America's Iranian Self-Deception

Let's admit the facts about its nuclear program and then have an honest debate about what to do.

Americans are being played for fools by Iran-and fooling themselves. There is no case to be made that Iran is not pursuing a nuclear weapons capability. There is no evidence that Iran's decision-makers are willing to stop the nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions or anything else. The International Atomic Energy Agency reported on Friday that it has made no progress in its negotiations with Iran and that Iran continues to accelerate its enrichment operations, which are in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and agreements with the IAEA.

Yet the policy discussion in the U.S. is confused. Former Ambassador Dennis Ross writes that the Iranians are ready for talks. Anonymous administration officials refer to one of the most dangerous Iranian nuclear installations, Fordow, outside the city of Qom, as "a Potemkin facility." The media are full of comparisons to Iraq in 2003, when suspicions that Iraq was pursuing a covert nuclear program led to war.

 

People are conflating intelligence assessment with policy recommendation. The prospect of war with Iran is so distasteful that people are desperate to persuade themselves that the problem is not serious.


IAEA inspectors on the ground at Iran's nuclear facilities reported the following facts on Friday: Iran's inventory of centrifuges enriching uranium isotopes has been steadily expanding, along with the stockpiles of uranium enriched to 3.5% and 20%-important stages on the road to weapons-grade uranium. Iran has installed and run advanced centrifuges in the Natanz Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant. Iran has buried an enrichment facility under a small mountain at Fordow, installed air-defense systems around it, and brought new centrifuges online there.

Over the years, many friends of Hillsdale, those who never attended college here, have said to me: "Dr. Arnn, I wish I could take Hillsdale's Constitution course!"

In response to these requests, this past year, for the first time ever, Hillsdale College offered the "Introduction to the Constitution" lecture series at no charge. Frankly, I wasn't sure what sort of a response a course like this would have.

 

That's why I was excited to see that YOU and almost 200,000 other people from all over the United States registered for "Introduction to the Constitution."

Thank you very much for registering and participating. I hope you learned a lot from the series.

 

I was thrilled, not only by the response, but at what it indicates: Americans are willing and eager learn about the Constitution and to defend the principles of liberty that made America so prosperous!

The bad news is last month some well intentioned political activist announced a cut-off date for signing up co-sponsors for Rep. Rose Marie Swanger's American Law's for American Courts (HB 2029) in an effort to inject some urgency into the effort.  

 

What it resulted in was an interruption of the campaign to encourage those Representatives not yet signed on as co-sponsors to join with those Legislators who have already recognized the death by smothering threat to our Constitution.

 

The good news is there is no cut-off date for adding co-sponsors and we are once again asking your readers to contact their representatives and ask they join the battle.

 

There are only three Representatives from Bucks who are co-sponsors, Representatives Clymer, Petri and Quinn and we thank them for showing their colors.

 

But that leaves seven more Representatives who appear to be still standing on the sidelines as the battle for our existence as a free people is joined.

Our laws have worked just fine since colonial times. What is needed are politicians who respect them. And you know whose job it is to remind them of that.

True the Vote [1] issued a press release yesterday [2] detailing preliminary results of their recall analysis. While the unions will likely get the approximately 540,000 petitions they needed to force a recall vote against Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, hundreds of thousands of submitted petitions had problems. Following is the breakdown:

The organization responsible for the recall is United Wisconsin [3], a PAC backed by the usual suspects: the National Education Association'sWisconsin affiliate [4], the American Federation of Teachers [5]AFSCME [6], a "progressive" group named One Wisconsin Now [7], and theWisconsin Democrat Party [8]. Well funded, the group used Cloward-Piven [9] swamping tactics to overwhelm the tiny Wisconsin Government Accountability Board - tasked with certifying the recall - with questionable petitions. Not surprisingly, GAB announced they would make only spot checks, claiming they didn't have the manpower for a full review.

But a full check was in order as many inconsistencies immediately appeared. The number of blank, incomplete, invalid and outright fraudulent petitions makes clear United Wisconsin's intentions. One Democrat even appears to have entered his brother's name four separate times [10]. His brother was against the recall. He also signed up his mother, other family members and possibly even neighbors without their assent or knowledge. The entire effort recalls the familiar Democrat battle cry: "Win, even if you have to sell your mother."

 

The big news here, however, is the massive, rapid response to assure the legitimacy of this recall, and the groundswell of support it received from all over the country. Partnering with Wisconsin Grandsons of Liberty [11] and We the People of the Republic [12]True the Vote [1] created an online platform for processing and checking the 1.5 + million petitions. A call went out and over 14,000 volunteers from 49 states responded to help input the data. They have so far analyzed over 91 percent of the records in 22 days! The system uses a triple-blind check to assure accuracy. Each petition has been independently reviewed an average of 2.67 times.

Everywhere I go I hear the same question from concerned Americans: "What can we do?" True the Vote has created the perfect answer, a system that allows you to pitch in from the comfort and safety of your own home. There is yet more work to do and they are still looking [13] for volunteers.

Vote fraud is the most important battle we have to face this year. Wikileaks has just revealed [14] that the Democrats engaged in massive fraud in 2008. 2012 will be worse. Now is the time to jump in [13].

John Stossel's new book, "No, They Can't: Why Government Fails-but Individuals Succeed," argues: "There ought not to be a law." Stossel explains how politicians promise to solve problems by passing laws, but the laws invariably make our problems worse.


After years of obeying our parents, we are programmed to think that anytime there is a problem, whether it's companies going bankrupt or schools keeping kids stupid, government action is the way to solve it. Using his decades of reporting, Stossel tackles how those intuitive, knee-jerk reactions lead us astray.

Central planning sounds right. It feels good. But it has nothing to do with the realities of economics and science. There is nothing that government can do that we cannot do better as free individuals - and as groups of individuals, working together voluntarily, not at the point of a gun or under threat of a fine. Without big government, our possibilities are limitless.

"My state Rep. Warren Kampf responded to my question about where the Voter ID bill stands in Harrisburg. His response appears at end of this emaiI. It seems clear that unless we apply pressure to the state senate government committee,this bill will go nowhere.
My questions for them are: Where do you stand on the bill? What are you doing to move it out of committee? If you oppose it, tell me why. Who on the committee is against it, and why?

Thank you for the email regarding Voter ID (House Bill 934).
The House passed Voted ID on June 23rd. I voted for this bill if you will remember. It is now the responsibility of the Senate to take action to continue to move HB 934 forward.
I would advise you to contact the Senators who comprise the Senate State Government Committee, those in Senate leadership positions and your local Senator to let them know of your desire to move this forward. Also you may ask for an accounting of why this has been held up and not considered.

Voter Cheating

You know, comrades," says Stalin, "that I think in regard to this: I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this - who will count the votes, and how. (Boris Bazhanov's Memoirs of Stalin's Former Secretary,1992, only available in Russian.
Russia's Vladimir Putin is accused of voter fraud and failure to solve problems with health care availability, immigration control, and unsustainable pensions. Sound familiar? Absolutely. Will he lie? Absolutely. But unlike Obama's ACORN, he will probably admit it.

