before he was elected
Mar 14, 2012 08:29 am | Coach Collins
By Kevin "Coach" Collins Obama's hatful war against America's mainstream religions has been in full rage since the spring of 2008. This is a list of his attacks. April 2008 - Obama speaks disrespectfully of Christians, saying they "cling to guns or religion" and have an "antipathy to people who aren't like them." 1
February 2009 - Obama announces plans to revoke conscience protection for health workers who refuse to participate in medical activities that go against their beliefs, and fully implements the plan in February 2011. 2
April 2009 - When speaking at Georgetown University, Obama orders that a monogram symbolizing Jesus' name be covered when he is making his speech. 3
May 2009 - Obama declines to host services for the National Prayer Day (a day established by federal law) at the White House. 4
April 2009 - In a deliberate act of disrespect, Obama nominated three pro-abortion ambassadors to the Vatican; of course, the ... Continue Reading:Obama's war on Christians and Jews started before he was elected

Opposing liquor, drunkenness and abortion, Susan encountered mobs, armed threats, objects thrown at her and was hung in effigy. After the Civil War, Susan B. Anthony worked hard for the passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments. She succeeded in having women admitted to the University of Rochester and was arrested for voting in the 1872 Presidential Election. Fourteen years after her death, women won the right to vote. El Paso Mayor overrules voters, threatens opponents with jail
Mar 13, 2012 01:00 pm | Coach Collins
by Doug Book, staff writer
In a display of the arrogance of power for which the left have become so well known, Democrat El Paso Mayor John Cook decided not only to overrule the results of a 2010 ballot decision, he is hoping to jail those who dared circulate a recall petition in response to his contempt for the will of the voters.
In 2009, Mayor Cook and a majority of the El Paso city council decided that health insurance benefits should be provided for unmarried and homosexual "partners" of city employees, at taxpayer expense of course. Church groups and others opposed to the decision gathered the necessary petition signatures to put the issue on the 2010 ballot.
By a 55-45 margin, El Paso voters passed the ballot proposition which stated: "The city of El Paso endorses traditional family values by making health benefits available only to city employees and their legal spouse and dependent ... When I went to sleep last night, little did I know that while outside sirens competed with car alarms in the symphony that is New York City, I had already been declared a hate group. Being declared a hate group wasn't in my plans for the day, but like winning the lottery, it seems to be one of those things that happens when you least expect it. Except that as the little bald man in front of the bodega tells you, you have to play to win, but you don't even have to buy a ticket to be declared an official hate group. My first response on finding out that I was now a hate group was to look around to see where everyone else was. A hate group needs the group part and one man and a cat don't seem to be enough. Even when the cat is a well known bigot who hates mice, birds, car alarms that go off in the middle of the night, the plumber and sudden noises. Still the Southern Poverty Law Center had listed, "Sultan Knish a blog by Daniel Greenfield" as one of their Active Anti-Muslim Hate Groups, alongside such other vast organizations as "Faith Freedom", a website for ex-Muslims, and "Casa D'Ice Signs", the signs on a bar located on K-Mart Plaza in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Someone with less faith in the fact checking abilities of the Southern Poverty Law Center might have thought that whoever had made up this list had no clue that "Casa D'Ice" was a lounge with signs outside, that there was no such group as "Casa D'Ice Signs" and that signs are pieces of plastic and not a hate group. But I had faith that the Center knew more than I did. Perhaps its crack team of researchers had learned that the signs had come alive and formed their own hate group, somehow arranging their own letters to form messages about illegal immigration and the need to get out of Iraq. My first thought was to wonder whether some mistake had been made in my own case, but the Southern Poverty Law Center people are experts on hate groups, even if they don't seem to know what the definitions of "hate" or "groups" or "hate groups" might be. Even if they seem to have copied their list off a forum somewhere at the last minute to have something to show the donors. Clearly I was now a hate group and with tax season upon us, I called my accountant to find out if there was a tax deduction for that. There wasn't.

"If we move in mass, be it ever so circuitously, we shall attain our object; but if we break into squads, everyone pursuing the path he thinks most direct, we become an easy conquest to those who can now barely hold us in check." --Thomas Jefferson

