Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect every one who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined.

Alan Dershowitz: Media Matters could become Rev. Wright of 2012 for Obama

Liberal Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz says Media Matters could become the Rev. Jeremiah Wright of 2012 for the Obama campaign if the White House and the Democratic Party don't clearly distance themselves from the organization.

"Well I think if swing voters in the pro-Israel community had any idea how extreme Media Matters was on issues of Israel and supporters of Israel, they would regard Media Matters as another, you know, Rev. Wright," Dershowitz told The Daily Caller.

'Paid Democratic Hitman': Stephanopoulos' Bizarre Debate Question on Contraception Suddenly Makes Sense

The Blaze | by Becket Adams | Posted on February 14, 2012 at 10:13pm

Dick Morris
Dick Morris

Conservative commentator Dick Morris believes that the Democrat party is covertly trying to convince voters that Republicans want to "ban contraception."

Seem a little far-fetched?

Remember when George Stephanopoulos, former senior political adviser to President Bill Clinton, moderated that ABC News Republican debate last month? Immediately following the debate, he was accused of asking "unfair" and biased questions and of running the debate in a manner that was anything but objective.

And while these charges are debatable, most everyone agrees that the moment where Stephanopoulos suddenly shifted the topic from job creation to hypothetical questions involving whether the states have a right to ban contraception was...odd (to say the least).

Did an Ivy League Professor Suggest Including Anti-Israel Messaging in College Courses?

The Blaze | by Sharona Schwartz | Posted on February 15, 2012 at 1:16am

Prof. Amy Kaplan, University of Pennsylvania
Prof. Amy Kaplan, University of Pennsylvania

There is an audio clip making the rounds of pro-Israel blogs, purporting to reveal a University of Pennsylvania professor apparently suggesting that fellow teachers insert a boycott Israel message into their courses, even in courses not connected to Middle East politics.

The audio clip was taped at the National Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Conference earlier this month at the University of Pennsylvania about which The Blaze reported.

The bad news is last month some well intentioned political activist announced a cut-off date for signing up co-sponsors for Rep. Rose Marie Swanger's American Law's for American Courts (HB 2029) in an effort to inject some urgency into the effort.

What it resulted in was an interruption of the campaign to encourage those Representatives not yet signed on as co-sponsors to join with those Legislators who have already recognized the death by smothering threat to our Constitution.

The good news is there is no cut-off date for adding co-sponsors and we are once again asking your readers to contact their representatives and ask they join the battle.

There are only three Representatives from Bucks who are co-sponsors, Representatives Clymer, Petri and Quinn and we thank them for showing their colors.

But that leaves seven more Representatives who appear to be still standing on the sidelines as the battle for our existence as a free people is joined.

Lame rhetoric? I'm afraid not. If you do not understand the threat we face from 'peaceful' opportunists like CAIR, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bucksafa11info/messages or contact me at bucksafa11@yahoo.com to schedule an Open the Koran presentation for you and your friends.

If you're ready to help, visit www.actforamerica.org and sign on as a chapter leader. It's free and the people there are friendly and helpful. Your help is needed. Every township, every neighborhood needs an Act! for America chapter leader.

But before you do anything, if your Pennsylvania Representative has not yet ssigned on as co-sponsor, urge her/him to do so and ask what is it that prevents him/her from doing so.

Help Pennsylvania be counted among those States that have shown the courage to face off with the enemies who have plainly stated their aim is to destroy our Nation. Our laws have worked just fine since colonial times. What is needed are politicians who respect them. And you know whose job it is to remind them of that.

John Ryan

Constitution 101

Constitution 101:
The Meaning and History of the Constitution

Available to you, your family, your friends,
and all Americans.

Begins February 20, 2012 - Sign Up TODAY!

Dr. Larry P. Arnn
Dr. Larry P. Arnn

Over the years, many friends of Hillsdale, those who never attended college here, have said to me: "Dr. Arnn, I wish I could take Hillsdale's Constitution course!"

In response to these requests, this past year, for the first time ever, Hillsdale College offered the "Introduction to the Constitution" lecture series at no charge. Frankly, I wasn't sure what sort of a response a course like this would have.

That's why I was excited to see that YOU and almost 200,000 other people from all over the United States registered for "Introduction to the Constitution."

Thank you very much for registering and participating. I hope you learned a lot from the series.

I was thrilled, not only by the response, but at what it indicates: Americans are willing and eager learn about the Constitution and to defend the principles of liberty that made America so prosperous!

And this re-awakening of national interest in the Constitution comes not a minute too soon.

Now, for the first time ever, Hillsdale College is offering a no-cost 10-week online Constitution course based on the class Hillsdale College students must complete for graduation:

"Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution"

This course on the U.S. Constitution is available online at no charge to anyone who wants to understand and defend the timeless principles of liberty upon which our nation was founded!

I am proud to be teaching part of our NEW "Constitution 101" course and hope YOU will be one of my students again!

Hillsdale College"Constitution 101" begins on February 20, 2012, and concludes the week of April 30. It will cover such topics as the Declaration of Independence and its connection to the Constitution, how the Constitution is structured to protect individual liberty and ensure good government, the crisis of constitutional government faced by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, and modern challenges to the Constitution during the "Progressive" era.

It is my honor to teach the first class, "The American Mind," and the final class, "The Recovery of the Constitution." All of the classes will be taught by Hillsdale College professors - the top teachers in their field and the same ones who instruct our students here on Hillsdale's campus.

Valley Forge Patriots

Come join us Patriots March 9, Phoenixville Country Club!!!

WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA!?

Join us at our next meeting and find out and learn how you can help! Come out and meet two great conservatives who are running in the April 24 primary. Roger Howard is challenging Senator Pileggi for the PA Senate seat in the 9th District and Chris Amentas is challenging Senator Dinniman for the 19th District PA Senate seat.

Roger believes that the Republican leadership in the Senate is not living up the the reforms that were promised in the 2010 elections and that they continue to do business as usual. He will work to restore the respect and trust of the people for the PA Senate. Let him tell us how.

Chris Amentas is a fiscal and social conservative who believes strong and responsible economic policies benefit everyone. He feels that politicians in Harrisburg seem unwilling to make the difficult choices needed to restore economic stability and jobs. Let's learn more.

As you know, we have Republicans in the Governor's seat, in the Senate and in the House yet nothing seems to be getting done. The House has passed numerous important bills that die in the Senate including the Voter ID Bill, HB934. Help change things by meeting these outstanding candidates and supporting them in the coming elections.

Also, Nate Benfield, Director of Policy Analysis for the Commonwealth Foundation will provide discussion on Governor Corbett's new budget proposal. Nate will give the Budget Background, a Historical Spending and Budget Process overview; long term threats to the budget, how to "Fireproof the economy" solutions and policy recommendations.

The more we know, the better prepared we will be to send our message to Harrisburg: smaller government, fiscal responsibility, free markets, and Constitutional government.

Please find attached a Sam Rohrer flyer that I would like you to mark on your calendars and also to pass on the flyer to your family, friends and neighbors.  Rob and I would like to give Sam a "warm welcome" to Lower Bucks.  This is another U.S. Senate candidate that we are introducing to the community.  I have asked Bob Casey to come to one of our meetings, and his staff declined. If you are able, please sign up on my events page.  If you aren't on Facebook, please let me know if you will be attending and how many.  I want to have a headcount for refreshments.

We appreciate our pastor allowing us to use the church to introduce a candidate to the community.