Background

There are several lines of independent evidence for cheating in the 2012 election:

a)     12/30/11, Voter ID: PA House Bill 934

Eric Holder has ordered his staff not to meddle with cases of voter fraud that involve minorities (J. Christian Adams has written widely about such cases), Salina Zito (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review) predicted that PA in November '12 will go according to the Philadelphia suburbs, ACORN has both a record for voter scams and operates new sites in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, our State Attorney General is stepping aside, and there is little public information about Mayor Nutter's views on this matter. Meanwhile, there is an early February deadline from our Governor as Republicans in the PA legislature attempt to define a list of acceptable IDs and Democrats cry that minorities and old people can't handle this demand.
 I smell more fraud from a bunch- ACORN - already known nationally for fraud and Corbett's February deadline invites some deliberate lapse by the D's...And intrusion by Eric Holder would stall our ID program until after ACORN has done their job for BO ...

b)     Jeffrey Kuhner, Washington Times: BO & Voter ID

"...South Carolina's legislation provides for free ID cards to be given to anyone who needs it. Not one person - white, black or brown - is discriminated against or discouraged from casting a vote at the ballot box. Moreover, the Supreme Court already has ruled on the issue - upholding state voter ID laws. In the 2008 Crawford v. Marion County Election Board decision, the high court held that an Indiana law mandating photo identification at the voting booth was indeed constitutional. If it is good enough for the Supreme Court and the overwhelming majority of the states, then it should be for Mr. Holder as well.
"It isn't. And the reason is simple: The administration is trying to whip up minority frenzy, propagating the myth of widespread ballot suppression..."

c)      Daryl Metcalf, Morning Call: Electoral Integrity (June 18, 2011)

Metcalf is a Republican from Butler County (north of Pittsburgh)
"Pennsylvania has a long and ongoing history of documented voter fraud - pre-dating even the frequently forged signature of Mickey Mouse to at least the election of 1918.
"Of course, no statewide analysis of voter fraud would be complete without briefly documenting the deeply rooted influence of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

d)     Christopher Freind, PA Water Cooler:  No ID, No Vote,... Comprende? (June 21, 2011)

"I am not wealthy, but have recently acquired twenty two domiciles throughout Philadelphia. My real estate prowess has afforded me a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our citizens.
"I can vote twenty-two times.
"You see, I have staked out prime locations, from a cardboard box under the Walt Whitman Bridge to a culvert on Cobbs Creek Parkway to a burnt out shell at 7th and Diamond. Yes, technically, habitating at these locations makes me 'homeless,' but I much prefer the term 'voter-enfranchised.' When you have such a love of democracy, how can anyone have a problem with people who want to vote multiple times, especially the homeless? (Although, in fairness, dead people should only be able to vote once).

There must be some benefit to Republicans if they ignore voter fraud. For example, my acquaintance publishes lists of Republicans who take contributions from unions and refusing to vote against union interests. And conservative Lowman Henry has spoken about the legislative impasse, particularly in the State Senate, produced by about twenty-five who get their money from organized labor.
Thus, Nicole Marrone's conclusion is still valid as is Christopher Freind's:
"The city of Philadelphia is known for many things: The Liberty Bell, cheesesteaks, water ice, and Santa Claus-booing Eagles fans. There is a bright light on our horizon even though Salena Zito asserted that Pennsylvania electoral votes will depend on turn out in the Philadelphia suburbs:
 
 "Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter didn't mince words after four kids were shot and three killed in Philadelphia Tuesday night.
"The first way to stop this kind of stuff is for young people to be home when they're supposed to be home, and for adults not to act like idiots and assholes out in the streets of our city shooting at kids in a car," Nutter told FOX 29...
A spokesperson for the mayor told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Nutter stood by his statement.
"He said what he said. He was clear about it, and he meant it. He said what everybody else was thinking," said spokesman Mark McDonald..."

What are Mayor Mike's reactions to fraud? Does he value "value" above "deals"?
Meanwhile, many Pennsylvanians look to Harrisburg to pass a "Voter ID" law that requires each of us to carry a card with our photo and address on it. Our Governor also says that he needs the law in place by the first week of February if it is to be used this coming November.
On the other hand, I recall my son's friends in college fattening their wallets by selling bogus photo ID to students who wanted to buy liquor. I'm sure ACORN knows how to do such things.
The ID cards will make cheating a bit more difficult and more expensive for organizers and possibly, but not necessarily, less frequent. And the rest of us will pay the bills for cheaters...

Campaign For Liberty

Deception, betrayal, and dishonesty.

These are not appealing traits in elected officials, but sadly, they aptly describe many Republican lawmakers across the country feverishly working to implement ObamaCare.

Would you believe that Governor Tom Corbett is among those Republicans diligently complying with ObamaCare
?

Despite the fact that Pennsylvania is party to the lawsuit being heard before the Supreme Court, Tom Corbett is implementing the law in our state.

ObamaCare requires that each state set up what is known as a Health Insurance Exchange. In theory, these exchanges will be one-stop online shops where individuals will pool together to purchase insurance.

Without a state-created exchange, the individual mandate cannot be enforced.

As in all bureaucracies, there are some major downfalls, not the least of which is the anticipated spike in the cost of insurance.

Other significant issues include:

  • The federal government will dictate what insurers may participate
  • The federal government will decide minimum coverage-potentially including such elective procedures as breast augmentation and face lifts
  • The federal government will stipulate how the exchange is run

I could go on, but I'm certain you recognize the theme. The federal government will control every aspect of our health care.
 
Yet, Governor Corbett claims that establishing CorbettCare will protect Pennsylvania citizens from undue federal regulation.

The opposite is actually true. Creation of the CorbettCare Exchange does great harm and forces onerous federal regulations on our state.

Governor Corbett is readily ceding state Sovereignty to the central government, and relinquishing all authority on health care matters.

Our state has already requested and accepted over $33 million to set up the exchange
!

Merely accepting and spending federal funds requires absolute obedience to federal government regulations, and the loss of state sovereignty.

A key responsibility of state officials is to protect our sovereignty, yet our legislators may be considering legislation to assist in the establishment of CorbettCare.

And like obedient little children, these turncoats expect you to forget their empty promises, ignore their campaign rhetoric, and blame the Federal Government for all of the many losses you will suffer as a result.

With over $1 billion at stake, and more than $700 million already sent to complicit states, it's easy to understand why greedy politicians have their hands out before the court can rule.

These funds are being used all over the country to enrich political allies and the well-connected. Millions of your taxpayer dollars are being wasted, and you are footing the bill while they steal your freedoms.

Those hundreds of millions will never be returned to our treasury-unless you and I do something to force the issue now.

Tell your legislators that even if the Supreme Court fails to overturn ObamaCare, you expect them to protect your rights and jealously guard our state sovereignty by refusing to establish a state exchange.

The "threshold bill" will end the artificially low estimated cost of total project from $25,000 to conform to the Consumer Price Index of the previous calendar year. The current amount was based on the 1963 Consumer Price Index and allowed prevailing wage to kick in at too low a threshold making it a costly endeavor for school districts and municipalities to fund minor projects.

Is The IRS Attempting to Intimidate Local Tea Parties?


Richmond, Va | RightSideNews.com | In January and February of this year, the Internal Revenue Service began sending out letters to various local Tea Party groups across the country. Mailed from the same Cincinnati, Ohio IRS office, these letters have reached Tea Party groups in Virginia, Hawaii, Ohio and Texas (we are hearing of more daily). There are several common threads to these letters: all are requesting more information from these independent Tea Parties in regard to their nonprofit 501c4 applications (for these types of nonprofit, donations are not deductible). While some of the requests are reasonable, much of them are strikingly onerous and, dare I say, Orwellian in nature.


