NAPOLITANO: Can the president kill you?
Elimination of al-Awlaki was more Stalinesque than Jeffersonian
The Washington Times | By Andrew P. Napolitano | Thursday, March 8, 2012
Can the president kill an American simply because that person is dangerous and his arrest would be impractical? Can the president be judge, jury and executioner of an American in a foreign country because he thinks that would keep America safe? Can Congress authorize the president to do that?
Earlier this week, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. attempted to justify presidential killing in a speech at Northwestern University law school. In it, he recognized the requirement of the Fifth Amendment for due process. He argued that the president may substitute the traditionally understood due process - a public jury trial - with the president's own novel version of it; that would be a secret deliberation about killing.

A World of Refugees
The old paradigm that a country has the right to decide who enters it has been decisively overturned in Europe, it's under siege in such first world countries as America, Canada, Australia and Israel by the creed that says it's the human rights obligation of every nation to accept every refugee. Given a chance a sizable portion of the third world would move to the first, a minority because of oppression and a majority because the opportunities and freebies are much better there. Even low ranked first world nations still find themselves swamped with refugees looking to move in. International law does not assign any priority to a nation's citizens over any person who happens to stray across the border. At the ground level that means the end of borders and the end of citizenship which is why immigration isn't just a touchy issue in Arizona, it's a touchy issue in Sydney, Tel Aviv and Birmingham. You can hardly open a newspaper of the liberal persuasion without being treated to another group of refugees in some troubled part of the world walled up behind fences and trying to get over to London, Sydney or New York. This sort of thing can't be called immigration anymore, it's a straightforward migration and it has no apparent limits. However many you take in, there will be more waiting and always burdening you with an unsolvable crisis. One approach is to try and stabilize whatever crisis they are supposedly escaping from. Too many Libyans running away to Italy? Just bomb their dictator and they'll go home again. At least that's the theory, it doesn't work too well in practice. For one thing Libya is more dangerous and unstable than it was under Gaddafi. Stabilizing it would require an Iraq level investment of money and manpower, and Iraq isn't stable either. And London is still full of Iraqi refugees dating back to the 1980's. The disparities that make migration aren't fixable, but nor is mass migration a viable option. There's a reason that the refugees are running away and they are often part of the problem. Every nation is troubled in its own way and mass migration imports those troubles. It's why beheadings have come north of the border and the Jihad has set up shop in countless Western cities. The melting pot myth was that people leave their identities behind to join in a mass identity. That worked only marginally back in the day, it doesn't work at all today when the refugees are immersed in their Little Mogadishus, which have popped up in a frightening amount of American cities foretelling the day when those cities will become as violent and broken as the original Mogadishu.

Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution
Available to you, your family, your friends, and all Americans.
Weeks One & Two Now Available - Sign Up TODAY!
 | Dr. Larry P. Arnn |
Over the years, many friends of Hillsdale, those who never attended college here, have said to me: "Dr. Arnn, I wish I could take Hillsdale's Constitution course!"
In response to these requests, this past year, for the first time ever, Hillsdale College offered the "Introduction to the Constitution" lecture series at no charge. Frankly, I wasn't sure what sort of a response a course like this would have.
That's why I was excited to see that YOU and almost 200,000 other people from all over the United States registered for "Introduction to the Constitution."
Thank you very much for registering and participating. I hope you learned a lot from the series.
I was thrilled, not only by the response, but at what it indicates: Americans are willing and eager learn about the Constitution and to defend the principles of liberty that made America so prosperous!
And this re-awakening of national interest in the Constitution comes not a minute too soon.
Now, for the first time ever, Hillsdale College is offering a no-cost 10-week online Constitution course based on the class Hillsdale College students must complete for graduation:
"Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution"
This course on the U.S. Constitution is available online at no charge to anyone who wants to understand and defend the timeless principles of liberty upon which our nation was founded!
I am proud to be teaching part of our NEW "Constitution 101" course and hope YOU will be one of my students again!
"Constitution 101" begins on February 20, 2012, and concludes the week of April 30. It will cover such topics as the Declaration of Independence and its connection to the Constitution, how the Constitution is structured to protect individual liberty and ensure good government, the crisis of constitutional government faced by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, and modern challenges to the Constitution during the "Progressive" era.
It is my honor to teach the first class, "The American Mind," and the final class, "The Recovery of the Constitution." All of the classes will be taught by Hillsdale College professors - the top teachers in their field and the same ones who instruct our students here on Hillsdale's campus.

The U.S. Constitution
A Reader
Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.
Editorial Note: Just received a couple of copies of the reader. Not just a short course pamphlet this; with the heft of 'Atlas Shrugged', it is well worth getting whether or not you choose to take the course.
About Hillsdale College
Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."
Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs. Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012. |

The bad news is last month some well intentioned political activist announced a cut-off date for signing up co-sponsors for Rep. Rose Marie Swanger's American Law's for American Courts (HB 2029) in an effort to inject some urgency into the effort.
What it resulted in was an interruption of the campaign to encourage those Representatives not yet signed on as co-sponsors to join with those Legislators who have already recognized the death by smothering threat to our Constitution.
The good news is there is no cut-off date for adding co-sponsors and we are once again asking your readers to contact their representatives and ask they join the battle.
There are only three Representatives from Bucks who are co-sponsors, Representatives Clymer, Petri and Quinn and we thank them for showing their colors.
But that leaves seven more Representatives who appear to be still standing on the sidelines as the battle for our existence as a free people is joined.
Lame rhetoric? I'm afraid not. If you do not understand the threat we face from 'peaceful' opportunists like CAIR, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bucksafa11info/messages or contact me at bucksafa11@yahoo.com to schedule an Open the Koran presentation for you and your friends.
If you're ready to help, visit www.actforamerica.org and sign on as a chapter leader. It's free and the people there are friendly and helpful. Your help is needed. Every township, every neighborhood needs an Act! for America chapter leader.
But before you do anything, if your Pennsylvania Representative has not yet ssigned on as co-sponsor, urge her/him to do so and ask what is it that prevents him/her from doing so.
Help Pennsylvania be counted among those States that have shown the courage to face off with the enemies who have plainly stated their aim is to destroy our Nation. Our laws have worked just fine since colonial times. What is needed are politicians who respect them. And you know whose job it is to remind them of that.
Thanks,
John Ryan

CAIR's Fight Against Pennsylvania Foreign Law Bill
by David J. Rusin FrontPage Magazine February 13, 2012
http://www.islamist-watch.org/9192/cair-fight-against-pennsylvania-foreign-law-bill
Resistance to a new bill aimed at limiting foreign law in Pennsylvania courts serves as a case study of how Islamists and their allies operate: peddling falsehoods about Shari'a, painting Muslims as victims, and denying that anyone seeks to institutionalize aspects of Islamic law - even as they vigorously promote that very agenda. With similar legislation being debated across the U.S., understanding their tactics is critical.
At issue in Pennsylvania is House Bill (HB) 2029, which stipulates that "a tribunal shall not consider a foreign legal code or system which does not grant ... the same fundamental liberties, rights and privileges" as guaranteed by the federal and state constitutions. Introduced in November, it follows the American Laws for American Courts (ALAC) model and makes no mention of Shari'a. A preliminary memo sent to legislators last June in the name of Rep. RoseMarie Swanger, HB 2029's chief sponsor, does highlight Islamic law, but she later said that it had been circulated accidentally. Regardless, concerns about Shari'a are warranted due to its many provisions that conflict with the standards of American jurisprudence. For example, it disadvantages women in terms of inheritance, divorce, child custody, and other areas of family law. Shari'a already has shaped numerous cases nationwide, including in Pennsylvania, where one state court decided how assets should be distributed according to Islam.
Pushback against HB 2029 has been led by the Philadelphia office of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-PA) and was punctuated by an interfaith press conference (video here) at CAIR-PA headquarters on December 14. The overall campaign reflects CAIR's usual recipe of distortion, victimology, and contradiction between words and deeds.
Attacks on bills like HB 2029 begin by sowing confusion about Shari'a. Because Islamic law encompasses virtually every facet of life - governing personal activities such as eating and worship, but also forming an oppressive social and legal structure - suit-and-tie Islamists work to emphasize its unthreatening pieces whenever possible. CAIR-PA executive director Moein Khawaja's suggestion that Shari'a should worry Pennsylvanians no more than halal gyros is a fine example of this technique.