Any questions, please email me.

Sam is the only life-long Constitutional Republican with a consistent voting history in this race who can win. Two of the current candidates were Democrats until recently. That's not good enough.

He is a proud Reagan conservative. Sam served for 18 years in the PA House, and he has never made an unconstitutional vote. He was never afraid to stand up to leadership in Harrisburg, and that won't change when he goes to Washington.

Become educated so you can make the right decision at the polls on Primary Day, April 24th.

Limited Parking at the Church; parking on side streets. Light Refreshments will be served in the Fellowship Hall at 8:30. All are welcome!!

Americans for Prosperity

hand off jy health care!March 23rd, 2012, marks an important and unfortunate anniversary. It will have been exactly two years since President Obama forced his unpopular health care takeover onto the American people. Americans for Prosperity has educated the public about the dangers of government interference in the health care market for the past several years, and now the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments and make a ruling on that very issue. As you are most likely aware, the U.S. Supreme Court will be considering the constitutionality of several elements of the President's health care bill. This may be our best chance to overturn this offense against our health care freedoms. That's why Americans for Prosperity will be hosting a Hands Off My Health Care rally for free-market grassroots activists from across the country at the Supreme Court on March 27th. Details can be found below.

Americans for Prosperity - Pennsylvania will host bus rides to DC from the following locations:

  • Dolyestown
  • Harrisburg/York
  • King of Prussia
  • Lancaster
  • Media
  • Middletown
  • Pittsburgh

Hands Off My Health Care Rally

The United States Supreme Court, Washington, D.C.
March 27th at 1:00PM

Over the past few years, Americans for Prosperity has been the premier grassroots group educating the public on the dangers of the President's health care bill. AFP's Hands Off My Health Care Tour criss-crossed the nation in 2009 hosting over 300 events and rallies. Then, in late 2009, over 5,000 activists gathered for AFP's Code Red Rally in Washington.

We must remind the Court and all of Washington that the President's health care takeover is an affront to free-market principles and our Constitution. Not only is the individual mandate unconstitutional, but it forces consumers to enter the health insurance market against their will. Click here to read more about the individual mandate.

Kitchen Table Patriots

Sometimes when you stand up to the establishment,
it doesn't always go well.
Bunker Hill - A rabble of patriots up against the most powerful force on the planet. Yea, they lost, but they let the British know that they were a force to be reckoned with.
But that does not mean it is not worth the fight.

There are two ways of interpreting the decision by the Republican State Committee to endorse candidates on Saturday, January 28 at their winter meeting:
  1. The State committee is completely out of touch with the Republican base and especially the grassroots activists (Tea Party) that we should have no respect for them at all.
  2. The fact that there was even a discussion about the appropriateness of endorsing candidates for the primary and that the vote was 200 in favor and 142 against is a sign that the grassroots are beginning the process of changing the political process in Pennsylvania.

We are inclined to believe the second interpretation. As much as we would have liked to have had the PA GOP agree to not endorse and the fact that there was an effort to prevent grassroots leaders from even being in the PA GOP meeting.

There were a dozen or so stories in local media about the controversy over the endorsement process. Here are links to just a few:

There were many grassroots groups that protested the matter (A letter that was given to the Chairman of the PA GOP from these groups is available here). There was also a press conference and a demonstration at the winter meeting.

Does anyone remember anything like this when Pat Toomey ran against Arlen Specter?

We are making a difference. But in order to make a real difference, we need people to get involved in their local committees. To get on the ballot requires 10 signatures from your precinct. We can help with that process. What we need are principled people who are willing to work not only from the outside, but also from the inside where these decisions are made.

Local committee seats are filled during the primary every two years.

State committee seats are filled every four years.

Become a local committee person now ow sign up to work to get a candidate elected now.

We can build a base and run candidates in 2014 for State committee.

This is a long process. We need not only principled individuals, but those with the perseverance to hold on for the long haul.

Here is how Jaime Faucette from Citizens for Constitutional Government put it to a committee person who was thinking of resigning over the issue:

We are not defeated. This was not the war. This was only one battle. And we will persevere to fight another day, and another, and another, committee seat by committee seat, State Committee seat by State Committee seat, in each of our boroughs, townships, and counties, whittling away little by little at this mammoth power structure until in time it crumbles - IF we don't quit now.

The atmosphere is changing. YOU ARE CHANGING IT. But more change is needed.

Here is the way another tea party activist put it:

The people of the movement need to be reminded of what they worked so hard for and this is the time to stand up and "fight the system". This fight is a good thing. It demonstrates true debate and resolution (like how the framers fought over the writing of the constitution) when was the last time we saw Democrats fight over what was best for the people?

There are glimmers of hope. There is a cut in the fabric of "politics as usual".

It will take time to pull back the veil. Grab a knife and grab hold.

WE (that includes YOU) can do this.

Here is the beginning of the letter from the conservative grassroots leaders presented to Chairman Gleason:

Rob Gleason

Chairman, Republican Party of Pennsylvania

112 State Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101

Friday, January 27, 2012

Chairman Gleason,

As grassroots conservative leaders, we are all united in our desire to defeat President Obama and Senator Casey. We were excited by the resounding Republican victories in 2010 and 2011 and the conservative message these candidates espoused.

We are concerned that the Republican State Committee is seeking to make an endorsement in the hotly contested U.S. Senate primary. We believe this would be a mistake as there are many strong candidates in this race.

If you are willing to stand on a street corner with a sign or go to a Townhall meeting and tell politicians how you feel, then you should consider running for your local Republican Committee
NOW

The Kitchen Table Patriots is looking to help the

Thomas Jefferson: "Whensoever the general government assumes undelegated powers....a nullification of the act is the rightful remedy."

But what IS nullification? How does it happen and work? Since September 2010, the Tenth Amendment Center has been hosting a national tour to educate and activate people on this topic. People are learning the constitutional basis, when it's been used in history, and how it is happening around the country and how YOU can stop DC right in your own state.

A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress

Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:

  • Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
  • Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
  • Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care

The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

Lou Flanagan, House Bill 934: Voter ID

"My state Rep. Warren Kampf responded to my question about where the Voter ID bill stands in Harrisburg. His response appears at end of this emaiI. It seems clear that unless we apply pressure to the state senate government committee, this bill will go nowhere.
My questions for them are: Where do you stand on the bill? What are you doing to move it out of committee? If you oppose it, tell me why. Who on the committee is against it, and why?

Louis:
Thank you for the email regarding Voter ID (House Bill 934).
The House passed Voted ID on June 23rd. I voted for this bill if you will remember. It is now the responsibility of the Senate to take action to continue to move HB 934 forward.
I would advise you to contact the Senators who comprise the Senate State Government Committee, those in Senate leadership positions and your local Senator to let them know of your desire to move this forward. Also you may ask for an accounting of why this has been held up and not considered.
Please let me know if I can help with other state-related matters.

Voter Cheating

You know, comrades," says Stalin, "that I think in regard to this: I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this - who will count the votes, and how. (Boris Bazhanov's Memoirs of Stalin's Former Secretary,1992, only available in Russian.
Russia's Vladimir Putin is accused of voter fraud and failure to solve problems with health care availability, immigration control, and unsustainable pensions. Sound familiar? Absolutely. Will he lie? Absolutely. But unlike Obama's ACORN, he will probably admit it.