What are local Tea Partiers to think with requests like "Please identify your volunteers " or are there board members or other officers who have run or will run for office (including relatives)"? What possible reason would the IRS have for Tea Parties to "name your donors " when said donations are non-deductible? These are just a few of the questions asked by the IRS in these letters, and one cannot help but suspect an intrinsic threat encompassing all these demands. (see more letters below).

A growing threat to our freedom of speech is the attempt to stifle religious discussion in the name of preventing "defamation of" or "insults to" religion, especially Islam. Resulting restrictions represent, in effect, a revival of blasphemy laws.

Few in the West were concerned with such laws 20 years ago. Even if still on some statute books, they were only of historical interest. That began to change in 1989, when the late Ayatollah Khomeini, then Iran's Supreme Leader, declared it the duty of every Muslim to kill British-based writer Salman Rushdie on the grounds that his novel, The Satanic Verses, was blasphemous. Rushdie has survived by living his life in hiding. Others connected with the book were not so fortunate: its Japanese translator was assassinated, its Italian translator was stabbed, its Norwegian publisher was shot, and 35 guests at a hotel hosting its Turkish publisher were burned to death in an arson attack.

More recently, we have seen eruptions of violence in reaction to Theo van Gogh's and Ayaan Hirsi Ali's film Submission, Danish and Swedish cartoons depicting Mohammed, the speech at Regensburg by Pope Benedict XVI on the topic of faith, reason, and religious violence, Geert Wilders' film Fitna, and a false Newsweek report that the U.S. military had desecrated Korans at Guantanamo. A declaration by Terry Jones-a deservedly obscure Florida pastor with a congregation of less than 50-that he would burn a Koran on September 11, 2010, achieved a perfect media storm, combining American publicity-seeking, Muslim outrage, and the demands of 24 hour news coverage. It even drew the attention of President Obama and senior U.S. military leaders. Dozens of people were murdered as a result.

2. Andrew Breitbart, 1969-2012

It's always tough to lose a friend. It's exponentially tougher when that friend leaves behind a wife and four children, who will no longer have their husband and father in their lives, and who should remain in all our prayers.

Add to that just how huge a figure Andrew Breitbart had become in the conservative movement, and you will begin to understand just how big a loss we all suffered yesterday, when we lost a giant.

 

3. A Supernova Now Dark

There will be a number of posts from people on this site and others today about Andrew Breitbart. Editorially, you're supposed to have one post that everyone can rally around, but Andrew Breitbart was such a multifaceted fascinating renaissance man. We each have our own descriptions and stories of Breitbart.

When I first heard the news I thought it was another twitter hoax. But it sadly is not.

Andrew Breitbart was, in every room I ever saw him in, the brilliant bright light and ball of energy people gravitated to and fixated on. It is like a supernova has gone dark.

 

4. After the Fact, Romney's Supporters in Michigan Seemingly Rewrite the Delegate Rules

According to the Michigan Republican Party rules, each candidate who wins a congressional district will win a delegate per district. Romney and Santorum split the districts, so they each got 14 delegates. There are two statewide delegates.

The statewide delegates are divided based on a mathematic calculation for each candidate who gets over 15% of the vote. In Michigan, as Right Michigan explains, Romney and Santorum each got one.

So while Romney got just shy of 2% more of the vote than Santorum in Michigan, he and Santorum split the statewide delegates and wound up tied 15 to 15 in Michigan.

But the Romney camp cannot have that. This is Romney's home state. Romney has to win.

So last night, the Michigan GOP's Credentials Committee voted to take a delegate away from Santorum and give it Mitt Romney.

They claim this had all been decided back on February 4, 2012, but it is clear from the memo documenting that meeting that no one else read the delegate count that way.

Perhaps someone smarter and better than I should handle this latest moral outrage of the Secular Anti-Humanists. It deserves opposition greater than that which I could provide alone. However, if nobody protested maybe the very stones would cry out.

The United Kingdom once had a great and venerable institution of higher learning known throughout the entire world as The Oxford University. The school still exists; the greatness can no longer be attested to without vigorous moral dispute. They have financed research for an article entitled "After-birth abortion: why should the baby live?" written by Alberto Giubilini and Francesca Minerva. The abstract of this despicable work of Anti-Humanism follows below.

"Abortion is largely accepted even for reasons that do not have anything to do with the fetus' health. By showing that (1) both fetuses and newborns do not have the same moral status as actual persons, (2) the fact that both are potential persons is morally irrelevant and (3) adoption is not always in the best interest of actual people, the authors argue that what we call 'after-birth abortion' (killing a newborn) should be permissible in all the cases where abortion is, including cases where the newborn is not disabled."

Tell your liberal friend that it's growing so fast there's a danger that within a few decades it might reach the southern borders of the United States, menacing our great-grandchildren with its evil leafy tendrils and its deadly population of jaguars, bullet ants, snakes, killer bees, and such like. You think we exaggerate? According to a January 2009 report in the New York Times-and what liberal could ignore the voice of Pravda?-"For every acre of rainforest cut down each year, more than 50 acres are growing." Do the math. Then be afraid. Very afraid. And start stockpiling the Agent Orange.

Subject:Senate Votes Against Religious Freedom 51-48
The United States Senate just voted 51-48 to gut the First Amendment.

Commrad ReidMoments ago, the Democratic-controlled Senate led by Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada (pictured at the right) refused to restore religious liberty for all Americans, including our Catholic schools, hospitals, and charitable ministries. The roll call is below.

Senator Roy Blunt's amendment was offered to stop President Obama's unprecedented assault on our religious liberty. Obama's HHS mandate will soon force every employer, including Catholic hospitals, universities and religious organizations to pay for insurance policies that will offer contraception and abortion drugs for their employees.

The new mandate not only attacks our Church, but also threatens the freedom of every insurance company, every business and every American citizen.

Just think: 51 U.S. Senators just voted to affirm the right of our government to force you to pay for morally reprehensible drugs and procedures -- including drugs that destroy an innocent human life.

And we know this is only the beginning.

What do we do now?

The Catholic vote has been the center of attention in this debate.

We knew the vote would be close in the Senate, and so we have also been lobbying leaders in the House to answer the Senate with a vote FOR religious liberty. As of today, the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act has 220 co-sponsors and counting.

We are now calling on the House to likewise put every Representative on the record with a vote.

We are also working with legal experts to help bring new lawsuits to defeat this mandate in the courts.

And of course, we MUST vindicate our rights at the ballot box in November. The facts are plain: we need a new President and a new Senate. And this is entirely possible this year.

Finally, please do not fall for the trap. Do not despair!

Pray now that our fellow citizens will have the fortitude to persevere in this fight.

We know that every challenge for us is an opportunity to witness to our Faith.

What a glorious opportunity we have ahead of us.

No vote by a group of politicians will stop us from serving Our Lord.

Obama has his own Domino Doctrine for the Muslim world. As a consequence of this doctrine, Obama's Iranian Nuclear policy can be summed up as "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing" and Saudi Arabia is in even more danger than Israel.

Remember, for one second, in January 2011, before even a dozen demonstrators were killed, a small herd of camel-riding Mubarakists rode into Tahrir Square trampling some protesters underfoot, and Obama immediately flew into an apoplectic rage, gliding close to personally claiming that Mubarak was a war criminal for attacking peaceful "democratic" demonstrators.

