A U.S. soldier wields his assault rifle as another soldier handles a shotgun at the gate of Bagram air base during a protest against Quran desecration, Tuesday.
MSNBC: KABUL - Afghanistan wants NATO to put on public trial those who burned copies of the Quran at a NATO base, President Hamid Karzai's office said Thursday, after a third day of bloody protests over the incident. It said NATO had agreed to a trial, but that could not be immediately confirmed. Karzai had earlier accused a U.S. officer of "ignorantly" burning copies of the Quran, in an incident that has deepened anti-Western sentiment in a country NATO is trying to stabilize before foreign combat troops leave by the end of 2014. Demonstrations have drawn thousands of angry Afghans to the streets, chanting "Death to America!" amid violence that has killed 11 people including two U.S. service personnel. "NATO officials, in response to a request for the trial and punishment of the perpetrators ... promised this crime will brought to court as soon as possible," Karzai's office said in a statement. Read more: President Barack Obama sent a letter to Karzai apologizing for the burning of the Qurans, after Afghan laborers found charred copies while collecting rubbish at the sprawling Bagram air base. Obama told Karzai the incident was not intentional. Karzai said an American officer had acted "out of ignorance and with poor understanding" of the Quran's importance, a presidential statement said. The Taliban urged Afghan security forces to "turn their guns on the foreign infidel invaders," it said on its site shahamat-english.com.

Nigerian Churchgoers Club Would-Be Suicide Bomber to Death After His Car Bomb Fails to Kill Him
The Blaze | by Christopher Santarelli | Posted on February 26, 2012 at 10:35pm
Angry churchgoers at the headquarters of the Church Of Christ In Nations (COCIN) in Nigeria clubbed to death a would-be suicide bomber after his car bomb failed to kill him. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bomber and one other, who both wore army camouflage, drove into the Church and beat the security before hitting the building:

The bad news is last month some well intentioned political activist announced a cut-off date for signing up co-sponsors for Rep. Rose Marie Swanger's American Law's for American Courts (HB 2029) in an effort to inject some urgency into the effort.
What it resulted in was an interruption of the campaign to encourage those Representatives not yet signed on as co-sponsors to join with those Legislators who have already recognized the death by smothering threat to our Constitution.
The good news is there is no cut-off date for adding co-sponsors and we are once again asking your readers to contact their representatives and ask they join the battle.
There are only three Representatives from Bucks who are co-sponsors, Representatives Clymer, Petri and Quinn and we thank them for showing their colors.
But that leaves seven more Representatives who appear to be still standing on the sidelines as the battle for our existence as a free people is joined.
Lame rhetoric? I'm afraid not. If you do not understand the threat we face from 'peaceful' opportunists like CAIR, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bucksafa11info/messages or contact me at bucksafa11@yahoo.com to schedule an Open the Koran presentation for you and your friends.
If you're ready to help, visit www.actforamerica.org and sign on as a chapter leader. It's free and the people there are friendly and helpful. Your help is needed. Every township, every neighborhood needs an Act! for America chapter leader.
But before you do anything, if your Pennsylvania Representative has not yet ssigned on as co-sponsor, urge her/him to do so and ask what is it that prevents him/her from doing so.
Help Pennsylvania be counted among those States that have shown the courage to face off with the enemies who have plainly stated their aim is to destroy our Nation. Our laws have worked just fine since colonial times. What is needed are politicians who respect them. And you know whose job it is to remind them of that.
Thanks,
John Ryan

CAIR's Fight Against Pennsylvania Foreign Law Bill
by David J. Rusin FrontPage Magazine February 13, 2012
http://www.islamist-watch.org/9192/cair-fight-against-pennsylvania-foreign-law-bill
Resistance to a new bill aimed at limiting foreign law in Pennsylvania courts serves as a case study of how Islamists and their allies operate: peddling falsehoods about Shari'a, painting Muslims as victims, and denying that anyone seeks to institutionalize aspects of Islamic law - even as they vigorously promote that very agenda. With similar legislation being debated across the U.S., understanding their tactics is critical.
At issue in Pennsylvania is House Bill (HB) 2029, which stipulates that "a tribunal shall not consider a foreign legal code or system which does not grant ... the same fundamental liberties, rights and privileges" as guaranteed by the federal and state constitutions. Introduced in November, it follows the American Laws for American Courts (ALAC) model and makes no mention of Shari'a. A preliminary memo sent to legislators last June in the name of Rep. RoseMarie Swanger, HB 2029's chief sponsor, does highlight Islamic law, but she later said that it had been circulated accidentally. Regardless, concerns about Shari'a are warranted due to its many provisions that conflict with the standards of American jurisprudence. For example, it disadvantages women in terms of inheritance, divorce, child custody, and other areas of family law. Shari'a already has shaped numerous cases nationwide, including in Pennsylvania, where one state court decided how assets should be distributed according to Islam.
Pushback against HB 2029 has been led by the Philadelphia office of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-PA) and was punctuated by an interfaith press conference (video here) at CAIR-PA headquarters on December 14. The overall campaign reflects CAIR's usual recipe of distortion, victimology, and contradiction between words and deeds.
Attacks on bills like HB 2029 begin by sowing confusion about Shari'a. Because Islamic law encompasses virtually every facet of life - governing personal activities such as eating and worship, but also forming an oppressive social and legal structure - suit-and-tie Islamists work to emphasize its unthreatening pieces whenever possible. CAIR-PA executive director Moein Khawaja's suggestion that Shari'a should worry Pennsylvanians no more than halal gyros is a fine example of this technique.

March 23rd, 2012, marks an important and unfortunate anniversary. It will have been exactly two years since President Obama forced his unpopular health care takeover onto the American people. Americans for Prosperity has educated the public about the dangers of government interference in the health care market for the past several years, and now the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments and make a ruling on that very issue. As you are most likely aware, the U.S. Supreme Court will be considering the constitutionality of several elements of the President's health care bill. This may be our best chance to overturn this offense against our health care freedoms. That's why Americans for Prosperity will be hosting a Hands Off My Health Care rally for free-market grassroots activists from across the country at the Supreme Court on March 27th. Help Principled Candidates Win
Campaign Training Seminar
March 16-17, 2012 ~ Harrisburg, PA
Voters today - perhaps more than at any time in recent history - are yearning for principled candidates committed to standing strong for the timeless values upon which our country was founded and standing stronger against the politics-as-usual establishment working to undermine those values.
The Winning Campaigns Training Seminar shows principled candidates, campaign staff, and grassroots activists how to run winning campaigns without compromising their values - with a special emphasis placed on running and winning primaries. You'll learn:
- Secrets campaign pros use to develop winning strategies.
- How to raise all the money you need to win even if you've never raised money before.
- Keys to persuading voters in-person, through the mail, over the phone, and online.
Who should attend? Current & future candidates, campaign staff and consultants, campaign volunteers, grassroots citizen activists.
What's the cost? Nothing, it's free, but you must register in advance. A group of donors concerned about the political leadership in our state have generously underwritten the cost of the seminar.
For more information or to Pre-Register now, contact Dan Bartkowiak by calling 717-545-0600 or email dbart@pafamily.org. |

To Everyone Who Helped with Verify the Recall - Thank You!
Together We Conducted An Independent, Citizen-Led Audit of EPIC Scale
Proving That We the PeopleWill Stand in the Gap of Government to Uphold Election Integrity
Here's What You Accomplished IN 22 DAYS:
- 14,000+ volunteers joined in from 49 states
- 3.5 MILLION records were entered
- 192.2 GB total bandwidth
- 23,529,926 total requests
- 481,002 were attempted threats to the site
We proved that the unions had nowhere near the 1,000,000 signatures they touted - and that of the actual signatures turned in, at least 25% and possibly up to 40%, had critical errors.
Did the unions legitimately compile the 520,000 signatures necessary to trigger a recall election? We'll let the public decide.
Our goal was neither to support or negate the outcome - our goal was to uphold the integrity of the process.
Reports will be posted online on Monday, February 27th. You can check them out here.

But what IS nullification? How does it happen and work? Since September 2010, the Tenth Amendment Center has been hosting a national tour to educate and activate people on this topic. People are learning the constitutional basis, when it's been used in history, and how it is happening around the country and how YOU can stop DC right in your own state.

The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress
Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:
- Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
- Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
- Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care
The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