Background

There are several lines of independent evidence for cheating in the 2012 election:

a)     12/30/11, Voter ID: PA House Bill 934

Eric Holder has ordered his staff not to meddle with cases of voter fraud that involve minorities (J. Christian Adams has written widely about such cases), Salina Zito (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review) predicted that PA in November '12 will go according to the Philadelphia suburbs, ACORN has both a record for voter scams and operates new sites in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, our State Attorney General is stepping aside, and there is little public information about Mayor Nutter's views on this matter. Meanwhile, there is an early February deadline from our Governor as Republicans in the PA legislature attempt to define a list of acceptable IDs and Democrats cry that minorities and old people can't handle this demand.
I smell more fraud from a bunch- ACORN - already known nationally for fraud and Corbett's February deadline invites some deliberate lapse by the D's...And intrusion by Eric Holder would stall our ID program until after ACORN has done their job for BO ...

b)     Jeffrey Kuhner, Washington Times: BO & Voter ID

"...South Carolina's legislation provides for free ID cards to be given to anyone who needs it. Not one person - white, black or brown - is discriminated against or discouraged from casting a vote at the ballot box. Moreover, the Supreme Court already has ruled on the issue - upholding state voter ID laws. In the 2008 Crawford v. Marion County Election Board decision, the high court held that an Indiana law mandating photo identification at the voting booth was indeed constitutional. If it is good enough for the Supreme Court and the overwhelming majority of the states, then it should be for Mr. Holder as well.
"It isn't. And the reason is simple: The administration is trying to whip up minority frenzy, propagating the myth of widespread ballot suppression..."

c)      Daryl Metcalf, Morning Call: Electoral Integrity (June 18, 2011)

Metcalf is a Republican from Butler County (north of Pittsburgh)
"Pennsylvania has a long and ongoing history of documented voter fraud - pre-dating even the frequently forged signature of Mickey Mouse to at least the election of 1918.
"Of course, no statewide analysis of voter fraud would be complete without briefly documenting the deeply rooted influence of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

d)     Christopher Freind, PA Water Cooler:  No ID, No Vote,... Comprende? (June 21, 2011)

"I am not wealthy, but have recently acquired twenty two domiciles throughout Philadelphia. My real estate prowess has afforded me a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our citizens.
"I can vote twenty-two times.
"You see, I have staked out prime locations, from a cardboard box under the Walt Whitman Bridge to a culvert on Cobbs Creek Parkway to a burnt out shell at 7th and Diamond. Yes, technically, habitating at these locations makes me 'homeless,' but I much prefer the term 'voter-enfranchised.' When you have such a love of democracy, how can anyone have a problem with people who want to vote multiple times, especially the homeless? (Although, in fairness, dead people should only be able to vote once).

e)     11/7/2011, PA ACORN Lives

"Pennsylvania. ACORN PA has become Pennsylvania Communities Organizing for Change (PCOC) and Pennsylvania Neighborhoods for Social Justice (PNSJ).Both were incorporated on January 8, 2010. On July 26, 2010, PCOC filed for another name - Action United - and the organizations now operate under this name. Current board members and staff of these organizations with former ACORN affiliations include:
* Lucille Prater Holliday, chair (ACORN member and Democratic state house candidate)
* Pat Worrell, co-chair (Chester County, PA ACORN chairman)
* Rosa Chacon, secretary/treasurer (ACORN leader in Harrisburg, PA, profiled in
ACORN's 2005 annual report)
* Fabrico Rodriguez, board member (executive director of Philadelphia Jobs with
Justice)
* Craig Robbins, executive director (ACORN regional director in Philadelphia, PA)
* Maryellen Deckard, southwest regional director (head organizer for ACORN PA)
* Jennifer England, communications director (Pittsburg ACORN spokesperson)
Action United is located  at 846 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130 and 5907 Penn Avenue, Pittsburg(h), PA 15206. The Action United website is www.actionunited.org.

There is even a Secretary of State project in which leftist groups attempt to bias state elections so that "liberal" Secretaries of State are elected. http://truethevote.org/news/does-your-vote-really-count; http://truethevote.org/news/what-is-the-secretary-of-state-project.
There must be some benefit to Republicans if they ignore voter fraud. For example, my acquaintance publishes lists of Republicans who take contributions from unions and refusing to vote against union interests. And conservative Lowman Henry has spoken about the legislative impasse, particularly in the State Senate, produced by about twenty-five who get their money from organized labor.
Thus, Nicole Marrone's conclusion is still valid as is Christopher Freind's:
"The city of Philadelphia is known for many things: The Liberty Bell, cheesesteaks, water ice, and Santa Claus-booing Eagles fans. But if research that I conducted in 2006 is still accurate today, Philadelphia should also be known for all-inclusive voting - that is, voting regardless of whether one has a pulse or is otherwise eligible to cast a vote..." http://pjmedia.com/blog/small-sample-of-philly-voter-rolls-reveals-hundreds-of-ineligible-names-pjm-exclusive/
There is a bright light on our horizon even though Salena Zito asserted that Pennsylvania electoral votes will depend on turn out in the Philadelphia suburbs:

"Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter didn't mince words after four kids were shot and three killed in Philadelphia Tuesday night.
"The first way to stop this kind of stuff is for young people to be home when they're supposed to be home, and for adults not to act like idiots and assholes out in the streets of our city shooting at kids in a car," Nutter told FOX 29...
A spokesperson for the mayor told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Nutter stood by his statement.
"He said what he said. He was clear about it, and he meant it. He said what everybody else was thinking," said spokesman Mark McDonald..."
http://dailycaller.com/2012/01/12/philly-mayor-dont-act-like-idiots-and-assholes/

What are Mayor Mike's reactions to fraud? Does he value "value" above "deals"?
Meanwhile, many Pennsylvanians look to Harrisburg to pass a "Voter ID" law that requires each of us to carry a card with our photo and address on it. Our Governor also says that he needs the law in place by the first week of February if it is to be used this coming November.
On the other hand, I recall my son's friends in college fattening their wallets by selling bogus photo ID to students who wanted to buy liquor. I'm sure ACORN knows how to do such things.
The ID cards will make cheating a bit more difficult and more expensive for organizers and possibly, but not necessarily, less frequent. And the rest of us will pay the bills for cheaters...

PA implementing ObamaCare exchanges

I wanted to update you on the exchange situation.  First, unfortunately we are getting started late in the game.  Having spoken with 4 different legislators (Rep Saylor, Boyd, Bear, and Sen Waugh), I believe the general sense on their part is that they want to be prepared to set up an exchange if SCOTUS doesn't  declare ObamaCare unconstitutional.

Their reasoning for supporting the exchange is that PA will have more control if PA sets up the exchange rather than the feds.  We have been arguing that in fact: the exchange structure and operation is dictated by the feds, through law and regulation, regardless if the state sets it up or not; that whatever little "control" a PA would have does not mitigate any of the true horrors of the law; establishing the exchange legitimizes PPACA and undercut PA's federal lawsuit against PPACA, creates more PA expense and government, scedes state sovereignty, misses an opportunity to block the law and to have standing for further legal action.  (please see attached documents if you want more explanation).

We have more legislator visits planned, but it is clear to me that none of the legislators thus far will take on this fight.  We must generate the grass roots response to move them to do so.  It is disgusting that our Republican Governor and legislature can't pass meaningful right to work legislation, LCB reform, PA TPK Commission reform, school reform, etc but unless we respond in a big way, will make PA government bigger, make PA government poorer, harm PA citizen liberty and health by implementing an exchange.