March 23rd, 2012, marks an important and unfortunate anniversary. It will have been exactly two years since President Obama forced his unpopular health care takeover onto the American people. Americans for Prosperity has educated the public about the dangers of government interference in the health care market for the past several years, and now the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments and make a ruling on that very issue. As you are most likely aware, the U.S. Supreme Court will be considering the constitutionality of several elements of the President's health care bill. This may be our best chance to overturn this offense against our health care freedoms. That's why Americans for Prosperity will be hosting a Hands Off My Health Care rally for free-market grassroots activists from across the country at the Supreme Court on March 27th. Details can be found below.

Voters today - perhaps more than at any time in recent history - are yearning for principled candidates committed to standing strong for the timeless values upon which our country was founded and standing stronger against the politics-as-usual establishment working to undermine those values.

To Everyone Who Helped with Verify the Recall - Thank You!

Here's What You Accomplished IN 22 DAYS:
- 14,000+ volunteers joined in from 49 states
- 3.5 MILLION records were entered
- 192.2 GB total bandwidth
- 23,529,926 total requests
- 481,002 were attempted threats to the site
We proved that the unions had nowhere near the 1,000,000 signatures they touted - and that of the actual signatures turned in, at least 25% and possibly up to 40%, had critical errors.
Did the unions legitimately compile the 520,000 signatures necessary to trigger a recall election? We'll let the public decide.
Our goal was neither to support or negate the outcome - our goal was to uphold the integrity of the process.
Reports will be posted online on Monday, February 27th. You can check them out here.

John Stossel - May 2, 2012
The Union League of Philadelphia
Luncheon: 12:00 - 1:30PM

After years of obeying our parents, we are programmed to think that anytime there is a problem, whether it's companies going bankrupt or schools keeping kids stupid, government action is the way to solve it. Using his decades of reporting, Stossel tackles how those intuitive, knee-jerk reactions lead us astray.
Central planning sounds right. It feels good. But it has nothing to do with the realities of economics and science. There is nothing that government can do that we cannot do better as free individuals - and as groups of individuals, working together voluntarily, not at the point of a gun or under threat of a fine. Without big government, our possibilities are limitless.

The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:
- Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
- Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
- Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care
The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

Deception, betrayal, and dishonesty. These are not appealing traits in elected officials, but sadly, they aptly describe many Republican lawmakers across the country feverishly working to implement ObamaCare. Would you believe that Governor Tom Corbett is among those Republicans diligently complying with ObamaCare? Despite the fact that Pennsylvania is party to the lawsuit being heard before the Supreme Court, Tom Corbett is implementing the law in our state. ObamaCare requires that each state set up what is known as a Health Insurance Exchange. In theory, these exchanges will be one-stop online shops where individuals will pool together to purchase insurance. Without a state-created exchange, the individual mandate cannot be enforced. As in all bureaucracies, there are some major downfalls, not the least of which is the anticipated spike in the cost of insurance. Other significant issues include: - The federal government will dictate what insurers may participate
- The federal government will decide minimum coverage-potentially including such elective procedures as breast augmentation and face lifts
- The federal government will stipulate how the exchange is run
I could go on, but I'm certain you recognize the theme. The federal government will control every aspect of our health care. Yet, Governor Corbett claims that establishing CorbettCare will protect Pennsylvania citizens from undue federal regulation. The opposite is actually true. Creation of the CorbettCare Exchange does great harm and forces onerous federal regulations on our state. Governor Corbett is readily ceding state Sovereignty to the central government, and relinquishing all authority on health care matters. Our state has already requested and accepted over $33 million to set up the exchange! Merely accepting and spending federal funds requires absolute obedience to federal government regulations, and the loss of state sovereignty. A key responsibility of state officials is to protect our sovereignty, yet our legislators may be considering legislation to assist in the establishment of CorbettCare. And like obedient little children, these turncoats expect you to forget their empty promises, ignore their campaign rhetoric, and blame the Federal Government for all of the many losses you will suffer as a result. Click here to sign the petition demanding that the over $33 million in grant funds be returned and all contingency plans to submit to ObamaCare be abandoned immediately! If you'd like to tell Governor Corbett how you feel about this scheme, you can reach him at 717-787-2500. There are over 1 billion reasons why some states are establishing these exchanges-and each reason has a dollar sign attached. With over $1 billion at stake, and more than $700 million already sent to complicit states, it's easy to understand why greedy politicians have their hands out before the court can rule. These funds are being used all over the country to enrich political allies and the well-connected. Millions of your taxpayer dollars are being wasted, and you are footing the bill while they steal your freedoms. Those hundreds of millions will never be returned to our treasury-unless you and I do something to force the issue now. Tell your legislators that even if the Supreme Court fails to overturn ObamaCare, you expect them to protect your rights and jealously guard our state sovereignty by refusing to establish a state exchange. For Liberty, Deb Wells Interim State Coordinator Alabama Campaign for Liberty P.S. After you sign the petition demanding our state return all ObamaCare Exchange grant funds, please pass this message along to your contacts!

Mike Brownfield | March 9, 2012
In the Super Tuesday primary, the economy was the number one issue on voters' minds, be they in Massachusetts, Georgia, Ohio, or Virginia. And that wasn't because they were happy about high unemployment and slow wage growth. Yet according to President Barack Obama, "the economy is getting stronger, and the recovery is speeding up." Of course, these things are relative. A disappointing recovery is underway. It just hasn't touched the millions of Americans who remain out of work, the millions more whose wages can't keep up with inflation, and it doesn't offset the effects of high gas prices on family budgets.
Voters' old-fashioned common sense about the economy was backed up by the numbers in the February jobs report just released this morning. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. economy added 227,000 jobs last month. That's the good news, and it does evidence that the recovery continues, albeit slowly. And this slow-trot recovery is why the unemployment rate remains at 8.3 percent, while the number of long-term unemployed workers remained at 5.4 million, accounting for 42.6 percent of the unemployed.

RedState Morning Briefing
For March 12, 2012
1. Obama, Energy Promises, and Empty Rhetoric Voters in the November election will be acutely aware of two key economic variables above all others: the national unemployment rate, and the price they pay for a gallon of gasoline. President Obama senses his vulnerability on gasoline prices, and is busy erecting a defense against charges that his actions (or inactions) have contributed to high prices.
2. The Obama Administration's Assault on Religious Freedom
Has the Obama Administration declared war upon religious freedom in the United States?
This is not as extreme a question as it appears at first blush.
What initially appeared to be a series of unrelated act is now taking on the color of a conscious strategy to eliminate the ability of religious groups to control any aspect of their lives outside the barest of liturgical practices.
In interests of full disclosure and to avoid allegations of plagiarism, I need to take a short detour to explain the genesis of this story.
3. ShePAC Fights Back: First Casualties, Misogynist Maher and Opportunist Obama
"What about saying she's a wh*re?" - Jerry Brown and aide in reference to Meg Whitman
""You have to lift their skirts to find out if they are women. You sure can't find out by how they vote!" - State Rep. Janis Sontany (D-TN)
"She works the pole" (as in stripper pole) - Joe Scarborough about Jerri Thompson
"She performed [redacted sexual act] on all the talk show hosts in Milwaukee" - John Sylvester, WDTY about Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch
"She's a balloon head" - Chris Matthews, MSNBC in reference to Congresswoman Michele Bachmann
"Christian Stepford wife in a 'sexy librarian' costume" - "hardcore pornographic centerfold spread." - Salon, about Sarah Palin
"Distracted by the lure of celebrity' and "the gubernatorial equivalent of the Real Housewives of New Jersey." - Democrat Chair Dick Harpootlian in reference to Governor Nikki Haley
The above quotes are just the very tip (and cleanest for a family site) of the iceberg of what Conservative women face in the political arena. Michelle Malkin did a great job highlighting some of the worst in her column this week 'The War on Conservative Women". Conservative women seeking political office are heretics, you see. How dare they stray off the Lefty plantation? For that, they must pay. And be punished.
4. Sometimes I wonder if we should just abolish the FCC
I know, I know. The way that broadcasts travel across state lines, it's important that some sort of national control step in, because the states can't do it. But the way the Obama FCC operates, sometimes I wonder if it's worth all the trouble.
Instead of working to ensure we have the spectrum we need allocated to the purposes we want, The Obama FCC constantly works as a roadblock, earlier against AT&T, and now against Verizon.
This same FCC is also, with apparently no objection from the President, actively and openly stonewalling Chuck Grassley and the Senate in attempts at applying reasonable oversight to the committee.
5. Take Out Bonner and Bachus in Alabama
Last week, I bemoaned the fact that Alabama is one of the most conservative states, yet it sports a mediocre congressional delegation. Alabama has one of the earliest congressional primaries; they will overlap with the presidential primary this coming Tuesday. It turns out that several of the incumbents have primary challengers.
The one sane Republican in the state, Mo Brooks (CD-5) is being challenged by former Congressman and former Democrat Parker Griffith. Obviously, we must support Brooks over Griffith.