Lou Flanagan, House Bill 934: Voter ID
"My state Rep. Warren Kampf responded to my question about where the Voter ID bill stands in Harrisburg. His response appears at end of this emaiI. It seems clear that unless we apply pressure to the state senate government committee, this bill will go nowhere. My questions for them are: Where do you stand on the bill? What are you doing to move it out of committee? If you oppose it, tell me why. Who on the committee is against it, and why? Louis: Thank you for the email regarding Voter ID (House Bill 934). The House passed Voted ID on June 23rd. I voted for this bill if you will remember. It is now the responsibility of the Senate to take action to continue to move HB 934 forward. I would advise you to contact the Senators who comprise the Senate State Government Committee, those in Senate leadership positions and your local Senator to let them know of your desire to move this forward. Also you may ask for an accounting of why this has been held up and not considered. Please let me know if I can help with other state-related matters. Voter Cheating
You know, comrades," says Stalin, "that I think in regard to this: I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this - who will count the votes, and how. (Boris Bazhanov's Memoirs of Stalin's Former Secretary,1992, only available in Russian. Russia's Vladimir Putin is accused of voter fraud and failure to solve problems with health care availability, immigration control, and unsustainable pensions. Sound familiar? Absolutely. Will he lie? Absolutely. But unlike Obama's ACORN, he will probably admit it.
Background
There are several lines of independent evidence for cheating in the 2012 election:
a) 12/30/11, Voter ID: PA House Bill 934
Eric Holder has ordered his staff not to meddle with cases of voter fraud that involve minorities (J. Christian Adams has written widely about such cases), Salina Zito (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review) predicted that PA in November '12 will go according to the Philadelphia suburbs, ACORN has both a record for voter scams and operates new sites in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, our State Attorney General is stepping aside, and there is little public information about Mayor Nutter's views on this matter. Meanwhile, there is an early February deadline from our Governor as Republicans in the PA legislature attempt to define a list of acceptable IDs and Democrats cry that minorities and old people can't handle this demand. I smell more fraud from a bunch- ACORN - already known nationally for fraud and Corbett's February deadline invites some deliberate lapse by the D's...And intrusion by Eric Holder would stall our ID program until after ACORN has done their job for BO ...
b) Jeffrey Kuhner, Washington Times: BO & Voter ID
"...South Carolina's legislation provides for free ID cards to be given to anyone who needs it. Not one person - white, black or brown - is discriminated against or discouraged from casting a vote at the ballot box. Moreover, the Supreme Court already has ruled on the issue - upholding state voter ID laws. In the 2008 Crawford v. Marion County Election Board decision, the high court held that an Indiana law mandating photo identification at the voting booth was indeed constitutional. If it is good enough for the Supreme Court and the overwhelming majority of the states, then it should be for Mr. Holder as well. "It isn't. And the reason is simple: The administration is trying to whip up minority frenzy, propagating the myth of widespread ballot suppression..."
c) Daryl Metcalf, Morning Call: Electoral Integrity (June 18, 2011)
Metcalf is a Republican from Butler County (north of Pittsburgh) "Pennsylvania has a long and ongoing history of documented voter fraud - pre-dating even the frequently forged signature of Mickey Mouse to at least the election of 1918. "Of course, no statewide analysis of voter fraud would be complete without briefly documenting the deeply rooted influence of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.
d) Christopher Freind, PA Water Cooler: No ID, No Vote,... Comprende? (June 21, 2011)
"I am not wealthy, but have recently acquired twenty two domiciles throughout Philadelphia. My real estate prowess has afforded me a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our citizens. "I can vote twenty-two times. "You see, I have staked out prime locations, from a cardboard box under the Walt Whitman Bridge to a culvert on Cobbs Creek Parkway to a burnt out shell at 7th and Diamond. Yes, technically, habitating at these locations makes me 'homeless,' but I much prefer the term 'voter-enfranchised.' When you have such a love of democracy, how can anyone have a problem with people who want to vote multiple times, especially the homeless? (Although, in fairness, dead people should only be able to vote once). http://pawatercooler.com/v3/?tag=philadelphia-voter-fraud
e) 11/7/2011, PA ACORN Lives
"Pennsylvania. ACORN PA has become Pennsylvania Communities Organizing for Change (PCOC) and Pennsylvania Neighborhoods for Social Justice (PNSJ).Both were incorporated on January 8, 2010. On July 26, 2010, PCOC filed for another name - Action United - and the organizations now operate under this name. Current board members and staff of these organizations with former ACORN affiliations include: * Lucille Prater Holliday, chair (ACORN member and Democratic state house candidate) * Pat Worrell, co-chair (Chester County, PA ACORN chairman) * Rosa Chacon, secretary/treasurer (ACORN leader in Harrisburg, PA, profiled in ACORN's 2005 annual report) * Fabrico Rodriguez, board member (executive director of Philadelphia Jobs with Justice) * Craig Robbins, executive director (ACORN regional director in Philadelphia, PA) * Maryellen Deckard, southwest regional director (head organizer for ACORN PA) * Jennifer England, communications director (Pittsburg ACORN spokesperson) Action United is located at 846 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130 and 5907 Penn Avenue, Pittsburg(h), PA 15206. The Action United website is www.actionunited.org. http://www.judicialwatch.org/files/documents/2011/acornspecialreport08222011.pdf There is even a Secretary of State project in which leftist groups attempt to bias state elections so that "liberal" Secretaries of State are elected. http://truethevote.org/news/does-your-vote-really-count; http://truethevote.org/news/what-is-the-secretary-of-state-project. There must be some benefit to Republicans if they ignore voter fraud. For example, my acquaintance publishes lists of Republicans who take contributions from unions and refusing to vote against union interests. And conservative Lowman Henry has spoken about the legislative impasse, particularly in the State Senate, produced by about twenty-five who get their money from organized labor. Thus, Nicole Marrone's conclusion is still valid as is Christopher Freind's: "The city of Philadelphia is known for many things: The Liberty Bell, cheesesteaks, water ice, and Santa Claus-booing Eagles fans. But if research that I conducted in 2006 is still accurate today, Philadelphia should also be known for all-inclusive voting - that is, voting regardless of whether one has a pulse or is otherwise eligible to cast a vote..." http://pjmedia.com/blog/small-sample-of-philly-voter-rolls-reveals-hundreds-of-ineligible-names-pjm-exclusive/ There is a bright light on our horizon even though Salena Zito asserted that Pennsylvania electoral votes will depend on turn out in the Philadelphia suburbs: "Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter didn't mince words after four kids were shot and three killed in Philadelphia Tuesday night. "The first way to stop this kind of stuff is for young people to be home when they're supposed to be home, and for adults not to act like idiots and assholes out in the streets of our city shooting at kids in a car," Nutter told FOX 29... A spokesperson for the mayor told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Nutter stood by his statement. "He said what he said. He was clear about it, and he meant it. He said what everybody else was thinking," said spokesman Mark McDonald..." http://dailycaller.com/2012/01/12/philly-mayor-dont-act-like-idiots-and-assholes/ What are Mayor Mike's reactions to fraud? Does he value "value" above "deals"? Meanwhile, many Pennsylvanians look to Harrisburg to pass a "Voter ID" law that requires each of us to carry a card with our photo and address on it. Our Governor also says that he needs the law in place by the first week of February if it is to be used this coming November. On the other hand, I recall my son's friends in college fattening their wallets by selling bogus photo ID to students who wanted to buy liquor. I'm sure ACORN knows how to do such things. The ID cards will make cheating a bit more difficult and more expensive for organizers and possibly, but not necessarily, less frequent. And the rest of us will pay the bills for cheaters...

PA implementing ObamaCare exchanges
I wanted to update you on the exchange situation. First, unfortunately we are getting started late in the game. Having spoken with 4 different legislators (Rep Saylor, Boyd, Bear, and Sen Waugh), I believe the general sense on their part is that they want to be prepared to set up an exchange if SCOTUS doesn't declare ObamaCare unconstitutional.
Their reasoning for supporting the exchange is that PA will have more control if PA sets up the exchange rather than the feds. We have been arguing that in fact: the exchange structure and operation is dictated by the feds, through law and regulation, regardless if the state sets it up or not; that whatever little "control" a PA would have does not mitigate any of the true horrors of the law; establishing the exchange legitimizes PPACA and undercut PA's federal lawsuit against PPACA, creates more PA expense and government, scedes state sovereignty, misses an opportunity to block the law and to have standing for further legal action. (please see attached documents if you want more explanation).
We have more legislator visits planned, but it is clear to me that none of the legislators thus far will take on this fight. We must generate the grass roots response to move them to do so. It is disgusting that our Republican Governor and legislature can't pass meaningful right to work legislation, LCB reform, PA TPK Commission reform, school reform, etc but unless we respond in a big way, will make PA government bigger, make PA government poorer, harm PA citizen liberty and health by implementing an exchange.
I have contacted Campaign for Liberty to see if they are interested in coordinating efforts to stop the exchange. I will also contact the PA Manufacturer's Association and the Chamber of Commerce, both of whom support repeal of PPACA, also for potential coordination of activities.
We are working on an on-line petition rejecting PPACA and the exchanges for PA physicians to sign and ultimately deliver by several physicians to Harrisburg.
On Wednesday, I participated in a debate put on by the Lehigh Valley Coalition for Health Care Reform (Donna Rovito). Leo Knepper and I presented the anti-exchange positition while a rep from the PA Dept of Insurance and Dr Schmeltz of the PA Medical Society presented the for pro position. For what it is worth, I believe we had the more compelling argument.
I welcome any thought you all have.
This exchange is going to happen unless we act together in a big way.
D4PC Exchange Testimony State Leg Guide to Repealing ObamaCare |
We have an amazing opportunity before us today, to score a BIG WIN for taxpayers and small businesses...but we can't do it without your help!
Please click here to send an email to your Representative and tell him or her to vote yes on the prevailing wage reform bills before the House today!
At 1pm, our PA Legislators are voting to amend the prevailing wage laws that have long favored unions and hurt working families and small businesses!
Could you please email your legislator right now and ask him or her to vote YES on two prevailing wage reform bills: H.B. 1329 ("Threshold") and H.B. 1685 ("Jobs Classification")?
Our politicians must not only hear from the unions...they must hear from YOU and I...the people who bear the burden of paying for these bills!
Here's a quick overview of the bills:
The "Jobs Classification Bill" will require Pennsylvania to define job classifications on public works projects. The lack of definitions has been used by some unions to attack and file frivolous grievances against small business owners, costing Pennsylvania jobs and tax dollars.
The "threshold bill" will end the artificially low estimated cost of total project from $25,000 to conform to the Consumer Price Index of the previous calendar year. The current amount was based on the 1963 Consumer Price Index and allowed prevailing wage to kick in at too low a threshold making it a costly endeavor for school districts and municipalities to fund minor projects.
Will you please ask your legislator to vote "YES" to H.B. 1329 ("Threshold") and H.B. 1685 ("Jobs Classification")? Don't miss this chance to score a win for the taxpayers and small businesses of Pennsylvania!
Thank you for all your hard work!
In Liberty and Solidarity,
Jennifer Stefano
PS - These two bills are going on our legislative scorecard and every Representative will be graded on their vote.

