The Unknown History of Civil Rights

By Wynton Hall |2/4/2008

Black History Month is about informing citizens of the hurdles and heroes of America's climb toward civil rights and equality. How interesting, then, that so many race-related political myths continue to be perpetuated by Democrats who know better.

Consider the recent fracas over Senator Hillary Clinton's contention that President Lyndon Johnson was the driving force behind the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As any fair examination of history reveals, a large share of the legislative credit for the bill's passage must go to that other senator from Illinois-Republican Minority Leader Everett Dirksen.

Just look at the historical record. As Lyndon Johnson told Hubert Humphrey: "Now you know that bill can't pass unless you get Ev[erett] Dirksen."

Indeed, LBJ biographer Robert Caro notes that prior to 1957, Johnson "had never supported civil rights legislation-any civil rights legislation," including anti-lynching legislation. His private behavior toward blacks was appalling. Robert Parker, LBJ's longtime black employee and limousine chauffeur, claims that Johsnon blasted him daily with a blizzard of bigoted slurs. And even as LBJ was being praised by liberals for his appointment of Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court, behind closed doors LBJ's cynical brand of "identity politics" became clear. As presidential historian Robert Dallek recounts, LBJ explained his decision to a staff member by saying, ""Son, when I appoint a nig-r to the court, I want everyone to know he's a nig-r."

Still, despite his record and rhetoric, LBJ fought hard to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But those he had to fight against were Democrats, not Republicans. Democrats like former Klansman Senator Robert C. Byrd and others launched a filibuster to kill the Civil Rights bill. The chances of stopping them seemed bleak. Never in the history of the United States Senate had members mustered enough votes to stop a filibuster (a procedure known as "cloture" that requires 67 votes to invoke) on a civil rights bill.

Are We in the Midst of World War III? Beck Thinks So After His Eye-Opening Trip to Rome, Athens...

The Blaze | by Tiffany Gabbay | Posted on February 20, 2012 at 11:52pm

GreeseOne of the main points that Glenn took from his weekend in Europe was the overriding sense that we are currently in the middle of World War III. This time, however, the war is being fought with financial weapons of mass destruction and the goal is to attain power, money and influence. Below is a clip from Monday's GBTV program in which Glenn explains the role that Middle East and oil will play in the conflict ahead. Hear why Glenn is frightened by this international battle:

The bad news is last month some well intentioned political activist announced a cut-off date for signing up co-sponsors for Rep. Rose Marie Swanger's American Law's for American Courts (HB 2029) in an effort to inject some urgency into the effort.

What it resulted in was an interruption of the campaign to encourage those Representatives not yet signed on as co-sponsors to join with those Legislators who have already recognized the death by smothering threat to our Constitution.

The good news is there is no cut-off date for adding co-sponsors and we are once again asking your readers to contact their representatives and ask they join the battle.

There are only three Representatives from Bucks who are co-sponsors, Representatives Clymer, Petri and Quinn and we thank them for showing their colors.

But that leaves seven more Representatives who appear to be still standing on the sidelines as the battle for our existence as a free people is joined.

Lame rhetoric? I'm afraid not. If you do not understand the threat we face from 'peaceful' opportunists like CAIR, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bucksafa11info/messages or contact me at bucksafa11@yahoo.com to schedule an Open the Koran presentation for you and your friends.

If you're ready to help, visit www.actforamerica.org and sign on as a chapter leader. It's free and the people there are friendly and helpful. Your help is needed. Every township, every neighborhood needs an Act! for America chapter leader.

But before you do anything, if your Pennsylvania Representative has not yet ssigned on as co-sponsor, urge her/him to do so and ask what is it that prevents him/her from doing so.

Help Pennsylvania be counted among those States that have shown the courage to face off with the enemies who have plainly stated their aim is to destroy our Nation. Our laws have worked just fine since colonial times. What is needed are politicians who respect them. And you know whose job it is to remind them of that.

Thanks,

John Ryan

Americans for Prosperity

hand off jy health care!March 23rd, 2012, marks an important and unfortunate anniversary. It will have been exactly two years since President Obama forced his unpopular health care takeover onto the American people. Americans for Prosperity has educated the public about the dangers of government interference in the health care market for the past several years, and now the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments and make a ruling on that very issue. As you are most likely aware, the U.S. Supreme Court will be considering the constitutionality of several elements of the President's health care bill. This may be our best chance to overturn this offense against our health care freedoms. That's why Americans for Prosperity will be hosting a Hands Off My Health Care rally for free-market grassroots activists from across the country at the Supreme Court on March 27th. Thomas Jefferson: "Whensoever the general government assumes undelegated powers....a nullification of the act is the rightful remedy."

But what IS nullification? How does it happen and work? Since September 2010, the Tenth Amendment Center has been hosting a national tour to educate and activate people on this topic. People are learning the constitutional basis, when it's been used in history, and how it is happening around the country and how YOU can stop DC right in your own state.

The Heritage Foundation The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress

A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress

Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:

  • Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
  • Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
  • Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care

The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

Lou Flanagan, House Bill 934: Voter ID

"My state Rep. Warren Kampf responded to my question about where the Voter ID bill stands in Harrisburg. His response appears at end of this emaiI. It seems clear that unless we apply pressure to the state senate government committee, this bill will go nowhere.
My questions for them are: Where do you stand on the bill? What are you doing to move it out of committee? If you oppose it, tell me why. Who on the committee is against it, and why?

Louis:
Thank you for the email regarding Voter ID (House Bill 934).
The House passed Voted ID on June 23rd. I voted for this bill if you will remember. It is now the responsibility of the Senate to take action to continue to move HB 934 forward.
I would advise you to contact the Senators who comprise the Senate State Government Committee, those in Senate leadership positions and your local Senator to let them know of your desire to move this forward. Also you may ask for an accounting of why this has been held up and not considered.
Please let me know if I can help with other state-related matters.

Voter Cheating

You know, comrades," says Stalin, "that I think in regard to this: I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this - who will count the votes, and how. (Boris Bazhanov's Memoirs of Stalin's Former Secretary,1992, only available in Russian.
Russia's Vladimir Putin is accused of voter fraud and failure to solve problems with health care availability, immigration control, and unsustainable pensions. Sound familiar? Absolutely. Will he lie? Absolutely. But unlike Obama's ACORN, he will probably admit it.

Background

There are several lines of independent evidence for cheating in the 2012 election:

a)     12/30/11, Voter ID: PA House Bill 934

Eric Holder has ordered his staff not to meddle with cases of voter fraud that involve minorities (J. Christian Adams has written widely about such cases), Salina Zito (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review) predicted that PA in November '12 will go according to the Philadelphia suburbs, ACORN has both a record for voter scams and operates new sites in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, our State Attorney General is stepping aside, and there is little public information about Mayor Nutter's views on this matter. Meanwhile, there is an early February deadline from our Governor as Republicans in the PA legislature attempt to define a list of acceptable IDs and Democrats cry that minorities and old people can't handle this demand.
I smell more fraud from a bunch- ACORN - already known nationally for fraud and Corbett's February deadline invites some deliberate lapse by the D's...And intrusion by Eric Holder would stall our ID program until after ACORN has done their job for BO ...

b)     Jeffrey Kuhner, Washington Times: BO & Voter ID

"...South Carolina's legislation provides for free ID cards to be given to anyone who needs it. Not one person - white, black or brown - is discriminated against or discouraged from casting a vote at the ballot box. Moreover, the Supreme Court already has ruled on the issue - upholding state voter ID laws. In the 2008 Crawford v. Marion County Election Board decision, the high court held that an Indiana law mandating photo identification at the voting booth was indeed constitutional. If it is good enough for the Supreme Court and the overwhelming majority of the states, then it should be for Mr. Holder as well.
"It isn't. And the reason is simple: The administration is trying to whip up minority frenzy, propagating the myth of widespread ballot suppression..."

c)      Daryl Metcalf, Morning Call: Electoral Integrity (June 18, 2011)

Metcalf is a Republican from Butler County (north of Pittsburgh)
"Pennsylvania has a long and ongoing history of documented voter fraud - pre-dating even the frequently forged signature of Mickey Mouse to at least the election of 1918.
"Of course, no statewide analysis of voter fraud would be complete without briefly documenting the deeply rooted influence of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

d)     Christopher Freind, PA Water Cooler:  No ID, No Vote,... Comprende? (June 21, 2011)