Editor's Note: The Patriot Post has not endorsed any GOP candidate in the primary.
"If this was match play golf, Rick Santorum would be seven shots down with six holes to play. He has indeed played the last three holes wonderfully well, winning in Kansas, Mississippi, and Alabama, but Romney's sweeps in the far flung islands of Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands, his wins in Hawaii and American Samoa, plus the former Massachusetts governor's relatively strong showing in the southern brace of states means that over the past week the delegate math didn't change and neither did the inevitable result of the GOP nominating contest. Indeed, when all the sums are added, Romney won more delegates in the days since Super Tuesday than did Santorum. ... President Obama can be beaten. The next few weeks can be part of a very deliberate and useful turning of attention to his woeful tenure and the awful prospect of another four years under his ruinous fecklessness. No towels have to be thrown in, but each candidate has to consider the party as a whole and not just his own standing within it." --columnist Hugh Hewitt
"To be clear, Romney is still the overwhelming favorite to win the Republican nomination given his lead in delegates, but [Tuesday] he lost another chance to put the final nail in the coffin of his opponents by proving he could win on unfriendly turf. Santorum's twin victories in the deep south, which was supposed to be Newt Gingrich's territory, strengthens his argument that it's a two man race between himself and Romney, with him playing the role of the first choice of conservatives. ... The bottom line is that [Tuesday's] results reinforce the fact that it's going to be a long slog toward the nomination for Romney and this race isn't going to be over anytime soon." --columnist Philip Klein
Were you surprised by last night's outcome, and how does it change the race?
"When it was being debated, Democrats told you [Obamacare] would cost $940 billion over ten years, because they think you're stupid. But now, with more years of fully-bloomed Obamacare inside the ten-year budget window, the CBO is out with new cost estimates. They ain't pretty: ... '[T]he ten-year cost of the law's core provisions to expand health insurance coverage has now ballooned to $1.76 trillion. That's because we now have estimates for Obamacare's first nine years of full implementation, rather than the mere six when it was signed into law.' ... [T]he true ten-year cost is going to be still higher. To me, the question has never been whether Obamacare will fail (by failing to bend the cost curve, by incurring massive per-person costs for its coverage expansion, and by foisting things like IPAB on the public). Rather, the question has been whether it will fail quickly and spectacularly enough that the political will is toward repeal, and not expansion. If it fails slowly, we're likely to see more of it, not less." --columnist Daniel Foster
"The latest mass killing by an American soldier follows a three-year downward spiral.... After ten years, we have forgotten why we went into Afghanistan in the first place.... Now, even before the latest disaster, there is no public support for staying in Afghanistan. And yet to leave is to envision choppers on the embassy roof, Vietnam-style, as the Taliban lets loose on women, liberals, and the American supporters in the larger cities. ... The president should either put Afghanistan on the front burner, quit apologizing, seek diplomatic and military continuity, spell out to the people exactly what our aims and methods are, assume the role of commander-in-chief, cease all talk of withdrawal, and define, as it could be defined, 'victory' -- or simply get out, declare a teleprompted hope-and-change-style victory, and not put Americans in harm's way in a war that was more a 2008 campaign trope than a serious conflict to be won." --historian Victor Davis Hanson
Editorial Exegesis
"Feminists are declaring a sex strike for Obamacare-subsidized birth control. The group Liberal Ladies Who Lunch is organizing 'Access Denied,' a week-long exercise in self-denial starting April 28. The strike is supposed to motivate men to stand up for government-funded birth control 'because when we lose our reproductive choices, so do they.' This is akin to protesting welfare cuts by getting a job. ... In this case, activists are abandoning the activity that causes their supposed need for the birth-control handout. ... Conservatives should applaud the strike. Abstention is well-regarded on the right, and not simply because it is 100 percent effective in preventing unwanted pregnancies. Taking a week off from promiscuity may give young women an opportunity to think about their life choices. Perhaps there is more to being a woman than ensuring the government supplies the means to engage in limitless hookups. Nursing chastity for a week puts necessary perspective on the type of subsidized sexuality that's at the center of the debate." --The Washington Times

When it's okay to use racist language: "So what happens in Crackerland [read: the South] this week, as we like to say? We have, what, Alabama and Mississippi coming up [Tuesday]." --progressive radio talk-show host Stephanie Miller
Civil discourse: "You know, these [conservative] women, somebody really needs to go repossess their ovaries. Really, truly, they have no right to them. They are fabulous, little organs and they have absolutely no right to be estrogen-bearing beings. Okay? Just cut 'em off, let 'em go through the hot flashes, let 'em just sit there and complain about hormone therapy, okay? Just take the ovaries and get it over with. Because they don't deserve to have estrogen. They really don't. It's a privilege." --radio talk-show host Randi Rhodes
If anyone is waging war on women, it's the Left: "Republican politicians have pursued their assault on Mr. Obama, the left and any American who disagrees with them for years now. There are finally signs that they may pay a price for the casual cruelty with which they attack whole segments of society. Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican of Alaska, said on Tuesday that the Republicans have left people thinking they are at war with women. Women are right to think that." --New York Times editorial
What free speech? "The Rush Limbaugh Show is being broadcast to troops on bases all over the world. However, America has too much at stake, to allow this seedy, ugly-spirited man to roll around in the minds of vulnerable young men. These soldiers are thousands of miles from home, getting shot at by an enemy indistinguishable from our Afghan allies, for a war whose rationale nobody even remembers any more. They need something better than an education in anti-Muslim hatred." --professor Constance Hilliard of the University of North Texas in an article titled, "Did Soldier Who Killed 16 in Afghanistan Receive His Diploma from the Rush Limbaugh Show?"