I have contacted Campaign for Liberty to see if they are interested in coordinating efforts to stop the exchange.  I will also contact the PA Manufacturer's Association and the Chamber of Commerce, both of whom support repeal of PPACA, also for potential coordination of activities.

We are working on an on-line petition rejecting PPACA and the exchanges for PA physicians to sign and ultimately deliver by several physicians to Harrisburg.

On Wednesday, I participated in a debate put on by the Lehigh Valley Coalition for Health Care Reform (Donna Rovito).  Leo Knepper and I presented the anti-exchange positition while a rep from the PA Dept of Insurance and Dr Schmeltz of the PA Medical Society presented the for pro position.  For what it is worth, I believe we had the more compelling argument.

I welcome any thought you all have.

This exchange is going to happen unless we act together in a big way.

Americans for Prosperity

We have an amazing opportunity before us today, to score a BIG WIN for taxpayers and small businesses...but we can't do it without your help!

Please click here to send an email to your Representative and tell him or her to vote yes on the prevailing wage reform bills before the House today!

At 1pm, our PA Legislators are voting to amend the prevailing wage laws that have long favored unions and hurt working families and small businesses!

Could you please email your legislator right now and ask him or her to vote YES on two prevailing wage reform bills: H.B. 1329 ("Threshold") and H.B. 1685 ("Jobs Classification")?

Our politicians must not only hear from the unions...they must hear from YOU and I...the people who bear the burden of paying for these bills!

Here's a quick overview of the bills:

The "Jobs Classification Bill" will require Pennsylvania to define job classifications on public works projects. The lack of definitions has been used by some unions to attack and file frivolous grievances against small business owners, costing Pennsylvania jobs and tax dollars.

The "threshold bill" will end the artificially low estimated cost of total project from $25,000 to conform to the Consumer Price Index of the previous calendar year. The current amount was based on the 1963 Consumer Price Index and allowed prevailing wage to kick in at too low a threshold making it a costly endeavor for school districts and municipalities to fund minor projects.

Will you please ask your legislator to vote "YES" to H.B. 1329 ("Threshold") and H.B. 1685 ("Jobs Classification")? Don't miss this chance to score a win for the taxpayers and small businesses of Pennsylvania!

Thank you for all your hard work!

In Liberty and Solidarity,

Jennifer Stefano

PS - These two bills are going on our legislative scorecard and every Representative will be graded on their vote.

RedState

RedState Morning Briefing

For February 15, 2012

1. The Competitive Disadvantage of Principle

If you have not read it, this is a fascinating article in the New York Times. The crux of the article is the title - even critics of the safety net increasingly depend on it.

The article profiles a number of people who take advantage of the federal social safety net and are increasingly resentful of it. The solutions on fixing it vary. The angry, for some, may or may not be misplaced. The article reads as a Rorschach test on your ideology - liberals will read it and find the people hypocritical. Conservatives will read it and find it all maddening.

To summarize it, the United States is increasingly taxing the middle class to subsidize the middle class. All the talk about the poor and what the safety net is designed to do for the poor overlooks that the government has taken it upon itself to keep the middle class from falling into the poorer classes of society.

It is a long held principle in this country that the individual is supreme above the collective and the government. Tied to that is the principle espoused by Abraham Lincoln back in Kalamazoo, MI back in 1856, that in this country, unlike so many others, "every man can make himself." It is less and less true.

More and more, the Middle Class has become dependent on the federal social safety net. It was a slow and creeping dependence the Middle Class did not recognize until it was too late. Now suddenly their principles have come into conflict with their lifestyle.

The Middle Class believes that with hard work it can move up the ranks of society. It is not content to and does not expect to stay in the Middle Class. At the same time, the Middle Class recognizes its current dependency. It also recognizes that if it does break through it will be despised by government. Even more troubling, it does not know how to break through. Due to lobbyists, regulators, and legislators, the process of inventiveness and creativity has been shut down.

2. The Demise of the Tea Party is Greatly Exaggerated

Certain people keep opining that the Tea Party is all but dead, but those who wish for the demise of the Tea Party are missing the emerging new political infrastructure where Tea Party groups have set aside rallies for political action. Consider Wisconsin to determine where the Tea Party is going in 2012 and beyond.

From New York to California, newspapers are weighing in on the importance of Governor Scott Walker's recall in Wisconsin. Stephen Moore in the Wall Street Journal described it as "the most important non-presidential election of the decade." The Orange County Register even penned an editorial about how important it was that the public unions are stopped in Wisconsin.

3. The Highway Bill and ANWR: It's a Trap!

Well, it appears that our efforts are paying off. Responding to our charge that the GOP was violating the pledge against bundled megabills, Boehner announced that he will split the proposal into three separate bills; the highway bill (HR 7), pension reform (HR 3813), and expanded oil and gas drilling (HR 3408).

This is great news. But here's the catch.

4. Beware Greeks Demanding Benefits

In the most recent round of violent protests that have rocked Greece, a group of aggrieved Communist party members went up onto the Acropolis and hung banners from the massive rock. "Down with Dictatorship" they proclaimed (in English as well as in Greek for the benefit of the western media and/or relevant parties in London and Washington, D.C.).

The message was not particularly subtle: Here, in the birthplace of democracy, Greeks would once again stand up to their oppressors and claim their ancient freedoms. At the very feet of the Parthenon they made their stand, with the ruins of the classical past providing witness.

The juxtaposition between the "birthplace of democracy" and Greece's current budget woes has been echoed in the media, illustrated with video of Athenians torching Starbucks and Cinnabon. What this analysis fails to recognize is that the contemporary Greeks are rejecting their own heritage as they riot not for freedom, but against it.

5. CPAC: Not Quite Like the Media Matters Communications Room. But Still, Grow Up.

Stephen Glass was a fabulist. He made up stories and eventually he was caught. I read somewhere he wants to be a lawyer now, but his contrition is in doubt.

One of the things he made up was a story on CPAC. He may have made it up, but I think he got it right nonetheless.

After RedState got started in July of 2004, blogging on the right became all the rage, though it was correlation and not causation. By 2005, CPAC had a Bloggers Row and I went for my first time. The event was held that year at the Reagan Center in Washington, D.C. Most of the attendees stayed across the street at the JW Marriott. It was not an ideal venue, but it was my first time and I did not know better.

Being the good, intrepid blogger, I ran across the street to a CVS to buy a notepad, having left mine in my office back in Macon, GA. There in line were a half dozen young men, each with CPAC credentials around their necks and each buying condoms.

Featuring 113 primary source documents, The U.S. Constitution: A Reader was developed for teaching the core course on the U.S. Constitution at Hillsdale College.

Divided into eleven sections with introductions by members of Hillsdale's Politics Department faculty, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.

About Hillsdale College

Hillsdale College is a private, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college with approximately 1,400 students. Founded in 1844, the College remains, in the words of its Articles of Association, "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the presence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety" in our nation, and dedicated to "the diffusion of sound learning" that is "essential to the perpetuity of these blessings."

Hillsdale College is distinguished by its rigorous core curriculum, by its principled rejection of federal and state taxpayer funding, and by the pledge of its Board of Trustees to resists any attempts by the government to regulate its internal affairs.

Hillsdale College promotes the principles of liberty nationwide through its national speech digest, Imprimis, which has a monthly circulation of over 2 million, and through several outreach programs. In 2008, Hillsdale launched its Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. The College will also launch the Hillsdale Graduate School of Statesmanship in fall 2012.