"I am not wealthy, but have recently acquired twenty two domiciles throughout Philadelphia. My real estate prowess has afforded me a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our citizens.
"I can vote twenty-two times.
"You see, I have staked out prime locations, from a cardboard box under the Walt Whitman Bridge to a culvert on Cobbs Creek Parkway to a burnt out shell at 7th and Diamond. Yes, technically, habitating at these locations makes me 'homeless,' but I much prefer the term 'voter-enfranchised.' When you have such a love of democracy, how can anyone have a problem with people who want to vote multiple times, especially the homeless? (Although, in fairness, dead people should only be able to vote once).
http://pawatercooler.com/v3/?tag=philadelphia-voter-fraud

e)     11/7/2011, PA ACORN Lives

"Pennsylvania. ACORN PA has become Pennsylvania Communities Organizing for Change (PCOC) and Pennsylvania Neighborhoods for Social Justice (PNSJ).Both were incorporated on January 8, 2010. On July 26, 2010, PCOC filed for another name - Action United - and the organizations now operate under this name. Current board members and staff of these organizations with former ACORN affiliations include:
* Lucille Prater Holliday, chair (ACORN member and Democratic state house candidate)
* Pat Worrell, co-chair (Chester County, PA ACORN chairman)
* Rosa Chacon, secretary/treasurer (ACORN leader in Harrisburg, PA, profiled in
ACORN's 2005 annual report)
* Fabrico Rodriguez, board member (executive director of Philadelphia Jobs with
Justice)
* Craig Robbins, executive director (ACORN regional director in Philadelphia, PA)
* Maryellen Deckard, southwest regional director (head organizer for ACORN PA)
* Jennifer England, communications director (Pittsburg ACORN spokesperson)
Action United is located  at 846 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130 and 5907 Penn Avenue, Pittsburg(h), PA 15206. The Action United website is www.actionunited.org.
http://www.judicialwatch.org/files/documents/2011/acornspecialreport08222011.pdf

There is even a Secretary of State project in which leftist groups attempt to bias state elections so that "liberal" Secretaries of State are elected. http://truethevote.org/news/does-your-vote-really-count; http://truethevote.org/news/what-is-the-secretary-of-state-project.
There must be some benefit to Republicans if they ignore voter fraud. For example, my acquaintance publishes lists of Republicans who take contributions from unions and refusing to vote against union interests. And conservative Lowman Henry has spoken about the legislative impasse, particularly in the State Senate, produced by about twenty-five who get their money from organized labor.
Thus, Nicole Marrone's conclusion is still valid as is Christopher Freind's:
"The city of Philadelphia is known for many things: The Liberty Bell, cheesesteaks, water ice, and Santa Claus-booing Eagles fans. But if research that I conducted in 2006 is still accurate today, Philadelphia should also be known for all-inclusive voting - that is, voting regardless of whether one has a pulse or is otherwise eligible to cast a vote..." http://pjmedia.com/blog/small-sample-of-philly-voter-rolls-reveals-hundreds-of-ineligible-names-pjm-exclusive/
There is a bright light on our horizon even though Salena Zito asserted that Pennsylvania electoral votes will depend on turn out in the Philadelphia suburbs:

"Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter didn't mince words after four kids were shot and three killed in Philadelphia Tuesday night.
"The first way to stop this kind of stuff is for young people to be home when they're supposed to be home, and for adults not to act like idiots and assholes out in the streets of our city shooting at kids in a car," Nutter told FOX 29...
A spokesperson for the mayor told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Nutter stood by his statement.
"He said what he said. He was clear about it, and he meant it. He said what everybody else was thinking," said spokesman Mark McDonald..."
http://dailycaller.com/2012/01/12/philly-mayor-dont-act-like-idiots-and-assholes/

What are Mayor Mike's reactions to fraud? Does he value "value" above "deals"?
Meanwhile, many Pennsylvanians look to Harrisburg to pass a "Voter ID" law that requires each of us to carry a card with our photo and address on it. Our Governor also says that he needs the law in place by the first week of February if it is to be used this coming November.
On the other hand, I recall my son's friends in college fattening their wallets by selling bogus photo ID to students who wanted to buy liquor. I'm sure ACORN knows how to do such things.
The ID cards will make cheating a bit more difficult and more expensive for organizers and possibly, but not necessarily, less frequent. And the rest of us will pay the bills for cheaters...

PA implementing ObamaCare exchanges

I wanted to update you on the exchange situation.  First, unfortunately we are getting started late in the game.  Having spoken with 4 different legislators (Rep Saylor, Boyd, Bear, and Sen Waugh), I believe the general sense on their part is that they want to be prepared to set up an exchange if SCOTUS doesn't  declare ObamaCare unconstitutional.

Their reasoning for supporting the exchange is that PA will have more control if PA sets up the exchange rather than the feds.  We have been arguing that in fact: the exchange structure and operation is dictated by the feds, through law and regulation, regardless if the state sets it up or not; that whatever little "control" a PA would have does not mitigate any of the true horrors of the law; establishing the exchange legitimizes PPACA and undercut PA's federal lawsuit against PPACA, creates more PA expense and government, scedes state sovereignty, misses an opportunity to block the law and to have standing for further legal action.  (please see attached documents if you want more explanation).

We have more legislator visits planned, but it is clear to me that none of the legislators thus far will take on this fight.  We must generate the grass roots response to move them to do so.  It is disgusting that our Republican Governor and legislature can't pass meaningful right to work legislation, LCB reform, PA TPK Commission reform, school reform, etc but unless we respond in a big way, will make PA government bigger, make PA government poorer, harm PA citizen liberty and health by implementing an exchange.

I have contacted Campaign for Liberty to see if they are interested in coordinating efforts to stop the exchange.  I will also contact the PA Manufacturer's Association and the Chamber of Commerce, both of whom support repeal of PPACA, also for potential coordination of activities.

We are working on an on-line petition rejecting PPACA and the exchanges for PA physicians to sign and ultimately deliver by several physicians to Harrisburg.

On Wednesday, I participated in a debate put on by the Lehigh Valley Coalition for Health Care Reform (Donna Rovito).  Leo Knepper and I presented the anti-exchange positition while a rep from the PA Dept of Insurance and Dr Schmeltz of the PA Medical Society presented the for pro position.  For what it is worth, I believe we had the more compelling argument.

I welcome any thought you all have.

This exchange is going to happen unless we act together in a big way.

We have an amazing opportunity before us today, to score a BIG WIN for taxpayers and small businesses...but we can't do it without your help!

Please click here to send an email to your Representative and tell him or her to vote yes on the prevailing wage reform bills before the House today!

At 1pm, our PA Legislators are voting to amend the prevailing wage laws that have long favored unions and hurt working families and small businesses!

Could you please email your legislator right now and ask him or her to vote YES on two prevailing wage reform bills: H.B. 1329 ("Threshold") and H.B. 1685 ("Jobs Classification")?

Our politicians must not only hear from the unions...they must hear from YOU and I...the people who bear the burden of paying for these bills!

Here's a quick overview of the bills:

The "Jobs Classification Bill" will require Pennsylvania to define job classifications on public works projects. The lack of definitions has been used by some unions to attack and file frivolous grievances against small business owners, costing Pennsylvania jobs and tax dollars.

The "threshold bill" will end the artificially low estimated cost of total project from $25,000 to conform to the Consumer Price Index of the previous calendar year. The current amount was based on the 1963 Consumer Price Index and allowed prevailing wage to kick in at too low a threshold making it a costly endeavor for school districts and municipalities to fund minor projects.

Will you please ask your legislator to vote "YES" to H.B. 1329 ("Threshold") and H.B. 1685 ("Jobs Classification")? Don't miss this chance to score a win for the taxpayers and small businesses of Pennsylvania!

Thank you for all your hard work!

In Liberty and Solidarity,

Jennifer Stefano

PS - These two bills are going on our legislative scorecard and every Representative will be graded on their vote.

Union Lackey Republicans

This week, relatively modest reforms of Pennsylvania's existing prevailing wage laws was scuttled by a group of pro-union Republicans, who joined with House Democrats to defeat the proposal. These Republican UNION LACKEYS denied schools and local governments the ability to help lower construction costs by avoiding costly prevailing wage requirements on smaller projects.

These UNION LACKEYS are:

Steve Barrar (Delaware)
Gene Digirolamo (Bucks)
Jim Marshall (Beaver)
Tom Murt (Montgomery)
Mark Mustio (Allegheny)
Bernie O'Neill (Bucks)

We have an opportunity to send a message to two of these Republican UNION LACKEYS who are being primaried by free market supporters in the upcoming primary. Please consider supporting these two candidates that are mounting a primary challenge to two union funded Republicans.

Mark Mustio (Allegheny) is running for both the Senate against D. Raja

Bernie O'Neill (Bucks) may be the most liberal Republican in the House. Bernie voted for EVERY weakening amendment to the Bill before blocking the vote.  His opponent is Gloria Carlineo

RedState Morning Briefing

1. Principle as Political Liability

What a weird campaign season we are having. Let me present you a truth that some of you may bristle under, but is true nonetheless.