1. 10 Ways Obama Could Reduce Gasoline Prices Now
Tulsa World headline:
Obama: No magic bullet to lower gas prices
Speaking of bumper stickers, remember "Yes We Can", Mr. President? No one understands the concept better than the oil and gas industry. The main thing holding domestic energy companies back from making a stronger commitment to future domestic supplies is uncertainty. Capital hates uncertainty, avoids it like the plague. Your rhetoric may appease your doctrinaire base, but it makes domestic energy producers hold back, fearful that you will punish their success, or that you will change the rules on them in the middle of the game.
Erasing uncertainty is the #1 thing you can do as a national leader if you truly desire to lower gasoline prices. Not only could it change the psychology of energy investing, there is still time for companies to change their 2012 investment plans.
Below the fold is my humble 10-point plan: Things President Obama could (but won't) do to reduce domestic gasoline prices by November 2012.
2. Obama Campaign Declares the GOP 'Obsessed,' then Goes on to Rant Obsessively about the Koch Bros In an epic self-awareness fail, the Obama campaign sent an email this afternoon from campaign manager Jim Messina which bore the subject line "They're Obsessed," and which mentioned the left's current bogeymen, the Koch Brothers, in the first line and in five of the email's eight total sentences. 3. FROM SEN. RICK SANTORUM: For Religious Minorities in the Middle East - With Friends Like Obama, Who Needs Enemies?! President Obama has an amazing ability to make Jimmy Carter's foreign policies look good. Opposition to imperfect allies and support of radical Islamists has resulted in the almost-extinction of religious freedom for religious minorities - from the Copts in Egypt to the defenseless women and children who were slaughtered in Homs, Syria - in the Middle East. Another example is the devolving situation in Iraq. President Obama was so committed to fulfilling an arbitrary campaign promise to get our troops out of Iraq that he ignored the advice of his senior military officials about the consequences of establishing a firm withdrawal date and about how long it might take before Iraq was ready to manage the situation on their own. As a result, Al-Qa'ida is resurgent, Iran's influence is greater than ever, religious tensions between Sunni and Shi'a are increasing, the existential threat facing Iraq's indigenous minority communities has never been greater, and our ability to affect the situation there is weaker now. Recent coordinated car bomb attacks are just the latest in a string of such events since the start of the new year, and they portend many more violent assaults to come. 4. NJ Teachers' Union Thugs Protest At Student's Home To Send Father A Message In Delsea, New Jersey, the teachers' union (a sub-chapter of the NEA) has been fighting over the amount of their pay increases (not decreases) since 2010. On Valentine's Day, according to NJ.com, the union teachers decided to make their grievance personal by protesting in front of the Delsea school board president's home. Unfortunately, the school board president was not home-but his children were, including his daughter whose teachers were among those protesting outside her home. 5. Time to end caucuses for President The discussion of Republican Party rules reform is beginning in the aftermath of the catastrophe of the new rules that were created by the RNC leadership in 2010. Many people attribute the lengthening process to just the new rules, but I would argue that there are several other factors. Some of the obvious ones are the weakness of the candidate field and new campaign finance structures. It is hard to imagine how Newt Gingrich would have been able to compete in South Carolina or Rick Santorum pretty much anywhere without SuperPAC support. Their campaigns would have run out of money in previous years, and their shows would have been up. Blaming the "proportional" rules misses the point somewhat, as none of the states that have gone yet other than Florida previously operated under proportional rules. The real disaster of this cycle has been the presidential preference caucus. In Iowa, Nevada, and Maine, we have had disastrous voting procedures, with results unknown or in flux for days. In Iowa, this led to the resignation of the state party chair Matt Strawn. In Nevada, the state party's failed efforts to run a caucus have been widely panned, although the state party chair had already announced that she was stepping down, so there hasn't been the same kind of accountability. In Maine, I am hearing that state party Chairman Charlie Webster, who I quite like personally, is coming under tremendous pressure from county party chairs, elected officials and the party executive committee to step down.

The U.S. Constitution
A Reader
Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.
Editorial Note: Just received a couple of copies of the reader. Not just a short course pamphlet this; with the heft of 'Atlas Shrugged', it is well worth getting whether or not you choose to take the course.
About Hillsdale College
Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."
Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs. Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012. |

A Troubling Trend in the Courts
Should judges act based upon reasoned legal arguments, or based upon their personal feelings and media coverage? A controversial recent "statement" made by Justices Ginsburg and Breyer in a case that was the legal equivalent of a slam dunk raises serious questions about what really guides some judges.
In the case, American Tradition Partnership v. Bullock, the Court was asked to address a Montana Supreme Court opinion upholding a Montana ban on independent expenditures by corporations. This should be an easy case-after all, the Court ruled in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that bans on independent political expenditures by corporations and unions violate the First Amendment.

Uncivil Rights
The civil rights movement is a success story, so much so that any and every movement has found that it can borrow the narrative and tactics of it to ram through whatever measures it likes. And so we come to the year 2012 where civil rights means men in dresses having the right to use the ladies room and the right of terrorist groups to be free from police scrutiny-- among many other equally insane "rights". Much as the Civil Rights movement went from trying to reverse legal inequality embedded in law to trying to enforce an equality of outcome in every sphere from the commercial to the educational to the social by depriving others of their rights, succeeding movements have borrowed the narrative of inequality and the tactics of achieving equal outcomes, even when such outcomes are physically impossible. We are for example obligated to believe that surgical intervention can transform women into men and that the only differences between the two can be eliminated with a few incisions and a few hormones. Applying the civil rights model moves the question from the realms of science and philosophy to the moral absolutism of resisting oppression. And that is the left's home field. The left is constantly on the prowl for the oppressed, even if the new oppressed are men who want to use the ladies room. And the oppressed can never be denied anything they want, instead there is an affirmative obligation on the entitled people who are not confused about which bathroom they want to use, to prove that they are granting every possible privilege and courtesy to the bewildered and confused. Guilty until proven innocent is the new approach. It is not enough to not actively discriminate, we must prove that we are not discriminating by meeting our diversity quotas. We are forced to become the Stakhanovites of political correctness, exceeding our diversity quotas as a model to the nation. That means everyplace must look exactly like "America", a phrase that is best interpreted as meaning that every workplace must look like the ones on television. And every ladies room must have at least one man in a dress. Very little of this has to do with the kind of rights that were fought for from Appomattox to Selma. Instead individual freedom and equality before the law has been twisted to justify a state of legal inequality and the deprivation of individual freedoms. Rather than a color-blind society, we have achieved a color conscious society in which everyone knows their place on the great ladder of diversity. Slavery has not gone away, we are just confronted with it on a day to day basis. Our slaves live in China or in Africa. They serve the same purposes that slaves did before the Civil War, they make things cheaply so that they can be sold cheaply. The only difference is that we rarely pass them on the street or see advertisements for slave auctions. There is still slavery even in the United States. Mexican and Chinese laborers whose families are held hostage back home, and prosperous Muslim families who bring along their tradition of the house slave, often teenage girls who are treated little better than dogs. But the slave owners are generally members of the same race and culture as the slaves, which makes the entire affair beneath the notice of the political commissars of political correctness.

SPEAKEASY I did an interview yesterday on the Speakeasy with Guy Green and if you want to listen then you can go to their site or try the embedded version here. THE LIFE OF A KORAN What is worth more in the eyes of Obama, an American soldier or a Koran? We all got the answer to that when after an Afghan soldier murdered two American soldiers, Obama apologized to the Afghan government because their already defaced Korans were not properly respected, venerated, kissed and tucked into bed. DRILL BARRY, DRILL So four years after a serenade of Drill Baby Drill, the cost of gas is climbing through the roof. It's almost like it's impossible to drill for oil in this country. And no amount of Chevy Volts being bought by GM employees is going to save the day. The tactical policy of the left has been to drive up energy prices to force people to "cut back", but the people being forced to cut back aren't Barack 'Hawaii Temperatures in the Oval Office' Obama, it's actual Americans who don't have their heating bills covered by taxpayers. "It's the easiest thing in the world to make phony election-year promises about lower gas prices," Obama told a crowd at the University of Miami. "What's harder is to make a serious, sustained commitment to tackle a problem that may not be solved in one year or one term or even one decade." ... or you know... ever. Because buying a whole lot of subsidized solar panels or bailing out car companies and forcing them to make energy efficient cars that people don't want, doesn't solve anything. Sustainable is the key word here and that means following the Euro plan of hiking energy prices and taxing what's left to keep people miserable and deprived. To the left it's a matter of stating the problem. And their view of the problem is not a technological one, but a human problem. The problem being that people exploit natural resources for their own comfort and the only way to make them stop is to raise prices. Characterizing Republicans' energy policy, he said: "Step one is drill, step two is drill and step three is keep drilling. You know that's not a plan - especially since we're already drilling. That's a bumper sticker."
Now drilling for oil is actually a pretty good plan, because it's how you get oil. Just like you get money by working for it or you get wheat by growing it. It's the actual definition of what a plan is. But that's too simplistic for Caliph Nuance who thinks plans need to be so ridiculously complicated that they can only be unraveled by a drunken Columbo with a copy of Das Kapital. Sure we could go out and drill for oil. But that's not a plan. What we need to do is not drill for oil. Then we borrow money from China to buy solar panels from China. Then we wait while gas prices go through the roof. Then we give the people a lecture on saving money by going green. Then we go play golf on the greens. Then we visit China and beg them for more money. Now that's an energy policy that we can all get behind. And by "We", I mean the left and companies getting money from the government to go green. But don't worry if we get into trouble and by "We", I mean if Obama's election prospects dim, there's always a release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Or maybe O will go bow to the Saudi King and offer to overthrow another government to replace it with the Muslim Brotherhood if he'll give a brother a break. But if drilling for oil isn't a plan, how do you get energy then? Option 1, drill for oil. Option 2, make sure to use "sustainability" as often as possible in your speeches. Liberals like to claim that they are part of the "Reality Based Community". I just have to ask what reality is it based on? Read more: |

Intelligence Gap
Israel and the U.S. clash over progress of Iran's nuclear program
9:54 PM on Sunday, February 26, 2012 - Adar 3, 5772 Will they or won't they build a bomb? That question appears to be at the center of a clash between Israeli and American intelligence services over Iran's nuclear program. The New York Times reports that 16 U.S. intelligence agencies agree that Iran is not aiming toward the manufacture of a nuclear weapon. The Israeli government, citing the latest I.A.E.A. report as only it's latest evidence, claims that Iran does indeed plan to build a weapon. Here's the Times: Recent assessments by American spy agencies are broadly consistent with a 2007 intelligence finding that concluded that Iran had abandoned its nuclear weapons program years earlier, according to current and former American officials. The officials said that assessment was largely reaffirmed in a 2010 National Intelligence Estimate, and that it remains the consensus view of America's 16 intelligence agencies.
And here's the Israeli government's response to that report and the I.A.E.A. findings: Read more:

EDITORIAL BY MORTIMER B. ZUCKERMAN
February 24, 2012
Time Is Running
Out to Prevent
a Nuclear Iran
The gravest national security challenge facing the United States is clearly how to prevent Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability. It is also the most urgent.
Conciliation has failed. Diplomacy has failed. Coercion has failed. Covert action has failed. These efforts have no doubt delayed the regime in Tehran, but they have not deterred it. Iran has persisted with its two-track strategy of straight-faced denial that it is intent on becoming a nuclear-armed power and its secret determination to be one. Its stock in trade is deceit and lies.
The collapse this week of a mission of U.N. nuclear experts, after the Iranians denied them permission to inspect a military site and refused to clarify other issues, underscores the need for prompt actions. These should include more forceful sanctions, a strong reassertion of the U.S. military option, and clear moves by the administration to back up the military threat.
The clock is running on atomic time. Iran is now about to cross the nuclear threshold. In January at its secret works beneath a mountain near the holy city of Qom, it started producing 20 percent enriched uranium. The next step is the 90 percent needed for weaponry. The Iranians have begun moving in more efficient centrifuges that are now so well protected that missile strikes may not be able to affect them. Iran is on the verge of entering what is referred to as a zone of immunity, and it is also seen close to having the ability to prepare more than one missile-ready device within about three months of a decision to proceed. This is critical because any military operation designed to abort Iran's nuclear efforts after the main facility becomes fully operational would be meaningless or irrelevant: It would be physically impossible to destroy it or so costly as to be prohibitive. The imperative of stopping progress will run into the impossibility of doing so.
The coolest assessment is by U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper: "Iran's technical advancement, particularly in uranium enrichment, strengthens our assessment that Iran has the scientific, technical, and industrial capacity to eventually produce nuclear weapons, making the central issue its political will to do so." At the same time, there is no "eventually" about Iran's drive for offensive missiles. Iran, says Clapper, "has the largest inventory of ballistic missiles in the Middle East and it is expanding the scale, reach, and sophistication of its ballistic missile force, many of which are inherently capable of carrying a nuclear payload." So what have these missiles to do with the development of nuclear power for the "peaceful" purposes Iran professes?
Iran's missiles can reach not only Israel but capitals in Western Europe or even Moscow, a capacity that would give the Jewish state between 10 and 12 minutes warning. For the last several years, the strongest, most consistent pressure on Washington to act against Iran has come from its neighbors in the Arab world. WikiLeaks revealed that America's Arab allies have been just as adamant in private for the past few years as Israel, and they want America to use all means necessary to prevent a nuclear Iran. According to the leaked documents, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi described Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as "Hitler" and said that "all hell will break loose" if Iran went nuclear. Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Washington, Adel al-Jubeir, was cited as conveying the message from the Saudi king that he wanted the United States to "cut off the head of the snake," referring to Iran's leadership. Further, the United Arab Emirates ambassador to the United States told Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic magazine in 2010 that if the United States allowed Iran to cross the nuclear threshold, the small Arab countries of the Persian Gulf region would have no choice but to leave the American orbit and align themselves with Iran out of self-protection.
Arab leaders know that if Iran succeeds, peace in the Arab world will disappear. This should cause all leaders of the free world to lose sleep, for the Iranians have demonstrated that they are, time and again, willing to pay a steep price to realize their ambitions.
There is a wise axiom, "Do not take the smallest chance of a catastrophic outcome." An Iran led by fanatical, brutal, and millenarian leaders may bring about such an outcome because their radical ideology makes them impervious to any deterrence that we normally think would restrain most countries. Today's president of Iran is said to speak repeatedly about how his actions are influenced by an imam who disappeared hundreds of years ago.
Iran has been consistent in one thing. It has shown consistent hostility to the United States and its allies. It is by all accounts the world's chief sponsor of terrorism. It can transfer nuclear materials to terrorists with the same care for peace as it exhibits in supplying thousands of missiles to Hezbollah. Imagine the havoc it could create in the United States by making small nuclear "dirty" bombs and using suicide attackers to bring them into Manhattan or Los Angeles ports.
President Obama in his inaugural address offered to extend the hand of friendship to nations such as Iran if those leaders would "unclench your fist," and followed it up with a personal letter to the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and an appeal on YouTube, including a salutation in Farsi. For that, he got a rant about American imperialism. It is a murderous regime unmoved by reason, resistant to goodwill. Iran was directly responsible for the deaths of many American soldiers in Iraq by supplying guerrillas with high- tech roadside bombs. It is the most implacable enemy of everything that America has tried to accomplish in the Middle East.
Listen to how the regime's founding principles have been described: "We do not worship Iran, we worship Allah," the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, leader of the 1979 revolution, has been quoted as saying, "for patriotism is another name for paganism. I say let this land burn. I say let this land go up in smoke, provided Islam remains triumphant in the rest of the world."
Look at Iran's history. This was a regime that during its war with Iraq put 100,000 children at risk of death to clear the minefields. Khomeini compiled a list of 500 people to be killed. He sent a hit squad to murder exiles in Germany. The Iranians are strongly suspected of involvement in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, which killed 241 service members, as well as the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia that killed 19 Americans. As for the 1992 and 1994 bombings of the Israeli Embassy and the Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires, look to Ahmad Vahidi, who today is Iran's defense minister. Recently the Iranians tried in the clumsiest way to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in Washington. This should be a wake-up call, for it reflects that Tehran thinks it can continue to attack American interests with impunity. Iran's identity is wrapped up in its opposition to the United States to the point where Iranian leaders do not seek any accommodation with us.
If its nuclear efforts are fulfilled in the next few months, Iran will emerge as the dominant force in the energy-rich Persian Gulf, threatening to destabilize moderate Arab regimes, subvert the United States in Iraq and Afghanistan, embolden radicals, and blow up the Middle East peace process, while increasing its support for terrorism and proxy warfare across the region.
What has been the response of the United States and much of the rest of the world? They have allowed Iran to cross one red line after another without consequences. As Ahmadinejad has noted, "A few years ago, they [the West] said we had to completely stop all our nuclear activities. Now, look where we are today." Every red line the United States has drawn exposes that we have been bluffing. No wonder the world sees the U.S. leadership as made up of hollow threats and a weakening will toward Iran's ambitions.
Who will trust U.S. security guarantees if America fails to stop Iran from going nuclear? Those who advise countries to wait until later may end up discovering that "later is too late," as the Israeli defense minister has put it. A nuclear Iran would be unlike any other nuclear power the world has known because it is a messianic, apocalyptic regime. A Bipartisan Policy Center report this month by former Sen. Charles Robb and retired four-star Gen. Chuck Wald noted that "Iran has advanced dramatically in its quest for a nuclear weapon" and concluded, "At this late date, it is only the threat of force, combined with sanctions, that affords any realistic hope of an acceptable diplomatic resolution." (Disclosure: I am on the task force of the center's National Security Project, which produced the report.)
The credible threat of military action against Iran's nuclear program is the only way to pressure the regime to negotiate in good faith, and that threat can come only from the United States or Israel. If America takes the military option off the table, no one will be able to come to terms with a nuclear Iran. After all, the Bipartisan Policy Center report pointed out, it was fear of military action that led Iran to briefly halt its nuclear program after U.S. forces toppled Iraq's Saddam Hussein in 2003. But this means that the United States must reveal its willingness to use force.
The United States thus faces the paradox of the evil of two lessers: The cost and risks of military action against Iran may well be high, but not as high as the cost of a nuclear Iran. And Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states have said that in the event of a disruption of Iranian oil, they will fill the gap as best they can.
The world now realizes that the Obama administration has abandoned the only strategy that would ensure the prevention of a nuclear Iran. It is merely playing a game of words. Witness the change in administration officials' language. They no longer use the word "unacceptable" as applied to Iran's program. They use the word "isolate," shifting the focus to managing rather than neutralizing the Iranian nuclear threat. This suggests they are unwilling to use military means to prevent a nuclear Iran-in other words, a policy of containment. Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, went out of his way on television to say that "it's not prudent at this point to attack Iran." The president's earlier pledge "to use all elements of American power to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon" is now in the dustbin, as the United States seeks ways "to isolate" and "increase the pressure upon the Iranian regime."
The administration has not even pressed for full-fledged sanctions against Iran's central bank, a move backed by all U.S. senators. Its lack of support for a military option has undercut the ability to achieve broader international support for sanctions, such that now other countries, such as China, are undermining the impact of our sanctions. The United States is leading diplomatic processes to nowhere while the Iranians are successfully playing for time, and time is on their side. In fact, since Obama has taken office, the United States seems to have devoted more energy to pressuring Israel against contemplating a military response rather than preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. It has publicly highlighted and privately warned Israeli leaders of the risks of an Israeli military strike, despite the concern that the window for a viable military strike could close in 2012, at which point the Iranian regime will be able to complete its nuclear program without any effective disruption and on a timetable that it chooses.
The United States hasn't even shown the credible preparations such as military exercises and deployment in the region. Yet it is America that must act and continue to provide a security blanket to guarantee the security of our Gulf state allies including Qatar, the U.A.E., Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. This means a more extensive embargo on Iran than the one we imposed on Cuba at the time of the missile crisis. Timelines are now critical, for we will surely pass the point after which an attack could not derail Iran's nuclear capacity, given that the facilities for its so-called peaceful program are so heavily fortified.
Instead this administration huffs and puffs and huffs and puffs, but it is nowhere near blowing the house down. What is at stake here is too menacing for the world to assume or delude itself that Iran will somehow change course under these conditions. The latest attempt by Iran to substitute talks for deeds is a dispatch of a 200-word letter agreeing to a renewal of talks with the major powers on its nuclear program. The talks will be a test of whether the Iranians continue their policy of substituting talks for actions so that they can keep the centrifuges spinning and complete their sprint to the finish line. If Iran succeeds, it would expose the Obama administration to doubts about its resolve to shape events in the Middle East.
The administration's only hope, and it is a slim one, is that Iran's leaders become concerned about losing political control as popular discontent increases over the sanctions' effects, and would then be willing to recalculate the costs and benefits of their nuclear activities and perhaps become receptive to negotiating constraints in exchange for the removal of sanctions. But Tehran's rulers believe the United States will fail to apply adequate pressure out of concern that it would cause a spike in oil prices that would affect the domestic U.S. economy and hence the forthcoming presidential election.
Virtually every expert on the Middle East believes that Iran will use a nuclear weapon if it is able to gain one. When historians review this period, they will compare the performance of our leadership to that of either British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, who failed to confront Hitler, or his successor Winston Churchill, who saved the West when he had the courage to stand up to the fanaticism of the Nazi regime.