But in February 2012, after Assad has murdered over 10,000 Sunni mostly totally unarmed civilians by lobbing barrages of multiple rounds of artillery into Homs, why is Obama all but numbingly silent in-between his own barrages of multiple rounds of 18-hole golf?

 

The reason: the US President Obama has artfully and silently pivoted US Middle East Policy from a Pro-Saudi, Anti-Iran paradigm to a Pro-Iran, Anti-Saudi imperative.

Not just once, but multiple times.

One of those apologized to was Mohamed Magid, president of ISNA (Islamic Society of North America).

  • ISNA is one of 29 organizations listed as "friends" in the Muslim Brotherhood strategy memo calling for "civilization jihad" against America.
  • ISNA was an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing trial.

Let's all remember that militant Muslims defaced these Qur'ans in violation of sharia law. These jihadist enemy combatants were using the Qur'ans to pass messages to each other.

STERLING, Virginia (AP) - A senior Pentagon official apologized Friday to Washington-area Muslims for the burning of Qurans at a military base in Afghanistan.

 

Peter Lavoy, acting assistant secretary of defense for Asia and Pacific security affairs, said the military is investigating what occurred and that all 140,000 coalition troops in Afghanistan are being retrained in the handling of religious materials.

 

Lavoy apologized multiple times during a brief speech during prayer services at the ADAMS Center in Sterling, one of the largest mosques in the country.

"I come here today to apologize on behalf of the Department of Defense for the incident that took place in Afghanistan this week," Lavoy told worshippers, saying the burnings were done "unknowingly and improperly."

Arthur Jones is running for the Republican nomination in Illinois's 3rd Congressional District, which includes Chicago's South Side, to take on the Democratic incumbent, Congressman Dan Lipinski.

 

As it turns out, Jones believes the Holocaust was invented for monetary purposes by the Jews.

 

"As far as I'm concerned, the Holocaust is nothing more than an international extortion racket by the Jews," Jones said. "It's the blackest lie in history. Millions of dollars are being made by Jews telling this tale of woe and misfortune in books, movies, plays and TV.

Yet campus incitement against Israel has been growing from California to the New York Island. A conference at Harvard next week called "Israel/Palestine and the One-State Solution" is but the latest aggression in an escalating campaign against the Jewish state.

The sequence is by now familiar: Arab student groups and self-styled progressives organize a conference or event like "Israeli Apartheid Week," targeting Israel as the main problem of the Middle East. They frame the goals of these events in buzzwords of "expanding the range of academic debate." But since the roster of speakers and subjects makes their hostile agenda indisputable, university spokespersons scramble to dissociate their institutions from the events they are sponsoring. Jewish students and alums debate whether to ignore or protest the aggression, and newspapers fueling the story give equal credence to Israel's attackers and defenders.

Syria's embattled regime is likely to hold out for many more months but eventually could implode with many dangerous consequences for the surrounding region. One of the risks is that chemical weapons-and possibly radioactive materials from its nuclear program-could fall into the hands of terrorists. The U.S. needs a strategy for the worst-case scenario. Washington must closely monitor the evolving situation in Syria and make contingency plans in cooperation with allies to prevent the proliferation of such dangerous weapons, if necessary.

Keeping the Lid on Pandora's Box

 

Syria's Baathist dictatorship developed and stockpiled a lethal arsenal of chemical weapons including blister agents such as mustard gas and even more dangerous nerve agents. These chemical munitions can be delivered by artillery, rocket launchers, Scud ballistic missiles, and aircraft. Damascus also cooperated with North Korea (and probably Iran) to develop a covert nuclear program, which Israel partially destroyed in a 2007 air strike. Radioactive materials from this program could become ingredients for a "dirty bomb" if they fall into the hands of terrorists.

Obama: "Son of Islam"?

According to Sharia law, if one's father is Muslim, one automatically becomes Muslim. "Most of the Muslims I know (me included) can't seem to accept that Obama is not a Muslim."

Many in the media are indignant with Reverend Franklin Graham, head of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Invited on "Morning Joe" last Tuesday to discuss Christian persecution, Graham was asked whether he thought President Barack Obama was Christian or not. Although Graham concluded that Obama "has said he is a Christian, so I just have to assume that he is," he appeared skeptical, suggesting Obama's policies disagreed with Christian principles, thus earning the full ire of much of the fourth estate.

 

Graham, however, was absolutely right to say that, "under Islamic law, the Muslim world sees Barack Obama as a Muslim, as a son of Islam": according to Sharia law [Islamic religious law, which regulates all parts of a Muslim's life], if one's father is Muslim, one automatically becomes Muslim. The reason behind last week's church attack in Egypt, when thousands of Muslims tried to torch a church and kill its pastor, is that a Christian girl fled from her father after he converted to Islam: she did not want to be Muslim, and was rumored to be hiding in the church. This is not the first time in recent months that churches have been attacked on similar rumors.

In short, Sharia law's position is that anyone born to a Muslim father is a Muslim-with the death penalty should they seek to apostatize: the 34-year-old Iranian pastor sentenced to death simply for converting to Christianity is just the most visible example.

Bernanke: US Recovery Could Go Off 'Massive Fiscal Cliff'

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Wednesday offered a tempered view of the U.S. economy, pouring cold water on the notion recent upbeat signs herald a stronger recovery.

Bernanke told Congress that unless growth accelerated, the unacceptably high U.S. unemployment rate would not keep dropping.

But he stopped short of signaling further Fed bond purchases, dashing the hopes of some traders in financial markets who were betting on more monetary stimulus.

"The job market is far from normal," Bernanke said.

Andrew Breitbart, a Republican media mogul from Los Angeles has died. He reportedly collapsed while walking near his home in Brentwood shortly after midnight early Thursday morning. He died, of natural causes, in the hospital. He was 43 years old.

 

Breitbart, who once proudly called himself a "biased journalist," worked at the Drudge Report and the Huffington Post before starting his own family of conservative web-based media outlets. He is best known for publishing the damning photographs in 2011 that forced Anthony Weiner, then a Democratic congressman from New York, to resign.

Control freaks assault the land of the free

"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction," warned the late President Reagan. It's probably a good thing the Gipper hasn't been forced to witness what the current generation of authoritarian rulers has done to the land of the free and home of the brave.

Public schools in San Antonio have installed video cameras, not to monitor for foul play or intruders, but to spy on kids' eating habits. Federal food police in North Carolina have begun confiscating preschoolers' homemade lunches because they didn't meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines. Aghast parents have noted that one 4-year-old's confiscated lunch of a turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips and apple juice sounds more nutritious than the state-provided chicken nuggets. But that entirely misses the point. In America, parents are free to give their kids pizza and pudding with Twinkies and Twizzlers, and the government has no right to intrude.

Under the sweeping powers of Obamacare, the state has forced Catholic institutions to choose between their God and their government by demanding that they violate their own beliefs and provide birth control to their employees. Their insulting rationalization? Most Catholic women are bad Catholics and don't follow the teachings of the church anyway. What's more, the government has deified itself to determine which organizations are Catholic enough to be exempt. What's next, mandated pork-chop night at the synagogues? Bacon should be a right.

Brace yourself; I'm just getting warmed up.

Armed federal agents of the Department of Education conducted a pre-dawn SWAT-style raid on the home of a Stockton, Calif., man. Read that again: The Department of Education has taken up arms against the citizenry. Meanwhile, federal Transportation Security Administration officials routinely grope our 6-year-olds and conveniently arrange that attractive women are subjected to their full-body porn cameras. Not even George Orwell's 1984 dystopian police state went that far.