No matter how right the cause or principle, it may still be a political liability.

I'll start with the one you'll agree with it. Barack Obama and many on the left may believe that abortion . . . er . . . um . . . "women's health except for mammograms, pap smears, and the like - contraception only -" is a fundamental right necessitating the Catholic Church foregoing its own tenets and forced to give out free birth control pills and abortifacient drugs, but those who agree are deluding themselves that it will not also be a political liability.

Let's try another one. Barack Obama and the Democrats may believe that socializing healthcare in this country is the right and proper thing to do, but it has also been proven to be a political liability.

How about this one: God bless Mitt Romney for being a capitalist's capitalist making millions on Wall Street, but it will be a huge political liability in November.

Oh, one more. Come on! Rick Santorum may be absolutely right on the principles of morality and social decay in this country, but it will be a political liability with independent voters.

The funny thing is that many of you on the left who read the first two were shaking your heads in absolute disagreement and then agreeing with the latter two. Those of you on the right had the opposite reaction.

Partisans typically do. It is for level headed strategists, consultants, and pundits to try their best to overcome their partisan world views and accept reality. Some things you and I may love about a candidate may actually be real political liabilities for that candidate in a general election.

2. New Debt Limit Brings New Opportunity for Cut, Cap, Balance

When Republicans agreed to raise the debt ceiling last year, not only did they credit Obama's credit card by $2.1 trillion, they also gave him a lifeline until after the election. At the time, it was projected that $2.1 trillion in new debt allowance was sufficient to last until January 2013, sparing Obama the embarrassment of raising the debt ceiling right before the election. Well, it appears that we've blown through the new debt so quickly that we might bump up against the $16.394 trillion debt ceiling before November 2012.

Last week, Senator Rob Portman released an analysis showing that we will reach the debt ceiling before the end of the fiscal year.

3. The Stimulus Chart Obama Doesn't Want You to See

Note from Erick: Yes, this is a repeat from yesterday, but it is too important to ignore.
Three years ago today, President Obama signed his infamous stimulus package into law. In exchange for $1.2 trillion (including interest), liberals said their plan would bring the unemployment rate down to about 6% today. It hasn't fallen below 8% at any point in the last 36 months.

There has been a recent drop, though, which some Democrats claim as proof that their stimulus plan finally worked. But if that's true, then where are the jobs?

1. The Last Debate?

Today is a holiday here at RedState, but I'm doing laundry, packing, and preparing to fly out to Arizona.

On Wednesday night, CNN will bring the nation what may very well be the last debate in the Republican Presidential Primary season. From Mesa, AZ, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, and Ron Paul will take the stage one last time.

At least we can presume it will be the last time. Romney, Santorum, and Paul bailed on the pre-Super Tuesday debate that would have been hosted by both CNN and the Georgia Republican Party in Atlanta.

So this may be the last bite at the apple for Newt Gingrich to rebound, Santorum to throw Romney off his game, and for MItt Romney himself to maybe help himself with a base that still is not in love. Tune in Wednesday for the CNN Debate starting at 8pm ET live from Mesa, AZ. And stick around afterwards. I'll be part of the post-game commentary at this most likely last debate of the primary season.

3. No 'Lone Wolf': FBI Sting Nabs Would-be Capitol Suicide Bomber who Thought he was Working with al Qaeda

On Friday, Feb. 17, a long-term FBI sting operation culminated in the arrest of a would-be terrorist while he was en route to the U.S. Capitol to carry out a suicide bombing. Amine el Khalifi, a 29-year-old Muslim from Morocco who entered the U.S. with his parents on a trip to Disney World 1999 and illegally overstayed his tourist visa by over a decade, had been on the FBI's radar since early 2011, during which he was "closely and carefully monitored," according to a law enforcement spokesperson. Over this period, Khalifi's planned target and method changed several times (from bombing a synagogue, to targeting an American general officer, to blowing up a building known to contain some DOD offices, to targeting a crowded restaurant frequented by high-ranking military personnel, to a suicide attack on the U.S. Capitol), his ultimate goal of carrying out a terrorist attack on American soil remained the same.

Thanks to the FBI's efforts (in particular, its undercover assets who engaged Khalifi over the long term), when Khalifi finally set out to commit the terrorist act he had been preparing for, law enforcement officials were able to make sure that he did so with inert explosives in his suicide vest. Khalifi was ultimately arrested en route from a mosque, where he had been praying before his attack, to the U.S. Capitol.

Because Khalifi intended to carry out this suicide attack alone, media are falling back on one of their favorite misnomers - 'Lone Wolf' - to describe him. This is as predictable as it is wholly incorrect, as even a brief glance at the criminal complaint filed against Khalifi shows.

4. Yes Virginia, There Is a Baby in There

The Virginia state legislature is fast becoming the nation's leader in fighting the abortion holocaust. Last summer abortion clinics were required to meet standards appropriate to a medical facility rather than those resembling a chicken factory. A personhood bill is moving forward which will recognize what anyone who passed high school biology already knows, that a fetus is a separate and distinct human being. But the bill that has the left in a tizzy is one that strikes directly at the market for the abortionists' sales pitch: women who have just discovered they are pregnant. As a result the Virginia GOP is being treated just by the abortion lobby the same way a rehab clinic operator would be treated by drug pushers.

The bill is pretty straight forward.

5. Did Fred Hiatt Change the Mission and Just Not Tell Anyone?

Conservatives have come to expect liberal organizations to hire purported "conservatives" to cover the conservative movement in a way that self-affirms liberal notions of conservative neanderthal-ism.

But there is a problem in Jennifer Rubin covering conservatives at the Washington Post. According to the Post's ombudsman, Patrick Pexton, editorial page editor Fred Hiatt hired Rubin "to be an opinion blogger who would appeal to conservatives and people who want to follow conservative politics. She does." . . . .

Yesterday, Jennifer Rubin discovered that Rick Santorum is a devout Catholic and, through leaps of logic that would defy Cirque Du Soleil, arrives at a laughable conclusion not in evidence that puts a big spotlight on her understanding of devout Catholics - a core constituency in the modern conservative movement, particularly inside the beltway no less.

6. NLRB Staff Union Claims Pro-Union NLRB Bosses Have Declared War on NLRB Employees

When discussing the National Labor Relations Board and its pro-union slant these days, few realize that the staff within the NLRB is also unionized.

In fact, according to the National Labor Relations Board Union, the union represents over 950 NLRB attorneys, examiners and support staff. It is these individuals, along with their bosses within the NLRB, who are charged with remaining neutral in employer-union disputes-which makes it all the more interesting when the NLRB's union charges NLRB management with "trying to destroy their employees' union."

According to a flyer distributed by the NRLBU, NLRB Chairman Mark Pearce (a union attorney) and Acting General Counsel Lafe Solomon have declared war on NLRB attorneys.

7. State Department Promoting "Gasland", Other Enviro Films To Foreign Audiences

In a true "what the frack" moment, the State Department, in association with the USC School of Cinematic Arts, has included the film Gasland in a list of 29 films to be showcased around the globe as part of an "international cultural diplomacy initiative". The initiative, called "The American Film Showcase", takes a panel of directors, film experts, and assorted talking heads to events the world over to screen the selected films and discuss them.

Gasland, you may recall, made quite a splash for the now famous scene featuring flammable tap water. The film (we hesitate to use the term "documentary" so loosely) is an opus to anti-natural gas drilling, and uses the fears of families about their drinking water to great dramatic effect. However, the infamous flammable tap water turns out not to have anything to do with "fracking", despite what filmmaker Josh Fox would have audiences believe. That scene, that most pivotal scene, is not what it appears to be. As our own Steve Maley has pointed out, both the Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, among others, have debunked Fox's claim.

Start a rumor:

REM's 1991 hit "Losing My Religion" was a veiled, deeply personal account by singer/songwriter Michael Stipe of how it feels, after a lifetime as a Democrat, suddenly to realize that your liberal ideals are a crock and you've been a secret conservative all your life.

Stipe has been a closeted member of the Republican Party since 1991 and is in fact chairman of the highly secretive Republicans for Rock branch, whose membership allegedly also includes Ted Nugent, Snoop Dogg, Brandon Flowers, Lady Gaga, and Jon Bon Jovi. The personal happiness he has experienced as a result of his change of political heart has unfortunately resulted in a dramatic falling-off in the quality of his music. Artists need pain and misery to produce great work. It is no coincidence that REM's classic Automatic for the People album was recorded while Stipe was involved in a bitter power struggle with the late Gianni Versace for the presidency of the National Rifle Association (Gay Men's Branch).