The BIG Lie: "Since I walked in the door as secretary of energy, I've been doing everything in our powers to do what we can to reduce these gas prices. ... So, of course we don't want the price of gasoline to go up; we want it to go down." --Energy Secretary Steven Chu
With a straight face: "'Let's Move!' is not about having government tell people what to do, because government doesn't have all the answers." --Michelle Obama
Chutzpah: "Andrew Breitbart, self-described media mogul, had several screws loose or missing and was the grinning bomb-thrower of the radical right. He was the attack dog kept on a tight leash and brought out on special occasions to hiss and to menace." --Bill Ayers, radical leftist Obama mentor and a literal bomb-thrower, not just a metaphorical one
In the tank for Obama: "The negative for me was there were too many accomplishments. I had 17 minutes to put them all in there. ... I don't [find fault in him], frankly. I'm really quite in awe of him as a leader and the choices he's made." --Davis Guggenheim, director of the new documentary on Barack Obama
Short Cuts
"If the left really cared about women, they have lots of misogyny on their own side to police without ever having to worry about conservatives. Plus, their own side might actually listen to them. But they tolerated a Senator who left a woman to drown in a car. And enthusiastically supported a president who sexually harassed women and dismissed accusations of rape against him. And just look at how they treat Sarah Palin. So if a liberal says he cares about women, tell him, 'You care about women the same way I care about your face.' Then punch him really hard in the face." --humorist Frank J. Fleming
"President Obama compared himself to Gandhi and Nelson Mandela in the struggle to bring about change. The comparison is flawed. They spent years in jail before taking political power, while politicians from Chicago do it the other way around." --comedian Argus Hamilton
"One of Warren Buffet's companies owes the government $300 million in unpaid taxes. So that's why Buffet doesn't mind higher taxes on the rich: He's not gonna pay 'em anyway." --NewsBusted's Jodi Miller
"The Air Force is pulling nine cargo aircraft from military operations to support President Obama's stepped-up visits to campaign events. Good. Now he can carry his entire ego with him on the trail." --Fred Thompson
"They say gasoline could be $6 a gallon. But the good news is the White House says President Obama is aware of the problem, and will continue to talk about it between fundraisers." --comedian Jay Leno

The NAACP joins in to take voter-ID insanity to the United Nations.
The Far Left is making an unprecedented two-track move to derail states' efforts to protect the integrity of the ballot box for this November's elections. While the Department of Justice (DOJ) is blocking state efforts, liberal activists are taking this issue to the United Nations as a human rights violation. Attorney General Eric Holder is invoking Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) as giving him the power to block Texas' voter-ID law, which simply requires that voters show that they are who they say they are before they cast a vote to influence an election outcome. This is the same argument Holder made to block South Carolina's voter-ID law, a move that has landed him in federal court. Section 5 of VRA was designed to allow DOJ to have oversight of southern states that had been characterized by widespread voter suppression half a century ago, a move the Supreme Court upheld in 1966 as being authorized by the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution only due to the extraordinary racial tensions at the time, but that would not be constitutional once American society progressed beyond such struggles. (In fact, a lawsuit is currently pending before the D.C. Circuit federal appeals court challenging the constitutionality of Section 5. So there's a good chance that provision will no longer be on the books two years from now.)

The entitlement mentality is tearing our nation apart!
Friend -- I'm going to Temple. After my experience at a university in Texas where black students turned their back on me as I told my story, I want to tell you that I reached out to a young black man at the next school I visited: UCLA. He told me that he grew up in the inner-city and believed the lie of the left because he never heard anything different.
His conservative roommate convinced him to come to my speech, even though the liberal group on campus was sponsoring a rival event targeted to pull black students away. This black young man came and found himself surprisingly agreeing with me as I spoke. For the first time in his life, he was exposed to conservative principles told by someone he could relate to. He came up to me after my speech and he was visibly shaking and totally changed. And it was because of the support of you and people like you that I was able to speak to him.

Was Fluke dragged out of obscurity after the women of America took a vote and chose her as our spokeswoman? Please, Sandra, we know how deeply private, publicity-shy and terribly busy with law school you are, but we need you to speak for us!
I don't think that happened. Rather, Fluke is the latest in a long line of my absolute favorite liberal typology: hysterical drama queens.