U.S.-Israel Differences on Iran Threaten Security

Washington, D.C. (February 14, 2012) -- The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) expressed deep concern today over indications that the Obama administration is asking Israel to risk its security and survival to advance U.S. policy toward Iran, without providing assurances that the U.S. will protect Israel if the Iranian nuclear threat materializes.

RJC Executive Director Matthew Brooks said:

The Obama administration has strongly urged Israel to hold back from taking military action to derail or destroy the Iranian nuclear project. Israel, which has a much shorter and earlier window of opportunity than the U.S. to act militarily   to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran, is being asked to sit on the sidelines while the U.S. pursues sanctions and diplomatic outreach.

There are reports that Israel has asked Pres. Obama for assurance that if sanctions fail, he will use force against Iran. Pres. Obama's has refused to provide that assurance, which has damaged the long-standing trust and cooperation between the two countries.

In addition, Pres. Obama's 2013 budget request, released yesterday, calls for a sharp cut in U.S. military aid for Israel's critical missile defense programs. Cutting critical funds for missile defense at a time when the threat from Iran has never been greater is extremely dangerous, worrisome and reckless.

The President's actions are at odds with his words. His expectation that Israel should withhold action against Iran to meet an American policy timetable, while Iran moves demonstrably closer to the ability to annihilate Israel, is at odds with common sense. The Obama administration should make clear our commitment to Israel's security and to our joint efforts to prevent Iran from achieving a game-changing nuclear capability that will threaten not just Israel, but the U.S. as well.

Act! for America

February 14, 2012

Rep. King
standing fast

During the legislative briefing portion of our national conference back in 2010, ACT! for America Executive Director Guy Rodgers explained "the power of the gavel."

He told conference attendees that the political party in the majority in Congress holds a great deal of power with respect to everything from what bills get introduced in committees to what bills get a vote on the floor. It's called "the power of the gavel."

When Republicans won control of the House in 2010, the chairmanships of all the House committees were turned over to Republicans. Rep. Peter King became chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee-and a new day dawned as he addressed issues, such as Muslim radicalization, that previously hadn't seen the light of day.

Last year Rep. King was one of the recipients at our national conference of our Patriot award for his courage and effectiveness in fighting for our national security. Below you'll see his priorities for this year. Rep. King continues to stand fast in the face of the baseless attacks he has received from organizations like CAIR.

This year's National Conference & Legislative Briefing will be June 27 to 29 in Washington, DC. The fact that many of our attendees each year are repeat attendees says it all. If you've never attended, this is an event you'll never forget. Click here to find out more and to register.

King Releases Homeland Panel Priorities for 2012

By CQ Staff

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter T. King released a list of his priorities for the panel in the coming year, leading off with one of its most controversial hearing topics from 2011: Muslim radicalization in America.

The New York Republican's series of domestic radicalization hearings, which covered topics including terrorist recruiting on the Internet and in prisons, as well as the role of Muslim community leaders and organizations in speaking out against violence. The sessions drew criticism from panel Democrats, civil liberties organizations and Muslim advocacy groups. King and several of his fellow GOP panelists, however, called them productive and Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joseph I. Lieberman, I-Conn., agreed to hold a joint hearing in December on the potential threat of radicalization among members of the U.S. military.

"In 2012, we will continue the Committee's focus on critical counterterrorism issues, just as I promised to do when I was selected as chairman," King said. "The series of radicalization hearings I convened last March has been very productive, and I will definitely continue the hearings in 2012. The committee will also examine a number of additional homeland security issues and will move legislation necessary to secure our homeland from the terrorists who continue to plot attacks against us."

His office said that legislation will include bills covering authorization for the Department of Homeland Security and its components - a goal the chairman has set in previous years - and cybersecurity. The House Homeland subcommittee that handles cybersecurity approved a bill (HR 3674) from its chairman, California Republican Dan Lungren, earlier this month.

King's other priorities are:

  • Studying the presence and activities in the United States of Iran's intelligence services, as well as groups such as Hezbollah and al Qaeda.
  • Probing money from Islamist groups that comes into the United States.
  • Examining potential leaks of classified information regarding sensitive counterterrorism operations.
  • Obtaining Purple Heart medals for military servicemembers hurt of killed during the 2009 shooting attacks at Fort Hood, Texas, and at recruiting stations. Currently, those events are considered criminal matters under military policy and ineligibles for Purple Hearts, as King's and Lieberman's committees discussed last year.
  • Investigating the possible roles that the deceased al-Qaeda head Anwar al-Awlaki and current seniors leaders Daoud Chehazeh and Eyad al-Rababah, may have played the attacks of September 11, 2001.
  • Studying security preparations for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
  • Assessing whether enemy veterans of conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia pose dangers to the U.S. homeland.
  • Ensuring the protection of U.S. security contractors in Afghanistan and Iraq.
  • Monitoring emerging threats to the homeland;
  • Continuing close examination of the Department of Homeland Security's operations, policies, and programs.

Lawfare - the Legal Warfare

By Online Tabitha Korol Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Islam is at war with the West, using unconventional weapons that keep Europe and America in ignorance or denial. These were the WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction) that Islam had all along, but that we failed to recognize.

Islam and its destruction of the many cultures that once existed in the Middle East began in earnest, with uncompromising hostility and justification for violence, when Mohammad's religious righteousness was repudiated by the Jews and Christians of Mecca and Medina in the 7th century. Islam's jihad activities continue their brutality to this day, with terrorist activities worldwide. THEY ARE COMMANDED to conquer non-Muslims, usurp land, destroy antiquities, remove all remnants of the indigenous history, and slaughter rampantly.

Where their violence would not succeed, Muslims have invaded by emigration as though to live harmoniously with their hosts, and have conquered by shunning assimilation and demanding special accommodations. Their sophisticated propaganda machine accuses their innocent hosts of a variety of offenses, using "Islamophobia," a politically manipulative accusation designed to intimidate critics into silence, curbing the very terminology needed to report their activities.

Chris Christie Leads on Israel

By Dennis Prager
February 14, 2012

New Jersey governor Chris Christie addressed the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) last week. In the few words reported by The Weekly Standard, he said just about everything one needs to know about Israel, about its relationship with the U.S., and about American political leadership:

America should stand by its friends and its democratic allies, even, and sometimes especially, when it's unpopular to do so.

It may not be fashionable in some of the chancelleries, the foreign ministries, and salons around the world to talk about why America stands with Israel - but that's no excuse not to be saying, and saying it loudly, I admire Israel for the enemies it has made.

Americans and Israelis believe - we know deep in our bones - that if the Islamic Republic of Iran acquired a nuclear-weapons capability, it will be an existential threat to Israel, to America, and to world civilization itself.

A threat to Israel is a threat to America. A threat to the Israeli way of life is a threat to the American way of life. Not only for here in America, but for all the nations that emulate our democracy or are trying to emulate our democracy around the world.

Stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear-weapons capability must be a top priority of the United States of America. Any president, Republican or Democrat, who allows such a thing to occur on his watch would be acting in a way that is profoundly against the national security interests of the United States and the security interests of our friends in Israel.

Obama Mulls 80 Percent Disarmament of Nuclear Arsenal

Tuesday, 14 Feb 2012

The Obama administration is weighing options for sharp new cuts to the U.S. nuclear force, including a reduction of up to 80 percent in the number of deployed weapons, The Associated Press has learned.