Hillsdale College

The U.S. Constitution

A Reader

Featuring 113 primary source documents, The U.S. Constitution: A Reader was developed for teaching the core course on the U.S. Constitution at Hillsdale College.

Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.

About Hillsdale College

Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."

Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs.

Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012.

Showdown in Syria
The architects of the Libyan disaster in France, the UK, the United States and Qatar have decided that Syria is the next step in replacing dictators with Muslim Brotherhood allied "democratic" parties. But no matter how eager they are to roll the Arab Spring forward with a month of bombing raids, this won't be a relative cakewalk like Syria.

Gaddafi isolated Libya through his own craziness and then his alliance with the West, which left him with no friends when Sarkozy, Cameron and Obama turned on him in the name of Arab Democracy. Assad is often described as isolated because the Arab League has taken a firm stand against him, but he has a firm ally in Iran, which has few options and is likely to do whatever it takes to keep him in power.

Next up is Russia, which has lost most of its Middle Eastern allies and doesn't have that many options besides Syria, where it has a naval base and any number of secret and not so secret outposts. That will provide a pipeline of advanced technology, including the kind that can endanger NATO planes. While that isn't likely to lead to any serious casualties, an attack on Syria will allow Russia to test out some of its latest technology against our aircraft. Just as Iraq provided a testing ground for some advanced Russian technology.

And there's one more catch. The wildly unpopular Russian government might just be itching for a small scale conflict, especially one with the United States. A few planes lost on both sides and the Russians can claim victory. It wouldn't be a particularly smart move by Moscow from our point of view, but from the point of view of a government that only rules due to massive fraud and force, a heavy dose of patriotism for the motherland might be just what the spin doctor ordered. A direct confrontation between Russian and NATO planes would be a milestone for Russia's recovery and a way to wash away the shame of Yugoslavia and Pristina Airport.

Even if the Russians don't fly under their own colors, that doesn't mean they won't fly. The Israelis shot down plenty of Russian advisers who were flying as Syrians and Egyptians. Russia might be satisfied with counting coup and testing out some of their new hardware that way.

Blogger banned from left wing Daily Kos after questioning Islam

  • By Joe Newby, Spokane Conservative Examiner

File this under "liberal tolerance."

After publishing his concerns over a mega-mosque in Tennessee, Eric Allen Bell found himself banned from the left wing blog Daily Kos.

Bell is currently producing a documentary entitled "Not Welcome" about the backlash against the construction of a 53,000 square foot "mega-mosque" in Murfreesboro, Tennessee - a town that has very few Muslims.

At the same time, he was invited to write articles for wealthy filmmaker Michael Moore and the progressive blog Common Dreams. He also wrote over 100 articles for the Daily Kos.

But toward the end, he wrote some articles that got him in trouble - both with a website called loonwatch.com and with the Daily Kos.

On Monday, a post at Jihad Watch noted:

Facebook shuts down pro-life message

After allowing do-it-yourself abortion instructions to be posted

WND | by Dave Tombers | Posted on February 19, 2012

Prominent pro-life advocate Bryan Kemper is questioning Facebook after it removed his pro-life message, a move that followed on the heels of the company's decision to allow the posting of directions on how to perform an abortion at home.

Just last month, the popular social media site issued an apology to Rebecca Gomperts for temporarily censoring her do-it-yourself abortion instructions she had posted as her profile picture.

Liberals' recent victories fuel Santorum surge

Conservatives must recognize the cultural war being waged and engage it with clarity and aggressiveness that matches that of the left.

A succession of high-profile left-wing decisions and initiatives in recent weeks drive home the extent to which the left is changing the face of America.

Notable among these are the decision by a federal appeals court in California to uphold a lower court's finding of the state's Proposition 8 -- defining marriage as between a man and a woman -- as unconstitutional; the Susan G. Komen foundation reversing its decision, after a tsunami of left-wing pressure, to withdraw funding from Planned Parenthood; and the Obama administration refusing to grant a religious exemption from the new health care law's employer mandate requiring provision of free contraception and sterilization services as part of coverage.

These developments are, I think, helping to buoy the newly surging candidacy of Rick Santorum, former senator from Pennsylvania.

Why?

Santorum stands out in the current Republican field in the clarity of his image and identity. There is little doubt about who the man is, and there are no glaring inconsistencies between who he says he is today and his past behavior and positions.

Poor George Washington. His birthday, spontaneously celebrated since the Revolution and formally declared a holiday in 1879, has slowly morphed into the insipid Presidents Day you'll hear about today.

George Washington, the "indispensable man" of the Revolution who was rightly extolled for being "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen," has now been lumped together with the likes of James Buchanan, Jimmy Carter, Franklin Pierce and John Tyler.

It gets worse. Washington's good name and great legacy are now shamelessly invoked to justify positions that he would never have envisaged.

In a Time Magazine special edition on George Washington currently in newsstands, historian Joseph Ellis matter-of-factly remarks: "He began the political tradition that produced a Union victory in the Civil War, the Federal Reserve Board, Social Security, Medicare and, more recently, Obamacare."

Leaders With Ginni Thomas

Andrew Breitbart, A Revolutionary Leader The Left Abhors

Dear patriots,

What a privilege I had to interview Andrew Breitbart last week when he was in town for CPAC!

As the institutional and organized left works to transform this nation, Mr. Breitbart is a modern day Paul Revere -- a man on a mission for his country and for truth. Following entrepreneurial milestones left by Rush Limbaugh and Matt Drudge, Breitbart's unique niche is exposing media bias and fighting political correctness in the public square while helping citizens become educated and activated to come to the defense of their nation.

Breitbart spoke to me about stories the mainstream media has missed, like Operation Fast and Furious and the questionable get-out-the-vote scheme called Pigford. He also captured what is at stake today in our political square.

If you agree with his points, post it on your Facebook page, like it on my Facebook page or forward this email to others to share it as we build this community for 2012.

Watch here.

Next week: Ken Blackwell, author and former Ohio secretary of state.

Cheers,

Ginni

P.S. Do you know about Hillsdale College's new online course Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution? It is a 10-week series that models the class taught on their campus and is available free of charge to all interested citizens. Rep. Issa afraid to enforce law against black AG Holder

Feb 20, 2012 05:13 am | Coach Collins

by Doug Book,  staff writer

During the past week a number of Operation Fast and Furious watchers have been celebrating the notion that Congressman Darrell Issa's February 14th letter to Eric Holder represents a last chance, comply or else, final offer to the gangster Attorney General. (1)

Unfortunately, buying into such wishful thinking will result in nothing but disappointment as the Congressman has shown little in his dealings with the Attorney General over the past 6 months but a litany of empty threats and predictable retreats when they are ignored.

During his December 8th testimony before Issa's House Government Reform Committee, Holder stated emphatically that his Department of Justice would NOT provide congress any Fast and Furious information dated later than February 4th of 2011. In support of that assertion he has prevented DOJ officials providing testimony to the House and ignored repeated requests for relevant letters and emails.  (2)

Perhaps such astounding arrogance should have ... Continue Reading:Rep. Issa afraid to enforce law against black AG Holder

American Minute Feb. 19

Feb 19, 2012 05:13 pm | Coach Collins

By Bill Federer, staff writer

The groans of a dying man kept him awake in the little inn outside New York. He was hardened to the cries because a college friend at Brown University had persuaded him to be an atheist. The next morning he learned the man who died in the night was none other than his college friend. This rude awakening led him to become one of America's first foreign missionaries. His name was Adoniram Judson, born in Massachusetts, August 9, 1788. At age 23, and his wife 22, they sailed from New England on FEBRUARY 19, 1812, for Calcutta, India, but were forced by the British East India Tea Company to Rangoon, Burma. They preached in Burmese, translated Scriptures and started schools. Enduring hardships, Adoniram was imprisoned during the Burmese War. He later gained respect from the Burmese and British officials, translating his English-Burmese Dictionary and the Bible. By his death, there were 63 churches, ... Reflections On the Battlefield: The Enemy Within and How To Overcome

Feb 19, 2012 01:13 pm | Coach Collins

By Barry Sanders, staff writer

Let us begin by defining who we are in terms of convictions and goals; the enemy in terms of how they are manifest. We are a contemplative,  geographically disparate coalition of like-minded individuals seeking  restoration of our Country by attending the Constitution, a people prepared  to sacrifice, using, but not limiting ourselves to the peaceful ballot box,  taking as literal the words and wisdom of Jefferson, Adams and Madison.

We are humble servants, a conduit for a future generations lifeblood; an arrogant yet factually accurate statement. We are versed in the documents giving birth to our Constitution, namely the Federalist Papers, vehemently dispelling the notion of an over reaching Federal government, taxation,  regulations and denial of individual liberties. We indeed hold certain truths to be self-evident, defending our borders against enemies, foreign and domestic, honoring sacrifices made by our fathers, mothers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters in uniform.