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 237 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS Santorum's True Grits The Republican presidential nomination battle took yet another turn last night as Senator Rick Santorum won hard-fought battles in Alabama and Mississippi. Virtually every analyst had predicted either that Gingrich would win because of his Southern roots or that Romney would prevail as Gingrich and Santorum split conservatives. In fact, Romney was so confident yesterday he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer, "Senator Santorum is at the desperate end of his campaign." They were all wrong. In both states, Santorum received a plurality of women, strong conservatives, values voters, those making less than $50,000 a year and voters making between $50,000 and $100,000. Romney won voters making over $100,000, self-described moderates as well as those who were not strong supporters of the Tea Party movement. The Santorum victories put pressure on both of the other credible candidates. (Paul isn't credible. He got 5% of the vote in Alabama and 4% in Mississippi.) Once again, Romney was shown to be a "front-runner" that cannot ignite the base of the party. Gingrich lost his claim to a Southern base and is under mounting pressure to step aside so that voters can have a simple one-on-one choice for the party's nomination. The next few days provide additional opportunities for Santorum. Missouri holds caucuses March 17th to officially award its delegates. Santorum did well in last month's non-binding Missouri primary. Louisiana votes on March 24th and has a large "values voter" electorate. The biggest state coming up on the primary calendar is Illinois, which votes on March 20th. It should be friendly to Romney, but that is no longer a sure thing. As I watched the returns last night, I was reminded of a question in yesterday's New York Times/CBS poll that received virtually no attention. Respondents were asked whether each candidate understood the needs and problems of people like them. Sadly, a sizeable majority said Obama did understand their needs and problems. For Santorum it was a virtual tie with an equal number thinking he did and did not understand their needs and problems. But the Romney numbers should set off alarm bells about the governor leading the GOP ticket in the fall. Only 31% thought Mitt Romney understood people like them, while 59% said he did not. Those numbers could be deadly in the general election. Last night, I went on CNBC's "The Kudlow Report" to have a friendly discussion about the GOP race with former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlently and Larry Kudlow, an old friend from the Reagan Administration. If you missed the show last night, you can watch my segment here. I also have a column today at Politico on the secrets of Santorum's success. ObamaCare Costs Skyrocket Gas prices aren't the only thing skyrocketing these days. The cost of ObamaCare is going up too. The Congressional Budget Office reported yesterday that by 2022, ObamaCare is estimated to cost $1.76 trillion and run a deficit of more than $500 billion. That is nearly twice the $900 billion price tag that President Obama proposed in a 2009 address to a joint session of Congress. And we know the pathetic record of government cost estimates. Meanwhile the Heritage Foundation noted these "gems" in the report:
- "...the individual mandate penalties will increase by one-third, or $11 billion."
- "CBO also finds that more employers will choose not to offer coverage. The mandate penalties on firms will increase by 18.5 percent, or $15 billion, as these firms find it more efficient to pay a penalty."
- "...government is projected to collect $80 billion more in income taxes over the next 10 years" on the assumption that as employers drop their health insurance they will compensate employees with higher wages, which Uncle Sam will tax.
- Lastly, "There are 3 million fewer people receiving employer-provided coverage... There will also be 2 million fewer individuals in the exchange."
This is just one more example of why America cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama. Radical Journalist Admits Environmentalism = Socalism Many conservatives have argued for years that a goal of the radical environmentalist movement is to destroy free enterprise. That is the inescapable conclusion you reach when you connect the dots and consider the consequences of all their initiatives. For example, Barack Obama unbelievably admitted that his cap and trade plan would "bankrupt" coal companies and cause "electricity rates [to] necessarily skyrocket." Rarely, however, do liberals and environmentalists freely admit that their real goal is to turn America into a socialist state. But Naomi Klein, a left-wing journalist at The Nation did just that in a recent interview with Solutions Journal. Consider this excerpt:
"Q. In your cover story for The Nation last year, you say that modern environmentalism successfully advances many of the causes dear to the political left, including redistribution of wealth, higher and more progressive taxes, and greater government intervention and regulation. Please explain. "A. The piece came out of ... my shock at the fact that belief in climate change in the United States has plummeted. ...So I started researching the denial movement ... and what's clear is that, on the right, climate change is seen as ... a Marxist plot. They accuse climate scientists of being watermelons -- green on the outside and red on the inside. "Q. It seems exaggerated, but your piece was about how the right is in fact correct. "A. ...You can set up carbon markets, consumer markets, and just pretend, but if you want to get serious about climate change, really serious, ... then you need to be intervening strongly in the economy, and you can't do it all with carbon markets and offsetting. You have to really seriously regulate corporations and invest in the public sector. ...These climate deniers aren't crazy -- their worldview is under threat. If you take climate change seriously, you do have to throw out the free-market playbook." [Emphasis added.]
It is hard to state it more bluntly than that. If you believe in free markets, your "worldview is under threat" from those who are "really serious" about the environmentalist movement. Not surprisingly, Klein goes on to describe the Occupy Wall Street movement as "a game changer, and it has opened up space for us to put more radical solutions on the table." My friends, it is no accident that the top priorities of our "community organizer in chief" were ObamaCare and cap and trade. It is no accident that he blocked the Keystone pipeline and restricted drilling and exploration while he subsidized Solyndra and promotes algae as an alternative to gasoline. It is all part of his plan to "fundamentally transform" America into a European-style socialist welfare state. If you believe in freedom and prosperity, if you want your children and grandchildren to enjoy the freedoms and prosperity we have always taken for granted in this country, Barack Obama must be defeated in 237 days! Many of you have asked what you can do to make sure we win. Of course it is important to financially support conservative groups like CWF. But we also need to make sure we educate more voters about exactly what is at stake this November. Start by "adopting" a voter in your family, perhaps a college-aged son or daughter or grandchild. If every conservative would convert just one 2008 Obama voter, we would win in a landslide!

Senate Rejects New Green Subsidies
|
With your help, Heritage Action and conservatives all across America ensured that new market-distorting green energy subsidies would not be enacted. We've led the successful charge against the NAT GAS Act and now those who want big government to pick winners and losers are reeling.
>> Help us keep the pressure on as we fight big government.
When Senators Richard Burr (R-NC) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) announced they would offer the long-stalled NAT GAS Act as an amendment to the Senate transportation bill, Heritage Action went on offense. We immediately told conservatives that this amendment was no different than subsidies for windmills, solar panels and hybrid cars.
Conservatives sprung into action, and in just over two days, 2,400 conservatives like you placed over 4,500 calls to the Senate, telling them to oppose the amendment.
Yesterday, thanks to you, the Senate rejected the amendment.
>> Don't stop now: stand with us as we continue to fight big government.
With your help, we are changing the way Washington works. We are breaking the corrupt nexus that exists between big government and big business, and putting an end to their big-spending, market-distorting ways.
And with your continued support, we will keep holding Congress accountable.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Needham Chief Executive Officer Heritage Action for America