FBI director: Have to check whether targeted killing rule is outside US only
By Catherine Herridge
Published March 07, 2012
| FoxNews.com
FBI Director Robert Mueller on Wednesday said he would have to go back and check with the Department of Justice whether Attorney General Eric Holder's "three criteria" for the targeted killing of Americans also applied to Americans inside the U.S.
Pressed by House lawmakers about a recent speech in which Holder described the legal justification for assassination, Mueller, who was attending a hearing on his agency's budget, did not say without qualification that the three criteria could not be applied inside the U.S.
"I have to go back. Uh, I'm not certain whether that was addressed or not," Mueller said when asked by Rep. Tom Graves, R-Ga., about a distinction between domestic and foreign targeting.
Graves followed up asking whether "from a historical perspective," the federal government has "the ability to kill a U.S. citizen on United States soil or just overseas."
"I'm going to defer that to others in the Department of Justice," Mueller replied.
Indeed, Holder's Monday speech at Northwestern University seemed to leave the door open. While Holder speaks of Americans who lead al Qaeda overseas, the implications of the speech seem broad.

In the latest revelation of how the federal government is monitoring social media and online news outlets, the Electronic Privacy Information Center has posted online a 2011 Department of Homeland Security manual that includes hundreds of key words (such as those above) and search terms used to detect possible terrorism, unfolding natural disasters and public health threats. The center, a privacy watchdog group, filed a Freedom of Information Act request and then sued to obtain the release of the documents.

Israel and the Plight of Mideast Christians
Just as Jews were once expelled from Arab lands, Christians are now being forced from countries they have long inhabited.
By MICHAEL OREN
The church in Bethlehem had survived more than 1,000 years, through wars and conquests, but its future now seemed in jeopardy. Spray-painted all over its ancient stone walls were the Arabic letters for Hamas. The year was 1994 and the city was about to pass from Israeli to Palestinian control. I was meeting with the church's clergy as an Israeli government adviser on inter-religious affairs. They were despondent but too frightened to file a complaint. The same Hamas thugs who had desecrated their sanctuary were liable to take their lives.
The trauma of those priests is now commonplace among Middle Eastern Christians. Their share of the region's population has plunged from 20% a century ago to less than 5% today and falling. In Egypt, 200,000 Coptic Christians fled their homes last year after beatings and massacres by Muslim extremist mobs. Since 2003, 70 Iraqi churches have been burned and nearly a thousand Christians killed in Baghdad alone, causing more than half of this million-member community to flee. Conversion to Christianity is a capital offense in Iran, where last month Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani was sentenced to death. Saudi Arabia outlaws private Christian prayer.
As 800,000 Jews were once expelled from Arab countries, so are Christians being forced from lands they've inhabited for centuries. Read more:

Yesterday's release of the Barack Obama/Derrick Bell Harvard tape was seen by many as another example of the President's long history associating with radicals. There is another interpretation however. When Obama urged people to open up their hearts and minds to Bell it was another case of him "cozying" up to an Anti-Semite. Understand we are not talking about people who are Anti-Israel (although there is a huge crossover of the two) but people who regularly use Anti-Semitic stereotypes or more direct derogatory comments about Jews.

Palestinians fire mobile Grad launchers smuggled from Libya DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 10, 2012
After a short break Saturday morning from shooting more than 80 missiles against a dozen southern Israeli towns and villages Friday night and early Saturday, March 9-10, the Palestinian Jihad Islami resumed firing on Beersheba and the Eshkol region. They also released a video clip showing them firing Grad multiple rocket launchers mounted on vehicles on Israeli civilian targets. debkafile: This was solid evidence that the Iranian-backed Jihad had put into service weapons smuggled in from Libya five months ago, as debkafile was first to report November 11, 2011: Fifty Libyan Muslim Brotherhood mercenaries arrived in the Gaza Strip from Tripoli last month at the wheels of minivans on which were mounted the new Grad multiple rocket-launchers last seen on the Libyan battlefield in use against Muammar Qaddafi's army.

Friday Afternoon Roundup - Over the Cliff We Go
THE ELECTRIC DC CAR TEST It seems as if the Obama Administration will mainly be remembered for two things. Turning over the entire Middle East to the Muslim Brotherhood and badly mishandling the automotive industry. Controlling what cars people own and how they work is a basic means of social control. Trying to seize control of the industry was a golden opportunity for the nudgers to nudge us into our corner. But the post-bailout GM is acting like the pre-bailout GM, senselessly buying up pieces of foreign car companies that it doesn't actually need, but this time it's doing it in the name of the sustainable energy mantra. Corporate buying sprees are usually about two things, an incompetent CEO trying to outrace failure with a spurt of activity that convinces the shareholders that he might really be a visionary by picking up companies which are a bad fit (see AOL/Time Warner or AOL/Huffington Post) and they're about a company that can't move its product trying to monopolize the marketplace figuring that people will have to buy its products if it owns a piece of all the manufacturers. All it really does is pile up massive amounts of debt. This is the same model used by Obama in his expansion of the government, which just goes to show you that the critics who think he couldn't make it in the business world are wrong. He could run GM and he has run GM. And what's bad for GM is bad for America and what's bad for America is bad for GM. Meanwhile the subsidized electric car industry isn't running too well either. The Volt's problems are well known. This week the Karma had a well publicized Consumer Reports blowout. It joins a long list of stimulus funds recipient electric car companies and battery manufacturers that have failed. The Fisker Karma is an apt metaphor for the Obama Administration. It's hideously expensive, heavily hyped and doesn't work. The problem here isn't the technology. Given time, patience and investors, the technological problems can be licked. But a free market variation of Soviet central planning is going to produce only marginally better results. The stimulus was used to drive a command economy where the products that the government wanted to see made, got made. And that was doomed from the start. The government can get things done by throwing enough money and manpower at it. That is how we got to the moon. It will however do so inefficiently with huge cost overruns and major problems. The technology will not be mature, there will be serious unexpected problems and the process will be difficult to sustain over the long run. Product development is a process that requires the whole cycle of striving, testing, failure, reevaluation and eventual success that has been followed by every company trying to make a revolutionary product. Plunking a bunch of laptop batteries into a car, rolling out a snazzy marketing campaign and taking in stimulus money does not lead to a working electric car that everyone will want. It leads to publicized failure. We're not going to get an electric car by throwing a bunch of money at electric car companies. We're not going to get one by hiking the price of gasoline and then throwing in more tax breaks to electric car buyers. All this social and economic control does not create a working product. If we are going to have a popular and affordable electric car that works well, it is not going to come from stimulus funds. It will follow the old Ford path, it will be revolutionary because it has met the challenges of the marketplace. Not because it has a sugar daddy in D.C. Read more:

The Foundation
"There is but one straight course, and that is to seek truth and pursue it steadily." --George Washington
Government & Politics
Contraception Deception Is No Fluke
Democrats should be on the defensive over the ObamaCare contraception mandate but have instead made the entire issue a circus. They're employing their best smoke and mirrors to distract from the fundamental issue at stake -- whether Barack Obama has the constitutional authority to override religious liberty to achieve his desired insurance coverage -- but they won't get away with it.
As we noted last week, one Sandra Fluke testified before Congress on the need to have free birth control provided for all women at Georgetown University. Fluke is no typical college student, however. She's a 30-year-old self-professed "reproductive rights activist" who is pursuing her law degree, though she chose the Jesuit school for the express purpose of changing its policy on insuring contraception. Birth control is contrary to the religious doctrine of the Catholic Church, of which Jesuits are a part.
Simply put, Fluke wants them to abandon their principles in order to accommodate her and her fellow female students' recreational choices. The Left then cloaks this in the language of "rights" when no one on the Right is talking about taking rights away from anyone.
So how did Fluke gain a hearing before Congress? Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), head of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, called a hearing on the constitutionality of the Obama mandate. Democrats first wanted Americans United for Separation of Church and State executive director Barry Lynn to testify. Lynn is a typical anti-religious leftist, but at least he has some measure of "expertise" on the matter of Obama's interference with the church.
However, in a last-minute effort to misdirect the issue to "women's health," Democrats asked that Fluke appear. The committee had not vetted her, and Issa denied the request. Undeterred, Democrats held a subcommittee hearing, called their media accomplices for ample coverage, and allowed Fluke to testify about the plight of young women at Georgetown who supposedly can't afford their own birth control (despite its availability at the local pharmacy for $9 a month) and demand that the university buy it for them. She has no expertise on the subject of Obama's mandate, and her testimony was completely irrelevant hearsay.
Then, while discussing the topic last week, radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh called Fluke a "slut" and a "prostitute" and elaborated on what that meant in terms not fit for a family show. Clearly, he crossed the line with his language, and he issued two apologies -- apologies that also happened to serve to rehash his (quite valid) argument. Fluke dismissed those apologies, and we won't belabor the point; enough has been said on the subject and Limbaugh is perfectly capable of defending himself. (See, for example, here and here.)
Naturally, the Left went into overdrive to misdirect the issue again, this time to Limbaugh's comments instead of Obama's tyranny. They even hung Limbaugh's comments around the necks of Republicans -- as if they are responsible for him when no such similar standard ever exists for leftist talkingheads -- big mouths like Bill Maher, Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz and Keith Olbermann, whose own vulgar comments about women have heretofore been given a free pass. Predictably, Obama piled on with a politically opportunistic call to Fluke to "see if she was all right," and to further denounce Limbaugh and his fellow defenders of liberty.
It's critical to remember that the real issue is Obama's determination to deny religious liberty in the name of "women's health." Democrats realize that if the issue is framed properly, they lose. Their only hope is to distract and deceive by making the issue about women's access to birth control, or whether Rush is a misogynist or whatever other sideshow they can contrive.
Democrats claim that they want reproductive choices left between a woman and her doctor, but it is they who demand government control over health care in general, and, more specifically, authority to force employers and others to pay for certain "health" benefits regardless of the cost. Democrats claim that they love individual rights and liberties, but it is they who deny them for the sake of their pet causes. ObamaCare is designed to destroy liberty, and we mustn't let the Left's Big Top Circus distract from the mission to repeal it.
Share your thoughts on the mandate and the Fluke circus.
Campaign Trail: Super Tuesday
Super Tuesday saw 10 states go to the polls. Mitt Romney won Alaska, Idaho, Massachusetts, Ohio, Vermont and Virginia. Rick Santorum won North Dakota, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Newt Gingrich won his native Georgia. Ron Paul once again came up empty -- he has yet to win a single state. According to the Republican National Committee, the count of bound delegates is now Romney 339, Gingrich 107, Santorum 95, and Paul 22. To win, a candidate needs 1,144. Media reports have Santorum in second place based on projections of how unbound delegates will be allocated in the final count. Iowa, Colorado, Minnesota, Maine, North Dakota and Washington have yet to award their full number of delegates. With Tuesday now behind us, as Mark Alexander writes in The Politics of Self-Destruction, the GOP must unite behind a single candidate if it is to have any hope of beating Barack Obama in November -- which is the ultimate goal.
That said, frontrunner Mitt Romney is faced with an interesting conundrum. An exit poll conducted in his home state of Massachusetts asked voters what they thought of the Massachusetts health care law. Their response choices were About Right, Went Too Far, or Did Not Go Far Enough. Some 51 percent said it went too far, while just 37 percent said it was about right. Merely 6 percent said not far enough. Certainly those surveyed are Republicans, but they're still Bay State voters, and Romney has contested that his signature achievement remains popular there. Now with a refresher this week that he did advocate his plan at a federal level, it remains, perhaps more than ever, his Achilles heel in the GOP primary, so the opinions of Massachusetts voters are instructive. Too bad the question wasn't asked in other states.
Romney has repeatedly promised during the GOP debates that, if elected, he will repeal ObamaCare "on Day One." If he does manage to win the Republican nomination and defeat Obama in November, all freedom-loving Americans must ensure that this is a promise kept.
Hope 'n' Change: No Spreading the Wealth Around This Time
Barack Obama may be an advocate for spreading the wealth around, but that philosophy doesn't apply to his own campaign cash. The president's campaign recently rejected a $30 million request by Democrat leaders Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi for congressional campaign efforts. While that would be approximately what they received in 2008 and 2010, this year is a different story. Obama for America originally boasted that it would raise $1 billion this cycle, but fundraising thus far hasn't been auspicious, and campaign manager Jim Messina has worked to play down expectations.
The increased role of super PACs, which currently appear to favor Republicans, has also forced the Obama team to rethink their strategy. The cold shoulder extends beyond forking over some money to fellow Democrats, too. Neither Obama nor Joe Biden have committed to any fundraising events for congressional candidates thus far, demonstrating that Obama is out only for Obama in 2012. This change in direction fits the view Obama seems to hold about his own importance and the impediment Congress poses to his goal of reshaping the country.
New & Notable Legislation
The House passed the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act Thursday by a vote of 390-23. JOBS is a collection of a half-dozen other bills aimed at, among other things, easing the regulatory burden on small businesses and therefore removing some roadblocks to hiring. Though most Democrats voted for the bill, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called it a "jobs bill light" and said she wasn't touting its passage "because it's so meager." The White House, however, applauded the move, and it does reflect one of the few bipartisan achievements in recent history.
The Senate failed Thursday to pass a measure to bypass the Obama administration's Keystone XL pipeline denial. Even though 56 senators, including 11 Democrats, voted to override the administration, 60 votes were required to move the measure forward. The president contends that he really didn't reject the pipeline, he just couldn't abide by Republican timing, but he lobbied Senate Democrats to block passage.
From the Left: Fun on Your Dime
The Obama family has certainly enjoyed more than its "fair share" of prime vacation time. A scorecard assembled by Mr. Conservative tallies up the destinations and their cost. The First Lady's shopping trip to Europe in 2010, for example, cost upwards of $250,000 to cover the 68-member security detail, assistants and the trip on Air Force Two. The annual Hawaii Christmas vacation is a multi-million-dollar affair because Michelle and the girls always fly separately, and the stay lasts two to three weeks. In 2011, the hotel tab for staff alone was $134,000.
Rent for the "Winter White House" was $38,000. The family's 2011 Martha's Vineyard vacation was at an estate that rents for $50,000 per week. They see no reason to stop the fun now. Michelle took the girls to a luxury ski resort in Aspen on Washington's Birthday weekend, the 16th vacation taken since Obama's election. Citizens around the country are tightening their belts and planning much more modest vacations -- if they are planning any at all. If the Obamas feel America's pain, their "compassion" doesn't include your vacations.
Economy
February Sees Job Growth
The news on the employment front appears to be good -- 227,000 jobs added in February, with a level unemployment rate of 8.3 percent. If we go by the so-called U-6 unemployment number, which includes the underemployed and those who have simply dropped out of the job market, the rate is 14.9 percent, which is still down a full percentage point from February 2011. At this rate, it would take more than three years to get back to pre-recession employment. In fact, Obama has presided over the longest jobs recession -- 49 months -- since the Great Depression.
The Heritage Foundation explains the slow growth: "[A]n extraordinarily high number of Americans have dropped out of the work force, either choosing not to work, losing heart and abandoning the hunt for jobs, or accepting disability benefits. Because of the meager recovery, very few potential workers have returned to the job market to find work. With fewer people in the work force, the unemployment rate appears lower than it should as a matter of simple arithmetic. But this artificially low rate does not disguise the fact that talented, experienced, discouraged workers are choosing to sit on the sidelines instead of participating in the economy. In short, though the labor market is improving, it's nowhere near where it should be given America's potential."
As for the media's reporting, Reuters actually cuts to the chase: "It marked the first time since early 2011 that payrolls have grown by more than 200,000 for three months in a row -- bolstering President Barack Obama's chances for re-election."
Hot Air on Energy
A president seeking re-election ordinarily wants to avoid high gas prices during his run, but Barack Obama seems to believe that the steadily climbing price at the pump actually fits into his re-election strategy. He blames the oil companies at every opportunity, railing against what leftists have always claimed to be excessive profits and demanding an end to tax breaks. Of course, raising taxes on energy companies won't lower the price of gas. Yet higher gas prices are just what Obama and Energy Secretary Steven Chu actually want. As the secretary said in 2008, "Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe." Now that it's an election year, he claimed this week that the administration is doing "what we can to lower the price of gasoline." We believe his 2008 comment.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and some other Democrats offered another "solution" -- tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Pelosi suggested that every time the reserve has been tapped, gas prices have gone down. Yes, but by just a few pennies and only temporarily. She told reporters, "But even if you don't subscribe to that, that at least puts a question mark to the speculators that you might do this." Apparently, Pelosi is suggesting a head fake around the public and investors. The government is so inept at developing energy policy that elected officials are reduced to lying about doing something in order to try to achieve a result.
As for those subsidies (i.e., tax credits) for "Big Oil," we're all for closing loopholes to lower rates, but that's not what Obama means. In fact, he wants to redistribute those loopholes to alternative energy, which is already subsidized at a far higher rate than fossil fuels. When accounting for what little energy is actually provided by alternative sources, the subsidies are even more lopsided -- but let's not let facts get in the way of a good campaign narrative.
Chevy Volt: Cars Catch Fire, but Sales Haven't
We learned last week that Barack Obama wants to buy a Chevy Volt in five years. Yet those who make their living building the dud of a car received a little unexpected R&R time as GM announced earlier this week the temporary furlough of workers at the Hamtramck, Michigan, plant where the sleek beauties are built. Some 1,300 employees are laid off until April 23 as the carmaker tries to clear an inventory backlog.
While GM says Volt sales were brisker in February than in the previous month, leftists blame slow sales on the "relentless attacks" by conservative media and GOP politicians. GM lamented that "we didn't design the Volt to be a political punching bag." We'd call it a lightning rod for criticism, but either way the market speaks for itself. With just 1,626 Volts sold so far this year, GM's goal of 60,000 Volts sold worldwide in 2012 is looking like a pipe dream. Even a new $10,000 tax credit -- up from $7,500 -- promoted by Obama still isn't enough.
Ironically, just when Detroit halted production, seemingly good news charged from Europe where the Volt's sister car, the Opel Ampera, was named 2012 European Car of the Year. Then again, Motor Trend named it the 2011 Car of the Year, which didn't exactly translate into sales. Perhaps the European market, where both gasoline and electricity are far more expensive than here, is a better fit for the GM product. Sluggish sales on this side of the pond make the Volt more of an expensive curiosity than a, er, hot commodity.
The BIG Lie
"Now, because of these new standards for cars and trucks, they're all going to be able to go further and use less fuel every year. And that means pretty soon you'll be able to fill up your car every two weeks instead of every week. Over time, that saves you, a typical family, about $8,000 a year." --Barack Obama
In reality, it saves at best a few hundred dollars a year. Not too shabby, but not eight grand, either. It also doesn't account for higher insurance premiums, worse safety risks or higher-priced technology.
Income Redistribution: Bailing Out the Bubble Makers
The administration's original bailout for underwater mortgages fell woefully short of the three to four million homeowners it was predicted to help. Undeterred, Barack Obama's Homeowners Assistance Modification Program begins later this spring, accepting those who own multiple homes. Buyers of multiple homes were caught in the housing bust that occurred after the market's 2006 peak, when one-third of all mortgages were lent to consumers who already had primary residences.
Those who own up to four residences and either rent out or have plans to do so are eligible for the modification, which comes in several forms: cutting the interest rate, stretching out the repayment period, forgiving principal, or some combination of those. Some 700,000 landlords become eligible for assistance once the changes are made.
Critics accuse the Obama administration of rescuing those market speculators who lost while flipping houses at a dizzying pace. One real estate consultant called the scheme "ridiculous" and asked, "Are you going to refund people who lost money on the stock market too?" Yet when banks were coerced into helping the Obama cause, they signed the dotted line for a lot of radical change. Welcome to an America where profits are privatized (after the government gets its cut, of course) while risk is socialized.
Lottery Winner on Food Stamps
Speaking of undeserving recipients of redistributed income, word came out this week that a Michigan lottery winner received food stamps. Apparently, $1 million wasn't enough to buy groceries, so the winner kept right on taking the welfare. She thought the state would cut her off, but it didn't, which she thought was fine since she isn't working, has "no income," and has "bills to pay." Fortunately, once the story broke, her benefits were cut off.
Do you have some words of wisdom for this lottery winner?
Security
Theater of the Absurd: Obama and Israel
In light of Barack Obama's meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week to discuss, among other things, the situation in Iran and Israel's possible (imminent?) attack, it's worth revisiting history. "I try not to pat myself too much on the back," Obama boasted in October 2011, "but this administration has done more in terms of the security of the state of Israel than any previous administration." Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan might beg to differ. One helped save Israel in wartime and the other regarded as perhaps the most pro-Israel president ever. Obama's claim is also belied by his call for a return to the pre-1967 borders between Israel, Egypt, Jordan and Syria, something the Israelis rightly reject as akin to disarmament. Obama's frequent demands regarding Israel's obligations in the Israel-Palestinian dispute, sometimes approaching the level of ultimatums, further refute his claims about his positive role in U.S.-Israeli relations.
The greatest fault of the Obama administration, from Israel's perspective, is its approach to Iran. Pretending that UN sanctions can dissuade Iran from developing nuclear weapons, Obama repeatedly argues against Israeli military action. The Israelis are thus discouraged by Obama's newest election-year claim that he's "got Israel's back." (Can you imagine Ronald Reagan demeaning the office of the president by uttering such juvenile banalities?) In reality, "having Israel's back" means not lecturing it about its own security in the face of an existential threat from Iran. Perhaps granting Israel's request for bunker-buster bombs would be a start.
For Israel's part, Netanyahu explained, "The U.S. is big and distant; Israel is smaller and closer to Iran ... so the American clock regarding preventing the nuclearization of Iran is not the Israeli one." Israel must act to preserve itself as it sees fit, and its deadline for military action has become tighter and tighter during the last three years. The United States doesn't want war with Iran, which an Israeli strike would almost certainly ignite; but neither should we back away from it if it is necessary to prevent this rogue state and terrorist benefactor from going nuclear.
Panetta Says White House Doesn't Need Congress
Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta informed Congress this week that it is unnecessary when it comes to military action. Well, at least less necessary than gaining international approval. At issue is whether the administration will take action against Syria to prevent its president, Bashar al-Assad, from brutally suppressing public protest. Panetta says the administration will not take action as it did in Libya, but that, if it did, approval from the UN or NATO would suffice and trump the need for congressional approval.
In a nutshell, this was the problem with Obama's Libyan adventure. For the first time, a president took military action that was not in the immediate national security interest of the United States without so much as giving Congress a formal "heads up." Granted, the War Powers Act gives the president limited authority to conduct military operations, again in the national security interest, before consulting Congress. Panetta, however, contends that the administration has no intention of following this law, regardless of the circumstances.
Congress has the constitutional authority to declare war and must authorize military force with only rare exception. On the other hand, while there are cases in which international approval would be desirable, such as when allies are also threatened, the U.S. never needs this permission before acting in its own self-defense. On top of that, the UN is replete with nations that are hostile to the U.S. and its interests. As usual, the Obama White House has it exactly backwards, and it's an issue on which the stakes could be very high.
Post your opinion on this administration's foreign policy.
FOIA Suit Filed Against Navy Over 'Don't Ask' Repeal
The Thomas More Law Center filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the Department of the Navy in order to "obtain records believed to show intentional deception by the Pentagon to gain congressional support for repeal of the 1993 law regarding open homosexual conduct in the military, usually called 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.'" At issue, specifically, is the possible distortion of a study about the effect open homosexuality would have in the military if "Don't Ask" were repealed. The plaintiffs are also seeking to determine if the Department of Defense fulfilled congressional requirements in order for the repeal to take effect. The first FOIA requests were made in August 2011, but the Navy has yet to respond.
Culture
Second Amendment: Two Victories
Score one -- make that two -- bull's-eyes for the Constitution. This week, judges in two court cases reaffirmed the Second Amendment right to bear arms by striking down two separate gun bans. In Maryland, a federal judge ruled as unconstitutional the state's requirement that individuals provide "good and substantial reason" to purchase a handgun. Addressing a case in which a resident had obtained a gun permit a decade ago after warding off an intruder only to have the permit renewal application denied because he could not show he had been threatened "beyond his residence," the judge noted, "A citizen may not be required to offer a 'good and substantial reason' why he should be permitted to exercise his rights. The right's existence is all the reason he needs." Tally, one.
Meanwhile, in Colorado, the state Supreme Court ruled that the University of Colorado's ban on carrying concealed handguns on campus didn't pass legal muster because the state legislature never approved the ban. Under the state's Concealed Carry Act of 2003, local governments cannot stifle concealed carry rights except in certain specific places, such as private property and K-12 schools. Colleges are not among the exceptions. Tally, two.
Naturally, Second Amendment foes will whine that more guns mean more violence. The evidence, however, is not on their side. Neither, for that matter, is the Constitution.
Obama Bumps Female Commencement Speaker
A few years ago, an article entitled "Obama Invites Self to Deliver Commencement at Women's College" would have been more likely to appear in the satirical rag The Onion. Today, however, it's just another day on the job for a president who will do anything to get re-elected. A large part of his base was, of course, women so appalled by Sarah Palin that socialism became the more palatable choice.
The White House confirmed that it "offered" Obama to speak at Barnard, the prestigious 123-year-old women's college in New York City. Obviously, this was an offer the school couldn't refuse, despite having already announced New York Times executive editor Judith Abramson as the speaker. The irony of this, of course, went unnoticed by Obama, who will use the platform to "advocate for women's rights" -- Leftist-speak for the ObamaCare contraception mandate -- by bumping a woman from the role.
Imagine if George W. Bush had caused the ouster of a female speaker to boost his own popularity. We don't have to imagine the hypocrisy. As already noted, feminists went nuts over Rush Limbaugh's admittedly misguided comments. Yet again, they go for the obvious target and ignore the insidious, infinitely more dangerous one.
It Would Be Top News If...
"A 13-year-old boy who police say was doused with gasoline and lit on fire last week while walking home from school is recovering from first-degree burns to his face and head," reports New York Daily News. The attack happened in Kansas City when two teenagers followed the boy home from school, but what's particularly disturbing is that the perpetrators are black and the victim white. As they lit the fire, the attackers allegedly shouted, "You get what you deserve, white boy!" The boy is in serious condition and we wish him well.
We also wonder, though, if the Obama Justice Department and FBI are calling in agents from all across the nation to deal with this obvious and vicious hate crime. If the races had been reversed, this heinous crime would have trumped every other headline for the next month with regular updates for a year. Such is the double standard under which we live.