A macro examination yields ... Continue Reading:Reflections On the Battlefield: The Enemy Within and How To Overcome

Statue of Liberty next on hit list? Ex-CIA chief warns: Get ready for terrorists who make al-Qaida 'look like amateurs.'      Former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency R. James Woolsey told a radio host today that Americans "have to get ready" for Iran to retaliate against international pressure over its nuclear program with terrorist attacks, including, possibly, a strike on the Statue of Liberty.

Woolsey, who currently serves as chairman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, was speaking on Aaron Klein Investigative Radio on New York's WABC Radio.

Klein pointed out that Iran supports the militant Islamist group Hezbollah, which has been designated by the U.S. and several other nations as a terrorist organization, and asked Woolsey if he foresees the group plotting attacks on Jewish targets in the near future.

Banned US Commercial about the national debt
Banned US Commercial about the national debt
A new television ad about the U.S. national debt produced by Citizens Against Government Waste has been deemed "too controversial" by major networks including ABC, A&E and The History Channel and will not be shown on those channels. The commercial is a homage to a 1986 ad that was entitled "The Deficit Trials" that was also banned by the major networks. Apparently telling the truth about the national debt is a little too "hot" for the major networks to handle. But perhaps it is time to tell the American people the truth. In 1986, the U.S. national debt was around 2 trillion dollars. Today, it is rapidly approaching 14 trillion dollars. The American Dream is being ripped apart right in front of our eyes, but apparently some of the major networks don't want the American people to really understand what is going on.

The truth is that the ad does not even have anything in it that should be offensive. The commercial is set in the year 2030, and the main character is a Chinese professor that is seen lecturing his students on the fall of great empires. As images of the United States are shown on a screen behind him, the Chinese professor tells his students the following about the behavior of great empires: "They all make the same mistakes. Turning their backs on the principles that made them great. America tried to spend and tax itself out of a great recession. Enormous so-called "stimulus" spending, massive changes to health care, government takeover of private industries, and crushing debt."

Perhaps it is what the Chinese Professor says next that is alarming the big television networks: "Of course, we owned most of their debt, so now they work for us".

Brief · February 20, 2012

The Foundation

"Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness." --George Washington

Political Futures

Rick Santorum

"There are reports the Obama campaign, long focused on Mitt Romney, is beginning to prepare for a face-off with [Rick] Santorum, just in case the former Pennsylvania senator captures the Republican nomination. The conventional wisdom among both Democrats and Republicans is that Obama would seek to tear Santorum limb-from-limb with attacks on his positions on abortion, contraception, and, now, prenatal testing. ... In his first surge, in the last days of Iowa caucus campaigning, Santorum shot into the lead on the strength of a platform that featured appealing positions on jobs, on taxes, on national defense, as well as the social positions for which he is well known. Alone among Republicans, Santorum spoke at length about the decline of U.S. manufacturing and the problems of American workers who don't have college degrees. ... Those positions, along with his dogged determination on the stump, caused many Republicans to give him a serious look. Now, leading in the polls both nationally and in Michigan, which holds a key primary February 28, Santorum knows that his opponents, both in the Republican race and Democrats, will seek to provoke him into controversial statements on social issues. And yet in the last few days, he has been unable to steer the political conversation back to the topics that work best with voters. If he can't re-take control of that conversation, he could find himself in serious trouble." --columnist Byron York

Washington's Birthday

In some circles, today is observed as "Presidents' Day," jointly recognizing Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, but it is still officially recognized as the anniversary of "Washington's Birthday" -- and that is how we mark the date in our shop. Washington's actual birthday is Feb. 22.

For the Record

"The [birth control mandate] 'accommodation' ... is a farce. If you're paying for health insurance -- or if you self-insure, as many institutions do -- shifting responsibilities to the insurance companies doesn't shift the costs, just the paperwork. A Catholic hospital would still pay for the services; there just wouldn't be a line item for it in the monthly insurance bill. That's not accommodation; that's laundering. ... Of course, if religious institutions don't want to violate their consciences, they can simply stop offering health insurance altogether (providing yet another example of how Obama misled voters when he promised that the Affordable Care Act wouldn't cause anyone to lose their current coverage). That would at least allow religious organizations to uphold their principles. The result, however, would be to force taxpayers to subsidize practices many find morally abhorrent. In other words, Obama's solution is to make paying taxes a moral dilemma for many pro-lifers. ... When we empower bureaucrats and politicians to make such huge personal decisions for us, it becomes impossible to avoid trampling on liberty. The Roman Catholic Church was simply the first in the leviathan's path." --columnist Jonah Goldberg

Re: The Left

"To be blunt, the president has it exactly backwards. It is not religious institutions that wish to be held to a different set of rules, but those who would kick the First Amendment to the curb -- the one that establishes the exact same religious standard for everyone -- in order to accommodate the abortion-on-demand constituency. Thus, when Democrats and the president speak about finding an 'accommodation' to address religious peoples' concerns, they are being both arrogant and disingenuous: no member of the government has the option of deciding whether or not accommodate clauses contained in the Constitution. They are bound by it --all of it. Despite all their high-minded pronouncements to the contrary, Democratic agenda has long been defined by different people playing by different sets of rules. ... Even more ironically, for Democrats, anything less than an equal outcome is de facto evidence that someone is playing by a different set of rules, and must be brought to heel by any means necessary -- even if it means bending the rules in the process." --columnist Arnold Alert

Culture

"Never mind that a vast government apparatus exists to provide poor women access to contraceptives, from Medicaid and community health centers to Title X. There are roughly 4,500 Title X-funded clinics around the country. They are required to provide free birth control to the poor and subsidized birth control to people with incomes between 100 percent and 250 percent of poverty. They serve about 5 million people a year. By any reasonable standard, we are one of the most lavishly contracepted societies in the history of the planet. ... A Centers for Disease Control report this year found that among teen mothers who had unintended pregnancies, only 13 percent said they had trouble getting access to birth control. ... Of all the causes of the explosion in illegitimate births, limited access to contraception can't be high on the list. At the same time that we have seen a profusion of contraceptives that are dazzling in their variety, impressive in their efficacy, and democratic in their widespread accessibility, out-of-wedlock births have gone from 10 percent in 1970 to 42 percent today (largely among poor women with access to government-provided contraceptives)." --National Review editor Rich Lowry

Government

"President Obama said in his State of the Union speech, 'We've already agreed to more than $2 trillion in cuts and savings.' ... Cato Institute economist Dan Mitchell cut through the fog to get at the truth of the $2 trillion 'cut.' 'We have a budget of, what, almost $4 trillion? So if we're doing $2 trillion of cuts,' Mitchell said, 'we're cutting government in half. That sounds wonderful.' ... Calling that a 'cut' is nonsense. Mitchell gave an analogy: 'What if I came to you and said, "I've been on a diet for the last month, and I've gained 10 pounds. Isn't that great?" You would say: "Wait, what are you talking about? That's insane." And I said: "I was going to gain 15 pounds. I've only gained 10 pounds, therefore my diet is successful."' Democrats use this deceit when they want more social spending. ... Mitchell points out that the politicians don't even have to make actual cuts to save the future. If they just slowed the growth of government to about 2 percent per year, the U.S. economy could grow out of this mess. But the politicians won't do even that. ... Bottom line: Don't trust the politicians' numbers." --columnist John Stossel

Essential Liberty

"Americans pride themselves on being a self-reliant people. ... But with each passing year, that portrait flies more and more in the face of reality. The numbers plainly show that we are becoming a people dependent not on ourselves, but on government. We are evolving into a nation of takers, not givers. The numbers in question come in the form of a new Heritage Foundation report titled 'The 2012 Index of Dependence on Government.' You don't have to read far before you realize that the days of Horatio Alger stories are behind us. Start with the most basic facts: Today, more than 67.3 million Americans rely on assistance from Washington for everything from food, shelter and clothing to college tuition and health care. These benefits cost federal taxpayers roughly $2.5 trillion annually. Oh, about those taxpayers: Even as the number of Americans receiving federal aid rises, the number of federal taxpayers continues to drop: Nearly half of all Americans -- 49.5 percent -- don't pay any federal income taxes." --Heritage Foundation president Ed Feulner

The Gipper

"The federal government has taken too much tax money from the people, too much authority from the states, and too much liberty with the Constitution." --Ronald Reagan

Reader Comments

"The best way to fight Marxism in America is to send Obama packing! What he knows about Jesus and His teaching you could put on the head of a pin and never find it, even with the strongest magnifying glass in the world. Just look at how he handled the abortion/contraceptive thing and you know just how out of touch with Christian religion and principles he really is." --Jiggs