Even the most modest option now under consideration would be an historic and politically bold disarmament step in a presidential election year, although the plan is in line with President Barack Obama's 2009 pledge to pursue the elimination of nuclear weapons.

Sean Stone - H 2012

Sean Stone, son of controversial director Oliver Stone, converted to Islam in Iran on Tuesday.

The ceremony was held in Isfahan, the third largest city in the country, where Stone -- a 27-year-old filmmaker following in his father's foosteps -- is shooting a documentary.

Stone, who made cameos in a handful of his dad's movies as a child, is now a Shiite Muslim with the chosen name, Ali, according to reports.

"The conversion to Islam is not abandoning Christianity or Judaism, which I was born with," he told news outlet AFP, via Yahoo News. "It means I have accepted Mohammad and other prophets."

The Liberal Uses of Race

Racism is about many things but it isn't about race. To understand the uses of race in American liberalism requires understanding its place in the political culture. When American liberals speak of race they aren't speaking in the genetic sense, what they are doing is clumsily piggybacking class onto race and adding one dubious construct to another.

The placement of racial politics at the center of liberal advocacy coincided with a growing national prosperity that seemed to be on the way to making class warfare of the old kind irrelevant. Previous liberal civil rights activity had been a subset of class, but class now became a subset of race. And both were a means of liberal self-definition as the people concerned with the plight of the downtrodden.

Class warfare was not really about the poor, it was about using a permanent social problem as a means of recreating the social order and gaining permanent political power. Race is just class dressed up in the same old class warfare clothes so that there is nearly no distinction between the two. Reformers gain power by attacking the failures of the system and positioning a social problem as an open sore that must be healed. But it isn't healing that they have in mind.

When your power is a product of social problems then the failure to locate social problems that are an open sore on society, a cry of conscience and a grievous crime that must be faced, leaves you powerless and irrelevant. Once you start running out of legitimate social problems to tackle, then you have no choice but to start creating them or exaggerating them. Whether the problems you are dealing with are real or unreal, your challenge is to find ways to make them worse in order to retain your power and the social relevance of your movement.

Race has very little to do with racial politics which rely on the older methodologies of radicalizing slums and using subsidies to elevate community leaders who will support the reformers, all tactics that date back centuries and long predate the politicization of race.

When the Democratic Party had its change of heart on race all it did was take the same methods it used on German, Irish, Jewish and Italian immigrants and shift them to urban African-Americans who had come north and were living in the same neighborhoods formerly occupied by the immigrants. And so the party that during the Civil War orchestrated urban anti-draft riots by white immigrants targeting African-Americans was using the same methods to orchestrate African-American riots aimed at the second and third generation of working class immigrants that it had once fostered. What most people thought of as racial politics was just the Democratic Party doing what it had been doing all along.

The all have defects; so can a brokered convention be the answer?

Feb 14, 2012 05:13 am | Coach Collins

By Ron Reale

Those who scoff at Newt Gingrich's plans for space should keep in mind similar arguments were made against John Kennedy when he proposed his moon quest.

JFK had a cold war going on, but still saw the necessity of going to space.

Today, our President will face China in the race to a moon base.

Does anyone really want China controlling space from a militarized moon base? Or controlling all the minerals available on the moon?

Along with the great idea proposed by Rick Santorum concerning Manufacturing companies and Capital Gains taxes, a US/China "base race" would make America's economy take off like a rocket.

Between the manufacturing jobs created throughout the country and NASA in the southern states building our own moon base facilities, and those spurred by re-invigorating the American oil industry by creating the Keystone pipeline and allowing drilling, (and frakking) in the US and off ... It's not just forced abortion coverage; Obamacare includes several dangers to our liberties

Feb 13, 2012 01:13 pm | Coach Collins

By Kevin "Coach" Collins

Forcing us to buy health insurance and pay for abortions whether our conscience will allow it or not are not the only dangerous elements of Obamacare.

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) has examined the bill and provided its opinion of what is wrong and dangerous about Obamacare. Here are the AFP's observations.

It's partially true that healthcare will be rationed. Cost limitations are mandated and will be enforced.

It is true that a committee of government bureaucrats will decide what treatments you can receive with no appeals accepted.

Despite doubletalk to the contrary healthcare costs for ACORN the SEIU the UAW and other unions WILL be subsidized by you. And remember the Obama Administration will be keeping the books so "favored" organizations will NEVER run out of our money.

Yes ACORN will directly benefit from this scheme (don't listen to the liberal line that "ACORN does not dispense healthcare so how can ... Continue Reading:It's not just forced abortion coverage; Obamacare includes several dangers to our liberties

U.S. appeals court hears challenge to Prop 209

Gov. Brown overturns the will of his own people...again

Advocates for minority students, backed by Gov. Jerry Brown, implored a federal appeals court Monday to reconsider California's voter-approved ban on affirmative action based on race or gender preferences in education and state hiring.

Although the courts have upheld Proposition 209 as a race-neutral measure, it has caused the "resegregation of higher education," attorney Shanta Driver, chairwoman of an organization challenging the 1996 ballot initiative, told the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

Two fears drive fight on photo ID

Minnesota GOP fighting against this

A high-stakes political struggle over requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls is erupting in Minnesota, conjuring up emotional precedents from the notorious Jim Crow poll taxes to the old Chicago admonition to "vote early and often."

The determined Republican drive to pass a photo ID constitutional amendment as a needed deterrent to fraud -- and the equally strong DFL effort to oppose it as a partisan ploy to suppress votes -- has turned the ordinary driver's license into a symbol of our national divide.

"Simply put," Frisch wrote, "the progressive movement is in need of an enemy. George W. Bush is gone. We really don't have John McCain to kick around any more. Filling the lack of leadership on the right, Fox News has emerged as the central enemy and antagonist of the Obama administration, our Congressional majorities and the progressive movement as a whole."

The Hypocrisy Of Hollywood's Whitney Houston Sorrow
By Ben Shapiro

The Grammys last night led off with a prayer delivered by noted religious thinker LL Cool J. "For me, the only thing that feels right begins with a prayer - for a woman who we loved. For our fallen sister, Whitney Houston," he said. "Today our thoughts are with her mother, her daughter and all of her loved ones. We are truly blessed to be touched by her beautiful music." It was a nice moment. But it was also a problematic moment, because the same industry that was now bowing its head in prayer enabled Houston to become the troubled addict who died over the weekend.

More proof that Muslims and gays represent the protected class in entertainment. Not that anyone in Hollywood has the iconoclast spirit required to satirize either group, but had they in the same way the Grammys "satirized" the Catholic Church last night, both CAIR and GLAAD would've already exploded in a fit of indignation. CBS, the Grammys and all those involved would've already apologized, and the same re-education camp Tracy Morgan, Brett Ratner and Roland Martin have been forced--invited--to attend, would now be inviting Nicki Minaj into the fold.

COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 266 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS

Santorum Surging

Santorum's surge is real. Three national polls released in the past 24 hours have Senator Rick Santorum essentially tied or leading Governor Mitt Romney in the Republican presidential contest. As a result, Santorum has overtaken Romney in the RealClearPolitics.com average of polls.

And here is why Santorum's surge is real: According to an analysis of the CBS/New York Times poll, "Mr. Santorum's bump is largely fueled by increased support from self-described conservatives, evangelical Christians and Tea Party supporters." These voters are the base of Republican Party. Until recently, they had been divided. But if they coalesce around one candidate, this race will look considerably different.