GOP Elites' Problem With Santorum GrassTopsUSA Exclusive Commentary By Don Feder 02/27/2012 Memo to social conservatives: In trying to understand RINO revulsion for former Senator Rick Santorum, remember that while leftists who run the Democratic Party loath you, the GOP/fiscal-conservative elite only has withering contempt for you. Isn't that comforting? One of my inside-the-Beltway friends is a businessman who moves comfortably in establishment conservative circles. When he tells colleagues that he's a values conservative, he's met with looks of incredulity that suggest they're thinking: "But, wait a minute, you're wearing shoes and your teeth aren't crooked. My God, man, you have a post-graduate degree in the humanities. You're not clutching rosary beads and your speech isn't punctuated with 'praise the lord!'" Wall Street Republicans in effect are telling pro-lifers, family-values activists and the rest of us that in their proverbial big tent, there's a tiny corner reserved for us where we're expected to sit quietly with our hands folded in our laps, until it's time to come out and work our tails off for whichever clueless candidate - Ford, George H.W. Bush, Dole, McCain - they choose as the GOP standard-bearer. Writing in The Wall Street Journal last week, Kimberley A. Strassel dubbed Santorum the "moralizer in chief." GOP candidates are allowed occasionally to express pro-morality views as throwaway lines - at least during the primary season. What infuriates the Republican elite is that Santorum says them with conviction. This will alienate the vast mushy middle, Strassel insists. "Exurbanites," career women, soccer-dads and Bill Maher fans "are not so thrilled by the recent trend in the social-conservative movement toward using government to impose a particular morality - a trend that Mr. Santorum would seem to highlight." Impose a particular morality - like requiring Catholic institutions to provide contraceptives through their insurance plans, imposing gay marriage on the 30 states whose voters have resoundingly rejected it by referendum, subjecting school children to diversity indoctrination, funding Planned Parenthood, and providing public decapitation for those who commit "hate crimes"? As I've tried to explain many times to the philosophically unwashed, every law is based on someone's concept of right and wrong. It's impossible to legislate without legislating morality. Apparently, it's also impossible to be too dumb to write for the Journal. Santorum stands accused of promising to "revitalize religious communities and families." Strassel says voters like faith and family, they just don't like candidates who talk about reviving them. Voters (who? where?) are also offended by Santorum's tendency to "wax on about the 'emotions' surrounding women on the front lines," his "problem with homosexual acts" and his suggestion that perhaps women who have children should take the time to raise them, instead of consigning the cherubs to paid caregivers. Those who don't have a problem with women in combat have a problem with reality. The riot of emotions provoked by PMS aside, you don't have to be a traditional Catholic to wonder about how well a 120-pound woman is going to hold up in battle after carrying 60-pounds of equipment for 20 miles. Santorum's "finger-wagging on contraception and child-rearing and 'homosexual acts' disrespects the vast majority of couples who use birth control, or who refuse to believe that the emancipation of women, or society's increasing tolerance of gays, signals the end of the Republic," Strassel huffs. Citing the ultimate authority, the Journal writer claims that Ronald Reagan forged a successful coalition of economic and social conservatives by focusing exclusively on the desire of each group to be free of government interference - a piece of historical revisionism of breathtaking scope. Where does government leaving us alone leave the 1.2 million children who are aborted in this country each year? It's fascinating the way Wall Street Republicans can separate the inconsequential (life issues, marriage, child-rearing) from the really important stuff - marginal tax rates and the national debt. When he called for a "truce" on social issues (moving values to the "back burner") in 2010, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels said nothing must distract voters - who clearly are incapable of holding two thoughts simultaneously - from the national debt, "that the republic is mortally threatened... by this one overriding problem we have built ourselves." But astronomical deficits and a runaway debt careening toward the abyss can't be separated from America's moral collapse - reflected in abortion stats, the out-of-wedlock birthrate, the increasing obsolescence of marriage for the young and judges who've made a fetish of equality. A nation with a moral compass that works doesn't let its politicians steer it to a $15.4 trillion national debt and $1 trillion-plus annual deficits. Daniels' call went over so well that his once-likely presidential candidacy blew up on the launch pad. The thing that really galls The Jane Austen Book Club Republicans is how well social issues work. After the 2010 mid-term election, The Polling Company found that 30% of voters said abortion affected their choice. Of those, 22% backed pro-life candidates and 8% picked pro-aborts - giving candidates who support the right to life an almost three-to-one advantage. Since 1998, 30 states have enacted constitutional amendments limiting marriage to couples with complementary equipment, all by constitutional amendment. Natural marriage won by a high of 81% in Alabama and Tennessee to a low of 52% in California and South Dakota. The average was over 60%. If Ohio hadn't had a marriage amendment on its 2004 ballot - drawing out barefooted voters without dental plans - Bush would likely have lost the state and with it the election. I love it when the Strassel-wing of the Republican Party cites the Gipper on the value of downplaying social issues. Ronald Reagan was a culture warrior before the expression was in vogue. "The real question today is not when human life begins," our 40th president observed: "But what is the value of human life? The abortionist who reassembles the arms and legs of a tiny baby to make sure all of its parts have been torn from its mother's body can hardly doubt whether it is a human being. The real question for him and for all of us is whether that tiny human life has a God-given right to be protected by the law - the same as we have." Reaching previously unheard of heights of finger-wagging, moralizing and disrespect for the vast majority of couples who blah-blah-blah, during the 1980 campaign, Reagan addressed 15,000 evangelical leaders in Dallas. With him on the stage were figures reviled by self-styled moderate Republicans - including Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, D. James Kennedy, Bailey Smith, James Robison and Phyllis Schlafly. The line most quoted from Reagan's speech was when he told Christian leaders, "I know you can't endorse me...but I want you to know that I endorse you and what you are doing." Less well known are his statements that America needed "that old-time religion" to become "a shining city on a hill," that the Bible contained the answer to all of the problems confronting the nation, and that he endorsed teaching creationism in the public schools. Could there be a connection between Reagan's moral worldview and an administration that cut taxes, brought back prosperity after Carter-era stagflation and stopped Soviet communism dead in its tracks? This is a rhetorical question. Despite aspiring to be "moralizer in chief," Reagan won a plurality of women's votes in a three-way race in 1980 (49% to 44% for Carter) and a solid majority when he ran for reelection in 1984 (55% to 45% for Mondale). He did even better among men - due to the Democrats' problem appealing to male voters. With shock bordering on bewilderment, on February 23, The Washington Post reported that after weeks of having "waded into controversies that risk alienating half of the 2012 electorate - women," over the past few weeks, Santorum has gained 13 percentage points among Republican women nationwide. Now, 57% hold a favorable view of the finger-wager, only slightly less than Romney's favorability (61%) among the same demographic, while his unfavorables are substantially lower than the Governor's (18% to 28%). Strassel argues that elections are "not won on bases alone," but "on the margins." Wrong. They're won by candidates who can solidify and electrify the base, which will then take their message beyond the base. The electorate hungers for authenticity, from-the-heart passion and moral clarity, which is why Romney can't close the deal, despite his uber-fundraising, organizational advantage and slew of prominent endorsements. He may not be the nominee, but Rick Santorum has given many of us a reason to believe in the Republican Party again.

Obama's "zealot" mistake
To accomplish this destruction Obama had to select an equally foaming at the mouth anti capitalism zealot to help him. He selected Steven Chu and made him our Energy Secretary. That is proving to be a mistake for Obama and a blessing for us.
To Obama's chagrin he is learning that for purposes of engineering a sneak attack it is better to use a run of the mill phony Democrat who knows enough to hide his intentions, than a true believe anti-capitalist.
Even before the 2008 election, when Europeans were paying more than twice our pump prices, Chu said, "Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the ... Continue Reading:"Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe"

The Syrian Mess

The civil war in Syria has been in the news lately. Most of the reports have been focused on describing the Assad regime as the evil empire killing innocent civilians in places that have no military value. What the press isn't telling us is this is a war between two evil entities.
The Regime
The Assad regime is a Ba'ath Party dictatorship and like a majority of dictatorships the son takes over when the father dies. The atrocities committed by this regime can fill volumes. The military is loyal to the regime and has been committing atrocities within its boarder to protect the regime. The military depends on Russia for its weapons and military support. China and Iran are also aligned with the regime and will block any UN sanctions being placed against it. The wildcard Assad has is a sizable stockpile of Chemical and Biological Weapons. To date there is no ... Continue Reading:The Syrian Mess

"Remember the Alamo!" In 1821, Mexico won independence from Spain and established a Mexican Republic with a Federal Constitution. In 1833, Santa Anna was elected President of Mexico, but quickly turned his presidency into a dictatorship by rejecting the Constitution, demanding high taxes and seizing guns. Santa Ana punished States not submitting to his centralized government, such as: San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Durango, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Yucatán, Jalisco, and Coahuila y Tejas. In Zacatecas, Santa Ana defeated Francisco Garcia, took 3,000 prisoners and let his army ransack the city for two days. Federal General José Antonio Mexía marched from New Orleans to Tampico, but Santa Ana defeated him and executed every prisoner. The Battle of the Alamo began FEBRUARY 24, 1836, when General Santa Ana's 3,000 troops attacked 189 Texans and Tejanos at San Antonio. In 13 days, all defenders were killed, including William Travis, Davy Crockett ... Continue Reading:American Minute Feb. 24

Testing how dumb they are, Obama tells college kids we can replace oil with pond scum

Now that the Election of 2012 is heating up Barack Obama and his Party have to build some rationale for reelecting him. This process starts with developing a feel for just how much the halfwits who vote Democrat will fall for. Obama knows that in 2008 they fell for vague gibberish about "Hope and Change" without knowing who he is or what he really wanted to do to us. Now four years later even the dumbest among "Rev. Obama's" flock realizes he has not delivered on his promises and they still don't know who he is.
Consequently, it's back to the drawing board. You can almost hear David Axelrod saying, "Send out Wasserman-Schultz and Pelosi to tell the dimwits unemployment is really going down the economy is doing great and the gas prices are up because Republicans won't let the boss drill anywhere."
Yesterday Obama spoke to a group of ill-educated clapping seals at the ... Continue Reading:Testing how dumb they are, Obama tells college kids we can replace oil with pond scum

Who's a Christian?

"Progressives" like to start an "Alinskyite" argument among free men and women to exploit their arguments of who is truly Christian. Of course, in the process, they obfuscate their own Baal worship with its child sacrifice, obsession with feces and worship of death.
As a lifelong Catholic, like Rick Santorum, and very appreciative of a repentant Newt Gingrich, I have stood the stones and arrows of fundamentalists and evangelicals accusing me and my faith as not being Christian. 2000 years of surviving one heresy after another and an infinite number of differences of opinion, I suspect God is working out his Covenant plan in spite of us.
As a (very) amateur theologian, I am also quite aware of the difference between Mitt Romney's Mormonism and other Bible-oriented sects. I'm also aware of a wide range of beliefs among Christians, among Jews and among Muslims (heck, they even suicide bomb each others' shrines on holy ... Continue Reading:Who's a Christian?