So the same federal government that waved the white flag in southern Arizona by posting signs warning American citizens to avoid American soil - effectively surrendering an 80-mile swath of our border to Mexican drug cartels - at least has the wherewithal to secure your child's private parts.

But the heavy-handed authoritarians aren't finished harassing your kids yet. Police officers in Midway, Ga., closed down three girls' front-yard lemonade stand. Why? "We were not aware of how the lemonade was made, who made the lemonade, of what the lemonade was made with, so we acted accordingly by city ordinance." Well, at least the enterprise-crushing control freaks can't be accused of age discrimination.

Fortunately, the feds are concentrating on the most ominous threats against Americans: fresh dairy milk and the ruthless Amish farmers who push their addictive contraband. "I can't believe in 2012 the federal government is raiding Amish farmers at gunpoint, all over a basic human right to eat natural food," said one milk addict. Believe it.

Back to the Golden State. Los Angeles County control freaks made a quick about-face after declaring that throwing a football or a Frisbee on the beach would result in a $1,000 fine. So would digging a hole in the sand. Quick - confiscate those plastic pails! Control freaks in the California Legislature, you may recall, recently attempted to mandate the use of government-controlled thermostats in homes and businesses. Why not? President Obama, the control freak in chief, once decreed: "We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times." Well, not with Democrats in charge, anyway.

Power-grabbing Democrats always promise if we give them the power to control our lives, they will use it only in times of emergency. Of course, emergencies are in the eye of the beholder, and dictatorial power for control-freak Democrats is like whiskey was for 20th-century comedian W.C. Fields: "Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite and furthermore, always carry a small snake." Democrats will make sure there's a snakebite soon enough.

Our land of the free is under assault by control freaks, most of whom call themselves "pro-choice" but simply don't trust you to choose your own light bulbs, salt intake or home thermostat settings. They even want to regulate how much methane gas your cow can expel. One wishes politicians were as concerned with debt reduction as bovine flatus.

Reagan warned of freedom lost: "We didn't pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States, where men were free."

Regime in panic over possible demise of ObamaCare in Supreme Court

Though Nancy Pelosi responded with a glib "Are you serious" to a reporter's question about the Constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act shortly after the measure's passage, her leftist comrades in the Department of Justice are not being dismissive of the issue any more.

In August, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unconstitutional the "minimum coverage provision" or individual mandate which requires everyone purchase Obama-approved health insurance and penalizes those who do not.  Judges Frank Hull and Joel Dubina of the 11th Circuit ruled that such an arrangement exceeds the power of Congress to regulate "commerce among the several states," in this particular instance, commerce being the sale and purchase of insurance.

Obama's legal brain trust had perhaps hoped the powers of Congress under the Constitution's Commerce Clause would be enough to safely see ObamaCare through a flock of waiting appeals and into full operation. FEBRUARY 29 is Leap Day.

In 45 B.C., Julius Caesar replaced the calendars used throughout the Roman Empire based on the moon's cycles with a calendar based on the sun, having 365 days and a "leap" day every 4th year.
It was modified by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to omit leap days in years divisible by 100 but not divisible by 400.
This was done to keep the date Easter after the Spring Equinox and near the Jewish Feasts of Passover, Unleaven Bread and First Fruits. Protestant Europe did not adopt theGregorian reform till the 1700s.
England and its colonies waited till 1752, but by that time the calendar trailed the seasons by 11 days.
When America finally adjusted its calendar and the day after September 2 became September 14, there were reports of riots.

Obama's "defeat train" picking up speed as it heads toward a cliff

 Since Friday Barack Obama's chances of reelection have dimmed considerably.

 The recent hits "Hope and Change Part II" has taken are not small and will cause even "true believers" to take heed.

Friday Democracy Corps told Obama and his advisors they should stop telling people the economy is either getting better or has actually fully recovered as some wild eyed liars have been saying. In very strong language Stan Greenberg the DC pollster said even the weakest Republican message on the economy gets a markedly better response from voters than any variation of Obama's "America is back" theme. 

  Yesterday a little reported Pew research survey revealed that Catholic voters are running away from Obama in large numbers. It noted that while Catholics in general had supported Democrats 53/37 in 2008 that advantage is now down to just 48/43, but more telling is that church going Catholics who favored John McCain 50/49 ... Dying to be Green

Some 8,000 people die in the UK every year due to what is being called "Fuel Poverty", or more simply when it costs too much to heat your home. Naturally the left is already on the case, staging "Die-Ins" outside energy companies and demanding that carbon credits be used to make homes "super-energy efficient".

 
Left out of the equation is that rising fuel prices can in no small part be attributed to the environmental mania which is at the heart of the movement. It isn't oil and gas companies that are killing the elderly with high fuel prices, it's carbon mania and environmentalism. Energy companies are not run by saints, but they don't have an interest in making oil and gas prices out of reach of ordinary people. It's hard to sell home heat to the dead or the destitute. On the other hand environmentalists do indeed have that agenda.

When Obama's energy secretary communicates that he has no interest in lowering the price of gasoline, instead focusing on energy efficiency and clean energy, he's following the same inhumane line which has made it so expensive to drive a car or heat a home in Europe.

Talk of using carbon credits for "super-energy efficiency" is an admission that a movement using dead seniors as a prop is actually pushing to make energy use as expensive as possible and to reduce it as much as possible. The "Die In" crowd isn't for lowering energy prices, it's for adding more taxes that will benefit energy efficiency and clean energy experts.

Say what you will about energy companies but their business plan generally involves getting a product to market. The energy plan on the government side is to make energy more expensive and keep as much of it off the market as possible. The costs of their policies are not just a talking point, they are a grim reality.

The family that has to choose between feeding their children or being able to afford to drive to work or heat their home is not a talking point, they are the new Kulaks, the victims of ideological government policy that has no problem with watching people die so long as it gets its way.

Goodbye, Andrew

Conservatives are mourning the unexpected passing of journalist Andrew Breitbart. I had the pleasure of speaking at a pro-life event with Andrew at CPAC. For many, Breitbart was a hero for the uncompromising way in which he fought back against the left-wing bias of the liberal media establishment. And, of course, Breitbart famously brought down Rep. Anthony Weiner, who repeatedly lied about his Twitter "malfunction."

According to his website, biggovernment.com, Breitbart recently published a new conclusion to his latest book, Righteous Indignation, which summed up his life well:

"I love my job. I love fighting for what I believe in. I love having fun while doing it. I love reporting stories that the Complex refuses to report. I love fighting back, I love finding allies, and -- famously -- I enjoy making enemies."


He leaves a wife and four children. Please remember his family in your prayers.


Mitt, Call Your Office

The last thing I want to do is cause trouble for any of the possible GOP presidential nominees. As I have said before, I will support any of them in the general election. Governor Mitt Romney has new momentum now, but yesterday we got another reminder of why he is not connecting with many conservatives.

Fresh off his Michigan win, the governor was asked by an Ohio reporter whether he supported the Blunt-Rubio bill, which would reinforce the long-standing conscience exemptions for faith-based institutions that the Obama Administration has repeatedly attacked. (Earlier today Harry Reid's Senate killed the Blunt-Rubio bill by a 51-to-48 vote. Every Republican but one voted the right way, while 50 out of 53 Democrats voted against religious liberty.)