Village Academic Curriculum: Teachers Get Free Plastic Surgery
Never mind that Buffalo, New York, schools face a $42 million deficit in next year's budget. Never mind the laid off teachers across the country. Some teachers in the Buffalo school system enjoy the benefits of plastic surgery with absolutely no deductible. Last year, the city's schools spent $5.9 million on plastic surgery such as hair removal, liposuction, rhinoplasty and even breast enhancement. Why? The teachers' contract with the city, including this provision, expired almost 10 years ago, and a new one has not yet been negotiated, so the two parties have merely kept it going by default. The teachers indicate they are willing to part with this particular benefit, but not "unilaterally." Nice to see them putting the kids first.
And Last...
"Campaign officials for President Obama's reelection race announced Wednesday that they are planning to release a 17-minute documentary about his first term in office next week," reports The Washington Post. According to Obama's campaign manager, Jim Messina, the documentary will "put into perspective the enormous challenges that the nation faced when the president took office and the strides we've made together." So it's not so much a documentary as it is a fantasy adventure. Putting aside the spirit of partisanship, however, many conservatives chose to help out with the movie's title. Our staff favorites are "Volt Chariots of Fire," "You've Got Fail," "Dependence Day" and "The Lyin' King." If you can think of any more, we'll be glad to forward them along.