"The best weapon to fight Marxism in America is political education. Especially for the young and the poor so they can know the truth about what the left is really all about. The Patriot Post is the best source for truth in politics and government." --Fred

"Historically, the best weapon to fight Marxism has been any weapon with a caliber greater than point four. Education (what a quaint idea!) seems to be ineffective." --GAMtns

"This temporary payroll tax cut, which makes no sense at all, is just another example of Congress 'leading' the country to ruin while placing at least one hand over their backside." --Brian

"The payroll tax 'holiday' is another Democrat scam to fool voters into thinking it means something to their lives. All it does is accelerate the demise of Social Security or increase the debt. And the Democrats don't care which because they've already positioned themselves to deflect blame completely back to the Republicans. And their constituents lap up their lies and hypocrisy like mother's milk." --Mike

"Please call 'crony' capitalism by its proper name -- Corporate Socialism. I have been corrected on this and I think you will agree too. Crony capitalism allows the socialists off the hook every time. They say, 'See, capitalism doesn't work, it's corrupt,' even when their ideology is largely responsible." --Freepeoples

"The caption under the picture of the Navy Seal has both his first and last names misspelled. How about issuing a correction?" --Robert the Bruce

Editor's Reply: That image did not originate with us, it was a last minute addition, and our editing team just read it the way it should have been instead of fixing it. For what it's worth, Houston's first name was also misspelled. We deeply regret the error, which has been corrected.

Opinion in Brief

"Understand, I don't expect liberals to turn on [Barack Obama] because he continues to promote the redistribution of wealth. ... But when, during his State of the Union address, he had the gall to say that it's not fair that Warren Buffet's secretary, Debbie Bosanek, pays more in income taxes than billionaire Buffet, I don't recall hearing any of the Party faithful call him on it. As we all know, tax rate is not the same thing as tax obligation. Even Ms. Bossiness ... knows she doesn't write a bigger check to the IRS than her boss. We also know ... that folks like Buffet and Romney already paid income taxes on the money they earned at a rate of 35% before getting to invest whatever was left and then pay an additional 15% on those capital gains. The IRS, a gang of ghouls who would cheerfully pry the gold from the teeth of the deceased, then gets a third crack at their money in the form of death taxes. The notion that rich people don't pay their fair share of taxes is such a blatant lie that only that half of the population that pays nothing, while in some cases collecting 'refunds,' would be hypocritical enough to turn it into their favorite mantra." --columnist Burt Prelutsky

The Last Word

Editor's Note: The following is satire. Obama didn't really say these things.

"President Obama ... announced that he is stepping down as president until after Election Day so he can focus all his time on campaigning. 'Let's just forget it,' Obama said in an interview with Barbara Walters. 'Nobody's buying this. I'm already mainly campaigning. This just formalizes the arrangement.' Obama's decision to temporarily cede the presidency to Vice President Joseph Biden comes amid criticism that the budget he released ... does more for Obama's political prospects than the country's economic future. ... 'The new budget I released ... was produced at our campaign headquarters in Chicago by David Axelrod,' Obama told Walters. 'He's is a wizard with numbers, though mostly it's been with polls. This is the first time he's tried writing a federal budget. I think he did just great.' ... Obama blamed Republicans for the deficit. 'They're making me do this. They upset me, and when I'm stressed, I spend. I'm working on it.' ... Meanwhile, Chinese President Hu Jintao expressed satisfaction with the new leverage his country would have over the United States as China increases its lending to fund America's spending. 'Bark like a dog, USA! Speak! Roll over.'" --columnist Keith Coffer

"'That thing was greased,' as they say in Chicago .... Word now coming out reveals just two days after Secretary of State Brian Kemp gave Barack Obama the green light to appear on Georgia election ballots, the Department of Energy (DOE) awarded Kemp's state an eye popping $8.3 BILLION loan guarantee to begin construction on two nuclear plants." -Suzanne Eovaldi, CoachIsRight.com
Coincidence? Was the "fix in" long before Malihi's ruling? Is the "Chicago Way" now alive and well in Georgia? Was someone "bought-off"? Was "pressure applied"?

Eovaldi implies as much: "So on February 7, 2012, Georgia Secretary of State Kemp stated '... I find that the Respondent, President Barack Obama, meets the State of Georgia's eligibility requirements.' And a scant two days later, Obama's DOE finds the money to award Kemp's state a whopping $8.3 billion loan guarantee for a $14 billion nuclear project and license approvals not done in the industry in over 30 years!"

Coincidence or not, one thing is certain, with still more legal challenges on Obama's eligibility in the pipeline and the findings of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Cold Case Posse scheduled to be released in about a week, Barack Obama knows that he's not out of danger. He knows that he's still on the ropes and that's precisely why Barack Obama is still so desperately trying to make the eligibility issue to go away!

The Usurper-in-Chief, has the audacity to run for reelection to an office he may not have been eligible to hold in the first place. He's already spent millions of dollars to shut you down and shut you up. Is it unreasonable to ask if he's also willing to use your hard-earned tax dollars to "grease" the wheels as well?

Well Mr. Obama, you can run but you can't hide from this constitutional crisis of your making. You may want this issue to go away... and you've already shown, by your actions, that you want the Constitution to go away as well... but we're not going to give you the satisfaction! We're not going to let you get away with it and we have not yet begun to fight

Liking Ike

Reasons To Like (And Honor) Ike
By George F. Will

Two coming developments, one dismal and one excellent, pertain to America's memory of a great man. One of several oversight panels soon will consider a proposed memorial to Dwight Eisenhower. The proposal is an exhibitionistic triumph of theory over function -- more a monument to its creator Frank Gehry, practitioner of architectural flamboyance, than to the most underrated president. Fortunately, on Tuesday comes Jean Edward Smith's biography "Eisenhower in War and Peace," which demonstrates why the man's achievements merit a memorial better than the proposed one.

Greek Bailout 2.0 Will Make Everything Worse

After receiving a $145 billion bailout in May 2010, Greece is now seeking a second larger bailout from the European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Here we go again. Of course, throwing even more money at the European welfare state won't solve its problems. The Greek government created their own problems by rapidly expanding the welfare state over the past couple decades. A second U.S. taxpayer-financed bailout of Greece will only make the debt situation worse in the long-run.

Greece is a prime example of how socialism doesn't work in practice. As U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said, "the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money." Greece's government debt as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a staggering 140 percent. The size of Greece's bloated public sector is unsustainable. One out of every five Greeks is employed by the government. Some employees in the Greece Parliament do not even bother showing up to work because there are not enough places for all of them to sit, according to the New York Times. Read more

FreedomWorks Stands with Senator Inhofe Against the EPA

The Environmental Protection Agency, a favorite tool of Obama's job crushing agenda, continuously promulgates unilateral rules and regulations that ultimately threaten entire industries in the United States and push consumer prices constantly higher. Most notably, the EPA's recent regulatory onslaught is targeting energy by way of new restrictions on fossil fuels, which will increase prices, reduce the reliability of the nation's electricity grid, and destroy jobs. One especially dangerous EPA regulation is the Utility Maximum Available Control Technology (MACT) rule, which has the potential to cripple the American coal industry and deal a critical blow to the fragile American economy by way of skyrocketing energy costs.

However, yesterday in Washington, freedom struck first. Senator James Inhofe (R) of Oklahoma, Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, introduced Senate Joint Resolution 37. This resolution of disapproval filed under the Congressional Review Act that, passed with a simple majority vote in the Senate, would stop the utility MACT before it does any harm and would challenge the EPA's assault on the economy and jobs. The Unsolvable Problem of Executive Power

Posted: 20 Feb 2012 03:42 PM PST

(Steven Hayward)

Since it's still Presidents Days for a few more hours, it's worthy taking up a challenge from one of our good-natured liberal commenters, an old pal from high school (are you paying attention Eric?), who posted a comment on an earlier PIG book post of mine raising the question of the constitutional issues raised in the Iran-Contra scandal.  Glad you asked.  In fact, the Politically Incorrect Guide to the Presidents goes into some detail on that question, enlisting as an expert witness John Locke, and his famous chapter on Prerogative from the Second Treatise:

During the course of the Iran-Contra affair, numerous scholars and intellectuals dusted off John Locke's Second Treatise of Government-the text that had been the primary inspiration for the Declaration of Independence. Locke's understanding of the nature of prerogative in the executive was equally important to the Founders as they designed the office of the presidency. Locke had defined prerogative simply as "nothing but the power of doing public good without a rule" (emphasis in the original). Why "without a rule"? Because, Locke explained, "many things there are which the law can by no means provide for.... [M]any accidents may happen wherein a strict and rigid observation of the laws may do harm." Indeed, Locke went as far as to say that "it is fit that the laws themselves should in some cases give way to the executive power. . . . [The executive must have] the power to act according to discretion for the public good, without the prescription of the law, and sometimes even against it."