The Panama Canal Zone was acquired by the U.S. for ten million dollars on FEBRUARY 23, 1904. Planned by President William McKinley, construction on the canal began under President Theodore Roosevelt. President William Taft stated in his Address to Congress, December 6, 1912: "Our defense of the Panama Canal, together with our enormous world trade and our missionary outposts on the frontiers of civilization, require us to recognize our position as one of the foremost in the family of nations, and to clothe ourselves with sufficient naval power to give force to our reasonable demands, and to give weight to our influence in those directions of progress that a powerful Christian nation should advocate." Did Willard just lie about forcing Massachusetts Catholic hospitals to dispense RU 486?

By Kevin "Coach" Collins
Believing Willard Romney when he is talking about not forcing Catholic hospitals to dispense R U 486 pills is not easy.
During last night's Republican Presidential primary debate in Arizona, Willard used strong unequivocal words to deny that as governor of Massachusetts he had forced Catholic hospitals to dispense "morning after" RU 486 abortion inducing pills which is against the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. Romney said, "No, absolutely not. Of course not. There was no requirement in Massachusetts for the Catholic Church to provide morning-after pills to rape victims. That was entirely voluntary on their part. There was no such requirement."
Did Willard tell the truth? You decide.
On December 8, 2005 as governor of Massachusetts Willard Romney announced that private hospitals including those run by the Catholic Church would be forced by the power of the State of Massachusetts to offer emergency contraception to sexual assault victims without ... Competing Tax Visions
Obama and Romney lay out tax plans
The tax proposals of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney serve as alternative visions for the nation. Obama's stifles growth through higher rates on the productive and pays lip service to "fairness" and "fiscal responsibility." Romney's enables growth and builds upon the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003. While Romney should have gone further, his plan is far preferable to Obama's.
The devil, as they say, is in the details. The Leftmedia trumpet Obama's plan to cut the corporate rate from 35 percent to 28 percent -- still above the world's average rate of 25. Yet his plan would merely move the U.S. from the second highest corporate rate in the world to the fourth highest -- with fewer deductions and new penalties to boot. For example, Obama would require for the first time that U.S. companies pay a minimum tax rate on any foreign earnings. His plan also distorts the playing field by favoring some industries over others he doesn't like. Overall, the administration says that American businesses would pay $250 billion more in taxes. It's important to note, however, that corporations don't pay corporate taxes; consumers and employees do through higher prices and lower wages.
By comparison, The Wall Street Journal reports, "All the Republican presidential candidates have called for lower corporate tax rates. Mitt Romney proposes reducing the top rate to 25%. Rick Santorum proposes a 17.5% general corporate tax rate and zero rate on manufacturers. Ron Paul proposes 15% and Newt Gingrich 12.5%."
The real economy crusher, however, could be Obama's proposal to raise the tax on dividends from 15 percent to a staggering 44.8 percent. This money is first taxed as profit at the corporate rate before it can be paid in dividends, making the effective tax rate on this money more than 64 percent. Also, by tripling the dividend rate, many corporations will simply stop paying dividends as they did in the 1990s when the rate was roughly twice that on capital gains. Republicans cut both rates to 15 percent in 2003, and by 2006 dividend income had more than tripled. Obama's plan wouldn't just hurt the "rich," as the White House would lead us to believe. More than 100 million people are shareholders in the market, and three-quarters of dividend payments go to retirees or near-retirees. These tax increases would make everyone poorer.
Romney's tax plan is quite different. It has five points: reduce marginal individual income tax rates across-the-board by 20 percent; reduce the corporate rate to 25 percent; maintain the 15 percent rate on capital gains, interest and dividends for those earning more than $200,000 per year, while eliminating it for everyone else; abolish the death tax and the Alternative Minimum Tax; make the changes permanent, thus bringing much-needed stability to the tax code.
There is good and bad to his proposal. The bad is that Romney is still somewhat bound to the classism of the Democrats. For example, why play by their rules with capital gains or five individual rates? It's good that lower rates apply to everyone, though. The current top individual rate of 35 percent, which is set to skyrocket in 2013 to 41 percent (including the Democrats' surtax on the wealthy), would fall to 28 percent, the 33 percent rate to 26.4 percent, the 28 percent rate to 22.4 percent, the 25 percent rate to 20 percent, the 15 percent rate to 12 percent, and the 10 percent rate to 8 percent. Marginal rate cuts are by far the most economically effective tax cuts, but we would like to see fewer and even lower rates. The corporate rate should go lower, too. Flat or Fair tax, anyone?
Permanently eliminating the estate, or "death," tax -- often at least the third time that money is taxed -- is a great idea, as is casting the Alternative Minimum Tax on the ash heap of history. Also, making these changes permanent could do as much good for the economy as the rates themselves. As an aside, the proposal is good for Romney's candidacy because it gives him something to campaign for instead of merely citing his biography or attacking his opponents.
For the electorate, the competing tax visions provide a clear choice. As Ronald Reagan once put it, "You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down." Obama, with his wealth redistribution and class envy, advocates the way down. Romney's proposal, while far from perfect, provides a way up to greater prosperity for all.
What do you think of these tax proposals?
New & Notable Legislation
By comfortable margins, both chambers of Congress passed an extension of the payroll tax cut. The package extends the 2 percentage-point cut on Social Security taxes (reduced from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent) through the end of 2012 and continues to wave off previously agreed-upon cuts in doctors' Medicare compensation payments. It also tinkers with the federal unemployment insurance program to provide job-training opportunities and supplement some workers hit by drastic cuts in hours. The extension, which is not offset, will be a drain on the Social Security "trust fund" even though previous payroll tax cuts have provided no net gain for the economy. Republicans dropped their initial opposition to the extension because they didn't want to be accused of supporting a tax hike on workers. Barack Obama signed the bill with little fanfare, though he did take time to invite a few citizen-props to the White House -- those who went public with how the extra $40 in their paycheck has changed their lives.
Across the Pond: Britain to Partially Privatize Health Care
Little noticed by U.S. media beholden to Barack Obama and his takeover of our health care system is the recent decision by the British to begin partially privatizing their own government system. Prime Minister David Cameron introduced a bill to do just that because the British government is "hoping to avoid a Greek-style financial meltdown." The British media, unlike their American counterparts, aren't sitting on the sidelines. In fact, The Times of London quoted a Downing Street source saying that Health Secretary Andrew Lansley "should be taken out and shot" for supporting the effort. Whatever happened to advocating gun control over there?
The British system is legendary for its lengthy wait times and rationing of treatments, and it's still going broke. Leftists are up in arms (literally, if they take the aforementioned Downing Street advice) over supposed "cuts," too. Yet health care accounts for 18 percent of the UK's budget at $194 billion, and it will be about the same percentage at $200 billion in 2013. That's the same kind of "cut" Obama touts in his budget.
News From the Swamp: Reid Tempts Obama With Recess Appointments
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) encouraged Barack Obama to make some 90 recess appointments for nominees to various posts that have yet to be approved. Reid claims that the nominees could be approved at any point if Senate Republicans would "cooperate," meaning just shut up and do things his way. Several Republicans have refused flatly to support any nomination until the president rescinds his four non-recess appointments from December and puts them up for full advice and consent. Reid's response is simply more of the same cynical support for Obama's unconstitutional actions. Is it any wonder that he and his fellow do-nothing Senate Democrats haven't passed a budget in more than 1,000 days?
On the Campaign Trail: Santorum and Obama
Speaking on the campaign trail in Columbus, Ohio, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum argued that Barack Obama's actions aren't motivated by a concern for citizens' quality of life, but by his distorted worldview. "It's not about your job," Santorum said. "It's about some phony ideal, some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible, a different theology. But no less a theology." The media and the White House immediately accused Santorum of saying that Obama was not Christian, which is ridiculous because Santorum has stated the opposite publicly more than once.
That's not to say there aren't legitimate questions about the president's religion. His past statements about people "clinging" to religion, his sitting for 20 years in the pews of Jeremiah Wright, who shouted obscenities from the pulpit, and Obama's current attacks on the Catholic Church prove that he has, at best, no real respect for religion. But Santorum can't utter that truth on the campaign trail because it would surely do him more harm than good.
The bottom line is that Obama is a textbook narcissist, and he worships himself. Sure, he touts his so-called Christian faith, but only when it suits him to argue for wealth redistribution, ObamaCare or various other leftist "social justice" adventures. The president's real theological underpinnings come from the Church of Obama -- his own word is gospel and he is above reproach for his views and actions -- and it has many devoted followers in the media who have rushed to his defense, as Santorum has discovered.
Another Vacation for Michelle and the Kids
While the rest of us spent the long Washington's Birthday weekend working or plotting survival in a moribund economy, most of the First Family enjoyed the sun and slopes of Aspen. Along with a couple of family friends and the usual host of Secret Service agents, Michelle Obama and their two girls spent the weekend at the home of Aspen Skiing owners Jim and Paula Crown. The Crowns are old Chicago friends of the Obamas and -- naturally -- huge Democrat donors. With instructors in tow, the Obamas hit the slopes.
There's no question that public perception of the First Family as members of the out-of-touch "1 percent" increases with each lavish vacation; this is the sixteenth such trip Michelle has taken in the last three years. While most families are happy to take a week's summer vacation and, if they're lucky, maybe a couple of weekend getaways a year, the Obama family averages a ritzy outing about once every 10 weeks. Nice lack of work if you can get it.
How many vacations are too many?
Economy
Hope 'n' Change: High Gas Prices 'Aren't Obama's Fault'
Remember back in 2005 when the media reported soaring gas prices as unequivocally "Bush's fault"? No such blame for the president this time. Barack Obama denies responsibility, too, saying through his mouthpiece Jay Carney, "If you're suggesting that there is responsibility for a rise in the price of oil, it's certainly not because of anything [Obama] hasn't done to expand oil production." In fact, the president slammed Republicans Thursday for "licking their chops" over high gas prices and greeting this "bad news so enthusiastically."
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who as Speaker of the House was one of the first to blame President Bush for high gas prices, blames everyone but this president. "Wall Street profiteering, not oil shortages, is the cause of the price spike," Pelosi said. "Unfortunately, Republicans have chosen to protect the interests of Wall Street speculators and oil companies instead of the interests of working Americans by obstructing the agencies with the responsibility of enforcing consumer protection laws."