Bringing Rationality to the Rush Limbaugh/Contraception Controversy
This column by ACRU General Counsel and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy (CCPP) Peter Ferrara was published March 8, 2012 on Forbes.com. If you are too poor in America to pay for your own contraceptives, the government already pays for them for you. As Rich Lowry writes in his February 17 column,
"a vast government apparatus exists to provide poor women access to contraceptives, from Medicaid and community health centers to Title X. There are roughly 4,500 Title X-funded clinics around the country. They are required to provide free birth control to the poor and subsidized birth control to people with incomes between 100 percent and 250 percent of poverty."
This assistance for the poor is not at issue today. No one is calling for an end to such public assistance. And if you are not too poor to pay for your own contraceptives, then you should be paying for them yourself. By what reasoning can you argue that I, as a taxpayer, should be paying for them?

Romney's Pending Sellout on Global Warming
This column by ACRU General Counsel and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy (CCPP) Peter Ferrara was published March 7, 2012 on The American Spectator website. The theory that humans are causing catastrophic global warming by burning fossil fuels and releasing "greenhouse" gases lapsed into self-parody in the past couple of weeks with the scandal of Fakegate. Here is the full context to understand that story, which is valuable because it serves as a further revelation and metaphor for the entire fabrication of global warming. On an irregular schedule of roughly every 6 years, the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) produces a voluminous Assessment Report (AR) on the state of so called climate science. The fourth AR was published in 2007, and the fifth is due to be released in four parts over 2013 to 2014. In 2008, the Chicago based Heartland Institute began organizing international conferences of scientists from across the globe who want to raise and discuss intellectually troubling questions and doubts regarding the theory of ultimately catastrophic man caused global warming. Heartland has sponsored six such conferences by now, attracting more than 3,000 scientists, journalists, and interested citizens from all over the world.

Power to the People's Overseers
This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published March 5, 2012 in The Washington Times. Liberals love coercion. They think they're smarter than the rest of us. If they didn't, they wouldn't expend so much effort inventing new rules and laws for our betterment. Just this past week, liberal Democrats imposed the counterfeit of homosexual "marriage" on the people of Maryland, shot down expanded gun rights in Iowa and defeated an amendment in the U.S. Senate restoring conscience protections against the Obama administration's contraceptive and abortifacient mandate to Catholic hospitals. They were joined in the latter by "moderate" Republican Sen. Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, whose announced departure at the end of her term has generated crocodile tears among those whose favorite "moderates" are Republicans who cave on cue.

Pennsylvania defeat RINOs Pileggi and Milne
Dear Patriots,
In Pennsylvania we have a super majority in our House (112 Republicans vs 87 Democrats) and in the Senate, we also have a super majority (30 Republican vs 20 Democrats). Those super majorities are courtesy of the tea party groups that worked so hard to get them elected.
In order to pass anything in the House, we need 101 votes, which you would think would be easy because we have 112 Republican - but unfortunately we have about 22 RINOs and we can only count on 90 conservatives..... that's why we can't pass meaningful BOLD legislation - like in Wisconsin.
The reality is - the two parties in Harrisburg aren't the republicans and democrats - its the UNION PARTY and the TAXPAYER PARTY. The Union Party is made up of 87 Democrats and 22 Republicans and the Taxpayer Party is made up of 90 conservatives. This gives the UNION PARTY - the super majority.
Duane Milne and Dominic Pileggi refuse to take on the serious problems in our state, like:
- the fact that Pennsylvania is one of the WORST states in the country for business, because of
- - regulations
- - environmentalist have too much say and influence on our legislators
- - taxes - the are too high and discourage business
- - oppressive labor laws
- - collective bargaining
- - Unions that force membership and collection of wages
- - Pay to play rules
- - Pensions that are excessive and greedy - often paying 90-100% of salary AND overtime... gold star healthplans with little or no co-pay
Believe it or not, here is what some of Pileggi's priorities are:
1) Installing Red Light Cameras
2) The Library Code - (Library Code???, what about the Unions and the oppressive labor laws? - he won't touch them.....)

89 AW activates two Expeditionary Airlift Squadrons
by Maj. Michelle Lai 89th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
12/5/2011 - JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. -- The 89th Airlift Wing activated the 305th and 306th Expeditionary Airlift Squadrons here, Dec. 1. The squadrons will play an integral role supporting presidential airlift in the coming months.
"This mission provides dedicated assets to our highest priority airlift - presidential support. Air Mobility Command accomplishes this during election years by standing up two squadrons, C-17s based here at Andrews, and C-130s based in Wilmington, Del.," said Col Allan Hess, 89th Operations Group commander.
Aircraft and personnel are prepositioned to support an expected surge in airlift so the Air Force is postured to more efficiently and effectively meet the needs of the commander in chief while remaining good stewards of taxpayer funds.
The 305th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron, commanded by Air National Guard Lt. Col. Alonzo Bristol of the 142nd Airlift Squadron, will operate out of New Castle Air National Guard Base, Del., and will have approximately eight aircrews, 60 maintenance personnel, and about a dozen operations personnel supporting five C-130s.

Liberals and feckless judges can deny it, but the questions about Obama's eligibility remain
Mar 11, 2012 06:13 am | Coach Collins
By George Spelvin, staff writer
Barack Hussein Obama, using eight different names, has failed to meet eligibility requirements for the office of U.S. President according to a 19 point challenge alleging he was born in Kenya to a Kenyan citizen and a teen age mother not old enough to convey U.S. citizenship. Democrat Attorney Philip J. Berg who filed his challenge to the nomination petition with the Pennsylvania Commonwealth on February 23, doubts in Argument 13 that "Obama ever held Natural Born Citizenship status!"
Centering on the NBC clause, Article II, Sect. 1, Clause 5, the eligibility challenge states that Barack Hussein Obama, aka Barack Hussein Soetoro is "not a Natural Born Citizen as defined by the U.S, Constitution. Furthermore, Obama was "born in Kenya on August 4, 1961, (and) at the time of his birth his mother was only 18 years old and not old enough to confer U.S. NBC status to him."