The reporter noted that Santorum was for the bill, and asked Romney whether he had taken a position. Governor Romney replied, "I'm not for the bill," and then proceeded to attack Santorum, insinuating that Santorum wanted to ban contraception. I have no doubt that the reporter was trying to tempt Romney into attacking Santorum. Sadly, Romney fell for it. In my view, it is always wrong to use Democrat talking points to attack a fellow conservative.

Banning contraception is not what the Blunt-Rubio bill is about. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) is at the top of every list of potential vice presidential nominees. Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) has endorsed Romney. This legislation is a top priority for virtually every pro-family, pro-life organization in Washington.

So why was Romney's first instinct to assume that there is something wrong with a bill drafted by one of his supporters and one of our brightest rising stars? Why did he go after Santorum rather than Obama? Even if the reporter phrased the question poorly, all Romney had to say was, "I need more information before commenting on that" or "I suspect you've got the facts wrong." Give conservatives the benefit of the doubt, Governor, and PLEASE go after Obama!

When Mitt Romney speaks from a prepared text, his speeches are reassuring. But when he's unscripted, he often leaves conservatives confused. A Santorum spokesman responded, saying, "You can take Mitt out of Massachusetts, but you can't take Massachusetts out of Mitt." And that is what has so many conservatives worried.

In short order, the governor's campaign issued a statement saying he misunderstood the question and does in fact support the bill. I'm glad to hear it. But the candidates should know by now that the media will try to trip them up. It is only going to get worse as we get closer to Election Day.

Governor, call your office. You will need the conservative base if you are going to replace Barack Obama.


The Cost Of ObamaCare

As we are learning every day, ObamaCare is going to cost us more than just trillions in new taxes and entitlement spending. It is costing us our freedom. And as Catholic leaders have been warning, there is a huge cost to religious liberty.

What is the potential cost to the Catholic Church and other religious institutions that refuse Obama's latest mandate to pay for abortion-inducing drugs? According to Politico, "The IRS is empowered to levy a tax penalty on noncompliant religious employers of $100 per day for each employee in their health plan."

That means a Catholic charity or hospital with 100 employees could be slapped with a $3.65 million fine every year. That would be the cost for the Church and other religious groups if they choose to exercise the freedom they have always enjoyed in this country. That is not freedom. It is extortion.


Beware The "American Spring"

We've been warning that this campaign is going to be brutal, and it will be. It might seem like the Occupy Wall Street movement died out in the winter, but it is not gone. It is hibernating. There are reports that it will reemerge in what is being called "The American Spring," modeled after the so-called "Arab Spring."

Tuesday night, several banks and a Starbucks in Portland, Oregon, were attacked by radicals and anarchists who sympathize with the Occupy movement. Emboldened by the timid response to the Occupiers, these thugs are growing more brazen. They emailed police shortly after each act of vandalism to brag about it. They wrote in one message, "Wherever capital chooses for its bunker, we will be there to attack it in the night."

Meanwhile, another "occupier" is in the hospital, recovering from severe burns he received after torching a historic town hall in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado. His friends say they are "shocked." But one conceded, "There was a group that decided that the things they wanted to do to change the world would be illegal instead of working within the system."

Shocked? I'm not. Even liberal pollsters warned us that many in the Occupy movement were prone to violence, and the movement has an extensive rap sheet.


Obama's Apology Failed

Barack Obama told ABC News yesterday that his apology to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the burning of Korans on Bagram Air Force Base "calmed things down." No it didn't.

Two more U.S. soldiers were assassinated today when they were attacked by a member of the Afghan army and a teacher. A third person is believed to be in custody. USA Today reports, "Thursday's killings raised to six the number of Americans killed in less than two weeks... President Obama and other U.S. officials apologized and said the burning was an accident, but that has failed to quell the anger."

In fact, groveling to the jihadists always inspires more violence, not less. Obama's weakness is putting our soldiers at risk.

Morning Bell: Two Centuries of Religious Freedom Rolled Back

As we all know, President Obama's health care law will mandate that religious hospitals, charities, and schools abandon the tenets of their faiths and provide their employees insurance coverage of abortion-inducing drugs, contraception and sterilization. This anti-conscience mandate is but the latest assault on liberty Obamacare has ushered in. Its shock waves are reverberating across the country, waking Americans to the fact that our first freedom - religious liberty - will be the first to fall now that the federal government has unfettered control over the country's health care system.

 

Some in Congress are taking action to combat Obamacare's onslaught. Today, the Senate will consider an amendment introduced by Senator Roy Blunt (R-Missouri) and co-sponsored by Marco Rubio (R-Florida) that would override Obamacare's anti-conscience mandate, allowing religious institutions to keep their faith and provide health care coverage for their employees. So important is this amendment that The Heritage Foundation's sister organization, Heritage Action for America, has decided to "key vote" the measure, meaning that it has identified the vote as a seminal one.

March 1, 2012     Blunt the Attacks on Religious Liberty: Repeal Obamacare

Congress recognizes more each day that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, known widely as the Obamacare statute, interferes unconstitutionally with the liberty of Americans.

From the Obamacare individual mandate to buy health insurance that awaits the action of the Supreme Court, to the Obamacare mandate that many religious hospitals, charities, and schools abandon the tenets of their faiths and include in their group health insurance for employees coverage of abortion-inducing drugs, contraception, and sterilization, Obamacare assaults the Constitution and American freedom.

Fortunately, Members of Congress and the American people are waking up to the need to repeal the Obamacare statute and move instead to market-based, patient-centered health care. Action in Congress this week to defend religious liberty continues to highlight the need to repeal the Obamacare statute.

The Obama Administration continues to trample on religious liberty by applying the Obamacare statute to mandate that many religious institutions' group health insurance for employees cover abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives, and sterilization. The Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Treasury, and Labor published on February 15, 2012 final regulations that compel many religious hospitals, charities and schools to abandon the tenets of their faiths and comply with that mandate beginning April 16, 2012, or pay fines for maintaining their religious faiths. The final regulations did not include any changes to respect religious liberty that President Obama had led people to expect.

Although Secretary of HHS Kathleen Sebelius has said that, for one year, she will simply not perform her duty to enforce the final regulations, her decision not to enforce the regulations temporarily as a matter of grace does not eliminate the mandate's interference with religious liberty. Indeed, her pronouncements reflect a failure to understand that religious liberty in America is an unalienable right with which our Creator has endowed us and a right that our Constitution's First Amendment protects. Our religious liberty does not arise from the discretion of the Federal Government to do Americans a "favor" and tolerate their religions. Because President Barack Obama and his agents continue to attack the constitutionally-guaranteed right of these religious institutions to free exercise of religion, Members of Congress are stepping forward to protect the Constitution.

Senator Roy Blunt (R-Missouri) has fought for religious liberty against the Obamacare assault. He plans to offer this week Senate Amendment No. 1520 to S. 1813, the highway authorization bill, to protect the right to religious liberty against the Obamacare mandate. 

The Blunt Amendment notes that, until the enactment of the Obamacare statute in 2010, "the Federal Government has not sought to impose specific coverage or care requirements that infringe on the rights of conscience..." The Blunt Amendment would override the Obamacare mandate that religious institutions provide coverage for abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives, and sterilization when it is contrary to their faiths, allowing them to keep their faiths and provide health care coverage for their employees.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) has announced his intention to keep the Senate from voting on the Blunt Amendment by making a motion to "table" - that is, to refuse to consider - the Blunt Amendment.  Senator Reid said he considered the Blunt Amendment that protects religious liberty to be a "distracting proposal." Senator Reid may treat legislation to protect religious liberty as a "distraction," but hundreds of millions of Americans hold their right to free exercise of religion to be a precious freedom.