Locke's idea of prerogative power is plainly a holdover, preserved and amplified from the historically far-reaching power of European monarchs, against which the institutions of parliamentary democracy arose-to check its too frequent abuse and aggrandizement. Executive prerogative is a concept that cannot by its very nature be delimited through formal legal means. And executive prerogative sits uneasily with the formal constitutionalism of American republican thought. No modern constitutional lawyer can accept it easily (though the federal judiciary has been very reluctant to intervene to limit or define it, dismissing several lawsuits brought by members of Congress to clarify the matter). In the scheme of the Founders, the abuse of executive prerogative was meant to be checked by the separation of powers, and congressional oversight is both necessary and proper. But even within congressional assertion of its own prerogative in the positive law, there is clearly scope for the president to exercise his prerogative. The National Security Act, for example, recognizes the general need for secrecy and discretion by providing that the president must notify Congress about covert operations "in a timely manner." What is "timely"? There are no legislative or judicial parameters of timeliness. Reagan never notified anyone in Congress of the Iran arms sales initiative during the year prior to its exposure in November 1986. But obviously had Reagan notified Congress of the arms transactions with Iran, it would have been on the front page of the Washington Post the next day.

Examples of presidential use of prerogative power in American history would include Jefferson's decision to consummate the Louisiana Purchase despite his own constitutional doubts; Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus in 1861 (the Constitution expressly stipulates that suspension of habeas "in times of rebellion" is a congressional, not executive, power); Theodore Roosevelt's sailing of the Great White Fleet in 1907 in the absence of congressional authorization; and Franklin Roosevelt's various transgressions of the Neutrality Act, among others. These and other examples fit Alexander Hamilton's conception in The Federalist of the presidency as the locus of the government's "extensive and arduous enterprises." Jefferson, channeling Locke, argued in 1810 that there are "higher" duties than "strict observance of the laws." But Nixon showed the limits of presidential prerogative when he infamously argued that "If the president does it, it's not illegal"-an assertion the American public rejected.

As between Jefferson and Nixon, how is this delicate matter to be judged? While scholars and constitutional lawyers will argue for bright-line stan- dards, the example of Nixon suggests the answer that Locke gives explicitly: the people shall judge. "The people," Locke wrote, "observing the whole tendency of their actions to be the public good, contested not what was done without law to that end, or, if any human frailty or mistake-for princes are but men, made as others-appeared in some small declinations from that end, yet it was visible the main of their conduct tended to nothing but the care of the public. The people, therefore, finding reason to be satisfied with these princes whenever they acted without or contrary to the letter of the law, acquiesced in what they did...."

The outcome of the constitutional struggle over the Iran-Contra matter would be decided in that exact way: by public judgment of the political clash in Washington. The joint House-Senate committee investigation of the Iran-Contra affair-an investigation Democrats likened to Watergate and hoped would end with Reagan's impeachment-took a turn President Reagan's critics had not expected when Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North appeared and delivered a devastatingly effective attack on liberals in Congress for their irresponsible meddling in foreign policy. Public opinion decisively shifted in Reagan's favor, and the liberal dream of driving another Republican president from office died quickly. In other words, the people judged, just as Locke said they should, and judged that Reagan had acted properly, if not necessarily wisely.

Obama Is Driving Us Crazy

(John Hinderaker)

Unemployment is down, according to the official numbers, yet more people than ever are not working. What are they doing instead? The New York Post reports that an astonishing number of them are classifying themselves as disabled in order to continue receiving government benefits:

Standing too many months on the unemployment line is driving Americans crazy - literally - and it's costing taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars.

With their unemployment-insurance checks running out, some of the country's long-term jobless are scrambling to fill the gap by filing claims for mental illness and other disabilities with Social Security - a surge that hobbles taxpayers and making the employment rate look healthier than it should as these people drop out of the job statistics. ...

As of January, the federal government was mailing out disability checks to more than 10.5 million individuals, including 2 million to spouses and children of disabled workers, at a cost of record $200 billion a year, recent research from JPMorgan Chase shows.

The sputtering economy has fueled those ranks. Around 5.3 percent of the population between the ages of 25 and 64 is currently collecting federal disability payments, a jump from 4.5 percent since the economy slid into a recession.

Mental-illness claims, in particular, are surging. During the recent economic boom, only 33 percent of applicants were claiming mental illness, but that figure has jumped to 43 percent, says Rutledge, citing preliminary results from his latest research. ...

The jump in successful disability claims also is making the unemployment picture look extra rosy because those folks are falling off the jobless rolls.

"If they're on disability they're generally not counted," says Feroli, who estimates that a quarter of those dropping out of the job market are getting disability. "It's no trivial number."

That last statistic is remarkable: a quarter of those who are dropping out of the job market, and hence out of the unemployment statistics, are going on disability instead. Disability, unlike unemployment benefits, will most likely go on forever. So this is one more way in which Obama is making the U.S. more like Europe-Scandinavia, in particular, where large numbers of seemingly able-bodied individuals live much of their adult lives on disability benefits.

John's support of Mitt Romney is implicit in his comments on Rick Santorum, as it was in his comments on Newt Gingrich. John thinks that Romney presents Republicans with the best chance of beating Obama in November. He is therefore frustrated that they haven't lined up behind Mitt in service to the cause.

Mitt is an inspirational candidate. The problem is that what he inspires is intense apathy among a substantial number of conservatives and Republicans. They (we) resist him. Santorum is the recycled non-Romney who now benefits from this resistance. He may be the last non-Romney standing. Among the previous beneficiaries of the resistance to Romney are Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Santorum, Gingrich and now Santorum again. The logic of a Romney candidacy has been insufficient so far to wear down the resistance of a large share of conservatives and Republicans.

I understand the resistance, but I am lukewarm on the non-Romneys as well. If I had to choose a candidate among them, I would choose Romney. I think he is the least bad of the lot.

The resistance to Romney among a large part of the base of the Republican Party, however, suggests to me that Romney himself would be less than a stellar candidate against Obama. He's got problems that the non-Romneys have successfully exploited. Romney's defense of Romneycare in the debates has been a recurrent thumb in the eye to the not inconsiderable number of Republicans for whom repeal of Obamacare is a priority along with with fiscal and economic issues.

Romney himself must know he is not long on passionate supporters. His claim has been to superior electability against Obama among a weak field of GOP candidates. But the failure to inspire affection if not passion itself reflects a weakness in a candidate for high elective office.

There are other weaknesses in Mitt's candidacy; Ben Domenech explores them in "The trouble with Mitt." The attack by Romney and his surrogates on Santorum for having voted to increase the debt limit when he was in the Senate reflects some of these other weaknesses. Mitt must think we're really, really stupid.

The inclination of Republican primary voters and caucus goers to support Gingrich or Santorum is not the sign of a character flaw or mental defect on their part. It is a sign that Romney is a problematic candidate for the party whose standard bearer he seeks to be. Decrying the failure of Republican voters for failing to fall in line behind him seems to me something less than a winning argument.

Satan Is Real

(Scott Johnson)

The New York Times Book Review carries a good review of the late Charlie Louvin's memoir (written with Benjamin Whitmer), Satan Is Real: The Ballad of the Louvin Brothers. As the review notes, Charlie Louvin died last year just after the manuscript of his memoir was completed. (The book borrows the title of the Louvin Brothers gospel album with the memorable fire and brimstone cover.)

Who the heck is Charlie Louvin? He was a member of one of the great brothers acts in country music; Charlie's brother Ira died in an automobile accident in 1965. In the video below you can hear Charlie Louvin singing the old Louvin Brothers' song "Love and Wealth" on The Nashville Network in 1987. Backing Louvin on the harmony vocals are Emmylou Harris and Vern Gosdin. They bring out the world of hurt in the song.

The Byrds recorded a Louvin Brothers' song on their pioneering Sweetheart of the Rodeo album in 1968. For many of us, it was the first time we'd ever heard of the Louvin Brothers. Sad but true.

The Byrds' connection is all over the video. Former Byrds Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons discovered Miss Emmylou. Parsons immediately understood that she was a brilliant harmony singer, as one can hear in the video.

Before the Byrds were formed and Hillman was recruited to join them, he began his career as a member of a group that featured Vern and Rex Gosdin. In Hillman's honor it was renamed the Hillmen. Like the Byrds, it was a group with talent to burn. Ex-Byrd Gene Clark later recorded his first solo album with the Gosdin Brothers when he left the Byrds.

In the video you can hear America singing.