Red Tape Rising: Obama-Era Regulation at the Three-Year Mark
By James Gattuso and Diane Katz
Abstract: During the first three years of the Obama Administration, 106 new major federal regulations added more than $46 billion per year in new costs for Americans. This is almost four times the number-and more than five times the cost-of the major regulations issued by George W. Bush during his first three years. Hundreds more regulations are winding through the rulemaking pipeline as a consequence of the Dodd-Frank financial-regulation law, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and the Environmental Protection Agency's global warming crusade, threatening to further weaken an anemic economy and job creation. Congress must increase scrutiny of regulations-existing and new. Reforms should include requiring congressional approval of major rules and mandatory sunset clauses for major regulations.
In January 2011, President Barack Obama announced, with much fanfare, a new get-tough policy on overregulation. Acknowledging that "rules have gotten out of balance" and "have had a chilling effect on growth and jobs," he pledged a comprehensive review of regulations imposed by the federal government.[1] Despite this promise of restraint, however, the torrent of new rules and regulations from Washington continued throughout 2011, with 32 new major regulations.[2] These new rules increase regulatory costs by almost $10 billion annually along with another $6.6 billion in one-time implementation costs.

Morning Bell: Harry Reid Opts for Political Theater on Judicial Nominees
Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has rightfully earned the reputation of running a do-nothing Senate. More than 1,000 days have elapsed since the upper chamber approved a budget. He's currently ignoring the House-passed JOBS Act and actively opposing steps to lower gas prices.
Now, in a blatant political stunt, Reid is attempting to blame the Republican minority for the Senate's failure to confirm 17 of President Obama's district court nominees.
"Republicans have refused to allow us to even vote - won't even allow us to vote - on these qualified judicial nominees," Reid declared. "Republicans have prevented the Senate from doing its constitutional duty and that's what it is."
Reid should be commended for his hyperbole.
Let's begin with the fact that Reid is majority leader, the one who sets the Senate's agenda and determines the floor schedule. So if Reid is unsatisfied with the pace of progress on Obama's nominees, then he has only himself to blame.