President Obama and Senator Reid can man the ramparts of Castle Obamacare against the people for only so long. The American people want their liberty and they shall have it. The Obamacare statute must go.

Blunt the Attacks on Religious Liberty: Repeal Obamacare

Congress recognizes more each day that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, known widely as the Obamacare statute, interferes unconstitutionally with the liberty of Americans.  From the Obamacare individual mandate to buy health insurance that awaits the action of the Supreme Court, to the Obamacare mandate that many religious hospitals, charities, and schools abandon the tenets of their faiths and include in their group health insurance for employees coverage of abortion-inducing drugs, contraception, and sterilization, Obamacare assaults the Constitution and American freedom.

Fortunately, Members of Congress and the American people are waking up to the need to repeal the Obamacare statute and move instead to market-based, patient-centered health care.  Action in Congress this week to defend religious liberty continues to highlight the need to repeal the Obamacare statute.

The Obama Administration continues to trample on religious liberty by applying the Obamacare statute to mandate that many religious institutions' group health insurance for employees cover abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives, and sterilization.  The Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Treasury, and Labor published on February 15, 2012 final regulations that compel many religious hospitals, charities, and schools to abandon the tenets of their faiths and comply with that mandate beginning April 16, 2012, or pay fines for maintaining their religious faiths.  The final regulations did not include any changes to respect religious liberty that President Obama had led people to expect.

For more than three years, President Obama has refused to tackle one of the root causes of our struggling economy: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Not only are these two responsible for the bulk of our housing crisis, they have been bailed out to the tune of more than $116 billion in your tax dollars.

The legislation already exists. Last year, Congressman Jeb Hensarling introduced H.R.1182, the Bailout Elimination and Taxpayer Protection Act. You don't have to be a doctrinaire conservative to realize this. The Economist, the London-based news weekly - and a supporter of President Obama's candidacy in 2008 - highlights the problem in its latest cover story, "Overregulated America." They note the irony: "The home of laissez-faire is being suffocated by excessive and badly written regulation."

Uncommon Knowledge with Andrew Breitbart

I got to know Andrew Breitbart five years ago on a whirlwind tour of Israel during which we became friends. Andrew was one of a kind, a big lovable bear of a man with the heart and soul of a warrior. His death leaves me distraught. It leaves the conservative movement, in which Andrew exerted his leadership with a convert's zeal and a Falstaffian wit, bereft of an irreplaceable presence.

Last year we posted Andrew's appearance with Peter Robinson on Uncommon Knowledge (transcript here). What follows below is the introduction with which we prefaced the video together with the video of Andrew doing his thing, live and unforgettable.

Our friend Andrew Breitbart is the consequential fellow who stepped out from behind his work for the Drudge Report and the Huffington Post to establish his own online empire under the rubric Big: Big Government, Big Hollywood, Big Journalism, and Big Peace. He is smart, he is funny, he has the soul of a warrior, and he has quickly made himself a pillar of the conservative movement. He is therefore a target of the mainstream media. They are out to destroy him, and Andrew heartily reciprocates. It's Andrew versus Goliath.

Andrew and his team doggedly pursued the story behind the allegations of Reps. Andre Carson, John Lewis. Emanuel Cleaver and James Clyburn that Tea Party protesters abused black congressmen with racial epithets while demonstrating against Obamacare on Capitol Hill on March 20, 2010. The story was reported as fact by news organizations including Fox News and McClatchy News, but Breitbart called baloney and exposed it as a concoction of the congressmen who peddled it.

One can say this with something approaching metaphysical certainty because of the utter lack of evidence supporting it under circumstances where there would have been such evidence had it happened as alleged. The key to the case was Breitbart's offer of a $100,000 reward to anyone producing video of the epithets being shouted. There were no takers because it didn't happen.

One can reasonably conclude that the congressmen's story was a fabrication intended to defame the Tea Party movement and distract attention from the resistance to Obamacare. Not a single video corroborated it although many videos were shot that day, and despite Breitbart's offer of a $100,000 reward to anyone producing a video that corroborated it. No independent journalist or other eyewitness stepped forward to vouch for the congressmen's story.

Andrew's exposure of the story as a fraud was an incredible piece of journalism all by itself. He deserved a Pulitzer Prize for it. I propose that Andrew's next Big site be Big $100k.

My wife called this morning to relay the terrible news that Andrew Breitbart has died at age 43. Andrew's death is a catastrophe for his young family, and a grave loss for the conservative movement. Andrew was one of perhaps three or four conservatives who could truly be described as irreplaceable.

Andrew will be remembered for his astonishing energy and his utter fearlessness. His creative approach to media and to activism in general made him a unique contributor to the conservative movement. Andrew was also very funny. I will never forget how, at CPAC last year, my then-fourteen year old daughter nearly fell off her chair with laughter as Andrew mimed how, on rollerblades, he took over a group of protesting leftists and diverted them to an Applebee's restaurant.

Andrew was a nice guy with a big heart. We know many of the people who have worked for and with him, and he seemingly was respected and beloved by all. A movie about Andrew called, I believe, "Hating Breitbart," will be coming out in a few months. It documents a tumultuous year in Andrew's life; from the scenes I have seen, it will be fascinating. His untimely death will put those events in a different and sadder light.

I didn't know Andrew well, but considered him a friend. Working with Andrew was always fun; his enthusiasm was infectious and he brought more energy to everything he did than a normal human being would consider possible. He was a warrior in the cause of freedom. Andrew cannot be replaced, but he will long serve as an inspiration to his fellow conservatives. We extend our deepest sympathy to his widow and his four children. Andrew Breitbart, RIP.

STEVE adds: News of Andrew's passing spread quickly even down here in the internet-deprived Hillsdale College cruise in the South Atlantic.  Andrew had been a speaker on the Hillsdale cruise in previous years.  I didn't know him well, but had spent some time with him now and then over the last few years.  He was mildly disdainful of intellectuals like me, not because he was anti-intellectual in the least, but because he was in a hurry.  My approach took too long.*  He preferred the sharp and direct hand-to-hand combat with the Left, and needless to say his media genius will be irreplaceable.  His various "Big" sites were rapidly making him into the Rupert Murdoch of Internet news.

* One of our times together was at the Claremont Institute's Lincoln Fellows program a few summers back, where he challenged us political philosophy types to work harder to translate our thought into action, or help him to do so.  That's what he'd want us to do more than ever now that he's gone.

 

The Church against Obamacare, cont'd

Whatever happened to baby pain? I mean, has the the Obama administration's ludicrous "accommodation" of the Church's opposition to the compelled provision of free contraception, sterilization and abortifacients resolved the serious constitutional affront involved? Or has it thrown one more into the mix? Somehow the mainstream media have transformed the discussion into something else entirely.

By the way, has anyone actually seen a copy of the regulation enacting the "accommodation" and requiring the insurers of Catholic institutions to provide free goodies? The administration appears to be charting a new path in administrative law. I'd love to take a look at the revised regulation, wherever it is.