How about one more? Let's watch the Louvin Brothers at work. In the video below the Louvin Brothers perform "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby" on the Grand Ole Opry television show in 1956. It's an incredibly beautiful song: a nightmare with a happy ending. And when you've heard the Louvin Brothers out, check out what Alison Krauss and Jerry Douglas make of the song.

Are There Republicans Who Think This Is a Good Idea? Seriously?

Posted: 19 Feb 2012 05:10 PM PST

(John Hinderaker)

Rick Santorum is a bright, well-intentioned guy. But the idea that he is the strongest candidate the Republicans can nominate for the presidency strikes me, with all due respect, as ludicrous. Put aside the fact that Santorum lost his last race by 18 points in his home state of Pennsylvania: not exactly an auspicious way to kick off a presidential campaign. Rather, consider that Santorum has always been most passionate about the social issues. Is that really what the GOP wants to talk to voters about in 2012, when the country-the Brokest Nation In History, as Mark Steyn puts it-is $15 trillion in debt; when the Obama administration has driven our economy into the most prolonged funk since the Great Depression; and when Barack Obama has instituted the most corrupt system of cronyism in American history? Seriously?

The fate of a Santorum candidacy was foreshadowed this morning in Santorum's appearance on CBS's Face the Nation. Follow the link to read the entire, sad transcript. Here are the questions that Bob Schieffer asked Santorum, verbatim:

You are the leader in the polls this morning. And I have to say you were very busy yesterday. The Associated Press led its story of your appearance in Columbus, Ohio, by saying, quote, "Rick Santorum questioned Barack Obama's Christian values." That was after you lashed out at the President's proposal on energy of all things when you said this.

RICK SANTORUM (Republican Presidential Candidate/Former Pennsylvania Senator): It's not about you. It's not about you. It's not about your quality of life. It's not about your jobs.

MAN: Right.

RICK SANTORUM: It's about some phony ideal, some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible, a different theology.

(Crowd applauding)

BOB SCHIEFFER: So, Senator, I've got to ask you. What- what in the world were you talking about, Sir?

***

BOB SCHIEFFER: Well, how does that translate into some sort of theology that the President's theology is not based on the Bible. I mean that suggests that he's not a Christian.

***

BOB SCHIEFFER: I- I don't want to just spend the whole program on this, but was your use of the word theology, perhaps, you could have had a better word than that? I mean, don't you know that, or do you wonder that- that might lead some people to suggest that you were questioning the President's faith?

***

BOB SCHIEFFER: At another stop in Columbus, you took on the President on prenatal care for expectant mothers. Here's what you said at this- in this passage.

RICK SANTORUM: One of the things that you don't know about Obamacare and one of the mandates is they require free prenatal testing in every insurance policy in America. Why? Because it saves money in health care. Why? Because free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions and therefore less care that has to be done because we cull the ranks of the disabled in our society.

BOB SCHIEFFER: Senator, I- I have to ask you to- to give some explanation of that. You sound like you're saying that the purpose of prenatal care is to cause people to- to have abortions, to get more abortions in this country. I think there are any number testing, I think any number of people would- would say that's not the purpose at all.

***

BOB SCHIEFFER: Well, I- I know you know what you're talking about. I know that well. I know you also had another child that was stillborn. But-

RICK SANTORUM (overlapping): And I was-

BOB SCHIEFFER (overlapping): Didn't you want to know about that, just a minute.

(Cross talking)

BOB SCHIEFFER: Just hold on.

RICK SANTORUM: But what my- my child was not stillborn. My child was born alive.

BOB SCHIEFFER: All right.

RICK SANTORUM: -and he lived two hours.

BOB SCHIEFFER: All right.

***

BOB SCHIEFFER: I stand corrected on the stillborn. You're absolutely right. I simply misspoke. But, Senator, do you not want any kind of prenatal testing? I mean would we just turn our back on science that this is something that expectant mothers should not go through, that it's best not to know about these things ahead of time? I mean is that what you're saying here?

***

BOB SCHIEFFER (overlapping): You're not saying. Let me just ask you, you're not saying that the cause of this, that the President looks down on disabled people, are you? You're not accusing him of that?

***

BOB SCHIEFFER: And- and how you feel about this. Another thing that raised a few eyebrows yesterday, Senator, you questioned the value of all things at the public school system. Now here's what you said about that.

RICK SANTORUM: But the idea that the federal government should be running schools, frankly, much less that the state government should be running schools is anachronistic. It goes back to the time of industrialization of America when people came off the farms where they did home school or have the little neighborhood school and into these big factories. So we built equal factories called public schools.

BOB SCHIEFFER: So, there you are, Senator. I mean, are you saying that we shouldn't have public schools now? I mean I thought public schools were the foundation of American democracy.

Santorum did a reasonably good job of fielding these questions. But does anyone seriously believe that it is in the Republicans' interest for the 2012 presidential election to center on theology and gynecology? Here is Schieffer's last question of Santorum:

BOB SCHIEFFER: Senator, I want to thank you very much for being with us this morning. I had hoped to ask you about some questions about the economy. But, frankly, you made so much news yesterday, out there on the campaign trail, I felt compelled to ask you about that. Thank you so much for being with us.

That pretty much says it all. With Santorum launching one social issues bomb after another, there is no time to talk about the economy. Is this the Democratic Party's dream, or what? In a national poll that came out today, Santorum is leading Mitt Romney by eight points among likely Republican voters. Can Republicans possibly be that foolish? Is it conceivable that a president with Obama's lousy record could coast to victory, virtually by default, because the Republicans nominate a candidate who would rather talk about gynecology than debt? At the moment, that prospect does not seem far-fetched.

Happy Presidents Day.

Let's Celebrate the Idea of Presidents Obeying the Law.

Send Faxes to Pres. Obama (and Your 3 Members of Congress) Protesting His Gutting of the 287(g) Program for Local Immigration Enforcment

Last week, DHS head Janet Napolitano told Congress that she doesn't want to do the "exit" part of the entry/exit system for the 45-million-a-year foreign visitors because she has illegal immigration under control already. Apparently, no visitor is overstaying visas any more.

Napolitano also is refusing to deport about 300,000 illegal aliens who already had their day in court and were ordered deported. etc. etc. etc.

And now the President has submitted a budget that allows Napolitano to gut the 287(g) program that trains local and state police to arrest illegal aliens, detain and transfer for deportation. The open-borders groups have been demanding an end to this program for years, and this budget would give them most of what they want.

Where was Glenn? In Europe starting a global partnership

Glenn was out a few days last week on what he called a 'special assignment' and the radio audience found out exactly what he was up to over the weekend. Glenn went to Europe to meet with high ranking members of the Vatican, and to see the Greece devastation/violence first hand. What is Glenn trying to get accomplished with the trip?

Tea Party...International?

Through FreedomWorks' global initiative Glenn was able to meet with some amazing people from London, Serbia, Georgia (country not the state), Rome, Milan, Germany, Austria and more who value freedom in the same way you do. So why are they calling it the 'Tea Party' and not something related to their own native history? Glenn has that answer and more on radio today.

Glenn meets with Vatican officials: DETAILS

Glenn had in-depth talks with several high ranking members of the Catholic Church over the weekend and came away very impressed with how in tune they were with the dangers we face today. Glenn gives his take on every conversation he had over the eventful weekend on radio today. Plus check out Glenn's column for the Washington Post, 'Why We Are All Catholics Now.'

Glenn hits streets of Greece

The media has all but ignored the ongoing riots and violent uprising in Greece recently, only showing a brief clip without explaining anything at all. It's getting so crazy there that people are smashing up the stone and marble (yes, marble) streets and throwing the chunks at riot police. Crews hauled off 40 tons of rubble after the last protest finally ended. See the pics of Glenn on the streets of Greece and get his reaction.

President's Day Special: Our founders pledged their 'lives, fortunes and sacred honor" for the freedom we enjoy in America today. It seems today's politicians care more about controlling our lives, spending our fortunes, and don't know the definition of honor. For one day only, 1791 is offering the "My Life, Fortune, and Sacred Honor" t-shirt for only $17.91. Buy one for you (and your Congressman) today!

Glenn reacts to Behar

Since Glenn was out of the country when Joy(less) Behar made her "genius" comments on Virginia's new pre-abortion ultrasound mandate, he couldn't help but make a few remarks this morning on what he referred to as, "some of the most amazing audio he's ever heard."

Linsanity exposes silly lib PC standards

New York Knicks point guard sensation Jeremy Lin has been on a historic run in his first appearances as a starter. 'Linsanity' has gripped NYC and the sporting world, but the PC police are out in full force. Lin is an Asian American, and with the hypersensitive politically correct climate created by liberals several reporters are in hot water after using 'offensive' puns. Adding to the ridiculousness, one of the reporters accused of racism is actually married to an Asian. Glenn reacts on radio today