Our TV/radio ad & grassroots campaign are stirring up some signs of panic among the supporters of illegal foreign workers NumbersUSA is creating 'crisis of near doomsday proportions,' says coalition of illegal-alien-hiring businesses A Big Ag coalition apparently believes that you and we are threatening to have some success in our campaign against Speaker Boehner and his blocking of E-Verify legislation. The Save America's Food and Economy coalition (SAFE) has just issued an urgent national release criticizing NumbersUSA's ad campaign. It refers to SAFE President Craig J. Regelbrugge's speech before growers, manufacturers and agriculture experts at the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, California. SAFE announced: "(Regelbrugge) expressed concern that misguided organizations like NumbersUSA, a group fanning the flames of fear and division on the immigration reform debate, will end up causing the destruction of struggling farms and the communities that rely on them. "NumbersUSA recently announced a major advertising campaign targeting Congressional districts, including House Speaker John Boehners Ohio district, to scare members of Congress into voting for an immediate E-Verify mandate on employers and the economy. "SAFE argues NumbersUSA is sabotaging America's food independence and security by threatening Speaker Boehner into forcing passage of Rep. Lamar Smiths (R-TX) Legal Workforce Act or H.R. 2885." Congratulations to all of you who have faxed in this campaign. Even more congrats to those of you who have made phone calls. And fireworks salutes to those of you who have now visited your Congressman's local office about this. Below, I'll get back to the fascinating attack on our campaign. Let me just say quickly, though, that:
- Fewer than 5% of illegal aliens work in agriculture. E-Verify is primarily about opening up non-ag jobs to unemployed Americans.
- If E-Verify passes, farmers would have to either hire American workers or apply for legal foreign guestworkers through the unlimited federal guest ag-worker H-2A visa. There would be no reason for any shortage of legal farm workers.
- The ag lobbies' greed for illegal labor is their reason to fight daily to keep E-Verify from being used to open up the construction and service jobs that are eagerly sought among the 20 million Americans who can't find a job or are forced into part-time labor.
4 WAYS TO FAN THE FLAMES SOME MORE Here are ways you can further "fan the flames" of fear that Congress is going to force millions of Americans to remain unemployed so unscrupulous employers can continue to hire illegal aliens. Let's especially fan the flames of fear in these hirers of illegal aliens that they may have to start employing legal workers. ACTION NO. 1 -- FAXES: Nearly all of you will find brand new faxes to send, posted on your customized NumbersUSA Action Board. It is really important during this campaign that your Representatives see a constant stream of constituency communication coming over their fax machines. Your faxes are tailored to your Representative's political party and track record. SEND FAX: www.NumbersUSA.com/actionbuffet ACTION NO. 2 -- PETITION BOEHNER DIRECTLY: You folks outside Ohio rarely get a chance to communicate directly with the Speaker of the House. Here's your chance. More than 23,000 have signed since we posted last night. SIGN PETITION: www.numbersusa.com/petition?ID=42 ACTION NO. 3 -- SHARE PETITION WITH OTHERS: We really need tens of thousands of new people joining this campaign if we are going to have success. Polls show that if you were to show this petition to strangers on the street, only one out of every 8 of them would object to national mandatory E-Verify. REFER THE PETITION TO OTHERS: https://www.numbersusa.com/petition?action=get_referrals&ID=42 ACTION NO. 4 -- WATCH OUR CAMPAIGN UPDATE ON OUR WEEKLY THURSDAY WEBCAST: Watch it live or in replay. If you click now, you can watch last week's webcast of the intriguing way House leaders are trying to dodge our campaign. WATCH THE WEBCAST AT 3:30 P.M. (EASTERN TIME): https://www.NumbersUSA.tv Although no House Republican leader will admit it publicly, we are told from many sources that Big Ag lobbyists (and campaign contributors) are playing an important role in the blocking of mandatory E-Verify. The SAFE coalition represents that point of view and the outsized influence that California growers have on our nation's immigration policy. Isn't it outrageous to have a group of businesses proudly admit that they are serial lawbreakers -- and then use their criminality as an excuse for allowing them to continue in their outlaw ways? Look what the SAFE coalition admitted in their national diatribe against NumbersUSA: "Nearly 70% of farm employees are unauthorized, yet skilled and experienced migrant workers who are responsible for the nations food production. "The current version of E-Verify without a 'workable solution for farms,' says Regelbrugge, 'would effectively kill America's agriculture.' "'This is a crisis of near doomsday proportions,' warned Regelbrugge. 'Congress and the American people won't realize what happened until it is too late.' "Regelbrugge reminded the audience about Georgia, where the state has lost hundreds of millions in crops and economic activity because of a one-sided state law that has E-Verify at the centerpiece." This is a particularly interesting claim about Georgia, which appears to be greatly exaggerated. A state commission that studied Georgia's farms found indeed that there had been some losses because farmers had not prepared well enough in advance for the fact that bands of roving illegal aliens wouldn't just show up as usual. But if there were some ag losses in Georgia, there was no collapse of the industry. The state study found large percentages of farmers didn't even know the H-2A visa existed. This year, the only reason for a scarcity of farm workers in Georgia will be because farmers were too stubborn or too inefficient to figure out how to contract for legal workers in the same way that North Carolina farmers have done for years. Which puts a lie to this fantastic claim by the SAFE ag lobby: "If (H.R. 2885) passed today without an agricultural solution, over two-thirds of America's skilled farm workforce would disappear almost overnight. The country would find itself relying more on food production from places like China, which has already increased its fruit and vegetable exports to the U.S. by 555% over 10 years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "We support the need to reform a troubled immigration system, with effective enforcement included," said Regelbrugge. "But, let's be smart about it. These groups are playing with fire and risking the economy. Poll after poll shows that the economy and jobs are the number one priority for voters in fact, only 5% of Americans rank immigration at the top of their list of important issues. So, why is NumbersUSA forcing the issue? And why would Congress let them?" I hope all of you read this screed against us as a great sign that you are making progress. It should be noted that the No. 3 House Republican leader -- Rep. McCarthy of Bakerfield, Calif. -- is somebody that the big growers have felt like they could count on in the past. Imagine their shock to see Rep. McCarthy's staff starting to tell those of you who called his office during the last week that he does NOT oppose the mandatory E-Verify bill. The Ag Lobby seems to indicate that McCarthy has been "scared" by you into going pro-E-Verify. Now, you can see the enormous pressure he will be under to renege on that position. That means you Californians have to continue to call him (202-224-3121) and urge him to do the right thing. H.R. 2885 is exceptionally lenient with the Big Growers. It gives them two years longer than most large employers (three years after enactment) to E-Verify all their workers. That should be far more than enough time for any farmer to either figure out how to use the H-2A system or to join a co-op that will do it for them. FRIENDS, YOU ARE THE ONLY FORCE THAT THREATENS THE STATUS QUO OF UNENDING ILLEGAL LABOR IN OUR NATION'S FIELDS, FACTORIES, CONSTRUCTION, HOTELS, RESTAURANTS, RESORTS AND MUCH MORE. THANKS. KEEP IT UP. -- ROY |

Republican Frat Brothers Reignite Dems' "War on Women" Theme
Posted: 14 Mar 2012 03:12 PM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
Just when it seemed that the Democrats' "War On Women" theme had petered out, a group of college Republicans at Duke poured gasoline on the flames by posing for an outrageous photograph with a cardboard cutout of Hillary Clinton. One of the Republicans pretended to kiss the cutout while holding a beer to "Hillary's" mouth while another, in an even more offensive gesture, cupped the cutout's right breast. Republican leaders quickly sought to distance themselves from this latest bombshell, while Democrats saw the photo as more evidence that sexism is deeply entrenched in the Republican Party.
"This confirms what we've always suspected," said Nancy Pelosi. "Republicans are sexist to the core. Where do you think these Republican frat brothers got their misogynistic ideas? From the leaders of their party, that's where!"
Harry Reid was equally vehement: "These young Republicans are obviously part of Rush Limbaugh's radio audience. They may be the ones with their hands on Hillary's cleavage, but Limbaugh put the idea into their heads!"
Barack Obama agreed, saying...
No, wait. Sorry. Those aren't Republican frat brothers, they are Obama staffers. The one with his hand on Hillary's breast is Jon Favreau, Barack Obama's head speechwriter, who currently earns $172,000 a year as your employee. The photo appeared on Facebook shortly after the 2008 election and Favreau sent an apology to Mrs. Clinton, who by then was slated to be Secretary of State. She apparently found the photo amusing and, according to Wikipedia, responded: "Senator Clinton is pleased to learn of Jon's obvious interest in the State Department, and is currently reviewing his application." Time magazine has named Favreau one of the 100 most influential people in the world; he has also been honored as one of the World's Most Beautiful People by People magazine.
Wow, this women business is tricky. You don't want to jump to any conclusions about whether you are witnessing a war or just good, clean fun until you check out the party registration.