The energy industry sees things a bit differently. "These have been the most difficult three years from a policy standpoint that I've ever seen in my career," said Bruce Vincent, president of Houston-based oil and natural gas producer Swift Energy. He says the Obama administration has "done nothing but restrict access and delay permitting" and "has threatened this industry at every turn." Meanwhile, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz complains that Republicans and their oil buddies don't have a solution, because "all they would do is more and more drilling." Um, yeah. Increasing supply usually does lower the cost, but we wouldn't expect a Democrat to understand that.
How are you coping with skyrocketing gas prices?
Income Redistribution: Long-Term Unemployment Is Driving People Nuts
In the last half-decade since our economic picture dimmed considerably, the number of people who receive Social Security disability checks has increased to more than 10 million, including about two million spouses and children of disabled workers. All told, the Social Security disability program costs taxpayers more than $200 billion per year. The percentage of workers on disability has surged upward at a rate of nearly 20 percent, to the point that an unbelievable one out of every 19 Americans between the ages of 25 and 64 collects federal disability.
Perhaps recipients are more creative with their reasoning for collecting disability, as 43 percent of applicants are claiming mental illness -- up from 33 percent prior to the recession. Obviously, it's harder to determine if someone is faking illness if their scars are mental rather than physical. Since the beginning of the recession, around 1.9 million additional people have swelled the disability rolls, a significant part of the workforce decline in that same period.
This scheme also affects election-year politics because those who collect disability aren't considered part of the workforce, so those who go from collecting unemployment checks to taking disability payments help bring down the headline unemployment rate. According to a recent Gallup survey, though, unemployment is about to surge back to 9 percent. Gallup's previous mid-January figure mirrored the announced 8.3 percent rate the Obama administration and media trumpeted earlier this month. Again, that's not factoring in the newly disabled. This gravy train can't chug along forever -- the latest projections are that Social Security disability will run out of cash around 2018.
This Is Your Brain on Bailouts
Eurozone finance ministers authorized another bailout of Greece this week -- this one to the tune of roughly $170 billion -- to rescue the Mediterranean nation temporarily from default. This is the second major effort in this regard, and, unfortunately, it's unlikely to be the last.
The so-called "austerity" measures imposed by moneyed lenders in the European Union (EU) are virtually impossible for Greece to enact, short of suspending its constitution and imposing un-democratic "reform" measures. Most notable is the significant loss of sovereignty associated with increased EU financial oversight and direction. Additionally, any economic growth Greece achieves would be redirected solely toward debt pay-down, and the measures would also virtually require even more cuts in wages and jobs. Even these proposed reforms would only reduce Greece's debt to 120 percent or so of its GDP by 2020 -- in other words, the EU is throwing a gasoline-soaked sponge at a bonfire in hopes of putting it out.
Why give Greece a bailout in the first place? The answer is that the EU's 17-nation currency bloc sees the Grecian crack in the entire EU dike and hopes to plug it with a finger. Sadly, the EU is wrong. Like most savvy economists, we believe this deal merely prolongs the inevitable and will lead to an even deeper default eventually -- likely within months. If that happens and Greece is not decoupled from the Euro before defaulting, Greece will indeed be the tip of the iceberg.
The foundation of this problem is a Pollyannaish belief in getting something for nothing; that government-funded pensions are a birthright; that government spending has no bounds; that people are not ultimately responsible for their actions, either individually or collectively; and that wishing a problem would go away will actually make it go away. That's a lesson for America's governing elite, and we hope they get the memo before the bonfire hits U.S. shores.
Regulatory Commissars: UN Internet Regulation Proposed
Apparently bored with its stunning inability to maintain peace, enforce resolutions or prevent genocides, the United Nations is poised to embark upon another mission: global Internet takeover. Russia and China, among other nations, are pushing for a UN treaty that would institute international control over the Internet. Under the treaty, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency, would have jurisdiction over Web addresses and other Internet procedures; Internet security and privacy would be centrally controlled; international roaming rates would be globally regulated; users could be subject to fees for international Internet traffic, and more. If such a tyrannical grab at global power doesn't raise red flags (pun intended), it should.
Forget the fact that deregulation spawned the dynamic growth in Internet use, from 16 million to two billion users worldwide between 1995 and 2011. Forget that the Internet has helped create 2.6 new jobs for every one job lost because of Internet development. Forget that technology free of centralized control has led to explosions in commerce, communication and knowledge sharing. Some countries, feeling the world has moved to Intel while they were left in DOS, want a byte of the pie, too, and they want to launch a global cyber-grab to obtain it. Of course, any Web takeover would actually reverse the very growth the treaty seeks to capitalize. As The Wall Street Journal notes, "A top-down, centralized, international regulatory overlay is antithetical to the architecture of the Net, which is a global network of networks without borders." This treaty attempt should not be taken lightly. Indeed, if this new page in Internet control is allowed to load, hitting the "back" button won't be an option.
Internet Privacy
California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris reached an agreement with tech giants such as Google, Apple and Amazon this week that requires apps for mobile devices to have privacy policies. This is good election-year publicity because demanding privacy online is popular, but few actually read privacy policies, and even fewer actually do anything about unfavorable ones. Besides, these "fixes" won't do anything anyway.
The White House also issued guidelines dubbed a "Privacy Bill of Rights" -- a standard for how Web companies should handle user information. One staple is a "Do Not Track" feature within browsers that would prevent all compliant advertisers from tracking a user's activity. The administration is pushing Congress to pass legislation to codify such rights. Until then, the code is voluntary -- though we know how this administration often handles "voluntary" things.
Security
Iran Stirs Trouble, Obama Warns Israel
Iran announced this week that it would halt oil exports to Britain and France in retaliation for EU sanctions levied on Iran. Both European nations planned to begin boycotting Iranian oil on July 1 and thus will be largely unaffected, but world oil prices jumped as much as $2 a barrel following Iran's announcement.
Also, the International Atomic Energy Agency cut short a visit to Iran after being denied access to the Parchin Armaments Complex near Tehran. As predicted last week, Iran was interested only in talking to the IAEA, not cooperating in that agency's nine-year ordeal to verify Iran's allegedly "peaceful" use of nuclear energy. Ironic, then, that the deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on Wednesday that Iran would not back away from preemptive attack if it felt its nuclear program was threatened.
In response to this news, the Obama administration continued lobbying Israel not to attack Iran, while still sounding notes about a military option. U.S. Ambassador David Shapiro on Thursday reiterated that all options remain on the table, even saying the U.S. and Israel had coordinated and that "all necessary planning has been done to ensure those [military] options are available if at any time they become necessary." With the U.S. 5th Fleet never out of eyeball range from Iran's naval forces, and with several thousand American personnel in nearby Bahrain, Iranian retaliation following an Israeli strike is indeed a serious concern. Eventually Israel will come to the conclusion that it can wait no longer to strike -- if the United States has not led the rest of the world in securing Iran's compliance with its treaty obligations. The White House must put more pressure on Iran to comply than it puts on Israel to hold back and must above all lead in keeping the rest of the free world moving in the same direction on this issue.
Department of Military Correctness: Burning the Koran
A number of Korans were burned at the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan in what U.S. officials called an accidental trash disposal. Apparently, the Korans were confiscated from a detainee facility because they contained "extremist inscriptions" and were "being used to facilitate extremist communications." Predictably, many adherents to the Religion of Peace™ were outraged and surrounded the base in protest, threatening violence and the lives of American soldiers. Sure enough, an Afghan soldier killed two American soldiers, likely in retaliation, and Afghan President Hamid Karzai has demanded a trial for the American soldiers who burned the books.
Our nation's commander in chief responded swiftly ... by apologizing to the Afghan government. "I wish to express my deep regret for the reported incident," Obama wrote. "I extend to you and the Afghan people my sincere apologies." He concluded, "The error was inadvertent; I assure you that we will take the appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence, to include holding accountable those responsible." That is utterly outrageous but perfectly in step with Obama's history of bowing and apologizing to the rest of the world while flying the one-finger salute to our servicemen and women. He should demand an apology, not give one.
Share your thoughts on Obama and the Koran burning.
Department of Military Readiness: Military Buildup
Good news and bad news on the military budget front. The good news is that the military is now looking at an increase of $770 billion over the next decade. The bad news is that it's the Russian military. On Monday, Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that Russia must modernize its military in order to deter others from grabbing its resources. Putin, who faces a March 4 "election" to regain the Russian presidency, didn't name anyone specific who might have an eye on Russia's vast mineral wealth, though in the past he has accused the U.S. of threatening Russia. In light of what the Obama regime is doing to the U.S. military, he clearly shouldn't worry about that. We suppose he just has to have a bogeyman.
"We mustn't tempt anyone with our weakness," Putin said, using a well known axiom that Obama should take to heart. Reminiscent of the 1960s and 70s, Putin said that over the next decade Russia plans on spending about 23 trillion rubles ($770 billion dollars) for more than 400 intercontinental ballistic missiles, 600 combat aircraft, dozens of submarines and navy ships, and thousands of armored vehicles. Russia will develop weapons capable of penetrating any potential U.S. missile shield, as well as precision long-range non-nuclear weapons.
Russia's plans contrast with Obama's gutting of the U.S. military, with deep reductions in troops, aircraft, ships and other weapons systems -- all of which is also reminiscent of the 1970s when the second worst president in American history made deep cuts to the U.S. military and sullied the White House for one term. America needs to ensure that the worst president in American history follows that one-term example.
Illegal Alien From Morocco Charged in Bomb Plot
He was looking to assist al-Qa'ida in a war that he would then watch from paradise in the company of virgins. Instead, 29-year-old Amine El Khalifi faces life in prison for his plot to bomb the U.S. Capitol. The scheme was discovered in time for law enforcement to provide El Khalifi with a disabled automatic weapon and a suicide belt containing fake explosives. They arrested him this week well before he reached the Capitol grounds.
Moroccan Muslim El Khalifi was already a criminal for overstaying a 1999 visa originally secured when his family visited the United States. An informant tipped off the FBI in January 2011 after a meeting in which El Khalifi declared that the War on Terror was a war on Islam, and that the group needed to be "ready for war." His original intent was to open fire on a DC restaurant, but at some point the plan changed to one of a suicide bombing of the Capitol. According to the FBI, El Khalifi detonated a test bomb in a West Virginia quarry last month.