We're going to stay focused on the issue before the country and avoid the misdirection cooked up by the mainstream media. IBD has devoted a good editorial to the powerful letter promulgated by Chicago's Francis Cardinal George. Here is the IBD editorial:

The ex-head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops compares the administration take on freedom of worship to the Soviet Union's and says its contraceptive mandate will force church hospitals to close.

On the first Sunday of Lent, Chicago's Francis Cardinal George issued his version of the letter issued by the USCCB he recently led.

It shredded assurances by the administration that things could be worked out so that religious freedom would not be impaired and painted a bleak future that just might be the administration's intent.

Going a bit further than his peers, Cardinal George essentially rejected the administration position that you can have freedom of conscience as long as you don't act on it and that Catholics can run hospitals believing what they want as long as they don't act on those beliefs.

Cardinal George responded that what Catholics and others do is what they believe and the two cannot be separated.

"Freedom of worship was guaranteed in the constitution of the former Soviet Union," Cardinal George wrote in a column in the Catholic New World. "You could go to church, if you could find one. The church, however, could do nothing except conduct religious rites in places of worship - no schools, religious publications, health care institutions, organized charity, ministry for justice and works of mercy that flow naturally from a living faith. We fought a long Cold War to defeat that vision of society."

Indeed we did. It was fought to protect the First Amendment and the free exercise of religion in all its aspects.

The oft-mentioned "separation of church and state," a phrase that appears in an 1802 letter by Thomas Jefferson but nowhere in the U.S. Constitution, was meant to imply protection of churches from the state as much as the other way around. "The state is making itself into a church" with this mandate, Cardinal George said.

Under the mandates, he wrote, Catholic hospitals and other institutions will face a choice of selling themselves to non-Catholic groups, paying "exorbitant annual fines" until going bankrupt, breaking with the local bishops and their oversight, or simply closing down.

He noted that in the Archdiocesan directory is a list of Catholic social institutions and hospitals.

"Two Lents from now, unless something changes, that page will be blank," he wrote.

Catholics operate more than 7,000 schools educating children of all faiths, backgrounds and economic conditions. One in six patients in the U.S. is in a Catholic hospital. Catholic charities provide needed services to the hungry, homeless and poor. Faith-based institutions are more efficient and more in touch with their communities.

Their loss would be a national tragedy, but not a surprise, since a major focus of this administration is to aggrandize as much power unto itself and to make as many people as possible dependent on government.

Putting competing faith-based institutions out of business would further the goal of an all-powerful nanny state.

The Founding Fathers knew that freedom of religion was a bedrock of democracy and all other freedoms.

That is why they put it in the First Amendment of a Constitution that mentions freedom of religion, but not health care. This country was founded by those escaping government interference in and persecution of their religion and the way they practice their faith.

The Soviet Union that Cardinal George warned our government was copying in its attack on religious freedom was brought down by a Polish church led by Pope John Paul II who, along with President Ronald Reagan, believed that religious conscience and freedom go hand in hand.

While some believe health care is a right guaranteed by the state, some still believe and fight for those inalienable rights that our Declaration of Independence says we were endowed with by our Creator.

Nationalized health care is not one of them.

Behind the Eisen curtain

We recently highlighted former NEH Chairman Bruce Cole's devastating critique of the proposed Eisenhower Memorial. Now the National Civic Art Society invites you to examine shocking photos of mockups of the giant industrial steel "tapestries" planned for the Eisenhower Memorial. the point out that the main "tapestry" - a veritable "Eisen Curtain" - is so large it will dwarf the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles. The photos are posted here. Please check them out.

The source of the photos is the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. The photos depict mockups displayed to the CFA in August 2011. These photos have apparently not previously been seen by the public or media. Why might that be? Opponents of the Gehry design for the memorial hold that the photos prove the screens to be a rat's nest of tangled steel, making them a maintenance nightmare.

In renderings of the design, memorial designer Frank Gehry and the Eisenhower Memorial Commission depict the "tapestries" as mere gauzy photographs. Is it the maintenance nightmare that supporters of the memorial are keeping under wraps, or the ugliness of the "tapestry"?

Compare the mesh screen "tapestry" with which Gehry cloaked the parking garage "for the now-mercifully-demolished Santa Monica Place shopping mall." Erik Evans, president of the Los Angeles chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, observes: "Beside its intrinsic ugliness, over time it acquired a sad patina of rust as the coating of the chain link corroded in the ocean air."

The intrinsic ugliness of the tapestries depicted in the photos seems to me their leading attribute, evoking the worst nightmares of the twentieth century. But it is also hard to see how the memorial as designed would wear well over time. Rouging never sleeps.

In related news, Reps. Dan Lungren and Aaron Schock have called for rejection of the proposed design of the Eisenhower Memorial. Read their letter here. Now hear this: "As students of this great individual, and as concerned members of Congress trying to be faithful stewards of our hallowed National Mall, we respectfully ask members of the Commission to reopen discussion on the design of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial and gain broad support of the public and the Eisenhower family before moving ahead with the project."

 

Santorum, Obama and CNN Team Up

CNN is currently headlining: "Ticker: Romney's Big Stumble." Wow. What was the big stumble? CNN explains:

Mitt Romney's campaign scrambled to clean up another unforced error by their candidate...

Another! Got that?

...Wednesday after he came out against a controversial amendment pushed by Senate Republicans that would allow employers to opt out of health care coverage they disagree with on moral grounds.

Romney's statement, which came in an afternoon interview with Ohio News Network, quickly reverberated around the Internet and prompted Romney's campaign to clarify that the opposite was true, and that the former Massachusetts governor, in fact, supports the legislation.

In the sit down interview with Ohio's ONN, Romney was asked whether he supported the Blunt measure.

"The issue of birth control, contraception, Blunt-Rubio is being debated, I believe, later this week. It deals with banning or allowing employers to ban providing female contraception," asked the reporter, Jim Heath. "Have you taken a position on it? He (Santorum) said he was for that, we'll talk about personhood in a second; but he's for that, have you taken a position?"

Romney responded: "I'm not for the bill, but look, the idea of presidential candidates getting into questions about contraception within a relationship between a man and a women, husband and wife, I'm not going there."

Not only did the Santorum campaign immediately send out an email blast to the effect that Romney opposes the Blunt bill, the Obama campaign also accused him of "flip-flopping." This is beyond stupid. The reporter ignorantly mis-described the Blunt-Rubio bill. It does not "ban" anything. Romney responded to the reporter's description rather than the bill's name.

But the idea that Romney agrees with the Obama administration's First Amendment violation is absurd. Far from agreeing with it, he wrote an op-ed in the Washington Examiner attacking the HHS rule nearly four weeks ago:

On January 20, 2012, the Obama administration affirmed a rule that would force Roman Catholic hospitals, charities, and universities to purchase health insurance for their employees that includes coverage for contraception, abortifacients, and sterilization, in violation of their religious principles. This is wrong.

My own view is clear. I stand with the Catholic Bishops and all religious organizations in their strenuous objection to this liberty- and conscience-stifling regulation. I am committed to overturning Obamacare root and branch. If I am elected President, on day one of my administration I will issue an executive order directing my Secretary of Health and Human Services to issue a waiver from its requirements to all 50 states. And on day one I will eliminate the Obama administration rule that compels religious institutions to violate the tenets of their own faith. Such rules don?t belong in the America that I believe in.

Romney couldn't be clearer on this issue. Any time you see Rick Santorum and Barack Obama agreeing on something, with CNN cheering them on, you know you want to get on the other side as quickly as possible.