Here is another point to consider. Looking at the breakdown of a recent Michigan poll where Santorum was leading Romney one political analyst observed, "Perhaps the most interesting aspect ... is the stark divide it shows in the level of voter commitment to the candidates." In the poll, Santorum was running 11 points ahead of Mitt Romney among "definite voters."

These findings should give the party establishment second thoughts about the entire "electability" argument. How does the party win if its nominee does not motivate its most committed supporters? Rick Santorum motivates. Mitt Romney still has a hard time getting an emotional reaction from grassroots conservatives.

Obama's Budget Breakdown

Today's Wall Street Journal breaks down Obama's latest budget proposal. Here are some facts to share with your friends as they consider whether Obama deserves another term.

  • The four years of Obama's first term will represent "the four highest spending years since 1946." In other words, the country hasn't spent this much money as a percentage of our GDP in any four-year period since World War II.
  • Obama's presidency is defined by deficit spending. For four years in a row, Obama's spending has produced deficits in excess of $1.29 trillion -- a historic first.
  • Meanwhile, the Journal notes that "revenues [are] at historic lows because of the mediocre recovery," a recovery hampered by Obama's regulatory assault on virtually every major industry, constant attempts to raise taxes and the uncertainty created by ObamaCare.
  • "All of this has added an astonishing $5 trillion in debt in a single presidential term."
  • Lastly, Obama's budget proposes to raise taxes on individuals, businesses and families earning more than $200,000. "These are the 3% of taxpayers that Mr. Obama says aren't paying their fair share, though that 3% pays more in income tax than the rest of the other 97%."

Keep that last point in mind. As we have repeatedly argued, the problem in Washington is not a lack of revenue, it is too much spending. Just like Bill Clinton, who promised to make the rich "pay their fair share," the Democrats will eventually target the middle class for a big tax hike too. Why? Because there are not enough rich people in America for Obama to tax in order to pay for all his spending.

By the way, don't fall for all the rhetoric about how Obama is going to "soak the rich" to pay for services for the poor. His budget kills the school choice program for inner-city kids in Washington, D.C., while increasing subsidies for "new energy vehicles" like the overpriced Volt from "Government Motors."

America can't afford four more years of Barack Obama!

The Compromise/Cave-In

By now you have probably heard that House Republican leaders have agreed to renew the payroll tax cut without coming up with a way to pay for it now. They accepted this compromise with the White House because they could find no other way to avoid an economic growth-killing tax increase.

While House Republicans wanted to cut spending, Obama and Senate Democrats wanted to raise taxes on entrepreneurs and small businesses. Sadly, the polls show Obama has been winning this debate, and the House GOP leadership didn't want to fight on this ground again.

I can understand why they reached that conclusion. But I suspect they also felt that they would get credit from the media for compromising with Obama. After all, the media have been labeling the GOP "obstructionist" for months. Well, guess what? Every news story today is about how the GOP got rolled by Obama and surrendered.

News flash to our friends on Capitol Hill: You are going to be labeled either "obstructionists" or "cowards." Pick your battles and your retreats carefully.

The Israeli government is blaming the Islamic regime in Tehran and its terrorist proxy, Hezbollah, for these attacks. Defense Minister Ehud Barak said, "We know who carried out the terror attacks, we know who sent them, and Israel will settle the score with them."

Heritage Foundation - Member Briefing

Heritage Experts Respond to Proposed Budget

by Tierra Warren

On Monday, President Obama unveiled his 2013 budget, filled with tax and spending increases.

"The Obama budget submitted Monday all too predictably repeats the stale and unsuccessful policies of the past three years" and increases spending nearly 50 percent over the next decade, The Heritage Foundation's Patrick Knudsen explains.

To no one's surprise, the budget contains a multitude of tax increases that total $1.8 trillion in new levies over 10 years. As Heritage tax expert Curtis Dubay writes,

Included in the President's tax hikes are his old favorites, such as raising tax rates on families making more than $250,000 a year back to their level prior to the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts. President Obama would also curtail their deductions and personal exemptions, hike the capital gains tax to 20 percent (23.8 percent when including the new Obamacare surtax), and raise the death tax.

While cutting critical defense and homeland security funding, the proposed budget increases funding for the Departments of Education, Energy, and Labor.

Heritage's Michaela Bendikova outlines what the budget does to our nation's defenses
:

Under President Obama's policies, the United States would lose vital military capabilities. The Navy might not be able to prevent Iranian aggression in the Strait of Hormuz and safeguard its other interests at sea at the same time. The Coast Guard might not be able to protect U.S. sovereignty at sea and U.S. borders. The U.S. would have to contemplate missions where the Air Force cannot guarantee it can control the skies. The Marines would not have enough ships to deploy their force. The Army would scramble to find the resources to meet all its tasks for training and supporting missions worldwide.

Read responses from other Heritage experts on how the President's budget impacts energy, health care and infrastructure on The Foundry.

The Senate, meanwhile, hasn't passed a budget in over a thousand days.

W
hat do you think of the President's proposed 2013 budget?

Two weeks ago, President Obama proposed a mandate requiring religious institutions to provide health insurance covering contraception, sterilization services and some abortion-inducing drugs.

After intense criticism and backlash from the religious community, who argued the policy trampled religious liberty, President Obama on Friday announced an accommodation that supposedly resolves these concerns. The new proposal will alter the responsibility from the individual employers to the larger insurance companies to provide full contraceptive coverage.

Unfortunately, the President's accommodation stills falls short in addressing the real issue of government interference.

Heritage Work of Note

  • A new chart from The Heritage Foundation shows the dramatic growth in the number of Americans who now depend on the federal government for their livelihoods.Over the past five years, the number of Americans dependent on the federal government has reached a record high of 67.3 million people, about one in five Americans, according to The Heritage Foundation's annual Index of Dependence on Government.
  • "America is now heading down the course taken by Greece and many other countries," The Heritage Foundation's Nile Gardner warned on Fox Business last week. "You don't want America do go down the European path." The solution, he said, is to cut government spending and unwind "the big government mentality" in Washington. Watch the video on myHeritage.

The Grades are in for the Presidents

February 22 is George Washington's birthday. Instead of celebrating the father of our country, we lump him in with the other 43 Presidents call it Presidents' Day. To see that not all Presidents are equal, look no further than the plethora of presidential rankings through the years: it's not a 44-way tie for first place.

This raises the question: how should Presidents be evaluated? Most presidential scholars rank our Presidents according to their experience, vision, and leadership skills. Under such rating systems, Progressive Presidents such as Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson score in the top ten. Abraham Lincoln and George Washington rate highly, but as recently as 2011, still lose the number one position to big government icon FDR.

Shouldn't we evaluate Presidents according to their fidelity to the Constitution instead?

All Presidents pledge to "faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States" and to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." But few evaluators consider the Constitution when rating Presidents: notables examples are Alvin Felzenberg, Forrest McDonald, and Sidney Milkis and Marc Landy. Most recently, in The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Presidents: From Wilson to Obama, Steven Hayward assigns grades of A through F to each President according to a three-part test: 1) the President's constitutional philosophy; 2) his actions as a reflection of the Constitution's limits; 3) his judicial appointments.
Judged by this standard of fidelity to the Constitution, some of the traditionally highly-ranked Presidents fail completely. Woodrow Wilson earns an F, along with FDR, LBJ, Carter, Clinton, and the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Obama.