26-year-old William Penn received from King Charles II the charter to Pennsylvania on MARCH 10, 1681, as repayment of a debt owed to his deceased father Admiral Sir William Penn, who captured Jamaica and defeated the Dutch navy.
A student at Oxford, William Penn was expelled for having his own prayer services in his dorm room instead of attending the Anglican chapel.
Penn converted to Quakerism and was imprisoned in the Tower of London.
His colony was a "holy experiment" for persecuted Europeans, one of the few original colonies to accept Mennonites, Amish, Catholics and Jews.
Emphasizing his plan of Christian tolerance, William Penn named the city "Philadelphia," Greek for "Brotherly Love."
History records that since William Penn insisted on treating the Delaware Indians honestly, paying a fair sum for the land, his city of Philadelphia was spared the Indian attacks and scalpings that other colonial settlements experienced.
Before arriving, William Penn wrote ... Continue Reading:American Minute March 10

Politicians decide our 1st Amendment rights could be hazardous to their health
Mar 10, 2012 12:25 pm | Coach Collins
by Doug Book, staff writer
Congress has just made it easier to arrest and convict those who exercise their 1st Amendment rights of protest and assembly.
A number of articles have recently appeared on the web concerning the "Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011," a bill recently passed by Congress which makes it a criminal offense to "impede or disrupt" the activities of the President, Vice President or anyone under the immediate protection of the Secret Service. The measure also makes it illegal to engage in "disorderly behavior" at a special event of "national significance" or in the proximity of a "restricted building or grounds." Anyone who violates a provision of the proposed statute is subject to fine, imprisonment of up to 10 years or both. (1)
In short, Congress figures it would be a good idea to keep tight rein on anyone who demonstrates a little too energetically about the decisions coming ... Continue Reading:Politicians decide our 1st Amendment rights could be hazardous to their health

Israel and Iran: Obama wants a diplomatic solution before November and Israel be dammed Mar 10, 2012 05:13 am | Coach Collins By Jim Emerson, staff writer Iran and Israel have been in the news quite a bit lately, most of the talk lately has been speculation about an Israeli strike of Iranian nuclear facilities and when that might happen. Israel is not taking Iran's nuclear threat lightly because she understands she will most likely be the first target. The prevailing view of the bureaucrats is that Iran doesn't have a nuclear weapon yet but may be very close. Recent analyses of satellite photos show the Iranians are hiding evidence of nuclear trigger testing. Sanctions In an attempt to get the Islamic Republic to halt its undisclosed nuclear weapons program, the United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions and froze the Iranian central bank's assets. This has hurt the general population but has done very little to discourage the regime from its nuclear ambitions. Western governments are hoping the sanctions will create civil unrest similar to the ... Dinesh D'Sousa (author of Roots 0f Obama's Rage) will release his movie "2016", which demonstrates life in America under a second Obama presidency. If we think that the Obama administration has been destructive, wait until he has no further worries about running for another term. Obama's game plan can be taken directly from one of the books he allegedly wrote, "Dreams From My Father."
His new movie in "2016" is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, who has been one of Steven Spielberg's producing partners since Raiders of the Lost Ark. She is responsible for producing films like Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, The Sixth Sense, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and many more. Most recently she worked with Spielberg on the director's two December releases War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin.

THIS WEEKLY MIDDLE EAST REPORT titled Pandering and Platitudes: Obama at AIPAC considers President Obama's speech at AIPAC on Sunday morning, March 4, 2012.
PANDERING AND PLATITUDES: OBAMA AT AIPAC
By: Joseph Puder
The AIPAC policy conference this year attracted more than 13000 individuals, including over 2000 students from nearly 500 campuses - altogether a most impressive achievement. What was less than impressive was President Obama's speech. President Obama was obviously trying to woo Jewish voters and their attendant campaign contributions by making what was clearly an election year speech. Sunday's speech was also full of pandering and platitudes.
Had President Obama been sincere about his "devotion" to Israel, he would have, at some point in his presidency, made a visit to Israel. His only trip to Israel was during the 2008 election campaign - another point in time when he was seeking Jewish votes. Many were surprised to note that once elected, he used the opportunity of a June 2009 trip to Cairo to also visit Saudi Arabia but not Israel. The speech he delivered in Cairo had a distinct pro-Arab and pro-Muslim flavor, and gave one the impression that Israel was created as a result of Holocaust guilt - guilt that should be borne by the Europeans and not the Arabs. His speech also made no mention of the two thousand year longing of the Jewish people to be restored to their biblical homeland. Earlier that year, in April, he had visited Turkey and made no stopover made in Israel.
Obama, in his Sunday morning (March 4, 2012) speech at AIPAC told the audience, "But as you examine my commitment to Israel's security, you don't just have to count on my words. You can look at my deeds, because over the last three years, as President of the U.S, I have kept my commitments to the State of Israel." Yet the one commitment Prime Minister Netanyahu wanted from Obama - U.S. backing for Israeli action against Iran - he did not receive. It is clear that the Obama administration is refusing to act against Iran in advance of the threshold crossing by the Islamic Republic's radical mullahs of nuclear capability, if indeed it has not been crossed it already. Iran's Ahmadinejad assesses the situation in much the same way Hitler did that Obama, like Britain's Chamberlain, will not resort to military action.
In articulating the risks a nuclear Iran would pose to the region, Obama told the polite AIPAC audience, "That is why, four years ago, I made a commitment to the American people, and said that we would use all elements of American power to pressure Iran and prevent it from acquiring a nuclear weapon. And that is what we have done." Not really! The Iranians laughed at the naiveté of the American president who gave them time to produce enough nuclear material for several bombs. Moreover, instead of retaliating forcefully against Iran and its proxies for killing American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, Obama famously declared on January 28, 2009 that "If countries like Iran are willing to unclench their fist, they will find an extended hand from us."
President Obama received a standing ovation from the AIPAC audience when he said: "Iran's leaders should understand that I do not have a policy of containment, I have a policy to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon." Yet, on July 22, 2009, his Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared that, "The U.S. would create a Middle East nuclear umbrella should Iran obtain a nuclear weapon." In other words, the Obama administration is indeed willing to accept a nuclear Iran.
Prime Minister Netanyahu addressed the AIPAC audience on Monday evening (March 5, 2012) and made it clear that Israel cannot and will not wait for Obama's permission to act when Israel's survival is at stake. However disguised and polite, many in the audience gleaned that Netanyahu has been pressured by Obama to refrain from action, and that Israel cannot accept Obama's timetable with regard to Iran.
Obama's failure to support the 2009 Green Revolution in Iran against the brutal regime of President Ahmadinejad and the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei was a major policy failure and diplomatic disaster. Instead of supporting the pro-western opposition, Obama helped strengthen the regime. His statement that "Israel's security is sacrosanct and non-negotiable" and that "my administration's commitment to Israel's security has been unprecedented" is questionable, especially in light of his $60B arms deal with Saudi Arabia and the $3.2B weapons sale to Egypt, which included the delivery of F-16's.
President Obama made sure that members of the Muslim Brotherhood were invited to attend the speech he gave in Cairo, he "threw President Mubarak under the bus" - a partner who was anti-Muslim Brotherhood and, he is increasingly reliant on Turkey's Islamist Prime Minister Erdogan, who he hopes will set things right in Syria by supporting the Muslim Brotherhood there - all of which highlights Obama's failure to support democratic and secular opposition groups while he weakens Israel's strategic and security interests in the region.
Reversing the Bush administration's boycott of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) (based on its flagrant anti-Israel obsession), the Obama administration decided to rejoin the UNHRC in September 2009. President Obama stated that his aim is to have "closer cooperation with the U.N." U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Esther Brimmer, however, in addressing the UNHRC "acknowledged that the U.S. human rights record is imperfect."
And, more directly, it was President Obama who precipitated a crisis with Israel over construction in Jerusalem in March 2010. The Jerusalem Post reported that the Obama Administration "treatment of Netanyahu during his meeting with Obama created the impression of a deep crisis in relations. As Jackson Diehl wrote in the Washington Post, "The White House's refusal to allow non-official photographers record the Obama-Netanyahu meeting, and the fact that no statement was issued afterwards, led to the impression that Netanyahu is being treated as if he were an unsavory Third World dictator, needed for strategic reasons but conspicuously held at arm's length."
Obama's obsession with Israeli construction in Jerusalem had the effect of stiffening Palestinian Authority chairman Abu Mazen's (Mamoud Abbas) demands and rejecting negotiations with Israel.
In addition to isolating Israel and creating the perception that Israel is solely at fault, the President was caught speaking his mind about PM Netanyahu to French President Sarkozy during the November G20 Summit in Cannes when he thought the microphones were off. In response to Sarkozy saying, "Netanyahu, I can't stand him. He's a liar," Obama responded, "You are sick of him, but I have to work with him every day."
The disagreement between Obama and Netanyahu hinges on what they view as a priority. For President Obama it is up to Israel to devise a peace formula that the Palestinians can accept. Netanyahu, on the other hand, faces an existential threat from Iran and wants U.S. backing to eliminate Iran's nuclear threat.
While the Obama administration has maintained strong security cooperation with Israel, its policy failures regarding Iran, Lebanon, Iraq, and Egypt, have created an image of weakness that can only encourage aggression on the part of Iran and its allies. President Obama's platitudes delivered at the AIPAC conference cannot mask the failures of his administration in the Middle East. Nor can his pandering to a pro-Israel audience hide his contempt for Netanyahu, and his risky policy which is allowing Iran time to build nuclear bombs.