The Associated Press Provides Context For A Suicide
Posted: 14 Mar 2012 01:32 PM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
The Associated Press reports on a terrible story from Morocco:
The case of a 16-year-old girl who killed herself after she was forced to marry her rapist has spurred outrage among Morocco's internet activists and calls for changes to the country's laws. ...
Amina Filali...swallowed rat poison on Saturday to protest her marriage to the man who raped her a year earlier.
Article 475 of the Moroccan penal code allows for the "kidnapper" of a minor to marry his victim to escape prosecution, and it has been used to justify a traditional practice of making a rapist marry his victim to preserve the honor of the woman's family. ...
"It is unfortunately a recurring phenomenon," [Fouzia Assouli, president of Democratic League for Women's Rights] said."We have been asking for years for the cancellation of Article 475 of the penal code which allows the rapist to escape justice."
It is, as I said, a terrible story, and one that certainly reflects poorly on Morocco's law and culture. But the Associated Press doesn't want its readers to draw any adverse inferences about Morocco or, Allah forbid, Islam. So it inserted this gratuitous observation into its news story:
In many parts of the Middle East, there is a tradition whereby a rapist can escape prosecution if he marries his victim, thereby restoring her honor. There is a similar injunction in the Old Testament's Book of Deuteronomy.
So all religions, evidently, are equally barbaric. Of course, we haven't exactly witnessed an epidemic of sixteen year old girls consuming rat poison because they were forced to marry rapists in the U.S., Israel, or any other predominantly Christian or Jewish country; nor is there such a country where forced marriage is a defense to a criminal rape charge.
Moreover, the AP's categorical assertion about Deuteronomy was questionable at best. It referred to Deuteronomy 22:28, which some have maligned as condoning rape. This site has a scholarly analysis of why that interpretation is incorrect.
Be that as it may, the AP's instinctive desire to drag the Old Testament into its story by way of extenuation is highly revealing.

Battle of the Books
Posted: 14 Mar 2012 10:50 AM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
A follower on Twitter posed the following question to me and Jonah Goldberg in a Twitter post over the weekend: "Is there any rough contemporary corollary to the Lionel Trilling-Russell Kirk, lib.-con. intellectual battle?" What Chad M (Chad 1320 if you're Twitterversical) is referring to is the fact that Russell Kirk's magisterial book, The Conservative Mind, was written largely in response to Trilling's assertion in The Liberal Imagination that "In the United States at this time, liberalism is not only the dominant but even the sole intellectual tradition. For it is a plain fact that nowadays there are no conservative or reactionary ideas in general circulation." Conservative or reactionary impulses, Trilling added, do not "express themselves in ideas but only in action or in irritable mental gestures which seek to resemble ideas." Kirk's book was an impressive rebuttal to Trilling's too casual dismissal. It is also worth noting that Trilling's Liberal Imagination can today be considered something of a conservative book; I am sure it is read and valued more by conservatives than liberals today-another sign of how far to the left modern "liberals" have traversed.
John Rawls
Anyway, two important, albeit narrower, intellectual clashes of the first order come to mind that are as serious as the Trilling-Kirk contrast. The first would be John Rawls, author of A Theory of Justice (unquestionably the ur-text of modern liberal thought), and Robert Nozick, who answered Rawls impressively in Anarchy, State, Utopia. Nozick's reply is very high-toned libertarianism, and as such might be considered too narrow or limited in scope. There have been other impressive short critiques of Rawls from conservative thinkers: Allan Bloom wrote at least one sweeping critique that I know of, and Brian Anderson in the Spring 2003 edition of The Public Interest (an issue notable for its splendid article on "Sensible Environmentalism" from . . . guess who?).
The other extraordinary and direct intellectual clash that comes to mind is one carried out between two thinkers inside the covers of a single book: it is the argument between Leo Strauss and the Russian-born French Hegelian Alexandre Kojeve, in the book entitled On Tyranny. On the surface (isn't that where Straussians start every exegesis?), it presents itself merely as an interpretive argument over Xenophon's dialogue Hiero or Tyrannicus, but it becomes before long a fundamental argument over the nature of political wisdom and political power. Kojeve openly argued for what modern liberals won't admit-or are so confused over that they don't know the implications of their premises-namely, that the twin object of philosophy and politics is the creation of the "universal and homogeneous state" (think a global EU bureaucracy as a model) in which tyrannical rule is a perfectly acceptable, and probably preferable, mode of governance.
Alexandre Kojeve
It is an abstruse and dense argument, which is why it isn't on the radar screen of most sensible people, but that should not detract from the spectacle of two thinkers of diametrically opposed views conducting a serious disputation about fundamental alternatives without resorting to name-calling or categorical denunciation. As such, the Strauss-Kojeve argument wouldn't play well on a cable news show. (Heck, it wouldn't even play on C-SPAN BookTV.) The last edition of the book includes the long correspondence between Strauss and Kojeve that shows how they carried on a dialogue for many years.
I say Strauss wins the argument, of course. Here's Strauss's last word in On Tyranny:
From the Universal Tyrant, however, there is no escape. Thanks to the conquest of nature and to the completely unabashed substitution of suspicion and terror for law, the Universal and Final Tyrant has at his disposal practically unlimited means for ferretting out, and for extinguishing, the most modest efforts in the direction of thought. Kojeve would seem to be right although for the wrong reason: the coming of the universal and homogeneous state will be the end of philosophy on earth.