Our first professor-turned-President, Wilson disdained the Constitution for being a limited government document. Instead he embraced the theory of the "living Constitution" where the document's meaning evolves to meet the needs of the times (as interpreted by the Supreme Court). Wilson saw the President not as an executor the laws, but as a visionary leader who would identify the path of progress and set the pace for the American people to achieve it. He encouraged Americans to shed their affection for the separation of powers and instead embrace bureaucracy and Progress (his campaign speech was entitled "What is Progress?").

Say what you will about Wilson, at least he was upfront about his contempt for the Constitution. FDR cloaked himself in the Founders as he undermined their legacy. FDR claimed that his expansion of government and redefinition of rights were in keeping with the legacy of Thomas Jefferson and his intellectual heirs, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.

Though FDR and Wilson flunk, one President earns an A+-Calvin Coolidge.

Coolidge had a well-developed political philosophy of limited government constitutionalism. He used his rhetorical skills to challenge his progressive contemporaries. He cemented his limited government legacy by cutting taxes and resisting calls for expansive government subsidies and disaster relief. One would expect a Reagan scholar to reserve his highest praise for the Gipper, but Calvin Coolidge's principled constitutionalism earns Hayward's highest grade.

For practical purposes, Hayward analyses Presidents from Wilson onward. But, how would George Washington rate under this rubric? As our first President, Washington set the precedents that define what it means to be a constitutional executive. A strong, energetic President who was aware of the limits on his office, he deferred to Congress when appropriate but aggressively defended his prerogatives when necessary. For instance, Washington exercised his veto power twice, not on policy grounds, but for constitutional reasons. His judicial appointments were top notch: including John Jay, a co-author of the Federalist, and James Wilson, whose Lectures on Law contain some of the period's most profound commentary on the Constitution and American law. There's no doubt that Washington would earn an A+.

This weekend, the historians will no doubt return to the same vacuous criteria to rank Presidents. Coolidge won't receive an A+, Wilson an F, or JFK a gentleman's C. We will probably hear more about leadership and charisma (the swimsuit competition equivalent in presidential rankings). Nevertheless, let's remember that not all Presidents are equal-especially when it comes to their fidelity to the Constitution

Heritage Action for America Action Alert

Call Now: Stop the Spending!

Last week, we told you about a massive $262 billion transportation bill moving through the House. The bill spends far too much, relies on questionable offsets, creates a new slush fund for alternative transportation and maintains unacceptable levels of federal control.

>> Call now: Tell Congress that this spending bill is not acceptable and must be stopped.

Conservatives must remain vigilant on big-spending stimulus bills, especially those that are typically rubber-stamped without much fanfare - like the current bill. Congress must hear your voice, and understand you expect them to honor their word.

>> Call now: Tell your Representative to oppose this transportation spending bill.

Thanks, in advance, for taking action. And be sure to let us know how your call went.

Sincerely,

Russ Vought

Morning Bell: Obama's Continuing Assault on the Constitution

Last week, America erupted in protest against one of those actions - the White House's determination to force all insurance plans to cover, at no charge, contraceptives, abortion-inducing drugs, and sterilization as part of Obamacare. That mandate includes employers like Catholic hospitals, Christian schools, and faith-based pregnancy care centers, all of which must offer the coverage, regardless of their beliefs. This assault on the First Amendment's protection of religious liberties met with opposition from all corners, prompting the president on Friday to address the American people and pledge his commitment to protecting religious liberties by offering an "accommodation" to these institutions - forcing insurance companies to offer free contraception so religious institutions don't have to.

The trouble is, that "accommodation" was merely hypothetical and Obama's commitment to protecting religious liberties was illusory. Obamacare's anti-conscience mandate did not change in a final rule that was posted later that day. And even if the president's hypothetical became reality, Heritage's Jennifer Marshall explains that the religious liberty problem still remains:

Obama's Deceptive, DOA Budget, Part 2

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 10:28 AM PST

(John Hinderaker)

I wrote last night about President Obama's FY 2013 budget, which, accounting frauds to one side, is another dreary blueprint for more taxes, spending and debt. In last night's post, I noted that hardly anyone ever digs out old budget proposals and compares them to the current version. I have now had time to do that, and the results are revealing. In fact, the comparison sums up, in dry columns of numbers, the failure of the Obama administration.

When the story of the Obama administration is written, I think that what will strike historians most forcibly is the arrogance of the president and his aides. That arrogance was on display in Obama's first budget proposal, for FY 2010. That document, was not merely a budget blueprint, it was a mean-spirited political rant. Obama gave his FY 2010 budget proposal a title: "A New Era of Responsibility." It began with a section titled "Inheriting a Legacy of Misplaced Priorities," which was an intemperate attack on the Bush administration:

This is the legacy that we inherit-a legacy of mismanagement and misplaced priorities, of missed opportunities and of deep, structural problems ignored for too long. It's a legacy of irresponsibility, and it is our duty to change it.

Obama's indictment of the Bush administration highlighted budget deficits, which Obama vowed to reduce:

...when you're liberal. That's my bounce on the purported Duluth anti-racism campaign covered in the Star Tribune last week and here yesterday.

We believe in treating people equally without regard to race. Does any one of the white liberals sponsoring the campaign including the Mayor of Duluth believe in equal treatment without regard to race? Does any one of them oppose racial preferences in educational institutions, public or private employment, or anywhere the heavy hand of government holds sway? Not bloody likely.

Liberalism abandoned equal treatment as the reigning principle right around the time Civil Rights Law of 1964 became the law of the land. These are people who see nothing but race and want nothing more than to shove their obsession with it down our throats while letting us know it's all part of the higher wisdom - you really wouldn't understand. Indeed, we don't.

I noted over the weekend that when the Obamacare contraception, sterilization and abortifacient mandate came down, I thought of Professor Paul Rahe and his book Soft Despotism. I thought Professor Rahe had an important contribution to make to the subject of the Obamacare "preventive services" mandate; I asked him if he would write about it. Professor Rahe spoke up not only as a scholar of deep authority on the issues, but also as a member of the Church. Responding to my request, Professor Rahe posted "American Catholicism's pact with the devil." Professor Rahe's post bears reading and rereading.

Indeed, Rush Limbaugh read it on the air yesterday. Rush introduced it with this explanation:

Scandal? What Scandal?

(Steven Hayward)

What has been called the Kennedy Glorification Industry, or perhaps Jack and Jackie Glitter, Inc., swung into full DefCon1 mode the last few days to put down the Mimi Alford memoir about how JFK not only took her virginity but pimped her out to his aide Dave Powers in the White House swimming pool.  JFK Inc. can't employ the Clinton tactic of viciously attacking the credibility and reputation of the accuser, since she was discovered by a liberal biographer, Robert Dallek, several years ago.  So instead the JFK library "coincidentally" released this week new private papers from Jackie Onassis, and last night the network nightly news programs dutifully ran weepy reminiscences about the 50th anniversary of Jackie's televised White House tour.  Alford?  Alford? Never heard of her in the network newsrooms apparently.

Meanwhile, Chris Matthews finally got his JFK groove back, and his weekend panel that unanimously agreed that there's nothing to see here, move along, move along:

CLARENCE PAGE, CHICAGO TRIBUNE: That was my reaction, too. No, this seems like a lot of deja vu once again as far as that aspect of Kennedy's character goes, but his image is still larger than all of that.

MATTHEWS: Yeah, I wrote a much more comprehensive book about Jack Kennedy.  [Really?  I hadn't heard this. . .]  I got to tell you, it's all a part of the picture. You can't defend it. He's still a hero.