Friday, March 9, 2012 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 242 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS Let The Vetting Begin! You may recall that not long after Texas Governor Rick Perry jumped into the GOP contest, the media got ahold of Perry's college transcripts. But we have yet to see Barack Obama's. It is really odd that Obama's college transcripts appear more secure than national security secrets. Just days before he passed away, Andrew Breitbart announced that he was going to do the media's job and fully vet Barack Obama's college days. This would seem to be fertile ground for any enterprising young journalist. After all, Obama wrote in his autobiography that "I chose my friends carefully. The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists and punk-rock performance poets." How did these "Marxist professors and structural feminists" influence young Barack's thinking? That would have been an interesting debate to many Americans in 2008. But I suspect most journalists were uninterested in that debate, either because they counted many "Marxist professors and structural feminists" among their friends or because they were protecting Obama. Or perhaps both. So who were these Marxist professors that Obama sought out in his college days? The first to be uncovered by Breitbart's investigation is the late Harvard Law professor Derrick Bell. In this video, you can see Obama embracing Bell and encouraging folks to "open up your hearts and your minds to the words of Professor Derrick Bell." And what did Bell believe? Bell was a proponent of something called "critical race theory," which holds that America and its institutions are inherently racist. Bell was critical of white liberals and Jews. He embraced Louis Farrakhan. In fact, Bell was so convinced of America's racism that he wrote a story about aliens offering to pay off America's national debt in exchange for selling all blacks into slavery. By the way, the aliens chose to represent themselves through an image of Ronald Reagan. Just imagine if one of the Republican presidential candidates had embraced a white supremacist professor. Imagine if they had sat in the pews of a white supremacist church for twenty years. The media would be up in arms over this revelation. That candidate would be hounded out of the race and run out of the party in a matter of hours. Yet when similar information is revealed about Obama, it is ignored and dismissed out of hand as irrelevant "old news." Is it irrelevant? Or is it one more piece in the puzzle of who Barack Obama is? Bell fits the pattern, and helps to explain why Obama would leave Harvard and then sit in Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years. The "Marxist professor" Bell goes a long way in explaining Obama's socialism, and why Obama's "Justice" Department would dismiss the voter intimidation case against the New Black Panthers. Let the vetting begin! Democrats Defeat Pipeline & Jobs Yesterday Senate Democrats, at the urging of Barack Obama, voted to kill the Keystone XL pipeline. Knowing how popular the pipeline is, Harry Reid had to raise the bar for passage to 60 votes in order to defeat it. And he succeeded -- the vote was 56 to 42. Click here to see how your senators voted. This vote is a gift to the GOP. In spite of the media's efforts to portray Obama as a moderate and cast Republicans as obstructionists, yesterday's vote demonstrated the exact opposite. Eleven Democrats defied Obama and joined all Republicans in voting for the pipeline. This project had strong bi-partisan support, but Obama stood in the way. It should have been the easiest thing in the world for Obama to embrace the pipeline, as Bill Clinton has suggested he do. Obama's former National Security Advisor has said the pipeline is essential. With Ahmadinejad causing trouble in the Middle East, more oil from Canada is a slam dunk. With gas prices rising and millions out of work, more oil and the jobs the pipeline would have created should have been a no brainer. But yesterday's vote is more evidence of just how captive Obama and Senate Democrats are to the left's extreme environmental ideology. Remind your friends and family members about this vote the next time they complain after filling up their tanks! "The Romney Divide" The Wall Street Journal's Kimberley Strassel writes today about the difficulty the GOP front-runner is having in closing the deal with primary voters. Referring to the "Romney divide," Strassel notes that while Romney is doing well with "college grads" and "the more affluent," he is struggling with the "very conservative, the tea partiers and the evangelicals." In other words, the base of the party! But rather than confronting this problem, Strassel notes that his top advisors are almost contemptuous. For example:
"A senior campaign aide airily dismissed Mr. Romney's Super Tuesday weaknesses, noting: 'The areas we didn't do as well in are rural and they are more anti-Obama.' Meaning, who else are these guys going to vote for come November? How about: no one. They could stay home."
America cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama. But as important as it is for Republican voters to stand with our nominee, it is equally important that the nominee not write off or alienate significant portions of the GOP base. Strassel concludes by writing, "The Romney Divide isn't unbridgeable. But if the governor wants to be welcomed by those distant voting groups, he needs to do the jumping." "Santorum & Freedom" Wanting to know how Rick Santorum has rocketed from the back of the pack to emerge as a serious challenger for the GOP nomination, the Wall Street Journal's Daniel Henninger traveled to Ohio recently to observe the Santorum campaign. Contrary to the media's narrative, Henninger found that Santorum wasn't preaching about morality, but freedom. You can read his column here. Government Gone Wild Here are two stories certain to get your blood pressure up. Wednesday the Washington Times reported that the District of Columbia has received nearly $900 million in stimulus money since 2009 but can't account for a single new job. In fact, according to the Times the employment situation in the nation's capital has gotten worse! Consider this excerpt:
"In the District, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate has increased by 8 percent since 2009, as the D.C. government was receiving historic levels of federal stimulus funding via contracts, grants, loans, tax benefits and entitlements."
If that waste of your tax dollars didn't send your blood pressure through the roof, this one might. The Washington Post reported yesterday that the government awarded a $10 million grant last year for the production of a new energy efficient light bulb. According to the Post, "Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the prize would spur industry to offer the costly bulbs, known as LEDs, at prices 'affordable for American families.'" So, what did the big government geniuses conclude was "affordable for American families"? Again, quoting from the Post: "Now the winning bulb is on the market. The price is $50." No, that's not a typo. The article goes on, "How the expensive bulb won a $10 million government prize meant to foster energy-efficient affordability is one of the curiosities that arise as the country undergoes a massive, mandated turnover from traditional incandescent lamps to more energy-efficient ones." Curiosities? It's an outrage! And another example of government gone wild. But, then again, this is coming from the same Energy Secretary who once said that he wants gas here to cost as much as it does in Europe. |
Tasked with administering and enforcing the state's anti-discrimination laws, the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC) has become entangled in aiding an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood in its goal of stigmatizing and silencing any criticism of Islam or Muslims, including those engaged in terrorism.
The law that created the PHRC empowers it to:
Track incidents of bias that may cause community tension and to educate the general public, law enforcement, educators, and government officials in order to prevent discrimination and foster equal opportunity.
Occurrences labeled "bias incidents" are logged into a monthly "bias report" that is forwarded to the Pennsylvania State Police, who decide whether to investigate items appearing there. Thus, the PHRC generates a government-sanctioned report card on the level and types of intergroup tensions and possible hate crimes within the commonwealth. In the words of one PHRC official:
We use the bias report to inform the Legislature about trends and for our community education purposes.
In a better world, this course of action might be considered admirable. But in Harrisburg a system has evolved by which CAIR-PA,[1] the local affiliate of the Council on American-Islamic Relations - an organization declared an unindicted co-conspirator in America's most significant terror financing trial - can manipulate data and push the pernicious myth that the U.S. is filled with hateful, anti-Muslim citizens.