If You Are A Republican, No Need to Panic
Posted: 14 Mar 2012 09:09 AM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
The news this morning is all about Rick Santorum winning the primaries in Mississippi and Alabama, but who won the most delegates yesterday? Mitt Romney did. He added six delegates to his lead, which now stands as follows:
Romney: 495 Santorum: 252 Gingrich: 131 Paul: 48
So Romney has won well over half the delegates selected so far. Many observers have lost sight of the fact that the Republican Party changed its rules this year, in order to ensure that the nomination process would take some time rather than end prematurely, as the party thought happened in 2008. We wrote about the rules change here. The relevant rule now states:
Any presidential primary, caucus, convention, or other meeting held for the purpose of selecting delegates to the national convention which occurs prior to the first day of April in the year in which the national convention is held, shall provide for the allocation of delegates on a proportional basis.
Given that the primaries and caucuses to date have allotted delegates on one form of proportional representation or another, and given that the party started with a large field, the fact that Romney has won well over half of the delegates selected so far is quite an impressive accomplishment. His showing in yesterday's primaries was also good, considering that, as Romney put it, these deep South primaries were "away games" for him.
As of April 1, Republican primaries can be winner-take-all. To name just three, New York (95 delegates), California (172 delegates) and New Jersey (50 delegates) are in that category. Does anyone seriously think that Rick Santorum can win those contests? I don't. Today's Rasmussen Reports, for example, shows Romney with a 20-point lead over Santorum in California.
So it appears to me that Romney is moving steadily toward the nomination. He isn't winning in a landslide, but so what? Today the Associated Press wrote:
Mitt Romney's losses in Alabama and Mississippi underscore a stark reality: The core of his party does not want him.
But who says Republicans in Mississippi and Alabama are the core of the Republican party, any more than voters elsewhere? Romney has gotten many more votes than Santorum in the contests so far, so why doesn't it make more sense to say that the core of the party doesn't want Santorum?
The contest between Romney and Santorum is generally postured as one between an economic conservative and a social conservative. That is fair enough. But economic and social conservatism are not contradictory philosophies; on the contrary, in some respects they are opposite sides of the same coin, and both are traditional legs of the conservative stool. Romney's emphasis on economic issues is the winning formula in an election cycle when the economy is far and away the main concern of voters, and the country is drowning in debt. But Santorum's strong showing is a reminder that the social issues will be a plus for Republicans in November, too, despite the Democrats' hysterical attempts to miscast them in a way that hurts Republicans.
Newt Gingrich, meanwhile, says that he is staying in the race to prevent Mitt from getting the 1,144 delegates he needs to secure the nomination. That makes Gingrich the Mephistopheles of this year's election cycle: he wills evil, but does good. By staying in the race, he splits the non-Romney vote and should ensure Romney's victory in some or all of the winner-take-all primaries.
UPDATE: One more thing: Yesterday the Obama campaign sent out an email to the president's supporters that said, in part:
Tonight, some combination of Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum will give victory speeches after the next round of Republican primaries.
All you really need to know: According to a new poll, if the general election were held today, we would lose to Mitt Romney. ...
If you can't imagine a scenario in which Mitt Romney defeats Barack Obama, just look at the numbers. It's a real possibility, and we have to start acting like it.
It was, of course, a fundraising appeal. But the point was nevertheless correct. Mitt Romney can, and I think will, defeat Barack Obama. It is highly doubtful whether Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich or Ron Paul has much chance of doing the same.

A Romney-Santorum Ticket?
Posted: 14 Mar 2012 05:46 AM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
I hope not, because I think Santorum would be a drag on Romney, but last night's results make this a more likely outcome-unless you like this morning's flyer that Santorum could combine with Gingrich to put a Santorum-Gingrich ticket over the top before the Tampa convention. Even a Jeb Bush-Sarah Palin ticket (which I like on the merits, but seriously . . .) would do better than Santorum-Gingrich. But this kind of intrigue is exactly why Gingrich is going to stick around, and that probably helps Romney oddly enough. Maybe a Romney-Gingrich ticket? This whole nomination fight is starting to seem like a bad LSD flashback. (Memo to housekeeper: please keep me away from sharp knifes and my gun case.)
In a contest between "Metro Mitt" and "Rural Rick," as Henry Olsen calls them, yesterday's result was always plausible. Romney runs well in metropolitan areas, but very poorly in rural areas. Romney's strength in metropolitan areas could be a major asset in November in swing suburbs where Republicans have done quite poorly ever since Bill Clinton stole them away in 1992, but overall the GOP nominee needs to roll up big margins in rural areas to overcome Democratic strength in urban areas. Santorum on paper would appear to provide that help, but not as well as several other potential running mates.
Romney still has to be reckoned the favorite in the delegate count for the usual reasons of superior organization, etc. But he may not be able to get over the line before the convention. Memo to Mitch Daniels: Please don't plan on vacation in late August.
Meanwhile, Romney has flip-flopped again. On catfish. Seriously. Not kidding.