Judicial Benchmarks: Discrimination and DOMA
The Supreme Court decided this week to hear a challenge to race-based admission policies at the University of Texas. In 2003, the Court upheld -- until 2028 -- University of Michigan Law School rules that favored minorities in college admissions on grounds that diversity was desirable and beneficial. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor did not explain those benefits in detail in her majority opinion, but recent research indicates that minorities are worse off for these policies. In many cases, blacks either drop out because of a mismatch with a school, or they change their majors after having been admitted to fulfill quotas in particular majors.
The Constitution guarantees equal protection of the law, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 expressly forbids racial discrimination -- except, apparently, when it benefits certain "underrepresented" minorities. (Asian Americans, for example, typically perform very well in school and on college entrance tests, and are therefore discriminated against, along with whites.) Let's hope the Court ends this odious practice once and for all.
In other court news, a federal judge in San Francisco has ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional because it discriminates against same-sex married couples. The Obama Justice Department refused to defend the law, leaving it to a law firm hired by the House of Representatives. Discrimination based on race is clearly wrong in the above-cited University of Texas case. So-called discrimination based on the definition of an age-old institution -- marriage -- is not. Marriage means one man and one woman, no matter the courts' -- or the Maryland legislature's -- attempt to redefine it.
What's your take on these two court cases?
Faith and Family: Planned Parenthood's Hypocrisy
Planned Parenthood has demonstrated time and again that it will do anything to get its way, including trampling religious liberty. But its latest claim that a Virginia bill requiring pre-abortion ultrasounds is "akin to rape" has taken hypocrisy to new heights. Planned Parenthood already performs these ultrasounds before taking the life of a child.
Virginia legislators drafted HB 462 in response to several cases in which the absence of a pre-abortion ultrasound had horrific consequences for the patient. As a general rule, these are useful tests before any surgical procedure, because they alert the doctor to potential complications. They also predict the exact age of the baby, which could determine, among other things, the type of procedure needed. Planned Parenthood clearly outlined the protocol: Women seeking an abortion must undergo a health assessment, including blood work and an ultrasound.
Planned Parenthood's reaction only exposes it for what it truly is -- an organization that cares not about women but about its own bottom line. Now, along the way, it grievously insults rape victims with its comparison of ultrasound to rape.
This Week's 'Braying Jenny' Award
"[N]inety-eight percent of women in childbearing age who are Catholic use contraception. Ok, so in practice the church has not enforced this and now they want the federal government and private insurance to enforce it. It just isn't consistent to me." --Nancy Pelosi, on Obama's religious-liberty-crushing contraception mandate
Seven states filed suit against it Thursday.
'Occupy Our Homes' Destroys Those Homes
The Occupy Movement is the gift the keeps on giving. After trashing public parks around the country, it also inspired scads of spin-off movements, including "Occupy Our Homes." The initiative's goal is to break into foreclosed properties and renovate them for homeless families. Not surprisingly, the Occupiers' latest illegal enterprise was greeted by some as an altruistic idea. One such "Good Samaritan" was Brooklyn resident Wise Ahadzi. He and his family moved out of their East New York property after they were unable to make the mortgage payments. He had negotiated with the bank, but after hearing about Occupy Our Homes, he agreed to be part of the program. The Occupiers were to fix up the property in exchange for his activism.
We will never know the extent of these household improvements, however, because the house was completely destroyed by the very people the movement claims to help. A man who had been homeless until he was given the house ripped out the plumbing, stole the kitchen appliances and pulled up the carpeting. He also left trash strewn everywhere. Is he one of the "99 percent" the Occupiers keep blathering about? If so, we're in worse trouble than we ever imagined.
Canada to End Long-Gun Registry
In 1995, Canada's previous Liberal government enacted the Long Gun Registry Act in response to the Montreal massacre of 1989. As is usually the case with leftists, they overreacted to a lone individual's murderous rampage with firearms by punishing private, law-abiding gun owners. All long guns had to be registered by serial number and owner. The new Conservative government is acting to repeal the tyrannical boondoggle, though individual gun licenses will still be required, as will handgun registration. After 17 years, $2.7 billion and zero solved crimes, it's about time.
As well-known gun researcher John Lott wrote, "From 2003 to 2009, there were 4,257 homicides in Canada, 1,314 of which were committed with firearms. ... [T]he weapon was identified in fewer than a third of the homicides with firearms, and ... about three-quarters of the identified weapons were not registered. Of the weapons that were registered, about half were registered to someone other than the person accused of the homicide. In just 62 cases -- that is, only 4.7 percent of all firearm homicides -- was the gun registered to the accused. As most homicides in Canada are not committed with a gun, the 62 cases correspond to only about 1 percent of all homicides." Furthermore, "the registry was not important even in those cases. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Chiefs of Police have not yet provided a single example in which tracing was of more than peripheral importance in solving a case."
And Last...
One of the many problems with our Byzantine tax code is that citizens divide themselves into groups who want this or that tax cut, break or credit. In doing so, they seek a disastrous system of favoritism. The latest such group is the American Mustache Institute, which plans a "Million Mustache March" on Washington to rally for the passage of the "Stimulus To Allow Critical Hair Expenses," or STACHE Act. If enacted, this legislation would provide a $250 tax deduction for mustache grooming supplies. Of course, the march is planned for April Fools' Day, so we should probably take it for parody that it is. Next up: The Million Mullet March to insist on a tax break for those who grew mullets in high school and now need to pay for therapy.

Friday, February 24, 2012 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 256 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS Santorum Defies Conventional Wisdom The talking heads and party hacks keep insisting that Rick Santorum is only hurting himself when he talks about his pro-life values. They are wrong! Consider this from the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll:
"The Post/ABC poll, conducted on the heels of a week of scrutiny of Santorum's conservative views on a variety of women's health issues, shows that his popularity among GOP women has moved up 13 points since January, with the biggest bump in the past week, so that 57 percent hold a favorable view. ... Romney has higher negative ratings among GOP women than Santorum does - 28 percent to 18 percent - and those negative ratings of Romney have grown over time."
Obama Grovels To Our Enemies Again Barack Obama began his presidency by launching a world-wide apology tour, and he's still at it. Radical Islamists rioted in Afghanistan this week when word spread that U.S. troops at Bagram Air Force base had burned Korans. The Korans were disposed of after being confiscated from prisoners who were using them to spread jihadist messages. Al Qaeda and the Taliban are stoking the violence, urging Afghans to attack and kill westerners in revenge for "insulting the Holy Koran." So far, nearly two dozen people have been killed, including two U.S. soldiers. They were gunned down by a member of the Afghan Army who acted on the Taliban's advice to local security forces to "turn their guns on the foreign infidel invaders." Faced with such savagery, Barack Obama did what comes naturally to him -- he apologized. In a letter to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Obama expressed his "deep regret," extended his "sincere apologies" and promised to hold "accountable those responsible" -- referring not to the rioters and murderers but to the soldiers who burned the Korans. Adding insult to injury, this letter was delivered to Karzai on the same day our two soldiers were killed. I don't recall Obama apologizing to the Christians whose churches were firebombed by the radical Islamists in the new Egypt he helped to create. Where was Obama's apology for the Bibles that were burned in Afghanistan? It is the Afghan government that should be apologizing to us for the mobs in the streets who are so filled with hate and ignorance! These riots and the deaths that have resulted are further evidence that radical Islam has a problem with violence. Of course, Israelis know this all too well. But too many in the West simply cannot fathom it, and our own leaders are to blame. In the wake of 9/11 and the bombings in London, Madrid, Bali and Beslan, too many politicians rushed to tell us that terrorism had nothing to do with Islam. That is utter nonsense, akin to saying that World War II had nothing to do with fascism or Nazism. It has everything to do with Islam, and the terrorists admit it when they scream "Allahu Akbar" before blowing themselves up! Obama Has Gas Worries Among the biggest threats to the family budget right now are skyrocketing energy prices, and the White House is clearly worried. Yesterday, Obama flew to the key swing state of Florida, where motorists are feeling the pinch of some of the highest gas prices in the country. And what hope did the president give to struggling families? Virtually none. In fact, Obama actually mocked the idea of drilling for more oil. He told the audience, "Anybody who tells you that we can drill our way out of this problem doesn't know what they're talking about, or just isn't telling you the truth." The American people aren't stupid, and I suspect they know who isn't telling them the truth. They know that the gas they put in their cars comes from oil, and they know that oil comes from drilling. Yes, it really is that simple. And this White House has been the most hostile administration in history to our domestic energy industry. Yet more and more experts believe that U.S. energy independence is possible in the next ten years if -- and it is a big if -- Obama and his radical environmentalist allies aren't calling the shots. Unfortunately, Obama thinks we are stupid. He's made this statement before, but he repeated it again yesterday:
"In 2010, our dependence on foreign oil was under 50 percent for the first time in over a decade. We were less reliant on foreign oil than we had been. In 2011, the United States relied less on foreign oil than in any of the last 16 years. That's the good news."
Not really. We are using less foreign oil mainly because Obama's economy stinks. And that is not good news -- unless your real goal is to boost dependency in order to grow the government and justify a "fundamental transformation" of America into a socialist welfare state. But I digress... Obama did offer one solution: He wants to double down on bad bets like Solyndra and algae. Yes, algae. So, Obama wants to raise taxes on oil companies in order to invest in algae. Did anyone drive to work today in their algae-powered car? We've had the failed stimulus bill, ObamaCare and yet another budget with a trillion-dollar deficit. Is it too much to ask that one of Obama's policies be grounded in reality? My friends, I could go on for pages, but I won't. For more on this critically important issue, click here, here and here. You are going to be bombarded with a lot of misinformation in the next 256 days. Don't fall for it. Don't let your friends and family members fall for it either. The stakes are too high. Obama can be beaten. Voters want ObamaCare repealed and they want spending cut. They know we can't afford another four years of Barack Obama! The Democrats' Radical Agenda If you need more evidence of the Democrats' radical agenda, consider the issue of same-sex "marriage." In recent days, three Democrat-dominated state legislatures -- Maryland, New Jersey and Washington State -- have approved laws allowing men to "marry" other men. In New Jersey, Republican Governor Chris Christie vetoed the bill and offered to put it on the ballot so the people could decide. No doubt fearful that the issue might backfire on them at the ballot box, Democrat leaders refused. Meanwhile, pro-family groups are working to organize ballot challenges to the laws in Maryland and Washington State. While some Republicans may want a "truce" on values issues, it is clear that the Democrats intend to fight and win the culture war. Conservatives need to fight back! There are bigger issues at stake, including religious liberty.
